2-1 Manglacharan/ Bahadhur Shah Attacks Chittor
Ik Oankaar Satgur Prasaad..
Sri Vahiguru ji ki Fateh..
You are the wise Queen of the Universe. You are worshipped by the Devatas. You give joy to your servants. Oh Sharda, you sat on the Kavi’s tongue to complete this Granth.
Sri Nanak, Angad Guru, Amar Das pad band – I bow to the feet of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, Sri Guru Angad Dev ji and Sri Guru Amar Das ji. Ram Das, Arjan Guru, bar Sri Har Gobind – Sri Guru Ram Das ji, Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji and Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji, I bow to you. Hari Rai, Har Krishan Gur, Tegh Bahadhur Chand – Sri Guru Hari Rai ji, Sri Guru Har Krishan ji and Sri Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji; who are calm and serene like the moon. Dasve Gobind Singh Guru namo charan arvind – the tenth, Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji; I bow to his lotus feet.
The one who created the existence, by whose awareness the world can be see; is not seen himself. It is as the eye can see everything but the eye can’t see itself.
The Jogis sit in their Dhyaananand, the bliss of Dhyaan. The Bhogis (the indulgers) are in Bishyanand (the pleasures of the senses). The one Parmatma exists in all. I bow to the Parmatma, over and over again.
I will now state the remaining Katha as the Guru went back to the Vaikunth. How he arrived in Abchalnagar, listen oh listeners with your devotion-drenched minds.
The Chaumasa was spent with the rains. The rains passed as Sri Guru ji was living in Agra. Bahadhur Shah sent a message to Guru ji: “I wish to go to the Rajputana. I wish to go the Udaipur and the other states with battlefields. I wish to make them fearful of me so they come to meet me. Please bless me and come with me. Come and give your Darshan to the other lands.” Satguru ji heard this and said: “the days of Navratray Durga Pooja are upon us. We will be carrying out the tradition of Dushehra (cleaning the Shasters and doing their Pooja while reciting the Chandi Bani) in a good way. I will then leave without delay. You should leave in the meantime. Go and give fear to the Rajputs. I will meet you ahead in the future. Go and take your whole army.” The message was given to the Shah. The messenger told the Shah, Guru ji’s message. The Shah received permission from Guru ji and left Agra. He left with Ransinghas, Nagaras, Pattas, Shuthri Nagaras and other conches playing, all at once. Shah Bahadhur left with force. He travelled short distances a day. He thought to himself: “Satguru ji will eventually meet up with me.” He went to the Rajputana to assert his command on them. He did this “show of power” to make the Rajputs accept his reign over the country.
In Agra, Satguru ji did the Pooja of Navratray with a lot of sandalwood, dhoop and flowers. The various Durga Paaths were recited, a lot. The Havans were done with a lot of items. Incense and ghee Divas were lit. The Shasters (weapons) were taken out of the treasury and cleaned. Khandas, Kharags, two-edged swords, Saifs, Sirohis, Jamdaras, Tomars, spears, Saangs, arrows, chakars, Bichuas, Khanjars, Khappar arrows, Tupaks, pistols and huge bows; the whole armoury treasury was taken out. These Shasters were worshipped with love in the heart. Many types of foods were made. Pooris, Panchamrit and other foods were made and distributed. The slogans of “Jai, Jai,” were shouted out loud. With joy in the heart, everyone bowed to Gaurja (the daughter of the mountain – Parvati/ Durga/ Chandi). Then the day of Dushehra came. The horse was decorated and stood at the front. The Pooja of the horses and chariots was done in a good way. Guru ji then mounted his horse and went hunting. Everyone practised Shaster Vidya. Guru ji practising firing bullets and shooting arrows, piercing the targets. He made his horse run and fired bullets. He practiced with spears. He did the Darshan of Garud and came back. He performed these practises with great enthusiasm. He celebrated in many ways. Satguru ji came to the best garden.
Dushehra passed and it was now the 13th day after the new moon. Guru ji commanded everyone to get ready to leave. Everyone got ready with clothes and weapons. Prabhoo ji got ready to leave. The Sangat of Agra heard of Guru ji’s departure. They all came for Guru ji’s Darshan. They brought gifts and bowed with their hands folded. They bowed to Guru ji to take leave. They said: “we have been blessed by your Darshan. The sins of our many births have been destroyed. We had good Karma by which we met you. We made our human bodies successful.” They praised Guru ji. The gifts piled up. Guru ji gave his Darshan and mounted his horse. The whole Khalsa army set off.
The Khalsa and Guru ji set up Dhera at the next lake. They all ate at night and slept. The next morning, Guru ji got ready to leave. They travelled longer distances in 4 days. Guru ji met Bahadhur Shah in the Rajputana. The Shah had surrounded Amber in Jaipur. He had them declare their allegiance to the crown and set off towards Jodhpur to set up the Dhera. The Shah then met Ajeet Singh of Marwar with full strength. Ajeet Singh and the other Rajas brought gifts for the Shah. They left their egos and folded their hands. The Shah then took his huge army and then went to Merhta. After confirming their allegiance, the Shah then headed towards Chittor. The whole Desh knew of the Shah’s arrival. The Rajput Rajas all sent their messengers to Bahadhur Shah.
Some of the Singhs with Guru ji went to go see the Chittor to understand the area. They saw some good grass and gathered it. Some men of the area gathered and came to the Singhs. They did not let the Singhs take the grass. They Singhs insisted and so a fight broke out. The bullets fired. The both sides fought fiercely. The bullets fired in great numbers. A lot of noise was made. The Rajputs all gathered to fight the Singhs. Many weapons were used to attack the Singhs. Satguru ji heard the loud noise and sent the Khalsa to fight. Warriors from both sides met. The Singhs saw the battle and got angry. They all fired their rifles. The bullets hit the bodies and made the bodies bleed. The heads blasted and the hearts were pierced. Many fell. The warriors died and went to Svarga. The Singhs charged and took the grass forcefully. They Rajputs did not let the Singhs take the grass. They fought for 3 hours. The noise of rifles firing was quite loud. The Singhs planted their feet with anger. They fired their rifles all at once. Many enemies were hit with bullets. Many fell all at once, taking bullets. They piled up. The Rajputs saw the radiance of the Singhs and ran away out of fear. The Singhs picked up the grass and came back.
Satguru ji spoke to the Singhs: “why did you fight without being told to? You went to go see Chittor but you started a fight without my permission. Don’t do this in the future. We are in a foreign land. Don’t set up the battlefield in foreign lands. They would have gathered thousands of their soldiers, surrounded you and attacked. Who would have assisted you and saved you? They would have killed you in the first charge.” Guru ji gave them instructions in such a way. A person came to give news to Guru ji: “the way ahead is difficult and painful. There is no path there. You won’t be able to travel there. The mountains and jungles are painful areas. It is impossible to travel there.” Satguru ji then turned back from there. Guru ji travelled the easier way. They headed off and slowly reached the place where the shores of the Narbada are. Bahadhur Shah set up camp there as well.
2-2 The Shaheedi of Maan Singh/ Arriving in Burhanpur
Guru ji came to the Narbada River and set up the Dhera in a good place. Some Singhs were behind, who had rifles and bows. To get grass, they went back. As they gathered grass, some of the people stopped them. They were the men of Bahadhur Shah. They said: “we will take the grass. How are you the owners of this now?” Some of the Turks had their relatives killed by Singhs. Their relatives were killed in the great battles of Anandpur and Chamkaur. They heard about their deaths and were in mourning for them. They thought of their enmity and attacked with their weapons. The Singhs fired their rifles as well. A useless fight broke out. There was no reason for it. Sri Guru ji had set up the Dhera in a nice place. Guru ji then came there after hearing of it. Guru ji heard that the Singhs were fighting. He sent Bhai Maan Singh ji and said: “make both sides stop fighting. Tell them not to fight for no reason. You will die for no reason. It is a small thing you’re fighting over. Don’t fight, as many warriors will die.” Bhai Maan Singh ji made his horse run to where the fight was happening.
Bhai Maan Singh ji told both sides to stop. He said: “Guru ji and the Shah are on good terms. By whose command are you fighting? Warriors from both sides have died. Why are you getting angry over grass?” He made everyone understand and brought calm to the situation. He walked in the middle to calm the fight. One of the Turks, who was a fool, loaded his rifle and aimed at Bhai Maan Singh ji. He fired and killed Bhai Maan Singh ji. Bhai Maan Singh ji fell to the ground. The Singhs saw this and got angry. They loaded their rifles and began fighting again. They charged and killed the enemy. Many fell off their horses like minarets falling. They killed many. The battle was fierce. Many Turks died and some ran away. The Singhs took the grass and came back. They brought Bhai Maan Singh ji’s body back. Guru ji heard of Bhai Maan Singh ji’s Shaheedi and had deep sorrow in his heart. He said: “look what the fools have done! He went to stop the fight and those fools killed him. Bhai Maan Singh ji was a great warrior who was really wise. How will I ever find such a Singh again? How many virtues of his can I count? He was wise in every task. He fought in Anandpur and Chamkaur. He fought and came with me from Chamkaur. Where will I ever find such a brave warrior again? Such warriors are rare. They aren’t born often nor are they in every land.” When the Shah heard of this occurrence, he became upset and grabbed his forehead in regret. He commanded: “arrest them all and give the guilty ones to Guru ji. He can take his revenge as he wishes. The fools were thinking of previous enmity and so they shot the Guru’s Singh.” The Shah’s personal regiment came and arrested the guilty soldiers. They were put to stand in front of the Badshah. Bahadhur Shah took all the guilty men and came to where the Master of the Universe was sitting. He bowed and sat near Guru ji. He spoke of the whole situation: “these are your guilty criminals. Command me how I should kill them. I can drown them all in the river or I can blast them in front of canons. These fools did not know your greatness. They don’t know that you donated the Sultanate to me. The elephants, horses and wealth that I have today; were given to me by you, oh Gareeb Nivaaj.” Prabhoo ji heard this and said: “they loaded chaos onto their minds. I sent my Singh to stop the fight. He stopped both sides from fighting. He walked around without doubt. Without his knowing, some fool fired at him without warning. They shot him in the chest up close. Such a horrible act was done by a fool. They killed my priceless warrior. He had fought alone with many. He was very wise and courageous. These fools thought of some old enmity. They didn’t think of how they brought destruction upon themselves.” Guru ji said this and blessed them, saying: “let them go. If we kill them, I won’t get my Singh back. They will suffer for their own actions.” The men were really scared. They knew that they would be destroyed. They heard Guru ji’s words and figured out that they had been spared. They said: “you are Dhan Guru! You are great! You let the guilty ones go free.” Bahadhur Shah made many requests to Guru ji with humility. He made Satguru ji happy and bowed before getting up. He came back to his own Dhera. He slept the night in peace.
In the morning, everyone set off. Bahadhur Shah was at the front. The Rajas and Ranas all got together to meet with Bahadhur Shah. His radiance grew by the day. They saw his army like a great lion. They didn’t dare revolt against him out of fear. Where the River Tapti (born of Surya and Chaya) flows, the huge army travelled and came to the shores. They saw the pure water. There were many Chakvas and Chakvis singing there. The shore was loud. There were turtles and fish in the water. The Desh was beautiful and peaceful. Satguru Bhagwan ji came there. He came to the place of Burhanpur. The Sangat of Burhanpur and made a beautiful house for Guru ji to stay in. They had a wish in their hearts to have Guru ji come to their homes. They wanted Guru ji to stay in the beautiful home. The Sangat wanted to come and do his Darshan. They had started making this home a year ago. They had a wish for Guru ji to come and stay there. To fulfill the wish of the Sangat, Guru ji came the whole way. The leaders of the Sangat came ahead to welcome Guru ji. They took Guru ji to the home. They folded their hands and had Guru ji come into the home. The Sangat did his Darshan, bringing many gifts. They brought money, jewellery and really expensive clothes. They had Pakvaans and Karah Prashaad made. They did the Ardaas and distributed the food. They brought rice and flour for the Langer. They brought ghee, sugar and other sweet foods. They did many types of Sevas. They made Guru ji happy. Guru ji was happy over everyone. The Sikhs’ wishes were fulfilled. The Dhera was set on the shores of the Tapti. The Damdama was beautiful and high. Guru ji spent the night there.
In the morning, Guru ji bathed and got ready with clothes, weapons and jewellery with many gems. The Khalsa court was in session. Thousands of men and women came. They did Guru ji’s Darshan and were blessed. They listened to Guru ji’s words. They stayed there for a few days. The land was beautiful. There were wells and ponds there. Guru ji sat near the shore of the daughter of Sooraj (Tapti). Guru ji mounted his horse to see the land. The grass was nice and green. Bahadhur Shah went on ahead but Guru ji stayed. The Shah went to many lands to have their allegiances pledged to him. The Prabhoo stayed there for some days. Kavi Santokh Singh says the praises of the Guru.
2-3 Burhanpur /Blessing the Sadhoo
Bahadhur Shah went towards the Dakhan Desh to where Nauranga waged battles. It was the rich Desh. In Burhanpur, seeing the love of the Sikhs, as they had asked Guru ji to stay longer; Sri Prabhoo ji accepted their requests. He disregarded his plans and stayed in Burhanpur. The Sikhs served Guru ji, day and night, a lot. They did Guru ji’s Darshan two times a day.
There was a wise Sadhoo who was really old that lived in Burhanpur. He had Vivek. When he heard of Guru ji’s arrival, it was like receiving the Amrit. He got up right away and went for Guru ji’s Darshan. Guru ji was at the shores of the Tapti. Guru ji was sitting in his court all dressed up. It was like Kuber dressed up. The Sadhoo saw Guru ji from afar and became filled with a lot of love. It was like a drug for an addict; he was intoxicated with joy. He had bliss overflowing in his heart, seeing Guru ji. The Sadhoo got goosebumps. He stepped forward, slowly. He was old so he wobbled as he walked. His eyes were shedding tears. He bowed from afar. He couldn’t come close as he fell to the ground, like a stick falling on the floor. It was as though he grabbed Guru ji’s feet from afar. Guru ji saw the Sadhoo’s deep love. Guru ji got up from his throne and went to pick the Sadhoo up from the ground. He hugged him, seeing him as his deep friend. He then brought the Sadhoo to his court. He brought him in with respect. He spoke to him sweetly: “are you well? Your heart his drenched in Prema Bhagti. Desire, anger and other vices; have they been destroyed or do they still give you pain?” After gathering his courage after a while, he looked towards Guru ji’s handsome face with love. He folded his hands and said: “listen Master, you know everything oh Omniscient One. Whomever you bless, their roots of the vices and ego are destroyed. Till the ego of the body (the false awareness that the body is the real self as apposed to the Aatma) remains planted firmly; the desire and anger are not destroyed. Many have rotted in this perplexity. Your Bhagats although, remain in peace. They see the will of the Ishwar as sweet. They are focused in the Satnam, in a great way. They discard the ego of their body and then the Parmeshwar becomes compassionate towards them. The Jeev becomes deserving of Mukti. They drink the Amrit of the love of Prabhoo. Their vices are all destroyed. They chant the Prabhoo’s Name with every breath, and feel the omnipresence of the Prabhoo. When you were born in Patna, I was near the shores of the Brahmaputra. Sri Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji was with me. I did his Darshan, who was the home of peace and joy. The Raja had faith in Guru ji and Guru ji gave him victory. We heard of your birth and the Raja had the Shutri Dhundhabs played. Many canons and rifles were fired all at once as a celebration. The Turrarees, Ransinghas, Daphs, Dhols, Pattas and conches all played at once. Sri Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji had a great celebration at that time. Many beggars came. Nobody left empty-handed. They were given a lot of money. The Raja and all of the soldiers were really happy. The Raja gave a lot of donations by singing Guru ji’s praises. I asked your father then: “what great qualities does the Sahibzada have? By whose birth these great celebrations were done, I wish to see his face.” Guru ji heard this and said: “the Avatar has come by the command of Ishwar. The Ishwar, who has many Vishnus and Maheshas in every hair, the great and powerful Karta Purakh; I did many types of Jodh Sadhanas and focused my Dhyana in the Prabhoo to worship him. The Karta Purakh was happy with me and sent this Complete Purakh. I was given this one son after a very long time. In my later age, I received this son. I am more than 40 years old now (he was around 46 when Guru Gobind Singh ji was born). This Avatar is a very powerful and strong being. He will do very big tasks. He will keep the honour of the Hindus. He will destroy the kingdom of the Turks. He will illuminate the third Panth. He will save the saints and destroy the sinners. He will wage battles in the Madhur Desh. He will kill Lakhs. Many conflicts will arise. He will kill the Turk Emperor and then go towards the Dakhan for the last time. Oh Sadhoo, listen, you will have a very long life. Settle in the Dakhan somewhere. You will see him then.” I heard this from your father and then I lived in this village with the desire of seeing you. I kept on doing your Simran, waiting for you. You came now with compassion. I have completed all my tasks and now you have come in my end time. You came here to complete my wish. I have seen many dramas of the world. I did your Darshan and now I am blessed. My Tapp and Japp has been a success. Complete one more wish of my: I wish to prepare food for you. Eat in the morning with all your Singhs.” Guru ji saw the faith in the Sadhoo. He heard his words and was very happy. He said: “you did the Sadhna to earn Parlok. You made your life a success. You will not come back to this world. You denounced your vices and made your heart bright. The Satnam has coloured your heard. It is deep. It can never fade nor come off. This colour will never grow old. It gets deeper as time goes on. The ones who have possessed control over the Prabhoo with love, why wouldn’t I accept your request? I obey your command, everyday. Why wouldn’t I come to your home?” After speaking, the Sant went to his home with joy.
The saint prepared food. He asked for many types of food. The expert cooks were asked to make the food. The 6 types of tasty foods were made. Yoghurt, milk and a lot of sweets were made. Sour tasting foods were made. Dishes with a lot of masalas and spices were made. The smell and taste were great. When it was around 9 am, the Sadhoo came to Guru ji to invite him. He bowed to Guru ji and had him mount his horse. The Khalsa came with Guru ji. Other Sikh Sangat came as well. The Sadhoo was happy with this. A great crowd came with Guru ji. The people of the village, as well as the Sikhs came. The Satsangat had a huge gathering. Everyone went to the Sadhoo’s home. Many Pangats were set and everyone sat. A beautiful stool was set for Guru ji. A white sheet was laid over the stool. Guru ji was seated with respect. A huge plate was set on another stool for Guru ji. Karah Prashaad and other foods were put on the plate. The plate was brought for Guru ji. Cool and fragrant water was placed before Guru ji. The people sat in lines and were served food as well. They began to eat, putting the morsels of food in their mouths. Sri Guru ji ate. It was delicious. He was soon satiated. He praised the different types of food. Everyone praised the foods. Everyone was satiated with the delicious food. The people of the village said: “we have had this food before, many times; but it had never tasted this great. The Sadhoo is great for hosting this great gathering. He has combined many delicious foods together in a great way.” Prabhoo ji washed up and gargled. The Sadhoo came to Guru ji with humility and grabbed his feet. When Guru ji blessed the Sadhoo, he gave him the Brahmgyaan. The Sadhoo saw the One Aatma in the whole universe. Prabhoo ji got up and came back to his Dhera. Guru ji laid down on his bed and went to sleep.
2-4 Arriving in Nanded/ Mentioning the Signs of his own place
The night passed. In the morning, two Kaasads (messengers) came to Guru ji. They had a letter written by Bahadhur Shah for Guru ji. It was a Shok Nama saying: “please give me your Darshan. You are my great Peer. I love this. By your blessing, my radiance has grown. There is no other like you in this world. To make a pauper into a king, you don’t take any time. You have the holy joy which you gave to me. It has been many days since you stayed back. You must have seen the love of your Sangat. I wish for your Darshan. Please don’t delay. See the love that I have for you.” Guru ji heard the letter being read out to him. He then gave out the orders to get ready and leave. The horses were saddled. He took leave from the Sikh Sangat. He gave them joy, seeing them as his own. He mounted his horse and set off on his journey. The wise Khalsa went with him.
They travelled a long way and came to where the Shah’s army was camped. The Shah came on his big horse. He came to welcome Guru ji with respect. Satguru ji came all of a sudden. The Shah did Guru ji’s Darshan and bowed his head. He spoke about his love. He did the Darshan of the Guru that was like the sun. The Shah’s eyes were like the lotus, blooming seeing the sun. He said: “it is good that you came! You saw me as your Mureed and gave me your Darshan. Sri Guru ji, you spent a long time there. I was thinking about you. Find a nice please and set up your Dhera. You blessed your follower.” Guru ji heard this and said: “there was a lot of Sangat in Burhanpur. They kept me in their home with love. I asked about leaving, many times but they didn’t let me leave. There was a Sadhoo there who was beloved to me. He kept me with his love as well.” After saying this, Guru ji blessed the Shah with joy. Guru ji set up the Dhera, seeing a nice place. Everyone made food and ate. They slept the night in joy.
In the morning, everyone got ready and set off on their travels. They had entered the Dakhan Desh. The men and women of that place were darker-skinned. They were a dark brown colour. The women wore a saree on their bodies. The men wore Dhotis. Their clothes, jewellery and language were very different. The people of Poona and Nagpur came to meet Guru ji with gifts. In this way, the Rajas of the area saw the huge army of the Shah and came to meet him. They were afraid of him. They met the Shah and introduced themselves. They gifted elephants, horses, money and other gifts to the Shah. The Shah and Guru ji passed many mountains and jungles. They passed cities and villages. How many people do I talk about? The place was beautiful and exotic. Many wells, ponds and gardens were on the way. There were a lot of coconut, betelnut and banana trees.
After travelling some more, they all came close to Basmat Nagar and set up the Dhera. They stayed there for 8 days. There is where the Gurduara named Damdama Sahib is. It is about 30 km away from Sri Hazoor Sahib. The pond where Guru ji stayed is still there. The Guru’s Sangat of the area came to see Guru ji with many types of gifts. They bowed their heads to Guru ji’s lotus feet. People for near and far heard of Guru ji’s arrival. The Sikhs in the area came to see Guru ji. Bahadhur Shah set up his camp and took money from all of the Rajas of the area. They all pledged their allegiances. The Shah kept moving forward. Guru ji also left. They would rest at night and travel during the day. After moving like this for many days, they eventually reached the shores of the Godavari. The huge armies arrived there. They all set up camp on the shores. The ancient place of Nanded was well-settled there. Many rich people lived in the city. This was an ancient city, established since Satyuga. It was huge and wealthy. When Tanay Shah was killed with force by Aurangzeb, there was a Sooba established there by the Shah. The Sooba heard of Bahadhur Shah’s arrival and got ready to come. He brought all of the wealth of the dead Aurangzeb with him. He came right away. He gave Bahadhur Shah the wealth and met him. The other Rajas of many other places came.
The leaders of Hyderabad, Mungi, Paithan and other places all came to meet Bahadhur Shah. They brought many gifts. The army set up camp there. Leaders of many other Desh and lands came. They can’t be counted. Near and far, many came with gifts for the Shah to accept his reign. Bahadhur Shah was more radiant than his father was due to Guru ji’s blessings. Nobody revolted against Bahadhur Shah. They gave him many gifts.
Satguru ji arrived to near Nanded, close to his own place. He said: “this is my old land. I will remove the old ownership.” There was a Mughal there that lived on the land where Guru ji came to. He claimed the land and said his ancestors owned the land. When he heard of Guru ji doing the Dhera, he came to fight and said: “this is my land! The whole city knows this. If you want to take it with force, my sons and grandsons will come and fight for it.” He caused a lot of conflict. The Mughal came to Bahadhur Shah. Sri Prabhoo ji said: “this is my land. There is no other owner of this land.” The Mughal said: “this is the land of my forefathers. This is not a secret. The whole city knows this.” Bahadhur Shah was confused regarding this matter. He thought to himself: “Sri Guru ji never lies. The whole city gives their reference that this land has been the Mughal’s for many generations.” Bahadhur Shah spoke to Guru ji: “all of the land is yours but if you say this land is yours, please show us a sign. I can definitely claim this for you then. Nobody will fight with you or appose you then. If you want to forcefully take the land then I can scold him and take the land. I can stop him and tell him to leave. Till I am alive, nobody will appose you for this land. After us, there will definitely be a conflict for this land. For this reason, the claim would be futile. The whole city gives their reference that the land belongs to the Mughal. Just like they can prove it, tell us some signs that this place is yours. You can then claim this land for yourself with a solid foundation. Nobody will come close then. Everyone will see the proof and stay quiet.” The Shah spoke facts. Satguru ji accepted this and said: “the Mughal should bring the leaders of the city. Bring the Qazis and the Administrators with him. You should have your Umraavs sit in the meeting as well. I will finish the conflict of this land. You can give this land to who it really belongs to. The liar will have to leave.” Guru ji’s factual words were heard by the Shah. Everyone was gathered. The Mughal brought the leaders and rich men. The Pardhaans came and so did the officers of the Shah. Thousands gathered and came. The Shah sent commands and called everyone. They all came and sat near Guru ji. The Mughal first spoke: “this land has been ours for many generations. The people of the city know of this. You can ask everyone. If you wish to forcefully take it from me, then there is nothing I can do. The Shah owns the whole country.” Sri Guru ji spoke in front of everyone: “this land was mine, Lakhs of years ago. I have taken care of this place for thousands of years. When I left this place, other people took over and became the owners. There is an ancient Ashram here that was really big. If you don’t have faith over my words then I can show you my signs.” Where the Dhera was, Guru ji had the place dug. The place was dug very deep. As they dug, they found ashes. Under the ashes was an Asan, a sitting place. Prabhoo ji said: “dig deeper. You will find a Karmandal and a Mala. In the body that I was known as Dusht Daman, I did a very strict and beautiful Tapp here. I lived here for thousands of years. I endured many types of pains on my body.” The people dug deeper and found Guru ji’s Mala. Guru ji’s Tapp was so radiant that his Asan made of deer skin, did not rot. They then found a Karmandal and a toomba. They were as they were thousands of years ago because of the great Tapp. Everyone was amazed to see this. They all said: “Dhan Dhan is the Guru.” Everyone had love and devotion for Guru ji. They all bowed their heads upon Guru ji’s lotus feet.
2-5 Buying the Land/ Meeting Banda
Sri Guru ji showed everyone his ancient belongings as Dusht Daman. He said to everyone: “the Tapasvi owned the land up to 1 Jozen around the area. Many of my Sikhs lived here. There was a huge Ashram here. Where you found the ashes, this is where I used to sit. I showed everyone the place. This land is mine now. I will still pay for this land and buy it. Take the price for it and let go of your claim upon the land.” Satguru ji laid out golden Dinars over the place, up to the area where the Darbar of Sach Khand Sri Hazoor Sahib stands today. Guru ji priced every inch of the land with a golden Dinar. The Mughal was really happy and took the Dinars. He got many times more than the land was actually worth. There was nothing more he could say. He didn’t speak again of the claim to the land. Guru ji had a statement written up that was a deed to the land. Everyone heard the statement. Everyone gave their witness for the transaction. It stated: “the generations of the Mughal can no longer stake claim to the land.” Everyone else left after the signing. The Umraavs went to the Shah and told him everything. Bahadhur Shah was happy to hear what had happened. The Shah saw the deed. The Shah wrote a signed statement: “1 Jozen around the area belongs to Guru Gobind Singh ji.” The whole city came to know that Guru ji bought the land. Guru ji then settled the Dhera in a good way.
One day, Guru ji wished to go hunting. He travelled far to hunt from the Takhat Sahib. He saw an Ashram of a Bairagi near the shores of the Godavari. The Sadhoo of the Ashram had gone out somewhere. The name of the Sadhoo was Madho Das. Guru ji saw strong and fat goats in the Ashram. Guru ji had them Jhatka and cooked. Guru ji sat under a thick shade along with the other Singhs. Guru ji went inside the Ashram after a while. It was a beautiful place. There was one huge bed laid out. White sheets were laid on top. The Master of the Universe went and sat on top of the huge bed. He sat on the bed for a while. One follower of the Sadhoo saw this and ran to the Sadhoo. He said: “how are you sitting here? Blasphemy has taken place in the Dhera. A very radiant being has come and killed the goats. They cooked and ate the goats. We couldn’t say anything in front of his radiance. He ate the meat and wasn’t afraid of us. He then went inside the Ashram. We said your name to stop him but he didn’t stop. He went to your bed and sat on top of it. He had no doubts in his mind and sat on your bed without fear.” Madho Das heard this and became angry. He said: “who is there in the world who is such an egotistical person? He didn’t stop, seeing me as a Sadhoo. Secondly, I am filled with powers. Thirdly, there is no Sadhoo that is Ghristi and carries weapons.” He sent one of his powerful Birs and said: “punish him by flipping the bed. By which his Pranas do not remain, do that and kill him. The others should see this and be afraid of me. Nobody will disrespect a Sadhoo again. Whoever does such a thing, they should feel pain.” The Bir went right away like an arrow leaving a bow. The Bir came to pick up the bed. It used all its powers but couldn’t pick it up. The Sadhoo sent another Bir to flip over the bed. Both Birs failed. The patient Guru made the legs of the bed plant firmly into the ground. The Birs did not have enough strength to flip the bed. The Sadhoo figured out that the Birs failed. He figured out that the being was a very powerful one. He sent a third and then a fourth. All 4 Birs used their strength but failed. They couldn’t flip the bed. Guru ji held down all four sides of the bed. He put his weight on the whole bed. When the Birs figured out that the bed couldn’t be lifted, they tried to push the bed down. They got angry and showed their strength. The bed moved a little and the legs of the bed went down a little. Guru ji saw this and spoke: “oh wood, what fight do you have with me? You are going into the ground. Why don’t you stay up?” Guru ji put his hand on the bed and the powers of the Sadhoo became useless. They all saw Guru ji as more powerful. Madho Das lost his ego. He became humble and came to Guru ji.
Madho Das saw Sri Guru ji sitting on his bed. He had his Darshan. Madho Das folded his hands and bowed. He stared at Guru ji’s face. Prabhoo ji said: “who are you? How are you living in this place?” Madho Das said: “this Ashram belonged to my Guru. He did a Tapp here for a long time. I live here after him. I live here alone and only love to do Tapp.” Guru ji heard this and said: “where is your Guru? Do you know where he went after he died? You trusted him and live in this Ashram, do you know where he went or not?” Madho Das became humble and said: “I don’t have those powers to see where he is now. If you have those powers, to see the Lok and Parlok in a good way, then please show me my Guru so my doubt can be still.” Guru ji said: “this tree you see in front of you, there is a fruit handing from the tree with an insect in it. That insect is your Guru. If you still want to know of him, go and get that fruit and give it to me. Call your Guru by his name.” The Sadhoo went to the tree and saw the ripe and red fruit. He plucked the fruit and brought it to Guru ji. He saw the insect come out. He called his Guru’s name out loud. The Insect buzzed out loud in acknowledgement. Madho Das figured out that the insect was his Guru. He was surprised to see his Guru in that state. Guru ji said: “why are you worried? Understand this: he had some Karma left and became an insect. After he leaves the body of the insect, he will achieve the highest status of Mukti. He won’t be in such a bad state again.” As Guru ji held the fruit, the insect died. The insect fell onto the ground from the fruit. Madho Das said: “Prabhoo, please be compassionate with me. Don’t see my faults. Please tell me what Seva I can do for you. Keep me to your lotus feet. Keep me in your sanctuary.” Guru ji saw Madho Das as humble and spoke to him with joy: “I have been commanded by the Kartar to illuminate a strong Panth in this world. This Panth is to destroy the radiance of the Turks which his shinning in every direction. You tell me how we should do this. Will you join me in killing this enemy?” Madho Das heard this and said: “you are my Master. I am your Banda (man). I won’t be lazy in obeying you. I will be under your command. I will wage war and destroy the enemy to ashes. With your help, I will take a sharp Khanda and fight a fierce battle to destroy the enemy to pieces.” Guru ji laughed and said: “I command you. I have taken gold out of the sand. Go to the Desh Panjab and take my revenge. The ones who are Bemukhs, destroy them. I give you my radiant Panth. I make you the leader within all. You called yourself my “Banda,” therefore the whole world will know you in this way. The enemy will not remain standing in front of you. You will wage fierce and strong battles. There will be conflicts. The ones who will be against you, they will die in the hundreds of thousands. Only the ones who run away will survive.” Baba Banda Singh Bahadhur ji’s mind was determined. He folded his hands and remained standing in front of Guru ji. He was ready to fight by the command of Guru ji. Sri Satguru ji blessed him with his divine sight.
