2-6 Giving Wisdom to Mata ji and Pitha ji/ Leaving for Sach Khand
The Mother of the World, who mounts the lion; has 8 arms; destroys the fools; I bow to her feet and speak the beautiful Katha of Guru ji.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Listen to the Katha, oh Pheroo Nandan (son of Baba Pheroo – Guru Angad Dev ji). This Katha destroys the sins who listen to it. The Deen Dayal was in Talwandi. He stayed there for many days. One day, Pitha Kalu ji came home and spoke to Guru ji to convince him: “oh son, follow the traditions of the Ghristi. Let go of the garb of the Fakirs. The money that we had, you had lost it by giving it away. Take on some work now. Earn money with wisdom. We are hit by old age. It is your turn to give us joy. Take care of all the work of the home now. Live in your city and be happy. Stay here so we can see you all the time. Your mother will be happy seeing you. Call your wife and sons here. Live here with love and raise your family. We are all separated right now, living in different places. Without you, the whole family is suffering in pain.” Guru ji heard his father and spoke words of Gyaan: “listen Pitha ji, the wisdom is like a canoe. The attachment of wealth is the river. The boat that sails on this river, it is quickly sunk. If the Satguru comes and drives the canoe, he can guide the wisdom and save it from the attachment of wealth. It stays on top. The Satguru tells the wisdom Gyaan. To see your Aatma is the other shore. Only reaching the shore can one be in peace. Otherwise, one continues to be born and die. That is painful. One keeps coming back to this world.” After saying this, Guru ji looked at his father with Compassion. He blocked and destroyed the Maya around his father’s heart. He gave his father the Aatam Gyaan, right away. It was as though someone was made sober quickly after being drunk. Pitha ji saw the Gyaan. He then spoke with love and amazement: “I thought you were my son. You are the great Being Himself! You are the Deen Dayala. You gave me Gyaan in my heart. Give me the Brahmgyaan by which my birth and death is destroyed. I wish for the infinite bliss. I don’t know who I am. I live between joy and pain. My mind has never been still, ever. I am stuck between attachment and jealousy.” When Guru ji saw his father’s state and wish for Mukti, Guru ji spoke: “the one who is Bemukh from Parmeshwar, that is the Munn. The form that is in front of Parmeshwar, that is the opposite of Munn. The Munn is destroyed then. Just as water becomes ice being away from the sun; and becomes water when in the light of the sun; that is how the Munn (mind) is. Make the Munn go towards the Parmeshwar. Joy, sorrow, attachment and jealousy; make your mind separated from these. In all places and all life forms, there is no other than the Parmeshwar. Just like there is water under the earth, that is how the Parmatma exists everywhere. If you say that you can’t see him, I will show you. The Gyaani whose heart is pure, that is where the Parmeshwar is, like a fountain. The one who wishes for Gyaan, they are like the well. As they make the efforts to take water come out of the well, in the same way one meets the Parmeshwar with effort. The Agyaani’s heart is covered just as the earth covers the water in the ground. They don’t get the water. The water is everywhere. Parmeshwar is everywhere. I have given the instructions to meet the Parmeshwar. The world that is formed, who else do you think lives here? The seed takes on a great form, the big tree spreads. If you try to look for the seed, you can’t find it in the wood or the flowers. You won’t see the seed there. You can look your whole life but you won’t see it. The wise person will look inside the fruits and be happy. Their chest will be cool finding the seed. This is how to find the Parmeshwar. There are 3 types: the Tamsik people – they are like wood and speak harsh words. They only look in the solid wood. They don’t find the Ishwar. You can’t find oil in the sand. The Rajsi people – they are like the leaves. They give pleasures like shade. They can’t get to Hari. It is a like a blind person walking by a pearl and not knowing it’s there. The Shantki People are like flowers. Their sweet words are fragrant. They have an idea of the seed. They accomplish some tasks but can’t get to the Prabhoo seed. The Gyaanis are like the fruits. They meet the Prabhoo like the fruit holds the seeds. There is no where else to find the seed. It lives in the Satsangat. That’s where the Parmeshwar lives. Oh Pitha ji, only the One Parmatma is everywhere. Think about love and hatred. Stop your mind from your imagination. See the One in all places. The Maya is the enchanter in the universe. See it as the shadow of your body. Sri Kartaar ji is like the sun. When the human is in front of the sun, his/her shadow follows behind. The Maya is not respected by such saints who love the Hari. The ones who turn their backs towards Hari, the foolish people chase their shadows to grab it. The shadow is in front. The person tries hard to catch it but fails. For this reason, the one that is the root of everything, do his Simran and follow his will.” After hearing the Gyaan, Pitha ji gave up the bonds of the world in one instance. His heart became pure and he started to do Simran. Gyaan came into his heart and the attachment ran away. He was connected to Hari, day and night. The duality was all destroyed. He only saw the One Parmatma everywhere. His imagination and thoughts were destroyed like a jewellery only seeing the gold, not the jewellery’s make. He only prices the gold. For a long while, Guru ji spent his time in Talwandi.
The time of Sharaads came. Pitha Kalu ji called for all the items for the Sharaads. He organized the Bhojan for the Sharaads. He called the Brahmins to eat the food. A great crowd gathered in the home. A Pandit was called at that time who made delicious food. The other Brahmins sat for the food. Guru ji casually came inside the home. The sun of the Bedis sat next to his father and said: “what task are you busy with? Our house is full today.” Pitha Kalu ji said: “we are doing the Sharaads of the Pittars (ancestors). We do it on this day every year. This is the Vedic tradition that we have continued. The Shrutis sing about this.” Guru ji said: “oh Pitha ji, if you listen to me, your ancestors have already been given Mukti. You think the Sharaads feed them but they have gone where there is no hunger nor thirst. They do not wait for the Sharaads anymore. They are in the infinite bliss. The ancestors of people who need Sharaads, they get hungry and thirsty. The ones who have no desires, why would their descendants do their Sharaads? They have received Mukti. You should give the food to the Brahmins but you don’t need to do the Sharaads though.” Pitha ji said: “without seeing this with my own eyes, how can I believe this? Show me the reality of what you say. Show me where my ancestors are. When I see them, I will have faith. I will do as you say then.” Guru ji heard this and said: “if you want to see where they are, then close your eyes. See all your ancestors where they are sitting.” Pitha ji believed his son and closed his eyes. He saw an amazing sight. He saw the Vaikunt where all the Bhagats lived. He saw homes made of gold and diamonds. He saw all of his ancestors. When the ancestors saw Baba Kalu ji, they all got up to meet him. They respected Pitha Kalu ji. They spoke sweetly to him: “your effort is great! You are Dhan! Parmeshwar was born as your son because you did this Tapp for 100 lifetimes. Your son gave Mukti to all of the ancestors. We came to Prabhoo’s court.” Pitha ji said: “since when have you come here? When did you receive the Anand? When did you come to Sri Hari ji’s Lok? There is no jealousy, ego, attachment or sorrow here.” The ancestors said: “listen Kalu, when the Sri Ikankaar took an Avatar in your home, we came here since then. We received the infinite status. It is the highest status. The bliss will last forever. Don’t see your son as your son. See him as Hari and do his Bhagti with love.” Seeing his ancestors in bliss, Pitha ji was amazed. He didn’t want to leave the place. He wanted to stay in Sach Khand. He saw a great bliss in Sach Khand. Guru ji grabbed his father’s hand and shook him. Pitha ji opened his eyes and came back to his senses. Sri Guru ji said to his father: “did you see your ancestors or not? Tell me what you saw.” Pitha ji’s doubts were all gone. He saw Guru ji as the Prabhoo and was drenched in love. He said: “I saw everything. I saw that they lived where there was only bliss. Please be compassionate and send me there too. Take me there. I want to leave this body of feces and urine. I want to go where there is always bliss.” Guru ji said: “Pitha ji, your age is done. You will leave in a few days. Give everyone food now. After that, sit down and sing the glories of Hari.” Pitha ji agreed and got up.
Pitha ji served the food to all the Brahmins that had come. Everyone got food who came. After a few days, Pitha ji’s end-time came. Just as an elephant easily breaks a flower garland around its neck, that is how Pitha ji easily left his body and went to Vaikunt. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji did the cremation of his father’s body according to tradition. Mata Tripta ji left her body a few days later as well. Guru ji did the cremation of her body as well. She went to Sach Khand because of her love for her son. All of the wealth and items in the home, Sri Guru ji gave it all away to the poor. The elders of the Bedi clans tried to convince Guru ji in many ways to stay in the village of his father: “why are you a Virakat? Stay here.” Guru ji said: “the world is false. It will not last forever. Let go of the love for this world. Do the Simran of Satnam with love and eagerness.” Guru ji spent his days outside the home. He came home at night. He spent many days in Talwandi. His glory spread everywhere. Many people came to visit him with love. They would listen to his wise words with eagerness. Their eagerness grew 4 times. Guru ji gave them the wisdom of Mukti. He was benevolent. He said: “have faith in the Satsangat and do the Simran of Satnam. See the One Parmatma everywhere. The mind makes many thoughts. The one who wins the mind, that person receives the highest status, the Param Padh. For little pleasure, a person wastes the human life just like a merchant goes to the foreign land with little money as the principal investment; the Jeev bring the human body to the world and experiences pleasures. The fools are stuck in vices day and night. They do not buy the name. They waster their life. In the end they leave empty-ended. They go to Hell and feel pain. After suffering Hell, they are born in lower life forms. They leave the world in this way. Some go to Sach Khand who donate with charity in the human life. They keep doing donations and earn with Tapp. They experience the pleasures of Heaven and then they are born as humans again. They aren’t in a profit but they keep their principle human life. The ones with pure Aatmas and pure minds; the ones who profit, listen about them: they do the Simran with their body, action and minds. They take the profit and go to Sach Khand. They receive the infinite bliss that never goes away. For this reason, see the human body as the principal by which one can make a profit. Do the Simran of the Naam and discard your wishes.” The people that heard this, they said: “you are Dhan! You are the complete Mahapurakh Parmeshwar.” The ones who followed his instructions, they received Mukti with the Param Padh. Guru ji then wished to leave Talwandi.
Guru ji called me and Bhai Mardana ji. He said: “let’s go and see the Teeraths where many humans visit.” Chacha Lalu ji folded his hands and said: “son you are going. What will happen to me?” Guru ji said: “this world is false. Do the Simran of Satnam. You will never be in pain.” Satguru ji’s words are like the Jaiphul which destroys the attachment. The Jaiphul destroys pneumonia. Chacha ji was really happy and said: “son, whatever is your wish, you should do that.”
Listen Sri Guru Angad Dev ji to the Katha. Guru Nanak Dev ji took me and Bhai Mardana ji. We met everyone in Talwandi and took leave. He set off to defeat the hypocrites and destroy the ignorance. To go for the great victory and to win the 10 directions, the flag of the Bedis set off. He took the army of Dharma and went to destroy hypocrisy and ignorance. He took Prema Bhagti as the flag; the Love was the ploom Farla. The glory of the Akaal Purakh was the Nagara which sounded like thunder. He took the sword of Gyaan. The technique was the bow. He had a repertoire of examples which were his arrows. Where the strong ones were, Guru ji took his powers as the canon. It was used to destroy the strong forts of ego. The fields were floored. They enemies then joined him. The Simran of the Satnam was the chainmail. Many swords of doubt could not pierce it. Humility was his shield. Jealousy arrows could not pierce this shield. He had compassion as the chariot and charity were the horses. The charioteer was the truth. Patience, Santokh and charity along with Bigyaan and others were the great warriors to defeat the attachment. He took Vivek as the Raja. Faith, love, wisdom, to see all as One, to be steadfast in the Dharma and the good Ishnaan; Guru ji set off with these warriors to defeat the ignorance.
2-7 Discussion with Nannu Pandit in Kurukshetra
The saints who discard duality and see the one Aatma everywhere, they become calm. I bow to such saints.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Guru ji started a new Udaasi, as he wished to see the Teeraths. He wanted to bless the people. He first brought us to Kurukshetra. He found a nice place to sit. It was the time of the Solar Eclipses. There was a Mela to mark this event. Many had gathered for this. Brahmins and the other castes had come. They came to bathe during this time in the river. People from all 4 Ashrams had come. The people of the 6 Darshans all came to mark this event. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji saw everyone and thought to himself: “how can I talk to these Pandits who are proud of their education? These Sanyasis are egotistical.” Guru ji stayed in one place. Guru ji sat to destroy the hypocrisy. Bhai Mardana ji started singing a sweet Raag.
At that time, a queen came with her son and bowed to Guru ji. Their enemies had overpowered them and took their kingdom. The queen and her family were exiled. She and her son were humble and bowed to Guru ji, seeing him as a complete saint. They had hunted a deer on the way which they offered to Guru ji. The queen and her son said: “we have been exiled from our kingdom. We come to your shelter. Please bless us by which we may re-acquire our lost kingdom.” Guru ji heard this and said: “do a Brahm Bhoj (a big feist). You will gain your kingdom again.” The queen and prince folded their hands and said: “we don’t have any money for food. All our money was spent on the battle. We are as poor as paupers now. We come to your shelter, oh great saint.” Sri Guru ji said: “do this then: get a big pot with love and cook this deer you have brought. Clean it up and cook the meat. Cook it in the pot. Cook it with spices. Light the fire to cook it.” They heard these instructions and did as they were told. They made a fire pit to place the pot on. They started a fired. The meat was cut and placed in the pot for cooking. The spices were sauteed.
When the nearby Brahmins, attending the Mela, saw this, they came close. The proudest and most educated Brahmins saw the smoke rising from the fire. They got angry and said: “today is the solar eclipses. These fools are cooking meat today.” They brought Kutkas and other weapon with them. They came close and wanted to beat the queen and her son. They said to them: “what is your caste and Dharma? You are preforming a sinful act. The Turks are even afraid to eat meat on this day. Today is the day to bathe and donate. Today is the great day for those acts.” Sri Guru ji heard these words and said: “I am really hungry. They are cooking food to eat.” The Brahmins spoke harsh words: “do you know what is being cooked? Show us what is being cooked otherwise we will kill you all, right here.” The ones that saw the meat go in said: “there is meat being cooked in the pot. We saw them cut it and pour it into the pot. They lit the fire after. Kill them without delay! Nobody will do such an act again. They spoiled the traditions of Dharma. It is not a sin to kill such people.” Guru ji said: “if you want to show your strength, you wish to kill us, you can do as you wish. Nobody can stop you. If you wish to have a discussion with me of what the Dharma and Adharma is, then all of you Pandits and Sanyasis can come to me and have a discussion.” The wisest Brahmins heard words of patience. They gathered and came to Guru ji. The Sanyasis were very educated with Vidhya. Other people came as well.
Among them was a Pandit named “Nanak Chand” (later, Nannu). He had defeated many people in scholarly debates. He had read the Bhavikhya Puraan, which states the praises of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. He wanted others to think that he was actually Guru Nanak Dev ji. He started to call himself “Nanak Chand.” He called himself the Avatar of Kaliyuga who was to save many and spread the Simran of the Naam; while destroying hypocrisy. He knew all this and named himself as so. He would speak from the Bhavikhya Puraan and try to prove that he was the one. He came with the crowd. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji said: “oh Sanyasis, according to your ideology, what is meat? The Dharma of the Brahmins is to Read the Vedas and do the Yagnas. The Kshatriyas are the ones who fight the war of Dharma. They are to do the Yagna with meat. We are following our Dharma here. Why are you getting angry seeing this?” The Pandits all heard this and said: “the Kshatriyas always have weapons. You are dressed like a Fakir. How are you a Kshatriya without weapons?” Guru ji said: “I have great weapons. Listen to their names: I have the sharp Kharag of the Naam; the love of Satsangat is my bow; Sam (controlling the Munn) and Dam (controlling the Indrees) are my arrows; I have killed the deer of Munn; the Brahm Agni is the fire that cooks the deer; I am always eager to kill the vices.” The Pandits said: “you killed a real deer. Now you are cooking it. You are telling us something us.” Guru ji said: “listen, the 4 Vedas say hunting is the way of the Kshatriyas. This is evident in all 4 Yugas. If a person is egotistical in the word, they are sinned of killing. The ones who are not proud of their body, they are the Gyaanis who destroy the duality and vices from their minds; they see the Aatma everywhere, and know that it is the infinite truth; they see the world as a Asat, limited; finite; they see the world as non-existence in past, present and future (according to the Brahm Sutras, the world as we see it never existed in any time); they are not sinned with killing. The unwise Agyaanis who think they are the ones who are “doing” and “experiencing”; stuck in the caste Ashrams; they wish to eat delicious foods; only act like they don’t wish to eat such things; those people die and are born again. They are not released from this bondage.” After saying this, Guru ji said a Salok to show the Brahmins their vices:
Salok M:1..
First, the mortal is conceived by the flesh, and then he lives in the flesh.
When he comes alive, his received the mouth made of flesh; his bones, skin and body are made of flesh.
He comes out of the womb of flesh, and puts the nipple of the breast in his mouth which is made of flesh to feed.
His mouth is flesh, his tongue is flesh; his breaths are in the flesh.
When he grows up and is married, he brings his wife which is made of flesh, into his home.
Flesh is produced from flesh; all of the relatives are made of flesh.
When the Satguru is met, the one realizes the Hukam of the Lord’s Command, then he becomes wise.
By saying you have been released, the mortal does not find release; O Nanak, through empty words, one is ruined. ||1||
(SGGS 1289)
After being born, since then, everything is about the flesh. There is nothing without flesh. If there is, then tell me. The ones who have Vairagya (detaching desires), they go to the Satguru. The Satguru gives them wisdom. They understand all of the secrets. The person then sees the body as separate. They see their consciousness as different. They see the Aatma as different from the body. They know then that the Aatma is the Truth (unlimited and everlasting). The body is destined to die. The connection of Sat (infinite and everlasting) and Asat (finite and diminishing) is nothing. Just as the sun and darkness are never close to each other, that is how Sat and Asat are never together. You can’t know yourself without the wisdom of the Satguru.” After saying this, Guru ji went quiet.
The Pandit and Sanyasis had gathered in great numbers. They couldn’t respond to Guru ji and just looked at each other. They couldn’t look at Guru ji. The Sanyasis spent some time. The Pandit Nanak Chand, who had won the world, the Sanyasis said to him: “you have won the world. This Fakir that sits here, why don’t you debate with him? You know the Vedas and the Shastras. You are the wisest.” Nannu Pandit heard this and prepared to speak after being motivated. He didn’t really know an answer so he fidgeted and spoke whatever popped into his mind: “oh Fakir, you did a bad thing. You cooked on a holy day today. You call yourself a follower of the Dharam. How can you say that? The Shastras find you guilty. Today is the Solar Eclipses and you are cooking meat. It is the time for charity and bathing. What is your ideology? Give us your answer or else you will be destroyed.” The omniscient Satguru, wise and intelligent in every way, responded right away, while the Sanyasis, Brahmins and everyone else listened:
M:1..
The fools argue about flesh and meat, but they know nothing about Gyaan (of the self) and Dhyaan, focus.
What is called meat, and what is called green vegetables? In which does the sin lay?
By killing a rhinoceros for the Home Yagna, this was the direction of the Devatas.
They renounce meat, and hold their noses while sitting near it, they eat flesh at night (indulging with other women)
They practice hypocrisy, and make a show before other people, but they do not understand anything about Gyaan or Dyaan.
O Nanak, what can be said to the blind people? They cannot answer, or even understand what is said.
They alone are blind, who act blindly. They have no eyes in their hearts.
They are produced from the blood of their mothers and fathers, but they do not eat fish or meat.
But when men and women meet at night, they come together in the flesh and sin.
In the flesh we are conceived, and in the flesh we are born; we are all vessels of flesh.
You know nothing of Gyaan or Dhyaan, even though you call yourself clever, O Paanday.
You believe that flesh on the outside is bad, but the flesh of those in your own home is good.
All beings and creatures are flesh; the Aatma has taken up its home in the flesh.
They eat the uneatable (Tabacco and slander); they reject and abandon what they could eat. They have a teacher who is blind.
In the flesh we are conceived, and in the flesh we are born; we are all vessels of flesh.
You know nothing of Gyaan or Dhyaan, even though you call yourself clever, O Paanday.
Meat is allowed in the Puranas, meat is allowed in the Kataybs and the Koran. Throughout the four Yugas, meat has been used.
It is featured in sacred feasts and marriage festivities; meat is used in them.
Women, men, kings and emperors originate from meat.
If you see them (by your account) going to hell, then do not accept charitable gifts from them.
(If according to you) The giver goes to hell, (how can) the receiver goes to heaven – look at this injustice.
You do not understand your own self, but you preach to other people. O Pandit, you are very wise indeed.
O Paanday, you do not know where meat originated.
Food, sugar cane and cotton are produced from water. The three worlds came from water.
For Water you say, “it is good in many ways.” But water takes many forms of vices.
Forsaking these delicacies, one becomes a true Sanyasis. Nanak reflects and speaks. ||2||
(SGGS 1289-1290)
The Agyaanis say “meat, meat,” and fight foolishly in ego. They don’t understand the words of wisdom and instead they feed their egos with hypocrisy. The Aatma’s form, forgetting that and seeing the body as infinite is the eating of meat. The Aatma is separate in all 3 times from the body. It is not affected while living in the body. It is always separate. The body is false. The body comes according to Karma. The food comes to a person according to their Karma. Seeing the Shastras, one should eat without doubt. That is good. One can eat according to destiny. The Devatas advise the Gyaanis to kill the rhinoceros and other animals for Yagnas. They considered the Aatma as not the doer. They see that the Aatma is not the one experiencing anything. To experience taste is the Dharma of the Pranas. To eat food is the Dharma of the Indrees. The Dharma of the Munn is to know good and bad. Understand all this. If one eats and experiences, seeing their Karma, they are not involved in sin and virtue. The foolish Agyaanis show off, being Vaishnoo. They see meat and hold their noses during the day. In the night, they indulge with other women. They don’t have the eyes of the heart. They are blindly earning sins in pleasures. They consider the flesh of the outside as bad and hide to indulge with the flesh at night. This gives pain. The Agyaanis who do this, they eat with sin and are in pain. If the Gyaani destroys the ego of the body (seeing the Aatma is separate, not the experiencer), they eat what comes to them by their destiny. They eat seeing their Karma. They are not confined by sin and virtue. The Puranas and Kataybs mention meat. The Devatas’ Pooja is done by meat. Other occasions like weddings; without meat they are never great. Kings and emperors eat meat. If you think they are going to Hell, why do you take donations and gifts from them? You eat food from that money. Wouldn’t you go to Hell first? The givers would go after. You don’t understand this but you try to teach others. You call yourself wise Pandits. Meat, vegetables, cotton, sugar cane and other things, they are all made from water. The ones who denounce the tastes of “water,” that Pandit would be a true Sanyasi. You are hypocrites who are misleading the world. You will be punished ahead.” When Sri Guru ji said this, everyone went quiet. They didn’t know what to say. The false cannot stand in front of the truth; like a coward seeing a warrior, running away. Nanak Chand, the Pandit, folded his hands and said: “oh Fakir, what is your name?” Guru ji said: “my name is Nanak. I am the servant of the Nirankaar, the Giver of Joy.” Pandit Nanak Chand heard this and thought about it. He said to his people: “in the Bhavikhya Puraan, such is written about the Sri Nanak Avatar in Kaliyuga: Parmeshwar will come himself to spread the Dharma. For this reason, I named myself according to that. I won debates around the world by the strength of my Vidya. The truth is that I am not Nanak. This who sits in front of you, is the true Guru Nanak Dev ji. He came to save the world. His words are solid. They can’t be weighed. Who can talk in front of him? Whoever hears his wisdom, they will be saved in this world. They will break the chains (of attachment and desire) and be saved.” After saying this, everyone bowed their heads. Their hearts was drenched for the love of Guru ji’s feet. They asked for forgiveness and said: “oh Prabhoo ji, we didn’t know your greatness. You are the great saint Avatar. The biggest scholars of the world, they don’t change the ways of the previous Yugas. None of the Puranas mention not eating meat of special days. We understand that now. Forgive us as we didn’t know.” The Ocean of Virtues heard this and said: “I have cooked Kheer in the pot. I called milk from many cows and had it cooked here. The Solar eclipses is done. You can now all eat.” Pangats were formed and the prince was instructed to serve the Brahmins. To give joy to the servants of Hari, to kill the enemies; Guru ji kept giving Kheer to the Brahmins and Rikhis. The Merchants that were there, also came to eat. They all noticed that the pot was small but the Kheer didn’t finish. All of the Brahmins and Sanyasis ate as much as they wanted to. The Kheer kept coming out. Everyone was amazed as the Kheer would not finish.
Nanak Chand Pandit then said to all: “I take one letter of Kakka off from my name. I will now be known as “Nannu.” Don’t call me Nanak Chand from now on. This who sits before you is the real Guru Nanak ji.” He praised Guru ji. Everyone heard this and liked what was said. Many took the Pahul of Guru ji’s feet. They followed Gurmat in a good way. Sri Guru ji said: “keep your Dharma according to your Varna. Do the Simran of Satnam with love. Share your food and eat it, in a good way. Practice and recite the Bani of the Satguru. Make the Gyaan illuminate in your heart.” In this way, everyone heard the wisdom and bowed. They all went back to their homes. They sang the praises of Guru ji as they went home: “this is the Avatar of Prabhoo that came.”
The queen and her son came to bow to Guru ji’s feet. The Master saw them and said: “go back to your land and fight, facing your enemy. The enemy won’t last in front of you. You will take your kingdom back. Do the Simran of the Satnam.” The queen and her son obeyed. They were happy. They left quickly. They gathered an army from all around. They came to their land and fought a battle with rifles. Metal clanked with metal. Their metal proved to be stronger. The enemy couldn’t tolerate the force of the prince as he carried the radiance of Guru Nanak Dev ji. Many from the enemy army were killed and thrown onto the ground. The enemy wondered if it was the army of Jumms that came. The Prince fought straight on, by the boon of the Guru. The enemy ran away and the Prince took his kingdom back. He became the king and ruled the land. The capital was near Patna. He knew the greatness of Guru ji. Guru Angad Dev ji, listen, Guru ji then left Kurukshetra. He went to another place to save the world.
2-8 Throwing Water Towards the West at the Ganga
The killer of Sinners, the one who takes care of the world; your arms are strong; you separate the heads from the bodies of the sinners, Victory be to you oh Chandi, the radiant one.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Listen to the history, Sri Guru Angad Dev ji. The Home of Joy, Guru Nanak Dev ji, walked slowly. We reached the Mela of Sri Ganga ji at Haridwar. It was the Kumbh Mela. There was a great crowd there. East, west and north; many people came from all around. They all came to bathe, regarding it as a special day. The people could not be counted. The Master set up his Dhera there. The Omniscient One saw the great crowd and noticed that their hearts were impure. Nobody made their hearts clean or tried to make it still from their desires. The night passed and the morning came. Everyone went to bathe at the Ganga in a good place. Many Lakhs were there. They did not have Prema Bhagti in their hearts. They offered water to the Sun. Their minds were not still, even for a second. Their minds were wandering. Guru ji came among these people and bathed in the Ganga. Guru ji faced west and filled his fist with water. He began to throw the water towards the west for a long time. He stood in the middle of the Ganga as he did this. People saw this and were surprised. They said to each other: “who is this? Is he a Hindu or a Turk? We can’t tell what his tradition is.” They all thought like this in their hearts. They came to Guru ji and said: “are you a Hindu or a Turk? Tell us the truth. Don’t hide it. If you are a Turk, then why did you come to the Ganga? You came to take a bath with the Hindus. If you are a Hindu then why did you face the west to give the water? What were you thinking? Who are you giving water to towards the west? Why are you doing this unorthodox thing?” The Compassionate One spoke: “why are you giving water towards the east? Who are you giving it to and who is receiving it? First tell me this.” The people spoke: “we are giving it to our Pittars (ancestors). They take the water and are satiated the whole day. We receive joy in this way.” Sri Guru ji said: “how far are our Pittars, who you give water to? You say they receive the water and are satiated.” The wise ones spoke: “they are many thousands of Jozens away. We don’t really know.” Sri Guru ji heard this and started to throw more water towards the west. He filled both of his fasts and threw it towards the west. The people were surprised and asked: “you didn’t tell us about what you are doing. Are you Hindu or Turk? What caste are you? To whom are you giving the water to, to satiate?” Guru ji, the Flag of the Bedis, heard this and said: “when I came to the Ganga to bathe, I had planted seeds in my field but I didn’t water them. There is no one at home. I am watering my fields from here. I don’t want my fields to dry out. I want to hydrate them so I am sending water to my fields. My fields are on hills. The rain water comes down and my fields dry out.” The people listening to Guru ji thought he was crazy and said: “you are wasting your time. The water can’t reach your fields from here. Your fields are far away. You are here. How would the water reach your fields? Your fields won’t become green. You are unwise.” Guru ji spoke: “you have forgotten the Sri Parmeshwar. Your minds wander without Prema Bhagti. You are in doubt. My field is nearby. You say the water does not reach there. Your Pittars are way further away. How will your water reach them and satiate them? You call me unwise. How do you justify that? I think you are unwise.” After saying this, the Master of the Universe went quiet. Guru ji sat near the shore of the Ganga. Many people were bathing there. They sat at the shores after and sat in meditation.
Many started to do their Sandhya. They sprinkled sandalwood essences. Some sat quietly, holding a Mala in their hands. Sri Guru ji knew what everyone was thinking in their hearts. He knew who was really doing Simran. Guru ji spoke for all to hear: “look at all these Hindus who are going to Hell. The Jumms will come and beat them.” The people who were sitting said: “we are chanting the name of Hari. Why would we go to Hell? You already did a backwards tradition and now you speak nonsense again, being fearless.” To put these people on the right track, the Flag of the Bedis spoke: “if you are focused on the Naam, why would you go to Hell? You are showing a façade holding the Mala because your minds are not still. You are showing off to people, day and night. You are sitting and showing a façade. (Guru ji pointed to one person) You over there! You are holding a Mala but your mind is in Multan. (Pointing to another) You over there! You are in Kabul. Tell me the truth. (Pointing to another one) Hey you, you are in Indraprastha. You are thinking of profit and loss, being here.” Guru ji told everyone where their minds were. Sri Guru ji revealed everyone’s thoughts to them. Everyone heard the words of Guru ji and were shocked. They figured out that it was Parmeshwar who had come to give Mukti. They folded their hands and became humble. They bowed to Guru ji’s Lotus feet. They said: “we made a mistake. Please forgive our mistakes. We didn’t know your glory. We now know that you are the Giver of Mukti.” Everyone let go of their Malas. The ones that were doing the Pooja of the Thakurs also stopped. They all came to Guru ji and bowed to him with their hands folded. They said: “please make us your Sikhs. Give us your Charan Pahul and destroy our sins. Show us forgotten people the righteous path. You are the Great Being, the Giver of Mukti. You are our Guru from now on.” In this way, everyone bowed to Guru ji.
Sri Guru ji said: “listen all, how can I make you my Sikhs? Your minds are impure. Make someone else your Guru. You thought I was crazy.” The people said: “we won’t leave you now. You are trying to leave us.” They people grabbed Guru ji’s feet. Guru ji then spoke sweet words to give them Santokh. They all sat down. The people prepared food. Everyone said to Guru ji: “please be compassionate and eat our food. Please make our life a success.” Guru ji said: “I won’t eat with you. I won’t go with you.” They all said: “for the sake of Sri Kartaar, please get up and eat food.” Guru ji then agreed to go.
Where the kitchen was made, Guru ji came there. The people’s faith grew. The Kshatriyas and Brahmins took their clothes off (tied a Dhoti and only leaving the Janyow on) and sat in the Chownka. They washed their feet and marked the area. They had Guru ji sit there as well. When Guru ji sat, he said: “you made the Chownka bad. Why are you marking it? The Chownka of the inside is spoiled.” The Brahmins heard this and said: “we have prepared the food with purity. The Chownka was made with cow dung to purify it. We didn’t let anyone come close. We washed the wood along with the food. We did it all in front of you. How did the kitchen become spoiled? What did you see? We did it with purity and proper hygiene.” Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji spoke: “till you didn’t come, the Chownka was pure. When you came, you spoiled it. You have the low castes with you. They came and spoiled the Chownka.” The Brahmins said: “Sri Guru ji, we didn’t see anyone from the low castes here. Where are they? This was made with purity. Eat the food please. If you don’t want to eat then please tell us. Which low caste people do you see? Without telling us, we won’t believe you. We don’t understand your wisdom.” Guru ji heard this and said a Salok:
Sri Mukhvaak
Salok M:1..
Bad wisdom is the Miraashi woman; cruelty is the butcher-woman; slander of others in one’s heart is the Choori (cleaning-woman), and anger is the Chandaal.
What good is the Kaari (ceremonial lines drawn around the kitchen), when these four are sitting with you?
(SGGS 91)
These 4 low caste ones have come into the Chownka by which it is now spoiled. These were all in your hearts. Make your mind the judge. Think about what I am saying.” The Brahmins said: “how can our Chownka become pure then? Tell us.” Guru ji, the Ocean of Compassion, saw their love and said:
Salok M:1
Make Truth and abstinence from desires your self-discipline, and make good deeds the lines you draw; make the Simran of the Name your bath.
O Nanak, those are high in the afterlife who do not walk in the ways of sin nor inspire others to sin. ||1||
(SGGS 91)
“If such a pure Chownka is established, it will never spoil. Take this wisdom and engrain in it your heart. The impurity of your heart will be washed away.” Hearing the words of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, the people checked their hearts and saw all of their faults. They wanted to improve themselves. They turned their minds from the vices and connected them to Guru ji’s feet with faith. They said to Guru ji: “please make us your Sikhs. We come to your shelter. Please protect our honour. As you wish, you can give us wisdom and save us. We don’t know of any other place by which we can be saved. You are the form of Parmeshwar. We will chant your Name from now on.” Guru ji saw the humility in the people and said: “whatever money you have with you, give it all away in the name of Parmeshwar. Then you can be my Sikhs and be in bliss.” Some of the people obeyed Guru ji at that time and donated all of their money. The Master blessed those people with the wisdom of Satnam. They were drenched in the colour of the Naam. Their minds were peaceful upon received the blessings. Those people were given Mukti during their end time. While they were alive, they were focused in the Naam. In this way, Guru ji made the people his Sikhs.
When night came, Sri Ganga ji took on a human form and came to do the Darshan of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. She held a golden plate in her hands. The plate was filled with diamonds and pearls. She offered the gift to Guru Nanak Dev ji and bowed to his feet. She then said: “in the time of Kaliyuga, the sins have grown. I can’t tolerate the sins anymore. The sinners come to bathe in my waters. I wash their sins and keep them. This gives me pain. Please do something that I am always in peace. You are benevolent and came to earth to save everyone. You took on a human body in the clan of the Bedis.” Guru ji heard the words of Ganga and spoke with compassion: “the ones who are beloved to the Parmeshwar, think of their feet, day and night. When you remember them, they will come and place their feet in your waters. As soon as they do that, the sins inside of you will be destroyed. As the month of Kathak comes, the sky becomes pure. You will be pure like that when the saints come to you. I’ll tell you the qualities of the saints. As the silver is mistaken for seashells by others, the saints see the world as a seashell, not as the attractive silver it is mistaken for. They are the same in sorrow and joy. Their hearts are soft and they are always generous. Desires and vices are destroyed from their hearts. They are in pain when they see others in pain. They are happy seeing others happy. They are coloured in the Simran of Hari. They are far from hatred, attachment and ego. When the feet of such saints touch your waters, the sins inside of you won’t take long to be washed away.” Sri Ganga ji heard this and touched the feet of Guru ji with her hands. As soon as she touched Guru ji’s feet, she became pure, like clothes being cleaned by soap. She spoke in joy: “please accept my gift. You are the Master of the humble.” Sri Guru ji said to her: “this wealth is of no use to me. Take this and give it to the poor.” Sri Ganga ji said: “please be compassionate and come to eat the Bhojan that I hold.” After saying that, she left.
Morning came. Sri Ganga ji held a great feast in her human form. Many types of foods were made. She had called all of the Devatas. They all came where the water was pure. Naarad ji came with Sri Brahma ji. Gauri and Shamboo Shiv came. Chander, Surya, Sanak and his 3 brothers came. Varun, Kuber, Sameer and Ganesh came. Inder and the other Devatas came. They all came at Ganga ji’s invitation. The Rikhis, Munis, Jattis and Sanyasis came. Tappis, Digambars and others came. The Devatas disguised as humans to come. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji came as well. Everyone met Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji and bowed to his Lotus feet. They knew the glory of Parmeshwar Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. The Seva of the Bhoj was done by the Devatas. The preparation of the food was done by the Devatas. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji took water in his hands and did the Seva of washing the people’s feet. He showed everyone humility. Guru ji washed the feet of the saints and Sadhoos that came to eat. In this way, everyone ate the food. Everyone was happy to see Sri Guru ji. Everyone bowed to the feet of Sri Guru ji and went home.
Sri Ganga ji then bowed and immersed back into her waters like an ice doll meting by the heat of the sun. The people that had attended, they said to each other: “who held this huge Bhoj?” Everyone was surprised as nobody knew who hosted the great feist. Guru ji stayed at the shores of Ganga for many days. He showed the people the way of Bhagti and had them practice it. He then travelled off from Haridwar. Saying his name made the pain run away.
2-9 Wisdom to the People of Brij, Ayudhya and Kanshi
The Illuminating Light, which is bright; the one that completes the wishes; the destroyer of pain; the giver of joy; Victory be to you (oh Goddess of Wisdom) Home of Compassion.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Oh son of Pheroo, Guru Angad Dev ji, listen to the Katha. I will say it how I saw it. The Home of Virtues, Guru Nanak Dev ji travelled on. His wish was to save the people by his mind and words. As we walked, Guru ji spoke to me: “I will show you the Brijshala of Krishan Kaan. Where he took an Avatar to kill Kans; where he played in the home of Yashoda; where the daughter of Soorya (Yamuna) flows proudly; at the shores of Yamuna, Kaan played in joy; he tended the cows on the mountain; where he killed the sinners and made the earth lighter; where he killed the Daynts; where he played with the other Gwala (cow herder) kids, I will take you there.” As Guru ji spoke, we started to see the land of Brij. Guru ji saw the Gowardhan Mountain and sat there. Bhai Mardana ji spoke: “what is this huge mountain near the Yamuna? There is no other mountain like it around here. I am in doubt seeing this mountain.” Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji said: “when Ram Chander ji made the bridge on the ocean, since then this mountain has been here.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “please tell me its history.” Prabhoo ji said: “listen, when the bridge of Rameshwar was complete, Raghbir ji said: “don’t bring anymore rocks from the mountains.” Hanuman ji sat here with the mountain on top of his head and didn’t move. He didn’t go back to Ram Chander ji. Obeying the command, the other monkeys left and went back to Ram Chander ji at Rameshwar. Sri Raghuvir ji looked around and said: “I don’t see the mighty Hanuman.” The other monkeys said to Ram ji: “he is still holding the mountain on his head since he heard your command.” Ram ji said: “go to him and call him back quickly.” One of the monkeys went to Hanuman ji and said: “let’s go! Raghuvir ji is calling for you.” Hanuman ji said: “I can’t go now.” The other monkey went back to Ram ji and told him what Hanuman had said: “the son of Pavan is not coming. He said to me: “when I was picking up this mountain, the mountain said to me: “don’t take me from here! If you want to pick me up then listen, where the feet of Sri Ram Chander ji are, put me under his feet. If you want to put me somewhere else, it is better that I stay here.” I said to him: “alright, where Ram Chander, the holder of the Sarang bow, is, I will put you under his feet as you wish. I promise you.” I picked up the mountain and started off. When I heard that the bridge on the ocean was complete, you told me to stop and not bring anymore mountains. I heard the command and got confused. If I left the mountain here, my promise would break. If I take the mountain to you, that will be disobedience of a command from you. So I thought of this and stayed here.” Sri Raghuvir ji heard this and said: “I will come as an Avatar in Dwapur. I will play many plays on that mountain. I will walk on that mountain for a long time.” The monkey went back to Hanuman and said to him what Ram ji told him. Hanuman then left the mountain where it was and came back to Ram Chander ji, where he was standing. Since then, this mountain has been here. In Dwapur, the Murari took an Avatar as the Madhusudhana. He played with the Gwala kids and Gopis on this mountain. See this mountain as really pure. Keshav spent a long time on this mountain, playing. He killed the clans of the Daynts. He killed many sinners.”
Guru ji sat near the Kaalindri (Yamuna) as he told Bhai Mardana ji the story. Bhai Mardana ji was really happy to hear the Katha of Gowardhan Mountain. When Guru ji came to Brij, there was a great Mela there. Many men and women came to the mountain. Bhramachaaris, Bairagis, Jattis, Satis, Vaishnavas, Tappis, and Sanyasis; many had come to the Brij. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, the Omniscient One, knew every heart. He saw the fog of ignorance in Kaliyuga. The people were blind. Nobody’s heart was pure. They were all tied by Maya and attachment. They would have never broken the bonds of their bodies. They were in pain from desire, anger, greed and ego. They were stuck in attachment. They did façades during the day, making up stories of Gyaan. They were drowning in the ocean of greed. They showed off their fakeness to others. In the night they sinned. Some would become Krishan and some would become Radha. The young people would disguise themselves and dance around. People would see them. The boys and girls would play like Krishan and Radha to do a façade. The dirty-minded people would see them and get aroused by lust. The boys and girls would meet each other and engage in lustful acts without fear; pretending to be Krishan and Radha. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji understood their drama and had the Rabab play. Guru ji uttered a Shabad in Ramkali Raag and sung it with love:
Ramkali Mahalla 1 Ashtpadia..
Ik Oankaar Satgur Prasaad..
The same moon rises, and the stars are the same; the same sun rises with its earth. The earth is the same, and the same wind blows. Look how the Yuga plays in the hearts of Jeevs, living beings. ||1||
Give up your desires to life. Those are accepted and approved you act like tyrants in Kaliyuga- recognize that this is the sign of Kali Yuga. ||1||Rahao||
Kali Yuga has not been heard to have come to any country, or to be sitting by any Teerath, sacred shrine. It is not where the generous person gives to charities, nor seated in the palaces, constructed. ||2||
If someone practices Truth, his truth turns to lies; the Tapp is not a successful Tapp. If someone chants the Lord’s Name, he is slandered. These are the signs of Kali Yuga. ||3||
Whoever rules, he is humiliated. Why should the servant be afraid, when the master is put in chains? He dies at the hands of his servant. ||4||
Chant the Praises of the Lord; Kali Yuga has come. The justice of the previous three Yugas is gone. If one obtains virtue of Bhagti, (given to them by Akaal Purakh) then one is in peace. ||1||Rahao||
In this turbulent age of Kali Yuga, Muslim law decides the cases, and the black-hearted Qazis are the judges. The words of Brahma’s Vedas, Atharvan and the others, which have the praises (of the Parmeshwar) that virtue, singing of the Lord’s Praises are good deeds. ||5||
Worship without faith; abstinence without truthfulness; the Janyow without chastity – what good are these? You may bathe and wash, and apply the tilak mark to your forehead, but without inner purity, there is no purity. ||6||
In Kali Yuga, the Koran and the Kataybs (Bible and Torah) have become accepted. The Pandits, scriptures and the Puranas are not respected. O Nanak, the Lord’s Name now is Rehman, the Merciful, but know that there is only One Creator. ||7||
Nanak has obtained the glorious greatness of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. There is no action higher than this. If someone goes out to beg for what is already in his own home, then he should be chastised. ||8||1||
(SGGS 902-903)
Guru Nanak Dev ji sang this Shabad in Raag Ramkali, in a loud and high pitch. Hearing him, many people came to him. They all sat down with love. There were many wise Pandits in the crowd who heard the Shabad and said: “please tell us the meanings of this Shabad. We see you as a great saint.” Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji spoke about the meanings of the Shabad: “oh wise ones, listen with your focussed minds: the moon, sun, stars, earth and wind are the same as they were in the 3 other Yugas. The Bhuddis of the people have become dirty though. This is what Kaliyuga is. There is no hope for the people of Kaliyuga. Their age is less. In rain, bubbles are formed in the water and pop. That’s how the people of Kaliyuga are, they are born and die in an instant. Kaliyuga didn’t come from any country nor did it go to any country. It didn’t make a fort nor a place to reside. Kaliyuga is the state of mind. The bad deeds and bad thoughts that people took on, that was the sign of Kaliyuga. Chastity, Satt and Tapp; the ones who claimed to practice these, they were not complete. If one would do the Simran of the Naam, they are slandered by everyone as doing a backwards thing. In Satyuga, if a sinner did one sin, the whole country would suffer. In Treta, the whole city would suffer. In Dwapur, the whole family suffered. Their family was destroyed. In Kaliyuga, whoever sins, they alone suffer for it. Whom the Satguru forgives and gives them the gift of Naam, they are only saved. There is no other solution. Churning the Atharv Ved, summarizing and pondering on it, it is determined that singing the glory of Parmeshwar is the best. Bathing and worshiping the Thakurs is useless. Till one does not cleanse the attachment and jealousy from the heart, everything else is useless. Truth is not earned nor spoken in Kaliyuga. Purity is not achieved. The True Name only breaks the bonds of attachment. The mind is impure. They show off being hypocrites. They suffer punishment of the stick of the Jumms. A peacock has beautiful colours and sings melodious songs. Afterall, it only pecks at dirty insects. That’s how the people of Kaliyuga are. They wear nice clothes and speak sweetly but are filled with lust and anger. They are trapped by greed. Ego drenches their minds. They go to Hell and feel the great pain. They then regret their actions when they are trapped by the Jumms. The greatness is achieved by the Simran of the Naam. There is nothing bigger than this. Otherwise, one is chastised by others who leaves the Guru and begs from others.” When Satguru ji said this, the hypocrites that were sitting there were embarrassed. The Pandits questioned Guru ji: “whose Upasana do you do in your mind? Do you do the Seva of the Nirgun or the Sargun? Please tell us your way.” Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji heard this and said: “I haven’t given any significance to the difference of the Sargun and the Nirgun. If there was a difference then I would do the different Sevas. See the Nirgun and Sargun as the same. The ones who see a difference are unwise people. The Nirgun Brahm is in all, as the Chetna, the consciousness. It can be seen as the same in all. The one that played in the Brij was the Sargun form of the Nirgun. He came as the Krishan Avatar, who lightened the load of Dharti, the earth. Ingrain his plays in your heart and make your heart pure. Wash your corruption. You are bonded by the attachment of the world. You can only be released if you do the Simran of Hari. Committing sins, you will feel pain in the end time. Chant the Naam which will give you joy. Singing the glory of Hari in Kaliyuga is the supreme act. There is nothing equal to it. Do the Bhagti and achieve joy. If you remain hypocrites, you will be in pain.” Hearing the words, that gave Mukti, from the mouth of the Giver of Mukti, the people made their hearts pure and bowed to Guru ji. They became Guru ji’s Sikhs and were in peace.
Many pilgrims came to Guru ji and bowed to him. They placed gifts in front of him and heard his words. They saw Guru ji as the great Avatar. Guru ji said to all: “do the Simran of the Master of the Universe. Do the Prema Bhagti. Your corruption from the mind will be destroyed. If you do this, you will receive Mukti.” Guru ji stayed there for 3 days. He destroyed the hypocrisy and travelled on. He saved many in that area who committed lustful acts while taking advantage of the dance of Krishan and Radha. Guru ji destroyed the pain with his discussions. He gave joy to all.
Where Ayodhya was located, we all arrived there in the blink of an eye as we all talked. Guru ji came to the River Sirju. Satguru ji grinded hypocrisy. The people of Ayodhya heard of Guru ji’s arrival. The people of Ayodhya came to where the Light of the Bedis was sitting. Many Pandits came and sat in front of Guru ji. They all bowed with love in their hearts. They were happy to see Guru ji’s beautiful form. When a great crowd gathered in front of Guru ji, Guru ji said: “I heard Sri Ram ji took all of the citizens of Ayodhya with him to Vaikunt. He took both high and low castes. Where did this city come from where I see big houses?” The Pandits heard this and said: “Sri Ram ji only took the Jeevs. These homes all stayed. The Jeevs only went to Vaikunt.” Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji said: “they went to Vaikunt who did Sri Ram ji’s Darshan with faith. You should do the Simran of the Naam. You will go to Vaikunt as well. You will live there. When you do the Prama Bhagti after meeting the true Guru, your attachment will be destroyed. The Darshan of the Complete Satguru is successful. Do the Simran of the Naam which will help you in the end. Become Gurmukhs (always thinking of the Guru) and let go of your desires and vices. You will be saved along with your ancestors.” The Pandits heard this and said: “how many types of Gurus are there?” Guru ji spoke to give them the answer: “one type of Guru is the Pandit Guru. Another is the Avdhoot who is not educated but is a Tapasvi. Another is the Mahapurakh, who is great and has a pure Bhuddi. Listen to their characteristics. The Pandit, educated, Guru, can’t swim but says: “there is the other shore. You can swim and get across. That’s how you can cross the river.” He doesn’t know how to swim but preaches to go across. He doesn’t do it himself but gives sermons on what to do. That is the Pandit Guru. He can translate the Vedas and the Puranas but is stuck in greed and attachment, spending his whole life. Meeting such a Guru, one is rewarded but one does not get the Gyaan in the heart. The Avdhoot Guru, uneducated but a good Tapasvi, he does not know Vidya. He met a saint and became a Jogi. He received the Gyaan in the heart and destroyed his attachment to the world. He can swim across the river but can’t take others across. Just as a stick floats on water, it can float but not save others; that is how the Avdhoot Guru is. The Mahapurakh Gurus are experts in all Vidyas. If a person meets such a Guru, they receive Mukti easily. Whoever he gives the wisdom to, he can give them Gyaan. Such great beings give joy to all. Seeing their great nature, if one earns themselves, they are blessed. They don’t go to the dimension of the Jumms. If one is to take another across the river, that person is like a ferryman. They can take them across on a canoe or a floating device. The Darshan of such a Mahapurakh Guru, the sins are washed away. The Mahapurakh Guru is the giver of Joy.” Hearing Guru ji’s words, the people’s minds were drenched in love. They bowed to Guru ji’s feet and recognized him as the Giver of Mukti. They said: “this world is full of pain. Please be compassionate and save us. Make us your Sikhs. Give us your good wisdom. We have heard of your glories before. You finally gave us your Darshan.” Seeing the humility of the people, the Compassionate One gave them the beautiful wisdom: “understand in your heart that the world is not going to last. It is “Anitya.” Do the Simran of the Satnam everyday. Practice stilling your Munn. When you keep practicing, you will meet with the blissful Prabhoo. When you see the world as a myth which will not last, your thoughts will easily stop.” Giving the wisdom to the people of Ayodhya, Guru ji set off from there.
Where Kanshi is now, we all arrived there. Guru ji saw a nice place near the shores of the Ganga and sat down. The water was pure and the waves were strong. The servants of Hari love the Satnam. The wise Pandits lived in that city. When they heard of Guru ji’s arrival, they all gathered and got ready to come to see Guru ji with joy. They said: “we have heard of complete saints. We will now go and do his Darshan.” Many men and Pandits came. They came and bowed their heads to Guru ji. They sat down with faith. They all questioned Guru ji: “we read the Vedas and Shastras everyday along with listening to them. That is our daily practice. We still are not at peace nor is our ego destroyed.” Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “oh Pandits, listen to my words and think about it. You have corruption in your minds so how would you follow what the Vedas say? Your heart wishes for pleasures and vices. The Bhuddi which gives peace, you have taken it out. When you recite the Vedas and Shastras, you are just showing off.” Guru ji then said a Shabad:
Sri Raag Mahalla 1..
Greed is the dog; falsehood is a Choora (street-sweeper). Cheating is eating a rotting carcass. Slandering others is putting the filth of others into your own mouth. The fire of anger is the Chandaal, who burns dead bodies at the cemetery. I am caught in these tastes and flavors, and in self-conceited praise. These are my actions, O Kartar! ||1||
O Baba, speak only that which will bring you honor. They alone are high of high, who are judged good at the Lord’s Door. Those with bad karma can only sit and weep. ||1||Rahao||
The pleasures of gold and silver, the pleasures of woman, the pleasure of the fragrances, the pleasure of horses, the pleasure of soft beds in homes, the pleasure of sweet treats and the pleasure of meat; -these pleasures of the human body are so numerous; how can the Naam, the Name of the Lord dwell in the heart? ||2||
Those words are acceptable, which, when spoken, bring honor. Harsh words bring regret. Listen, O foolish and ignorant mind! Those who are pleasing to Him are good. What else is there to be said of others? ||3||
That Wisdom, that honor and that wealth are good of those whose hearts has the Parmeshwar living in them. What praise can be offered to them? What other adornments can be bestowed upon them? O Nanak, those who lack the Lord’s Glance of Grace, do not give charity nor do they say the Lord’s Name. ||4||4||
(SGGS 15)
Be truthful to your minds: do you not indulge in pleasures and vices? You are stuck in the pleasures of vices. So how can the taste and bliss of the Naam come to you? There are 2 ways to read: one is how a player reads and the other is how a warrior reads. One is false. The warrior’s way is successful. The player, the showman, he has learnt but he does not touch the opponent’s body with his weapon. He wants to protect the other’s body and his own. He doesn’t let the weapon touch. He does this to entertain and to earn money; to show off to others. He reads but does not follow. It is useless to read. It is like the black thunder without water. The warrior saint, on the other hand, reads and listens with love. They do Satsang with love. They know that Agyaan is their enemy. They make sure they destroy the ignorance. Lust, anger, greed and ego; the warrior strikes these body parts of Agyaan to destroy them. The Shabads of the Satguru are the weapons. The saints use these weapons to strike, without delay. They strike the ignorance everyday. This is the Vidya of the warrior. I will give you another example by which you are not at peace: the Shastras are like weapons; the Munn is the lion. The ones who strike the lion with these weapons, they are great. The Kavis that wrote the Shastras are like forging the weapons. The Pandits who translate the Shastras are like the Shiklighars who clean the weapons. The ones who read the Shastras and kill the lion of the Munn, they are the warriors. The ones that read to make a living, they are like the merchants who sell the weapons. The ones who killed the lion of Munn, they are glorified in the world as the strongest. That person is the wielder of the weapon. The others call themselves warriors but they are not warriors.” Hearing these words, the scholars of Kanshi spoke: “whoever dies in this city of Shiva, they receive Mukti and have their sins washed away. The Shastras have spoken about this significance: whoever dies here, goes to the Dimension of Shiva. This place as glorified for this reason. This is place is the supreme.” The Guru of the World spoke: “when the time of death comes, one has to have the Mantra of Ram spoken to in the ear. Shiv ji says this Mantra in their ear to give them Mukti. Only then can one achieve Mukti. It is the glory of the Naam, not the city, that the Shastras speak about. It doesn’t matter which land or country you are in. The hearts where the Naam lives, they are given Mukti. Kabeer ji left Kanshi and went to Maghar (which was cursed as the land of Hadamba by Vyaas) to do the Simran of the Naam. He stayed in Maghar and did the Satsangat. He received Mukti when he left his body. Understand that the giver of Mukti is only the Satnam. It is illuminated in the whole world. There is nothing else that can give Mukti, even by millions of efforts.” The Pandits heard this and said: “there are many names of Hari. Which is the Name that gives Mukti? Please tell us the beautiful Name.” Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji said: “the ferry takes everyone across the river. On which ferry one boards, it takes you across. One utilizes that ferry. One is in joy as they reach the joyful shore. The Name which is given to you by the Guru, that is the one that will give you Mukti. The one who ingrains the wisdom of the Guru in their heart, that person crosses this world ocean.” Hearing these beautiful words, the Pandits said: “please see us as your humble servants and give us Mukti. We are in the shelter of your feet. There is nobody equal to you. Your Darshan is successful. Our pain of rebirth is gone.” When Guru ji heard this, he said the words of Mukti: “chant the Satnam. The 3 illnesses will be destroyed.” The people who took the Naam became Sikhs of the Guru. They did the Simran of Guru and destroyed their doubt. Guru ji stayed in Kanshi for a few more days. He then saw his mission to save the world and left this place.
2-10 Jagan Nath/ Kaliyuga Prasang
Obeisance to you, Chandi, Kalika, Sarasvati; destroyer of obstacles, giver of wisdom. Give me the gift so I may write the Katha of the Guru in delightful words, oh Mother. See me as your servant.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Listen Sri Angad Dev ji to the Katha which is beautiful. The Compassionate One travelled on to where the Jagan Nath (Odissa) place is. The Giver of Mukti arrived in that place. He came to the door of the Mandir of Hari. He sat there for some time. It was soon evening and all the Pandays came to the Mandir. They started to perform the Aarti in the Mandir of Jagan Nath. Sri Guru ji remained sitting still. He didn’t get up nor did he say anything. The Pandays saw this and got angry. They came close to Guru ji and spoke: “how are you and where did you come from? You are unwise and don’t know the greatness. Everyone stood up to do the Aarti but you remained sitting. You did not respect the Jagan Nath. You didn’t show any love. What were you thinking, not getting up?” Sri Guru ji, the Guru of the World, said: “I can see the Aarti going on, all the time. It is the supreme Aarti which is the glory of the Prabhoo. It is the highest. I make my heart pure and do that Aarit. This Aarti of yours is small. You have small samagris in your plate. Your heart is impure and not still. What reward will you receive?” The Pandays said: “how is your Aarti? Show us the Aarti you do everyday.” The Compassion One heard this and uttered the Shabad of Aarti:
Dhanasri Mahalla 1 Aarti..
Ik Oankaar Satgur Prasaad..
In the plate of the sky, the sun and moon are the lamps; all of the stars are the pearls. The fragrance of sandalwood (from the Maliyagar Mountain) is the incense, the wind is waiving the Chaur, and all the vegetation are flowers are the offerings. ||1||
What a beautiful lamp-lit worship service this is! O Destroyer of fear and pain, this is Your Aarti. The sound current of the Shabad is the sounding of the Bheri Nagara. ||1||Rahao||
Thousands are Your eyes, and yet You have no eyes. Thousands are Your forms, and yet You have not even one form. Thousands are Your lotus feet, and yet You have no feet. Without a nose, thousands are Your noses. I am enchanted with Your play! ||2||
The Divine Light is within everyone; You are that Light. Yours is that Light which shines within everyone. By the Guru’s Teachings, this Divine Light is revealed. That which pleases you, that is your true Aarti. ||3||
My soul is enticed by the honey-sweet lotus feet of Hari; night and day, I thirst for them. Bless Nanak, the thirsty song-bird, with the water of Your Mercy, that he may come to dwell in Your Name. ||4||1||7||9||

“This is the type of Aarti I do of Kartaar everyday. The ones who stop their mind and do this type of Aarit, they do not come back to this world.” The Pandays heard this and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. They said to each other: “this is a great being. His words are true. We do the Aarti but our minds are not still, even for a second.” Guru ji stayed there for 2 days (where Gurdwara Mangu Matt used to be). Guru ji then left in the morning.
We then came quite far to the shores of the ocean. The waves were quite high. The Compassionate One sat near the shore. Bhai Mardana ji started to sing a Shabad in a high pitch with made the heart joyful. He played the beautiful Rabab with joy. There was a dead body of a man at the shores of the ocean. A hungry panther came to eat the dead body. It smelled the head of the dead body and decided not to eat the flesh of the dead body. It was really hungry. It turned back and then returned. It then smelled the feet and then returned. Bhai Mardana ji asked Sri Prabhoo ji: “the panther didn’t eat the dead body. It moved back after it smelled the body. Tell us what happened. You know every heart, oh Omniscient One.” Guru ji said: “listen Mardana, the Shabad you just sang, this made the panther’s heart pure. It now understands sin and virtue. It knows what is good and bad to eat. This dead body was Bemukh from the Naam. When he was alive, he never did the Satsangat nor did he ever visit any saints. The Naam of Hari never came into his heart. He never did the Seva of any saint. The glory of Hari was never heard by his ears. The panther understood that the body was impure. It was afraid to eat such a body. He left the body for this reason, Mardana. Without the Naam, there are no blessings. The body is without fruit who does not do the Simran of the Naam nor visits the Satsangat. The person comes into the world to chant the Naam. One ignorantly indulges in the pleasures of the senses.” Bhai Mardana ji heard this and bowed. He said: “Dhan Prabhoo. You speak the truth.” We then travelled to another place.
There was a scary jungle where Guru ji sat. I will tell you the Katha as I saw it. A great darkness fell as dark winds blew. It was scary. We saw red. The wind was strong. Stones and dirt flew. The trees swayed. It was as they would be uprooted. It was so dark that you couldn’t see your own hand. It was painful. When Bhai Mardana ji saw the darkness, he got really scared. He covered his face with a cloth. He became anxious and laid down on the ground. He said to Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji: “you brought us to a scary jungle to kill us. If we die here, nobody will bury me with a shroud. It was painful to come here.” Guru ji laughed and gave him hope: “why are you scared Mardana? Nothing will come close to you. Let the trees and rocks fly. Why are you so anxious?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “listen Prabhoo ji, I am scared. I am shivering with the cold wind blowing. This wind storm is here to take my soul. I will die today.” As he was speaking, I big demon Daynt appeared. His head touched the sky and his feet were deep to the Patals. His teeth were big and scary. His nostrils were like deep dark wells. Bhai Mardana ji lifted the cloth from his faith and saw the scary demon. He got scared and said: “we may be saved by the windstorm but this Daynt will eat me. He won’t touch you though.” Guru ji said: “he is nothing. He will go away. Say Vahiguru and be patient. Don’t be afraid of anything.” It was Kaliyuga in the Daynt form. He changed to fire then. There was a lot of smoke all around. Bhai Mardana ji covered his face again and laid on the ground. He was surprised to see all the smoke. Kaliyuga changed from fire to black clouds. He wanted to test Guru ji. Kaliyuga came for this purpose. The black clouds were like a dark night. Lightening looked like a sword. It began to hail. The hail was like rocks. Guru ji sat with patience. Nothing touched him. Nothing touched any of us. Kaliyuga then understood: “it is the Avatar of the Prabhoo.” Kaliyuga then became a human with fire coming out of its body. His body was made of gold. In one hand he held his tongue and in the other hand he held is Linga. He came to where Guru ji was. Guru ji laughed and said: “Mardana, get up and watch the drama. Be in attention and be patient. Don’t be afraid.” Kaliyuga came and bowed to Guru ji. He spoke of his mistake: “please forgive my mistake. I didn’t know your greatness. This is my time now. I rule the universe now which you gave to me. The actions that people do now, I have taken on such a form. They have discarded all of the good virtues. They only care for 2 Indrees, the tastes of the tongue and the pleasures of the Linga. They earn sins. They are shameless. They don’t respect their parents nor their Guru. They only care for the 2 Indrees. I am the Master of this time so my wisdom has become backwards as well. I tried to cheat you without fear. It is your greatness that you forgive. Please forgive me. You are the benevolent Supreme Purakh.” The Master of the Universe said: “what is your name and where are you from? For what task have you come here? Why did you show such deceit?” Guru ji wanted us to hear who it was, which is why he asked. Kaliyuga said: “listen Guru ji, I am Kaliyuga. I came to do your Darshan. I came to bow to you. I wanted to test you and that’s why I showed you deceit.” Sri Guru ji said: “tell us your qualities and which army is with you. How will your rule be?” Kaliyuga said: “deceit is my warrior who is at the front. He carries the flag. Attachment is my strongest king. Violence is the general. Lust, Anger, Greed and Ego are the warriors on the elephant. Jealousy, Slander, Loot, and Desire; they are mounted on chariots. Laziness, Gambling, Intoxications and bad characters are the warriors mounted on the horses. Possessiveness and Desires along with Theft are the foot soldiers. Who else can I say? Attachment has the 4 types of armies. They attack in all 10 directions. They kill without peace. Nobody has withstood their ground in front of this army. There might be 1 in a billion. This army has annihilated many. I don’t see the patience in anyone to face them. Many forts have been destroyed. Nobody remained. My warrior, Hypocrisy has been victorious with anger. He has taken his companions everywhere. There is no place left. This is my rule.” Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji said:
Ramkali M:1..
Whoever is in charge, is humiliated. Why should the servant be afraid?
When the master is put in chains? He dies at the hands of his servant. ||4||
(SGGS 902)
“If you are the Master now, we are the Servants of Kartaar. When you give your report, you will be under my command.” Kaliyuga got scared and bowed with his hands folded. He became humble and said: “this is why I came to you. You are the Sri Nanak Avatar. This is no difference between you and Kartaar. The Ikankaar Deva, the Master of all Devatas; please accept my offerings. The mistakes I have done, please forgive them. The palaces of gold which have gems in the walls; pearls on the doors; fragrances sprinkled of musk, saffron, sandalwood pastes; in which one is happy sitting in; I will make such homes for you. Come and see this palace. If you wish, I can bring it here now. This is my offering.” Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji uttered Gurbani:
Ik Oankaar Satgur Prasaad..
Raag Sriraag Mahalla 1 Ghar 1..
If I had a palace made of pearls, inlaid with jewels, scented with musk, saffron and sandalwood, a sheer delight to behold.
Seeing this, I might go astray and forget You, and Your Name would not enter into my mind. ||1||
Without the Hari, my soul is scorched and burnt. I consulted my Guru, and now I see that there is no other place at all. ||1||Rahao||
(SGGS 14)
Kaliyuga then said: “if you don’t want this, then take the women of the Devatas. Their bodies are beautiful. You can enjoy their bodies with love. Where beautiful beds are set with rubies embedded into them, you can stay there for a long time. Please take this gift from me.” Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji heard this and said:
If the floor of this palace was a mosaic of diamonds and rubies; and if my bed was encased with rubies, and if the heavenly beauties, their faces adorned with manis with colours, tried to entice me with sensual gestures of love. -seeing these, I might go astray and forget You, and Your Name would not enter into my mind. ||2||
(SGGS 14)
Kaliyuga then said: “if you don’t want these, then take the 9 Niddhis and 18 Siddhis. If you take the 18 Siddhis, you can disappear or re-appear anywhere you want. You can go anywhere. You will be in joy. Nobody can stop you. Everyone will fear you. They will worship your feet with love. Please accept this offering from me.” The Giver of Mukti spoke:
If I were to become a Siddha, and work miracles, summon wealth and become invisible and visible at will, so that people would hold me in awe -seeing these, I might go astray and forget You, and Your Name would not enter into my mind. ||3||
(SGGS 14)
Kaliyuga said: “if you don’t want this, then become the King of the world. You can command at will. Place your foot on the throne. Place your foot and command everyone. The world will obey you. You will have the greatest endless army. Your radiance will be huge. Please take this gift. Please accept this oh Master.” Guru ji then said the final Pauri of the Shabad to Kaliyuga:
If I were to become an emperor and raise a huge army; sit on a throne, issuing commands and collecting taxes- O Nanak, all of this could pass away like a puff of wind. Seeing these, I might go astray and forget You, and Your Name would not enter into my mind. ||4||1||
(SGGS 14)
Kaliyuga then spoke with humility: “listen Guru ji, you are the greatest of all. You took an Avatar during my rule. You came to save the people. I have come to your feet. You are making this meeting a failure. You did not accept any gift from me. You didn’t fulfill my wish. If you take my gift then I would know that you have blessed me. Till you don’t accept my gift, I won’t be happy. I wish for your compassion.” Hearing the words of anxiety, Satguru ji was compassionate and spoke: “if you wish to give me a gift, then give me this: the Sikhs that love me, your army should not affect them. Naam, charity and bathing, don’t make my Sikhs forget these. Your shadow should not touch them, who have faith in my words. If you want to give me something, then give me this. Don’t give pain to my Sangat.” Kaliyuga spoke with his hands folded: “oh Prabhoo, I speak while worshiping your feet. I am under your command. I would never do such a foolish act as to disobey you. I have the command of the Ikankaar, which I will tell you: I am to turn the wisdom of all and make them do bad deeds. Theft, infidelity, slandering, lying, greed, desires; they should be tied up in these. The dacoits will call themselves warriors. The slanderers will be respected. The ones who talk a lot will be considered smart and intelligent. The ones who speak the truth will be called a fool. The virtuous people will be disrespected. The fools will sit near the kings. The humans will be houses of sins. They will be stingy and never show charity. They will turn their backs on Dharma and be in pain in the end. The Brahmins will become merchants to earn money. The farmers will be respected a lot. The ones who will recite the Vedas and think of the Brahm Vidya; people will see them as ones who waste time and wander endlessly. The kings will always say: “we are in a financial loss.” They will steal from the public. The Sanyasis will gather a lot of wealth, secretly. The Ghristis will have less to eat and wear. What else can I say to you? The radiance of my time; the truth, Tapp, abstinence, Dharma, Upasana; I will destroy them all at once. This was the command of Kartaar. You are the Kartaar. Whatever you tell me to do Prabhoo, I will obey. I am under your command. Please take my gifts. Golden palaces, wealth; when you take it, I will be happy.” Sri Guru ji laughed loudly. He was happy and then said: “your radiance is the strongest. You spoke the truth. You are the strongest of all the Yugas. This was my word. In your time, the glory of Kartaar will be radiant. In Satyuga, one lived for 100,000 years. In Treta the age limit was 10,000 years. In Dwapur it was 1,000. In Kaliyuga, the age is so small. Whoever sings the glories with love, they will be in joy in a small amount of time. They will be happier and be saved quickly. If you want to give me something; the golden homes of gems and diamonds, when I come in my 4th incarnation, I will take your gifts along with money.” Kaliyuga heard this and was really happy. He bowed to Guru ji’s feet and said: “I won’t go near your Sangat. I will give pain to the hypocrites and other people. If the Sikhs earn your words, my powers won’t work on them.” He gave his gift and took blessings from Guru ji. He bowed his head and took leave. The ones who read or listen to this Katha with faith, Kaliyuga won’t affect them. Sri Guru ji travelled on from there. The Benevolent One went on to save the people.
