2-56 Getting Ready to Immerse into the Light
Look for the compassion of the Guru, always. It is the everlasting joy. The vices of your mind, destroy them. The Bhajan of Hari, if you don’t do this, you will see the world as true. Sing the praises and go to Hari’s sanctuary. Bring the mind to the shelter of Hari and destroy your ego. If you don’t do this, the mind will wander in the body, never being still. If you want to easily swim across the world ocean, speaking is useless, do the action now.
Sri Guru ji gave his Darshan. He was the peaceful form, the ultimate Gyaan. Bhai Sadharan ji came at that time. He folded his hands and said: “sandalwood, musk and other items have been grinded and prepared. They were sprinkled in the home in the great way. The place has been cleaned and the fragrances have been spread. What your command was, the Kusha Aasan has been laid out.” Bhai Sadharan ji’s throat swelled with emotion as he spoke. He shed tears from his eyes. Many Sikhs stood up and did Guru ji’s Darshan. Many did his Darshan while sitting down. Everyone heard Bhai Sadharan ji and began to shed tears. A lot of tears were shedding from many eyes. It was like compassion took on many bodies. They lost their patience. Guru ji, the Gyaan form, saw the Sangat crying and said sweet words: “see the love for the body as false. Why do you have such conflict in your minds? The body meets and separates in this way. The day comes up followed by night. If the people meet with the Shabad, they forever remain drenched in its colour. They never separate. They are like water immersing into water. The ones who wish to meet with me and don’t want to separate, they should practice the Shabad. Listen to it (Sravan), accept it (Manan) and implement it (Nidhyasan) into their lives. They will undoubtedly meet me. They will never separate. They will be One forever. For this reason, stop putting yourselves through this pain. Sing the Shabads and be in joy. The world that you see will be destroyed one day. It is forever changing. Nothing is forever. What you see as still will not remain. The moon and sun lighten the world but they will die one day. The support of the Devatas, the Sumer Mountain, that will be destroyed. It won’t take long. The earth, water and deep oceans; they will all lose their patience in front of death. Fire and wind, the mighty, they will also come under death and lose their power. The mighty Rakshishes and kings, they will be stung by death one day. The Avatars and warriors, they left their bodies. The Sidhs, Devatas, Gandarvs, Kinnars, Jachs and others, they will not exist one day. Jumms, stars, Inder, Kuber and others will die one day. It won’t take long. The creator of the universe, Brahma, he will not exist one day, going into the Brahm form during the Maha Pralay. Hari Vishnu whom the world chants, his Hari-ness will be gone one day and immerse into the Brahm. The scary form of Shiva, he will be met with the death and not exist one day. Akaash, space, which is the support of all, it will be destroyed meeting death one day. The Jeevs are many in numbers. They will be all trapped by death one day. Nobody will remain here. When their times come, they will all be destroyed. Death is smaller than small. It is stronger than the strongest. It makes the highs, low and the lows, high. It makes the rye into a mountain and the mountain into a rye. It ruins the established and establishes the ruined. It is really strong and can do as it wishes. Nobody can remain patient in front of it. The death holds the bow of impossible. Attachment and hatred are its thick and sharp arrows. It destroys the world and then creates it. It is like a child’s play. It has no remorse destroying the creation like a child happily destroys its own made sand castle. It makes the sun and moon like two balls and plays with them. The Brahm is like the Ghulair tree. The galaxies are like the hairs. They are like the fruits. The Death eats all these galaxies like fire eats ghee. It is never satiated. Death can never be recognized. Death can only be known by watches, months and years. Death is like the fisherman who throws a net to catch the fish. Many Jeevs get caught in the net of Death. Many are stuck in time. There is no way to escape this net. They die in pain. They are never at peace. This whole creation made of the 5 primal elements, Death has eaten it many times and then created them back up again, easily. It creates Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva again. When it wishes to go into himself, the 3 Devatas are immersed and creation ceases to exist. It kills all. It is without compassion and pity. It is harsh. It is like the lion and the universe is like the deer. The Brahm is like the Lotus flower, untouched by Death. The Brahm is Akaal. Death does not go near Akaal. Death is powerless in front of Akaal. Peace and Maitri (friendliness) are the seeds. The consciousness is the illumination. The Death immerses into this Lotus. Other than the lotus from which Death is made from, Death can eat everything. For this reason, do the practice of the Shabad. The hidden understanding will be illuminated to you. Listen Sikhs, let go of your pain. Destroy your ego and connect to the Aad. See the world as a myth and understand this. The supreme truth, think about that and ingrain it in your heart. This is the step to Mukti. Do the Simran of Satnam, day and night.” In this way, Guru ji gave the deep wisdom to all. He destroyed their Agyaan.
It was morning. Guru ji came out of the Dharamsala. Everyone shouted Jaikaras. The Vedas were being read. The Shabads of Gurbani were being sung. Where the Kusha was laid out, Guru ji came there. Mata Sulakhani ji saw her husband getting ready and thought: “my sons will be upset. They didn’t come to meet their father and this time. They didn’t have even a little faith in their father’s word.” Mata ji stood in front of the Prabhoo. She folded her hands and said: “I request you to call your sons again. Please send a Sikh to them. They will obey you this time and come. You are the home of forgiveness. It is good that they come and see you right now. Please accept my request.” The Head of the Bedis saw his wife as humble. He commanded a Sikh and said: “tell my two sons to come.” The Sikh went to the sons and said: “the Guru is about to immerse. There is no doubt. Your mother has requested him to call you. He sent me to you. There is no delay now. If you wish to see him, go now. It would be good for you.” Baba Sri Chand ji and Baba Lakhmi Das ji heard about their mother and became depressed. They quickly got up and went to their father. They talked amongst themselves: “we hope he really isn’t going.” The sons went to go see their father but listen to what happened next: to what Guru ji did. Guru ji took a white sheet over his body, covering his face. Guru ji laid down in front of everyone. They all watched. Guru ji left his body. The Pranas had left. He told everyone not to cry but everyone began to cry. They started to shout out in pain. The separation of Guru ji could not be tolerated by anyone. The people began to cry out loud.
The Devatas were happy as Guru ji was coming to their dimensions. The Devatas showered flowers onto Guru ji. The Devatas sang songs of celebration. They played instruments with Raags and Taals. Shivji came on top of Nandi, whose body is white; who has the moon of the dhooj (2nd) on his forehead. Snakes are his jewellery. He wears the heavy lion skin on his shoulder. The waves of the Ganga, that wash the sins, flow from the dreadlocks of his top knot. Parvati was beside him on the left. He held the Trishool in his right hand and wore the skulls around his neck. He had love in his heart, coming to see Guru Nanak Dev ji. The 6-headed son of Shiva, Kartikeya; the elephant head son, Ganesh; came with Shiva. Many Ganns came with Shiva to see the form of Guru Nanak Dev ji. They were all happy to see him. They shouted: “Jai Giver of Joy; Jai Master of the Devatas; Jai beloved of the servants!” Shivji, his sons and his Ganns folded their hands and bowed. They showered flowers over Guru ji. Brahma ji mounted his swan; Naarad ji by his side; the wise Sarasvati, Bhud, Bisharad; all came with love in their hearts. They came playing the Veena. Sanak, Sanand, Sanatan and Sanat Kumar came. Kaushik, Bhringi, Vashisht, Angra, Pulast; Attar, August, Prashar, and Vyaas all did Guru ji’s Darshan and felt bliss. Valmiki, Rome, Kaak Bhasund the wise, Bakdalab and other great Rishis came. Bhagats: Namdev ji, Jai Dev ji, Dhanna ji, Sain ji, Kabeer ji; all came to do the Darshan of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. Shaishnaag, Inder, Vishnu, Varun, Surya, Chander, Kuber; all felt bliss seeing Guru ji. Kinnars, Gandarvs, Agni, Pavan; all came with joy. They sang in celebration. They brought fistfuls of flowers from the Kalapbrish. They showered the flowers and sang Jaikaras. Vishnu ji and Lakshmi came to worship the feet of Guru Nanak Dev ji. A beautiful vessel that had Manis and precious gems in it, came to get Guru Nanak Dev ji. It was really bright. Which Kavi is great enough to describe this vessel? The riders of the vessel waived Chaurs on the vessel. Where the Light of the Bedis was, the vessel came there. Sri Guru ji came into his real form, the form of Maha Vishnu, whom Vishnu meditated upon. His feet were red like the lotus. Manis were in his anklets. His legs were like the banana tree. There was a golden belt around his abdomen. His abdomen had three folds. The navel was deep like a whirlpool. He had four arms, wearing gold armlets. In two hands he had a Chakram and a conch. In the other two hands he had a lotus and a Gurj. He wore golden bracelets with precious gems. The armlets had precious gems. His shoulders were wide and strong like bull shoulders. His chest was really wide. A beautiful Vaijanti Mala was around his neck. The Kaustik Mani around his neck, looked radiant. His neck was long like a conch. Chander was embarrassed by his beauty. He was smiling. His chin was deep. His smile was priceless. His teeth were radiant, like pearls. His lips were red. His nose was sharp. He wore golden earrings in his ears. The radiance of his face gave joy to all. His eyes were like lotus petals. They were filled with compassion that cut the pains. His eyebrows were like bows. His forehead was wide. He wore a peacock crown that was radiant. His skin was black like black clouds. He wore yellow clothes, that looked like lightening in the black clouds. He came into his real form and boarded his vessel.
At that time, the two sons came to where the people were crying. The sons were surprised to see the crowd. The Sangat did not go back. The 2 sons reached their father with great difficulty, cutting through the crowd. Mata Sulakhani ji saw her sons and said: “why did you not come before? He called you twice. You didn’t come. Why didn’t you think about this? Now he is gone. You will be only left with regret. The Master has immersed into the Light.” Baba Sri Chand ji and Baba Lakhmi Das ji heard this and were shocked. They were depressed of not seeing their father. They regretted their actions. Kavi Santokh Singh ji said: “the faith of the sons came when Guru ji left his body.”
2-57 Vahiguru Stotar/ Immersing into the Light
Make the Shabad of the Satguru into a Diva and light it into the heart home. Destroy the darkness of Agyaan and distinguish the difference between infinite and finite.
Baba Sri Chand ji and Baba Lakhmi Das ji came and did an Ardaas in front of their father. They stood with their hands folded and had deep faith in their hearts. They said: “oh Master of the World, Giver of Joy to all; oh Omnipotent One, treasure of virtues; you are capable and powerful in every way. Your virtues are unspeakable. We thought you were like other humans. We didn’t know that you were the sustainer and the cause of the universe. You are the great destroyer. Now we have faith. You are the Master of the Trilok; we have no doubt about this. You left without meeting us. We are left with regret for our mistakes. We have a deep wish in our heart to have your Darshan. Please hear our plea and be happy with us, oh Omnipotent Father. Please forgive our mistakes from the past. For the sake of Sri Kartaar: you left without meeting or speaking to us; just as you stayed for 3 days at the plea of Mata ji when you called us before, please come back to us for an hour. Come and speak to us.” The two sons did their Ardaas. There was a great crowd around them. Mata Sulakhani ji was near Guru ji’s feet. She was shedding a lot of tears. Kings, Shahs, Brahmins, Sikhs and others were doing the Simran of Satnam, the Giver of Joy. Everyone stood with their hands folded. The Light of the Bedis heard the pleas. To speak to his sons, the Destroy of Hell pain, got up and sat upright. He was blooming like a red lotus. His eyes were wide and blossoming. His face was radiant. The men and women saw this miracle and shouted out “Jaijaikaars.” Guru Nank Dev ji saw his 2 sons standing in front of him. Guru Nanak Dev ji spoke with compassion to his sons: “you asked for my life at this time, if you would have asked for 100 years for me to live now, you would have had your wish fulfilled. You asked for an hour and so it has been granted. Nothing is in your hands. It is as Nirankaar wills it. That only happens. It cannot be erased. What is in your minds, reveal it to me now. I called you before but you didn’t come. You did as you wished before.” Baba Sri Chand ji folded his hands and spoke: “listen oh Cloud of Joy, you are omniscient. We know that now. You know everything without us saying anything. If you still ask, we will say it: the sons are deserving of the father’s assets. You left us empty and established Bhai Lehna ji on your throne. You left us empty from your powers. You did an unorthodox thing. You gave the other person your greatness. What did your sons receive in this world?” Guru ji heard the words of his sons. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, the Giver of Mukti, said a Salok:
M:1..
Hundreds of thousands of virtues and good actions (at your own convenience), and hundreds of thousands of blessed charities,
hundreds of thousands of Tapps at Teeraths, and the practice of Sehj Yoga in the jungles,
hundreds of thousands of courageous actions and giving up the pranas (life) on the field of battle,
hundreds of thousands of readings of Surtis, hundreds of thousands of divine wisdoms and meditations and readings of the Vedas and the Puranas,
The Creator who created the creation, he ordained coming and going,
O Nanak, all these wills (of your mind, at your own convenience) are false. True is the Insignia of His Grace. ||2||
(SGGS 467)
“If one makes decision by their own mind, not even one Sidhi can be completed without your Karma. The greatness comes be good Karma. Nobody has been given the greatness of this seat without surrendering your own will. Whatever the Sri Kartaar wishes, that becomes reality in front of your eyes. Giving and taking is in his control. Nobody else can do anything.” The sons heard this and became depressed. They became humble and said: “there is nothing in our hands. You can do as you wish. We will not be followed in the world. Nobody will give us any gifts. This will be bad on the honour of your name.” They went quiet after saying that. The Gunkhaani became compassionate. He spoke to his sons: “Ridhis and Siddhis will be in your family. Clothes, wealth and items in your homes will never be in shortage for you. The dogs of Gurus and Peers are worshipped in the world. You are the sons of my body. Why wouldn’t people give you gifts with love? You will have unlimited powers. My Sikhs will do your Pooja with respect. They will follow you. You will sit in the highest seats in this world. Nobody will be equal to you. Listen though, the greatness of the Shabad, which has been achieved by Guru Angad Dev ji in a great way, think about this in your hearts; look how hard he worked for the greatness. He stayed without ego. He was always obedient. He loved my Seva in his heart. He didn’t delay any of my commands. If my command was straight or crocked, he obeyed.” Guru ji praised other traits of Guru Angad Dev ji and then went quiet. (Guru ji had given his unlimited powers to both his sons. Baba Sri Chand ji remained a celibate and preached the wisdom of his father when he received the Brahmgyaan, while his brother settled down with a family, also receiving the Brahmgyaan. Baba Sri Chand ji started the Udaasi Samprada of the greatest scholars and saints. He is regarded as one of the greatest men to ever walk this earth and was respected and consulted by the Gurus. As he was the son of Guru Nanak Dev ji, Baba Sri Chand ji was regarded as the same by the Gurus and their families that followed) Guru ji gave his Darshan for an hour. Thousands of people stood with their hands folded. They all bowed.
The peaceful Guru sat in the middle. His face was radiant like the moon. The Sikhs looked like stars around the moon. His face was beautiful. His face was like the morning sun, red. The rays were the Gyaan. The hearts of the servants were blooming with the Gyaan. Guru ji’s eyes were full of compassion. His heart was calm and serene. He looked at everyone and blessed them. The people did his Darshan and received the supreme Gyaan.
Baba Bhudda ji folded his hands and looked towards Guru ji’s feet. He said: “Guru ji, I wish to hear your words. Sri Guru ji, this is the wish of all the Sikhs. The supreme “Vahiguru Satnam” is your highest wisdom. You gave this wisdom to the Sangat. You told everyone to do the Simran all day and all night. This will give the highest status of Mukti. Please tell us the meanings of the Satnam. The servants will listen to this and be in joy. They will be blessed. This is your last Darshan. Please give us the last wisdom. This is the wish of everyone. We are eager to hear the meanings. Please bless everyone, Sri Guru ji. Fulfill everyone’s wish.” Hearing this and knowing the wish of the Sikhs, Guru ji spoke words of Amrit. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, the Compassionate One spoke:
“Satnam Sri Vahiguru, listen to the meanings of it. Doing the Simran of this Mantra is the greatest reward. It erases the 84 Lakhs of births. “Gu” means darkness, Agyaan (not knowing that you are the Infinite Aatma). The Jeev wails in pain because of this. It is the root of pain. This gives many births to the Jeev. It dies and takes births. It suffers many problems because of Agyaan. The Mantra destroys this Agyaan like light destroys darkness, which is the meaning of “Ru,” the light. The one that is awesome and amazes you; putting you in an amazed state; making you say “Vah!” That is the amazing Guru, “Vahiguru.”
The insentient items you see, the things you experience by the senses, these things grow, born and die. By whose support this whole universe grows and dies, the universe seems to look like it is real; the one that makes everything grow and die; that is the Chetan (consciousness/awareness), “Ru.” Ru is the Aatma. Ru is the light. That which is amazing, (that sees all but can’t be seen), say “Vahiguru,” from your mouth. (It is your Aatma.)
The one that gives food to all and gives power to digest it, the reason of the Pranas, the cause of breaths, the one that gives life and awareness to the Indriyas (senses), the one that begins the senses; the Antiskaran (Munn, Bhuddi, Chit and Hankaar), they are insentient without the Aatma; the Chetna that gives the mind the energy to make efforts; that which is amazing, say “Vahiguru,” from your mouth.
That who has thousands of heads but remains headless; has no eyes but has infinite eyes; has thousands of forms; has thousands of noses but not one nose; has no ears but listens with infinite ears; has thousands of hands and feet but not one hand or foot; illuminates many lights; that which is amazing, say “Vahiguru,” from your mouth.
That whom Death is afraid of and runs away; that who ends the lives of the Jeevs but has no end; that whom the universe fears but gives patience to all; Pavan and the Trilok fear him; the earth fears him; Surya fears him; fire has heat by his power; that which is amazing, say “Vahiguru,” from your mouth.
The one that gives fear to the universe; who is fierce and scary, who is the most radiant and powerful; the one that creates, sustains and destroys all; the form of Death, who is the Death of the Death; that which is amazing, say “Vahiguru,” from your mouth.
The one who is the Gyaan of the Vedas but is above the Vedas; has no difference; is inside all and outside of all; inside the moving and the still; has many reflections but is only One; is without support but is the support of all; is countless within the quantifiable universe; is different from all, Shaishnaag obeys him; that which is amazing, say “Vahiguru,” from your mouth.
The moon of the first day which is the power of the 15 days, the fragrance in the flower, ghee in milk, the sweetness in the mango, the power of the Halahala poison, he lives within all these. That which is amazing, say “Vahiguru,” from your mouth.”
Satguru ji told the meanings of the Vahiguru Mantra to the Sangat. He said: “do the Simran of Vahiguru, day and night. This will give you the highest status.” The meanings of Satnam Vahiguru have been written in 8 Chands. Whoever reads this everyday with love and bows to the Guru; children, wealth and wishes would all be attained from the Satguru. In both Loks, the Guru will be your guide.
The Sangat was really happy to hear the Katha from Guru ji’s mouth. The Sangat was like lotus flowers. Baba Bhudda ji stood up and sang the praises of Guru Nanak Dev ji:
“I bow to the Sachidananda, Gobind, Jogi. You are the Master of the Trilok. You experience all but remain detached. You are the form of Nirankaar who appeared in the world. You chanted the Satnam and planted the seed of Sikhi. You went to the 4 Chaks and foreign lands. You are the Guru and made many Sikhs. You gave the gift of Brahmgyaan to your servants. You saw the people of Kaliyuga in pain and were compassionate towards them. You saved the biggest sinners. There is no one equal to you. You are benevolent. You are the witness in all the bodies. You are without cause and are detached. You reside in all. You are the Deen Bhandhu, friend of the poor. We come to your shelter. Whoever chants your name with love, you give your hand and save them. You assist your servants. You came into the family of Bedis. If someone meditates on your form and comes to your shelter; they will undoubtedly receive Mukti and be in bliss. I bow to your lotus feet, oh Giver of Mukti. The big ego and attachments are carefree elephants in the mind. The hearts of your servants are the jungles. You are the lion that scares the elephants away. You are by the side of your Sikhs, always. Nobody can hurt their hair. Your qualities cannot be counted to the end. Your form is greater than the greatest. Whoever meditates on your form for Mukti, you give them bliss by your compassion. For the ocean of pain, you are the August Munni (who drank the ocean). You are omnipresent and do the play. The servants trapped in attachment, who gave them Mukti. Always Jai, always Jai, Namastang, Namastang!”
Sri Baba Bhudda ji sang 8 Chands to praise Guru ji. The Satguru heard this and gave him the status of “Bhai.” The Sikh Sangat heard this. Whoever reads or listen to these 8 Chands with a still mind, they will receive all of the items they wish for. Their illness would go away. The lust and anger from their minds will be destroyed.
The Sangat heard the praises of Guru ji and were happy. There were Jaikaras all around. They heard the praise of the Satguru which showed the reverence. Everyone did Guru ji’s Darshan. Guru ji then said: “make a boundary around me. Surround me and set up a tent. Everyone should leave the tent then. Do the Simran and sing the praises of Parmeshwar.” The servants: Bhai Sadharan ji, Bhai Kamala ji, Baba Bhudda ji, Baba Sri Chand ji and the others set up a boundary around Guru ji and put up curtains. Guru ji took a white sheet over his body and covered his face. He was going to Sach Khand. He laid down. Everyone began to cry again. They had lost their patience. Thousands were shedding tears. The preparations of the cremation began. Sandalwood was set up. Flowers and fragrances were brought. Incense was lit; essences were sprinkled. Sesame seed oil and other items were brought. Men and women cried as they set this up. They sang the praises of Guru Nanak Dev ji.
During this time, a group of Pathaans had come with the wishes of doing Guru Nanak Dev ji’s Darshan. They all had weapons fastened to them. They were the Mureeds of Guru Nanak Dev ji’s feet. They were warrior employees in an army. They were Sikhs. There were curtains all around Guru Nanak Dev ji. Nobody was allowed to go in, as per Guru ji’s orders. The Pathaans saw this and were upset. They became anxious and said to the Sikhs: “you are the Sikhs of the Guru. We are his Mureeds. This is the time for final meetings. We wish to see the Compassionate One, one last time. He is our Peer. We live very far. When we got the news, we left right away. Let us see him. We will be upset otherwise.” The Sikhs said: “don’t be stubborn. This is not the time to do his Darshan. If you had come just a little before, you would have been able to see the Complete Guru. You can bow from this place. Your pains will be destroyed as Guru ji is everywhere. Listen to what we are saying. Think about what we are saying. We should obey his commands.” The Khans said: “we won’t listen. Why are you making up stuff? Just as you did his Darshan, we wish for it too. We were close to our Peer just as you were. He was equally the Turks’ as he was the Hindus’. He was the Guru of both. Don’t take sides and discriminate with us. He wanted to rid everyone of this discrimination.” They were strong Khans who carried weapons but they were speaking the truth. They weren’t stopping. The Hindus picked up weapons. A conflict began. Nobody listened to each other. There was a lot of yelling. The servants near Guru ji, Baba Bhudda ji and Bhai Sadharan ji, heard the conflict and came outside. Guru ji was alone. He made his body disappear. He decided to take his body to Sach Khand so to end the conflict that was ensuing. He also gave the message that: the Guru was never the body. The Guru was always the Gyaan. The Gyaan had taken the incarnation of a human body.
As the conflict got worse, Guru ji boarded his vessel from Sach Khand and went up. The Devatas shouted: “Jai Jai.” They showered flowers of the Kalapbrish on Guru ji and did his Aarti. Beautiful Chaurs were waived over Guru ji’s beautiful form. Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and other Devatas showered sandalwood essences. They sounded the conches as they did Guru Nanak Dev ji’s Aarti. The Apsaras came and danced. The Gandarvs sang praises in Raags. The vessel went towards the sky. There was a great celebration in the other dimensions. As much as the Devatas had capability, they went as far as they were allowed to go to see Guru ji. Guru ji went to the highest place, Sach Khand. It is the abode of the Nirankaar. Guru ji sat on his Takhat as the Devatas bowed to his feet and went back to their dimensions. Guru Nanak Dev ji was in Sach Khand, his home.
On earth, listen to the Katha of what happened after Guru ji left. The Khans made a lot of noise. They said: “we will make a procession for our Peer and bury his body in a grave. We will do it our way now. He was our Peer who fulfilled our wishes. We won’t be stopped.” They were stubborn and were ready to fight. They were warriors who didn’t stop. The Hindus stood in the way. They tried to stop the Khans. The wise Sikhs that were present, they discussed with each other about the situation: “the Turks are strong.” They said to everyone: “let’s forget what we are doing and do an Ardaas to Sri Satguru ji. Let’s see what his wish is and we will obey him. Let’s do this and stop this conflict.” When the Sikhs said this to the Pathaans, they agreed.
The two Sikhs, Baba Bhudda ji and Bhai Sadharan ji, went back to where Guru Nanak Dev ji had laid down. They went inside and noticed that the place was empty. They were shocked to see that Guru ji was not there. They picked up the sheet and told the Sikhs outside. They said: “why did you fight so much? The Satguru solved the problem. His body has disappeared. The Kusha Asana only has his Chadras. His body is gone. Don’t fight. He was never the body. He was always the Jot. Open the curtains and see for yourselves. Men and women can all see. This is an amazing miracle.” The curtains were removed. Everyone came to do the Darshan of the area. There were only sheets on the Asana. They all shouted: “Jai Guru Nanak Dev ji. You are the Giver of joy and Mukti, Gobind.” They all said his name and bowed. They were all amazed at the miracle. They were surprised and wondered where he went.
Half of the sheet was taken by the Turks and the other half was taken by the Hindus. The conflict was over. Both sides were happy. The Sikhs took the sheet and cremated it on the sandalwood pyre. Where Guru ji had instructed, the pyre was lit there by Baba Sri Chand ji. The Pathaans took half of the sheet and buried it in a grave. Both places are present today. In this way, the conflict ended. Both sides were happy.
Guru ji lived for 70 years, 5 months and 7 days. He was the King for this long on Earth. It was 1596 Vikram (1539 CE), Asoo Vadhi 10 when he departed for Sach Khand. I have only stated a little bit of the Katha of Sri Guru ji. I don’t have the power to say it all. As much as my wisdom was capable, I have written the Katha. It is the Katha that destroys the vices of the listeners. Yog, Vairagya, Bhagti and Gyaan is in this Katha. They have been stated in the Katha accordingly. The good virtues, Sat, Santokh, Daya, Such, Dharam, Sach, Udam, Tyaag, Neki, Parupkaar; I have filled the Katha with these. The listeners will have their pains destroyed. The one who reads and listens to this Katha; they will think of these virtues and practice them. They will do Simran. This Katha will show the difference between the infinite and finite. The person will not have joy and sorrow for being born or dying. The importance of the Katha of the Satguru, it is evident in the world. The wise people know this. The wise people keep the praises in their hearts. They don’t forget it. They don’t want to separate from his glory at any time. It gives joy in the two Loks. I didn’t have the power to write this Granth, yet it has been completed by the grace of Satguru ji. The Satguru blessed me. As he gave me the wisdom, so I have written it. I have stated the beautiful Katha as I was blessed. This Katha will give Mukti.
Sri Nanak padh pankaj bandhan. Simro Angad dokh nikandan. Amardas Gur hirday dhyavo. Sri Gur Ramdas Gun Gavon.
Sri Guru Nanak ji, I bow to your lotus feet. I do the Simran of Sri Guru Angad ji, the destroyer of pain. I mediate in my heart of Sri Guru Amardas ji. I sing the virtues of Sri Guru Ramdas ji.
Sri Arjan bighnan ke naashak. Hargobind shub sumat prakaashak. Sri Har Rai namo kar jori. Gur Harkrishan manai bahori.
Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji is the destroyer of obstacles. Sri Guru Hargobind ji illuminates the good wisdom. I bow to Sri Guru Har Rai ji with my hands folded. I (attempt to) please Sri Guru Har Krishan ji, thinking of him.
Tegh Bahadhur param kripala. Sri Gur Gobind Singh Bisala. Dharon dhara par pun pun seesa. Bandhon baar baar jagdeesha.
Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji is the supreme Compassionate One. Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji is the highest of highs. I place my head on the earth to bow to the feet of the Ishwar of the Universe (Guru Granth Sahib ji), over and over again.
My Vidya Guru, was the wisest of the wise. He was always drenched in Simran, Sri Maan Giani Sant Singh ji. I, Kavi Santokh Singh, have received my Vidya (education) from him. I bow to his feet.
The daughter of the sun, Yamuna, destroys the sins and gives Mukti to her servants, who see the Nem. Whoever touches her waters, they become pure. The ones who drink her waters, or bathe in them, the Jumms do not give them pain. Her waters are dark. Her eyes are like lotus flowers. Her master is also dark, Krishan. Her waves wander, playfully. Yamana had deceived death. To drown or float is the same in her. She runs towards the ocean. The Yamuna is radiant.
Sri Yamuna gives joy. She destroys pain. Bathing in her dark waters gives good wisdom. She is the love of Sri Krishan. Her water is pure (Guru Gobind Singh ji established Paonta Sahib by her shores). She is the daughter of the sun. She destroys the fear of the Jumms. By her shores is the village of Boorhia. The home of the Kavi (Santokh Singh) is located in this village. This Granth has been completed there, which has the beautiful praise of the Guru in it. The places, such as (Nankana Sahib, Panja Sahib) Kartarpur Sahib and Amaritsar Sahib, I have gone there and done a lot of research. I wrote a lot of the Katha after going there. I collected the Katha and listened to the elders say the Kathas and wrote it. I took all of the writings (Janamsakhi Bhai Bala ji, Janamsakhi Bhai Mani Singh ji, Janamsakhi Mehervan etc.) and took out the butter from the lassi. I made the beautiful Katha in this way that was joyful to the Sikhs. Where I may have made a mistake, please do not get angry reading it. Please be compassionate and fix it yourselves as the Gursikhs wish. The elders don’t get angry at the kids playing. The kids speak unorthodox words and the elders don’t mind. Kids can’t speak well but the elders don’t get angry at them. See me as small and bless me. The elders forgive the small. The unwise people like to fight and there can’t be a solution with them. I wish for the gift of Gursikhi by which I may be blessed. May my desires all die away. I wish to be at peace and achieve the highest status. 1880 Vikram, on the Pooranmaashi of Kathak, this Granth was completed. My father is Baba Deva Singh ji. My name is Kavi Santokh Singh. I ask for the boon of Satsangat. I bow to the Satguru.
I have no virtues. I am filled with vices. I have long list of issues with lust and anger. The vices had pulverized my mind and my wisdom was depressed because of this. I didn’t see a solution for this but when I came to the shelter of the complete Guru, Guru Nanak Dev ji, he held my arm and made my pains go away. He took me to the shore. He is the keeper of the honour of whoever comes to his shelter. He purifies the sinners. He keeps his promise. Whoever bows to him, he cuts their bonds. He takes love and gives faith and joy to the Sikhs. He is the bridge of joy. He takes the love from the heart and gives spiritual strength to the Sikhs. He makes the virtue-less into full of virtues. He takes small gifts and releases the Sikhs from the Jumms. Satguru Nanak ji is the home of compassion. He takes the ego and gives the Sikhs “Ahung Brahm,” – “I am Brahm,” in their hearts. He takes the mind in his feet and gives Mukti to the Sikhs.
It was on this day, March 16, 2025 CE, that I, Jaswinder Singh, have completed the translations of the Sri Guru Nanak Prakash Granth in English in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. I am in no way, compared to Kavi Santokh Singh ji. By the grace of my Vidya Guru, Sant Giani Sher Singh ji, I have come to understand a grain of the faith that Kavi Santokh Singh ji has in his heart for Satguru Nanak Dev ji. My father is Sardar Kanwaldeep Singh and my mother is Sardarni Harvinder Kaur. My wife Sardarni Gagandeep Kaur and my children: Jeet Kaur, Ajai Singh and Partap Singh have played an integral role in my writing of these translations, as I wrote these for them. I have made many mistakes in translating the Katha that Gurudev, Sant Giani Sher Singh ji has done. I ask the Sangat to forgive me and give me the exact same boon that Kavi ji has asked above. I wish to continue translating the rest of the Katha of the 10 Kings. I can only do that by the Grace of the Satguru and by the Ardaas of the Sikh Sangat.
Thus ends the Uttaraardh and the Sri Guru Nanak Prakash Granth.
