2-46 Wisdom/ Bhai Bhudda/ Bhai Bala ji goes to Sach Khand

Oh mind, why are you getting caught up in the traps of the world?  These worldly issues are of no use to you.  Serve the Lotus feet of the Satguru.  You will be in everlasting bliss.

Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..

Listen oh Light of the Tehans, the Prabhoo sat in Kartarpur.  One day he was sitting under a tree in his fields.  He sat casually, doing the Simran of the Prabhoo.  A child came with his goats.  It was time for the child’s great fortune to awaken.  Guru ji saw the child and said: “Bala, go and bring the child here.”  I went to where the child was tending his goats.  I said to the child: “child, the Tappa ji is calling you.  He wants to speak to you.  Come first then you can go back to your goats.”  The child came with me.  When he did Guru ji’s Darshan, the child was really happy.  He bowed to Guru ji’s lotus feet.  He then stood up in front with his hands folded.  Guru ji casted his divine vision on the boy.  Guru ji then said: “child, what is your name?  In which village is your home?  Who are your parents?  Are these your animals that you are tending or someone else’s?”  The child heard this and said: “my home is near your village.  My name is Boora Randhawa.  We are Jatts.  By the command of my parents, I tend my own animals and some of my neighbours.”  Guru ji said: “alright, go and tend to your animals.  Go and do your work.”  The boy said: “I am confused.  You first called me over and now you told me to go.  You didn’t ask me to do anything.  You told me to go now.  If you had no work with me then why did you command me to come?”  Sri Guru ji smiled and said: “I called you to me.  What was wrong with that?  Meeting and conversing with others, you know who is yours and who is not yours.  We can tell what is the other person’s wisdom and awareness by talking to them.”  Boora bowed and left but his mind fell into a deep love with Guru ji.  His love kept growing deeper.  He tended his animals till evening and then went home.  He spent the night in a deep attraction towards the Guru’s Darshan.

Listen Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, I asked Guru ji: “this child that you called to you, you spoke to him.  Tell me who he was and why did you call him to you?  Tell me everything.”  The Prabhoo said: “this child is really wise.  The wisest.  He is a really pure soul.  The purest.  He will be a complete saint in a few days.  He will be the great home of Sikhi.  His mind will not even touch the vices.  He is pure beyond comprehension.  He will be the highest Brahmgyaani.  He will be Jeevan Mukat.  He will be able to give others Mukti by his words.  He will save many.”  I said to Guru ji: “if he will be as you say, why was he so confused?”  Guru ji said: “his Bhagti is complete but the Gyaan hasn’t illuminated in his mind yet.  When the lotus blooms, his fragrance will spread in the world.  He will be the master of the Divine vision.”  I asked Guru ji: “when will the Gyaan be illuminated in him?  Tell me, oh Giver of Joy.”  Guru ji said: “it was just this long.  I just needed to see him and talk to him.  He just needed my Darshan.  Watch his radiance tomorrow.  Watch is grandeur tomorrow.  The locks of attachment will break for him.  All of the doors of doubt will break.  He has been my Bhagat for millions of lives now.  It is his time to be one with the One.”

In the morning, Boora woke up.  He only dreamt of the Guru all night long.  His mother had churned butter.  Bhai Boora ji took the butter and placed it in a bowl.  He took the bowl without telling his parents.  He slipped away and came to where Prabhoo ji was.  Boora ran to Kartarpur.  He met the Muktidata.  He placed the butter in front of Guru ji.  He bowed and sat near Guru ji.  Guru ji smiled and said: “why did you bring the butter?”  The child said: “listen Tappa ji, I brought it for you.  This ghee is from my home.  I have heard that one should not do the Darshan of saints empty-handed.  I wanted to come to you and bring you a gift.”  Guru ji said: “child, you are young.  You decided to bring the butter here.  The trap of the home is great.  The one who gets trapped in it cannot come out.  It is difficult, like a fish caught in a net.”  The child said: “my mother, father and home, I see them all as you.  I brought butter here for you.  I woke up in the morning with a new eagerness to see you again.  I didn’t tell anyone before coming here.”  Guru ji said: “oh child, you stole the ghee from your parents.  When you go back home, they will beat you in anger.  I will not take this butter.  Take this back home.  Don’t worry, I have received your gift, what you brought.  I am happy with the love in your heart.”  Bhai Boora ji began to cry.  Vairagya and love awoke in his heart.  He said: “I don’t know if my mother or father will beat me but you are beating me now.”  Sri Guru ji said: “I didn’t say anything harsh to you.  I wanted good for you.  I didn’t beat you.  Why are you crying?”  Bhai Boora ji said: “listen Prabhoo ji, the beating that you gave me, there is no other beating harsher than not accepting a gift.  You lit the Deeva and now you are blowing it out.  It is good for you to make my light brighter.  Put more love oil in it to make it brighter.  Destroy the darkness inside me.  Show me the real thing, my Aatma.  Fulfill my wish.  Cut my pain.”  The Gunkhaani smiled and spoke: “Bhudda, you speak like elders form your mouth.”  From that point on, the boy was known as “Bhai Bhudda ji.”  He came to the shelter of the home of Joy.  The Guru was compassionate with him.  Guru ji said: “oh child with great love, bow before the Kartaar.  The wish of your heart will be fulfilled.  You will receive the Gyaan of everlasting bliss.”  Bhai Bhudda ji folded his hands and bowed to the Lotus feet of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji.  As soon as his head touched the feet of Guru ji, the Gyaan illuminated.  The duality and doubts of his body were all destroyed.  His heart was pure.  Guru ji then said to Bhai Bhudda ji: “wake up at 2 am everyday and bathe.  Do the Simran of the Naam.  Accept the will of the Parmeshwar.”  The boy folded his hands and said: “do I still need to bathe?  (I am not the body anymore) You destroyed the filth of “me” inside of me.  I am a sacrifice unto your Darshan.  I will never be touched by this filth ever again.  The pain of being born or dying again has been cut for me.  I have met my pure and Sahij form.  By knowing this, the everlasting beautiful bliss was illuminated.”  Guru ji said: “you will bless many people.  They will meet you and receive the ultimate Bibek (of seeing their true Aatma) from you.  They will see your ways and follow what you do (if you don’t bathe, people won’t either).  They will become eager seeing you and became saints as well (when they see you bathing, reciting Gurbani and doing Simran).”  In this way Bhai Bhudda ji was blessed.  He remained sitting there and did not go home.

Bhai Bhudda ji’s parents came looking for him.  They came to Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji’s Dhera.  When they saw their child, by the Guru’s words, the boy had become a “Bhudda.”  When the parents saw his state, they noticed that he was not of this world anymore.  He was of no use to them as he didn’t see his body or this world anymore.  His parents went back home.  In this way, Bhai Bhudda ji remained with Satguru ji.  He served the Lotus feet of Satguru ji.  He never had any desire in his mind.  His mind was one and still in the Satsangat.  He spent some time like this.

Listen Sri Guru Angad Dev ji to the history.  One day, I went to Mata Sulakhani ji to bow to her.  I casually sat by her.  She said to me: “let Tappa ji stay here now.  He has travelled a lot.  He went to many lands with you.  You stayed with him for a long time.  When you come, he takes you and travels.  He spends a long time when he goes.  Leave him with us now.  He doesn’t go anywhere without you.”  I heard this and thought to my self: “from her point of view, she said the right thing.  He did a lot of Udaasis.  It’s good that Guru ji stays with them now.”  I obeyed her.  I went to Guru Prabhoo ji and folded my hands.  I said: “please tell us who will sit on your throne after you?  Who will you give the Gurta Ghaddi to?  Will you give it to Baba Sri Chand ji or Baba Lakhmi Das ji?  Or will it be someone else, oh Giver of Joy?  Tell me from your mouth; who will be the Guru of the world?”  Guru ji said: “after me, there will be a Khatri of the Trehan clan.  His name will be “Lehna” and then it will be “Sri Guru Angad Dev ji.”  I will take on a new form within him.  Bhagti and Love will spread.  Nobody will be able to see the difference between the two of us.  Such will be my second form.”  I heard this and bowed with my hands folded.  I bowed to his Lotus Feet and said: “Prabhoo ji, give me permission to go back to Talwandi.  I will live there now.  When it will be your blessing, I will come to you.  I will have your Darshan when you wish it.  Remember me, seeing me as your servant.  Please forgive my mistakes, my actions and my words.”  Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “oh beloved, you are always connected to me.  You are my companion in this world and in the Parlok.  You have always obeyed me and always will.  The body meets and separates but the minds never separate.  You will always be remembered in my heart.  Why would I ever forget my greatest friend?”  I heard this and bowed.  I left after receiving permission.  I came to Talwandi then.  Day and night I kept the form of Guru ji in my attention.  I have never taken my focus off of his form even for a second.  My heart has been in a deep bliss all the time.  Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, oh great Guru ji, whatever awareness I had in my heart, I was able to say the Katha.  I said the Katha as you commanded.  I lived in Talwandi after that and always focused on Guru Nanak Dev ji.  When I heard that Guru ji took on a second form, I wanted to see you again.  I quickly came to your presence.  I did your Darshan again, oh Light of the Trehans.  You are the same as Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji!  My faith is solid.  I believe this.  You had your own Katha written.  You saw me as your servant and wanted to give me the greatness.  You know everything oh Omniscient One.  You speak of the 3 states of time.”

When Sri Guru Angad Dev ji heard this Katha, Bhai Paira Mokha ji wrote it all down.  Guru Angad Dev ji was really happy.  He said: “listen Bala ji, you are like the Sri Guru ji.  You are Dhan, Dhan!  Your life is Dhan!  Your face is like the full moon.  Your words are Amrit, as it drops from the moon.  The Sikhs will drink this Amrit.  They will not be satiated by drinking this Amrit Katha.  The greatness of this Katha cannot be praised to its fullest.  Whoever listens to this Katha will receive the 4 Padarthas (Dharma, Arth, Kaam and Moksha).  Nothing will be impossible for that listener.  It will be like someone having the Paras (philosopher’s stone).  They will never be in shortage.  You have done a great thing for the world, Bhai Bala ji.  There is nothing greater than this.  Sikhs will read and listen to this Katha.  They will have the love for Sri Guru ji, hearing this Katha.  The reward for listening to this Katha, the sins will run away.  Having faith will calm the mind.  The faith for Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji’s lotus feet will grow.  The ones who hear this Katha, they will receive the gift of Mukti.”  Bhai Bala ji folded his hands and said: “listen oh Master: whatever history I saw or heard, I have said it all to you.  I don’t know anything else beyond this.  You already know everything.  My body has been grabbed by old age.  I am very old now.  Please give your command so I may leave this body.  I wish to leave my body at your feet and be saved from the world.”  Sri Guru Angad Dev ji smiled and said: “why are you in such a hurry?  You still have 2 months of age left.  Your body will become ash then.  Stay with me till then.  Continue to tell me the Katha of Guru ji.”  Bhai Bala ji was happy to hear this.  He stayed with Guru Angad Dev ji then.  He would speak about Guru Nanak Dev ji with Guru Angad Dev ji, of whatever he could remember.

After 2 months, Bhai Bala ji’s age finished.  His time came.  He bowed to Sri Guru Angad Dev ji and thought of him.  He made the ground pure at Sri Tapyana Sahib in Sri Khadoor Sahib.  He thought of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji.  He laid down and took a cloth over his body.  He received the highest status, being very fortunate.  He received the highest status, not achievable by the strongest Rishis and Munis.  Bhai Bala ji’s light immersed into Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, like water meeting water.  At that time, the king of the Trehans had a pyre prepared.  He had the Sikhs place the body of Bhai Bala ji on top of the pyre.  Guru ji came close and lit the pyre himself.  The Sikhs tried to stop him but Guru Angad Dev ji wanted to light the pyre himself.  The beloved servants of the Guru cannot be seen as different from them.  After lighting the pyre, Guru ji sat with the Sangat and praised Bhai Bala ji.  Everyone said: “he was Dhan Dhan!  He was the beloved Sikh of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji.”  Bhai Bala ji’s final resting place is at Sri Tapyana Sahib in Sri Khadoor Sahib.

2-47 Meeting Sri Param Paavan Lehna ji

The Simran of Sarasvati is like the ocean which gave the moon of poetry (referencing the churning of the ocean by the Devatas and the Daynts, giving the moon).  Hearing this poetry, the listeners bloom like the Kamudhani.  The Chakvi and Chakva are in pain, seeing the moon, just as the slanderers are in pain hearing this Katha.

Now the Katha of Sri Guru Angad Dev ji will begin.  I (Kavi Santokh Singh) will state it as it happened.  In the area of Jungle (Malwa), there was a place called Mattay di Saran (also known as Mattay Naangay di Saran).  A pure-hearted person named Baba Pheroo ji lived there.  He was a Kshatriya of the Trehan family (the descendants of Shatrugun, the brother of Ram Chander ji).  He was known for his Dharma and Karma.  He had a son who was joyful.  His son was named “Lehna,” with love.  Bhai Lehna ji was a Bhagat from birth.  He had brought his Bhagti with him.  It was Prema Bhagti in human form.  He was filled with patience and forgiveness, as two 2 arms of Bhagti.  To tolerate the intolerable, to contain the immense power, he had that ability.  He was very friendly and would be happy to see the success of others.  These were his legs.  Compassion towards all was his back.  Love was the mind.  Sam and Dam (to control the mind and Indriyas), these were the ears of Bhagti.  To focus his attention, these were the eyes of Bhagti.  Gyaan was the radiant head.  The Satsangat was the jewellery of Bhagti.  He took a birth in this way.

As time passed, Baba Lehna ji grew.  When he was 14-years-old, his mind had not touched any vice or desire.  There was a Khatri named Devi Chand ji who lived in Khadoor.  He had a daughter, named Mata Khivi ji.  Devi Chand ji sent a person to propose the marriage.  The engagement and the marriage were done.  The dowry was given.  He was happy to see his new son-in-law.  Baba Lehna ji brought his new bride back to Mattay di Saran.  They stayed there for a long time.

One day, Balochi Dacoits attacked and destroyed the village of Mattay di Saran.  They destroyed all of the homes and flattened the village.  They didn’t let anyone else live there.  Sri Lehna ji left his village and came to Khadoor to live with his family.  He didn’t go anywhere else after that.  He spent a lot of time there.  The men and women of Khadoor were the servants of Durga.  They would go to the Jvala Mandir in Kangar every year.  Bhai Lehna ji’s father-in-law would take a group of people to Kangar to do the Pooja of Durga with joy.  Baba Lehna ji would lead the group.  He did this every year.  There was a Sikh of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, named Bhai Jodh ji who lived in Khadoor with love.  He didn’t go to the pilgrimage to the Sri Jvala Mandir.  He recited Gurbani all the time.  He didn’t serve anyone else.  He had a deep faith in the feet of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji.  He lived in the bliss of Prema Bhagti, the Premanand.  One day, he sang Bani with his full focus.  He sang it with love.  When Sri Baba Lehna ji heard the Shabad, love arose in his heart.  Baba Lehna ji called the Sikh over and said: “the Shabad you just recited, who composed it?”  Bhai Jodh ji said: “this is my Guru’s, Guru Nanak Dev ji’s.  I am his student.  I read his Bani.”  Bhai Lehna ji thought to himself: “how would such a person’s Darshan be whose words are so sweet?  I will make him my Guru as well.  I feel peace hearing his words.  I have heard of his praises before.  Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is the Gyaan who blesses.  His Sikhs aren’t here.  Nobody does his Darshan from here.  There is no one else I can do Sangat with here.  I would go with someone else.  This Shabad that this Sikh read, my heart has love now.  I wish to do the Guru’s Darshan.”  It was the time to go to the Sri Jvala Mandir.  Bhai Lehna ji thought to himself: “I will take everyone to Kartarpur before going to Kangar.  They can all do his Darshan.”  Bhai Lehna ji memorized the Shabad from Bhai Jodh ji.  He recited it everyday with love.  The love arose in his heart.  His wish to meet Guru Nanak Dev ji grew.  It was like a bee looking for a flower in the morning; like a thirsty deer looking for water; like a Chatrik looking for the Swanti drop.

The time for going to the Devi’s temple came.  Everyone prepared to go.  Many joined Baba Lehna ji and set off to Jvala Mandir with eagerness.  Baba Lehna ji said to everyone: “we will take another route.  Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is a great being.  Oh wise ones, we will do his Darshan first.  We will take that fruitful route.  We will have Darshan of both places.”  Many heard this and set off.  They said: “let’s go and we will do his Darshan.”  A great crowd started off.  The fortunate Bhai Lehna ji started off.  They walked slowly and reached Kartarpur.  They asked a person outside of the village: “whose village is this?”  The person said: “the Guru of the world, the Giver of Mukti, Sri Guru Nanak Tappa ji.  Many people from faraway lands come here.  They do his Darshan and have their wishes fulfilled.  He is famous for giving his wisdom of the Naam.  This is his village.”  The people in Bhai Lehna ji’s group heard this and said: “whose Shabads you always read, whom you wish to meet, that Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji lives here.”  Baba Lehna ji was really happy.  The happiness couldn’t be contained in his body.  If was like a cheap person getting money.  He came to the front and folded his hands.  He said to all: “all of you wait here.  I will do his Darshan and come back.  We will then set up a Dhera.  We will then go on ahead.  If you wish to go on ahead, you can.”  Baba Lehna ji turned towards the village.  He folded his hands and entered the village with great eagerness, leaving his group behind.  He rode his horse into the village.

Guru Nanak Dev ji, the home of all the minds, sensed Bhai Lehna ji coming.  He thought to himself: “my servant is coming.  The successor of my kingdom has come.”  Guru ji got up from his seat and came towards the Ravi, seeing a nice place.  He stood there, leaving his Sangat behind.  He was standing near the entrance of the village, all alone.  He wanted to see his beloved Bhai Lehna ji.  Bhai Lehna ji saw Guru ji, not knowing who he was and said: “Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, the Gunkhaani, I wish to have his Darshan.  Where is his place?”  Sri Prabhoo ji heard this and said: “come with me.  I will show you Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, whom you ask for with love.”  Sri Guru ji walked ahead and Bhai Lehna ji, who was on his horse, followed behind.  When they came to the Dharamsala, Guru ji stood and spoke with love: “you can get off your mare now.  Tie it to the wooden pole.  The door you see, go inside and have his Darshan.”  Guru ji spoke sweet words and went on ahead.  He went in through the smaller door inside of the Dharamsala.  Guru ji sat on his Singhasan again.  He sat like Peace sitting in a body.

Bhai Lehna ji tied his horse and entered the Dharamsala.  He saw Guru Nanak Dev ji sitting ahead.  He said: “I come to your shelter!”  His mind was drenched in faith.  As he looked up, he saw Guru ji’s face and realized it was the same person who led him to the Dharamsala.  He was surprised to see this.  He felt as though he made a big mistake.  He was upset at his doing: “if I had known, I would have gotten off my horse and bowed to him.  Why was I on my horse?”  He became still and didn’t say anything.  He thought to himself: “I made a big mistake.”  He kept his eyes low out of guilt.  He thought: “I am unfortunate who came on his horse.  He walked on the ground.  How can I be forgiven?”  Bhai Lehna ji thought and Guru Nanak Dev ji knew everything.  He was compassionate and said: “Purkha, are you well?”  Baba Lehna ji said: “your Darshan gives Parmanand.  I received the cloud of peace.”  Bhai Lehna ji was wearing clothes that were meant to be worn by the Bhagats of the Devi.  He wanted to take off the regalia he was wearing in preparation to attend the Jvala Mandir.  He had bells around his feet.  He broke them right away.  He let go of his wishes of going to Kangar.  He wanted to remain in the shelter of Guru Nanak Dev ji.  He thought in his heart: “if he is omniscient, he should give me leave.  He should give me permission to go.  I will come with love and faith and do his Darshan.”  As he thought about going home, the Gunkhaani spoke: “Purkha, the place you were going to, you took off the costume.  Will you still go there?”  Bhai Lehna ji said with his hands folded: “listen Prabhoo ji, if someone leaves their home to look for honey and finds Amrit on the way, why would he look for honey then?”  Prabhoo ji smiled and said: “Purkha, where is your home?  What is your name?  Tell me your name.”  Bhai Lehna ji was in peace.  He spoke: “oh Satguru, you are the forgiver.  My home is in Khadoor.  My name is Lehna.  I heard of your glories.  I wished to have your Darshan for many days now.  You pulled my mind to you.  I smelled the fragrance of your glory.  I came to you like a bee.”  Sri Guru ji said: “you are Lehna, and so you will take.  Purkha, I have something to give you.  Go now.  Go to your home.”  Bhai Lehna ji was really happy to hear this.  It was like an ill person cured; like somebody getting a sweet mango.  He thought to himself: “Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is omniscient.  What I was thinking, he knew it.  He is my master.”  He obeyed and bowed with his hands folded.  He took leave and came back.

Bhai Lehna ji came back to his group and said: “my Ram Ram to all.  I wish to go back home now.”  The group was surprised to hear this.  They said: “why are you going home?  Are you not going to the Jvala Mandir now?  You are our leader.”  Bhai Lehna ji said: “the reason why I was going to Jvala Mandir, that was fulfilled here.  My mind is now still and at peace.”  The group asked with love: “you received peace here but what about the people that came with you?  What will happen to them without you?”  Bhai Lehan ji said: “you can go to Jvala Mandir.  Go there and then come here to Kartarpur.  Whatever wishes you have, your wishes will be fulfilled with the Guru’s Darshan.  He will bless you.  He will fulfill your wishes.”  Bhai Lehna ji gave leave to the group who went to the Jvala Devi Mandir.

Bhai Lehna ji came back to Khadoor and didn’t say anything to anyone.  His focus was set in Guru ji.  It grew.  The people of Khadoor came to Bhai Lehna ji and asked: “you were going to the Jvala Mandir to see her feet.  Why did you come back?  Tell us what happened to you?”  Bhai Lehna ji said: “I am not going now.  I gave leave to my group and came home.”  The people heard this and went quiet.  They didn’t know what happened.  Bhai Lehna ji sat in his home and didn’t say anything to anyone.  He was depressed though.  After one night in his home, he suffered like a fish without water as he longed for the Darshan of the Guru.  In the morning, he took 1.25 Maunds of salt and packed it up.  His sister’s son came to meet Bhai Lehna ji.  Bhai Lehna ji said to his nephew: “help me lift this sack of salt and put it on my head.”  The nephew said: “Mammaji, many people listen to you here.  You can ask anyone to take it to where you want to take it.  If you don’t want to ask anyone then put it on my head.  I’ll go with you to where you want to take it.  Don’t lift it on your head.  It is not right for you.”  Bhai Lehna ji said: “listen, If someone wants something and you are offered it, would you take it or not?  Would you take it yourself or get someone else to take it?  Understand this, I am going to get something so raise this salt on my head quickly.”  Bhai Lehna ji picked up the salt and came out of Khadoor.  He set off towards Kartarpur and didn’t say anything to anyone.

Bhai Lehna ji walked to Kartarpur and came to the home of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji.  Guru ji was gone to his fields.  The Flag of the Bedis was among the rice crops.  Bhai Lehna ji set the salt with Mata Sulakhani ji and said: “tell me where Guru ji went?”  Mata Sulakhani ji saw the young man wearing an expensive white Kurta, white Chadra and white Dastaar.  She said: “son, who are you and why are you asking?  Where are you from?  What did you bring?  What work do you have with Guru ji?”  Mata ji, this is salt for the Langar.  I came to make Guru ji my Guru.  I came to give this.  This is for the Gareeb Nivaaj.  Please keep it here.  Please tell me where Guru ji is.”  Hearing the words, Mata ji kept the salt in the kitchen.  Mata ji said: “son, where the rice fields are, Guru ji is sitting there and getting the people to work.”

Bhai Lehna ji walked towards Guru ji.  He saw Guru ji from a distance and was happy.  He quickly worked through the mud and bowed to Guru ji’s feet.  He placed his head on Guru ji’s feet.  Guru ji said: “may you always remember the Kartaar.”  Guru ji placed his hand on Bhai Lehna ji’s head.  He blessed him.  He looked at him with blessings.  He saw his deep faith.  Bhai Lehna ji had given his body, mind and all his belonging to Guru ji.  The crown of the Trehans had given everything to Guru ji.  He gave his body and mind.  He had no work with his family or belongings anymore.  He obeyed Guru ji.  This was his wish.  He had no desire, lust, anger or ego.  He didn’t see his body as his own.  He saw everything of his as belonging to the Guru.  He focused on Guru ji’s feet with love in his heart.  All of the servants were working in the fields.  They were taking out the grass among the rice crops.  Bhai Lehna ji said: “can I have a sickle?  I will work with the other servants.  My body will be a success then.”  Bhai Lehna ji took a sickle and began cutting the grass.  He worked where the other servants worked.  He worked for a half hour and then Prabhoo ji said: “you won’t be able to do this.  You pulled the crops up.  Come out.  I will give you other work to do.  Pick up the crops that are harvested and take them to the home.”  Bhai Lehna ji quickly came out and tied the grass up.  Mud and water dripped from out of the grass that Bhai Lehna ji picked up.  Guru ji helped Bhai Lehna ji pick up the grass on his head.  The shirt that Bhai Lehna ji was wearing was very expensive.  The shirt had become dirty with mud but he didn’t care.  He took the grass and came to the home where the animals were.  He put the grass in front of the animal.  Mata Sulakhani ji was surprised to see this.  She knew Guru ji’s ways were interesting.  She thought to herself: “his head and clothes are dirty with mud.  The nice person came with love.  He came for his Darshan and he has been disrespected.  He came from afar with love.”

It was evening and Guru ji came home with his servants.  Mata Sulakhani ji said to Guru ji: “the well to do people that come to see you, you disrespect them.  The person that came is from a high class. He was wearing an expensive shirt.  You made him carry a muddy pack of grass.  You made him dirty.”  Guru ji heard this and said: “it wasn’t filled with mud.  I gave him the canopy of the kingdom of this world and Parlok.  There is nobody else like him.  You see it as mud but it is actually saffron, that I put on him.  He is standing nearby.  Look at him now.”  When Mata ji saw Bhai Lehna ji, she saw Bhai Lehna ji’s body filled with saffron.  Guru ji said: “did you see it?”  Mata ji folded her hands and said: “yes I can see it!  Your ways are great and can’t be known.”  Guru ji said: “the people sinking in this world, he will be the ferrymen for all those people.  He will help them across.”  Mata Sulakhani ji went quiet after hearing this.  Bhai Lehna ji was really happy.

2-48 The Seva of Sri Lehna ji/ Love/ Maya/ Sang Tarna/ The Devatas come to Bow/ Shepherd/ Khadoor

The great name of Sri Sarasvati is the great root.  The poem is the stem.  The stem sprouts in many ways, efforts and processes to give fruits and flowers.

For many days, Bhai Lehna ji did Seva.  His love grew by the Seva.  The people that had went to Sri Jvala Mandir, they came to Kartarpur with eagerness.  They sent a messenger to call Bhai Lehna ji to them.  Upon meeting Bhai Lehna ji, they said: “we would like to do the Darshan of the Guru.”  Bhai Lehna ji brought everyone to the Dharamsala.  Bhai Lehna ji folded his hands and said: “please listen to my request Sri Gunkhaani: many people from my village have come to do your Darshan.”  Guru ji casted his divine vision and said: “bring your people here.”  Having received the permission, many men and women came into the Dharamsala.  Whatever wish the people had, their wishes were fulfilled.  The Gunkhaani sat on top of the Singhasan.  The people did Guru ji’s Darshan with their minds as well as their bodies.  They offered fruits and flowers.  They said: “Dhan Guru ji!”  The stood and did an Ardaas: “seeing you, our life is a success.”  Whatever wish they had, Guru ji fulfilled it.  They all stayed for 1 night in Kartarpur.  They left the next day.  Bhai Lehna ji remained and did Seva of Guru ji.  He did any Seva with eagerness.  He washed dirty dishes, massaged Guru ji’s feet with love, fanned the Sangat in the heat, broomed the home of Guru ji, washed Guru ji’s clothes and any other Seva he could find.  He spent day and night in Seva.  He would always keep looking at Guru ji’s face, waiting for his commands.  When Guru ji would give him a task to do, Bhai Lehna ji would complete the task, right away.  His mind was pure and simple.  His mind was drenched in faith, further, by the day.  The world was fading away for him.  All he thought of was, was Guru ji.  He gave his mind to the feet of the Satguru.  His love could not be compared to anything else in this world.  No relation could compare to this.  The moth loves the flame; the deer loves the sound of the horn; the bee loves the lotus; the fish loves the water.  The love of Bhai Lehna ji and Guru ji was above all this.  Bhai Lehna ji was ready to decapitate his head for Guru ji.  He would not hesitate even for a moment.

One day, the King of the Bedis was laying down on his bed.  Sri Maya ji came into a human form and came to do the Darshan of Satguru ji.  It was a beautiful form.  Her eyes were beautiful like the lotus.  She wore gold and diamond jewellery, which clanked by her movement.  She wore bright red coloured clothes.  She came to massage Guru Nanak Dev ji’s feet.  She did his Seva with love and devotion.  Bhai Lehna ji came to fan Guru ji with love in his heart.  He saw the beautiful women but was surprised as to who she was.  He was shy to say anything at the time.  When Sri Laxmi ji left, Bhai Lehna ji folded his hands and asked Guru ji: “who was this divine form?  She was beautiful and radiant.  She did the Seva of your feet with love.  She bowed to you before leaving.  I could see her.  Nobody else knows her or could see her.  I was amazed to see her.  She can’t be from this earth.”  The Home of the Bedis spoke to tell him to clear the confusion: “Sri Kartaar ji is compassionate with you.  That’s why you were able to see her.  (You are able to see Maya as different from you.  Therefore, you will also see the Parmeshwar soon) Nobody else can see her.  Nobody can see her end.  The whole universe is her form.  Everyone is illusioned by her.  She came for this reason.  I keep her 12 Kos away from me.  She wants to cast her illusion on me but she can’t.  She wants to stay here but I don’t let her in.  Achieving her, one walks the wrong path.  She comes to do my Seva for this reason.  She wants to stay with me forever.  When I take on a second form, she will stay 6 Kos away.  In my third form, she will stand at the door.  She will do Seva and impress in every way.  In my fourth form, she will enter from the 4 doors.”  In this way, Guru ji explained the event to Bhai Lehna ji.  Bhai Lehna ji was happy to hear this.  He did Seva with love in his heart.  He had no type of ego.  Not even a little bit.

Many days passed.  Bhai Lehna ji continued to do the Seva.  One day, in the Dharamsala, a beautiful bed was laid out for Guru ji.  Guru ji laid on that bed and Bhai Lehna ji fanned Guru ji.  Guru ji’s feet were moving.  There was nothing near his feet.  Seeing this, Bhai Lehna ji was surprised.  He folded his hands and said: “why are your feet moving?  They are moving by themselves, as though something is moving them.  I don’t see anyone close to you that may be touching them.”  Guru ji said: “you are my deepest beloved.  I will tell you what is happening.  The Devatas and Devis are all here to touch my feet.  They are bowing, one by one.  They come to meet me sometimes.  They come hidden.  They are leaving now.”  Bhai Lehan ji said: “true are your words.  You are the true Prabhoo.”  Bhai Lehna ji bowed to Guru ji’s feet.  The deep love arose in his heart.  He was coloured in Bhagti.  He recited Gurbani with the deepest focus.  He listened to Keertan with his heart.  He did the Simran of Vahiguru.  He chanted the praises all the time.  The way of love was indescribable.  He was focused in love.  He spent time doing Seva.  The ways of the world did not come to his mind.  He spent many days like this.  He was a bee to the lotus feet of Guru ji.

One day Guru ji was sitting.  Bhai Lehna ji was massaging his feet.  He saw scratches on Guru ji’s heels with blood along with thorns.  He folded his hands and asked: “how did these thorns come into your feet, oh Giver of Mukti?  You didn’t go to such a thorny place oh Prabhoo, not in front of me.  I can see that there are thorns in your feet.  Please tell me what this is.”  Sri Guru ji said: “a shepherd who is tending his flock, his mind is focused.  He is filled with love and reciting Bani.  He read the Sohila today.  He was walking among a thorny area while being drenched in love, reading Bani.  I went close to him behind him to hear him recite the Bani with love.  I am not letting the thorns touch his feet.  That’s why you see the scratches on my feet.  Lehna, believe me.  I speak the truth: whoever recites the Sohila, I am near them, without a doubt.”  After saying this, Guru ji called another Sikh and said to him: “go to this place and call the shepherd who is tending his flock with love.  Go and call him.  Bring him here with respect.  Speak to him with respect.”  The Sikh obeyed and went to the village where the shepherd was tending his goats.  The Sikh said to him: “the Gunkhaani Guru ji is calling for you.”  The shepherd Sikh went with the other Sikh and came to Guru ji.  He came and bowed to Guru ji’s feet.  Guru ji looked at him with a divine vision.  Guru ji said to him: “recite the Sohila when you go to sleep, that you have memorized.”  Guru ji was very happy with the Sikh.  His duality was finished.  The shepherd said: “whatever is your command, I will obey it with love in my heart.  I will do the way of peace.”  The people standing by were really surprised.  They had faith in Guru ji.  They all saw the scratches on Guru ji’s feet and knew why they were there.  Faith was deep in their heart.  They all then understood that Sohila should be read before going to sleep.  They focused on Bani and Guru ji’s form.  The Satguru protects them and destroys problems and pain.

Three years passed.  Bhai Lehna ji did Seva with love.  Guru ji gave Bhai Lehna ji a command to go home to see how his family was.  Bhai Lehna ji could not disobey the Prabhoo.  He bowed to Guru ji’s lotus feet and went home.  He focused on Guru ji’s form.  His focus did not wander as he came to Khadoor.  He came home and met his whole family.  Everyone in the village heard of his arrival: “Lehna has come after a long time.”  Everyone came to meet Bhai Lehna ji, praising him.  Bhai Lehna ji welcomed everyone with respect.  He got up from his bed to meet everyone.  The people hugged Bhai Lehna ji when they met him.  The people noticed that Bhai Lena ji’s personality had become very joyous.  A calm Chaudhary named Takhat Mal lived in Khadoor.  He came and bowed to Bhai Lehna ji.  His mind was drenched in Seva and humility.  The Chaudhary was a good person.  Bhai Lehna ji spoke sweet words to him: “oh wise one, please hug me.  Why did you bow and sit down back there?  Come and meet me.  You are the highest out of all the people.  The people of Khadoor obey you.  You are humble after being so high.  You are counted among the highest beings.  The tree which has fruits, the branches bow downwards towards the ground.”  The Chaudhary folded his hands and said: “you are very calm and very beloved to me.  You spent a long time with the great being and did his great Seva in Kartarpur.  You are a great being as well.  I see that you are worship-worthy.  I can’t hug you anymore.  It is right to do your Seva.  I have thought of this.”  Sri Lehna ji was overjoyed and gave a lot of happiness to the Chaudhary.  He said: “you are elder and great.  May the Satguru take all your pains away.  May you receive all that you wish.  You will get Mukti in Parlok.  You will never be in shortage.”  As soon as Bhai Lehna ji said this, it became true.  The Chaudhary was inspired to do Bhagti.  He was focused in the name of the Satguru.  They both had love for each other and praised the Guru and the Naam.   Takhat Mal Chaudhary was sitting with many other people.  Bhai Lehna ji recited a Shabad with faith:

Soohi Mahalla 1..

Those pots (minds) that are filled with love of the Lord, they are blessed and exalted.

They are blessed with peace, and their pains are forgotten.

There is no doubt in this, He certainly saves them. ||1||

The Guru comes to meet those whose destiny is so pre-ordained.

He blesses them with the Teachings of the Amrit Name of the Lord.

Those who walk in the Will of the Satguru, they never wander (in other life forms). ||2||

The ones who live in the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence (in their own Aatma), why should they bow down to any other?

The gate-keeper at the Lord’s Gate will not stop them to ask any questions.

By His word, they are emancipated, who is blessed with the Sahib’s Glance of Grace. ||3||

The Lord Himself sends out and recalls the mortal beings; no one else gives Him advice.

He Himself demolishes, constructs and creates; He knows everything.

O Nanak, the Naam, the Name of the Lord is the blessing, given to those who receive His Mercy, and His Grace. ||4||3||5||

(SGGS 729)

Takhat Mal and the people bowed after hearing this.  Their minds were drenched in love.  They met and then went to their homes.  Bhai Lehna ji spent some days at home but did not wish to stay there.  He would go in and out of his house.  He had left his mind at the Lotus feet of the Guru.  Only his body had come to his home.  How could his mind be calm?  It was like the Chakor waiting for the full moon.  His eyes were like lotus flowers that were wilting without their beloved sun.  He didn’t speak to anyone and stayed depressed.  He didn’t care to do any work in the house.  He stayed for a few days and then wanted to go to the Complete Guru.  He met everyone with love and started on his way to Kartarpur with eagerness.  The people asked him to stay as he had come after a long time but he spoke nicely to all and left his home.

Bhai Lehna ji arrived in Kartarpur and did Guru ji’s Darshan.  His mind was like the snake who was looking for his Mani and finally found it.  He found his Mani.  He said: “keep me in your shelter!”  he grabbed Guru ji’s feet and bowed like a stick.  Guru ji said: “Purkha, may the Parmeshwar bless you.”  Guru ji had him sit close to him.  He said: “Lehna, you came back so quick.  Why did you not want to stay in your home?”  Bhai Lehna ji said: “you know everything Master.  It is not in my hands anymore.  The kite depends on the string.  The flyer can pull the kite as he wishes.”  He said this and went to doing Guru ji’s Seva again.  He was happy with doing Guru ji’s Darshan.

2-49 Food from the Tree/ Water Tapasya/ Seat of Stones/ Food of Sand and Akk

Sam (controlling the mind), Dham (controlling the Indriyas), Nem, Vairagya (detachment), Yam, compassion, Truth and Contentment; oh mind, be the gardener that tends to these gifts given to you by the Satguru.

Sri Guru ji had the farming done in the fields.  Many Sikhs got together to plough the fields.  A lot of food came from the fields.  Unlimited in fact.  It was used for the Langar.  The crops piled up in great quantities.  The storage rooms were filled with grains and crops harvested from the fields.  The Langar was open to all.  Unlimited food was made.  Langar was distributed from early morning to night.  There was no shortage.  Sangat from far away lands came to do Guru ji’s Darshan.  Brahamachaaris, Bairagis, Gyaanis, Tappis, Ateets, Dighambhers, Dhyanis, Jogis, Pandits, Sanyasis, Hindus, and Turks came to Guru ji.  Kings and paupers who came with wishes, they did Guru ji’s Darshan and had their wishes fulfilled.  They presented gifts but Guru ji did not accept them.  Guru ji’s praises spread everywhere.  It spread like swans wandering from house to house, forgetting their way; like jasmine spreading everywhere.  The moonlight spread to every home of Guru ji’s praises.  The end could not be found.  People would hear the praises and come with eagerness.  They came with love and devotion.  The people from far away lands came in big groups.  They received bliss saying “Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji!”  They chanted his name to praise him.

One time, a lot of Sangat came to Kartarpur.  They came from every direction.  They couldn’t be counted.  Thousands came to Kartarpur.  One couldn’t see the end of the line.  They came with wishes.  Without a doubt their wishes were fulfilled.  They all stayed the night and set up tents all around the village.  The black clouds came at night and rained.  It rained all night and all day.  It didn’t stop for 2 days.  Langar was difficult to make.  The Sangat was anxious without food.  They were all very hungry.  Food couldn’t be made.  There was no break to make the food.  There was water everywhere.  Sri Guru ji was in the Dharamsala.  He sat with a big crowd around him.  Baba Sri Chand ji, Baba Lakhmi Chand ji, servants, Bhai Lehna ji and Baba Bhudda ji along with many people sat with Guru ji, the moon of the Bedis.  Everyone was hungry.  Guru ji knew this.  He could feel their pain.  Guru ji commanded Baba Sri Chand ji: “it has been 3 days since the rain started.  The Sangat is hungry.  Get up son and do the Seva quickly.  Go to the Kikar trees and climb them.  Shake the branches and many types of foods will fall from them.  The Sangat will eat them and satisfy themselves.  When the rain stops, everyone will be happy and go to their homes.”  Baba Sri Chand ji heard this and didn’t have faith in his father’s words.  He said: “who has grown food on the trees?  I’ve never heard this before.  It has never happened like this before, as you say.  Sidhs, Munis and Avatars; they have never spoken words like you have.  You speak unorthodox words.  I don’t want to do that and be embarrassed.”  Guru ji understood that his son did not have faith.  Prabhoo ji asked his second son: “Lakhmi Das, listen to my command, do the work.  Go to the trees and shake them.  Take the Sangat with you.  They will be satiated.  They are hungry.  Keep shaking the tree and come after.”  Baba Lakhmi Das ji responded in the same way as his brother, not obeying his father’s command.  Guru ji saw that both of his sons had no faith in him.  Guru ji decided that the sons were not deserving of the greatness of the Gurta Ghaddi.  Out of all the servants, the highest servant, Bhai Lehna ji, Guru ji said to him: “Lehna, get up and take this from me: take my command quickly.  Take the Sangat with you behind you.  Go on ahead.  Go and shake the Kikar trees.  Give everyone food with love.  Give them what they wish for.”  Bhai Lehna ji didn’t even take his Chadra.  He got up and ran outside of the Dharamsala.  He gathered the Sangat and took them along.

Bhai Lehna ji went to the trees and climbed one of them.  He shook the branches and out fell many types of foods.  Ladoos, Jalabees, Pooras and Pooris fell.  Everyone was amazed to see this.  The hungry people were anxious.  They ate the delicious food.  As Bhai Lehna ji shook the trees, more food fell from the trees.  The Sangat watched this miracle and ate in joy.  They shared the various types of food that fell from the trees.  The food could not be seen on the trees but everyone saw it falling.  Nobody could figure out what was happening.  They all said: “Dhan Guru Nanak Dev ji!”  The Sangat was hungry for 3 days.  There was no time to cook or eat.  The food was really delicious so the Sangat ate a lot with joy.  They ate for a long time, till their hearts’ content.  When they were full, they said: “come down now.  We are good.”  Bhai Lehna ji stopped when the Sangat was full.  He came down from the tree.  Thousands of people ate food from the trees.  24,000 people ate.  They were all satiated and happy.  Bhai Lehna ji and the Sangat came back to the Dharamsala.  They all bowed to Guru ji like a stick.  Bhai Lehna ji bowed like a stick with humility.  As he touched Guru ji’s feet, some power came into Bhai Lehna ji, like the morning red of sunrise.  The Sangat all came and bowed to Guru ji as well.  They had the faith which gave them bliss.  They all sat and spoke in amazement.  They were all surprised.  They didn’t understand what happened.  They said: “this has never happened before.  Never has food fallen from trees with the words of any other Avatar.”  They saw Guru ji as the most powerful.  Many people came to meet Guru ji.  Wherever Guru ji went, thousands followed him.  They chanted: “Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji!”  Wherever Guru ji’s Simran happened, the Sikhs recited and sang Bani in love.  They pondered on the meanings of Gurbani.  They were blessed in this way.

In Satyuga, there was a king named Raja Bain who was the father of Prithu Raja.  He was a Rishi Raja who made Satyuga into Kaliyuga.  Many thieves and sinners came about during his time.  There was no Satsangat nor was there Vivek.  That Satyuga (that was lost time) now came within Kaliyuga because of Prabhoo Guru Nanak Dev ji.  Satsang happened everywhere.  The Simran of Satnam, which destroys the pain, was being done.  The Sikhs got together and discussed Gyaan along with singing Keertan.  The radiance spread in the world.  The Jai Jaikaar happened in every direction of Guru Nanak Dev ji.  The great love overflowed in everyone’s heart.  Thousands came to Kartarpur and had Langar.  Money and gifts were brought along with food but Guru ji did not accept anything.  Everything was returned.  He bathed at 2 am everyday.  He would stand in the Ravi till morning.  He stood in the water, immersed in the water that came to his neck.  Bhai Lehna ji would go with Guru ji and do the beautiful Seva of his beautiful feet.  It was the Him Rut (winter) during that time.

One day, it rained a lot.  Guru ji was standing in the water, doing his Tapasya.  Bhai Lehna ji sat near the shore of the Ravi.  It was really cold.  Bhai Lehna ji’s clothes became wet.  He felt really cold.  His body shivered from the cold.  His teeth clenched.  He couldn’t speak.  He was really cold.  He fainted and fell.  He was unaware of his body.  Guru ji’s clothes fell onto the ground.  Seeing Bhai Lehna ji in this state, Guru Nanak Dev ji came out of the Ravi.  He saw the fainted Bhai Lehna ji, whose clothes were wet.  His whole body was numb.  Guru ji touched his lotus foot to Bhai Lehna ji’s body and made the cold go away.  Bhai Lehna ji felt the heat and came to his senses.  He saw Guru ji standing above him and quickly got up.  He grabbed Guru ji’s feet.  Guru ji spoke to his servant: “what happened to you?”  Bhai Lehna ji folded his hands and said: “listen Prabhoo ji of what happened to me: my clothes got wet and I got really cold.  My teeth clenched and I fell unconscious.  Your lotus feet touched me and made the cold go away from my body.  I’m aware now.  You make all of the pains go away for you servants.”  Sri Prabhoo ji, the Compassionate One, said: “the great earning that I am doing, the strict Tapp I’m doing, this is for the Sikhs.  The ones who have faith in me, who earn the Shabad by their mind, the Nanak Panthis, who do the Simran of Vahiguru and remain desireless; they won’t see the Jumms.  They will receive Mukti in a peaceful way.”  The Lotus-Faced one spoke such words and then came back to the village with Bhai Lehna ji.

Guru ji came to the Dharamsala and sat on his Singhasan.  Many Sangat came.  Guru ji did a strict Tapp.  There was a nice area in Kartarpur which Guru ji made a small hut.  He made a seat of stones which was painful.  It was as big as his body.  There was no extra room in the hut.  He remained seated there and only left to bathe 2 times a day.  People from all 4 directions came there.  They did Guru ji’s Darshan and bowed to him.  They had their wishes fulfilled by Guru ji.  Langar was made 2 times a day.  Everyone ate as much as they wished.  Many cooks made a lot of Langar.  They took the grains and crops from the storage.  They made the Langar by proper traditions.  The food was delicious.  When the food would be ready, the Langri would go to Guru ji and stand in front of him with folded hands.  He wouldn’t say anything.  After some time, the Langri would stay standing till Guru ji would open his eyes.  When Guru ji would open his eyes, he would say: “oh Brahmin, is the Langar ready?  Tell me, did you come to call me?”  The Brahmin would say: “Sri Prabhoo ji, by your compassion, the Langar is ready.”  The Master would go with the Langri and eat as much as he wished.  The Langar would be distributed after Guru ji ate.  The Sangat would sit and eat Langar.  This happened two times a day.  Everyone came to eat.  Nobody was refused.  Everyone did Guru ji’s Darshan and had their wishes fulfilled.  They recited Gurbani with love.  Some stayed near Guru ji and received bliss.  Some would go home after doing Guru ji’s Darshan.  A lot of time passed like this.  Guru ji continued his strict Tapp.  He put his body in pain.  He stopped eating after a while.  He only ate an Akk flower.  He spent his day and night with the Akk.  He didn’t drink water either.  He kept his signs within a 2 Kos perimeter.  He stayed within that area.  He uttered Gurbani and spent the whole day standing in Tapp.  The Banis which called out for the Lord, such as Baramaha of Tukhari Raag and other Banis with intricate measures were uttered during this time.  Stading near the Ravi he saw the month of Vaisakh arriving and called out to the Lord, with his hands spread out, extending his arms:

Vaisakh (Vai, Sakh – that communion) is so pleasant; the branches blossom with new leaves (the robes of the Gyaan adorned).  The soul-bride yearns to see you, Lord, at your door (sitting in Satsangat).  Come, O Lord, and take pity on me!  Please come to my home (my heart), O my Beloved; carry me across the treacherous world-ocean.  Without You, I am not worth even an adh (Kodi).  Who can estimate my worth, if I am pleasing to You?  I see You, that you show me, O my Love.  I know that You are not far away; I believe that You are deep within me, and I realize Your Presence.  O Nanak, Vaisakhi (that communion) is pleasant to the ones who met the Prabhoo, who accepted the Shabad. ||6||

(SGGS 1108)

He walked to and fro in that area the whole day.  He tied a red kapeen (langote) to his waist.  He tied a small Dastaar to his head.  He wore nothing else during this time.  He let go of his other clothes.  The Prabhoo walked with his naked body above the waist, in this way.   He only wore a copper red Langote and a small Dastaar.  At night time, he would sit in the hut, atop of the seat made of stones.  The Giver of Mukti stayed there all night.  At 2 am he would bathe in the Ravi River.  He would stand in the river then.  The sign he had up to 2 kos, he roamed that area and didn’t sit to rest.  He would keep composing and uttering Bani the whole day.  The Sikhs would hear the Bani and write it down.  He did Keertan of Akaal as he walked.  He had left the worldly ways behind.  He spent a long time like this.  After a while, he stopped eating the Akk flower.  He ate a grain of sand everyday.  He didn’t eat anything else.  He spoke from his Holy mouth: “your name is beautiful.  Your time is beautiful.”  He said this and walked around the boundaries.  The radiance of his face became really bright.  The people heard of this praise and came to see him.  They did his Darshan and stayed close to him.  The people that came would grab Guru ji’s feet.  Guru ji would say to them: “stop Purkha!  May you be blessed.  Do the Simran of the Naam and your pains will run away.”  Guru ji spent many days like this.  In Kaliyuga, he saved many with the Naam.  His Darshan along with hearing the Shabad, the big sinners were saved in this world.

2-50 Testing Gursikhi

To clean the field of the heart is to take out all of the vices, like weeds.  The compassion of Satguru ji is like the rain.  The crops of Bhagti will grow.

In this way, Sri Prabhoo Guru ji did a strict Tapp and composed a lot of Gurbani.  The Gurbani came to him from Sach Khand.  His praises spread far and wide to homes in foreign lands.  They all said: “Dhan Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji.”  Many people gathered and came to do the Darshan of the Giver of Mukti.  Some did his Darshan and went back home but some decided to stay with the Prabhoo forever.  There was a great crowd in Kartarpur.  They ate Langar at 2 times a day.  There was no shortage of food.  Everyone in Kartarpur ate from the Langar.  A lot of people came from far away lands.  The Sangat came and couldn’t be counted.  They did Guru ji’s Darshan and were happy.  Many years passed like this.  Guru ji instilled the message of “Nam, Dhaan and Ishnaan,” in all.  The sounds of Keertan were always heard in Kartarpur.  The good wisdom of Bhagti was shining brightly.  There were Jaikaras from every direction of Guru ji.  The Shabad and Simran was practiced a lot.  There was a lot of discussions of Brahm all the time.

Guru ji decided to test the Gursikhi.  Listen ahead to the Katha of what the Gunkhaani did.  Guru ji reduced the Langar to only once a day.  He told the Sikhs: “plough the fields.  Do the farming with love.  Your wisdom will become pure.”  He said this and took the Sangat with him.  He made them do Seva all day long.  He didn’t let anyone sit.  When the Sikhs saw this, some returned home and took care of their work.  Some stayed for four or five days and worked under hunger.  They were burnt of hunger.  They let go of the plough and asked for leave from Guru ji.  They would go back home and do their work.  About half of the Sangat left under the circumstances.  Everyone was told by the Prabhoo: “now, instead of eating everyday, we will eat once in two days.  Let’s get rid of the problem and plough the fields.”  Ten days were spent like this.  The people were anxious from the hunger and tired from ploughing the fields all day.  Many more Sikhs went home.  Very few remained.  They ploughed the fields for 12 hours a day along with other instructions from Guru ji.  These Sikhs were determined till death.  They accepted death and didn’t want to leave under any circumstances.  They did the Seva with great hunger.  They became weak but didn’t go home.  The Prabhoo said: “prepare Langar as it was before.  Make the Sikhs satiated.”  The food was at full levels.  The Sikhs ate till they were full, 2 times a day.  They still worked all day long.  The fields were green because of this.  They worked hard and produced a lot of crops.  They said to Guru ji: “by your grace, the crops are ready.  What is your command?”  Satguru ji said: “harvest the crops.  Gather them but don’t re-seed.”  The Sikhs took their sickles and cut the crops.  They all harvested the crops and piled them up.  The Sikhs came to Guru ji and said: “the crops have been harvested and gathered.  The piles are really high.  Give us your command.”  Prabhoo ji heard this and went to the storage area.  Guru ji stood there and was happy to see the crops.  He said: “good work!  Shaabaash!  Your hard work paid off.  The Seva you did for the Guru, listen to me now but you can do as you please.”  The Sikhs said: “what is in our hands?  We work by your words.”  Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji said: “listen to my words with your ears: if we become greedy, nothing comes to our hands.  Set ablaze all of these crops.  Burn them all with fire.  Let go of your greed.”  The Sikhs were surprised to hear this.  They said to each other: “why should we burn these?  We worked really hard to harvest these in hunger.  We went through pain to raise these crops.”  Some said: “we can’t burn these.”  They said this and moved back from the piles.  Some talked amongst themselves: “we are under his command.  We shouldn’t look at profit or loss.  We should obey his command.”  They took the fire and lit the piles of crops on fire.  The crops were dry so they burned quickly.  The people were surprised to see this.  Some went back home seeing this.  The way of the Guru could not be known.  The wise Sikhs bowed to Guru ji’s lotus feet and said: “Jai, Jai!”

Guru ji came back to Kartarpur where the discussions of the Shabad happened.  When some days passed, Guru ji started a new drama.  He tied a knife to his waist and dressed like a hunter.  He took many pigs in front of him and had a few dogs behind him.  He stood outside of Kartarpur.  The Sikhs were surprised to see Guru ji.  Many lost their faith.  Like a strong wind uprooting the trees, the Sikhs lost their faith.  They came to Kartarpur and sat down.  They said to each other: “looks like Sri Guru ji has become a Divana.  He’s doing wrong things.  How can we stay with him now?  He’s speaking nonsense.  We can’t see his form like this.  He has pigs and dogs with him.”  Everyone left Guru ji except for Bhai Lehna ji.  He stood near Guru ji with his hands folded.  He had given his body, mind and wealth to Guru ji.  How could he leave?  He had given everything he had to Guru ji.  Sri Satguru ji at that point said a Shabad:

Sriraag Mahalla 1 Ghar 4..

(The Jeev) has one dog (greed) and two female gods (Asa and Trishna).  In the early morning, they begin barking constantly till the evening.

Falsehood is the dagger; through deception, they eat the carcasses of the dead (deception).  I have taken on the form of a Dhaanak (hunter), Oh Kartar! ||1||

I (the Jeev) have not followed the Master’s good advice, nor have I done good deeds.  I (the Jeev) am deformed and horribly disfigured (as I don’t see my real form).

Your one Name alone, Lord, saves the world.  This is my hope; this is my support. ||1||Rahao||

With my mouth I slander, day and night.  I spy on the houses of others-I am such a wretched low-life!

Lust and anger dwell in my body, like the Chandaal (who cremates the dead).  I have taken on the form of a Dhaanak (hunter), Oh Kartar! ||2||

I (the Jeev) have the noose in my mind (for others) although I appear gentle, dressed like good people.  I am a robber-I rob the land.

I (the Jeev) appear wise but carry loads of sin.  I have taken on the form of a Dhaanak (hunter), Oh Kartar!  ||3||

I (the Jeev) have not appreciated what You have done for me, Lord; I take from others and exploit them.  What face shall I show You, Lord? I am a sneak and a thief.

Nanak, I speak humbly as I ponder on this.  I have taken on the form of a Dhaanak (hunter), Oh Kartar! ||4||29||

Guru ji sang this Shabad in Raag, giving an Alaap as he sang in a high pitch.  He recited the Shabad and wandered around the thick jungle.  His face was really radiant like the sun.  His form was scary.  It was hard to look at him.  It was like looking directly at the sun.  He spent some time like this.  Bhai Lehna ji followed him with his hands folded.  He said: “listen Prabhoo, this drama that you are doing, everyone is shocked to see you like this.  They are worried that you have gone senile.  They lost their patience and left.  There is nobody with you oh Master.  I’m the only one here as I am never going to leave you.  Whatever tests you do, I will tolerate them all.  I have sold my body and mind to you.  I have bought your love.  You can leave me or kill me.  I am your purchased slave.  If you want to kill me, go ahead.  If you wish for it in your heart, you can leave me alive.  If my body is destroyed for you then I would consider myself as fortunate.  This is my only wish in my heart: I wish to destroy my body for you.  I don’t ever want to be in doubt seeing your Maya.  Why are you doing such a drama?”  Guru ji heard this and looked towards Bhai Lehna ji.  He spoke words, to take people out of Hell: “this is what I feel like doing.  I wish to stay alone.  I don’t like the crowds.  Why have you delayed in leaving me?  Leave me and go away.  Obey my words and don’t stay with me.  Leave me and go back.”  Bhai Lehna ji heard this and thought about this.  He folded his hands and said: “I cannot disobey you, Guru ji.  I will obey your every command.”  Bhai Lehna ji left to go back.  Guru ji looked towards Bhai Lehna ji and said: “let me tell you again: If you look back at me, then you will get what you deserve!  Don’t stand near me.  Run away and don’t come back!”  Bhai Lehna ji heard these words and did not look back.  He ran to Kartarpur like soldiers in an army running away.  It was like the army lost and someone was going to give the news to the king.  He came to Kartarpur and didn’t stop on the way.

Many Sikhs were sitting in the Dhera.  Those Sikhs had no attachment of home or wealth.  They came to Bhai Lehna ji and asked: “why are you like this?  You are sweating and tired.  You’re out of breath.  Why did you run so fast?  Tell us about Sri Guru ji.  What did he say to you?”  Bhai Lehna ji sat all the Sikhs down and bowed to their feet with love.  He said to the Sikhs with sweet words: “to save the people of Kaliyuga, the Kartaar took an Avatar among us.  Don’t see him as a human.  Don’t doubt him.  He is the Avatar of Sri Parmeshwar.  He is the Giver of Mukti.  Don’t see him as anything else.  He was doing a drama to test us.  We are his purchased slaves.  If he wishes to keep us or kill us, that’s up to him.  We gave everything we have to him.  Why doubt what he does?  If Sri Guru ji comes this way and does another drama, don’t get scared or be in doubt.  If your head goes, then let it go.  This tradition of testing has always been there.  Sri Guru ji didn’t do anything new.  The son of Ghaadi, Vishvamittar, tested Hari Chand.  He stayed truthful and achieved bliss.  Raja Shivi gave his own flesh for a pigeon.  He received a high status for his patience.  Raja Mordhuj’s mind was drenched in Bhagti.  He passed the test that the Prabhoo gave.”  Bhai Lehna ji said other Kathas and made the Sikhs understand.

After about 3 hours, Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji came back.  The Sikhs got up, all of a sudden.  They folded their hands and bowed.  They were scared and amazed.  Nobody said anything.  Guru ji wore a red-copper kapeen with a Kulla on his head.  He held a Kutka in his hand.  There were no other clothes that he wore.  He erased the bad wisdom of the Sikhs.  He scared the vices out of the Sikhs.  When the Sikhs bowed to Guru ji’s feet, Guru ji would hit them with his Kutka on their backs.  The Sikhs were surprised.  They moved back when they got hit.  They couldn’t figure out what Guru ji was doing.  Guru ji was erasing their sins.  He hit everyone with his Kutka.  Sri Guru ji then said: “why are you sitting here?  Who are you?  Go to your homes.  There is nothing for you here now.  Run away from here!”  The Sikh folded their hands and spoke in fear: “we are your Sikhs.  We wish for Mukti.”  When they called themselves a Sikh, Guru ji hit them with his Kutka again.  When the Sikhs saw this, they ran away out of fear.  Only a few remained.  Guru ji asked the few: “since when have you been my Sikhs? Tell me quickly.  Don’t waste time.”  The Sikhs said: “since you made us your Sikhs.  You are carefree.  We are in your shelter.  We want our pain to go away.”  They wanted to speak but were scared.  The radiance of Guru ji was like the sun’s bright light.  The Sikhs couldn’t tolerate it.  Prabhoo ji heard this and hit them with his Kutka again. The Sikhs lost their patience and ran away.  They were hurt from getting hit with the Kutka.  The Kutka was thick and Guru ji swung hard.  The Sikhs ran away home.  Very few remained.  Sri Guru ji said to them: “if you are my Sikhs then obey me without delay.  Come and follow me.”  Guru ji walked on ahead.  The Sikhs followed.  The Sikhs that followed, they walked in fear.  To test Sikhi, Guru ji did this drama.  Only the one that had the Lord’s compassion would pass.

Guru ji took everyone to the thick jungle.  There was a dead body on top of a pyre.  There was a white sheet on top of the dead body.  There was wood nearby.  The Light of the Bedis stood there.  The Sikhs came there.  Guru ji said to all: “if you call yourselves my Sikhs, then obey my words.  If you don’t want to go home then eat this dead body.  If you don’t eat it then you will regret it.”  The Sikhs were surprised to hear this.  The Sikhs lost their patience.  Some left and went home.  Some hid in the jungle.  Some stayed, being stubborn.  Guru ji said to them: “if you stay here then eat the body.  Don’t delay or else go home.  Do one or the either.”  Everyone was trembling in fear.  They folded their hands and said: “we are your Sikhs.  We won’t go home.”  Guru ji hit them with his Kutka again.  He said: “you deserve to be beaten.  You call yourselves Sikhs but don’t obey me!”  He kept hitting everyone.  Everyone ran away out of fear.  Nobody stayed other than Bhai Lehna ji.  Guru ji said to him: “why are you standing?  Why don’t you leave?  If you are my Sikh then obey me.  Eat the dead body.  Don’t delay.”  Bhai Lehna ji folded his hands and said: “my oath is that I will never disobey you.  You are carefree.  I am the Sikh in your shelter.  You can keep me or kill me.  I can’t leave your shelter.”  Sri Guru ji said: “if you don’t want to leave me then eat the dead body.”  Bhai Lehna ji walked around the dead body.  Guru ji said: “why are you taking so much time?”  Bhai Lehna ji said: “from which direction should I begin eating?  I was waiting for your command.”  Guru ji said: “start from the feet and eat till the head.  Obey my command.”  Bhai Lehna ji advanced quickly and took the sheet off the dead body.  He was drenched in the Guru’s command.  When he took the white sheet off, there was only Karah Prashaad.  In front of Bhai Lehna ji’s eyes, the Karah Prashaad looked like a dead body.  He was surprised to see the Tihaaval.  Bhai Lehna ji bowed to Guru ji’s lotus feet.  He folded his hands and said: “oh Parbrahm Kartaar the infinite, you are the Ikankaar who controls the whole universe.  To save the people of Kaliyuga, you came in human form.  Only you know your nature.  Nobody else can know you.”  The Compassionate One heard this and was happy.  He looked at Bhai Lehna ji with blessings.  He said: “my form will now be yours.  Your form will become mines.  Such an equality will form.  I give you the whole universe after me.  You will be the Guru in a good way.  You will be seen.  You will keep the seed of Sikhi.  The Sikhs will all have faith in you.  The complete Gyaan and Vivek will illuminate in you.  You will be the Guru of the world and sit on the Gurta Ghaddi.  The Sikhs will be dependant on you and will follow you.  You will be the support of the world.  You will save the world and cut the pains of the Sikhs.  There will be no one equal to you in this world.  You kept the seed of Sikhi.”  After saying this, the Gunkhaani came back with Bhai Lehna ji and sat in the Dharamsala.  Everyone was told to come back without fear.  Doing the Darshan of Guru ji, the pain would run away.
