2-41 Ubaray Khan/ Abdul Rehman
Do the Simran of Guru Gobind Singh ji, every day. There is nobody like him. While alive, he gives you the joy of kingdoms and when you die, he gives you Mukti.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, listen to the great Katha. Malo had a friend who was a Khan. When the Khan came to meet him, he did a Salaam and sat down near him with love. Malo praised Guru Nanak Dev ji: “listen Ubaray Khan, Khuddah came as Guru Nanak Dev ji. Shaishnaag sings his praises but can’t finish singing about him. How can I praise him? I praise him all the time. You should go and do his Darshan. Have the doubts of your heart destroyed.” Hearing the praises of Guru ji, the Khan quickly left.
The Khan came to Guru ji and said: “Salaamalaykum.” He sat down with joy. He said: “which ideology is greater, Hindu or Turks? Tell me Tappa ji.” Sri Guru ji said: “the two sides are like 4 days long. The body dies and mixes to dust. The foolish person loses the life in foolish conflicts. They are forgotten and don’t look for the righteous path. They go to Hell and get beaten. Those are in joy who accept the will. They do the Prema Bhagti and sing the praises. They don’t come and go into the world again. A person should do Bandagi. Wear the jewellery of the Naam around your neck. The wise ones spend time in the Sangat. They rid themselves of their pride-filled claims. The creator created everyone as the same. The fools make false claims and make two sides. They fight uselessly. Without Prema Bhagti, they go to Hell. They come and go with doubt. Meeting the Satguru, they then get the right wisdom.” Ubaray Khan heard this and had love come to his mind. He said: “Tappa ji, give me the Darshan of your feet. As I heard of you from my friend, that is exactly how your Darshan was. You are the blissful form. Fulfill my wish. Oh Omniscient One, bless me.” Guru Nanak Dev ji was sitting in an Asana. His clothes covered his whole body. When he heard the request, Guru ji took his feet out, who are meditated upon by Munnis, Inder and Daynts. These feet blessed countless Sikhs and servants. The Kavi is a sacrifice unto these feet. Ubaray Khan was drenched in love. He placed his head on Guru ji’s feet. He held Guru ji’s feet. He rubbed his hands on his face. He was really happy. He kissed Guru ji’s feet, over and over again. His big attachment was being destroyed. Ubaray Khan saw his real form. His doubts all ran away. He had faith. He was blessed. His bonds of attachment were broken. He broke the Jumms trap. He sat for an hour and a half. He said: “I’ve met the Giver of Mukti today. My heart is calm. The attachment is gone. You are the destroyer of pain and suffering. You are beautiful. Please give me permission so I may go home. I will come back to you. You are the blesser. Have mercy on me that I may never forget your form. You are the creator and the sustainer of the world. You are the destroyer as well. Give me your Naam is I can wear it in my neck. I am blessed to see you. I won’t leave without taking your permission.” Guru ji said: “food is ready. Eat and then go, Ubaray. The Nirankaar has been compassionate upon you. Your bonds are broken. Your attachment is gone.” Ubaray Khan said: “Tappa ji, wherever there is food, it is all your food. They all beg from you. You are the only giver. Please give me permission to go home. I will come back quickly here.” He took leave and went back home. He had the praise of Sri Guru ji in his heart.
A Fakir named Adrehman (Abdul Rehman) met Ubaray Khan. Adrehman was worshiped in the world. Ubaray Khan went to him and did his Salaam. He praised Guru ji to him. He said: “in Kaliyuga, an Avatar has come. I went to him. His Darshan gives Mukti. He was as I heard of him.” The Fakir heard this and got angry. Sri Guru ji’s praises made him angry. It was like the moon who bothers the separated wife. The Fakir spoke in jealousy: “who is this impure Hindu, whom you praise? You became his friend. I will make him get up and go somewhere else.” Ubaray Khan said: “why would you make him go away? Allah came in a pure body. I’ve seen nobody else like him. You don’t know him. How will you make him get up and go?” Adrehman said: “you are an unwise fool to follow a Hindu. You call him Khuddah and speak to me about him. Your words are silly and they make me laugh. I will make him get up and leave from here. Don’t praise a Hindu again. You lost your faith and speak nonsense. Don’t say this to anyone else. Obey me.” Ubaray Khan said: “there is no Hindu or Turk. He is neither. Oh Sheikh ji, who will you make leave? He is Khuddah himself. Understand this in your mind. Don’t speak such words. You will be embarrassed and regret your actions. When you meet him, you won’t know what to say. If he was your equal, you can be jealous. He is the greater one. You need to request him. This is good for you.” The Khan then went quiet. Adrehman was angry. He couldn’t say anything. Guru ji’s praises weren’t tolerated by him. Ubaray Khan went to his home. He ate food and slept the night.
In the morning, Ubaray Khan got ready to go. He took a cloth of 16 yards. The cloth was called Bafta. It was expensive. He went to guru ji and presented the cloth. He grabbed Guru ji ‘s feet and bowed his head. He put the dirt from the feet on to his forehead and face. He sat down and did Guru ji’s Darshan. Sri Guru ji said: “Khan ji, may Khuddah do good for you. May you be given Naam. May your attachment be destroyed. Such a cloth that you brought, this is not for me. I am a Fakir. This is not for me. I accept your gift but this cloth is for kings. Your love is complete for me. The Khuddah has forgiven you.” Ubaray Khan heard this and said: “are you forgiving me or killing me? If you are forgiving me, then take this cloth. If you want to kill me, then you can return the cloth.” Seeing the love, Guru ji sent a servant to get a tailor: “get a tailor so this Khan is happy. He is my Sikh; I need to make him happy.” The servant brought a tailor. The cloth was given to the tailor. The tailor began to measure the cloth. It was a very fine fabric. The thread was very fine. 1,600 threads were in 1 yard. The tailor said: “as you command, Tappa ji, I will make this cloth.” Guru ji said: “make 2 Chadras.” Guru ji gave his directions. The Tailor obeyed and sewed two Chadras in a nice way. He was wise. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji wore both pieces. He had given Mukti to many servants. He took this cloth to give Ubaray Khan Mukti. Seeing the beautiful cloths, Ubaray Khan spoke with a happy heart: “I don’t see anyone like you. I see myself fortunate. You are the Master of the Universe. You are the greatest. The insentient plants and animals, you give to all. I got to do your Seva. I am blessed. You are my Master.” The Omniscient One said: “tell me about Adrehman. Why is he angry at him? What did he say?” Ubaray Khan was surprised to hear this. He thought to himself: “how did he know without me telling him?” He then said: “Oh Master, you know everything. Why are you asking me, oh Omniscient One. The words that he said, I can’t say them to you. He dresses like a Fakir but is far from it. He is not on the Path to Fakiri. He has jealousy in his mind. Hearing praises of others, he burns in jealousy. Your praises are like the full moon. He is in pain like the Chakva.” Guru ji said: “tell me what he said, as he said it. Don’t hide anything from me. You won’t be guilty of anything.” Ubaray Khan spoke: “he has bad wisdom. He is filled with ego. I praised you to him and he got angry. He burned in ego. He said: “Hindus are impure. You befriended him. Why are you praising him? I will make him get up and throw him far away.” I tried to make him understand that you are Khuddah in human form but he didn’t listen to any word of mine. He remained egotistically stiff. He couldn’t command me so he went quiet. He spoke with ego. He will be embarrassed if you meet him.”
Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, listen, after this, The Guru Bhagwanta said to me: “let’s go Bala. Let’s go and see him. Let’s take out this Sheikh’s air.” After saying this, Guru ji left to embarrass the Sheikh. Guru ji said: “Ubaray, you go and I will come after.” Ubaray Khan left. Guru ji walked after, slowly. The Fakir was in his palanquin. He was egotistical. He had a lot of people with him. Sri Guru ji was coming. Everyone saw this and said to the Sheikh: “listen Shah ji, the Tappa is coming.” Adrehman heard this and got off his palanquin to respectfully welcome Guru ji. He saw Guru ji coming. The Fakir stood and wondered why Guru ji was coming. When Guru ji came close, the Sheikh kissed Guru ji’s hands. He spoke: “Tappa ji, are you well?” Guru ji said: “listen Adrehman, everything is well. Nothing is well though.” Adrehman asked: “is everything well?” Guru ji said: “it’s well but not well.” He asked this 3 times. Guru ji responded the same way. Adrehman then said: “listen Tappa ji, I am surprised by your words. How should I understand your words? Are you well or are you not well? Tell me. Help me understand this.” Sri Guru ji said: “listen Sheikh ji. Everything is well. The way it is not well, understand this: you want to make me get up and go away, which land did I take from you? Did I take your money or wealth from you. Why are you my enemy? Why do you want to make me go away with fearlessness? You can take my place right now, from where you want to make me go away from.” Adrehman said: “who told you this? Somebody is lying to you. I didn’t say anything like that.” When he said this, Ubaray Khan illuminated in astonishment and said: “you said this to me yesterday about praising and Hindu! You said you would kick him out without delay. You are denying it now! Why are you embarrassed? What you said before, why don’t you say it now?” Adrehman said: “oh Khan, sit down where you are. You and I are not equals. Stay quiet. The Tappa and I are speaking. We will figure it out between us. You don’t need to speak. You have no use speaking here.” Ubaray Khan heard this and said: “my home is with the Tappa. He is my Peer of Peers. I am the Mureed of his servants. You slandered him. You will be punished for sinning. Speak how you did before. Your pain will then go away.”
Guru ji smiled when he heard this. He saw Ubaray Khan’s state and Adrehman embarrassed. His heart was burnt. The egotistical one said: “Hindu or Muslim, which is greater? Which ideology do you follow? Tell me everything.” Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “I have let go of both sides. The Hindus and Turks fight foolishly. Satan lives in their minds. They are not at peace. To make their egos bigger, they keep fighting with each other. They are unwise and foolish. The Jumms will punish them. They are stuck in Duality. They are in pain then. They forget the Satnam. They haven’t met the Satguru. They have no wisdom. Some doctors cut and know how to fix a broken bone. They cut through the flesh and connect the bone. The unwise doctors don’t recognize the broken bone. They only treat the wounded flesh. The bone doesn’t fix. They become ill. The Satguru is the one that gets rid of the attachment. He gets rid of the vices. Then he gives the wisdom of the Aatma. They don’t suffer pain of being born again. Some Gurus are weak. They don’t destroy the vices of the students. They give wisdom and want them to be blessed. The ego and attachment are not destroyed in this way. You met a weak Guru who didn’t show you your form. You are stuck in ego. You see your body as your real self.” The Sheikh said: “Nanak Tappa, how big are you? You don’t look towards anyone and have let go of both sides.” Sri Guru ji said: “my vision is too far away. I am always in the presence of the Akaal Purakh. Listen Sheikh, this is a good thing who have lost themselves to make them in peace. They achieve the Niranjan. They chant the name and lose their ego. There is only one Khuddah, the creator. The good and bad is made by him. Nothing is high or low. They are as they are created.” Guru ji looked with a divine vision and destroyed the ego of the Fakir.
Adrehman heard the wisdom and became humble. He grabbed Guru ji’s feet and said: “Tappa, forgive my mistakes. I slandered you out of error. I didn’t know your greatness. Forgive me.” Ubaray Khan said: “you wanted to make the Tappa leave. Why aren’t you kicking him out now? You met him and lowered your neck. One should think before speaking. How can an ant eat a mountain? How can a firefly compare to the sun? You didn’t understand this. That’s what yours and Tappa ji’s difference is.” Adrehman said: “before I thought he was an idol-worshipping Hindu, but he is not like them. He is different than Hindus and Muslims. His ideology is really great. Nobody can compare to him. I met him and now I know of him.” The people around Adrehman all bowed to Guru j’s feet. Sri Guru ji said: “the lovers of Khuddah have his fear in their hearts. They don’t make mistakes. They live in fear all the time of Khuddah. They do Simran in Prema Bhagti. They became great and humble.” Adrehman was really happy. He then left. Ubaray Khan came to Guru ji and said; “you love Prema Bhagti. You destroy ego and give Mukti. Set your feet in my home and make it pure. Stay the night in my home.” Guru ji heard this and went to his home. A nice bed as laid out for Prabhoo ji. A Brahmin was called to cook for Guru ji. Ubaray Khan served Guru ji’s feet. For 2 days, Guru ji stayed in Ubaray Khan’s home. He was fortunate. Guru ji then came to Kartarpur. The egotistical ones fell to his feet.
2-42 The Prasang of the Child/ Moola Keer/ Pritha Kheda/ Prithi Mal Sehgal/ Rama/ Wisdom for Didi
Be intoxicated with the cannabis of meditating on the Lotus Feet of Sri Guru ji. Renounce your wisdom and intellect; be drenched in the colour of the One Prabhoo.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, listen to the Katha. The Sri Gunkhaani lived in the village of Kartarpur. A lot of time had passed. Guru ji’s glories spread a lot, all around. Many people came to do the Darshan of Guru ji. They came with their wishes and had them fulfilled, receiving the fruit. Guru ji’s glory was like the moonlight, spreading everywhere into the 14 Loks. The saints were like the Chakors, staring at Guru ji like the full moon. Their hearts were in bliss. Just as the separated wives are in pain seeing the moon, so were the slanderers, seeing Guru ji’s glory. The slanderers were like the Chakvas in pain. The Sikhs were like the stars, making the moon more radiant. Hindus and Turks came to Kartarpur to worship the feet of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. The Muslims and Hindus received wisdom and became Mureeds and Sikhs. They did his Darshan and had their big sins washed away. The people of villages and cities all came to see Guru ji, hearing his glory. They praised him. Brahamachaaris, Bairagis, Jogis, Sanyasis, low and high, king and pauper; they all sang Guru ji’s praises, who was without any fault. The Pandits and uneducated people; they all sang Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji’s praises. The men and women of Kartarpur, there was always a crowd there. Guru ji sat in the Darbar at Amritvela. Keertan occurred till morning. The Sangat gathered at around 3 am to ponder the Shabads of Keertan.
There was a child who came to listen to Keertan at Amritvela. He listened with love and brought yoghurt everyday. He would stand behind Guru ji to listen. During the Bhog, he would bow and go to his home. He did this everyday. (The child’s name was Taru Popat, as per Bhai Mani Singh ji’s Teeka of Sikha di Bhagat Mala). One day, Guru ji said: “don’t let the child go home today.” The Sikhs heard this. The child was brought to Guru ji after the bhog that day. Guru ji asked the child: “why do renounce your sleep and come here at 2 am with love? To play and laugh is easy. Children love doing these things. You leave these things and come to the Satsangat. You come everyday and don’t waste your time.” The child folded his hands and said: “listen Prabhoo ji of mine, one day my mother sent me to get firewood for cooking. She made me light the fire but I couldn’t light it. My mother said to me: “put the small pieces of wood first and then light the fire with patience.” I took this wisdom and then lit the small pieces first. Then I put the longer ones into the fire. I saw this and thought to myself: “the nature of fire and death is the same: they do not know small from big; young from old. They eat everyone without discrimination. Nobody can be saved from these two.” Your Darshan is inspiring. I thought about this because of your Sangat. I said to my mother: “I don’t know when death can come. Who knows if I may die young or old? For this reason, I will sing the praises of Sri Prabhoo ji.” Seeing the fear of the great death over my head, I come to your shelter everyday. I listen to your Katha. I renounce sleep for this reason.” After saying this, the child bowed to Guru ji. When the Sangat heard the child’s words, they were all amazed: “he is so young and comes to the Sangat. He made his wisdom pure. He thinks deep.” The whole world is trapped in the worldly tasks. Everyone is illusioned by the attachment of Maya. Guru ji uttered a Shabad for all:
Salok M:1..
Nanak, the Jeev is like a fish, the desire is like the Jheevar (fisherman), death (for the fish)..
The mind is blind, it never remembers (Akaal Purakh), it will be trapped by the net, without thought..
Nanak, the chit (conscious) is unaware (of Akaal Purakh), it is bound by worry and will leave like this..
If (Akaal Purakh) casts his vision, then he makes you meet the real form..2..
(SGGS 955)
The people heard Guru ji’s words, they became drenched in Bhajan. They thought of the Aatma Gyaan which gives all of the joys. The Master of the World casted his divine vision and gave Prema Bhagti to many.
One day, Guru ji was sitting down, a person named Bhai Moola Keer ji came to Guru ji. He was calm as soon as he did Guru ji’s Darshan. His vices ran away like the Juvasa is destroyed by rain. He folded his hands and said: “tell me, oh Omniscient Prabhoo, the wandering nature of the mind does not go away. It gets excited with the world. It likes dramas and exciting things. It wishes to gamble.” The Prabhoo heard this and spoke blessed words to the Sikh: “the Yugas that have passed, there were many kings who had wandering minds seeing prostitutes. The lustful desires came into their minds which were unstoppable. They lost their human lives in this way. They destroyed their Dharma and were punished in Hell. They then suffered. For this reason, don’t even bother looking at the prostitutes. Spend your time with the Satsang. The kings that gambled, they were faced with a lot of problems and cried. The Sikhs should discard these things. Obeying these words, one will be in joy. It is now the time of Kaliyuga. The Gursikhi has been illuminated. Love the Shabad and sing them. Do the work of Dharma and share your profits. Serve the Gursikhs with love. Wash their feet. Give clothes to the naked. Feed the hungry. Ponder on the meanings of the Shabad in the Sangat. You will be in joy then.” Hearing the wisdom, Bhai Moola ji became determined. He did as Guru ji said. Love came into his heart. He gave food to the hungry. He gave clothes to the naked poor people. Sidhs and Sadhoos came to his home and spent the nights.
One day, a thief came to Bhai Moola ji’s home. He dressed as a Sikh and spoke memorized Bani with false love. He was greedy. His wisdom was bad. Bhai Moola ji served him at night. Bhai Moola ji’s wife took her jewellery off at night. The thief saw this. When everyone went to sleep, the thief stole the jewellery. He was going to run away but the door was locked. He came back and woke up Bhai Moola ji. He spoke with deceit: “I need to go outside. My stomach is hurting. I need you to open the door.” Bhai Moola ji said: “Sant ji, why are you going out into the dark? Use the courtyard. The servants will clean up in the morning. I can clean up in the morning too.” The thief said: “I need to go outside. Your wife is here in the home. I am shy.” Bhai Moola ji got up with the keys. When they came to the courtyard just before the door, the thief dropped the jewellery from under his armpit. He got scared and didn’t pick up the gold. Bhai Moola ji picked up the gold and gave it to the thief with love. He took the thief outside of the home. Bhai Moola ji came back and went to sleep.
In the morning, Bhai Moola ji’s wife looked in her jewellery box and said: “I put my jewellery here. It is not there anymore. Where did they go? Has it been stolen?” Bhai Moola ji said: “at night, we were sleeping. Thieves came and took your jewellery. We didn’t wake up, that’s why they stole them. It is our fault. The Sikh that came to our home at night. He got up and left out of embarrassment. He thought he was going to get blamed for the theft. This is what he thought. He left early in the morning, using an excuse. The Sikh was not at fault.” Bhai Moola ji made new gold for his wife. He did it quickly for her joy.
After a few days, Bhai Moola ji came to Kartarpur. He bowed to Guru ji and did his Darshan. Guru ji said: “listen Moola, your heart is according to Sikhi. You kept my secret and therefore the Guru will keep your secrets. The Shabad is the Guru’s heart. Sarvan (listening), Mannan (accepting) Nidhyasan (practicing); do this with the Shabad. Gyaan will come to your heart. Your bonds of attachment in the world will be destroyed.” As soon as Guru ji said this, Bhai Moola ji became aware of all 3 states of time. He became blessed. His attachment was destroyed. He went home. His Hangta (ego of the body) and Mamta (attachment) were destroyed.
One day, in the Sangat, Prabhoo ji sat and did the Katha of a Shabad. Bhai Pritha ji and Bhai Kheda ji came to Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji for his Darshan. They bowed and sat down to listen to the Katha of the Shabad. After about 2 hours, Prabhoo ji said: “whatever wish is in your heart, ask them now.” After listening to the Katha, their minds were calm. They folded their hands and became humble. They spoke without greed: “Sri Guru ji, if you are compassionate then give us the shelter of your feet. We understand that the world is a myth, an illusion. Just as the worldly things seem like things in a dream, give us this vision. We wish to obey the command of the Prabhoo and be in joy. We don’t want anything else except for this.” Sri Prabhoo ji said: “my feet are where the Satsangat is. Do the Seva of the saints. Meet them and spend your time with them. There is no difference between the saints and Kartar. Understand this with determination. Do the work of Dharma and share your profits. If you earn this, you will be in my shelter. Recognize my Sargun form. The Shabad is my heart, my Nirgun form. Bodies meet and separate. The Shabad never separates.” Hearing Guru ji’s words, the two did as they were told. They achieved Jeevan Mukti. The words of the Satguru lived in their hearts. They saw the world as an illusion. There was nothing to achieve in the world. They didn’t come back to the world. They spent a lot of time at Kartarpur.
One day, the Giver of Mukti was sitting in his seat when Bhai Prithimal ji, Bhai Sehgal ji and Bhai Rama Didi ji came for the Darshan of Sri Guru. They came for the wish of Gyaan. They bowed to Guru ji’s feet and then spoke: “please tell us a path where we can become one with the Bishan form. We wish for the Sahij Mukti, easily. The hard actions we can’t do, such as Tapp and Japp.” Satguru ji heard this and said: “there are 3 types of Tapps, Tapasvis do: Tamsi- to stay naked and tolerate hunger, standing in water, tolerating heat. This is the Tamsi Tapp which is really difficult. The ones who do this Tapp with desires, they receive Ridhis and Siddhis. The desireless ones purify their minds though. One becomes egotistical because of this Tapp. Then the person has to come back to the earth. By the Rajsi and Shantki Tapp, you can be blessed and your 3 illnesses will go away.” The Sikhs said: “what is Rajsi and Shantki Tapp? Please tell us the difference. Rajoguni Tapp, Shantki Tapp and Bhagti; what are these? Tell us what these are.” Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “stopping your eyes from seeing other women; not listening to slander or praise, nor saying them; don’t waste your time in theft and extra marital affairs. Never go to the Kusangat. Don’t wish to do bad things. Make your eyes do the Darshan of saints. Make your ears listen to the praises of Gobind. Never lie from your mouth. Connect your mind to the praises of Parmeshwar. Do Seva and give charity with your hands. Always go to the Satsangat. This is the Rajsi Tapp. Listen to the Shantki Tapp: listening to and reciting to the Naam and the Bani of the Guru without laziness; when the mind attempts to go astray, stop it right away, over and over again; stop the mind from wandering, all the time; use your full strength to connect your mind to the Shabad. Just as you must give the Masala to the horse with force, as it does not wish to consume it, that is how the mind must be forced to connect to the Shabad. It does not love the Shabad and wanders in the 10 directions instead. The caretaker of the horse holds his hand in the mouth of the horse. The horse eventually gets tired and eats the masala. The body of the horse then becomes free of illnesses. If the caretaker becomes lazy and doesn’t give the masala to the horse, the horse can then get sick. The masala contains garlic, ginger and other spices. Many illnesses can develop if not given. The horse tricks you by quickly throwing the masala out. The horse has bad vices which can become its illnesses. The mind’s illnesses are the desires and greed. To connect with the Shabad, this is the masala medicine. When the Shabad makes the mind understand, it becomes the bit in the mouth of the horse. The illness of being born and dying is cured. This is the easy Shantki Tapp.” Hearing the words of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, the three Sikhs became calm in their minds. Their minds were reined and saddled. They went to the Satsangat and listened while sitting. They did Seva and sang the Shabads. They did the practice of the Shabad. They had the Gyaan of their real form. They were blessed along with their families. The wisdom of the Guru was engrained in their hearts.
2-43 Malo, Mango, Kaloo, Bhagta Ohri, Japoovanshi, Sheeha, Gajjan, Firna Khera, Jodh
The ones who listened to the Shabad of the Satguru, they have earned well. They crossed the difficult Maya. I bow to them.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, listen to the Katha ahead. The Prabhoo sat in the Dharamsala. Many people came to do his Darshan. They listened to the Shabad. Some stayed and some went back to their homes. Bhai Malo ji and Bhai Mango ji, both of these Sikhs came. They bowed to Guru ji’s feet. They folded their hands and said: “bless us oh Sri Guru ji, Treasure of Virtues. Please give us wisdom by which our births and deaths would be finished.” There was compassion in the eyes of the Prabhoo. He spoke to illuminate Bhagti: “to heat the body with fire or to stand in the cold river; fasting; staying naked to tolerate cold and heat; to keep your arms up into the air; to hang upside down; to stand on one foot to do Tapp for a long time; to eat fruits and roots; to live by the Teeraths; to travel the earth; to keep the Chandrayana fast; this is all Tamogun Tapp. Control the mind with the Gyaan Indriyas; attach the mind with the Katha and Keertan, all the time. Do it with eagerness. Sing the praises of Prabhoo and listen to them. Meet the Satsangat and ponder on the meanings of Gurbani. The Tamsi Karams are painful. These Rajsi Karams are easy and joyful. The reward is greater and effort is less. The Tamsi is more effort and less reward.” Bhai Malo ji then said: “reward is according to effort though. If your effort is less, the reward is less too. More effort gives greater rewards. The reward is according to the effort but you speak of a different way. I am in doubt. Please relieve it with compassion. This is the way of the world but you speak of something unorthodox. Please convince us. Tell us the easy way.” Sri Guru ji said: “don’t doubt this. Listen to the way of the world. One man goes to the jungle to collect the wood. He sells them in the market to make a living. He works a lot and gets really tired. He earns less. The person who has a shop, they have salt, oil and other foods. They make a lot of money. The merchant makes a lot more money and doesn’t get tired doing labor. The give and take of money, the merchants make a lot more money. A jeweler always sits in joy. They don’t give any problem to their body. They sell diamonds and pearls. The buyers come to them. They make the most profit. The Tamsi Tapp makes the body tired. Gyaan is achieved by this. By listening and reading to Katha and Keertan, the Upasana becomes solid. The mind is determined with solid Upasana. The Gyaan comes by itself then. This is Shantki Tapp which has a lot of reward.” Bhai Mango ji heard this and began to attach his mind to reading Bani. He sat in front and controlled his mind and Gyaan Indriyas. Both Sikhs did a lot of Keertan together with a still mind. Their minds became still. Their voices became sweet. Hearing them, love would come into the hearts of the listeners. Whoever listened to their Keertan, they let go of their vices. They did the work of Dharma and shared what they earned. They made Langar for everyone. The Sikh saints that went to their Dhera, they would be served with a lot of love. The country in which their home was, many people were blessed from their home. When they came for Darshan, they recited Shabads with many people. They were freed from the bonds of the world. They blessed many friends and relatives.
A Khatri named Bhai Kaloo ji came with a wish. He met Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. He folded his hands and bowed. He sat near Guru ji and said: “please tell me the characteristics of the Sunmukh and the Manmukh with compassion.” Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “the one who has put their back towards sins, face the good deeds, are aware of what the mind is thinking of, listens to the Shabad of the Guru with their mind, that is the Sunmukh. Listen to 4 more qualities with love, I will tell you: Maitri- being friendly with all, Karuna- compassion; these are 2. Mudata-to stay happy all the time is the third. The fourth is Upaikhya- to stay away from attachment and hatred. This is the Sunmukh.” Bhai Kaloo ji said: “I don’t understand. Please explain in detail.” Sri Guru ji said: “to be friendly is to be friends with everyone. See the joys of others as your own joy. Don’t be jealous seeing others as happy. If you have Vidya and money, give it to others and give them happiness. Do good as would do with friends, with everyone. These are the qualities of being friendly (Maitree). Don’t make anyone upset. If someone has less Vidya, money and strength than you; see them as your younger brother. Help them and make them better. Seeing people who are lesser than you, don’t show your ego off to them. This is compassion (Karuna), as told by saints. The ones who think like this in their heart, they are saved in the world. They are Sunmukh. If someone has more Vidya or virtues than you, don’t be jealous of them. Hearing their praises, the wise one gets happy. Just as hearing your father’s or Guru’s praise makes you happy, be happy in the same way when you hear the praises of someone greater than you. Say : “Vahiguru you are Dhan that you gave them so much Vidya.” Be happy with the Prabhoo when he gives so many qualities to others. Don’t slander them. This is Mudata. Live by the words of your Guru. Give wisdom to others which gives joy to all. Give the wisdom to the deserving one who will listen to it. If the person doesn’t accept the wisdom, don’t be stubborn with that. It is not their destiny to receive the good wisdom. Understand this. Stay quiet in front of them. This is Upaikhya. The one who follows the mind is the Manmukh. Stay a Sunmukh. See the Guru in front of you and chant the Naam to achieve the highest status.” Hearing the great words, the Sikhs understood the great wisdom. Bhai Kaloo ji was saved in this way. Whoever met him, they were saved as well. Whoever meets Guru ji with love and devotion; heard his words and touched his feet; they were all saved and saved others as well. Kavi Santokh Singh ji is a sacrifice unto such people.
One day, in the Dharamsala, the Prabhoo sat. Many Sikhs sat with him. The Keertan was being done in a sweet way. Hearing the Keertan, one became wise. Two Khatris: Bhai Bhagta Ohri ji and Bhai Japoovanshi ji came. They bowed with joy. They were drenched in love. They stood and did their Ardaas: “your Darshan illuminates Gyaan. The people who are great in Vidya, they always think of the Brahm and they are saved. We are without Vidya. Please tell us how we can be saved.” Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “let go of the ways of Manmukhs. You will be blessed then. You won’t come into the world again.” The two folded their hands and said: “what are the ways to let go of?” Guru ji spoke to them in detail: “to be jealous with everyone; the items and pleasures of the world should be taken away from all and given to them; seeing wealth of others, being in pain; seeing everyone as an enemy; not doing good with anyone else; this is how the Manmukh is. Let go of this from your heart. The second thing they have is ego. They are uncompassionating towards all. If they see someone as lesser than them, they don’t give them any wisdom. Instead, they laugh at them with ego. They say: “he is not as smart as me.” The third characteristic is to slander. Let this go! Never do this! If someone is bigger than the Manmukh, they are praised in front of them, the Manmukh can’t tolerate this. They burn in jealousy. They say: “I have seen him. He is nothing.” This is one what they say. If they see someone equal to them, they are jealous of them and say: “that person has no qualities.” The fourth characteristic: is being stubborn. They don’t listen to anyone giving them wisdom. They speak in a stubborn way and try to give their own wisdom. These are the characteristics of the Manmukh. Let these go. Let them go like leaves are dropped by the trees in Autumn. Respect the Sikhs like the Guru, with humility. Do the work of Dharma. Eat after sharing, always.” Hearing the wisdom of the Guru, the Sikhs accepted the qualities. They began to live in the world that gave them Mukti.
Bhai Sheeha ji and Bhai Gajjan ji, two brothers came to the Satguru’s shelter. They did Guru ji’s Darshan and bowed to Guru ji’s lotus feet. They stood with their hands folded and said: “Prabhoo ji, give us the 4 Padarthas (Dharam, Arth, Kaam, and Moksha). Cut our bonds of being born and dying. There is nobody like you. You give whatever one asks from you. We request you for all this. Please complete it, Sri Gunkhaani.” Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “do the Simran of Vahiguru with focus and love. You will get the 4 Padarthas.” The Sikhs said: “please tell us the meanings of Vahiguru. Give us wisdom and make us understand.” Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji said the meanings of Vahiguru: “the wise ones do the Simran of Vahiguru. The Vava was taken from Vasudev and Haha from Har. Gaga was taken from Gobind. Rara was taken from Ram the great. In one name you do the chant of 4 names. It is really radiant. Listen to the second meaning: doing its Simran, the troubles and pain are all gone. “Vahi” means amazing, by whose reality the universe was created. That awareness is what creating the universe. It can only be understood by experience. Listen to the meaning of Guru: “Gu” means darkness and “Ru” mean light. The body is destructible. It is the darkness. The Chetan is the light. For this reason, the Name is Vahiguru. Chanting it will give you the 4 Padarthas: Dharam Arth Kaam and Moksh.” The Sikhs asked: “the ones who sing Vahiguru, how do they get the 4 Padarthas?” Guru ji said: “by going to the Satsangat, each step is the rewards of 1 Asmedh Yagna. To obtain the wealth, people do many efforts. That wealth is given to the Bhagat of the Hari by thousands of people. They bow and give them money. They want the Bhagat to pray for their well-being. The wishes of the Bhagats, Sri Kartaar completes it. Understand the meaning of Vahiguru, the darkness of Agyaan is destroyed. The 4 Padarthas are supported by Naam. Do the Simran and be free of pain.” Hearing the wisdom of Sri Guru ji, the Sikhs did what they were told. They bathed at Amritvela and recited Shabads with love. They worked all day and served guests. They breathed “Vahi” in and “Guru” out. They spent their time like this. They made Panchamrit on good days. They spent their time like this. They had wishes to do good deeds.
Bhai Sheeha ji had a daughter who was about to be married. Many types of food were prepared just a few days before the marriage. The food was made with sugar and ghee. They were kept in the home after being prepared. The Sikhs going to Kartarpur came to Bhai Sheeha ji’s home. The food that was made for the Bharaat, Bhai Sheeha ji gave that food to the visiting Sikhs. There was a lot of Sangat in the home. The pakvaans were all eaten. The next day, the Bharaat was to come. The Sangat that stayed the night, left in the morning, saying the Guru’s name. Bhai Sheeha ji’s wife got worried. There was no food left in the home. She said: “what will the Bharaat eat? We can’t prepare anything that quickly. How can our honour be protected? The whole world will slander us.” Bhai Sheeha ji saw his wife worried. He gave her hope: “have faith on the Satguru. Don’t think of anything else. The Prabhoo will protect our honour. He will protect us, seeing us as his servants.” As they thought about this, the Bharaat came to their home. The Bharaat met and set up their Dhera. The wife of Bhai Sheeha ji saw this and was worried. She was upset. She said: “what will we feed them? Many people came in the Bharaat.” Bhai Sheeha ji got up and did an Ardaas by thinking of the feet of the Satguru: “you have protected the honour of the Sikhs before. We are under the shelter of your Lotus feet.” He opened the doors of his top floor terrace. He saw a lot of food there. The Bharaat was seated in lines and served food in a good way. The food was delicious. Everyone was happy. The Bharaat stayed for 5 days. There was no shortage of food. Many types of Pakvaans were made. The Bharaat ate with joy. Bhai Sheeha ji gave a lot of dowries and gave leave to the Bharaat. People were amazed to see the wedding. Everyone got together and said: “the Guru kept the honour of his Sikhs.” Many people saw this and became devoted. The Prema Bhagti spread in the world.
One day, the Gunkhaani was sitting with compassion in his eyes. Bhai Firna Khera ji and Bhai Jodh ji came with a wish. They bowed to Guru ji’s feet and sat down near him. They folded their hands and did an Ardaas: “we come to your sanctuary. Give us your good wisdom by which we can be blessed. We wish for Sikhi in our hearts. We don’t want to be effected by death again.” Prabhoo ji said: “the ones whose minds are humble, they receive Sikhi. Whatever Seva you can do, do it of the Sikhs that come to you. Do it with love. Wash their feet and drink the water. Make food for them. Bathe at Amritvela and practice the Shabad. Make your mind humble and go to the Satsangat. Listen to the Shabad of the Guru with love, eagerness and focus. See the Vahiguru as the Master. See yourselves as his faulted servants. Accept the Gurbani after listening to it, if you wish to cross this world.” The wisdom of Sikhi was received by the Sikhs. They did as they were instructed. The problem of being born and dying, they broke that and they were blessed. Many people were given wisdom along with Bibek. For the sake that this Granth does not get bigger, the Parasangs of the Sikhs were mentioned in a summary form.
2-44 Seeing the Love of the Sikhs/ The Reward of a Sadhoo’s Darshan
I bow to Sharda who illuminates wisdom into the heart. Please be compassionate and complete the history of Sri Guru ji.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Listen, oh Head of the Trehans, to the Katha of the Prabhoo. The River of Sikhi spread into the world. The minds of the Sikhs were fish who never wanted to part with this river. They all did the practice of the Shabad. They did the Simran of Satnam. It illuminated everywhere.
One day, to see the love of the Sikhs, Sri Guru ji left from Kartarpur and took me with him. We came to a city where a Tarkhan Sikh lived. He made a living with less. He served Sikhs when they came to him. He made whatever food he had. Sometimes he had food in the evening but nothing for the morning. He and his family never ate a full meal. They gave it to the Sikhs. If the Sikhs would come and he had nothing, he would go to the other Sikhs’ homes and ask for food. He never asked for himself though, only for Sikh guests. He did what it took to get food for the visiting Sikhs.
We reached the home of the Tarkhan. The family came to bow to Guru ji. The Sikh said to his wife: “prepare food quickly.” The wife said: “you know everything. I would make food if there were some raw foods at home.” The Tarkhan went around the city to ask for food but nobody gave him anything. The people said: “he makes the excuse of asking for Sikh guests when he actually takes it for himself.” He got nothing that day. He came home empty-handed. That day, the Raja had held a Mal Akhara, wrestling show. The Tarkhan was worried: “how will I feed food to Guru ji? My life will be a disgrace if I can’t give food to Guru ji.” Many people were going to the Mal Akhara. The Tarkhan asked one person: “where are you all going?” The person said: “the king has held a Mal Akhara. There will be a reward for 1,000 Rupees for the winner who defeats the wrestler. If you lose, you get half the reward.” The Tarkhan was happy to hear this. He headed towards the Mal Akhara.
The Raja and the wrestlers were gathered in the Akhara. The Dhols were playing. Many had gathered. When the Tarkhan entered the Akhara, everyone laughed at him. They said: “the wrestler is really strong. He will grind you to dust. You are like an egotistical deer wishing to fight the lion. What are you thinking? You wish to die?” They stopped him but he didn’t listen. He said: “if I die, there’s nothing better than that. If my damage is good for someone else, that’s great.” When he came to the Mal Akhara, the wrestler said: “why are you calling your death?” The Sikh heard this and told him everything: “saints have come to my home but I have no food to feed them. I have come to fight for them. If I die, I will be in peace.” The wrestler said: “very good! You are wise. You are a great saint. You are putting your life on the line for others. Fight with me without fear.” Both of the men met in wrestling. The wrestler fell on purpose. He knew that the Tarkhan was fighting for the good of others. He didn’t use his strength at all. When the wrestler fell, the people were shocked to see this. The Raja gave beautiful clothes to the Tarkhan along with 1,000 Rupees. The wrestler received Gyaan because he destroyed his attachment and desires. When he fell, his desires fell too.
The Sikh came home with the money and had food made. He had Guru ji seated on a high place. He washed Guru ji’s feet and drank the Charanamrit. As soon as he drank that, he gained the awareness of the 3 Loks. Guru ji looked at him and gave him Mukti. The whole family was given Mukti. Guru ji ate the food made with love. Prabhoo ji’s praises spread in the 10 directions. Guru ji stayed the night in the home of the Tarkhaan and left the next morning.
Guru ji went to another village where a poor Sikh stayed. The Sikh came to do Guru ji’s Darshan, outside of the village, under a tree. He bowed and said: “please come to my home. Your feet will make my home pure. Your words will wash our sins away.” Guru ji saw the love in the Sikh and went to his home. The poor Sikh and his wife had one son. They were hit hard with poverty. They could only eat one meal a day. They remained hungry for a second meal. If they ate one day, they didn’t get anything the second day. They didn’t have much furniture or pots and pans. The Sikh sold some belongings to bring food for Guru ji. After eating the food, Guru ji stayed another day. On the second day, the poor Sikh cut his hair, made it into a rope and sold it. He bought food with it and gave it to his wife. He said: “prepare this food.” The wife brought water and cleaned the kitchen. She brought firewood and lit a fire. She went outside of the home for some task. She sat her child down there near the stove. The child fell into the stove. The fire burnt the child’s body. When the woman came back, she saw her dead burnt son. She remained quiet as she didn’t want the saints in her home to hear. She didn’t want Guru ji to be disturbed or to leave without eating: “we would become sinners if he leaves without eating.” She wrapped up her dead son’s body in a blanket and placed him in their room. She came to the kitchen and continued cooking. She didn’t tell her husband about anything. The wise woman cooked the food and called Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji to eat. Guru ji was seated in the clean place. When the food was placed in front of Guru ji, Sri Guru ji said: “you have a beautiful son. I don’t see him in the home now.” The woman said: “he is sleeping. He was playing so he got tired and went to sleep. He won’t wake up now.” Guru ji said: “listen wise woman, wake him up now. He will eat with us.” The woman stayed quiet. Satguru ji spoke again: “tell me what is the boy’s name?” The Sikh said: “his name is Lala.” Sri Prabhoo ji called out for the boy: “come Lala! Come and eat.” The boy heard Guru ji’s voice and was alive again. He got up and came to Guru ji. Guru ji fed the child from his own plate. The mother was really happy, seeing her child eating. She told her husband everything. The faith in Guru ji the couple had got deeper. The couple bowed to Guru ji’s feet. They saw Guru ji as the great and complete being in their minds.
The next day, there was no food again. Guru ji continued staying there. The couple was worried. The Sikh was about to take the child to be sold in the market, when Guru ji saw him. He said: “where are you taking your child? What task do you have with the child?” The Sikh said: “you are omniscient. Oh Master, why are you asking me? You know everything.” Guru ji called the boy to him. He held the boy’s arm and said: “your parents are taking you to the market to be sold as a slave. You should serve your master well. You will have to grind the flour, wave the fan and massage his feet. You can’t disobey him. This is the way of the servant.” The boy folded his hands and said: “I will obey my master.” The Compassionate One heard this and said a Shabad:
Maaroo Mahalla 1..
I am Lala, your purchased slave, and so I am called fortunate.
I was sold at the store for the Guru’s Word; whatever You link me to, to that I am linked. ||1||
What cleverness can Your Lala have with You? The command of the Master cannot be reversed. ||1||Rahao||
My mother is Your slave, and my father is Your slave; I am the child of Your slaves.
My slave mother dances, and my slave father sings; I practice your Bhagti, O my Sovereign Lord. ||2||
If You wish to drink water, then I shall get it for You; if You wish to eat, I shall grind the wheat for You.
I wave the fan over You, and massage Your feet; I continue to chant Your Name. ||3||
I have been deceitful, but Nanak is Your slave; please forgive me; this is Your glorious greatness.
Since the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages, You have been the merciful and generous Lord. Without You, liberation cannot be attained. ||4||6||
(SGGS 991)
After saying this, the Prabhoo looked up at the family with his divine vision. He destroyed all of their pains and problems. Guru ji hugged the little boy and picked him up in his lap. Guru ji gave them the 9 Niddhis in their home. They received the 4 Padarthas in a second. Guru ji gave the 3 people Jeevan Mukti. After blessing them, the Prabhoo ji then left from there.
We went to another village. There was a Sikh that lived there. If a saint went to his home, he would serve them with love. He would then ask the saint a question: “what is the reward of meeting a Sadhoo?” To complete his desire, the Gareeb Nivaaj came to his home. The Sikh bowed to Guru ji and had him sit inside with joy. He served Guru ji with a lot of love. He was drenched in Prema Bhagti. He then asked Guru ji: “what is the reward of meeting a Sadhoo? I have asked many people this question but nobody gave me a good answer. They told me in many ways but I wasn’t convinced. My answer wasn’t given. You are the complete Satguru. Please answer my question.” The Compassionate One said: “go to the great ruins outside your village. The jungle. There is a tree there. Sit under there and say Vahiguru. You will be satisfied there.”
The Sikh heard this and went to the jungle. He saw the tree as he was told and sat under it. He said Vahiguru and looked up. He saw two crows on the tree. The crows became herons, right before his eyes. He sat for about 2 hours and came back home. He told Guru ji: “I went where you told me to go. I didn’t meet anyone who would answer my question.” Prabhoo ji said: “go again in the morning and get your answer.” The Sikh obeyed and went again in the morning. As he looked up, the herons became cranes before his eyes. He came back and told Guru ji: “I saw crows turn to herons and today they became cranes. I didn’t get an answer. I am in doubt still.” Sri Guru ji said: “go again tomorrow. You will get your answer. Go see where the cranes are.” In the morning the Sikh went again. When the cranes saw the Sikh, they became humans. They sat near the Sikh. They came over and said: “Pairi Pana (we touch your feet).” As the Sikh sat down with them, he said to the two humans: “what is the reward of meeting a Sadhoo? Please tell me.” The humans answered the Sikh: “did you still not understand? We were crows before. We saw you and became herons. We then became cranes the next day we saw you. You gave us your Darshan again today after being in the presence of the Prabhoo and now we are man and woman. You blessed us. Think about what the reward of meeting a Sadhoo is. Your Satguru is Dhan! Doing his Darshan the sinners become pure. We wish to do his Darshan as well. We wish to rid ourselves of attachment and doubts.” The Sikh was happy and took the man and woman home. They came to Satguru ji and bowed with humility. Guru ji cut the bonds of attachment for all of them. Guru ji said: “are you satisfied now?” The Sikh folded his hands and said: “when the Karta Purakh comes to your home and meets you, why wouldn’t one be satisfied?” The Compassionate Prabhoo was happy and said: “your bonds of being born and dying are now broken. They are broken as you served the saints. You will live out your destiny and then go to the place of the Prabhoo after.” After giving this boon to the Sikh, Guru ji travelled on. Meditating on him destroys the sins. Guru ji came back to Kartarpur. The servants and Sikhs bowed to him. Guru ji didn’t go anywhere else again. He remained in Kartarpur. The people did his Darshan and had their sins washed away.
2-45 Saido Gheyo/ Sikhi/ Ateet/ Ghrist Dharma
I bow to thee, I bow to thee, over and over again I bow to thee, oh beautiful words of the Satguru. By listening to the words, the troubles leave and one knows the real form.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, listen to the Katha ahead which gives joy to the listeners. Guru ji had come back to Kartarpur. He didn’t go anywhere else after that. At around 2am Guru ji would wake up and go outside. He bathed in the Airavati (Ravi) and sat down on the shores in Samadhi. When it was around an hour and a half to sunrise, Guru ji would come and sit in the Dharamsala. Keertan would happen along with the chant of Sri Satnam. Love would come into the hearts of those who did the Simran.
A Sikh named Bhai Saido Gheyo ji lived among the Sangat. His heart was filled with faith. He had a doubt about something he saw about Guru ji. He couldn’t see the deeper meaning of something that Guru ji did. He saw Guru ji go outside at around 2am and bathe. He thought to himself: “Guru ji probably serves Varun Devata, sitting by the shore. That’s how he is able to fulfil his wishes. He has done a lot of Seva of Varun Dev. That’s why his powers are so great. He got all of his powers by making Varun Dev happy. He received the status of Guru of the World from Varun. I will serve Varun Dev as well. I will receive powers as well.” He thought of this in his heart.
The next day, when it was 2 am, Bhai Saido went to the Ravi, a little before Guru ji had come. He met a person on the way. The person had a fish in his hand. Bhai Saido saw him and asked: “who are you and where are you going? At night, only thieves and Sikhs are up and about.” The person heard this and said: “don’t see me as a thief. I am the Master of all the Rivers. My name is Varun Devata. I went to go to do the Pooja of Sri Guru ji. I do his Pooja everyday after doing his Darshan.” Surprised, Bhai Saido ji said: “I was thinking something else. I thought Sri Guru ji did your Seva and that’s how he got his great powers. I thought he got the Riddhis and Siddhis from you. This is what I thought. I was going to do your Seva. You met me and told me the truth. If you go to do his Pooja, then why should I be in doubt?” Varun Dev heard this and said: “Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is the treasure of all the virtues. He took an Avatar to save the people. The Sri Kartar took on a human body. Have deep faith in him. Don’t doubt him. Serve his Lotus feet.” Bhai Saido Gheyo ji heard this and ran to where the Prabhoo was sitting. He bowed to Guru ji and sat down near him. The Light of the Bedis saw the Sikh and said to him: “why did you come during the night? You usually come during sunrise.” Bhai Saido ji told Guru ji everything in a humble way: “Prabhoo ji, I didn’t know your greatness. I was unwise and in doubt. I know your bright radiance now.” Sri Gunkhaani heard this and uttered a Shabad in a sweet way which was later written by Guru Angad Dev ji:
Sri Mukhvaak..
Salok M:2..
The 8 watches/portions of the day (Twenty-four hours), the eight Khands (bends in the body), and the ninth Kand, is the body; destroy these concepts.
Within the body are the nine treasures of the One Name of the Lord; the wise ones seek it from within.
The ones blessed with the karma of good actions praise the Lord. O Nanak, they make the Guru their Peer.
In the fourth watch of the day (early morning hours), the eager ones (the conscious ones) arise.
They are friends with the rivers; the True Name is in their minds and on their lips
The Amrit is distributed there, and those with good karma receive this gift.
The bodies are tightened and become golden, and take on the radiant brightness.
If the Jeweller (Guru) casts His Glance of Grace, they are not placed in the fire again.
Throughout the other seven watches of the day (the time other than Amritvela), it is good to speak the Truth, and sit with the wise and educated ones (Gyaanis).
There, sin and virtue are discussed, and the capital of falsehood is decreased.
There, the counterfeits are cast aside, and the genuine are cheered.
Speech is useless, O Nanak, pain and pleasure are in the power of our Lord and Master. ||1||
(SGGS 146)
The Sikh heard this and had a deep faith. He began to do the Seva of Guru ji. He began to write Gurbani and pondered on it. He listened with love and then memorized the Bani. He sat in the Dharamsala with Sri Guru ji everyday. The Keertan happened with a lot of love.
People from many lands would come to Guru ji after hearing his praises. They came with love in their hearts. The ones that came with wishes, their wishes were fulfilled. The ones that had no desires, they received Gyaan and bliss. There was a crowd everyday in Kartarpur. A lot of Langer was made all the time. As Guru ji was sitting one day, a person came. He folded his hands, bowed and said: “should I be a Sikh or a Fakir? Should I follow the Ghrist Dharma? What is your will, please tell me so I may follow that. I have heard of your great praises and so I came to you for my answers.” The Compassionate One then spoke: “first do this: take my letter and leave today. A Sikh of mine lives in a village. Go and ask for the Sikh and go to his home. Take 200 Rupees from the Sikh and then eat food from his home. When you come back, I will give you your answer.”
The person obeyed and took Guru ji’s Hukamnama letter. He went to the Sikh’s village and found his home. The Sikh was really poor. He had food only sometimes. The Sikh had a good wife and a daughter. The person gave the Sikh Guru ji’s Hukamnama. The Sikh was filled with love and bowed his head. He had the person sit with respect. He washed his feet and then said: “eat food. You travelled a long distance. You must be tired.” The person said: “Guru ji commanded me not to eat till I take the money from you, as mentioned in the Hukamnama. I can eat after.” The Sikh went quiet hearing this. Worry flowed like a river in his mind. He thought to himself: “how can I give him the money? What should I do? I wish for my Sikhi to remain today. There is nothing in the home that I can sell in the market for money.” For his daughter, a Shahukaar was ready to pay 500 Rupees for her but the Sikh had previously refused him, seeing the money as sinful. When an hour passed by, the wife of the Sikh spoke: “what are you worried about? Whatever is in our home was given to us by Satguru ji. Sell our daughter and get the 200 Rupees. You can give the money to Satguru ji. If we would take the money for ourselves, then it would be a sin. For the good of others, it is not a sin. Go and do this quickly. Keep your promise of Sikhi.” Hearing the advice of his wife, the Sikh agreed and went to the home of the Shahukaar. He said to the Shahukaar: “give me 250 Rupees and marry my daughter.” The Shahukaar said: “take more. I have a lot of money in my home. Your poverty will be gone forever. You will be in joy. Don’t doubt this.” The Sikh said: “I don’t have any other wish. I just want what I ask for.” The Sikh took 250 Rupees and gave it to the person in his home. He gave 200 as per Guru ji’s Hukamnama and 50 to the person for his gift. They all ate food in joy. The person was amazed at the Sikh. He went back to Guru ji after eating.
On the way back, it was noon. He saw a Sadhoo and sat with him. He was really tired when he met the Sadhoo. A big Shahukaar came and saw the Sadhoo and the person. He gave an expensive shawl to the Sadhoo and placed some sweet foods in front of him. He bowed with love in his heart. The Shahukaar gave money to the Sadhoo. The Sadhoo was unaffected by anything. The Shahukaar left. Another traveller came to the same place. The traveller took the shawl, money and food and ran off. The Sadhoo didn’t say anything. He saw the gifts given and the theft as the same. He saw the giver and the thief as the same. He didn’t judge any of them. He didn’t say anything good or bad. When the gifts came, the Sadhoo was not happy. He wasn’t in sorrow when they were stolen. The person sat and saw the whole drama. He then got up and went back to the Prabhoo. As he walked, it was evening. There was no village nearby. It was just jungle. He sat under a tree. Upon the tree, a bird couple lived there. When the night was just 2 hours young, the female bird said to the male bird: “we have a guest. We should give him food.” The male bird flew to the city. He brought a stick with fire back. He gave it to the Sikh right away. They had gathered some dried grass and lit it with the fire. The female bird jumped into the fired and the male bird followed. They gave their lives to feed their meat to the person. The person saw this and ate the birds. The birds were Sikhs in their previous births. Because of some Karma, they had to become birds. They still had their wisdom though. The gave their lives and freed themselves. Sri Guru ji gave them Mukti for their act. When the person ate the meat, he was really surprised. In the morning, he continued his travels.
The person arrived in Kartarpur and placed the money in front of Guru ji. He folded his hands and bowed. He wished for wisdom. Prabhoo ji said: “are you now convinced of your questions?” The person said: “I didn’t understand anything. Please tell me.” Sri Prabhoo ji said: “the Sikh that you saw; he saw himself as the Guru’s own and sold his daughter to give money. If you wish to be a Sikh then be like him. You will get the highest Mukti then. If you wish to be a Fakir then let go of joy and sorrow. The Sadhoo you saw on the way, be like him if you want to be a Fakir. If you receive something, don’t be happy. If you lose it, don’t be in sorrow. If you wish to enter the Ghrist Dharma, then take on the characteristics of the birds you saw. For the sake of guests, don’t think of your own pain. They gave their lives for you in the blink of an eye. Think of all three of these ways in a good way. Wherever your faith lies, do as you wish.” The person lost his patience as he didn’t think he was able to do any 3 of those things. He folded his hands and said: “I find all 3 ways very difficult. I won’t be able to follow any one path. The ones who do this, they are great. Even though I can’t do them, I still came to your shelter. To save people like me is your Dharma. To purify the sinners, the whole world says, this is your promise. Please be compassionate and save me. I am not capable of anything. Please protect me.” When Guru ji heard this, he said: “be without deceit and work for a living according to the Dharma. Destroy your ego and serve the Sikhs with humility. You will be blessed slowly.” The person heard this and did as he was told. He did Seva with love. As time went on, he did the Simran of the Satnam.
