2-36 Kandahar/ Yaarvali/ Khatri/ Shah Sharaf/ Maan Chand

Do the Simran of the feet of Sri Guru ji and look for your real form everyday.  You will feel the Sahij and joy.  You will be saved from the blind well of the world.

Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..

Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, listen to the pleasant Katha of Guru Nanak Dev ji.  Bhai Shazada ji and his family settled near the Afghanistan and Pakistan border while his brother Bhai Razada ji stayed with the Gurughar to do Keertan.  Their descendants still do Keertan in the Guru’s Darbar.  Some have been blessed with the Khanda ki Pahul.  The Compassionate One then went to Kandahar.  A Mughal named Yaarvali lived there.  The Bhagwant went to meet him.  Yaarvali asked Guru ji: “tell me what is your name?”  Guru ji responded: “my name is Nanak Nirankari.”  Yaarvali said: “what does your name mean?”  Guru ji said: “I am a man of Khuddah.”  Yaarvali said: “who is your Peer?”  Guru ji said: “the One, Khuddah is my Peer.  There is no other Peer of mine.  The whole world is his Mureed, follower.”  Yaarvali heard this and was blessed.  He was in bliss.  He placed his head on Guru ji’s feet and said: “you are Khuddah in a human body.  Destroy the pain of being born and dying for me.  I will follow you.  You are my Peer now.  I am your Mureed from now on.”  Guru ji said: “what is your name?  Why do you want to be my Mureed?”  Yaarvali said: “my name is Yaarvali.  I want to be your Mureed because I want Mukti.”  Seeing his faith, Guru ji gave him wisdom to bless him.  He stayed him for one night.  Guru ji guided him with wisdom and gave him Gyaan all night long to achieve Brahmgyaan.  Guru ji then got ready to leave the next day.  Yaarvali bowed to him.  He was blessed in one night.  He became detached to the world.  He lost his senses and only heard the Naam.  He became a Mastana for the Naam of Khuddah.  He couldn’t see or hear anything else in the world.  He was one with the One.  Guru ji gave him hope and left.

Guru ji then met a Khatri.  There was a lot of snow there.  The Khatri was breaking the snow to make water.  He wanted to bathe in the melted water.  To bless him, Guru ji came to him.  The Khatri had good Karma.  Guru ji asked him: “what is your Varan?  What is your name?  You are trying to bathe in the bitter cold.”  There are 3 reasons for a person to bathe 1. To do Simran.  2. For other people.  3. To Eat food.  Guru ji noticed that the Khatri was bathing because he was preparing to sit in Simran.  When the Khatri finished his bath, he came out of the small pool of cold water and did the Darshan of Guru ji.  His doubts were all destroyed.  His mind was pure.  He bowed to Guru ji.  He saw Guru ji as a saint.  He understood Guru ji’s glory.  He folded his hands and said: “I wanted to meet a saint from a very long time.  I met you and now I have faith.  There is love in my mind after doing your Darshan.  I can feel it.  I received the reward of my good deeds.  You, the complete Saint, have come to me.”  The Gunkhaani saw the person’s love and gave him the wisdom of Bhagti in his heart.  He completed his effort.  The love of Prabhoo’s Simran arose in his heart.  He asked Guru ji to come to his home.  He made him eat food and kept Guru for 3 days.

Now listen to Yaarvali’s Katha.  Yaarvali had a friend named Sheikh Sharaf.  They both knew each other well and often spoke of Gyaan.  After Sri Guru ji met Yaarvali and left, Sheikh Sharaf came to Yaarvali’s home.  He saw Yaarvali in a Mastana form.  His eyes were intoxicated with the Love of Khuddah.  Sheikh Sharaf asked Yaarvali: “how did you become a Deewana?  You seem to have forgotten the tasks of the world.  I saw you just yesterday and today you are something else.  I’ve never seen you in so much bliss and peace.  Who did you meet?  Who did this to you?”  Yaarvali said to his friend: “I am the Mureed of the One.  The Fakir Peer is Khuddah.  His Darshan has done this to me.  I am intoxicated with bliss after meeting him.  He looked upon me with compassion.  He gave my Gyaan and took my attachment away.”  The Sheikh said: “where did the Fakir go?  Show me where he went.  I want to be like you.”  Yaarvali said: “think of him with Love.  He will come to you himself.”  Sheikh Sharaf was determined.  He sat down where he was.  He sat down in Yaarvali’s home and said: “when he comes, only then will I get up.”  He used to only come for a little while but today he didn’t go home.  He wanted to see Guru ji.

Four days passed.  Sri Guru ji then came with compassion.  Yaarvali saw Guru ji coming towards his home.  He got up with love.  He bowed to Guru ji’s lotus feet.  He had him sit in his home.  Sheikh Sharaf spoke: “why are you wearing a Kaphni?”  Guru ji said: “this Kaphni is the fear of Khuddah.  I am dead while being alive.  Recognize the Khuddah which gives bliss.  The ones who drown, their bodies floats on the water.  The body does not drown again, whether in the river or the ocean.  They always float.  That is how the dead-living are.  They are not affected by the pain of death.  They don’t care for others to know them.  Become the dust of everyone’s feet.”  Sharaf asked: “what is the Godhri (the cloak of Fakirs)?  What is the Karma of the Bairagi?”  Guru ji said: “I will tell you: the pin to make the Godhri is the Santokh (contentment).  The thread is the Sangat of the elder saints.  The sewing is to accept the Brahm as the only existence.  Let go of your ego and put it around your neck.  You won’t be afraid of the winter frost of the Jumms then.  The person will be a Bairagi without any faults who is not attached to the Maya.  See the One Khuddah in all.  Don’t let the vices come into the mind.  Let go of the bounds.  Remain bondless.  The saints call him a Bairagi.”  Sharaf became humble.  He bowed his head and did not lift it up.  He said: “I am your Mureed.  You are my Peer of Peers.  I don’t see a Master like you even if I look throughout the world.”  Guru ji raised his head and said: “let go of any pride.  Do the Simran of Satnam with love.  The Khuddah will look upon you with compassion.”  When Guru ji touched Sharaf’s head with his hands, the Love of the Naam came into his heart.  Guru ji said: “go to your home.  Keep Khuddah’s Bandagi in your heart forever.”  The Sheikh folded his hands and said: “when will you give me your Darshan again?”  Guru ji said: “remember me in your heart with love.  This is my Darshan.  If you wish to see me, then go to Bhai Shazada ji in Khurma.  He is the son of Bhai Mardana ji and is a Gyaani.  You can do his Darshan.  He is wise.  It is like doing my Darshan.  You will be rewarded by doing his Darshan in the same way as doing my Darshan.”  Sharaf obeyed Guru ji’s command and went to his home.  He went with love.  When Guru ji was ready to leave, Yaarvali bowed to Guru ji’s feet and said: “when will you come to meet me again?  Take me with you.  I can’t be separated from you.”  Sri Guru ji said: “meeting me is as of such: let go of your ego.  Understand that you must stay here.  This is my command.”

Guru ji, the Compassionate One, then left Kandahar and went to another village.  Guru ji met a Pathaan, who saw the Prabhoo and said: “where are you from and who are you?  Why are you sitting here?  Do you have a task with someone?  Tell me the truth.”  The Giver of Joy said: “we are the people of Khuddah.  I have a task with a person.  I will meet him and leave.”  The Khan said: “who is the person you have some work with?”  Guru ji said: “he is of the Khatri caste.  His father was Khan Chand.  His name is Maan Chand.  I have a task with him.”  The Khan said: “his home is in the village.  You can go to his home and meet him.  Why are you sitting in the ruins?  Your personality is very nice.  I can see that.”  Sri Guru said: “I won’t go to his home.  He will come to meet me here.”  The Khan heard this and went to the village.  He gave the Khatri the news: “there are 2 Fakirs sitting outside of the village, under a tree.  When I asked them why they are here, they said: “we have some work with Maan Chand Khatri.”  I told him that I would take them there but they didn’t want to come into the village.  You should go and see them.”  Maan Chand said: “I don’t know anyone like that.  I don’t know any Fakir.  I’ve never met them before.”  The Khan said: “go and see them.  There’s no fault in seeing a Sadhoo.”  Maan Chand thought about this and picked up 2 Sers of dry fruits.

Where Sri Guru ji, the Gunkhaani, was sitting, the fortunate one, Maan Chand, came there.  He folded his hands and bowed.  He sat down as he placed the dry fruits in front of Guru ji.  Sri Guru ji spoke sweet and soft words: “Maan Chand, are you well?”  Maan Chand was surprised and said: “since when have you known me?  I have never met you before nor do I recognize you.  From which land are you from and what is your from?  What task do you have with me?  Please tell me.”  Guru ji said: “I am from the land of Beghumpura- the place of no sorrow.  My form is the Ikankaar.  My name is Nanak Nirankari.  This is Bala.”  Maan Chand heard this and said: “there is no place like that in this world.  You speak differently, things which I don’t understand.  I can’t tell what your form is.  I am surprised to see you.”  Guru ji said: “there is all the joy in my words.  My good words can’t be understood by the worldly people.  It’s good that you don’t see these things in the world.  This world is an illusion.  It’s a myth.  It is of no use.  The people of the world hold on to the world and remain indulged in it.  My land is really high.  If someone knows of it, they are not in pain again.  When you hear of that place, Maya (everything that is within the senses of the Munn and Bhuddi, along with the Gyaan Indrees) and attachment runs away.  What is away from Munn, Bhuddi and the Indrees; that is the Parmeshwar Brahm.  If you earn this, it will be with you.  That place is in the Parlok.  There is no worry, sorrow or pain there.  Whoever earns this is wise.”  After saying this, Guru ji uttered a Shabad which gave Gyaan to Maan Chand along with the highest status:

Tilang Mahalla 1 Ghar 2..

Ik Oankaar Satgur Prasaad..

The One who created the world watches it; what more can we say, O brother?  He Himself knows, and He Himself does everything; who laid out the garden of the world. ||1||

Savor the Raisa (the royal story), the Raisa of the Beloved Lord, which brings an everlasting bliss. ||Rahao||

She who does not enjoy the Love of her Husband Lord, shall come to regret and repent in the end.  She wrings her hands, and bangs her head, when the night of her life passes away. ||2||

Nothing comes from regret (nothing is achieved), when the game is already finished (when life is over).  She shall have the opportunity to enjoy her Beloved, only when her turn comes again. ||3||

The good brides who have attained her Husband Lord – they are so much better than I am.  I have none of their merits or virtues; whom should I blame? ||4||

The sisters who have enjoyed their Husband Lord, I shall go and ask them.  I will touch their feet, and ask them to show me the Path. ||5||

Understand the Hukam of His Command and, oh Nanak, apply the Fear of God as her sandalwood oil; she charms her Beloved with her virtue, and so obtains Him. ||6||

She who connects with her Beloved from her heart, remains united with Him; this is truly called union.  As much as she may long for Him, she shall not meet Him through mere words. ||7||

As metal melts into metal again, so does conscious melt into conscious.  By the Guru’s Grace, this understanding is obtained; then one can experience the feeling. ||8||

There may be an orchard of betel nut trees (which is used for medicines and other expensive things) in the garden, but the donkey does not appreciate its value.  If someone savors a fragrance, then he can recognize its flower. ||9||

The one drinks the undrinkable, O Nanak, their doubts are destroyed.  They spontaneously become One and achieve to immortal status. ||10||1||

(SGGS 724 – 725)

Maan Chand heard the Shabad and spoke in bliss: “the Jeev in this world, how can he be blessed?”  Guru ji said: “the Jeev can be blessed if he remembers the Kartaar with every breath.  Without the Naam, no one can be blessed.”  Maan Chand asked with love: “oh Prabhoo, tell me how I can do Simran all the time.  I don’t want to forget him, ever.”  Guru ji said: “don’t doubt this.  If someone is hungry or naked, don’t keep a doubt, don’t worry.  Just don’t forget the Naam.”  When Maan Chand heard this, he fell at Guru ji’s feet.  Guru ji held a stick.  He gave that stick to Maan Chand.  Maan Chand took that stick and put it to his head.  As soon as the stick touched his head, the pain of being born and dying all went away.  He experienced the deep and unlimited bliss.  He became a Mastana in love.  He became a complete Brahmgyaani.  He became a great being.  He folded his hands and said: “oh Master, this stick is great!  It gave me Mukti.  I know this now.  It was like being woken up from a very scary nightmare.”  Guru ji said: “the troubles of the world, listen Maan Chand, my friend, this stick is touched with the Naam.  Touching the Naam, it makes one Mukat.”  The ways of being born and dying were destroyed.  In this way, Maan Chand was blessed.  Guru ji then travelled on.

2-37 The Peers of Multan/ Shamas Tabrez

Oh mind, let go of the vices and pleasures which have made you wander through countless lives.  Now, go to the shelter of the Satguru.  You will receive bliss and Bibek (the wisdom to understand the difference between infinite and finite; truth and myth).

Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..

Oh supremely pure Guru Angad Dev ji, listen to the Katha, as this amazing history happened.  After leaving Maan Chand, we came to Multan.  Shamas Tabrez was there along with many Peers.  The Flag of the Bedis wanted to meet them.  Although Shamas Tabrez had lived in the 12th Century, Guru ji’s meetings transcends time, place and dimensions.  Shamas Tabrez’s grave is located in Multan.  His moto was “Un-Ul-Haque,” meaning “I am the Truth.”  This also reflects the Mahavaakya of the Yajur Veda: “Ahang Brahmasmi,” which means “I am the Brahm.”  Shamas Tabrez is believed to be Mansoor in his previous birth and Sarmad in his birth after.  Guru ji wanted to give them his wisdom.  This wisdom saves the Jeev Aatma.  Where Shamas Tabrez lived, the Master of the World came and sat there.  When the Peers found out of Guru ji’s arrival, they all decided with each other: “he has won all of the biggest places and defeated the biggest scholars.  He made the Kabbah move with his feet.  He is powerful and a great converser.  Nobody can stand in front of him.  We can’t face him in debate.  We should request him to leave.”  After deciding this, the Peers filled a pot of milk to the top and brought it to Guru ji.  They wanted to signal Guru ji that Multan was already filled with Peers.  Just as the pot was filled to the top, leaving no more room to add anymore milk, that is how Multan was; that no more Peers could settle here.  They signaled him to go to some other place.  When the pot of milk was presented to Guru ji, he understood everything.  Guru ji took a Chambeli (Jasmine) flower and placed it on top of the milk.  The flower floated and immersed.  Guru ji gave the Peers a signal informing them: “the pot is filled and the flower immersed in it.  See me as the same.”  When the Peers saw this, they understood the signal.  They knew that Guru ji was really high.  Shamas Tabrez spoke as a Jagyaso: “I have done a strict and harsh Tapp.  My body has dried up.  I wanted the vices of my mind to be destroyed.  I tried for a very long time.  My mind was not still, even for a second.  It kept moving like the flame of a Diva.  How can the mind be destroyed?  Give me that wisdom with love.”

Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji responded: “by destroying the burrow, the snake cannot be destroyed.  The snake can only be charmed with Mantras.  There is no other way.  The mind cannot be charmed by Tapp.  The mind wanders in every direction.  It wishes for glory and praise as you do more Tapp.  To ponder the Shabads of the Satguru, that is the Mantra.  That’s how the mind can come under your control.  There is no other way.”  Shamas ji asked: “what is the Shabad?”  Guru ji then said: “the world is false.  Understand this with determination.  It is like a mirage for the deer.  There is no use in applying effort towards it.  Understand that it is an illusion and turn your mind away from it.  See the world as a bow made from the horns of a rabbit.  Since rabbits don’t have horns, such a bow does not exist.  If someone wanted to win against the enemies with the bow made from a rabbit’s horns, that would not be possible.  If another person would say: “I saw a garden in the sky.  I smelled its flowers.”  This would also be untrue.  If another would say: “I shopped in the markets of Harchandauri (a city in the clouds),” this is not real.  This world is not real.  Don’t apply efforts towards it.  Engrain the words of the Satguru in your heart.  Seeing the Aatma as the real form, the world can be seen for what it really is.  This is the way to win the mind.  You will be in bliss if you focus on this.”

Peer Bahaaval Hak was sitting nearby.  He heard Guru ji’s words and said: “Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, if you say the world is an illusion along with the Maya, how can we give and take anything without the Maya?”  Sri Guru ji responded: “understand this: Maya is an illusion.  The ways of the world are also illusions.  See the truth just as the rope is mistook for a snake in the dark.  One sees I river in their dream and crosses it in a canoe.  He gives a Takka to use the canoe.  See the way of Maya in the same way.  Everything in the dream was an illusion.  See the Parmeshwar as infinite and true.  His name is True as well.  Understand this in your mind.”

Rukan Deen Peer then spoke: “tell us the characteristics of saints.  How is their nature and character?  Give us this wisdom in an easy way.”  Sri Guru ji said: “listen with your ears to the glory of saints; listen to their characteristics: they are happy hearing the praises of others.  They serve the person with good qualities.  They think of their Aatmas.  They think of the Gyaan.  They do this everyday.  They are wise.  They are compassionate from their minds.  They are always wise.  They stop their eyes from looking at other women.  The people who commit bad deeds, the saints do not wish to be in their company.  They never show their powers or strength to anyone else.  They see enemy and friend as the same.  In sorrow and joy; respect and disrespect; pain and pleasure: they stay the same in every state.  They sing the praises of the Parmeshwar, day and night.  They spend their life with the Naam.”  The Compassionate One then uttered the Hazarnama:

Tilang Mahalla 1..

The one who is attentive (with the mind) is blessed..  The one who is not attentive is without blessings..  Honour/Dharam is the friend.. The one without honour is an infidel.. Ego is catastrophe.. Anger is blasphemy..  Desire (of the mind) is Satan..  Pride is damned..  The face of the slanderer is black..  The honourable is peaceful.. The dishonoured is with a black face..  The ungrateful is embarrassed..  The one with the bad intentions is impure..  The soft-hearted is pure..  The one without desires is an Auliya.. The greedy is a sinner..  (To speak) Lie is Hell..  (To speak) Truth is Heaven..  The one who speaks bad is pale..  The one who feels the pain of others is the Darvesh..  The one who does not feel pain is a butcher..  The one who gives food is compassionate (Rahim)..  To give Gyaan is humility..  Hospitality is greatness..  The one who donates is the Satti..  They one who does not give is a cheap person..  Tyranni is sin..  The one without pride of strength is pure..  To be just is praiseworthy..  Knowledge is the best book (medicine)..  To pray for others is wealth..  To curse others is catastrophe..  Justice is the cleanliness..  Theft is greed..  To indulge in extra- marital affairs is impurity..  Praise is the Wazoo (the cleansing)..  The Bhaang (call to prayer) is the sound of Khuddah..  Nature is a miracle..  Fakiri is patience..  Without contentment is deceit..  The Peers can show the way to Khuddah..  To be without a Peer/ Guru is to be lost..  The sword is chivalry..  Langar is the greatest donation..  Justice is the Emperor..  Whoever knows all of this..  Then, Nanak says, that person is wise..1..

(Sri Nanak Prakash Granth)

Hearing all of this, all of the Peers bowed to Guru ji’s lotus feet.  They praised Guru ji with bliss in their hearts.  Sri Guru ji said: “listen Peer Bahaaval, greed of money deceives everyone.  Many ideologies are made because of greed.”  The Peers folded their hands and said: “you are Dhan Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji.  Your words were like Amrit which destroyed the pain of death.  Your Darshan is always a success.  Your Fakiri is great that you have earned.  Your greatness is so grand.  You are the Guru of the world.  Only you are deserving for such a status.  In Kaliyuga, you gave wisdom to the people.  You saved millions, oh Jagtesha.  Everyone talks of their Fakiris but what you did is the greatest.  The Tapp that Sheikh Fareed ji did is great (who did Tapp for 36 years.  He stayed hungry in the jungles and then served his Guru for 12 years).  Seeta ji did the right Sat (she did not see any other man and proclaimed to be immersed into the Earth if she was pure) and Lakshman ji was the greatest Jatti (chaste).  Kabir ji did the right Bhagti (living in the householder’s life and doing Bhagti).  The determination of Dhroo ji was great (who did Tapp in the jungles on one leg).  The right Ghristi was Adam (Either Shiv ji, Adam, or Ibrahim Adam the king).  The correct Jog was done by Gorakh Nath ji.  The correct renouncer was Bharthri ji (who left his kingdom and wives).  The correct Tapp was done by Raja Janak ji (who was a saint and lived in the luxuries of kingdoms).  The great fight was the one that Ravan fought (he did not give up till the end).  The deepest depression of separation was by Ram Chander ji (after losing his wife).  The best Sanyas was by Datt ji.  You did the best Fakiri.  You have all of the qualities of the ones mentioned.”  They all bowed to Guru ji’s feet and became his servants.  Guru ji then said: “remember the Name of Khuddah.  Do the Sangat of saints.  Receive all of the joys.  Keep the fear of the Master in your mind.  You won’t be touched by vices then.  When one does Satsangat, one receives Mukti easily.”  The Peers all heard this and stood up.  They bowed with love.  They were really happy to meet Guru ji.  They said: “Guru Nanak Dev ji, you are Dhan.”  Guru ji then left them.

Guru ji walked slowly.  Sri Guru Angad Dev ji listen, I asked Guru Nanak Dev ji: “which Peer was the best out of them all?”  Guru ji heard this and said: “the one named Shamas Tabrez: he has the highest status.  I will tell you his Prasang, by which he became really wise.  Where Rome is in the foreign land, a person named Mansoor lived there.  He met a great saint there.  The saint destroyed Mansoor’s concept of Jeev.  He then only saw the Brahm.  He then said: “An-Al-Haq.”  His duality was gone.  He didn’t see anything else besides the Brahm.  There was a Maulana that lived in his city who followed the Turk Shariya.  He heard Mansoor say “An-Al-Haq.”  He was afraid and told Mansoor to stop saying that.  The one who sees the One, he is never afraid of anything.  The Maulana quarrelled a lot with Mansoor.  Mansoor didn’t listen to him.  He was then arrested and hung to death.  He kept saying: “An-Al-Haq.”  He was killed but he didn’t let his mind wander.  The blood that fell to the ground was heard saying: “An-Al-Haq.”  The Maulanas saw this and were amazed.  They saw this as impossible.  They burnt his body then.  The ashes from the fire could still be heard, shouting out: “An-Al-Haq.”  The Maulana then took the ashes and put them in a glass urn.  He sealed the urn and kept it in his home.  He captured the ashes and thought to himself: “now he can’t say that.”  After some time, the Maulana had a daughter who grew up.  One day, she opened up the glass urn and smelled the ashes.  She didn’t smell anything and ate a little bit of the ashes to see what they were.  She didn’t taste anything.  She thought to herself: “what is this?  It has no smell or taste.  I wonder why Father kept this here.  It doesn’t seem of any use.”  The girl became pregnant from eating the ash.  She saw the signs of pregnancy.  The parents were shocked.  They deemed the girl a sinner and became worried.  The Maulana and his wife discussed amongst themselves: “it is good to kill her.  We will be dishonoured otherwise.”  When the Maulana fell asleep at night, he had a dream.  He heard a voice in his dream: “if you kill your daughter, you will be in pain.  You will be killed as well.  Therefore, stop thinking about killing her.”  The Maulana got scared with his dream.  He hid his daughter in his home.  After 9 months, the girl gave birth to a boy.  The Maulana took the baby boy and put him in a pot.  He took the pot to the river and threw it in it.  There was a Dhobi washing clothes on the shore nearby.  He saw the pot floating in the river and opened it.  He saw the baby and picked it up.  He was shocked but raised the baby as his own.  The baby was named Shamas Tabrez because his face was radiant like the sun.  As Shamas Tabrez grew up, he was detached from the world.

The Maulana had a school.  One day, Shamas Tabrez came to the school.  Many children met Shamas Tabrez who read the Koran.  The Maulana was not in the school.  He was at home.  Shamas Tabrez took all of the books and threw them into a pond.  The children all yelled out that they lost their books.  The Maulana ran to his school.  He ran after Shamaz Tabrez but couldn’t catch him.  He was too fast for him.  He then came to the pond and took the books out of the water.  He flapped them to take the water out only, to see that no water fell out.  Instead, there was a lot of dust that came out of the books.  Shamas Tabrez showed him that dust came out of the books instead of water.  The Maulana was amazed to see this.  He recognized Shamas Tabrez as a powerful person.  There was no water that came from the books.  He ringed out dust.  He ran to Shamas Tabrez and fell to his feet.  He wanted to be his student.  He said: “tell me the path to Khuddah.”  To test the Maulana, Shamas ji said: “if this is what you want, then obey me.  Give me alcohol to drink.  Bring your daughter to me.”  The Maulana did not wander.  He took the boy home.  He laid out a bed and had him sit with love.  He brought him alcohol to drink.  He sent his daughter to Shamas Tabrez and locked the doors of the room.  Shamaz Tabrez saw his mother and told her what happened to him: “don’t worry.  I was born of your womb.  I am your son and are here to see you.  I didn’t drink your milk as a child.  I will drink it now to fulfill my childhood wish.  Give it to me now, mother.”  The mother understood everything: “this is my son who my father took away from me.  He put him in the river.  He was raised and is now older.”  She was overcome with motherly love and so, milk came into her breasts.  Shamas Tabrez drank the milk and said: “I am leaving now.  If your father asks, tell him: “he has gone to another place.  If you want to ask him something, go and meet him where he is.”  Shamas ji left the home.  The door remained locked.  Shamas left with his power.

When the sun came up, the Maulana opened the door.  He saw his daughter and said: “where did that boy go whom I left here?  The doors did not open.”  The girl told her father: “go and meet him where he is.  I will tell you where he is.”  After she told him, the Maulana quickly went to the place.  He met Shamas Tabrez and bowed to him.  He became humble and bowed to his feet.  Shamas gave him wisdom about meeting the Khuddah.  He told him everything and went to another place.

After some time, there was a great King there whose child had died.  He was depressed in sorrow.  The king called all of the Fakirs and Maulanas.  He arrested them all by his soldiers.  He said to them all: “the prophet Eesa (Jesus) wrote a Ketaab which I will say to you a passage: “I can resurrect a dead person by the command of Khuddah.  There will be other prophets like me who can do this.”  I have read all this.  There are some people who can bring people back to life.  The saints can do this.  Your prophet has said so.  Think about all this with a pure mind.  My son has died in pain.  I am in sorrow.  I want you to bring him back to life.  Otherwise get together and tell me that what Eesa said was a lie.”  Hearing the king’s words, the Maulanas and Fakirs got worried.  They all sat in the jail and couldn’t figure out how to get out.

Shamas came to this place by himself.  He asked the prisoners: “why are you all sitting here, worried?  Did some task of yours spoil?”  The people all responded: “the king wants us to make his dead son alive again.  He has arrested us for this reason.  Nobody here has that power.”  Shamas said: “I can make him alive again but you will give me pain in response.”  They all folded his hands and said: “why would we give you pain?  We would never do that.  Make the boy alive and release us.  We will worship your feet.”  Shamas went to the place of the king.  He saw the dead boy and stood in front of him.  He said: “by my command, be alive again.  Walk around as you did before.”  The dead boy woke up right away.  He got up and the king’s pain was all gone.  Everyone was happy.  He released all of the prisoners.

The Maulanas got together in one place.  They said: “he did a wrong thing.  He violated the Shariya.  He said the boy should be alive by “My” command.  He didn’t say by “Khuddah’s” command.  He didn’t say Khuddah’s name.  He committed blasphemy.  This is not according to our faith.  He should be punished.”  They went to Shamas and had him arrested, those who said they wouldn’t give him pain.  Shamas said: “what punishment do you want to give me?  Do what is in your mind.  I can’t be killed.  I am the Aatma.  You are liars though.  You will be punished.”  The Maulanas said: “according to Shariya, you should be skinned alive.  You made the boy alive by your command.  We condemn you.”  Shamas was skinned alive.  Blood dripped.  He didn’t die.  He left Rome.  He was deformed and scary to look at.  His body was infested with insects.  He had puss on his body.  He was unaffected by this.  Nobody would come close to him.  He left that land and came to Multan.  He became anxious from hunger.  He asked for food but nobody gave him food.  Someone gave him a fish out of compassion.  It was raw.  Nobody let him cook the fish.  He came to the city of Multan and sat down with the fish.  He said to the sun: “my name is Shamas. Your name is Shamas as well.  Do my task.  Come down and cook my fish.  I will eat it then.  I am hungry.  Then we will be friends.”  The sun came down.  He made it really hot.  The fish was cooked in the sun.  The people felt the heat of the sun go really hot.  This is known in Multan till today.  It is still really hot there today.  The whole world saw this miracle.  They fell to Shamas Tabrez’s feet.  They all served him in every way.  They became his servants by mind, words and actions.  Shamas has been living there since then.  He is the most powerful Peer.  This is his Prasang oh Bala.

2-38 Shuh Suhaagan/ Baal Gundhai/ Moola

The ones who take the support of the Satguru’s Shabad, they take the weapon of Naam Simran and defeat the enemy of the mind.  They are in bliss in both worlds.

Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..

Listen to the Katha, oh son of Pheroo.  The Destroyer of Sin and Pain travelled.  He told me the history of Shamas Tabrez on the way.  We travelled and came to a place where a Fakir’s Mela was looted.  The Fakir was talked bad about.  He was exposed and his façade unravelled.  He was embarrassed among the people.  Guru ji came back to the place to bless him.  Guru ji was compassionate and wanted to rid him of his pain.  Guru ji stayed at the same woman’s home as coming before.  He stayed in the same place.  It was the Dooj of the moon phase again when Guru ji came, just as it was the last time he was here.  There was no Mela though.  Guru ji was compassionate and felt sorry.  He asked the woman about what happened: “Shuh Suhaagan used to live here.  There was a Mela last time I was here.  There is nothing here now.  Does he still live here or not?  Many used to follow him.”  The woman said: “he was exposed as a fake.  His stuff was ruined.  He was like the fruit of Simmal.  When it ripens, there’s nothing but dust inside.”  The Flag of the Bedis heard this and sat outside the woman’s home.

There was a handicapped person that came towards Guru ji.  He had no arms or feet.  When he did Guru ji’s Darshan, the person had arms and feet again.  He came out to be very handsome.  He folded his hands and spoke with humility: “your Darshan has made my body complete again.  You cut my pain.  I am well now!  I can’t leave you now.  Keep me in your sanctuary.”  The Kirpa Nidhaan laughed and said: “if someone in the city asks you where your feet and arms came from, you should tell them that Shuh Suhaagan cured you.”  He obeyed Guru ji and went into the city.  The people saw him and were surprised.  They asked: “where did you get your arms and feet from?”  The person said: “Shuh Suhaagan fixed my ill body.”  The people were amazed to hear this.  This news spread throughout the city.  As he spoke around, he came to Shuh Suhaagan.  Shuh Suhaagan heard of this and asked the person: “where is the real person who took your pain away?”  The person said: “come with me.  I will show you who destroyed my pain.”  Shuh Suhaagan was amazed.  He wished to do the Darshan of the one who fixed the handicapped person.

The two people came to Guru Nanak Dev ji.  There was compassion in both of his eyes.  Shuh Suhaagan did Guru ji’s Darshan and understood that it was the same Darvesh who came to his door and turned back.  “He is the Khuddah, the Master of the Universe.  He came to destroy my fake façade.”  He grabbed Guru ji’s feet.  He became humble and didn’t lift his head.  He said: “you are the Jagadeesh.  Forgive my mistakes.  You are my Sahib and I am your servant.  I am the lowest of lows, you are the saviour of the low.  You took an Avatar to save the people.  You hid your greatness and had me praised.  You are really great!  This is your Dharma.”  Guru ji said: “understand this: the Shuh is manifested everywhere.  Recognize him.  Give everyone your Darshan and do everyone’s Darshan.  Do the Bandagi all the time.  Connect your mind to Khuddah.”  Shuh Suhaagan obeyed Guru ji’s great words.  He was forgiven and so he went home.  He became a Mureed of Guru Nanak Dev ji.  He was followed in his city then.  The handicapped continued telling everyone that he was cured by Shuh Suhaagan.”  The people believed again that the Shuh really came to Shuh Suhaagan.

The flags were hoisted at the Fakir’s place again.  The Nagaras rang again.  The Mela started up again.  People from all 4 directions came.  People would meet and say: “only the bad ones slandered him.  He was a complete saint.  Shuh really comes to his door.  His boon gave the handicap person arms and feet.”  People came and brought gifts.  People from far away came.  The Fakir’s sangat grew more than before.  He did the Simran of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji.  His Pooja in the world grew till he remained on earth.  He started his own Panth who wore Kungroos on their feet.  They wore Molis around their necks.  This Panth still exists in the world.  In this way, Guru ji blessed him.  Guru ji is the Patit Paavin, the purifier of the sinners.  Who else could do this other than Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji?  He had saved the people of Kaliyuga.  He was the great “Gareeb Nivaaj!”

Guru ji walked on ahead.  He was benevolent.  He was going to save the people.  Where the Tilla (top of a hill or mountain) of Baal Gundhai was, Guru ji came there.  Many Jogis lived in his place.  Baal Gundhai was a Jogi as well.  In his Dhera, there were many good horses in the stables.  He also had many colourful clothes to donate to others.  He would have delicious foods made for visitors.  Baal Gundhai made sure everyone ate well.  They were given nice homes to rest in.  If he saw someone naked, he would give them clothes.  If a traveller was tired, he would send a horse for them, sending one of his people.  He wished to donate and serve others all the time.  He was like a tree with a lot of fruit, that gives shade and food.  Guru ji came to the Dhera and sat down.  When Baal Gundhai got news that there are 2 Sadhoo visitors sitting outside his Dhera, and aren’t coming in, he called 2 Jogis and said: “go and bring those Sadhoos in.”  The Jogis came to where the radiant Guru was sitting.  They said: “come visitors, get up and come to Baal Gundhai’s place.  There are nice homes to sit and rest in.  You can spend time in joy there.”  Sri Prabhoo ji said: “we won’t come.  We will spend the night here, where we sit.  A Sadhoo should be like this.  Whatever the time calls for, the Sadhoo should be happy with it.”  The Jogis came back to Baal Gundhai and said: “the Sadhoos aren’t coming.”  Baal Gundhai got up himself and came to Guru ji.  Where Prabhoo ji was sitting, Baal Gundhai came there and spoke with respect: “come oh visitor Sadhoos, with me.  The clouds are coming and so it will rain soon.  You can spend the night in the home with joy.”  Sri Guru ji said: “we are Sadhoos who don’t live in the 3 Gunas.  We are Ateets.  We accept whatever comes to us.  We see pain and pleasure as the some.  We spend our time like this.  Where would we keep looking for a home to stay in?  We travel to many foreign lands.  Wherever we sit, we spend the time there.  This is our ideology.”  Baal Gundhai then said: “whatever compassion the Akaal Purakh does, whatever pleasureful items he gives, we shouldn’t disrespect it.  Everything belongs to the Niranjan Akaal Purakh.  It is good to serve others with nice items.”  After saying this, Baal Gundhai took Guru ji with him.

When we came to a nice house, he said to us: “see this nice place.  You will enjoy your time here.”  Sri Guru ji said: “what drama of kings should I see?  This is for kings.”  When Baal Gundhai showed the colourful cloths to Guru ji, Guru ji said: “this is the way of kings.”  Baal Gundhai took Guru ji to the stables and showed a lot of horses to us.  Guru ji said: “listen Baal Gundhai, this is the way of Rajas.  It is good for kings.  The Sadhoo Ateet renounces the world.  What will I do with all these things?  One should seek Aatam Gyaan by letting go of the ego.  The saint’s treasure is the wealth of Naam Simran.  You and I should only see that which will give the unending bliss.  The wish for material things, the Ateets don’t wish for them.”  Baal Gundhai was surprised to hear such words.  He said: “tell me Ateet, what is your name?  Where did you come from and where are you going?  You have a radiant form.  Your personality is great.”  Guru ji said: “my name is Nanak Nirankari.  This is Bala.”  When Baal Gundhai heard the names, he bowed with love to Guru ji.  He said: “now I know that you are Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji who spook to the Sidhs.  You are really powerful.  You are really wise.  Please answer my question: you were sitting outside, were you going to be in joy or in pain?  You came into a nice home where your fatigue would be gone.”  Guru ji said: “where I was sitting, I would have spent the night there.  The Fakirs can’t always find nice places like beautiful homes or places.”  Baal Gundhai said: “why don’t you tell me what would have been your state: in joy or pain?”  Guru ji said: “it would have been a troublesome night.  The clouds were coming.”  Baal Gundhai lifted his hands carrying Saag and a Roti of Bhakhra.  He said: “this is what I eat.  I don’t eat the delicacies.  That’s for the visitors.  They are for serving the people.  I never consume those things.  They’re for giving away.  Many people come here in joy.  They rest here while travelling by.”  Guru ji was really happy to hear this.  He praised him a lot: “out of all the Jogis, you are the highest because you think of the good of others.  You are wise because you use your intellect to serve others.”  We stayed for one night and then left in the morning.

We then arrived to Sialkot.  Guru ji said to me: “oh Bala, a friend of mine lives in this city who is a Sansari.  The one who came with us, whose name is Moola.  He lives here.  I wanted to meet him.  Let’s go to his home.”  Guru ji and I came to Moola’s home.  The Supreme Bedi came and Moola’s wife saw him.  The wife saw Guru ji and said to her husband: “the one whom you left with before for 6 months, that Sadhoo is back again.  You should hide in the home otherwise he will take you again.  Hide where the cow dung is kept to dry.”  Even though Moola knew Prabhoo ji well and how powerful he was, being omnipotent and omniscient; being the Master of all hearts and could do as he wished; he still listened to his wife, and didn’t use his wisdom.  He went to the back of the home where the shed of the cow dung was.  The shed was really dark where he hid.  Guru ji knew what was happening.  Guru ji shouted: “Moola!  Moola!”  Moola’s wife heard this and came to the door.  She said: “who you are calling out for, he is not home.  He has gone to another village for a task.”  Guru ji said: “he has become a Bemukh.  His Karma has gone bad.  I came to see you but you hid in the home.  You said: “life is a lie and death is the truth.”  You became a fool and didn’t understand this.  You hid by listening to your wife.”  Guru ji uttered a Salok:

Salok M:1..

The friendship with lovers of money is false and only garbage comes from it..

Moola, you did not see death, where it can come..21..

(SGGS 1412)

After saying this, Guru ji turned his back and left.  At that same time, a black cobra came and bit Moola in the dark.  Moola yelled and came outside.  He called out to his wife: “oh one with bad Karma, you killed me.  You climbed on my head and took my life.  Tell me where he went now.  I will ask for forgiveness.”  He said this and fainted right away.  He lost his awareness and fell.  He couldn’t say anything further.  His wife couldn’t say anything.  She began to cry.  The news spread in the city: “a complete saint came to Moola’s home but Moola listened to his wife and hid.  He disrespected the saint and was bit by the snake.  He is going to die now.”  The people of the village came to Moola’s home and saw Moola’s blue body.  Guru ji came out of the village and sat down in a nice place.  Many people came to Moola’s home.  People met and spoke: “Guru Nanak Dev ji is sitting outside.  Let’s take his body to him.  He is the Complete Being.  He will forgive his mistake.”  The people put Moola’s body on a platform.  4 people lifted the platform and brought Moola’s body to Guru ji.  They heard of where Guru ji was.  They all talked bad about Moola and praised Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji.  Both rich and poor heard of this and joined the group of people going to Guru ji.  Many others joined in.  There was a great crowd with Moola’s body.  Everyone came to Guru ji.  They bowed to his feet while taking Moola off of the platform.  They placed Moola in front of Guru ji.  They folded their hands and spoke with humility: “he is guilty and you killed him.  Please be compassionate and make him alive again.  He became unwise while knowing everything.  He was under the influence of his wife.”  Guru ji heard this and said to all: “his life is done.  He can’t be saved now.  He was killed from the court.  Nobody can save him.  He did my Darshan so he will be rewarded.  When I will wear my 10th incarnation, I will cut his life and death cycle.  He will be born many times.  I will hunt him and give him Mukti.  He will take births as pigs, rabbits and deer.”  Guru ji then went quiet and didn’t say a word afterwards.  During the time of Guru Gobind Singh ji, while he was in Sri Hazoor Sahib, Guru ji went hunting with Bahadhur Shah.  Moola was a rabbit at that time.  Guru ji killed the rabbit.  Moola’s soul came out and bowed to Guru Gobind Singh ji.  Bahadhur Shah saw this and asked about him.  Guru ji spoke of Moola Khatri’s Mukti to Bahadhur Shah.  Bahadhur Shah bowed to Guru ji.  This place was Shikaar Ghat.

The people brought Moola’s body back to his home.  Many people came there.  When Moola was brought to the home, he died.  His breaths finished.   The women began to cry.  The people cremated his body amongst the wooden pyre.  Guru ji stayed one night and left from there.  When the people heard of Guru ji’s departure, they all ran to meet him.  They all grabbed Guru ji’s feet and said: “please save us!”  Guru ji said: “make a Dharamsala in this place.  Make Panchamrit and do Keertan.  You will be rewarded.”  Guru ji gave everyone Charan Pahul and left the place.  There is a Gurduara there till today called “Gurduara Babay di Ber.”  People obeyed and made a Darbar there.  It is radiant today.  People do Pooja of the place and receive rewards.  The Ber is still there too.

As Kavi Santokh Singh ji was saying the Katha, the listeners questioned him: “how was Moola given Mukti?  How was he saved?  Tell us the whole Parsang.”  Kavi Santokh Singh ji spoke: “listen oh wise ones to what happened to Moola.  The Tenth Paatshaah, who gave a lot of joy to his Sikhs; the treasure of Degh and Tegh; whose praises cannot be said, Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji, was really beautiful and radiant.  When the Compassionate One sat on the Takhat, he saved many Sangats.  He destroyed the sinners with his radiance.  One Vaishnav heard of Guru ji’s praises: “Guru ji is really great of the Sodhi Soorya Vansh.  He has come to Nanded.  He sits on the seat of Guru Nanak Dev ji.  He gives wisdom to whoever goes to him.  He gives them Mukti.  He is really wise.  He has Vivek.  He is the treasure of the saintly form.”  When the Vaishnav Sadhoo heard this praise, he came to Guru ji for Darshan.  Guru ji was at Heera Ghat at that time.  Janmeja had killed many Brahmins at that place known as “Bhamanmara.”  When the Vaishnav came, Guru ji was gone hunting with his many weapons.  The Vaishnav asked the people in the Dhera: “is the Treasure of Wisdom here?  Where is he?  I wish to do his Darshan.”  One Sikh heard this and said: “Sri Guru ji just left before you came.  He has gone hunting in the jungles.”  When the Vaishnav heard this, he became doubtful.  He thought to himself: “he doesn’t seem have the ability to give Mukti.  He is without compassion.  He kills other life forms.  How can he save the world?  I still came here so I will meet him once.”  After thinking about this, the Vaishnav walked towards where Guru ji went hunting.  Where the Giver of Mukti was hunting, that’s where he went.  The Vaishnav saw Guru ji hunting.  A rabbit came out.  Guru ji released his hawk.  The hawk pounced on the rabbit and ripped it apart.  Guru ji was very happy to see this.  The Vaishnav saw this and regretted coming: “why did I come to him?  He is happy seeing the animal suffering.  How would he have Mukti to give?”  Guru ji understood what the Vaishnav was thinking.  Guru ji touched the rabbit with his hands.  The rabbit came into the form of a Devata right away.  He was wearing golden jewellery and was very handsome.  Kamadeva was embarrassed with the person’s beauty.  The Devata praised Guru ji and went towards the sky.  It was Bhai Moola.  When the Vaishnav saw this, his faith became deeper in his heart.  He ran and grabbed Guru ji’s feet.  A deep love arose in his heart.  When he came to Guru ji’s Dhera, he asked Guru ji: “who was that whom you gave Mukti to?”  Guru ji spoke of the Prasang of Bhai Moola to all.  Hearing this, the Vaishnav became a Sikh in the best way.  In this way, Moola received Mukti.”  Kavi Santokh Singh ji told everyone this Prasang.

2-39 Residing in Kartarpur/ The Sidh Gosht in Achal on Shivratri

Reading and listening (of Gurbani) are like milk.  Add the culture of love into the milk.  Churn it with the Simran; see your real form and eat the butter with joy.

Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..

Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, listen to the great Katha.  The Gunkhaani travelled on and came to Sri Kartarpur.  The Sikhs were happy to see him and bowed to him.  Both of Guru ji’s sons came and bowed to his feet.  They were in bliss to see their father.  Everyone was really happy to see Guru ji.  Panchamrit was made at that moment.  An Ardaas was done and the Karah Prashaad was distributed to all.  Keertan was done like clouds thundering.  The Sikhs from around the area came to do the Darshan of Guru ji.  Their wishes were fulfilled.  Guru ji began to reside in Kartarpur.  He spread the Simran of the Naam in the world.  Guru ji’s praises spread many times over.  He won all 10 directions and his radiance spread.  The Satnam Chakkar spread.  The Peers and Meers of the world all had bowed to Guru ji’s feet.  Pandits and fake Gyaanis; the knowers of Vidya and the egotistical; the ones who used powers to be known in the world; on top of them, the Prabhoo’s praise overshadowed them all.  The Sidhs of Gorakh were all defeated in debates in every way.  They all lost.  The Sidhs showed their powers but got tired.  They couldn’t do anything to Guru ji.  They lost and were embarrassed.  They didn’t let their egos go.  They were proud that the world worshipped them.  To break their egos, the Flag of the Bedis made the efforts.  He wanted to break their egos and show them the path of Prema Bhagti, for he was Akaal Purakh himself.  He loved them all.  He wanted them to be saved.  In Kartarpur, Guru ji took off his clothes of Fakirs.  He wore the clothes of regular householders.  He had the fields farmed.  From the crops that grew from Guru ji’s fields, Guru ji ran the Langars.  Many Sikhs came to Kartarpur to do his Darshan.  Some stayed with Guru ji and decided to spend the rest of their lives in Seva.  Some would go back to their homes.

At 3 am, Keertan was started everyday which gave bliss.  Guru ji said: “Do the Simran of Satnam.”  He gave this wisdom to all.  “Low or high, king or pauper; doing the Simran will make the terror of the Jumms go away.  Pure or impure mind; do the Simran.  It will make the mind pure from the desires and vices.  Gyaan will come.  The bonds will be broken.  There is no easier way in Kaliyuga than Simran.”  The fortunate Sikhs heard this wisdom.  Their minds focused into the Prema Bhagti.  They became drenched in this.  Many Sikhs received Mukti like this.  They remained detached from the world and became Vivekis (understanding the infinite from the finite world).

Hearing the news from his own city, Bhai Ajitha ji quickly came to the feet of the Master of the Universe.  His mind was like the bee for the lotus of Guru ji’s lotus feet.  Guru ji stayed in Kartarpur for many days.  Many Sikhs had their bonds of attachment and desires broken.

The Mela of Shivratri came.  The Mela of Achal was celebrated in a well way.  All of the Sidhs came and did their Asanas.  When they came, many came to worship them in Vatala.  Their Pooja was done and people brought them a lot of gifts.  Guru Nanak Dev ji knew about the Mela.  He took a few Sikhs and came to Achal Vatala.  Bhai Ajitha ji was with Guru ji at that time and so he traveled to Vatala with Guru ji.  We all reached Achal and set up our Dhera.  Night soon came and it became dark.  A strong blinding wind came which made rocks and pebbles fly along with dust.  It started to rain with hail.  The lightening flashed.  People lost their patience.  The birds on the trees were killed.  In the morning, Guru ji sat on a high place.  The Mela gathered.  Many people heard of Guru ji’s arrival and so they ran to do his Darshan.  Whoever brought gifts for the Sidhs, they gave them to Guru ji instead.  There was a great crowd around Prabhoo ji.  People did their Ardaas for wish fulfillments.  There was no place to stand around Guru ji.  People were happy to see Guru ji’s face.  Men and women brought a lot of gifts.  They bowed from far away.  They were not satiated with Guru ji’s Darshan like the Chakor is not satisfied seeing the full moon.  A lot of gifts piled near Guru ji’s feet.  Many types of gifts came.  Nobody went to the Sidhs.  The Sidhs sat and stared at Guru ji.  They were not happy.  They were sad that they weren’t being worshipped.  Not one gift came to them.  They were angry and jealous.  They all gathered and had a discussion: “we are not being worshipped.  We need to do something about this.  People will never follow us then.  We need to take care of him.  The Mela is crowded.  We need to make him embarrassed.  Let’s show him our powers so his ego is destroyed.  When we do this then we will be followed and worshipped.  Otherwise leave without any hope.  Don’t bother coming back here to do your Asanas.”  When Mangal Nath heard this, he tried to give the other Sidhs wisdom: “you have already lost in debates with him.  You showed your powers to him before.  Whoever had powers, you used them all to you full extents.  You all lost then.  You couldn’t say anything.  You are all being egotistical again.  You are being stubborn.  You are shameless.  You won’t be able to defeat the Guru.  You can’t embarrass him.  He will defeat you again as he did before.  Whatever wish you have of being worshipped, get rid of your ego.  Follow him and go to meet him.  You will get whatever you wish for.”  Bhunger Nath heard this and got angry.  He was an empty metal pot making loud noises.  He said: “Mangal Nath, you have always sided with him.  We sent you to debate with him but you sided with him.  You left your own Panth and took on his ideology.  We can’t agree with you.  We will debate with him.  Watch, we will win over him.  You will then believe us.”  After saying this, they all went to where Prabhoo ji was with the crowd.

Raas dancers were doing their own Bhagti there.  Some dressed as Radha and some dressed as Krishan.  They were dancing in front of Guru ji.  Many people watched this dance drama.  There was a great crowd gathered there.  There was no place to stand.  A lot of money was showering there, given to the dancers by the Mela attendees.  Everyone watched the dancers with delight.  They gave a lot of money.  Seeing this, the Sidhs got jealous.  They saw money coming to Guru Nanak Dev ji as well.  They couldn’t tolerate Guru ji’s radiance.  Like ghee touching fire, the anger of Sidhs grew seeing this.  There was a pot near the dancers in which people put money in.  It was overflowing with money.  Bhunger Nath became invisible and hid the pot full of money.  The dancers noticed that their pot of money was gone.  They couldn’t see the pot and forgot their Bhagti.  They became depressed and said: “who took the pot?”  They started to look around.  A ruckus arose.  Satguru ji knew what had happened.  He thought to himself: “these Sidhs became jealous.  He took the pot of money 200 Kos away into the sky.  They did this with their power.”  Without delay, Sri Guru ji raised his hand and brought the pot back.  He gave the pot back to the dancers.  Seeing the immense power of Guru ji, the Sidhs got angry.  They came to Guru ji to debate with him.

Bhunger Nath came with a lot of pride and said: “you don’t know the traditions of Gyaan, not even one!  You put kaanjhi in white milk.  Now the milk has spoiled.  It can’t be churned now so no butter will come of it.  You travelled as an Udaasi before and dressed as a Fakir.  You travelled many lands and gave your wisdom to many people.  You became a Virakat and left your whole family.  You were a fakir in the world.  Now you wear worldly clothes like regular householders.  You sit with your big family now.  You didn’t see the highest form and got stuck amongst the Ghristis again (this is what the kaanjhi in the milk referred to).  One cannot be saved in the Ghristi Ashram.  This makes one entangled in many webs and bondages.”  Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “Bhunger!  You don’t know the highest form.  You are unwise.  Your mother (in Jogi terms, the Guru is referred to as the mother) is not proper.  The mother did not know how to wash the pot properly.  For this reason, butter was not achieved for you.  Your milk was not churned because your ego was too much.  You left Grist and became an Ateet but you still had love left in your heart.  You went to the homes of the Ghristis to beg for food.  You went from home to home, staining your honour.  Without being given something to you, you got nothing.  You are dependent on desires.  You wander in doubt.”  Hearing this, Shamboo Nath spoke with a lot of ego: “what power did you show to the world?  Why did you delay in showing it to us?  Go and hide.  We will find you.  Otherwise we will hide and you won’t be able to find us.”  Guru ji said: “you have powers that you can show.  You can go and hide where you wish to.  Use your full powers.”  The Sidhs heard this and came to a decision amongst themselves: “let’s separate and go in 10 different directions.”  Shamboo Nath went towards east and Bhunger Nath went to the west.  Ooram and Dhooram went north.  Machinder Nath went south.  In the Paavak Aagneya (southeast) direction, Kanak went.  Langar Nath went Vayavya (northwest).  In the Nairat direction (southwest) Jhunger Nath went.  In the Ishanya direction (northeast), went Gaun Guaal.  Some went to the Patals and some flew to the sky.  They went towards the 10 directions in this way.  Guru ji knew exactly where they all were.  Guru ji made many forms of himself, as many Sidhs there were.  Mangal Nath and the other wise Sidhs just stood there, watching the drama.  Guru ji went to the hiding Sidhs and grabbed them by their moustaches.  Bhunger Nath thought he was being chased and Shamboo Nath thought the same.  Jhunger, Langer and others thought only they were being chased.  All of the hiding Sidhs saw Guru ji standing before them.  Guru ji made many forms of himself.  The complete Prabhoo grabbed them all by the moustaches and brought them to one place.  They were strengthless.  They went quiet and weak.  They became embarrassed.  Sri Prabhoo ji said to them: “now you come and try to find me.  If you can’t find me then take a Takka and do an Ardaas.  As soon as your head touches the earth (while bowing), I will give you my Darshan right away.”  After saying this, Guru ji separated his body into the 5 primal elements.  The Jot went into this Kartaar form.  The one who gives Mukti to his servants, the Sidhs started to look for him.  They searched the 10 directions but couldn’t see Guru ji anywhere.  They used their powers to search the deepest places: dense jungles, deep trenches in the oceans, deep and dark caves in the mountains; they got tired but couldn’t find Guru ji.  They were all shocked.  They all got together and did an Ardaas.  They then bowed by lowering their necks.  Guru ji appeared right away.  The Sidhs were amazed.  Their power was nothing in front of Guru ji.  They were embarrassed and didn’t say anything.  They were like angry thieves who used the full potential of their powers but got caught.  They wanted to show their powers but couldn’t.  They had no love in their hearts.  They didn’t fall to Guru ji’s feet.  They drowned in their egos.  They wanted to compare themselves to Guru ji.  They were angry.  The Sidhs burned in jealousy.  They had no love.  How could they be saved?  The fire did not extinguish.  It flamed higher.  They took on many forms.  Some became lions and some became panthers.  Some spewed fire and shouted harsh words.  Some walked on the walls and some wore deerskins and flew towards the sky.  Some became snakes and pythons, showing scary forms.  They jumped and hissed.  Some made their bodies really big.  Some flew upwards and had fire in their hands.  They yelled in anger.  Many gathered in the sky and made it rain fire onto the earth.  Some walked on the water of the Sarovar like a boat.  Some became really small and couldn’t be seen.  They used Mantra and Jantras.  There was a great crowd there.  They scared everyone.  The people were scared.  Seeing the scary forms, the people were terrified.  Many ran away, losing their patience.  Guru ji gave them all hope.  Guru ji said to Bhai Ajitha ji: “go around all the people and make a line around them saying Vahiguru.”  Bhai Ajitha ji got up and made a line around the people.  He was very powerful too.  He went into the Sarovar and laid out a cloth.  The cloth did not get wet.  He sat on the cloth like he was sitting on a boat.  The birds that had died the night before, Bhai Ajitha ji picked them up and made them alive again.  He made them fly again.  The people all saw this.  The line that was made around the people, the Sidhs couldn’t come close to it, who were snakes and spewing fire.  They showed their powers from the outside.  They made scary faces and yelled.  They were regretting the fact that their powers did not work.  They couldn’t enter the line.  Guru ji separated his elements again.  The Sidhs got tired.  They used their powers to find Guru ji.  When Guru ji looked towards the Sidhs, he took all of their powers away.  It was like squeezing a lemon dry; like crushing a sugar cane; the Sidhs were powerless and angry.  They all sat humbly.  They were embarrassed and quiet.  It was like a king arresting a thief.  All of their egos were gone.  It was like a king had taken the kingdom of an enemy.  They were embarrassed amongst the people there.  The highest Sidhs were embarrassed.  Mangal Nath, Praan Nath and the others, they were all happy to see this.  They said: “they didn’t listen to us.  Now they are humbled.  Their ego is destroyed.”

2-40 Sidh Gosht/ Sant Balka Tarkhaan/ Malo Sheikh

Oh mind, let go of your laziness and do the effort of Naam.  It will be with you in this world and in the Parlok.  It will complete all of your tasks.

Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..

Listen, oh Light of the Tehan Clan, the Sidhs sat in front of Guru Nanak Dev ji.  Bhai Ajitha ji was showing his powers to all by making the dead birds alive again.  Many people saw this.  Guru ji looked that way as well.  The Prabhoo spoke: “who is it that is making the birds alive again?  Who is sitting on a piece of cloth in the Sarovar, not getting wet, and showing off his powers?  This person is trying to make themselves look big in front of the people.”  The Sidhs said: “it’s one of your followers.  We haven’t seen anyone like him in this time.  The powers are only in your home.  You can show them as you wish.”  Guru ji sent a person to call Bhai Ajitha ji.  As soon as Guru ji looked at him, he pulled all of his powers and left him with nothing.  Everyone had their powers taken away.  They all sat with humility.  Their minds were depressed as their powers were all gone.  It was as though a merchant lost his stock, becoming poor and in regret.  Guru ji didn’t say anything for a long time.  The Sidhs and Bhai Ajitha ji sat there.  Bhai Ajitha ji had become really powerful from doing Guru ji’s Seva.  Many men and women came to do Guru ji’s Darshan.

A Tarkhaan had come to see Guru ji.  He had a 12-year-old son with him.  They bowed to Guru ji’s feet.  The Tarkhaan said: “I have one son in my home.  This is by the radiance of your Satsangat.  By your blessing, he is alive.  I am giving him to you now.  You made him alive again.”  Guru ji said: “how did I make him alive again?”  The Tarkhaan said: “I will tell you: every time I would have a son, it would die after a fer months.  We went to many Sidhs and Peers.  Hearing your praise, we made a promise in our hearts that if a son remains alive, we will give him to you.  My son survived so I bring him to you now, Guru ji.  When he dies, it’s up to you now.”  The Master heard this and then had wood gathered in one place.  Guru ji burnt the wood and then said: “child, go into the fire.”  The name of the child was Sangtiya.  The men and women were all surprised.  They didn’t understand Guru ji’s way.  They said: “the Tarkhaan has one son who he gave to Guru ji.  Guru ji wants to put him into the fire.  This is so surprising.”  When the child was commanded to go into the fire, the Sidhs, men and women watched.  The child’s mind did not have doubt.  He was patient.  He didn’t think about the pain from the fire.  The 12-year-old boy jumped into the fire.  He stayed in the fire.  He was patient.  The fire and heat did not touch the boy.  He sat in the fire for about 4 hours.  Everyone was amazed to see this.  Guru ji was impressed.  To bless him, Guru ji said: “you are free from taking births and dying.  The bonds of Jumms are broken for you.  Come out of the fire now.  You are blessed from now on.”  As soon as the boy heard this, his gates of doubt opened.  His doubts were gone.  His ego was destroyed.  He had the Divine Vision of all 3 Loks.  He could see everything, hidden or revealed.  The sorrow of dying and birth was gone.  Sri Guru ji said: “ask for what you wish for, child.  I will give you without delay.”  The boy folded his hands and said: “the Sidhs that are close to you, give them back their powers by being compassionate.  Your Sikh, Bhai Ajitha ji, who is humble and depressed by being empty, they are sitting worried.  They are like a person who lost all their money.”  Guru ji said: “they were all showing their powers to show off for their own ego.  It is not good to give them powers.  Their minds were drowning in ego but I can’t refuse what you wished for.  I will make them all as they were before.”  The Sidhs, men and women were amazed.  “The boy is generous!  He is altruistic.  He is radiant.  He had everyone forgiven.”  Everyone got their powers back as they were before.  Everyone was happy.  They said: “Sri Guru ji, you are Dhan!  Your praises can’t be said.  Sikhi is Dhan and your Sikhs are Dhan!  They help others, seeing them in pain.”  The Sidhs lost their ego.  They didn’t quarrel with Guru ji again.  Their bad wisdom was calm.  They said: “you are the indestructible Purakh.”  They praised Guru ji in many ways.

The Sidhs asked Guru ji: “how powerful are you Tappa ji?  Tell us.  We haven’t seen anyone like you.  You are different then other great beings.”  Guru ji said: “understand the greatness of Satnam.  The Ikankaar Prabhoo is complete and is the treasure of blessings.  As big as the Master is, that is how big his gift is.  You can’t find his end or his power.  He is compassionate and the light form.  The Sri Kartaar is beyond beautiful.  Whom he looks upon with blessings, he gives them the Naam.  Their ego and disrespect are all destroyed then.  They receive the highest status with bliss.  The greatness of the Satguru is really high.  Their secret and end cannot be found.”  Guru ji then said a Salok:

Salok M:1..

If I dressed myself in fire, and built a house of snow, and made food of iron (the strongest kind); if I were to make all the pain of the world into water and drink it, and drive the entire earth before me;

If I were to place the sky upon a scale and balance it with a single copper coin; if I were to become so big that I could not be contained, if I were to control all;

If I were to possess so much power within my mind that I could cause others to do what I wish.   As Great as our Lord and Master is, so great are His gifts.  He bestows them and satiates them.   O Nanak, those upon whom the Lord casts His Glance of Grace, they obtain the glorious greatness of the True Name. ||1||

(SGGS 147)

Everyone heard this Salok.  The Sidhs accepted this as the truth.  Gorakh Nath and the others became humble.  They folded their hands and bowed to Guru ji.  The other Sidhs asked for forgiveness.  Bhunger Nath did not bow.  He said: “the Ganga never flowed towards the west.  The sun never sets in the east.  The Sumer has never flown with wings.  We are Sidhs.  We will never bow to Ghristis.  This is impossible for me.”  Bhunger Nath said this and flew upwards like a bird.  Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji saw him with ego.  To destroy his ego, Guru ji made his own sandal fly up and hit Bhunger Nath in the head.  Bhunger Nath felt a lot of pain.  He flew higher.  The sandal went higher and hit him in the head again.  Every time he would stay still, he would get hit in the head.  He would run in every direction.  The Sandal chased him.  When he came towards Guru ji’s direction, the sandal would stop hitting him.  Bhunger Nath figured out the sandal was not going to stop.  There was nothing he could do to stop it.  He felt the pain and regretted it.  His ego was gone.  He was embarrassed.  He became humble and came down to where Guru ji was sitting.  He bowed to Guru ji’s lotus feet and sat down near him.

Gorakh Nath saw this and said to Bhunger Nath: “you couldn’t have been calm without doing all this.  In Kaliyuga, the Sri Kartaar took on a human form to make everyone do the Simran of his name.  He cannot be compared.  Bow to him so you are blessed.  Speak well and listen.  Ingrain the pure Gyaan in your heart.”  Gorakh Nath ji said to Guru ji: “what is the way of Kaliyuga?”  Sitting with the Sidhs, Guru ji said:

Salok M:1..

There is a famine of Truth; falsehood prevails, the blackness of Kali Yuga has turned men into demons.

The planted seeds (of Bhagti) have departed with honor; now, how can the shattered seed sprout?

If the seed is whole, and it is the proper season, then the seed will sprout.  O Nanak, without treatment, the raw fabric cannot be dyed.

In the Fear of God it is bleached white, if the treatment of modesty is applied to the cloth of the body.  O Nanak, if one is imbued with Bhagti, his reputation is not false. ||1||

(SGGS 468)

Sri Mukhvaak..

Salok M:1..

Kaliyuga is the Kaati sword, the kings are butchers; Dharma has sprouted wings and flown away.  In this dark night of falsehood, the moon of Truth is not visible anywhere.

I have searched in vain, and I am so confused; in this darkness, I cannot find the path.  In egotism, they cry out in pain.  Says Nanak, how will they be saved? ||1||

Salok M:1..

The Sattis sin and call themselves chaste.  The Gurus go to the students’ homes to give them knowledge.

The women and men love only for wealth; they come and go as they please.

No one obeys the Shastras or the Vedas.  Everyone worships themselves.  Becoming Qazis, they sit and administer justice.  They chant on their Tasbees, and call upon Khuddah.

They accept bribes, and block justice.  If someone asks them, they read quotations from their books.  The Muslim scriptures are in their ears and in their hearts.  They plunder the people, and engage in gossip and flattery.

They anoint pure kitchens to try to become pure.  Behold, such is the Hindu.  The Yogi, with matted hair and ashes on the body, sit in the homes of Ghristi householders.  The children weep in front of and behind.

He does not attain Yoga – he has lost his way.  Why did they put ash in their head?  O Nanak, this is the sign of the Dark Age of Kali Yuga; everyone says that he himself knows. ||1||

Guru ji did the Sidh Gosht, which is in Raag Ramkali, in Guru Granth Sahib ji.  He removed all of the doubts of the Sidhs.  He answered their questions.  The Sidhs bowed at Guru ji’s feet and praised him with joy.  Guru ji told the Sidhs the way of Kaliyuga.  The Sidhs saw Guru ji as Parmeshwar who came to make people chant the Naam.  He came to spread Bhagti.  “There is no one equal to him.  Whoever has faith in him, will receive Mukti.  Other than Prabhoo, nobody could defeat us.  Therefore, he can be no one else other than Prabhoo himself.”  They had faith in Guru ji now.  They bowed to the Master of the Universe.  The Sidhs took leave, saying “Adesh, Adesh.”  The Sidh Gosht was not discussed here because this would make this Granth really long.  The summary could not be described of what Guru ji discussed with the Sidhs.

The Mela was done and everyone began to leave.  People went to their own homes.  The Sant Balak grabbed Guru ji’s feet.  Guru ji put his hand on his hand and said: “whoever will meet you, they will receive Mukti.  You will do Simran of Satnam and make others do it too.  Stay with your parents.  Go to your father and mother.  Stay with them.  Many people will be saved because of you.  You will receive Mukti and so will the ones that follow you.”  Bhai Sangtiya ji obeyed and went home with joy.  Guru ji went back to Kartarpur.  Some Sangat came with him.

For may days, Guru ji sat in the Dharmsala and give his Darshan to the Sangat everyday.  Keertan happened everyday.  The Sangat came to do his Darshan and do their Ardaas.  Whatever wishes the people had, they would do Guru ji’s Darshan and have their wishes fulfilled.  The people of all of the villages and cities praised Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji.  They all said his name with respect.

A person named Malo Sheikh heard the praises of Guru ji and came to the Gem of the Bedis.  He did a Salaam to Guru ji and sat down near him.  He had jealousy in his mind.  He asked: “tell me, are the Hindus greater or the Turks?  Whose ideology is greater?  Tell me.  How can one achieve Mukti?  You are praised by all.”  Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “only the ones who are unwise, ask such questions.  You have doubts in your mind.  You don’t have good wisdom.  The unwise see Hindus and Turks as two different sides.  They don’t see the greater thing.  They debate and quarrel over false claims.  They never receive Mukti.  They suffer the punishment of the Jumms all the time.”  When Malo Sheikh heard this, he burned with jealousy.  He spoke in pride: “if nobody is Hindu or Turk then why did Khuddah make these two?  One prays to Khuddah and the other does the Simran of Ram.  They live in their own homes and have different customs of living.  One prays to the east and the other prays towards the west.  They all think their religions are better.”  Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji spoke: “the highest Bhagat is Bhagat Kabeer ji.  He was raised by Muslims.  Al-Kabeer is one of the 99 Names of Allah.  He is the most praised out of all the Bhagats.  There is no difference between Ram and Kabeer.  He gave wisdom to both Hindus and Muslims.  He got rid of the doubt for people in the best way.  According to the world, he was born in a Muslim home.  Listen to what he said: there is soil and there is one who made everything.  There is one Jot that lives in all.  Everything is made of the One so then why is their doubt in the heart?  Ikankaar and Khuddah are One.  Ram and Raheem or not two.  The forgotten ones are entangled in taking sides.  They remain in the cycle of birth and death.  The body is false and so is its pride and claim.  If you see Hindu and Turk, when the body breaks open, what name will you give the Aatma that comes out?  When you rid of the claims of the body, you will see Allah and Akaal as the same Sri Naam.  The claims are only done by hypocrites.  The world is false and so are its claims.  Everything you see will not exist one day.  Malo, for this reason, think about this in your heart: if you want to be blessed, then get rid of your doubts.”  Guru ji gave Malo Sheikh wisdom to get rid of his bad wisdom.  The Jagtesha looked at Malo Sheikh and blessed him.  Guru ji’s words destroyed Malo’s hypocrisy.  Malo Sheikh was in bliss.  He bowed to Guru ji’s lotus feet.  He was really happy and felt at peace.  He became humble and said: “I now know that you are the Gunkhaani.  I am now your Mureed.  I heard your words and my doubts are now destroyed.  You are Khuddah who came within a human form.  You erased the prise, duality and hypocrisy.  You are now my Peer.  Doing your Darshan, I am at peace.  In my heart, your form shines like the sun.  Live in my heart.  Your words are like the rays.  Destroy the darkness of attachment in my mind.  Make the twinkling stars in my heart disappear.  I wish to question you one more question.  The court of Khuddah, who is honoured there?  Who is rejected and who is accepted?  Tell me the characteristics of the person so I may not be rejected.”  Sri Guru ji said: “the one who rejects the claims of duality and accepts the will of Vahiguru; in Kaliyuga, the one who praises the Naam, they are accepted and honoured in the court.  They see joy, sorrow, respect and disrespect as the same.  They aren’t rejected anywhere.  They are drenched in truth.  They speak the truth.  Their hearts are soft.  They are generous and think well for all.  They see pain and joy as the same.”  Hearing Sri Guru ji’s wisdom, the Peer became Guru ji’s humble Mureed.  He had love in his heart.  He stayed with Prabhoo ji for some days and then went home.  He meditated on Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji all the time.  Wherever he sat, he praised Guru ji.
