2-31 Tradition of Sikhi/ Shuh Suhaagan/ Moola/ The Peer of Uch

I am without good Karma.  I lie.  I am greedy; full of lust and bad in every way.  Please honour your promise towards the one that comes to your sanctuary.  People call me your Sikh.

Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..

Listen Sri Guru Angad Dev ji to the great praises of Guru Nanak Dev ji.  Listen to how the pure Katha happened.  Guru ji started the great tradition of Keertan.  Guru ji would wake up 4 and a half hours before sunrise (around 2 am), everyday.  Many servants and Sikhs would come to do Keertan at that time.  They did Guru ji’s Darshan and received many rewards.  Many came and stayed with Guru ji.  They only wanted to do Seva.  Many would listen to Guru ji’s words and go home.  Langar was given at all times.  Guru ji started this tradition and made it permanent.  Keertan started in the last watch of the night.

Guru ji got ready to travel west, after some time.  Within the beautiful Dharamsala in Kartarpur, Satsang was the regular tradition.  Sadhoos and saints were told to stay there to take care of the traditions.  Guru ji took Bhai Mardana ji and myself with him.  Guru ji gave love to everyone along with hope: “we will meet again in a few days.  Do Keertan here in this place.”  The Master of the Universe walked slowly towards the west.  Bhai Mardana ji and I followed him.  We reached Sialkot and set up a Dhera.  We sat there for a long time, under a Ber Tree.  Guru ji said to Bhai Mardana ji: “take a golden Takka and go to the city.  Buy truth and false and bring it back.”  Bhai Mardana ji obeyed and went to the city.  He went to the market and asked around from different shops: “if you have the truth and false, take this golden Takka and give it to me.”  He asked the whole market but nobody agreed to his offer.  When Bhai Mardana ji asked a merchant, the merchant took the Takka and wrote on a piece of a paper: “life is a lie; death is the truth.”  Bhai Mardana ji took the paper and came back to Guru ji.  Where Prabhoo ji was, Bhai Mardana ji said: “I wandered around and nobody had what I was looking for.  One merchant then gave me this paper for the golden Takka.  I don’t know what he wrote.”  Guru ji looked at the paper and said: “this is definitely a good deal but call the seller to me.”  Bhai Mardana ji went back to the shop and told the merchant: “the stuff you sold was known to be good by the buyer.  He praised it.  He is sitting outside of the city under a tree.  He is calling for you.  Come and meet him once.  You can then come back to your store.”  The merchant heard this and went to where Guru ji was sitting.  The merchant saw Guru ji and noticed that he was a Fakir who could destroy the pains.  He bowed to Guru ji’s feet and sat by him with love in his heart.  The Light of the Bedis spoke: “tell me oh Shahukaar, what is your name?  Whose wisdom do you have in your heart?  You see life as a lie and death as the truth, how did you know this?  Did you write this to get the money?”  The merchant folded his hands and said: “oh complete saint, Giver of Mukti: my name is Moola in this world.  The Gyaan you speak of, this is according to you.  You can make that person know whom you wish to.  You can tell everyone what the truth and false is.  I am really greedy for money.  I wrote this on a paper for the golden Takka, for the money.  I do wish to know what the truth about what I wrote is, though.  I can’t have the faith till I meet a complete saint.”  Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “if you wish to know the truth, then stay with me.  The Master of the Universe will fulfill your wish.”  Moola obeyed and stayed with Guru ji.  He followed Guru ji and travelled with us.  Guru ji went to another place to give wisdom to other people.

The people of the new place were in pain by their hypocritical ways.  Guru ji sat in the village where many Turks lived.  It was the Dooj night of the moon (2nd night from new moon).  A lot of people gathered that night.  It was crowded.  People brought Sheernis as offerings to a fake Fakir.  He would tell everyone: “on the 2nd night after the new moon (Dooj ki Raat), the Shuh (Prabhoo-husband) comes to me.”  Dhundhabs and Naubats would play at his door on that night.  A great celebration would happen.  He would lay a beautiful bed out.  He would light many lights.  He called himself the “Shuh Suhaagan” (the wife of the Master Prabhoo).  He had his name and respect spread throughout the people.  Many people brought offerings that night.  They would become humble and bow to the Fakirs.  His guards wouldn’t let anyone go inside the home.  The people would bow at the Fakir’s door.  He had huge flags posted outside his Dhera.  There was a lot of celebration at his Dhera.  The Fakir would dress up like a woman with nice clothes and jewellery.  He would sit in his room quietly.  Many people would gather at his door.  Many instruments played.  The True Prabhoo came to this place.  There was an old woman’s home where Guru ji stayed.  The Omniscient One knew everything.  He asked the old woman: “what is this noise in the city?  Many people have gathered in one place.”  The old woman said: “a great Fakir lives here.  The people have gathered at his door.  There is a lot of joy and celebration at his door today.  His name is “Shuh Suhaagan.”  Guru ji heard the name and laughed.  He said: “Mardana, let’s go and see him.”  The Master and the three of us (including Bhai Moola), we came to the Fakir’s home.  Guru ji stood at the door and saw the great big crowd.  Nobody was going inside the home though.  Everyone bowed from the door.  Sri Prabhoo ji was about to enter the home.  One of the guards said to Guru ji: “nobody is allowed to go inside.  Bow to the door and leave.”  Guru ji said: “go and tell the Fakir that a Darvesh has come to his door.  He wishes to have your Darshan.  If it be your permission, the Darvesh wishes to see you.”  The guard went inside and said to the Fakir: “Darveshes have come to your door.  They wish to see you.  What ever is your command, we can tell them.  They can come and meet you.”  The hypocritical Fakir responded: “stop them!  Keep them at the door.  The Shuh is giving me his Darshan today.  I don’t see anyone besides the Khuddah today.”  The guards came out and told Guru ji of the Fakir’s response.  Guru ji laughed out loud.  He was the destroyer of hypocrisy.  He said: “there is nothing here Mardana.  This is all a lie.  This is a façade.  He will be destroyed once we leave.  He has fooled many people.”

When Guru ji turned around, a fight broke out in the Mela.  Swords swung in every direction.  Many fell down.  Blood was all over the place.  Many were cut.  Many died.  Many walked around injured.  Looting began near the home.  The strong ones looted the stuff.  Where the home of the fake Fakir was, people came there and looted his home.  His money was all stolen.  He had a lot of gifts that were also looted without delay.  The people pushed through the doors.  When they went inside, they saw the Fakir on a bed with a beautiful woman.  The foolish Fakir was making love to her like a really lusty person.  The people saw this and got angry.  They said: “beat up this fake Fakir!”  Some beat up the Fakir with a stick.  They looted his stuff inside the home.

The Master of the sentient and non-sentient world, the Fakir disrespected him.  The Fakir was in a bad condition.  This was not a surprising thing.  The flags from the Fakir’s Dhera were taken away.  The offerings were stolen.  Where the Fakir was laying on the bed, the bed was taken.  His guards ran away.  Jewellery and clothes that the Fakir had were stolen.  People called the Fakir a fake: “his name was Suhaagan but in reality, he was a “Rundy.”  He collected many things by lying.  His façade has been exposed.  He used to disrespect everyone who bowed to him with love.”  Everyone saw the Fakir as a corrupt person.  The foolish Fakir thought to himself: “the saints that came to my door were high beings.  I disrespected them and that’s why my respect is all gone now.”  He wandered the city, embarrassed.  Nobody would let him into their homes.  Guru ji stayed there for one night and travelled on.

Bhai Moola ji, Bhai Mardana ji and I followed Guru Nanak Dev ji with eagerness.  We reached a placed known as “Uch.”  Many Syeds lived there.  The Avinashi Satguru sat outside the city.  It was evening and so he rested.  At Amritvela, he bathed and started to do Keertan in a loud voice.  A Sindhi person came close to us and stopped to listen.  He listened with love.  He listened with care and stood with focus.  The Gurbani was calming to him: “Gurmukh Nadhang Gurmukh Vedang.”  When the Prabhoo said this, the Sindhi did not understand the meaning of the line.  He kept thinking in his mind about the meanings.  He listened to the whole Shabad and went to his own Peer.  The Peer of the Sindhi was there.  The Sindhi memorized the line from Gurbani.  He recited the line to himself, over an over again on the way.  He was in doubt about the line.  The Peer asked the Sindhi when he arrived: “why are you late?  Who did meet and whom did you sit with?”  The Sidhi said to his Peer: “I saw a Hindu Fakir on the way.  I heard his Bani which was the treasure of virtues and the Giver of Mukti.  I couldn’t understand one line though.  I thought about it a lot but I couldn’t understand it.”  The Sindhi said the line to his Peer.  After hearing the line, the Peer said: “request him to come here.  I want to do his Darshan.”  The Sindhi went back to Prabhoo ji and bowed.  He requested Guru ji with humility while standing up.  He said to Guru ji: “Mainda Peer sadainda toko.  Baat Bujainda bheja moko.  Vat ghinan mai aayo dhai.  Jul Darvesh; Peer Jih Thai – My Peer as calling for you.  He wants to ask you something.  He sent me to you.  Then, I came to take you.  Come Darvesh to where my Peer’s place is.”  Guru ji heard the Sindhi and went with him.

The Master came to the Peer.  The Peer got up and respected Guru ji.  He grabbed Guru ji’s hands and kissed them.  He said: “Salaam alaikum Peer!”  Guru ji met the Peer with love.  They were happy to see each other.  They sat face-to-face with each other.  To remove his doubt, the Peer said: “you are Khuddah’s person, tell me the truth: how is the Darbar of Khuddah?  Everyone has to go to that court one day.  Nobody can stay in this world forever.”  Satguru ji said: “listen Peer ji: understand this with determination; who remain connected with their body and mind, they do not fall into the traps of the world.  Their minds are drenched in the colour of the love of the Prabhoo all the time.  They are not stuck in the vices and desires.  They leave this world with honour.  They are honoured in the court of Khuddah as well.  The ones who wear religious clothes but have corruption in their hearts, they are blind from their minds.  They are unwise fools.  They are stuck in lust, anger, greed, attachment and ego.  They are under the command of these 5 vices.  They have no place in the Darbar of Khuddah.  They keep coming into this world because of their doubt of self.  The 8.4 million species, they come and go into them with pain.”  The Sindhi spoke with love as his question was not being answered: “both of you are busy speaking to each other with love in a great way but my reason for calling you has not been fulfilled.  Peer ji, the line of Bani I told you about, can you ask him about the translation.”  The Peer heard this and said: “you are omniscient.  I know this.  This Sindhi had a question about your Bani.  He asked me over and over again.  Please remove his doubt and translate the line.  He praised you and that’s when I told him to bring you.  It was because of him that I got your Darshan.  My life is a success that I met you.”  Guru ji spoke with sweet words to the Peer: “listen (Peer) Jalal, I will tell you an easy way: the correct key can open the correct lock.  Another key won’t work.”  The Peer said: “please remove his doubt.”  Guru ji said: “then do as I say and you will get your answer.  Go to Mecca.  You will be fulfilled.  If you want to know the meanings now, then go to Mecca now.  Don’t delay.”  Peer Jalal heard this and said: “please stay here till then.  I will go and find the meanings for this.  I will come quickly.”  Guru ji said: “I will stay here.  Go and find out the meanings.  Don’t be long.”  Jalal obeyed and called his Mureeds.  He said to his followers: “serve this Darvesh till I come back.”  He bowed to Guru ji’s feet and headed to Mecca.  Prabhoo ji stayed in the Dhera of the Peer.  After a few days, Guru ji said to Moola: “a man who is against you, he has come to your home today.  He lied to your wife out of jealousy.  He said to her: “I have heard from somewhere that Moola, who went with the Fakirs, has died on the way all of a sudden.”  Your wife heard this and prepared the Sidhaura (a coconut with vermillion, for burning widows).  She is getting ready to be cremated alive.  She has prepared for everything.  She is going to become a Sati for your love.  If you go to her now, you will save her and your home.  Otherwise you can stay here and take on Bairaag.  If your Bairaag has become determined, then stay here.  Don’t worry about your home.”  Bhai Moola ji heard this and was in shock.  He lost his patience in attachment.  He said: “but my home is really far from here!  How can I get to her quickly?  It will take days to go back.  My wife will be dead by then.  She will be ashes by then.  Only you can save her.  I am in your sanctuary.  Save my honour.  If you send me home, my wife will be saved.  You are omnipotent.  You are capable in every way.  I have no other support other than you.”  Guru ji smiled after hearing this.  He laughed and said: “if this is what you feel, then close your eyes and go meet your wife.”  Bhai Moola ji obeyed and closed his eyes.  When he opened his eyes, he was sitting in his home in Sialkot.  He saved his wife from being burnt alive.  When his wife saw Bhai Moola ji, everyone learnt the truth and went on with their lives.  Bhai Moola ji started to live his life as he did before; working and making a living.

2-32 Jalal gets Wisdom/ The Meanings of Gurmukh

Let go of the false supports in life and seek the support of the Satguru.  Remove the filth of the vices and destroy the cycle of birth and death.

Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..

Now listen to what happened to Jalal, oh Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, the Virtuous One.  Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji stayed at the Peer’s home.  The Peer Jalal had left to Mecca.  As he came to the shores of the ocean, a ship came to take him.  He boarded the ship and sat down.  The ship sailed off and soon touched the other shore.  Jalal got off the ship and climbed a mountain.  He wanted to see the mountain.  He saw many beautiful homes on the mountain.  The homes had beautiful beds in them.  He didn’t see any people though.  He was confused in his mind about this.  He thought to himself: “I will see in the evening.  I will sleep on the bed and eat good food.”  He came to the shore of the ocean and sat down.  He saw an interesting thing there: he saw a sinking ship.  As the ship was sinking, there were a lot of shouting and yelling.  The Peer heard this.  Many people were yelling.  At that time, Jalal folded his hands and made a request to Khuddah: “there are many people on this ship from many lands.  Some left their sons and some left their daughters to do business.  Oh Khuddah, why are you sinking them?  They will all die with their families.”  As the Peer said this, the ship was saved from sinking.  The Peer spent the whole day thinking.  He thought to himself: “let’s go to the homes with nice beds.  Who knows who the owners are who sleep on those beds at night.”  The Peer went to the homes.  As he came into the home, he saw saints and great beings sitting on the beds.  He went to one of the saints and sat down with humility.  As he sat, food from nature came for everyone from the sky.  Sweet and delicious foods came.  They were like honey.  The Peer didn’t get any food.  Nothing came from the Parmeshwar for him.  The saints saw this and said: “why didn’t you get food from the Parmeshwar?”  One of the saints went to the Mahant of the saints and said: “there is a Fakir sitting next to me who didn’t get any food.  Oh Master, how can we eat without him eating?  Please tell us your command.  You should request food for the Peer.”  The Mahant heard this and said: “the Jeevs, walking and standing; the Kartaar is everyone’s master.  He gives food to all.  He never forgets.  Know this.  The Peer must have done something wrong.  You shouldn’t be worried about anything.  The giver is not unwise.  He knows everything.  You got food.  Go and eat it.  If food comes to him, he will eat.”  The saint heard the Mahant and came back to his place.  He sat and ate his food.

Jalal spent the night hungry.  He thought to himself: “I haven’t seen these saints come back.  I will see where they go.  I wonder where they go.”  He thought about this all night long.  He didn’t sleep during the night.  As the morning came, the Peer fell into a deep sleep.  The saints left and Jalal had no idea where they all went.  When he woke up, he was amazed.  As the sun came up, the Peer came to the shore and saw another drama.  He saw rain in the ocean.  It wasn’t raining in any other place where the land was dry.  The Syed Peer spoke to Khuddah: “where rain is not needed, you are making it rain.  Where the rain is needed, you didn’t make it rain there.  The people are asking you for rain but you are not making it rain there.”  As he said that, it stopped raining in the ocean.  He thought in his mind with ego: “whatever I say comes out to be true.”  He thought to himself in the evening: “I will see where the saints come from.  I didn’t see them leave in the morning.”  He saw the evening time and went to where the beds were.  When he went inside the homes, he saw the saints sitting down there.  He couldn’t tolerate their radiance.  He sat in the same place he sat the day before.  Food came from the sky for the saints.  Jalal was really hungry.  He looked towards the faces of the saints.  The saint near him saw Jalal as hungry.  He got worried and thought to himself: “he is hungry.  Food didn’t come to him again.”  He went to his Mahant and told him the whole story.  The leader of the Rishis said: “bring him to me.”  The saint came to Jalal and took him to the Mahant.  As the Peer sat down, the Mahant said to him: “where did you come from and where are you going?  What big sin did you do?  You spent two days without food.”  Jalal heard this and said: “I came from a far away land.  I didn’t do anything wrong.  If I did, I would have told you.”  The Mahant said: “Kartaar is the greatest giver.  It is not good to call him wrong.  Decide for yourself if you made a mistake.  You haven’t received food for two days now.  Have you been hungry before?  Have you sat and done this before?”  Jalal said: “how?  I’ve never been hungry before.  I sat near the shore yesterday and saw an interesting thing: one ship was about to sink.  The people yelled for help.  I then said out loud: “what are you doing Khuddah?  These people will die and so will their families.  Save them!”  The ship didn’t sink then.  Today, I saw another interesting thing: I saw rain in the ocean but no rain on the dry land.  It was raining where it was not needed.  Not a drop fell where it was needed.  Seeing this I said: “it is not raining where it is desired.  Without the wish, it is raining in the ocean.  It is raining where there is already water.  Khuddah, you did an unorthodox thing.”  As I said this, it stopped raining.  I saw both things as unorthodox.  I fixed both things with my words.”  The Mahant heard this and spoke in anger: “you are a Bemukh!  There is no place for you to stay here!  Leave here at once!  Your wisdom is bad.  Your life is useless!”  The Peer got scared when he heard this.  He trembled in fear.  He folded his hands and said: “what did I do that was wrong?  Please tell me Sant ji.”  The Mahant said: “Parmeshwar does as he wills.  You stopped him and became happy because of that.  You think your words are followed by Khuddah.  You have ego in your heart.  You erased the command of Prabhoo.  You are trying to be his relative.  You are unfortunate.  The people had sinned in many births.  You didn’t let the Parmatma give them their punishments.  There are many life forms in the ocean who don’t drink the salty water of the ocean.  It was raining for them.  You stopped that.  The life forms will die of thirst.  You will go to Hell for that.  You saw the Parmeshwar as unwise.  You think you are wiser.  You are a Bemukh.  Get up and leave at once.  There is no place for you to stay here.”  Jalal heard this and understood everything.  He regretted his actions and said: “the ones who obey His will, how are they?  Tell me the answer.”  The Mahant said: “the ones who accept His will, they are Gurmukhs.  They are really wise.  The ones who try to erase His will, they are Bemukhs and suffer great pain.”  Jalal then said: “I understand the meanings now.  I don’t need to go to Mecca anymore.  I am satisfied by coming here.  I met a Darvish at my place.  He spoke about the Gurmukh.  I was on my way to Mecca to understand the meanings of his words.  I received the answer from you.”  The Mahant said: “that Darvesh you speak of, he is the Complete Purakh Jagtesha.  He is omnipotent and omniscient.  He knows every heart.  Go to his shelter with your mind and words.”  Jalal heard this and understood the secret.  He saw Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji as Khuddah.  As soon as he understood everything, food came for Jalal from the sky.  He ate the food and spent the night in joy.

In the morning, he wished to cross the ocean.  As he came to the shore, a ship came for him.  He boarded the ship and sailed across.  He came to the next shore quickly.  He came back to where Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji was sitting.  He grabbed Guru ji’s feet with humility and said: “you are Khuddah.  You are omnipotent.”  He praised Guru ji and sat by him.  Sri Guru ji said: “tell me the meanings that you have heard.  Tell me Jalal what you heard.”  The Peer folded his hands and said: “you know everything.  If you didn’t know then you could ask me.  You know every heart.”  Sri Guru ji said: “tell me of what happened to you.”  Jalal obeyed and said everything: “the one who accepts the will of Khuddah is the Gurmukh.  The ones who erase the will are the Bemukhs.  I was unwise about this before.  I understood this after meeting you.”  Guru ji gave wisdom to the Peer of Uch, Jalal.  The Master of the Universe got ready to leave.  The Peer bowed and said: “I am your servant by my actions, mind and words.”  Sri Guru ji gave him hope and then left.  Guru ji’s mission was to save the people by giving them the wisdom of Bhagti, Gyaan and wisdom.  Till today, the Peers of Uch still follow Guru Nanak Dev ji’s teachings.  They do not cut their hair.  It has been their tradition ever since, not to cut their hair.

2-33 Speaking with Sheikh Ibrahim Fareed Saani

Do the Simran of the Naam.  Your tasks will be completed.  You won’t go to the home of the Jumms.  If you know your real beautiful form, you will be in peace.

Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..

Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, listen to the pure history.  Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji travelled on to the city of Pakpattan of Sheikh Fareed ji.  During Bhagat Fareed ji’s time the city was known as Ajodhan.  Sheikh Brahm (Ibrahim) was in the line of successors of Bhagat Fareed ji during the time of Guru Nanak Dev ji.  In Gurmat Granths, Sheikh Ibrahim is known as Sheikh Brahm because Guru Nanak Dev ji gave him Brahmgyaan.  To meet Sheikh Brahm, Guru ji sat about 2 Kos away from the city.  A Mureed of Sheikh Brahm was collecting firewood where Guru ji was sitting.  He was a beloved Darvesh of Khuddah.  He had only Bandagi in his heart.  Prabhoo ji uttered a Salok seeing the Darvesh.  He sang it in a loud voice:

M:1..

You are the slate and you are the pen; you are the writer and the writing as well..

Only speak of the One, Nanak, why speak of a second..2..

(SGGS 1291)

The Darvesh came to Guru ji and did his Salaam after hearing the Shabad.  He said: “this Baint you just sang, please say it again.  You are the Darvesh of Khuddah or Khuddah himself.”  Guru ji said: “he is the slate and pen himself.  There is no other writer that I can see.  The One Khuddah is in everyone.  There is no place empty of Him.  I don’t see another nor have I heard of another.  If you do his Simran, you will be saved.”  The Sheikh was happy to hear this.  He went to his Peer and said: “I have seen Khuddah in a body today.  He is born as a Hindu and is named Sri Guru Nanak Bedi ji.  He gives the news of Allah which destroys the duality.”  Peer Shiekh Brahm said: “how can Khuddah be a Hindu?”  The Mureed folded his hands and said: “he is the form of Khuddah.  I am not lying.  I say the truth.  When you see him, you will believe me.  You won’t believe me till you don’t see him.  You will meet him and love him.”  The Peer said: “take my Baint and say it to him:

There is one Sahib and two boundaries.  Which is deserving of being served, which should not be followed?”  The Mureed took the Baint to Guru Nanak Dev ji.  He came and said: “when I read your Baint to my Peer, my Peer spoke of another Baint.  Please give me the response.  I will say it to you:

Sahib eko do kiy hudh.  Kih ko Sevi, kih ko rudh..

What is your ideology, please be compassionate and say it to me.”  Guru ji heard this and said a Salok:

Salok..

Why do Simran of another, who will born and die..

Do the Simran of the One, who lives in the water and the land..1..

(Sri Nanak Prakash Granth)

Listen, your Peer sees duality and hasn’t recognize Khuddah.  He is not on the Path of Khuddah.  Destroy the two boundaries and only serve the One, who is the controller of all.  Only the One Khuddah lives in all.  Without knowing this, meeting him is too far away for you.  There is no Mussalman nor Hindu.  There is only One Khuddah that created everything.  Those who are caught up in taking sides, they see two boundaries.”  When the Mureed heard Guru ji’s words, he came back to his Peer again.  He gave him his answer.  The Peer said: “son, the meaning of this, did you understand it or not?  This Darvesh is really powerful.  Understand him.  He has no duality and only sees the One.  He meets the Khuddah with wisdom.  Take me to him.  I want to meet him and be in bliss.”

The Mureed led the way.  The Peer came in his palanquin.  When he saw Sri Guru ji, he got off his palanquin and walked to him.  He came and said: “Salaamalaykum.”  He sat near Guru ji with love in his heart.  He said: “please tell me what is the way of the afterlife.”  Guru ji said: “in the court, the truthful ones receive respect.  The liars and fake ones don’t get a place there.  They are born again and die in the 84 lakh species.  The noose of the Jumms is always around their necks.”  Sri Guru ji sat in front of Sheik Brahm ji and knew what was in his heart.  Sheikh ji was facing West towards the Mecca as he regarding Mecca as the supreme.  Guru ji was facing east.  To give him the good wisdom, the Master of the World said: “you see Khuddah in the Kabbah only.  You don’t see him anywhere else.  You look for him like looking for something in the water.  You won’t be able to meet him like this even after looking for a million births.”  The Peer said: “Sri Guru Nanak Tappa ji, the Deen of the Turks says that he is in the Kabbah.  That’s why I have faith in the Kabbah.  I see him there.”  Guru ji said: “if this is how you see him, then you are forgotten.  He won’t come to you like this.  It is useless to churn water, that’s what you are doing.”  The Peer said: “listen Guru Nanak Dev ji, my mind was happy to hear your Baint.  I thought in my mind that I should meet you, who said such a Baint.  I wanted to do your Darshan so I came quickly.  From 2 boundaries, you showed the One, and told me to serve him.  I have faith.  My doubts are leaving as I listen to your words with my ears.  I am becoming calmer.  Your words are like a bridge across this world.  This is destroying my duality.  Your words are like sharp arrows.  My Agyaan is the target.  Your arrows pierce my Agyaan and destroy it.  Please tell me the answer to this.  Destroy my doubt:

Salok Fareed..

Oh Fareeda, to rip a silk cloth to pieces and wear a brown shawl..

All these clothes, wear what will help you meet Him..103..

(SGGS 1383)

You speak of the One Khuddah, how can I meet him?  Taking off my clothes and going to the jungle, leaving the attachment of my family; wearing a Khintha around my neck; not show my face to my sons and daughters again; how can I meet the Khuddah, please tell me.  How can I serve him by which the hold of the Jumms is gone.”  Guru ji heard the Peer’s words and said a Salok:

Salok M:1..

The women is unwise and thinks the husband is in a foreign land, she is depressed thinking of this..

There is no delay meeting him if the woman’s intentions are good..1..

(SGGS 594)

For what reason should you take your clothes off or leave your home?  He meets you in your home if your faith is deep.  Listen Shiekh, the woman stays at home.  If her husband went to a foreign land, the woman thinks of her husband and has unwavering faith on him; her husband will come to the home, seeing her love.  The woman that loves her husband, the husband loves her and stays with her.  If the woman walks a bad path; she thinks of other men and forgets her husband; the husband forgets her too.  The wife walks around in pain.”  The Shiekh heard this and was at peace.  He asked about Khuddah:

Salok Fareed..

Fareed, the youthful woman who doesn’t think of the master.  When she was older, her wish was gone..

After dying, she yelled from her grave: I couldn’t meet you oh Master..54..

(SGGS 1380)

She didn’t think of her husband while she was young.  When she was old, her Indrees lost their strength.  When she was ready to die, it was too hard to meet the Master then.  She didn’t serve the husband before, how can she meet him now?”  Guru ji heard this and gave words of Gyaan to the Sheikh:

Salok M:1..

The woman with bad character is busy beautifying the body.  Her mind is black and impure..

If she has the good characteristics then she can meet the husband.  Nanak Says, she has too many vices..1..

(SGGS 1088)

The woman with bad character, she loves the vices.  The sins made her mind black.  She has duality in her heart which smells bad.  How can she enjoy the bed of her husband?  The Husband is wise and strong.  He is young and handsome.  The woman who he does not find attractive (without good character) he lets her go.  He only comes to the good-charactered woman.  She should have the good qualities.  Lust, anger, greed, ego and lies; this garbage should be discarded.  The husband loves the one who leaves these bad qualities.  Without the good qualities of Sat, Santokh, compassion, Dharma and patience; the woman is always empty.  The husband is not to blame.  The woman leaves the love and disobeys.  She is busy enjoying the pleasures of the vices.”  The Shiekh heard this and said:

Salok Fareed..

What is the technique, what is the quality, which is the mantra..

What is the form that I should take on by which the husband will be in my command..126..

To be humble, that is the technique, patience is the quality, sweet words of praise are the mantra..

Oh sister, do these 3 fashions; the husband will be in your command..127..

(SGGS 1384)

Listen Sheikh, stay humble in front of all.  This is the best technique.  The joy and sorrow that Parmeshwar gives, see them as the same.  This is the good quality.  The praise of the Kartaar with your mouth is the best Mantra.  The husband will be under your command then.  The Bhagwant blesses you then.”  The Sheikh said: “you had answered my questions but then spoke more confusing things.  The Seva, does that give you blessings?  Or is the Seva given due to blessings?  Please answer this.  Destroy my doubt.”  The Master heard this and said another Salok:

Salok M:1..

The one who serves the husband, the husband belongs to them..

The ego cannot impress the husband, even if she is really pretty and glorious..9..

(Sri Nanak Prakash Granth)

Have faith on these words: Seva is the root of everything.  Destroying the ego and doing Seva, giving your body and mind to the husband, along with everything, that is when the Parmeshwar will bless you.  The husband calls her to his home.  The one who has ego and doesn’t do Seva, even though she is pretty; the husband doesn’t come to her.  He does not like ego.  That woman is like she is left alone.  The one without ego is always married.  By the Seva, the Sahib lives in the heart.  He blesses the woman.  The woman enjoys the husband.  She meets her beloved.”  When the Peer heard Guru ji’s words, he touched Guru ji’s feet with faith.  He touched his own face then.  He saw himself as fortunate.  He said: “there is no doubt, I met Khuddah.  I made mistakes.  Please forgive me by your compassion.  There is no one above you.”  He said more words: “see me as your servant.”  Guru ji heard the Sheikh and said a Salok:

Salok M:1..

A lustful person is friends with Beauty; a hungry person is tied together to tasty food.

A Greedy person is bound to wealth, a sleepy person will use even a tiny space as a bed.

An angry person barks and brings ruin on itself, an unwise blind person causes conflicts.

It is good to be silent, O Nanak; without the Name, one’s mouth spews only filth. ||1||

(SGGS 1288)

The Lusty person loves beauty; the hungry person loves good food; the greedy person likes wealth; the sleepy person likes a bed.  This is how the Bhagat likes the discussions of Hari.  I liked your words.  You can ask me whatever you want to.”  Shiekh Brahm did the Katha of Hari with Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji.  He asked many questions.  Guru ji took the writings of Sheikh Fareed ji from Sheikh Brahm ji.  The Saloks that Guru ji uttered, they have not been written here as it would make this Granth quite big.  Guru ji uttered the first 9 Saloks and Pauris of Asa Vaar there to give Sheikh Brahm the wisdom.  Guru ji gave the Sheikh the highest status of Brahmgyaan.  The Sheikh became the Mureed of Guru ji.  He bowed to Guru ji’s feet with love.  Guru ji stayed in the Peer’s Dhera for some days.  They stayed with a lot of love.  Guru ji then took leave even though the Sheikh didn’t want him going.  The Master of the Universe set off.  The Katha will follow in the next Adhyaays.

2-34 Baghdad/ Blessing Peer Dastgir

Out of all the pleasures, the best is to listen to the Sri Gurmukh say the Naam.  It gives everlasting bliss.

Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..

Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, listen to the blissful Katha of Guru Nanak Dev ji, which shows the great path to Mukti.  The Deena Bandhu travelled to the great land of Baghdad.  Peer Dastgir lived there.  Everyone served the Peer and obeyed his commands.  He was really powerful and known to all.  Whatever wisdom he gave, the king and the people followed him.  He had many Mureeds who obeyed him and followed him.  To take his ego away, the Master went to him.  Guru ji went to the capital.  There was a small river outside the city.  Guru ji set up his Dhera there.  After spending the night there, Prabhoo ji woke up at Amritvela.  He bathed and recited Bani.  He praised the Sri Kartaar, whom no one can compare to: “Lakh Pataal Lakh Akaash.”  When the Giver of Joy recited this line, a Mureed of the Peer heard this line and came to Guru ji.  He was there to bathe at the river.  He was surprised to hear the line.  He started to think about what he heard: “what blasphemy is he spewing?  Who is he?  The Quran Ketaab does not say this.”  He came to Guru ji to challenge his words.  Where the Light of the Bedis was sitting, Bhai Mardana ji began to sing Keertan.  He played the Rabab and praised the Bhagwan.  The Mureed stood for a while, listening quietly and then went back to his Peer without saying anything.

The Mureed said to his Peer: “Sire, listen to a blasphemous thing: a Hindu Fakir sits outside the city.  He speaks blasphemy.  The Quran speaks of 14 Tabaqs (worlds).  You yourself told us this.  This Hindu Fakir speaks of Lakhs of Akaashes and Lakhs of Pataals.  He says there is no end to the number of worlds.  People are tired of looking.  I was shocked to hear this.  I couldn’t tolerate it.  He spoke against of what the Quran has written.  This Fakir is speaking a lie or he is unwise.  This is one shocking thing he said.  The other bad thing he did was that he began singing a Raag.  You have made the whole country stop singing Raags.  If someone comes close to you and disobeys you, the people far away will be shameless.  If this continues, your radiance will go less.  If you don’t do something about this, this will get out of hand.  The Fakir spoke blasphemy and needs to be punished severely.  If you don’t stop him, the Muslims will become Kafirs.”  Dastgir heard the harsh words and got angry.  He spread news in the whole city: “throw stones at the Fakir.  Everyone should go without delay.  The Fakir has not obeyed my command.  He came close to me and spoke lies.  If he goes away from here without being punished, he won’t be scared.  Baghdad is a great city.  This is a great place of Turks.  If sins happen here, nobody will keep the traditions.”  Obeying Dastgir’s command, seniors and children ran towards Guru ji.  They all picked up a stone and ran yelling.  Guru Nanak Dev ji heard the people coming and making loud noises.  Guru ji called out a loud Bhaang (call): “Nirankaar, Sat Sri Akaal, Gurbar Akaal, Ikankaar Kirpala.”  As soon as everyone heard this, men and women, they all went quiet and still.  They fell into a trance.  They lost their senses for some time.  Seeing this great power, the Peer heard of this and came himself.  He took many people with him.  He had the wish to defeat Guru ji.  Dastgir used his powers to wake up everyone that lost their senses.  He walked with ego to where Guru ji was sitting.  It was like a firefly going to attempt to destroy the radiance of the sun.  everyone got up and surrounded Guru ji.  They raised their arms to throw stones and Guru ji.  There were many people.  When they wanted to throw the stones, Prabhoo ji grunted and said: “Oankaar!”  The people who raised their arms, their arms froze in the air.  They couldn’t lower their arms.  They became like wood.  Everyone was shocked.  They were in pain.  Dastgir used his power in full strength but he failed in front of Guru ji.  He figured out that Guru ji was stronger than him.  It was like a small star trying to over power the radiance of the sun.  It was like a small twister being filled with pride and going in front of a great storm; he could not win.  Dastgir thought of this: “I can’t win him like this but I will defeat him in an argument.”  He came to Guru ji and said: “you speak blasphemy.  Who are you and where did you come from?  You show your great powers.  You spoke of Lakhs of Pataals to all.  You then sing Raags which makes the mind wander.  You sang it here.  These were both wrong things you did.  I don’t see you as a Darvish.  I want you to answer for these two sins you did.  Otherwise leave this land.”  The Destroyer of Ego, Guru ji, the Gunkhaani, spoke to Dastgir: “you slandered the Raag, listen to its tradition: it gives joy and makes the mind still.  I was singing the praises of Sri Kartaar ji.  The praises live in the heart if sung in Raag.  One can earn it then.  One will listen to the Raag and experience its pleasure and calming effect.  They will flourish and bloom when they hear it.  The Naam of Hari is sung in the Raag.  The Jagyaso will be happy to hear this.  The person will become one with the Sri Prabhoo ji, the Indestructible One.  There is no other way in Kaliyuga.  The Keertan, Rabab and Bhai Mardana ji came from Sach Khand, where the Sri Prabhoo lives.  The one who does Keertan, Crores will achieve Mukti.  For this reason, I have started the tradition of Raag.  One can sing praises in this pleasureful way.  The minds will be drenched in this Prema Bhagti.  You said that the Raag makes the mind wander and get stuck in vices; those who are stuck in lust, only their minds wander when hearing bad songs in Raag.  They will go to Hell.  Listen to the other answer: your Quran speaks of 14 Tabaqs.  The one who wrote the Quran only knew of 14 Tabaqs.  The ones who know of Lakhs of Pataals, they don’t lie.  They have seen them.  The truth is that there are a lot more than Lakhs.  There is no end to how many there are.  They can’t be counted.  The Master is infinite.”  Dastgir heard this and did not believe it.  He spoke to Guru ji: “I can’t believe what you are saying.  If you know about this, then show them to me.  Take my son with you and take him how far you can go.”  The

Sri Jaganath held the hand of Dastgir’s son and said: “close your eyes!  You will see what you wish for.”  The son of the peer closed his eyes.  As soon as he closed his eyes, he saw another space.  He spent many days exploring the different worlds there.  He saw many Akaash Gangas (galaxies) and went to many worlds.  He spent many days touring the different worlds.  Guru ji showed him many other dimensions.  According to the Peer’s son’s reality, many years passed like this.  He saw Lakhs of galaxies.  Guru ji then showed him one Pataal.  They spent many days there and then went to another.  When they reached the third Pataal, they toured that.  They saw Lakhs of Pataals.  Satguru ji spent many years with the son of the Peer there, as per the boy’s reality.  The boy was tired touring for so many years.  He folded his hands and spoke with humility: “there is no end to these galaxies and universes.  I have been separated from my family for many years.  Let’s go back home now.  I know that you are Khuddah himself and no one else.”  Satguru ji heard this and said: “if you have any other wish to see anything else, there is more to see.  There is no end to this.  If you are getting anxious and wish to go home, then your father won’t believe this.  Let’s do something that gives him faith.  Let’s go to Sach Khand and see its Sangat.  They are doing Keertan there.  We will take Panchamrit from there and bring it to your father.”

Guru ji went to Sach Khand with the Peer’s son.  The saints were sitting in Sach Khand and doing Keertan.  When they saw Sri Guru ji come, they all rejoiced and got up to welcome him.  They bowed to his lotus feet and had him sit in the middle of the court on a high seat.  They lit Divas and did Guru ji’s Aarti.  They did his Pooja and sang his praises.  They put a garland of flowers from Sach Khand around his neck.  A big pot of Panchamrit came.  Ardaas was done standing up.  The Prashaad was distributed to all.  The Peer’s son got some too and was really happy.  Many had Karah Prashaad.  Guru ji showed the boy many other Sangats of saints, who worshiped Guru ji, in many universes.  A bowl filled with Karah Prashaad was given to the boy from Sach Khand.  Taking the Prashaad, they both came back to Earth, in Baghdad.  Where the Peer was sitting with his Mureeds, they came there.  The Peer saw his son and Guru ji reappear and asked his son: “did you see the Lakhs of Pataals?  Was he lying?  You came back very quickly.”  Dastgir’s son was shocked to hear this.  With great surprise, he said: “oh father, I don’t understand.  I will tell you what I know: this Darvesh is Khuddah himself.  You said we came back quickly when it felt like I spent 100 years roaming the galaxies.  I saw Lakhs of Pataals and Lakhs of Akaashes.  I couldn’t see the end of the universe.  I was tired and then I wanted to come back.  I asked him to bring me back.  I saw his Sangat everywhere we went.  They all did Keertan on different planets.  They all praised him.  They worship his feet with love.”  Dastgir was surprised to hear all this.  He was shocked with all that he was told.  He thought to himself: “they had only left for an hour.  We all stayed sitting here when they disappeared.  They say they spent many years.  He says he saw Lakhs of Pataals and Akaashes.  This seems impossible.”  The Peer saw this as amazing.  He thought for a long time in his mind.  He thought to himself further: “I am considered the greatest of all the Peers.  There is nobody more powerful than me.  There is no one bigger than me in the world.  Everyone obeys me.  The whole land bows to my feet.  My power, yet, is very small in front of this person.  I am like a grain of sand in front of the Sumer Mountain.  This is not a human being.  This is Khuddah who took on a human body.  There is no one equal to him.  I should bow to him with my hands folded.”  He thought about this and bowed to Guru ji’s feet.

There is another conversion with the Peer that Giani Sher Singh ji mentions but is not written by Kavi Santokh Singh ji.  This occurs while the Peer sits in his seat and Guru ji was brought before him to be tried.  Upon the accounts written previously, the Peer understood that Guru ji was Khuddah.  He asked Guru ji some questions.

The Peer asked Guru ji 3 questions: “1. What was before Khuddah?  2. Where does Khuddah live?  3. What does Khuddah do?”  Guru ji said: “count to 10.”  The Peer began counting: 1,2,3…  Guru ji said: “you are counting wrong.”  The Peer started again and Guru ji stopped him again.  Guru ji said: “why do you begin with 1?”  The Peer said: “there is nothing before 1.”  Guru ji said: “that’s your answer: there is nothing before Khuddah.”  For the second question, Guru ji said: “serve me milk.”  A cup of milk was brought for Guru ji.  Guru ji said: “there is something mixed in here.”  The Peer said: “the milk is pure.  It has not been tampered with, I swear it.”  Guru ji said: “there is ghee in the milk.”  The Peer agreed.  Guru ji said: “the milk has ghee but cannot be seen.  Khuddah lives everywhere but you can’t see him.”  For the last question, Guru ji was sitting on a lower area.  Peer Dastgir was sitting on a higher place.  Guru ji said: “if you are asking me things of Gyaan, I need to sit higher than you.”  The Peer came off his seat and sat down.  Guru ji sat on the seat and laughed.  He said: “Peer, this is what Khuddah does.  He makes the lower high, and the higher low.”

The Peer bowed and lost his ego.  He said to all his Mureeds: “bow to his feet and ask him to forgive you.  He is not a human being.  He is the form of Allah Khuddah.”  The people heard the Peer and realised that Guru ji was Khuddah.  They all bowed to Guru ji’s feet.  They brought many types of gifts when bowing.  The stuck arms were cured.  They all bowed to Guru ji.  They remembered what they did and asked for forgiveness.  They had faith for Guru ji.  The Turks all did Pooja of Guru ji.  Guru ji gave them all wisdom: “do the Simran of Satnam.  He is the Master of the Universe.  Don’t make the mistake of taking sides.  See the Khuddah in all.  Practice this with determination and you will achieve Mukti.”  Guru ji spent many days there.  He gave wisdom to many and gave them Mukti.  Guru ji got ready to travel on.  I bow to the Satguru.

2-35 Bhai Mardana’s End/ Achal Vatala/ Sajjan/ Shahzada

The praise of Sri Guru ji is a garden of lotuses.  Make your mind a bee and indulge in it.  Smell the fragrance day and night.  Be Mukat with it

Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..

Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, listen to the great Katha.  Bhai Mardana ji spoke to Sri Guru ji: “we have travelled a lot now.  We saw the whole world.  Let’s go home now.”  Guru ji heard this and said: “Mardana, you remember you home still?  You never forget it.  If you really want to go, I can send you without delay.  Go and meet your family.  Love your wife and children.  Stay there for a few days.”  Bhai Mardana ji said: “I just asked casually.  I don’t wish to go.  I just asked out of joy.  What will I do, going before you.  I will go only if you go.”  Guru ji said: “you will have to go before me.  You will go to your permanent home before me.  I will come after.  You will be taken out of all bondage.  You won’t come back to this world again.  You will have complete Mukti.  You will no longer feel the pain of birth and death.”  Understanding Guru ji’s words as true, Bhai Mardana ji said: “you speak the truth.”  He spoke without attachment: “where will I leave my body?  How much time do I have left?  You know everything in your heart.  Please tell me.”  Guru ji said: “it will be a beautiful place where you will leave.  You have 5 days and 2 hours left.  You will leave your body that is made of the 5 primal elements.  You will go to Sach Khand.”  Bhai Mardana ji asked: “when I leave, will you be with me or not?  I wish to know this.”  Guru ji said: “I will be with you.  I will complete your burial by your traditions and then I will go on ahead.”  After saying this, Guru ji left the place of Peer Dastgir.

We walked slowly.  After 4 days, Bhai Mardana ji had a dream.  He said to Guru ji: “I had a dream.  Some are cremated and some are buried.  The ones that are buried, they are burnt ahead anyways.  Please cremate me here.  Don’t bury me into the earth.  I don’t want my body to stay.  I dreamt of this.”  Guru ji said: “I will cremate you.  I won’t bury you.  I will do as you say.  You won’t think about this later, will you?  You won’t regret your decision, will you?  I will do as you say.  Let’s go to the City of Khurma.  You are to eat your last meal there still, as per your remaining Karma.  Where you will leave your body, your children will live there.”  We all went to Khurma.  The city was beautiful.  Guru ji went to the market and said: “you still have a meal left here.  I will feed you.  Eat your last your meal.”  Bhai Mardana ji obeyed and ate the food.  It was almost noon.  We came out of the city and saw a nice place to sit.

Guru ji said: “what do you say?  Are you ready?”  Bhai Mardana ji said: “I am ready.”  He folded his hands and placed his head at Guru ji’s feet.  His attachment was gone.  His mind was still.”  Guru ji said: “you are leaving?  What do you feel?”  Bhai Mardana ji said: “by staying with you, I can see everything.  You gave me this achievement.  I can feel everything.  The knot of air in my navel, had just opened now.  I have 9 breaths left.  You can count them.  I am not lying.”

Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, listen, Guru ji said to me: “Bala count.”  I started counting.  I counted 9 breaths and then I touched Bhai Mardana ji’s body.  I didn’t feel a tenth breath.  I said to Guru ji: “he has left and immersed into you.  He achieved the highest status.  Not even Devatas or Jogis could achieve the high status that he achieved.  This is all by your compassion.  Whoever is blessed by you, only they leave like this.  He left his body like an elephant breaking a flower garland around its neck.  He had no pain.”  Sri Guru ji said: “listen Bala, let’s cremate him.”  Guru ji had a Chadra with him.  He put it on top of Bhai Mardana ji’s body.  I had a Chadra too which I laid on top of Bhai Mardana ji as well.  We collected firewood and made a pyre.  Guru ji set the pyre on fire.  The body burnt to ash.  Guru ji stayed one night there.  Doing the Darshan of Prabhoo ji makes all the pain go away.

As we got ready to leave, we saw Gorakh Nath ji coming.  He had some Sidhs with him.  They said: “Adesh Adesh.”  Guru ji said: “Ikankaar Adesh hai.”  The Sidhs sat down to speak with Guru ji.  They said: “how can the bad wisdom be destroyed?  How can we be saved from the world?  How can we swim across it?  How can you die while being alive?  How can you recognize the truth?  How can we know the path to Parmeshwar?  How can the Indrees be in your control?  How can the mind be in your control and be still?  How can you know the real form?  How big is it?  What deeds should one do?  Where does the person come from and where do they go?  What do they immerse in?”  Guru ji heard this and gave the answers quickly: “by taking the Gurmat (the wisdom and teachings of the Guru), the bad wisdom will be destroyed.  The world can be crossed by connecting to the Naam, the mind drenching in Naam.  The ones who keep the Shabad of the Guru in their hearts, they are dead while being alive.  They don’t die again.  The Gurmukh (one who follows the Guru’s teachings) recognizes the truth (that the body is not the real self.  The Aatma is infinite).  The Gurmukh finds the path to Parmeshwar and knows it.  Killing the mind, the Indrees come under control, spontaneously.  The mind follows then.  The form of Parmeshwar cannot be described.  His beauty can’t be described.  Chanting his name, day and night, there is no other better deed.  One comes be the Human and goes by the same command.  The Jeev stays by Hukam.”  Gorakh Nath ji then said: “let’s go to the Mela of Shivratri at Achal.”  Guru ji asked: “how far is it?  When will the Mela be done?”  Gorakh ji said: “it’s 600 Kos from here.  It’s a harsh way there.  It will start tomorrow.”  Guru ji said: “Gorakh, listen, you are powerful.  You can fly like a bird.  I will come slowly.  You can fly tomorrow.  We can’t be together.  The powerful and the powerless can never meet.” Gorakh ji said: “when you came to Sumer, you made my sandals fly.  You showed your powers to everyone.  Where did your powers go now?  How did your powers get destroyed?  Did you lose your powers in a debate?”  Guru ji said: “I didn’t make your sandal fly.  Sri Parmeshwar did it.  A human can’t have any powers.  Only the Niranjan is powerful.  If he makes me fly, I will go.  You can go now.  I will come right behind you.”

The Sidhs all flew away to the Mela at Achal.  They went with their will.  After a while, the Master of the World arrived in Achal Vatala.  He reached before the Sidhs.  He saw a high place and sat there.  He was really radiant.  The Sidhs arrived after Guru ji.  They all saw Guru ji and were surprised.  They said: “Adesh, Adesh.”  They said: “you are quite the magician!  You tricked us!  You started after us and came before us.”  Guru ji said: “my magician is the Ikankaar.  The Guru’s Shabad gives me power.  Shamboo Nath is always stuck in bad wisdom.  He follows something else besides Kartaar’s way.”  The Sidhs set up their Asanas and made people worship them.  Many people came to bow to Guru ji.  The Sidhs saw this and became jealous.  When the Mela was finished, the Sidhs went to their own Dheras.  This Katha will come again in detail in the 39th Adhyaaya.

Guru ji said to me: “let’s go.  We will go and get Mardana’s son.  Let’s go to Talwandi and bring him to Khurma.  We will give him a Siropa and seat him on his father’s throne.  This is a debt on my head to settle his family.”  We quickly left the place and reached Talwandi.  We stayed at the well of my father.  Guru ji said: “think of my mother, father and Rai Bhullaar ji.  They have all left to Parlok (the life hereafter).  Chacha Lalu ji is alive still.  When he sees me, he will love me a lot and won’t let me go.  He will hug me and cry.  He will stop me from going.  At night, go into the city quietly.  I won’t go into the city.  Bring the son of Mardana, Shazada.  I will stay here and leave from here.”  I obeyed and went into the city at night.  I saw nobody.  I came to Bhai Mardana ji’s door and called out to his son.  Bhai Shahzada ji came out and was happy to see me.  He thought his father had come when he saw me.  He grabbed my feet with love.  I blessed him and said: “Sri Guru ji is sitting outside the city.  He is calling you.  He sent me to get you.”  Bhai Shahzada ji said: “where did you leave my father?  Why did he not come home?  Why is Prabhoo ji sitting outside the city, leaving Talwandi?”  I said: “come to Guru ji, don’t waste time.  He will give you all your answers.”  Bhai Shahzada ji was fortunate.  He came with me without delay.  He came and did Guru ji’s Darshan.  He placed his head on Guru ji’s feet.  Sri Guru ji said to him: “your father’s age has completed.  He has left his body.  Where the great city of Khurumapur is, I have come to take you there.  That’s why I called for you.  I have to give you a Siropa.  Your father had it.  How will you want to take it?”  Bhai Shahzada ji thought about this and said: “whatever you gave to my father, please be compassionate and give me that as well.”  Guru ji said: “your father asked for Keertan and to stay with me.  I cremated his body.  He wanted me to do this.  You should come and live there now.  You will be like Mardana.  You will be radiant there.  Live there.  Make your homes there forever.  You can do as you please.  This is what I would like you to do.”  Bhai Shahzada ji folded his hands and said: “I am under your command.  Just as my father was your servant, see me as the same, oh Giver of Joy.”  Prabhoo ji then took Bhai Shazada ji and went to Tulamba village first (present day Makhdoompur, Pakistan).

In Tulamba a person named “Sajjan” lived there.  He dressed like a Vaishnav saint but had no compassion, not even a little bit.  He wore very expensive clothes.  Sri Prabhoo ji came near the city and sat down.  Bhai Shazada ji came with Guru ji.  He was hungry and so he took permission to go into the city.  He saw a Dharamsala, which was the place of Sajjan.  There was a Mosque and a Mandir there.  Bhai Shazada ji was impressed.  He went to Sajjan and sat down near him.  Sajjan spoke with respect: “come brother!  Where do you live?  What is your Varan?  Where did you come from and where are you going?”  Bhai Shazada ji said: “I am a Miraashi.  My home is far from here.  I am going on ahead for a special task.  I came to your place because I am hungry.”  Sajjan spoke very cunningly: “there is a lot of food here.  Who is your master?  How big is he, seeing how he has such a good Miraashi?  Is he greater than me or lesser than me?”  Bhai Shazada ji said: “my Prabhoo is bigger than you and I.  He can fulfill any task you wish for.  He is a Kshatriya named Sri Guru Nanak ji, the Great.”  Looking towards his people with a deceitful eye, Sajjan said to them: “he is the Miraashi of a great Prabhoo.  Serve him well by which he becomes happy.”  One person came to call him and spoke sarcastically: “come Miraashi, the food is ready.”  They took Bhai Shazada ji to another room.  There were 3 other men there.  They were strong people.  They grabbed Bhai Shazada ji and tied him up.  The expensive clothes that he was wearing, they were taken off of him.  They beat him and scolded him: “whatever other items you have, tell us right now where they are.  Otherwise we will kill you here.”  When Bhai Shazada ji was in pain from the beating, he thought of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji: “this is great Tappa ji that you sent me here!  I am in pain.  They are beating me up.  I saw him as a Vaishnav and got fooled.  I didn’t know he was a great sinner.”  Guru ji sensed what was happening to Bhai Shazada ji and quickly came.

Guru ji sat down where Sajjan was sitting as a Vaishnav.  Sajjan wore 12 Tilaks on his body.  The King of the Bedis said: “Sri Kartaar!  Kartaar!  Sajjan!  My Miraashi came here after leaving me.  He didn’t come back to me.  Who knows what happened to him.”  Sajjan said: “nobody came here.  If someone came here, he would have been here.”  Guru ji said: “he definitely came to your home.  Don’t lie!  He is here!”  Sajjan heard this and said: “you seem like a great saint.  I wouldn’t lie to you.  If you don’t trust me than you can look around yourself.”  Guru ji said to me: “Bala, go inside and make this Vaishnav’s face black.  Bring Shazada from inside and make his face black.”  I heard this and quickly went.  I saw Bhai Shazada ji tied up inside.  I went to free him.  I picked him up.  Bhai Shazada ji said to me: “this is a nice place the Master sent me!  They took my clothes off and tied me up!  Tell them to give my clothes back!  They are sinners who gave me pain.”  The Thugs said: “he wasn’t wearing any clothes when he came.”  I heard this and took Bhai Shazada ji without any clothes to Guru ji.  Guru ji asked: “why are you naked?  Who took your clothes?”  Bhai Shazada ji heard this and said: “listen, oh Destroyer of Pain, this person who pretends to be a saint, there is no bigger sinner thug than him.  He took me inside, telling me there’s food inside.  They tied me up and beat me.  They took my clothes off and hit me.  He is filled with sin.”  As Bhai Shazada ji spoke, Sajjan was humiliated.  He lowered his head and couldn’t say anything.  He wanted to hide.  He was embarrassed seeing his reality.  Guru ji uttered a Shabad:

Soohi Mahalla 1 Ghar 6

Ik Oankaar Satgur Prasaad..

Bronze is bright and shiny, but when it is rubbed, its blackness comes out.  Washing it, its impurity is not removed, even if it is washed a hundred times. ||1||

They alone are my Sajjans (friends), who travel along with me when leaving this place.  Where the accounts are called for, they appear standing with me there (the good Karma). ||1||Rahao||

There are houses, mansions and tall buildings, painted on all sides; they became ruins and empty within, they became useless ruins. ||2||

The herons (thugs) have white clothes (feathers) and live near Teeraths.  They tear apart and eat the living beings, and so they are not called white (swans/saints). ||3||

The Simmal tree; seeing its fruits, one is forgotten.  They are fooled seeing the big tree and fruit because Its fruits are useless – just like the qualities of the body. ||4||

Just as a blind man (without good deeds) carrying such a heavy load, journeys through the mountains.  He wishes for eyes as he cannot find the Way (to Sach Khand).  How can he climb and cross over the mountain? ||5||

What good does it do to serve, be good, and be clever?  Nanak, contemplate the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and you shall be released from bondage. ||6||1||3||

(SGGS 729)

“You have a corrupt mind!  You are the home of sins.  You pretend to be a Vaishnav.  You are pure from the outside like Amrit but filled with poison inside.  The Jumms will punish you severely when they put a chain around your neck.  You will be beaten.  Who will help you then?  You collected money in one place with corruption.  It won’t help you when you yell in pain.  Your sons, wife and relatives; none of them will be able to help you.  You will suffer pain for a very long time.  Your sins will make you suffer.”  Sajjan did Guru ji’s Darshan.  He was afraid to hear the scary words.  He became humble and grabbed Guru ji’s feet.  He folded his hands and said: “I have done a lot of sins.  Now, keep me in your sanctuary.  It is the Dharma of the saints to be generous.  Meeting you, I am aware of my actions.”  Guru ji said: “if you stop committing sins, the Kartaar will be compassionate over you.  Do the Simran of Satnam with love and focus.  You will be blessed and be in joy.”  Sajjan said: “I won’t ever do this again.  Forgive my mistakes of the past.  Give me wisdom and make me your Sikh.  Give me the Naam to chant.  You came here because of some good karma of mines.”  He bowed to Guru ji’s feet, over and over again.  Guru ji spoke with compassion: “this Miraashi is your Guru now.  If you follow him, you will be blessed.  Stop doing all the sins.”  Sajjan bowed to Bhai Shazada ji.  Sajjan became blessed.  Guru ji said: “the money you have in your home, collected from sins, give it all away.”  Sajjan obeyed and gave all his money away to the poor.  He called them and gave them money.  Guru ji blessed Sajjan in this way.  Guru ji then travelled on.

We all arrived in Khurumapur.  Guru ji said to Bhai Shazada ji: “this city is great.  I cremated Mardana here.”  Bhai Shazada ji heard this and saw where his father was cremated.  He bowed his head to the place.  Guru ji said: “listen to my words: bring your family and live here.  If you live here, you will be like your father.  This whole city will worship you.”  Bhai Shazada ji folded his hands and spoke to the Master of the World: “who will be our support?  You are going to go to a foreign land.”  Sri Guru ji said: “in your home, you will have everything to give you joy.  Your family will be really big.  See my words as true.  When you think of me in your mind, I will come to you without delay.  Trust my words.  Don’t let your mind wander.”  Bhai Shazada ji folded his hands and said: “I trust you, oh Master of the World.”  Guru ji gave Bhai Shazada ji a Manji.  Guru ji then wished to leave the city.  Bhai Shazada ji headed back home to bring his family to the new place.  Since then, they have lived in the new city.  His family grew in big numbers.

By the reference given in this chapter of being 600 Kos from Achal Vatala, by this calculation, this place seems to be the place of Kurram, Pakistan in today’s time.
