Uttaraardh 2.26 – 2.30

2-26 Blessing the Saints/ Coming to Ahmnabad

The ones who are focussed on the Naam, they made their egos run away.  I bow to their feet and say the Katha.

Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..

Listen Sri Guru Angad Dev ji to the Katha, which is beautiful.  On the path that Guru ji was travelling on, some saints met Guru ji.  They all bowed to Guru ji’s feet.  They sat down and said: “we have heard of your praises, everywhere.  Your glory has spread far and wide.  We wanted to meet you for a long time now.  We met you all of a sudden.  We wish to ask you questions about the Katha of the Prabhoo.  Oh master, if you give us permission, we would like to present our questions to you.”  Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “I am a sacrifice unto your questions.  From which the beautiful love arises, the discussion of Hari is advantageous for the Bhagats.  The time is successful for who speak or listen about the Gyaan Katha.”  The saints spoke: “how is the form of Kartaar?  What is his form, colour, glory and symbol?  Please tell us.  Tell us everything about Parmatma, whom the Devatas and humans are always seeking.  How was he created?  Or did he make himself?  You know everything.  You know the beginning and end.”  Guru ji heard this and said: “oh saints, his end is not known by anyone.  He is without end.  There is nothing else known.  12 months make a year.  That is one day for the Devatas.  2,000 Yugas of the Devatas is 1 day from Brahma.  100 years of such is the age of Brahma.  1 age of Brahma is one day and night for Vishnu.  100 years for Vishnu, that is his age.  Vishnu’s age is 1 day for Shiv ji.  Shiv ji’s 100 years is his age.  So many Yugas are just one blink for Maya.  Maya has no end.  If Maya has no end; you can’t know about it, how would you know anything about Maya’s Master?”  Guru ji spoke about this and uttered a Shabad in Raag Goojri:

Goojri Mahalla 1..

From the lotus of Vishnu’s navel, Brahma was born; He chanted the Vedas with a melodious voice.

He could not find the Lord’s limits, and he remained in the darkness of coming and going. ||1||

Why should I forget my Beloved?  He is the support of my Pranas.

The perfect beings perform his Bhagti.  The Munnis serve Him through the Guru’s Teachings. ||1||Rahao||

(SGGS 489)

“From the navel of Narayan came a lotus flower.  From the lotus, Brahma was born.  He had four faces.  He began to look for the Kartaar, the creator.  He could not find the end nor recognize the Parmeshwar.  He looked and he looked but got tired and lost.  What is a human if Brahma himself lost?”  The saints said: “tell us everything, how he tried to find the creator.  There is nothing hidden from you.  You know everything like a Ber on your palm.”  Sri Guru ji said: “listen oh saints, I will tell you what happened before creation.  When Brahma appeared on the lotus, he praised the Prabhoo.  He wanted to know the Gyaan.  Love of this wish came into his heart.  He wanted to know who the Karta Purakh was.  He wanted to see him.  He praised Prabhoo a lot to make him happy.  He spoke with love.  He sang in sweet pitches.  His joy increased as he sang.  He praised the Prabhoo with more depth.  As he thought of what he was singing, the joy increased.  He was drenched with love.  His throat swelled with emotion.  He sang and experienced bliss.  He sang 4 Vedas in this way, which are known in the world.  The wise Rishis heard the Vedas and composed many Simritees and Shastras.  After composing the 4 Vedas, Brahma thought to himself: “how was I created?  Who created me?”  He looked all around in 4 directions and saw water everywhere.  He thought to himself: “it’s just me and the water.  I don’t see a third thing.”  He became egotistical and denied the existence of another.  He thought to himself: “whom was I praising?  It was just me.  I am the doer and the creator.  There is no other creator besides me.  If there is another, I would have seen him by now.  I don’t see anyone else, therefore there isn’t anyone else.”  Ego came into his heart in this way.  He thought it was just him.  At that time, a sweet voice came from the sky: “Brahma, why are you egotistical?  I am the creator.  Recognize who is your creator.  Find him first.”  Brahma heard this and said: “I looked very hard.  There’s only me and the water.  I don’t see anything else.  If there is a third somewhere else, show him to me.”  The Akaash Bani said: “on the Lotus you sit on with bliss, look there first.  If you can find its end, then you have a right to be egotistical.”  Seeing the lotus, Brahma spoke: “this is small in front of me.  My body is bigger.  It is surprising to know that the lotus created me.  How can a small thing create a bigger thing?”  The Akaal said: “when you look harder, you will know who is big and who is small.”  Brahma heard this and was shocked.  He got worried and looked at the lotus.  He said in anger: “I am bigger.  The lotus is so much smaller.  How can it create me?”  He thought of this and wanted to kick the lotus: “if the lotus doesn’t break by my kick, then I will know that it is my source.  If it breaks, then I will know that the voice I heard was just my imagination.”  Brahma kicked the lotus but it didn’t even move.  He kicked it again.  As he kicked it the second time, he fell into the stem of the lotus.  He went deeper into the stem and didn’t stop falling.  It was like throwing a stone into a deep well.  He kept falling and couldn’t find its end.  He fell for a very long time.  He spent 18 Yugas falling and 18 Yugas coming out.  He couldn’t find a place to stand.  Sometimes his head was upright, sometimes he was upside down.  He fell continuously.  He was anxious and couldn’t find a way out.  He had said that: he was the beginning, middle and end.  He spoke in ego before but now his ego was shattered.  He became embarrassed since he fell into the lotus.  He was tired and in pain.  He cried and sang the praise of the Prabhoo for many years: “I bow to you oh indestructible Master.  You have no form or destiny, oh Omniscient One.  You are the Parbrahm Parmeshwer, oh Karta Purakh.  You destroy the ego and the pain.”  When Sri Akaal Purakh saw Brahma in a humble form, Sri Akaal Purakh became compassionate and quickly took Brahma out of the stem of the lotus.  Brahma came out of the darkness and sat on the lotus with joy.  He praised Prabhoo even more.  He bowed with his hands folded, over and over again: “you are infinite; not reachable by the senses, unknowable, endless, pure, undividable; oh Sri Bhagwant.  You are Sat, without form, beautiful, unquantifiable, forever, amazing, untouchable, without form, without Karma, without doubt, unified, indestructible, without fear, without beginning, self-illuminating.  You have no destiny, colour, attachment or Maya.  You cannot be won.  You are never born.  You are never old nor are you born from a woman.  You are far from everyone yet close to everyone.  You are unaffected by anything while residing in everything.  You are Nayt, Nayt (not this, not this), everyday, away from any comprehension.”  Brahma said 1,000 names and then the Akaash Vani spoke, just like clouds rumbling in a sweet voice: “do the Tapp, do the Tapp, do the Tapp.”  It was said 3 times to do Tapp with his mind, body and words.  “You will become powerful with the Tapp.  You will have the power to create the world then.  Create a great universe.”  Brahma sat and did Tapasya for a very long time.  He received the powers to create the universe after 10,000 years.”  Sri Guru ji said: “listen oh saints, in this way, Kamla Kant gave wisdom to Brahma.  The end of the lotus could be found.  Brahma was amazed with this.  We are humans of Kaliyuga.  What can we know?  The Parmeshwar is unquantifiable.  I am in love with the Parmeshwar.  He resides in my heart.  I serve him like Shiva, Sanak and his brothers.  Brahma and others call him “Nayt, Nayt.”  He is the support of my Pranas.  He lives in my heart.  I don’t forget him at any time.”  The saints heard this and were really happy.  They said: “you are Dhan, Dhan, Dhan.  Your words give the gift of Mukti.  We have one more doubt: what is in the eyes that sees?  This whole world, who is it that sees everything?  Tell us how he sees.  There is no one wiser than you.”  Guru ji spoke the second Padda of the Shabad

Sri Mukhvaak..

The sun and moon are his lamps; the One Light of the Murari fills the three worlds.

One who becomes a Gurmukh remains immaculately pure, day and night, while the self-willed Manmukh is enveloped by the darkness of night. ||2||

(SGGS 489)

Listen saints, the light in the sun and moon belongs to the Ishwar.  It illuminates the world.  The Parmeshwar gave the light to all.  The same light is in every heart.  That is the one who sees in all.  Every heart has the light of the Prabhoo, which allows you to see.  Only the Gurmukh knows this.  The Parmeshwar is “Ram,” manifesting in everything.  The Manmukh will never understand this.  If one does not chant the Satnam, they are always in the darkness of attachment.  They will never know the path of the Prabhoo.”  The saints spoke: “the ones who are blind by their eyes, they can’t see the sun or the moon.  The ones who have eyes can see it all.  Where is the light of the blind?”  Guru ji heard this and spoke:

Sri Mukhvaak..

The Siddhas in Samadhi are in conflict, everyday; what can they see with their two eyes?

The light illuminates inside by the Shabad.  The Satguru settles this conflict. ||3||

(SGGS 489)

This conflict has always been as such.  The Sidhs and Sadhoos have fought over this.  They say that the eyes are flesh and water.  Everyone knows this.  Who is the one in the eyes that sees?  They have always argued like this.  The Munnis also don’t know this.  The Sidhs, Sadhoos and Tapasvis don’t know without the Satguru.  The one can see the true self, the light within the heart, they know everything.  The seer is the supreme witness.  To earn the Shabad of the Satguru, hearing the sound in the Dasam Duar; the Satguru resolves the conflict.  Nobody else knows this nor is there any other way to know.  The actions of all the Indriyas, they are obedient of the ultimate light.  Look for that inside of your body.  It is the Chetna of the Brahm (there is only one Chetna or consciousness in all.  To think otherwise is the doubt; is the ego of the limited body).  You will understand your self then.”  The saints were happy to hear this.  They asked another question: “the Prabhoo is the Ikankaar.  How can we meet him, by which we can be free?  By which technique can he be achieved?  Tell us this.”  Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji completed the beautiful and radiant Shabad:

Sri Mukhvaak..

The Master of the Suras (Devatas) and humans is infinite and unborn; his infinite Mansion is unlimited.

Nanak, he is achieved by Sahij; shower Your mercy upon me, and save me. ||4||2||

(SGGS 489)

The unlimited master of Devatas and humans, his form is infinite.  He can be met with Sahij (Gyaan) and love.  When he blesses you, you can achieve Mukti.”  The saints heard this and their doubts were destroyed.  They were calm and in peace.  They folded their hands and bowed to Guru ji’s feet, over and over again.  They said: “you are the Avatar of the Parmeshwar.  You came to save the people and took on a human form.  We don’t see any other place besides you.  Give us Mukti by giving us your Naam.  We have wandered in this world in doubt for a very long time.  We are determined to make you our Guru.  Please keep the honour of the ones who come to your sanctuary.  We are always under your command.”  Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji said: “keep the faith all the time.  Do the Simran of Vahiguru all the time.  You will easily achieve the Mukti.”  In this way, Guru ji gave the wisdom to the saints.  Guru ji then travelled on.  The saints wanted to travel with Guru ji.  They came along with Satguru ji.

The Gunkhaani travelled and spoke to me: “Laalo is a beloved friend of mine.  Let’s go and meet him.  It has been a very long time since we last saw him.  He lives in Ahmnabad.  Let’s go there.”  Guru ji said this and travelled.  All of us Fakirs travelled with him along with the saints.  Guru ji walked slowly.  We walked and laughed along the way.  The Deena Nath came to where Ahmnabad was.  He saw a high place and sat outside of the village.  There were saints and Fakirs all around Guru ji.  Guru ji sat in the centre.  He made a seat of stones.  He sat on top of the stones.  The place is called “Rori Sahib,” till today.  Visiting that place, fulfills the wishes.

2-27 Ahmnabad/ Babar’s Attack

If you were to get off of the mountain of ego and take shelter in the home made of the dirt of everyone’s feet, you would be protected from the heat and cold of your vices.  You would be in joy then.

Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..

Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, listen to the history.  The Giver of Joy sat outside of the village.  The Raja of the area was a Pathaan.  Many instruments were being played in many houses at that time.  There were many weddings happening that day.  There was a lot of joy being celebrated.  The people were singing and dancing and merry-making.  There were many celebrations happening.  They wore jewellery and new clothes, looking dashing.  They wore their Pathaani Pugris and held their weapons.  They enjoyed the celebrations and laughed.  Horses were made to dance on the street.  The people sat with their moustaches twisted upwards.  They had forgotten Sri Kartaar and were engrossed in the pleasures of the vices.  They did not know of how to serve saints and visitors.  They would look at Fakirs and laugh at them.  They were blinded by the intoxication of their glory.  They were trapped in the potholes of the worldly bonds.  They were not compassionate towards the people in pain.  They were really foolish and looked at other women.  They were drunk with alcohol.  They would beat up the poor.  Wherever they would see pretty women, they would circle them on their horses.

The Master of the Universe stayed outside of the city.  Nobody came to do his Seva.  The Fakirs and saints that were with Guru ji, they were hungry.  Their faces were drooping.  When the whole day passed, the night came.  Prabhoo ji spoke: “oh saints, two of you should get up and go into the village.  Go and ask for food and eat it.  If someone doesn’t give you food while sitting, go and ask for food from the homes.  Mardana, go with them and call Lallo on the way.”  Everyone heard Guru ji’s command.

Bhai Mardana ji went with 2 of the saints into the city where the big houses of the Pathaans were.  They went to get food.  They would ask for food but the people would not respond to them.  The people were drunk and spoke harshly.  The saints and Bhai Mardana ji asked around and were pushed around.  They reached a home of a Pathaan and asked for food.  Nobody gave any food to them nor did anyone say anything.  A drunk person came and pushed Bhai Mardana ji.  Bhai Mardana ji fell to the ground.  He was hurt.  His knees were scrapped.  His teeth bled.  He was in pain.  They all went back to Guru ji.  They called Bhai Lallo ji on the way back and told him that Guru ji had arrived.  Bhai Lallo ji joined them and came to Guru ji.  Bhai Lallo ji brought some roasted grains and offered them to Guru ji while bowing.  He bowed and said: “you came after a very long time.  You were compassionate to give me your Darshan.”  Guru ji asked him how he was and had him sit near him.  Guru ji then asked the 2 saints: “you came back empty-handed.  What happened?”  The Fakirs heard this and showed Guru ji Bhai Mardana ji’s wounds.  They said: “there are Paamar people in this village.  They are sinners.  They do not respect the saints of Hari, forget about serving them.  They are Bemukhs and atheists.  They give pain.”  Guru ji heard of the disrespect towards the saints and Bhai Mardana ji.  He got angry.  Bhai Lallo ji was sitting in front of Guru ji.  Guru ji looked towards Bhai Lallo ji and said: “these Pathaans are walking the wrong way.  They will die a painful death.”  Guru ji was going to speak a Shabad that was going to uproot the Pathaans in the country:

Tilang Mahalla 1..

As the Bani of the Master comes to me, understand this Gyaan, O Lallo.  Bringing the marriage party of sin, Babar has departed from Kabul.  He will bully everyone out for wedding gifts (or women), O Lallo.

Modesty and Dharma both have hidden, and falsehood struts around like a leader, O Lallo.  The Qazis and the Brahmins have lost their words, and Satan now reads the Agadh (Niqaah), O Lallo.

The Muslim women read the Koran, and in their misery, they call upon Khuddah, O Lalo.  The Hindu women of high class, and others, they will be dealt with as well, O Lallo.

The Sohailas (songs) of blood will be sung, O Nanak, and blood is sprinkled instead of saffron, O Lallo. ||1||

(SGGS 722)

Listen to the meanings of this Shabad oh listeners.  Guru ji said to Bhai Lallo ji: “don’t take it on to your heart that I cursed the people.  What I am saying is the command of the Master.  Whatever Vahiguru’s will his, that is what I say to you.  The sins of these people here has taken form as the body of Babar in Kabul.  He will come as their punisher.  He will come to give pain, which is the punishment of the sins.  Without giving the punishment, the Pathaans will not be destroyed.  The Mughals will take on a form as the sins of the people.  They will ask for gifts, forcefully.  They will take their women.  Modesty and Dharma in Kaliyuga is destroyed.  The Ministers are liars.  The Qazis and Brahmins; nobody will listen to them.  The Niqaah will be done by Satan or Kamadeva.  They will get tempted by looking at pretty women.  The Mughals will kidnap them and do as they please.  The Muslim women will read the Koran.  They say that they see Khuddah in all.  They will give pain to the poor.  Pain will be their punishment when they are beaten by Babar.  They will say: “oh Khuddah, what are you doing?”  The low and high caste Hindu women will be called by the Mughals.  Songs of blood will be sung here.  The saffron will be of blood.”  Bhai Lallo ji was sitting in front of Guru ji.  He heard this and asked: “the Mughals will come and fight.  Tell me of the state of the Pathaans, oh Master.  How long will they rule?  When will they leave this land?  The Khans are blind and intoxicated in their ego.  They disrespected Bhai Mardana ji and will be punished for it.”  Hearing Bhai Lallo ji’s word, Guru ji spoke harsh words which destroyed the rule of the Pathaans:

Sri Mukhvaak..

Nanak sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord and Master; in the city of the flesh, I speak of this account.  The One who created the universe in many colours (joys), he sits, detached, and watches this.

The Lord and Master is True, and True is His justice.  He will issue his true Command according to His judgement.  The body-fabric will be torn apart into shreds, Hindustan will remember these words.

When seventy-eight (1578 Vikram = 1521 A.D.) comes they will come, they will depart in ninety-seven (1797 Vikram = 1740 A.D.), and then another disciple of man will rise up.  Nanak speaks the Word of Truth during the time of Truth. ||2||3||5||

(SGGS 722-723)

Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is the Complete Purakh who sings the glories of the Master.  “The Aatmas of the Pathaans will leave their bodies.  This place will be a city of flesh.  This will be shown.  The One who created the world and showed many colours and illuminations, these Pathaans are opposite of him.  They are stuck in desires and have forgotten the Master.  The Master is detached from them and watching everything.  The True Master’s justice is true as well.  He casts his justice according to the Dharma.  The cloth of the body will be torn to shreds.  As the sins were done, that is who they will suffer the pain.  Blood will flow on the land.  “He” will come and take the kingdom of Hindustan.  When it will be 1578 (Vikram) when he will come.  In 1797 (Vikram), their courts of rule will end.  They will rule for 219 years.  They will then lose the kingdom.  A human Avatar of mine will come, whose disciple will be the Khalsa.  After the Ten Paatshaahs, it will be the Khalsa.  They will slowly take everything from the Mughals.  The Turks will lose their strength.  The ones who will be friendly with the Khalsa, they will be saved.  The kingdom will grow, taking the rule from the sinners.  If they fight with each other, they will be in pain; under the influence of anger.  Nanak says the words of the Truth.  When it happens, people will believe it.  The Khans will all be destroyed.  Rifles, Kataars and Kirpans will be used.  The cities will be looted.  Nothing will be left whole.”  Guru ji spoke of the future.

A wise Brahmin heard Guru ji say this.  He noticed that Guru ji was a complete saint.  He heard the dark premonition in the Shabad.  He was overcome with fear in his heart.  He ran to his home and had his wife make food.  He brought Pakvaans and humbly placed them in front of Guru ji.  He folded his hands and said: “please give this food to the saints.  Be satiated and destroy your hunger.  The harsh Shabad that you just stated in anger; that our city of Khans will be looted; please reverse your curse.  You are a great being.  Bless us.  I come to your sanctuary.  Please protect us.”  Sri Guru ji said: “listen oh Brahmin, the words of saints are like the tusks of the elephant.  Once they are outside, they never go back into the mouth again.  The Khans will be destroyed.  They will not survive in this land.  You came to my shelter with humility so you will be saved.  Oh Brahmin, meet Lallo and take the good people out of here.  Do what I say.  Take your families.  Collect your belongings and travel 4 Kos away from here.  There will be a dry pond there.  Sit there with your families.  Don’t delay.  Leave this place now.  The Mughal Army will be here in the morning.  They will come and loot the homes.  They will kill of the Pathaans.  They will tie the Pathaan women and take them.”  Bhai Lallo ji and the Brahmin heard this.  They knew the predictions were real.  They had faith on Guru ji in their hearts.  They quickly went to their homes.  They gathered their belongings and loaded their stuff.  They gathered their brothers, children and women and left the village.  The people all arrived where Guru Nanak Dev ji told them to go.

Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, listen on.  I will tell you as we saw it.  Babar was 50 Kos away.  He had a huge army (of about 2.5 million).  The Turks had a lot of strong horses.  They travelled long distances.  Guru ji turned Babar’s mind and made him come to Ahmnabad.  Babar decided to attack all of a sudden: “they did not fall into my command.  I need to punish the Pathaans.”  Babar hated the Pathaans and wanted to destroy them.  Babar commanded his army: “saddle your horses and get ready.”  The Mughals got ready.  They prepared their rifles and mounted their horses.  They travelled very fast.  They crossed about 5 rivers on the way.  The rivers had become dry by Guru ji’s will.  They gave the Mughals way.  The horses ran fast.  They Mughals reached Ahmnabad really fast.  It was a long way but they reached quickly.  Guru ji made them come quickly in 3 hours and 45 mins.  Babar came and surrounded the city.  He attacked in the morning.  The rifles fired like Holi water squirters.  The Sangs flew.  The shields were like Duffs (tambourines).  The blood flowed.  The fat leaked from the bodies.  The clothes were red from the blood, like someone throw Gulaal on them.  The swords shined like sparklers.  The people yelled: “kill them.”  The Holi of blood was started.  The warriors fought with bravery.  Metal clashed.  The Pathaans came out of their forts to fight.  They jumped walls to fight with swords.  They cut each other.  Arrows and bullets flew.  Sri Prabhoo ji’s word became reality.  The Pathaans’ weapons deceived them.  They fought for a long time.  Babar spoke in anger: “oh Mughals, you take money from me and enjoy many pleasures; when I need you, you are resting.  You are afraid to lose your lives.  These Pathaans have been blocking our way for a while now.  Kill them and take your victory!  Why don’t you kill them?”  The Dhols and Nagaras were played.  Many Nagaras were played.  Babar came into the battlefield himself.  This motivated the army to fight harder.  The Mughals charged fiercely once.  A fierce battle ensued.  The rifles fired.  Many Pathaans were pierced by spears and cut by swords.  Their heads rolled.  Their arms and shoulders were cut.  The dead bodies piled on the ground.  The Mughals attacked hard like hawks on sparrows.  They did not leave any place.  They killed everyone.  The cowards ran away, leaving the honours of their families behind.  The army of the Mughals was like the black clouds.  The swords were like lightening flashing.  The Nagaras sounded like thunder.  The bullets were like hail, ruining the fields.  The city of Pathaans was destroyed.  The swords were swung.  The city was looted.  The money was taken as well as the horses, weapons and treasures.  The Mughals went into the homes of the Pathaans and took their pretty women who wore beautiful jewellery and clothes.  They killed all of the Pathaans and looted the city.  Many were prisoned.  People yelled in pain.  The Shabad that Sri Guru ji uttered; it destroyed the Khans.  The Peers and Fakirs that denied Guru ji’s words and told the Pathaans that they will blind Babar by their magic, all sat there quietly in fear.  Who would have such a power that can stand in front of the words of Sri Guru ji?  If tens of millions of fireflies would get together, they would still not be able to compare themselves to the sun.  The Mughals won the city and looted it a lot.  They set up their Dhera 2 Kos away.  Babar was happy to win the battle.  His fear spread in every direction.

2-28 Guru ji had the Prisoners Released by Babar

The various things you see in this word because of Agyaan; are destroyed once the Gyaan comes.  If you want this Gyaan then meditate on the Satguru.

Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..

Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, listen to the Katha ahead.  The saints saw the army and left.  Sri Guru ji remained sitting there.  I was there with Guru ji, along with Bhai Mardana ji.  A Mughal came and saw us.  He called one of his servants and said to him: “these 3 people that are sitting here, arrest them and put weights on their heads.  Take them to the camp.”  The soldiers came and took us.  They made us carry heavy bags on our heads.  Bhai Mardana ji was given a horse to hold.  I was given a bag to carry on my head.  They wanted Guru ji to carry one as well but they didn’t know his greatness.  The bag flew one hand above Guru ji’s head.  Guru ji walked slowly to the camp.  As we walked, the both us were behind Guru ji.  His bag flew over his head.  Satguru ji spoke: “listen Mardana, play the Rabab in a beautiful way.”  Bhai Mardana ji said: “Prabhoo ji, how can a play the Rabab?  I am holding the reins of this horse.  He is jumping around too.  I am using all my strength to control him.  If he escapes, the Mughals will kill me.”  Guru ji said: “say Vahiguru and let go of the reins.  He will follow us.”  Bhai Mardana ji obeyed and let go of the reins.  He began to play the Rabab in Raag Asa.  Guru ji did an Alaap and uttered a Shabad.”

Asa Mahalla 1..

Having attacked Khorasan, he became its master; he terrified Hindustan.

The Karta Purakh did not take the blame; he sent the Mughal as the messenger of death.

There was so much slaughter that the people screamed.  Did You not feel their pain, Lord? ||1||

O Karta Purakh, You are the Master of all.  If a powerful man strikes another powerful man, then there is no grief. ||1||Rahao||

If a powerful tiger attacks milking cows (or animals) and kills them, then its master must answer for it.

These gems (humans) have been spoiled and thrown away by dogs, and no one cared about them.

You Yourself unite, and You Yourself separate; This is Your Glorious Greatness. ||2||

Is one gives themself a great name, and revel in the pleasures as they wish,

in the Eyes of the Master, they are just an insect eating corn.

Only one who dies to his ego and becomes alive (by knowing his Aatma), obtains the blessings, O Nanak, by chanting the Lord’s Name. ||3||5||39||

(SGGS 360)

In this way, Guru ji sang and walked on his way.  He was always in the single state of bliss.  The people watching were amazed to see this: “this is amazing!  We don’t understand.  His heavy bag is floating above his head.  He is walking with his companions.  The other is walking and the horse is following him without his reins being held.  These are certainly some saints.  It could be Khuddah himself.  He is really powerful.  We have never seen anything like this before.”  The soldiers and people watching folded their hands and bowed to Guru ji.  They had faith on Guru ji’s lotus feet.  As everyone reached the camp, the Mughal officer saw the prisoners with detail.  The officer saw Guru ji’s miracles.  He went to Babar and told him everything: “there is a Darvish among the prisoners.  Everyone is amazed to see him.  He performs miracles.  He is very powerful.  The heavy bag floats one hand above his head.  He has a Doom with him who is not holding the reins of the horse.  The horse is following him.  They are doing the Bandagi of Khuddah.  You should come for yourself to see who is the Fakir.”  Babar heard this and said: “if I had already heard about this, I wouldn’t have attacked this city where such Fakirs lived.”  He got up and came to see Guru ji.

Listen to the Katha of Guru ji, as it happened.  Many prisoners were tied up in the camp.  They suffered and cried out in pain and sorrow.  Every caste of Hindu women were there along with Turkanis and Pathaanis.  Everyone was given a grinder to grind wheat.  When Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji came to the camp, the bags were taken off their heads.  Guru ji was seated in the jail.  Two heavy grinders were placed in front of me and Bhai Mardana ji.  Grains were placed in front of us.  One grinder was placed in front of Guru ji as well.  They said: “quickly grind this wheat.”  The both of us quickly began to grind the wheat.  The other men and women grinded as well.  Sri Guru ji did not touch his grinder.  We would pick up the grains and put them in his grinder.  His grinder spun by itself.  Everyone was amazed to see this.  In the meantime, Babar had come.  He bowed his head on Guru ji’s feet, while the grinder spun by itself.  Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji saw Babar and said a Shabad after seeing the state of the people:

Raag Asa Mahalla 1 Ashtpadia Ghar 3..

Ik Oankaar Satgur Prasaad..

Those heads that were beautifully adorned with braided hair, with their partings filled with vermillion.  Those heads were shaved with scissors, and their necks were soiled with dust.  They lived in mansions, but now, they cannot even sit on the streets. ||1||

Hail to You, Baba, Hail to You!  O Primal Akaal Purakh, your end is not known by anyone; You create, and create, and behold the scenes. ||1||Rahao||

When they were married, their husbands looked so handsome beside them.  They came in dholis/palanquins, decorated with ivory pieces, arranged in beautiful ways; water was spun over their heads, and glittering fans were waved above them. ||2||

They were given hundreds of thousands of coins when they sat (for the first time in the home of their husbands), and hundreds of thousands of coins when they stood.  They ate coconuts and dates, and rested comfortably upon their beds.  Now, ropes were put around their necks, and their strings of pearls were broken. ||3||

Their wealth and youthful beauty have now become their enemies, which gave them so much pleasure.  The order was given to the soldiers, who dishonored them, and carried them away.  If it is pleasing to His Will, He bestows greatness; if it pleases His Will, He bestows punishment. ||4||

If someone focuses on the Lord beforehand, then why should he be punished?  The kings had lost their senses, reveling in pleasure and sensuality.  Baabar’s rule has been proclaimed; even the princes have no food to eat. ||5||

The Muslims have lost their times of prayers, and the Hindus have lost their worship as well.  Without their sacred Chownkas, squares, how shall the Hindu women bathe and apply the Tilaks to their foreheads?  They never remembered Raam, and now they cannot even chant Khuddah||6||

They used to return to their homes, and meeting their relatives, they asked about their wellness.  For some, it is pre-ordained that they shall sit and cry out in pain.  Whatever pleases Him, comes to pass. O Nanak, what is the fate of humankind? ||7||11||

(SGGS 417)

Babar heard this and stood in front of Guru ji.  He folded his hands and said: “tell me the meaning of this Shabad.  What are you speaking about?”  Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji said: “listen Babar, you have killed the Pathaans and looted the great city.  You took all their women and imprisoned them in your camp.  Times of pain are upon these people.  I saw their state and said a Shabad.  They used to have nice braids in their hairs with vermilion in their heads; with golden jewellery, looking nice; your soldiers cut their hair with scissors.  They pulled their earrings and ripped their earlobes.  They put dust on their faces and dishonored them.  They beat them up and asked them where the money was.  These beautiful women used to eat great delicacies but they never chanted the name of Kartaar from their mouths.  Today, there is feces on their face and they were told to speak of where the money was.  They used to live in beautiful homes which were pleasant during the day and night.  They have never seen a saint with their eyes.  They are now seen by other men who are low.  They have no place to sit.  They are in pain now.  Vahiguru, who is the controller, I bow to him, over and over again.  He is the beginning of all.  He is the indestructible Purakh.  His end cannot be found in any way.  He does many dramas in various ways.  He does as he pleases.  When these women were married, their handsome husbands sat by them.  They came in dholis.  They were first given sweets to eat.  Water was spun over their heads and sipped by their mothers-in-law.  They were very happy.  The maids waived fans over them.  Mirrors were on the fans which made them glitter.  The fans were great.  Many came to see the new brides and gave them money.  They ate coconuts and dates from their husbands.  They ate many delicacies.  They enjoyed the beds of their husbands.  They enjoyed many pleasures.  Now, they have stones around their necks.  Their pearl necklaces have been broken.  Youthfulness and wealth gave them joy but now it gave them pain.  The women who were young and wealthy, this trapped them.  They are told by your people: “give us more money!”  They lost their honour.  Your people slapped them.  What pleases Vahiguru, he gives punishment and greatness as he pleases.  Their clothes were made of silk and pashminas; their bodies could be seen through the cloths; what do we say about humans, even the sun and moon could not see them.  Their feet did not touch the ground.  They travelled on vehicles.  Your soldiers tied them up and made them walk on stones.  Their husbands were killed in the battle.  They were tied and imprisoned here.  They have tears in their eyes.  The kajal falls on their cheeks.  They scream out in pain.  Nobody has the power to free them.  Their relatives are all dead.  They never did the Simran of the Naam.  That is why they are suffering.  If they had done the Simran of the Kartaar, why would have they been in pain?  The rich Umraavs and Viziers forgot the Prabhoo because of their wealth.  The Prabhoo is deep and virtuous.  They only longed for the colours and pleasures.  They thought of many pleasures and vices.  Look what happened to them.  Their state can’t be seen now without feeling bad.  Babar, your rule has spread.  You destroyed the courts.  The big officers of the Pathaans did not get food.  They used to do their Nimaaz and Pooja on time.  They do not have the time now.  The Hindu women you have imprisoned, they used to bathe and apply the Tilaks; they would sit in the Chownka to eat; they sit in jail now.  They cry.  They have nothing to eat.  They cry out loud, shrieking in pain.  They never did the Simran of Ram in their mind.  They don’t get a chance to say Khuddah.  If some friends ask them how they are, what will they say?  What Vahiguru wishes, he does it right away.  The humans can’t do anything.  Nothing is in their hands.  Karta Purakh does as he wills.”  Babar heard the words of Sri Guru ji and had faith in his heart.  He saw Guru ji as very powerful.  He bowed and said: “show me your miracles.  I want to know how much power you have.  You are beloved to Khuddah.  Or are you Khuddah himself, taking on a human body?”  Guru ji said: “miracles are paths to destruction.  Ask me for something else.  Keep your mind still.  Don’t let it wander.”  Babar was fortunate.  He heard the words of Guru ji and had love in his heart for Guru ji’s feet.  He bowed to Guru ji’s feet and saw that Guru ji was drenched in the love of Khuddah.  He brought an offering of a bag full of cannabis for Guru ji.  He saw Guru ji as detached.  Guru ji had no wish for money or cannabis.  Guru ji said a Shabad when the cannabis was placed in front of him:

Tilang Mahalla 1 Ghar 2

Ik Oankaar Satgur Prasaad..

Fear (for the Lord) is my marijuana; my mind is the leather bag which holds it.  I have become a romantic and detached from the world.

My hands are my begging bowl; I hunger for (his) Darshan.  I beg at Your Door, day after day. ||1||

I long to be emersed with your Darshan.  I am a beggar at Your Door – please bless me with Your charity. ||1||Rahao||

Saffron, flowers, musk oil from the deer, embellish the bodies of all.  The Bhagats’ light and sandalwood impart their fragrances onto everyone. ||2||

No one looks at the pot holding the ghee or the worm from where the silk is from.  Such is the Bhagat, no matter what his social status is.

Those who bow in reverence to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, remain absorbed in Your Love.  Nanak begs for charity at their door. ||3||1||2||

(SGGS 721)

Babar heard this and bowed.  He became humble and said: “I know now that you are Khuddah in human form.  Please give me the boon that I may become the Badshah of the world.  May my descendants rule, generation after generation; enjoying the rule in peace.  The 4 gifts are in your hands and you can give them without delay.  Saints are really generous.  They can make big kings out of paupers and paupers out of kings.  You are the complete Prabhoo.  If you are happy with me, you can complete my wish.  Oh great being, bless me.”  The Compassionate One spoke with love: “you will enjoy the rule till you are just.  When your generations become unjust, your rule will be lost.  You will win over many lands with your strength and enjoy the rule.”  Babar was really happy to hear this.  He bowed to Guru ji’s Lotus feet, over and over again.  He became humble and said: “you are Dhan, Prabhoo!  You are the Home of Treasure.”  The soldiers then came and bowed to Guru ji’s feet while doing his Darshan.  A crowd gathered all around Guru ji.  Everyone came running to Guru ji.  Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji gave the boon of rule to Babar: “rule Delhi and other lands.”

Sri Guru ji looked towards the prisoners.  They were in pain, like winter coming to a jungle of lotuses.  Guru ji said to Babar: “release the many prisoners you have captured.  Whatever you have looted from them, give it all back to them.  Obey my command.”  When Babar heard Guru ji’s command, he released all of the prisoners.  Everyone identified their items and took them back.  Babar did not delay in giving the things back to the people.  Everyone took their things and left towards their homes.  The Master of the Universe went with the people back to the city.

When everyone came back to the city of Ahmnabad, they saw that it was in ruins.  Guru ji saw the destruction and the lack of men or women there.  He uttered a Shabad in Raag Asa:

Asa Mahalla 1..

Where are the games, the stables, the horses?  Where are the drums and the bugles?  Where are the sword-belts and chariots? Where are those scarlet uniforms?  Where are the rings and the beautiful faces? They are no longer to be seen here. ||1||

This world is Yours; You are the Lord of the Universe.  In an instant, You establish and disestablish. You distribute wealth as it pleases You. ||1||Rahao||

Where are the houses, the gates, the hotels and palaces?  Where are those beautiful way-stations?  Where are those beautiful women, reclining on their beds, whose beauty would not allow one to sleep?  Where are those betel leaves, their sellers, and the shops? They have vanished like shadows. ||2||

For the sake of this wealth, so many were ruined; because of this wealth, so many have been disgraced.  It was not gathered without sin, and it does not go along with the dead.  Those, whom the Creator Lord would destroy – first He strips them of virtue. ||3||

Millions of religious leaders failed to halt the invader, when they heard of the Emperor’s invasion.  He burned the rest-houses and the ancient temples; he cut the princes limb from limb, and cast them into the dust.  None of the Mughals went blind, and no one performed any miracle. ||4||

The battle raged between the Mughals and the Pathaans, and the swords clashed on the battlefield.  They took aim and fired their guns, and they attacked with their elephants.  Those men whose letters were torn in the Lord’s Court, were destined to die, O Siblings of Destiny. ||5||

The Hindu women, the Muslim women, the Bhattis and the Rajputs.  some had their robes torn away, from head to foot, while others came to dwell in the cremation ground.  Their husbands did not return home – how did they pass their night? ||6||

The Creator Himself acts, and causes others to act.  Unto whom should we complain?  Pleasure and pain come by Your Will; unto whom should we go and cry?  The Commander issues His Command, and is pleased.  Oh Nanak, we receive what is written in our destiny. ||7||12||

(SGGS 417-418)

Guru ji said this Shabad and sat outside of the city.  The people of the city began to come to him.  The people faced troubling times.  The Pathaans that had died, their blood flowed onto the ground.  Their faces were dirty with dirt.  The vultures ate their flesh and shrieked.  They looked scary.  The people saw the dead bodies.  The women identified their dead husbands and family members.  The Muslims buried their dead while the Hindus cremated them.  There was a lot of noise from the crying.  The women gathered and would beat their heads.  They yelled: “hai, hai, oh, oh.”  They talked about the dead and praised their qualities.  They all met in one place to cry.  They pulled their hairs and threw them to the ground.  They beat their faces and bodies in pain and grief.  They extended their arms towards the sky and cried.  Hearing the loud noises, Sri Prabhoo ji uttered a Shabad:

Ik Oankaar Satgur Prasaad..

Asa Kaafi Mahalla 1 Ghar 8 Ashtpadia..

As the cow tender is in the field for only a short time, so is one in the world.  One earns with lies and builds his/her home. ||1||

Wake up!  Wake up, Oh sleepers, see that the travelling merchant is leaving. ||1||Rahao||

Go ahead and build your houses, if you think you will stay here forever and ever.  The body shall fall, and the soul shall depart; if only they knew this. ||2||

Why do you cry out and mourn for the dead?  The Lord is, and shall always be.  You mourn for that person, but who will mourn for you? ||3||

You are engrossed in worldly entanglements, O Siblings of Destiny, and you are practicing falsehood.  The dead person does not hear anything at all; your cries are heard only by other people. ||4||

Only the Lord, who causes the mortal to sleep (in attachment), O Nanak, can awaken him again.  One who understands his true home, does not sleep (in attachment). ||5||

If the departing mortal took his wealth with him, then go ahead and gather wealth yourself.  See this, reflect upon it, and understand it. ||6||

Make your deals, and obtain the true merchandise, or else you shall regret it later.  Abandon your vices, and practice virtue, and you shall obtain the essence of reality. ||7||

Plant the seed of Truth in the soil of Dharmic faith, and practice such farming.  Only then will you be known as a merchant, if you take your profits with you. ||8||

If the Lord shows His Mercy, one meets the True Guru; contemplating Him, one comes to understand.  Then, one chants the Naam, hears the Naam, and deals only in the Naam. ||9||

As is the profit, so is the loss (because of the Karma); this is the way of the world.  Whatever pleases His Will, O Nanak, that is glory for me. ||10||13||

(SGGS 418)

After saying this Shabad, Guru ji remained sitting.  Guru ji’s compassion can make the mind still and peaceful.

2-29 Going to the Village of the In-laws/ Ajitha Blessed

The vices and pleasures are useless like the Simmal (Silk Cotton) Tree.  My mind, you are like a parrot.  Let go of the pleasures and serve the feet of the Satguru which are like the mangoes; tasty and nourishing.

Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..

The Gunkhaani Prabhoo remained seated.  Bhai Mardana ji said: “when you first came here with the saints, you sat here.  For food, I went to the city and wandered around the homes of the Pathaans.  They saw us hungry but didn’t give us any food.  The unwise people gave us pain.  Only some of them were disrespectful towards us.  The whole city suffered with pain.  I am confused seeing this.  I am asking you this.”  Guru ji said: “listen Mardana, in the city where saints and guests come to and they are not served, everyone in the city is punished.  The Dharma of the Ghrist is the highest: serve the guests.  Respect the saints and guests as much as you can.  Give them food to eat and speak sweet words.  These Khans were without Dharma.  They were corrupt-minded.  They were blinded by glory and ego.  They spoke nonsense so nonsense fell upon them.  They had forgotten the Khuddah, forever.”  Bhai Mardana ji was still confused a little but didn’t say anything.  Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji knew what he was thinking.  He wanted to take his confusion away.  After sitting for a long time, Bhai Mardana ji became lazy and fell asleep.  Guru ji saw this and had drops of honey put on the stomach of Bhai Mardana ji.  From the smell of the honey, insects came.  Many insects came.  An ant bit Bhai Mardana ji and he woke up.  He crushed all of the insects.  When they all died, he looked at them.  Guru ji said: “only one of them bit you.  Why did you kill all of them?  Think about what you did.”  Bhai Mardana ji understood the meaning.  He folded his hands and became humble.  He said: “oh Kirpa Nidhaan great Guru, you knew what was in my heart.”  We sat had laughed with each other.  Guru ji came to illuminate the Bhagti in the world.

Bhai Lallo ji and the Brahmin came back with their families.  They saw the state of Ahmnabad.  It was scary to look at.  The two of them came to Guru ji and grabbed Guru ji’s feet.  They saw Guru ji’s illuminated form, like the sun.  Their eyes gleamed like the lotus.  They praised Guru ji in many ways.  Guru ji was happy.  The two went back to the city and sang the glory of Satguru ji.  Hindus and Turks, they all came and grabbed Guru ji’s feet.  A great crowd gathered.  Guru ji gave them the wisdom of Satnam: “serve the saints and guests who come to you.  The glory of Seva is great.”  Guru ji stayed 2 more days and then travelled to where he pleased.

Guru ji wore clothes of saints, orange-pink robes.  His beard was white and black.  It was beautiful.  He was the creator of the 3 Loks.  He was the king of kings but travelling, wearing the clothes of Fakirs.  He travelled slowly and came to the village of his In-laws.  Where Ajitha’s well was, Guru ji came there.  There was a great shade over the well.  Guru ji saw a nice area and sat down.  We sat down as well while laughing and talking to Guru ji.  Guru ji said: “we travelled a lot.  We did it by the command of the Master.  We spent a long time travelling.  Let’s sing the praises of the Prabhoo with bliss.”  A person saw us and told Guru ji’s father-in-law, Mool Chand that we were here: “your son-in-law has come, who has left his home a long time ago.”  Baba Mool Chand ji got up and ran quickly.  He took Bhai Ajitha ji along.  Baba Mool Chand ji was really angry.  He saw Guru ji’s form, dressed as a Fakir, and got angrier.  He came to Guru ji and stood in front of him.  He spoke really harsh words: “have you come to burn my chest?  When my brothers see you like this, I will be in pain.  You left your woman and son.  You never came to see how they were.  Sri Chand was in the home of Jai Ram and was in bliss.  Since Bebe Nanaki ji and Bhaiya Jai Ram ji left this earth, Sri Chand came to my home to live with us.  I have been raising them all every since.  You never came to see how they were.  If you were to become a Fakir, why did you raise a family?”  Guru Nanak Dev ji kept listening.  He didn’t say a word from his mouth.  Bhai Ajitha ji then said: “don’t speak harsh words.  It is not right.”  After saying this, Baba Mool Chand ji went home and had good food made.  He took beautiful clothes and came back to Guru ji.  His chest was burning in anger.  He did not understand the way of Fakirs.  He placed the food in front of Guru ji and said: “eat this.  You have always given me pain.  Let go of these clothes of Fakirs.  Wear beautiful white clothes.  If my brothers see you like this, you will make me look bad.”  Guru ji did not eat the food nor did he wear the clothes.  He didn’t say anything.  Baba Sri Chand ji and Baba Lakhmi Das ji came and bowed to their father.  After about 3 hours of sitting, Guru ji did not eat the food nor wear the clothes.  Baba Mool Chand was really angry but there was nothing he could do.  He got up and came home.  Sri Guru ji remained sitting at the well.  Seeing him, the pain would run away.  The ones who knew Guru ji’s greatness, they all came for his Darshan.  They bowed and received the rewards of human life.  Some stayed with Guru ji and went back.  Some came and some left.  A crowd gathered at that place.  Many became Sikhs, taking wisdom.  They did the Simran of the Naam.  Their sins were washed away.  One would tell another; they would come and bow to Guru ji’s feet.  They would call him their Guru.  They would come to serve Guru ji for wishes.  Their wishes were fulfilled without a doubt.  Some came to make their minds pure.  They stayed with love.  Satsangat began to happen, a lot.  Keertan was done.  Devotion arose in their hearts.  The radiance of Guru ji’s Darshan was huge.  The people came attracted to this.  They walked on the righteous path.

The Chaudhary of the village, Bhai Ajitha ji, he saw the glory of Guru ji and understood in his mind.  Where the Light of the Bedis sat, Bhai Ajitha ji came there.  He became humble and had love in his heart.  He placed his head on Guru ji’s feet.  He did not lift his head.  Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji did not say anything.  He remained sitting, quietly.  He was the Giver of Mukti.  He didn’t raise Bhai Ajitha ji’s head.  3 hours passed like this with Bhai Ajitha ji’s head on Guru ji’s feet.  The Master looked upon him with compassion and spoke sweet words: “get up, oh beloved of the Kartar.  Tell me the wish of your heart.”  Guru ji raised the head of Bhai Ajitha Randhawa ji with his own hands and made him sit close to him.  Bhai Ajitha ji folded his hands and said: “you are the Master of every heart.  You know every heart.  You are omniscient.  What should I say to you?  Those who don’t know, I would speak to them.  You are omniscient.  I am better quiet in front of you.  You do what is best.”  Guru ji was happy to hear this.  He wanted to bless him.  With a great compassionate smile, Guru ji said: “bow before Kartar.  He will fulfill your wishes.”  Bhai Ajitha ji heard this and grabbed Guru ji’s feet again, for it was the Kartar himself in Human form.  As soon as he touched Guru ji’s feet, Gyaan came to his heart.  He saw the Brahmgyaan.  He saw his Aatma.  He became omnipotent and very powerful.  It was like a poor person receiving bags of millions.  He began to do Seva with love.  He received the unlimited powers.  His sins were all gone.  He spent many days like this.  Many people walked the path of Sikhi while in Vatala.

One day, Guru ji’s mother-in-law and father-in-law came to Guru ji with anger in their hearts.  Mata Sulakhani ji came as well.  Guru ji’s mother-in-law spoke: “listen, you have always walked the wrong path.  You have always burnt our chests.  You left your family: your sons and your wife.  You travelled in foreign lands, door to door.  What did you achieve by this?  You had your money given away to the poor.  You rejected the honour of the world, all at once.  You made us all run around.  People would talk about you, saying: “their son-in-law left the family and became a Fakir.”  Guru ji remained quiet.  He didn’t say a word to them.  Bhai Ajitha ji heard about everything.  He heard about Baba Mool Chand ji fight with Guru ji.  He quickly ran from his home and came to where Guru ji was.  He said to Mata Chando Rani ji: “why are you speaking so loudly, beating your head?  Why are you in pain?  Don’t you know that he is a great being?  He is really great.  You don’t know his greatness.  You bother him for no reason.  He isn’t giving you pain.  He is not saying anything.  He didn’t spoil any task of yours.  Not even a gainful’s worth.  He’s never asked anything from you, being the son-in-law.  The both of you don’t stop saying harsh words to him.  You keep getting angry at him.  He is a Fakir who has left the worldly attachments.  You have no work left with him.  Be content and sit in your home with patience.  Don’t say any nonsensical words.”  Baba Mool Chand ji spoke: “you are wise.  Listen Chaudhary, you know everything.  He used to have a lot of money before.  He gave it all away without delay.  He didn’t even think about how his sons and wife were going to eat in the future.  Everything is possible with money.  Everything takes money.  He gave his money to the poor, for no reason.  He renounced the reputation of the world and took on the form of a Fakir.  He spent a long time wandering foreign lands.  He has now come here and he still doesn’t let go of his ways.  He sits in front of us and burns my chest.  We worry for him, day and night.  Our relatives all laugh at us.  He doesn’t think of all that.”  Bhai Ajitha ji then spoke: “listen Chacha, you speak wisely.  If someone was a person of the world, they should do all those things you say.  Guru ji has no attachment, not even in his dreams.  He stays as he pleases.  You should stay quiet in front of him.  Understand what is good for you.”  Baba Moola ji said: “I won’t say anything anymore.  I want him to take care of his family.  I have to spend for all of them.  He never came to see how they are all doing.  He won’t straighten up if I say anything.  He walks a crocked path.”  Bhai Ajitha ji said: “listen oh Mehta Mool Chand, your grandsons: Sri Chand and Lakhmi Das, they are all grown up now.  They will earn.  Their mother, she is like my sister.  I will serve her.  (Bhai Ajitha ji had performed all of the traditions of the brother of the bride during Guru ji’s and Mata ji’s wedding) Send her to my home right away.  Send them all without delay.  Don’t have any doubts about this.  She is my sister and I can provide for her and the whole family.”  Baba Mool Chand ji said: “that won’t work.  I will be slandered in the whole world.  They will say: “he sent his daughter and grandkids to another home to be fed.”  Bhai Ajitha ji said: “if you know this, then stay quiet.  Why do you keep saying these things in front of everyone?  He is a Sadhoo and also your son-in-law.  It is not right by any tradition to speak to him that you are speaking to him.  Guru ji’s greatness cannot be known by anyone.  He is the same in joy and sorrow.  He is the Sadhoo who renounced everything.  He is the greatest Sadhoo.”  Baba Mool Chand ji said: “you call him a Sadhoo.  I don’t see anyone more guilty than him.  There is nobody worse than him.  He burns my chest, everyday.  What qualities of Sadhoos does he have?  His name has spread in the world.”  Mata Chando Rani ji spoke in anger: “he calls himself a Tappa.  It is false.  He dresses like a Fakir.  He left his woman and sons to travel the foreign lands.  He made them like orphans and left them.  He had no compassion towards them.  I fear the Parmeshwar and don’t say anything.  Otherwise I would have made his life difficult.  I would expose his hypocrisy right now of how he left his family and travelled the world.”  Guru ji stayed quiet.  He did not say a word.

Mata Sulakhani ji then spoke to Guru ji: “what can I can to you?  Why did you leave the honour of the world?  Why are you shameless?  Why do you wander?  Why did you marry me?  If you wanted to wear the Bhagva clothes, why did you leave me without support?  You never came back to see how I was.”  Bhai Ajitha ji spoke: “listen sister, it would be good if you stay quiet.  People need food and clothes.  I will do your Seva.  Tell me what you need.  Your parents are older.  They can say what they want to.  It is not right for you to say anything.  You spoke harsh words to your husband.  Your hatred will grow.  Your conflict will grow.  You have many tasks left to do with him still.  All of your joys are with him.  He will give you all the joy.”  Mata Sulakhani ji spoke: “listen brother, you are wise.  I am alone.  Who will support me?  My parents swear at me, all the time.  They want me to leave.  They speak harsh words and taunt me.  They say to me: “you should become a Fakir as well and sit where your husband is.  Wear the clothes of Sadhoos like your husband.  You are around our necks all the time.”  I speak the truth.  This is what they say to me.  They do speak the truth.  I am “his” wife.  My sister-in-law, Bebe Nanaki ji, she gave me joy till she was alive.  Sri Chand ji lived with her in her home.  He ate and wore well in her home.  He was happy there and did what pleased him.  I wasn’t worried about him.  I used to see my sister-in-law often.  Since she left this world with her husband, we have been in pain.  I see bad in every direction.  How will my life be?”  She then began to cry after saying all that.  She took deep breaths and looked towards the ground.

Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji heard his wife’s words and became compassionate, deeply.  He said: “listen oh daughter of Chauni (Mata ji’s maiden family name), if you can tolerate the pain and hunger I will go through, then you can stay with me.  Whatever will happen to me, will happen to you.”  Mata Sulakhani ji said: “listen to my words, I don’t wish for jewellery.  What I wish for is to be in the same state that you are in.  I will take pain and hunger on my body.  I want to live with you all the time.”  Prabhoo ji said: “if this is what you wish for then bring our sons and stay with me, right now.  Kartaar will always do good with you if your devotion is deep.”  When Mata Sulakhani ji heard this, she ran to her parents’ home and brought her 2 sons with her.  She came back with great happiness to Guru ji.  There was a great eagerness in her heart.  Baba Mool Chand ji and Mata Chando Rani ji went to their home with depression.  They had nothing to say.  They stayed quiet and regretted their actions.

Taking Baba Sri Chand ji along with Baba Lakhmi Das ji, Mata Sulakhani ji sat beside Guru ji.  Her joy was deep.  She was extremely happy, being with her husband.  Where the Destroyer of Sins was sitting (near the well of Ajitha Randhawa ji), the two sons bowed to Guru ji’s feet.  They started to live with their father.  All of the worries were gone.  All of the Sevas were done by Bhai Ajitha ji with love.  Bhai Ajitha ji became really powerful with all the Siddhis and Ridhis by doing all of the Seva.  His doubt of being born and dying was destroyed.  He was a complete and powerful Brahmgyaani.

2-30 Establishing Kartarpur/ The Purity of the Brahmin’s Kitchen

Become detached to the vices and love the feet of the Guru.  Focus on the Simran of the Naam and be awake.  Become fortunate.

Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..

After staying there for many days, Guru ji’s glory grew by the day.  Baba Moola ji noticed that and finally figured out that Guru Nanak Dev ji was great and deserving.  He let go of all his previous thoughts and came to Guru ji with his hands folded: “you are a complete and great being.  I couldn’t see your beautiful ways as great.  I slandered you day and night.  I was stuck in the bonds of the world.  Please forgive my sins.  You are our honour.”  Guru ji saw his father-in-law as humble and became compassionate.  He said: “do the Simran of Satnam, which gives Mukti.  Do the Satsangat and be in joy.  Bow before Kartar and you will easily get Mukti.”  Baba Moola ji bowed his head.  As soon as he bowed, the curtains of attachment fell.  His attention became focused in Simran.  His duality finished.  He came home and told his wife.  Mata Chando Rani ji regretted the past.

For some days, they all did the Satsang of Guru ji.  The in-laws had a lot of love arise in their hearts.  They became Vivekis (understanding that Akaal Purakh was infinite and the world was destined to be destroyed) in a few days.  They saw the infinite from the finite.  They were Aatam Gyaanis.  They saw the Sat (truth) from the Asat (myth).  Their age was soon complete.  They left their bodies with ease and joy.  They went to the home of the Prabhoo, Sach Khand, where the pure-minded Bhagats live.  Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji blessed them.  He continued staying there in Vatala, thinking of the love of the Sikhs.

After a few days, Guru ji got ready to go.  He gave hope to all.  He travelled along the shore of the Raavi.  Myself and Bhai Mardana ji followed.  Guru ji saw a nice place on the shore and sat down.  Guru ji was the Pavan Ahaari (extracting nourishment from the wind), like a Tapisvar doing a deep Tapp.  People of the area heard of Guru ji’s arrival and came to meet him.  They bowed to his lotus feet with love and took his wisdom to become Sikhs.  They did his Seva and washed their sins away.  One would tell another about Guru ji and they would come to see him.  They would come for Guru ji’s Darshan.  The ones who lived near the village, they gathered and praised Guru ji: “this Sadhoo is omnipotent.  His Darshan destroys the sins.  He is very powerful.  Whatever he says, becomes reality.  He is always in the love of the Master.  He is calm.  Never with a wandering mind.  He is a beloved Dervish of the Khuddah, or Khuddah himself.”  Many people came to see him.  Guru ji would answer their questions.  Sanyasis, Brahamachaaris and Ghristis; Tappis, Bairagis, Jungle Dwellers, Jogis, Vaishnavas, Hindus and Muslims; if they came with a doubt, Prabhoo ji would give them the answer right away.  People listened and had devotion in their hearts.  They wrote down the Shabads of Gurbani and pondered on them.

People of Lahore would come and become Guru ji’s servants.  They would learn the wisdom of Naam, Charity and Ishnaan.  They learnt Keertan and sung it.  There was a Khatri in Lahore named Krori Mal.  Whenever he heard Guru ji’s praise, he would get angry.  Nobody would praise Guru ji in front of Krori Mal, fearing him.  Lahore was the capital of Luv.  Krori Mal was the leader and ruled the area.  He was foolish.  He couldn’t hear the glory of the master.  One day, Jogis wandered the area of Lahore and sang Gurbani.  They had an Ektara in their hand and walked with love as they sang.  They came to the place where Krori Mal’s home was.  They sat near the fool.  He heard the Shabad and became jealous.  It was like somebody was given poison.  He was blind in his greatness.  He was an Agyaani and Bemukh from saints.  He was without joy.  His chest burnt.  He was in pain.  The Jogis sang a Shabad:

Sri Mukhvaak M:1..

Nanak says oh mind, listen to the teachings that are true.. Rabb will ask you for your account, Dharmaraja will sit and take out his book..  The sinners will be called out loud, the ones who owe.. The Azrael will come and stand upon your head to punish you..  You won’t know where you came from or where you are going.. The halls are really narrow..  Your lies will finished there, Nanak says, only truth will be heavy..2..

Krori Mal heard this and got angry.  He said: “he has misled the Hindus.  I saw that the Turks lost their honour too.  They praise him too.  Who is this “Nanak?”  I’ve never seen him, whom the Hindus and Turks praise.  His praises have spread everywhere.  I don’t understand this.  Who is this; whom everyone in Kaliyuga follows?  I have analyzed this: all these people see others and become servants.  He walks a crocked path.  Others have lost their ways.  I don’t think this is good.  How can I blame others?  The one who started this, he should be arrested.  He should be thrown and interrogated in the jail.  I will stop his ideology.”  He said this in his court.  He took his servants with him and said: “go get my horse and saddle it.  Bring it here.”  One of the servants saddled his horse and brought it to him.  When Krori Mal was about to mount the horse, he put his foot in the stirrup of the horse; the horse jumped.  Krori Mal couldn’t control the horse.  He fell to the ground.  His Pugri fell off his head.  He saw this as a bad omen.  He went back home.  The people close to him advised him: “Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is a great being.”  Krori Mal insulted them: “I will go in the morning.”  The fool spent the night and got ready in the morning.  He mounted his horse.  Many other officers went with him.  They all headed towards Sri Prabhoo ji.  When they came close, Krori Mal went blind.  He couldn’t see anything.  His ego was destroyed.  He was in pain.  The sinner would not speak as he had slandered.  He understood that Guru ji was very powerful.  He thought to himself: “many wise people stopped me but I didn’t listen to them because of my ego.  If many people try to convince you, if you don’t listen, you will be in pain.”  He was drooping in depression.  People saw that he had gone blind.  He was humble.  Krori Mal said: “I understand his greatness now.  He is as you said he was.  I am blind because of my doings.  He is a great being.  I was jealous of him.  I was punished for this, with pain.  Come walk with me, oh people, help me be forgiven.  I spoke harsh words.  I want to be forgiven.  I wish to be his servant now.  I will become his Sikh.  I want him to keep me.”  The people heard this and said: “you now know him.  Get off your horse and bow to him by placing your head on the ground.  Go with faith and devotion.  Fall to his feet.  He will forgive you.  He is compassionate.  He is the lover of his Bhagats.  It is his ancient Dharma.”  Krori Mal destroyed his ego and got off his horse.  He walked barefoot.  He bowed by his every step.  He praised Guru ji in many ways.  From a long way he yelled: “forgive me!  Forgive me!  I am your servant.  I am an insect boasting in front of Garud; a pebble boasting in front of the Sumer; a firefly trying to compare itself to the sun.  I am a fool.  I was greedy.  I slandered you a lot.  I am guilty, Prabhoo!  Forgive me oh Compassionate One!”  He spoke like this with depression.  He tripped as he walked.  He couldn’t walk straight.  One person grabbed his hand and led the way to the Master of the Universe.  He brought him to Guru ji’s feet.  Krori Mal said: “I come to your sanctuary.”  He laid down like a stick.  He asked for forgiveness.  He didn’t lift his head for a while.  Guru ji saw his state and became compassionate.  He said: “get up and open your eyes.  Stop thinking everything.”  Hearing the compassionate words, Krori Mal got up, observing himself as been forgiven.  He could see again as he did before.  He folded his hands and bowed.  He got up and spoke with love in his heart: “you blessed me.  Keep me by your feet.  Accept my gifts.  Where you are sitting now, this place is beautiful.  I own it.  You can have this land and make a Dharamsala.  Establish an independent village here.  It will belong to you.  You will have the land and fields.  Give food to your Sikhs and saints.  Name it with your name.  Accept this gift of mine.”  Guru ji said: “if this is your wish, do the Seva.  Nobody will stop you.  The Satsangat will come and rest here.  They will gather and do Simran of the Naam.”  The Khatri sent his men to call the tradesmen.  Where Guru ji was sitting, a building was erected right away.  A city was founded.  Homes were built.  With time, many people came and settled in this place.  The place was called “Sri Kartarpur.”  A beautiful Dharamsala was constructed there.  The Khatri requested Satguru ji to go into the Dharamsala.  A beautiful bed was laid out inside with nice sheets.  He seated Guru ji there with love.  Divas were lit and Guru ji’s Aarti was done.  They said: “Jai Jai Guru, oh giver of joy to the Bhagats.  You destroyed the Asuras and saved the Vedas.  You killed Raavan and Kans.  You are Narsingh and the one who pierced Baali’s chest.  I am a fool who made a grave mistake.  I beg you to save me!  Forgive me!  You destroy the darkness of sins.  You are the sun.  The Bhagats are the fish in the water of Naam.”  When Guru ji heard this, Krori Mal’s doors of his Koshes opened.  Guru ji gave him the gift of Bhagti.  He gave him the boon.  Krori Mal did the Seva of Guru ji.  He stayed there with love for many days.  He then left and came back to Lahore.  Guru ji’s praise spread in every direction.

As the Sikhs heard about Guru ji’s newly established city, they all came to him.  They stayed close to Guru ji and served him.  They received a lot of joy from this.  Mata Sulakhani ji was in bliss.  She was wise.  She obeyed her husband and brought both of her sons to stay with the Master of the Universe.  A beautiful home was made for them in Kartarpur.  The whole family lived there with joy.  A beautiful Dharmsala was also made.  Guru ji sat in the middle of the Dharamsala.  Keertan happened day and night.  It was intense.  The Sikhs sang Shabads and then pondered on the meanings.  Crops and vegetables were planted in the fields by the Sikhs.  When they were ripe, they were harvested.  The crops and grains were brought to Guru ji to be made into Langar.  Nobody was left hungry.  A lot of food was made from the crops grown on Guru ji’s fields.  Langar was continuous all the time.  Many people began to gather and did Seva on the fields and in the Langar.  They did Guru ji’s Darshan and received the reward of their lives.

There was a Karam-Kaandi Brahmin that lived nearby.  He was well educated.  He came to Guru ji one day.  He gave Guru ji a blessing when he met him.  He was in pain because of not receiving food.  He saw the Langar.  Guru ji said to the Brahmin: “If you are hungry, eat the food.  It is ready to eat.”  The Brahmin said: “I don’t eat like this.  The food is not made according to the correct tradition.  I follow the Karam Kaands according to the Veda.  I eat food made with purity.  I cook myself and eat.  I dig the ground 1.5 hands deep.  I use the cow dung to purify it.  I bring water from the well.  I wash the firewood and light the fire.  I select the grains and prepare the food with purity and correct hygiene.  Only then is the food good to eat for me.  I only eat that food.  You have not done all this, so I can’t eat.”  Guru ji, the Gareeb Nivaaj, spoke: “oh Brahmin, take the dry and raw uncooked food then.  You can prepare it in your way.”  The Brahmin took the raw crops and grains.  He began to dig the ground.  As he dug, he found bones in the ground.  He left the place and went to another place.  He dug the new place and found more bones.  He saw the place as impure.  He then went to another place.  Wherever he dug, he would only find bones.  The Sikhs stood and watched.  They were surprised to see this.  The Brahmin dug all day long.  He was hungry and tired.  He was upset and came back to Prabhoo ji.  He folded his hands and said: “wherever your food is, give me that.  I will eat it as it is.  You are a great being.  You are the Gunkhaani.  I didn’t obey you before.  I made a big mistake.  My body is really tired and hungry.  I will obey your command now.”  Guru ji heard this and said: “Brahmin ji, that time has passed now.  What is done, is done.  Now, say “Vahiguru” and make the ground pure.  Make your kitchen and make your food.  Remove all of the doubts in your heart.”  The Brahmin obeyed and made a kitchen without any doubt.  After he ate, he came to Guru ji.  Guru ji then uttered a Shabad:

Basant Mahalla 1..

The stove made of gold, and pots made of gold as well.  The line markings of the cooking square made of silver, spread out wide.

The water from the Ganga purifies the firewood, the fire from the Yagna (made from rubbing 2 wooden sticks or striking 2 rocks).  Garuda Rice cooked in milk. ||1||

Oh mind, these are of no accounts if you are not drenched with the True Name. ||1||Rahao||

One may have the eighteen Puranas written; the four Vedas memorized by heart, taken baths of Purbi (holy festivals); and give charitable donations according to caste; observe the fasting, and perform Nem (daily recitations) day and night. ||2||

He may be a Qazi, a Mullah or a Shaykh, a Yogi or a wandering hermit wearing saffron-colored robes; he may be a householder, working at his job; without understanding (the form of Parmeshwar/the real self), the Jumms (Messengers of Death) will tie you and take you away. ||3||

Each person’s karma is written on their forehead.  According to their deeds, they shall be judged.  The foolish and the ignorant issue commands.  Nanak says, the True Ones are those who have the praise of the Parmeshwar in their treasures. ||4||3||

The Brahmin heard this and folded his hands.  He bowed and placed his head on Guru ji’s feet.  He became a Sikh of the Satguru and began to do the Simran of the Master of the Universe.  His attention became focused in Prema Bhagti.  The love for the Satnam Simran arose in his heart.  He received a lot of blessings from Guru ji’s compassion.  The doubt (of not knowing that the Aatma is the real form which illuminates the mind and the false sense of self) of the Brahmin was quickly destroyed.
