2-21 Resurrecting the Elephant in Delhi/ The Pooja of Mardana
Obeisance to Chandika, the radiant one, Mandika, the nurturer of all. When you are happy, you destroy the sorrow of your servants. You killed the Daynts and saved the Wielder of the Vajra, Inder. Oh Sarasvati/ Bani, complete this Granth. I bow to you.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, listen to the great Katha of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. The Home of Virtues travelled on to where the great city of Delhi was. Guru ji sat in a garden and Bhai Mardana ji sang a Raag with love. Guru ji listened with love. The Raag was loved. After about an hour, everyone went quiet. The Badshah, Sikander Lodhi, had a great big elephant. Where Guru ji was, the elephant was there and died. The Mohavat was crying as he was worried about his work. He was humble and crying. He was crying as though a cheap person lost his money. When Guru ji saw him, he became compassionate. Guru ji asked: “why are you crying? Did someone beat you up, scold you or rob you? Do you not understand your Karma?” The Mohavat saw Guru ji and noticed that he was a great saint. He folded his hands and bowed. He spoke in praising and humbled words: “listen to my state oh Darvish ji: this elephant was big and strong. He became sick and died. Nobody could figure out what was wrong with him. I am the Mohavat of the elephant. This elephant belongs to the Badshah. I made a living by serving this elephant. As the elephant died, I no longer have work. I won’t get paid now. How can I provide for my family? I don’t know anything else by which I can earn a living. I am crying because of this pain. How will I make a living?” Sri Guru ji said: “don’t worry. Kartar gives to everyone. These are just excuses in the world by which he gives. Understand that it is just the Kartar that gives. Don’t cry over the elephant’s death. Do the Simran of the Prabhoo with your mind. It is He who gives birth and gives death. There is no other than the One Vahiguru. He gives everyone sustenance. He will make another medium to give to you. He gives day and night. The saints who are looking for the Prabhoo, they know that he gives to all.” When the Mohavat heard this, he knew that it was a complete saint who gives bliss. He folded his hands, bowed and said: “how can my mind be at peace? My food is blocked from today onwards, from the Shah. You are the one doing everything. You are carefree. I am the servant of the Badshah. You are the servant of the Khuddah. If my work is stuck, I request my king to fulfill my task. We fold our hands and he completes our task. The good king listens. Khuddah is your king. Ask him to make the elephant alive again. Kartar will listen to you. Please do this for me, oh Sant ji. He listens to the Darvish. He is compassionate. There is nobody more in pain than me.” He became humble and bowed to Guru ji, over and over again. Seeing the state of the Mohavat, Prabhoo ji smiled. He became compassionate and said: “go and bring me a pot of water.” The Mohavat went quickly and brought back a pot of water.” Guru ji said to Bhai Mardana ji: “take this water and say Satnam. Sprinkle the water on the dead elephant.” Bhai Mardana ji obeyed and picked up the pot of water. He went to the elephant and sprinkled water on it while saying Vahiguru. He sprinkled the water all over the elephant’s body. The elephant’s Pranas came back right away. The Mohavat was happy to see the elephant alive again. He bowed to Satguru ji, over and over again. He praised Guru ji.
The Mohavat went to the Badshah and said: “your elephant is alive again by the blessing of the saint. This Fakir is Khuddah himself. I asked him over and over again. He blessed me.” Everyone in the court was surprised to hear this. They all came to do the Darshan of Guru ji. The Badshah took his Qazi to see Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. They all bowed to Guru ji’s feet and sat down near him. The Qazi then said: “the elephant that died, with the Mohavat; did you make him alive again? We heard your glory and came to do your Darshan.” The Master looked towards the Qazi and spoke words without ego: “who am I to resurrect the dead? Only the Kartar gives birth and death. Nobody else has such a power. His power is omnipresent.” The Qazi said: “if you have this power than make the elephant dead by your words. If the elephant dies by your words than I will see that you are the Powerful One.” Prabhoo ji said: “when the command of the Khuddah comes, that is what will happen.” The elephant fell dead right away. It lay dead on the ground. There was a Peer named Nizamuddin that sat near the Badshah. He said to the Qazi: “this is Khuddah himself in a human body. His words can never be without fruit. Have faith in him, then there will be no pain.” The Qazi said: “make the elephant alive again. I will believe that you are Khuddah then.” Guru ji heard this and said: “if the saints kill someone with their words, nobody can make them alive again. The will of the saints cannot be erased. The command of Ishwar can be reversed by the saints but nobody can reverse the commands of saints. The world is blind by the illusion of Maya; everyone has forgotten themselves. The Satguru can make one wise again by giving them the Naam. The Satguru can save anyone he wishes. He can break any bond of attachment. Just as Durvasa came to Ambreek; (Raja Ambreek fasted on the Dwadashi. He hadn’t eaten one Dwadashi day. He was going to do Pooja in the evening and eat. Durvasa came during the time of opening the fast. Ambreek seated Durvasa to give him food. Durvasa purposely went out to bathe and came back at night. Ambreek waited and did his Pooja. He ate his food while waiting. Durvasa came back and got angry to curse Ambreek, because he ate before him. Parmeshwar then sent his Sudarshan Chakar after Durvasa to save Ambreek from the curse. Durvasa ran for his life. He asked everyone to be saved but everyone refused. He asked Ambreek for forgiveness and only then was he saved) Durvasa was angry. The burning Chakar chased Durvasa. Durvasa, avoiding being burnt and ran for his life. He went to Surya, Chander, Inder, Brahma, Shiva, and Vishnu; nobody could save him. Durvasa then went back to the Bhagat Raja Ambreek to beg for forgiveness. Ambreek saved him from the burning Chakra. The glory of the saints is great. Whatever the Ikankaar does, the saints can reverse but the words of the saints can never be reversed by anyone.” They all heard Guru ji’s words and bowed to his feet, seeing him as their Guru. Peer Nizamuddin folded his hands and spoke with humility: “everyone has come to your shelter. Please do this good deed of making the elephant alive again. I know that there is no difference between you and Khuddah. You can do what you wish.” Guru ji said: “Mardana, get up and sprinkle water on the elephant. Peer ji is asking. Make the elephant alive again.” Bhai Mardana ji got up and sprinkled water on the elephant. He said the Satnam, by which the elephant got up again. The elephant was beautiful. Everyone was amazed to see the miracle. They bowed to Guru ji’s feet, over and over again. They said: “please give us wisdom. You are Khuddah in the body of a Fakir.”
Guru ji said: “listen Badshah, do the justice according to the Dharma. Qazi, never take bribes. Keep the Dharma and don’t give pain to anyone. Go to the Satsangat and do their Seva. Wash the filth (of jealousy and hatred) from your mind. Do the Simran of Satnam, day and night. Have faith in your heart in a good way. Give the Dasvand in the name of Khuddah. Do justice by Dharma. You will receive Mukti in this way. Earn your money in this way.” Everyone heard the wisdom. They were all content. Guru ji took leave from them.
The Master of the Universe travelled on. He was going to fulfill the wish of Bhai Mardana ji. Bhai Mardana ji was thinking to himself: “I would like to be praised. I want to be bowed to by men and women. I want them to bring me great gifts.” The Omniscient One sensed this. Guru ji smiled and said: “what you are thinking of, while walking behind me, your wish will be fulfilled in the next place we go to. These are all garbage things though. Nothing is achieved by them. It stops you from walking on the path of Mukti. One wishes to be praised. We are only here for a short period of time. The joy in the afterlife is better. One does not think of that. One does not think of Mukti. The ones who stay in this world with humility, only they are praised in the other world.” Bhai Mardana ji heard this and felt embarrassed. He said: “by your compassion, one can then only figure this out.” As we talked, the next city arrived.
Prabhoo ji sat under a tree, outside of the city. He said: “go Mardana and roam around the city as you wish.” Bhai Mardana ji did not want to go. He was embarrassed from Sri Prabhoo ji. Guru ji insisted and Bhai Mardana ji eventually went. Bhai Mardana ji entered the gate of the city. The people of the city saw Bhai Mardana ji and brought gifts for him. Nobody asked him anything. They all put gifts at Bhai Mardana ji’s feet. They saw him and went home to get gifts and foods. Many types of food were brought to Bhai Mardana ji. He sat in a nice place. His great Pooja was being done. Many expensive clothes of different colours came. Nobody said anything though. Some brought money. They became his servants by their minds and words. Hindus and Turks; they all saw Bhai Mardana ji as a great being. The others that heard about him, came running to Bhai Mardana ji, bringing many gifts. They said: “this is a great saint. Doing his Darshan will give us Mukti. Whoever gives him gifts they will be saved. The gifts will be a success.” The gifts piled up. Bhai Mardana ji was happy to see the gifts.
After 6 hours, Bhai Mardana ji got up, seeing his desire fulfilled. He had the gifts tied up and carried upon the heads of his servants. He made them bring the gifts to where Guru ji was. He came to Guru ji and said: “they are all my servants. They did my Pooja and brought me many gifts. They didn’t even ask me who I was. They talked amongst themselves and saw me as a saint. They brought me the gifts.” All of the gifts were placed in front of Guru ji. Guru ji laughed and said: “what did you bring? You seem quite happy. Your face is gleaming like a lotus.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “listen my Prabhoo, by your compassion, I came into the city. Your words became true. I was worshipped. I am happy. I brought beautiful clothes and money for you.” To show Guru ji, Bhai Mardana ji opened the bags. Guru ji saw all of the gifts and then saw the state of greed Bhai Mardana ji was in. The Master laughed out loud. After a long time, Guru ji said: “it’s a good thing you brought these gifts here. These are of no use to you. Listen to me and do this: give all of these things away. The poor people will be happy to receive them. They will bless you on your head.” Bhai Mardana ji got embarrassed at Guru ji’s laugh. He thought to himself: “I am unwise. I’ve seen lands of gold and diamonds but I wasn’t greedy then. These gifts are so small compared to those places. I got greedy with praises and small gifts. I had forgotten.” The poor people that were standing by, Bhai Mardana ji gave all of the gifts to them. He became detached to everything. He then stayed in the support of Satguru ji. He didn’t think of these things again. His mind was drenched in Sat and Santokh. The vices never returned. He was happy with what he got.
Prabhoo ji then got up and travelled on. He came into a very amazing form. He had a Tilak of Kesar on his forehead. He wore a Kulha Topi, high hat, on his head. He wore clothes of Bhagva (pink/orange) and wrapped a blue shawl around his body. He put a big mala around his neck. He held a handkerchief in his hand. In one foot, who wore a shoe with a point and in the other who wore a single-pegged wooden sandal. He could not be identified if he was a Hindu or a Muslin. Such was his form. His beard was black and white. His words were sweet, convincing the wisest of people. If Turks questioned him, he would respond in the Turk tradition. If a Hindu came, Guru ji responded to them in their language. People couldn’t tell what tradition Guru ji followed. Such a form he took on. The Master of the Universe travelled on. He would give wisdom to everyone on the way: “do the Simran of the Naam. Wash the vices and desires from your mind. Serve the Satsangat with love and focus.”
2-22 Cursing Lahore/ The Brahmin/ The Prasang of Villages
Oh my mind, I bow to you to keep my honour. Leave the vices and go to the shelter of Sri Satguru ji so you will be saved in this world.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Oh great Home of Virtues, Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, listen to the beautiful Katha that gives peace. Guru Nanak Dev ji took on his form and travelled on to bless others. As we travelled, we reached Lavpur (Lahore). Where the butchers’ lived, we came. Guru ji stopped where the butcher shops were. He saw the grave sin of cows being butchered. Recognizing the Tapp the Turks had done in their previous births, Guru ji stopped his anger. He wanted to destroy them but held back. He still had a little anger and said:
Sri Mukhvaak..
In the city of Lahore, chaos will break out in the 1.25 Pahir..27..
(SGGS 1412)
His words turned to reality. He spoke: “listen Bala, it is the time of the Turks. They are really strong now. When I wear my 10th incarnation, I will illuminate the Panth of Dharma. I will pick up weapons and wage war. I will lift the command of the Turks and stop the grave sins. The kingdom of Dharma will rule. Mardana, Bala, let’s not stop here. Let’s go!”
We came out of the city and saw a hypocritical Brahmin. He set up a façade. He prepared the ground with cow dung and laid out a grass tarp. He took his clothes off and bathed in the Ravi. He had 12 Tilaks on his body. He placed the Salagrama in front of him and did its Pooja with great care. He rang a bell in his hand and bowed his hand, over and over again. After that, he took his Mala and sat down with his eyes closed. A cat would be embarrassed seeing this façade (while pretending to be asleep to hunt a pigeon). He was greedy for money. Many people came to bow to the Brahmin, seeing him sit in Samadhi. They placed money in front of him. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji knew what was in the Brahmin’s heart. Guru ji spoke to reveal the façade: “oh Brahmin, what are you meditating on? The Salagrama is in front of you. If your Isht was not near you, then it makes sense to close your eyes and focus on him. Your Isht’s idol is in front of you. Why are you closing your eyes?” The Brahmin spoke hypocritical words: “listen Fakir, you don’t know what I am doing. I did the Seva of the idol and I bowed to it many times. By closing my eyes, I stop my mind and can see what is happening in the 3 Loks.” He spoke and sat in meditation. He was just showing off to people. He was filled with ego. He was greedy for money. The greed grew as more money came to him. To destroy the bad wisdom, the Master of the World made the stool of the idol and money disappear. After about an hour, the Brahmin opened his eyes and realized the idol and the money was all gone. He regretted and yelled out in pain. He got worried and asked the other people there of where his things were. Everyone said they didn’t see anything. Guru ji said to the Brahmin: “tell me what happened. You were happy a little while ago. What happened now? Did some task of yours spoil?” The Brahmins said: “oh saint, someone took my idol of the Salagrama as well as the stool with money on it. I am asking if anyone has it but nobody knows.” Guru ji said: “you said you knew what was happening in the 3 Loks. You should focus and find out what happened. Who would take it? See with your focus in every place.” Hearing the words, the Brahmin knew that Guru ji knew. He let his façade go and spoke the truth: “I do this for a living so I can eat. I lie and collect money from people. I do this to raise my family. People respect me when I sit with my eyes closed. The truth is, Sant ji, this is just a façade. The idol is my way of living. If you know where it is, please tell me. If you saw someone taking it, tell me.” Guru ji became compassionate and said: “let go of lies and speak the truth. Chant the name of Hari with a pure Aatma. Let go of this façade and always speak the truth. Sri Prabhoo ji will provide for you. The One nurtures all. Would he not give you food as well?” The Brahmin said: “without lying, one cannot make a living. Everyone worships façades. They can’t recognize the truth. The one who lies, people respect the façade. I do this to make a living. I can’t find the idol now.” Sri Guru ji said: “you were able to stop your mind and meditate on the 3 Loks. Where you were sitting, there was money buried there. If you knew everything, why did you not look there first? Dig the ground and look, if you can’t sense it.” The Brahmin heard about the money and got happy. He dug the ground where he was sitting. He was amazed to see a lot of money come out of the ground. He understood that Guru ji was omniscient. He was really happy. Guru ji laughed and said a Shabad:
Dhanasri Mahalla 1 Ghar 3..
Ik Oankaar Satgur Prasaad..
There is no time, there is no Jog, there is no way to speak the truth..
The places of the Ishts in the world are impure, the world is sinking..1..
In Kaliyuga the Naam of Raam is the greatest. .
You close your eyes and grab your nose to loot the world..1.. Rahao..
(SGGS 662)
Sri Guru ji said: “Listen Brahmin, these façades give pain in the end time. When the Jumms come, they beat your head with sticks. Just as the heron stands in a meditative pose, you sit in the same way, speaking words of Gyaan from your mouth. You do this to gather money. Your mind is engrossed in greed and wanders. This façade you do will give you pain in the end. In the time of Kaliyuga there is nothing greater than the Naam. The Teeraths of Devatas on the shores of rivers, without the Naam, the Seva is useless there. If you want Mukti during this time, engross your mind in the greatness of the Naam. Let go of the Pooja of façade. Let go of corruption and do the Simran of the Naam. Focus your mind in it, day and night. If you listen to me, you will be happy in both Loks. Ridhis and Siddhis will come into your hands.” The Brahmin folded his hands and said: “tell me oh Sant, who kept this treasure here? How did you see it? I am amazed at this. Tell me the whole story.” Guru ji uttered the 2nd Shabad:
Sri Mukhvaak..
They close off their nostrils with their fingers, and claim to see the three worlds.
But they cannot even see what is behind them. What a strange thing this is! ||2||
(SGGS 663)
Sri Prabhoo ji said: “listen Brahmin, don’t lie so much. You didn’t know what was in front or behind you. You say that you know what is happening in the 3 Loks.” The Brahmin said: “I was lying and pretending to do Bhagti. My way is a lie. I do this for the wish of money.” Guru ji said: “listen Brahmin, the ones who have truth in their hearts, they are omniscient. The beloved Bhagats of Hari, they don’t speak anything but know everything. The money of the world is all in the ground. Many have died saving money and burying it. Nobody took money with them to the afterlife. Nobody ate the money either. They couldn’t take it. It stayed buried in the ground. The food you ate, the water your drink, the clothes you wore, the age you spent; that is all you have. Gold and silver can’t be eaten. People bury the money and leave the earth. To make the tasks of the world work, this was the reason for money. Everyone works for money. The Sants and Bhagats that are pure-hearted, they know what is hidden and what is exposed. Where the millions and trillions of monies is, it remained buried in the ground. The Sants, the beloveds of Ram Parmeshwar, they know everything. Ram is in their hearts.” The Brahmin said: “the people of the world love money. They want money. They don’t know who Parmeshwar is. They are trapped in greed and attachment. They don’t follow their own Dharma.” Guru ji heard this and uttered the next Shabad:
The Kshatriyas have abandoned their religion, and have adopted the language of the Malaich..
The whole world has been reduced to the same caste; the state of righteousness and Dharma has been lost. ||3||
(SGGS 663)
“In the time of Kaliyuga, the Dharam is lost. The Kshatriyas and Brahmins do bad deeds. Both of them were the highest but hold the grave sins now. They became impure and let go of their Dharmas. They sell their daughters and eat the money. They earn sin with other women. They don’t read or teach. They speak the language of the Malaich to earn money. They are greedy for money and became unorthodox. Their minds are not focused. They are unjust. They like to slander good people. They speak nonsense during the Katha of Hari.” The Brahmin said: “listen Sant ji, oh Giver of Peace: in Kaliyuga, sin is everywhere. Every man does it without thinking of the infinite and finite. If there is another way other than the Naam, then please tell me. You are omnipotent and the Giver of Mukti.” Sri Guru ji then said:
Sri Mukhvaak..
They analyze the 18 chapters of the Puranas, they study the Vedas,
but without the name of Hari, there is no Mukti; so says Nanak the servant. ||4||1||6||8||
(SGGS 663)
The Brahmin folded his hands and bowed his head. He said: “please give me Mukti, oh Washer of the Sins. You are the complete saint, the Master of the World.” He placed his head on Guru ji’s feet. He renounced the pride of his caste. He focused on the feet of the Guru. He said: “please give me your wisdom. Keep the honour who comes to your shelter.” Guru ji said: “the money that you have acquired with deceit, give it all to the poor. Let go of the corruption and chant the Naam with your pure heart. You will receive Mukti in this way. Chant Vahiguru and use the money you just found (which was enough for the Brahmin’s 7 generation). Let go of your vices. Your sins of the past have been washed away. Don’t do anymore sins now.” Guru ji gave back the Salagrama to the Brahmin and said: “you spoke lies because of the idol.” The Brahmin became a Sikh and was pure. He was happy and wrote many Shabads of Guru ji. In this way, Guru ji blessed the Brahmin and travelled on.
We arrived in a village where the people had bad wisdom. Where Guru ji sat down, the people of the village came laughing. They made us get up and leave. They didn’t let us sit anywhere else in their village. Guru ji said to them: “may you remain settled here.” We then went to another village. Guru ji sat in a nice place. The people of the village noticed that a saint had come. They came and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. They did the Seva of Satguru ji with love. They gave as a nice place to spend the night. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji said: “this village will fall apart. The people of this village will go on to settle in different places. The village will be destroyed.” Bhai Mardana ji heard this and fell in doubt. He said: “where we weren’t allowed to sit, you blessed them to remain settled there; where you were served well, you cursed them with their village being destroyed. This is really unorthodox. I don’t understand this.” Guru ji said: “if the people of this village go on to settle in other places, they will spread their good wisdom to other people around the world. The Dharma will grow in this way. The people of the previous village, wherever they go, they will teach bad things and do bad deeds. They are corrupt themselves and will corrupt others. They are uprooting their peace in the afterlife. They are engrossed in greed and desires. They lie, day and night. They don’t serve saints, poor people or guests. They spend their day and night in vices and pleasures. They will be in pain in their end time.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “if it be your wish, then you can give them Mukti too.” Many people that were sitting there, Sri Guru ji uttered a Shabad in Raag Malaar:
Raag Malaar Chaupaday Mahalla 1 Ghar 1
Ik Oankaar Satnam Karta Purakh Nirbhao Nirvair Akaal Moorat Ajooni Saibhang Gurprasaad..
Eating, drinking, laughing and sleeping; the mortal has forgotten death. Forgetting the Lord and Master, the mortal is ruined. Such a life is cursed. Life cannot remain forever. ||1||
O mortal, meditate on the One Naam. You shall go to your true home with honor. ||1||Rahao||
Those who serve You – what can they give You? They beg for things and receive what cannot remain. You are the Great Giver of all Jeevs; You are the Life within all living beings. ||2||
The Gurmukhs meditate on you, and receive the Amrit; they become pure like this. Day and night, chant the Naam, O mortal. It makes the filthy, pure. ||3||
As is the season, such is the comfort of the body given, and so the body becomes like the season. O Nanak, that season is beautiful; without the Name, what good is the season? ||4||1||
(SGGS 1254)
The people heard the Shabad and became the Sikhs of the Satguru. They did the Simran of Vahiguru and destroyed the vices from their hearts. Prabhoo ji then took leave and went to a new place. He dispelled hypocrisies, destroyed the problems and made his servants happy. He was the Pranas of his servants.
2-23 The Dukhi Shah of Satgarrah
The ocean of joy, Guru ji, who is virtuous; he is known in the world. I bow to his lotus feet and say the beautiful Katha.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Listen Guru Angad Dev ji to the beautiful Katha. We travelled onwards. We came to a place called Satgarrah. The Compassionate One arrived and went to the market. He sat down in front of a warehouse. A rich Shah lived there who had many employees. His attention was always in the tasks of the world. He never thought of the Naam. He spent the whole day doing business. He was stuck in his business and never forgot about it. When it was almost evening, Bhai Mardana ji had been looking at the Shah for a long time. He said: “this Shah is very happy. He is spending his days in joy. He sat there all day long and did nothing. Since you came here, he didn’t even look at us. I don’t think he thinks of charity. He seems to be Bemukh from saints. He has probably never done the Seva of anyone nor has he done Prema Bhagti. He seems happy though.” Guru ji heard this and said: “the way of sins only gives pain. Only the Gyaani is happy. Without the sun, the day has never come. Without Gyaan, nobody is happy. If you have doubt in your heart, go and ask the Shah.” Bhai Mardana ji heard this and went to the Shah. He said to him: “I see you as being very happy. What good deeds did you do? You don’t even know if it’s day or night. You are engrossed in your happiness.” Seeing the person as a Fakir, the Shah spoke about his pain: “there is nobody unhappier than I am in this world. My pains cannot be spoken about. How can I tell you?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “don’t worry, this is the Complete Saint. He can dispel your sorrows.”
The Shah came to Guru Nanak Dev ji and sat down. He said: “listen Sant, you are the Giver of Peace. I was married and my wife loved me a lot. I loved her a lot as well. We were always with each other day and night. I did not let her away from my sight. There was a time where my wife fell sick. She became weak and was about to die. I was depressed. I gave a lot of donations. I did a lot of Poojas and Yagnas. I was really upset. I sat by her bedside, crying. She gave me hope: “why are you crying for me? You are really rich. When I die, you can re-marry. You can make love to another woman. You can spend your time in joy. You won’t even think about me again.” I heard this and said: “Listen my beloved, don’t say that. I won’t love anyone ever again. If you are alive only then will I be happy. Otherwise I won’t live. You are more loving to me than my own life. I won’t marry again.” My wife said: “oh husband, you may be speaking the truth but I don’t think it will be true once I die. You are speaking in love but in your heart, it is the other way.” When I heard her doubt, I couldn’t tolerate the pain. I took a sharp knife and cut my Ling off. I said to her: “do you believe me now? You didn’t believe me or my love.” I fainted from the pain. The doctors saved me. After many days, my wife was cured. I was in pain. When she was well, Kamadeva begin to entice her. After some days, she said to me: “I can’t stay without making love.” I was embarrassed and didn’t say anything. I regretted my actions. I acted too hastily. Now she goes to bed with other men. She calls to her whoever she wishes to. She has stained the honour of the family. She has been with many men. I have to watch this sin with my own eyes. My mind burns. I am worried day and night. I feel like there is nobody unhappier than me. I have no solution for this. I am embarrassed from others.” Sri Prabhoo ji heard this and said: “the actions of your previous births are coming to fruition now. It’s your own Karma. You reap what you sow. If you do good deeds, you receive joy. Bad deeds give pain. From Brahma to insects, all life forms receive the results of their Karma. They experience the pain and joy from their Karma. The Gyaani humans in the world who see the body as perishable and know that it won’t last forever. Pain and pleasure are perishable as well. They are never attached to them. They are always in bliss, in the single state of mind. They are never happy nor sad. The Jagyaso people do the Bhagti of the indestructible one. They know that the pain and pleasure are given by Kartaar. They see Parmeshwar as their friend. He will only do good for them. When they are faced with troubles, they see it as good for them. The sins they have done are being erased by the pain. They see this and become happy. Just as a doctor comes to an ill person and gives a bitter medicine, the patient eats the bitter medicines happily. They know that the illness will be gone. Their Karma gets cut then who are coloured in Parmeshwar’s Bhagti. When pain comes, their bad karma is erased. In times of joy, good Karma is being erased. In the previous lives, the Karma we have done, they should be experienced. They can’t be erased without being experienced. The Satsangi thinks about this: joy and pain are the same. They stay the same and see the Kartar as their friend. He will always do good. The Agyaani people, when faced with pain, they get deeper in attachment. They have to experience the pain. They cry but still have to experience the pain. The pain of the body is there, secondly, they feel pain in the mind.” Guru ji said this and then uttered a Salok:
Salok Mahalla 1..
Inder was given a thousand —- and cried (after deceiving Gautam and Ahilya).. Parshuram came home crying (after fighting Ram Chander)..
Ajai cried after giving a donation (after giving dung as donations and having to eat it).. such is the punishment from the court..
Ram cried after being exiled.. Seeta and Lakshman were separated from him..
The ten-headed (Ravan) cried after losing the Lanka.. Who kidnapped Seeta after playing the Nagara (disguised as a Jogi)..
The Pandavas cried after being slaves/workers.. Their Master was always with them..
Janmeja cried, forget his way (forgetting Vyaas’s words)..For one mistake he became a sinner..
Sheikhs, Workers and Peers cry.. In the end time, they fear the Jumms..
The Kings cry who pierced their ears.. They begged from other homes.
The poor cry as well as the collectors of money.. The Pandits cry, losing their Gyaan..
Baali cried, along with his wife.. Nanak Says, this whole world is in pain..
The one who believe in the Naam, they win and leave.. Other Karmas aren’t accounted for..1..

Bhai Mardana ji heard this and said: “tell me the meanings of this Shabad.” Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji spoke of the meanings. He spoke of the great histories: “the one who does 100 Asmedh Yagnas, that person becomes the king of Heaven, Inder. Sachi becomes his wife. She is very beautiful, even prettier than Rati. Her face is bright like the full moon. Her eyes are like lotus petals. Whomever she looks at, Kamadeva’s arrows pierce that person. The Apsaras are very beautiful as well, they are commanded by Inder. There was a time when Inder saw the wife of a Rishi and lost his senses. Her name was Ahilya, who was the wife of Gautam. Ahilya’s body was bright like gold, or a Deeva. Inder burnt on that Deeva like a moth. The lion of lust roared and Inder’s patience ran like a deer. Ahilya was beautiful. Inder saw her. Brahma made Ahilya in his best time. Devatas and humans were attracted to her. Jogis would forget their Jog, seeing Ahilya. Inder was tied in the rope of Ahilya’s love. He tried of a plan to be with Ahilya but couldn’t succeed. He kept thinking about it. He called Chander, his friend, and took him to Gautam’s in the middle of the night. They played a trick. Chander became a rooster and crowed before time. Gautam thought it was morning and got up to take a bath. Gautam came to the river and felt something was off. Inder disguised himself and came into the home. He changed into Gautam’s form and relieved his intoxication of lust with Ahilya. When Gautam was about to bathe, Ganga spoke and made him aware of what was going on. Gautam ran back to his home. When Gautam saw Inder, he cursed him in anger. He said: “you came here because of one Vagina and didn’t even fear the wrath of the Rishis. You will have 1,000 Vaginas on your body.” Inder’s beautiful body became ugly, with tiny invaginations all over his body that smelled back. He didn’t go back home out of embarrassment. He was ugly. He got what he deserved. He couldn’t go back to Heaven. He let go of Heaven and his army. He went into a big pond with many lotus flowers. He hid within the lotus and cried out of embarrassment. He had 1,000 Vaginas.
I will tell you about Parshuram now. There was a King named Sahisarbaahu (also known as Arjun). He had won the whole earth with his strength. There was a Rishi during that time, named Jamdaghani. Sahisarbaahu went to the Ashram of Jamdaghani with his army of 20,000 men. The Rishi made arrangements by calling the Kamdhenu cow. The cow gave him anything he asked for. Everyone was able to eat what they wanted to. The king saw the cow and wanted to take it. The Rishi understood the king’s corrupt desire. He made the cow fly toward Heaven. (Sahisarbaahu shot an arrow which hit the cow in the hoof, ripping it, giving it its current form. The blood from the cow that fell to the earth gave rise to the tobacco plant) The king got angry and killed the Rishi. The Rishi’s wife, Renuka, saw her dead husband and began to yell in grief. She slapped her body 21 times (7 slaps to her face, 7 slaps to her chest and 7 slaps on her thighs) while calling out to her son, Parshuram. Parshuram was doing Tapp at that time. He opened his eyes and quickly came to his mother. He saw his father’s dead body and was surprised. He spoke in anger: “listen Mata, you slapped yourself 21 times and gave yourself pain. See me determination as true! I will not leave any Kshatriya alive. I will clean the earth from Kshatriyas, 21 times. I will wage war with my full strength.” He said this and picked up an axe. He became the form of Bir Rass. He received weapons from Shiva and faced Arjan Sahisarbaahu. They both fought each other fiercely. The shields clashed. Parshuram used his axe to kill many. He fought in anger and cut Sahisarbaahu’s 1,000 arms. He decapitated his head and killed him. He killed every Kshatriya on earth. He found the clans of Kshatriyas and killed them. He gave the kingdoms to the Brahmins. He then went to the jungles to do his Tapp. He killed the sinners and sat down. After a while, the unborn children (during the war) were born and grew in numbers. They took the kingdom back from the Brahmins. They fought the Brahmins. Parshuram came back and killed the Kshatriyas. He gave back the kingdom to the Brahmins. The Kshatriyas grew again and took the kingdom back. Parshuram came back again. This happened 21 times. He kept giving the kingdom to the Brahmins. There was a time he fought the Raghupat, Sri Ram. Parshuram could not handle his radiance. He was embarrassed and came back home. He cried because he lost his powers. He saw Brahmins begging in the world. Raja Ajj had to eat his own donation. Only Gyaan gives joy in the world. Otherwise, everyone is in pain.
Sita and Lakshman were separated from Sri Ram ji. Sri Ram ji cried because of this. He was the Avatar of Vishnu, whose name is chanted by the whole world. The 3 Loks were in the command of Ravan. He had tied Kaal (death) to the leg of his bed. His country was made of gold. He had many women in his home. He kidnapped the daughter of Janak, Sita. Ram Chander ji killed him. Ravan fell in battle and cried. Such was the king of the Golden Lanka, Ravan. There was no one left to put water in his mouth. He had 100,000 sons and 125,000 grandsons. Many capable and strong warriors came into this world. Without Gyaan, they all suffered great pain. They will leave this earth without delay.”
2-24 The Prasang of The Pandavas
You are the destroy of the ego of Mahikhasur; the giver of joy to Inder. Jagdamba, you are victorious, holding the slanted Chakar in your hand.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
“Listen to the story of the Pandavas who had the company of Krishan ji, the Home of Virtues. The Pandavas had won every direction at one time. They performed the Rajsooya Yagna. Many items came to their home. The kings from every direction bowed to the feet of the Pandavas.
There was a time the Pandavas went to Duryodhana. They went to his court and gambled. On the first play, the Pandavas bet their money. They then lost their money, horses, elephants and chariots. They then lost their villages and rule. They lost the cities, villages and the whole country. They continued playing and ended up getting exiled to the jungles. They had also lost Dropati on a play. The foolish ones that won, they laughed and were happy in their hearts. Dropati was in her room as she was on her monthly period. She was dragged to the court by her hair. Nobody stopped this. They made her stand and Duryodhana said: “take her clothes off.” When they attempted to take her clothes off, they pulled on her Saari. She remembered Sri Krishan and so her Saari did not finish. They couldn’t know where the end of the Saari was. They couldn’t tell if the woman was made of the Saari. Piles of the Saari piled up in the court. There was cloth everywhere. You couldn’t see across the court. The Master kept the honour of his Bhagat, Dropati. She was a great Bhagat. The Pandavas then went to the jungle and suffered the pains of jungle life. They spent 12 years in the jungle. The 13th years were spent in hiding in the kingdom of Madhra Desh, ruled by Raja Viraat. The 5 brothers went to Viraat. Yudhister became a coach of Chauper for the king. He called himself “Kank.” Bheem became “Bhallab,” the cook. He cooked food in the royal kitchen. They hid all of their weapons before going into the palace. The strong Arjan became a Hijra and taught the Princess Uttara how to dance Nrit. Nakul became a stable boy in the stables. Sehdev tended the royal cows. Nobody was able to identify them. Dropati disguised as a maid named “Sayandari.” She served the queen of Madhra. Dropati was very beautiful. Her hair was like many black snakes, hanging. Her eyebrows were like Kamadeva’s bows. Her face was radiant like the full moon. Her teeth were like crystals. Her stomach was thin and had 3 lines on it. Rati would see Dropati and find her pretty. Her sight was like arrows of Kamadeva. Her breasts were like the Nagaras of Kamadeva which were put upside down after winning the world. Her voice was like the sound of the cuckoos; her face was like the flame. She walked like an elephant. Her eyes were like that of a fawn’s eyes. Her navel was deep, like a whirlpool in the Jamuna. The diamonds were put to shame in front of her nails. Her neck was long, as though the flame of fire wanting to rise up. There was a bindi in her chin which looked like Rahu in the moon. She used to have many maids, who served her and looked at her face; she was now the maid of the queen of Madhra. She hid her beauty and served the queen. She had said to everyone: “5 great beings are my protectors. If anyone looks at me with foul intentions, my protectors will kill them.” Everyone heard this. She served the queen.
After a few days, everyone worked as disguised people. The queen had a brother named Kreechak. He was really strong. He casually came to his sister once and saw Dropati. He was enticed by her. He had the strength of 10,000 elephants. He was intoxicated in pride. He had no common sense. He saw Dropati’s eyes. Kreechak was injured by Kamadeva. He was drowning in the ocean of lust. How could he find the shore of Bibek? He was suffering, like an injured person. Aroused by lust, he said: “oh maid, I like you. Come and meet me. Make love to me. Seeing you, I am struck by Kamadeva. Come to me.” Dropati heard this and said: “my protectors are great and strong beings. If you look at me with lust, you will be killed.” Kreechak did not take the threat seriously, being aroused by lust. He ran to catch Dropati. Dropati ran in fear, like the moon runs to Inder, being chased by Rahu. Where Viraat’s court was in session, Dropati came there screaming for help. Yudhister, Bheem, Nakul and Sehdev were sitting and serving the King. Dropati was upset. She went to the king and called out to him. Kreechak chased her and everyone watched but couldn’t do anything. They couldn’t relieve her pain. Kreechak grabbed Dropati’s hand in the court. Seeing him as really strong, the king didn’t stop him. As an elephant pulling a vine, Kreechak pulled Dropti and kicked her in the back. Bheem saw this and was really angry. He couldn’t go anything. His eyes and face were red. Yudhister had stopped him by signaling him with anger. They were afraid of being recognized. Nobody said anything. The strong husbands sat near the king while Kreechak took Dropati to his home. The Pandavas cried while sitting in the court. What was supposed to happen, couldn’t be stopped. They were in pain. There is no joy without Gyaan.”
Satguru ji said only this much. I will complete the history. Listen oh saints to the history. The upset Dropati said to the king: “you are damned oh king! You have no Dharam! Your whole court is damned. They saw the sin. Your wisdom is crocked. You are corrupt. You are damned that you couldn’t stop Kreechak. The people in your court are damned as well. Your strength is gone.” She spoke like this and Kreechak dragged Dropati to his room. Dropati lost hope and played a trick to be released. As she was dragged, Dropati said: “when it will be night time, I will come and meet you. It’s daytime. Let me go. Tell me where you want me to meet you.” Kreechak heard this and became happy. He laughed and said: “at night the Chatsala (school) is empty. Meet me there. If you don’t come at night, I will catch you in the morning. Nobody will be able to stop me.” Dropati was released like a doe from a lion.
Kreechak went home. Dropati’s hair was a mess and her face was drooping like the moon surrounded by the darkness. Her lips were dry and her body was tired. Her clothes were dirty. Viraat got up from his court when it was dark. The Pandavas were upset and got up as well. They came to the place of eating. Bheem was sitting there, in regret. Dropati came there at night. She hugged Bheem and cried. It was like a vine against the Tar tree. She cried to wash the stains of her pain. She couldn’t speak. Her throat swelled up. She was very scared. She gathered her courage and said: “you are my 5 husbands. You are my protectors. You are great warriors and really strong. You shoot the bow and arrow. Kreechak is trying to rape me. He wants to meet me in the Chatsala. If I don’t go to him tonight, he will take me in the morning to his home.” She took deep and cold breaths. Her eyes couldn’t stop shedding tears. She was really worried. She drowned in the river of worry, trying to find the shore. Bheem said to her: “I will go in your place.” He gave her hope and went to relieve her worry. He said: “tell me everything of where I should go.” Dropati said to her husband, Bheem: “he called me to the school, Chatsala.” She told him and came back to her room.
Bheem ate his food and went to kill Kreechak. Listen to Kreechak’s state: he was impatient. He wondered when he was going to touch Dropati’s body: “when will the day end?” He was suffering from lust. “When will she come and give me joy?” He wasn’t calm. He walked around all day, waiting. He was burning from separation. He lost his wisdom. When it was evening, he jumped up. The teachers and the students left the school and went home. Kreechak laid down on a white bed. He put perfume on his body. He sat and waited, looking outside. He put a flower garland around his neck. He wore jewellery. He wondered why Dropati was taking so long. He looked towards the door. It was dark.
When Bheem came to the Chatsala, Kreechak heard a noise. He thought Dropati had come. He was happy and jumped for joy: “now I will make love! I will do as I please.” When he came close, he extended his hand forward. Bheem grabbed Kreechak’s hand. Kreechak couldn’t release his hand. He got up and Bheem put him in a bear hug. He realised that it was a warrior. Kreechak started to fight. They both boxed each other. It was like hammers hitting an anvil. They were both strong. It was like fighting a crocodile; two elephants or lions fighting. Both were angry. There was no end to the fight. They slapped each other. They fought with pride. They kicked and yelled at each other. Both fought in the dark and twisted each other’s arms. They fought for 3 hours. Bheem tripped Kreechak and threw him down. He got on top of Kreechak and stabbed is knees into him. Bheem punched Kreechak’s chest. He was really hurt and fell like a tree being uprooted. Bheem got on top of Kreechak’s chest and twisted both his arms. Both of the arms broke. He ripped Kreechak’s chest and twisted his neck. He rested the head on the chest. He broke the feet and the arm. He left them on his belly. He made him round like clay on a potter’s wheel. He stabbed him with a pole. When it was 2 hours till morning, Bheem went back to his place. He was really tired and fell asleep right away. Nobody knew what had happened to Kreechak.
In the morning, everyone woke up and noticed that Kreechak wasn’t in his home. Everyone was shocked. They started to look for him. The news spread in the whole city. Kreechak was nowhere to be found. Somebody came to the Chatsala school and saw Kreechak’s body wrapped up in a round form. They saw his face, which was broken and put into the belly. There couldn’t see the arms or the legs. Everyone was shocked to see him dead: “he had the strength of 10,000 elephants. Who killed him? He hasn’t been stabbed. The maid of the queen said that she had great beings who protected her. They must have seen her disrespect and killed Kreechak. If he would have fought, he would have been injured with a weapon.” The people talked and made up their own theories. Kreechak and 100 brothers. They all cried for their brother. The women took off their jewellery and beat their heads. The news spread in the city. High and low, they all heard and came to see him. Kreechak’s sister was shocked. She cried while praising her brother’s virtues. Raja Viraat cried, seeing Kreechak’s body. Men and women gathered. Kreechak’s brothers were corrupted. They said to each other: “this pretty woman is the reason our brother is dead. We will cremate her too.” They went to Dropati and grabbed her. They made a pyre in the city. Many people were there. They took Kreechak and Dropati, not knowing who would protect her, and went towards the pyres. Many people walked with them. Dropati’s body shined in her clothes, like a flame in glass. Her hair was beautiful. It was like the Jumana flowing from the Sumer Mountain. People talked: “she was innocent. They should leave her.” Nobody listened. Everyone was mourning Kreechak’s death. Many men and women cried. Dropati was in pain, being carried to the pyre. She was anxious, being held by many hands. She didn’t see anyone to protect her. She cried. Tears fell from her eyes. It was like fish coming out. Her lips were dried. Her hair was a mess. She didn’t have any senses to take care of her hair.
They all passed where Bheem’s quarters were. Bheem heard the noise and got up from his sleep. He saw Panchali being anxious. He got anxious. Dropati’s lotus face was depressed. Bheem saw Dropati and signaled her that he will come to save her. Dropati had hope. It was like a drowning person getting a hand. Everyone came to where the pyre was made. Many people were there. Bheem disguised himself and jumped his wall. He came to the ruins and uprooted a dry tree with his hand. He was angry and came to the pyres. He made a scary form to kill the brothers of Kreechak and to save his wife. He saw his wife. Dropati yelled out: “the great being who protect me, one of them has come. Look at him. Run away and leave me. Otherwise you will all die, right here.” They all heard this and looked towards Bheem. They saw a scary form and ran away. Nobody wanted to stay. They ran away, trying to save their lives. Bheem was really angry. He ran after the brother’s of Kreechak. He stopped them. The brothers and some warriors came to fight Bheem. They struck with their weapons and yelled: “kill him!” Bheem’s eyes were red with anger. He took the tree in his hand and killed the 100 brothers. All of them died. Some warriors died as well. Bheem then went back to the ruins and changed out of his disguise. To avenge Kreechak’s death, the 100 brothers went to burn Dropati but died. This is the whole history. One bad deed resulted in a lot of dead people. Listen to this Katha with eagerness. The one who were really powerful, in every way, they left this earth. No one stayed. The ones who had Gyaan in their heart, they were always in bliss, never in pain.
2-25 Dukhi Shah/ The Leper Fakir
In the hearts which have Brahm Gyaan, they know their true form. I bow to their feet and say the beautiful Katha.
Sri Bala Sandhru Vaach..
Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, listen to the next Prasang. Guru Nanak Dev ji continued: “listen to Janmayja’s story, how he was in pain after knowing everything. One day, Ved Vyaas ji sat with King Janmayja. He told the king the painful history of his ancestors. Janmayja inquired about them: “Yudhistir gambled and spent a lot of time in pain, nobody stopped him. He was good in his Dharma but he did a bad act. His personality was good and always spoke the truth. How did his wisdom become so?” Vyaas ji said: “listen, what Ishwar has destined, that will surely happen. Somebody can make millions of attempts and be really wise; what is destined to happen cannot be stopped. It will happen.” Janmayja said: “listen oh king of Munnis, tell me what will happen in my future. How can I let something happen that is destined? If someone doesn’t know, destiny may unfold.” Vyaas ji said: “I will tell you your future. A horse will come to your home. You will buy the horse and keep it in your stables. You will ride it one day to go hunting. You will go towards the south and get really tired. You will set up your camp on the shores of a pond. You will sleep all alone. Another horse will come out of the pond and mate with your mare horse. The mare will become pregnant and give birth to a horse. The horse will have black ears. You will consult your ministers and decide to do a Yagna with the horse. Many Brahmins will come to your home for the Bhojan. There will be a problem there. You will sin gravely as you will kill Brahmins. You will be in pain and become a leper. You will come to me to listen to the Katha of the Mahabharat. I will tell you not to doubt the Katha of the Mahabharat, which will make the Leprosy go away. I am telling you now that you will doubt it. The pain will then kill you when you doubt. I have told you everything. You know what is going to happen to you. You can do what you want to. You can stay alert.” The king heard this and was amazed. He stopped buying horses. He stopped the root of the problem for his future. He thought: “how can the effect be there without the cause? If one does not plant a seed, how can there be thorns that give you pain then?” He held on to this determination for a while. He spent some time like this. When a horse would die in his army, he wouldn’t replace it. There was soon a shortage of horses. His ministers folded their hands and said: “oh king, this won’t work. You have a stubborn determination. How can there be an army without horses? It’s like a lioness without paws and claws. You need to buy horses for the army. You don’t need to ride them. Many Saudagars come to sell you horses, hearing your praises. They leave with sorrow. They aren’t happy and say bad things about you.” Hearing the words of the ministers, he thought to himself: “they are right. A king like me should buy horses. How will the Saudagars make a living? I won’t ride the horses. I will buy them.” He thought of buying horses. He only bought steeds. He bought many steeds.
One day a Saudagar came to the king. He had a smart mare and showed it to Janmayja. Many soldiers saw the mare and recognized it as good. They said to the king: “this mare should only be with you. Buy it and keep it with you. It will give birth to many good horses. The offspring will be good. You would look good riding the offspring. You don’t need to ride mares.” Hearing the officers, the king bought the mare. He saw the nice mare and was impressed. He gave money to the Saudagar and kept the mare at home. It was his death he bought. The mare had good qualities. The stable boy rode the mare to check its walks. The stable boy said: “I have never seen such a mare before. You should ride it, Raja ji. It is very clever and fast.” The Raja heard this and got on top of the horse. He went towards the south to hunt. He then saw a deer and chased it. None of his other soldiers could catch up to him. The Raja was soon alone. He chased the deer and hunted it down. After killing it, he got tired and thirsty. He drank some water from a pond and fell asleep. His horse was tied to a tree. Soon, a horse came out of the pond and mated with the mare. It went back to the pond before the Raja could wake up. When the Raja woke up, he got up and mounted his horse. He came back to his palace. The mare was pregnant and soon gave birth to a horse with black ears. The horse was beautiful and good for a Yagna. Everyone advised Janmayja to do the Asmedh Yagna, which gave good rewards. The Raja forgot the future that Vyaas ji had told him. He prepared for the Yagna and mounted his horse to win many other Rajas. When he came back home, he called many Brahmins for a Bhoj. He had many types of foods made. He was going to give the Brahmins gifts. One of his Queens followed him. Where many Brahmins were eating, the Raja came there. A strong wind blew which removed the covering of the queen. Some of the Brahmins saw the naked body of the queen and laughed out loud. The Raja got angry seeing them laughing. He didn’t think of right or wrong. He grabbed some of the Brahmins and burned them to death. He had many killed in a few seconds. He was now considered a great sinner and contracted leprosy. Vyaas ji came back to the Raja and tried to convince him. He began to tell him the history of Mahabharat. As he listened his leprosy got better. When he came to the Prasang of Bheem throwing elephants towards the skies and never coming back down; still being up in the skies and not coming back to earth; the Raja heard this and did not believe it. There was a little leprosy lesion left on his nose. He squirmed his nose in disagreement and sat without knowing the truth. Vyaas ji used the power of his Mantras and lowered the elephants down to earth. The bones of the elephants came down to the court. Everyone saw the bones of the elephants and were amazed. The leprosy lesion remained on the nose. He cried out in pain which became the reason for his death. His pranas left him and he went to the afterlife. In this world, only Gianis are happy. The rest of the world is in pain. Peers, Sheiks, Masayaks; all fear death and cry.
Gopi Chand and Bharthri; these kings cried after piercing their ears. They left their homes and begged from other homes. People try really hard to earn money; a cheap person losing their money and crying. The Pandits speak Gyaan from their mouths and unwise people don’t value it. During their end, they are under the control of the Jumms. They cry in pain. When a woman’s husband dies, she cries while saying her husband’s praises.” Sri Guru ji said: “listen Mardana, the whole world is in pain. They are stuck in attachment like being stuck in the middle of the ocean. You can’t see the shore. Vahiguru Satnam; the ones who accept this, they win in this world. The other Karmas come under the accounting of Dharmaraja. There is no way to be released from those actions. They have to be played out whether it be good or bad. Make your heart pure and serve the Sri Naam. They won’t have to suffer the accounting of Dharmaraja. Dharmaraja has to rip their papers. They go straight to Sach Khand and nobody stops them.” In this way, Guru ji explained the Shabad.
The Shahukaar placed his head on Guru ji’s feet. He said: “your words are like soap, cleansing my mind like dirty clothes. Come to my beautiful home. Set foot in it and make it pure. My great fortune has come to fruition that you have come to me. You said priceless words to me.” Prabhoo ji heard the words and went to the Shahukaar’s home. Where the beautiful home was, a nice bed was laid out for Guru ji. He had Guru ji sit there with great love. He brought his wife to Guru ji. To give the woman peace, Guru ji said: “even if the husband may be weak, handicapped or a leper; you should see him as the Prabhoo. You should serve him in every way and not love any other man. When the husband dies, some Patibrat women die. She does not value her own body. She is given great joy in heaven. Both husband and wife go to heaven with joy. The woman that leaves her husband and seeks the love of another man; she becomes shameless and leaves the honour of the world; meets other men for pleasure; when the Jumms come, they drag them and punish them. They heat iron pillars and tie the man or woman to it. They give other types of pains. Who would listen to your screams then? The world slanders them. In the afterlife, they face a lot of pain. This is what happens to the characterless woman. The Patibrat woman is praised in the world. They receive many joys in Heaven. Look with a great oversight. Stop doing what you are doing.” The woman heard this and fell to Guru ji’s feet because of the fear of the Jumms. She said: “oh Sant ji, I have sinned. I seek your sanctuary and forgiveness.” Guru ji said: “your sins have been washed away. Don’t commit any more sins. Be obedient towards your husband. Do the Simran of Satnam which will give you joy.” Guru ji gave wisdom to the woman and stayed the night. He gave peace and joy to the couples’ hearts. The Giver of Joy then travelled on.
We soon reached a village ahead. (This may have been Dipaalpur, Pakistan) We arrived and looked for a place to spend the night. The One that created the whole universe was looking for a place to stay. Nobody offered us a place to spend the night. Wherever we sat down, the people made us get up and leave. The people were foolish in that place. Guru ji came out of the village. Within the fields outside the village, lived a Leper Fakir. He was always in pain. His limbs deteriorated and was in pain. He always waited for someone to give him food. The Compassionate One saw him with compassion and decided to go to his hut. The Master of the Universe sat in the hut. The Fakir folded his hands and said: “nobody ever comes close to me. Birds fly away from me. You came to me with compassion.” Guru ji decided to stay the night and sat down. The Leper suffered in pain, all night long. He moaned in pain at night, saying: “hai, hai.” When it was midnight, Sri Guru ji sang a Shabad to destroy the Fakir’s pains:
Dhanasri Mahalla 1..
My heart burns, over and over again. Burning and burning, it is ruined, and it falls into evil.
That body, which forgets the Word of the Guru’s Bani, cries out in pain, like a chronic patient. ||1||
To speak too much is useless. Even without speaking, He knows everything. ||1||Rahao||
He created ears, eyes and nose. He gave us a tongue to speak so fluently.
He preserved the mind in the fire of the womb; the instrument of the body blows within. ||2||
These worldly attachments, loves and pleasurable tastes, all are just black stains.
One who departs, with these black stains of sin on his face, shall find no place to sit in the Court of the Lord. ||3||
By your grace, we chant Your Name. Becoming attached to it, one is saved; there is no other way.
Even if one is drowning, still, he may be saved. O Nanak, the True Lord is the Giver of all. ||4||3||5||
(SGGS 661)
Sri Guru ji sang the whole Shabad and went quiet. The Leper Fakir heard the whole Shabad. The leper’s body was cured right away. The sorrows and pains within his mind were all gone as well. His body became pure. His mind became pure. When morning came, he took the Pahul of Guru ji’s feet. A new Prema Bhagti arose in the Fakir’s heart. The news spread in the village. The people saw what had happened and came to see Guru ji. They did the Darshan of Guru ji and brought gifts. They felt embarrassed for making Guru ji leave the village and said: “oh saint, please forgive our mistake. Please make us your servants. Your Darshan is great and generous.” Guru ji heard this and blessed everyone. They were all given the Pahul along with the wisdom of the Satnam chant. Guru ji told them to do Satsangat and then travelled on. The Kavi is a sacrifice to his feet.
