6-6 The Paharis Make Requests to the Soobas
Bheem Chand folded his hands and said everything to Nauranga: “you are our master. You always will be. Take care of us. He sits on the Ghaddi of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji and commands as though he is Inder. Save us from him; otherwise he will ruin our Doons. He has made our kingdoms useless. He has no other task other than looting and beating. We have fought him many times and lost. We are helpless and that’s why we have come here. We want you to send a really big army with us. Send canons and swivel canons. Send a lot. Nothing will be accomplished with little. The Guru won’t be afraid of this. Arrest him or kill him in battle. Only then can your tasks be accomplished.” Nauranga heard this and was shocked. He then thought about what to do: “he won’t be defeated with little army. He always wishes to fight or die. Painda Khan was killed with one arrow. Wajid Khan ran away as well after fighting. Said Beg and Saida Khan became his Mureeds. They accepted the Guru as their Peer. An army of 125,000 ran back. They were looted as they came back. I hope he doesn’t cause a storm that comes all the way to Delhi. The whole country that follows me will follow him then. If I send my ambassadors, it’s possible that he may not come to see me. Thousands join his Panth everyday. They wield weapons and kill in the battlefield.” Nauranga got really angry and said: “the big army that is in Delhi, send them with the Pahari Rajas and attack Anandpur. The Sooba Sirhind should join them as well. Tell them to march upon the Satguru. The army in Lahore, Soobadaar Zabardast Khan should take it and attack the Guru. They should all attack together.” When Aurangzeb gave these commands, the Hukamnamas were all sent out. Bheem Chand was really happy to hear this. He stood with his hands folded and said: “when this great army marches upon the Guru, we will gather armies from our villages to join in. We will fight once with a great blow to kick the Guru out of our land. If you didn’t take on this task, the Guru would have kept fighting us for a long time. He would have fought and made his army bigger. He eventually would have attacked you. For this reason, you thought about this: the enemy is small still and should be killed now.” Chavgatta’s heart burned after hearing this. He was proud of his kingdom. He was intoxicated with power. When he heard of Painda Khan’s death, Deena Beg injured in the battle, the chaos in his land, he has killed thousands and made thousands of servants; he commanded: “go now, Pahari Rajas, and attack! Take the biggest army you can. Unite and fight the Guru together. Meet the other Pahari Rajas. Collect your power and fight the enemy. Take all of the army in Delhi and attack the Guru. Capture him and bring him to me.” In this way, the letters were sent. The messengers rode out to take the letters. Bheem Chand was given a Siropa. He was given leave.
Bheem Chand and Handooria went back to Delhi. They were really happy. They set up camp and met the Delhi Sooba. They gave him money and told him of their meeting with the Shah. They told him everything: “the Emperor has sent out commands. He wants us to gather the army of the Paharis. Tell your brothers and relatives with requests to join in. The Sooba Sirhind is to come along with Sooba Lahore. The armies of all these lands should attack as well. We can then kick out the Guru from Anandpur. If few armies go, he will kill us with the bullets. He is determined to stay in Anandpur. He will stay there and keep hatred in his mind. Fear doesn’t come to him in his dreams. He can be compared to a lion. Little enemies are nothing to him. He comes in front and fights with swords, killing them. We need to send a huge army for him. We will take many and arrest him. We can arrest him or kill him.” The Sooba heard the Pahari Rajas and asked them about this: “from which caste are his warriors from, whom you fear so much? How many soldiers do they have? How many can fight? Which weapon does the Guru use? How does he kill many men? How are his forts? Which land does he rule? Tell me about his rule? Why do you see him as powerful?” Bheem Chand heard this and folded his hands. He spoke of his side (concealing the truth about Bheem Chand actually starting the conflict over the Parshaadi Haathi and Kabuli Tent): “the Guru was born in Patna City. He came here from the East, seeing this place as his own land. His father owned the land. He was a child before and his power couldn’t be seen. His father was calm and peaceful. Many Sikhs followed and worshipped him. We thought that he was like his father. They lived in Anandpur with humility. The Sangat came in many numbers from all the different castes. They brought him many gifts. He spent many years like this. As he grew up, he started to become our enemy. He loved Shaster Vidya. We kicked him out of Anandpur once. He then came to live near the Jamuna. He caused problems with us there. A great battle was fought. He fought with Fateh Shah. He killed the Khans of Daamala. After a few years, he came back to Anandpur and re-established it. He started to worship the Devi and let other tasks go. When he made the Jagdamba appear, he did a huge task: he gave the Pahul of Khanda to many people. He made them great. He said: “I have created the Khalsa which is independent of Hindus and Turks.” He gave them weapons and told them to kill and die. He told them: “hate the Turks. Conquer Delhi and the other lands.” Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shoodras; he made them all sit together and eat. He denounced our traditions of the past. He made them keep their hair and wear a Kachera with love. He once called us to him. Many Pahari Rajas went to him. He said to us: “become the Khalsa and you will get the kingdoms of all the lands; foreign and here. Chavgatha and the other kings, they will all give you taxes if you listen to me. Fight battles with Aurangzeb. The Chattars of the kingdoms will be over your heads. The Master of Delhi killed my father. I wish to avenge his death. With a great force, we will take his force away.” This was the intention of the Satguru. We got scared hearing the Badshah’s name. We got up and came back to our homes. After we left, he made Sikhs out of all 4 Varnas. They want to make the enmity grow. They wish to fight or be killed with anger. For this reason, you should understand this properly: he has these types of warriors who are ready to kill or be killed by saying this. They don’t care about numbers. Their Panth grows by the day. I told you everything now. Our conflict is small. They are actually looking to fight Delhi and all of you. They cause problems everyday in the land. They loot and beat. They don’t let anyone live. He said to us: “why do you not fight the Shah?” We said: “no. We have no reason to.” For this reason, he started a fight with us. He doesn’t let us live in peace. He and his people ruin our fields and villages. We need your help. We came to your shelter for protection. Make the Guru run away from Anandpur. All of the problems will go away.”
6-7 The Paharis and the Soobas get Ready
“He has no kingdom of any land. He has no big fort either. Sometimes his army of Singhs is big and sometimes they go home, taking holidays. The Guru is a Pandit in many Vidyas. He is the best archer. When he releases arrows, he causes chaos. He killed Painda Khan. His arrows cannot be described. He sits on the Ghaddi of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. He is a descendant of Sri Satguru Ramdas ji. His son was Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji. He was a saint, from what we hear. His son was Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. He was the first warrior. He was a great and powerful warrior. He fought with Emperor Shah Jahan. He killed his Umraavs in great battles. His grandson is the brave Guru Gobind Singh ji. His father was Sri Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji. He bought the land where the Guru lives now. He established Anandpur. I have told you everything about him. You can do as you wish now.” The Delhi Sooba heard this from Bheem Chand. He understood everything. He then said: “Raja, take an army. Surround him from 4 directions and wage a battle. Both of the other Soobas will be with you. Lakhs of soldiers will be with you along with their rifles.” Letters were written right away to Sooba Sirhind and Lahore: “take all of your armies and attack the Guru in Anandpur. If the Guru wants to meet, meet him with respect. Bring him to the Emperor. If he doesn’t, take the Pahari Rajas and kill him on the battlefield.” The messengers were all sent with letters: “go without delay.” The Pahari Rajas were happy to hear this. Bheem Chand got ready right away. He said: “I will take care of your armies that you send. I will provide for them. I will help them all.” He did his Salaam and bowed with humility. He took leave from the Sooba.
Bheem Chand had a long way home. He eventually came to Kahloor. He wrote letters to all of the Pahari Rajas. He wrote about what happened in Delhi with him. The messengers took the letters. Big and small Rajas understood what was happening. They all got ready and mobilized their armies. As much money and strength they had, they gathered it all.
The Sangat that was in Inderprast (Delhi), they heard of the army being mobilized. They wrote letters with their Ardaas. They sent news to Guru ji: “Prabhoo ji, you are omnipotent in every way. You are omniscient and know every heart. You already know what is happening. You are the master of every heart. For your Seva and for our good, we write this letter to you. We want to tell you that the Rajas came here and said: “the Guru is oppressing us.” They wrote to Aurangzeb in the Deccan. He read everything and commanded 2 Soobas to send an army to you. They came back to Delhi and they spoke to Sooba Delhi. He obeyed the Shah’s command and commanded the other Soobas: Sirhind and Lahore. Their huge armies will come towards you to fight you. They are coming to you to fight, the Turks. They will come with elephants and horses, hungry for war. We want you to see them well. Make all of your preparations. Make your shields the plates and present it to them. The swords and Khandas should be the utensils. The bullets should be the sugar balls. Present these things well for them. They should all receive these sugar balls. The Chakkars should be Jalebis and the arrows the sweets. The bhoondi should be the sharp arrows. The cannon balls should be the Ladoos. There should be no shortage. The warriors should be the servers to host them with bravery. These people all are coming to you.” The Sikhs wrote this and sent it to Guru ji, secretly.
The messenger came to Anandpur, quickly. He said: “the Sangat of Delhi bows to you.” He then placed the letter in front of Guru ji. Guru ji read the letter and told everyone in the court. Guru ji called the Sangat of Delhi “Dhan.” He then said: “listen Khalsa, this is a big task now. This war will be huge. You will have to fight these great and fierce wars. There is nothing better than this. You will receive the joys of Lok and Parlok. This is the battle of the Deen and Mazhab. Only fortunate ones get this chance. Wave your swords without fear. Fight in front and kill the enemy on the battlefield. You will be praised for this. You will receive the highest status. This status takes many years of Tapp and tolerating of heat and rain. They tolerate cold and stand in water. They face many dangers on their bodies. They denounce the pleasures of the world to live in the jungle. They don’t receive this status that you will receive. The Jogis have tried to receive that status. This status is achieved in the battlefield in the blink of an eye. Whoever fights with desires in their hearts, they will go to heaven, right away. They will get whatever pleasure they wish for. They will get many Apsaras. They will then come to earth and become kings. They will experience all of the joys. Their public will grow. They will earn my Sikhi. They will then come to me and receive bliss. They will become one with me. The ones who fight without desires, they will kill and be killed; they will always be with me. They will receive the rare status which is hard for Jogis to get. There have been Lakhs of Kshatriyas who died and went to Heaven. This is not a hidden Katha. The warriors get all the joys. On top of that, I am always with you. I will be with you in this Lok and in Parlok.” The master said this to the Khalsa. The Khalsa got ready to fight.
It was soon Diwali. The Mela came and the Sangat came from all around. They came for the Darshan from every direction. They brought many gifts and money. There were tents all around Anandpur. There was a great crowd of the Sikh Sangat. Guru ji sat on the high Damdama to give his Darshan. Many came to do his Darshan. Two Chaurs were waived over Guru ji’s head. Many came to see his handsome form. His earrings hung over his face. His eyes were beautiful which could not be described. He casted his divine vision on the Sangat. He looked at all sitting and standing Sikhs. The Sikhs did their Ardaas, standing in front of him. The treasurer took all the gifts to the treasury. Guru ji commanded the Sangat: “whoever has weapons in their hands, stay here to do the Seva of the Guru. If they need a job, they will get paid. The Turks will be attacking. The warriors should wield their weapons. They should stay and take the weapons they need to fight.” The ones that wished to stay, their names were written and their face descriptions were noted. The ones that didn’t have weapons, they were given weapons from the Darbar. The lands nearby, Majha and other places, the Singhs, they came hearing the command of Guru ji. They gathered in Anandpur and stayed with Guru ji. They were with weapons to kill the enemy deer like lions. The Sangat received the Siropas and went home. Only the warriors remained in Anandpur. There was a great crowd of warriors. The goldsmiths made bullets. A lot of gunpowder was prepared. Tomars, sailays were made. Arrows were made and piled. Strong bows were made that fired strong arrows. Pistols were ready. Guru ji gave the weapons to the warriors. The Singhs were happy to receive the weapons. The preparations were made everyday. Kalgidhar ji made preparations. Many Hindus and Turks came to enlist in the army, hearing Guru ji’s praises. They were given salaries in the army. In this way, Anandpur was filled with great warriors.
6-8 The Paharis and Soobas Mobilize
Bheem Chand got angry and wrote to the other Pahari Rajas. He called them all to war. Handooria (Bhoop Chand) came first with his army, all ready for battle. Ghamand Chand of Katoch came with his army. Bir Singh Jaspaali came; Nalagharia came; Kuloo and Kainthal Rajas came; Mandi Raja came; Jammu and Noorpura came; Haripur came; Chambial, Madhuni; they were all eager to come as the Shah’s army was coming. Their eagerness was twice as before. The Raja of Gwalior and Sri Nagar came with huge armies. Raja of Bisihar came with big warriors. Bijarwalia Raja came with his army. Chandewar, Drool, Dhudawalia, Gujjars, Rangars and other thugs came. The army and the regular people also came. They set up camps for miles away. Many mounted and foot soldiers came.
The Delhi army mobilized. They were ready to fight with eagerness. They played their Nagaras. The sound could be heard far away. They had many colours of battle standards. They mapped out their way and eventually reached Sirhind. They set up camp and rested. They stayed with Wajeed Khan Sooba. Everyone met Wajeed Khan and were welcomed. He got ready to fight as well. A lot of gunpowder and bullets were given out. The canons and swivel canons were prepared. The mounted soldiers were gathered. The foot soldiers were mobilized. They were in huge numbers. The battel items were gathered. The army was ready. The next day, the Nagaras were sounded. The horses were saddled. The Sangat in Sirhind heard of what was going on. They wrote letters to Guru Sahib, describing the actions in Sirhind: “Maharaj, oh Raja of Rajas: oh Gareeb Nivaaj, punish the sinners. Bheem Chand Kahiloori, the fool, he has been going around everywhere to fulfill his wishes. He went to the Shah in the Deccan and gathered a huge army. Auranga got angry and sent a huge army. From Delhi, a huge army is coming. They have all set up Dheras in Sirhind. They have gathered the army of Sirhind as well. Canons, swivel cannons and rifles have been gathered. When they fire, they shake the earth. Wajeed Khan is ready to go as well. They all want to battle with you. They will come to you very soon. You should get ready to fight with them. The Turkana is using all their might. They are coming to you soon as this letter is reaching to you.” The letter was sent to Satguru ji.
Guru ji received the letter and read it out loud in the Divaan: “the Turk army is coming this way.” Kalgidhar ji heard this and became angry. He said to everyone in the court: “I will destroy the Turkana! I will destroy their kingdom and radiance in the world. I will make them guilty and kill them. I will take all their power away. Khalsa, pick up your weapons and destroy them! The Hindus and Turks are our enemies!” Prabhoo ji spoke to everyone in this way. At the same time, the letter from Lahore arrived. The Sangat of Lahore sent a letter. The messenger said : “we bow to your feet. Know this, oh Compassionate One.” The Granthi read the letter. The permission was given to read out the letter: “the Sooba of Lahore, Zabardast Khan, he has gathered his army. He is coming towards you to battle you. He is bringing big and small canons. He left today with his army.” The Singhs heard this and became very happy. They felt as though deer were coming to the lions. Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji made all of the preparations. The warriors were given weapons. The Bir Rass awoke in everyone’s heart. They said: “we are very fortunate. We will defeat the enemy and receive joy and praises. Prabhoo ji will give us joy as he wishes. If we leave our bodies for Guru ji; to kill or to be killed on the battlefield, Satguru ji will be with us in Parlok. We will get the highest status.” The Singhs were really happy. Some wore Kesri clothes in joy. Some were blue clothes and some wore red clothes. They were ready to fight in battle. They said: “to live in the world is only 4 days. Why shouldn’t we die today and receive the highest status? The Rajas of Mahabharat fought for the honour of their families. They wished for heaven which they undoubtedly received. Their problems of life and death were erased. The 2 days of pleasures of the world is nothing. You’re going to die in the end anyways. To die on the bed, suffering; it is better to die on the battlefield. There is nothing more fortunate than to die with weapons in hand. On the bed, the throat will swell with mucus. That is painful. One urinates and releases bodily waste on the bed. One is defeated by illness on the bed. You can’t even bathe. Many illnesses cover you for months. The Pranas leave with a lot of pain. The body is undoubtedly destroyed one day. It is better to bravely die on the battlefield. The Pranas leave in the blink of an eye, fighting on the battlefield. The unending bliss is received. Sri Satguru ji’s feet, we become one with. The Mukti is given to the desireless. The ones with desires receive all they wish for. Guru ji has started this Langar: we can fight and receive what we wish for. The person is fortunate by this. What is more fortunate is that we have this Satguru. Our good Karma led us to Amrit. Our minds became drenched with Gurbani. We received this status. Nobody can take it from us. Why wouldn’t we make our lives a success? What point is it to live 10 more days? Nobody would leave such a reward.” In this way, the Singhs spoke amongst themselves. They said: “listen Khalsa, lets do this.” Everyone prepared their weapons. They sharpened their swords. They fastened their weapons. They were eager to fight. The rifles were prepared. The arrows were put in the quivers. The spears were sharpened. The Sailas and chakars were sharpened and worn. The Bichuas, Pesh and Jamdaras were fastened. Pistols were tied in the Kumerkassas. Beautiful shields were fastened on the backs. Many weapons were tied. The soldiers came outside. The bows were tightened. They fired arrows and tested their aims.
Guru ji called for a lot of food; wheat, rice and other foods. It was all kept in the forts: Qila Anandgarh, Qila Lohgarh, Qila Holgarh, Qila Anandgarh, Qila Fatehgarh, Qila Taragarh, Qila Agamgarh. Oil and ghee were kept. Whatever was needed that was kept. The other items of need were collected. Cannabis was gathered of the highest quality and kept. It was all tied up. Opium was gathered and kept. The warriors consumed it and got ready. Other preparations were made. Sri Kalgidhar ji prepared the earth. The Divaans of the Khalsa was carried out. Strategies of battle were said out. Wisdom was given by praising battle: “be praised on earth by fighting. Hindus and Turks have become your enemies today. Destroy them with your weapons in battle. Become fearless and brave. Have patience. Have eagerness in your hearts. Stay on your posts. Don’t leave your posts. Whoever comes close to you, kill them! Tolerate the charge and then fight. They will see you and run away, scared. Fight them all by which they tremble in fear. Get ready for battle. Wait for the army to come.”
Dhan is the Khalsa and Dhan is the true Satguru. They are eager to fight. They are less in numbers. The enemy is in the Lakhs. The warriors of the whole world have come to attack them but the Singhs are still in bliss. They were on attention for battle.
6-9 The Battle Begins
A huge army gathered in Sirhind city. They all mobilized and set forth. Wajeed Khan started off towards Anandpur with anger. There were 450 Nagaras in the army, playing very loud. The battle standards were in the same quantity. Every Misl had their own battle standard and Nagara. The canons were pulled by foot soldiers. They carried their rifles in hand. Many warriors were on horses. The canons were fired. It was like a tsunami in the ocean, headed towards Anandpur. The Nagaras, Pattas and Shehnais were played along with the army. The Ransinghas were played. There was a lot of noise. The dust flew to the sky, covering the sun. The dust looked like black clouds. The weapons shined in the light, looking like lightening. There was a lot of noise: horses galloping and other sounds. You couldn’t hear what you were saying to yourself. It was like a sea travelling in a tidal wave. The warriors travelled on horses. Warriors from many lands were carrying weapons. They all came at the command of the Badshah. It was as though Inder commanded the clouds to all come at the same time. The Turks set up camps on the way for resting during the nights. They passed Ropar after leaving Sirhind. They set up camp ahead of Ropar, facing Sri Anandpur Sahib.
Jabbardast Khan left Lahore with his army. The soldiers were happy to be going to war. Foot soldiers and mounted soldiers were with him. They left quickly. The dust flew upwards. Many types of cannons and guns were with them. They set forth with a huge army. They had 450 Nagaras as well. The sounds echoed in the sky. Dhols, Pattas, Turris, Karnaaees and other instruments played. They all played at the same time. They had 450 battle standards. Their plumes waved in the wind. They were in front of the army. They travelled with a lot of noise. They travelled the whole way and set up camp near the shores of the Sutlej.
Both armies met. There were 900 Nagaras in total. There were 900 flags waving in front. They were coming on to the two sides of Anandpur. They could be seen far into the distance. In the 3rd direction, the Pahari Rajas came, bringing their armies. Bheem Chand saw his army and the other Soobas. He was happy to see this. The Rajas that came with him, he respected them all. He had call them all. Elephants and horses were with them. They all gathered together as they waited for the army of the Turks. When they found out that the armies of the Soobas were coming, Bheem Chand and the Pahari Rajas got ready, right away. All of the Pahari Rajas came with Bheem Chand. Their Nagaras played differently. They came from their mountains.
Jabbardast Khan crossed the river. His army crossed the river along with the army of Sirhind. They met together. The Soobas met each other. They planned their strategies. The elephant and horses started off. The Nagaras sounded. The armies came. The Nagaras were like the sounds of the ocean; the soldiers walking sounded like the sounds of the waves; the rifles were the fish; the swords were the jumms; the canons were like the whales; the mouths of the canons were like the alligators; the shields were like turtles in the ocean; the elephants with their flags were like high mountains; the spears were like snakes; the horses were the scary creatures in the ocean. This was like the drops of water on the hot pan that was going to be boiled to nothing. Guru ji’s anger was the heat. The big Nagaras were played deeply. The sound echoed. The army marched. It was like the clouds coming by the command of the wind. The Badshah commanded them. The sounds of the canons were like the thunder. The flames in the rifles were like lightening. The beautiful city of Anandpur; the army wished to rain upon it with the bullets and canon balls. The Turks came from one side and the Pahari Rajas came from the other side. The army from Delhi came as well. The Pahari Rajas met them all. Their Nagaras sounded like thundering clouds, roaring. The soldiers came in the same way. The reflections of the metal were like lightening, millions upon millions. The canon balls were like hail. Their smoke was like black clouds. There was smoke everywhere. The warriors wanted to charge. The radiance of the army, the sounds of the thundering clouds were only up until the point where Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji fired the stormy winds of his arrows. The Rajas and leaders of thousands of types, with different statuses; all with different names; they were eager to attack seeing the Turks. They had Gujjars, egotistical Rangars and the warriors of the 22 Paharis kingdoms. Many were lay folk ready to fight. Many Syeds, Pathans, Giljas, Mughals, Sheikhs, Kabuli, Kandhaharis, Kirmans, Doud Jais, Rohailas, Afridis; they all brought their horses. They made their horses run fast. They set up camp far away from Anandpur, fearing Guru ji. It was like Jarasandh attacking Sri Krishan Gobind ji. The armies surrounded all 4 directions, like ocean around the fort. Anandpur was like an island in the middle of the ocean.
The Singhs saw the Turks approaching. They had rifles in their hands and wanted to fire them. The Shutri nagaras were played. The Soobas came but there was no fear in the Guru’s heart. Not even a little bit. The Soobas didn’t come close to Anandpur in fear. The Khalsa was in bliss seeing the forthcoming battle. The warriors’ faces were red with joy. They were eager to fight. Their moustaches were up. Their bravery was great and solid. They were looking to the battlefield, eager to fight. They saw Guru ji with them. He was the source of their courage. The cowards, who didn’t have faith in the Guru, were trembling seeing this. Their hearts beat fast. They trembled like death already grabbed them. The warriors wanted to fight. They wanted the army to come quickly. They were proud. They wanted to kill or be killed.
The Turks were like the deer herds in great numbers, far away from lions. They didn’t want to get caught. They were like they wanted to shoo away the lions. The Soobas and Paharis looked for an opportunity to attack. Sri Guru ji commanded the caretaker of the canons: “fire the cannonball to where the gathering of Turks is over there. Don’t let these enemies stand there. Make them feel fear so they go far away.” The canon was ready and fired. The canon was first aimed and the wick was lighted. The flame was spent and fired. There was a loud noise and the cannonball hit the gathering of Turks. The warriors saw this on the both sides. The cannonball came from a distance. It blew through many chests and blew many of them away. The Turks moved back in fear, seeing how far the canons could fire. The Sooba commanded to fire a canon as well. The caretaker of their canon aimed where the Singhs were posted. The canons were ready but the Khalsa aimed their rifles and killed the caretakers of the Turk Canons. There was a lot of noise. The Khalsa began to fight, leaving their laziness. They fought with the faith of Guru ji. They knew that Guru ji was the death of the Malaich. Many warriors died by the hands of the Singhs. They were shot with bullets and fell to the ground, like branches falling off a tree.
The Turks made their horses dance. They came to fire their bullets. The arrows flew, making hissing noises. They flew from both sides. A great fight started. The rifles were fired. The bullets hit as soon as they were fired. The bullets exploded the heads. The Singhs posted in their posts were sitting between walls and had cover, as they were higher in the forts. The Turks had no shelter and nothing to cover themselves with. The Turks were getting killed in great numbers. They were in Lakhs. They were all going to attack together. Their shots were all misses. By the protection of Guru ji, no Singh was hit.
6-10 The Battle Continues
The battle started. The dust flew to the skies. The smoke from the rifles firing covered the sun. It was dark. There was smoke everywhere. There was a lot of shouting. The charges charged, one after the other. The bullets fired. The arrows flew. Many were wounded. The blood drenched the clothes. Some horses lost their rider and were riding empty. The saddles had gems in them. The warriors gathered and charged together. They yelled as they charged. They fired their rifles, pulling the triggers. The faces were busted. The horse flew as they rode. They couldn’t be turned. The warriors came close. The Singhs fired upon the enemy into the heads. The heads exploded. Many fell to the ground like minarets falling. Seeing their fallen comrades, the enemy got scared. They wouldn’t go close to the Khalsa. The warriors got ready and didn’t let the enemy go. The Singhs were angry. They fought like hungry lions for prey. They took their rifles in great anger. The enemy they saw in their reach, they brought them down. A great battle raged on. The blood mixed with the mud. The vultures came. They came and ate the flesh. Many men and horses died. The intestines came out. The legs were broken. Many bullets were fired. The armies faced each other and fought. The charges came. They yelled, coming. Lakhs of Malaich came together. They came in front with ambition. Prabhoo ji saw them and his own warriors. He called his warriors. Bhai Uday Singh ji, the general (the son of Bhai Mani Singh ji), was called. Bhai Daya Singh ji was called by Guru ji playing a Turree. They both came to Guru ji, where on a high place, he was seated. Guru ji saw the battle. The bullets were being fired. The swivel cannons were being fired. Guru ji said: “go quickly and make the Malaich go back. They have come with anger. They can’t be counted. Our Singhs are less in numbers. They have more horses. You should go and I will send the army of Shaheeds behind you. The charge that you do with the Shaheeds, the enemy won’t be able to take it. Both of you go and charge on them. Cause chaos.” Bhai Uday Singh ji and Bhai Daya Singh ji heard this. Guru ji’s words were powerful. They bowed to Guru ji and went forward, where Lakhs of enemy were fighting. They put their chests forwards and charged with other Singhs. The two Bhujhangis charged forward. They held their bows and mounted their arrows. They went on horses to fight. They fought with power. They killed many Malaich. They kept moving forward. They did not move back. They came close to the enemy and waged a great battle.
Jabbardast Khan and Wajeed Khan saw the battle and lost hope. The Paharis looked on as well. A fierce battle raged. They struck their weapons. They fired many bullets. They aimed and pulled the triggers. The Turks charged hard. Bhai Uday Singh ji released arrows with anger. They caused chaos in the enemy lines. Many Singhs came and didn’t move back. They were heavy on the enemy. The Shaheeds came to fight by the command of Guru ji. The wind blew that couldn’t be seen. It was the death of the Turks. Many Turks were killed. Thick Teghas were swung. The weapons were red with blood. Few Singhs were killing Lakhs of Turks. The Shaheeds killed many. They caused chaos. They Turks were surprised. They were dying. But who was it that was killing? The Turks could not tell. Was it the wind? Was it something else. It was the Shaheeds. The Turks fell to the ground. The Singhs didn’t reach where the enemy was already dying. The Shaheeds went forward and killed thousands of Turks. The Turks swung but they were all misses. When the Soobas saw their people die, they couldn’t figure out how they were dying. They said: “how are they dying? We can’t see what is killing them.” No man or horse was spared. The swords swung right through everyone. When the Shaheeds came, Wajeed Khan was shocked. Jabbardast Khan couldn’t understand. He said: “how are many of my men dying.” The Turks had charged with eagerness but many had died. They stopped. They started to move back. The Khands and swords were shining. The warriors were being cut. The Singhs were seen less in numbers but many were dying. “Who is killing us?” They were shocked. The warriors fell and their heads burst. They said to each other: “who is killing us? We can’t run.” They charged on. They saw the weapons cutting. The scene was scary to see. The bodies were piled up. Heads and limbs were seen everywhere. It was chaos. Hands and feet were cut. Blood was flowing. There was a lot of smoke. The bullets kept firing. They killed men and horses. The bullets came screaming, making the warriors scream as they were hit. They killed.
The Kaljognis came to drink blood. Kali danced the Tandav. The Birs came. The Bhoots and Prayts came to dance. Bhairon showed his fierce form. The Joganis ate and belched. The vultures shrieked. The crows came to eat the flesh. The Turks came with ambition and charged hard. They wanted to break the posts of the Singhs from where they were firing from. They said: “the Singhs are less. Move their posts. We will kill them! When our army goes in, how will they face us? Our army is the largest and greatest. How can they face us? We can win the world. Aurangzeb is the Shah of Shahs. Who can face his power?” The generals of the Turks yelled out in this way to their men. They charged ahead killing. Many heads were burst. The limbs were cut. The Paris and fairies came into the sky to see the battle. They married the martyrs. Lakhs of them came. A great battle raged. The swords were drenched in blood. Big and small, all were cut. The battle cannot be described. There were dead bodies everywhere. The bodies were piled upon each other. For 3 hours, metal clashed. The Turks got tired.
The Soobas were shocked to see this. In such little time, many had died. The Turks said: “we will lose. Guru ji has powers.” Some said: “they are in posts and forts. That’s why we were getting killed. Many of our people died. Nobody on their side was hit. We were on the field. They were in forts.” The Soobas were shocked. They lost the day’s battle. The first battle was lost. The remaining army retreated. They didn’t want any more soldiers to die. They came back.
The Paharis thought: “how is the battle happening? How did our people die? How did they fight? Tell us how to save ourselves? If we fight this way, we will all lose. We didn’t see any Singh die. The Turks are dying. We are getting scared seeing this.” Bheem Chand then said, folding his hands: “the Guru prepared their posts and forts. They are firing with strategy. You are fighting on the field. They are in forts. That’s why our armies suffered losses. We need to retreat. You shouldn’t fight like this. You are wise. In the morning, we should make a new plan. Let’s bring the canons forwards and aim at their people. The forts and posts should be destroyed. Let’s fire all of the canons at once. The army should stay back. Fire the canons and win. This is my strategy. I think this is a good plan. The big warriors the Satguru has, they are just thieves and thugs. They don’t know any other language besides the Kharag and the shields. They attack and keep cutting.”
