6-46 The Uch Peer of Peers
The Turk army had spread out looking for Guru ji in cities and villages. 10,000 men reached Machhiwara to look for Guru ji. Ghani Khan and Nabhi Khan were in the army. They heard about Guru ji and were looking for him. They wanted to find Guru ji before the army did. They hid from the army and looked for Guru ji. They had stayed with Guru ji for a long time in the past and used to sell horses. They were Guru ji’s employees for some time and got paid by him. They remembered that time that Guru ji helped them in their bad times. They were good people and thought to do good: “we should do Satguru ji’s Seva in some way. There is nothing better than this.” They both eventually reached Bhai Gulaba’s home. Guru ji recognized them as his own beloveds. Sri Prabhoo ji called them in. The two Khans did Guru ji’s Darshan and bowed to him. They folded their hands and said: “we are still your servants. Just as we served you before, we will still serve you (even though we wear the royal uniforms of the crown). Tell us what you would like us to do. We won’t refuse you.” Guru ji heard this and said: “stay with me for some time. We will go on ahead and I want you to go with us. You can leave when I give you leave. I will keep you for about 2 to 4 days.” The Khans said: “that is well. We will do as you say.” The Khans left Bhai Gulaba’s home and went to stay at another home. Satguru ji slept the night and so did the Sikhs. Bhai Gulaba went to sleep along with his family. They were still afraid of being caught by Turks and being punished for keeping Guru ji. They couldn’t sleep all night. They sat up on their bed, the two brothers, Bhai Gulaba and Bhai Punjaba. They decided: “we will give leave to Guru ji in the morning. We will give him gifts to indicate his time to leave.”
At Amritvela, Bhai Gulaba brought 5 Rajitpuns in a plate and woke up Guru ji. He placed the plate in front of Guru ji with a shawl and folded his hands. Satguru ji understood that this was the “Vidaigi,” the gift during leave. Guru ji said: “what, Gulaba, are you doing? Have some hope and courage. Don’t have doubt in your heart. Be alert as you were before.” Bhai Gulaba said: “Sri Satguru ji, you are omnipotent and capable in every way. I am poor and will get killed. The Turks will arrest me and throw me in to jail. They will punish my whole family.” Seeing his fear, Satguru ji spoke: “oh Gulaba, don’t have doubts. The Guru that is fierce, his Sikhs are also fierce. I won’t let hot air touch you.” Bhai Gulaba continued: “Sri Satguru ji, you are omnipotent and really strong. I am weak. I won’t be saved. There is nothing else that could be done when the whole village finds out.” Sri Prabhoo ji said: “you aren’t weak. Your Guru is strong. You should be strong too. I won’t let your one hair be hurt. I will stay by your side.” Bhai Gulaba was still scared. He rejected Guru ji’s blessing of being strong a third time: “I am weak. I won’t survive.” Prabhoo ji then said: “alright, stay weak then. You didn’t take my boon of being strong.”
In the past when Satguru ji went to Kurukshetra during the solar eclipses, he visited Chamkaur at that time. The Chaudhary at that time was Nihala Chaudhary. He served Guru ji with love. The Sangat of the area all heard of Guru ji’s arrival and came to do his Darshan. They brought a lot of gifts for Guru ji. There was a Kshatriya woman who came with love. She prepared a roll of cloth for Guru ji. Sri Guru ji saw her love and said: “Sikhni, ask for something.” The Kshatriya woman folded her hands, bowed and said: “Paatshaah, listen to my Ardaas: I am old now. I can’t go to Anandpur to see you. How can I go there? I spin fine cloths that I have brought for you. How can I have your Darshan? How can my wish be fulfilled? I want to give you more cloths.” Guru ji heard this and said: “there will be a time when I will come and take your cloths. I will come to your village and take your cloth. Keep it prepared for me. I will wear your chola on my body. You will take Prashaad from me.” Guru ji gave the woman Prashaad. The woman went home in bliss and prepared cloths for Guru ji. Many years ago, was this occurrence. Guru ji was going to complete that request now.
Guru ji thought about the past and said to Bhai Gulaba: “the old Kshatriya woman that lives here, call her to me. I will fulfill her wish.” Bhai Gulaba obeyed and looked for the old woman. He told her about Guru ji’s arrival into the village. The woman heard this and was filled with joy. She picked up two rolls of fine cloth she had spun. She came to Bhai Gulaba’s home and climbed the Chabarra. She folded her hands and bowed. She was mesmerized with Guru ji’s handsome and radiant face. She was really happy, beyond description. Love was overflowing in her heart. She said: “this is a fortunate time that I am seeing the Parmeshwar in front of me. I am seeing the Narayan sitting in front of me.” Guru ji was happy with her love. He said: “I came to take your last gift. Your time has come to leave this world. Leave your body and receive the highest status now. I will take you to Sach Khand.” The Mata did Guru ji’s Darshan and gave him the cloth. She went back to her home.
Guru ji said to Bhai Gulaba: “go to the tailor and have a Kaphni and Chadra sewn for me to wear.” Bhai Gulaba went to the tailor and had it prepared. He had a Chadra and Kurta made. He had clothes made in the same way for the Singhs. He brought them all back to Guru ji. Guru ji said: “have these clothes dyed blue.” When Bhai Gulaba went to the dyer, the dyer said he didn’t have blue dye prepared. It would take him 4 days before he prepares a blue dye. Bhai Gulaba came back and said: “the dyer doesn’t have the blue dye prepared. He will have it in a few days.” Guru ji said: “go back and tell him to dye the clothes. They will be blue.” Bhai Gulaba went back and relayed the message. The dyer dipped the clothes in the dye. When they came out, they were blue. Seeing this miracle, the dyer came to bow to Guru ji. Guru ji said: “you will be able to think about any colour and the dye will change to your colour that you wish. Don’t tell anyone though.” For 12 years the dyer continued. He then told somebody about his power and the miracles stopped from that point.
The blue kurtas and Chadras were ready. Nabhi Khan and Ghani Khan came. They had a plan which they said to Guru ji: “we will have you sit on a bed and pick it up on our heads. That’s how we will pass the Turk army.” Guru ji said: “bring a nice bed and cover it with a fine blue cloth. Have peacock feathers tied on all four legs.” They did so in a great way. The used canes of toot to make a canopy. They put a cloth on top for shade. They used a fist full of peacock feathers as a Chaur. Bhai Gulaba brought the clothes. Guru ji put on the clothes and took on the form of Dervishes. He took the Chadra over his head. He looked like the Hazis of Mecca. He didn’t tie his Dumalla. He let his hair loose in the back. He wore a cloth on his head like Fakirs. His face was radiant in the blue clothes. He looked really handsome as a Fakir Dervish. Guru ji sat on the bed and became the Peer of Uch. Bhai Gani Khan ji and Bhai Nabhi Khan ji lifted the front two legs of the bed. Bhai Dharam Singh ji and Bhai Maan Singh ji picked up the back legs. Bhai Daya Singh ji held the Chaur of peacock feathers. The Palki was decorated like Muslim Fakir palanquins.
They all came to the market and walked slowly. Nobody knew who they were. Guru ji travelled like a Peer. Whoever asked who this was: “who is he? Where did he come from and where is he going?” The Khans would respond: “he is the Peer of Uch. He is a Syed. He has just completed the Haz of Mecca. He travels as he wishes.” The Fakirs of Uch met with Guru Nanak Dev ji. They stopped cutting their hair from that point. For this reason, Guru ji looked like the Peers of Uch.
The Singhs hid their faces and Dumaalaas with Mundasas. They were on the back. They travelled through the roads. The Muslims bowed to them with faith as they thought it was a Muslim Fakir. They saw Guru ji’s new form. They crossed the whole village. Sri Satguru ji was complete in every way. After a few Kos, they all saw thousands of Turk soldiers who were running around looking for Guru ji. There were thousands of tents set up. One Umraav was sitting there. He had 5,000 men. When Guru ji crossed the Umraav, the soldiers saw him. They told the Umraav: “a Peer Fakir is crossing this area. We should see who it is. We are looking for the Guru. It could be the Guru disguised. We looked everywhere. We couldn’t find him. You should be alert about this. Unidentified people should not cross.” The Umraav thought it was a good idea. He sent his men to check the Fakir: “go and ask who it is on the bed.”
The Turks came and surrounded the bed. They spoke out loud: “stay there! Who are you? Where are you coming from and where are you going? Your religion and form, what is it?” Bhai Ghani Khan ji and Bhai Nabhi Khan ji said: “he is a Syed from Uch. He is a great Haazi who has completed the Haz. He goes where he wishes to go.” The soldiers went and told their Umraav. They said: “he is a Syed who just completed the Haz. He is travelling where he wants to go. He is from Uch Shareef. He is a great Peer. He does seem to have the same traditions of the Peers of Uch, with long hair.” The officers all discussed: “we don’t want the Guru to leave. Let’s have the Peer stay here the night and test him with our food. He can leave during the time of Fazzar.” The men went to Satguru ji and said: “the Umraav has commanded for you to spend the night with his. You can go during the time of Fazzar in the morning. You can go where you want to go.” Bhai Daya Singh ji heard this and said: “if you want to keep him, you need to set up a separate tent for the Peer. Only then will he stay. You can all come to see him there.” The men told the Umraav to set up a separate tent.
The tent was set near the gate of the fort. Nabhi Khan and Ghani Khan along with Bhai Dharam Singh ji and Bhai Maan Singh ji took the seat. Bhai Daya Singh ji waived the Chaur. They came through the first gate and set up a tent near the second gate. After a while a soldier came and said: “the Umraav says he wants a reference for you, Syed ji. If someone will give your reference then you can go. If there is no reference by tomorrow, you will have to stay here. You need to do something for yourself.” Sri Guru ji said: “there is a Syed (Inayat Ali) that lives in Noorpur. He is with the army that is in Machhiwara. Call for him. Send someone to get him. He will come by morning.” The Umraav quickly sent a mounted messenger to call the Syed of Noorpur. He said: “go find him. He is in the particular regiment the Peer says. Call him.” The messenger went to Machhiwara. Guru ji was kept in the tent.
6-47 The Kard Bheta/ The Syed of Noorpur’s Reference
When it was evening, the Umraav called the Bavarchi (cook) and said to him: “prepare food. The Peer is a Syed from Uch. He has his Mureeds with him as well that will eat with him. When the food is prepared, let them know so they can come. Make many types of good foods. Make meats and other foods.” When the food was ready, the Umraav said to one of his men: “go to the Peer and bring him here.” The man went to Satguru ji and folded his hands while announcing: “Peer ji, the food is ready. Please come with your Mureeds to eat.” Sri Prabhoo ji heard this and said: “the Peer doesn’t eat food. I keep the Roza all the time. I eat only one Jaun (millet) grain a day (the grain of Naam). My Mureeds will eat though.” The man went back to the Umraav and told him what the Peer (Guru ji) had said.
The 3 Singhs with Guru ji folded their hands and said: “how will we be saved now? What shall we do? You are omnipotent in every way. We will do as you say.” Satguru ji said: “don’t doubt. Say “Satnam” and do the Bheta of the Kard before anything else. Say Vahiguru and then put the food in your mouth. Bring some of the food along with you for me. When they call you, go and eat. Say the Mool Mantra and eat.” The person who came to the Umraav, he said: “the Peer keeps a strict Roza. He only eats one grain of Jaun a day. He has made his body used to this. The 5 of his Mureeds will eat with you though. Shall I call them if it be your command?” The Umraav heard this and said: “go and call him. The Umraav seems to be really great.”
The man came back to Guru ji and said: “please send your Mureeds.” The 5 Sikhs got up and sat with the Umraav. In the tradition of the Turks, they all eat in one big rakeb (plate). They 5 all sat with the other officers. There were other Turks there who were praising Guru ji: “he fought Lakhs of armies but he fearlessly left through the battle with ease.” Everyone sat with each other to eat. The other Turks asked: “how is the Peer? Where is he from? Where is he going?” Bhai Nabhi Khan ji and Bhai Ghani Khan ji spoke, praising Guru ji: “he is always in bliss. He is the master of himself. He goes where he pleases. We don’t know his ways. If he blesses someone seeing their love, they prosper. If he curses someone, they are destroyed. He went to Mecca and is now carefree. He is connected to Khuddah all the time. There is nobody like him.” As they were talking, the food came. The food was poured out into the huge rakebs (plates). The Khans got one plate and one rakeb was given to Bhai Daya Singh ji and Bhai Dharam Singh ji to eat from. One rakeb was given to the Umraav and Bhai Maan Singh ji to share. The other officers shared the plates with one other person and ate. The Singhs took out their Kards and ran it through the food by saying “Satnam.” Bhai Maan Singh ji also took out his Kard and ran it through his portion of the food. The Umraav saw this and became doubtful. He asked: “what is this that you are doing? You ran the Kard through your food an made it impure. Who among the Turks does this, touching the Kard to the food?” Bhai Maan Singh ji was brilliant. He quickly answered: “when we went to Mecca, a new tradition has started from there that everything will be made pure by iron. You should first touch the food with your Kard before eating. This is the command from Mecca. Our Peer commanded us for this reason: “touch your food with your Kard before eating.” After saying this, the Singhs began eating their food. When the Singhs looked at their food, it became Karah Prashaad from Sach Khand. Only they could see this. Bhai Maan Singh ji saw half of the plate as Karah Prashaad. He ate the Karah. The Turks couldn’t see this. They couldn’t tell if it was Halal meat or not. The Turks ate their food. The Singhs were amazed to see the miracle. They ate the Karah Prashaad with joy while praising Guru ji in their hearts. Bhai Maan Singh ji and Bhai Dharam Singh ji packed some food for Guru ji. They then washed their hands with water and came back to Guru ji.
Guru ji asked: “did you bring something back or not?” The Singhs showed Guru ji what they brought. Guru ji said: “keep it with you. Give it to me when I ask for it.” It was soon night and everyone went to sleep. Guru ji slept on the bed. In the morning, when the sun came up, the Syed of Noorpur came. This Syed used to teach Guru ji Farsi. He was well aware of Guru ji’s power. He lived in Noorpur and was very wise. He wanted to see the Khuddah and therefore he came to Guru ji. He met Satguru ji many times in Anandpur. The Bhagwant blessed him. The messenger that came to call him, he said: “there is a Hazi Syed who sits on a bed. We want you to give his reference.” The Syed of Noorpur figured out that he was being called by Guru ji for a specific task: “I can do a task for Guru ji now! My life will be a success now! I will be blessed. My good Karma has come to fruition.” The Syed quickly came. He stepped through the gate and saw the tent. He entered the tent and saw Satguru ji sitting on the bed. He saw Guru ji’s radiant face in the clothes of a Fakir Peer. He was coming to bow when Guru ji signaled the Syed with his eyes: “don’t come to me yet. Go to the Turks first.” The Syed figured out what Satguru ji was pointing towards. He understood what Guru ji wanted him to do. He turned and went to the Umraav.
Where the Turk office was, the Syed went there. He said “Salaamalaykum” and sat down with the others. He was seated with respect. The Umraav said: “this Syed has come to us. Have you met him before? Do you recognize him? The Guru of the Hindus changed his disguise and left. He killed Lakhs of soldiers of the Shah and left through the army. He left alive. We are all looking for him. This is the reason we have stopped this Hazi. We want you to give his reference. If you have met him before and know about him, tell us now. He says he visited Mecca and keeps a Roza everyday to do a Tapp on his body. He eats one grain of Jaun a day and goes where he pleases.” The Syed heard this in the court and said: “this is a great Peer. He is the Peer of Peers! Whatever he says from his mouth, that becomes reality right away. His joy and anger are too big. I am surprised in my heart that you have stopped him here. He hasn’t cursed you yet, has he? If he wishes to turn the earth upside down, he can do so with his words. He is very powerful and omnipotent. He has forgiven you. That’s why he hasn’t said anything to you yet. Consider yourselves lucky and fortunate. I have tested him many times. Whatever he says casually, becomes reality right away. Go and ask for his forgiveness by holding his feet. Fold your hands and ask for his forgiveness. Let him go. He goes where he pleases. His mind and body are pure. He has won his desires. His Tapp is too big. His life, character and mind are pure.” The Umraav got scared, hearing the Syed. He got up right away with his officers and took 500 Rajitpuns from the treasury.
The Umraav, his officers and the Syed of Noorpur all came to meet the Peer of Uch, Guru Gobind Singh ji. They all bowed to Guru ji and sat down. They said: “oh great Peer! We wade the mistake of stopping you here. Please forgive us. You are forgiving. We were only doing our job.” They presented 500 Rajitpuns and asked for forgiveness. The other officers saw the Umraav give money and so they all took out their money and placed it in front of Guru ji as well. Seeing this, Satguru ji said: “you are not at fault. You were only doing your duty. I lost nothing by staying here. I was going to sleep somewhere anyways. I spent the night here in peace. I will leave now. Don’t worry about all this.” The Umraav was happy. He folded his hands and said: “go where you wish to go. Give us your Darshan again some day.” The Umraav left to his court.
Guru ji had his bed picked up by the Sikhs. The Khans and the Singhs lifted the bed and headed off. When they travelled a Ko, the Syed came to meet Guru ji again. He bowed to Guru ji’s lotus feet with love. He said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, I spoke to the Turks and made up a story. I work with them though. If something comes out in the future about the truth, please assist me then. I don’t want the Turks to cause me any harm. Please say this. I wish for this.” The Compassionate One laughed and said: “I won’t let hot air touch you. The ones who help others with their body and mind, Khuddah is always by their side, protecting them. You won’t have shortages of anything. You will have a lot of wealth. You will eat and spend as much as you wish. If you have paper and ink, bring it. I will write a Hukamnama for you. Keep that with you. The Singhs will give you gifts in the future. My Sikh Sangat will obey this Hukamnama and give money to your family.” The Syed brought a paper and ink. Guru ji wrote a Hukamnama with joy and peace. Guru ji wrote: “the Syed is my good son who served me well. He is a brother of the Sikhs. The Sikhs should give him 1.25 Rajitpuns when they meet him.” Many Singhs brought gifts for the Syed and his family in the future. Maharaj Ranjit Singh ji gave the Syed’s family Jagirs for income.
The Syed was happy to receive the Hukamnama. He bowed to Guru ji’s feet. Guru ji travelled as the Peer of Uch, with blue robes. The weapons were all covered. His beautiful hair was hanging backwards. He covered his head with a blue Chadra. He had a long beard and wore a long blue chola. Peacock feathers were tied to the legs of the bed. Bhai Daya Singh ji waived a peacock feathered Chaur over Guru ji’s head. There was a canopy on top made of toot sticks. A Chadra hung overhead for shade.
6-48 Fatah Doesn’t give the Horse/ Nabhi Khan Ghani Khan Given Leave
Prabhoo ji travelled slowly, quite a distance. Guru ji and the Sikhs came to a village named Kanech. He rested near a lake. A Sikh lived in Kanech. Guru ji thought of him. He was a Jaat named Fatah. He came to Satguru ji and did his Darshan. He recognized Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji in the disguise of the Uch Peer. Fatah folded his hands and bowed. Guru ji sat under a tree. Fatah sat near Guru ji and said: “please tell me a Seva I can do for you. I will bring you food to eat. If there is any other type of Seva, please tell me. I will do it.” Sri Guru ji said: “the mare that you have in your home, bring it and give it to me. I will ride the mare and go on.” Fatah thought and said to Guru ji: “I will bring it.”
Fatah went home and took out a saddle. He saddled a smaller horse though. He brought the small horse to Guru ji. He didn’t bring the horse of the better breed. He wondered where Guru ji would take the horse, not returning it to him: “he has escaped from the Turk surrounding. Who knows where he will go. The bigger horse is expensive. I don’t have the strength to give that one.” He thought of this and came to Guru ji. Satguru ji saw the small horse and said: “listen Fatah, this horse is too small. It is not appropriate for me to ride. I won’t ride this. I’ve never ridden such a small horse. The horse you brought is not good. The mare that is at your home, the strong and fast one, go and bring that one.” The Jaat folded his hands and said: “my son-in-law came before you. He saddled it and took it. He hasn’t come back yet. I don’t know where he went. If he comes, I’ll bring it. I don’t know when he will be back. You can’t wait that long.” Guru ji heard the Jaat and said: “why are you being deceitful? I will return your horse after a little while. I will get another horse from the next village I visit.” Fatah lied again: “Guru ji, I am speaking the truth. I don’t know how to be deceitful. My son-in-law took the horse. Believe me.” Sri Prabhoo ji got angry and said: “not is your horse, nor are you! Both are gone by your lie.” Satguru ji said this and went on his way on the bed.
Fatah went back home, after being cursed. He took his small horse back home. He lowered his head. His mind was happy that he saved his horse: “it was good I kept the mare.” When he came home, he tied the small horse up. When he came home, the bigger mare was bitten by a snake. It died right away. It was dark so he didn’t know the mare was dead. He thought the horse was sitting down. He hit the mare with his knee to wake it up. He did it over and over again. The snake was sitting right next to the mare. It bit the Jaat on his foot. He yelled: “hai hai!” He came outside. He died within the hour. In this way the fool died. He lied to the Satguru.
Prabhoo ji travelled on the bed. He wore a blue Chadra over his head. Hindus and Turks saw this and bowed to him. They didn’t know it was Guru ji. They saw the peacock Chaur. People said: “this is a great being.” They saw this and moved aside. They all came near and bowed. Nobody knew the truth. In this way, Guru ji travelled. Guru ji then came to a village named Haiher. Guru ji said to Bhai Nabhi Khan ji and Bhai Ghani Khan ji: “Mahant Kripal Udaasi lives here. It is getting dark. We should do a Dhera at his place. We came far. It’s hard to go ahead. We will stay the night here. We will go in the morning. You can leave from here now. Meet your brothers and colleagues. My way ahead is easier now. Many Sikhs of the Guru live in the Jungle Desh.” The Khans heard this and said: “we will do as you say. If it is not good without us, we can leave after 2 days. Whatever Seva we get to do of yours, we can get the blessings by staying with you.” After saying this, they came to the Dhera of Udaasi Kirpal Das ji. When Kirpal Das ji heard: “Guru ji has come!” Mahant Kirpal Das ji ran out. He grabbed Guru ji’s feet. He said: “please come inside. This is your Dhera. I am your servant.” Guru ji came off the bed. Mahant ji took Guru ji inside without doubt. Guru ji set up the Dhera. The other Sadhoos came to Guru ji’s Darshan. They were powerful. Many Udaasis and other Sadhoos came. The 3 Singhs and 2 Pathaans were there. Sri Guru Bhagwan ji said: “Maan Singh, at night when you went to eat with the Turks, I told you to pack some food from there. Do you remember this?” The 3 Singhs said: “we obeyed you and packed some food. We brought it with us. You didn’t ask for it again so we didn’t give it to you. We have it packed up. The 3 of us packed it. If it be your command, we can open it up now.” Sri Guru ji said: “open it and show everyone here. What you ate there, show everyone what you ate. Your doubts will be cleared as well.” The 3 Singhs opened up the packs. They put it on their hands and showed everyone. It was Karah Prashaad. They said: “we ate Prashaad. You can all have it.” They all said: “this is Karah. What is there to doubt?” Guru ji and all the Udaasis saw this and destroyed their doubts. The Khans were going to be blessed. Guru ji was happy with their Seva. Guru ji had his golden bracelets with gems in it. He gave both of them 5 Tola bracelets each. He made both of them happy. He wrote a Hukamnama for them as well. He commanded the whole Sangat: “they have served me well. Oh Sikhs, believe them. The Sangat is to keep giving them gifts from my Seva.” Guru ji stamped the Hukamnama. The Khans were really happy. They went back home.
The 3 Singhs remained with Guru ji. Sant Kirpal Das ji noticed Guru ji’s form. He wondered: “if he wants to stay with me, there will be conflict here. My Dhera will be destroyed. It took a long time for me to make this Dhera.” The fear of the Turks changed his faith. Losing his faith, he said to Guru ji at night: “listen Satguru ji, oh Compassionate One, many Turks like in this village. Halva, Raira and Talwandi; many Mussalmans live here. Thousands live here. When they hear about you coming here, they will come and attack us right away. I won’t be able to stop them. It’s not good for you to stay here. Lamma Village is good for you. They will all keep you there. Thousands of people there are fighters from grandfathers and grandsons. They can fight. They are not afraid.” Guru ji heard this and said: “are you trying to scare me from the Turks of this village? I’ve been killing them my whole life. It seems as though you are afraid. You lost faith in me. For this reason, Turks will scare you.” He cursed the Sadhoo Kirpal Das. Guru ji left the next morning.
There was a treasurer that Mahant Kirpal Das had. He was known as the “Bhandari.” He brought 5 Rajitpuns for Guru ji and bowed to him. Guru ji grabbed his hand and closed his fist. Guru ji said: “squeeze it harder. Don’t let this treasure open. Keep it closed.” The Mahant said: “you told him to keep it closed, oh Master. When will we open it? Be compassionate on your Sadhoos.” Sri Dasam Guru ji said: “listen, your Ghaddi will carry on. On the 10th place, he will open up the treasury.”
Kavi Santokh Singhji says: “that treasure has not opened up yet. They only save.” The Mahant called the villagers and said: “Guru ji is leaving, take his bed to the next village.” 4 people from the Haiher Village picked up the bed. They left from the Udaasi Dhera. Guru ji was on the bed. He said: “the bed is lower on one side. Walk evenly.” On one side, the short person said: “I am shorter than the other 3.” Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “become even!” His words became reality right away. The shorter person grew to the same height as the others. Everyone saw this and were amazed at the miracle. Kirpal Das ji went along them. The Singhs walked along.
A Jatti name Mai Bhatti ji came. She came had picked the bed on her head on one side. Guru ji said: “stop her! What does she want? Ask her.” Bhai Daya Singh ji stopped her and said: “what do you wish for? You can get what you want from Guru ji.” The woman was happy. She said: “I want my son to get married.” Guru ji said: “your family will grow. There will be 7 weddings.” The woman was happy. Her son had 3 weddings. Her grandsons all had 7 weddings. I, Kavi Santokh Singh, have seen it myself. I have seen there 6 generations. They all end up getting married 7 times still. Either a wife dies or some other reason happens. Guru ji’s curses and boons were are fulfilled. The whole world knows about this.
6-49 Mahi Sent to Sirhind for News
Satguru ji travelled many Kos. The Raja of Jagrava, Rai Kalla, was a wise person. He was born a Turk but followed the Dharma of Hindus. He was compassionate and did good deeds. He followed the righteous path. He heard of Guru ji’s praises and wanted to serve him. He took an army of 300 men and set off to do the Darshan of Guru ji. The Master met him while he was travelling. The Omniscient One, Guru ji, wore blue clothes and was sitting on the bed. Rai Kalla got off his horse and walked on foot when he saw Guru ji from afar. He folded his hands and bowed when he met Guru ji. Guru ji’s lotus feet were the giver of Joy. Rai Kalla bowed to his feet and put the dust from Guru ji’s feet to his forehead and face. He said: “oh Master, I have heard of the deception the Turks did with you. I heard of the battles you fought with them. I heard how the Turks didn’t want to fight you because you kept destroying their armies. They saw your bravery and were amazed. You didn’t let the million men come close. You are omnipotent and holder of many powers. You can make what you want to in the blink of an eye. You can do the impossible. After being so powerful, you behave like a normal human being of Kaliyuga, showing this to the world. You are unaffected by pain or joy, not even a little bit. People, like us, think that Aurangzeb deceived you but in fact he ruined it for himself. He became your enemy.” Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “it was supposed to happen like this. What is supposed to happen will happen; nothing can erase it. Men and women can try a million times but they can’t stop it. Devatas and Daynts must obey it and take it on their heads. Humans are nothing, who can try to stop the will of Akaal Purakh. Listen Kalla Rao, mount your horse and let’s go on ahead.” Rai Kalla obeyed and rode his horse on ahead. Guru ji’s bed was lifted and taken ahead.
They all reached Lamma Village. Rai Kalla said: “rest here. You have travelled far. Please bless me with your sight. Stay in Lamma Village. This is my area. I will do your Seva. Spend some time here and fulfill my wish.” Guru ji said: “send a messenger who walks fast. I need someone to go to Sirhind and get news of my mother and my sons. I will stay here till then and only then go forward. Mata Goojri ji headed that way but I didn’t hear of her news afterwards. I don’t know how she is doing.” Rai Kalla said: “listen Sri Prabhoo ji, that place is about 10 Zozens away (80 or 90 km). It’s too far. It will be hard to send a mounted messenger. The Turks will be suspicious. There is a Mahi (cow tender) I have in my village, Noora Mahi. He can walk really fast. If it be your command, I can send him now. He will travel 10 Zozens. He will take about 2 days to go and come back.” Guru ji said: “send him quickly then. He can get news and tell me.” Guru ji got off the bed. The fearless Guru sat under a Jhand tree.
Noora Mahi was told: “go quickly.” Guru ji said: “I will give you a lot of money. Go quick!” Noora Mahi obeyed and left at around 5 am. He walked like the wind. He walked really fast. He crossed all of the guards and regiments of the Turk army. He crossed them all. The army was all going back to Sirhind. They were all surprised and upset. They said: “we looked for the Guru but we couldn’t find him. We didn’t see him nor catch him. He went through everyone. He is a great warrior.” Some said: “he was killed in battle. There were Lakhs of bodies. We could have found him there.” Others said: “he wasn’t killed. The Singhs looked like him.” They all went to Sirhind with grief. There was crying in every home as every household lost someone in the battle. Many were killed by the Singhs. They lost Chachas, nephews, sons, fathers, brothers, fathers-in-law, brothers-in-law, sons-in-law, Mammas or relatives. Wherever you turned, you saw women crying and beating themselves. They cried and spoke of their dead. The Pahari homes had the same thing. Delhi had the same thing as well as the homes of Kabul, Kandahar, Kashmir and Lahore. It was like mourning was a Kanjar and putting on shows everywhere. The world came to watch as the dance of mourning was happening everywhere. These were the people who attacked Anandpur. The Nainas clapped and sang the songs of death. They sang their folk Alaahniyas. They clapped by saying: oh oh, hai, hai.” They slapped their chests and thighs. This crying and screaming was everywhere in Hindustan. The Takhat of Delhi shook. It was devastated by this slap. There was crying and screaming. The Jamms were happy. Death was pleased with the crying. This was the power of Guru ji’s arrows. Wherever the Turks were, there was mourning. The Paharis were in mourning. Many Rajas died. Many soldiers died. The crying echoed in the mountains from Himachal to the south. Mourning covered the earth. The army came back to Sirhind. They fought the Guru but it was chaos for them. It was like Kyaamat; judgement day. They were surprised. They said: “look how many of our men died. The Guru still couldn’t be caught. He killed many of our men and left.” In this way, the news spread throughout the land. They cried, beat themselves and gave themselves pain. All of Hindustan was in mourning and upset. Noora Mahi soon reached Sirhind. He heard of the whole news that happened. He heard as it happened.
Satguru ji was sitting with Rai Kalla since morning and discussing the battles he had with the Turks. Rai Kalla said: “the Turk Emperor is a fool. His roots won’t remain.” The officers of Rai Kalla praised Rai Kalla to Guru ji: “Sri Guru ji, our king is a Dharmatma. He has killed many sinners. The village of Tihara is where the border of 3 places is near the Sutlej: Malva, Puaad and Doaba. In this place Lakhs of people lived here. Turks controlled the area. They were sinners who slaughtered many cows. When our Rai heard this, he couldn’t tolerate the killing of cows. He gathered his army and sounded the Nagaras. He came close to the village and fought a great battle. He charged and killed many. The Turks couldn’t take it and went inside the forts. Boths sides were set up and the battle started. Rai Kalla surrounded the village. Nobody could come in or out. For 1 year they fought. After a year, the Turks were helpless. They got scared and sent their ambassadors. They talked: “Rai, why are you here to fight? We have nothing to give or take with you. Men from both sides are dying for no reason.” Rai Kalla spoke: “stop the killing of cows. That’s why I am here, spending Lakhs of money.” The Turks heard this and spoke in a helpless way: “we accept your terms. We won’t kill cows from now on. Believe us.” The Rai said: “give a reference that will be your guarantor. Only then will I believe you. Otherwise, I will fight and kill you. I will find you and kill you. I won’t let this sin happen in my area.” The Turks in the fort said: “who will take our guarantee? We don’t see anyone that will come here in the middle. We have thought about this. There is the River Sutlej between us. We can swear upon it if you want the reference. Take us to the river and we will swear upon it. We will write a paper for you and touch it with the waters of the Sutlej.” When the sinners said this, Rai Kalla believed them. The river was 7 Kos away from Tihara. Both sides sat near the shore and first did the Pooja. The Turks wrote a letter of oath: “if we kill cows again, may the river punish us.” They wrote this. The Rai was happy. They wrote the paper and signed it.
Rai Kalla came back to his home. All of the castes lived there with 36 types of tradesmen. Listen Sri Prabhoo Satguru ji, Rai Kalla and the Turks held the truce for 1 year. The Turks killed a cow after the year. Rai Kalla ji heard about this. He did an Ardaas to the river: “you were the witness to these sinners that swore upon you. You must punish them. They are unfixable sinners. Live up to your existence and punish them.” That day ended at it was night. The river was 7 Kos away from Tihara. The river changed its flow that night and came towards the Tihara village. The flood came to the village. Everyone woke up. The houses were destroyed. Many men and women drowned. Animals drowned. There was a lot of noise. It was midnight. Nobody knew about them. They didn’t know where the water was coming from. There was no rain. Wealth and homes were destroyed. The possessions and food were all gone. It was a dark night, people ran away. They couldn’t see anything. They all drowned. There was water everywhere. Some survived. Some died. For many miles there was destruction. It all drowned. In this way, the Sutlej honoured its oath. Sri Guru ji, our Rai is a good man by your blessings. He does a lot of Satsang. He does good deeds.” Sri Kalgidhar ji heard this and gave him a boon: “he will get a good status in the afterlife. There is no punishment where he will go. His path is clear. Shaabaash! His Karma was accepted by the Sutlej.” Rai Kalla ji heard this and bowed to Guru ji’s feet.
6-50 Noora Mahi Tells the Events of the Sahibzadas
During the time that Noora Mahi had been gone, Guru ji had been sitting and speaking with Rai Kalla. The Giver of Joy was sitting on the bed while waiting. It was soon afternoon. Rai Kalla was sitting close by with his 300 soldiers. Hundreds of others came to visit the Master. There was a crowd around Guru ji. They were lined up quite far. They all came to bow to Guru ji and see his radiant form. Seeing that it was noon, Sri Guru ji said: “listen Rai Kalla, the Mahi hasn’t returned yet. Go and see if he’s back or not. It is now noon. He left in the morning. He hasn’t returned yet.” Rai Kalla folded his hands and said: “he only left this morning. It’s 40 Kos (around 100 km) from here. He will reach tomorrow and tell us everything. It’s 80 Kos of travelling for him. It takes a lot of strength.” Guru ji heard this and went quiet. He started some other conversation about how Bheem Chand started the battles: “he gathered the army of the 22 Pahari states. They all attacked me, together.” An hour passed speaking about this and then Guru ji spoke all of a sudden: “tell one of your men to climb the tree and see how far Noora Mahi is. See if he’s coming or not.” Rai Kalla said: “he probably hasn’t even reached Sirhind yet. How would he be coming back yet? What’s the use of climbing a tree right now? He may be back tomorrow evening. He won’t stop on the way. He will come as quick as he can.” Satguru ji, the Treasure of Virtues, thought of something else. When it was around 3 pm, Guru ji spoke a third time, where everyone heard: “go and climb the tree to see if Mahi is coming or not.” Rai Kalla heard this and said to his men: “the Complete Purshottam has spoken 3 times. We have nothing to lose. Go and climb the tree to see. I have full faith that his words are always true.” One man climbed the tree and looked far. He climbed and saw Noora Mahi walking towards them from afar. He was shocked and spoke: “I can see him coming!” He kept watching till Noora Mahi hadn’t come close. He recognized Noora Mahi and came down from the tree. He came down and told everyone. They were all shocked that Noora Mahi travelled 20 Zozens: “this must be a miracle Guru ji is doing that we don’t understand.”
Noora Mahi bowed and sat down. Guru ji said: “tell me what happened in Sirhind. What did you hear about?” Noora Mahi began to tell the events of Sirhind. He folded his hands and spoke: “the Malech have done a grave sin and killed the Sahibzadas. He caused a big conflict and made them Shaheed.” Rai Kalla ji said: “when they separated from Guru ji, what happened? How were they arrested? Tell us everything from the beginning. Satguru ji has been sitting here and waiting for you. Tell him.”
Noora Mahi folded his hands and spoke with everyone present: “listen Prabhoo ji, when they separated, One Brahmin, Gangu Bahman, deceitfully took the Sahibzadas and Mata ji to his village. He was corrupt. He separated them from everyone else. Mata ji and the Sahibzadas were on the chariot. There was a mule that had golden coins on it. Gangu took everything to his home. His village is Kheri. He made them go there. He was a Masand (in some historical accounts, he was a cook of the Guru’s home) and that’s why Mata ji went with him. He spoke sweetly to Mata ji and took her to his home. He was eyeing her money. He saw the bundle of Dinars on the mule. Everyone was tired and hungry. They rested in the Brahmin’s home. The Brahmin took the bundle of money and hid it outside his home, burying it in a hole in the ground. He did this at night. The sinner came and said to Mata ji: “Mata ji, there are thieves in my village. You should take care of your things. I’m telling you this now. Don’t blame me later. I am telling you right now.” The servant of Mata ji was gone out to bathe. He came back at that time. Mata ji told the servant to take care of the belongings. When he checked, he said: “I can’t find the bundle of money. The clothes and other things are still here. Only the Brahmin is in the home. Nobody else was here. It’s him and us.” Mata ji said: “ask him where it is. Maybe he kept it safe.” The servant asked Gangu if he had hidden it: “did you keep it safe? If you did, that’s good.” The sinner Bahman began to speak out loud: “is this the reward you are giving me? I saved all of your lives! It is Navrang’s rule! Don’t call me a thief! I will get arrested. What rewards will you give me later? I saved your lives and you’re now calling me a thief! I can’t trust you anymore! Leave from my home now! If anyone finds out I kept the Guru’s mother, I will get arrested. The Turks are upset at Guru ji. Your son killed many Turks. How was that a good thing? He wanted to defeat the Badshah and caused this battle for this reason. He has gone against the Emperor. I brought you to my home and you allege that I have stolen from you. Leave from my home now! You’ve been here only a little time.” He yelled out so the village could hear. He wanted Mata ji and the Sahibzadas to leave so he could keep the money. He was a sinner and so he thought: “I will have them all arrested. I will keep all of the Dinars. Nobody will know about it. I will be rewarded for having them arrested.” He left his home and was going to go to Morinda. He met the Chaudhary of Kheri. He wanted to take him to Morinda and have the Sahibzadas arrested. He said to Chaudhary of his village: “let’s go to Morinda and have his mother arrested. The Guru’s mother and his two young sons are with me. We will get rewarded for this. The Turks will be happy arresting them.” They both decided this and set off quickly. They went looking for the Turk army that was close by.
They met Jani Khan and Mani Khan in Morinda. They met the Rangar generals and said: “listen Meea ji, we should be rewarded. We have some news for you. The Guru’s mother and his two sons are in my home. I brought them there. Come with me and arrest them. Don’t delay. Take them to the Emperor and collect your reward. Think of us when you get it.” The Khans saddled their horses and set off with their regiment. They came to Kheri, quickly. Listen Guru ji, Mata ji and the 2 Sahibzadas were taken on the chariot. The foolish Khans took them to Sirhind the next day.
Sooba Wajeed Khan, where he had just come with his huge army, the Khans said: “Navaab ji, we have brought the mother and two sons of Guru Gobind Singh ji.” They set off at night and reached in the morning. The Navaab said: “take them to the Tanda Burj, where nobody comes. Keep a strict guard there.” When the people of Sirhind heard, the people came to see them. Everyone looked at the Brahmin and swore at him: “damned are you! You are a traitor! What did you do you fool? Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji is the Guru and giver of the world. He is the Master. You had his sons arrested. You ate his salt and stabbed him in the back. The Guru has blessed Lakhs. He came to protect the Hindus. His father gave his head and destroyed the roots of the Turks. Their lotus feet are worshiped by Devatas and Daynts. Rishis, Jogis, Munis and saints meditate on Guru ji’s feet. They reach high statuses from him. You did Adharma with him and cheated him. Hell will hold its nose from you, you are so low! Where the Kumbi Narak is, where souls are burnt; there is no other sinner like you destined to go there. You are born a Brahmin but acted like a Chandaal. What did you do, you butcher? We curse you Lakhs of times. You will be punished.” The people of Sirhind gathered in this way. There was a big crowd there. They saw the two beautiful Sahibzadas. Everyone was pushed back. The Sahibzadas were taken to the cold Burj along with Mata Goojri ji. Where they told Mata ji to sit, she sat there with her grandsons in her lap. They were in the jail of the Turks. She thought to herself: “who knows what will happen to us. What will they do? We are under their control now. They will take their anger out on us. I didn’t listen to my son and that is why I am facing danger. My son is angry with me. He has separated from me. He doesn’t know where I am. When we stayed in the fort, my son said: “in 7 days are all the joys.” I didn’t trust him. The whole family separated. Where would Sri Guru ji be right now?” She took deep breaths and hugged her grandsons. Her tears wouldn’t stop. The fear of the enemy was present. The news spread in every home in Sirhind. Thousands came, expressing their grief of the situation.
