6-31 Leaving Anandpur
Everyone heard Guru ji’s words and started getting ready to leave. The Singhs fastened their many weapons and got ready in attention for battle. They all gathered their luggage. The Khalsa took all the weapons they could. Whoever had energy and strength to pick up things, they picked up the luggage atop their heads. When it was about 9 pm, everyone was ready to go. Sri Guru ji commanded: “collect the Vaheer and send them off.” The people heard the command and the people set off. Everyone was upset leaving the fort of Anandpur. They faced east and set off. Some were ahead and some were behind. When it was around 11 pm, Mata Goojri ji got ready. She gathered all of her luggage. She had bags of golden coins which she packed upon a mule. One or two servants walked with the mule. She took her younger two grandsons, Baba Zorawar Singh ji and Baba Fateh Singh ji, and boarded her chariot upon Guru ji’s command. She made the grandsons board the chariot first. She then boarded it herself. Satguru ji’s wives, Mata Sundri ji and the peaceful-minded Mata Sahib Devi ji; bowed to Guru ji with their hands folded. They sat in their palanquins. They got permission and left Anandpur. The night was really dark. The other people, who were not soldiers, they gathered and travelled. The Vaheer travelled many Kos from Anandpur. Guru ji was still sitting in the fort in Bir Rass. He made all of the preparations and was sending everyone off. The people left towards Kiratpur Sahib. The Singhs were ready with their weapons. They stayed with Guru ji for fighting. When it was around midnight, Satguru ji made his own preparations to leave. When Guru ji first came out, he went to the place of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji, the cremation place of Guru ji’s Sees, Sees Ganj Sahib. Guru ji stood there in the Darbar and did an Ardaas. He bowed and then said out loud: “is there a Sadhoo that will stay here and do the Brooming and lighting of a Deva everyday? Someone needs to do the Seva of the place of Sri Gurudev ji with love.” Guru ji asked three times. Nobody spoke out of fear in their hearts. Guru ji had started an interesting drama that no one’s patience remained stable. Nobody wanted to stay. There was a Sadhoo named Baba Gurbaksh ji standing near Guru ji. He was an Udaasi Mahatma from Baba Sri Chand ji’s Samprada. Guru ji looked at him and said: “live here and do the Seva. Do the Seva and make your life a success.” His (Vidhya) Guru was Baba Mahadev ji Udaasi. (According to the original Sampradas, a person’s Vidhya Guru was considered the Guru. The 22 Manjhis that were started by Guru Amardas ji was for the purpose of spreading Sikhi. They were regarded as the Gurus of the Sangat that followed them as they administered Charan Pahul to all. Guru Amardas ji was considered the Ishwar Guru, the supreme) He said: “where will he eat from and stay stable? The Paharis are big fools. They have bad wisdoms. They are bad and corrupt people. They will give him problems after you leave. He will need food to eat everyday. Other than you, nobody else knows us or takes care of us. You already know this. He will do the Seva but please provide him a place.” Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “this Darbar of the True Guru is true. There is a cart full of food standing here. We are leaving it here. Take it and keep the Langar going. The Langar will never stop here. In the evenings, you will get the Darshan of the Guru everyday. The Guru will be among the Divaan. You will be able to see the Guru. There will be no type of shortage here. Day and night, I will be by your side. Don’t have any type of depression in your mind. This place will have no shortages.” Guru ji gave hope in this way to Baba Gurbaksh ji. Baba Gurbaksh ji bowed to Guru ji and obeyed Guru ji’s command with patience. He was determined to stay alone in Anandpur. The Prabhoo did the Parkarma of the place and left.
Guru ji’s horse was ready and brought to him at that time. Guru ji mounted his horse and set off. Bhai Daya Singh ji and Bhai Aalam Singh ji along with Bhai Uday Singh ji were with the Master. The 5 Muktas: Bhai Deva Singh ji, Bhai Ram Singh ji, Bhai Ishar Singh ji, Bhai Tahil Singh ji and Bhai Fateh Singh ji; were on Guru ji’s left side. Bhai Mokham Singh ji and Bhai Sahib Singh ji were on Guru ji’s right side. Behind Guru ji were all the other Singhs on their horses. Satguru ji was in the middle. The Singhs travelled on their horses, surrounding him. Baba Ajeet Singh ji carried a heavy bow and travelled on his horse. Baba Jujhaar Singh ji, Guru ji’s second son, was behind Guru ji. Bhai Himmat Singh ji travelled with a bow and rifle in hand. They all had their rifles ready in case a fight broke out. The rifles were filled with two bullets down the barrel. The toras were ready. The Mor of the Kalas were bent and ready. The rifles were filled with gunpowder and the Paleetas were ready. The lids of the Paleetas were open. Many bundles of arrows were loaded onto many mules. There were many soldiers with Guru ji. They had Khapra arrows in the quivers. Sailas, Tomars and Saangs were loaded. The Singhs were 4 swords and loaded their bodies with shields and chakras. They travelled slowly. The villages watched Guru ji leave from afar. Some stood high and some stood low, watching Guru ji leave Anandpur.
Prabhoo ji had travelled some Kos. The enemy had become blind. They couldn’t see what was going on. Their posts were set miles away from Anandpur out of fear of being attacked by the Singhs. They were waiting for Guru ji to leave so they could surround him and arrest him. Guru ji had come to Ram Ghanola village. 500 Singhs were around Guru ji. The enemy stayed back and didn’t know when Guru ji had left. They made an analyses and realised that Guru ji had left: “in seems that the Guru is no longer in the fort. We can’t hear any noise from that side. It seems that he has gone far. He travelled far.” Shocked, confused and angry, the Turks mounted their horses and went to see the fort of Anandpur. All of the forts were empty. Kwaja Mardood Ali, the slave of the Turks, spoke in anger: “go ahead and surround them! Make sure he doesn’t escape.” He called his Jathedaars, Sardars and generals and pushed them to go by swearing and yelling at them. He said to Bheem Chand: “why have you kept your army in the back? Get your Pahari army ready! Go and surround the Guru!” Wajeed Khan was awakened. He took his army and set off as well. Zerdast, the Sooba of Lahore, he took his army and ran to catch Sri Guru ji. A lot of armies came into the dark night. They were all wearing black clothes. They were going to catch the Guru, the sun. The darkness travelled with weapons in hand. Some were ahead and some were behind. Some ran on their horses and fell into the holes. Some were pushing each other or bumping into each other. When the horses came close to each other, they would kick one another. They all came to where the Singhs were.
When the Singhs heard the noise, they turned around and asked to see who it was: “who are you? Stay there! Don’t come close.” They recognised that they were enemies, not friends. Everyone raised their weapons. The rifles were fired. They fired from both sides. The Singhs figured out that the Paharis were deceiving them. They had broken their oaths and attacked the Singhs. This is the reason why Satguru ji was stopping them. When the Singhs understood this, they began to regret their actions. There was nothing that could be done now. They left the fort now. They only thing left for them to do now was to fight. Guru ji was ahead. Baba Ajeet Singh ji saw the enemy and stood back. He got really angry and started to shower his arrows upon the Turks. The army of the Mughals and Pathaans surrounded the Singhs. The rifles fired like popcorn. The fighting soldiers fought. The rifles fired in the dark, making flashes of light like fireflies shining in the Bhadron night. The Paleetas lit. They made flashes of light, like swarms of fireflies. They sounded like lightening. It was like trees on a mountain. The sounds could be heard for miles away when the bullets flew. The Turk army attacked but were afraid. They stayed far away.
6-32 Bhai Uday Singh ji Shaheedi
After crossing Kiratpur, everyone came to Nirmohgarh. The Mughals and Pathaans came to fight, breaking their promises. Guru ji wrote and gave a letter to his nephews, Baba Gulab Singh ji and Baba Shyam Singh ji, and said: “go to the Raja of Shaarmohr, Raja Medni Parkash, and give him this letter.” In the letter Guru ji wrote: “we are facing a conflict against the Turks. I am sending you my two nephews. Give them a village and serve them. They will live there.” The two grandsons of Baba Sooraj Mal ji took the letter and met the Raja. Raja Medni Parkash recognized Guru ji’s writing and gave them the Girvi Village. They both stayed in that place. Guru ji did not want the line of Baba Sooraj Mal ji to end as they were blessed and promised a big family along with prosperity by Guru Hargobind Sahib ji.
Guru Gobind Singh ji stood and noticed the commotion. They Paharis and Turks were fighting at the back. They attacked like a swarm of insects, making noise. The Singhs attacked with their rifles and advanced forward. Guru ji saw the rifles firing. The Singhs fired back. Baba Ajeet Singh ji stood in front, fighting the enemy. He killed many enemies. He stopped the enemy like a huge door of a big castle; like a mountain stopping a strong river. He fought fiercely. He looked at the enemy in the eye and fought. He did not fall back. He shot many arrows, pushing them back. The arrows went right through the enemy, like flying snakes. He made the enemy turn back. The ones that were hit, fell to the ground. Some suffered to death. Some got stuck on their stirrups and were dragged to death. The son of the Guru was a great warrior. He was strong and brave. He lived up to his name: “the undefeated one.” He saved his Vaheer from the enemy. He saved the unarmed people. He didn’t want anyone to be hurt. He stopped the enemy.
Guru ji moved slowly and looked back. He heard the bullets firing. He asked the Singhs: “who is fighting at the back (single-handedly stopping the enemy)? Who is the great warrior that is stopping them all? Go and find out who it is.” Where Gurduara Shahi Tibbi Sahib is today, that is where Guru ji had stopped and asked. He looked around and noticed that his eldest son was not with him. He figured out that it was Sahibzada Ajeet Singh ji who was single-handedly stopping the enemy from coming forward. A great battle started. A lot of noise could be heard. The warriors yelled out Jaikaras. Satguru ji stood with his Singhs. He noticed that his son had stopped the enemy and fought with courage. Guru ji said: “go and help him. Bring him back to the group.” Bhai Uday Singh ji, the son of Bhai Mani Singh ji and the brother of Bhai Bachittar Singh ji, the supreme commander, went with a lot of anger. He said: “give me permission to go where the battle is! I will go and help him. Where your son is fighting with radiance, I wish to go there.” Guru ji said: “go and fight. Kill the enemy. They are corrupt. Their courts will be destroyed. The Pahari Rajas are fools for leaving their Dharma. They have sinned gravely.” Bhai Uday Singh ji got ready and went to fight. He was really strong. He released sharp arrows and went to help the son of the Guru. Many great warriors were with him. He saw the place and gathered his Singhs. He bowed to Guru ji’s feet as he left and said: “this is my last Fateh. Please be by my side in the Parlok. Hold my arm in the afterlife and keep me in your sanctuary.” Guru ji patted Bhai Uday Singh ji on the back, knowing this was their last meeting on earth and said: “kill the enemy! Where I will stay in Sach Khand, I will keep you with me. Meditate on me and kill the enemy. Whatever desires you have, you will lead the Panth 4 times. You will rule the kingdom of earth and come back to me in Sach Khand. The Bhujhangis that fight with me, they will always be with me. You will be their leader and experience many types of joys.” Satguru ji gave many boons to Bhai Uday Singh ji and was really happy with him. Bhai Uday Singh ji bowed and left to fight, the great warrior. He came fast to where Baba Ajeet Singh ji was fighting, the strong warrior. Bhai Uday Singh ji shouted a loud Jaikara and pierced many chests with his arrows. Baba Ajeet Singhji was fighting fiercely and had the enemy stopped in its tracks. Bhai Uday Singh ji went in front of the son of the Guru and fought with great anger. He said: “go ahead and meet Guru ji. He is waiting for you. He will then go on ahead.” He said this many times: “go ahead!” The son of the Guru did not want to leave the battle. He looked at the enemy with anger. He didn’t want to go as the battle was fierce. He understood his father’s command and couldn’t refuse. He went towards Guru ji and continued to release arrows. Bhai Uday Singh ji fought.
Baba Jeewan Singh ji Rangreta was a great warrior. Sri Guru ji said to him: “go to Ajeet Singh ji.” Baba Jeewan Singh ji folded his hands with courage and said: “you knew exactly what I wanted! I wanted to go there and you commanded me. Give me strength that I may stop the enemy up to the river Sirsa. What happens after that is your will. The fight is fierce.” There was a stream called Sirsa there, Guru ji stood at its shores. Guru ji said to Baba Jeewan Singh ji: “if this is your wish, then you will come to this Nalla. You won’t be able to cross it. You will become a Shaheed here. You will come up to here without a doubt. Don’t delay. Go and fight in front. Kill the enemy.” Hearing Prabhoo ji’s words, Baba Jeewan Singh ji came to Baba Ajeet Singh ji. It was a dark night. They recognized each other by their Jaikaras. Baba Ajeet Singh ji moved forward while looking back. Baba Jeewan Singh ji met Baba Ajeet Singh ji and said: “please go ahead. He is waiting for you. He sent me to where Bhai Uday Singh ji has held up the enemy.” Baba Ajeet Singh ji heard the words of the warrior, as he had stopped the enemy. He moved forwards while looking back. He moved slowly, knowing Bhai Uday Singh ji was still fighting. The Vaheer that was in front of Satguru ji, the kids, the women and the elderly; they ran out of fear. Guru ji was protecting the Vaheer. Guru ji said: “let’s take them to Ropar as the battle is getting fierce in the back.”
When they all left Anandpur, 500 armed Singhs were with Guru ji. 50 were with Bhai Uday Singh ji, fighting along his side. 50 were with Baba Ajeet Singh ji. They all fired many bullets. The rest of the 400 were with Kalgidhar ji, stopping the enemy.
Listen to how Bhai Uday Singh ji killed the Paharis. The Paharis and Turks thought that Bhai Uday Singh ji was Guru Gobind Singh ji fighting as his arrows were flying like Guru ji’s arrows. The Paharis and Turks charged ahead, thinking that they would arrest or kill Guru ji and end the war. They charged with all their might. The army came like a tidal wave. Many rifles fired. Bullets flew. The warriors were falling. Bhai Uday Singh ji stood there. Many arrows of his pierced the enemy. One arrow went through 10. He challenged the men to fight. The Paharis and Turks fell in the dark, taking the arrows and bullets of the Singhs. The Singhs were less and the Turks were many. Many of the Turks and Paharis fell. Nobody could tell that the Singhs were less in numbers. The 52 Bir 64 Kaljognis came. They laughed and danced as they got food to eat. The Bhoots and Prayts danced along with the Vetals. The vultures shrieked and ate the flesh of the warriors. The rifles fired, looking like little fireflies as the Paleetas lit. It was like popcorn popping. The Singhs attained Shaheedi. The fairies of Heaven came to wed the martyred Singhs. Their bodies piled upon other bodies. The soldiers would trip over the dead and fall. A third would fall over them. They would get trampled by horses. They injured would yell in pain. Many were killed as they were trampled on by horses.
Zerdast Khan and Wajeed Khan yelled out loud in anger: “what happened? Have you lost your strength? The Singhs are only a few. You are so many. Catch the Guru standing there or kill him. You are in the Lakhs! You have lost your strength!” He yelled and swore at his Jathedaars standing near him: “don’t let the Guru fight and leave! Catch him! The Hazrat will reward you with great rewards if you catch the Guru!” He sent his Jathedaars. The army fired their guns and attacked.
The Singhs killed thousands. They didn’t move back. Many bullets were hit. The swords were out when the enemy came close. The Singhs fought in anger: “these sinners deceived us! They are fallen from the Dharma. They are blasphemous.” Many were killed. Many Singhs died and fell. A few Singhs remained. They were surrounded on the battlefield. Bhai Uday Singh ji got really angry. He fought fiercely. He didn’t move back. He released the arrows hard. The enemy surrounded the few Singhs. Bhai Uday Singh ji did not lose courage. He shot his arrows. When his arrows finished, he pulled out his sword and started killing the enemy. He cut many Turks and Paharis. The few Singhs that remained took out their swords. They were surrounded like a field surrounded by water; like the moon surrounded by stars. The bullets and arrows pierced the Singhs. They swung their swords and killed many Turks and Paharis as they fell. The Singhs attained Shaheedi and went to the Heavens. Bhai Uday Singh ji had killed many all by himself. Wherever he jumped, he killed the enemy. Nobody wanted to come near him. They tried fighting from far away. They shouted: “you catch him!” Nobody would go near him. They saw the angry Singh and stayed back. He had killed many Turks and Paharis. They laid dead on the field in huge numbers. By the radiance of the Guru, one Singh would fight and kill Lakhs of the enemy. Many rifles then fired. Many bullets hit Bhai Uday Singh ji in his body. His body was filled with blood. His blood all flowed out. His clothes were red with blood but he still did not faint. He kept swinging his sword. The Turks thought it was Guru Gobind Singh ji fighting. They were sure of it. He had killed many and injured many. The Turks charged yelling: “kill him.” As they would come near, they would stop, fearing him. They were injured as they came close. They were afraid and wanted to kill the Singh. Bhai Uday Singh ji fought and stopped the enemy army for 4 and a half hours. The women of the Devatas came on top of golden vessels and fought each other saying: “I will marry him! No, I will marry him! Only I deserve such a great warrior! He fought alone and killed Lakhs.” Thousands of guns were fired. Bhai Uday Singh ji’s body was pierced by every inch. When a bullet hit his forehead, the great warrior fell forward towards the enemy. He was so angry that he was biting his lips with his teeth. His body only fell after his Pranas left. Thus was the Shaheedi of Bhai Uday Singh ji, the supreme commander of the Khalsa Army. Seeing his battle, the 33 Crore Devatas were amazed and surprised. They all understood the radiance of the Guru. While doing the Simran of the Satguru, thinking of Guru Gobind Singh ji, Bhai Uday Singh ji’s Pranas had left his body.
6-33 Bhai Jeewan Singh ji Shaheedi
The strong warrior, Bhai Uday Singh ji along with the other Singhs fought the enemy. He went to the feet of the Guru in Sach Khand and was praised for his fighting. When the Singhs were all killed, the Paharis and Turks thought they had killed Guru ji and became very happy: “we killed the Guru! We didn’t let him go. He had bothered the Paharis for a long time. He fought us many times in the 30 years. He killed many in the Shah’s army as well. He killed a lot of men. We have been in the siege for many months. He had never left the battlefield defeated. He killed Kesri Chand and other great warriors. He killed Panday Khan, the great warrior. We used a lot of strength to kill the Guru. He roamed the Pahari area and killed many Rajas. His praise was spread throughout many lands. The biggest warriors feared him and didn’t come close to him. He always wanted to fight, all the time. He won every battle. He was ready to fight Lakhs, all alone. He never showed his back. The Hindus all called him, and saw him, as their Guru. The Muslims called him their Peer. He has been killed today, even though we lost a lot of men. This is how all battles end. He would continue to fight if he was still alive.” The corrupt Paharis discussed this but they didn’t know that this was Guru ji’s drama. “He used to release big and fierce arrows that went through horses. What would a human do in front of them? He stopped our army like a mountain stopping a river. Now the dam is broken.” The army of the Turks and Paharis went forward and thought their path was clear.
They all came to where Baba Ajeet Singh ji was fighting. The Sirsa River was overflowing due to the rain. The river was high. Many Singhs and horses drowned in the river’s current. Baba Ajeet Singh ji, the warrior, crossed the strong river on his horse. He kept releasing his arrows. He fought the enemy of the Malaich. There were too many. Baba ji released arrows. The enemy shot bullets. The ones who were hit with bullets, their bodies were pierced. Both sides shot bullets. They passed over the heads. Some hit the bodies. There was a lot of noise in the battle. They yelled out Jaikaras as they fought each other.
Bhai Jeevan Singh ji Rangreta came to the river as he fought. When the enemy came close, Baba Jeevan Singh ji fought with great bravery. Where Gurduara Parivar Vichora Sahib is today, that is where he fought. Whoever came close, Baba Jeevan Singh ji cut them in two. Many Paharis and Turks were killed by him. He stood there and stopped the enemy. The Singhs fired their guns. They poured gunpowder, added the bullets and rammed it with the ramrod. The barrel made noises as they did that. They would fire and pierce the enemy. The enemy would be discouraged from coming closer as the Singhs were really fast at preparing and firing their rifles. The Singhs with Baba Jeevan Singh ji killed many. It was a fierce battle with a lot of charges. They yelled: “kill them.” The enemy would back off when the Singhs fired. Some were killed and some moved back out of fear. Baba Jeevan Singh ji fought with bravery. The enemy rained bullets. Baba Jeevan Singh ji fought and advanced towards the river. Many Singhs had died. Some were hit with 5, 10 or 20 bullets. They kept preparing the rifles to fire. They used the ramrods to prepare the rifles. They fired at the enemy. The enemy would get hit and sway before falling, like a storm uprooting the huge trees. The enemy would come, thinking the Singhs were dead as their clothes were red; but they would get killed themselves. Thousands kept coming after the first ones died. They attacked from all four sides. The battle was fierce near the river. The water was strong in the river. The Paharis fired all at once. The Singhs with Baba Jeevan Singh ji all attained Shaheedi. Baba Jeevan Singh ji was killed in this attack as well. They all fell near the edge of the Sirsa. Some fell close and some away. They all went to Sach Khand to be with Guru ji. Some Singhs crossed the river on their horses. They crossed but didn’t stop fighting. The elder son of the Guru was brave. He stopped the enemy. He said the Fateh of Vahiguru as he came to meet his father. He said: “many Singhs were fighting back there. They all died who were with me. Bhai Uday Singh ji and Bhai Jeevan Singh ji are Shaheed. Some are injured and have no blood. I have brought them with me. Baba Uday Singh ji fought Lakhs, stopping the enemy. Lakhs of weapons were used on him.” Baba Ajeet Singh ji told his Guru father all this. “He stood there like a huge pillar. He shot many arrows upon arrows to kill the enemy. He fought for 4.5 hours. He killed thousands. He showed his strength and courage. He used the strength of his arms to kill many. They did not get a chance to ask for water. They thought he was you and so the enemy charged harder. Baba Uday Singh ji busted the enemy’s bodies. When his quiver was emptied from arrows, he pulled out his sword. The great warrior swung his swords and made the enemy run away. He jumped on the enemy like a cheetah on its prey. The enemy got together and fired all their guns at once. Many bullets pierced his body. He was hit in the forehead. His Dasam Dvar blasted and he finally attained Shaheedi. When the enemy came close to the river, we came there too. They attacked us hard. We shot arrows and bullets to kill many of the enemy. It was a strong charge but we held them back. Baba Jeevan Singh ji attained Shaheedi there as well. He was hit with many bullets. He was drenched in blood. He attained the highest status of warriors. The river became higher at that point. Many Singhs drowned with their horses. We came across with a lot of difficulty. Please listen to my request: the enemy is huge; Sri Prabhoo ji, let’s leave here quickly. Let’s be quick and leave.” When Guru ji heard this, he became angry and cursed the river: “Sirsa Nara Bado Gur Mara! You are cursed by the Guru (The Nihangs slap the river with their shoes and swear at the River as they cross it). You had to increase your flow today?” This curse is known by all, even today. The Vidhyadhar Granth (the collection of all the translations of the Vedas, Shastras, Darshans, Mahabharat and other compositions, weighing 9 Maunds) was also lost in the river. Many men, women and children drowned.
Bhai Aalam Singh ji was standing with Guru ji. He folded his hands and spoke with humility: “Baba Ajeet Singh ji has come. Whoever was back there have all died. We have no one to wait for. We should leave. You should make your horse run fast. We will be behind you to stop the enemy. You are the root of the Panth. If you come out of this surrounding you can make many more Singhs. If many like us die, you can make many more us. Don’t be upset. Sri Prabhoo ji, you would live on. Drink the Amrit and give it to others. Nothing will come to harm if the Singhs die.” Bhai Daya Singh ji and Bhai Sahib Singh ji folded their hands and said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, leave the battle. The whole Panth is thinking about this. You can make Lakhs of Singhs again. You are the root of all. Wherever you will tell us to fight, we will stay and fight. We will stop the enemy.” They said this over and over again. The master listened to his warriors. Mata Gujrii ji was on the chariot with the younger Sahibzadas. Guru ji told the charioteer to go quickly: “Stay somewhere for a night or two and keep going along the shore of the Sutlej.”
A Sikh from Delhi that was with the army, came to Guru ji all of a sudden. He bowed to Guru ji’s feet and said: “tell me what to do. I can do as you wish oh king of kings. You are the omnipotent Guru.” Guru ji said: “you came at a good time. There are two palanquins with the Vaheer. The two Matas. Take them to Ropar. Spend the night at the home of a Sikh. There’s no need to be afraid, nobody will be able to see you.” Baba Deep Singh ji and Bhai Mani Singh ji went with the Matas. The Sikh said while folding his hands: “my relatives there. I will take them to their home. Please be by my side. I will go there before morning with the Matas. We will go to Delhi in a few days. You are the complete Guru. I am your Sikh. I am not afraid. Protect me. You are the omnipotent one.” The Sikh obeyed and went to the Vaheer. He found Mata Sundri ji and Mata Sahib Deva ji. He saw their palanquins and bowed to the Matas. He said: “Mata ji, don’t stay here. Let’s go to Ropar before morning. There’s a big battle in the back. The enemy sinned and deceived us. They all attacked in great numbers. Sri Prabhoo ji commanded me to take you to the home of my relatives. We will be safe from the army there. We will go to my home in Delhi and stay there after. Many from your Sangat are there in Delhi. They will set the Pangat and serve you morning and night. We will find Guru ji later and go to him after. Right now, there’s a big battle happening.” Baba Deep Singh ji and Bhai Mani Singh along with the Matas came to Damdama Sahib after with the Delhi Sikhs. The Sikh took the Matas to the home of his relatives. They reached before morning. They stayed one night in Ropar and went to Delhi the following day. They went to Delhi reaching in a few days. Nobody knew about this. The enemy could not see. The Guru put dust into the enemy’s eyes.
Sri Mata Goojri ji along with the two younger grandsons rode fast on her chariot. As the two mothers went, I have told that history. The rest of the Vaheer went to Ropar. The enemy attacked from the back. Everybody went their own way when the enemy attacked. The enemy looted the carts. Many were killed. The Singhs said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, let’s leave from here. We fold our hands to you. We will stop the enemy and you should leave. The enemy is in the Lakhs. They want to kill you. You shouldn’t get stuck here. Don’t fight them. Let us fight. The whole Panth is telling you to leave, why aren’t you going? Ride fast and go!” The warrior, Sri Guru ji, thought about this and knew the command of Akaal Purakh. He rode his horse fast and went to Ropar. Most of the Singhs stayed and fought. They fired bullets to stop the enemy. The night passed and it was almost morning. About 35 Warrior Singhs were with Guru ji at that time.
Narration by Giani Sher Singh ji: (At around 4:30 am, Guru ji and the 35 Singhs came to a village named Malikpur, 4 miles away from Ropar. The village belonged to the Rangars. As the Singhs came, the Rangars fired bullets upon them. Bhai Bachittar Singh ji was hit with two bullets. He was injured. Baba Ajeet Singh ji carried Bhai Bachittar Singh ji on his horse. Guru ji had come to where Bhatta Sahib is today. When his horse’s foot touched the brick kiln (Bhatta), it cooled down. The owner of the Bhatta was Bhai Nihang Khan Pathaan. He had faith in Guru ji. His home was close by. His servants told him that Guru ji’s horse cooled the Bhatta down. He wanted Guru ji to come to his home. As Guru ji came into his home, Bhai Nihang Khan ji said: “this home is yours Guru ji. Stay here with your Singhs. I will fight first and die, then they can face you.” Guru ji looked at Bhai Nihang Khan ji with love and said: “I don’t want to put you in harm’s way. The enemy is huge. They’ll be here in a few hours. We will leave. We are trying to tire the enemy out. We will go on ahead. One of my Singhs is injured. Keep him here.” Bhai Bachittar Singh ji was kept at Bhai Nihang Khan ji’s home as Guru ji and the Singhs left. The Pathaans of the area found out that Guru ji had come to Nihang Khan ji’s home. As the 400 Pathaans came to check, Bhai Nihang Khan ji had his daughter tend to the wounded Bhai Bachittar Singh ji. When the Pathaans checked the home, they found no one. They wanted to go into the room where Bhai Bachittar Singh ji was rested. Bhai Nihang Khan ji said: “my daughter and ill son-in-law are in this room.” The Pathaans honored the Khan’s daughter’s privacy and left without checking the room. When Bhai Nihang Khan ji’s daughter heard this, she began seeing herself as Bhai Bachittar Singh ji’s wife. Bhai Bachittar Singh ji died 2 days later. Bhai Nihang Khan ji’s daughter, Bibi Mumtaaz ji, never married and remained as Bhai Bachittar Singh ji’s widow. She did Tapasya for the rest of her life. Her home is now a Gurduara, Gurduara Mumtazgarh Sahib. She lived till she was 125 years old. Bhai Bagga Singh ji and Bhai Gursa Singh ji came to this place after Bhai Bachittar Singh ji died as they had been searching for Guru ji. They wanted to know where Guru ji was. Bhai Nihang Khan ji showed the two Singhs Bhai Bachittar Singh ji’s body and asked them to cremate his body according to the Guru’s traditions. Bhai Bagga Singh ji and Bhai Gursa Singh ji cremated Bhai Bachittar Singh ji’s body where Shaheed Ganj Bhai Bachittar Singh ji is today.)
The night before: the other Singhs stayed and fought the enemy. They fired bullets. Thousands were dead. Some were injured in deformed ways. Many dead horses lay on the ground. Many horses were without riders. Many proud warriors lay in pieces on the ground. Singhs fired bullets and never missed their target by Guru ji’s boon. The battle was fierce. Many men and horses died. Every bullet busted heads, bodies, arms and legs. How much can I write? Many Paharis and Turks were killed. The 500 Singhs became Shaheeds. 5 injured Singhs survive and will come to Chamkaur later on. The sun came up. It was 7 am. The darkness was gone. The world can be seen. The blood was drenching from the 5 remaining Singhs. They started to look for Guru ji. Thousands enemy were killed. From Anandpur to Ropar, there were thousands of dead bodies. Vultures and scavengers ate the flesh. For 20 Kos there were dead bodies. Horses, elephants and men were dead. The crows cawed and the vultures shrieked eating the flesh. Lakhs of armies were chasing, killing as they came. The soldiers lay dead like they were sleeping. Hundreds of Singhs died. Many Turks and Paharis died. When the sun came up, that’s when they knew how many died.
6-34 Battle in Chamkaur Takes Shape
The Vaheer of Guru ji: with the inhabitants of Anandpur, men, women, children, elders, merchants, tradesmen etc. they all scattered due to the attack of the Turks and Paharis. Many had drowned in the Sirsa while crossing it during the dark and stormy night. Some were looted and killed. Some survived. Some fought and died.
Guru ji headed south from Ropar. The village named Boor Majra, Guru ji came there after leaving Bhai Bachittar Singh ji. He stopped his horse and said to Bhai Aalam Singh ji: “go get water.” Bhai Aalam Singh ji went to the well and took water by roping a Sarblo Garrwa. He gave the water to Guru ji. Guru ji washed his face and gargled with the water. He drank some of the clean water. The other Singhs wished to drink water as well. They went to the well, washed up and drank some water. They all headed south from there. From Delhi, a man came to Guru ji. He was going towards the Turks to Anandpur. He met Guru ji and bowed to him. The Singhs asked: “who are you and where are you going so quickly? You are somebody with status. Who are you?” The person from Delhi said: “I am going to the Turk army in Anandpur. I am a messenger. Khwaja Mardood had called for a bigger army to catch the Guru. 1,000,000 mounted soldiers are coming from Delhi to march upon the Guru. I was going to tell the Khwaja this. The army is close by. I was going to tell them that the army is huge. Many Nishans and many Nagaras they have. It is like a tsunami in the ocean.” Sri Satguru ji heard the news of the Turks from a Turk. He stopped his horse and scoped with his powerful divine vision in all 4 directions. He thought of the lakhs of soldiers they had already fought and sensed the 1,000,000 more coming. The brave soldier Satguru thought to himself with a new eagerness: “a new army is coming to fight us! If we don’t fight them, it won’t feel good. If we ignore them, the enemy would think we can’t fight. We should get a Qila and wage a war.” In this way Sri Prabhoo ji wished to fight a fierce battle, unlike any other battle fought in the history of humankind.
Where the village of Chamkaur was, it was situated on a higher elevation. Guru ji had been there on his way to Kurukshetra some years ago. He thought to himself: “Chamkaur is high. Let’s go there and wage a fierce war. Let’s destroy the huge army of Turks. Let’s show them what we can do and also see what they can do!” Guru ji was determined: “it is not good to leave the battle. Let’s see how the Malaich fight. The Dharma of the Hindu Paharis has been destroyed. The Turks have lost their honour, their Imaan. Their actions have destroyed their radiance. We will pull their roots out now.” After deciding this, the Prabhoo changed his direction from the south to Chamkaur, turning his horse around. He saw the village on the higher elevation. There was no other higher area to set up a Morcha. The Omnipotent Guru could do what he wanted to do. He made his own setting and situation to fulfill the tasks he came for. The 35 Singhs and 2 Sahibzadas followed him.
They all came to the southern area of Chamkaur. There was a garden there they all came to. They set up a camp there. The mules that carried the arrows, they were tied up in the garden. The horses were tied up. They were saddled up still. The Singhs got off their horses and sat down at a few distances from each other. The horses were kept away from each other, to avoid bumping into each other. The Singhs were eager and motivated to fight. Their moustaches were up. Guru ji’s radiance was hot and bright like the noon sun. It was hard to look at Guru ji’s face directly. He was really radiant. The Singhs couldn’t stay near Guru ji at that time. They couldn’t even talk to him. His Darshan was too bright to look at. Guru ji focussed internally at that time, one with the Parmeshwar. He was about to fulfill the ultimate task, the show of the acts of the bravest of warriors the world had yet to see. He was about to show the highest level of Brahmgyaan to the world. His golden jewellery was shining bright. The hoops in his ears, the golden karas in his wrists, the pearl necklace around his neck, the Jigha with precious gems, the swaying Kalgi looked radiant and bright. The Navratan (9 gems) on his arms looked like the 9 planets. His green bow was embellished with golden goshas. It was wide and dense. It was thick. The pull force was 9 Tonkas. He was in Bir Rass. The Turks were about to be destroyed. The bowstring was strung high and tight. His quiver had the Faulaadi Khappra arrows that had thick backings. One arrow had 1 Tola of gold on it. The feathers on the backs of the arrows were thick. In his Gatra was a Chanderhans with a golden hilt. It had diamonds in it. He took 5 arrows and put them into the ground, point first. He put his hands on the arrows and rested his chin on them. He sat on a rock under a tree. He had been fighting the enemy all night long. 500 of his Singhs had become Shaheeds. Only 5 Singhs survived who finally came to the garden to meet Guru ji. The 5 Singhs were drenched in blood. They were injured. They came there by the strength of Guru ji. They came through the enemy with courage. They came and bowed to Guru ji and said the Fateh of Vahiguru. They said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, listen, the Singhs all fought with bravery. Bhai Uday Singh ji fought with 50 Singhs. He killed thousands of sinners. He fought for 4.5 hours and stopped the foolish Paharis. Baba Ajeet Singh ji fought and slowly came to you. We saw that in the span of 20 Kos; there were only dead bodies. Thousands of Turks, Paharis and horses lay there. The Khalsa fought with the Paharis and Turks. There is a lot of blood. The earth is blook like red carpet is laid there. The warriors look like they’re sleeping. The Khalsa fought bravely. The 5 of us came fighting as we came to you. The Turks and Paharis are in the thousands. They are coming behind us. We met a person on the way who said: “the Shah is sending 1,000,000 men by the calling of Kwaja Mardood. They are coming to catch the Satguru. There are lines and lines of regiments.” The Paharis and Turks have cooked up a plan of deception. Their oaths aren’t worth a grain of rye. You were right in telling us this but we didn’t listen to you. We are being faced from both sides: the Turk and Pahari army on the one side; the new army from Delhi on the other. They are coming at us like huge tsunamis in the ocean. They will be here in a little while. You can make a plan as you do. They will be here in a few hours. We won’t be able to do anything later. Auranga told his army: “go close to the Guru and catch him. If you see him on the way then arrest him.” We didn’t listen to you; not to leave Anandpur. Now death is close to us. Everyone that left Anandpur has died. Only the 40 of us survive. The Paharis and Nauranga are corrupt liars. They swore false oaths. You are omnipotent and capable in every way. You can do as you wish. We are limited beings (we were dismayed by hunger and the situation). We don’t know your play. You know the past, present and future.” Kalgidhar ji heard this and thought to himself: “Nauranga Shah is corrupt. The Paharis conspired with him to set this deception up.” Guru ji looked towards the Singhs and said: “go to the village and see the Kachi Ghari you see at the top of the hill. It is Kachi with the Ataris seen at the top. It looks two-storied. The owner of the Haveli, the Panch of the village; bring him so I can speak to him.”
Five Singhs got up and went into the village. They saw the Chaudhary sitting in the square of the village among other people of the village. The Singhs went there and said: “who is the Zamidhaar of the village? Guru ji is calling for you. He has arrived in the garden, the Compassionate One, and wishes to speak to you. Don’t dely. Come quick.” The Chaudhary heard Guru ji’s name and got scared. The farmers tried to ignore the Singhs. The Chaudhary spoke with hesitation: “I have no money or gift to give him right now and one should never go empty-handed to meet saints.”
One of the Singhs quickly came back and said to Guru ji: “he says he has no gift to give you. He doesn’t want to come see you empty-handed. Looks like he’s trying to avoid you.” Bhai Daya Singh ji took out 5 golden coins from his pocket and told the Singh: “give this to him and tell him to come and bow to Guru ji.” The Singh gave the 5 Dinars to the Chaudhary. The Chaudhary came to the garden and did Guru ji’s Darshan. He placed the 5 Dinars in front of Guru ji and bowed to his feet. He had a lot of doubts in his mind. He sat down. He thought Guru ji was going to take his house from him. He was trying to think of excuses in response. Prabhoo ji asked the Chaudhary how he was doing with patience. The Chaudhary said he was well. Satguru ji said: “the Qila that you have, show it to me. How is it made? How are the doors?” The Jaat Chaudhary heard this and lost his courage. He didn’t know how to answer. He thought to himself: “Lakhs of enemies are after him.” He spoke to deceive: “Maharaj, it is not a Qila. It is a small home to live in. It has no Burj nor Morcha to fight from. The door is not strong. The trench around it is not deep. There is no trench. The small Atari you see, you can’t fight from it. I don’t live alone. Three other brothers of mine live with me. We have divided the rooms up among us. The women live in the Pardah. They all live there. They don’t leave the home. Otherwise, I would have taken you to my home. There’s nothing to hide from you. It is a common home of us brothers. We don’t let any other men into the home. This is the tradition of our elders. This is our Nem given to us by our elders. If it was good to fight from, then there would be nothing to worry about. There is nobody better than you that we would keep it for.” The Satguru is the wisest of the wise. He is the treasure of wisdom. He saw the lie the Chaudhary was saying. Guru ji got up and had the Singhs grab the Chaudhary Jaat. The Singhs grabbed the Chaudhary by the arms. He tried to get away but couldn’t overpower the Singhs. Everyone mounted their horses and came to the village. They came to the Ghari in a minute.
On the way, they saw a weak Jaat. Prabhoo ji noticed that he was the Chaudhary’s brother. He said to him: “where is the main gate of the Ghari? Open it for us. We wish to see it. Tell us where all the windows and doors are.” The Jaat folded his hands and said: “listen Prabhoo ji, I am the half owner of this Qila. I am poor and can’t afford a living. This person is my brother. He is rich. I only have two rooms in the Ghari. He has all of it. If you give me some money, I will give you this Ghari. If my brother doesn’t open the door, they have it locked from the inside; on my side, there is a small door, you can go inside through there. See if you like it. You can have it and do what you like with it.” Sri Prabhoo ji heard this and took out 50 golden coins from his bag. He gave it to the weak and poor Zamidhaar. He was happy with the money. Guru ji and the Singhs went towards the door. The other doors were guarded and locked up. The family had locked the doors but the weak Jaat’s door was open. The Singhs pushed through. The family wouldn’t open the other doors. The Singhs shouted: “listen all, we have the owner Jatt in our custody. We will kill him.” The family said: “you can catch him or kill him. We won’t open the door. You will loot the whole village if we let you in. Lakhs of armies are your enemies. Our homes will be destroyed.” The weak Jaat came and took the Singhs towards his portion. There was a window there. He had it opened and went in first. Guru ji then followed in. The horse was left outside. 5 Singhs went in after, leaving their horses. They came into the Ghari and had the main gate opened. They scolded the ones closing the door and made them run away. The Singhs then came in with all their horses in the Ghari. The family was kicked out of the Ghari. The women and children were kicked out. They were given the scare of war. The weapons, arrows, bullets and other items of war loaded on the mules were brought in. The Ghari was made secure from all sides. The Morchas was set. The Ataris were guarded. They brought what they needed inside. Guru ji and the Singhs sat inside, ready for battle.
6-35 Keeping Guard in Chamkaur
Sri Satguru ji was in the Ghari of Chamkaur and prepared the guard. The enemy was looking for Guru ji, coming from Anandpur. Some said: “Guru ji was killed fighting the Paharis and Turks the few nights before. He released many arrows and fought for 4.5 hours. He fought and didn’t move back. He killed thousands of our people.” Some said: “no, he left. The horse tracks show that he escaped. He is very powerful and can never be killed on the battlefield. He can perform miracles. We fought in the dark and couldn’t tell anything, who died and who survived. Thousands of men and horses died in the fierce battle.” They all talked among themselves but couldn’t figure out where Guru ji went. The Paharis and Soobas tried to figure out where to go. They tried asking people coming and going, of Guru ji’s whereabouts. The Turks and Paharis lost a lot of men that night. The Soobas and Rajas were tired from fighting. They washed up and saw the damage to their armies. The army that was in Anandpur, they were tired. They fought with the Singhs and Guru ji. The fools banged their heads and couldn’t figure out what had happened.
The 1,000,000 soldiers that departed from Delhi, they got new of where Guru ji was: “he fought in Anandpur and left. The battle was fierce. The Guru fought with bravery. He killed many. He is on a high hill in Chamkaur.” One of the Jaats who owned the Ghari told the army where Guru ji was. They wanted to clear their own name and told on Guru ji: “the Guru and his Singhs took our home. They punished us and took our home. They are inside and set up their Morchas. Only 40 or 50 are with him. The others have all died that were with him before. They kicked our women and children out. They took over our place. They made it into a Qila. They can’t fight form it. It has no Morchas, no trenches and the doors are weak. The Guru was just travelling on his way and decided to take our home from us. He came in and kicked us out.” When the Turks heard this, they played their Nagaras and made their horses ride. They were near Marinda. They ran towards Chamkaur. A lot of dust flew to the sky, making it dark. The sun was covered. One couldn’t see their own hand. The army came towards Chamkaur like a tsunami in the ocean.
The Sardars of the Turk Army, I will tell you their names. Listen to their names: Nahar Khan, Gairat Khan, Faulaad Khan, Ismail Khan, Bahadhur Khan, Asmaan Khan, Sultan Khan, Jahaan Khan; there were so many. Meea Khan, Bhooray Khan, Said Khan, Nooray Khan, Phool Khan, Gul Khan, Hussain Khan, Bali Beg Mughal, came holding their reins. Khaleel Khan, Mirza Hayat Beg, Syed Mahmood Ali came with eagerness. Jaafer Beg came to destroy the Kafirs who themselves swore false oaths on the Koran. Some were dark-skinned with huge lips. Some were ugly. Some were brown skinned. They were big warriors who fought many battles. Some were from Lebanon. Some spoke Pashto and some spoke Uzbek. Some where heavy and from Kabul and Kandahar. Some were Daozey. Some were from Africa, Peshawar, Balak, Bukhara, Russia, Rome, Ghazni, Dhattay, Bhakhri, Iran, Arab and Kashmir. They all spoke different languages and couldn’t even understand each other. When 1,000,000 soldiers came, Khwaja Mardood and others got to know this: “Guru ji is in Chamkaur and set up a Morcha. The other army is coming from Delhi and will surround him. We should go too. Guru ji didn’t die in the battle the night before. He went on ahead.” They had all been looking around for Guru ji like lost cows. They all made their horses run after getting news. Wajeed Khan took his army along with Zabardast Khan and Bheem Chand. The Sooba of Lahore, Zerdast (Zabbardast) Khan took his whole army. The 22 Pahari Rajas took their whole armies. The Meeya Ranas, what can I say about their powers? They caused this commotion and headed to Chamkaur. Thousands of Rangars, Gujjars and thugs went. Many Nagaras sounded. There was a lot of noise. They surrounded Chamkaur. There was no light on the earth nor in the sky. There was a huge army surrounding the Chamkaur Ghari. There was darkness everywhere. The dust flew up from the horse steps. There was so much noise, one could not hear their own words. Nothing could be seen. They all wanted to catch Guru ji and finish the huge battle. There was noise all around. They wanted to charge. The soldiers were huge and strong. They ran towards Chamkaur. They all came like a swarm of insects. They surrounded the Ghari of Chamkaur. The earth or sky couldn’t be recognized. There were many horses, elephants, cannons and soldiers. The directions couldn’t be found. There were soldiers everywhere. It was like the black clouds thundering there way around. The Nagaras sounded like thunder. The Chamkaur Ghari was like the Mandrachal Parvat in the middle of the ocean, waiting to be churned. The army was like the ocean all around it. Nobody could count how many men there were. Who had the wisdom to count? There were millions. People saw this and were shocked at how the Turks came with so much anger and strength just to catch Guru ji. Many elephants had multi-coloured flags. The bells rang around their necks. The flags waving in the wind looked like wings on mountains. Many Nagaras sounded like thunder. The horses looked like alligators in the water. The spear, saangs, Tomars, swords, Khandas and weapons looked like the waves in the oceans. The Paleetas firing were like the Barwa Agni of the ocean. The Qila of Chamkaur was like a ship which the ocean wanted to sink but the captain of the ship was Guru Gobind Singh ji. It could never be sunk. Baba Jujhar Singh ji, Baba Ajeet Singh ji, Bhai Daya Singh ji and the Aad Panch Singhs stood with courage and patience. The 5 Muktay Singhs along with Bhai Maan Singh ji, Bhai Dyaan Singh ji, Bhai Daan Singh ji, Bhai Dhanna Singh ji, Bhai Aalam Singh ji, Bhai Shyaam Singh ji, Bhai Mohar Singh ji, Bhai Bir Singh ji, Bhai Sukha Singh ji, Bhai Sant Singh ji, Bhai Kotha Singh ji Rangreta, Bhai Madan Singh ji Ravidasi were all the best warriors. They were all ready to fight and saw the Lakhs of armies.
Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji spoke: “listen to my words oh Khalsa: I tried to stop all of you and even showed you the proof that the enemy was full of lies and deception. I told you not to trust them. I showed you the enemy’s greed. I kept showing you and teaching you this. You did not listen to me. I was showing the advantages of staying in Anandpur in peace and the pain of leaving. I told you that death would come if you came out. I kept convincing you to stay but you were upset with me. I saved you from death but you became stubborn like little children. You forced me to leave. You didn’t obey me and didn’t see the death standing in front of you. I showed you the deception but you were ready to write a Bidhava for me. They wrote what you wanted them to write but they broke their oaths. You didn’t recognize their deception. You became naïve and didn’t know what was good for you. I tried to tell you but you became stubborn and wanted to leave the fort. They swore oaths on the Koran and the Rasool but look how the lowlifes sent their armies after us. I left Anandpur at the Khalsa’s saying. Now we are stuck in this situation. Who will help us now? These Pahari Rajas swore on the cow. They sent the Thakur in a plate with a Brahmin. They sent the leader of the Malaich, Khwaja Mardood. He lost his Imaan and showed his injured honour. Now, the politics of Saam (surrendering), Daam (offering money), and Bhed (causing division) will not work. We will now use Dhand (punishment) since the enemy has come in millions to fight. Don’t die like coward vultures now by the hands of the enemy. Let’s fight hard like we have been doing in the past. We are the Kshatriyas. We are warriors. The lowlife sinner, Aurangzeb, has deceived us. The Panth will take revenge. Their roots will be pulled. Whatever effort you do now to kill the enemy, that is how many kingdoms you will receive in your births. Your desires will be fulfilled plus you will come and be One with me. You will be in my presence forever. I will erase the fate that Brahma has written for you and give you what you desire. The rules of the Karma will not apply to you. You will come to me and be One with me in Sach Khand. There is no Tapp like war. There is no Yagna, Pooja or Tapasya like fighting a battle for a half an hour. You will be successful in both Loks in a half hour of battle.”
8 Singhs were posted in each direction, 32 Singhs kept guard of all 4 directions with weapons in hand. Bhai Kotha Singh ji and Bhai Madan Singh ji were posted at the door. The Singhs said: “what about the bullets and gunpowder?” Guru ji said: “just stand there, aim at the enemy and keep pulling the trigger. The Shaheeds will take care of the rest. You won’t need to load your rifles. Don’t load it with bullets or gunpowder. The bullets will fire by themselves. Don’t doubt this.” The two sons of Guru ji (Baba Ajeet Singh ji and Baba Jujhar Singh ji), Bhai Daya Singh ji and Bhai Sant Singh ji; Guru ji took them along and went to sit in the Atari at the top. The 5 of them held their bows and loaded their arrows. Bhai Aalam Mrigendra (Singh) ji and Bhai Maan Singh ji supervised everyone and walked around to keep updates from all sides. They walked all around 4 directions to manage the Morcha. Bhai Maan Singh ji was Bhai Mani Singh ji’s brother. Bhai Aalam Singh ji Nachna was a cousin of Bhai Mani Singh ji. Bhai Aalam Singh ji was Guru ji’s personal attendant, his Garwahi. He had hunted many lions as he was an excellent marksman. All of the Singhs gave their heads to Guru ji: “we will kill the Malaich and become Shaheeds.” The Singhs took water from the well and gathered all the flour and food they could. They cooked food and ate it along with having Shaheedi Degh. They were ready to fight. They were filled with Bir Rass. Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji’s eyes were red with Bir Rass. He was angry at the enemy for their deception. His face was red as he looked at the enemy. The enemy came like a swarm of insects. 1,000,000 came from Delhi. The Paharis and Turks came from Anandpur. The villagers opened their animals and ran away from Chamkaur. They left their homes and hid far away. Some met the officers and asked for mercy. They shouted and said they were innocent and not with the Guru. When the army came from all 4 sides, they shouted: “kill them!” When the army came near into the village, the warriors from inside the Ghari started to fire their bullets. The arrows and bullets rained from both sides. This was the morning of 8 Poh, 1704 CE.
