6-1 Manglacharan/ The Masands go to Mata ji
Ik Oankaar Satgur Prasaad
Sri Vahiguru ji ki Fateh
Sri Guru ji’s feet are like the lotus. They are the ship that take you across the sea of troubles and obstacles. I meditate on those feet.
Sri Guru Nanak ji, Guru Angad ji, the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eight, and nineth forms are beyond description. Guru Gobind Singh ji is the tenth Prabhoo who has taken an Avatar to save the world. He has himself had his Katha written. I was just an excuse. He saw me as his servant and made me write this Katha. How can a human have the strength to gather such a great amount of history to write this Granth? He has completed all of my wishes and gave me joy in this world. I have faith that he will cut my problems in the Parlok.
The Satguru gave wisdom that blessed the Singhs, who loved the Guru, they gave their lives for the Guru. The Pahari Rajas sent their ambassadors to lie to the Delhi officers. They took 125,000 soldiers to Delhi to speak to the Umraavs.
Saida Khan Pathaan came who wanted to fight Guru ji. His army first came to Thanesar. The Turks were all in attention and ready to fight.
The Masands that were kicked out by Guru ji, who took money from the Sangat, sitting down, Guru ji said: “they are not my Masands. They are the Rakshishes for the Sikhs.” Some Masands came to Guru ji and said: “only a few committed sins. Why do we all have to suffer? Please forgive us. We are yours. Be compassionate towards us. If we go to the homes of Sikhs, we will take whatever they give us. You killed all of us because of one or two. We will obey your words from now on.” Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “The Sikhs have faith. It is Kaliyuga. Listen, it will be hard to be Sikhs. There is no shortage of money in the Guru’s home. Don’t go to any Sikh’s home without being called for.” Guru ji gave his command and the Masands were kicked out. They became poor. They didn’t get anything.
The Masands came to Mata Gujri ji and said many things. They made many requests: “listen Mata ji, it has always been the tradition in the Guru’s home that the tasks of the Guru’s home were done by us. Since we have been stopped, the tasks of the Guru’s home are deteriorating as there is no income coming to the Guru’s home. We used to collect the money. How will the transactions occur?” They said many things to Mata ji and spoke of their pains.
One day, Mata ji came to the Crown of the Sodhis. She said: “son, listen to me: how will the worldly tasks be fulfilled? How will the Langar of the Singhs continue? You stopped the income from coming. The Sikhs are given Siropas. They are expensive. How will we give them? There are many tasks that can’t be done now. How will they all happen without money? You stopped all of the Masands.” Guru ji heard Mata ji’s words and figured out that Mata ji was manipulated by the Masands to speak such words. Guru ji got really angry and said: “you are the daughter of Kshatriyas. You are speaking of destruction. You have greed for money. When I buried the money in the river, you took 2 Lakhs and hid it. Isn’t that money good for Langar for the Sikhs? You kept that money. The Turks that are our enemies, they will consume that money that you kept (that is the money that Gangoo will steal. Jaani Khan and Maani Khan took that money from Gangoo). The Sikhs are my beloved. Oh Sikhs loot and eat whatever you can. The family of the Satguru is “hungry.” Take whatever you can and eat it.” The Singhs heard this and got scared. They folded their hands and made a request: “your words are the arrows of Ram. They are never a miss. Please be compassionate and protect everyone. Say good words for all.” Sri Guru ji then said: “Baba Nanak ji is the supreme Guru in this world. He said: “I will wear 10 forms.” What I have said is what will happen. The money Mata ji has kept won’t be consumed by any one of us. Nobody can go against the will of Parmeshwar.” Mata ji heard this and went quiet. After a while, she said: “I wanted to do good but I ended up doing bad. You got angry hearing my words. You were supposed to give a boon but ended up giving a curse. It was like fire coming out while rubbing sandalwood. I came to you thinking you are my son and will listen to me but you have to see the good for all. Forgive everyone and give them greatness. The Sikh servants are your family. Say things that are joyful to all.” Guru ji said: “listen Mata ji, have faith on the Khalsa. Give the money to them. The Khalsa is good in Rehit, word and consumption. My light is within the Khalsa. The Khalsa will only do good. The world’s kingdom will be under the Khalsa.” Mata ji heard this and went to her home. She had regret in her heart.
She sat down and then Sikhs came to meet her. They talked about what happened. The Masands said: “Guru ji has a harsh personality. He has no attachment towards anyone. Whatever he says, is never fruitless. It gives fruit right away, whether joyful or painful. Nobody can reverse his words. Nobody can say anything in front of him. Only you could say anything to him but he got angry at you too and cursed the family of the Guru.” Mata Gujri ji then said: “he has been stubborn since childhood. Once he was playing in the water with other kids, throwing water at each other. Gulab Singh and Shyam Singh were playing too with joy. He was wearing golden bracelets with other expensive jewellery. His bracelets were worth Lakhs. One of his bracelets fell and he didn’t care about it. He wore his dry clothes later and looked at his wrist. The servants said: “you lost one bracelet.” He didn’t say anything and came to me. When I saw his empty wrist, I said: “where is your bracelet?” I got angry. We came to the river to look for the bracelet. We couldn’t find it. I got angry and said: “why don’t you tell me where you threw it? It was a rare and expensive bracelet. You didn’t take care of it and lost it in the water. You didn’t take care of it and now you stay quiet and not tell me where you lost it. That bracelet was expensive. What’s wrong with your wisdom?” I got angry but he stayed quiet. He took off his other bracelet in front of everyone and threw it into the river. He threw it far. It flowed into the current of the Sutlej. Everyone saw this and were shocked. I said: “why did you throw the other one? It was worth thousands! You threw it like it was a Kodi.” I said a lot but he threw both bracelets of Jarow (craft on jewellery) away. Many ferrymen tried to find them. Many others were sent too. Nobody found them. Since he was young, he didn’t care for money. He’s always been like that. He doesn’t care to gather money. Now he has stopped the Masands who used to bring Lakhs of money. They used to go to faraway lands, finding the homes of Sikhs. They would give them wisdom and bring money from them. Now that they have been stopped, from where will the money come from? How will the expenses of the Guru’s home run now? I went to him, thinking about all this but he gave the family a curse. Parmeshwar will do good everywhere. I tried to tell him.” The Masands met Mata ji and they realized the situation was bad for them. It was out of their hands. There was nothing they could do. They went quiet. It was evening and the sun had set.
6-2 Saida Khan comes to Fight
After eating, everyone went to sleep. One Sikh left from Thanashwer and wanted to give news to Guru ji. The Sikh came to Anandpur. There was a guard standing at the main gate. The Sikh who came from Thanashwer met the guard and said: “Saida Khan Pathaan has brought his army with him. He has set up camp at Thanashwer. When I heard that his army was on its way to fight Guru ji from a spy from the army, I left the city and came this way. I came here as fast as I could. I wanted to tell Guru ji everything I heard. I want him to be ready to fight. The Mughals and Pathaans are more than 125,000 in numbers. They have a lot of ammunition to fight. It will be a big battle. They will be here by tomorrow. I want to give Guru ji this news. I came quickly.”
Satguru ji had just bathed, as it was Amritvela. He came into the Divaan and got news of Saida Khan’s army. The whole Khalsa was present in the court. Sri Kalgidhar ji said: “the army of the Singhs, they are 500. Most of the Singhs had taken holidays and went to their own homes. They won’t be able to come to battle by the time it starts. The enemy is 125,000 in numbers. The Pahari Rajas have instigated them to come. The armies of the Rajas will surely come too. There will be too many of them. If you are ready to fight them, tell me.” The full gathering of the Khalsa heard this and said: “you are the cause and the effect.”
The sun came up and the Bir Rass grew within the Singhs. They gathered their weapons and clothes. They saddled their horses right away. It was morning and the Turks arrived, playing Nagaras. The Singhs heard the drums. When the battle was ready to fight, Maymoo Khan Pathaan was a worker of Guru ji and a great warrior. He saw that it was time for war and became angry. He came to Prabhoo ji and said: “Paatshaah, the reason for which you kept me with you, the 100 men regiment you gave me, you made me their general. I have eaten your salt. It is time for you to see my bravery.” Kalgidhar ji was happy to hear this. Guru ji called for an excellent bow and gave it to Maymoo Khan. Guru ji said: “it’s time to kill your own kind. Whoever comes in front, fight them.” There was another Umraav, Said Beg, who had his camp looted; he came to Guru ji as well. He stood in front of Guru ji. Satguru ji looked at him. Said Beg was a Sikh from his previous birth. He met Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji and walked the righteous path. Guru ji gave Said Beg weapons as well. He was ready to fight the great battle. Guru ji saw him as his own Sikh and loved him. Guru ji put his hand on Said Beg’s head. Both warriors went off to war. They went along with the army of the Singhs. Guru ji mounted his horses. His Kalgi swayed as he rode. Nobody could understand Guru ji’s qualities.
As Guru ji stood in front of the enemy lines, the Pahari Rajas came as well. The Singhs looked towards the enemy army. The Singhs said to Guru ji: “the expense of the battle is few for us.” Guru ji said: “close your eyes and see how much you have to fight with.” The Singhs obeyed and closed their eyes. They saw amazing things. They saw Lakhs of armies standing with them. They were the Armies of the Shaheeds. The Shaheeds were there with many weapons. Many were on horses, holding bows, rifles and shields. Some Shaheeds were on foot and ready to fight. They had anger in them, looking at the battlefield. The soil looked like gunpowder and the rocks looked like bullets. Many arrows were in the quivers. The Shaheeds wished to fight. The Singhs saw this and were filled with joy. The Singhs folded their hands and were ready to fight. They bowed their heads to Guru ji and charged the enemy. They were happy and struck their weapons. They showered their bullets like rain.
Guru ji sat on a hill to watch the battle. He watched the fierce battle. He casted his vision on every single Singh. 100 Turks attacked each Singh. Swords swung. Rifles were shot. The battle was fierce. Many fell, wounded. Their bodies were filled with blood. Bhai Ran Singh ji, Bhai Shyam Singh ji, Bhai Bir Singh ji, Bhai Daya Singh ji, Bhai Soorma Singh ji, Bhai Dharam Singh ji, Bhai Sahib Singh ji, Bhai Deva Singh ji, Bhai Tek Singh ji, Bhai Hari Singh ji, Bhai Ram Singh ji, Bhai Mohkam Singh ji, Bhai Dhanna Singh ji, Bhai Dhyaan Singh ji, Bhai Gyaan Singh ji, Bhai Maan Singh ji; they all shouted and killed the enemy. They advanced forward like it was a sport for them.
Bhai Said Beg ji took his weapons and advanced. He went to the front to fight. Raja Hari Chand Meeya came ahead to fight Bhai Said Beg ji. Both were great in sword and shield fighting. They fought each other with anger. Both had their swords and shields. They fought in many ways. They moved left, right, forward and back. They used special tactics in trying to kill each other. Satguru ji and the others stopped to watch these generals fight. Both wanted to win and kill the other. One struck and the other blocked. They used their shields to save themselves and swung their swords. They used many tactics to fight. They were getting cut on their bodies but they didn’t move back. Bhai Said Beg ji swung his sword. Hari Chand blocked the strike with his shield. He then swung. Bhai Said Beg ji saved himself. Bhai Said Beg ji swung his sword and cut Hari Chand’s head, killing him. When this was seen, Deen Beg came and challenged Bhai Said Beg ji. He swung his Saif and came to fight. Bhai Said Beg ji came in front of Deen Beg. Both fought for about an hour. Many warriors watched this. The warriors shouted out their appreciating calls when one of the generals did amazing and skillful strikes. Deen Beg swung his Saif and hit Bhai Said Beg ji. Bhai Said Beg ji fell in battle, doing the Simran: Guru Guru. Sri Prabhoo ji was very happy with him. He was happy that the brave warrior died the death of a true warrior. Everyone saw this amazing fight. Bhai Said Beg ji went to Heaven and achieved the Shaheed status. Kalgidhar ji blessed him and gave him passage to his own Lok, Sach Khand; the place of Shaheeds and Brahmgyaanis.
Many other Singhs fought in the battle. The Turks were piled like minarets on the field. Many were Shaheed in Bir Rass. Blood was everywhere. The ground was red. A fierce battle raged on. The bodies piled up. Vultures, crows and other scavengers came, shrieking. They came to eat the flesh. The bullets pierced the chests, breaking the ribcages. The heads exploded when shot with bullets. A lot of noise was made from both sides. There was a great charge from both sides. It was chaos. The warriors fought with great eagerness. Nobody stepped backwards. They fought each other, challenging each other when fighting. There were only 500 Singhs fighting 125,000 Turks. They made their horses dance without fear. They advanced forward, poking their spears. The Turks were amazed to see this as they suffered blow after blow. The dust flew up, blinding the view. It had become dark from the dust flying. Satguru ji sat for a long time. There was a lot of fighting and dying. The warriors covered the field. Metal clashed with metal.
6-3 Saida Khan does Darshan and Becomes a Fakir
In this way the battle raged on with Bhai Maymoo Khan Pathaan ji. He quickly released many arrows with speed. He made his horse jump, run left and right. He killed many enemies, moving around. He fought to make Guru ji happy. He killed the enemy and defended himself.
Saida Khan, the general, who commanded the whole army, his good Karma came to fruition. Love came into his heart. He had heard Guru ji’s praises but never had he seen him before. “Guru ji is filled with many qualities. He is generous and handsome. It was like the beauty of the world was all gathered by Vidhata and made into the face of Guru ji. The one idol of Guru Gobind Singh ji was made by collecting the best qualities and the beauty of the universe. The Guru’s idol was made and so Vidhatta was praised for this. Guru ji’s eyes were like lotus petals. His eyes would mesmerize and steal everyone’s attention. His eyes were filled with compassion. His eyes were clever like a fish. The poor moon was nothing in front of Guru ji’s face. The moon has craters. It wanes and waxes. Guru ji’s face had no faults. He was always radiant. How can you compare his face to the lotus? It closes in the night. How many qualities can we say? His praises were done in every home. He was capable with all the powers. His powers were unlimited. He was the giver of joy.” Saida Khan heard of these praises. Love came into his heart and so he wanted to see Guru ji. He never had the opportunity of Satguru ji’s Darshan before. He came to battle and so Khuddah gave him the opportunity to do Satguru ji’s Darshan. It was the battle that fulfilled his wish. Saida Khan had this wish. The armies fought each other but Saida Khan wanted to see Guru ji in his heart. He was afraid of his Turk comrades though. He didn’t want to meet Guru ji in any other way. He wanted to meet Guru ji with his weapons fastened. He wanted his Darshan on the battlefield: “he is omniscient and the Peer of Peers. He knows the heart’s wishes. He is won by love. I want him to come on his horse so I can see his Kalgi sway. This is my wish. I want to see him once.” Saida Khan had this wish. He didn’t say anything from his mouth out of fear. He knew that the Turks would object to his wish. He would be slandered among his people. They would tell on him to Aurangzeb: “the Badshah would see me as a disappointment.” He thought of all this. He was anxious to see Guru ji. His good karma awoke and love came into his heart.
Guru ji was under the spell of his love now. Saida Khan was anxious. His wish was strong. Sri Kalgidhar ji sensed this. He felt the faith in Saida Khan’s heart. Guru ji lost his patience and got up from the boulder he was sitting on. He got ready. He picked up his bow. He was under the spell of love. He took out an arrow and mounted his horse. He quickly moved his horse to come in front of Saida Khan. He said: “Khan ji, get ready. Leave your laziness and get ready. Be in attention and grab your weapons. Strike or block my strike!” Saida Khan was among his army men. He saw Guru ji and was amazed. He folded his hands, bowed and did a Salaam to Guru ji. He did the Darshan of the Guru, the sun. His eyes were like the lotus, blooming, seeing the sun. He was filled with a deep love. His throat swelled with emotion. He was filled with bliss. He said: “this is the power of Khuddah. He is the Khuddah who gives life to the Mureeds. I can’t compare myself to him. How can a firefly compare itself to the sun?”
Sri Kalgidhar ji said: “listen Khan ji to my words: you are the royal employee who commands an army. Win the battle and do your job.” When Saida Khan heard this, he came off his horse. He left his army and grabbed Guru ji’s feet. He put his head on Guru ji’s feet. The tears of bliss flowed from his eyes. His tears washed Guru ji’s feet. Where there was hatred to kill, there was now only love. He was filled with bliss. He was a Sikh of the Sri Guru in his last birth. His seed had sprout. For some fault he was born as a Turk. He still had the love of the Guru in his heart though. Guru ji was the knower of past and future. Guru ji knows the good and bad Karma. He knew that love came into Saida Khan’s heart. The love washed all of the sins away. Satguru ji put his hand on Saida Khan’s head. He was filled with compassion. He blessed his servant. Saida Khan denounced his family and the whole world. Vairagya came into his heart with a force. He let go of his weapons, horse and the whole army. He became a Fakir and decided to go to the jungle. He didn’t meet anyone again. Nobody saw him again. He had the bliss of Guru ji’s Darshan and just left. He saw the world as temporary, garbage and a myth. Only the Aatma was the truth. He understood this. His doubt was erased. He received Gyaan. Hatred and attachment, the root of his mind, was gone. He dispelled all of his delusions and saw the Brahm everywhere. Just like the darkness in a room was held and the darkness is gone with the light; he was unable to see the light due to the ego of his body. “Ahang Brahm Asmi,” I am the Brahm; his focus was fixed on this now. In the direction his face was facing, he walked that way. He became a Param Hans. His thoughts were all destroyed. He was still now. No thought was raised in his mind every again. His ego of the body died. He became the Brahm. The root ego of being born and dying; that was destroyed. He was not to be born again. The two armies saw this and were amazed at what Guru ji had done. They said: “what just happened?” Nobody knew what happened. Nobody knew where Said Khan went. They said: “did Guru ji did a magic spell? Saida Khan left such a big post. He left his wealth, home, son and woman. He came to fight but don’t know where he went. He left his army and his wealth. Where did he run to?”
The Umraavs of the Turks thought about this but couldn’t figure out what happened. They heard and talked about Saida Khan. The battle raged on. The Singhs continued fighting. The Singhs wondered how they would win. The arrows and bullets flew. They pierced chests and busted the heads. The Pahari Rajas fought. They all charged. The Turks were in great numbers. They all charged forward. The Turks couldn’t hold their ground in front of the Khalsa. They were being pushed back. They fired their rifles to kill the Turks. They would charge and then stand. There were Lakhs of enemies. How would they tolerate them? Saylas, spears and rifles were used. They yelled: “Vahiguru ji ki Fateh!” (The Victory belongs to Vahiguru)
6-4 Ramzaan Killed/ Aurangzeb get News
When Saida Khan received the Gyaan and left the battlefield, Ramzaan Khan came in front of Sri Satguru ji. He moved his horse and fired his arrows. He was quick and defended himself. The arrows passed around Satguru ji as none of them hit. The Khan’s arrows were all misses. Sri Kalgidhar ji saw that the Khan was clever. He moved around with agility. Guru ji moved his horse. He took out an arrow from his quiver. It had 1.25 Tola of gold on it. Guru ji pulled it to his ear and released it. The arrow went through Ramzaan Khan’s chest. He fell off his horse. The Turks got scared seeing this. Ramzaan Khan was killed with one arrow. Guru ji only fired one arrow. The Turks attacked the Singhs. The Khalsa lost their patience and retreated. How could they fight Lakhs of soldiers? How could they fight without the support of Guru ji? They ran back to Anandpur. The Turks chased them and began looting the homes. Where the money of Sri Mata Goojri ji was, the Turks looted that place. The Mughals and the Pathaans looted the place. They looted but were afraid of Guru ji. They looted the things and were happy. They didn’t show their fear on the outside. Some looted and went back. They left after taking their victory. They set up their camp far away out of fear. They rested the night and left. They left quickly.
The Turks came to Sirhind, travelling all night. They were afraid of the Singhs attacking them. Some of the Sikhs that ran away, they gathered and came back to Satguru ji. They regretted and looked depressed. They folded their hands and said: “Prabhoo ji, you first gave us victory. Paatshaah ji, you then gave us defeat. If you say the word, we can attack and take our revenge. We can loot their things. We will fight and kill them.” When the whole Khalsa had arrived, Sri Guru ji said: “Sikhs, listen, I am not independent. I follow Akaal Purakh’s command. Just as you obey me, I obey Parbrahm Parmeshwar. I do what is the command of Ishwar. Everyone is under the Ishwar’s command. I fear him in my heart, all the time. The Maryada made of all things, in the beginning, nobody is outside of it.” Guru ji said a Salok:
Salok M:1..
In the Fear, the wind and breezes ever blow. In the Fear, thousands of rivers flow.
In the Fear, fire is forced to labor. In the Fear, the earth is pinned under the weight.
In the Fear, Inder wanders with weight on his head. In the Fear, Dharam Raja stands at His Door.
The sun is in fear, the moon is in fear. They travel millions of miles, endlessly.
In the Fear, the Siddhas exist, as do the Buddhas, Devatas and Naths. In the Fear, the Akaashic ethers are stretched across the sky.
In the Fear, the warriors and the most powerful heroes exist. In the Fear, multitudes come and go.
The Inscription of His Fear is inscribed upon the heads of all. O Nanak, the Formless Lord is alone without fear, the True Lord, is One. ||1||
(SGGS 464)
Everyone heard this Salok. The Panth was depressed as they saw defeat for the first time. They said: “the Turks won and left. The Singhs of the Guru lost.” They said to Guru ji: “we will kill the Mughals all the way to Delhi.” Guru ji was happy to hear this. They stayed for 3 hours.
In the morning, the Nagaras were sounded. The Singhs mounted and mobilized. They chased the Turks. They reached Salemabad. The Singhs attacked the Turks. The Singhs killed whoever came in front of them. Many heads rolled. They took revenge from who came. They looted and beat up the Vaheer of the Turks. There was a lot of noise. The Turks left in fear. They didn’t want to stay there till night: “where did these warriors come from?” The Turks all left on their paths. The Singhs killed any Turk they could fine. The Turks were really scared. The Singhs attacked all of a sudden. The Turks couldn’t take care of themselves. Everyone ran. The Turks were in Lakhs but ran away. The Singhs looted what was taken. They took victory and took back what was looted. They took their revenge. They came back to Anandpur. They saved the Panth and came to Anandpur. They saved themselves and said the Fateh of the Guru to Guru ji.
Guru ji was happy. Everyone did his Darshan. The enemy was killed. Guru ji listened to the whole story of how it happened. Guru ji smiled and said: “the work of the Singhs is to kill the Turks. The Khalsa Panth will grow. The Turks will be destroyed. You will keep taking revenge. This is your work. Nobody will stand in front of you with their Nagara.” Guru ji was really happy. He gave them boons: “you will receive kingdoms and radiance. This is what happened in Anandpur.
Listen to how the Turks ran in a horrible condition. They were hurt and ran. They went to Shah Nauranga. They said: “the Singhs of the Guru beat us up. The Umraav you sent as a great warrior, he saw the Guru and became a Fakir. We couldn’t figure out where he went. The whole army was shocked. The great and powerful Ramzaan Khan, he was killed with only one arrow. The Guru had a very small army. They killed thousands by fighting the battle. They came and looted all our wealth after we won and looted Anandpur. They beat us up.” Nauranga heard this and regretted this. He thought to himself: “my kingdom is in danger. I have heard of his powers.” He couldn’t tolerate the glory of Guru ji. He scratched his head and had pain in his mind. “What can I do? I fought with his father. I left Delhi after he died. He is showing his power now. If I don’t capture him, my honour can’t stay.” Nauranga thought about all this. He spent the night like this, thinking.
In the morning, Nauranga held court. The wise ministers were called. Qazis and Maulvis came. They all talked of the rules of the Deen Shariya. When they all came and sat in the court, the Badshah said: “the ones that came, running from the battlefield, call them. Let’s hear what happened. I want to ask them how they saw the Guru in the battle.” The soldiers came in front of Nauranga. Nauranga said: “what noise is the Hindu making? How many soldiers did he have? How brave is he? How is his justice? How is he as a Peer and Murshid?” The Ahdeeyas heard this and said: “he gives power of Lakhs into one. He is clever and smart in every way. He is alert. His Khalsa is the same way. He is young and really handsome.” The corrupt Shah heard this and said: “you call him brave. I am the leader and the Peer. I am the Master of the public and a peer worth of worship. You praise the Hindu? You lose mercy in this way. I kick you out of the Deen.” His chest burned with jealousy. He said to the court: “what should I do? The Guru and I can’t be compared. He is not the follower of my religion.” The clever ones spoke according to their intellect. There was a Qazi at the back who said: “if he is very smart, love him and call him to you. Look at his form and speak to him as much as you wish. Test him as you wish. See what everyone praises him for.” When the Shah and the court heard this, they all praised the Qazi for his suggestion. They said: “you said a good thing! This is the best thing to do. We will call him so he becomes our friend. The wise Qazi spoke good. Write the Parwanas!” The Shah commanded this. “There is only one Badshah at one time. Know this in your heart. This is the command to call you. Your religion and our religion are not really different. I think it’s the same. Otherwise I will come to you, where you sit with bravery. The power of Fakiri you have, it will all be gone from the world. There are big and small Fakirs. I have the kingdom. You can stay in your home too. Don’t have revolt in your heart for me.” Aurangzeb spoke in ego, just as kings showed. He then went on: “I have received the blessing from Heaven. I was blessed by the Parvadhagar Jagdeesh.” The letter was sent in the hands of an ambassador. He was told to go right away.
The ambassador came to Guru ji. He came to Guru ji’s court, after being called by Guru ji. The ambassador came close to Guru ji. Guru ji heard the letter and then had a response written: “from whom you received your blessings, that same Purakh sent me too. I was sent to do justice. You have forgotten justice and are earning hypocrisy. How can we meet? You are in conflict with the Hindus. You don’t see the world belonging to Khuddah. You want to destroy the Dharam.” The ambassador was given leave after been given money and gifts.
The ambassador came back to Nauranga and read the response. Nauranga was really mad to hear the response. This was Nauranga’s story. Now listen to what happened to the Pahari Rajas. The Singhs looted the areas of the Paharis. They fought with them. The Sikhs in other lands heard about this and came to join the Panth. The Sikh Sangat came. Thousands came by the day. They fastened weapons and roamed the mountains.
6-5 The Paharis Make Requests to Nauranga
When the Pahari Rajas saw Guru ji’s people coming into their area to loot them and beat them; they noticed that the Khalsa was growing instead of decreasing in numbers. Bheem Chand was really upset. His villages were being ruined by the power of the Khalsa. The Guru was a great warrior who loved the battlefield. He always wanted to battle. Bheem Chand felt helpless: “how should we request the Badshah again?” The Rajas all decided to go back. They gathered money and gifts for the Badshah. Bheem Chand took Handooria Raja and went to Delhi, very quickly.
The Rajas gave many gifts and bowed their heads. They did the Salaam and met the Sooba of Delhi. They said: “only the Emperor is our support. It has been many years since he left Delhi. He gave you the charge of Delhi for that reason. You are our support. If someone is doing bad with us, you helped us before with an army of 10,000. You did a good thing for us. You raged a fierce battle. After that, The Sooba of Sirhind came. The Guru crossed the Sutlej at that point.” The Sooba Delhi said to the Pahari Rajas: “you should go to the Badshah now. I will write to him and tell him about the problems you are facing. Get the command of taking a huge army form the Emperor. Fight with force.” The Rajas thought this was a good idea. They realized: “without meeting the Shah, we can’t succeed.” They had the Sooba write a letter. They wanted the letter to reach the Shah before they could.
In Hyderabad, Aurangzeb was battling with the Gol Kunda fort. The Delhi King did a terrible act with the 9th Paatshaah. Aurangzeb couldn’t live in Delhi ever since. He went to the Deccan as an excuse. He was stubborn and proud. He had jealousy and hatred towards Guru ji. The Pahari Rajas left Delhi and went to Hyderabad by covering long distances every day. They reached and set up their camp. They met the Umraavs and bribed them to be able to meet the Shah. They said: “tell him that we have a request for him.” The Umraavs told the Shah: “Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji is causing a lot of issues. The Rajas are in trouble. They have come to make a request to you.” The Shah heard this and called the Rajas. The Rajas came and presented their gifts. They stood with their hands folded. They told the Shah what happened to them: “the Guru is fearless. We are living in our land and he has made an army which does not let us live in peace. The Guru does not fear anyone. He always loves war. He fights with us.” Nauranga heard this and said: “why are you in conflict with the Guru? I sent a huge army before for your help but your conflict did not end. The Guru has no land or kingdom. Where is he keeping such an army? Tell me everything of why this is happening.” The Raja’s folded their hands and spoke of what was their perspective on the conflict: “the Father of the Guru bought the land from us where he lives now. He established a city and then went east. He went to Patna, where the Guru was born. When he went to Svarag, the Guru took charge in a young age of the land. He came here to live. He grew up there. He kept servants and soldiers as he grew up. He started to hunt the area as he grew up. First, he only hunted but then they started to ruin our villages and our fields. We got together to pressure him out. He then went to Shaarmohr, leaving Anandpur. He caused problems there too. Ram Rai’s people lived there; he killed them all. He had conflicts with the Rajas there. Hari Chand was very rich. The Guru fought a battle with him and killed him. He made all of the Pahari Rajas run away. He established a city near the shores of the Jamuna. He lived there for a long time and then came back to Anandpur.
He lived in Anandpur and worshipped the Kali Devi and made her appear. He received power and boons from the Shakti and created a new and strong Panth. It was different from the Hindus and the Turks. When we went to him once, he gave us all advice and told us to become Singhs to live in joy. He said: “your kingdom and wealth will grow. I am the enemy of the Delhi Shah. We will all unite and fight him to take the kingdom. I will avenge my father’s death. I will finish the Turks.” When the Guru said your name, we got scared. We refused his proposal. We saw you as our master. We went back to our Dheras after. He sent Singhs after us. They were 4 Varnas all gathered in a group. They all sit together and eat in one place. The Guru tells them all to keep weapons and love the battle. The other Rajas, the Guru wants them to be the slaves of his Sikhs. He wants to destroy the courts of the Malaich by looting and beating them. He says: “my father and mother are Asidhuj and Asikaali. They support and protect the Panth.” He says this to them so they fight the Turks. He motivates them in this way. He first had hundreds of Singhs and now he has thousands. They wield weapons and come into our land to loot it. They loot the Pahari areas. We kept forgiving them but they didn’t stop. They come when they feel like it. We then came to Delhi to meet the Sooba. He sent you a letter. Two of your Umraavs took 10,000 men to fight. There was a battle fought that we expensed to fight. A fierce battle was fought. Painda Khan fought the Satguru. He shot 2 arrows and missed. The Guru shot just one arrow and killed him. With a Saif, he cut the head off of Painda Khan. Deen Baig was injured severely. There was a village of Khidrabaad. The Pathaans ran away. The army you sent, it ran away. The Singhs chased them. We Rajas are nothing, your army couldn’t stand. We couldn’t fight his army. After your army left, they caused a lot of problems. We collected all the Raja. I said: “the Singhs are growing. They want to fight. They want to rule kingdoms. You don’t chase them. You remain sitting.” I said this to them and then gathered the army. The 22 kingdoms got together and collected the army. We attacked Anandpur and fought a great battle. The brave Kesri Chand was killed there. There was no counting how many injured men we had. Thousands died on the battlefield. The Pahari army was huge but the Satguru could not be defeated. We fought for many days and spent a lot of money. We tried everything but lost. We gave the sake of the cow to get the Guru out. We told him that we promise not to attach you if you leave Anandpur. He honored the sake of the cow and came out playing the Nagara. When he came out, we started a battle with him, breaking our promise to leave him alone. We surrounded him from all 4 sides. When your letter came here, the Sooba Sirhind came to help us. His huge army joined us. He fought with strength and wealth. We made the Guru cross the Sutlej. He stayed there for some time. When everyone went home, the Guru came back. They looted Kalmot, the great village. They looted it and ruined it. They killed many men. They came back to Anandpur then. They caused a lot of problems again. Two Umraavs came. We joined them and we then attacked. One of them joined the Guru. Said Beg came to his home. Then the army of 125,000 soldiers came a few days ago. They fought a battle. The Rajas met them and fought a battle. The Guru came to the battle himself. Saida Khan saw him and was mesmerized. He left his weapons and grabbed his feet. He left and we don’t know where he went. We fought and looted. Ramzaan Khan was killed by the Guru. The army came back after looting. The Singhs attacked from behind. They killed thousands. Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji is very strong and brave. We are in pain and we come to you for help. Send a huge army to capture the Guru.”
