5-51 The Kabits of the Hazoori Kavis
Now I will speak of the Kavis that lived with Guru ji. They sang praises in Kabits, while receiving a lot of money and wealth from Guru ji. They received money and made a living by impressing Guru ji with their wisdom. Whatever they wished for, they received from the Tenth Guru. Guru ji was so benevolent and generous that he gave some of them Mukti. The Kavis left their homes to come to Guru ji from the four directions. They came and lived in Anandpur. They were blessed with marriages to women and had sons. They received praise and money from Guru ji. The ones that had no desires, they received Mukti. Some received both wealth and Mukti. The praises of Guru ji spread in all four directions. The praise was radiant like the moon without the craters. Some of the Kabits that the Kavis sang, oh friends, I will state them here now for you to listen to. This is to make the Gursikhs happy. I wish for the people of the Prabhoo to hear these praises and for their minds to become pure. The Katha of Sri Kalgidhar ji is the highest. I will state it as I heard it according to my wisdom. The Gunkhaani was amazing. His ways were amazing. Hearing his praises makes one’s mind and words pure. The valour of Guru ji was praised in the Kabits by the Kavis. His generosity and benevolence were stated. I will now state what the Kavis said in his praise. Listen oh Khalsa to the praises that the Kavis sang while sitting and living in the court of the True Guru.
Kavi Hans Ram – What use is it to go to Avadh and marking your forehead with a Tilak? To go to Dwarka and make markings on your body, what use is it? To call yourself a scholar, shaving your head, to live in Kanshi, what use is this all? To make Mohan happy, what will you get? To make a king happy, what will you get? Hans Ram says, by wandering the earth, will that give you Mukti? The pain of the 4 Varnas, Guru Gobind ji’s feet are the destroyers of the pains. They give the Mukti.
To where the sun’s light does not reach; where the radiance of the King of Delhi cannot reach; where the moonlight cannot reach; where the lions roam in joy; where Inder’s power has not substance; where Kamadeva’s wisdom does not reach; Shiv ji does not have the wisdom; where the Shrutis and Simritees cannot hear the praise in their dreams; that is where Guru Gobind Singh ji’s praise has reached.
Who would go to live in Banaras, where the snake around Shiv ji’s neck, Vasuki, shines on his chest? What point is to live in Ayodhya, which is void of the Ragunath who destroyed the sins? The sins no longer wash away. To shave the head and go to Prayag, the people and Devatas laugh at them. If you wish for something, you will get it from the son of Sri Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji. Why does not one come to do the Darshan of the Guru Gobind Rai?
The four directions serve your feet oh Guru Gobind ji. In my knowledge, in today’s day in age, you are the second Kartaar. You are the most powerful and reside in all of the Khands, the whole universe. You are the true Emperor of all. Your head holds the responsibility of establishing the truth in the world. You are the completer of wishes, says Hans Ram. This is your habit. This is your Dharma. The one who does your Darshan, they receive the Vivek. You are the most generous. You destroy the pain of others. Who knows how you took an Avatar (in this fierce time)?
Shikaar Barnan (hunting praise) – Guru Gobind Singh ji, the true Emperor, his hand holds the Besra (hawk). The hawk is so fierce that can terrorize the greatest of Kuhans (another species of hawk). The other hawks do not dare face Guru ji’s hawk. The hawk destroys the strength of Behris (hawk species). The hawk terrorizes the Chakarvaaks and so they do not eat when it is out hunting. The hawk is so fierce that lions forget who they are. The hawk has destroyed the greatest birds. When the hawk is angry, the birds give their heads to him. The Garud bows his ego to Guru ji’s Baaz. The biggest hawks gave up. The Zorawar hawk has conquered the other birds. When the Zurra is released from Guru ji’s hand, Lakhs of birds hide. Guru ji released the Baaz, seeing a bird. The Hawk grabbed the head with his claws and pecked at its body. In anger, he killed a kulmurg (owl) and drank its blood. Guru ji was happy to see this. Guru ji commanded for the best horses and gave them as donations to others in joy.
When Guru ji mobilizes, the mountains tremble and the noise shake the sky. The public and the fools get scared. The deer in the jungles, the elephants, birds and monkeys cannot stay calm when Guru ji comes to hunt. Where will the lions, panthers, deer, rabbits, gazelles, bears, and bores go when he comes? He shoots them with his bullets. He cuts the Devibaahan (mount of the Devi – lions) with his sword. He looks for them in the caves and shoots them. The sinners leave their homes and run away. This is the casual hunting expedition of Guru Gobind Singh ji. What will happen when he goes to war?
When Guru Gobind Singh ji decorates his horse and mounts it, the biggest peaks of the mountains are squished. The news spread to Lanka and Vibhishana becomes scared like a pauper. The hoods of Shaishnaag break; the Digpals move back; Shiv ji loses his patience. The Turtle and Varaah get uneasy when Guru ji’s army mobilizes.
Kavi Sudhama – Dhaan (donations) – we studied together with Sandeepen in the village of Atank. I realised this and asked my wife: “if I had betelnut fruit, I would give it to Guru Gobind Singh ji for blessings.” My wife said: “you are Sudhama and he is Gobind. Take rice for him in your ripped clothes as Sudhama did for Krishna.” I did what she said. I came to your court, hearing of your return to earth. When I met you, you gave me so much that I couldn’t count it. I knew who you were by love. I am the same Brahmin Sudhama of Dwapur and you are the Gobind Krishna.
Kavi Santokh Singh ji – the son of Bhrigu, Parshuram, gave the donations to the Brahmins. His donations were taken away from the Brahmins while Parshuram was alive. The Brahmins still need to beg. The donation was not complete. Anand Sandho received donations from Ram Chander ji’s Asmedh Yagna. His sons and grandsons ate from the donations and it eventually finished. Yudhistir and Karan gave donations but that all finished too, says Santokh Singh. They became beggars again. The donations that Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji gave, never finished but grew double and quadruple by the day.
Two horses, Arab and Iraq, were called for and saddled. They were big and strong. They were obedient and clever. They were like lightening. They were faster than the wind. The horses of Surya could not compare to them. They were smatter than fish. Princes wanted these horses. Guru Gobind Singh ji gave such horses to us Kavis. That was not useless. Inder could not get such horses.
You waged war, like Paarth waged the Mahabharat. The carnivores ate the flesh on the battlefields as much as they wanted to. The elephants trumpeted, coming out of the big homes and trembled at the sound of your Nagaras. The battles you waged were heard of in the Heavens. The Devatas talk about your battles, forgetting their food and fashions. Guru Gobind Singh ji killed many sinners, laying them on the ground. Only Kaal can make them alive again. Guru Gobind Singh ji, you have mighty arms and are a great warrior. The army of the sinners hide in the jungles, fearing you. You held a sword and cut the sinners. The 64 Joganis came and drank the blood. Your Sahithis pierced the enemy and rivers of blood flowed. They lost their will to live, once they were pierced. If a room catches fire, smoke fills. The smoke leaks from a small opening in a thick way. That is how blood flowed from the enemy. The Dijpals of the 10 directions, the greatest kings of the earth, they see your qualities. You are the radiant emperor. Sharda (Kavi) says, the earth rests on your head. You are the radiance of the best warriors. You killed the best warriors. Oh Kavi, don’t think of anything else. Go to the feet of the Guru. Your poverty will be destroyed. If you ask a boon from Hari, he gives it to you in a line. Ask from Guru Gobind Singh ji. He will connect you to Kartaar and protect you.
Whichever land you go to, the kings of the lands all sing your praises. By holding your feet, statuses are achieved. Why go anywhere else? The weight of Garj comes onto the neck. I am in the shelter of the radiant Guru. He is the complete one. His praises cover the world. When one speaks in your court after being blessed, we tie one horse at our home and receive another one from your court.
Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji picked up his sword. The enemy prepared their elephant. You gave a Nagini which pierced the elephant. The elephant bowed (to Bachittar Singh ji). His spear was raised up in the sky and looked like he was blessing the elephant. When the blood flowed from the elephant’s head, it was like a fountain. When Hanuman went to get the Sanjivini, Bachittar Singh ji held the spear with his two hands to get the herb.
When the powerful Guru Gobind Singh ji got ready and came to the battlefield, he killed the sinners like elephants were cut. The Bharons, Bhoots and Prayts came to eat the flesh. Shiv ji would come to pick out the best skulls for his garland. The dead elephants would give off the pearls. The vultures would take the red pearls, drenched in blood. The vultures would get scared, thinking it is fire instead. They would not eat the pearls in doubt. They would throw the pearls. The pearls looked like stars falling from black clouds.
Seeing your radiance, the other kings get scared, like a leaf shaking in the hand. The water of the ocean dries up; the Dhroo Star fears of moving. The universe gets scared. In the blink of an eye, you break the greatest forts. If you grunt on the battlefield, your soldiers are filled with Bir Rass and win the biggest forts. Hans Ram says that the Simran of the Satguru scares the Dijpals, seeing Guru ji fight. The Earth goes deeper when your army comes.
When your Nagara sounds, the kings of the directions get scared. Kuber’s house is in chaos then, fearing his wealth being looted. Lanka gets scared with terror. Bibheekhan gets scared. When Guru Gobind Singh ji stands on the earth, the kings stand with their hands folded. They say: “please protect us. It is your Dharma to keep us safe.” The queens of the enemies cry and ask for water. They don’t get water. They use pearls to quench their thirst.
Satguru ji is the ocean of praise. His love is always new. If you speak of strength, you are like Bheem. You are calm and cool. No other place is calmer or cooler. You are the jewel of the earth. The earth would have looked empty without you. The sinners get pain from you. You give joy to whoever visits you, seeing your face. You are the treasure of courage. Kavi Aalam says, the whole world sings your praise in all 8 Pehars (24 hours). You are the radiant emperor, Guru Gobind Singh ji. Raja Bhoj was happy only sometimes. Happiness lives with you everyday.
You are the ocean of calm. You are the most courageous in battle. You are victorious in battle. Kuber is not as generous as you. Which Kavi can describe your praises? You are brighter than the sun. Your praise is spread to the ocean. Your sword is praised. When you fight on the battlefield, you cut the fools; the land of the sinners is annexed. The fear of your sword is real, Guru Gobind Singh ji. Your praise shines brighter that the Sumer Mountain.
When your Dhundhabs sound, they sound like thundering clouds. When your Nishans fly, the sun bows. His radiance hides. The elephants in your army cannot be counted. The horses in your army shine bright. The horses gallop and make noise. Inder gets scared seeing this. The kings get scared. Hans Ram Kavi says: “don’t run away oh kings. Don’t get scared. The elephants and horses you see, they are the gifts Guru ji gave to the Kavis.
The Sadhoos receive protection from Guru ji. He is the ocean of protection. He is the ocean of bravery. He is more beautiful than the moon. The moon has craters. You are the Kalapbrish for the Kavis. When you are angry, you are the form of death. Among the Devatas, Daanavs, humans and Munis; your praise is evident. Everyone comes to your shelter. Your sword is true and your Degh is true. You are the true warrior who protects the asylum seeker. You came as Guru Gobind Singh ji, that’s why you are called the true king.
Saam Ved is the supreme among the Vedas. Ocean is the keeper of Maryada. Sumer is the highest mountain. You are the most Giani in Gyaan. You are the ocean of honour. You are the best son. You are more handsome than the moon. Your compositions of Baani are the best. You are more generous than Hari Chand. Who knows how many Hari Chands come to ask from you, standing by your feet. You are evident and the supreme. You received the praise from your elders. You are radiant like the sun. You wield the sword like Parshuram. You are the greatest Guru.
You are more beautiful than Kamadeva. Your horses are faster than deer. Your horses are like Garud. Your horses leave the wind behind. They leave the mind behind. In running, they cross the biggest bridges. The sun’s chariot is one, he sees the many chariots of Guru ji. There is no place where such horses and hawks are. These horses are given to the Kavis.
The fairies get warriors. The Joganis are satiated. The scavengers are satiated. Everyone gives well wishes. The widows are in pain of the same battle. When you hold a sword like a lion, Naarad’s home has celebrations. When you hold an arrow, other archers drop their egos. The bullets rain like raindrops. The spears are taken away. The Sahithis are taken away. The Kataars are lost. The knives can’t touch you. The Gurjs are dropped. The biggest weapons are dropped. When you kill the enemy, what can we say? Your sword is so great. It is like the broom that collects all the dirt.
Guru Gobind Singh ji’s sword comes out of the sheath like lightening within the clouds. It is like the tongue of Death with poison. When it touches the neck of the sinners, the heads roll. The sinner loses his courage. There is chaos in all four directions. The sinners run away. Who can stand in front of you? The places of water become dry and the land drowns. Kavi Santokh Singh ji says: “the sinners run away without delay. When they see your bright sword shining, they become sparrows.”
5-52 The Kabits of the Kavis
52 Kavis would live with Guru ji all the time. Many other Kavis came and went. They would say their praises and receive money for their art and leave. Those Kavis wrote many compositions along with translations of other Granths, Vedas and Shastras. The weight of those papers weighed 9 Maunds. The finest and most detailed knowledge was written by them. The name of that Granth was “Vidhyadhar,” named by Guru ji. It was a beloved Granth. Many types of poems, containing the 9 Rasses of poetry, were written. When Guru ji fought the battle of Anandpur, the Granth was looted from the fort as the Khalsa left Anandpur. The sinners attacked with deceit and so the Khalsa left Anandpur. The Granth was never bound and so the papers were all scattered into the river or looted by the sinners. It didn’t stay in one place so the Khalsa did not get it again. 62 papers of that Granth, I have seen, that remained in Anandpur. That is how I got to see the praise of Guru ji written by the Kavis. Some I have written in the last Adhyaaya. Some I will write now. Listen oh listeners with your focus. Hearing the praises of the Guru, do not get bored of them. Listen to his praises over and over again. Hearing the praises of the Guru, one receives Dharam, Arth, Kaam and Moksha.
Kabit – Anand da vaaja nit vajda Anandpur, sun sun sudh bhuldi ay narnaah di. The instrument of Anand plays everyday in Anandpur. Hearing the instrument, the kings lose their senses. Bibheekhan got scared if he would remain in the Lanka fort or not. He thinks the strong-armed one has returned to take his kingdom again. Raja Bal let his strength go and hid in the Pataals. Whose door is always adorned with the sign of victory; the sinners can’t sleep in peace at night; Guru Gobind Singh ji’s Naubat does not let the sinners sleep.
The shawls of Kashmir, which is worn by kings and emperors looking beautiful; such shawls are in Guru Gobind Singh ji’s court. They are made by the best weavers. They decorate them nicely by making flowers and designs. If a beggar would wear such a shawl, he would be worth Lakhs. It can win the cold (as they are warm), such is the radiance of these shawls. Kavi Mangal says, it seems like it is the shawl of Bhagvan Krishan ji. They are black, white, yellow, red, purple and other colours. When Guru ji is happy, he gives these shawls to the Kavis in joy.
When the Singhs mount their horses, they can destroy the biggest forts. They have the power of Akaal Purakh. They can kill the biggest sinners. Some Singhs don’t even have beards. When their beards grow, they scratch the chests of the Dijpals. They mix the capitals of the kings into the dust. Guru Gobind Singh ji is the strong-armed one that can win the lands of the kings. The son of the Guru learns to tie his Pugri later. He learns how to fasten his kirpan first.
Dhroo received the immortal status in Surlok from you. Namdev ji received blessings from you and then you turned the Mandir for him. You gave the Lanka to Bibheekhan when trouble fell upon him. Kavi Mangal sings your mangals and asks from you. When Dropati asked for clothes, when her clothes were being looted, you kept her honour and piled up clothes in front of her. Who else can give such donations other than you? There is no use to ask from anyone else besides Guru Gobind Rai ji.
You destroyed the Asuras. You protected the Devatas. You saved the Bhagats by giving them the herb of Mukti. To kill the sinner armies, to destroy the strong forts; to gather all of the joys, your praise is full of radiance. The cane plays in your hand, performing all these miracles. It is like the Chakram in Vishnu’s hand to kill the sinners. It is the sign of victory in your hand. It is the gurj in the hands of Vishnu. It is the black cane in your hand now.
In Bindraban, you played the flute in the streets. Says Kavi Sharda, that is the same cane that you had as a flute that you played near the shores of Yamuna. You are now here, near the Sutlej and the flute has become a cane. Oh kings of the world and Bhagats, look how fortunate this cane is. Look how fortunate I am. I got to praise this cane. The cane was once a Chakram and once a flute. It was once a Gurj. It touched your lips when you were Krishan. Today you are Guru Gobind Singh ji and it is a cane.
You are the complete Purakh Avatar with unlimited powers. You came yourself. We can receive any wish we want from your Darbar. You live in every heart. Your name is Avinashi, the indestructible one. You are the doer of the world. We see you. You are the son of the 9th Guru. You are worship-worthy. You have the Tegh and are detached from everything. Mangal Kavi says you are the place of all the mangals. Guru Sahib Gobind Rai ji, you are the giver of Anand. Whoever wants Anand, come to Anandpur.
Armies of Brahmins, Jogis and saints stand at your door for gifts. Many stand at your door, singing your praises. You give Lakhs of monies to them. Inder is afraid of you, fearing that you will loot his treasure to give donations next. Guru Gobind Singh ji’s donations are known in the world. The beggars have become kings, so much you gave them. They became worry-free. Bali, Bain, Bikramajeet and Bhoj gave donations sometimes but you give their years-worth of donations in one day.
You took the kingdom from Raavan and gave it to Bibheekhan. When you wanted to, you came as Bhaavan and tied up Bali. When Brahma made the pillar, did he put Narsingh in there? You came as Narsingh in the pillar to save Prahlaad. Guru ji, you do as you wish. You need not anyone’s permission. If you ask the Vedas, they also say that Parmeshwar can do as he wishes. The other kings exist but your kingdom is the highest.
If you go to the Teeraths, tying white clothes; if you go to the caves and eat grass and leaves; if you go to Dwarka and mark your body with markings; if you go to Kanshi and live there for many Yugas; if you worship the Mandirs and temples of the world; if you wear the signs of the 6 Darshans and wander around; you still won’t get anything. If you want something right away, Mangal, go to Guru Gobind Singh ji and he will give you everything in one instance of joy.
On both of the sides of the ocean, on land; your praise is sung by all. The beggars remember you and become rich with thousands. They come one by one to say their poems to you. The 4 Varanas and the 6 Darshans all come to your door. Mangal says, they all have their wishes fulfilled. It’s like Guru Gobind Singh ji is being looted like Raja Bali. One comes to get donations and another leaves with gifts.
Becoming your enemy, he cannot keep his patience. When your Nagara sounds, the earth trembles in fear. When your army moves, the Varah under the earth moves. The turtle that holds the earth also moves. The hoods of Shaishnaag (that holds the earth) lose their strength. You are the king of kings. Many big kings fear your form. Earthquakes come and the Dijpals are disturbed; elephants tremble in fear and rub their foreheads on the ground; the kings fear your form.
You are the strong-armed one, Guru Gobind Singh ji. You are the greatest warrior. When you look in anger, the wives of the enemies wander the jungles in fear. These queens had never left their palaces before. They climb mountains and cry. The beautiful faces of the queens; they become upset and hungry. They think their pearls are water and put them to their lips. The Chakors come to the queens thinking it’s the moon. The parrots come to the queens thinking their lips are a fruit. They attract peacocks and cuckoos. Their braids are like snakes. These beautiful queens run away when you are angry.
Your radiance is illuminating in the world. The radiant ones bow to your feet and praise them. The kings wish to see you. Kavi Hans Ram says: the saints that the kings with to see, they think of your feet. The victors of lands, the kings whom can’t be visited; they are the guards of your court.
Karan was a great donor. There is the creator of the universe. You are the greatest donor. You are the creator of the universe. You are the destroyer of sinners. Your radiance is the greatest. You are the ancient One whom the Puranas sing about. You are the support of all but don’t require the support of any. The Jot of your praise is lit all they way to Jambu Dveep. Your praise is everywhere. Hans Ram says: in the family of the Guru, this tradition is evident: if someone comes to meet them, they meet with love but if someone comes with swords, they are faced with rifles.
Parshuram, the strong, came in Satyuga. He killed the Kshatriyas and took their kingdoms. They couldn’t rule again. In Tretayuga, Ram Chander ji killed Raavan. The vultures ate the flesh of the people of Lanka. In Dwapur, Krishan played the Bansuri in the jungles. Devatas, animals and Munis were enchanted by the flute. In Kaliyuga, to save the people and the Sadhoos, you came in the beautiful form of Guru Gobind Singh ji.
Parvati hides Ganesh in her lap. Shiv ji rubs ash on his body out of fear. The Dijpals hear the noise. The Kings are always scared. The enemies close their doors when Guru Gobind Singh ji thinks of his sword. Nobody takes care of their elephants or friends. They can’t take care of their armies when Guru ji thinks of his sword.
Jungles break, mountains burst, the patience is gone of the earth; the Dijpals are scared, Shaishnaag shakes his head in fear under the earth; the dirt flies from the horse steps and the sun hides in fear; Bibheekhan hides in his fort or caves; when Guru Gobind Singh ji picks up his sword and mounts his horse, all dressed up. The whole world goes into chaos. The kings are scared and run away, leaving their homes.
In Satyuga, if you didn’t come as the Bhaavan Avatar, Raja Bali would have done Yagnas and taken over heaven. Daynts would have lived there. If in Treta, Shri Ram Chander ji wouldn’t have come, nobody could have destroyed Raavan’s Kingdom. In Dwapur, if Krishan didn’t come, who would have given joy to the saints and destroyed the sinners? In Kaliyuga, you came as the Guru. Who would have protected the Hindu Dharma? Who would have illuminated the Hindu Dharma other than you?
Chai jaati ekta, anekta bilai jaati, hovti kucheelta kitaaban Kuran ki.
Paap hi prapuk jaatay, dharam dhusuk jaatay, baran garak jaatay sahit bidhaan ki.
Devi Dev Dehura Santokh Singh door hotay, reet mit jaati katha Bedan Puraan ji.
Sri Guru Gubind Singh paavan param soor, moorat na hoti jopai karuna Nidhaan ki.
There would have been only one religion (in Hindustan); diversity would have been destroyed; the Kataybs and Kuran would only have been revered.
Sins would have become solid, the Dharma would have been destroyed; the Varanas would have no longer existed, the ways of the Vidhata would have been gone.
The Mandirs of Devis and Devatas, Santokh Singh, would have been far; the traditions of the Katha of Vedas and Puranas would have died out.
Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji is the pure and supreme warrior; if this idol of compassion would not have been, there would have been catastrophe.
Just as Parshuram captured the Kshatriyas; Ram captured Raavan; Balram overpowered Jarasandh; these 3 are the lions amongst the people; just as Shiva defeats Kaam, Garuda defeats the snake; as wind is heavy upon the Divas; like lions overpower the prey; as the sun defeats darkness; as the warrior is heavy in the battle; as Harinakashyup was defeated by Varah; as Haranakash was defeated by Narsingh; as Kaal is heavy over all; as fire destroys jungles; that is how Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji is upon the families of the Malaich.
The praise of the Sri Ten Gurus is the greatest. It is the same among the ten. The wise Kavis sing the praises of the Gurus. The Sikhs hear it and become joyful.
The ocean cannot fit in a seashell. The grains of sand cannot be counted. The praise of Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji cannot be fully sung.
The ones who wish for the joys of Heaven, they should listen to this Katha. If they wish for the achievement of good skills, listen to this Katha. I wrote this Katha to impress such listeners in detail.
Buffaloes, pigs, donkeys, dogs and others wanted to dirty the waters of the Ganga but the Ganga can never be dirty. The doubters tried but they couldn’t dirty the Katha of the Guru.
The ones who don’t praise other’s qualities, don’t have good qualities themselves. They burn their own hearts here in pain and when they die, they go to Hell.
The Fifth Rut has been completed by Santokh Singh. I wrote the praises of the Guru written by the Kavis by looking for and researching.
Read them, listen to them; have faith. Destroy the doubts of your mind. Have love for the Guru. Walk the righteous path; do the Simran; you will easily receive Mukti.
I bow to everyone listening to this. Don’t be angry with me when hearing this. Where I have made a mistake, forgive me and fix it yourself.
To make my skill a success; to be happy here and in the life hereafter; I wrote this Katha of the Guru and received the 4 Padarthas.
While I am alive, this Katha gave me prosperity and joy. I received what I needed and wished for. In my heart, I have faith that the Guru will be my support in the Parlok.
Thus ends the 5th Rut.
