5-1 Sant Mangal/ Mata Sahib Deva comes
Ik Oankaar Satgur Prasaad
Sri Vahiguru ji ki Fateh
All the Gyanis and Dhyanis do Simran of Akaal Purakh by many names. With Simran, the saints cleansed their minds and knew the Parmeshwar. They were not born again. The Saints are immersed in the Sat, Chit and Anand. I bow to those Saints and ask them to help me complete this Granth. I bow the feet of the saints, folding my hands.
Brahma was not able to find the end of Parmeshwar. Shiv ji and the other Devatas could not find the full form of Akaal Purakh. Kartikeya and Ganesh sing the praises of Akaal Purakh but can not fully speak of Parmeshwar. They have been singing for Yugas. Shaishnaag says the name of Akaal Purakh with his thousand mouths. He does not repeat any name twice, ever. He says new names of Akaal Purakh everyday. Sarsvati is the Shakti of speech that lives on the tongues of poets. She holds the Veena. She allows the Bani to come through. Make my wisdom and speech pure like the Tribaini waters, oh Devi of Vidya. Take my obstacles away, oh Shakti of Akaal Purakh. The Vedas sing the praises of the formless One. The form is without pain. That formless One took a birth as Guru Nanak Dev ji, the giver of Anand. Guru Angad ji, Guru Amardas ji, Guru Ramdas ji, Guru Arjan ji and Guru Hargobind ji are that same form. Guru Har Rai ji, Guru Harkrishan ji are the same Jot. The Jot that gave Mukti, came into Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji. The Jot then came into Guru Gobind Singh ji. I bow to all 10 Gurus with humility.
Sri Kalgidhar ji’s Katha is the peace giver to the listeners. I begin the 5th Rut now. Listen oh listeners.
In this way Guru Gobind Singh ji created the Khalsa Panth. He gave them Amrit and made them wear the blue clothes and wore blue himself. He made them brave and fought battles. Sangat from different lands came, bringing expensive gifts for Guru ji and the Khalsa. The Sangat was now known not to be disturbed. No one dared to bother them as they travelled. Since Kalmot was destroyed, no village bothered the Sangat. They did not hate them nor did they bother them. They were actually afraid of the Sangat. They would speak softly to them: “Guru ji is a strong and powerful warrior. He is undefeated. He is called “Muraila Guru,” the killer Guru.” This name of Guru ji was known for a long time. Whoever bothered the Sangat, they were calling for their death.
From the West, the Sangat came to see Guru ji. They brought a lot of money and gifts for Guru ji. They set up camp at Anandpur. They spent the night and got up the next morning. They bathed and got ready. Guru ji’s court was in session. Guru ji came into the Darbar, wearing royal clothes and weapons. The Khalsa came. They had weapons in their Kumerkassa: guns, swords and shields. The Mevra went to the Sangat to inform them of the Darbar being in session: “come see Guru ji, who have come from afar.” The Sangat would be happy to hear this. They would get ready and grab their gifts, heading to the Darbar.
Among the Sangat of the west, was a Kshatriya who brought his daughter to give to the Guru. He was of the Rava clan (Bhai Kaan Singh ji Nabha says that it was the Vassi clan) from Rohtaas. He had his daughter placed in a Dholi (Palanquin). His name was Bhai Ramu ji. Guru ji was in the Darbar. Sikhs came to do Darshan of Guru ji, placing their gifts at his feet. They bowed to Guru ji’s feet. Bhai Ramu ji came and stood in front of Guru ji with his hands folded. He said: “Guru ji, I come to your sanctuary. I have left every other hope in this world and come to you. I have brought my daughter to make her your servant. I have wished this for a long time. I was childless for a long time. The place of Guru Nanak Dev ji, Sri Choha Sahib, where he made water come out of the ground, I did an Ardaas there for a child. I said that if it be a girl, I will give her to Guru Gobind Singh ji. This was my wish. Guru Nanak Dev ji gave me a daughter. She will serve you forever. My ancestors and family will be blessed. Please fulfil my wish. I am your Sikh. I only ask from you.” Listening to the Sikh’s request, Guru ji spoke from his radiant mouth: “since I have made the Devi appear to make the Khalsa, I saw Mother Kalika, the Shakti of Akaal Purakh, and performed the Kumerkassa from the Grist life. I live a life of abstinence from physical relations. I follow Brahmacharj. The whole Panth knows this; this is no secret. For this reason, I can’t fulfill your wish.” The Sikh heard this and got worried. He was in a place of difficulty. He lowered his head and folded his hands. He was thinking, while being upset. He thought for a long time and said: “Prabhoo ji, this is a problem for me. This problem is giving me immense pain as a father. Since I’ve thought about this, I wanted to bring my daughter here to make her your daughter. Many Sikhs of our city also did the Ardaas with me. I have given my daughter to you. My whole city knows this. Every citizen in my city calls her “Mata ji.” They have been calling her Mata ji ever since she was born. They called her Mata ji as a baby. They had faith that she was going to be the wife of the Guru. The Desh I live in, this is well-known. They have been calling her Mata ji for her whole life of 17 years. I wanted to bring her before but brought her now. She is now older and cannot get married to anyone else. Everyone will refer to her as Mata ji. How can she marry anyone else? No one will marry her now as she is the mother of all. When she walks through the streets, people fold their hands and bow to her. We call her Mata ji too. Since your name has been tied to hers, she has been determined as the Mother. If she stays unmarried in my home, everyone in my city will be upset. Please accept my Ardaas: bless us. Please accept my daughter. If you have let go of Grist, my daughter will stay in the Guru’s home Kunwari. She will serve you. She wishes to serve you. She does Simran all the time and recites Gurbani. She recites Sukhmani Sahib, all the time. You know the love inside the hearts of your Sikhs. Please accept her. She has loved you for millions of births. (Dusht Daman ji’s name was Lokpal ji. Mata ji used to do Tapasya near Hazoor Sahib. She was the Avatar of Shakti) You are omniscient. See the love in our hearts. We are both standing here. Please bless her. Let her do your Seva. Rohtaas wishes for you to accept its daughter. All the Sikhs from our Desh have come here for this wish. We are all here to give her to you. The whole Sangat did Simran and Keertan on the way. They come with faith and devotion.” Bhai Ramu ji made his request with humility. Guru ji heard this and noticed Mata ji’s Tapasya. Hundreds of Sikhs from Rohtaas were standing, with their hands folded. Guru ji decided to fulfill their wish. Guru ji smiled and said: “your wishes will be fulfilled, but this Dholi will be the “Kunwara Dhola.” She will have the status of the Mata, but she will remain the “Kunwara Dhola.” (This term will not be defined as the definition has various interpretations) I have prepared for war and have done a Kumerkassa from the Grist lifestyle.” The people of Rohtaas heard this and were happy. They felt like they were given all the gifts of the world.
The Dholi of Mata ji was taken to the home where Mata Gujri ji lived. The Sangat told Mata Gujri ji and she accepted the Dhola. Her name was Mata Sahib Devi ji. She bowed to her mother-in-law and humbly sat at her feet. Mata Gujri ji blessed her.
For 5 more days, the Sangat of Rohtaas stayed there. They all left after that, leaving Mata Sahib Devi ji. Mata Sahib Devi ji made an oath: “I will only eat after doing Darshan of Guru ji.” She stayed true to her oath. On the days she didn’t see Guru ji, she did not eat. She was the Avatar of love. Guru Gobind Singh ji was omniscient and so he knew of her oath but she never spoke of it. He knew of her love. Because of this, he would be sure to see her at least once a day. He would come back home by the afternoon if he was busy. If for some reason, Guru ji didn’t come, she wouldn’t eat. In this way, Mata Sahib Devi ji spent her whole life in Simran and Seva.
One day when Guru ji came to meet Mata Sahib Devi ji, Mata ji bowed to him with great devotion, Guru ji said: “what is your wish?” Mata ji lowered her eyes and head. She folded her hands and spoke with great humility: “Prabhoo ji, I wish for a son. Nothing else. I wish to receive this by your blessing. I am a woman and wish to be a blessed mother. Just as my other sisters have the Sahibzadas, I wish to have a son as well.” Guru ji said: “this is a good wish! Forget one son, the whole Khalsa will be your offspring. You will have countless children. They will live forever. New ones will be born everyday. They will never be finished. All the Singhs are your sons. They will make your radiance grow. From this day forward, the Khalsa is your son. I have put the Khalsa in your lap. You will see their radiance grow. Your name will be immortal in this world. They will call you their mother. Be in bliss.” Mata Sahib Devi ji was in great bliss hearing this. She accepted this and folded her hands. She bowed her forehead and went back to her home. She said to herself with great joy: “I am a mother now!”
5-2 Bhai Jagga Singh the Faithful Servant
There was one faithful Sikh who did the Seva of Guru ji, day and night. He loved the feet of Guru ji. He would hold a fan and waive it towards Guru ji. He would keep looking at Guru ji with love. He would look for Seva to do. His name was Bhai Jagga Singh ji. We would wash Guru ji’s feet and massage them. He would clean Guru ji’s shoes and place them in front of Guru ji to wear. The other Sevadaars would see this and become jealous. They would speak harshly to him when Guru ji would be away from him. They couldn’t tolerate him and wanted Bhai Jagga Singh ji to run away. They treated him like a bad relative. All of the Sevadaars planned to make his life difficult. Bhai Jagga Singh ji didn’t care what the others said. He was drenched in love and did Seva with devotion. He wouldn’t talk too much. He lived to do Seva of Guru ji. That’s all he liked and wanted. His eyes would gleam seeing Guru ji; like a lotus flower blooming seeing the sun. He would close his eyes and do Simran when Guru ji was away from his sight. When he would see Guru ji’s moon-like face, his eyes would stare at Guru ji like a Chakor. Guru ji, the omniscient one, knew of Bhai Jagga Singh ji’s love. It was like Vishnu ji knowing his Bhagat’s Bhagti.
One day, Guru ji was laying on the bed with a sheet over his face. The Sevadaars thought that Guru ji was asleep. The Guru never sleeps, as the Guru is omnipresent. The Sevadaars spoke harshly to Bhai Jagga Singh ji: “you are always eager to do Guru ji’s Seva and try to get ahead. Are you trying to push us all away? You are trying to impress Guru ji. Many came before you and tried to take the Seva from us. We made them run away. They went home. Now it’s your turn. Watch how we make you run away. You do Guru ji’s Seva and try to be the leader.” Bhai Jagga Singh ji heard this but didn’t say anything. He continued to do Seva. His mind was pure by the Seva that he did. Guru ji was listening to everything but remained quiet. He thought to himself: “these Sevadaars have no devotion in them.” Everyone rested the night.
Guru ji woke up at Amritvela and did his daily routines. Guru ji remembered what happened to Bhai Jagga Singh ji at night and called him over during the morning Divaan. Guru ji asked him: “what did the Sevadaars say to you? Tell me what they said. I heard them speak harshly to you. Tell me who was it that spoke to you?” Bhai Jagga Singh ji folded his hands and said: “Prabhoo ji, nobody said anything to me. No one spoke harshly to me. Why would they be jealous of me? I only wish to have your blessings. Nobody can take your blessings away from me. I have no other desire in my heart.” Guru ji heard Bhai Jagga Singh ji speak and called the other Servants to the Divaan. Guru ji had them all sit close to him. Guru ji called for a pot full of water, a stone and a Pataasaa. Guru ji said to one of the Servants: “put this stone and Pataasaa into the pot of water. Leave this here for 3 hours.” This was done in front of everyone. Guru ji started thinking of something else and directed his attention elsewhere.
After 3 hours, Guru ji spoke to his servants: “take the stone and Pataasaa out of the water.” When the Sevadaar put his hand into the pot, he took the stone out but the Pataasaa mixed into the water. The Pataasaa was no where to be found. Guru ji wanted everyone to take note of this event. Guru ji said: “the soft and sweet Pataasaa mixed into the water and became one with it. It no longer exists and made the water sweet. The hard stone had no taste. Water did not enter the stone. My Sevadaars are like the stones. Listen Khalsa, understand this, this is the teaching of deep Sikhi. These Sevadaars have been with me for many years but they didn’t even pick up one virtue. Their minds did not become pure. They are filled with pride. Sikhs that come from far away lands, they have faith and devotion in their minds. They emerge with the Guru, like the Pataasaa dissolved in the water. The Manmukhs are like frogs who live in the water but don’t know the lotus. The Manmukhs don’t know the Guru. They eat the dirt in the water. They see the faults of others. They do not experience the fragrance of the Gyaan, the Brahmgyaan. Their pain is not dispelled. The faithful stay away from the Guru like the bee stays away from water. They eventually find the Guru and take the Aatam Gyaan right away. The bee experiences the virtues of the lotus and goes away. They find the good things and don’t look at the bad things. The Manmukhs are like crows, the Gurmukhs are like swans. The crows eat filth and the swan eats pearls. Leeches suck blood from the udder of a cow but do not know the greatness of the milk.” Guru ji made many references and scolded his servants who were jealous of Bhai Jagga Singh ji. Guru ji said: “my faithful Sikh, Bhai Jagga Singh, was doing Seva. You fools were jealous of him. If I see this again, I will punish you all.” Guru ji had Bhai Jagga Singh ji sit close to him and gave him respect. He appreciated Bhai Jagga Singh ji not getting angry. The Sevadaars folded their hands and asked for forgiveness. They bowed to Guru ji’s feet and had their sins forgiven. They instilled the words of Guru ji in their hearts. In this way Guru ji gave wisdom to the Sikhs.
The omniscient master was in Anandpur. Bheem Chand, the corrupt, was in pain, fighting Guru ji. He called a truce with Guru ji but he still had hatred for Guru ji. He had a meeting with his ministers and said: “the battle has calmed down but I am concerned at how fast the Khalsa is growing. We can’t fight the Guru now. He can kill thousands of warriors at once. His Sikhs are too fierce. Waging war is expensive. We need to keep peace with the Guru. When we get a chance, we will kill the Guru or kick him out of Anandpur. This is the political strategy of “Shaam,” to be friends. If this doesn’t work, then we will use money, “Dhaam,” to divide his people. We are kings, we should use politics. If peace works, then what is the use to fight? Let’s send an ambassador to the Guru who can give us news on a daily basis. The Singhs still cause damage to our areas. They hunt and take our things. If our ambassador is there, he will prevent them from doing this. Let’s send a wise person to Anandpur and keep peace with the Guru.” Bheem Chand looked around and noticed Pamma “Maachar” (a person who consumes a lot of opium) who was clever. He was instructed by Bheem Chand: “stay in Anandpur and keep watch. Stay alert and provide me the updates from Anandpur. When I see the right time, I will kick the Guru out of Anandpur and destroy the city.” In this way, Bheem Chand gave corrupt instructions to Pamma Purohit. He sent expensive gifts for Guru ji with Pamma. A strong white horse with a beautiful saddle was sent for Guru ji. Two expensive and unique rifles were sent as well. Bheem Chand said to Pamma: “keep your hands folded in front of the Guru. Be wise.” He gave Pamma instructions in this way.
Pamma mounted his horse and went to Anandpur. He came to see Guru ji once he came. He had a messenger sent before of his arrival. A room was already prepared for him. Sevadaars were sent to serve him. Guru ji was wise in politics and reacted accordingly. Pamma said to Guru ji: “I will stay with you forever. Bheem Chand has sent me to serve you. I have brought you this horse and these rifles. The Raja bows to your feet.” He explained the reason for his arrival. Guru ji, along with the whole Sangat and family heard this. Pamma spent the night in his room. In the morning, his gifts were seen.
5-3 Pamma the Trickster lives as an Ambassador
Satguru ji was in his court with the great and powerful Khalsa present. Sodhis: Baba Gulab Singh ji, Baba Shyam Singh ji; Bedis: Baba Kaladhari ji and other senior Sikhs sat beside Guru ji like Devatas. Guru ji was adorning the court like Inder adorning the court of the Devatas. Pamma Maachar was called by Guru ji. Pamma brought the gifts from Bheem Chand. He had brought a nice strong horse and 2 rifles. Guru ji looked at everything. Pamma folded his hands and bowed to Guru ji. He sat down in the Divaan with corruption in this heart. He said to Guru ji: “Guru ji, Raja Bheem Chand has sent me and wants to be on friendly terms. He has forgotten the past because he knows you are the true Guru. He wants be on good terms with you, full of love.” Guru ji heard the deceitful words and looked towards Pamma. Guru ji said:
Sri Mukhvaak:
Pamma Vizeer, Aakhar Bipeer (Pamma is without a Guru).
Baaman Ka Bol, Samaj bin Sol (this Brahmin’s words are only good for the unwise)
Rajput ki Jaat, Na Meet Sadhoo na Taat Maat. (The Rajputs are no friends of Sadhoos, nor are they anyone’s parents)
Salok M: 1..
If blood stains the clothes, the clothes are considered impure..
If a person drinks the blood of humans (cheating them and looting them), how can their hearts be without filth..
(SGGS 140)
When Pamma heard Guru ji’s word full of skepticism, Pamma gave a response: “listen Prabhoo, if a person makes a mistake, regrets it and then comes to the saint’s sanctuary, the saint should not reject them. This is what Gurus like you say.” The Sodhis and the Bedis that were sitting there, they heard the discussion. They spoke up: “Maharaj, this is the best practise. What you said is true about this Brahmin and the Rajputs, but also think about all the battles that you have fought. To fight all the time is not good. In battle, there is a lot of death and damage. War is never good. Let’s end the war and call a truce. If they have come for truce, this is what everyone wants. There have been battles and thousands of warriors have died.” Listening to the Sodhis and Bedis, Guru ji spoke again:
Sri Mukhvaak
Adik Bhallaa Rajput kul, jinna Janma shatur (these Rajputs’ family, their own born become their enemy)
Paalanharia maar kai, poot meet sir katar (the ones that raise them, they kill their own friends and sons for kingdom)
These Paharis cannot do good for anyone. They always want to destroy others. If you want to deal with them, understand them well before you trust them. If trouble comes to them, they become Sadhoos and cheat their own fathers. If there is food, milk and rice in your home and you have faith, then Paharis will become your friends. When you need them, they won’t give you anything like a barren woman. They speak with love but they are full of doubt and fraud. They want to cheat everyone. They are only good to take and eat. They run away from problems. Listen all, you want to be friends with them, they cheat their one father. We have fought them; how will they be our friends? A bitter tumbi can never become sweet, even if placed in sugar. A dog’s tail can never be straightened even if placed in a pipe. That is its nature. It can’t be changed. What should I say? You already know this. You know how many times we fought them. This is not a good thing.” Hearing Guru ji, everyone said: “truce seems good right now. They want to be friends now.” Guru ji went quiet then. Everyone said the same thing and Guru ji did not respond.
Pamma the clever, stayed in Anandpur and met Guru ji everyday. He kept his corrupt ways and collected all the information he could get. He noted everything. He was clever and smart. He would meet all the leaders and say sweet words to them. He made relations with everyone. Guru ji knew him well but he pretended to be his friend. Guru ji made it look like that he was good with him. Guru ji spoke to him with respect in love. Pamma would speak sweetly but had fraud in his mind. He sent daily reports to Bheem Chand. He wrote about the traditions and whoever came there. He told Bheem Chand: “the Guru is in my control now. He speaks to me with love and respect. I can make him do all the things I need. I can give people’s references to Guru ji.” Bheem Chand read this letter and was happy. He said: “it’s good that the Guru is in our control.”
Pamma started to live like the Sikhs. He recited Bani and did Seva. He got his work done by making requests. He did what Guru ji said. One day, he wrote a letter to Bheem Chand: “the Guru has 2 nice horses. Send a thief to get the horses.” He gave the information to Bheem Chand. Bheem Chand sent 2 thieves at night. The foolish thieves came and stole the horses from the stable. They gave the horses to Bheem Chand. Bheem Chand saw the horses and got happy.
Pamma then started to look for Guru ji’s treasury, where the money and gold was kept. He noticed all the wealth. He wore clothes like a Sadhoo but was a cheat. Guru ji knew everything but he wanted Pamma to play his game. Pamma spoke to the Sodhis and Bedis and became their friend. He entertained them. He was like a golden cup with poison in it. Just as a flamingo wears white clothes, stands on one leg in the water; it does not remember the Lord but it looks to catch fish. He wanted to loot Guru ji. He kept an eye on all the activities of the Guru’s home. He noticed everyone’s pay. He noticed how much was spent on Langar and other things. He took note where all the money went. He noted all the food storage and where it came from. He kept a track of all the ghee and sugar that came. He noted the money spent on bullets and gunpowder. He counted the weapons in the armory and what the Singhs had. He wrote down the activities of the warriors; how many were Khalsa, Hindus and Muslims. Guru ji’s subjects were diverse. He sent all the information to Bheem Chand.
One day, Pamma told the Sikhs that Guru ji told him that the Turks were coming to fight. Pamma had some how called the Turk army to come fight at Anandpur. Pamma also wrote a letter to Bheem Chand: “the Turks have attacked Anandpur. We should help Guru ji.” This letter was sent to Bheem Chand. He wanted to have the army of Paharis camp near Anandpur, to show that they were there to help Guru ji. He actually wanted to dishearten the Sikhs. He wanted to have the army run away during battle and make sure Guru ji loses. These fools did not know that Parmeshwar cannot be cheated. The Turks that were called deceitfully, got scared and ran off without a fight. Guru ji showed the Turks the Shaheed army. They got scared. Guru ji gave leave to the Pahari army, since there was no fight. The Paharis made it look like they were Guru ji’s friends. They said: “we are your servants.” They showed devotion like the Sikhs, but they were like hunters, bowing to wait for an opportunity.
One day, Pamma kept asking Guru ji to go hunting: “let’s go to the jungle and hunt. There are a lot of deer and wild bore.” He convinced Guru ji and the Khalsa to go hunting. They hunted in the jungle. Pamma took Guru ji far away. Pamma sent notices to the Paharis that Guru ji was in the area: “send some warriors to welcome Guru ji.” Bheem Chand collected his warriors and sent them to where Pamma was. Guru ji was about 25 miles away from Anandpur. Bheem Chand’s people came to meet Guru ji there. They bowed to Guru ji’s feet. They showed Guru ji a better place to hunt. They took Guru ji to the thick of the jungle. 2 big lions came. The Rajputs said to Guru ji: “Prabhoo, stay here. Watch us hunt these lions. We will fight with our swords and shields. Either they will kill us or we will kill them.” They wanted to show Guru ji their strength. The Rajputs went to fight the lions. They stopped the lions with their shields and struck them with their swords. They killed the lions. Kalgidhar ji was happy to see this as Guru ji belonged to everyone. Guru ji appreciated warrior skills, whether friend or foe. Guru ji gave the warriors Siropas, weapons and money. Guru ji set up camp in the jungle. The hunted animals were cooked to make Mahaprashaad. Guru ji and the Khalsa ate the food. The Rajputs bowed and left. Guru ji came back to Anandpur with the Khalsa. Guru ji got off his horse and rested. Saying Guru ji’s name, makes the problems go away.
5-4 The Mela of Rewalsar
In this way, Pamma lived in Anandpur with deceit in his mind. He wore the uniform of Sikhs and acted like them. Internally, he wished to cause harm to Guru ji. In the Divaan of Guru ji, he would come and bow before sitting down. Many discussions would happen as many scholars lived with Guru ji. These scholars were the cream of all the scholars in Hindustan. Pamma would try to show off his intellect. He said: “I want to bring the Rajas here to clear up any doubts. Let’s have discussions of peace. It would be good if you go hunting and meet the Rajas there. We can stay there for 4 or 5 days. We can meet all the Rajas that want to meet with you and clear everything up. Without meeting, we can’t rid of the misunderstandings. You are omniscient, please clear everything up. Please bless me and go hunting with me. You fulfill everyone’s wish. Fulfill the wishes of the Rajas. The Rajas all want to bow to your lotus feet. Either we should call them here or we should go there to solve everything.”
It was time for the Mela of Rewalsar. This place was a Teerath from Satyuga. Many people get together for this Mela to bathe. Pamma said to Guru ji: “let’s go to the Mela. When everyone hears of your coming, the other Rajas will leave all their tasks to see you there. They will come to the Mela and bow to your feet. They will become your Sikhs. You are the Guru of the world and I believe they will make you their Guru. They will give you gifts there. Your glory will spread because of this.” The Singhs heard this and said: “Prabhoo ji, there will be many people there. We have heard that the glory of the Teerath is mentioned in the Vedas and Shastras. People talk about it too. We have heard that the rocks float in the water there. This is an amazing thing that we want to see. We want to see the mountains float there.” Mata Gujri ji came to the Divaan in the meantime and said to Guru ji: “let’s go son! I want to see Rewalsar as well. I have heard about that place a long time ago. The Sarovar there is very deep. So deep that the bottom cannot be found. The glory of this Teerath is from Satyuga. I am old and this is my wish to bathe at the Teerath and give donations there.”
When Guru ji went home, Mata Jeeto ji and Mata Sundri ji folded their hands and said: “Prabhoo ji, we want to go to the Teerath of Rewalsar. Please take us there. We want to bathe in the Sarovar where rocks float.” (The interpretation of this can also be stated as “saved” or “blessed” instead of floating. It is in fact a metaphor regarding the rocks. The Teerath is said to be so holy, that whoever bathes in the Sarovar, is blessed. Even rocks are blessed.) Baba Ajit Singh ji came and said: “I wish to go to Rewalsar as well, Pithaji.” The omniscient Guru knew that Pamma wanted to conspire against him. That is why he wanted to take Guru ji to Rewalsar. Guru ji thought to himself, “Pamma wants me to meet the Rajas, due to some political plot, but now the family wants to go too. The Khalsa wants to go as well. We should go now.” Guru ji didn’t speak about the conspired plot and decided to go anyways as the family wanted to go for spiritual purposes. Guru ji gave the command to get ready.
Guru ji came to his Darbar and sat down. There was a hostler (stableman) named Bhai Madan Singh ji who was from the caste of Chumaars. He was a powerful Sikh who had received many powers. (He was the first Shaheed of the battle of Chamkaur, who was the gatekeeper of the fort.) By Seva and Simran, he had the power of foresight. He was able to see the past, present and future. He found out what the plot was. He knew that Pamma and the Rajas were conspiring. Bhai Madan Singh ji stayed untidy as he worked in the stables. He was thought to be a “Mastana.” He roared in the Darbar: “karayga so bharayga, Guru ka ki karayga. Sevak te kaaj sarayga. Dusman Dokhi Murayga. One shall pay for their actions. What can they ruin of the Guru? Only Servants will fulfill the Seva. The enemy shall die.” The Singhs in the Darbar heard this and got angry. They said: “what is this nonsense you speak? We had to convince Guru ji to go. Why are you talking about obstacles? The Sangat wants to go to the Teerath and bathe. Why are you trying to stop this?” Bhai Madan Singh ji was seeing what the Singhs and the family wasn’t. He just smiled and didn’t get angry. Guru ji understood that the Singhs didn’t see what Bhai Madan Singh ji was seeing. Guru ji said: “the Sevadaar of the horses is not lying. The horse that I ride, he has served that horse for 12 months, tolerating heat and cold. He served without desire. He served the horse of the Satguru. Serving the Guru’s horses and cows gives one many powers. He can see past, present and future. You get mad at him but he is speaking because he knows what is going to happen.” Guru ji looked towards Bhai Madan Singh ji and said: “Ghoray di Seva kar. Hovaygi so jurr. Guru da ghar. Raakhaa Saachaa Satguru. Sikha, chinta na kar. Chup ka sama sar. Do the Seva of the horses. What will happen, tolerate it. It is the Guru’s home. The true Satguru is the protector. Oh Sikh, don’t worry. Stay quiet.”
Guru ji made preparations to go. The horses were saddled. Guru ji’s 5 horses were saddled with golden saddles. They were all dressed up for Guru ji. The Khalsa was in attention and ready to go. The 3 mothers sat in palanquins. Mata Gujri ji sat in her palanquin as well. They all left Anandpur. The 4 Sahibzadas went along as well. Thousands of Sikhs went with the Vaheer. The Khalsa army was mounted and travelled the harsh pathways of the mountainous area. It was high and low roads that they all took. Kalgidhar ji made his way to Rewalsar, the Rajas all found out. The Ranjit Nagara was sounding. The Rajas all got ready to go to the Mela. The Raja of Srinagar, Nadhaun, Bhagyaal, Mandi, Kamghar (Ghamand Chand, the warrior), Bheem Chand of Kahloor, Bhoop Chand of Handoor, Bir Singh of Jaspal, the Raja of Basaihari, Kuloo and Kaithal along with the other Rajas came. The ones that fought battles with Guru ji for the last 20 years, they had been dealt with on the battlefield. They were coming to see Guru ji. Many warriors came with the Rajas to see Guru ji. They travelled the mountains to come to Rewalsar. They all gathered and the Teerath.
Guru ji set up camp near the Sarovar. The Rajas all arrived after and camped where they found places. They set up camp with joy. They ate and slept the night. The next morning, they bathed and got ready at the Sarovar. All the Rajas sent messengers to Guru ji to ask for his Darshan. Pamma was walking around, looking to gain popularity. He was trying to look important and wanted to show everyone that he was a famous and powerful person with a lot of say. Guru ji then said a command: “lay out a muslin padding with rugs and tarps. Make the Darbar beautiful. It should be good for thousands to sit in.” The Sevadaars got to work right away. The tent was pitched with golden posts. Pearl strands hung from the sides. The Canopy had silk ropes. The Canopy was very expensive with golden wires and gems. The tent was really big. The Khalsa first came into the Darbar. They were dressed beautifully and had their weapons fastened. They were radiant in Guru ji’s Darbar. They looked like lions. Guru ji did his Nitnem and wore a Chola made of fine silk. The hilt of his sword was made of gold with cut diamonds. The blade was made of Faulaad. Guru ji was ready like a lion. He had a nice Dastaar with a gem-filled Jigha. The Kalgi would sway as Guru ji moved. Pearl strands hung from the Kalgi. The quiver of Guru ji had diamonds in it. The arrows were made of Faulaad. He held a bow of 9 Tonka power. The two sides were made of gold. A big bed was laid with a tight sheet fastened to the legs. A white sheet was laid out. It was Guru ji’s throne. The master came and sat on it. Everyone got up as Guru ji came. Chaurs were waived over Guru ji’s head. They looked like Mansarovar swans trying to eat the pearls in Guru ji’s Kalgi. It looked like they would get scared of Guru ji’s radiance as they came close. In this way the Divaan was ready. He looked like Inder amongst the Devatas; like Kuber amongst the powers; like Ram Chander ji’s Darbar in Ayodhya; like Govind amongst the 560,000,000 Yadavs; that is how Guru Gobind Singh ji was looking radiant amongst the Singhs. The Chobdhaars held golden maces. The Khalsa was mesmerized by Guru ji’s radiance. They were drenched in his love.
5-5 Meeting the Rajas in Rewalsar/ the Princess of Chambial
The Pahari Rajas came with their armies. They were happy to see Kalgidhar ji. They placed their gifts in front of Guruji and bowed to his feet. They brought horses for Guru ji with golden saddles. They brought bows, riffles, shields and swords from foreign lands. They were very expensive. The Rajas were wearing expensive weapons as well as Guru ji. The Rajas sat close to Guru ji. They kept looking at the handsome and radiance appearance of Guru ji. Kamadeva couldn’t be more handsome than Guru ji. It looked like all of the beauty in the universe was collected and sat in the form of the Guru. All of the skills of a warrior and a saint were present in Guru ji. The supreme skills resided in the form of Guru Gobind Singh ji. He was the most radiant saint ever. He was illuminating in the Darbar. The people who saw him were mesmerized by him. For a long time, people wanted to see Guru ji. The people that came, they were amazed. Guru ji asked how everyone was. Everyone responded that they were blessed by Guru ji’s blessing. Other discussions took place with the Rajas. They wanted to speak to him. Bheem Chand and the other Pahari Rajas were sitting with Guru ji. Bhoop Chand brought a lot of things. Other kings came as well. Some greater than others. They were all happy, hearing Guru ji speak. Some met Guru ji for the first time. They folded their hands and said: “we have heard of Satguru ji’s radiance before. He is way more than what we heard. We heard that he is handsome. That is true. Our lives are blessed for seeing him today.” The Rajput and Pahari Rajas all said: “we are blessed to see you today. Guru Nanak Dev ji’s throne is great. You are his form.” The Rajas spoke for about 3 hours. They didn’t want to leave. Guru ji did Tapasya for 72 Cycles of all 4 Yugas. The radiance was too great for everyone. The Rajas wanted to keep sitting and listening to Guru ji. They kept praising Guru ji. They said: “we are all your Sikhs. Make us your servants and shower your love on us. Meeting you, we will not be visited by Jumms. Please remember us and think of us as your own. Please forgive us for our past mistakes. We are limited people. We are unwise. We caused problems with you but you are forgiving. You are omnipotent.” In this way they spoke big words but Guru ji understood their treachery. The Rajas all bowed and left to their camps.
The queens of the Rajas got together and wanted to do Darshan of Guru Gobind Singh ji. They asked their husbands as they wanted permission to see Guru ji. They got permission and came to see Dashmesh Pitaji. They brought fruit and clothes for the mothers. They came and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. Guru ji’s face was like the full moon without the craters. The queens all looked at Guru ji like Chakors looking at the moon. The form of Guru ji was like the sun and the queens’ eyes were blooming like the lotus flowers. For an instance, the queens forgot who they were, as Guru ji’s calm and holy form was overpowering for them. The queens were filled with joy, seeing him. They said to each other: “we have heard that Krishan ji was very handsome. (Krishan ji had 16 Shingaars, 32 Lakshans and 64 Kalahs) whoever met Krishan ji, they would keep looking at him. This is what the Puranas say. Krishan ji can’t be more handsome than Guru Gobind Singh ji. Kamadeva is nothing in front of Guru ji. Shivji burned Kamadeva. Guru ji’s eyes are so beautiful and filled with respect. The lotus flowers and the Mamola are nothing in front of his eyes. Those women are blessed who are his wives. They serve him and speak to him with joy. We have heard that the Guru of Anandpur is the most handsome. We wanted to see him. We are fortunate to see him.” The queens were caught in Guru ji’s radiance like fish caught in a net; like a doe caught in a trap. They kept staring at Guru ji without blinking. They said to each other again: “who knows when we will see him again.” The queens stayed for a while. The elder queens understood that the younger ones were mesmerized by Guru ji. They thought it best to leave. They got up and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. The other queens got up, hesitantly. They were bound by their respect and shyness. When the queens left, singing Guru ji’s praises, they left their minds with Guru ji. They could only think of him.
The Pahari Raja of Chamba had a wise daughter. The princess of Chamba was unmarried. She was a very pretty girl, adorned with the virtues of a “Chitrani” woman (there are 4 types of women- Hansini, Sunkhni, Padamani and Chitrani). She was a great poet and well-educated in the Shastras. She knew the Shingaar Granths and Chand Shasters. She knew the Pingala Shastras. She heard that Guru ji was a great poet and had 52 poets in his Darbar. She heard that Guru ji was a master at Chands and Svaiyas. She would read Guru Gobind Singh ji’s Bani and be filled with joy. (The first Saroop of Dasam Guru Granth Sahib ji, that didn’t have Zafarnama in it, was given to this princess by Guru ji) She would read poems in Shingaar Ras and other Rases. Guru ji wrote Bani in all the Rases. He was very particular in the minor details of the Bani’s structure. He brought out Rudra Ras and Shingaar Ras. The princess read Guru ji’s Bani with love and joy. She wanted to see Guru ji. She got permission from her father to see Guru ji. She wrote a letter to Guru ji with great humility. She praised Guru ji in the letter and sent it to Guru ji via a maid.
The letter came to Guru ji which he opened and read. There was a riddle in the letter: “sara pauna, dooja ghouna? Nar Naari the dono bhauna. Kuch Khadha kuch lai ke sauna. Uttar deo Guru ji kauna? (What is complete, what is three quarters? What is duality? Men and women, what is to become of them? What is consumption and what is sleep? Tell me your answer Guru ji, who are they?)” Guru ji read this and wrote a response with his great and infinite wisdom: “jano sara dev deh, pauna maanas deh. Dubida dooji kari ghavan. Nar Naari lag hooe khe. Ubhay lok bhaunda firay, kujh khada kharch ja maal. Prulay bhae sauna huua, uttar tumara Baal. (Akaal Purakh is complete. The human body is 75%. Doubt is duality which makes one come back. The bodies of men and women become dust. The Jeev Aatma wanders through many worlds, eating and spending. Destructions happens and one is in deep sleep. This is your answer oh child.)”
The maid took the response back to the princess. The princess read the letter and was happy. She already wanted to see Guru ji but now she was anxious to see him. She asked her father to go: “I want to see Guru ji.” She got his permission and went to see Guru ji.
The princess came to where Guru ji was. She folded her hands and bowed. Guru ji was holding a bow and an arrow in his hands. Guru ji touched the back of the princess with his bow. The princess was surprised to see this and said to Guru ji: “why did you not place your hand on my back for your blessings, oh Guru Master? I have great love and devotion for you in my heart. Why do you not see me as your servant?” Guru ji responded to her and wanted everyone to know: “you were a Turkani in your last birth. You were Aurangzeb’s Begum. Your body had become impure. A Ghatt of the Yamuna, where Krishan ji stayed after killing Kuns, you bathed there on a special day. When you left your body and were re-born as a Hindu, because you bathed in the Yamuna. You didn’t know this but you still had the traits of a Turkani in you. For this reason, I did not touch you. I blessed you with my bow. The faith that you bring to me, you will be rewarded for. Listen, in the Jungle Desh, a place called Damdama will be made. Dhalla Brar lives there. You will leave this body in a few days and be born in the Desh of Dhalla. You will be part of Dhalla’s family. My Sikhs will come there and you will do their Seva with devotion. I will bless you then. I will give you my Darshan then.” In this way when Guru ji blessed her, she was amazed. She heard this and bowed to Guru ji many times. She saw Guru ji as the master of the 3 Loks and was devoted to him. She stayed with Guru ji for a while. When she left, she kept Guru ji’s form in her heart. She did not get married and did Bhagti for the rest of her days. She abstained from the pleasures of life and did Simran of the Guru. After a few days, she died and left her body. She was born in the Malva Desh to Sikh parents. She was married to Bhai Dhalla Brar. Whatever Guru ji said, happened. When Prabhoo ji came to Malva, he set up camp there. The people of the Pahari area came there with devotion.
