4-31 Bhai Asa Singh
The glory of Guru Gobind Singh ji’s greatness spread in the world: “he made the Khalsa which is the supreme. The Paharis were defeated by the Khalsa. The Pahari Rajas all attacked together with their subjects and warriors. 300,000 soldiers were gathered to attack Guru ji in Anandpur. They brought a drunken elephant and used their full strength to attack; but the Khalsa, few in numbers, stopped the elephant. The greatest warriors were mixed into the dust. The Paharis turned yellow and ran away. Most of the Paharis were killed by their own elephant. They couldn’t face the Singhs.” People talked: “the Paharis have gone mad. They were supposed to bow to the Guru, not fight him. The fool, Bheem Chand, battled Guru Gobind Singh ji, the form of Akaal Purakh who thinks of saving the world. First of all, it was the throne of Guru Nanak Dev ji that saved the universe. The 9 Khands bow to him. All of the powers are in this home. Peers and Meers bow to this throne. Secondly, Guru Gobind Singh ji made the Shakti of Akaal Purakh, Kalika, appear before him when he was going to create the Khalsa. Prabhoo took an Avatar as Guru Gobind Singh ji to save the Hindu Dharma. Guru ji can create and destroy the universe with one word. After having so much power, Guru ji still lives like a human and accepts the will of Akaal Purakh. Guru ji was to wage war on the Turks who destroyed the Mandirs and forced conversions on to the Hindus and other religions; but these Pahari Rajas didn’t understand anything. They were fools. If the Paharis wanted to live in joy, they should have bowed to Guru ji’s feet and received the joys of both worlds. What could they do? They didn’t have the good karma required for that. They will be in pain in both worlds now. Their kingdoms will be destroyed. They will go to Hell after dying. Guru ji is great! He gave Amrit to the low castes. He made the poor, weak and low castes into warriors. They will be praised in the world. They will enjoy joy in both worlds. They will be given higher education and become wise.”
Bheem Chand was upset at listening to what people had to say. He sent his ministers to the Turks. He sent them to Sooba Sirhind, Sooba Lahore and everywhere else. He sent horses with golden and silver saddles. He sent expensive gifts and money to ask for their help. The Sooba of Sirhind, the most powerful Sooba, who had 52 districts in his command, Sooba Wazir Khan, was given a lot of money and gifts. Bheem Chand bribed him to be on his side. He sent him a message: “I am your servant. Guru Gobind Singh ji is getting powerful by the day. His Singhs are increasing in numbers by the day. If he defeats us and takes our kingdom, you’re only 50 km away. He will take your kingdom next. Right now, his power is young and can be destroyed. If we join forces, we can defeat the Guru. We can surround Anandpur and kick the Guru out. The Emperor’s army came with Paindey Khan along with Dina Beg. The Guru killed Paindey Khan and made Dina Beg run away. Let’s make an effort. I am your friend. Please help us. Bring your army quickly and make the Guru run away. It will be a favor to us. The Guru is a bigger enemy for you. He wants to destroy the kingdom of the Turks. Why are you sitting without worrying? The Guru will ruin things for you.” Bheem Chand sent similar letters to other Soobas and Delhi. He sent gifts and money along with his Prime Minister to the south, where Aurangzeb was. (Aurangzeb couldn’t stay in Delhi as per Shaheed Bhai Mati Das ji’s warning. Bhai Mati Das ji’s soul threatened Aurangzeb that if he slept in Delhi again, he would be haunted by the Shaheeds.) Bheem Chand begged for help in his letters. He became their slave. He was in a desperate state, being a Bemukh from the Guru. If he bowed to the Guru, he could have become the Emperor. His state became so pitiful that he sent his daughters to the Soobas and kings to be their concubines in return for help. Wherever the ministers went, they cried to the Soobas and said: “the Guru will kill us. He is dangerous.” They went to the Emperor in Ahmednagar. They said: “we have been looted. Guru Gobind Singh ji has caused chaos in the Pahari area. He destroyed our established homes.” They had the Sooba of Delhi right a letter of recommendation to the Emperor. Wazir Khan sent his messengers to Aurangzeb about the situation as well. Aurangzeb read all the complaints and became angry. He said: “tell the Sooba of Sirhind to take my army and fight the Guru. Give Anandpur to Bheem Chand after fighting Guru Gobind Singh ji. Tell the Guru not to fight anymore. Tell him not to keep an army or weapons. He should live like a saint. We won’t let him live Anandpur if he keeps an army.
In Anandpur, scholars and poets would gather. The poets would praise Guru ji as the greatest poet. They would get a lot of rewards from Guru ji for showing their talents. Many great things happened in Anandpur. Sikhs came to visit with horses, weapons and money. Their wishes would be fulfilled. The damages that happened to the gardens, forts and Sarovars; they were all repaired. The buildings were renovated with gold and gems. Guru ji lived in his beautiful home in bliss. Pillars of gold with craftsmanship, looked beautiful. Peacocks adorned the gardens. The markets were ringing with customers again. The rain monsoons came and the peacocks sang and danced. The flowers blossomed from the rain. The wise scholars and skilled artists came to see Guru ji. Guru ji commanded the Sikhs: “prepare more weapons. We will need them. We will need canons, guns and swords. Bugdas, Khanjars, Saifs, Dudharas, guns, Chakars, arrows, Saangs, spears; prepare them.” The blacksmiths started to make the weapons. They prepared a canon. It was like the mouth of the Jumms. When it fired, it was like thunder. Arrows for Guru ji were made. The arrows had 1 Mohar of gold added to them. Many other weapons were made. Guru ji would give these weapons to the Singhs.
There was a Munshi named Bhai Asa Singh ji who would balance the ledgers of the Guru’s home. A poor person with a daughter, who was of age to be married, came to Bhai Asa Singh ji. He said to Bhai Asa Singh ji: “my daughter is of age to be married. Please loan me 500 Rajitpuns. I have heard that you are gracious. Only you can do this.” Bhai Asa Singh ji had compassion and so he wrote a Hundi for the poor person. He sent him to a Shahukaar to receive the money.
The poor person took the money and married his daughter. The Dholi left his home. After 6 months, the Sikh Shahukaar came to Guru ji and brought the Hundi. He said to Guru ji after bowing: “I gave 500 Rajitpuns after you sent this.” Guru ji said: “I didn’t write this. Bring the person who wrote this. Asa Singh has the seal. He must have written this.” Guru ji spoke with a little anger: “why did he write this Hundi without asking? He made a decision to give 500 Rajitpuns. Why did he do such a wrong thing?” The news reached Bhai Asa Singh ji in his home about Guru ji getting upset. Bhai Asa Singh ji got scared and stayed in his home. After a few days, Bhai Asa Singh ji wrote a few Dohras (Couplets) to Guru ji as his quill speaking:
Kalam Vaach Dohra: they blacken my mouth. If they do no favors and cheat others, I will then, take my revenge in court.
My chest is ripped in two; I cry when they write. I am only at rest when I am used for someone’s benefit.
“This is the way the quill speaks which you have given me. A poor Sikh came to me and asked me to give him money for the Guru’s sake. I couldn’t say no and wrote the hundi. Laxmi, land and money all serve you Guru ji.” Guru ji read this letter and was really happy. Guru ji called Bhai Asa Singh ji and tied a Dastaar on his head. Guru ji made Bhai Asa Singh ji return to work and gave him more blessings.
There was another Sikh writer named Saina. He made a mistake and ran away. He wrote a beautiful letter to Guru ji. Sri Guru ji called him back but the Sikh didn’t come, fearing Guru ji. He stayed with his relatives. He wrote a Dohra to Guru ji and made an excuse:
Dohra: Since the time I separated from you, I have been farming. Staying with the bulls, I am nothing but a Jatt now. (Implying that he was a scholarly writer when he was with Guru ji and now, he is unworthy.)
4-32 Cleaning the Shasters/ Dushera
The monsoon rains of Saavan and Bhadron passed and the season of Sharad came. The Sharaads came followed by the Navratas. People did the Pooja of the Devi at that time or played dramas depicting the life of Sri Ram Chander ji known as the “Ram Leela.” Sri Satguru ji commanded the Khalsa: “open the armoury and take out all of the weapons. Tell the Marwari Shiklighars to clean the weapons. Do the Pooja of the weapons after they are cleaned.” The armoury and expensive treasuries were opened. There were Lakhs of weapons in the treasuries. Teghas, Khandas, Saifs and Sirohis were taken out in the thousands. Neemchas, Kirpans, Tomars, Seekhchay, Misris, Gujaratis, Ilmanis, Halabhis, Kirchs, Maghribs, Janabhis, Jamdhars, Kataars, Chakars, Khanjars, Bichuas, Baangs, Pechkavajs and Teers: Badamchas, Tukas, Khappars, Ardchandra, Sailays, Meenmukhay, Naranch and others were taken. Lamchur rifles, pistols, and foreign weapons were taken out. The treasure of the Guru was laid out.
The Marwari Shiklighars cleaned the weapons. As they cleaned and polished them, they had to put their feet on the Shasters to clean them. Guru Gobind Sahib ji came out to inspect the Shasters. Guru ji said to the Shiklighars: “why are you disrespecting the Shasters with your feet? These Shasters are beloved to Akaal Purakh. Akaal Purakh holds the Kharag in the right hand. It is also in the flag of Akaal Purakh. The Shasters are the form of Aad Shakti, Sri Chandi ji. They should be worshipped. The Devatas, humans and Daynts (demons) are under the command of the Shasters. Clean them with respect.” After saying that, Guru ji went on ahead and sat in the Divaan. The Khalsa came to meet Guru ji and said their Fatehs. One of the Singhs said: “the Marwari Shiklighars which you assigned to clean the Shasters are sitting and holding the Shasters to their heads. They aren’t doing anything. Bhai Ram Singh Shiklighar is holding 10 swords on his head and just sitting there.” Guru ji laughed and went to the place where the Shasters were being cleaned. Guru ji said to Bhai Ram Singh: “why aren’t you doing the Seva of the Shasters? You’re sitting and wasting time.” Bhai Ram Singh Shiklighar responded: “Maharaj, it was your command to respect them. This is how we respect them. The Seva can only happen the way we were doing it before. We need to hold the Shasters between our toes to clean them. That’s the only we can do their Seva.” Guru ji laughed and said: “alright. You are excused. You are the servants of the Shasters, forever. Do the Seva with love. You will get all the joys you wish for. Your disrespect of holding the Shasters with your feet will be forgiven.” Bhai Ram Singh ji bowed to Guru ji after being blessed. He started to clean the Shaster and lived in joy. Other Shiklighars did the Seva and set the Shasters on a high Takhat.
Guru ji called for the materials required for Pooja. Because it was the Navratas, everyone started to do Pooja of the Shasters and Chandi Kalika Mai. The recitations of Chandi Charitar were done by all in Sanskrit and Vernacular languages. They were read during the Navratas. The Pooja of the Shasters happened with incense, sandalwood and showering of flowers. They placed garlands of flowers on to the Shasters. Guru ji took a golden Chaur and waived it over the Shasters. Sri Prabhoo ji did the Shaster Pooja and recited the Banis of Chandi. He sang the praises of the Shakti of Akaal Purakh:
I bow to the indestructible power that destroys the sinners and takes care of the saints. She saves all and is the doer. She is the ever-lighting jot. She gives wisdom and destroys the bad wisdom. She gives Ridhis, Siddhis and Bhuddi. Her eyes are bigger than the universe. She can scare the whole universe. She sees all. Whoever does her Jaap, their worries and fears are all gone. Inder is mesmerized by her. She gives peace to the mind. She destroyed Nishumb, Sunbh, Chand, Mund and the armies of the Asuras. Her teeth and molars are ferocious. She can crunch the suns and stars in a moment. She killed Mudhkaytab. Her radiance is always illuminating. Sarvatbheej (Rakatbheej) was killed by the Shakti. Her arms are all-powerful. The Shakti is the one that resides in the warriors. She is the strength of the warriors. She is the courage of the warriors. Her nails are sharp; her eyes are red. She shows her fierce form as the Kaal and kills all. She destroys all of the enemies. She knows the love of her servants and takes care of them. She is the mother of all. She wears a garland of skulls. I bow to her feet.
In this way the 107,000 names of Chandi (written by Guru ji) were recited by the Khalsa in front of Satguru Gobind Singh ji. They became the form of Chandi themselves. The Navratras were spent in the Pooja of the Shasters with incense, essences of rose and sandalwood. Flowers were showered onto the Shasters with Aarti done everyday. Conches and Nagaras would be played during the Pooja. Samaghri was placed in the Havan Kundhs, raising a lot of smoke. The Brahm Kavach was recited all the time during this time by saying : “Namo, Namo!” Some recited it and some listened to it. They all memorized it. With great joy, there was a celebration on the 10th day of Dushera. A lot of Prashaad was distributed. They all ate with joy. Karah Prashaad was made and distributed.
Guru ji went to the place of Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji and bowed his head. He did Ardaas with his hands folded. A lot of money was given there and Karah Prashaad was distributed. Guru ji then went to his home on top of his horse. Guru ji called for his Parshaadi Haathi. Guru ji did the Pooja of his Haathi and his horse. Doing the Seva of the horses and elephants is the way of the Khalsa. They are powers in war as well and have the Shakti inside of them. Guru ji ate and then rested. After waking up in the evening, Guru ji had his Chatterdhaara and Shaheedi Degh. Guru ji then bathed and tied his Dumaalaa. He tied a high Dumalla with his Kalgi. He wore his jewellery, placed his sword in his Gatra and fastened other weapons to his body. He tied his quiver and held his bow.
Guru ji then went to the Divaan for a little while to sit. After sitting for a while, Guru ji told the Khalsa to ride with him on their horses. They went riding at the sound of the Nagaras and Dhundhabs. The Naqeebs and Bhatts sang the praises of Guru ji. Guru ji made his horse dance. He had the Singhs show him their marksman skills while riding their horses. The Singhs showed their skills with their swords while riding their horses. Guru ji called for all the fruits from the gardens and distributed them to the Khalsa. It was a lot of bliss in Anandpur on Dushera. The Khalsa shouted the Fateh out loud as they saw Guru ji. The Singhs considered themselves fortunate to be with Guru ji.
Big and small canons were taken. Lamchurs and guns were taken. Bows and arrows were taken. The big cannons, the canons placed on camels and the canons on foot; were all fired to mark the celebration. The sound of the firing thundered loud in the mountains and the valley. The sounds were very loud. The rifles were fired towards the skies. There were so much smoke. It looked like clouds and lightening. The mountains were afraid of being reduced to dust today. The rifles were fired. It was hard to hear anything else. Guru ji stood by as the canons, rifles and guns were all fired. It was a full-out military exercise to test all of the weapons. The roads of Anandpur were blessed where Guru Gobind Singh ji had walked. He came back home. The people of Anandpur came out of their homes, stood on their balconies and porches as Guru ji and the Khalsa came back to their homes. The people showered Guru ji with flowers as he came back. Guru ji came back to his home the “Svarn Bangla.” Bhai Aalam Singh ji had gold affixed to the room of Guru ji. The Sikh Sangat met Guru ji with joy. They received Mukti be seeing him. Whatever they received from Guru ji was also protected by Guru ji. The Naubats, Dhundhabs, conches, Napheeryas, Pattas and Dhols sounded. The Rababis played their Mridangs, Rababs and Sitars as they sang their congratulatory songs. They sang the praises of Guru ji. Guru ji showered them with a lot of money. The wise poets read their poems of praises. They all came to read their different Chands and poetry. When Guru ji was happy, he would give them rewards for what they would ask for. They would be in joy to receive a lot of money from Guru ji. Everyone was happy. The celebration of Dushera was enjoyed by all. Everyone ate with joy and slept the night. They all said: “may Satguru ji’s immortal kingdom last forever.” They all asked for this blessing after receiving the rewards from Guru ji.
4-33 Mata ji Gets the Darshan of a Saint
Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji was very strong. He was young and in his prime. The Khalsa was growing like the 2nd day of the new moon. Thousands took Amrit everyday and enlisted in to the army.
One day, Guru ji’s mother, Mata Gujri ji woke up at Amritvela and bathed. She recited Japji Sahib and other Banis. She recited the Sukhmani Sahib after. Guru Gobind Singh ji was walking around his mother casually. Mataji had Guru ji sit next to her with respect. Guru ji sat next to his mother and listened to her reciting Bani. She was reciting with the utmost focus. She was reciting Bani with Vairagya and wished for Mukti. As she was reading, the following “tuk” (line from Gurbani) came:
Just as gold is (for a Brahmgyaani), dirt is the same.. Just as Amrit is (for a Brahmgyaani), poison is the same..
(SGGS 274)
Mataji started to think about the line, as she did whenever she recited Gurbani. She said to her son: “son, you are omniscient. You know of what happens in the whole universe. Just as an Amla (gooseberry) on the hand is evident, you see the whole world. High, low, rich, beggar, saint and thief; you know of everyone. The meaning of the tuk that I just read, as I understand it: one is to stay in the same state in joy and sorrow. This is describing a saint that sees gold and dirt as the same. I wish to meet such a saint some time. I wish to see the person who is the same in opposite states; respect and disrespect; joy and sorrow; always in the One state. Whoever lives like this, the way the elder Guru’s have written, show me this great being.” This was a great wish Mata ji had. Guru Kalgidhar ji said: “Mata ji, such a great being, a Purshotam, you will see tomorrow. Keep Langar ready. The saint will come and eat. Eat after he comes. Wait for him with love though. When Prabhoo ji makes such a person, Prabhoo ji makes the creation a success. Shaishnaag, Sharda, Vedas and Brahma cannot praise the Purshotam, even a little bit. The Brahmgyaani is in one state and higher than Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Their mind is calm. Your wish will be fulfilled Mataji. Without a doubt, you will meet a Brahmgyaani.” After speaking to his mother, Guru ji went outside and met the Khalsa.
Mataji was really happy and thought to herself: “I will meet the saint who is always in one state.” She was Brahm Saroop herself but didn’t feel egotistical about it. She had the great wish. She was the mother of the Master of the Universe.
The first one that met Guru Nanak Dev ji was Baba Bhudda ji. He was wise and a Brahmgyaani of the highest state. He was the peak of Brahmgyaan. He had the Param Padhvi. He stayed with 6 Gurus. He saw the ways of the Gurus in front of him. He had the gift of seeing the Guru in every form, in past, present and future. The Guru was never concealed from Baba Bhudda ji. The Guru always listened to Baba Bhudda ji in every form. Who can be higher than him? In his family, was born Baba Ram Koer ji. He was the flame lighten from another flame. He lived in the state of Brahmgyaani all the time. All of the descendants of Baba Bhudda ji were Brahmgyaanis. There were no others like them. Baba Ram Koer ji was in Amritsar when Guru ji spoke to Mata ji. He was bathing in the Sarovar at the exact time when Guru ji spoke to Mata ji. He sensed that Guru ji was remembering him. He knew what Guru ji wanted; that Mata ji wished to meet a Brahmgyaani. He knew he had to go the next day because Mata ji wanted to see him. Baba Ram Koer ji made preparations to go to Anandpur. The night came as he got ready. He said to his Sangat that was with him: “I will be going to Anandpur in the morning. I have to go quick. You can all come afterwards. Guru ji wants me to come quickly so I will go on ahead. I wish to see Guru ji quickly. Come as quick as you all can.” He slept the night.
Baba Ram Koer ji woke up at Amritvela and bathed at Amritsar. He recited Japji Sahib and affixed the focus of his mind to meeting Guru ji. He mounted his horse and headed towards Anandpur. His horse rode fast. He told his people: “come as quick as you can.” The horse rode towards Anandpur fast. As he rode, it was afternoon. He had travelled about 60 km in that time. It was still far. He had another 125 km to go.
Mata Gujri ji woke up at Amritvela that same day and did her morning routines of bathing and reciting Japji Sahib and other Banis. She started to wait for the saint. She had faith on her son’s words. She didn’t eat or drink that day. She sat with a great wish that day. She wanted to meet the saint first and then eat. She waited for 6 hours and then sent a Sevadaar to her son. She sent a message: “I have been waiting since morning. Why hasn’t the saint come yet? I haven’t eaten yet. It is past noon and my wish hasn’t been completed yet. Will he come to Anandpur today? He who is a full Brahmgyaani, when will I see him? I will do what you say.” Satguru ji was happy and said to the Sevadaar: “your wish is a good one. It is a blessed one. You are great for waiting so long. You wish to meet a saint. You haven’t eaten yet. Mata ji, make delicious food. Make sweet and salty foods. Make the preparations for good food. Plate everything in a big plate. When you do this, you will see the saint right away. It is not too long now. Make preparations with love.” As Guru ji said, the Sevadaar told Mata ji. Mata ji was happy to hear the message. She began to prepare Langar with the other Sevadaars. Many Sevadaars cooked the Langar. She was great at cooking as well and so she directed the Sevadaars. Many types of foods were cooked that had the 6 tastes of food. She plated everything in a big plate with bowls. She waited with faith and devotion.
Baba Ram Koer ji had travelled about 80 km and knew what was happening in Anandpur. He was going as fast as he could but he knew that he would still be a long while to reach Anandpur as he was still less than half way. He would reach at nigh time. He thought to himself: “Mata ji hadn’t eaten. She has food prepared for me. I won’t be able to reach on time without my powers. If I don’t reach on time, there’s no point in reaching so late. I would be giving trouble to Mataji. It is Guru ji’s wish so I need to use Shakti now. It is the Guru’s Shakti. Only the Guru knows his way.” As Baba Ram Koer ji thought about it, he reached Anandpur at the blink of an eye. He had travelled over 100 km in a second. He bowed to Satguru ji’s feet. He bowed to him over and over again with love. Satguru ji said to him: “how are you? Eat Langar. Mata ji has food ready for you.” A Sevadaar was sent with Baba Ram Koer ji towards Mata ji’s home.
Mata ji had the plate ready with a cloth on top. Baba Ram Koer ji bowed to Mata ji’s feet and fulfilled her wish. Mata ji had a beautiful seat ready for him. Mata ji had him sit with respect. The plate was placed in front of Baba Ram Koer ji. Mata ji fanned Baba Ram Koer ji as he ate. She fanned him very lightly. She instructed the Sevadaars to bring food. Mata ji saw that Baba Ram Koer ji was omniscient. She met him with faith and devotion. Mata ji asked Baba Ram Koer ji: “where did you come from today?” Baba Ram Koer ji folded his hands and said: “I stay where the Guru keeps me. Wherever he tells me to go, I go. I am a wooden doll at the merci of the puppeteer. We humans are at the merci of Akaal Purakh. We do as Akaal Purakh, Guru ji, says. We are not free. We are bound to the command of the Guru.” He said this and bowed to Mata ji’s feet. Baba Ram Koer ji went to Guru ji’s court after eating. He saw Guru ji and bowed to him again. He was filled with joy as he saw Guru ji.
4-34 Looting the Karah/ Bhai Ram Koer ji
Baba Bhai Ram Koer ji, the great saint, sat next to Satguru ji. He had the wealth of Sikhi. Baba Bhudda ji, Bhai Bhana ji, Bhai Sarvan ji, Bhai Jhanda ji, Bhai Jalal ji and Bhai Gurditta ji were the elders of Bhai Ram Koer ji. There were known as the viziers of the Guru. Guru ji spoke to Baba Ram Koer ji while blessing him: “Bhai Ram Koer ji, you are the foundation of Sikhi. You have saved Lakhs of Sikhs and put them on the path of Sikhi. Gursikhi is an ocean whose opposite shore cannot be seen. Faith and devotion are the water. Doing the Simran of Satnam day and night, are the waves of this ocean of Sikhi. Cleaning the ego, the ocean of Sikhi becomes clean. Parmeshwar’s plan is appreciated and loved by the one who is without ego. That person sees Parmeshwar’s unlimitedness. That is like observing the depth of the ocean. Guru Nanak Dev ji and the 10th form are the shores of this ocean. They are solid shores with green trees on them. Sam (controlling the mind), Dam (controlling the Indriyas), Daya (compassion), Dharam, Such (purity), Shanti (peace) and keeping the Rehit is what constitutes Gurmat. Forgiveness, purity and being content are the rivers that pour into this ocean. Sikhs and saints are the life forms in this ocean. They are the fish and crocodiles of the ocean. They will never feel the heat of Hell. Whether it be joy or sorrow, they will only stay in the ocean. In this ocean, your family, Bhai Ram Koer ji, illuminates like the moon. Baba Bhudda ji was a great being. The vices couldn’t touch him. He lived in the One and relieved others of their pain.” Bhai Ram Koer ji heard the praises of his father and forefathers. He bowed to Guru ji’s feet. He did not inflate his ego. He became humbler as he heard his family’s praises. He became shy as he heard the praises. He bowed because he was embarrassed. Guru ji had Baba Ram Koer ji stay in a beautiful home. The Sangat of Baba Ram Koer ji arrived after 4 days. They were quire tired as they came to meet Guru ji. They placed money and bowed their heads. They set up their tents and rested the night with peace.
Everyone woke up at Amritvela along with Guru ji. They bathed in the cool waters of the Sutlej. They then recited Japji Sahib and other Banis. They did the Simran of Satnam. After that, they came into Anandpur and sat with Bhai Ram Koer ji. Guru ji arrived in to the Divaan. Other Sikhs came as the Divaan was in progress. Bhai Ram Koer ji bowed to Guru ji along with his Sangat. They all sat near Guru ji. They were happy to see Guru ji. Guru ji looked towards the Mevra and said: “go and tell the Treasurer to bring 1,000 Rajitpuns and make Karah Prashaad from it. Bring the Prashaad quickly.” The Sikhs went and prepared Karah Prashaad and brought it to the Divaan. All of the Khalsa was invited to come and get Karah Prashaad. A lot of people came to have Karah Prashaad. They all bowed and sat down. They were happy to see Guru ji. Baba Ram Koer ji sat down with his Sangat. The court was full of people. Guru ji looked radiant. He was blossoming like a lotus flower. Guru ji’s earrings were radiant. His Kalgi was sparkling along with the Chakars on his Dumaalaa. Whoever looked at him, their sins would be washed away. When the Prashaad came, Guru ji looked towards the Karah Prashaad. Guru ji spoke with words of blessings: “loot the Deghs of Karah Prashaad.” Guru ji got up and went home and sat on his bed. The Khalsa got up and began to loot the Prashaad. It became chaotic as everyone started to take as mush as they could. It was a lot of Karah Prashaad as 1,000 Rajitpuns were a lot. Some took for their family and some took for their friends. There were loud noises and shouting. The shouting could be heard from afar. Bhai Ram Koer ji noticed that Guru ji left and told the Sikhs to loot the Prashaad. Bhai Ram Koer ji closed his eyes and took his attention inwards. He could no longer hear the noise. It was like a turtle pulling itself into its shell. Bhai Ram Koer ji went into Samadhi. He didn’t loot the Prashaad nor did he look that way. He thought to himself: “this is Guru ji’s play. He is doing something.” Bhai Ram Koer ji’s Sangat that came, they wanted to take the Karah Prashaad but didn’t get up because their leader, Bhai Ram Koer ji didn’t get up. They didn’t get up nor did they say anything. They controlled themselves. The Karah Prashaad smelled great but the Sangat of Bhai Ram Koer ji didn’t get up in respect of their leader. The other Sikhs left after an hour.
As the Prashaad finished, Bhai Ram Koer ji opened his eyes. He saw his Sangat. He got up and took his Sangat to his camp. This news spread throughout the Sangat: “Bhai Ram Koer ji did not loot the Karah Prashaad nor did his Sangat, that came with him. They all sat in patience. They didn’t open their hands.” Mata Gujri ji found out about this. She knew that Baba Ram Koer ji saw joy and sorrow, dirt and gold as the same. She thought to herself: “he sees everything as the same. Bhai Ram Koer ji and Baba Bhudda ji are Dhan. Only the fortunate ones reach this state. He is the idol of Parmeshwar. He sees joy and sorrow as the same.” Mata ji was happy to hear this. She praised Bhai Ram Koer ji to her Servants. The day was over and the night came.
The next day, the Divaan was in progress. Guru ji sat on his throne and the Khalsa came to bow to him. Bhai Ram Koer ji came with his Sangat and bowed to Guru ji. They were all happy to see Guru ji. He thought of Guru ji’s feet all the time. Bhai Ram Koer ji was omniscient, he knew what everyone was thinking. Satguru ji looked at the Sangat and said: “why did you not loot the Karah Prashaad? Did you not all wish to have the Prashaad? If you would have taken it, your desire would have been extinguished. Bhai Ram Koer ji lives in One state. He doesn’t care for anything. You all followed him and didn’t listen to the Guru. You were being hypocrites by showing off that you are following your leader. You didn’t care to follow your Guru. It was my command to loot the Prashaad. You wanted to take some but were being hypocrites. Your mind wasn’t stable as you still wanted to take the Prashaad. The Khalsa listened to me. You saw them as looters. These looters are mine. You, are not mine nor Bhai Ram Koer ji’s. Bhai Ram Koer ji, listen: your family and your Sangat will always have hypocrites from now on. You got afraid of Kaliyuga and didn’t loot the Karah Prashaad. Kaliyuga is the Kaal of all. Kaliyuga usually enters through the doors but for you, it will jump walls to get to your family and your Sangat. It will push its way through. You can’t be saved form Kaliyuga now. This is they way it will be in your family and your Sangat from now on. You didn’t listen to the Guru’s command.” Bhai Ram Koer ji folded his hands and said: “Kaliyuga will come into my home with its abilities, this is a big curse. Please forgive me. Destiny will unfold as it well but when I leave my body, may Kaliyuga come after a few years of that. When my grandson is born, may the curse unfold them. I don’t want your curse to open while I am alive.” Guru ji accepted his Sikh’s request and said: “so it shall be.”
When Bhai Ram Koer ji’s grandson was born, Kaliyuga came to their home. His misdeeds were known to all. The whole family was finished. Bhai Ram Koer ji could have had the whole curse reversed but he didn’t. He accepted the command of Guru ji. He accepted the will of the Guru. In this way, the Satguru’s plays are unique. Guru ji continued to do many plays in Anandpur. Many Sikhs came to Anandpur to receive Brahmgyaan and other worldly things.
4-35 Bhai Ram Koer ji
The Katha of Bhai Ram Koer ji will continue. Baba Ram Koer ji did the Katha of all the Guru’s as he witnessed the life of Guru Gobind Singh ji. His elders had witnessed the life and time of the elder Gurus. Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji was omnipotent and omniscient. He would wash the sins away of his Sikhs. He gave them Mukti. Bhai Ram Koer ji stayed with Guru ji. He would only eat after visiting him. When he would close his eyes, he could see Guru ji. He lived under the will of Guru ji. His attention was always focused on Guru ji. He loved the feet of Guru ji. He was drenched in the love of the Guru. Guru ji had cast his illusion. Bhai Ram Koer ji got caught in it as well. Oh listeners, do not be in doubt, though. Many great Avatars, Rishi, Munis and saints have been caught in Maya before. Bhai Ram Koer ji got caught in Guru Gobind Singh ji’s created Maya. There is no one that wouldn’t be caught in Maya when the Satguru creates it. Only Satguru ji can save you from Maya. That person won’t be in doubt. Kakabhushundi and Garud, who live with the Prabhoo, Brahmgyaanis like Vashisht; they have all been caught in the Maya of attachment. Although they get caught in Maya, it does not mean they are any lower. They are still in the Param Padhvi of Brahmgyaan. The Satguru is Akaal Purakh who is not in Maya. Bhai Ram Koer ji was a full Brahmgyaani. Satguru ji casted attachment in his mind. Listen to his Katha. Your sins will be washed away by listening to this.
Bhai Ram Koer ji was from the line of Baba Bhudda ji. Guru Gobind Singh ji, the Tenth Paatshaah, who was radiant like the sun. He was the lion. He loved the weapons. One day, there was a heavy bow in front of Guru ji which caught Baba Ram Koer ji’s attention. Bhai Ram Koer ji thought to himself: “this bow looks stronger than Satguru ji’s strength. Someone who is really strong and an expert at archery may not be able to pull the string on this bow. Strong warriors won’t be able to use this. Guru ji should use bows which he can pull and not something that is beyond his strength. He should use weapons according to his strength and height. People like Arjan, I have heard, were very strong and used these kinds of bows. Satguru ji has such a bow in front of him. I wonder why he has it there. It may be for show.” Guru ji knew what Bhai Ram Koer ji was thinking. He wanted to get rid of Bhai Ram Koer ji’s doubt as a Sikh who doubts his/her Guru, goes to Hell. Guru ji said to his Sevadaars: “get ready to go out. Prepare a hunting party.” Guru ji said to Bhai Ram Koer ji: “come, let’s go hunting.” Guru ji picked up the bow that Bhai Ram Koer ji was looking at. Guru ji came outside of his home and waited for his elephant. As he waited, he said to Bhai Ram Koer ji: “till the elephant doesn’t came, let’s use this bow.” Guru ji took a sharp arrow and mounted it on the bow. Guru ji pulled the string and aimed at a plant in the distance. He aimed at a seed in the plant. Guru ji pulled the bow all the way back to his ear. He released the arrow. The arrow made noises as it ripped through the wind. The arrow went through the seed and right into the ground. Guru ji mounted another arrow. He was removing Bhai Ram Koer ji’s doubts. Guru ji kept releasing arrows as the elephant was getting ready. Everyone watched and praised Guru ji’s strength. Bhai Ram Koer ji was amazed at how strong Guru ji was. Guru ji had thick but lean muscles. Bhai Ram Koer ji figured out that Guru ji was removing his doubts. He thought to himself: “this is the Parmeshwar that created the world. This is the Parmeshwar that sustains and destroys the world. He is the great Shakti. I was trying to measure his strength but he is of unlimited strength. Why did I doubt him? He is the Master. Inder and other Devatas are under his command. He is the Brahm Parmeshwar.” As Bhai Ram Koer ji was thinking, the elephant came, swaying from side to side. The Hoodha was made of gold with strands of gems hanging from it. It had silk ropes. The bells were ringing in the elephant’s neck. The Gujghaah was made of gold. The Kalgi of the elephant was made of gold. It seemed as though Kamadeva dressed it. There was no other elephant so fortunate as this elephant. It was the Parshaadi Haathi, gifted to Guru ji by Raja Rattan Rai. The Haathi bowed to Guru ji. Guru ji grabbed Bhai Ram Koer ji and told him to ride with him. The Mohavat made the elephant sit down for Guru ji to mount. Guru ji lifted his foot to climb up and put his hand on Bhai Ram Koer ji’s shoulder for support. Bhai Ram Koer ji was quite a heavy build. Guru ji put the weight of the three worlds on Bhai Ram Koer ji’s shoulder. It was Lakhs of Maunds that Guru ji placed. It could only be a descendent of Baba Bhudda ji that could tolerate that much weight. If it would have been someone else, they would have been stuck deep into the earth with so much weight. Guru ji did this to get rid of Bhai Ram Koer ji’s doubts as he saw Guru ji was thinner than him. Bhai Ram Koer ji’s feet became unstable for a few moments as Guru ji stacked his weight on him. Guru ji climbed the Hooda and said to Bhai Ram Koer ji: “come and sit with me here in this Hooda.” Bhai Ram Koer ji said: “you are the Master of all the unconscious and conscious existence. It is not right for me to sit at the same level as you. I have made a big mistake. Please forgive me.” Guru ji smiled and noticed that Bhai Ram Koer ji’s doubt was gone. Guru ji said again: “come! Come and sat with me.” After repeatedly telling him to come, Bhai Ram Koer ji came, obeying Guru ji’s command. Bhai Ram Koer ji was the pillar of Sikhi. Occasionally Maya can make the pillar sway. Faith can become unstable with Maya. Guru ji said to Bhai Ram Koer ji: “if pillars as strong as mountains can become unstable, what will become of the weaker pillars?” Bhai Ram Koer ji became humble and lowered his eyes. He did not lift his eyes. He said to Guru ji: “oh Master, your Maya is too strong. We are nothing in front of your Maya. You have casted your Maya on Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. When you were Gopal Avatar (Krishan), Brahma took your calves and your child-friends. You created the calves and the children again. The cows and human mothers did not know that the children were an illusion made of your Maya. Only you can save us from your Maya. Please keep our faith. You put Brahma and other Devatas in doubt. We are nothing in front of them. It was your grace that you forgave me so quickly. You washed away my doubt.” The Katha has been written as it happened.
On another day, the Divaan was in session. Bhai Ram Koer ji was sitting next to Guru ji. The Khalsa was meeting Guru ji and feeling happy. Guru ji was blessing the family of Baba Bhudda ji. He respected them a lot. When Sangat would come and bring gifts for Guru ji, Guru ji would give them the wisdom and tell them to keep their hair and wear a Kachera. He said to all: “take the Pahul of Khanda and keep the Rehit. Tie a Kumerkassa and keep Shasters.” Many Singhs wondered why Guru ji would never ask the descendants of Baba Bhudda ji to become a part of the Khalsa. Baba Ram Koer ji didn’t keep the hair on his head at that time. He would tie a Cheera Pugri with a Kulla sticking out. Guru ji did always mention his Brahmgyaani state though to the Khalsa.
The Singhs saw an opportunity during the evening and said to Guru ji, while folding their hands: “Prabhoo ji, the Pardhaan of the Guru’s home, you praise him all the time. You are always happy with Bhai Ram Koer ji. He knows that he has your blessings. He is the Shiromani Sikh. Why does he not keep his hair? This doubt always remains in the hearts of the Khalsa. You tell everyone to keep their hair except Bhai Ram Koer ji.” The ocean of compassion, Guru ji, heard this and looked towards Bhai Ram Koer ji. Guru ji smiled and said: “it is right to keep your hair. He does have long hair but his hair is inwards. They grow by the day. The others have hair growing outwards. Bhai Ram Koer ji’s hair is of Bhagti, Vairagya, Maitryi and Prem. His hair is growing towards his stomach. There can’t be a Sikh without hair. His hair is inwards. He will keep his hair one day and take the Khanda Pahul.” Bhai Ram Koer ji took Amrit of the Khanda when Guru ji was in Damdama Sahib Sabo ki Talwandi. Guru ji didn’t pressure Bhai Ram Koer ji as he knew that he was still embarrassed from the time that Bhai Ram Koer ji doubted Guru ji’s ability to use the strong bow. Bhai Ram Koer ji kept his eyes lowered from that time. Guru ji would hold Bhai Ram Koer ji by the arm to guide him. Guru ji continued: “Bhai Ram Koer ji, you and I are the same form. There is no difference between us. We are one Jot with 2 bodies. Hari and Hari’s servant are one in the same. The Guru and the Gursikh should be seen as the same. The ones that see them as different, they do not understand the ultimate mystery. Bhai Ram Koer ji, you are the limit of Sikhi. Nobody can compare themselves to you. You are always in the One state bliss. You remain stable in the ultimate state.” In this way Guru ji praised Bhai Ram Koer ji to the Khalsa.
