4-26 Bachittar Singh stabs the Elephant with the Barcha
The two great warriors along with the Khalsa got ready and headed towards the battlefield. The battle was at Logarh, Holgarh and Agamgarh. Everyone was in that area. There was noise on both sides of the battle. “Sat Sri Akaal!” “Har Har Mahadev!” The drunken elephant was being pushed towards the gate of Logarh. The two Singhs were mounted on their horses and headed to Logarh. Bhai Naar Singh ji was guarding Logarh. 500 Singhs were with Bhai Naar Singh ji staying at Logarh. They had guns in their hands which were ready to fire. They fired as soon as the Paharis came ahead. Bhai Bachittar Singh ji and Bhai Uday Singh ji came to the front. Bhai Naar Singh ji said to his regiment: “don’t worry, the Guru is with us. Sri Prabhoo ji will protect us. Say his name and win the battle. Say the name of the Aad Shakti.” The other Jathedaar was Bhai Sher Singh ji. He had his regiment too. He was ready for war as well. His Singhs had their guns pointed towards the Paharis. 500 Singhs were to face the Pahari army of 157,000. They yelled: “kill them!” Guru ji was at a high point and watching. Guru ji fired many bullets to kill the soldiers advancing. Bullets were fired from both sides. The bodies fell hard to the ground. Some were hit in the head and some were hit in the chest. Their heads smashed and their hands, legs and shoulders broke. Some were hit in the eye; some were hit in the teeth. Some bullets blew the turban off of the Pahari army and some bullets were hit in the forehead. The arrows were released and the bullets flew. The warriors were in battle. The horses neighed; the arrows flew. The soldiers went ahead of the others to fight. They were all eager to fight. The soldiers’ clothes were red from their blood. The warriors’ limbs fell to the ground. Some had their intestines ripped out of their body. The horses walked around without their riders. It was like the second Mahabharat. There was a lot of smoke and dust flying. It looked like a storm was coming. The smoke looked like clouds and the fire from the guns firing looked like lightening. Bheem Chand sent many soldiers with spears to guide the elephant. Behind the elephant, the spears were hit to guide it straight. Some were on its left and some were on its right. They wanted the elephant to go straight to the Logarh gate. Kesri Chand instructed the soldiers to take the elephant. The elephant was really big. It looked like a mountain walking. It was covered in metal armour. It was as though a mountain had wings. It trumpeted out loud. It was powerful. It was guided by the spears. When the elephant was hit with the spears, it would trumpet out loud. It was intoxicated with alcohol. Kesri Chand commanded a big army behind the elephant. They planned to enter the fort after breaking the main gate. Thousands of soldiers were coming. Some were on horses and some were on foot. Many soldiers were around the elephant. Kesri Chand had a bow and arrow in his hand. He looked like the groom of a Bharat. He released many sharp arrows towards Logarh. There was a lot of shouting and noise as the army advanced. Bheem Chand watched from a far. He was the main instigator of the war. He wanted to win the war today. Katochia, Handooria and the other Rajas were on their horses, wearing their chainmail and hats.
The lions of Guru Gobind Singh ji, Bhai Uday Singh ji and Bhai Bachittar Singh ji advanced towards Logarh with spears in their hands. Chakars on their Dumaalaas, shields on their backs and swords in their gatras. Many Singh warriors were behind them. They came firing bullets. The Paharis wanted to break Agamgarh first. The Singhs held them off there but they were in low numbers. The Singhs fought hard but they couldn’t hold off the Pahari army of 157,000. The Singhs killed many but had to move back. There were a lot of arrows released there. The Singhs didn’t move back. Many died and achieved the Shaheedi status. They took their swords out and engaged in close combat. When only a few Singhs remained, the Paharis pushed hard. The Agamgarh fort was taken over by the Paharis. They then advanced towards Logarh. There was a Saif tied to the trunk of the elephant. That Saif caused a lot of damage. The Singhs were being forced to go back. They headed towards Logarh. Many bullets were fired. The Paharis had a clear path to Logarh. They advanced with the firing of the bullets. The Kaljognis and 52 Birs were dancing on the battlefield. They ate the flesh of the dead warriors. Vultures and scavengers all came. It’s as if they were invited to a big feist. They burped after eating the flesh. The Sirohis, spears and Khandas were striking and slicing the limbs of the warriors. The drunken elephant advanced towards the fort. The Paharis kept pushing. There were only 20 Singhs that remained. They went to the Logarh fort and fired their guns. Many bullets were fired at once. Thousands went to sleep forever. The Paharis did not back down. When the enemy came close to Logarh, the Singhs fired. The Paharis thought they were going to win. They didn’t mind their soldiers dying in this battle. They took out their swords in anticipation of entering Logarh in a few minutes. They kept firing at the main gate. The Singhs fired through the fort. There were many bodies piled up in front of the Logarh fort gate. The bodies were creating a ladder to heaven for the warriors.
Bhai Bachittar Singh ji realised it was his time to go to battle: “it is my time to kill the elephant now. I will take Guru ji’s power to kill the elephant.” He and Bhai Uday Singh ji looked through an opening of the main gate to analyse the speed at which the elephant was coming with. Bhai Bachittar Singh ji was focused on the elephant. The intoxication of the Shaheedi Degh was at its peak. He saw his opportunity and yelled out: “open the doors and watch my battle with the elephant. Khalsa ji, you take care of the others. Keep firing your guns. I’ll take care of the elephant. My brother Uday Singh will get the share of Kesri Chand. He will kill Kesri Chand. Fight such a fierce battle that the Paharis will remember for generations to come.” After saying this, the gates of the Logarh fort were opened. Bhai Bachittar Singh ji picked up the reins of his horse. He advanced, seeing the drunk elephant. His eyes were red, his eyebrows were arched. His moustaches were curled. He heeled his horse to ride fast. His beard flew in the wind, splitting in two as he rode hard. He was like a lion ready to jump. He stood up from his saddle by standing on the stirrups of his saddle. He stepped on to the reins and balanced himself on the horse. His spear was ready to strike the elephant. The horse rode like a bullet. The horse ducked the Saif. Bhai Bachittar Singh ji stabbed his spear into the head of the elephant. The spear ripped through 7 faulaad shields that were strapped onto the elephant’s forehead. The shields split in two and came falling to the ground. The spear was stabbed in the elephant like Shiva’s son, Kartik stabbed the Kraunch mountain with his spear. It was as though Baashak Naag got scared of Garuda and went inside its home into the mountain and didn’t come out again. It was as though the angry Inder took Shiva’s Trishool and stabbed the mountain. Bhai Bachittar Singh ji took his second hand and spun the spear around like a madhaani churning butter. The spear went into the elephant’s brain. The elephant trumpeted out in pain and dropped its knees to the ground. Its head bowed down in pain as if it was bowing to the courage and strength of Bhai Bachittar Singh ji saying: “it was my mistake that I came here.” Bhai Bachittar Singh ji pulled the spear out. Fountains of blood gushed out of the elephant’s head. The elephant got up and ran backwards, screaming and trumpeting in pain. Bhai Bachittar Singh ji stabbed the elephant in the back to make sure it runs faster, running over its own army. Blood sprouted out. It was blind in anger. It trampled all the soldiers that were guiding it. It killed many of its own soldiers, trampling their heads and chests. Hundreds were killed as it went back. It waived its trunk with the Saif. It chopped off the heads of the Pahari soldiers. Guru Gobind Singh ji was watching with his binoculars. The Singhs shouted Jaikaras when they saw this. The Paharis tried to push the elephant towards Logarh but it kept killing its own people. The Singhs didn’t need to fight anymore as the elephant was trampling its own people. Some were trampled and some were killed by its Saif tied to its trunk. The Paharis tried to handle it but it was out of control. Bhai Bachittar Singh ji chased the elephant for some distance and kept stabbing it in the back. Till today, there is a saying the Paharis use for someone who double-crosses or destroys their own people. They are called the “Jasvaaria da Haathi (the elephant of the Jasvaarias).” The Paharis use this phrase for traitors. That elephant killed thousands of the Pahari army and gave victory to Guru Gobind Singh ji. The elephant looked scary as its trunk was drenched in its own blood.
4-27 Killing Kesri Chand
Raja Jasvaari, Kesri Chand, saw the state of his elephant. The elephant had gone mad and was destroying the army of the Paharis. It killed the soldiers on foot that was behind it. The ones that survived, ran away from the elephant. On the one side was the elephant killing the army, on the other was the Khalsa, firing on the Paharis. The Singhs became lions and attacked the Paharis hard. The Paharis did not stand their ground. Instead of winning Logarh, they had to give their lives. The Guru’s army was less in numbers. The Paharis attacked hard but the Khalsa fought under the influence of the Shaheeds. Guru ji was watching from his place. The Paharis couldn’t figure out what went wrong. The foot soldiers couldn’t stay. The mounted army came into the battlefield. They rode their horses in. Kesri Chand said: “let’s fight the Khalsa and take the fort.” The army was gathered and attacked all at once. The fearless ones attacked ahead. The bullets fired from both sides. Kaali was dancing on the field. The soldiers yelled “kill them!” The mounted soldiers surrounded the elephant. They tried to turn the elephant around. Kesri Chand saw this. Bhai Uday Singh ji saw Kesri Chand on his horse with the golden saddle. He saw an opportunity to go close to Kesri Chand. He signaled the gate keeper to open the door. He saw the Pahari army coming back again and had the Singhs fire on them. The guns were fired form both sides. Bhai Uday Singh ji grabbed his Barcha and heeled his horse to ride fast. The horse lifted it forelegs and charged ahead. It danced like a peacock as it rode. It spoke to the wind as it rode. Bhai Uday Singh ji yelled out “Sat Sri Akaal.” He was like a lion roaring and running towards elephants. The elephant was roaming around the field, bleeding and screaming. It looked scary and trampled the bodies of the dead. The Saif was still tied to its trunk. There was chaos in the Pahari army. The elephant kept doing damage. It wandered like a mad animal. It fought with its trunk. It kept going. It went towards the generals who would run when they saw him. He couldn’t stay in one place. It kept throwing bodies around. Its feet were slipping from the bloody mud. It killed countless soldiers. It was hard to quantify its damage. Thousands were killed by the elephant.
Bhai Uday Singh ji rode hard and ripped through the army. The other Singhs provided cover fire for him. He did Simran of Guru Gobind Singh ji and dodged other soldiers and generals. He reached where Kesri Chand was releasing arrows. Kesri Chand’s eyebrows were arched. He was shooting many Singhs. Bhai Uday Singh ji yelled out: “Kesri Chand! Stay where you are. You killed many of my brothers. I am here to avenge their death. What’s with your pride?” Kesri Chand saw Bhai Uday Singh ji coming towards him. He took an arrow from his quiver and released it towards Bhai Uday Singh ji. The arrow hit the saddle of Bhai Uday Singh ji’s horse. Bhai Uday Singh ji took out his sword. He rode his horse fast and swung his sword onto Kesri Chand’s head. The strike was a clean one. It went right through Kesri Chand’s neck, keeping his golden hoop earrings intact in his ears. Kesri Chand’s head came rolling off, with the golden hoops still in his ears. He killed him with one strike. Bhai Uday Singh ji remembered that Guru ji wanted his head so he picked up Kesri Chand’s head with his Barcha. He shouted Jaikaras and came back towards the fort. The Khalsa let out Jaikaras. When the soldiers saw Kesri Chand’s headless body, they lost their morale. The Pahari Rajas got scared. Kesri Chand was Bheem Chand’s wife’s brother. He was scared to answer to his wife.
The gates of the Logarh opened. The Khalsa attacked. Bhai Mokham Singh ji Payara came out and sliced the elephant’s trunk with his Khanda. The elephant got madder and ran towards the Sutlej and fell near the shore. The Paharis lost their morale and started to back off. Bhai Himmat Singh ji and Bhai Sahib Singh ji attacked with force. Their eyes were blood red. They were fighting like fearless lions. Bhai Naar Singh ji and Bhai Sher Singh ji flashed their swords. They fired onto the Paharis. They were from Majha. The Paharis fired but Satguru ji protected the Khalsa. The Khalsa went right into the enemy lines and picked up their fallen brothers. The Khalsa was winning the battle. The Paharis moved back. It was a fierce battle. Rivers of blood were flowing. The 64 Kaljognis and 52 Birs were eating the flesh. The ghosts and prayts came as well. Crows and vultures came to feast on the flesh of the soldiers.
Kalgidhar ji was watching the battle from his high point. He was happy to see what happened. He saw the elephant and Kesri Chand die. This is what the Singhs wanted to happen. Guru ji fulfilled their wishes. Kalika laughed out loud in the battle this day. She was black. Many bullets were fired. The soldiers’ faces were red. The soldiers’ clothes were drenched in blood. It looked like flowers blooming in the garden. Some were hit with bullets and wandering like drunks. Some had their feet broken and some were hit in the chest. The soldiers fell to the ground. Some got hit in the ear and some were stabbed in the gut. Some lost their eyes and some broke their neck. Some bled to death and some were laying on the floor looking for water. Their clothes and limbs were ripped off. The Nagaras were ripped. The Narsinghas broke with the bullets. The horses died. Some horses lost their riders. There were weapons on the ground. The cowards saw this scene and got sick. The Pahari soldiers did not want to fight anymore. It was like the Singhs were playing Holi and singing the songs of Holi. The guns were like the pichkaris. The fat that came from the body was like the Ambeer. The soldiers played Holi and went to sleep on the ground. They went to sleep with red blankets. Some were on the floor on their faces and some were on their backs with their eyes open. The dogs came to eat the flesh. The Apsaras from heaven came to marry the dead soldier’s souls. They came to get the warriors’ souls. Their eyes were beautiful. They came decked out in jewellery. They laughed as they talked to each other. Their hands had Mehdi on them. They fought each other to marry the best warrior. Their feet were red. They were beautiful. Their faces were like the moon. Their skin was fair, with gold on top. They were taking the soldiers to the solid gold homes in heaven. They placed their new husbands into the vessels and took them to heaven.
The fool Bheem Chand looked towards the battlefield and lost his senses. Patience, wisdom, knowledge and strength, he lost it all. When he saw his army destroyed. Handooria told Bheem Chand: “don’t worry I will go.” Handooria released many arrows towards the Khalsa. Bhai Sahib Singh ji Payara noticed Handooria on his golden saddle. Bhai Sahib Singh ji rode towards him and fired his gun at him. Handooria was hit in the chest and became injured. Gularia didn’t even bother going. Katochia was injured. The Raja of Mandi was watching all this. The Raja of Jammu was amazed to see how they were losing. The Paharis took a great loss. They were wondering how they lost so many men. Thousands were injured and went back to their camps. They had come to win the Logarh fort but lost a Raja and so many men. Big Rajas and Chaudharys were killed on the field. As the sun set, the soldiers went far back to rest in their camps. The Rajas noticed that they lost 75% of their men. Many officers, ministers and relatives were killed. The Pahari Rajas were drowning in mourning. They thought of their relatives and friends. They cried mourning the dead.
4-28 Bheem Chand in Mourning
The Singhs that became Shaheeds on the battlefield, their brothers picked up their bodies and cremated them where Shaheedi Bhaag is today. The injured Singhs were treated by the Doctors known as “Jarrahs.” Bhai Uday Singh ji, the brave warrior, had Kesri Chand’s head on top of his spear. He was happy and coming back towards Guru ji. Guru ji came down from the Damdama as the battle was done for the day. He came into his home and sat on his bed. Bhai Uday Singh ji reached there and greeted Guru ji with the Fateh. Bhai Uday Singh ji placed Kesri Chand’s head near Guru ji’s bed. It still had its Pagri with a Kalgi on it. His ears still had golden hoops on them. His moustaches were curled and his eyes were closed. Guru ji’s legs were still hanging off his bed. Guru ji hadn’t taken his shoes off yet. Guru ji kicked Kesri Chand’s head and said: “this was a sinner. He was an enemy and hater of the Singhs. It’s good you killed him Uday Singh. He was the root cause of all the conflicts.” Bhai Uday Singh ji spoke with enthusiasm: “it was your radiance and power.” Bhai Bachittar Singh ji also came and bowed to Guru ji. He said the Fateh to Guru ji and the other Singhs. Bhai Sahib Singh ji, Bhai Himmat Singh ji and Bhai Mokham Singh ji came as well. They were all happy to see Guru ji. They all told Guru ji how the elephant was killed: “in this way the enemy was disturbed and killed. The elephant killed many Pahari soldiers. The Paharis had double the problem. Prabhoo ji, look how many bodies of Paharis are spread. It looks like many Tarkhans have cut a jungle down. The Paharis got scared and ran away from the battlefield. The ones that stayed were killed. The Paharis lost their will to fight.” The Singhs all eagerly told the events of the battle to Guru ji. Guru ji was listening to the Singhs and spreading his divine and blessed vision on all. The Singhs that were injured, the Sail Patter was applied to their wounds by Guru ji. He took everyone’s pain away. The ones that were injured in all the forts, Guru ji sent the paste to all of them. It would make everyone good by morning as it was touched by Guru ji. The ones who became Shaheeds, all of their desires were fulfilled. The desireless Shaheeds were given Mukti and had all their bonds broken. The Shaheeds with desires went to Heaven to reap their rewards. They were given a lot of joy.
Over at the camp of the Paharis, the soldiers entered their camp. Bheem Chand was mourning the death of Kesri Chand. Bheem Chand, the egotistical, was depressed in his tent. He achieved nothing from this war and lost a lot of soldiers including his brother-in-law. The 22 Pahari Rajas brought their citizens. They had lost more than 150,000. Jamtulla Bhao was killed a few days ago and Kesri Chand lost his life today. There was no other warrior like him in the Pahari army. Handooria came to Bheem Chand, who was injured from a bullet wound. Bheem Chand said to Handooria: “there’s no hope to defeat Guru Gobind Singh ji.” Katochia then came wearing his sword and shield. He saw the two Rajas sitting in depression. The Rajas of Jammu, Mandi and Guler came in the tent as well. The rest of the remaining Rajas came. Kaital, Kuloo and Bhutant said: “Jasvaaria died today fighting bravely. He was behind the elephant and some Singh came. Kesri Chand shot an arrow at him but it hit the Singh’s saddle. He didn’t get time to shot a second arrow. The Singh saw his opportunity and beheaded Kesri Chand with his sword. The other warriors were watching and the Singh took Kesri Chand’s head on a spear. Kesri Chand’s body fell to the ground and it looked like he was sleeping.” Bheem Chand’s eyes began to water as he heard the series of events leading to Kesri Chand’s death. The other Rajas began to cry as well. They all lowered their heads and thought about their situation. They were all embarrassed. They lost a family member and they lost the battle. Raja Katochia looked at everyone and spoke with ego: “this is the way war is. Some win and some lose. Don’t cry. Become men. If you want to mourn the warriors then why do you fight wars? Why did you start a war with a person known to be a super-warrior? Don’t worry, I will show you in the morning. I won’t leave one Singh alive if they don’t run away tonight. There are only two tasks in war: kill, or be killed. The one who has enthusiasm only wins. The cowards lose. Don’t cry. It is not right. Our enemy is still alive. He will attack at night. His Singhs are strong. The ones who are alive, give them hope and enthusiasm.” Bheem Chand stopped crying and said: “our glory is gone. Kesri Chand was a special person to us but we can’t stop now either. We are on the ship in the ocean of war. You will need to command the ship. Otherwise we will drown. Help us. Many kings and officers were killed today. The elephant died today as well. I don’t trust anyone else but you now. Nobody can fight the Guru other than you. The news will spread in our lands and we will be spoken ill about. We collected such a great army and couldn’t do anything. We lost so many great leaders. We couldn’t take over Anandpur. Our effort was in vain. How can we show our face to our people? We spent a lot of money in this war. We lost a lot of relatives. The news will spread in Hindustan that we lost to a Guru, a saint fakir. It is better to fight and die now.” The Raja of Mandi thought to himself: “these fools still don’t understand. If I speak now, they will get angry as they are wounded. I will need to watch their drama quietly. The grandfather of the Guru, Guru Hargobind Sahib ji fought 4 wars with the Emperor. These Rajas won’t be able to defeat the Guru. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji made Sikhs in the 9 Khands. They all sing his praises. Guru Gobind Singh ji, the strong, sits on that throne. The Guru loves the battlefield. He loves war. He is a dangerous warrior. He has killed many sinners. Bheem Chand has never faced the Guru in war that’s why he doesn’t know.” The Raja of Mandi didn’t say anything and sat with his brethren. Ghamand Chand Katochia was still proud. It was night time so everyone got up and went to their tents. The injured were all over the place in pain. Many soldiers lost their relatives. They cried for them and their wounds. The news spread back home. The women of the Paharis cried with their hair open. They hit their chest with their fists.
The news of Kesri Chand’s death reached Jasvaar. The women of his house began to cry out loud. There was yelling in grief. There were enough tears to wash their clothes. The 22 mountains were crying. Everyone was swearing at Bheem Chand for causing so much damage and fighting the Guru.
The Paharis decided to send Ghamand Chand to lead the battle. They all ate and went to sleep. They couldn’t sleep thought. The news reached Guru ji that Ghamand Chand was going to attack. Guru ji said: “set up Morchas near Logarh. They will come again tomorrow morning.” Bhai Aalam Singh ji set up the Morchas and set up the strategies. The Morchas were set up far. The injured Singhs were being treated. They fell asleep in peace as they were doing Simran of Satnam. The Name kept everyone in peace. Everyone went to sleep after eating. Some of the Sikhs were proud of their efforts. Guru ji did not tolerate the little bit of ego that came into the Singh’s mind. In the morning, the conches and Nagaras sounded. Everyone woke up.
4-29 The Next Day’s Battle
The Khalsa was eager to fight and so they got ready in the morning. They bathed and prepared for war. Guru ji sent Bhai Uday Singh ji and others after the Nagara was sounded. The mountains trembled as the Nagaras sounded. The Morchas were set up. The Khalsa was ready to fight on foot and horses. The Paharis got ready for war as well. Katochia Raja Ghamand Chand was ready to come. He had a thick Tegha in his waste and an expensive shield made of rhinoceros’s skin. He had a quiver full of arrows. He had a heavy bow. He was a warrior ready for war. He met Bheem Chand to give him hope: “don’t worry. Watch me fight. Stay on my back and I will go forward. Make sure the army doesn’t leave my back. Stop them from running away.” Ghamand Chand released an arrow towards the sky after speaking. Many warriors went with him. He said to his generals: “warriors, we are to do the great task of destroying the forts today. We will capture the Guru today. We have been insulted yesterday. We need to wash that stain today. I will not back down. You shouldn’t back out either. I will give a lot of money to the ones who fight today. The one who dies will go to heaven and they will be praised in the world.” The Paharis prepared their guns with gunpowder and bullets. They rammed their bullets and gunpowder with their ramrods and placed their rifles on their shoulders. They headed towards the forts of Anandpur. Many foot soldiers and cavalry were headed towards the forts. They were carrying the insult from the day before. They were angry.
The Khalsa was set up in the Morchas. They loaded the bullets into their rifles. As the “tora” was prepared, the “gul” bundled up which they twisted and stacked with “kulaa.” They pointed towards the Pahari army. Thousands of bullets were fired. They pierced the chests of the Paharis. Everyone fired their rifles; expert or novice. They all aimed with the faith of Guru ji and succeeded. The battle became fierce. It looked like a storm with black clouds approaching. When the bullets fired, it looked like lightening flashes. The rain of bullets looked like hail. There was a fierce battle. Anandpur was filled with smoke and bullets firing. The warriors ran around on the field. The guns fired. The guns were like the mouths of volcanoes. The warriors would quickly prepare the next round of fire. The legs and arms would break as the bullets would pass through them. The warriors would fall by swinging as they were hit. Where the Khalsa was set up in the Morcha, there was a lot of metal clanking there. The warriors danced as the dhols were played. Shehnais were playing with conches.
Ghamand Chand saw his soldiers running away. He yelled at them: “why are you running? There are only a few Singhs left. We killed many yesterday. We will kill them all today. Only one charge is what we need. We will capture the Guru. I will promote your rank and double your salary.” Ghamand Chand headed forward with a heavy bow. He released Khapra arrows towards the Khalsa. He was a brave and proud warrior. He killed many Singhs. He was an expert archer. Bhai Aalam Singh ji noticed that Ghamand Chand killed many Singhs. Bhai Aalam Singh ji said: “Ghamand Chand is coming with a lot of force. He has taken our Morcha and pushed the Singhs back. Many have died and many are injured. Some have gone back.” Bhai Aalam Singh ji couldn’t tolerate it. He took his gun and rode ahead on his horse. His horse danced as it charged. Bhai Aalam Singh ji was known as “Nachna,” the dancer. He danced with his horse piercing through the army. He yelled at Ghamand Chand: “you fool! You killed many of my brothers. Stay where you are. I am here to avenge them.” Bhai Aalam Singh ji made his horse dance like a peacock and aimed at Ghamand Chand’s chest with his gun. He shot a bullet which swished through the arrow. Ghamand Chand dodged the bullet by swaying around but the bullet shot his horse in the neck. Bhai Aalam Singh’s bullet killed Ghamand Chand’s horse. Ghamand Chand quickly jumped off his horse and prepared his bow. Bheem Chand saw this whole battle. He yelled to his soldiers: “go and help Ghamand Chand. Make sure he doesn’t get caught. He is fighting with the Singhs. Go and help him.” Bheem Chand commanded his soldiers by swearing at them. He kept yelling. Some soldiers advanced.
The Khalsa saw Bhai Aalam Singh ji and charged ahead. Both sides were pushing on ahead. The Khalsa was getting tired but caught a second wind as Ghamand Chand’s horse was killed. Ghamand Chand took off his quiver and kneeled on one of his knees. He began shooting his arrows from where he was. He said to his soldiers: “I am staying here. Where are you going?” The soldiers saw him and turned around. Ghularia and the other Rajas were inspired by Ghamand Chand and attacked ahead. They killed through the Singhs, firing many bullets. Many soldiers fell injured off their horses. The Paharis charged ahead and began pushing the Singhs. The Singhs had to move back to Logarh again. Ghamand Chand pushed the Singhs back and attacked Logarh. He released many arrows along with the other soldiers. Bheem Chand and other Rajas attacked Logarh. They attacked with Sailays, Tomars, arrows and guns. Many Singhs were injured. The Singhs wanted to come out from Logarh but they couldn’t. It was like constant hail. There were dead bodies everywhere. Dogs and vultures were eating the flesh. The scavengers, ghosts and prayts were eating the flesh of the soldiers. It was a fierce battle. Katochia Ghamand Chand was proud and attacked ahead. He saw his victory a few minutes ahead. The ghosts and the prayts were dancing. The Kaljognis were dancing. The cowards were scared to see this sight. Crows and vultures were shrieking. They got a lot to eat.
The Farlas of the Nishans were ripped. Only the bamboos remained. The warriors were satiated from fighting. They used their whole strength. Thousands died. Thousands were injured. Weapons were scattered on the ground: guns, spears, swords and shields. Many khanjars, bows and arrows were on the ground. There were dead horses. Some horses had no riders. Some soldiers left their horses and ran away. The battle lasted the whole day. It was evening. Ghamand Chand was on his knee. As he was getting up, he was hit with a bullet. He didn’t die but was unable to fight anymore. His soldiers had to pick him up and take him back to the tent. The foolish Bheem Chand came back to his tent as well and became worried as he saw Ghamand Chand being injured. He felt regret again. The soldiers were tired. They fell as soon as they came back. The injured made it back too. Their clothes were dirty with blood and dirt. Their clothes and armour were ripped. It was a fierce battle. The soldiers were in pain.
The Singhs came back and Guru Gobind Singh ji had the injured taken care of. The Singhs that died went to heaven. Their bodies were cremated at Shaheedi Bagh. The Nagara was sounding at Logarh. The Singhs shouted out the Fateh. The Singhs saw sorrow and joy as the same. They only saw the Guru. They recited Bani. They all came to Guru ji’s home and met him. The rest of the Khalsa was in Logarh. The head Singhs came to tell Guru ji about the battle. Bhai Aalam Singh ji and Bhai Uday Singh ji said: “Katochia fought hard today. The Khalsa fought hard as well. There was metal clanking from both sides. Ghamand Chand killed many Singhs today. By your grace, he was hit with a bullet and got injured. He backed down with his army then. There are many Singhs injured today. Prabhoo ji, please send them the Saal Patter. Please take their pain away. Save them. Protect them.” Guru ji gave hope to the Singhs and had them sit near him. The bandages and Saal Patter were sent along with food for them to eat.
4-30 The Khalsa’s Victory
All of the Pahari Rajas had a meeting that night. Bheem Chand entered the area where the other Rajas were. Pamma Vizier and other wise men were present. It was a big gathering. Torches were lit. Bheem Chand was an egotistical fool. He angrily spoke to all: “we have tried to use many tactics but have not yet been successful. We have been fighting a few days over a month now and lost many soldiers. We all need to find the best political strategy. The brave: Kesri Chand and Bhao Jamtulla have died. We have lost many Rajas and generals. I can’t even count our losses; they are so much. We tried to punish the Guru but that didn’t work. We should have used the other tactics of politics first. We should have used Sham (persuasion), Dhaam (bribery/purchase), and Bhed (causing divisions). Instead, we started with the Dhand, the punishment. He didn’t try to sweet-talk or cause divisions with the Guru and his people. We need to think of victory now. The Pahari Rajas are in sorrow. They were in mourning. We should forget the fight now. Let’s see what we can do. Let’s try to sweet-talk the Guru. We started a fight because of anger. We tried to surround Anandpur but we didn’t succeed. Guru Gobind Singh ji has no worries. His army is still growing. They are not concerned about anything. The Guru doesn’t wish to have a bigger army. His army grows without him sending a call out to his people. He has no shortage of money. Sikhs from every direction come to give him money and gifts. This fight is not small. The Guru does not fear us. He won’t give in to us. His enthusiasm grows by the day. I want to take Anandpur from him. We should look towards the Emperor. We should use the Emperor’s army. The big army should come and do our task. They have big canons. We will attack with the Emperor’s army by surrounding Anandpur. We won’t lose once the army form Delhi comes. We will kill many Singhs. We won’t let the food enter Anandpur. We will keep a strict boundary. After many months, their food will run out. They won’t be able to fight then. They will have to leave Anandpur. Without the Emperor’s army we can’t do anything. I’ve figured this out. It’s better to stop fighting. Many have died and many are injured. The army is tired; as we have been fighting for a long time now. Handooria and Ghamand Chand are injured. They were great warriors but are injured now. There is nobody left to lead the army now. We can’t do anything but to leave.” Galleria and the Raja of Mandi thought hard and gave good advice: “you have had many people killed and lost a lot of money. What was the use of this? This was a useless effort. Nobody advised you well. Kesri Chand died with his ego. It is better to leave now. This is the best thing to do. It’s good for everyone. We need to figure out something without fighting. We need to relieve Anandpur without fighting.” The sinner Pamma said: “don’t worry. I will tell you something later on. Guru ji will leave Anandpur. Let’s all leave and go home. Let’s go home and rest. Let’s leave in the morning. Let’s pack up.” Ghamand Chand agreed to this as well. He got on top of his palanquin and prepared to leave.
The injured left that very night. Handooria left that night too, packing up the horses and tents. They all wanted to leave right away as there was no telling when the Singhs would attack. Everyone was quiet and left without any commotion. Ghamand Chand didn’t want to speak to Bheem Chand. The Paharis were upset as they left in the night. It was a treacherous terrain on the way home. Most of the people were injured. The people guiding the army were walking on foot. Bheem Chand told the non-injured people to stay the night. He told them: “we will leave in the morning.” They ate at night and went to sleep. Some went to sleep and some stood on guard.
The Singhs in Logarh; some were sleeping and some were on guard. They would fire warning shots every few minutes. They kept a watch to see where the Paharis were. When it was about an hour till daylight, the Paharis saddled their horses. The elephant of Bheem Chand was prepared. They quietly got ready to leave. The tents were disassembled. The luggage was loaded on the carts and horses. Bheem Chand watched as the packing was happening. The guns, swords, and spears were packed. Bheem Chand kept watch till the sun came up. The Paharis got ready to leave. The Nagara sounded and Bheem Chand mounted his elephant. When the Nagara of the Paharis sounded, the Singhs of Logarh found out that Bheem Chand was leaving, with great dishonor. The Singhs became extremely angry and saddled their horses. Bhai Uday Singh ji, Bhai Sahib Singh ji and Bhai Himmat Singh ji got angry and mounted their horses. Bhai Mokham Singh ji made his horse ride. Bhai Aalam Singh ji headed towards the Paharis. They all charged and attacked the camp of Bheem Chand. They fired their guns. Thousands of Singhs came as they all found that the Singhs of Logarh were attacking the Paharis leaving the conflict. They came attacking on their horses. It looked as though a whole pride of lions attacked a herd of elephants. The Singhs attacked them hard. The Singhs didn’t want the Paharis to leave. Bheem Chand was surrounded. He got worried. Guns were fired. Spears were thrown. The Singhs tackled the Paharis and took their horses. They looted their weapons and killed many of the Paharis. Some grabbed two horses and some took more. Some Paharis folded their hands. The Singhs let them go. The others were killed. Their clothes were red with blood.
Kalgidhar Paatshaah ji heard the news: “the Paharis were running away but the Singhs attacked them.” Satguru ji sent the Singhs a message by sending senior Singhs: “don’t attack the ones that are leaving. Don’t attack anyone from the back.” Guru ji sent the senior Sikhs to stop the Singhs from attacking the Paharis that were running away. The senior Singhs came and said: “Don’t take their right to run away from them. Stop right now.” The Singhs that were attacking stopped as they heard the command came from Satguru ji. They said: “we are stopping now. Otherwise we were going to go to Bheem Chand’s home and loot everything he had.” The messenger Singhs said: “It is not right to go now. The one that is running away, we shouldn’t attack them.” The Singhs roared the Fateh. They had looted many horses and weapons. They made the soldiers run away. When the Khalsa came back, the Nagaras were sounded. The Singhs were victorious. The news spread that Guru ji won and Bheem Chand lost. The news spread among the land, very far.
The homes in the Paharis all had crying and mourning. Many soldiers did not return home. Bheem Chand heard the news of who died and regretted it. He was worried and upset. He reached his capital with a hurt ego. He lost all is pride. People who lost members of their families were swearing and cursing at Bheem Chand.
The Khalsa came back to Guru ji. The Singhs greeted Guru ji with joy. They had all their weapons with them. Guru ji casted his blessed vision on everyone. The Singhs bowed to Guru ji’s feet. The Khalsa sat down after bowing. Prabhoo ji said: “when you see the enemy running away after losing, don’t attack them from the back. This is the tradition of valiant and good people. If the enemy comes from the front with weapons, then don’t show them your back. Love the fight of Dharma and take on the traditions of noble and wise people. Follow the path of Sikhi with contentment. Do the Simran of Satnam and make your life a success. My Khalsa will rule one day. It will be the strongest in the world. Sri Asket ji, Sri Kalika Mai ji will be with you.” Guru ji had discussions with the Singhs in this way. The Singhs killed the enemy and achieved victory. Saal Patter was sent to the injured. Kavi Santokh Singh ji says: “the ones who read or listen about this battle of the Khalsa, they will receive a lot of joy. They will receive the contentment of Guru ji. Their bad wisdom, which makes one take births, will be washed away. Satguru ji Guru Gobind Singh ji is the highest. The Singhs would praise Guru ji.” Kavi Santokh Singh ji makes a request: “the sins are like the deer; the praise of the Guru is like the lion that kills the sins. A Singh should listen to this Katha.”
