4-1 Manglacharan/ The Khalsa goes out
Ik Oankaar Satgur Prasaad
Sri Vahiguru ji ki Fateh
Akaal Purakh is gracious on the weak and is the giver of bliss. Akaal Purakh resides in all. The one who connects to the Name, they receive the Kaival Mukti (becoming One with Akaal Purakh). Guru Nanak Dev ji purified the bad wisdom and gave the people the Name. Guru Angad Dev ji, Guru Amardas ji, Guru Ramdas ji were gracious. Guru Arjan Dev ji is praised in every home. Guru Hargobind ji and Guru Har Rai ji came with Guru Harkrishan Sahib ji and took away the pain of the people. I think of Guru Gobind Singh ji and bow to the 10 Gurus.
The power of Parmeshwar, Sharda, she is white. The form is beautiful like the moon. White Kapoor is on her body. The Shakti is pure like the Ganga. Sarasvati is the power of Akaal Purakh that makes everyone speak. Sarasvati is manifested in the 14 worlds. Billions could not find her end. Poets compose new poetry everyday. Bani is written. I bow to the Bani. Listen to the Kath of Sri Kalgidhar ji. If you listen to it with love, the corrupt wisdom and vices will be washed away. Guru Sahib’s ways are unique. Nobody has the power to state his praises. Guru ji blessed me to say his praises. I can do only as much as Guru ji allows me to. I do not have the power to write the Katha. Guru ji is making me write this himself. The Khalsa Panth grew into a might force. I will now write about their fierce battles they fought. I will write this now. Kalgidhar ji will make me write it.
Guru ji would hold court everyday and say: “destroy the sinners. Practice Shaster Vidya. Keep your wisdom high and your mind low, be humble. Don’t let go of your Shasters. Keep weapons with you day and night.” The Khalsa would say Fateh in a roaring voice: Vahiguru ji ka Khalsa, Vahiguru ji ki Fateh.” A lot of Sangat would come to Anandpur everyday. They would live in Anandpur and be happy. New young men would come and enlist in the army of Guru Gobind Singh ji. Guru ji would give them strong horses. People would give horses to Guru ji by selling their gold. The mothers sold their gold to buy a horse. The Saudagars would go to other lands to bring back horses of strong breeds. Guru ji would buy them all. In Guru ji’s stable, there were proud and strong steeds. There were thousands of horses. (Baba Sri Chand ji was given a horse by Guru Arjan Dev ji and he said “there will be thousands of horses.”). There were many elephants in Anandpur that swayed side to side. They had expensive Hoadas on top of them. People came from many lands. The camps were always set up of different Sangats from different lands. Satguru ji’s doors were always crowded. There was always joy there. The ambassadors of different kings would live in Anandpur. They were surprised at the wealth that Guru ji had in comparison to their own kings. There was a crowd in the market all the time. People from foreign lands came wearing expensive clothes. Sikhs kept coming to Anandpur. There were so many horses and Sangat around the area. The grass began to finish around the area of Anandpur for miles. The horses needed grass and so the Singhs would go looking for grass. The horses and elephants began to starve. It was not enough feed.
One day the Khalsa got together and told Guru ji of the problem with the grass: “listen Satguru Maharaja ji, there is no feed for the horses and the elephants. They are starving. There is no grass for miles around. The Paharis do not sell their grains or feed. The elephants and horses are getting weaker. With your command, we can go to other lands. The horses have eaten all the grass in the area. There are new horses coming everyday. For this reason, we come to you with a plea. We can’t do anything without your permission. Kiratpur and Anandpur, the villages from around there, the Sangat comes from near and far. They bring horses for travelling as well. The army is big too. They go to hunt and can’t find any animals to hunt. The Paharis don’t let us hunt in their area.” The treasure of virtue, Kalgidhar ji, heard the Khalsa. To lighten the weight of the earth from the sinners; give bravery to the Khalsa and teach them war; to give them the kingdom and increase their glory; to win the Degh and Tegh; whoever came to Guru ji, he/she was kept. Guru ji’s voice was deep and roaring. He said to the Khalsa: “just as one’s children grow and get married, they have many other kids and the family gets really big; the Khalsa is my family. It is growing and spreading like water. They will spread all around the world. This area of this Dhoon, the valley, instead of this, the Khalsa will be in the whole world. Let’s go from this valley and conquer other Dhoons. Get ready and stay in attention. Wherever you see green grass, go and take it. Whoever meets with aggression, loot everything they have. Whoever meets with love, take only one bundle of grass. Take your elephants and horses. Great wars are upon us now. Whoever gives you feed or are poor, don’t take much from them. Only take what they give. Protect the poor or the one that give you their Dasvand. The ones that show aggression, loot them. The ones that are proud of their kings, loot them too. Mark their fields and take their grass. Don’t let the horses starve. You will need to know how to take things. The Pahari Rajas have a lot of land. These Rajas take 90% of the crops of the poor citizens.” The Khalsa heard the command and got ready. They went to show the Hindus and Muslims who they were. The ones that were jealous of the Khalsa’s glory, they tried to bother the Sikhs in their villages. They wanted to take the kingdom of the earth. They wanted to break the pride of the Rajas. This was the wish of the Guru. They all donned their weapons. Guru ji gave his permissions and went to his home. He ate and then rested the night.
In the morning, the Nagara sounded. Everyone bathed and got ready. They took their weapons and mounted their horses. They had courage. They went towards Bheem Chand’s fields. The people of the village heard the Nagaras and came with their hands folded. They gave grass and feed to the Khalsa. Some brought milk, ghee or yoghurt. They wanted the Khalsa to protect them, and so they did. They were saved in this world and in the court of Akaal Purakh. The foolish ones tried to stop them. They straightened their guns towards the Khalsa and skirmishes broke out. The Nagaras sounded and the bullets were fired. Their fields were destroyed to nothing. The aggressors ran away and hid. The Khalsa looted them and brought their stuff back to Anandpur. The ones who fought with the Khalsa, they saw their fields and ran away. They were afraid of the Khalsa. The Khalsa looted their fields and made them scared. The Khalsa won every battle. The Khalsa would come back with a lot of grass and feed. The horses and elephants got enough to eat. The Khalsa would come back to Guru ji and bowed to him. They would say the Fateh to Guru ji and sit in the court. The court would be in session and the Khalsa would tell Guru ji where they went and what happened. The Khalsa made the whole area unstable. They would tell Guru ji which villages they looted or which villages they saved.
The next day, the Khalsa went in the same way. They would go to new villages everyday. They would loot and fight before coming back. The Pahari area was in tension. Fights would break out. Many soldiers would die or be injured. Some fields were destroyed and some were saved. The wise ones would bring their Dasvands. They knew that the Pahari Rajas were thieves and that Guru ji’s law was better. The villages in the area of Anandpur Sahib were all under the law of the Khalsa. The ones that wanted to stay with the kings, they would be beaten by the Khalsa.
4-2 Shankar Varan
The people of the Pahari area were getting annoyed and went to the king to complain: “the Khalsa loots the villages and beat us. They have destroyed our villages. Protect the public that you take taxes from. If you don’t protect the people, the Dhoon will be in ruins.” Bheem Chand and the other kings heard the public. They sent police in all the villages and gave them Dhols and Nagaras. They wanted the villagers to play them when the Khalsa would come. The villagers were worried and connected with each other to help each other out. The kings called a meeting. Jasovaliay, Chandaria, Katochia and Bheem Chand all met. They said to each other: “the Khalsa is reeking havoc on our villages. We will need to fight them. We will need to fight the Guru. If Guru Gobind Singh ji comes to hunt in our area, we will need to fight him. The hunt is just an excuse. We will need to band together and fight. We need to save our kingdoms. We don’t want the Guru to take our kingdoms away. Let’s attack hard and arrest the Guru. We should meet them with force so they don’t come back to our area. If the Guru comes himself, we should shoot a bullet and kill him. It is the Guru that inspires and motivates them. He should die. Who cares if he is the Guru. He should not bother us. He shouldn’t hunt or fight with others. He is trying to be a king. We allowed him to live here. We didn’t give him our kingdoms. The Guru will take our kingdom. They have ruined the fields in our areas. They destroyed the Bajroor village and killed the people. They also ruined Noh.” In this way, the Pahari Rajas decided to send policemen to the villages. They were told to play the dhols and Nagaras when the Singhs would come. The other policemen of other villages would hear them and come to help.
There was unrest in the area. The Khalsa did not stop though. They continued with looting and taking the stuff from the fields. The villagers and police would come and fight them. Bullets would be fired everyday. The killing continued and there was a fight everyday. It would happen in different villages. The Khalsa was learning and figuring out the different strategies of war. There was war everyday.
One day, Guru ji was sitting in Anandpur. There was a Divaan in progress. Guru ji sat in the middle on his throne. There was a discussion that started about war. The Paharis was upset at how the Khalsa would come into their area. The Singhs would tell Guru ji: “they come but then they run away when we fight back. They run like cowards. When we come, they come with guns firing.” Guru ji heard this and blessed them: “the glory of the Khalsa will grow. In time, they will spread all over the world. The Hindu and Turk will not be able to stand in front of the Khalsa. The kingdom and wealth of the Khalsa will grow. People will know when this word of mine takes full fruition. “Akaal” will resound from every bush and building.” Bhai Daya Singh ji, Bhai Uday Singh ji, Bhai Allam Singh ji, Bhai Mokham Singh ji, Bhai Sahib Singh ji – the warrior, Bhai Himmat Singh ji, Bhai Ram Singh ji – the wise, and the rest of the Khalsa heard Guru ji’s words and folded their hands. They said to Guru ji: “the Mughal Pathaans are still too strong. They have won the whole world. Where did their power come from? We want your command to destroy them all. The Khalsa is strong by your blessing. The Mughal Pathaans will be in the trap of Kaal. They will be mixed with the dust. They will run away like yellow cowards. Bless us so we can fight everyday and loot their states. We will surround their forts and take over.” Guru ji saw the ambition and courage of the Khalsa, he said to them: “I will tell you their history. This is an old katha. Once, Yamraj decided not to kill anyone. He didn’t want to be violent anymore. He went to the jungles to do Tapasya. In some time, the population on earth began to grow. People did not fear death anymore. People had many children and they also had many children. The generations grew. The old were sitting, fearless. There was a great crowd on earth with humans and animals. Life forms were born but none were dying. The villages got crowded. Nobody was afraid. They were no longer following the traditions of the Vedas. The Dev Karmas were not followed. Yagnas, donations, the Simran of Satnam, reciting the Vedas were not being done. Dharma and Karma were renounced. People became egotistical. They started to think that they were Devatas. Since Devatas were immortal, the humans started to think they were immortal as well. They became atheists. The Devatas all got together and went to Brahma. They said to him: “oh Prabhoo! You created the universe and started the traditions for all. You assigned everyone to their tasks. Just as the Digpals (the Devatas of the directions) command the Devatas, that is what we do. We did Tapasya as well, and that is why we were given our powers. You saw our Tapasya and saw us as your servants. You gave us the powers to run the universe. Our duty was to support life. When we do good for the humans, like provide rain, fire, food and age, the humans gave us sacrifices. We were worshipped by the people. All that is gone now. Yamraj has gone to do Tapasya. Nobody is dying anymore. People were afraid of dying and therefore, afraid of the Devatas. Now they are not afraid of anything since no one is dying.” Brahma heard this and said to them: “Karta Purakh, Akaal is gracious. This is his command. Karta can do the impossible. Whatever Akaal Purakh wants, that happens. Don’t be worried and continue your duties. Parmatma will do good.” When Brahma said this to the Devatas, the Devatas went back to their places after bowing to him. They were without worry then. The Devatas did Tapasya and Yamraj’s Tapasya was complete. When Yamraj saw the growing population on Earth, he saw them as being on a boat with too many passengers, the earth was getting heavy. The traditions were unstable. The sins grew. Yamraj got angry and thought of Rudra, the fierce from of Mahakaal. Fires started, storms came. Many died and came to the dimension of Yamraj. Droughts started to occur and people died of famine. Food was hard to find. The survivors travelled to other countries because of famine. When they found out about food, the people went to those places. The people crossed Sutlej and went to the shores of the Beas. They crossed Ravi and Jhelum. They crossed a long way. There was a Gandarv named Jalal. He established a place called Jalalpur, now known as Jalalabad. People reached where now Kandahar is. It used to be known as Gandarv Desh. Their generations spread in that area which is now Afghanistan. When the Kauravs and Pandavs had their conflicts; they had the Mahabharat war where most of their generations from Ghandhaar died. Durjhodan’s Mamma was the king of Ghandhaar. His name was Shakuni. His kingdom was huge. He brought his army from his kingdom that died in the great war of Mahabharat. Arjan killed most of them with his sharp arrows. There were only a few left from the Ghandhaar area. It was mostly the young children that survived. The children in Ghandhaar were orphans. They forgot the castes and didn’t carry on with the old traditions. The castes all inter-married and all ate together. They forget their caste traditions and all got mixed up. Their kids all grew up and married other castes. Their children grew more than expected as they didn’t know how to run society. All of the traditions were destroyed. They started doing their own work. The Brahmins started to act and work as Shudras and vice versa.”
4-3 Moman Sharaf
Guru Gobind Singh ji continued: “as the generations grew, they were all alike. Their traditions all emersed. A daughter named Gorty was born who was fair. There was a king named Moman Sharaf who had accumulated a lot of wealth and land. His head queen was very beautiful. They had a son who was strong, handsome, smart and educated. He made some mistake which made his father upset. He banished his son from his kingdom and did not think of him again. The son then met the subjects in neighbouring lands and started to live with them. He lived amongst the Shankar Varan people for many years. People called him “Shazadah,” the Prince. They knew who he was. He lived in the neighbouring kingdom. He married a girl and had a daughter in a while. The daughter was beautiful. They lived amongst the Shankar people who had no traditions. Years passed and the daughter grew up.
One day, Moman Sharaf travelled the nearby lands to hunt. He soon reached the place where the Shankar Varan people lived. He set up camp with his army in a garden. His son and his family lived there. Moman Sharaf saw a beautiful young girl and was smitten by her beauty. That girl happened to be his own granddaughter from his own son that he had banished. He was unaware that it was his granddaughter. There were other young girls there as well. He was attracted to the girls and wanted to marry them all. He had his army with him, so he captured the young girls. The girls were angry and said: “we won’t marry you. We will eat poison before we marry him. We will hang ourselves or jump into the well.” The girls were stubborn and did not want to marry an old man. Moman Sharaf’s mind was struck by his desires. He bribed the girls with land for their parents along with money. He showed many types of greed to them. When greed comes, Dharam leaves. The girls eventually agreed and married Moman Sharaf. The girls all bore his children in due time.
One of the fathers of the young girls was named Bidyadhar Pathak. The son born from Bidyadhar’s daughter to Moman Sharaf, his name was Potal Khan. There was another named Shieh Sharaf who had a daughter named Shekra. She was beautiful. Moman Sharaf copulated with her. She had a son named Sheikh Saman. The name of his granddaughter was Sajaati. When she had a son by the king, Moman Sharaf asked her: “what is your family name?” Sajaati said: “I am the daughter of Sujaad Rai. I told you because you asked.” When Moman Sharaf heard this, he lowered his eyes in shame as Sujaad Rai was his son’s name. He realised who the girl was and regrated marrying his own granddaughter.
There was a saint named Saraf Hadayat who was a Sai. Moman Sharaf went to him seeing him as a saint. Moman Sharaf served him day and night. He then told him of the sin that he had committed without knowing. Everyone followed Saraf Hadayat, for he was a saint that did Bhagti. After many days, Saraf Hadayat spoke: “there will be a time when Sajaati’s children will multiply. They will be called “Syed.” That will be your generation. They will protect your children. You should do Bhagti of the Lord. Sit here and perform the Chaleesa (Simran for 40 days). You sinned without knowing. Your sin will be washed away with Tapasya.” Guru ji told the Singhs this Katha. Guru ji continued: “listen Singhs, think about this: the ones that ran away from the Jumm during his time he was performing his Tapasya, they were killed by Arjan in the war of Mahabharat. Bheem Sain and the other Pandavs killed thousands of them. It was Kaal that lead a lot of these Shankar Varan people to that war. Most of them were killed. Mahakaal is the great death of death. It is omnipotent and has a fierce form. Akaal Purakh created millions of Vishnus and Shivas. I have come with my servants (the lions with Dusht Daman ji who did Bhagti with him) to destroy the four Sheiks.” The Singhs were surprised to hear this. They had just heard the history which was ancient. This history was not written in any Granth. It was deep and amazing. They said to Guru ji: “you are the true Paatshaah. Please tell us the history from your mouth. Will all of the Shankar Varanis die? Will any survive?” Guru ji said: “the ones that renounce their religion, they will survive. There is no command from Prabhoo to destroy those ones. The ones from that generation will all be destroyed though. In this area, none will survive. 125 years after I leave, the Khalsa will destroy them. After that, there will be time periods where more will be destroyed. Their roots will be pulled.” In this way, Guru ji explained the history to the Singhs. It was time for Guru ji to go home. He got up and went to his home. The Singhs went to their homes. They all ate and slept the night.
The next day, the Khalsa came to meet Guru ji at Amritvela. They all bowed and sat with Guru ji. They all roared their Fatehs and sat down. They had their weapons fastened. Guru ji would say the Kathas of kings, saints and warriors. Some Singhs said: “the Pahari Rajas have all banded together. They travel together now through the villages, fear of being taken over. They want to surround Anandpur Sahib. They want to fight you. Sometimes they come to fight us. They’re always fighting the Singhs. Their senior officers say: “if the Guru comes, we will show him our might.” The kings can’t fight though. Their armies fight. They want to fight you and make you leave this place.” Guru ji heard this and said: “I will go myself with you tomorrow morning. It’s been a long time since I’ve gone hunting. We will go where the lions live.” Many other discussions took place with the Singhs. That night, Satguru ji slept.
The next day, Guru ji went hunting. The Ranjit Nagara was played. It roared loud like the thunder. The Khalsa fastened their horses and dressed them up. They fastened their weapons; guns and swords; and mounted their horses. Guru ji got dressed and fastened his weapons. His wootz sword had a golden hilt. He fastened his quiver. His Kalgi and Jigha had precious stones in it. Guru ji asked for his horse. When his horse came, Guru ji jumped to mount it. The Ranjit Nagaras sounded and the mountains trembled. The guns were ready to fire. The Singhs followed Guru ji with their strong steeds. The Khalsa headed deep into the jungle to hunt. They hunted many deer and wild bore. The sounds of the guns firing, echoed. The Nagara sounded loud. There was a lot of noise in the jungle. Guru ji travelled the mountains, hunting on the way. Guru ji rode up a mountain, stopping at the highest point. He looked all around and set an arrow on his bow. He pulled the arrow to his ear and released it. The arrow made a loud noise when it flew. The mountains trembled from the sound of Guru j’s bowstring. The sky above trembled. There was a loud noise. The sky spoke out to Guru ji: “Guru ji have mercy on us! There is no one equal to you. Please let go of your anger and have mercy on us! We are yours. Have mercy on us!” Guru ji dismounted his blue horse and started to hunt.
4-4 Battling with Baliya Chand and Aalam Chand
Guru ji hunted and travelled quite far. The sounds of the nagaras and bullets echoed throughout the mountains. The Rajas were camped nearby where Guru ji was hunting. The Pahari Rajas were proud of their kingdoms. Baliya Chand and Aalam Chand were with their armies. They heard the Singhs’ Jaikaras, the sounds of the Nagaras and the sounds of the bullets. The Rajas got ready and mobilized their armies. They had thousands of soldiers with them. They wanted to show their bravery by capturing Guru Gobind Singh ji. They were looking to get rewards and praises for doing this. They said to each other: “look! We are finally getting a chance to do what we wanted.” Both these Rajas loved to fight on the battlefield. They brought their armies and came in front of Guru Gobind Singh ji and his army. The bullets began to fire from both sides. The Singhs were less in numbers. They had their weapons though, but not as much as the Pahari army. Kalgidhar ji had noticed that the Khalsa did not do as he said. He didn’t want them to fight so offensively in the front. Guru ji faced east and took his horse. The Khalsa fought for some time and then noticed that Guru ji wasn’t with them: “Guru ji left us! What is the reason? We wonder what Guru ji wanted to do. He may be mad with us.” As they noticed that Guru ji wasn’t with them, they lost their will to fight and retreated. When the Paharis noticed that the Khalsa lost their will to fight, they came ahead with a fiercer attack. The swords were swung and many limbs were sliced. The land was red with blood. There were bodies everywhere. There were limbs cut everywhere. It was a scary sight. The warriors fought with bravery from both sides. Some Singhs came to Guru ji and said to him: “Guru ji, save us! Many Singhs have died. Please come and protect us. For the sake of your greatness, please come. The lion does not look good without the jungle; the jungle does not look good without the lions. This is what we heard. You are the Lion and look good with the Singhs.” Guru ji then spoke: “the Singhs read Bani and then think they have faith on the Guru. They are proud of reciting Bani. The Singhs thought that they are the lion and they are the jungle. Now you want the Master to come for the sake of his greatness?” Guru ji mounted his bow with five arrows from his quiver and released them. The arrows flew with great speed and caused chaos among the army. Guru ji summoned the Army of the Shaheeds. The Shaheeds appeared and the Pahari Army saw thousands upon thousands of Singhs. A fierce battle started from both sides. The sleeping Rudra Ras was fully awake now. The warriors fought each other without backing down. The ones that wanted to leave, came back to fight. The Khalsa fired their bullets like rain from the clouds. The metal clanked on metal and there was blood everywhere. The warriors were grinding their teeth with anger. The bodies were drenched in blood. They looked like they came after playing Holi. It looked like red flowers had blossomed on their bodies. Guru ji stood under a tree and watched the battle. Guru looked upon both armies, as he was the master of all. The warriors fought with bravery. They had Guru ji’s powers to fight. The Khalsa cut down whoever was in front. The enemy was cut down. The Shaheeds descended from the sky and began to fight as well. The Pahari Rajas were surprised to see the thousands of Singhs fighting. They looked like black thundering clouds. They were the army wearing blue. The bullets fired and the guns flashed like lightening. The dhols and nagaras sounded. The army of the Paharis were destroyed like hail ruining the fields. They charged with force. The Pahari army retreated. Baliya Chand was brave and charged forward. He saw his army retreating and yelled at them.
Bhai Uday Singh ji came with Singhs into the battle. Raja Aalam Chand came fighting waiving his sword. Bhai Aalam Singh ji Nachna saw Aalam Chand coming. Bhai Aalam Singh came to fight Raja Aalam Chand. They were two lions fighting each other. Both were brave and strong warriors. They fought with swords and shields. They went right and then left. They blocked a strike and struck. Sparks came from their strikes. Aalam Chand swung his sword to kill Bhai Aalam Singh. Aalam Singh blocked the strike and swung his sword right away. His strike cut off Aalam Chand’s arm that was carrying his sword. Aalam Chand lost his right arm. Aalam Singh was about to kill him but Aalam Chand retreated backwards. Bhai Aalam Singh ji was victorious and shouted out: “Vahiguru ji ka Khalsa, Vahiguru ji ki Fateh!”
Baliya Chand came with a strong charge. The dhols and nagaras sounded. Baliya Chand called out to the soldiers to fight. He shot many arrows that took down many Singhs. Bhai Uday Singh ji came to fight Baliya Chand. Bhai Uday Singh said to the Singhs with him: “kill the enemy! They are coming.” The Khalsa fired hard and hit the thigh of Baliya Chand, breaking his leg. The Pahari army retreated along with Baliya Chand. After Baliya Chand broke his leg, the rest of the army all retreated, cowardly. The Shaheed army killed many that were still there. Many surrendered and many ran away.
Bhai Ram Koer ji, dictating to the Singhs said: “I was there with Satguru ji at that time. I was young then and got scared seeing the Singhs dead all around me. My body was trembling. I saw this battle with my own eyes. It was a scary battle. Guru ji saw me being scared. He said to me, while smiling and releasing arrows at the same time: “just as Udho ji was given Brahmgyaan and Krishan ji left this earth; the Guru will do the same with you. The Guru will leave Gurbaksh Singh (Bhai Ram Koer ji’s Amrit name) and leave this earth. Don’t be scared! Don’t be scared! Become fearless.” When Kalgidhar ji said this, I began to cry. He loved me like Krishan ji loved Sudama. Guru ji saw me crying and said: “look how the Khalsa is coming back, victorious. It’s a time for celebration now. Don’t cry. Look at the fierce battle standing up.” As he was speaking to me and shooting his arrows, the Pahari army all retreated. The ones that stayed were killed. The ones that retreated were allowed to leave. The Army of the Shaheeds completed their tasks and disappeared into the sky. They went back to Sach Khand in front of our eyes. The Khalsa came back and met Guru ji under the tree. Guru ji looked at them with blessings. He gave them courage and said: “these Paharis are Hindus but they fight us.” The Khalsa said: “these Paharis are like monkeys. We are lions and they are monkeys. The lions eat monkeys.” Guru ji heard this and smiled. He said to the Singhs: “listen to me. These Paharis are proud of their kingdom. They don’t accept the will of Parmeshwar. They don’t understand the doings of Parmeshwar. Their time is coming. They will not be spared. Their pride will be crushed. If they leave their pride, then it’s good. If they don’t, the Khalsa will crush them. Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji did a great thing by started a third Panth. The one who made these kings, he will cure this disease as well.” Guru ji said this three times: “the enemies, like a disease, will be gone if you do Simran and fight.” The Khalsa was happy to hear this that Guru ji was bestowing his blessings on them and that he was happy. Guru ji asked: “how was the battle?” Bhai Maha Singh ji said: “the two Rajas were injured with your blessings. Their soldiers were injured and left the battlefield. They ran away screaming in pain. By your power, the Khalsa was victorious.” Satguru ji then spoke: “gather all of the bodies of the Singhs and put them together. Cremate their bodies together in one place.” The Singhs obeyed and gathered the bodies of the dead Singhs. They were all cremated. The injured were picked up and brought back to Anandpur.
As they all came back to Anandpur, the Nagaras of victory were sounding. Everyone celebrated the victory. The enemy were disappointed in their loss.
4-5 The Rajas’ Decision/ Qazi Salaar Deen
When the Pahari Rajas heard of the battle that took place; 2 of the Rajas were injured; they were upset. They said: “he came with a few men and injured 2 Rajas who had big armies. We sent a full army with the Rajas and they still had to retreat. Our Rajas were proud and strong. They were experts in warcraft. They still lost against the Guru. How can this be? They were injured and ran back. If the Guru had more men, what would have happened then? Our kingdoms are not safe. The Guru collects men from lower castes. They are Jaats and laborers. He made them into Singhs by giving them the Pahul. What is in the Pahul that makes the lower castes so strong? They carry the swords and guns. They don’t cut their hair. They wear a Dastaar and a Kachera. They are always shouting Jaikaras of becoming kings and destroying Delhi and Lahore. They don’t care about Kings. They are proud of themselves. They are always shouting “kill.” They are growing in numbers by the day. New people take the Pahul everyday. It is like the moon growing on the Ekam (new moon) to Pooranmaashi (full moon). We should do something about this. They are still few in numbers. We can do something now. A small plant can be pulled by the root easily. When it becomes a tree, elephants can’t even pull it. We should uproot the Khalsa now. A spark can be put out quickly. If the spark becomes a forest fire, then nothing can be done. In a few days they will become lions and eat all of us. When they become strong, they will roar. No one will be able to face them then. They are only a few hundred in numbers which are hard to handle. If they grow to the thousands, who will fight them then?” The Rajas had discussions in this way. They decided to contact Aurangzeb and call for his army. Nauranga was in the South at that time. There was a Sooba in Delhi to take care of the royal and administrative tasks. The Rajas decided to send an ambassador to Delhi. They instructed the ambassador on what to say. They prepared thousands of Rajitpuns, weapons and horses to send as gifts. They sent expensive gifts for the Sooba of Delhi to make him happy. They wrote a letter that complained about Guru Gobind Singh ji: “the Guru has caused chaos in our area. He proclaims that he has created the Khalsa. He has fought us many times. He is your enemy and does not accept your command. He invites conflict to his home and is always ready to fight. He will definitely fight you one day. He is getting ready to attack Delhi. We are telling you this news in advance. He can still be stopped. Otherwise his army is getting bigger by the day. Many are joining the Khalsa. We want you to send an army. We will assist them. We want Guru Gobind Singh ji to leave Anandpur.” They all signed the letter and instructed the ambassador to speak to the Sooba.
The ambassador went to Delhi and met the Sooba. He presented the gifts and made him happy. He told the Sooba: “I’ve been sent by the Pahari Rajas.” He presented the letter. The Sooba read the letter and said to the ambassador: “we will figure something out. Tell them not to worry.” The ambassador kept the gifts. The Rajas prepared their armies, fearing Guru ji. They didn’t sleep during the night either. The Singhs would attack the fields at night. They hunted during the night.
One day, Guru ji held a court. A lot of Sangat came to see Guru ji. They brought many types of gifts for Guru ji. The Ardaasia stood up and did the Ardaas for the Sangat. Some brought Paisas and some brought Rajitpuns. They were all sent to the treasury. Piles of money and gifts would gather. Guru ji completed the wishes of his servants. There was a Qazi named Qazi Salaar Deen. He was a true Bhagat. He was not a fake. He didn’t hate Hindus, Sikhs or Muslims. He treated everyone equally. He came to see Guru Gobind Singh ji after hearing his praises. He sat in the Divaan and felt a great bliss. He saw how the Sangat met Guru ji and how the processes of the Guru’s home happened. He sat for a long time. He had a doubt in his mind and wanted to ask Guru ji his question. He was looking for a time to speak to Guru ji. When the crowd was less, he saw an opportunity to speak to Guru ji. He said to Guru ji: “Guru ji, why do the people do Ardaas to you? How do you bless people? I didn’t understand this. Whatever Khuddah was decided for a person to receive, that is what they receive and experience. Everyone lives by their Karma. It is the same thing in the Hindu religion. Islam says the same thing too. Everyone receives what is written. Nobody can erase that. Khuddah gives joy or sorrow. You say that one can do an Ardaas in your court and get what they want. Is this not a lie? How are you getting them to do an Ardaas?” Guru ji said to the Qazi: “Qazi ji, you are wise. What you are saying is true but they way I give, l will show you.” Guru ji called for a scribe and told him to bring a paper and ink. Guru ji took out his personal stamp and showed it to the Qazi. Guru ji said: “read my stamp.” The Qazi couldn’t read it as it was backwards, as stamps are made to read in the right way only after they are inked and stamped. They Qazi said: “I can’t read this. It is backwards.” Guru ji inked the stamp and stamped it on the paper. Guru ji said: “nothing can be done by looking at the stamp but after I ink it and stamp it, it is easily read. The backward words are straight again. I wanted to show you this. When a person is born, they live by their karma. Whatever their destiny is, it is written on their forehead. The words are backwards like the stamp. When Akaal Purakh writes the destiny, they are backwards but when the same person bows to the Guru with humility, the backwards words are straightened. Vidhatta writes the destiny but when the person bows to the Guru or peers with humility, their bad karma becomes good. Their karma gives them joy and their tasks are fulfilled. The ones who do not bow to the Guru or Peer, the karma remains backwards. The Sikh should have faith on the Guru. They then get wealth, children and joy. There is no doubt to this.” The Qazi heard this and was filled with bliss. He stood up and folded his hands. He bowed his head and saluted Guru ji in his way. He praised Guru ji: “Prabhoo ji, you destroyed my doubts. Wow! You are wise and make others wise too. As soon as I saw you, I noticed that you were the form of Khuddah. I come to your sanctuary. Your feet, I bow to, they are the ones that help a person cross this world. I am without doubts now. There is no one who can answer questions as you do. There is no one wiser than you. They way you showed me, nobody else can give wisdom like this.” Guru ji had the Qazi sit near him with respect. The Qazi asked more questions and was happy with the responses.
Guru ji met the Sangat and granted them their wishes. Some asked for children and some asked for wealth. Guru ji then got up and went to his home. The Khalsa bowed and felt bliss. They all went to their home as well, singing Guru ji’s praises. Guru ji sat in his room in solitude. Everyone slept the night. Guru ji slept and woke up at Amritvela. He bathed and did his Nitnem.
