3-6 Nainay da Tilla
Saffron, elachis, almonds, coconut and other items were ordered and came on top of carts. Ghee was bought and brought in huge pots along with cloves, barley, sesame seeds, and rice. They were all brought to Anandpur. Whatever was needed, that was called for from far away cities. Everything was ready. Keshav Das was called to Guru ji. He came and sat down close to Guru ji. Guru ji said to him: “Pandit ji, whatever you asked for has been gathered and brought here. You must read the Mantras to do the Havan now. Whichever day and place you think is good, start the Havan.” Keshav Das replied: “I will begin the Havan but I will take 1 Lakh Rupees to do the Havan. Whatever is according to the traditions of the Vedas; Tantrotic Shasters, I will do that. I will complete your wishes. I can’t guarantee that Chandi will appear though. I will do what is needed, that is written in the Shasters. You have the power to fulfill this. Whatever is the good thing or bad thing, this is all in your hands, Satguru ji. I can only do the Havan according to the traditions. I will direct the Havan and read the Mantras with a still mind. I will not let any thought come into my mind. You will need to stay pure with your mind and body. Everything is in your control. Kaam is of 8 types: to look towards women, listening about women, praising women; touching, speaking secrets, engaging in physical contact, thinking about women, sitting beside women; all will have to be rejected and you will need to be brahmacharya.” Guru ji heard him and said: “Pandit ji, I will give you 1.25 Lakhs. I will do all that you have said. Many types of Samaghri have been collected. Don’t worry about anything. There will be no obstacles. You should do the task with determination and make the Shakti of Akaal Purakh appear. Find the good time to begin this. Do Ardaas at the feet of Guru Nanak Dev ji and begin. The Sikhs are bringing more items.” Keshav Das was happy to see Guru ji’s determination and said: “you are great Guru ji! There is no other gracious and generous person like you. You have taken on the responsibility to make the Shakti appear to take away the kingdom from the sinner Mughals. You aren’t doing this for you or your kids, but for the whole country. You are the greatest. I am saying this for your benefit. You will need to eat little and stay awake for this.” Keshav Das looked at his Jyotish calculations and found that the day of full moon in Vaisakh, Pukh Nachattar (Cancer) was the best time to begin. It was to be Thursday, the day of the Gurus. That was the day to begin. “Guru ji, the best time is the Thursday, which is the full moon in Vaisakh. There are only a few days till then. Make the preparations and find a nice open space for it. Make all the Samaghri available for it. Show me the pure place. We will sit there.” Guru ji began to think about the mountain. “The place of Nainay da Tilla is the best place. There were some farmers there that farmed with animals. There was a beautiful cow there with a pure soul on the mountain. She would graze that area up till the place of Naina Devi. The cow would stay there for hours. The milk would come out by itself. All the milk would make the ground rich on the mountain. She would wash the area of the Mandir. She would come back to the other cows in the evening. The name of her owner was Naina. When Naina would milk the cow, there would be no milk. He was amazed to see that the milk was not there. He wondered where the milk went. This happened a few times. He asked around but nobody knew what happened. One day, he let the cow go in the morning and followed her from afar. He wanted to know who took the milk. It was evening. The cow reached the Mandir and the milk began to flow. The cow circumvented the area three times and bowed. Naina saw this and was amazed. He bowed to the area and came back home. He told the wise people of his village. The wise people saw the place and recognized it as a holy place. Naina then cleaned the place up. He then had a Mandir constructed. People started to call the place Naina Devi. People came and bowed to the place. They noticed that people’s wishes would be fulfilled here. This place was the highest of all the mountains in the area. It was hard to walk up this area. The area is not crowded and good for doing tapp. I think this place is the purest and there won’t be any disturbances there. Let’s go there in the morning so you can see the place. We will have the place cleaned up. We will set up camp there.” Keshav Das was happy to hear this. He said: “you are right.” Keshav Das went back to his camp and thought about the great task ahead.
In the morning, Guru ji called for Keshav Das. They all started slowly up the mountain. The place was beautiful and quiet. They all loved the area. Keshav Das said: “this place is beautiful. You have thought well. Devi will certainly appear here. Jagdamba will appear here. I have seen that everything is happening well. I am sure Chandi will come. Your praises will be forever. The whole world will praise you. There have been many great and powerful Kings but they were not able to do such a great Havan that you are about to do. You have the Tapasya required and so do I. You have the will to make the Mother appear. Aad Shakti is the one who killed Madh Kaitubh, Rakatbheej and Shumb Nishumb. She is the one that lives in the eyes. Nobody else is able to do this but you.” Guru ji said to the Sikhs: “clean the area and make a few houses to live here. We will have the Samaghri stored here. Make the Havan Kund that is required.” Keshav Das said: “make the Kund so that nobody else can come here. Have guards standing at the front. Nobody is to cause any disturbances. The Bhagti has to be strict.” The Sikhs did what was asked. Divaan ji did all the preparation. Guru ji came back down with Keshav Das.
The Samaghri was stored up the mountain in the newly built houses. Guru ji was waiting for the day of the full moon. Everyday, Keshav Das would sit with Guru ji and talk about knowledge. He would learn new things from Guru ji. The preparations continued. Many pounds of sweets were prepared. Ghee, rice, sugar and other Samaghri was sent up the mountain. The place was beautiful. The Haven Kund was prepared as directed.
3-7 The Havan Begins
The full moon day of Vaisakh arrived. There was a great celebration that day, as everyone was waiting for it. The Naubats and Dhundhabs sounded. Everyone was happy. Conches and Napheeryas were blown with enthusiasm. The sound of the conches resonated throughout the area. The Dhols and Mridangs were played with the murlees. Everyone said: “Jai Jagdamba.” The poor people were given food, clothes and money. Everyone said: “Jai Guru ji!” Langar was made along with Karah Prashaad. Garlands of flowers were hung from the doors. Incense was lit with sandalwood and other essences. The auspicious time had arrived and Keshav Das came to Guru ji’s court, along with other Brahmins. Keshav Das gave his blessings and sat down. Guru ji kept the best of the best Brahmins and scholars with him. He kept the pious ones with him, who were knowledgeable in the Vedas. The leaders of the religion were there. They were all standing in Guru ji’s court. Keshav Das ji directed everyone. Keshav Das and Guru ji went to Mata Gujri ji for her blessings. They did the Ardaas to all the 9 Gurus, asking for their blessings for this great task ahead of them. They asked the Mother of the Universe to assist them to make this task a success. This task was for the good of the whole world.
Guru ji walked towards the mountain. A Sikh had lit the incense in a big spatula ahead of Guru ji as he walked. Flowers were showered on Guru ji as he walked. The Brahmins followed behind. The Masands and thousands of Sikhs walked as well towards the mountain of Naina Devi. Guru ji stood their and then said to everyone: “everyone should go back home from here.” Guru ji mounted his horse and proceeded up the treacherous terrain of the mountain. Some of the army was stationed at the foot of the mountain so nobody comes up. They needed to be in total stillness as the Havan was going to be performed. Guru ji, along with Keshav Das, were going up the mountain. Keshav Das did not expect this task and was overwhelmed. The other Brahmins walked up the mountain slowly, along with some Sikhs and soldiers. The path was difficult to climb. Sometimes they had to grab on to bushes to go up. Some were on horses and some were walking on foot. Only Guru ji was able to go up the mountain on his horse.
They all soon reached the peak of the mountain, along with the Brahmins. Guru ji got off his horse. The Brahmins directed the traditions. The Samaghri was already there. Many Sevadaars had brought it up. On the west side of the Havan Kund sat Guru ji, on its southern border, the Brahmins all sat down. Everyone washed up before they sat down. Everyone else was asked to go back. The mantra of 16 words was directed to be chanted. (Achkara Chand was recited here which Guru ji included in his Gurbani) Satguru ji was told to chant and say “Svaha,” by putting Ahooti into the fire. The fire was lit by chanting the Arnee Mantra. Two pieces of wood were rubbed against each other to make the fire appear. Keshav Das took great care while he recited the Mantras. Guru ji began to recite the Mantras. When Svaha was said, Ahooti was placed in the fire. Incense was lit along with other essences. Sandalwood and rose water were sprinkled everywhere for great smell. The smoke rose upwards and reached the dimensions of the Devatas. As the Achkara Chand was recited, the smells reached the Devatas. The Ahooti continued and the fire grew. They thought of the Aad Shakti, the power of Akaal Purakh, as the Havan carried on. They remembered the Chattarbhuji (the one who is in all four directions), Chandershekhri (the one with the moon on the forehead), her radiance is very scary. She blesses her servants. When she is angry, she eats the sinners. She is the Ashtbhuji (the one with 8 arms). She holds weapons in all 8 arms and is radiating in all 8 directions. Lava and fire come out of her mouth. Her eyes are red and has a garland of skulls around her neck. Her hair is open and scary. Her mouth is scary like a lion. She has a bowl full of blood in her hands. Her body is black and naked. Her molars and teeth are sharp. This is the Shakti of Akaal Purakh that eats the whole world. There is a snake in her hand that blows hard. The snake signifies death. Her skin is dry and her nails are big and sharp. Fire comes out of her mouth. This is the form that they were meditating on. They all calmed their minds down and made it still. After reading the Chands and pouring Ahooti, the flame would rise upwards. Ghee and other items were poured in the fire. Guru ji sat in one Aasan for the first day. There was no other wish in his mind but to have the Shakti of Akaal Purakh appear. After 15 hours Guru ji sat there with his back straight and chanting the Mantras. The Ahooti and home was added into the fire. The Mantras that were recited, the Ahooti was given. Guru ji and Keshav Das got up at 9 pm. They rested for 5 hours and woke up at Amritvela.
They all bathed and got ready for the second day. Keshav Das sat down on the southern side of the Havan Kund. Guru ji sat at the western side. They began to recite the Mantras again. Guru ji did the Jaap and poured Ahooti. Sesame seed oil was poured and the fire rose to the skies. They all sat in one Aasan. Their mind was still and focused on the Chandi. They had won their wish to sleep and eat food. They had conquered their thirst and wish to speak. The purest of all, Guru ji, was sitting and reciting the Mantras. The 2nd day ended in the same way after 15 hours. They did this for 15 hours everyday.
The closest Sikhs were concerned with Guru ji’s well-being. They said: “Guru ji would sit in nice beds but he is not resting. He is sitting in such a strict Havan.” They did not understand that he was the power of Akaal Purakh and did not need any rest. But the Sikhs loved him and were always concerned with Guru ji’s rest. They would say: “Guru ji sleeps on the ground and does not eat rich foods. He sits for 15 hours a day. He gets up at 10 pm and walks around for a bit. He lays down but he only meditates on the Chandi at night. He has let go of hunger, sleep and thirst. Prabhoo sleeps less and wakes up early to sit in the Havan everyday.” Keshav Das ji was getting tired with this strict meditation. He was not able to keep up with Guru ji. For many days this carried on. Guru ji followed all the traditions. All the Samaghri would be placed close by, by the Sikhs. They would stay quiet when they would bring the items. Many Munns of ghee would be sent along with dry fruits. Sugar was brought. As the Brahmins would direct, the items would be mixed in great big pots. The pots would be empty by the evening and then the Sikhs would refill them. Guru ji would put Ahooti as much was required and recited the Mantras. Guru ji chanted the Mantras without stopping.
The whole world found out that Guru ji was doing a Havan to make the Chandi appear. Keshav Das ji would get up after a little while but Guru ji would not move. He was focused on the Havan. Guru ji was the only one reciting the Mantra. He was fully focused into Chandi. He wanted to make the Shakti appear so the Khalsa can be created. He wanted the Shakti to come into the Khalsa so the sinners could be killed. He wanted the blessing from the Shakti of Akaal Purakh so the new Panth could be created.
3-8 The Hunt/ Home
Everyday, the chanting went on for 15 hours. It had been about 40 days. Keshav Das requested Guru ji to lower that to 5 hours: “Sri Prabhoo ji, 15 hours is too much. Lakhs of Ahootis are required. Please don’t do such a strict Tapasya. You sit for 15 hours. Let’s do this slowly.” Guru accepted the request. He bathed and sat for only 5 hours in the morning. He would put Ahooti and recited the Mantras till noon. He still ate and slept less. He only ate kheer and other simple foods. He did not speak to anyone else all day or night. He was in full control of his mind and only thought of the Chandi Charitar.
One day, Guru ji had his Shaheedi Degh with Chatterdhaara. He bathed and put his weapons on. He commanded for his horse to be saddled. He told the Sikhs that he wanted to go hunting. His horse came and Guru ji went hunting after many days. He went into the thick of the forest with many warriors. They hunted many deer and wild bore. He shot the running animals with arrows. He flew his falcons and hawks to hunt. He sent out his dogs and other hunting animals. Cheetahs were with him as well. He hunted the whole afternoon and came back to Anandpur in the evening. The hunted animals were loaded onto the carts and horses. Keshav Das saw the animals. He noticed that there were many animals killed: deer, fowl and other animals. They were hanging on to the elephants and horses. When Keshav Das saw this, he was filled with pity. He came to Guru ji in the court. He went up to Guru ji and gave his blessings. He bowed to Guru ji as well and sat down on his stool. Guru ji looked towards Keshav Das. Keshav Das said to Guru ji: “the Seva of Rajas is difficult. If the Raja wishes to ask something, then the ministers think deep and tell the Raja. If the Raja does not ask anything, then the minister is not right to give advice without being called upon. The saints work like this: they advise the Raja if it’s a good thing. Sometimes they will give advice without asking. It is up to the Raja to agree or disagree. For this reason, I am going to give you advice: you are doing a great Tapasya to make the Shakti of Akaal Purakh appear. I don’t wish to have any obstacles in the way. You are donating a lot of items. I wish to have this Havan be successful, quickly. You hunted many animals today. You have done “hinsa” (violence). You are the leader of all the scholars and saints. I ask you to think about this: Parmatma is the supreme. Parmatma lives in all life. Whatever you see, Parmatma is everywhere. Hinsa is not good. It is not good to kill the form of Hari. You killed many deer today along with rabbits and birds. I wish to have the Havan be a success. Otherwise people will laugh at us. Please keep your focus on Chandi and that she appears. There is nothing worse than killing someone. The rest is your wish what you would like to do. I just wanted to advise you. Please think about all this. My words, however they are, if you like it, you can follow it. Otherwise, please forgive me.” Hearing Keshav Das’ words, Guru ji figured that his heart was affected by the dead animals. Guru ji said to the warrior Sikhs: “take all the hunted animals and open them up. I need to keep Pandit ji happy. I will listen to him.” All the animals were untied. As soon as they were opened up, they all became alive again. The birds flew to the skies and the other animals, startled, ran away to the jungles. The deer ran away and the bore ran away. It was as if they were never dead and were just tied up. Keshav Das was extremely shocked to see this. He said: “you are great Guru Gobind Singh ji! You are a complete Purakh. You are omnipotent and all-powerful. Killing and giving life is in your hand. I didn’t understand you before today. I didn’t know you are so powerful. You are the Ishwar of this universe. You are the Devata of Devatas. You are the Guru of Gurus. You are truly the Guru of the universe. You can make your Sikhs troubles go away. You save them from the Jumms. You are above sin and virtue. You are not affected by the Karma Chakra. You are the master of the Universe but you live like a human. Whoever you bless, they know your real form. They will see the Parmatma form inside of you. I am certain now; I have faith in you. You are the greatest Avatar ever. You came to Earth for Dharma.” Guru ji said: “I am doing everything according to your instructions. Till the Shakti doesn’t appear, I will do everything you say. If you don’t want me to hunt, I won’t hunt.” Keshav Das was happy to hear this and went back to his camp.
Keshav Das thought to himself: “I have the joy of the world because I will get a lot of money from Guru ji. I will be praised in the world, wherever the Sikhs will be. My name will be immortal with them. Whoever will do the Katha of the Sikhs and Gurus, the Katha of Jagdamba appearing will also be said and will have my name in it. Thousands of people will hear my name. Guru Gobind Singh ji is the son of Akaal Purakh. His praises are spread throughout the world just like the full moon’s rays in the world. Guru ji will give me Mukti as well. He will be with me and assist me. I was very fortunate that I met Guru ji. There is no doubt of Chandi appearing. He is doing what is required by human. He wants to give me the praises. He is the one to make the Shakti appear. He is doing this for me. I must have some good karma.” He was extremely happy to see Guru ji being so powerful.
Guru ji ate and rested the night on his bed. The gracious Guru woke up at Amritvela. He had Shaheedi Degh and Chatterdhaara in the morning. He bathed and got ready. He wore his clothes and fastened his weapons. Guru ji called Keshav Das. He mounted his horse and went up the mountain. Keshav Das was sat in a Palanquin. They took all the Samaghri and went to Naina Devi. The master reached the top very quickly. They did the Havan for 5 hours and read the Mantras. Guru ji sat on one side of the Havan Kund and Keshav Das sat on the other side. Guru ji had no other desire in his mind. He sat with the Brahmins and cleansed his body. He meditated on the Chandi. They all recited the Mantras and poured Ahooti into the fire. The fire would roar upwards when the Ahooti would be added. Guru ji obeyed all the rules of the Havan. Keshav Das would be really happy as the Havan carried on. The traditions were all followed. After 5 hours, Guru ji came back to Anandpur. There was a celebration when he would come back. He would eat and sleep less. He would not engage in any unnecessary conversations with anyone. Guru ji really wanted the Shakti to come.
3-9 Meeting in the Dream
The Havan was being performed with the correct traditions for 5 months. Thousands of Munns (or Maunds; in the old scales, it is not clear what the exact weight was but the research shows it was any where from 40 lbs to 160lbs for 1 Munn), of Samaghri had been used. It was now the light phase of the moon in the month of Asoo (September/October), the ninth day of the light phase. The worship and Mantra Jaap of Chandi was being done. Many Havans and Matras were performed. It was midnight and Guru ji was asleep. The Devi came into Guru ji’s dream. The Mother of the Universe came into his dream and gave him a sign, that she will come. She said: “my son, keep reciting the Mantras. Keep pouring the Samaghri and meditate on me. I will come when the time is right. I will come to you and appear in front of you. I will fulfill your wishes. I will bless you with victory. Whatever you are asking for, you shall receive.” Guru ji only slept for 4 hours. Guru ji woke up from the dream and bathed. He was happy with the dream. He got dressed and put his weapons on. Keshav Das ji came to Guru ji. Guru ji told Keshav Das about his dream. Keshav Das was happy to hear this. He was seeing the fruit of his labor coming to him. He praised the Chandi and bowed. He said to Guru ji: “we will definitely be successful. The day you see Mata, that day will be blessed. We received half of a blessing today. You have seen her in your dream. When she appears in front of us, that will have her full blessing. Let’s continue with the Havan and meditate on the Mother. Recite the Mantras. The work will be done. We will be victorious.” Guru ji heard Pandit ji and sat down for the Havan. He did the strict Aasan. Now Guru ji has taken his Tapasya to its boundaries. After his dream, he sat for 36 hours straight in the same Aasan. The fire would roar upwards as the Ahooti was poured. He sat from Amritvela to the evening of the next day. He recited the Mantras for a day and a half. He stopped after 36 hours. He would eat little and sleep on the ground. He rested and relaxed for the next 12 hours after sitting for 36 hours and begin again for 36 hours. He kept on adding Ahooti to the Havan.
The whole world was amazed to see this strict Tapasya. The Sikhs and Masands were amazed to see this. Day and night, Guru ji would only think about the Mother of the Universe. His focus was in the Chattarbhuji (the one that is existing in all four directions). There was no difference between him and the Shakti of Akaal Purakh. For many days, Guru ji did this strict Aasan. He did this for the happiness of the Jagat Mata.
Guru ji changed his daily routine. He would wake up at Amritvela and bathe. He would start the Havan before the sun came up. He would sit for 6 hours now. He would stay the night on top of the mountain and would come to Anandpur sometimes. The Sangat from the East: Bengal, Patna and other cites came to see Guru ji. They came from Brahmaputra, Dhaka, Patna and Maksoodabad to Anandpur. They brought many gifts for Guru ji. They camped in Anandpur. Thousands of Sikhs had come. They heard that Guru ji was worshiping the Mother of the Universe at Naina Devi. They all took the Masands and went to Naina Devi, where the gracious Guru was sitting and doing the Havan. He was reciting the Mantras. Guru ji got up after reciting for 6 hours. There were floors laid out there. Guru ji held a Divaan on top of the mountain. The Sangat met Guru ji and had their wishes fulfilled. The Mevras announced the Divaan. The Masands came to the court with the Sangat. They placed the gifts at Guru ji’s feet. The Sangat really wanted to see Guru ji. They folded their hands and bowed to Guru ji, placing their gifts.
There was a gardener from Patna that had come. He met Guru ji and bowed to his feet. Guru ji looked at the gardener and said: “Maali ji (Gardener), you have come from Patna. What have you brought?” The gardener said: “I am a poor gardener and have planted many gardens, Guru ji. I have brought a special species of a mango plant for you. I will plant it where you will command me to.” Guru ji heard this and grabbed his bow. He placed an arrow and released it. The arrow flew and came down the mountain, 4 km away. He said to the gardener: “go and plant the plant where my arrow has landed.” Some Sikhs went with the gardener to find the arrow. They located the arrow and saw that the front end of the arrow was into the ground and the back-side was sticking upwards. The place was dug and prepared. The mango tree was planted there. The mango tree was taken care of by the Sangat. Kavi Santokh Singh ji has heard about the mango tree but did not get to see it with his own eyes. He did confirm that he heard it still existed during his time. The Sangat from the East was very happy and blessed by Guru ji. They were given Siropas and had their wishes fulfilled. They were full of joy and left, praising Guru ji. They went back to their homes and told everyone about Guru ji. They said: “Guru ji is going to protect the Hindu Dharma. He is worshiping the Chandi to destroy the Mughal Kingdom. He is doing a strict Tapasya. He eats and sleeps less.” This news spread to the river Brahmaputra. Every child and senior knew about this. They would say this without fear. Satguru ji would recite Mantas and pour Ahooti. He ate less and drank less water. He controlled his mind from other thoughts. He let go of all pleasures in life. He was unaffected by hunger and thirst. He was in full control of his Indris (senses). His Tapasya got stricter by the day. He lived on top of the mountains. His focus was in the Shakti. His love was increasing for the Shakti. His breath began to live in the Dasam Duaar (the tenth door, where Amrit is stored). His focus was in the ultimate light. He was one with the power of Akaal Purakh. There was unrest in the dimensions of the Devatas. The throne of Inder began to rock because of Guru ji’s strict Tapasya. The powers of Inder and Indrani came to Guru ji and stood in front of him with their hands folded. They said to Guru ji: “it is hard to see us. We wish to serve you.” Kuber came and said to Guru ji: “Guru ji, I am the Devata of wealth. I have all the wealth including 9 Niddhis and 18 Siddhis. I can give you all of these.” The 9 Niddhis and 18 Siddhis said: “Guru ji why are you doing such a strict Tapasya? We will give you everything. Please let us serve you.” All the energies came to Guru ji and stood there. They said: “we will do what you say.” Every energy was there. Guru ji did not look towards any of them. He did not want any of them. He only wanted the Shakti of Akaal Purakh to come. His mind was still. He was like the Sumer Mountain in a storm, unmovable. He would only think of the Aad Shakti of Parmeshwar. He was meditating on her. He did not want the Shakti of Indrani. He wanted to call the Shakti who is worshipped by Shiva, Brahma, Varun, Kuber, Sun, Moon and Vishnu; the one that protects the Devatas and destroys the demons. She protects her devotees and destroys their troubles. This is the Shakti that gives Vishnu power. When Madh and Kaitubh were going to eat Brahma, this Shakti came into Vishnu to kill Madh and Kaitubh. They fought for 5000 years. In the end, Madh and Kaitubh became arrogant and gave their heads. It was this Shakti that killed Mahikhasur, Dhoomarnain, Chund, Mund; the killer of Shumb and Nishumb; she is the Kaali. She creates the world and then destroys it. The Shakti is Brahma that creates and Shiva that destroys. She nurtures the world as well. She has no beginning and no end. She is the female form of Akaal Purakh. She is the light of all lights; the origin of power. Whoever remembers her, she comes there to help them. Guru ji is meditating on her. Till he doesn’t see her, he will continue his Tapasya. He wishes to see the power of Akaal Purakh. He wants to make her appear. He wishes to see the beautiful and pure form of Akaal Purakh.
3-10 The Signs of Appearing
The Mantras were recited as the Havan continued. Guru ji’s attentions was focused on the Shakti. He did not say or listen to anything else besides the glory of Akaal Purakh. He did the Havan according to the correct traditions. He did a strict Tapasya for this. It had been nine months like this. The tenth month was upon them. He started to sit a lot now. He sat for a long period at this time. It was Phagun (February/ March) and the Havan continued with the Ahooti. Day and night, Guru ji stayed at the mountain. The food was eaten there too. Guru ji ate less and stayed awake. He only meditated on the mother of the universe. He praised the Shakti of Akaal Purakh in many ways. He recited the Braham Kavach Bani, continuously, with the Chandi Vaar and Charitar. He composed the Mohini Chand and said the thousands of names of Parmeshwar’s Shakti. He recited the Achkara Chand continuously. Guru ji composed the Bani and recited it in poetic measures. He said the names many times. He bowed to every name. The signs of Chandi began to appear. It became evident that Chandi was about to appear. The 10th month was complete and Chet (March/ April) was upon them. The gardens bloomed. It was spring and the Raag Basant was heard everywhere. The flowers bloomed with bees on top of them. Many colourful flowers were radiating. On top of the mountain, the flowers bloomed. Guru ji was sitting at Nainay da Tilla. Many trees could be seen. Chandi wanted to come in this month. Guru ji made his Tapasya stricter. Many types of dry fruits were added to the Ahooti. Saffron and other expensive things were added to the Samaghri. The great omens were seen. The fire roared from the right side. This was seen as a good omen. As Guru ji would add the Ahooti, the fire would come forth to receive the Ahooti. This was a great sign seen by Keshav Das. He had full faith now that Chandi was about to appear. When Keshav Das saw all this, he said to Guru ji: “Maharaj, it is not long now. I can see all the signs. You will be able to see her. You must be in full attention. She can appear any time now. Keep your patience. You must stay here at the Havan Kund. When the Shakti appears, fear can take over the person. You must be alert. You must fold your hands and praise her. The Shakti of the Devatas is small. The Shakti of Akaal Purakh is unlimited. When she asks you for a blessing, you should say what is in your heart. Give her a gift when she appears. Keep everything ready for her.” Guru ji was happy to hear Keshav Das. He said to him: “you are a great support for me. You are a Brahman and so you support the Kshatriyas. You are like a father to society. You are the Saraswat Brahmin. You will complete all the tasks for giving the gifts.” Keshav Das said: “you are great. You are gracious. You are doing the Havan of the Mother of the Universe, Chandi, to destroy the Mughals.”
It was the new moon of the Chet, and Guru ji did Havan for 15 hours and rested for 9 hours. He did not move for 15 hours. The Navratrays of Chet were upon them. Guru ji did not eat or drink. He only meditated on the Mother. He sat in one Aasan and recited: “Jai Devi, Jai Chand Karaali. Jai Jai Ambay Baho Bisaali. Your arms are great. On this earth, you make your praises appear. You destroy the sinners like an elephant pulls a tree. Your eyes are beautiful like a deer. The Vedas call you powerful and with weapons. You are the one that sustains the earth and blesses it. You help everyone across this ocean. You are the most beautiful. You are the feminine divine beauty. You hold the lotus flower in your hand. Your head is tilted to the side and you have beautiful jewellery. I bow to your feet. I bow to you; I bow to you. There is no one equal to you. (Guru ji now praises the destroyer form of the Shakti) I bow to the destroyer of Madh and Kaitubh. I bow to destroyer of Pingaach. I bow to the one who gave power to Ram and Krishan, the handsome one. I bow to you who helps her servants and blesses them. I bow to Durgay Bhavani. Jai jai to the one with iron eyes. You are black and without clothes. Your mouth spits fires. You have eight arms. You are fierce and have a skull garland in your neck. I have a small moon on your forehead. You created Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu. You destroy fear. Your hair is scattered. You bless everyone. You are victorious in war. How many names can I say of yours? I meditate on the Guru.” Guru ji did not have hunger or thirst. He was above the human form of an Avatar now. He composed many compositions that are in Dasam Guru Granth Sahib ji. He praised her names and thought of them. He did the Havan and recited the Mantras. He had his attention focused on Chandi.
It was the day of Ashtami, the eighth night. Earthquakes began to happen all over the world. The Sevadaars that were standing close by, Guru ji signalled them to climb down the mountain, away from here. The Sikhs and Sevadaars all left at once. Only Guru ji and Keshav Das remained. The signs were there. The earth quacked and rumbled. The mountains were shaking. Keshav Das saw this and lost his steadiness. He feared for his life. He felt danger. He began to think in his mind of how he can be safe. He said to Guru ji: “oh wise one, Chandi is about to appear. She can come any time now. When she appears in front of you with a fierce form, she will be happy with your Tapasya. She will ask for a gift. We will have to give it to her right away. Tell her what is in your heart.” All of a sudden, Keshav Das got up and ran away from the mountain. He was scared. He was afraid to see the Shakti. He climbed down the mountain as soon as he could. Guru ji was alone on the mountain now. There was no other human, bird or animal. Keshav Das had run away. Guru ji remained sitting there, reciting the Mantras. Guru ji was happy. The day of Ashtami, Guru ji stayed sitting the night. For the first time in 11 months, Guru ji was alone. For 15 km, all human and animals cleared the area as the earth was shaking and rumbling. It was clear that Chandi was about to appear. Guru ji continued into the night. He was in the same Aasan. As the sun arose, it was Sunday. The Sun looked different today. The sky made a sound as if many conches were being played. There were Jaikaras in the sky. Many thunder bolts flashed. The earth was shaking. The wind was wild. The clouds thundered. The sky cleared. All of a sudden, there was an immense illumination in the sky. Guru ji sat with patience. He continued to recite the Mantras and poured the Ahooti. Many flashes of lightening happened. The lightning struck close to Guru ji on the mountain. The thunder was loud. It would calm down for a few moments and then begin to rumble again. Many signs were shown. Guru ji was unaffected. He did not move his knees. He witnessed everything. He kept the Havan going. The Mother Earth was waiting for the Shakti of Akaal Purakh. All the Devatas had descended to the area, waiting for the Shakti to appear.
It was noon now; Guru ji was still sitting there. A great earthquake occurred. The earth was shaking.
