3-36 Hushnaak Singh/ Firangi/ Francici
As Bhai Ram Koer ji was dictating the history of Satguru ji, he said to the scribe, Bhai Sahib Singh Likhaari: “write, scribe, the way Guru ji told me the history. I heard from the mouth of the Satguru. The Katha of the Guru is great and cannot be deciphered to its fullest. Satguru ji explained his previous birth. He got up afterwards and went to his home. I got up and followed him as well. Guru ji laid down and was happy with me. He said: “Bhudda (referring to Bhai Ram Koer ji as the descendent of Baba Bhudda), you will be very old and live a long life. When your house is far, mine is near. When my house will be near, yours will be far (the house and distance is referred to as the world and Sach Khand).” Guru ji said this 3 times to me. He gave me a shield, kataar and Kard. I put his weapons to my forehead and bowed to Guru ji. I came to my home and went to sleep.
I got up at Amritvela and bathed. I then went to see Guru Gobind Singh ji in his court. The court was empty that day though. I asked: “where is Guru ji?” I was told that Guru ji went towards the Sutlej. I then headed towards the Sutlej to see Satguru ji. On the way, I saw some Singhs running. I asked: “where is Satguru ji? Why are you running? Why are you in a hurry?” They said to me: “Prabhoo ji is changed today. He was harsh to us today. He is sitting on the shores of the Sutlej and threw stones at us when we went close to him. He told us to go away.” Listening to the Singhs I still went to see Guru ji. I saw him sitting near the shore. There was 1 young Sikh named Hushnaak Singh Baanya (of Sirhind) doing Chaur over Guru ji’s head. There was no one else there. There was only the 3 of us. I bowed to Guru ji. Guru ji said to me: “not sleeping, not awake and not calling out.” The whole day was spent like this.
It was evening and time for Rehraas. Guru ji did not get up. Hushnaak Singh and I were there. Hushnaak Singh was not afraid. Guru ji calmed down in the evening and was the same as before. Hushnaak Singh noticed that Guru ji was calm and the same as he was before. Hushnaak Singh folded his hands and said: “Guru ji, please tell me, forgive me, what was this you did today? I would give my mind, body and wealth to the one who would help me meet the Guru. I have met the Guru now. I have no other wants. I am a merchant, Vanjara Sikh, I am not wise towards Saints. What was this you said about not sleeping or not awake?” Guru ji smiled and was about to speak about the past and future; how the low would become high. He spoke the two of us: “without Sidhak, the Sikh Sangat will be in doubt. The Sangat has become without contentment. They are into gathering wealth and commodities. Their devotion is less and they do not have faith in the Guru. The ones who have become atheists will be in pain. Leaving the Guru, they will not survive. They are my Sikhs and will come back into the homes of Sikhs. They have done some effort by staying with me. They will be rewarded for listening to Keertan and doing Seva. They will be kings in the future. They may be kings or officers of the king. They will be stuck in the attachment of their families. They will hold their families in higher priority and stuck in this trap like a fish caught in a net. They will be born as Sikhs but their Karma will be with them. They will be in trouble and remember my words. They will believe me then. Hushnaak Singh, I will tell you the past: when Chandi fought the Demons, it was a big war. Millions were killed and some ran away in fear. Some Danavas (demons) remained and hid. There was a person name Bhargav of the Bhrigu line. Bhargav saw the demons lose. He was their Guru. He went to protect them as he was powerful and wise. He was a great Tapasvi as well. He collected his demons and gave them hope. He said to them: “don’t be afraid or upset. I will help you to fix everything. I will do more Tapasya to get you your kingdom. You are my devotees and I am your Purohit. You will be strong in the battlefield. I can’t tolerate your pain. You will be wealthy and praiseworthy again. Just listen to me. I will get you the kingdom of the earth. the Devatas will run away.” The Demons were given hope in this way. Bhargav did strict Tapps in different ways. He did Tapasya for 3 Yugas. It was the end of Dwapur. It was almost Kaliyuga when his Tapasya was complete. He gave his earned powers to the Demons. The Demons become powerful and took the kingdom again. The Demons prospered in a place called Tehran. They took over the Dharma and Karma by Bhargav’s instructions. They began to do Yagnas by putting ghee into the Havan. They were looking for more power. The Devatas did not have anyone doing Yagnas. The Devatas were upset and there was nothing they could do. They went to Brahma and said: “we are in pain. The Demons have taken over Dharam. Our devotees do not do Jap, Tap or Karma. You are the father of creation. We bow to you, oh four-faced one. You are the provider and doer. Please protect us.” Brahma heard the Devatas and thought about it. He checked with his vision to see what happened. He saw the Tapasya that Bhargav did for the Demons. Brahma said: “you will have to do Tapasya. Do Simran of the Wise one, Vishnu. He will find a solution. Let’s go to him. I will go with you. Let’s go to Vishnu.”
Everyone went to Vishnu to ask for his help. They said: “protect us. We have come to you for your help and protection. You are the master of the world. You are the creator. The Demons have taken our kingdom. Do something that will make the Dharma far from them. When they are far from Dharma, they will lose.” In this way they all made their pleas to Prabhoo. Prabhoo heard this and said: “don’t worry, I will find a solution. The Demons will be destroyed.” The Devatas bowed to Parmeshwar and went to their homes. They thought of Prabhoo’s Maya.
Parmeshwar took an Avatar. He was beautiful and wise. The Avatar preached and said to the Demons: “the Vedas are a lie. The Mandirs are places of Thugs. You should stop doing Havans.” He was Vishnu but preached Atheism. He made the Demons stop bathing. The name of the Avatar was Arahant Avatar. He met everyone. He was radiant but spoke opposingly of the wisdom of Dharma. He spoke against Vishnu to turn the Demons away from Dharma. Everyone followed him and accepted his words as he was so wise and convincing. People did what Arahant said. The Avatar was greatly skilled in Vidya. The Demons then left their Dharma. They spoke bad about the Vedas. Simran stopped. A new religion was made that shaved their bodies. The Dharma finished and the Demons were weak. The Devatas noticed that the Demons were now weak. They waged war on the Demons and took over their kingdom. Bhargav, the one that did Tapp for the Demons, ran away from Arahant. He ran away to the kingdom of Women called “Treeya Raj.” There were less men in that kingdom. When a man would come, they would capture them and use them for their pleasure. Bhargav was captured by two of their queens. He had to stay there for hiding. The place was Kamroop. The queens were pregnant soon. Bhargav was about to leave but the queens said: “the children that will be born, how will we raise them? Tell us what to name them. What is your country? We will need to tell our kids. Bhargav then said: “I am a Rishi Eshwar (King of the Rishis) so one child will be Eesa. I have been looted, Moosya, so the other child shall be named Moosa. I will give them great power. They will both have their own religions. I am from the country of Manu. These children will have a lot of children. They will try to rule my country. At one time they will take over the country of Manu. They will rule the country for 100 years. They will return to my country to rule and to find me. Firangi – the one that comes back. They will be called Firangi and Fancicis.”
3-37 Words of the Future
“When Kaliyuga will be 5,000 years old (432,000 years in total) see this katha till then. Hushnaak Singh, listen carefully, I will tell you the future.” By this time, the Sikhs that had run away, came back seeing that Guru ji was in a better mood now. Everyone was surprised to hear about the Firangis coming to their country. The Singhs said to Guru ji: “what will happen when the Firangis come? How will your Khalsa rule? How will the Dal face them? Please tell us Guru ji.” Guru ji said: “The Moun Firangis will come (Moun meaning quiet as they did not speak the language of Hindustan) with great big armies. The Singhs will be strong too. The Firangis will wish to make the Singhs fight each other. The ones on the one side of Sutlej will be allies and the other side will be together. Sometimes the Firangis will win and sometimes the Singhs will win. Till the Singhs remain determined to their Dharma and remain independent; live by the Rehit; I will give them the glory. Once they have a lot of wealth, they will get attached to it. They will get stuck into their work and families. They will let go of their weapons and raise cows. They will take bribes. They will use the money of their daughters and sisters. They will be stuck in pleasures and go to courts for justice. They will read Vedas and Shastras while stop reading Gurbani. They will live by the way of the Brahmins. They will earn money like Brahmins. They will bring the women of the Malaich to their homes. They will go to dancer women and prostitutes. They will go to the resting places of Peers and stay away from the Guru’s home. They will not do justice like men. The Sikh women will be the servants. The queens will not be of good character.
The Firangis will first come to Ludhpur (Ludhiana- the city of the Lodhis). They will be the kings and enjoy the kingdoms. They will grow. The Firangis will take the wealth and the women. The Singhs will suffer during this time. The Singhs that will not follow the Guru’s Rehit, there will be many problems to face for them. There will be a lot of worry. They will ask the Guru to give them death.” The Singhs then asked: “Maharaj, how will the Turks lose their kingdom? They rule the world, how will their kingdom be defeated?” Satguru ji heard them and then told them the drama: “I will tell you what will happen. There was a Brahamachaari that did Tapasya for the purpose of being a king. He was reborn as Akbar. He was born as a Muslim but was accepting to all religions as he was a Sadhoo in his last birth. He also had faith in Guru Amardas ji and allotted a Jageer to Bibi Bhaani ji. He had a son named Jahangir. Shahjahan was next. Everyone has seen them. Firangis will come but be their slaves. They will remain quiet then. Nauranga was next and stopped trading with the Firangis. Nauranga is the follower of Peer Meera Shah. He received methods of Bhagti from Meera Shah but his previous demonic character remained. He knew the path to Akaal Purakh but he still forgot. He was greedy for kingdoms. He lost his Bhagti because of this. He killed his brothers for the kingdom. He killed Dara Shikoh and claimed the throne. He has been ruling for a long time. His enmity with me will get worse. He is a tyrant and oppressive. He wants to make his religion grow by force. He is able to go to Mecca everyday by his powers. He prays there everyday that his glory and kingdom grows. He wants to be praised by all. He was told by a celestial voice that he would rule all, except for the Guru’s home. He heard this in his dream. He wants to kill all the Hindus. Wherever he hears about powerful saints, he tests them. He will fight me. He does not understand the way of Hari. He wants to overpower us. The ones who will be blessed by the Guru, they will destroy the Turks. I will give my power to the Khalsa to finish the radiance of the Turks. The Turks will by the employees of the Singhs. When I leave this body, 43 years after that, the Singhs will rise from every branch. They will wage fierce wars. They will loot the enemies and kill them. They will rule Rome. Many heads will fall. In 1800 Vikram (1743 CE), the Singhs will make their regiments and Misls. They will loot Kabul and other regions. 40 years after I leave, the Pathaans from the west will come. From Kandahar, (Abdali) Pathaans will come and reek havoc on the country. The Turks will rule till 1900 Vikram (1843 CE). Their kingdom will finish then. From the west, the Firangis will come, the foot soldiers of Eesa. The Khalsa will be divided and meet the Firangis. The houses of husbands and wives will break. They will let go of their Shasters and live like Brahmins. They will eat like Brahmins. The Sikhs who won’t follow the Guru will be in pain. I was eager to form the Khalsa and created it a few years earlier. For this reason, they will have to face bad times. They won’t be finished though. They will rise again.
From Kandahar, a Pathaan (Ahmed Shah Abdali) will come with a powerful army. He will kill many Singhs. Piles of heads will gather. He will be strong and go till Delhi and Mathura. He will kill many in Mathura. He will strike fear in the whole country. Nobody will be able to face him. He will travel with his power.”
The Singhs folded their hands and said: “how will the Khalsa survive? There will be so many enemies. If they will find Singhs and kill them, how will they survive? You said this Panth will last forever. How will they survive?” Guru ji gave them hope: “Bhagavan Krishan ji, the Avatar of Dwapur, fought 24 wars with Jarasandh. Jarasandh called his friend Kaal Jamun from Haphus Valait. His army was strong. His people were Hubsis and had big lips with big nostrils. Kaal Jamun challenged Krishan ji on the battlefield: “fight me! I will loot Mathura and your kingdom.” When he fought Krishan ji, Krishan ji ran away, seeing Kaal Juman’s body as impure. He ran to a cave where Rishi Machkanda, the son of Manadhata was sleeping. He wanted to sleep and got a boon from his father that: “whoever wakes him up, will explode.” He got this boon after fighting for the Devatas. Krishan ji kicked Machkanda in the chest to wake him up and hid before he opened his eyes. When Machkanda opened his eyes, Kaal Jamun had reached and was seen by Machkanda. Kaal Jamun exploded instantly. He still wanted to take over Mathura and so he was born as Ahmed Shah Abdali. Ahmed Shah will kill Nadir Shah and come to Punjab. He will fulfill his wish by looting Punjab and Mathura. He will be strong. When he fights my home, then he will die. Guru Arjan Dev ji had said the words that Harmandhir Sahib will be destroyed and then remade. The Pathaan will destroy the Harmandhir Sahib and the Khalsa will remake it. By destroying the Harmandhir Sahib, he will commit a grave sin which will be the cause of his death. Kaal Purakh has made the Khalsa very strong. The Khalsa will kick the Pathaan out, never to return. The Khalsa will rule Punjab. Many brave warriors will gather in the Panth.” Guru ji told the Singhs the future. There are great rewards in listening and reading to this.
Guru ji then came back home. He went inside the home, just as a lion enters his cave. He slept the night. The Sangat heard all these words and were amazed.
3-38 The Plasterer Sikh gets Slapped
Guru ji got up at Amritvela and took a bath. Guru ji sat in his Samadhi and then got dressed in his royal clothes. He wore his jewellery with diamonds and pearls. Guru ji tied a white Dastaar and wore a white chola. He had a white hazooria. His Kachera was white. He came into the court of Singhs like this. He looked like the full moon. He was all white. His gems were white too.
The back wall was being washed with mud to fill up the holes. A Sikh named Kaan Singh was the plasterer working on the wall. Guru ji came to the court and observed Kaan Singh working. There were only a few other Singhs with Guru ji as he sat on his throne. Kaan Singh was very careful doing his work but got scared that Guru ji had already arrived. He started to work faster to finish faster. As he was wiping the wall, a splash of mud landed on Guru ji’s chola. Guru ji saw the mud and said: “get up and slap that plasterer Sikh.” As everyone heard Guru ji, all the Singhs got up and slapped Kaan Singh. Some slapped him and some punched him. Kaan Singh lost his consciousness. Guru ji thought to himself: “his fault was really small but all of the Singhs punished him harshly.” Guru ji said to the Singhs: “you are the Sikh Sangat who obey the Guru. Why did you all go and slap the Sikh? I want you to think about one thing: he was a Singh of the Guru as well, who was doing the Seva of the Guru. I asked for one slap and all of you went. Your biggest mistake was that you slapped him on his beard. The beard is the stamp of the Guru. The hair is the Bana, the uniform, of the Guru. By doing this, you are guilty in the eyes of the Guru. Understand this: touching a Sikh’s Dastaar and Kesh is a grave sin. That person becomes an enemy of the Guru. You have done a big mistake today. You tried to be true to yourselves by listening to my command. I told you to get up and slap him once. You could have slapped him on his back too. You didn’t listen to me correctly. If the first person had already slapped him, why did all of you go? You were being obedient in your eyes. What command were you following? How guilty was he that you punished him so harshly? He is your Sikh brother who was doing Seva. You weren’t compassionate towards him. You were unjust to him. Now listen to my second command: I want someone to marry their daughter to this Sikh.” Everyone went quiet listening to Guru ji’s command. Guru ji said: “all of my words are equal. A Sikh listens to all of the Guru’s commands, not only the convenient ones. Think about this in your mind: you are all “Sikhs of convenience.” Sikhi is too far for you. You wear the Bana of the Guru to look good.”
A Sikh from Kandahar named Ajab Singh was there. He brought his daughter forward and presented her in front of Guru ji. He said to Guru ji: “here you go Prabhoo. Please marry my daughter to Kaan Singh.” Guru ji responded: “you’ve made me happy! You are blessed! You passed my test. You kept the true Sikhi.” Kaan Singh got up and said to Guru ji: “I cannot marry this girl. She is like my sister as she is the daughter of another Sikh.” The young girl spoke up: “it is Guru ji’s command that we are to get married. My father has brought me to Guru ji. I will stay here now and not marry anyone else. I will marry who Guru ji says to. I will do Seva here and make my life a success.”
Guru ji then said in the court: “I will tell you about a caste named Kanaits. When Kaliyuga was 2,000 years old, there was a King named Nand Raja. Raja Nand was greedy and egotistical. He was of the Naaee, barber, caste. He shaved the hair of the Brahmins, fearing the power of the Brahmins that dwelled in their unshorn hair. He became the king and took the money from the people. He took land and wealth from the people. After some time, Nand Raja died and many kings came and went. Then a king named Baalik Chand ruled, but had no money. The people were poor. The Shahukaars had no money either. People began to marry their daughters off for a price. The soldiers of Baalik Chand could not marry as they had no money. They went to the king as said: “many of us soldiers cannot get married. There will be no next generation if no one gets married. The parents of the girls want money. We have no money. You pay us less which is only enough to eat food.” Baalik Chand heard this and was upset. The Vedas and Shastras considers taking the money of the daughter as a sin. He thought hard and said: “if you wish to marry a girl, just take the girl and keep them with you. We need the next generation. Live in peace with them and have many children.” The soldiers heard this and then picked up the girls from people’s houses. Society became a mess. The soldiers picked up any girl they wanted and had children with them. When the girls became pregnant, the people of the kingdom came to the Raja and said: “our daughters are pregnant without wedlock. We are insulted.” Baalik Chand heard the people and thought hard. This situation arose because Dharma was not followed. Nand Chand did not follow Dharam and looted his own people. The soldiers did not follow Dharma and didn’t get married. Baalik Chand said: “the girls that the soldiers took, leave them. They should be married to them.” Baalik Chand made one girl marry many men at the same time as there was a shortage of girls. Sometimes five brothers were married to one woman. The world adopted this new lifestyle and let go of the old traditions. Dharma was forgotten. Many children were born. These people were called Kanaits. Listen Kaan Singh, what shall we say about this? Your relation is happening due to Karma. Relations are hard to find. This Sikh’s daughter is standing here. Marry her. Don’t reject this proposal. You will have 5 sons and your family will grow. Listen to my words and be happy.” Kaan Singh folded his hands and obeyed. Kaan Singh was from Malva.
After his Anand Karaj, he brought his new bride to his home. After some years, he had a total of five sons who were leading Sikhs of the Sangat. They were great Singhs who followed and preached Sikhi. Kavi Santokh Singh ji says: “this Katha was recited by Bhai Ram Koer ji: “I heard this Katha from Sujaan Singh of Lahore. He saw this event taking place in front of him. Sahib Singh, write this Katha. This is the Katha of the Satguru. It will increase the faith of the devoted Sikhs. Kaan Singh Laipani, the plasterer, one of his sons was Bisakha Singh. He knows the history of his father of how he got married in Guru ji’s court. Bisakha Singh heard this from his parents and tells the Khalsa as well.” I am writing this Katha. Whoever listens to this will receive Gurmat. A person’s wishes will be fulfilled by listening to this Katha. That person will become a Gurmukh.
3-39 Mata Gujri ji was told the Katha of the Devi
In this way, Satguru ji’s Katha were heard by the Sikhs and were in amazement. Some Sikhs passed the expectations of Guru ji. Some turned their backs on Guru ji.
From the time the Chandi appeared, Guru ji’s radiance was full of valour. His personality was changed as well. His words were filled with the warrior-spirit. Everyone noticed this. He was going to bring a big change to society. He was going to change the way of the country that had been around for hundreds of years. Guru ji would always keep weapons with him. For most of the time, Guru ji would be connected to the form of Akaal Purakh which was full of power. Sometimes Guru ji would speak. Whatever would come out of his mouth, would come out to be true immediately. Everyone was afraid of Guru ji as he was omniscient and knew what everyone was thinking.
Mata Gujri ji was getting worried seeing her son’s personality. She wanted to say something but didn’t. She came to Guru ji many times and would sit beside him. She would see him in deep thought and want to say something but Guru ji’s radiance would discourage her. She didn’t know if he was paying attention to her. Guru ji would not look towards her, knowing that she wanted to talk to him. Guru ji didn’t want to tell his mother what was going to happen in the future. There will be a time where his mother won’t be listening to him. One day, Mataji decided to talk to her son. She came close to him when he was alone. There were no other Sikhs with him. She blessed her son and said to him: “son, I get worried seeing your ways. I love you very much but I’ve noticed that from a few months, you are totally without attachment to anyone. You don’t seem to have any love for any family member. Your father left us when you were young. When I think of him, it pains me. He was omnipotent and had patience like the earth. He didn’t show his powers but would think about giving his head day and night. I came to you seeing you alone. I know you are an Avatar, your father told me about you. You are still my son though. You are omnipotent. Your words can make the mountains move and stop the things that move. I don’t know what will happen in the future. My attachment does not go away and I think of you constantly. The family and enemies raise many doubts about you. They say that you have begun to worship the Chandi. They also say that you have gone into the Sun (nothingness) Samadhi. They feel that you are changed after making the Chandi appear. Some are saying that the Chandi never appeared and that’s why Guru Gobind Singh ji doesn’t talk to anyone out of depression. Some say Pandit Keshav Das made a great effort after and didn’t talk to you after the Chandi came. Some say he ran away because Chandi was not going to appear. (Keshav Das ran away because he was certain that Chandi was going to appear the following day and would ask for a sacrifice) Many people say many things. Please tell me the truth. I am your mother. Parents are Gurus. You can tell me anything. Tell me what happened, as it happened, so I can be calm.”
Guru ji heard his mother’s words and got up. He grabbed his mother’s arm and said: “let’s go somewhere where no one can hear us.” Guru ji and Mata ji walked outside and sat on a rock without any rug or carpet. He said to his mother: “Mata ji, listen. It is a deep secret that is not meant for everyone. Talking about the powers of Akaal Purakh, Devatas and saints is not a good thing. Since it is your order, I will tell you. The Devi appeared in front of me and gave me the boons I asked for. Pandit Keshav Das had a great part in this. I want to destroy the Mughals as soon as possible. I did the Yagna at Naina Devi for a whole year. Keshav Das was there. There were guards around the mountain who didn’t let anyone else come up. I saw the cave and sat there on a Thursday, the first day of the lunar month. I did the Aradhana of the Power of Akaal Purakh. I first sat for 15 hours a day for a few days. Then I sat for 36 hours. I focused my attention into the Shakti of Akaal Purakh and become one with it. I was unaware of day and night once my Dyaan was fixed into the form of Akaal Purakh. There was only one desire in my mind, to see the Shakti of Akaal Purakh. I chanted “un un mun mun gun gun run run.” I chanted the Achkara Chand the whole time. Keshav Das did the chanting as well. He told me to keep the gift ready. I asked him: “what is the gift? You are my support. You are the Saarsut Brahmin who support the Kshatriyas.” Pandit ji said: “you are the warrior Guru. You took on the effort of making the Chandi appear in Kaliyuga. I say this for your benefit: chant the Mantra, day and night. Keep your body clean. Stay away from desire. Don’t speak and listen to anyone. Devi will be happy.” Guru Nanak Dev ji was happy and the Chandi appeared. When she appeared, I promised to sacrifice my body and everything I own, including my family. I ate less during that time. I ate sesame seeds with ghee. I opened my eyes after 5 months. In my dream, the Devi came to me and told me to keep doing the Havan. In the six month, my sleeping and awake state became one. (The sleeping state gives one power to create anything inside your mind. When both states become one, one can make things appear while being awake). In the eleventh month, it was the 9th day, Sunday, 4 pm; Keshav Das knew that the Chandi was about to appear. He told me this. He knew that I had to present a gift for her. A sacrifice. He got scared and so he ran away. That night, the mountains began to flash with light. There was so much light that it was brighter than the sun. All of a sudden, the face of the Devi appeared which was full of light. I closed my eyes and stood up. Seeing her form, love came into my heart. My eyes were filled with tears. Seeing the form of Akaal Purakh, I was filled with so much love that I could not speak. She laughed and spoke with a roar: “I grant you the Panth with the unshorn hair. The Panth will be the most powerful to ever walk this earth. You will be the Guru of the ones with the unshorn hair.” She praised the Khalsa Panth and me. She said that she will always be with the Khalsa. She will be in the Gatra of the Khalsa. She promised that she will come when I call for her. She said to me: “you closed your eyes so I will live in your eyes. I will disappear now because of this, but will reside in the Panth. 40 years after you, the radiance of the Turks will be gone. Your wishes will be fulfilled. The Khalsa will rule. They will be kings. Take this Kard and Khanda. Make Pahul with this to make the Khalsa. Your power will make the Khalsa brave. Give me my offering now. Give me my gift.” I took the Khanda and tagged my finger with it. I gave the Chandi drops of my blood. She took my blood and absorbed it into herself. Her servant, Lankereeya was with her. He gave me a Kachera and told me to give it to the Khalsa. He was very flexible and fast. That was because of the Kachera. He said: “I will come when you call me as well. The Khalsa will be brave warriors.” The Chandi disappeared with Lankereeya and her other servants. I am telling you what happened that day. From that day onwards, I have no attachment to the world. I don’t have any attachments to anyone. Don’t ask me anything else, Mata ji. Chandi told me not to tell anyone (it was the sacrifice of the family, wealth and Guru ji’s beloved Singhs around him that would be the Devi’s offerings. This sacrifice would give the Khalsa the energy and radiance for generations to come).”
Nobody knows the Maya (power) of the Guru. The Guru was into his own focus from that point on. The conflict with the Pahari Rajas grew. The Singhs fought the Paharis. Guru ji continued: “after a few days, Keshav Das came back to me after collecting his swollen pride. I said to him: “it was because of you that the Devi appeared. I’ve gotten the boon that I wanted. My efforts are a success. I will give you 125,000 Rajitpuns.” I hugged him after and said: “I will take you to Sach Khand after.” After hearing this Keshav Das said: “I wish to stay at your feet.” Keshav Das didn’t say more. Mata ji, I have told you how it all happened. Don’t doubt anything. Khalsa will be powerful.” Mata Gujri ji was calm now and went back to her home.
One day, there was a Sodhi that was sitting with Guru ji. He asked Guru ji: “what happened with Keshav Das? He left here and we didn’t see him again. Did you give him his donation? He was quite wise. You made great efforts.” Guru ji then said: “Keshav has been born again. He will be my Singh now (Shaheed Baba Gurbaksh Singh). He will then be born again as Ran Singh, the great Maharaj (Ranjit Singh). This will be his 3rd birth where he will be the king. He will fight many enemies and rule with pride. Lahore will be his capitol. He will win many lands. He will receive Mukti after leaving his body and come to me. The Singhs will eventually become egotistical and lose their kingdom.”
3-40 Langri Tarkaari
Sri Satguru ji was sitting in his court. Some of the Singhs stood up and said to Guru ji: “oh protector of the poor, oh gracious one, the Langri is very harsh. He always fights with everyone. He gives less rotis and subzis. If we ask for more, he fights with us. He doesn’t say much but when he does, it’s always very harsh words.” Satguru ji smiled and said: “the Langri is greedy. He is not satiated. If he was satiated, we went satiate the hunger of others. He eats the money of the Guru’s home. It has made him greedy. He was a Masand in his last birth. He loved to see the money come. Eat the Degh of the Guru. The Langar is of Vahiguru. The Langar should be distributed, thinking it belongs to Vahiguru. There is a lot of pleasure in the Langar Degh. The Gursikh who has taken the Pahul, he must eat Langar, otherwise he is not a Sikh. Listen, Sikh brothers, keep strict in the Rehit. Prepare Langar according to the Rehit. The Sikhs who have taken the Pahul should prepare the Langar. Ask other Sikhs to eat Langar with love. Make food yourself and feed other Sikhs. You will be in joy and not face any troubles in the future. The Khalsa is independent of all the Varna and Ashram (caste and life stages of the Vedic traditions) rules. Love is the highest in the Guru’s Panth. Do Ardaas and then distribute Langar and Karah Prashaad. Say “Tva Prashaad (your Prashaad)” before you eat. Wash the hands of the Sikhs who finish eating Langar. Say the Shabads of gratitude after eating. Do Ardaas. Be aware of your Shaster and your horse. Be aware of the Turks as well. Be separate from the Pahari Rajas. Don’t trust them. Don’t be friends with them. The Khalsa will be big and have a lot of expenses but the Guru will give everything. The 4 Varans (Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras) and the 4 Ashrams (Brahamachaari, Ghristi, Baanprast and Sanyasis) are dependent of the Khalsa. The Khalsa is the supreme, the highest. They will be in the Panth as well, living according to the Shabad. Do the Seva of other Sikhs. If someone comes to eat, do not make them get up. If a person is greedy after eating to a full stomach and looks upon the house of another Sikh with bad intentions, that Sikh will go to Hell. I will not protect that Sikh. Do not talk bad about the Langar. Feed a hungry Sikh with respect. To feed a hungry person provides the reward of 100 Yagnas. Feed a Gursikh with love. Do matchmaking for other Sikhs and have them married. For the benefit of other Sikhs, don’t cause delay. That Sikh will be saved. Teach other Sikhs Vidya. Give clothes to Sikhs who don’t have clothes such as the Sanyasi Sikhs. If a Sikh’s task is stuck, help them. That person will not be visited by the Jumms.”
One day Guru ji was sitting in the Divaan. The Sikhs were sitting all around him. The Bilawal Chownki (after Asa Di Vaar) was in progress. The Raagis did Keertan with love. They were on key and on Taal (beat). Bhai Sudhoo and Bhai Bhudhoo were doing Keertan. Their voices were sweet and they sung Bilawal with love. Everyone was delighted to listen to them. Keertan put everyone in a state of stillness and love. The Sangat said “vaaho, (wow). The Shabad was sung great today. The Raagis were great. They gave us bliss today.” Guru ji said in a loud voice: “bhai kahi, lupai kahi.” The Singhs asked Guru ji: “Guru ji, what does that mean? We didn’t understand this. What are you thinking?” Guru ji then said: “I will tell you Katha of a Chaudhary from a village. The Chaudhary went to his fields. He was watering his fields through the irrigation channels. He lost his hoe, as it was stollen. The Chaudhary thought to himself: “if my hoe can be stollen, how can the other things in the village be safe?” He called for a heralder and told him to make an announcement about my lost hoe in the village. The heralder made the announcements: “the Chaudhary lost his hoe. Return it.” The hoe was not returned. They then checked people’s houses. One person said: “we checked every house except for the heralder’s. Look in his home as well.” Everyone agreed and went to the heralder’s home and checked. When they checked his home, the hoe was hidden in his backyard. The Chaudhary was very angry. He said: “you made announcements but you had it yourself.” The heralder was punished accordingly. This is the same situation with our Raagis. They sang the Gurbani in Raags in the same way as the heralder. Listen Sikhs, without doing Simran and efforts, you will not be saved. The Pandits, Raagis, Kathavachaks, and Jyotishis come to inspire and motivate everyone. They give the wisdom but they don’t use it on themselves. The one who asks for directions will get his/her answers and reach where they want to but the person telling them, stays there. This is a phrase known to all but only some understand it. The one who understands Gurbani, they will be blessed and save themselves. One can’t cross an ocean by words. It must be crossed by swimming across it. Till peace is not reached and the desires are not extinguished, everything is useless. Whom the Guru meets, only they are saved. For that, you need good karma. With good karma, the Guru’s wisdom is received.” In this way, Guru ji gave wisdom to his Sikhs. Whoever understood Guru ji’s words, was saved and came out of the cycle of birth and death.
There was a time when there was a drought. Because of low supplies and higher demands, food became expensive. People could not afford roti. Famine spread. Thousands of people came to Anandpur for food. Langar and Degh was distributed all day long. Guru ji’s blessings were spread. Day and night the poor stayed in the tents. They ate when the Langar was made. Everyone was surprised to see the generosity of Guru ji. They were amazed to see how the Guru was feeding everyone. Guru Gobind Singh ji’s praises spread everywhere. Praise is achieved by giving donations, not by saving and collecting money. The Pahari Rajas found out about this and were amazed. They couldn’t feed anyone despite being kings. They were jealous of Guru ji: “how is the Guru giving so much donations despite being a Fakir?”
Mata Gujri ji was amazed at seeing thousands of people in Anandpur for food. Mata ji thought to herself: “if so many people come, the food will finish. The treasury will be depleted in a few days. Thousands come everyday. Who knows how long the drought will be. The treasury will be finished. The Degh is distributed. It should be controlled.” It was the Masands that were filling her ears with this. The Masands told Mataji to tell the Langris: “make Langar once a day and distribute less. Where will more food come from? We can buy more but if there is no food, how will we get more?” In this way, Mataji heard this and came in doubt. Mataji went to the Langris and said to the Langris: “make Langar once a day and give everyone less Langar. There is a drought so food is in low supplies. There is no food in the whole country. Be cautious.” The Langris obeyed Mata ji and Langar was made once a day. The Singhs came to Guru ji and told him what Mataji had ordered: “Mataji has told the Langris to be frugal. We need more food as we practise Shaster Vidya. Many people have come. This is difficult. Mataji has ordered to cook Langar only once a day and only 2 Rotis are given to everyone.” Sri Prabhoo ji heard this and got angry. He said: “oh Ujri (referring to his mother as the one who is going to destroy), if there is an abundance in the home, one shouldn’t’ save. This is the will of Kartar. There is no way out of it. The person who is a warrior and generous should be in charge of the Langer. Khatris, women, poor, cowards, liars, children, new workers and the impatient people are never responsible. I have seen this today. They put obstacles in good tasks and cause for embarrassment. This good task (sarcasm) was inspired by the Khatris, Masands and the new cowardly Sikhs. They gave bad teachings to Mataji. It is not her fault. Only some Sikhs will understand the wisdom of the Guru. Only some people will understand what is in my heart. Karan was the brother of the Pandavs, but his mother broke her silence after he was killed. She then told the Pandavs: “he is your brother so do his prayers.” Kunti had a boon to call any Devata and get a child from them. She called Surya and had Karan from him. Yudhistra said to his mother: “you have done a sin, mother. Who will be blamed for his death? Tell me! You should have told us that he is our older brother. Why would we have killed him then? We would have made him the king. Go away from our sight right now.” Yudhistra cursed her in anger: “women will never be able to keep secrets from this day forward.” Where there are two ideologies between wife and husband, that house will not stay together. Duryodhana’s son was killed by Duryodhana’s command. Kaikai’s command was obeyed and Dashrath died. There is trouble in the home. There should always be a compromise between the two.” Guru ji spoke in anger: “the Paharis call themselves Khatris. The Khalsa will kill them. There will be war. They will be looted and feel scared. My Sikhs will be in pain and live in the jungles. The Turks will tear their skins. I will bring such a time on them to make cowards into warriors and warriors into cowards. The Paharis will be destroyed. I will take away the royalty of the kings. The men will serve the women. The women will be bad-natured and love other men besides their husbands. The Sikhs will give their women to the children of Eesa. The Dharma will be desecrated and dignity will be destroyed. There will be drama in the homes. 40 years after I leave, this will all happen.” In this way Guru ji was angry and spoke these words. Mata ji and the Sikhs were scared to hear this. Everyone said: “Vahiguru, Gur Vahiguru,” over and over again. Mata Gujri ji was upset and began to shed tears. She said: “forgive me, forgive me. Everyone is forgetful. Keep me with you. Make sure Kaliyuga doesn’t get fiercer.” The Sikhs folded their hands and said: “Prabhoo, this will be tribulation. We only look for your support. You have cursed us but we are yours.” The Sikhs and Mataji were trembling in fear. Guru ji looked at everyone and said: “oh mother, because of you being so upset, I will change the time period. This will happen 140 years after I leave. I have increased this by 100 years (the time when Maharaj Ranjit Singh died).” To forgive the Sikhs and Mataji, Guru ji said while being happy: “if you live in the faith of Prabhoo and run the Langar, the curse will not affect you. Jabai Langar atka, tabay sraap satka- when the Langar stops, then the curse will come.” Guru ji was happy then and sat down. The form of Hari, Guru ji, sat in peace.
