3-31 Nand Chand runs away taking Guru Granth Sahib ji
Listen to what happened to Divaan Nand Chand, the Masand who was a great warrior. He was the grandson of Umar Shah. He fought in the battle of Bhangaani. This is how he died: Guru ji saved some of the Masands, such as Nand Chand, but his fate came in his way. There was an Udaasi Saint who had scribed a Saroop of Guru Granth Sahib ji. When he finished writing, he brought the Saroop of Guru Granth Sahib ji to Anandpur Sahib. He wanted Guru Gobind Singh ji to approve and sign the Saroop. He wanted to meet Guru Gobind Singh ji as well as have him sign the Saroop. He first met Divaan Nand Chand when he came to Anandpur and told him his situation: “I have written a Saroop of Guru Granth Sahib ji and want Guru Gobind Singh ji to sign them. I cannot ask him to do such a thing but since you are close to Guru ji, please ask Guru ji to do this for me.” Nand Chand asked to see the Saroop. He saw the beautiful writing and was amazed. He wanted to keep the Saroop for himself. He said to the Sadhoo: “stay in the city without any worries. When Guru ji has time, I will request him and get it signed. It will take some time but I will get your task done.” The Udaasi Sadhoo heard this and gave Nand Chand the Saroop of Guru Granth Sahib ji. He thought the signature would be done. He came everyday for a whole month to remind Nand Chand. Nand Chand would make an excuse: “there is a lot of work for me to do so I didn’t get to your work. Be patient, I will get your work done. As soon as Guru ji is gracious, I will ask him. Wait about 2 or 4 more days. The leader of the Sodhis will sign the Saroop.” The Sadhoo went back to his camp. He waited about 10 or 15 more days and inquired again. Nand Chand made some other excuses again. After 6 months of not getting a signature the Sadhoo thought to himself: “this should have been done by now. He didn’t get the signature.” Nand Chand didn’t want to give the Saroop. He thought to himself: “I will not give him the Saroop back. The writing is beautiful and cannot be written again.”
One day, the Sadhoo went to Divaan Nand Chand and spoke to him harshly about the situation. Nand Chand responded: “write another Saroop. I will pay you for it. I won’t give you this one. I will get Guru ji to sign the other one. I will keep this one. You can write nice, write another Saroop. If you don’t listen to me, I will have you kicked out of this city. Otherwise I will pay you.” The Sadhoo was poor. He was angry but couldn’t do anything. One day, Guru Gobind Singh ji went hunting. The Sadhoo saw an opportunity and yelled out to Guru ji. Guru ji asked a Sikh to find out why there was a Sadhoo calling out for him. The Sikh inquired and the Sadhoo told him the whole story. The Sikh came back to Guru ji and said: “Nand Chand has taken a Saroop that this Sadhoo has scribed. Nand Chand is scaring the Sadhoo now.” Guru ji sent a Sikh and said: “go with the Sadhoo and have Nand Chand give him back the Saroop.” The Sevadaar went to Nand Chand with the Sadhoo. He said to him: “it is Guru ji’s order that you return the Saroop to the Sadhoo.” Nand Chand heard this and said: “I wasn’t going to keep it. I wanted to give it back to him. Go back and tell Guru ji that I gave the Saroop to the Sadhoo.” The Sevadaar left but the Sadhoo stayed. Nand Chand changed his face and said to the Sadhoo: “why are you wandering around? I’ll give you the Saroop in the morning.” Nand Chand made another excuse.
The next day, the Sadhoo came to Nand Chand to ask for the Saroop. Nand Chand said: “if you want to be safe, leave here at once. If you tell Guru ji, I will put you in jail. You will be in pain then.” Nand Chand pushed the Sadhoo and threatened him. He swore at the Sadhoos and his companions and kicked them out his home. The Sadhoo and his followers were upset. They were afraid that Nand Chand was a warrior, and would kill them. They hid in Anandpur for another month. They wanted to tell Guru ji some how. They approached Guru ji and said: “Nand Chand did not obey your orders. He made an excuse and didn’t give us the Saroop of Guru Granth Sahib ji. Prabhoo ji, please help us and get the Saroop for us. He swears at us and wants to kill us. He has kept the Saroop in his home.” Guru ji heard their words and noticed that Nand Chand didn’t listen to him. He came into Bir Rass and sent 2 Singhs. He said: “tell Nand Chand: is your end time near? You are being oppressive. You kept something that wasn’t yours. You didn’t listen to me. Your bad days are here. The greatness that other Masands got, you wish for that greatness. If he doesn’t listen this time, loot the fool’s home.” Guru ji gave his orders and went hunting. Guru ji hunted the wild boar.
The Singhs went to Nand Chand with the Udaasi Saints. They said to Nand Chand: “Prabhoo ji asks why you didn’t listen to Guru ji and give the Sadhoos the Saroop back. Do you wish yourself well? Do you want to share the fate of the other Masands? You were kept under Guru ji’s protection, otherwise you would have been looted. Return the Saroop if you want to be well. Why are you ruining your life for no reason?” Nand Chand responded with ego: “I will not give the Granth! I have the ability to make the next Guru. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji’s family is big. I can go and sit with anyone one of them and praise them. The Sangat will gather there and worship that person. I can get him gifts and money.” When the Singhs heard this, they said: “looks like what happened to the other Masands, will happen to you. Wait till Guru ji comes back. You didn’t listen to Guru ji. You think you can make the Guru.” The Singhs left but Nand Chand got scared: “If the Sikhs tell Guru ji, I will be punished.” Nand Chand saddled his horse and raw away. He took his servants and placed Guru Granth Sahib ji on top of the head of one of his servants. He took some of his warriors with him. As Guru ji returned, Nand Chand had already crossed the Sutlej and went to Kartarpur Sahib.
When Guru ji returned from the hunt. He heard what had happened. He found out that Nand Chand ran away. Guru ji said: “Nand Chand ran away because of fear. He knows what happened to the other Masands. He did a wrong thing. He will face death wherever he goes now. He can’t run away. Nobody shall read that Saroop of Guru Granth Sahib ji. That Saroop will be in Drolly.” In this way, Guru ji cursed him and said: “loot his home.”
Listen to what happened to Nand Chand. When he went to Kartarpur, Dheermal was seated there. Nand Chand sent a servant to Dheermal. The servant went to Dheermal and gave Nand Chand’s arrogant message: “I will make you the Guru and bring you a lot of money. Sikhs from every direction will come to you. If I shake my clothes, I can make anything into a Guru that comes out.” It was night so Nand Chand stayed the night. The Masands of Dheermal got worried. They discussed with Dheermal: “this Nand Chand is a great warrior and is very smart. Don’t keep him here. He will kill you. Otherwise, have him killed tonight or in the morning. Your enemy is Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji. He is close to him. This may be a plan by the Guru to send him here. They may want to kill you. He wants to take Kartarpur from you. He may want to see your secrets. He is a great warrior. No one can face him. If you want to be safe, have him killed tonight. He came to you.” Dheermal said: “how can we kill such a brave warrior? He is many weapons. He will kill many before he dies.” The Masands said: “we will kill him in a way that he doesn’t find out. When he comes to see you in the morning, we will have a marksman hide in the corner. We will tell the marksman to shoot Nand Chand in the heart. Nand Chand will die right away.” They hatched a plan.
The next day, Nand Chand came to Dheermal and stood in front of him. The marksman saw him and pulled the trigger. The bullet hit Nand Chand in the thigh and broke his leg. Nand Chand looked around and took his sword out. “Who shot me?” Dheermal and the Masands ran out and closed the doors. Nand Chand looked around but couldn’t find a way out. Nobody came to Nand Chand. Dheermal tried to figure out how to kill him. They made a hole in the ceiling and saw the anger-filled Nand Chand standing like a warrior with a sword. It was like a lion in a cage. Dheermal’s people fired a bullet from the ceiling and killed Nand Chand. Nand Chand’s companions pulled out Nand Chand’s body and rode off right away. They went to a village called Kalai Sangha and cremated him. In this way, he lost his Dharma and died. He died an outcast. He died an excommunicated Sikh.
3-32 Bhai Gurdas Masand/ Bajroor is Punished
Many Masands were punished. Some were killed because of their own sins, some were beaten. Some paid their dues and were released. Some ran away like thieves, never to show their faces again. The ones that became humble and asked for forgiveness, they were released. They did Seva with devotion from that point on. Guru ji took all of the responsibilities from the Masands and gave the Singhs the authorities. The Singhs wore weapons, blue cholas, blue Dumaalaas and unshorn hair. They read Gurbani all day and were ready for war. They were referred to as “Bhujhangis.” They went to different cities and gave the Sikhs Amrit. They would capture the Masands and bring them to Anandpur. Some were jailed and some were hung. The Sangat from far away lands came to see Guru ji. They came with a minimum of 5 weapons as per the command of Guru Gobind Singh ji. They came and presented their Dasvands themselves. Previously they would have given it to the Masands. This process was changed. They would collect their Dasvands in their homes and waited till they visited Guru ji. They presented their Dasvands. The Sangat that followed the Masands, they went straight to Guru ji as well and brought their Dasvands. This was the new and amazing Panth. They wore blue, their language was different and they ate out of iron bowls. They would shout out “Akaal” all the time.
One day, Guru ji was sitting in a high place and could see far into the distance. He saw some people arriving on horses. As they came close, the people change their direction towards the Sutlej. Guru ji was watching them carefully. Guru ji sent a Sikh to inquire as to who they were. He wondered why they were leaving and wanted them to come and eat Langar. The Singh went and asked the people who they were. The people spoke a lie and said: “we are the Brars.” The Singh came back and told Guru ji. Guru ji sent two other Singhs and said: “tell them to come and see me. Find out who they really are. They are lying. They are not the Brars.” The two Singhs went back and surrounded the people. They said to them: “Guru ji is calling you.” The people were brought to Guru ji. They came off their horses and placed their money in front of Guru ji. They bowed to his feet. Guru ji said: “oh of Behlo, how have you come? You are Gurdas from the family of Bhai Behlo (the one who made bricks for the Kar of Amritsar during Guru Arjan Dev ji’s time. This is the same Bhai Gurdas who was with Baba Ram Rai and came to call Guru Gobind Singh ji to avenge Baba Ram Rai’s death). Why did you lie?” Bhai Gurdas then spoke the truth: “I was afraid of you and Mata Punjab Kaur. When you killed the Masands in Dehradun, I stayed with Mata Punjab Kaur and supported her. After you left, the other Masands of Baba Ram Rai become my enemies. They were upset because I called you and had the other Masands killed. They tried to convince Mata Punjab Kaur that I wanted to kill her. Mata didn’t listen to them first but now she is upset with me for the past few months. The Masands wanted to kill me but Mata Punjab Kaur protected me. I figured out one night that I was about to get murdered. I left the same night. I left 5 Rajitpuns at Mata Punjab Kaur’s door and left after bowing to her. She was asleep when I left. I decided to come to you for protection. As I left Dehradun, I heard of the news that you were punishing all the Masands. That is why I turned away. First, I stayed with Baba Ram Rai as I was commanded by Guru Har Rai ji to go with him. I obeyed and stayed with him but now I came to Anandpur. I too have made mistakes towards you when you were young. When you made the fort at Paonta Sahib, Baba Ram Rai was afraid that you would take over his establishment. When we all talked, I spoke ill of you, saying that my brother Tara Chand could face you in war. I said my brother will kill you with his arrows. You spoke of this during your ferry-ride with Baba Ram Rai. Thinking of all my mistakes, I was afraid of you. I was going to leave without meeting you. Instead, you are great. You called me yourself and met me. Prabhoo, I was afraid from both sides.” Guru ji smiled and said: “your grandfather was a great Sikh. He was given the title of “Bhai,” brother, from Guru ji. You and your family are the servants of the Guru’s home.” Guru ji kept Bhai Gurdas with him and assigned a salary of 2 Rajitpuns a day.
The next day, Sangat came and bowed to Guru ji. They made a request to Guru ji: “Guru ji, there is a village named Bajroor across the Sutlej. They have hatred towards you. We had children, women and seniors with us. We are from Doaba and we were doing Keertan as we travelled. We had many gifts and money for you. The Rangars of Bajroor looted all the horses, pashmina clothes and money from us. They looted us and beat us up. We asked them not to take the gifts for the Guru but they didn’t listen to us.” Guru ji heard this and became very angry. It was certain that the death of the villagers was upon them. After about 3 days, Guru ji commanded to go for a hunt. The Ranjit Nagara sounded and the horses were saddled. The mounted army and the soldiers all rode out. Guru ji fastened his sword and tied his kumerkassa. He took his gun as well. He headed towards Bajroor with the Singhs. They crossed the Sutlej and hunted the deer and boar in the area. They all soon reached Bajroor, where the Rangars lived. The Singhs saw the Rangars and attacked them by shouting Akaal. There were Rangars and Gujjars in that village. They saw Guru Gobind Singh ji and took out their canons and guns. They fired straight at the Singhs. They fought with the Singhs from their high places. There was a small fort in their village. Many entered the fort and fought from there. A fierce battle started there. They used fist-full of gunpowder and fired their guns. The bullets would rip the body and the blood would begin to pour out. They fired another bullet as soon as the first was fired. The injured warriors would fall down. Some left their bodies. Some fired arrows. The Singhs surrounded the village and fought with force. They fired their guns and killed many. The ones on foot came close and fought fiercely. Guru ji looked on as the battle raged on. The Singhs charged into the village and shot the Rangars and Gujjars on their balconies. The Rangars and Gujjars fought back. They hid behind their walls as the fired. As soon as the Singhs would see a body part come into view, the Singhs would fire right away. Their heads would explode like clay pots. The Singhs were great marksmen. The people in the villages were killed by bullets. Some ran away to escape death. Some went into their small fort. They couldn’t face the Singhs. The Singhs came close to the fort and surrounded it. The battle went on for an hour and a half. The Singh destroyed the enemy, the blood was flowing. Many bodies laid dead on the floor. The true Guru saw the battle of the Singhs and said: “this was a fierce slap on the enemy’s face.” The Singhs went right up to the fort to fight. There was a shower of bullets. The enemy got scared and dropped their weapons. Kalgidhar ji then took his horse and said in a loud voice: “take out your swords and enter the fort. Kill the enemy and cut them to pieces. Make sure they are not able to fight again.” The Singhs heard Guru ji and attacked the fort. They set up ladders and yelled out “kill them.” They came to the big door of the fort and charged inwards. The Rangars lost their courage. They knew that if the Singhs came into the fort, they were as good as dead. The cowards were scared and decided not fight. They saw the charge and said: “we don’t want to fight. Please forgive us. We are your slaves now.” The guns stopped firing. The Singhs told everyone to come out of the fort. Their weapons were taken from them. The Rangars came out with their hands up. They said: “please forgive us.” Guru ji sat under a tree and said: “destroy this fort. They are arrogant because of this fort. They kept fighting because of this fort.” The Singhs made the Rangars destroy their own fort by their own hands. The fort was totalled into flat land. They were punished. They were looted as they had looted the Sangat. Guru ji asked them: “why did you loot my Sangat? We have avenged them. You have accepted defeat and so we will let you go. If you do such a mistake again, you will be punished by death.” Guru ji made them scared and destroyed their forts and homes. In this way Bajroor was destroyed. Only the ones who came with humility were saved. Many Singhs were martyred as well. Guru ji had them cremated. The injured were taken back to Anandpur. Thousands of Rangars and Gujjars were killed. The Ranjit Nagara sounded and the army came back to Anandpur, victorious.
3-33 Hola/ The seniors of Hindus and Muslims
After punishing Bajroor, Guru ji and the Singhs came back victorious, playing the Nagara as they rode into Anandpur. The news spread about the battle of Bajroor. Guru ji punished the people that bothered the Sangat. The people of Bajroor were arrogant and the strong fort was won. It was known that no one could face the Khalsa. Whoever fought, lost. Whoever came for protection, they were saved. The Panth was getting bigger by the day. People around Anandpur were now afraid of the Singhs. They stopped looting poor people. Seeing the fierce battle of the Khalsa, nobody wanted to face them. People would say: “the Singhs attack like lions. Since the Fort of Bajroor was destroyed, the Rangars are all scared. If the Sangat passes at night, they are no longer looted by the Rangars. Doesn’t matter when the Sangat passes. Guru ji first punished Aalsoon and then Noon village. Now Bajroor was punished. The Sangat that comes, if someone tries to loot them, the Rangars are now scared. They would have to give instead of taking now. They would die and their houses would be ruined if they fought the Khalsa. Guru Gobind Singh ji is courageous and strong. Nobody could face him.” In this way the Rangars talked. They were scared to loot the Sikhs now. The thieves, dacoits and bad people were arrested and punished. The bad people saw Guru ji’s radiance and were scared. All of the thieves were quiet and calm now. The travellers of that area were in peace now. The householder people were free to visit their relatives freely now. They would give blessings to Kalgidhar ji: “may he rule for 20 eras to come.” The Pahari area was all afraid of Guru ji. Nobody extended their hand of tyranny. It was as if Guru ji laid the foundation of Dharam. His glory was spreading like a beautiful garden. Guru ji would not let any injustice happen to anyone.
Sangat from far away would come, bringing great gifts for Guru ji. They would keep their hair and wear Kacheras. The young people would stay with Guru ji then. They would take Amrit and join the army. Whoever came to see Guru ji, Guru ji would tell people to be connected to the Dharam: “keep your hair, wear Kacheras and keep Shasters. Punish the sinners. If you have weapons, nobody will bother you. The Shasters have a great radiance. People see the Shasters and bow to you.”
The Masands no longer took money from the Sangat. The Sikhs brought money to Guru ji now. Guru ji started the new tradition which spread far and wide. Many months passed like this. It was Phagun (February/March) and people came to celebrate Hola. The wise, Gyanis and Dhyanis came to meet Guru ji. There was a great celebration there, with a lot of Keertan and poetry. There was wrestling Akharas and horse jumping. The Singhs would show off their skills. Guru ji watched the different arts. He was appreciative of the arts and gave the artists a lot of money. Actors came to put on shows and acrobats came to put on their acts. The Sangat made a plea to Guru ji: “this time, Hola is really crowded. There were two lady Sikhs who left with someone. We don’t know who they left with.” Guru ji heard this and said: “the melas are made for a reason. Some come for benefits and meet the saints to do Simran and listen to Keertan. Some come for Seva and bathe at the Teerath. People come for these reasons here. People’s characters are tested here. The faithful ones come and have their sins washed away. The bad people come here and do bad things. Some people have bad characters. Some do good and some do bad. Oh Gursikhs, listen to my words: the Bani says:
Sri Mukhvaak:
If we are not to live here forever, then why does one adhere to ego?
(SGGS 473)
If we are going to die one day, why be egotistical?
The ones who are connected to the Prabhoo, they don’t like anything in the world. The Guru’s court is a mirror. You will see your true face. The court is pure. People get what they are destined to. The Guru’s court will show what type of person you are. The mirror is not happy or sad to show the truth. The Guru is not happy or sad to give out Karma rewards. If one does Seva, they are rewarded. Understand this: the Hindus have lost their way. They do not follow the old Dharma no longer. They do not wield weapons. They are stuck in desires. The Peers of the Turks gave the Muslims the right path. When their special days come, the Muslims remember them and cry (the Shias celebrated Moharram). The Muslims remember the saints’ good deeds. They cry and beat themselves because they do not measure up to their elders. They are stuck in actions. They hit themselves and say: “we ask for forgiveness Khuddah. We cannot live up to your rules.” When the Hindus celebrate Diwali and Hola, they do bad things. They gamble and drink alcohol instead of doing Bhagti. They are shameless. They all dance together on holy days. Listen Sikhs, I will tell you the truth: the ones who do Bhagti of Parmatma, they are happy in this world and in the next. They win this world and do not come back here again. The ones who do not do Bhagti, they are bound like thieves. They are bound by their religious rules like animals are tied all day. They are in pain, dying and being born again. Without good deeds, there is nothing. Bhagti will go along with you when you die. People who wear religious clothes and gave the wisdom, without karma, they will be in pain. They laugh and dance as a show. Parmeshwar is not happy with that person. Many die and then regret being stuck in desires their whole life. When death comes to them, then they know what they did wrong. Ram Chander ji and Krishan ji will only hold the hand of the person who walks the life of Dharma. The Pooja of the Dharma will be successful if the person follows their Guru. For this reason, do Simran of Satnam. The saints do this all the time. The outward life is necessary but inside, one should be connected to Satnam. See the Parmeshwar as your only friend. Whatever Parmeshwar does, be happy with it. Stay in Akaal Purakh’s will and be in joy. Don’t see yourself as the body. The mind will be still in Satnam. Prabhoo will help them. The sins of many births will be washed away with Simran. The person sees his/her own Aatma.”
3-34 Prashaad of Morsels/ Punishment for reading incorrect Bani
One day, as Guru ji was sitting in his Divaan, a Sikh stood up and said what was in his heart” oh true King, oh complete Guru, I have a request. I get up during late hours of the night, bathe and recite Sukhmani Sahib. I complete Sukhmani Sahib before the Keertan begins. I complete the Bani and then listen to the Keertan. Today, I had one Ashtpadi of Sukhmani Sahib remaining when the Keertanis arrived with their instruments. I said to the Raagis: “I am almost done the recitation of Sukhmani Sahib, let me finish and then you can begin Keertan.” The Raagis did not listen to me and began to play their instruments and sing the Raag. They started the Keertan. I then said to them: “I will tell Guru ji and have a Tankhaa (a form of service) assigned to you.” Guru ji, please give me justice.” Guru ji smiled and said: “Bhai Sikh, listen to me, don’t see the Raagis as guilty. The singing of Gurbani in Keertan, the ones who talk when Keertan is happening, that person is guilty. You were giving the Sangat morsels to chew on which satisfies only a few people. The Raagis give Prashaad to everyone, which satiates many people. The Guru is happy with this, as Keertan is the vessel of Naam in Kaliyuga. The one who sings Shabad Keertan with the devotion and faith in the Guru, that person is close to the Guru. That person is connected to the Guru and lives in joy. The ones who let go of their vices and sing the Shabad, their bonds are broken by the blessing of the Guru. The ones who listen to Keertan with love, they do not come back to this world. That person achieves the still status and live in joy. One should concentrate on the meanings of the Shabad in Keertan. One should believe the Guru’s word to be true. The ones who do Keertan and then translates the Shabad, that person gives the Sangat gourmet fried food, pakvaan. These pakvaans are sweet and delicious. The speaker and the listener both receive Mukti. They become one with the Guru in the end. This is the glory of the Shabad Keertan. Oh wise Sikhs, keep your eye on the goal. The Sangat will undoubtedly be blessed who come to the Guru’s sanctuary. They will receive the joy of the world and the path to Mukti.” The ocean of compassion, Guru Gobind Singh ji, then went quiet. The Sikhs heard the glory of the Shabad Keertan. Everyone was in bliss after looking at Guru ji. They all bowed to Guru ji’s lotus feet.
One day, Guru ji was sitting in his court like the King of the Devatas, Inder. Satguru ji was sitting casually. One Sikh was reciting the Bani of Dakhni Oankaar. The Sikh mis-spoke a line in the Bani which changed the meaning of the Bani. It was because he didn’t understand the translations. When Guru ji heard the Sikh, he spoke up: “what is this Sikh doing? Punish him. Take him and punish him. Take him away from me!” There was a Sikh with a stick in his hand who went to the Sikh who mis-spoke Gurbani and hit him with the stick. He took the Sikh to another place, away from Guru ji. The Sangat was surprised to see this occurrence. Some thought: “what did Guru ji do?” Some Sikhs came to Guru ji and said with their hands folded: “Guru ji, true king, Sachay Paatshaah, why did you have the Sikh punished? That Sikh was reciting Gurbani. His mind was focused in Bani. You have said that “a person who recites Gurbani, even one line of Gurbani, that person is blessed in this world.” That Sikh was reciting Dakhni Oankaar and you had him punished with a stick. We are shocked to see this. If reading Bani has you beaten up, what will happen in the afterlife?” Guru ji smiled and said: “listen Sikhs, the Sikh that was reciting Bani, he mis-spoke one of the lines in the Bani. He changed the meaning of the line. Call that Sikh back to me. I want you all to listen to what the Sikh says.” The Sikh was called back and Guru ji asked him to recite the line again. The Sikh read the line in the same way as before. The way he said it, the meaning was not correct. Guru ji then said: “I will tell you how to say it correctly:
whatever the Karta does, the Karta Purakh knows and also the Guru knows as well.
(SGGS 930)
The gory of Akaal Purakh is great. Only Akaal Purakh knows his own glory. If the Guru warrior is wise, the Guru also knows the glory of Akaal Purakh. The other people of the world listen to the Guru and know of the glory of Akaal Purakh. If the Satguru didn’t know the glory of Akaal Purakh, then there would be darkness in the world. This Sikh sounded the wrong vowel which turned the meaning into saying: “what does the Satguru know of the glory of Akaal Purakh?” This Sikh did not understand or think about the meaning of the Shabad before reciting it. He changed the meaning. If people hear this and believe it, then why would people come to the Guru? If the Guru does not know Akaal Purakh, then why would anyone come to the Guru? Listen Sikhs, I will give you wisdom: recite Bani with accuracy. There are great rewards to reciting Gurbani with accuracy. That person will be in joy in this world and in the next world. If you read the Gurbani wrong, then try to fix it and re-read it with accuracy. You fix broken things in your home. If you don’t fix your mistakes, you are without devotion.”
Many fly in the sky, many live in the water and many live without knowledge and in their waywardness burn themselves to death..19..89..
(DGGS 20)
Guru ji recited a line from Akaal Ustat Bani.
Guru ji continued: “I will tell you about the 5 types of Sikhi. Dhanday ki, Dekha Dekhi, Hirsi, Sidhki and Bhaav ki. The first is Dhanday ki – if one’s brother becomes a Sikh, everyone will one “a person without a Guru.” One becomes a Sikh to fit in. Dekha Dekhi – when someone sees another people becoming a Sikh who becomes prosperous (children, wealth, reputation and milk come after becoming a Sikh) and joyful; greed enters the person’s mind and becomes a Sikh. This is Dekha Dekhi Sikhi, which was attached to greed. That person does not understand the word of the Satguru. They did not think of the form of the Guru. The third, Hirsi- many people are doing one thing, so one decides to do the same thing without thinking about what they are doing. That person does not learn Gurmat nor do they sit in Sangat. They do not understand the glory of the Pahul. The fourth Sikhi is Sidhki – A Sikh does not believe in anyone else besides the Guru. The Sikh lives and dies by the Guru’s sanctuary. They do not leave the Guru, like people attached to the rescue boat during a flood. They will follow Sikhi even if their head falls. They see their body as false, along with the world. Sikhi reveals the truth, so one should adhere to Sikhi till they die. They will be able to tolerate many problems and troubles. They should never leave their determination. That person is my complete Sikh who does not sell his/her Sikhi for his/her head. The fifth Sikhi is Bhaavna- this person comes to the Guru’s sanctuary when they see the Guru’s glory. Day and night, that person focuses on the form of the Guru in his/her heart. The person has deep faith and devotion in Sikhi.” Guru ji stated the five types of Sikhi based on one’s actions. They are rewarded according to their actions. “I will be with my Sikhs in this world and in the next. I will save them from the pains of the Jumms.” The complete Satguru fulfills the Sikh’s wishes. Do the Simran of the name of Satguru Nanak Dev ji, day and night. Love the true name, Satnam; discard your desires, anger, and ego. Keep a steadfast faith in the Satguru. Santokh Singh, be still and keep contentment in your heart.
3-35 Pahul/ Dusht Daman
Guru ji explained the five types of Sikhi. Guru ji had given the Sikhs the Pahul. The Sidhki Sikhs folded their hands and bowed. They asked Guru ji: “Guru ji, the Sangat that listened to your words, they have some questions for you. We want to hear from you. Please tell us about Amrit, the Pahul. The Tapasya that you did and gave the Amrit.” Guru ji understood the Sangat’s plea and started to explain the Pahul: “there are three things for spiritual tasks: Manta, Tantra and Jantra. These three things need to come together to complete a spiritual task. Satnam is the supreme Mantra. There is nothing compared to it. Vahiguru is the Jantra which is a collection of all the Yugas. For 1 Kalapa (4 Yugas, 4.3 million Years) Guru Nanak Dev ji did Simran of Vasudev; For 1 Kalapa, Hari, Gobind and Ram, each. The power of all the Yugas were collected to make Vahiguru. Vasudev – one who resides everywhere; Hari – one who takes in all our vices and makes us green; Gobind – the master of the universe and senses; Ram- one who is manifested in everything. The Tantra is the iron Khanda and Vessel with water and sweet pataasay. All of these items were brought by the powers of the universe, the Devatas. Listen to the powers that brought the items: Varun Dev (water) participated with the water (Bhai Chaupa Singh brought the water from the Sutlej); Inder Devata was responsible for the sweets (the water evaporates and rains down without the saltiness of the ocean); Yamraj brought the iron; all of the Devatas participated in the Amrit Sanchaar. Water is the symbol of peace. The sweet was for the purpose to extinguish the desires. Once a person has dessert, one does not to eat anything else. The Khanda was the symbol of warriorism. The Sikh would be courageous and fight in the battlefield. Guru Nanak Dev ji gave Charan Pahul which started the tradition of Seva with love. Now the Guru’s wish is to fight battles, for this reason, the Khanda was used to make the Pahul. The Devi, Bhagwati, the power of Akaal Purakh was meditated upon while reciting the 10 Svaiyas. This will give the Sikhs the Nirvana of Love. The Anand Bani was read for peace and awareness. Japji Sahib was recited for Mukti. The Pahul will give the four gifts of life (Dharam, Arth, Kaam and Moksha). The person’s body would be blessed. Only the fortunate ones will get the Pahul. The Devatas did not receive it. If one leaves the way of the Khalsa after taking the Pahul, there is no bigger sin. Mata Gujri ji asked me about my previous birth. I told her about it.”
The Sikhs then asked: “oh treasure of virtues, the Pahul has the power of the Guru. Is it the power of the Guru or is it the power of Chandika?” Sri Satguru ji heard this and smiled. He then spoke to the Sikhs: “this was a secret that you should have left alone. It would have been better if you didn’t ask. You have faith and therefore a Satguru must answer your question. The Guru only answers the questions of the beloved Sikhs. Listen my Sikhs: there is only One in the Guru’s house. The Guru and Chandika are the same. Do not doubt this. Do not forget this. In my first Avatar, I did a very long Tapasya. I loved to do Tapasya. I did the Tapasya at Bindhyachal. Listen to how I did the Tapasya. For 1 Manvantara (311,448,000 years) Parbati did Tapasya at that time. The demons were strong and gained the control of the world. They gained control of Inder’s dimension as well. Inder and the Devatas went to Brahma to ask for help: “the demons have thrown us out. We have been defeated in battle and we now come to you for help.” Brahma said: “kingdoms have to be won. There is only one way, The Aad Shakti form of Chandika has to be called upon. She will give you your kingdom back. She is strong. She is the power and energy that created the creation. You will have to impress her.” Hearing Brahma, the Devatas rejoiced and started their effort. They did the Aradhana (Bhagti/thinking of) of Chandi. She appeared before them and the Devatas paid their respects to her with their hands folded. Chandika saw the state the Devatas were in and had pity on them. She said: “my sons, I will get you your kingdom back.” She called for her lion and sat on its back. She wielded weapons in her eight hands (the eight arms represent the eight directions. The Power has command over every direction).
The battlefield was set and a fierce battle began. Dhoomarnain, Chund and Mund came and were killed by Chandi. Rakatbheej came next with a Khanda. As his blood fell on the earth, many more demons appeared from it. Chandi killed the new demons but they kept multiplying. For many years this battle raged on. The time could not be accounted for. 90,000,000 demons were formed. There were clones of Rakatbheej everywhere. The Rishis made an estimate of how many there were. They were born from his blood. The earth had rivers of blood flowing instead of water. The earth stopped in fear, watching the battle. The earth was like a stone in the water. The servants of Chandi ran away. Some were killed in battle and some ran away. Chandi disappeared into her form and came to Bindhyachal Mountain. She became an idol and began to do Tapasya. The demons started to find her. Where Chandi had formed into an idol, there lived a Tapasvi with many Sikhs. Two demons named Bail and Subail came looking for the Devi, the power of Akaal Purakh. The demons were very angry. The name of the Tapasvi was Samundh Rishi. The demons were screaming and yelling. They came to the Rishi and said: “where is the Devi? Tell us where is she?” The demons addressed her in a very disrespectful way. The Tapasvi spoke in anger: “why are you speaking nonsense? The power of Akaal Purakh resides in all. She is the mother of creation.” The demons said to themselves: “let’s kill this Rishi as well.” Rishi Samundh thought to himself: “what shall I do now? The dharma that I and my Sikhs follow is not of warriors. We are the meditators of Brahm. We think of Brahm all the time.” Rishi Samundh took the lion skin that he meditated upon and waived it using his full force. From the power of the skin came a radiant warrior. The warrior was strong and courageous. He folded his hands and said: “father, what are my orders?” Rishi Samundh said: “fight these demons and the others that are taking over the earth. Take an army of lions that also came out of the lion rug and fight. Come back to me after.” The warrior bowed and went to battle with an army of lions. He fought for 1,005,000 years. He was Dusht Daman. Chandi was watching with her divine vision. She got angry seeing the battle of Dusht Daman. She re-appeared and began to fight the demons again. Dusht Daman and Mother Chandika defeated the demons. She went to Dusht Daman and said: “oh Tapp of the Tapasvi, you have helped me fight this battle. You completed my task for me. There will be a time in Kaliyuga when these demons will come back and oppress the saints. I will come and help you in your battle. I am happy with your effort. I will come when you call me. You will be “Dusht Daman,” the killer of sinners. You will be the Guru of the world and everyone will follow you. You will give my form to your Sikhs.” Dusht Daman ji said: “my Sikhs will be called Singhs. They will have unshorn hair and will be without the Janyow. It will be the most beautiful Panth in the world. Please give them the sharp sword. They should have the weapons, Bhugti and Mukti. They will recite Gurbani. They will rule the earth after killing the sinners.” The Devi heard this and said: “all of your wishes will be fulfilled. All of your tasks will be complete. In the first portion of Kaliyuga, Shivji will come as Shankaracharya (around 1000 C.E. who wrote many translations of the Vedas) who will preach the wisdom of the Vedas. The ignorance of the demons will be wiped away with the re-discovered movement of preaching the wisdom of the Vedas. An Avatar will come in the Sooraj Bans, Guru Nanak Dev ji, who will be the master of the universe from the micro life forms to the outermost dimensions. After many years, you will come as an Avatar. Call me at that time. I will illuminate and appear with your words. I will live in your words. My colour is dark. Give your Sikhs the blue colour to wear. Do not have attachment with your sons.” The Devi mother hugged Dusht Daman just as a mother hugs her son. She gave Dusht Daman a Kard, string to tie hair and a bracelet. The army of the lions that were born were ordered to do Tapasya on the mountain by Chandi: “they will be born as the Khalsa. They will be strong but at one time they will get caught in the ego of the kingdom. Their bodies will be tortured. I will test them by giving them pain.” After saying this, Chandi disappeared. Dusht Daman ji came to Rishi Samundh ji. He said to him: “I’ve been blessed by the Mother.” Rishi ji said: “I will be your father in Kaliyuga but I will only see you for a little time. The blessings you got from Chandi will help you. At this time, do Tapasya along the shores of Godavari and collect more powers. You were formed from my Tapasya. Your name will be Gobind. The Chandi has called you Singh so you will be Gobind Singh.”
Dusht Daman ji bowed to his father and began his Tapasya. His Tapasya was so deep that he become one with the supreme form of Akaal Purakh. The Samadhi was so deep that all of the Devatas were surprised to see it. The universe bowed to the state of the Samadhi. Many Yugas passed. Powers appeared inside Dusht Daman. The power that came out of the Samadhi, became Mata Gujri ji. The father was Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji. When the Samadhi stayed for many years, Akaal Purakh ordered Dusht Daman to be born in the home of Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji. That is who I am. I am Dusht Daman. My father was Rishi Samundh who was Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji. I did not want to tell you this but this is how I became Gobind Singh. The lions that did Tapasya, became the Khalsa, the Sangat you see before you. The power of Chandi was to be with the Panth that I was to form. She is in the form of the Shaster that the Khalsa carries. The Tapasya of the Satguru gathered in one place. The two powers are the same. The power of the Tapasya of Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji and Chandi Mata are one in the same. Chandi and Guru Nanak Dev ji are the same power.” In this way Guru Gobind Singh ji told the Sikhs about the secret of the Pahul.
