3-1 Manglacharan/ The Test of the Brahmins
Ik Oankaar Satgur Prasaad
Sri Vahiguru ji ki Fateh
I (Kavi Santokh Singh ji) bow to the power of Akaal Purakh, Devi Sharda, Sarasvati, whose colour is like the cloud, on a winter’s day. She is white, like Naarad (Naarad is white because of his Bhagti that makes him illuminate) and mercury. Sarasvati is the Goddess of speech, the power of speech, the energy of speech. I bow to Sri Nanak, Angad, Amar, Ramdas, Arjan, Hargobind, Har Rai, Har Krishan, Tegh Bahadhur, Dasam Guru. I remember their feet and begin the Third Rut. In this Rut, the Tenth Guru shall make the Devi appear.
Guru Gobind Singh ji would think of many ways to find the Pandit that can make the Devi Chandi appear. He called many Pandits from around the great Teeraths of the country. He also wanted to test the Brahmins of how they were doing with their spirituality. He sent invitations saying: “whoever comes to our Yagna, they will get a lot of money.” The news spread throughout the land that Guru ji was going to do a great Yagna and was going to give a lot of money to the Brahmins. The Brahmins who were experts in the Vedas, 6 Vedangs, Shrutis and had the knowledge of the Mantras; knew how to impress the Devatas; knew the correct method and traditions of Havan; knew the correct way to do Pooja, were all called to Anandpur. The invitations were sent to the villages and centres of the country. Everyone from far and wide were called to Anandpur. The Brahmins gathered and travelled in groups. From the East: Kanshi, Mathura, Prayagraj, Ayodhya and Delhi, the Brahmins came. Scholars from Kashmir, Multan and Lahore all came. They came from other places as well. They were great scholars of the Vedas and Puranas. They came with joy. The Pandits had knowledge of many types of Gyaan. Guru ji valued these people well and gave them a lot of money. Countless Brahmins gathered in Anandpur. Guru ji arranged for tents and houses for them to rest. They were given rice, ghee, sugar and other foods to eat. They ate Langar and visited Guru ji. Some were well educated, some were not; all met together. Guru ji welcomed them all and began to test them. He wanted to see how moral were the leaders and scholars of the Dharma. Guru ji told the senior Sikhs like Divaan ji and Purohit ji to make delicacies and tasty gourmet food. Everyone got busy cooking the great food. Day and night they made food. It was for thousands of people. Sweets were prepared, salty dishes and sour dishes in many ways. They were all prepared and kept in pantries. Kheer was made with ladoos and jaleebis. Many types of sweet breads, kachoris with masalas; vada yoghurt with coriander, cumin and spices. The cooks prepared with love and care, putting ghee in everything. Hundreds of people were making the food. Karah Prashaad was prepared with dry fruits and nuts. When the food was ready, Guru ji called all the Brahmins.
The Mevra announced to everyone that the food was ready: “it is Guru Gobind Singh ji’s command that all Brahmins listen carefully: whoever eats Kheer and sweets (vegetarian), they will receive 5 Rajitpuns. Whoever eats the meat, they will get 5 golden coins.” The Mevra repeated the announcement many types. Greed destroyed the logic of most of the Brahmins. They became tempted to eat the meat, letting go of their own Dharma. They wanted the golden coins. Only a few came to the Pangat with the vegetarian food. They kept true to their own traditions. They considered the after-life and did not give in to temptation. Around 95% went towards the meat food. On one side was the sweets, the other side was meat. Everyone was given a lot to eat. They all ate as much as they wanted. They washed their hands after. The Sikhs told Guru ji of what happened. They told him that the meat Pangat was huge. “Everyone has eaten. They are now waiting for donations,” said the Sikhs to Guru ji. Guru ji got up and first went to the meat Pangats. He went to see the people who were not supposed to eat meat as per their traditions and ate meat for greed. Guru ji scolded them in anger: “you are not true Brahmins. You have lost your Dharam for greed. You are spoiled and spoil others. You should be punished. If you are punished, everyone would say that we invited you here and then disrespected you. For this reason, you are forgiven. Did you not think of the after-life?” Guru ji told Purohit ji to give the Brahmins 5 Rajitpuns so they don’t go back home empty-handed.
Guru ji then went to the vegetarian Pangat. They were few in numbers. Guru ji said: “you are great. You are content. You kept your Dharam. Only Dharma goes with you to the court of Akaal Purakh.” They were given 5 Dinars. Guru ji handed out the golden coins himself. He also told these people not to go anywhere. He wanted to serve these people. The meat-eaters were sent home. They were laughed at and regretted what they did. The ones that did not go against their Dharam, they were very happy. They got money and they were successful in the afterlife. When news of this test spread, the people hated upon the people who ate meat. Out of the good Brahmins, Guru ji kept the best of them and spent time with them. He gave them good food and more money. They lived in Anandpur with bliss and sang the glories of Guru ji. They knew that Guru ji was all-powerful.
One day, Guru ji called all the Brahmins to him. He had them sit down with great respect with him. They all bowed and sat down. The Brahmins said: “Guru ji, may you live forever and your praises be sung forever. May your kingdom and glory be as much as the 8 Dijpals (Devatas of Directions). May you live as long as the Ganga and Jamuna flow.” Everyone was happy with Guru ji. Guru ji said to them: “you are all scholars. I wish to worship the Mother of the universe, Sri Chandika Kaali, the power of Akaal Purakh, the energy of war. Just as the Vedas say, the mantras and traditions, I would like to know how to make her appear.” The scholar Brahmins out of the group all discussed and then spoke to Guru ji: “Guru ji, Mantra to completing tasks is known to many; they can do these many times. Guru ji, you know this more than us. But the Shakti that you wish to make appear, only comes in invisible form that completes our tasks. To see Chandi appear right in front of your eyes, this is very difficult. In any Yuga, Devatas would not appear easily. In Kaliyuga, it is impossible to have the Devi appear. You are all-powerful, omnipotent and omniscient; you can only do this. You are the Avatar of Akaal Purakh. Only you can do this. You can do the impossible. There is a Brahmin in Kanshi who knows the correct traditions of Pooja and Mantra Jaap. He is spiritual and does not meet anyone. His name is Keshodas and there is no other like him. If he comes, he will take a lot of money. He can do the correct traditions but we don’t know if he would be successful. If you wish to have the Devi appear, you may call him. You are complete, Guru ji. There is no other Raja or Pandit that can make the Devi appear. In Kaliyuga, Rajas and Pandits can’t even say her name. Saying her name would mean rivers of blood.” Sri Kalgidhar ji heard the Brahmins and was happy. Chandi was already inside him, but he wanted to show the world the appearance of Chandi.
Prabhoo ji got up from the meeting and went to his home. The Sikhs, Pandit and Sevadaars went back to their homes as well.
3-2 The Sangat Wishes for a Mela/ Holla
Many months passed since Guru ji tested the Brahmins. He wanted the power of Akaal Purakh, Chandi, to appear so he can create the new Panth. It was the month of Phagun. Everyone celebrated the season. The Raagis would sing Raag Basant in Guru ji’s court. The wise ones would sing other Raags as well. Anandpur Sahib was in bliss as the Sikhs and Keertanis would sing Gurbani and bow to Guru ji. The Holla Mela had come. Sangat came from every direction and from every caste. They came to meet Guru ji. From the East, the Sangat from Jaganath and other islands came. From South, the Sangat from Dwarka came in great numbers. Balak Bukhara had Sangat which came from the West. From the North, Jammu and Kashmir, Kamow and Himachal Pradesh, the Sangat came. It is difficult to name all the cities from where they came from. The glory of Guru Gobind Singh ji had increased many folds. Sikhi increased by 10 times around the world. Hindus and Muslims became Sikhs. They would come to Anandpur to see Guru ji. The people looking for the truth came from far. They brought the best gifts for Guru ji. They came on the day of Holi and set up camp in Anandpur.
Guru ji had invited everyone for Holi. There was Shabad Keertan on Holi. It was raining Amrit and the celebration was great. There was a lot of Langar. The Rababs, Sirandas, Taus, Mridangs sounded. The Sitar with 4 taars, Dutaar and Sirandas sounded and matched the Taal to give everyone bliss. The place where Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji’s head was cremated, many Sangat would come to bow there. That place is called Sis Ganj Sahib. The Keertan took place there. The Raagis sang Raag Nat, Sarang and Malhaar. They sang Jaitsri, Sri Raag with the Taal Dhamaar. Gauri, Maajh, Bipaas, Bahaar, Soohi, Sorath, Devghandari, Asa, Ramkali, Bairaar, Lalit, Bilawal, Jaijaivanti, Gujri, Kimaach, Dhanvanti, Deepak, Bhairon, Shub Hindol were sung. Parj, Tilang was sung. Malkons, Kalyaan and Kedara; Gaund, Tukhari, Megh for the benefit of everyone. Maalsri, Basant, Bihaagh and Sughrai were sung with love. Many Raags were sung on this day. The wise ones were in bliss as they heard and sung these Raags. Many Divans were in progress as there was a lot of Sangat. The sounds of the Mridangs echoed. People wished to see Guru ji and set up camp. There was a great crowd and the happiness was clearly seen. The Sangat met each other with joy and touched each other’s feet by saying “Pairee Pauna ji.” They saw each other as family, even though they lived in different countries. They would enjoy each other’s company. Everyone would wait for Guru ji to come outside and hold court. The Sikhs would read Gurbani and some would do Katha of Gurbani’s meanings. Some would listen to Gurbani and change their life according to the teachings of Gurbani. Some would do Simran of Satnam. Some Sikhs would have constructive discussions. Some would ask other Sikhs to explain meanings of Bani. Some would enjoy the pleasure of Gurbani. There was a lot of love in the Sangat. There was a lot of Langar. The Sikhs would prepare a lot of Karah Prashaad. The Prashaad was made and the Sikhs would do Ardaas. They would all stand and fold their hands. They would then distribute the Prashaad among everyone.
In some of the Divans, the Katha of the Puranas would happen. The Bhatts would sing the Kathas of warriors from Markandey Puraan and Mahabharat. The Kavis would compose poems and say them out loud to the Sangat. They would receive wealth and money for all this. Guru ji would give all the artists a lot of money. Blacksmiths would gather and receive money for these skills. Guru ji loved all types of skills, done with focus and skill. The Shiklighars made many types of weapons: Spears, swords, arrows and guns. Guru ji paid them to make the best weapons. The many types of skilled people would come to make Guru ji happy. The cooks would cook, the singers would sing; Guru ji would be happy and give them money. People would hear about Guru ji from far: “skills are only appreciated in Anandpur.” They would come and become rich.
People would play Holi and enjoy themselves. They would throw colour on each other and celebrate. Gulaal, the red powder with scents, was thrown on each other. Rose essence was sprinkled on everyone. Red and yellow powder was thrown with joy. Many other colours were thrown on white clothes. People had Gulaal on their faces. You could not tell who the person was. They were coloured in the Guru’s love and enjoying themselves. Their inside colours and outside colours were the same. They would sing Gurbani Shabads as they celebrated. Holi was played on the roads of Anandpur. The ground was red with the Gulaal. It looked like red clouds everywhere. There was red liquid sprayed on friends. Some would say, “please put colour on me.” In this way, the Sangat celebrated Holi.
Guru ji would come to meet the Sangat in his court. He commanded from his mouth: “lay the floors on the place where the high Damdama is. Put up tents there. Make preparations with the best Gulaal and perfumes. Take it to Keshgarh. Tell the Sangat to come to Keshgarh for Holla.” The Mevras went to the Sangat to tell them. The preparations were made after hearing Guru ji’s command. The Sikhs heard the command and went to the high place. The Sikhs played Holi there. The Sangat heard the news and everyone came to play Holi with joy. They brought their gifts and the stuff to play Holi. Guru ji wore a white chola, white Dastaar and a white kumerkassa. He had a golden Kalgi, pearl necklace and a sword with a golden hilt. Guru ji came to the place in a royal white chola. The Bhatts and the Naqeebs announced Guru ji’s arrival. The Sikhs waived the Chaurs over Guru ji’s head. Was it ever the most royal regalia. Whoever saw him was memorized by his radiance. Guru ji walked slowly and met everyone along the way. The Sangat showered flowers on him and placed garlands of flowers on Guru ji. Guru ji climbed the steps of Keshgarh. Guru ji’s throne was golden, upon which, Guru ji sat on. The Chaurs were waived behind Guru ji. The Sikhs and Masands came and sat all around Guru ji. The Sangat began to come in great numbers. They saw Guru ji and were in joy. They presented their gifts and bowed with their hands folded. The Sikhs threw Gulaal with rose essence on top of Guru ji. The whole place began to smell great. The Sikhs played Holi with each other as well. The celebration and joy of this court was not describable. There was so much joy. Everyone’s wishes were fulfilled. The Sangat met Guru ji, the one with the moon-like face. It was as though thousands of chakors were looking towards the moon. His beauty would mesmerize everyone who saw him. Only the fool was not attracted. The love in the Sikhs’ hearts grew. Guru ji let everyone meet him with great traditions.
Guru ji then got up after the celebration and went home. It was as though the white moon hid in between the white clouds. The Sikhs went to their camps and sang the praises of Guru ji.
3-3 The Sangat is made fun of by Hindus and Turks
Satguru ji, the gracious one, did many amazing things. He wanted to establish a Panth to protect the people of the country and kill the sinners. The day of Vaisakhi came. Sangat from every direction came. People would come like the rain clouds come in the monsoon. Keertan would happen continuously at that time. The Sangat would drink Amrit (Gurbani) and visit Guru ji. People from Dhannighep and Jhaang Syaal would come; Lamma Desh, Multan, Mankera, Peshawar, Kabul, Khurasan, Ghandhaar, Balak Bukhara, Hazaara would come. The Sangat would come with great joy. They would meet Guru ji and see their life a success. They would bring expensive gifts along with their families. They would become pure seeing Guru ji.
Some Hindus and Turks would not like to see this. They were jealous of Guru ji’s glory. Jus as someone who was bald, that person would not like people with hair; if someone was blind, they would not like someone who can see. A person with a flat nose does not like people with sharp noses. The jealous people would make fun of the Sikhs. The Sangat of Guru ji was pious and honest. The Sangat would improve their life in new ways. They would come singing Gurbani. The Turks were the owners. They did not like the Sikhs and their progress. The Hindus would see the Sikhs and make fun of them as well. They would make up their own words and sing them to make fun of the Bani the Sikhs were singing. The Turks would start fights with them. They would bother and bully the Sikhs as they would travel to Anandpur. The Sangat was made known of their minority. It seemed as though nobody was happy to see them. They were jealous to the Guru’s glory. The Sikhs thought to themselves: “these people feel like we are taking their glory from them. Our glory comes from the Guru.” The Sangat came to Guru ji, sad. They saw Guru ji and received wisdom. They folded their hands and did Ardaas to Satguru ji: “the Hindus and Turks see us coming and bully us for no reason. We have no hatred towards them. We just avoid them or ignore them. We mind our business but they see us as their enemies. They cause problems for us on the way. They don’t let us fill water from the wells. Both Hindus and Turks hate us for no reason. They laugh at us. They do not like the Simran of Prabhoo. They are messing up their life and after-life.” Guru ji heard the Sangat and said: “you are the Gurmukh wise Sikhs. Listen to me: you come without weapons. It doesn’t matter how big a person is, but if the person does not have a weapon, the person looks alone. I command you to wear weapons when you come to me. You have to travel far. Without a tongue, you can not answer anyone back. When the enemy sees you with weapons, they will not bother you. Without Shasters, they will bother you. If have Shasters and someone bothers you, then you can fight back. Don’t back down, just fight. The Guru will assist you. You will win. Come to the next Mela with weapons. This is my command. Fasten weapons to your body. In every Yuga, the glory of the Shasters was the greatest. In Kaliyuga, the Kharag is the greatest. Seeing its glory, the enemy will back down. The enemy and friends will be happy to see you. It will avoid problems. Practice Shaster Vidya everyday. The practice will give you peace in every world. If someone dies fighting, they will go to heaven and be in joy in many ways. If the person stays alive, they will get the joys of this world. The significance and glory of the Shasters is great. For this reason, realize the real traditions of the Sanatan Dharma and keep Shasters.” The Sangat heard this and went back to their homes. They went home and began to collect Shasters. They were inspired to keep weapons in their homes.
After a few months, the Sangat got ready to go to Anandpur. This time, they fastened weapons to their bodies. They had swords in their gatras. Some fastened quivers with arrows and hung bows on their shoulders. Some kept pechkabs and Jamdhars. The Sangat looked like an army, travelling towards Anandpur. As they walked, Hindus and Turks saw them, felt scared and didn’t come close. Where there were more people, the Sikhs would fight. Some Sikhs died in those fights. Some just got injured and had to stay back. They ones that were well, came to Anandpur and met Guru ji. They would bow to Guru ji’s feet with joy. The way they would fight, they would tell Guru ji. Guru ji would hear this and be happy. He saw the motivation in the Sikhs and made it deeper: “this is the way to deal with the enemy. These people get scared when you have weapons. Keep your defence. Don’t be the first to start a fight. Never strike first or instigate a fight.” The Sikhs heard the wisdom from Guru ji and kept Shasters with them. They came to see Guru ji and weren’t afraid of death anymore. The people from the West were bothered the most but were good now. They travelled like armies now. The people of the West got together and kept weapons all the time. They came in groups when they came to Anandpur. The Sikh became known as warriors now. They were not just saints anymore. The Sikhs would do Keertan without worry. Their love would grow more. They would stop and camp anywhere they liked. The other Sikhs would serve the elders by massaging their legs and feet. The Sikhs supported each other. They would feed each other with love. They would help each other by bringing and warming water for baths. They would wash each others clothes. They would smile and meet each other. They would eat together after thinking of Guru ji and doing Ardaas. They would wake up in the morning and bathe. They would keep weapons with them all the time. After getting ready, they would continue their travels. They would be alert on the way. They would meet other Sikhs with love. They would only stay in the villages where there were Sikhs. The Turks saw the Sikhs with weapons and got concerned. The Hindus would make fun of the Sikhs and copy them. The Turks were jealous of the Sikhs, seeing them progress. But what was going to happen, was surely to happen. This was not in control of any human. Whatever Akaal Purakh wishes, is what was going to happen. Fights began to occur often. This fire began to grow. Many ports and points had fights. Many sinners were cut and thrown away. The Guru assisted the Sikhs to give them power. The Sikhs chopped heads. The Turks saw the glory and ran away. They didn’t come near them then. They saw many of their people dead and did not bother the Sikhs. There were about 4 major fights that happened. The enmity got bigger though. When the Sangat saw that the enemy was not stopping, they all took up weapons. The people stopped bothering them then. The Sangat would do Keertan and carry weapons as they would reach Anandpur.
The Sangat would worship Guru ji and give him their heads. Guru ji would be happy and say: “you are great. You listened to me and so you will rule one day. The Guru is happy with you. Tell me what happened on the way?” The Sikhs would tell him: “Guru ji, the fights have gone worse but we know you are with us. We have no other support besides you. It is hard to come to Anandpur now. The hatred was gone worse in the Hindus and Turks. Some Sikhs died in fights. They thought of your feet and reached martyrdom. Many were injured who we had to leave in other villages. When they are well, they will come here. We don’t know anybody in this area as we are from other countries. We are minorities. You are the master of the Sikhs. You know everything. Please protect your Sikhs. You are the only support for Sikhs. If you help us then Sikhi will be saved.” Guru ji was worried after hearing the Sikhs. For an hour, Guru ji sat quietly in his full court. The names of the dead Sikhs were read out. Guru ji began to think deeply. Nobody else talked. Everyone in the court looked towards Guru ji.
Guru ji then went home and laid down. He began to think how to save the Sikhs. “I don’t wish to use miracles. But without miracles, it won’t work. What should be done? Miracles could be used but not be seen.” Guru ji was going to fill the power in the Panth which will be given through the Shasters. “It is not right to show miracles. The battle should be won with weapons just as Sri Ram Chander ji won the war. He did not use miracles. Sri Krishan ji had powers but did not use them in fighting Jarasandh. He killed the enemy with his strength. This tradition needs to be kept. The Turks must be killed in war.” Guru ji thought long and hard. He wanted to call upon the weapon-wielding Chandi, the power of war, the power of Akaal Purakh. The great warriors had this power. The great Jogis had this power in their conscious. It was time to call upon the Chandi. Chandi will do all the things for war. Durga assisted many warriors in war and gave them victory. “These are my parents: Akaal Purakh and Chandi. I worship only them. I do not worship anyone else. I don’t need to worship anyone else. I have nothing to take from anyone else. If the power comes, the Turks will die in one day. The Hindu Rajas will lose as well. My Sikhs will become Kings. If I show the miracles, the way of Guru Nanak Dev ji would be violated. I cannot use miracles. People will know of my powers then. I cannot show them this. The creator and sustainer of the world is the Mother of all Creation. She assists the saints and gives them peace and joy. I will need to show the world the war with the Sword. All the Turks will be shaken. The Dharma of Kshatriyas will be the Dharma of the Khalsa. The bad-intentioned sinners will be destroyed.” Guru ji then got up and said to the Sangat: “don’t worry. I will convince the Mother of the Universe for you. She will appear in Kaliyuga and she will assist you in war to kill the enemy. Their roots will be pulled.” Guru ji gave hope to the Sikhs. The Sikhs were happy to hear that Guru ji will worship Chandi ji himself. Guru Gobind Singh ji, the great.
3-4 Meeting Keshav Das
Sri Satguru ji Maharaj thought about how Chandi can appear. Guru ji laid down to sleep at night. His face was very radiant. Guru ji woke up at Amritvela. His eyes were radiant. There was Gurbani being sung and read everywhere in Anandpur. Sweet Raags were sung with Mridangs. The taars of the instruments were plucked, the Mridangs were sounded, Alaaps were sung, the Wisdom-giving Gurbani was sung. The wisdom would reside in the Sikhs’ hearts, which destroyed the desires, anger and greed from many births. As the Nagaras sounded, the enemies’ hearts would tremble in fear. The Naqeebs and Bhatts would sing the praises of the Guru. There was “Kartar, Kartar” sounding everywhere. Conches, Napheeryas, Shehnais were heard everywhere. The Keertanis sang Keertan and the Bhatts sang the praises. The sleeping Sikhs would hear these sounds and wake up. The sounds were played at the doors of the Guru’s court. The gem of the Hindus, woke up at Amritvela and discarded his sleep. The Sevadaars came and brought Guru ji’s Dastaar. They brought 7 pots with rose essence, sandalwood essence, Shaheedi Degh with ground almonds, elachis, cloves, black peppers, cannabis, along with rose water and saffron; Chatterdhaara was presented as well. After consuming the Degh, Guru ji would go to do his bodily routines and take a bath. Guru ji would then sit in Samadhi for 3 hours. The clothes that came from a far away land were worn. They were very fine and expensive. He wore everything new this day. He put his jewellery on his body. Guru ji headed towards his throne as the sun came up. Guru ji would look beautiful with his clothes and weapons.
One Sikh came to see Guru ji. He bowed and said: “Guru Paatshaah ji, I request you, the Brahmins who praised to you, his name is Keshav Das. He lives in Shiv ji’s city, Kanshi. Keshav Das has unexpectedly arrived in Anandpur, without being called upon. He is in the gardens right now. He knows the way to do Pooja of Chandi. He is a scholar and a practitioner of the Dharma. Many people have come along with him. He was travelling to the 52 Shakti Peets. He called upon me and asked me what Guru ji’s wishes were. I told him that you wished to make the Shakti appear to kill the sinners.” Guru ji was really happy to hear this. The Sikh continued: “when I told him about you, he wished to see you in your court. He would like your permission to see you Guru ji. He was happy to hear that you wish to establish the Dharam and kill the sinners. We have seen his intentions. He came by his own account and wishes to see you. We don’t know why he has come. You wished to see him but never sent him a message. Your ways are unique. You can call anyone without calling them. Prabhoo ji, you are omnipotent and can inspire other minds in unique ways.” Guru ji was happy. Guru ji said: “great is the Kharagket. Akaal Purakh ji, you completed my task. You truly do what your servant wishes. You live in every heart and are the King of Kings.” Pandit Daya Ram ji and Divaan Nand Chand ji were called close to Guru ji. Guru ji said to them: “in the gardens, (present day Shaheedi Bhaag) a person by the name of Keshav Das is here. Welcome him with respect and prepare for his meal. Give his and his people’s horses feed. Provide Langar and other items of needs. See what type of food he eats and prepare accordingly. Find out where Pandit ji wants to go next. I want him to meet me first.” Purohit ji and Divaan ji went to the gardens.
The gardens were beautiful with many flowers and plants. Keshav Das’ chariot was parked. His students were with him. Keshav Dev ji was sitting cross-legged on a bench. Daya Ram ji brought 5 Munns of ladoos for the Brahmins. Langar and other foods were brought in great big pots for everyone. They said to him: “Brahmin ji, this is the Degh of the Guru. Poor and rich, all eat from this Langar. Prabhoo ji sent us to welcome you. Where are you heading to? Where is your home? What is the purpose of your travels.” The Brahmin said to Pandit Daya Ram ji: “I live in the city of Shivji, Banaras. Every person gets Mukti there. I had a wish in my heart for many years, to visit the Jvalamukhi Latta valli in Kangar. Lately, my desire got intense, and so I made the decision to travel. Many others had the same desire as me and came along. Many scholars sing the praises of Guru Gobind Singh ji in Banaras. I have heard that when Guru ji donates to someone, they do not have to ask for anything again. I came here to meet Guru ji and then go to Jvalamukhi. Tell Guru ji that I bless him with praises. When Guru ji remembers me, I will come.” Daya Ram ji and Nand Chand ji heard this and told Guru ji.
Guru ji told Daya Ram ji and Nand Chand ji: “please see what else Pandit ji may need. Scholars are usually proud of their knowledge. They can get upset quickly. You will have to deal with him accordingly.” Divaan ji and Pandit ji sent all the items of need to the gardens. It was almost evening. Guru ji had his Shaheedi Degh and then bathed. He wore clothes and tied his Kalgi and Jigha. The room had a lot of gold and mirrors. There was a golden bed there with white cloths. The ropes were silk. Guru ji sat on the bed. The close Sikhs came close and stood by Guru ji. These people were very skilled in Vedas, Shaster Vidya, Poetry and Sangeet. These people would stay in Guru ji’s court all the time. They were the most intelligent people in the country. Guru ji said to Pandit Daya Ram ji: “go and bring Keshav Das here with respect.” Daya Ram ji went to the gardens. He met Keshav Das ji and said: “Guru ji was remembering you. It is time to come and see Guru ji now.” Keshav Das got ready and headed towards Guru ji’s court. He brought a few people with him as well. He had a coconut and 5 Paisas with him. Keshav Das saw Guru ji. He placed the coconut and money in front of Guru ji. He bowed to Guru ji’s feet. The Sikhs had a stool placed for Keshav Das. As Keshav Das sat down, he looked towards Guru ji and saw Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Shakti and all the Devatas in Guru ji. He was mesmerized by Guru ji’s form. He saw Krishan ji in him. He thought to himself: “just as Bhagavan’s form is described in the Puranas, that is how beautiful the Guru is. He is full of virtues.” Keshav Das lost his senses looking at Guru ji. He kept staring at Guru ji. He saw that Guru ji was all-powerful and omniscient.” Guru ji, the gracious one, noticed that Keshav Das was mesmerized and was not going to speak. Guru ji said: “Brahmin ji, who is your Isht (the one who you worship)? Who do you do Simran Aradhana of? Which Isht do you ask for Mukti?” Keshav Das said: “I believe in Chandika. She is my Isht, who Devatas go to, to beg from. She kills the ego of the sinners. She is the Mother of the Universe. Her place is the Jvalamukhi, the highest of the 52 Shakti Peets. I have left my home to go there. She is the Aad Shakti. All the Devatas came from her. She is the origin. All powers are from her. Brahma and other powers serve her. I meditate on her feet. I worship her day and night.” Guru ji heard this and said: “I wish to worship the Mother of the Universe. I wish to have her appear and meet me. I will ask for her blessings. You know the traditions of making her appear. Prepare all this and I will meet her. Do as your traditions are. I will give you all the money and items of need. Even the rarest items, I will bring them for you. Whatever Mantras and Havans need to be done, do them. Tell me how long will this worship be. Everyone praised you when I asked for this. They told me that you know how to do the worship of Chandika. If you have come, please do this worship and make the Chandika appear to destroy the Mughals’ radiance.” Hearing Sri Kalgidhar ji’s words, Keshav Das discussed with all the other Brahmins and thought about everything.
3-5 Collecting the Samaghri
Keshav Das said to Guru ji: “Sri Satguru Maharaj Prabhoo, I will tell you what I need to do the Havan. When we do the Havan, we need to give many Ahootis and fragrant essences. We need a lot of money by which everything can be done. We need more than 1 Lakh Ahooti. Collecting all this Samaghri, money and dry fruits will be very expensive. It will take Lakhs of Paisas. Thousands of Paisa won’t do. You are Kshatriya, you know the traditions. When Shakti appears, you need to have a strong will and stamina to stand her power. You will need to be without fear. If you are a true Kshatriya, you will be able to stand her. Once we begin, we will have to be determined. The tradition for you and the people around you will be strict. Everyone will have duties by which they will need to be fulfilled with determination. First of all, everyone will have to be celibates for the time. The maryada of “Brahachraj” will be applied. No anger, greed, lust or ego can come into your mind. You cannot think bad of any one. No slandering or back-talking. You will have to be in control of your senses and desires. You can’t listen to much nor talk too much. You will have to focus on the Jaap of Chandi. The body and mind must be in abstinence. Your mind must focus on the one Chandi. If you can do this, then Chandi will appear in Kaliyuga. It is very hard to make her appear in Kaliyuga. The mind is not pure in Kaliyuga. Worries and desires surround the mind. The people doing the Pooja and getting it done, they will all have to follow these rules. In Satyuga, Treta and Dvapara: Chandika did not appear easily. It is the fierce time of Kaliyuga, it is full of sin and desire. The whole world is full of sin. The Devatas have left the earth. They do not come here anymore. They have gone to the mountains such as Mer. Some have gone to other dimensions. Gorakh and other saints used to teach people. Now that sins have increased, they left the land and went towards the mountains. Nobody listens to them anymore. Satguru ji, to make the Devi appear is difficult. The power has no form. Please tell us how the money will come. We have no rasayan (philosopher stone that makes iron to gold) to make gold. You do not have a kingdom. Even kings don’t have this kind of money. The radiance of the Turks is bright. They commit sin and make their friends do bad things. They are tyrants. This task is really difficult. You have divine powers. You can do this though, Guru ji.” Pandit Daya Ram ji then spoke: “have faith in Satguru ji. He is the king of kings. He has no shortage of money. His hand is the paaras (philosopher’s stone). He is the pure form of Kshatriyas. He is the greatest ever. There has never been a greater Kshatriya than him. He took an avatar in the Sooraj Vansh, in which great warriors were born like Ram Chander ji, Raghu, Daleep, Saghar and other great kings. There is no other person that has control on his body and mind like Guru ji. We can count the greatest people but they do not live up to Guru ji. He has four sons and has only lived in the family house for four days. Otherwise he has kept a strict life of abstinence. He can finish other people’s desires with his one word. Don’t be concerned with his control on his desires. His Sikhs have won their desires as well. He is like Janaka Raja, in one state of mind. Have faith on the Satguru. He has contentment in every sector of life. Stay here for a few days, only then you will know Satguru ji. Don’t listen to me, see for yourself.” Daya Ram ji praised Guru ji to tell Keshav Das. Guru ji then spoke: “stay here for a few days. We need to destroy the Mughals. We need to stop them. Whatever you need, you will get. All the preparations will be done. By morning, you will see the treasury. All the items you need, we will get twice as much. Stay here and test us. You won’t be disappointed.” Keshav Das then said: “this task is difficult. You are omnipotent. You can do everything. I had to say all this. You can do the impossible. Alright, I will stay here. If this task is successful, it will be very good for the whole country. The ancient Dharma of Sanatan Dharam will be re-established. The Mother of the Universe appears, it is my wish. This is the only way the grip of Mughals will be relieved. Only you can save the Hindu Dharma, otherwise it will be gone. The traditions of the Vedas will be destroyed otherwise.” Keshav Das ji then went back to his camp. He was happy to meet Guru ji who was without desire and wanted to bring peace to the land.
Satguru ji was anxious to get this task done. Guru ji wanted to save the traditions. It was night time. Everyone ate and slept. Guru ji got up at Amritvela and bathed. He wore his clothes. Guru ji was really happy. The Masands and Sevadaars came to Guru ji and bowed to hm. Sri Kalgidhar ji commanded them: “everyone needs to work together. All the gifts that came from the last two days, collect them all in and tell me how much it is. I want to know how much money came in the last Mela.” All the scholars and managers gathered the money and counted it. It was 9 Lakh Rupees. They came and told Guru ji. Guru ji then said: “deposit it into the treasury. The Sikhs from other countries who couldn’t come, send them a Hukamnama to send their Dasvands. The Sikhs that came now, give them Siropas so they can go back home to their household tasks. Our soldiers should be paid as well. Tell the soldiers they can go home and take money back home. Tell them to go for holidays for a few weeks and spend time with their families.” The Divans and Masands took their duties and performed their tasks by which was required and commanded by Guru j. The Sangat was given leave. The Sangat took the Siropas and went back home. The items that were needed, Guru ji had the tasks done. Keshav Das was called by Guru ji. Keshav Das bowed and also gave Guru ji the blessing: “may your kingdom be stretched to the seas. May your radiance be as much as the sun as the May sun. (This was the traditions of the Brahmins to bless everyone).” He then sat down besides Guru ji. Guru ji said to Keshav Das: “Pandit ji, please write us a list of all the items needed for the Havan. Do it quickly. We will bring you twice as much. Nothing will be in shortage. Don’t be afraid. Tell us exactly what you need. This is Guru Nanak’s treasury.” Keshav Das thought about this and decided what was needed: ghee, sesame seeds, rice, meva, sugar, pistachios, almonds, betelnut, chwaras, coconuts, incense and other fragrances of sandalwood, rose water and essences in glass bottles, saffron: he wrote all this down. He gave this list to Guru ji. There were other things they discussed by which Jagat Mata was going to appear. Keshav Das was afraid that Guru ji didn’t have money but now he was satisfied. He knew that the Guru was omnipotent. He had faith in Guru ji. He got everything he needed. He said to Guru ji: “listen Guru ji, think about this: by the traditions of the Vedas and Shastras, I have thought about everything along with Tantra Shasters, thousands of Vidyas; the Mantras to make Agni Dev appear, I know all this. In Kaliyuga, this is hard to do. It’s hard to find an organizer like you or a Mantra chanter like me. If Chandika blesses us, only you can do this. No other Raja in Hindustan can do this. They either have a hair cut or they are not without desires. May your wish be fulfilled. You have all the signs of Gyanis.” Guru ji said: “Missar ji (Pandit Ji), it will be done. It is the time to do this now. All the items are collected. Why won’t it be successful?” Keshav Das went back to his camp. He was in deep thought.
Guru ji called the Sikhs and gave them the lists. The Sikhs went to the other villages to get the items. He gave Hoondis to the Sikhs to get money from the far away banks. It was hard to carry so much money. The Sikhs went all around to get the items required. Dry fruit and ghee were bought. The clever Sikhs who knew how to buy items, they were all sent to different places. They collected all the items and brought them to Anandpur after visiting other cities.
