2-41 Bijhadvaliay Dyaal Dies
The Bijadvalia Pahari Raja was a strong warrior. He knew battle tactics very well. His name was Dyaal. Raja Dyaal met Kirpal Katochia and said: “listen to the story of the battle. Guru ji has come with the Kahiloori Raja and has surrounded the fort. If we look at the enemy’s strength and leave the fort, that won’t be good. We should raise our chins and face the enemy. If Bheem Chand wins today, we would be laughed at amongst our Pahari Rajas. Look at me, I am fighting. Whoever comes towards me, I make them back off.” Kirpal Chand said to him: “I will stay with you and kill Bheem Chand’s warriors.” Both Rajas fought back, seeing themselves without options. They shot many arrows. They called their warriors to fight. They held their spears and aimed their guns, filling it with gunpowder and bullets. They fought their enemy and killed many, sending them to the land of Jumms. Everyone came out of the fort to face the enemy. Kirpal Katochia was very angry. The vaajas of the battle played: the dhols, Nagaras and other instruments sounded. They shouted: “kill them!” The swords were out and shinning; warriors were injured; limbs were cut. Hands were cut, shoulders were sliced, the feet were hacked off. The heads were chopped; the bodies laid on the floor in lines. Just as popcorn pop, that is how the guns sounded. The soldiers engaged in battle and the noise was loud. The bowstrings were rung and the sharp arrows flew. The swords were clashing. The warriors were bleeding. There was blood everywhere. It looked like red flowers without any leaves. Kirpal Chand fought with great anger. His face was tense with anger. He killed many with his sword. He whipped his horse and rode fast. He released many arrows. The warriors crawled on the floor; arrows and bullets flew. Many died. The patient ones were angry but did not lose formation.
Dyaal Bijadvalia made a fierce charge yelling: “kill them!” They tried to be clever to kill the enemy and wanted to push them back. Bheem Chand saw his army go backwards from Dyaal Chand’s attack. He said to Prithi Chand: “tell your soldiers to fight ahead. Encourage them. You will have to go ahead. It is time for war, you can’t run now. Kirpal Chand and Dyaal Chand are here to kill us.” Prithi Chand Dhadhvali said: “watch me fight.” Prithi Chand called out to his army: “fight like warriors. Don’t run back. If you go back, you will be slandered in both words. You won’t be accepted in heaven. Think about the honor of your Rajputana. You are Kshatriyas, bring glory to your ancestors’ name. Die fighting.” The soldiers heard him and turned around to attack. It was like clouds being moved by the wind. The arrows and bullets rained upon them. The other army moved back now. The gave a fierce attack at the sound of the Dhonsas and napheeryas. They fought each other. Dyaal Chand was a great warrior who saw great damage to his army by Guru ji’s army and Bheem Chand’s army. He shouted out: “Kirpal Chand Katochia has mad a fierce charge. Kill them with arrows and bullets. Keep your lines. Look at me, I will release arrows.” Kirpal Chand heard this and rode forward. He shot arrows, hard. A fierce battle raged on. Arrows busted the warriors. There were loud noises. Prithi Chand advanced with his warriors. They wielded their swords and struck hard. There was a charge upon charge. The Nagaras sounded and the warriors jumped, looking like dancers on the field. They fought face to face. Kirpal Chand’s army backed down again. Dyaal Chand released sharp black arrows. He stopped all the warriors with his arrows. He killed all the warriors that advanced. He yelled out loud as he fought. Bheem Chand saw him and went to Guru ji. He said to Guru ji: “why don’t you take the victory? Why are you delaying it? Dyaal Chand needs to die. Please keep my honor, seeing me as your own. You are here now. It will be you who will be known for the win or loss.” Guru ji heard Bheem Chand and took his gun from his servant. Guru ji readied the gun and filled it with gunpowder. He was going to send Dyaal Chand to the life hereafter. He knew that he was a great pillar that was holding the battle up: “he releases many arrows. After killing him, victory will be ours,” Guru ji thought to himself. Guru ji rode his horse and aimed at Dyaal Chand. He went close to Dyaal Chand and said to him: “attention! You killed many soldiers. Nobody stood in front of you. I will only strike you once.” When Dyaal Chand heard Guru ji, he fired arrows towards Guru ji. Guru ji dodged all his arrows by moving his horse, riding forward with great speed. He said to Guru ji: “let’s see if you can escape my arrows,” roaring like a lion. Guru ji heard him and fired his gun. The bullet flew, swishing through the air and hit Dyaal Chand in the chest. Dyaal Chand spun around and fell from his horse. He died instantly and didn’t have time to ask for water. It was as though an old tree was uprooted by a storm. His hands and feet were spread out as he fell to the ground. His mouth was open and his head was bare. The bullet passed through his body. He bled through both sides. He died a warrior’s death from the hands of Kalgidhar Paatshaah, therefore we went to the abode of the Devatas (heaven). The Apsaras welcomed him as he came to heaven. He gave his life, like a warrior, facing the enemy, head-on. His sins and faults were all washed away because of this.
Dyaal Chand’s army lost their enthusiasm. Kirpal Chand saw his partner in war, die. The other Rajas on his side were worried. Guru ji broke the door, the pillar of the army by killing Dyaal Chand. The whole army was worried now. Dyaal Chand was a great door, which broke. Bheem Chand saw Guru ji kill Dyaal Chand and figured that victory was theirs now. Bheem Chand and Prithi Chand were very happy and said: “the enemy will not stay standing long.” They fired their guns. The bullets flew like big hail on the enemy. The soldiers from both sides fired arrows. The spears pierced the chests. The soldiers met face to face and fought fiercely. There was chaos everywhere. The ground was red from blood and flesh. Many horses died along with the soldiers. The soldiers spun around as they fell.
2-42 Winning the Battle/ Alaf Khan runs away in the Night
Some soldiers of the enemy gathered their courage and continued to fought. Internally, they lost their courage, seeing Guru Gobind Singh ji. Guru ji gave his gun to his servant and roared like a lion. He grabbed his bow and rode his horse forward. He wanted to win this battle now. He took out an arrow from his quiver, that looked like a snake. It was sharp. He released it hard, with the warrior spirit. It spurred through the wind and struck fear into the hearts of the enemy. The enemy began to shout in fear. They looked around and wanted to run. Guru ji released a second arrow with great force, pulling it to his ear as he let it go. He showered his arrows, one after the other. The arrows pierced many soldiers, as Guru ji picked them off, one-by-one. The enemy trembled with fear. The arrows flew fast. Guru ji was quick to release them. The arrows would pass right through the chests. The enemy would fall from their horses, screaming in pain. Guru ji released 4 arrows with anger, using his right hand. He then released 3 arrows with his left hand. He busted the limbs of the enemy. Guru ji was in the warrior spirit. His face was red. He went roaring like a lion. His horse’s legs wouldn’t touch the ground, as he round through the field. He didn’t let the enemy rest. Guru ji reached the barrier of planks. The enemy lost confidence and hid behind the barrier. Bheem Chand called out to his soldiers, taking Guru ji’s blessings: “go forth and attack!” The army attacked fiercely saying “kill them!” The battle was in full force. Kirpal Chand saw his army backing down after Dyaal Chand died. Nobody could face Guru ji’s arrows. The soldiers fought slowly. They hid back into the wooden fort. Many soldiers were outside but were scared to see Guru ji. The guns fired and pierced the soldiers. The swords sliced the limbs. Bheem Chand’s army was now confident that they were going to win. The Nagaras and Napheeryas played louder to boost morale. The bodies piled upon each other. Dogs and vultures came to eat the flesh. The vultures ate with beak-full of meat. Crows crooked and dogs barked. The Joganis came to drink the blood and danced in joy.
The soldiers were pushed away. They were surrounded and showered with bullets. The soldiers ran and struck them. They terrorized the soldiers, wielding their swords. Whoever stood, they were killed. Guru ji only released 7 arrows to win the war. Only 7 arrows made the enemy run back in. Whoever was standing outside, they left their post to go inside the wooden fort. Guru ji saw them run back in and fight from inside. Kirpal Chand was surrounded and a fierce battle was fought. Thousands of bullets flew. Kirpal Chand noticed he was surrounded. He stopped his soldiers and said: “we have lost.” Everyone was scared, that if they went outside, they would die. In this way, Guru ji won the battle of Nadhaun. Both armies knew that there was no other warrior stronger than Guru ji. He was foreign to fear. He was the most courageous warrior. He made the enemy run away. Just as he won the battle of Bhangaani, he won his second battle too. The Paharis from both sides now feared Guru ji. Bheem Chand was happy but a deep fear struck his heart as well, seeing that the Guru was unstoppable and undefeatable. He was way stronger than he could imagine. Nadhaun was won like Bhangaani. Everyone now knew that the Guru was a courageous and powerful warrior. The soldiers from both sides spoke of the praises of Guru Gobind Singh ji. The enemy was pushed back into the fort.
The Nagaras of victory were sounded and everyone went back to their camps as dusk fell. Satguru ji set up camp and rested. Bheem Chand set up camp at a distance. He was happy as he rested the night. It was a very dark night. You couldn’t see another person. Everyone ate and slept. Half of the army went to sleep and the other half kept watch.
Up at the wooden fort, Alaf Khan and Kirpal Chand had a discussion: “we can’t win now. We didn’t think Guru Gobind Singh ji was going to come. Let’s leave this fort and run away. Dyaal Chand Bijadvalia has died. Guru Gobind Singh is the best warrior, he is helping Bheem Chand. His one bullet turned the tide of the war. In the morning there will be a battle and the army of Guru ji and Bheem Chand’s people will attack. Our army will suffer. We may die too. Dyaal Chand was a great warrior. We will have to fight now. The Guru will come into the battlefield and cause chaos. Who can face him? Let’s not face death. Let’s leave. We will see Bheem Chand when the Guru is not with him. We will wage war and win him. Alaf Khan, we will remain friends. Trust me.” Alaf Khan heard him. He understood that what Kirpal Chand was saying, was true. There is only death now. He said: “you are right. We will attack when the Guru is gone. We will surround him and kill him.” In this way they made preparations to leave. They had one person sit at a high place and told him to: “keep playing the Nagara all night long. When it’s morning, leave it and run away. Don’t stop till you leave so the enemy thinks we are still here.”
Kirpal Chand and Alaf Khan ran away during the night, seeing great damage to their armies. They left like thieves at night. They were quiet as they left. They couldn’t be seen as they went home.
Guru ji and Bheem Chand, were resting in their camps. In the morning, they heard the Nagara, which was playing all night. They said: “the army is still inside.” The Nagara then stopped all of a sudden. The army went to the fort and saw that it was empty. Everyone was gone. They said: “the enemy ran away like cowards. Alaf Khan left with his Khans. Kirpal Chand Katochia lost his courage and ran away like a coward. They left with all the warriors.” Bheem Chand’s army, Ram Singh’s army and the others went close to the wooden fort and saw it empty. They said to themselves: “these people were cowards. They were scared of Guru ji.” Bheem Chand was happy that he won. He set up camp close to Nadhaun. He was worry-free now. The river flowed beautifully close by. It was the Beas River. Its water was clear and pure. It was unstoppable as it flowed through the mountains. Guru ji set up camp close to the shore with the Sikhs. Everyone praised Guru Gobind Singh ji: “Guru ji gives glory to his servants and kills the enemy. He protects anyone who comes to him, with love and devotion.” Everyone spent another day there as they ate and celebrated.
Satguru ji sat upon a high place in the mountains, amongst the trees and great mountain ranges. He was admiring the blue river of the Beas. He stayed here for many days. The Rajas of the area had Guru ji come to their homes. The Rajas that were his enemies, now pleaded for him to visit their homes. Bheem Chand tried to keep Guru ji happy in various ways. He said to him: “Guru ji, I won this war with your help. I couldn’t have faced such a big army on my own. All of the enemy are now afraid of you. Alaf Khan ran away because of your radiance. You won the war with only 7 arrows.” Guru ji stayed here for about 16 or 17 days. Guru ji stayed in bliss, near the shores of the Beas.
2-43 Aalsoon Attacked
Among the 22 Pahari Rajas, Satguru ji was the bravest, most-skilled and strongest warrior. Within the Paharis, some were friends and some were enemies. Where they would get together and have a court, they would talk about war and weaponry, horse riding, and archery. Among them, Kalgidhar ji was considered the best warrior, archer and scholar. They would say: “whoever says Guru Gobind Singh ji’s name, they would become brave, kill the enemy and win the war. It doesn’t matter how many are in the enemy’s army, Guru ji does not count. A small army with weapons is good enough for him. He goes into the battlefield without any fear. He kills the enemy, who comes in front of him. The enemy always flees in fear when they see him. Guru ji takes the Bijai Laxmi (Goddess of Victory).” In this way they sang his praises. The Rajas came to meet Guru ji and bowed to him.
The Nadhaun city has beautiful homes made by the Rajas. The houses were made by a material called “choona,” which is longer-lasting than cement. The doors were very high. The buildings were very beautiful with golden domes on the top. There was craftsmanship and engravings on them. The rooms were made in a way that were cool in the heat and warm in the cold. The Beas River flowed by this city. There were many types of houses and palaces here. The Pahari Rajas would remain standing in front of Guru Gobind Singh ji and wanted to show their palaces to him. They wanted him to place his holy feet in their homes to bless them. They would bring him to their palaces. They would travel around the mountains with Guru ji, showing him their gardens and hunting areas. They would try to keep him happy. They saw Guru ji as omnipotent and omniscient. They gave him many gifts of horses and weapons. Guru ji stayed in the houses here for 8 days. It was a beautiful place. Guru ji stayed in those houses and roamed the mountains for sight-seeing. The water in the Beas was blue and pure. The houses were on top of the mountains. The sound of the river flowing echoed in the values, spreading joy. Guru ji would sit down to hear this sound and begin to compose Bani or admire the nature. Poets would come and read out their poems to Guru ji. Guru ji would enjoy listening to the poets and discuss other compositions. He would speak to scholars and have discussions. He would talk about spirituality, religion, war and politics. There were tall trees and many flowers in this valley.
Bheem Chand and Kirpal Chand began to have talks of truce between them. They had negotiators go from both sides. They tried to get rid of the enmity. They eventually came to an agreement and called a truce. This was not discussed with Guru Gobind Singh ji though. Bheem Chand did not include the king of the battlefield, Satguru ji, in his talks, who gave him the victory. Guru ji heard that in a few days, the Pahari Rajas will meet to call a truce. Guru ji did not like that he was not consulted during this time, as Bheem Chand came to ask for help during his time of need from Guru ji. Calling a truce with Kirpal Chand would mean that they would be giving in to the Mughal Crown’s demands. Guru ji came to understand that Bheem Chand had showed his back to Guru ji again. Bheem Chand was a coward after all, afraid of war. They kept it hidden from Guru ji. Guru ji told Divaan Nand Chand to get ready to leave.
Guru ji had the Ranjeet Nagara played to get ready. The horses were saddled. The sound of the Nagaras was heard by the Pahari Rajas and were shocked to hear the Nagara all of a sudden. They were worried and thought: “is Guru ji getting ready for battle or is he leaving all of a sudden? We didn’t hear about Guru ji leaving. It looks like things are bad with Bheem Chand again.” As soon as Bheem Chand heard about this, he sent his Vizier and told him: “ask Prabhoo ji why the Nagara was played all of a sudden. Why are we hearing the deep thundering sound of the Nagara?” Devi Das went to Guru ji’s camp and met Guru ji. He bowed to Guru ji’s feet and said: “I bow to you from Raja Bheem Chand and all of the other Pahari Rajas. Raja Bheem Chand sent me. He is worried why you sounded the Nagara all of a sudden. I have come to ask you about this.” Guru ji was in “birr rass” and spoke with anger: “why was I called here? I dropped everything and came here as quickly as I could for you. I killed Dyaal Chand. I gave Bheem Chand victory and he became egotistical now. He forgot what I did for him. He didn’t tell me and went on ahead to call a truce with the enemy. I will mount my horse and head back home. Sitting here is a waste of time for me now. I have nothing more to do here. Bheem Chand doesn’t wish to consult me anymore. Bheem Chand has no task left for me. I completed my task which I came for.” Vizier Devi Das heard Guru ji and bowed to him. He left right away and went back to Bheem Chand.
Devi Das came back to Bheem Chand and said: “we have made a mistake. Guru ji is leaving because he is upset. He is going to Anandpur.” Bheem Chand heard this and sent a message to Guru ji: “Guru ji, we have made a mistake. Please forgive us. Please stay a few days. We will leave together.” The message was heard by Guru ji. Guru ji did not accept his apology. Guru ji said: “there is nothing left for me here to do.” When Bheem Chand found out that Guru ji was not going to stay, he got really anxious and uneasy. He came to Guru ji himself.
Bheem Chand met Guru ji and bowed to his lotus feet. He gifted a horse to Guru ji with a beautiful golden saddle with silk padding. He brought pashmina clothes for Guru ji. Guru ji departed but wasn’t happy. Guru ji and the Sikhs mounted their horses and left, playing the Nagara, loudly. The Nagara was played loud along the way as well. The army of the Sikhs left on their horses by shouting out Jaikaras: “Akaal hi Akaal!” Guru ji had discussions with his Sikhs, Divaan Nand Chand, Purohit Daya Ram ji and others. Pandit Daya Ram ji spoke: “the Paharis are unstable. They are opportunists. Their interests are dear to them, nothing else. Prabhoo ji, they are not our friends. They can’t keep the Dharam of their word.” Nand Chand ji then spoke: “we went to the wedding to do a good thing for them. We went to give them the big Tambol of 125,000 Rajitpuns, that you sent. They wanted to kill us as their minds turned. Their logic was flawed with deceit. The fools wanted to take the Tambol and kill us. With your assistance, Guru ji, no enemy came close to us. We got out of the Ghatti with your blessing. We came back with ease. Look at what Fateh Shah did. He listened to his relatives and lost his logic. He came to fight with you, Guru ji, but left facing defeat. He lost his reputation in that war. He wilted and didn’t get anything accomplished. They are still fools that don’t see you as an Avatar of Akaal Purakh. They didn’t see your glory. Bheem Chand has deceit in his mind. He took your help and called a truce with the enemy, without consulting you. If you didn’t kill Dyaal Chand, Guru ji, Bheem Chand would have lost the war. They would have had to pay a punishment to the crown which Alaf Khan would have taken by force. You saved them Guru ji, and look what they did behind your back. They didn’t take your advice. This was wrong. It was cowardly.” Guru ji heard this and said: “this mountain dwellers worship stones. Their wisdom is nothing but rocks and stones. Just as a stone stays in water and doesn’t get wet, in the same way these Paharis will always be slaves to their minds. They are nobody’s friends, unless it is beneficial for them. They will be destroyed by themselves.” In this way, Satguru Bhagavan ji conversed with his Sikhs.
They passed a village named Aalsoon. The people of this village would bother travelling Sikhs. They would steal from them and not let them fill water from their wells. They would beat them and make them run away. Guru ji was already aware of these people. They were from the Rangar caste. The village was big. People of the village heard the Nagara and came out of their homes. Young and old, they all got on top of high places to see Guru Gobind Singh ji and the army. Guru ji was the highest point of glory. The people did not fold their hands or come to see Guru ji. They were fools as they were proud of their king, Raja Bheem Chand. They were egotistical and didn’t understand Guru ji’s glory. Guru ji was already upset at Bheem Chand. It was as though the fire of anger was about to get the “ahooti” (offering to the fire during havans) when the people didn’t bow. Guru ji looked towards Aalsoon. The powerful and radiant Satguru, commanded Divaan ji: “Nand Chand, take some soldiers and loot this village. Whoever comes to attack, strike them and throw them out of the village. Punish these fools for looting the Guru’s Sangat. Their King is a fool and so are his subjects. They should all know what the result of their deceitful actions is. They need to feel the pain.” Divaan Nand Chand ji was filled with the warrior spirit. He took a group of soldiers and entered the village. He shouted out loud: “loot these people! They loot the Sikhs that travel through here. Take all their stuff to Anandpur.” The soldiers attacked all the homes and looted their pots, pans and clothes. Their clothes, jewellery, cows and horses were all taken away. Whoever tried to stop them was faced with death. The cowards were scolded. Some hid in their homes being scared. Some ran away into the fields and mountains. They did not look back. Some were injured and suffered. Some fainted. Some were drenched in blood. Some were killed with weapons. Some were scared, seeing the Sikhs as Jumms. Divaan ji looted the whole village. The Sikhs ruined the whole village. They were punished for bothering the Sikhs. They won the houses and sounded the Nagara. The cowards were scared. Seeing Guru ji’s glory, the nearby villagers got scared and threw away their pride. They all came to see Guru ji after hearing about Aalsoon. They brought food and sweets for Guru ji and the Sikhs. They brought feed for the animals. They wanted to be saved from Guru ji’s anger. Nobody would be able to protect them. The Sikhs didn’t loot anyone else. They only took food as much as they needed. They didn’t take milk or food in excess. They only looted Aalsoon because they were guilty. There was no other reason. The people of other villages were afraid.
The Sikhs looted Aalsoon and came back to Anandpur. The son of Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji entered the city of Anandpur.
2-44 Anandpur/ the Birth of Sahibzada Jujhar Singh ji
As the people of Anandpur heard about Satguru ji coming back home, they were filled with joy. They went ahead to receive him with great respect. They brought many gifts and met him. They were filled with bliss, seeing him. Their lives were a success to see Guru ji. The Ranjit Nagara and napheeryas played and people came towards the sound to see Guru ji. The Sikhs came to see Guru ji and the army, running from their homes. They celebrated in many ways. The women stood in the doorways and showered Guru ji with flowers. Guru ji and the army entered the market. The people saw Guru ji, as the Chakor looks towards the moon. They showered them with flowers. They put garlands of flowers in their necks. Guru ji saw the love in their hearts and blessed the Sangat. His eyes were shaped like a lotus petal which had grace and love in them. He removed the pain of the Sangat. He asked how everyone was and made them happy. The Naqeebs and Bhatts came to sing the glories of Guru ji. They sang the glories of Prabhoo ji and made everyone hear it. Satguru ji entered the fort of Anandpur which was newly made. Many types of houses were made inside the fort. He got off his horse and sat on his big bed. He took of his Shasters and rested them on his pillow. Divaan Nand Chand ji, Purohit Daya Ram ji and his three brothers: Maari Chand ji, Ganga Ram ji, and Gulab Rai ji were with Guru ji. Everyone then took permission to leave. They went to their homes after.
The Army that was with Guru ji that looted Aalsoon, they placed all the loot in their camps and went to eat. They rested the night with peace. Guru ji woke up at Amritvela and took a bath. He did his Nitnem and came to the Sangat when the sun came up. There was a lot of Sangat gathered to see Guru ji. The Sangat that was waiting to see Guru ji, came in the Divaan after they were called by the Mevra. They heard him and were happy. They collected their gifts and went to the court with great enthusiasm. It was as though the thirsty found out that the lake was near by. Guru ji had two Chaurs waiving above him. It was as though the sun’s rays were collected. His Kalgi would sway by the movement of his head. Guru ji was wearing a colourful Dastaar in a unique way. He tied a jigha with precious stones in them. His face was radiant and beautiful. His face was bright. His earring hoops were beautiful. His eyes were sharp, that had respect along with courage and bravery. His black beard was beautiful. His hair was shiny and healthy that looked like darkness around the moon. When he would smile, his teeth would shine like pearls. He looked like Brahma sitting in the court of Devatas in a Padamasana. The Sikhs would see him and be filled with bliss. He looked majestic sitting in the middle of the Sikhs. Everyone siting and standing around him had their hands folded. They were singing his praises with love. Whatever wishes they had in their hearts, Guru ji would fulfill them. Guru ji showered his divine vision all around him. It was as though, Brahma, looking upon his creation, after creating it. When Brahma created the universe, he looked at his creation and admired it. Guru ji sat for 3 hours and then got up. He went to his home and ate food. He ate the delicious food and was delighted. In the afternoon, he laid down to rest. He woke up after a few hours, in the evening at 4pm. He had Shardai with almonds and other material with Shaheedi Degh ground in it. Bhai Aalam Singh ji brought it and gave it to him. Chatterdhaara (opium) from a foreign land was brought for Guru ji to heal his body. Bhai Aalam Singh praised the Chatterdhaara. Guru ji asked for a higher dose by which Bhai Aalam Singh ji asked for a higher quantity from the keeper of the stock. The opium that was expensive, was brought out and given to Guru ji. Guru ji looked at the preparation and took 2 rattee full and put it on his hand. He mixed the opium with Shaheedi Degh and drank it. He went to take a bath after this. After this, Guru ji started to have Chatterdhaara everyday as it would help his body heal and rest his ripped muscles. This preparation was only for warriors and not for householders. Addiction to liquor ruins a person’s 7 generations. Marijuana addiction ruins the body; tobacco ruins a person 100 generations and nindya (slandering/back-biting) ruins a person’s many 100,000 generations. But warriors have a different lifestyle that use these substances for their health.
After a few days, one day, Mata Jeeto ji, the chaste woman, came to her husband in solitude. Guru ji was sitting down and Mata ji was pressing her toe into the ground and had her eyes lowered. She was shy and had the form of her husband in her heart. Only Pativrata women were able to do this. She had love and shyness in her heart. She was the fortunate queen of the world. She was the Mata of the world and Guru ji’s queen. She was the elder queen. She was calm and the mine of virtues. She was humble and wise. Guru ji, the omniscient one, knew what was in her heart. He said to her: “how are the householders? What is in your heart? Ask for what you want. Tell me what you would like. It will be granted. Say it without shyness.” Mata Jeeto ji folded her hands and said: “Prabhoo ji, you are omniscient. You are the Guru of the universe and know what’s in every heart. The Sangat from every direction have their wishes fulfilled. From the ocean to the land, they all worship your feet. You fulfill everyone’s wishes but your treasury does not deplete in any way. You give your Sikhs according to what they need. The woman’s bodily needs, you already know. My sister, Sundri, received a son from you. I wish to be blessed with a warrior son. Without sons, the house is empty. I will be happy when there is a light in the house. Just as a deva makes the darkness go away, a son would enlighten my life. The sun makes the world happy. Please give me a son like the sun. The moon dispels the darkness as well.” Guru ji said to Mata Jeeto ji: “If you wish to receive a son, then serve the Sikhs. Make them Langar with humility. Make different types of foods for the Sangat. You will get everything from the Sangat. All wishes are fulfilled by serving the Sikh Sangat. If you serve them with happiness, you will get all the happiness in the universe.” Mata ji was happy to hear this and started to make Langar, right away. She asked the servants to help her make different foods. She fed the Sikhs, Sadhoos and Saints. She had the wish of a son in her heart and wanted to make Guru ji happy. She made new delicacies. Every day she would bring water to wash the feet of the Sikhs. She took fans and waived them over the Sangat. She would give food to Guru ji as well. Mata Jeeto ji was the queen of queens. Guru ji was extremely happy with her. On a Sunday, during the night, he came to Mata Jeeto Ji’s home and fulfilled her wishes. Soon, she was pregnant. The fortunate Mata Jeeto ji was happy and always had Guru ji’s form in her mind. Day and night, her love for her husband grew. The Sahibzada grew in her womb and Mata ji became radiant. Her light grew like the light phase of the moon.
The house in which Mata Jeet ji lived in was very special. She did Simran all the time. The time passed and Mata ji was ready to give birth. Mata Gujri ji started to celebrate. It was Chet (March/April) Sudhi 7, Tuesday, 1747 (Vikram) 1690 CE, Sahibzada Jujhar Singh ji was born. Many midwives served Mata ji and many Divas were lit. There was a great celebration with happiness everywhere. Many shehnais and vaajas were played. Mata Gujri ji celebrated in many ways. She gave donations to the beggars. There was a great crowd in Anandpur. Everyone wished for the Sahibzada a long life. Guru ji gave a lot of money to Raagis and others. People sang the praises of Guru ji. They all went to Mata Gujri ji to congratulate her. The beggars gave her pieces of grass as a sign of good omen. Garlands of flowers were tied around the house. Pearl strands with golden wires were hung on the doors. The traditions of the Sodhis were carried out. Mata Gujri ji was happy to see her second grandson.
After winning the first battle of Bhangaani, the first son was named “Sahibzada Ajit Singh ji.” Now, the second battle, the battle of Nadhaun was won and the second son was born. Satguru ji thought in his heart to name the second son “Jujhar Singh ji.”
2-45 The Radiance of Sri Guru ji
When the family heard the name “Jujhar Singh,” the family was really happy. Baba Ajit Singh ji would be dressed in jewellery that would clank together when he played. Satguru ji now had two Sahibzadas. Mata Gujri ji was really happy to see them play together. She would dress them with new clothes and jewellery. She would put a black dot on them to avoid the evil eye. Bhai Chaupa Singh ji and all the servants would play with them. The Sangat and the Masands were really happy to hear of the Sahibzada’s birth. The Sangat would bring gold and gifts for the new Sahibzada. They would get the jewellery made by the best goldsmiths. They got many types of clothes to make Guru ji happy. Kalgidhar ji arranged for great celebrations. Anandpur was in bliss.
Vaisakhi was a great celebration every year. The Sangat from every direction would come. Guru ji would wear jewellery, fasten his weapons along with his Kalgi and sit on a high throne just like Ram Chander ji would sit in his court. Beautiful gifts would come to him. The Sangat would place them and fold their hands. They would ask for peace from both worlds. They would come to see Guru ji with faith and devotion. Some asked for a good spouse and some asked for children. They would do ardaas with great love, standing up. Some would ask for good health and some would ask for Bhagti and Gyaan of the Aatma. Thousands would come to see Guru ji. Their wishes were all being fulfilled. They would then go to their homes after seeing Guru ji. In every direction, they would sing the praises of Guru ji. They would go to their villages and tell their families and friends about the glory of Satguru ji. Some came to see Guru ji and stayed with him forever to serve him. They served his feet. The Sangat came to meet the Sahibzadas and played with them. They picked them up in their laps and bowed to their feet. Mata Gujri ji was raising her grandsons and wanted the best for them. She would feed them herself. Looking at their faces she would be happy. She wanted her son to have a big family. This would give her joy. Baba Ajit Singh ji would run around the house. His jewellery would make noises as he walked. Mata Gujri ji would come close to the little ones but they would run away. Mata Sundri ji would dress her son and saw that the whole world bowed to her son. She would raise him with great care by giving him yoghurt and rice to make him strong. She would give him ground almonds to drink. When Baba Ajit Singh ji would go to see his father, he would see the Sangat bow to him and so he would bow in the same way. He would play around like children do and make the Sangat happy. Baba Jujhar Singh ji was small and was taken care of by the mothers and the servants. His body was getting bigger by the day. The Sahibzadas would visit the Sangat. The Sangat would bow to them. They would make the Sangat laugh and laugh out loud themselves.
When Guru ji looted Aalsoon, the 22 Pahari Rajas got really scared of Guru Sahib. A deep chill hit their hearts, that their kingdom can be taken away from them any time. Some of the Rajas came to Guru ji and asked for forgiveness. They brought gifts for him. They realized that Guru ji was all-powerful. Some Rajas came themselves and some sent their ministers. Theirs sins would be washed away as they came to see Guru ji. They brought many types of gifts for Guru ji. They wanted to keep peace with Guru ji. The most unique items from the mountains were sent to Guru ji. The ones that kept a good relation with Guru ji, Guru ji reciprocated the sentiment. Guru ji would bless them and keep diplomatic relations as Guru ji was well versed with politics. Some Rajas kept jealousy in their hearts. Those Rajas stayed alert from Guru ji. They kept their armies ready with weapons and horses. They wouldn’t let their armies sleep. They were alert all the time and ready to face Guru ji in war.
Some atheists lived in Anandpur as well. They were like the bamboo near the sandalwood that did not pick up the scent of the Guru’s glory. They were always scared of war. They left Anandpur and went to other cities. People saw them and laughed at their lack of faith. Wherever those people went, they didn’t find any work. They tried many things but Guru ji was upset with them and they lost in both worlds. They became poor here and couldn’t even beg. They were taken by jumms when they died. They stayed in hell and suffered pain, the ones who broke away from Guru ji. Their friends became their enemies. Wherever they would fasten a rope, the ropes would become snakes and bite them; where they tried to grab gold, the gold would become dirt. They would run away from Guru ji thinking they would be safe but in reality, they would be in pain. Devi Devatas would no longer give them happiness. Just as everyone wants to kill a thief, the ones who left Anandpur were not respected by anyone. They stayed hungry and worried. They were tired of wandering. They came back to Anandpur eventually. They were scared. They re-settled after being shameless. They began to work in the Guru’s house and got food again. Years passed and the thieves were killed.
Guru ji’s glory grew and the sinners died. Sometimes the army would grow. People would come to do Seva in Anandpur and stay for a few months. Some would go back home to see their houses and then come back. Sometimes the soldiers would take leave and go home. If Guru ji would have conflicts, the enemies would call a truce. Guru ji would go hunting, playing Nagaras. He would hunt to his heart’s delight. When the Nagaras would play and the bullets would sound, the villagers would come out and give Langar and feed. The ones that would give, they were protecting themselves by coming under Guru ji’s protection. The ones that were arrogant and didn’t give anything, not meeting Guru ji, they would be given a beating. The army would take their milk and goats, along with wood and grass. There was nothing they could do. They would yell behind them and then the Singhs would beat them up. In this way, Guru ji’s glory spread among the Paharis. Everyone was afraid of Guru ji. The Sangat was growing by the day who came to see Guru ji and receive happiness.
Vaisakhi and Diwali were celebrated in Anandpur. Sangat would come from every direction and have their wishes fulfilled. They brought clothes, jewellery, money and horses, along with weapons. They would place them at Guru ji’s feet and do Ardaas. Some only did Ardaas in their minds and some would say it out loud. All their wishes would be fulfilled. They would fall in love with the Guru’s feet. Some would receive great wisdom from Guru ji. They would spend time in Satsangat and do Seva with love. Guru ji would be happy with them. The Sikhs would receive powers as well. Some would be connected with Brahmgyaan. They would see friend and foe alike. They saw Akaal Purakh in all. They rejected the many colours of Maya and connected with Guru ji. They crossed the world ocean, achieving many Riddhis and siddhis. They were in bliss, these countless fortunate Sikhs. The ones that did Guru ji’s Seva were fortunate.
