Rut 1.46- 1.51

1-46 Choosing a place near the Shores of the Jamuna

The Nagara sounded and it was time to go.  The horses were saddled and the whole Vaheer was ready.  The Raja of Nahn was ready as well.  The Raja prepared the required items for the hunt.  Mounted on his horse, the Raja came to the giver of Mukti.  He bowed to the feet of Guru Gobind Singh ji.  Guru ji mounted Neela and clasped his heals, telling the horse to go forward.  The Nagaras sounded and the mountains shook with the echo.  The jungles had great green trees.  Guru ji began to hunt deer with his guns.  The animals that were struck by Guru ji could not escape, as his aim was perfect.  There were many trees at the foot of the mountain ranges.  The bodh and pipal trees had deep green leaves.  There were trees of Baheda, Amla and Haded.  Great big trees of Tineekh and ambaltaas; khair, bananas, jamun, tahli, kadumb, mangoes, and other fruit trees.  The trees were full of fruit and moving to the sway of the wind.  They were standing in lines.  The wind would blow and the leaves of the different trees would meet on the ground like people from different races gathering together.  There were peach, pomegranate, plaas, tendu and avnoosh and udhaalik, trees standing nice and tall.  The wind was pleasant and picked up the smell from the different plants.

The jasmine flowers were in full bloom with other colourful flowers.  The leaves and flowers were so high that they couldn’t be reached from the ground.  The bijora trees seemed to be joined at the top.  When the wind would come, the trees would present their fruits to it.  There were peacocks, pigeons and cuckoos singing.  The parrots sang their own songs along with papeehas.  The animals of the jungle only stayed in the jungle.  The males and females were with each other, singing in loud pitches.  They would turn their hands to each other as they sang.  The animals live in peace and eat the fruits from the trees to their hearts’ content.  The bees would hum around the flowers with love in their hearts.  The deer would stay in their herd and jump as they run.  The vultures and barasingas (12 pointer deer) along with tigers and bears were in great quantities.  Elephants would see the female elephants and blow their trunks to impress their mate.  The wild bore with great big hoofs and tusks would be seen.  Many rabbits had made their burrows in the grounds.  The horns of the 12-pointer deer were majestically tall.  Their bodies were lean and strong, from the great diet of the jungle.  The teeters and bateras were in the deep jungles where human would not go.

The Raja of Nahn, Medni Parkash, showed Guru ji his area as they hunted.  He wanted Guru ji’s presence to bless his land.  They travelled far and deep into the region.  They made conversation.  The Raja said to Guru ji: “Guru ji, wherever you see fit, you may set up your living area.  Please find a place which is cool in the summer and warm in the winter.  The whole land is yours; I just want you to point to the place and I will have your house made.  Where ever you reside, there will be a beautiful city that will be established there.”  Medni Prakash showed Guru ji the mountains and the valleys but Guru ji did not pick a spot yet.  They travelled and travelled and eventually reached a spot where the Jamuna flowed.  Its waters were fresh and blue.  Guru ji saw the river and was extremely happy.  The river made the area more beautiful.  There were less people living there.  Everyone loved the place, as there was greenery and the blue river.  It was a blissful place.  The Jamuna, the daughter of the sun, the washer of sins; those who visit the Jamuna everyday, they receive mukti.  If someone touches its waters once, they are purified.  Those who drink its waters, they are freed from the messengers of death at their time of departure.  Jamuna had touched the feet of Krishan ji.  Krishan ji was clever and cheated Kaaljaman; but his mind was still.  Jamuna was forever blessed by touching the Lord’s feet.  It is always flowing in the direction of the ocean.  It was beautiful and majestic in this area.  Guru ji and his soldiers, along with Medni Prakash travelled for many miles along the shores of the Jamuna.  Guru ji loved nature and adored the waters of the Jamuna.  In some places the current was fast and in some places it was calm.  There were whirlpools in some areas with suds.  The waves were high.  The horses and elephants would be seen playing in its waters.  The flow was washing the rocks at its shores and eating away at its boundaries of dirt.  There were alligators and fish in some places.  Guru ji saw everything.  He wanted to see where a city could be established.  He was looking for flat land and for areas of the Jamuna where people may drink and bathe.  The people who knew the area would advise Guru ji of places where the river was deep or shallow.  There were majestic boulders around trees older than a thousand years.  Guru ji finally saw a place which caught his eye.  Guru ji pointed and said: “this is where a city will be established.  This place gives joy to my heart.”  Guru ji loved the shores of the Jamuna.  Guru ji continued: “look, you can see the Jamuna from miles, standing here.”  Guru ji showed Medni Parkash.  He went close to the Jamuna and stopped his horse.  There was a Bodh tree there.  He tied his horse to the tree.  He got off his horse and the Raja signalled his servants to lay the mats.  A bed was laid for Guru ji with red pillows.  Guru ji sat down under the Bodh tree and said to Medni Parkash: “out of your whole area, this place stole my heart.  I like this place to build a home and establish a new city.  The Jamuna flows nice here; the majestic view of the mountains and greenery all around makes this place ideal to live.  There is no mud here.  The valley is beautiful.”  Medni Parkash folded his hands and said: “Guru ji, you truly are omniscient who knows the hearts of all.  I had thought about this area and hoped you would like it too.  This is the boundary of my kingdom.  Raja Fateh Shah’s area is across the other side.  Our kingdoms have had many battles and been in conflict with each other for many generations.  This is the place we have had those battles.  Our area is called Saar Mohr and Fateh Shah’s area is known as Teeri Garhwal.  Fateh Shah is a more powerful king.  He is richer than I am and has a bigger army.  His area is larger than ours.  He is proud about being a stronger king than me and for this reason, he attacks us.  He is egotistical.  His ancestors have tried to supress my ancestors.  We have fought to protect our area.  This conflict is still ongoing.  I had prayed in my heart that: since Fateh Shah had the blessing of Baba Ram Rai, I wanted the blessing of a saint too.  You, all powerful Guru ji, answered my prayers and came to bless me.  This is the place I wanted you to live and you chose this place.  If you would live at the border, I will be free from fear for my country.  Now that you have decided to live here, I know that you are with me and I am no longer in danger.”  Guru ji heard Medni Prakash’s pain and responded: “don’t worry, till I am here, no person with two heads can stand in front of me.  I will put my arrows through their whole body and destroy their armies on the battlefield.  Fateh Shah is nothing, if Aurangzeb comes, I will discolour his glory as well.”  Guru ji blessed Medni Prakash with fearlessness: “live in peace and fear no one.  Don’t worry and do not tolerate other’s bullying.”

Guru ji conversed with Medni Prakash.  Medni Prakash was now fearless and in bless.  The Vaheer of Guru ji with his family arrived after the message was sent.  The saints, Udaasis and the family of Guru ji set up camp there.  Horses were tied and camps were set up.  The area was open and free.  A great canopy was hung which had Zarri tassels and pearl strands.  The ropes were made of silk and pulled from all four sides.  Many tents were set up.  A long rope was set up to tie all the horses together in a line.  The generals of Guru ji’s army set up their tents.  Guru ji’s tent was beside the Jamuna.  Medni Parkash saw that there were Sikhs reading Gurbani everywhere and Langar was being cooked.  The Raja asked for permission to go home.  Everyone slept in the tents.

Guru ji woke up at 2 am and bathed in the Jamuna for the first time.  As the sun came up, Medni Prakash came to see Guru ji.  He bowed to Guru ji and sat down.  He made conversations with Guru ji.  Whenever Guru ji would ask Medni Prakash a question, he would respond with his hands folded.  Guru ji asked the Raja: “listen Raja, the way of politics says that since we have soldiers, war always follows them.  Soldiers are lions.  We will fight the enemies and help our friends.  War is inevitable now that Fateh Shah knows I am here with soldiers.  We need a fort for the safety of the army.  We can only win a battle if we have a fort.”  Raja Medni Prakash said: “Guru ji, I wont delay.  I was waiting for your permission.  My whole army and the people of my country will all come.  Every man, woman, and child will work on your fort.  If you give us the signal, I will get the craftsmen and tradesmen started right away.  I will command all the tradesmen to come.  My army will help.  It will be with your blessing.  We will make your home and a fort.  I am not afraid of anyone any more.  If you weren’t here, Fateh Shah would never let me build a fort.”  Medni Prakash got the command to build the fort of Paonta Sahib.  He sent commands to his whole country and collected all the tradesmen.  Everyone came in the thousands to build the fort.  They were to cut the rocks, prepare the mortar and transport the rocks.  Many labourers came to earn money.  Some came just to do Seva of Guru ji and did not want any money.  There were thousands of people in Paonta Sahib and Langar was made and served to everyone.  There was no shortage in the Langar.  The fort was ready in 12 days because there were so many people.  Houses were built for Guru ji and his family.  Guru ji stayed for 4 years and wrote a lot of his Gurbani here.

1-47 Founding the City of Paonta

People from all around the area came and there was a big crowd near the shore of the Jamuna.  Everyone was working on the fort and the houses.  There was joy all around the jungle along the shores of the Jamuna.  Guru ji has happy and the land of Nahn was blessed.  Guru ji wanted to make a fort.  The Raja was waiting for Guru ji’s command.  Guru ji gave a command: “prepare Karah Prashaad for 1000 Rajitpuns here.”  The Sevadaars came hearing Guru ji’s command and prepared Karah Prashaad in huge pots.  It was prepared with the proper traditions and brought to Guru ji.  The Ardaasia did the Ardaas from Guru Nanak Dev ji to Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji, as everyone stood.  He said “the Tenth Paatshaah is about to make a fort.  Please give us the blessing in completing this task without disturbance.”  The Ardaasia completed the Ardaas and everyone bowed.  The Karah Prashaad was then distributed.  It was received with respect and people bowed before eating it.  Guru ji then got up along with Medni Prakash and his ministers.  Guru ji measured the land with the craftsmen, directing them on how big to make the fort.  It needed to be able to fit thousands of warriors and horses as well.  Guru ji told them to make windows for warriors to be able to post their guns through it.  There needed to be places for setting cannons and archers to stand, to be able to aim in all directions.  Guru ji said the name of Guru Nanak Dev ji and placed the first brick.  It was his first fort being built.  After that, thousands of people started to work.  Stones were brought from the mountains and shaped.  The Mortar was prepared and added.  There were so many people that it seemed as there was a battle going on.  Some carried mud on top of their heads, some carried stones.  It seemed as though Ram Chander ji was building the bridge from India to Lanka.  There was so much noise as the people worked.  The supervisors directed the labourers.  There were hundreds of supervisors as well, who told everyone what to do.  Guru ji would come see the work in the morning and then in the evening.  He would encourage and praise the work of the tradesmen and other Sikhs.  Raja Medni Prakash’s soldiers and subjects were assisting.  The Sangat of the Guru was working with love and devotion.  The Raja’s soldiers and Guru ji’s soldiers all worked on the fort.  The five cousins of Guru ji (Sango Shah, Maari Chand, Jeet Mal, Ganga Ram and Gulab Rai) were helping as well.  The senior Masands were helping along with Devan Nand Chand.  The Devan was in charge of the treasury so he was giving out the salaries.  Raja Medni Prakash was giving money as well.  The Langar was made for everyone and made from the Guru’s treasuries, as per the tradition.

The fort was progressing well.  The work would start right after Asa Di Vaar, everyday.  The Langar was continuous.  Everyone got gourmet foods and ate as much as they wanted.  Guru ji would stay with the Raja and observe the whole project.  Medni Prakash would give his input for forts as well.  Guru ji had studied warfare and fort constructions and directed the project according to those plans.  The fort was being constructed quickly.

By the 12th day, the fort was standing.  The outer wall was complete.  It was made of stone and mortar.  The front door was big enough for elephants and camels to pass through.  The walls were solid, as well as the front doors.  They made it in a way that the enemy will not be able to get to the door.  The archers would be able to aim far.  The fort had enough room for thousands of people.  When the fort was ready, the Raja came to Guru ji.  The Raja was happy to see the fort and said: “I am now worry-free of anyone attacking us.  The fort is ready.  There was always a dispute for this land between us and Fateh Shah.  Now we are blessed by you.”  He sat next to Guru ji’s feet.  Guru ji read his heart and said: “Raja Medni Parkash.  Till I am in this fort, nobody will be able to look towards you.  There is no warrior that dare look upon you with bad intention.  I won’t let anyone set foot here.  Whoever comes, they will die.  Go to your palace and rest.  The protection of your kingdom is with me.  Go and be fearless.  You had faith in the Guru and therefore you will be protected.  Keep the faith and devotion in your heart forever.  I will protect you in both worlds and remove your hurdles and sins.”  The Raja folded his hands and said: “I have full faith in you Guru ji.  This was the reason why I asked you to come.  My wishes have been fulfilled by you.  Now that a fort has been made at the border, I am not afraid anymore.  Your radiance is great Guru ji and is spread everywhere in the world.”  Guru ji gave the Raja confidence and the Raja recognized Guru ji as Akaal Purakh’s Avatar.  He would serve Guru ji, folding his hands.  He would come sit with Guru ji for hours and go with Guru ji for hunts.  The Raja knew the area well, so he would guide the hunting party.  They would hunt many animals with hawks, dogs and other hunting animals.  They would hunt deer, lions and bears.  Kalgidhar ji was very happy.  Medni Parkash would show Guru ji the jungles.  At night time, Guru ji would stay inside the fort and listen to Rehraas Sahib.  The Raja would listen to Gurbani.  The Raja began to stay in Paonta and made sure everything was provided for everyone.

He stayed with Guru ji for a few days and wished to back to Nahn.  He wanted to ask for permission but Guru ji already knew.  As he came to bow, he spoke to Guru ji: “Guru ji you are now staying close to me and now that you are here, I know that my enemies will now be destroyed.  Whenever you call for me, I will come as soon as possible.  This is your city, house and fort.  Your Sangat will come.  Please give me permission to go.”  Guru ji gave Medni Parkash a very expensive Siropa.  Medni Parkash took the Siropa and put it on top of his head.

Raja Medni Parkash returned to Nahn with the assurance that Guru ji was protecting him.  Guru ji had settled in Paonta Sahib and the news spread within the Sangat.  Everyone found out that Guru ji left Anandpur and founded a new city along the shores of the Jamuna.  The Sangat then began to come to Paonta Sahib.  The young men looking to enlist into Guru ji’s army began to come to Paonta Sahib.  The army grew by the day.  Any warrior, Hindu or Muslim was allowed and their salary was set on a six-month basis.  They were assigned a regiment.  The army was great by now and they all did target practice with guns.  In the valleys between the mountain, the guns sounded and people started talking up to Delhi.  They all said: “looks like the Guru will start a battle.  Guru ji made his army bigger and hunted everyday with guns.”  The warriors were paid well.  Many people came to be blessed in this world and in the next.  Some days there were 20 and on some, 25 came to join.  The features of their faces were written down as they were enlisted.  Many merchants selling horses would come to sell their horses.  Guru ji would buy the horses and pay good money for them.  The horses were for the soldiers.  The strongest steeds were specially picked.  Guru ji would enlist anyone that came and would pay everyone with his own hands.  He would converse with the soldiers as well.  Paonta Sahib was like heaven on Earth with the presence of nature.  The Sikhs would bathe in the Jamuna and read Gurbani along the shores.  There was no shortage of grass for the horses and fire wood.  The Sangat would come in great numbers.  Guru ji would hold court with a lot of Kirtan in various Raags.  The Sangat would bring high-quality Shasters and horses.  Guru ji would give the weapons and horses to his soldiers.  Sangat would also bring expensive clothes which he would give to his soldiers as well.  Guru ji would fulfil everyone’s wishes.  Thousands had gathered.  Sangat would come and go daily, singing Gurbani.  Some would come and then stay with Guru ji after meeting him.  They would decide to stay with Guru ji for the rest of their lives.  Their wishes would be fulfilled.

On the other side of Nahn, there was a city called Srinagar, the capital of Garhwal.  Fateh Shah was the king.  Guru ji was staying at the border of both.  The Guru’s Paon (foot) had settled here, and therefore it was named: “Paonta Sahib.”  The world came to know the name of this place as Paonta Sahib.

1-48 Devan Nand Chand and Purohit Daya Ram go to Baba Ram Rai

As Guru ji had the fort constructed, the army began to grow.  There was now double the army as there was in Anandpur.  They would all hunt and practice Shaster vidya everyday.  The ones with love in their hearts were happy to see the Sangat and army grow.  The ones that doubted the Guru, they were scared to see Guru ji’s glory.  The villagers within the range of 60 km of Paonta Sahib would come together and discuss: “Guru Gobind Singh ji is a very powerful warrior.  Nobody can go close to him or stand the rain of his arrows.  No Dal or strength can face the Guru’s might.”  In this way, the praises of Guru ji’s chivalry spread.

The praise eventually reached Dehradun to Baba Ram Rai.   He leaved about 60 km from Paonta Sahib, in Dehradun (Dehra Baba Ram Rai).  His Sangat would come to see him and worship him, regarding him as a son of the Guru.  They would come and bow to him bringing him gifts.  Baba Ram Rai’s Masand would spread his praises and bring Sangat to Dehradun.  They would collect money from lands a far and bring it to Ram Rai.  Aurangzeb left Delhi and went to the south, after the Shaheedi of Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji.  Shaheed Bhai Mati Das ji’s soul would bother him at night and made it difficult for Aurangzeb to live in Delhi.  So, he had to leave.  As Aurangzeb left, Baba Ram Rai came to Dehradun from Delhi (Majnu da Tilla).  The Emperor and Raja Fateh Shah gave the deed to the land to Baba Ram Rai.  He also collected the Jageer (tax allotment) for those areas.  Baba Ram Rai showed his powers to the people of the area and made them do his pooja.  Many were impressed by his powers and became his followers.  He had many sadhus and Fakirs living with him.  He also had a small regiment of armed soldiers, as per the tradition started by his great-grandfather, Guru Hargobind Sahib ji.  Baba Ram Rai would keep armed guards but he was not a keen practitioner of Shaster Vidya.  He was more towards the saintly lifestyle.  He heard of Kalgidhar ji’s coming to Paonta.  He heard that he was his Chacha (father’s younger brother/cousin) and that he was a great and powerful warrior.  He heard that Guru Gobind Singh ji was a master archer.  He heard that his arrows would go through people and go far for many miles.  Everyone was afraid of Guru Gobind Singh ji’s arrows.  Even Bheem Chand backed down from war, fearing the Guru’s arrows.  No other saint or being could match the holy powers he had either.  He plays Dhundhabs, Nagaras and goes to hunt.  The Rajas fear him so much that nobody could say anything to him.  Baba Ram Rai got scared of Guru Gobind Singh ji.  He didn’t want the family conflict to become a reason for Guru ji to attack him.  He was afraid that he would be killed by the Guru.  He didn’t have an army or warriors.  The Guru was young, strong, powerful, and very strong.  He knew that Guru ji was the Guru and therefore more powerful than him.

Baba Ram Rai spoke to his Masand, Bhai Gurdas (the son of Bhai Behlo, Sikh of Guru Arjan Dev ji).  When Guru Har Rai Sahib ji was asked to come to Delhi, Guru ji sent his son Baba Ram Rai ji to Delhi, sending many Masands along with him.  Since then, Bhai Gurdas was with Baba Ram Rai by Guru ji’s command.  Baba Ram Rai would take advice from Bhai Gurdas.  Baba Ram Rai gathered all his Masands and told them what his worry was: “Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji is a determined person.  He is a warrior like my great-grandfather.  Some people told me that he is stricter than my great-grandfather.  He has a great army and has come to reside close by.  We have a family conflict.  I hope he doesn’t get angry and attack me.  If he comes to attack me, who can defend us?  He is a master archer and his arrows are like snakes.  When he shoots arrows, they go miles into the distance.  Is there any warrior that can face him?  I am not at ease knowing he is close by.  I think we should leave Dehradun and go somewhere else.  If we go away from here, we will be safe.  Our home will be safe.  When the Guru leaves, we will come back here.”  Listening to Baba Ram Rai, Bhai Gurdas spoke: “don’t be afraid.  Stay here in your home.  Don’t lose your peace.  My brother Tara Chand is a great warrior.  He can face the Guru.  Tara Chand is a great archer.  Just as Guru Gobind Singh’s arrows are praised, my brother’s arrows are praise-worthy as well.  I don’t believe the Guru will attack, but if he does, my brother and I will defend our area.  Both of you are from the same family, so I don’t think there will be a fight.  I don’t think your Chacha will attack you.  He is wise and he is the Guru, he wouldn’t do such a thing.  You are his nephew; he wouldn’t fight you and make the Sangat feel bad.  If you think that he will fight, then my brother Tara Chand will face his arrows.  We won’t let Dehradun be ruined.  So have hope and don’t be scared.  If we see that they are putting pressure, then we will leave at night.  There is no point to leave now.  We will show our Shaster Vidya and see his as well, if need be.  Let’s not leave home for this reason.  People will take bad about us.  The Sangat that comes here will lose faith and not bring money anymore.”  Baba Ram Rai felt a little better.  He wasn’t fully at east though.  He feared Guru Gobind Singh ji.  He began to keep more soldiers and bought more guns and bows and arrows.  Ram Rai stopped hunting and going out.  He placed his men around the area to keep watch of any Guru ji’s soldiers coming his way.  He sent people to Paonta to see what news there was.  They would come back and tell Ram Rai.  They would say: “Guru ji stayed on his Singhasan today; today Guru ji went for hunt; this is how many soldiers he has; this is what he said today in his court.”  They would bring back all the news from Paonta Sahib to Baba Ram Rai.  Ram Rai would collect the information and after a while he stopped being scared.

Guru Gobind Singh ji, the omniscient, the omnipresent, the full Avatar of Akal Purakh, the gracious one, knew exactly what his nephew was thinking.  He knew that his nephew was worried and wanted to relieve him of his worries.  After all, he was his nephew, his own blood.  Guru ji told Nand Chand to go to Dehradun along with Pandit Daya Ram ji: “go to Dehradun and send Baba Ram Rai a message before you reach that: Sri Kalgidhar ji is gracious, and that both of you would like to meet him.  Tell him that Guru ji sent the both of us.  Tell him before-hand that you are coming so that he doesn’t think you are going to attack him.”

Baba Ram Rai received the letter written by Devan Nand Chand and was very happy.  He received both Nand Chand ji and Purohit Daya Ram ji and had them sit close to him.  They both bowed to Baba Ram Rai and told him about Guru Gobind Singh ji: “Guru ji has sent us to ask how you are doing.  You are dear to him as you are his nephew.  He does not want you to worry at all.  He is gracious.  We are from the same house.  There is no difference between us.  Don’t keep any worry in your heart.  We request you to write Guru ji a letter asking about each others wellness.  He will be happy to read your letter.  Don’t have any difference.  Don’t be worried.  Guru ji sends his blessings.  He is great and his greatness is blissful.  He blesses all.  Guru ji is your Chacha and is also the one who sits on Guru Nanak Dev ji’s throne.  Don’t keep any opposition in your heart towards him.”  Pandit Daya Ram ji spoke to Baba Ram Rai: “Baba ji, I am the Purohit of the Sodhis.  I live with Guru ji but I am your family Purohit as well.  There should not be a conflict within the same family.  Guru ji doesn’t harbour any conflict.  I want to assure you that you should sleep fearless and worry-free.  Your Thaya Dheermal has no patience.  I tried to assure him as well, but he didn’t listen.  He burns in the fire of jealousy and wants to be the Guru.  He can’t stand the glory of Guru ji.  You are wise.  I don’t want you to be like him.  Please don’t oppose the Guru.  This conflict is not good.  People talk about this and their faith is broken.  These household matters never solve anything and nothing good ever comes from it.  Jealousy is bad.  You should meet Guru ji with love.  Your fear will go away.  Guru ji would never think bad of you.  You should be one.  Both will live in peace.”  Baba Ram Rai was finally at peace listening to Pandit Ram Rai ji.  His mind then wished to see Guru ji.  He said to Pandit ji: “Listen Purohit Daya Ram ji: I will do as you say.  Until we don’t meet each other, we won’t truly know what is in each other’s minds.  You came today and told me the truth and now our differences will be gone.  My Chachaji is greater in status so it is my duty to go and bow to his feet.  Even though he is younger in age, but he is my father’s brother and therefore, just like my father.  He initiated the re-kindling of our relationship.  I am certain that he will never have ill-intentions for me.  I will do what he says.  Tell him that he shouldn’t consider me to be the same as my Thaya, Dheermal.  I am not like him.”  Pandit Daya Ram and Devan Nand Chand were told that there will be peace in the family.  Baba Ram Rai gave both of the Sikhs a Siropa for coming.  He gave clothes and money for Guru ji and asked them to bow to Guru ji for him.  Both Devan ji and Pandit ji got up.  Devan Nand Chand bowed his head to Baba Ram Rai ji.  Purohit Daya Ram gave Ram Rai his blessing as he was the Family Purohit.  Baba Ram Rai gave Pandit ji money as he left.

Devan Nand Chand ji and Pandit Daya Ram ji mounted their horses and came back to the Paonta Fort.  They rested in their places and slept the night.  In the morning, both woke up and bathed.  They got dressed, donned their weapons and headed to Guru ji’s court.  They went to Guru ji and told Guru ji of their discussion with Baba Ram Rai ji.

1-49 Bhuddu Shah/ Meeting Fateh Shah

Devan Nand Chand ji and Purohit Daya Ram ji approached Guru ji and bowed to his lotus feet and sat down.  Guru ji looked at the both of them and asked: “tell me, how is Baba Ram Rai ji.”  Nand Chand ji and Daya Ram ji said: “Prabhoo ji, you are omniscient and know the deepest secret of every heart.  With your grace, you sent us to Baba Ram Rai and now, his fears and worries are all gone.  His whole city is now at ease.  When we gave Baba Ram Rai ji your message, he calmed down and now wishes to meet you.  He was very happy and said that he will follow your wishes, Guru ji.  He actually didn’t know your intentions and he had cooked up doubts about you.  We found out that he was about to leave his city in fear.  Bhai Behlo’s son Bhai Gurdas gave Baba Ram Rai hope, but even after that, he wanted to leave his home and go somewhere else.  His doubts are now cleared and he wants to meet you in a few days.”  Satguru ji asked: “why was he scared?  He is the son of Guru Har Rai Sahib ji.  He didn’t interfere with us in any way.  He should live without worry.  I won’t say anything to him if he doesn’t do anything bad.”  Guru ji then changed the subject.  The people of Paonta would come to see Guru ji along with people from other lands.  Thousands of people came from all around.  Some came and left but some came and stayed with Guru ji forever.

A distance from Paonta Sahib is settled a city named Sadhora (the village of Sadhoos).  There was a Fakir named Sai Bhuddu Shah that lived there.  He was a great bhagat of Allah.  He did Simran of Akaal Purakh and spent his time with Saints.  He said: “I have found out that Guru ji, the seat of Guru Nanak Dev ji has come close to me.  He is praised by everyone.  He sits on the throne of Guru Nanak Dev ji, who is the protector and master of this universe; and the world beyond.  Whoever he gives great blessings to, they find out the path to Khuddah.”  Sai Bhuddu Shah heard Guru ji’s praises and got ready to visit Guru Gobind Singh ji.  In the whole region, lived his students that followed him.  He called all his students by writing to them.  He wanted all of his students to go see Guru ji along with him.  They all came to Paonta Sahib and set up camp near the Jamuna.  He came to visit Guru ji to find out how to reach Allah.  He came with love and devotion.

Guru ji’s court was in session and Guru ji was seated on his Singhasan.  500 Udaasis, holding malas and doing Simran were on one side.  On the other side, were the warriors of Guru ji including his cousins and nephews.  Devan Nand Chand ji, Mammaji and Daya Ram ji were present as well.  Peer Bhuddu Shah came and bowed his head by placing his gifts.  He saw Guru ji and his heart blossomed.  He couldn’t stop looking at Guru ji.  He had seen the true form of Akaal Purakh.  Guru ji noticed the Peer and recognized his Bhagti.  Guru ji had the Peer sit next to him along with his students.  Guru ji said: “welcome Peer ji.  Where are you from and why have you come?  What is your name?  Tell me about yourself.”  Peer ji heard Guru ji’s words.  He folded his hands and said: “my body belongs to the caste of Syed.  My home is in Sadhora and my name is Bhuddu Shah (Badhroodheen).  I have heard of your praises from many people and wanted to visit you.  You have blessed me to see you.  By your blessing, I have been called to your feet.  I wish to never separate for you now.  I have met you and I do not wish to leave.  I have given you my mind after seeing you.  You are omniscient and I don’t need to say anything.  I am yours now without any trade.  I am your servant.  Keep me in your feet and I do not wish to go anywhere else.  The pains of many births have been washed away for me.  I am now calm.”  Guru ji, the giver of mukti and bhugti heard the sincere words of Peer Bhuddu Shah, and was really pleased.  He blessed him.  Everyone stayed till the court was in session.  Peer Bhuddu Shah stayed the whole time.

After a while, Guru ji got up and went to his home to eat.  The Sangat went home as well.  Satguru ji said to Devan Nand Chand: “the Peer Syed that is here, please see to them that they are taken care of well.  Make sure they are at a good place so that they may rest well.  Send them food.  His students are with him as well, about 200 people.  Send them feed for horses.  They are devoted to the Guru’s house.”  Deevan ji bowed and carried out Guru ji’s instructions.  Devan ji sent food and items of need to Peer Bhuddu Shah and his students.

The next day, Guru ji went hunting in the early morning at the sound of the Nagara.  He went with his hawks and dogs.  The five brothers (Sango Shah, Maari Chand, Jeet Mal, Ganga Ram and Gulab Rai) went with Guru ji.  The soldiers went too.  Guru ji would mount elephants and horses and go into the dense jungle.  Guru ji would go where the lions and bears were.  He hunted deer and wild bore.  He would hunt lions as well.  He would go to the scariest parts of the jungle to hunt.  Guru ji would hunt for 6 hours.  The Ranjit Nagara would sound to miles away in the valleys.  The warriors would make a lot of noise.  Guru ji returned by noon and ate his meal.  He rested for a while.  After getting up, who had Shaheedi Degh and bathed.  People would see Guru ji and his soldiers and sing their praises.

On the other side of Paonta was Srinagar.  The Raja of that area was Raja Fateh Shah.  People would tell Fateh Shah about Guru ji’s radiance and the valour of his army.  “He is a great warrior who hunts lions.  He is the temple of beauty.  We have heard that Kamadeva is very handsome but we haven’t seen him.  There cannot be anyone more handsome than the Guru.  He is young and filled with the warrior spirit but is extremely calm.  He has many powers and can eradicate any pain.”  In this way, people would tell Fateh Shah about Guru Gobind Singh ji.  Fateh Shah heard the praises and wished to see Guru ji.  He mobilized his army and collected clothes, weapons and horses for Guru ji.

Fateh Shah set off to see Guru ji.  He brought many gifts to Paonta Sahib.  He sent his ambassador to notify Guru ji of Fateh Shah’s arrival.  Guru ji had a great court in session when Fateh Shah came with a thousand of his people.  They all bowed.  Guru ji had his Shasters on with his Kalgi.  The Raja’s men were dressed in royal clothes as well.  The Raja sat down and Guru ji asked him: “Raja ji, how are you and how is your country?  Are your people well?  Tell me about your treasures and your family.”  The Raja responded with humility: “everything is well with your blessing Guru ji.”  Guru ji asked Fateh Shah: “how big is your area?”  The Raja told Guru ji everything.  He discussed techniques of hunting and stories they had for each other.  Fateh Shah presented Guru ji clothes, weapons and a very expensive horse.  After a while, the Raja asked Guru ji for permission to leave but Guru Sahib told him to stay longer.  He stopped him from getting on top of his horse and had him set up camp.  Guru ji wanted to have Fateh Shah and Medni Prakash become friends.  They have been fighting for many generations and spilling each other’s blood.  Guru ji wanted to stop that.  At night time, when Fateh Shah stayed, Guru ji sent Mammaji to talk to Raja Fateh Shah.  He asked Mamma Kirpal Chand ji to find out from Fateh Shah: why was he enemies with Medni Prakash.

Mamma Kirpal Chand ji visited Raja Fateh Shah and spoke to him.  Fateh Shah had Mammaji sit near him with respect.  The Raja said: “welcome.”  Mammaji said: “Raja ji, Satguru ji has sent me to you.  He wants to finish the enmity and conflict between you and Raja Medni Prakash.  The hatred leads to nothing.  Fighting gives nothing.  If the Raja of Nahn doesn’t listen, we will take responsibility for him.  He won’t have any hatred or fraud.  We guarantee that.  We will convince him to meet.  We want you to have a meeting to end the conflict.  If you are ready to meet, we can call Medni Prakash to Paonta Sahib in the morning.  He listens to Guru ji with full devotion.  You are wise.  I hope you have faith in the Guru.  Guru ji wishes to end the conflict.”  Fateh Shah heard Mammaji and said: “if Medni Prakash listens to Guru ji, then I will listen to Guru ji as well.  If Guru ji is the mediator, then there won’t be any conflict.”  When Mammaji heard this, he came and told Guru ji everything the same night.  Guru ji told Devan Nand Chand: “go to Nahn in the morning and bring Medni Prakash.  I will have them talk and become friends.”  Guru ji had Fateh Shah looked after well with food and items of need.  At night time, everyone slept and woke up in the morning.

1-50 Meeting between Raja Fateh Shah and Raja Medni Prakash

Devan Nand Chand woke up early before the sun’s light, and left for his 30 km journey towards Medni Prakash’s home.  He reached Nahn and met the Raja.  He said to him: “Guru ji wishes for you to purify your mind and let go of your enmity with Fateh Shah.  Fateh Shah is with Guru ji right now.  He was about to leave but Guru ji stopped him and told me to get you.  Guru ji and Raja Fateh Shah are waiting for you.  Let go of all your thoughts and let Guru ji worry about everything.  You should be worry-free now.  The master is waiting for you.”  Devan ji convinced Medni Prakash on behalf of Guru ji to: let go of the conflict that has carried on for generations, and come along with him to Paonta Sahib.  They mounted their horses and left right away.  Medni Prakash trusted Guru ji but he still took a regiment of selected soldiers along.  Medni Prakash and Devan Nand Chand reached Paonta by evening.  The Raja set up camp on one side of the Jamuna and Fateh Shah’s camp was on the other side.  Guru ji’s soldiers were along the same shore.

Along the Jamuna were many horses due to the three different armies stationed and camped there.  Raja Medni Prakash wanted to go pay his respects to Guru ji first and sent a messenger.  After his request was approved, Medni Prakash went to go see Guru ji and bowed his head to Guru ji’s lotus feet.  He was very happy to see Guru ji.  Sri Kalgidhar ji had him sit down with great respect.  Guru ji spoke to Medni Prakash and gave him the message of Guru Nanak Dev ji in regards to humanity and having love for one another.  He told him to let go of his hatred and ego.  Guru ji wanted them to live in peace and respect for each other.  Medni Prakash responded with his hands folded: “Guru ji, I will obey your every command.  I know that you will only do good for me.  I know that you only have well wishes for me.  Please do as you wish.  Satguru ji then said: “ok Raja ji, in the morning, I will call both of you.  I want you to meet with friendship.  I want you to forget your conflict.  You will be blessed by Guru Nanak Dev ji.  This will be good for you.”  In this way, Medni Prakash was convinced.

Fateh Shah’s men and Medni Prakash’s men were coming to meet Guru Sahib and friendly dialogue between the two armies began.  At night time, everyone slept.  In the morning, Guru ji had the Kabuli tent set up.  The mats and tarps were laid out that were multi-coloured.  In the middle of the tent was Guru ji’s Singhasan.  The Masands were called and told to wear expensive clothes and weapons.  The court was set with the best preparations.  All of the warriors wore expensive clothes with the best golden weapons.  The Dastaars were embedded with gems.  Guru ji completed his Nit Nem and wore a very royal Chola.  He put his Shamshir on and tied his quiver full of arrows.  He placed his bow on his shoulder.  He looked like a lion as he walked into the court.  Everyone got up as soon as Guru ji entered.  Everyone bowed to him with love and devotion as Guru ji sat on top of his Singhasan.  He took off his bow and quiver and placed them on a bed next to his Singhasan.  The Sevadaars waived Chaurs on top of his head and the Chobdhaars stood in attention, holding golden maces.  The court was complete with royal regalia as Kings and ministers were attending the court today.  The Masands were commanded by Guru ji to call Fateh Shah and Medni Prakash.  The Masands went to the two Rajas to summon them.  Both of the Rajas were happy to be called and headed towards Guru ji’s court with their ministers and soldiers.

Both Rajas entered Guru ji’s court and bowed to his feet.  Guru ji welcomed both kings and had them sit on his either side.  Guru ji said: “Raja Fateh Shah, Raja Medni Prakash, get up and hug each other.  Greet each other with love and friendship.  You are face-to-face today after years of fighting.  Your hatred has grown over the years.  I want you to forget the past and meet as friends.”  Both Rajas obeyed and got up.  They hugged each other and discarded their hatred.  They then bowed to Guru ji again.  Their differences were gone and their worries were finished.  They talked to each other with love and friendship.  They looked towards Guru ji and were impressed by him.  Guru ji’s body was very muscular and his radiance was beyond belief.  They talked about hunting lions in their area: “our area is very good for hunting.”  In this way, they talked about politics and weaponry.  Guru ji participated in their discussions as well.  It was a great atmosphere, with men of chivalry and courage talking about their lives and encounters.  For 3 hours, the court was in session with both kings and soldiers.  The Rajas asked for permission to leave and headed towards their camps.

Guru ji got up and had his afternoon meal.  He rested after eating.  After waking up, he had Shaheedi Degh and bathed.  At around 3 pm, Guru ji left for a hunt with both Medni Prakash and Fateh Shah.  They hunted in the jungles.  They hunted deer and many other animals.  In the evening, Guru ji gave the signal to return back to Paonta Sahib.  On the way, a resident of the mountains ran towards Guru ji and shouted out: “Prabhoo ji, there is a very dangerous lion in our area.  Our whole area knows about it.  He is ferocious and no one is able to hunt it down.  That lion kills our cows and buffalos.  The lion has killed people too.  The lion was gone for a few months but now it has returned to our mountains.  It is ferocious and dangerous.”  The Rajas and Guru ji heard the person’s plea.  Seeing how it was evening, Guru ji said: “there is no time to hunt it now as it is almost night time.  In the morning, we will all go with you to where you saw the lion last.”  Both Raja’s agreed with Guru ji’s words and said: “Guru ji, we will go with you and see how you hunt the lion.  We will surely assist you in killing the lion as that lion bothers our subjects.”  The person went with the hunting party back to Paonta Sahib.  As they headed back, they all talked about their pervious hunts involving lions.  Guru ji would talk about his grandfather’s hunts when he held a lioness with his foot and killed it with his sword.  The soldiers walked with the three as they all travelled to Paonta.  Everyone went to their camps.  Everyone was thinking about the lion.  Fateh Shah and Medni Prakash thought about fighting the lion.  They said: “we will battle with a lion tomorrow morning.”  Everyone ate and went to sleep.

In the morning they woke up, did their Nit Nems and/or poojas and got ready.  Guru ji had the Ranjit Nagara played in the morning.  Everyone heard the Nagara and saddled their horses.  The Rajas got ready and mounted their horses with their own soldiers.  The warriors donned their sword, shields, spears and guns.  Guru ji wore a very expensive Kalgi.  The jewellery on his radiant body was shining.  He wore a sword with a golden hilt and an edge so sharp, that an ant could not walk on it.  He tied a shield to his side and a quiver to his shoulder.  He placed his bow on the other shoulder and mounted an elephant this day.  Guru ji waited for the Rajas.  As the Rajas came, they hunting party set off.  They took the mountain dweller along with them.  The hunting party went into the thick of the jungle.  There was a long line of soldiers behind them.  They began to look for the lion.  There were thousands of soldiers.  The mountain dweller directed Guru ji towards the lion.  They had entered very deep into the jungle.  There were hills and rivers.  They killed wild bore and the animals were running around.  There were many thorny plants with trees.  The branches were intertwined between the trees.  There were trees of cheerh and saal.  There were bushes of baireeya, khair and karunjooa.  They walked slowly through the branches and looked for the lion.  The mountain dweller knew the area well and said: “look Guru ji, I see the lion’s footprints.  These footprints are fresh.  It means he just walked this path.  We must now be extra vigilant.  He can kill anyone or any animal at any time now.  He is very big.  He stretches 14 feet when fully extended.”  Both of the Rajas were on either side of Guru ji.  Guru ji was moving forward with great patience and awareness.  They walked through the dense jungle.  They soon reached some open land and saw very thorny bushes.  There was a beheda bush there.  Under that thorny bush, they finally spotted the lion.  The lion was sleeping under the spiky bush with not a worry in the world.  He was sleeping after a great meal that he had hunted.  As the footsteps of the horses made noise, the lion woke up and roared.  The roar echoed like thunder throughout the valley and the mountains.  He got up to see who had entered his domain.  Guru ji stopped his elephant and saw the great big lion.  There was never a lion bigger that it.  The lion looked around and made eye contact with some of the soldiers as he stood there.  The lion’s teeth and claws were sharp and curved.  Its mane was wide and thick.  Its eyes were red as blood.  The lion was long and its tail was like a vine.  It was scary just to look at the lion’s great height and size.  It’s chest, neck and belly were huge and white.  It was a powerhouse.  The four paws had scary claws.  The lion was yellow with black lions.  The lion was fearless, one that had not even dreamt of fear.  Everyone was staring at the lion.

1-51 The Hunt of the White Lion/ Peer Bhuddu Shah Takes Leave

Sri Kalgidhar ji saw the lion and shouted out to everyone: “nobody is to fire onto the lion.  Stay standing there in a line.”  Both of the Rajas along with their soldiers were standing there.  Guru ji challenged everyone standing there: “I want one warrior to come forward with a sword and a shield and challenge the lion.  Withstand the lion’s pounce with a shield and strike it with their sword.  Battle the lion and kill it.  I will reward such a warrior with whatever he asks from me.  Somebody with great courage come forward.”  Raja Fateh Shah then said: “Guru ji, what are you saying?  This lion is the greatest I have ever seen.  Who will withstand its pounce?  How can it be killed with a sword?  This lion has been hunting in these jungles for years.  There is no one who can face this lion.  No man can kill it.  This lion is notorious in this area for killing elephants.  Nobody can even shoot it.  There is nobody as strong as you Guru ji.  You are young and very powerful.  There is nobody else who can kill it with a sword and shield.  Let’s kill it with bullets.  Please let us fire.  We will all fire at once and it will be killed.  If it dies and falls, that will be good; but I doubt that we will kill it with one round.  If it comes into the centre of our gathering, then we won’t be able to fire upon it.  Right now, it is far, we can shoot it with many rounds.  If it comes close, we can strike it with swords but it will definitely kill a few men.”  Guru ji then turned towards his own soldiers, Fateh Shah’s soldiers and Medni Prakash’s soldiers but everyone looked down.  Guru ji then had his elephant lowered so he may dismount it.  He was going to show his strength and courage.  He took his quiver and bow off and placed it on to the howdah of his elephant and grabbed his shield and sword.  Nand Chand ji and the five brothers (Sango Shah, Maari Chand, Jeet Mal, Ganga Ram and Gulab Rai) were standing with Guru ji.  They noticed that the warrior spirit had fully engulfed Guru ji’s mind.  Mamma Kirpal ji also noticed the same.  They all wanted to stop Guru ji but were afraid to say anything to him.  Medni Prakash then spoke: “Guru ji, please let us shoot the lion.  Please don’t go in front of this animal.  Please strike it with an arrow.”  Guru ji said: “don’t be afraid.  Just watch the show.  I am not afraid of this cat.”  Guru ji then moved ahead with his sword and shield.  Everyone else watched from afar.  This was a very dangerous thing for the most expert hunter.  Some said: “Guru ji is not doing a good thing.  He is being stubborn.  He won’t be able to kill him.”  Others said: “Guru ji is a great warrior.  He will kill the lion with his strength.”  Guru ji approached the lion with great courage.  Guru ji made eye contact with the lion.  The lion did not get up.  Guru ji challenged the lion: “get up!  Why are you sitting?  Get up so everyone can see you.  Why are you being a coward?  I want to see you fight.”  When the Lion heard the words of Guru ji, it lowered his head and bowed to Guru ji.  It recognized the light of Akaal Purakh.  He stayed where he was and moved its tail.  The lion was between the vines and Guru ji was in the open area.  Guru ji shouted again: “get up!  Why are you sitting?  I will fight you.  Why have you accepted defeat?”  Both of the Rajas and the soldiers watched this.  They were all afraid.  Everyone was talking.  After Guru ji challenged the lion twice, the lion stayed.  Guru ji then yelled a third time, louder than the previous times: “you coward!  You are a lion.  You have disgraced the honor of your ancestors.  Your actions are like cowards.  You are surrounded.  If you want to die like a lion, them come and fight.  Otherwise, you will die a coward.”  The lion heard Guru ji’s challenge and got angry.  He got up with a very loud roar.  He shook his head and unfurled its mane.  He came out of his vines and jumped with all its strength towards Guru ji.  It came pouncing on to Guru ji like a thunderbolt of lightening.  Its claws were fully extended forward.  Guru ji’s left foot was forward, standing in paintra (fighting stance).  Guru ji put forth his shield to withstand the strength of the lion and prepared his sword for a strike.  The lion extended 14 feet and landed on to Guru ji’s shield.  Guru ji struck a blow with his sword towards its belly.  Guru ji’s sword went through the torso of the lion like a wire going through a bar of soap.  The lion’s torso was separated from its front half and fell to the ground.  The lion was in two pieces with one strike.  Everyone saw this amazing feat of heroism and chivalry.  Medni Prakash and Fateh Shah sent his men and elephants towards Guru ji.  They all came close to Guru ji with great speed.  The Rajas shouted out: “Dhan Satguru ji!  You are the greatest, most courageous warrior to ever live.  Nobody else would have been able to face this lion.  There is no other warrior like you.  We have never seen, nor heard of, what you have done today.  We have never seen such a dangerous lion before.  Its teeth and claws were unmatched.  You killed it like a goat is killed with one strike.”  Sri Kalgidhar ji then spoke: “this lion was from the time of the Mahabharat.  He was related to the Pandavs.  His name was Jaidrath.  He was the son-in-law of Dhritrasht.  During the Mahabharat war, Jaidrath ran away from the Kurukshetra, showing his back and died.  He took many births on earth after that and ended up in the animal lives.  His soul took a birth as a lion.  Now that I have killed him, he will no longer take any more births.  He was a warrior and now he won’t take another birth.”  Everyone heard Guru ji’s words and folded their hands.  They all said: “Dhan.  Dhan.”  They all had full faith in Guru ji and realised his greatness.  They now know the he was very powerful and that he blesses all, human and animals, with his weapons as well.  They brought the body of the lion back to Paonta.  Guru ji conversed with the Rajas on the way back.

It was evening time and everyone went to their respective camps.  Everyone kept talking about Guru ji’s amazing hunt with the lion.  Every kid in Paonta knew about how Guru ji killed the great big lion.  The lion was laid out in Paonta.  Its two parts were laid out.  The lion had a massive body with an extension length of 14 feet.  People couldn’t believe their eyes of how big the lion was.  They would look at the lion and say: “wow!  Guru Sahib killed it with one stroke?”  It was night time and everyone went to sleep.

Then next day, both Rajas asked permission to leave.  They came to Guru ji’s court and bowed.  They said: “Guru ji, many people come to eat Langar.  You feed the weak and the poor.  We would like to allot some land to your name so that you may collect the taxes of those areas and use them for the Langar.  You are the blesser of all and the treasure of virtues.  You feed all.  Please accept our offering.  Please accept our gift and fulfill this wish of ours.  The land will be in the name of the Langar of Paonta Sahib.”  Guru ji heard Fateh Shah and smiled.  Guru ji said: “Raja ji, this is the house of Guru Nanak.  Come into the protection of the Guru.  The Guru’s house only gives.  Everyone receives what they desire from here.  You will get what you ask for from Akaal Purakh.  There is no shortage in the Langar of Guru Nanak that he started with 20 Rupees.  It does not operate with the help of any tax, Raja or Maharaja.  Guru Nanak Dev ji gives to all.  The Degh (Langar) and Tegh (Sword) of the Guru will always increase.  It will increase by the day in the world.  If you find Gursikhi attractive, then become a Sikh.  I will give you Sikhi from Akaal Purakh.”  Raja Fateh Shah smiled and said: “Guru ji I am always your servant.  It was by our good fortune that you had come to bless us in our country.”  Guru ji gave both the Rajas very expensive Siropas and gave them permission to leave.  Both Rajas bowed and left, mounted on their horses.  Both Rajas were now friends and went back to their own capitals.

Peer Bhuddu Shah ji had been in Paonta with Guru ji for a while now.  He wished to know the path to Allah, which Guru ji told him.  Guru ji gave him the wisdom of Akaal Purakh.  Peer Bhuddu Shah would come to Guru ji’s Devan everyday and converse with him.  The Peer’s students would come as well.  They would listen to Gurbani with love and idolize the appearance of Guru ji.  They imprinted Guru ji’s form into their hearts.  They would do Simran all day long and perform their prayers according to Islamic traditions.  Guru ji blessed them all, seeing their love.  They would ask about Akaal Purakh and Guru ji would tell them.  Guru ji had told Nand Chand to make sure they all had what they needed.  Guru ji would have Peer ji sit near him and speak to him.  Peer ji stayed for about 3 weeks.  Guru ji gave Peer ji the ultimate status of Nirvana.  He gave him Brahmgyaan and broke all of his bondages.  Peer Buddhu Shah was in total bliss.  Love was in every hair of his body.  He eventually asked for permission to leave.  Guru ji gave the Peer a Siropa.  The Peer took the Siropa and touched Guru ji’s feet with it.  He then tied the Siropa to his head.  Peer ji said: “I will come again after a few days and meet you.  My life has been blessed.  Please live in my heart forever.  Please consider me a servant of your servants.  I am yours now.  Please do not ever forget me.  I wish to live in your feet.”  Peer Bhuddu Shah ji left to Sadhora along with his students.

As the Peers went home, they sang the glories of Guru ji.  Guru ji was still in Paonta.  Seeing him would destroy one’s sins.  They would no longer be born again.  Thousands of people came to Paonta, bringing many gifts for Guru ji.  They came from every direction.  They came with love and brought horses and weapons.  They brought clothes and gave them to Guru ji.  In this way, Guru ji blessed his servants and made the sinners tremble in fear.  The warrior spirit in everyone grew by the day.  Many new young men came to enlist in Guru ji’s army.  They were given a salary.  Money was brought in by the Sangat and their wishes would be fulfilled.  Guru ji would go hunting every other day.  He would hunt many ferocious lions and bears.  Kavi Santokh Singh ji is writing the praises of Guru ji.  The kings would follow Guru ji’s words as well as lions.  Guru Gobind Singh ji is a powerful Avatar.  He is the master of saints and the poor.  He is the master of masters.  He blesses his servants.  Jogis, Jattis, Peer, Sidhs and Saints all consider Guru Gobind Singh ji their master.  Everyone bows to his feet.  The First Rut is now complete.  The praises of Guru ji are sung in this.  Sikhs who read and listen to it, their love for Guru ji will increase.  The first Rut has 51 Adhyaays.

Thus ends the First Rut.
