Poorbaardh 1.6 – 1.10

1-6 Giving Wisdom to Gopal Pandha

Guru ji’s actions were blissful and beautiful like the lotus flower.  The praise is radiant like the swan; illuminating like Sharda.  This beauty and radiance; it is as though bees are looking to smell the fragrance of the virtues of the wise beings.  I see them and fold my hands.  I pray to them: may the praise of the Guru reside in my heart.

Bala Sandhur Vaach.

Guru ji plays with the children and says valuable words.  He has beautiful jewellery on his body.  He is without flaw.  He washes the sins away.  He is gracious to the poor.  Sometimes he would sit under trees and sometimes he would play in the courtyard of the home.  The children would always surround him and be in bliss.

Seeing the son of Mehta Kalu ji ready for education, the people were happy.  Pitha Mehta Kalu ji recognized that it was time to transfer the education of the Patwari of the 20 villages to his son.  The administration work was detailed.  His son needed to learn mathematics and other subjects.  Mehta Kalu ji thought: “I should have my son learn from the Pandha.  At least as educated as I him.  After that, I can teach him the work.  Many wise men say: the father that does not provide a path to education to his son, that father is his son’s own enemy.  It is well-known that: uneducated people are not radiant in the world.  They are not wise.  They can’t do good business nor earn money.  The person remains naïve and is easily manipulated.”  Mehta Kalu ji decided to enrol Guru Nanak Dev ji in formal education the next morning.

Mehta Kalu ji got ready the next morning and wanted to take him to the Madrassa.  A plate was filled with rice along with betelnut on top.  New clothes were put on Guru Nanak Dev ji’s body.  The clothes looked great on Guru Nanak Dev ji, on the first day of school.  Both father and son walked to the Madrasa.  Mata ji rejoiced as she saw her son’s back as he walked away.  Guru ji walked like a carefree elephant.  His feet were like lotus flowers.  He was holding his father’s finger in his hand and walked with him.  The bracelets in his wrists clanked along with his belt.  His earrings shined.  His wide eyes looked beautiful.  He had a small Dastaar on his head that looked radiant.

The Madrassa was beautiful.  The children were reciting their multiplication tables out loud.  The echoes of the children, reciting timetables, could be heard throughout the school.  Guru ji was sat down near Gopal Pandha.  The plate of rice was placed in front of him.  The Pandha had taught many kids.  He looked at Guru ji and was filled with bliss.  His heart bloomed like a lotus.  Pitha ji said: “this is my only son.  His name is Nanak.  He is wise.  I have brought him here so he can be given an education.  Please teach my son.  When you make him a learned person, I promise to fill your lap with money and wealth.  Teach him math and other subjects in 2 years.  I will take him and give you money and anything you ask for.  I wish for my son to be well-educated.  The work of Patwaris requires mathematics.”  The Pandha said: “don’t worry.  I will teach him.”  Pitha ji turned back and went to work.

Pandha ji was happy.  He checked the auspicious times and did the Pooja of Sarasvati, the power of education.  He was going to teach the one who was the creator of numbers and mathematics.  He was the infinite power who could not be quantified.  His father had made him sit there and so Guru ji learned as per his father’s command.  Guru ji was the creator of all education.  He sat down and studied whatever he was taught the first day.  He repeated everything he was told.  the Pandha noticed that the child was easily absorbing everything.  He would ask Guru ji to repeat what he was told and Guru ji would say it back to him.  The Pandha was really happy that the child was extremely wise.  He thought to himself: “he won’t take long to learn everything.  He will be ready in a few months.  I will get the money sooner than I thought from his father.  He looks like he is the home of wisdom and focus.  No other child is like him.  I haven’t seen such a smart child before.”  Guru ji learnt everything he was told.  When it was evening, Guru ji came home.  His mother saw him and got happy.  She hugged him and picked him up in her lap.  She asked him: “what did you learn today?”  Guru ji recited the timetable he learnt by heart.  Mata ji was very happy to hear him.  She fed him food and put him to sleep.  Guru ji was always without fear.  Visiting him would give one peace and bliss.

The next day, Guru ji was taken to school after being bathed.  When the Pandha saw Guru ji and Mehta Kalu ji, he said to him: “he is a wise child.  He won’t need to be here more than a few months.”  Pitha ji was happy to hear this.  He then went away.  Pandha ji took Guru ji to the side and wanted to teach him separately as he was wiser than the other children.  He taught him the next lesson but Guru ji did not speak.  The Pandha wanted him to speak, but Guru Nanak Dev ji remained quiet.  The Pandha said: “why do you not speak today?  Listen to me.  Yesterday you learnt everything.  You recited the timetables.  Do today what you did yesterday.  The other children are learning too.  When you will grow up, this education will be useful to you.  You seem to be wanting to play today.  Look!  Do you see this stick in my hand?  You will get hit with it if you don’t listen.”  When Guru ji heard this, Guru ji was going to give the Pandha the very first sermon via Gurbani.  He said to him: “what have you learnt?  Was it useful to you?  You want to make me like you.  I don’t not wish to learn.  Teach me the education which will clear all my entries.  Tell me how to erase my Karma.  Tell me what you learnt.  Then teach me.”  The Pandha was amazed to hear this.  He had never been questioned like this before.  He said to Guru Nanak Dev ji: “I have learnt mathematics, measuring the land, fractional timetables, construction, engineering quantification and other subjects.  This will teach you to be a good Patwari.  Why do you not want to learn this?”  Guru ji said: “this is the bondage by which everyone is bounded by.  Listen Pandha ji, these worldly skills do not help you in the court of Akaal Purakh.  When the pain of the Jumms comes, this education won’t help you.  One spends the whole life in these things and suffers when he/she dies.  This will not give you Mukti.  I want to be free from these worldly things.  Listen as I speak.”

The giver of Mukti; the house of joy; the lotus-like blooming Guru was gracious and uttered a Shabad:

Sri Raag Mahalla 1.

Burn the worldly attachments and grind it into ink, make your intelligence into the pure paper..

Make love your pen, and your mind the scribe; ask the Guru and write the thoughts..

Write the praises of the Naam, the Name of the Lord; write of the Lord’s infiniteness..1..

Baba, oh Pandha, write this understanding..

In the dimension where this account will be asked, you will have the true mark..1.. Rahao..

(SGGS 16)

Listen to the translations of the Shabad that came from the mouth of Sri Guru ji.  This is the first Shabad that Guru ji uttered.  It was the Bani from Parmeshwar.  Listening to the Bani, gives one the highest status in Sach Khand.  Akaal Purakh took an Avatar in a human body and began his holy mission.  He started at a very young age because he couldn’t tolerate the pain that the world was in.  He uttered this first Shabad to help the Pandha across this world.  Guru ji spoke of the ideology of all the Vedas.  Anyone who hears this Bani and accepts it, they will cross the world ocean.

The body is the Deeva, attachment is the oil.  The desires are the wick.  The Gyaan is the flame.  With the grace of the Guru, Gyaan will be received.  The flame will burn the oil and then the wick.  Aatam Gyaan will touch it and burn it.  Aatam Gyaan will give the highest status.  Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is the dispeller of pain and darkness.  He told the world the ultimate truth:

“Pandha ji, when the attachment (oil) is burnt, by the Gyaan fire; the leftover ash will be the devotion.  The ego of the body (thinking the body is yours) will be destroyed by this devotion.  Make the wisdom the paper.  Make the ash the ink.  Write with the quill of love.  Your mind should be the hand.  The writer is the consciousness.  Take the wisdom from the Guru.  Write about the True form of Akaal Purakh that is ever-existing.  The world is false.  Let go of the false world, which is temporary.  You should learn how to write this.  There is no loss in this.  Write the name of Akaal Purakh and sing his praises.  Write about how Akaal Purakh as no end.  Within the court of Dharmaraj, where Karma is seen, the writing that you have written, will be shown there.  Dharmaraja cannot say anything to them.  Neither can the Jumms.  Just as the treasurer of the Shahukaar is, the servants cannot ask about the transactions from them.  The ones that have the name of Akaal Purakh on their Bhuddi, Dharmaraja cannot ask them anything.  They come and serve those saints instead.  They listen to them.  They are afraid of them.  Pandha ji, if you have such a writing, whoever has written such a writing, they have crossed this world ocean.  The Jeev is weak.  If the Jeev has this writing, Paramatma helps them like a friend.  The person who is in the shelter of the highest king, they are not afraid of anyone.”

The Pandha heard this and was amazed.  He was amazed to see such a small child speaking such deep thoughts.  He thought: “just as the moon of the second night that keeps growing, this child can only grow more from this point.”  He was happy seeing this child.  His mind was filled with love.  Just as a Chakor looks at the moon without moving, this is how the Pandha was.  He wanted to listen to the child.  This child was not like other children.  The Pandha thought: “this child has the power of Akaal Purakh.  He will be benevolent.  He is the destroyer of the sins of Kaliyuga.  The sinners that have become strong, they will be destroyed.”  When the Pandha understood who Guru ji was, he wanted to ask him a question.  Just as a bee comes to the lotus to admire its beauty, that is how the Pandha was.  He said: “I have seen the great saints and Bhagats of Akaal Purakh.  Their Bhagti was like the love of a fish with water.  They did not let go of Bhagti.  The Bhagats were very poor though.  They never had food or clothes.  They don’t have enough.  They come and live like the poor.  For this reason, my faith has been broken.  I know that everyone has to die one day.  The Bhagats and worldly people all have to die in the same way.”  The giver of hope to the world, the support of Dharma, Guru ji, he spoke to the Pandha by saying a second Shabad:

Sri Mukhvaak:

Where glory is received by the Bhagats, unending joy, happiness and inspiration at the highest level is given..

They are marked with Tikas on their faces, the ones who have the Name of Akaal Purakh in their minds..

It is with Parmatama’s blessing that such a Name of Akaal Purakh is received.  Other things are useless to speak about.  The life is wasted in other things..2..

(SGGS 16)

Don’t think like this Pandha ji.  The Bhagats and fools don’t die in the same way.  The fools die with pain and sorrow.  They take births, over and over again.  They are born in different life forms and are hung many times.  The saint is always in joy and peace.  They are never afraid of the Jumms.  They are always happy and inspired.  They chant the name of Akaal Purakh, all the time and see him close to them.  They are never worried, even when they die.  They live in the world with joy and receive happiness in the court of Akaal Purakh.  They get the Tika of victory.  The Bhagats who are always engrossed in Bhagti, they are glorified.  The ones whom the Parmeshwar is compassionate towards, they receive the Naam.  The ones who receive the Naam, they see everything else as nothing.  All other words just become wind to them.”  As Gopal Pandha ji listened to the Bani, he felt his mind was the snake that was being charmed by Mantras.  He saw his mind becoming still.  Humility was entering his heart.  The pride of his knowledge was dying.  His words were becoming sweeter.  He asked Satguru ji: “the kings and emperors who do not have the love of Bhagwant, they are stuck within the pleasures of the world.  They do not have faith in the Naam of Parmeshwar.  They spend their life in pleasures and desires.  They are all like bees on a lotus, stuck in its pleasures.  They do not do any Simran of Parmeshwar till they die.  They are engrossed in sins all their life.  The are ignorant towards the One who gave them their body, mind, wealth and kingdom.  They are like the frog living in the mud, who is totally unaware of the lotus flower.  They live without the Naam their whole life.  They never do Simran.  They still live a life of joy.  They only love pleasure.  They are never in pain.  They don’t think about what will happen to them in the afterlife.  How do they live in joy?  What happens to them in the afterlife?  I am in doubt about this.  Please answer my questions, oh Compassionate One.”  The lotus-eyed uttered words that were to destroy all pain and doubts.  Listening to these words causes detachment from the world:

Sri Mukhvaak..

One is coming and one is getting up and going away, some are named kings..

Some are beggars, some have huge courts..

Going to the next world, one will know: that without the Naam, everything is useless..3..

(SGGS 16)

“The ones who did Tapasya with desires, they received many births.  They received kingdoms and forgot the Parmeshwar.  They went to Hell.  Those people were called kings.  The ones who had bad karma had to become beggars and begged from those kings.  This world is only for a few days.  They get stuck and forget the trouble of Jumms.  They understand what happens when they go ahead.  They rub their hands and scratch their heads.  They regret not doing Simran then.  They understand the glory of the Naam.  The Jumms punish such people.  They scold them and put heavy chains around their necks.  They are tied to burning hot pillars.  They are placed in cauldrons of boiling oil.  Hot metal is put into their mouths.  Taking so much pain, they call out for help, but no one hears them.  They had no Guru.  There are many pains in Hell.  This is what happens to the ones who do not do Simran.  They are unwise.  They spend their whole life in pleasures and do not do any Simran.  They did not focus on the Prabhoo their whole life.  When a thief gets caught, no one helps him, seeing his crime.  When a person goes to the Jumms alone, he/she is punished in many ways; no one helps him/her.  Children, wife, wealth, kingdom and pleasures, the Jeev has all this.  Without the Naam they’re entire life, they are not blessed by the Prabhoo.”  The Pandha heard this and became eager to ask more questions.  The Guru’s words were like the Ankush, controlling the elephant-like mind.  He said to Guru ji: “I know now that you are with many powers.  Your words give Mukti.  They are beautiful.  I have one more doubt.  Please answer it as I see you as my Guru now.  These Sultan Khans who are stuck in attachment, they do not do Simran of the Parmeshwar, even by accident.  Why doesn’t the Master give them fear?  That would make them do the Simran of the omniscient one.  They indulge in pleasures because they are fearless.  They don’t know the Simran of Prabhoo.  They don’t remember it.  They are obsessed with pleasure and wealth.  They are attached to their minds and bodies.  They can’t detach from them.  They see the world as permanent.  That’s why they keep collecting wealth.”  Guru Nanak Dev ji, the master of the weak and humble, heard this and spoke:

Sri Mukhvaak..

Fear is in the body, the body is deteriorating by the day..

The ones who are called Sultans and Khans, I have seen them mixed into the dust..

Says Nanak, when one leaves this world, the false love for this world dies as well..4..

(SGGS 16)

“Day and night scare the person.  The unwise forget the fear of Prabhoo.  Life passes by slowly and the state of the body changes.  They are indulged within the pleasures and desires.  When the body deteriorates, life ends.  The Sultans and Khans have been seen mixed into the earth.  Loving the body and the wealth is a false love.  They have to leave it on earth.  It does not go with them to the afterlife.  They lose the game of life in this way.  Without Gyaan, the ignorant ones do not know their end.  They are not aware of it.  They are like a blind person passing a poisonous snake.  Whoever the Satguru is compassionate towards, they are not punished by the Jumms.  The Satguru gives wisdom.  He gives them the eyes to see the truth.  They are no longer afraid of the snake.  Their attentions become focused into the Naam.  They let go of the love of the body and wealth.  They are focused on the highest status.  They become detached from the ways of the world.  They see their body and everything else associated with it, as a myth, a delusion.  They do not have desires any more.  They had forgotten their real form.  They wish to know that form then.  By going to the Satsangat, they practice getting to know their real form.  Their doubt, of not knowing they are Brahm, goes away.  Joy illuminates in their heart by itself.  They do not feel pain anymore.  They do not find joy within the pleasures of the world.  They become still and do not waiver.  They are always in the single state.  Duality goes away from their mind.  They become free from being born or dying again.  They receive the status of “Hari,” and become Mukat.  Oh Pandha, follow this path.  Engrain it in your heart and do not be egotistical of your body.  Do the Simran of Hari and let go of your ego.  Don’t think of anyone else besides Hari.  Make your precious life a success.  You won’t be born again.  You will receive the highest status.”

The Pandha heard this and fell to his knees.  He bowed his head onto Guru Nanak Dev ji’s feet.  He said to Guru ji: “I am unwise.  I bow to you.  I didn’t know your greatness.  You are the Avatar of Mukand, the giver of Mukti.  Your words are like a sword.  Gyaan is the sharpener of your sword.  The hilt is Bhagti.  Vairagya is the width.  Whichever warrior comes in front of this sword, their ignorance part is cut away like a limb.  They will know their real form.  They will receive the joy of Heaven.  The ones stuck in pleasures; they will not face this sword.  They will lose their patience and run away.  They will spoil their life and afterlife.  They step back from this battlefield.”  When the giver of Mukti heard the Pandha, Guru ji saw his humility and looked at him with compassion.  The Pandha immersed into the Naam and went into Samadhi.  The Pandha said: “your words are priceless.  Your words are a key that opens the good virtues.  The disrespectful words that I said earlier, I ask for your forgiveness.  I see you as Sri Prabhoo ji.”  He bowed to Guru ji, over and over again.  He continued: “doing your Darshan, my 3 illnesses are gone.  You came with the name of being the son of Kallu but you are here to save the people.  You are here to save the unwise and ignorant.”  He then went quiet.  He was in bliss.  It was like a person who couldn’t speak, eating sweets.  He couldn’t describe his bliss.  He achieved the highest status.

1-7 Childhood plays/ Telling the meanings of the 7 Saloki Geeta to his Father

Just as rays are in the sun; politics in the punishment of the king, intoxication in the elephant’s cheeks; ghee in the milk, patience in the warrior, coolness in the water, giving joy; Chandani in the moon, fragrance in the lotus, Mukti in the Tattveta, glory to the donor, pitch in the singer, there is joy in Guru Granth Sahib ji.  It is the cream of all Gyaan.

The giver of Mukti came to his own home.  His silver anklets made noise as he walked.  He had bells around his waist which were producing a melodious tune.  When Mata ji saw Guru ji come home, she said: “you are home early.  Why did you come before dark?  Your father will get mad at you.  You are not studying with focus.  You are focused on playing.”  Guru ji began to shed tears.  He was acting like a normal human.  The giver of joy to saints sat on the ground and began to scratch the ground.  Mata ji held his hand and took him in her lap.  She said to him: “I will make you more jewellery and cook tasty foods for you.  Study with focus.  You will learn this and do good when you grow up.”  Guru ji began to play in the open hall.

Pita Kalu ji came home and looked at his son.  He hugged him with love.  He took him in his lap and said to him: “tell me what you learned today.  What did the Pandha teach you today?”  Guru ji heard this.  His face was like the lotus.  He recited the multiplication tables he learnt.  In the meantime, Guru ji’s child friends came.  They were the Bhagats of past lives, looking for Mukti from the hands of Parmeshwar.  They had asked to play with Parmeshwar in their past lives.  They were now born in the time of Guru Nanak Dev ji to play with him.  Guru ji got up from his father’s lap and went to play on the streets of Nankana Sahib with his friends.  It was a full moon night.  Guru ji said to the kids: “let me tell you a story.”  Guru ji would speak about the story that was about Bhagti.  Guru ji’s words were Amrit.  The children would go quiet and listen to Guru ji.  They wouldn’t be satiated with the words of the Guru.  His tongue was the bow; his words were the arrows.  The sweetness was the feather on the arrow.  His wisdom made the arrows sharp.  There were many feathers of techniques on the arrow.  The targets were the hearts of the children listening.  They were attracted to the words of Guru ji.  The kids did not want to go back to their homes.  Their parents would come to get them.  They would grab the kids by their arms and pull them to go home.  The kids would be obliged to go home but their minds were with Guru ji.  They wanted to hear Guru ji’s sweet words.

The kids would surround Guru ji.  Their sins were being washed away by Guru Nanak Dev ji.  They had good karma from their past births.  Guru Nanak Dev ji would sit in the middle and the kids would surround him.  There was more peace here than the court of the Devatas.  Everyone’s eyes would be focussed on Guru ji’s face.  Everyone wanted to sit close to Guru ji.  They would all think that Guru ji was speaking directly to them.  Guru ji would come home after playing with the kids.  He would eat food made by Mata ji and go to sleep.

He would wake up at Amritvela, even as a child.  It would be around 2:30 am when he would wake up.  He had been waking up at that time since he was born.  As a child, he would sit in Samadhi.  This morning, he woke up at Amritvela and did his morning routine.  He bathed and wore beautiful clothes.  Pitha ji took him to the Pandha.  He said to the Pandha: “please see him as your own and educate him quickly.”  The Pandha bowed to Guru ji with his mind.  He couldn’t do it in front of anyone else.  He said: “what can I teach him?  He is the wisest of all.  Don’t see your son as just a son.  He is a great Avatar.  He is wise without learning anything.  He is the one to teach everyone.  Don’t worry about having him being educated.  He knows all of the Vidya of the world.  He is the one that made all of the Vidya.  Who can teach him?  If someone lights a Diva in front of the sun to dispel the darkness, the Diva looks less.  What can a Diva do to the sun?  The Diva would be a sin.”  Hearing his son’s praises, Pitha Kalu ji was happy but was without faith.  Pitha ji came home and got busy with his household work.

Guru Nanak Dev ji wanted to go play with his friends.  His forehead was wide.  His face was radiant.  Everyone was attracted to him.  His eyes were like lotus petals.  There was respect and humility in his eyes.  His teeth shined like diamonds in the home of Sarasvati.  He had armlets in his arms and round earrings in his ears.  Whoever Guru ji would look at, they would be blessed in this world with Mukti.

One day, Guru ji grabbed a few papers to make a notebook.  The children would often copy their parents.  Guru ji was going to bless the sinners.  That was his way.  Pitha ji saw him writing in a notebook and thought he was copying him.  He came to Guru ji and said: “listen son, what are you reading?  What did you write?  You are focussed on the paper.  You look like a big Pandit thinking about Vedant.”  Guru ji heard his father and said: “I am writing the Sapat Saloki Geeta.  I am thinking about the translations.  Doing the Paath of the Geeta, one can follow the path to finding their real form.”  Pitha Kalu ji was amazed to hear his son’s words.  The 7 Saloks of the Geeta were the deepest of the Geeta.  Pitha ji was wondering why he was talking about this.  He wanted to see what he really was doing.  He said to him: “let me hear the translations that you are writing.”  Guru Nanak Dev ji heard this and said the translations of the Geeta that were the dispellers of pain.  Satguru ji said the translations of the 7 Saloks of the Geeta.  It was also known as the “Laghoo Geeta,” which was the summary of the Geeta.  Pitha ji was listening with great focus.  Guru Nanak Dev ji first spoke the words of the Geeta and then did the translations.  He spoke the deeper meanings.  Pitha ji pondered the Pandha’s words: “the Pandha was right!  He is smarter than other children.”  Pitha ji went to his wife and told her everything: “the Jyotishi praised our son before, now the Pandha says your son is very wise.  He was sitting with his friends and I asked him what he was doing.  He told me the translations of the 7 Saloks of Geeta like a great scholar.  He seems to be very wise.  I don’t know what he will do when he grows up.”  Mata ji said: “our son is naturally smart.  His face is always radiant.  He never cries.  He never fights with anyone.  Men and women praise him.  The kids all like playing with him.  He speaks like elderly people and the kids listen.”  When the parents praised their child, they were happy.

Guru ji Nanak Dev ji was playing with his friends.  He would play hide and go seek.  They would all jump and play.  Guru ji would run and touch everyone.  Nobody could catch him.  The kids would carry each other on their shoulders and mark symbols up.  The son of the Bedis was wearing beautiful clothes with nice jewelry.  The kids of the Vaishyas were wearing paper fans on their heads.  The children of the Brahmins would stay around Guru ji as well.   The giver of Mukti would play with everyone.  If a child would come once, they wouldn’t leave Guru ji.  They would play every day.  Their good karma, of these children, would come to fruition to get the company of Guru ji.  They would touch Guru ji and play with him.  Guru ji would play with the kids.  The kids would not know that Parmatma was playing with them.  He would play with the kids many types of games.  He came to earth to get rid of fanaticism and ignorance.   Kavi Santokh Singh ji folds his hands and bows to the feet of the giver of Mukti.

1-8 The Mangal of Gursikh/ Wisdom to Mullan

An arrow on the target; Veerbhadra on Daksh Prajapati; the net on the fish in the river; lion on its prey; hawks on sparrows; Chandi on Biralach; Parashuraam on the Kshatriyas; Ram on Raavan; Balram on Jarasandh; they were all heavy on their target; Inder on a mountain with his Vajra; Vishnu’s Sudarshan Chakra on the sinners; that is how the Gursikhs are on attachment.  I bow to these Gursikhs.

Bhai Balla ji said to Guru Angad Dev ji: “Sri Guru ji, listen to the history, as Guru ji was playing on earth.”

Balla ji speaks:

Guru Nanak Dev ji was washing his servants’ sins as he played.  He played with his friends.  His father loved him, while watching him.  Guru ji was wearing beautiful clothes and jewellery.  Talwandi was being blessed as Guru ji played.  He would run sometimes and sometimes he would sit down.  Guru ji would speak sweet words to the kids.  The people walking by would stop to hear him.  He would eat food from his mother when it was time.  Mata ji would love to feed her son.  She would look at his face and feel happy.  Pitha Kalu ji would come home and look at his son.  He thought to himself: “without being educated, my son is wasting his time.  What will he do for a living?  How will he earn money?  Without having his own work, it won’t be good.  The people will talk bad about him otherwise.  I will need to have him educated.  It is good that he studies now.  It will be hard to study when he gets older.”  Pitha Mehta Kalu ji took Guru Nanak Dev ji and set off.

Pitha Kalu ji took his son to the Maulvi, teaching Farsi.  There were many children sitting there, studying.  Pitha ji met the Maulvi with a depressed feeling.  He said to him: “I have brought my only son to you.  Please teach him Farsi.  He is very smart.  He learns very fast.  Tell me when I should bring him.  I am ready to pay whatever you ask for.”  The Maulvi said to Pitha ji: “tomorrow is a good day.  Bring him in the morning.  You can leave him here today if you’d like.  I will teach him with love.  You are the Patvaari of our city; I will teach him good.  He will obey you.  I will see how smart he is.  You can go home now.”  Pitha ji went home along with Guru Nanak Dev ji.

They both came home and ate food.  They slept the night and got ready the next morning.  Pitha ji took Guru Nanak Dev ji to the Maulvi the next morning.  He said to Guru ji: “study with care.  You will go everyday.  Don’t go anywhere else from there.”  Pitha ji gave 1 Rajitpun to the Maulvi and distributed sweets to everyone.  He gave his son a slate and a pen.  The Maulvi wrote down the letters of the Farsi script: Alaf and the Siharfi (the letters of Farsi).  Pitha ji had left.  When Maulvi ji recited the letters, Guru Nanak Dev ji would say the letters before he finished.  The Maulvi was surprised to see that Guru Nanak Dev ji already knew the Farsi letters.  The Maulvi thought: “this child must have studied with someone else before me.  I am confused if I am teaching him or if he is teaching me.  I can’t even finish the letter and he speaks it.  He is reading the difficult Farsi with great ease.  This child is wise, like an adult.  His wisdom is like the elderly.  His Zer (Sihaaris) and Zabbars (Muktas), financial language, numbers are all perfect.  I have kids here who have been studying for 10 years and can’t read like this child can.  He is not a normal person.  He is an Auleeya Avatar.  He is a power that can’t be quantified.  He is not a normal child.  I have heard the praises of Kalu’s son before.  He learnt Farsi in one day.”  Many came and tested Guru ji.  Whoever came to speak to Guru ji was amazed.  The people praised Guru ji when they met each other: “he is young but his wisdom is great.”  Hindus and Muslims heard his words and bowed to his feet.  They would love being with him as he spoke sweet words.  Guru ji would speak like a Rishi speaking to his disciples.  He would speak to Muslims using Farsi words.  His words were like the Ganga, washing the sins away of who heard him.  He spoke like a scholarly Pandit, who was never wrong.  His words were joyful.  They were worth meditating upon.  Whoever heard Guru ji, they praised him.  Guru ji was illuminating in the world.  He was spreading the glory of Akaal Purakh.

People would leave their household chores to come and listen to Guru Nanak Dev ji.  They would look at Guru ji’s beautiful form and bow to him.  They were attracted to his appearance.  Whatever doubts the people had, Guru ji would clear them.  They would hear the question before saying it to him.  They would say: “he is an Avatar!”  The pure-minded had faith and devotion towards Guru ji.  Guru ji’s words were priceless.  His mind was still like an anvil, as well as his words.

When Guru ji noticed that people started to see his powers, he changed his behaviour and acted like an unaware child.  He hid his powers.  Guru ji would leave the city and lay down under a tree, in the shade.  He would cover his body with a blanket and not speak to anyone, even if someone called out to him.  He would focus his attention into his real form.  Even at home, he would stay laying down.  He wouldn’t respond to his mother’s calling either.  He stopped speaking to anyone in order to hide his power.  He didn’t want to be praised.  He spent 2 months inside his home and didn’t speak to anyone else.  People saw him and said: “he was very wise and smart.  Now he has become a recluse.  We wonder what happened to him.  He stays within himself and looks depressed.  Maybe he has been affected by the shadow of a ghost.  He seems to be detached from everything.  He doesn’t care about his body or his home.  He doesn’t speak to anyone, even if we talk to him.  He doesn’t even look at us.”  The ones that didn’t know his greatness, spoke like this.

Pith Kalu ji became worried of what happened to his son.  He started to listen to others and tried many solutions.  He went to the Maulvi and told him what happened to his son: “he has lost his senses.  In what way did you teach him Farsi?  Come with me and see how he is.  See if he has been possessed by an evil spirit.”  Maulana ji went with Pitha ji.

The Maulvi saw Guru ji laying on the ground with a blanket on his body.  He was carefree on the floor.  Many other people of the neighbourhood came to see what was happening.  Some wanted to hear Guru ji’s words.  They were all surprised to see Guru ji on the ground.  Maulana ji sat on the ground near Guru ji.  He prayed to Khuddah: “you have the blessing of Parvadhagar.  You are wise at a very young age.  Beautiful words come out of your words.  You are benevolent.  Everyone is eager to hear your words.  Your nature is calm.  I know that you will be praised in the future.  You will be radiant in the whole world.  You used to speak so good.  I am amazed to see you quiet.  Why are you so quiet?  Look how concerned your father is, seeing you.  He has forgotten his work, seeing you like this.”  Guru Nanak Dev ji did not speak.  He didn’t answer the Maulvi.  Maulana ji was upset.  He humbly spoke to Guru Nanak Dev ji again: “look how many people have come to hear your words.  They want to hear you speak.  If you don’t speak to them, they will be upset along with me.  For me, please speak a little bit.  We will all have some hope if you speak a little bit.  Why are you so shocked?  For Khuddah’s sake, please get up and say something.”  Guru ji heard the humble words of the Maulvi.  He heard the sake of Khuddah and opened his eyes.  He got up and sat cross-legged.  He uttered a Shabad in Raag Tilang which took the pain away:

Sri Mukhvaak.. Tilang M:1..

The world is a place that will be destroyed one day, I have understood this with determination..

The messengers of death (Azrael) have my hair in their hands, the heart is not aware of this..1..Rahao..

(SGGS 721)

“If you want to know my state, give me your ears and I will tell you, Maulana.  I wasn’t going to say anything but you said the name of Sri Parmeshwar, so I will respond.  The world that you see, you think this is permanent but I see it as being destroyed one day.  Only the Naam of the Parmeshwar is everlasting.  Just as lightening doesn’t last long, nor do the clouds, the world is like that.  It is a dream, like the magician’s illusion.  Whoever sees this world as true and try to grab it, they regret their actions during their end.  The ones that see this world as not everlasting, they do not trust it anymore.  They see this world as a myth.  That’s the reason why I do not love the world or it’s items.  I have turned my attention the other way.  I know that Azrael is always on my head and that it can take me at anytime.  This is the fear I have in my heart.  For this reason, I do not love the material things of the world.”  The Maulana was amazed to hear these words.  He said to Sri Guru ji: “oh child.  You are young.  Why are you speaking like adults?  If an elderly person like me says something like this, that’s fine.  It’s not right for you to say things like this.  You should play like children.  Don’t worry about these things.  Don’t mention these things.  You will grow up and get married.  You will enjoy the life of a householder.  You will earn money and have wealth.  Enjoy your life.  You can think like this when you are older.  Give joy to your family and relatives now.”  Guru Nanak Dev ji heard the words of the Maulvi, which were filled with ignorance.  Guru ji spoke, which had the wisdom to give peace: “whatever you have realized in your whole life, without the Bhagti of the Naam, it is useless.  If a person lives for 100 years, I will tell you his story: a person sleeps half his life.  The other half, the eyes are open.  For 15 years, a person spends his life as an unaware child.  After the age of 80, the eyes do not see properly; the ears do not hear properly.  The senses become weak and anxious.  Focus cannot be attained.  The body does not function properly.  How will he think of Hari at this age?  The remaining life is also wasted without the prayer to Hari.  A person spends the remaining time going to the washroom, eating food, engaging with the wife and relatives.  Time is spent gathering wealth.  The person does good and bad things for it.  He raises his children with love.  He watches them grow.  The whole life is spent in this way.  In the end, the person leaves the earth, empty-minded.  For this reason, make your mind understand that the life is useless without the Naam.  You lose your breath over the love of these useless things.  When a person understands this, the person becomes detached for the pleasures of the world.  The person does Bandagi to Akaal Purakh.  I will tell you how he does it:

Tilang M:1

I pray to your court, oh creator, listen to my request with your ear..

You are truth, infinite, the compassionate one, oh faultless nurturer..1..

(SGGS 721)

You should pray to the Prabhoo: “listen to me with your ear.  You are the truth, infinite and compassionate one.  Give me your Naam.”  Do Bandagi with your body and mind.  Ask for the Naam.  The compassionate one gives the servant Naam and blesses him.”  The Maulvi heard Guru ji’s words, which erased ignorance.  He said to Pitha ji: “your son is great.  My mind is drenched in love.”  He looked at Guru ji and said: “what you have said is the truth.  Your mind is drenched in the love of Parmeshwar.  Your family is wise and concerned about you.  If they love you, you should love them too.  Make them happy.  Your family is bound by your attachment.  Your father, uncle and others do not like your ideology.  Speak to them and do all your other tasks as you did before.”  Sri Guru ji, the friend of the poor, spoke:

Sri Mukhvaak..

Wife, son, father, and brother, no one will hold my hand..

When I fall in the end, when the time of my last prayer comes, nobody will be able to save me..

(SGGS 721)

“Father, brother, uncle and others, their love is all false.  They let go of you if you don’t have money.  If you have money, others will become your family.  When the Jumms come to get you, none of these people want to keep you then.  The Jumms take you alone.  Only Parmeshwar’s command will go with you.  Only the colour of Hari Parmeshwar’s Naam goes with you.  If you don’t do that in your life, then you have nothing.  On the path of Jumms, you walk like an orphan then.  You are punished on that path.  No family or relative could help you then, whom you spent your whole life with.”  The Maulvi understood this now.  He knew now that Guru ji’s heart was full of Parmeshwar’s love.  He thought to himself: “his words have changed my mind, like an elephant is guided with the ankhus.  His words are true and filled with virtues.  The love of the family is false.  There is no one to help a person at the end.  The Jeev suffers alone.  In this ignorance, a person wastes his whole life.  That person does not understand the story of Akaal Purakh.”  The Maulvi understood Guru ji’s glory: “I have never seen so much knowledge in such a young age.  Khuddah has come as an Avatar.  He has come to give joy to the saints and servants.  He has understood Bandagi in such a young age.  He is determined to be generous.  He does not think of sins.  He thinks of the Love of Prabhoo.  He is detached from pleasures.  His words are drenched with the love of Akaal Purakh.”  When everyone heard these words, Guru ji uttered more lines of the Shabad:

Sri Mukhvaak..

One wanders all day and night with greed and desire, one thinks bad and does bad..

To do good things, one does not think of them.  This is my state..3..

(SGGS 721)

“A person indulges in bad thoughts all day and night, many thoughts come.  It is like leaving the stone of Chintamani and going for the fragile item.  That is the way of the uncivilized person.  He pulls the Kalapbrish tree from his home and plants thorns.  He rejects Amrit and takes alcohol.  He rejects sandalwood and takes bamboo.  How can this person achieve joy?  The one who rejects the name of Hari and indulges in pleasures, they spend their whole life in waste.  They never fall in love with Hari.”  There was faith in the heart of the Maulvi.  He folded his hands and said: “there is no one else like you.  You are the pure form of Allah.  You are drenched in Bhagti.”  Guru ji uttered the 4th Shabad to get rid of ego:

Sri Mukhvaak..

Oh Prabhoo, I am unfortunate, jealous, unaware, shameless and without fear..

Nanak says, I am your servant and the dirt of the feet of your servants..4..

(SGGS 721)

“The ones who are drenched in the love of the Prabhoo, they go to the Satsangat.  They don’t like anything besides the Simran of Akaal Purakh.  They give their mind and body to the Prabhoo and become humble.  They become Akaal Purakh’s servants and become one with the One.  I am the dust of the feet of such Sadhoos.  I don’t have any virtues.  I have many faults.  The saints bless people like me.”  Hearing theses humble words, the Maulvi was in a serene state.  He folded his hands, bowed to Guru ji and said: “bless me now.  Forgive me for what I said before.  I was unaware.  Whatever is in your mind, nobody can understand your determination.  Give me a place at your feet.  Take me out of the cycle of birth and death.  You are the greatest.  Destroy my pains.”  The killer of pain heard this and looked at the Maulvi with compassion.  He said: “the mind is gold and the world is sand.  Collect your mind, one grain at a time.  Take it and put it in the forge of Tapasya.  Collect your conscience in this way.  The dirt of desire will separate and the mind will become pure, like the gold.  You can then make jewellery with it, embedding diamonds of the Naam of Parmeshwar.  Wearing this jewellery, you will be praised in every dimension.  Connect to the Satnam with your attention.  Let go of the pride of your body.  Your ego will die.  Go to the Satsangat and listen to the praises of Hari.  Be eager with this.”  These weapons injured the Maulvi’s mind.  He became numb.  Guru ji’s words were so sharp that they pierced the Maulvi’s heart.  His ignorance was gone.  He saw the world as a collection of pain.  He understood the greatness of Guru Nanak Dev ji.  He folded his hands and said: “you destroyed my ignorance.  You are the complete form of Akaal Purakh but you came as a Sadhoo to bless everyone.  You are like the lotus flower.  You should do as you please.  I heard your wisdom.  I will do the Simran and reject the ways of the world.”  Maulana ji bowed and went to his home.  He did Simran all the time.  The love of Parmeshwar came into this mind.  He rejected the love of pleasures.  He did Simran all his life and went to Sach Khand when he died.

1-9 The True Janyow

Sharda, the white, her Darshan gives joy.  She is the root of joy.  In order to sing the glories of the Guru, her fingers move on the veena.  I bow to her with my hands folded.

Pith Kalu ji thought to himself: “it is time to do the Janyow ceremony for my son.”  The family Purohit, Pandit Hardyal ji was called and was told the wishes: “oh Brahmin, please do the tradition of the Kshatriyas.”  Pandit Hardyal ji heard this and said: “bring all of the Samaghri (items of need).”  The auspicious day was calculated and told to Pitha ji.  Pitha Kalu ji heard this and had the Samaghri bought for the Janyow ceremony.  Food was bought for that day.  Goats were bought for food, as was part of the Kshatriya traditions.  Family and relatives were sent invitations.  Other Brahmins who knew the tradition in the city were invited as well.

Everyone arrived on the set date for the ceremony.  Cow dung was used to purify the place of the ceremony.  The Chownka (designated pure area) was prepared for the ceremony.  Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji was called to sit in the Chownka along with the Brahmins and Kshatriyas.  A sandalwood stool was placed in the centre for Guru ji to sit on.  He was like the moon amongst the stars.  He was radiant amongst all of the Brahmins.  The traditions of the Kshatriyas were carried out which involved the various Poojas and rituals of the ceremony.  Pandit Hardayal ji explained the teachings of the Kshatriyas to Guru Nanak Dev ji.  The traditions were explained to him.  Pandit Hardyal ji was then about to put the Janyow around Guru ji’s neck.  The destroyer of pain, giver of Mukti saw the Janyow and said: “Pandit ji, tell me: why are you putting this Janyow around me?  What benefit is achieved by this?  What glory is achieved?  What status does one get?  What loss is there if one doesn’t wear the Janyow?  Tell me.”  Pandit Hardyal ji heard this and was surprised.  He was eager to hear what Guru ji was going to tell him.  He knew that the time to hear his path to Mukti was here.  He wanted to hear the wisdom from Guru ji’s mouth.  His doubts were going to be removed.  He prayed to stay alive for this day.  He knew the greatness of Guru Nanak Dev ji.  He asked Guru ji to get his answers: “the ones who follow the Dharma of Brahmins and Kshatriyas, wear the Janyow and become pure.  Until they don’t wear this, they cannot sit in our Chownka.  The Dharma cannot be complete without this.  The Vedas describe this tradition: one comes into the Dharam of Brahmin or Kshatriya by wearing the Janyow.”  The Compassionate One heard these words and said: “by wearing the Janyow, one comes into the Dharma.  Do you need to do good deeds with it as well?  Does it make one compassionate?  If someone does bad deeds after wearing this, like killing for money, cheating and other bad deeds; does all these things till death; lying, slandering and other such deeds; does this Janyow save you from the Chandaals or the Jumms?  Does it save you from going to Hell and suffering pain?  What reward does the Janyow give?  Sins lead to Hell.”  When all of the Brahmins sitting there heard this, they all went quiet.  It was like they knew nothing.  They knew in their hearts that whatever Guru ji said was true.  To hear the answer, Pandit Hardyal ji said: “what is the Janyow that protects you from going to Hell?  How does one avoid the Jumms and their pain?  Tell us from your mouth.  Tell us and give us joy.”  The Lotus Face One spoke about the Janyow that gives joy:

Sri Mukhvaak.. Salok Mahalla 1..

Compassion is the cotton, contentment the thread, chastity the knot, truth the twist..

This is the Janyow of the Jeev, if you have this, then put it on me..

It does not break, nor does it get dirty with filth, get burnt or get lost..

Blessed are those people, says Nanak, that wear this Janyow around their necks..

(SGGS 471)

“This Janyow is pure and permanent.  Only a few wear this type of Janyow.  Those people are blessed that wear this.  They are without pain and sorrow in every dimension.  They are respected by the Jumms.  If you have this, the one that destroys bad deeds, give it to me.  This Janyow that you have, burns during cremation.  It is made of cotton that will burn.  It doesn’t go to the afterlife.  It is fragile in this world.  Fools show it off to the world.”  Pandit Hardyal ji heard this with love.  He was drenched with Guru ji’s love.  He thought to himself: “what I said during his birth, it has come to reality today.  This Avatar has given me wisdom.  Few will know about this child’s greatness.  His words made my mind still.  Many will not know about him.  My ancestors are going to Sach Khand now.  He is the master of the 3 dimensions.”  Pandit Hardyal ji could not speak as he was immersed in bliss.  He wanted to hear more from Guru ji.  The other Brahmins spoke about the past traditions: “oh child, the tradition of the Janyow is considered pure by the Vedas.  This is an age-old tradition.  This maintains the Dharma.  Brahma started this tradition.  Sanak and Sanandan wore the Janyow.  If it be a new tradition, then you can doubt it, but this is an ancient tradition.  Child, follow your family’s tradition.  Why do you want to go against it?”  Guru Nanak Dev ji heard the Pandits and uttered lines of Gurbani:

Sri Mukhvaak..

A thread worth 4 Kodis (lower monetary value), you wear it and sit in the Chonka..

You make a disciple and give him the tradition in his ear (or tell him to hang the Janyow on the ear while doing bodily cleansing or excretion), by this the Brahmin becomes his Guru..

When the person dies, the Janyow falls..1..

(SGGS 471)

You wear a Janyow worth 4 Kodis that burns in the pyre.  The Dharam is something that goes ahead with you.  The Janyow is useless for the Aatma.  If it is of no use in the afterlife, it’s just a façade to show the world.  I have nothing to do with the world.  I don’t care what they think about me.  When the Jumms beat you, the string is not there.  Only the Naam is priceless and is there.  A person wears the thread and indulges in thefts and adultery.  They are punished for it.  For this reason, do the Simran of Satnam.  Do Simran of Kartar, that will help you in this world.  It stays with you in both worlds.  It is with you in both worlds.  Do Simran all the time with enthusiasm.”

The Brahmins and Kshatriyas that were seated there, were amazed to hear Guru ji.  Nobody could answer him as he was speaking the truth.  The relatives that were sitting there, they said to Guru ji: “Listen Sri Nanak, the wise, your true words are sweet.  Your father has spent a lot of money for this Janyow ceremony.  If you don’t wear the Janyow, this money spent would be useless.  Your father did this as part of the traditions of this society.  The Brahmins and Kshatriyas have come to your home.  Wear the Janyow and be radiant in the world.  The person that does not follow their family’s traditions, they remain detached from the caste and class society. People and the family will be happy to see you wear the Janyow.  If you don’t wear it, the people that are happy and joyous now, will be upset and depressed.  Wear it once.  After today, you can do as you please.”  Hearing the words of the relatives, the Lotus-eyed One spoke Gurbani:

Lakhs of thefts, lakhs of extra-marital affairs, lakhs of lies, lakhs of bad words..

Lakhs of frauds, lakhs of secrets from people (covering one’s own faults), day and night..

The thread is spun from cotton and the Brahmin twists is..

The goat is killed, cooked and eaten.  Everyone then says: “the Janyow has been worn..”

When it is worn out, it is thrown away and another one is put on..

Nanak says, the thread would not break if it had real strength..2..

(SGGS 471)

“These traditions of the world have nothing to do with Dharma.  The thread gets old and breaks.  A new one is put on.  You put a new one on, over and over again.  The world is a myth.  Its make and traditions are myths too.  If you have such a strong thread that stops a person from doing bad deeds, give it to me.  I want my desires to die.  I want to reach the status of indestructibility.”  Guru Nanak Dev ji uttered this Gurbani with wisdom.  As Guru ji spoke, the Brahmins forcefully put the Janyow around Guru ji’s neck.  Guru ji, the giver of joy, remained quiet then, as he had already called out their meaningless tradition.  He proved his point and there was nothing more for him to say or do as they put the Janyow around his neck, without his approval.  The relatives were all happy then.  Pandit Hardyal ji wanted to listen to Guru ji some more.  He spoke with a deep desire for wisdom: “what you have said are such high words.  You have high Karma.  The hearts that are pure will understand what you are saying.  They will see it as true.  The people that are chained with the ways of society and care what everyone else thinks, they can’t let go of the traditions of their castes.  What is the Janyow that one should wear, that would make one pure?  Speak the words that are pure.  All of the Brahmins and Kshatriyas should hear this, the Janyow that does not break or leave you.”  The beautiful Lotus-eyed One heard this and uttered Gurbani that breaks bonds:

Sri Mukhvaak..

Accepting and having faith on the Naam (listening and accepting the Naam), honor sprouts from it, singing the everlasting, true master’s glories is the cotton..

This pure thread will be placed around your neck in the true court, it will not break, it is pure..3..

(SGGS 471)

“The one who wears such a Janyow, that person is fearless in every place.  Wherever he/she goes, they are honored.  Their glory and praises are sung.  This Janyow does not break.  It stays with you forever.  Only the fortunate ones wear this Janyow.  Lust and anger make the mind impure.  The Simran of the Naam makes the mind pure.  This Janyow is good for the ones who go against the world’s traditions.”  Pandit Hardyal ji looked towards Guru ji and knew in his heart that he was the master of the universe.  He said: “you are great!  Only you know your greatness.”  Nobody else could understand the greatness of Guru Nanak Dev ji.  He destroyed the pride of that one Purohit.  Whoever would Guru ji be compassionate towards, that person would be taken out of the cycle of birth and death.

Pitha Kalu ji said: “the food is ready.  Pandit ji, get up and sit in the lines, the Pangat.  Don’t delay and eat the food.”  The Brahmins all got up and took their clothes off to eat (as was the tradition of only wearing the Dhoti and Janyow while eating).  They all sat in the Pangat.  The Kshatriyas were called to eat as well.  They sat in lines as well.  Many types of plates were placed in front of the people.  The Langris distributed the food.  The Kheer with ghee and dry fruits was distributed first.  Everyone got some.  Many types of foods were distributed.  Everyone said the name of Hari before they ate.  Everyone ate with delight.  Paan and betelnut was distributed after, as a mouth freshener.  The Brahmins were given donations and respect.  They were all given leave.  Pandit Hardyal ji received the wisdom that he wanted.  His attention became affixed into the Naam.  He got the support of Prabhoo’s love.

The ones who hear this Katha of the Janyow, or speak it, with love, their indestructible Janyows (account of Simran) will not break or be dirty.  They will not need to wear the Janyow.  They will fall in love with the feet of Guru ji.  The relatives, Kshatriyas and the Brahmins went to their homes.  Pandit Hardyal ji praised Guru ji as he went back home.

1-10 Ardaas/ Herding the Cows/ Making the field green

Guru ji, please bless me so that this Granth is completed quickly.  Kavi Santokh Singh is a sacrifice unto you.  You give the Kavi power to write in beautiful Chands.  Make all of the obstacles powerless in front of me, so that the praise of the Guru can be written and completed well.  May this Granth be radiant like the moon on the 2nd day.

Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach.

After the Janyow ceremony, Guru ji liked to stay hidden from everyone.  He was a carefree personality and kept within himself.  He was the form of bliss and didn’t want to show his powers to anyone.  He was always in an “Udaaseen” state (above and detached from the world).  No fool would know about his state.  Guru ji would keep his eyes closed for most of the time.  Guru ji was not eager to speak.  He did his bodily functions as was needed.  His Indriyas were in his full control.  His attention was within himself.  He was totally detached from the world, just like a child playing within the world.  He didn’t desire anything, looking at objects.  Men and women saw him and said: “Kalu’s son’s mind is different.  What bad thing happened that made this wise person go quiet?  Has an evil eye been casted upon him?  Is that the reason he is so carefree?  Has an evil spirit possessed him?  He doesn’t speak to anyone or hear them.”  In this way, many days passed

One day, Pitha Kalu ji gave Guru Nanak Dev ji a lot of love.  He hugged his son and put his hand on his head.  He kissed his head with bliss.  He looked at his son and thought to himself: “if he works, his intellect will illuminate.  I will make him work a little bit.  He will slowly get involved as he works.”  Pitha ji then said: “go and tend to the cows.  Protect them and watch over them.  We only have you as our son.  How will we maintain our living if you don’t work?  Son, time does not pass well by sitting down.  Do some work to keep your mind busy.  You always seem depressed.  Herding the cows will keep you busy.  We will get more milk that way too.  The servants that tended the cows put them in a bad state.  Give the cows green grass to eat.”  Whatever was said to Guru Nanak Dev ji, he listened and responded: “if you wish, I will go in the morning and tend to the cows.”  The breaker of bonds slept the night.

In the morning, Guru Nanak Dev ji went to herd of the cows.  He got ready with joy.  He opened the ropes of the cows with his own hands and lined them all up.  He left with the cows like this.  He held a stick in his hand to guide the cows to the greener fields.  He let them graze the fields for green grass.  It was like his previous name was “Gopal,” as in Krishan tending the cows.  He was revealing his true form to everyone.  He would walk behind the cows and have them graze the fields.  He would bring the cows back in the evening.  The black and brown cows would come back home.  Pitha ji was very happy to see this.  He was happy to see that his son was working and keeping busy.  He thought: “he will slowly like doing everything.  He has let go of his depression and has kept his mind busy with work.”

The lotus-like body of Prabhoo came home and sat down.  He ate food and drank milk.  He took a blanket on top of his body and went to sleep.  Pitha Kalu ji woke up early and said to Guru ji: “son Nanak, wake up!”  The master of the universe heard his father’s voice and got up.  He went to go tend to the cows.  He opened their ropes and took them towards the fields.  He saw land with green fields and broke the boundary fence to take his cows in.  When he was free, he laid down and fell asleep.  The cows only grazed that particular field.  When the cows ate all of the wheat in the middle of those fields, the owner of the fields came.  He was shocked to see his fields.  He said: “which stubborn person grazed this field?  I got tired watering my fields so much and some fearless person ruined my fields.  The cows have grazed my field and are sitting in the middle like they don’t have an owner.”  Guru ji heard the yelling and woke up.  He then took all of the cows out of the fields.  The farmer was angry and yelled: “I won’t let you leave today, empty.  Pay the fine for the whole field, otherwise I will go to the Hakim, Rai Bhullaar.”  The farmer went and gathered the cows.  He was very angry.  The lotus-eyed Guru then said: “let go of the cows!  Stop being upset.  Whatever is in your destiny, Prabhoo will give you your profits.  When something is ruined, it is not fixed by fighting.  Whatever is supposed to be in your karma, nobody can ruin it.  Everything is in the hands of the master of the universe, the Prabhoo.  He doesn’t listen to anyone else.  So leave the cows and let go of what happened.”  The farmer didn’t listen to Guru ji as he was mad about his fields being ruined.

The farmer kept fighting and walking with Guru ji.  They eventually reached to where Rai Bhullaar was sitting.  The farmer said: “he ruined my fields.  My wheat crops were eaten up by his cows.  His father is the Patwari who is working without wisdom.  Oh lord of the land, give me justice, or your whole district will be ruined.  If the crops will be ruined in this way, how can the farmers make a living?  How can they live here?”  Rai Bhullaar heard this and got upset.  He looked at the famer and spoke harshly: “everyone fears poorness.  Did this carefree child ruin the fields?”  Rai Bhullaar said to his employee: “this child lives in his own world.  He is carefree.  Call Kalu here.  He will pay the fine for the field being ruined.”

The employee went to Pitha Kalu ji’s home and said to him: “come and see what your son has done.  He has ruined the fields of a farmer.”  Mehta Kalu ji heard this and got upset.  He thought to himself: “my son does not show me any peace.”  The employee and Pitha ji came to where Rai Bhullaar and Guru Nanak Dev ji were standing.  Rai Bhullaar spoke harshly: “listen Kalu, do you not have even a little fear?  You sent your carefree son to tend to the cows.  The cows ruined the farmers crops.  How can this be tolerated?  The wheat that has been ruined, pay the fine for it.”  The omnipotent, omniscient and treasure of virtues, Guru Nanak Dev ji, heard this and said: “the cows did not ruin anything.  How can you take the fine?  Not one leaf has been harmed from the field.  You are getting upset over nothing.  If the cows ate anything from the field, you can surely take the fine.  The wise ones do not trust the words of fools.”  The farmer heard this and said: “not one leaf is left from my field?!  Send someone to see the fields.  I am not lying to you.”  Rai Bhullaar was confused, listening to the both of them.  He sent a person to see the fields so he could get to the bottom of this.

When the person went to fields, the fields were still green.  The person came back to Rai Bhullaar and told him everything: “I looked around the whole field.  There is no foot print of any animal, nor has any leaf been harmed.  The fields are green.  There is no sign of breakage in the boundary fence.  The crops are fine.  This farmer is lying.  Oh leader of the people, the farmer deserves punishment.”  The farmer was shocked to hear this.  He went to his fields to see for himself.

He saw his rectangular field and went quiet.  He looked at his crops and returned to Rai Bhullaar.  His fields were green.  He couldn’t understand why.  He did not approach Rai Bhullaar out of embarrassment.  He also did not understand the glory of Guru Nanak Dev ji.  He didn’t bow to his feet.  His karma was bad.  His good fortunes did not arise yet.  He was shocked to see his fields all green.  Guru Nanak Dev ji went home with his father with great joy.  The farmer was shown to be lying, whose fields the cows grazed.  Rai Bhullaar determined the farmer as crazy, who came to ask for justice.  Rai Bhullaar regretted why he spoke so harshly towards good people.

In this way, Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji did such amazing things.  Guru ji would take the cows to the jungles everyday to have the cows graze the fields.  He was the destroyer of pain for all.  Whatever fields the cows wanted to graze, Guru ji never stopped them.  Many fields were grazed and would go green again, without the farmers ever knowing.  The cows were radiant as they got fatter.  The cows would give a lot of milk.  There was growth in the amount of butter that would be made.  Mehta Kalu ji was happy to see this.  The milk was churned in a really big pot by the maid.  Mata ji would prepare the butter and give it to her son to eat.  The calves were really big and strong from drinking all the milk.  In this way, to bless the Jeevas, Guru Nanak Dev ji spent his time.
