1-56 Kamal Nain
The feet of Sri Guru ji are like the sandalwood. I am like the Arind plant, planted near the sandalwood, which has taken on the smell and calmness of the sandalwood. I have become useful now.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Listen Guru Angad Dev ji, oh Giver of Mukti, the Mine of Virtues then travelled on. We sometimes walked on the ocean and sometimes on land. To make us laugh, Guru ji spoke: “Mardana, you ate some good fruits. Are you satiated yet or not?” Bhai Mardana ji folded his hands and said: “I made a mistake, oh Giver of Peace. I spoke harsh words. I was punished with pain for that. You were compassionate and saved your servant. You killed the Daynt. I get anxious when I get hungry. I get angry and lose my wisdom. I speak harshly and then I get in trouble. You are the purifier of the sinners. You are the Love of the Saints. Forgive my mistake.” The Kamal Badan was happy to hear this and then spoke to Bhai Mardana ji, seeing him as his servant: “I am always happy with you. I am happy to hear your words. Stay happy when you are with me. I don’t think anything of your words.” Guru ji laughed and joked with us in this way as we all travelled. We walked for many days. There was no village on the way, nor any city. There were just ruins in every direction. Bhai Mardana ji spoke: “we’ve been travelling through ruins, day and night. Will there be a city or a village coming soon? We have travelled for many days. We didn’t see any village or city. We are walking through the jungles and ruins. We are walking for no reason here.” The Pankaj Naina laughed and said: “you like asking about cities. Are you hungry again?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “that is true. There is nobody here to feed us. I am hungry. There is no food ready for us here. We are walking through the jungle. I think I will die somewhere here. I only get food sometimes. Without food, life can’t exist. I don’t know how I stay in your company. I walk with you without food. You are never hungry nor thirsty. You are always in bliss.” Guru ji laughed slightly. His white teeth looked like crystals. Guru ji said: “listen Mardana, if you die from hunger, I am responsible for you. I’ll bring your Pranas back. One day, it is the truth: death will come. Just as the raw pot melts in the water, the body deteriorates in the world. Whatever you see, this is the food of death. Don’t get upset. The city is close by. You can eat what you want there. It’s not far. It’s close by.” Guru ji then went quiet.
The Complete Guru walked slowly. His Darshan was great. A city then came. It was beautiful and radiant. It was like the Amravati of the Devatas. Amravati would be embarrassed by the beauty of this city. There were beautiful gardens all around. The Kusum flowers were blossoming here. A golden fort could be seen which was radiant. It had different colour gems in it. The homes were the same. The Ataris were high. The domes were golden. The doors were beautiful. There were decorations hanging from them. The doors were made of sandalwood and smelled great. The Devatas would be greedy to see this. The city sparkled bright. It was like many suns shining. When we reached close to the city, Guru ji sat down. He said to Bhai Mardana ji: “go to the city and see it. You asked a lot of times. Eat the food and satiate your hunger.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, I don’t have any money. How will I eat? I don’t know anyone here. I am really hungry.” Guru ji laughed and said: “the whole city will give you food. You will get great food everywhere. You will get what you want.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “Prabhoo ji, looks like you will get me caught. When I eat, people will beat me up. This is your plan. They will see me as a thief and arrest me. They will tie me up. What food will I eat?” Guru ji said: “if someone arrests you, say my name. They will let you go. Eat as much as you want.” Bhai Mardana ji was happy to hear this.
Bhai Mardana ji went to the city. There was a great market in the square. The shops were made of gold. They had gems in the walls. It was beautiful. There was a lot of sweets in the shops. Karah, Pooras and Pooris were in the shops. The people were like Devatas, wearing jewellery and colourful clothes. Bhai Mardana ji was happy to see the city. He was surprised to see the people there. He went to a person and said: “what’s the name of the king of this place? Tell me what the name of this city is? Tell me everything. How do people deal in this place? The shops are made of gold.” The person heard him and said: “the name of this city is Swaranpur. The King is Kaval Nain. He is the king of kings. There is nobody else like him. Everything is free here. There is no price. You can take what you wish. The sweet foods at the shops, they give the food for Dharma. Whatever foreigners wish for, they are given everything without payment.” Bhai Mardana ji was happy and said: “I am hungry. I wish to eat. See me as a foreigner. Tell me your name.” The person said: “Dharam Singh is my name. Whatever you wish for, you can take from the shops and eat it. Nobody will refuse you for anything. They will give you everything for free. Food and gold are free.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “I will eat if you give it to me with your hands. I don’t know anybody here. I am shy to ask for food.” Dharam Singh heard this and said: “come! I will get you food. If you have others with you, take food for them without a doubt.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “there are two others with me but they don’t eat anything. Come and give me the food. Satiate my hunger.” The two of them walked towards the shops.
Bhai Mardana ji and Dharam Singh went to a big shop. Dharam Singh said to the shop keeper: “give him 2.5 Sers of sweets.” Bhai Mardana ji got the sweets and was happy to eat it. He then drank water. He roamed the whole city. He was happy to see the city. For an hour and a half, he saw the whole city and came back to Guru ji. Guru ji saw Bhai Mardana ji coming and said to him: “how did you find the city? You are blooming like the lotus. You are full of happiness. Are you satiated or not?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “Prabhoo ji, listen, I have never seen another city like this. The whole city is made of gold. The homes are made of gold. The shops have many sweets: Karah, Jalabees and Pooris. The food is pure. They are kept nicely. The ladoos, Ras gullas, nuktis and other Pakvaans are kept in the shops. They gave me everything for free. Whatever somebody wants to eat, they give them what they want. I met a person with a great personality. He got the food for me. He said to me: “if you have others with you, take food for them, without fear.” I told him that I have 2 others with me but they don’t eat. They are Santokhis. I ate the sweets and then roamed around the city.” Guru ji laughed and said: “you did good. What you like, you did. Sit and sing Shabads with me.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “what type of work do these people do? The whole city is in joy. The people are always happy.” Guru ji said: “listen Mardana, nobody lies here. The Dharma is great here. People earn virtues and good deeds here. The Raja banished sins from here. They people keep Sat and Santokh in their hearts here. The men and women do not engage in sexual contact here. They procreate with each other by Dhrist Bhog, vision. Everyone loves to give donations and do good Karmas.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “this is amazing and surprising what you told me. These are all new traditions. I have never seen or heard anything like it.” Guru ji said: “what the Kartaar does is amazing. The Ikankaar is infinite and unthinkable. His ways are amazing. Nobody can understand it. A person, although being as small as an atom, feels proud of his/her accomplishments. Such people speak nonsense and show off their achievements. They can’t handle their accomplishments. Some show off their powers for glory. There is no Raja like this Raja in Kaliyuga. Parmeshwar has not made another one like him. 17 Kings follow him. The Raja follows the Dharma and is great.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “let’s stay here and make a living. This place is beautiful. The place is made of gold. Great food is always made. You can get what you want.” Sri Guru ji said: “this is not in our hands. Wherever Kartaar takes us, that is where we will go.” Guru ji, the master of the world, went quiet. Doing his Darshan, the sins are destroyed.
We spent 7 days there. Saying Guru ji’s name, the Jumms get scared. Bhai Mardana ji went to the city twice a day to eat food. He would go to a shop and get the food he wanted to eat. He got Pooriyas, Pooray, ladoos and other foods. He ate and was very happy. Dharam Singh met him one day and said to him: “your 2 friends, we have never seen them in the city. How do they eat?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “they are Santokhis. They don’t come here. If someone takes food with love, they will eat. Otherwise they are Pavan Ahaari (extracting food from the wind). They sit in the Garden outside of the city.” Dharam Singh heard this and thought to himself: “I should see these great saints.” He took 5 Sers of food and came to see Guru ji with love.
Where the Light of the Bedis was sitting, Dharam Singh came there. Bhai Mardana ji was with him. Dharam Singh bowed with humility to Guru ji’s feet. He put the food in front of Guru ji. He said: “please eat this, Sant ji. Please accept this. I have heard of your greatness. You have killed the jungle of attachment. You are the fire that burns it.” Guru ji looked at Dharam Singh and spoke with love: “who sent this food? Who are you? For what reason did you come here? Tell me your story.” Dharam Singh folded his hands and said: “listen Sant ji, you are the Giver of Mukti. It has been 7 days since you have been here. You did not set foot in our city. You did not take any food. You sit here in the jungle. I’ve heard your ways from your companion. I came to you with love. I brought food for you. Kaval Nain is the king of the city. He follows the Dharma and is without ego. He doesn’t show his power to anyone else. He doesn’t show off to anyone nor does he give pain to anyone. He sees everyone as equal to him. He has great willpower and tolerance. 17 kings around this region, they obey him. He doesn’t say anything to anyone. He doesn’t show is power or strength to anyone. Please eat this pure food. I have told you everything.” The Bhagat Vachal spoke: “I have understood the way of this region. I won’t eat the food in this place. I have seen one fault in the Raja. Where there is no fault, that is where the food is pure.” Dharam Singh heard this and said: “our Raja is without fault. What fault did you see in him? Tell me what fault you see.” Sri Guru ji said: “the one who has the fault, only he knows it. He doesn’t tell anyone else. The other minds don’t know his story.” Jagannatha ji went quiet. Dharam Singh bowed to Guru ji’s feet and left.
Dharam Singh went to his king. He said to him: “3 Sadhoos have come to your city. Listen to my request: one comes to the city to eat food. The other 2 sit in the jungle. They have been here for 7 days and haven’t eaten anything. I took food for them but they did not eat. They said that they see a fault in the king. They won’t eat the food because of that. I asked them about the fault but they didn’t tell me. They said that the Raja knows everything.” Kaval Nain heard this and starting thinking deeply. He said: “I wish to see the saints. They have been sitting outside for 7 days.” The Raja left with Dharam Singh. The Raja wished to see Guru ji. He took expensive gifts with him. Many warriors and ministers went with him.
The Raja came to Guru ji and bowed. He then sat nearby. He had no pride of his kingdom. He said: “Sant ji, what fault did you see in me?” Guru ji said: “oh Raja, you know in your mind that all the humans are just like you. Why do you make the others obey you? Your ego still lives. It is hard to kill the ego. Ego has the whole world in its command. It eats the whole world. It is the giver of birth and death. The one who knows how to win it is the greatest warrior. That is the greatest being. To win the attachment, they are the greatest.” The Raja said: “I don’t say anything to anyone. The 17 kings came by themselves. If you see ego in me, then Sant ji, please destroy it.” Guru ji said: “if you have killed your ego, then follow Sudhar Sain Raja. Follow his command. Then I will see you without faults. If you obey this, you will receive Jeevan Mukti. If you have ego of commanding 17 kings, destroy it.” The Raja was happy to see Guru ji. He said: “I would bow to Sudhar Sain’s dogs if you say. I would fall to their feet.” Guru ji was happy with the Raja’s humility. He said: “you are great Raja! Your greatness is like Raja Janak’s. You served him in a pervious birth.” When the Raja heard this, he was in doubt. He said: “if you know of my previous life then please tell me everything. How did I do his Seva? How did Raja Janak get happy with me and give me wealth? You are the Complete Saint, the Compassionate One. I am fortunate to have met you.” Guru ji heard this and said: “when Raja Janak was here, your name was Safa Chand. You did the Seva of the Raja, a lot. One day, the Raja said to you: “get water from the icy mountain. The water is cold there. I wish to drink that. I am thirsty. Go quickly.” You obeyed and left. As you walked, you thought to yourself: “if I was a king, I would give such commands. Raja Janak lives in joy, day and night. He calls for what he wishes from his servants.” You thought of all this. When you brought the water to Raja Janak, he drank it and was happy. He said to you: “ask for what is in your heart. I will give you what you ask for.” You said to him: “I don’t wish for anything. What should I ask form you, oh Raja? I have everything that you gave me.” You didn’t speak the truth. You were shy to say anything to him. Raja Janak was omniscient. He could see everything. He knew what you were thinking. He said to you: “you have already asked for something. You were thinking of something when you were walking towards the icy mountain. You asked for that. You wanted to be a king. You will be bigger than me.” He gave you the great boon. You folded your hands and bowed to him. You said to Raja Janak: “I did your Seva for Aatam Gyaan. I didn’t get that.” Janak said: “in Kaliyuga, the complete Guru will meet you once. He will give you Aatam Gyaan. He will break the bonds of the world for you.” Kaval Nain heard about his previous birth. He was really happy to hear this. He bowed to Guru ji’s feet. He then said to Guru ji: “who else can be more complete than you, Guru ji? Your Darshan makes the pain run away. Come to my city and make it pure. Come and sit in the beautiful home.” After praising Guru ji in many ways, Kaval Naina brought Guru ji to his city.
Guru ji came to the city with love in his heart. Where the golden palace was, strands of beautiful pearls hung; Guru ji sat on the beautiful bed in the middle, that was laid out for him. Many types of Sevas of Guru ji were done. The Raja served Guru ji himself. Guru ji stayed there for a long time. He gave the Aatam Gyaan wisdom to the Raja. He saw the One form in all by Guru ji’s help. The duality in his mind was gone.
I state this Katha in short. The Katha is long. I am afraid of the Granth becoming big. I have summarized this Katha. It is a long one. A Dharmsala was constructed. Keertan started to be sung there every day. Bhagti illuminated in the city. They all did the Simran of the Naam, which destroyed the pain. They all did the Seva of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. The attachments and egos were being destroyed.
Guru ji then decided to leave. The Raja said: “I will go with you. Give my throne to someone else.” Sri Guru ji said: “listen Raja, you are deserving of being the king. Keep the Dyana of the Parmeshwar. I will always be by your side.” Guru ji gave him hope and got ready to leave. The Raja was drenched in love. He shed tears and his throat swelled with emotion. It was like a fish without water. Guru ji blessed the Raja and set forth. He was the Door of Mukti. Bhai Mardana ji ate a lot of food while he stayed there. He got healthier. He became heavier. He left with Guru ji in joy. Guru ji’s glory was deep. The Adhyay is now complete. The Kavi sings the glories of Guru ji.
1-57 Going to Mecca
Sri Guru ji’s feet are like the Kalapbrish which has a nice and cool shade. My mind is like the deer, burning in the heat of desire. It get peace under the shade of Guru ji’s feet.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Listen to the Katha, Guru Angad Dev ji. I will tell you how it happened. Guru ji gave Gyaan to Kaval Nain by showing him the Aatma. He showed him the Aatma inside of him and outside of him. Just as space and ether is everywhere, he showed him the Aatma. Guru ji then travelled on from there. Guru ji travelled slowly. He gave Mukti easily to his Sikhs. On the way, Bhai Mardana ji spoke: “this Raja was great. He was the greatest Raja. He has a lot of wealth. The other kings follow him. The 18 islands in this region, there are as many Rajas here. Can you tell me all of the names of the Rajas? Show me the ones I haven’t seen yet.” The Deen Dayala said: “first, Kaval Nain was the biggest but now Sudhar Sain is the highest king. I gave him this status. Listen to the 18 names: Sudhar Sain, Atka, Sukh Sagar, Madhur Bain, Sagar Sain, Nain Jot, Sukh Chain, Magan Rai, Asra, Panah, Sudh, Bibekoo, Turat Rang, Baal Singh, Sanbalak, Lal Ain, Rai Ain, and Kaval Nain. These are all the kings of the islands.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “you’ve only met a few of them. The other Rajas, will you meet them or not? Wherever you went, you gave them Gurmat.” Guru ji said: “I am not going to the other ones. Sikhi will spread by itself there. Where I went to show them Bhagti, the other Rajas will learn from them. Let’s go ahead. I will show you the Sumer Mountain where the Sidhs do Yog. Many other great beings live there. They do Bhagti of the Prabhoo. They are in joy.” When Bhai Mardana ji heard this, he folded his hands and said: “Mecca and Madina, both of them, I have heard of them many times. The Turks praise those places. They say that those places are beautiful. In which direction are those places? I wish to see those places. Guru ji, you are omnipotent, all-powerful and wise. Please complete this big wish of mine. Sri Prabhoo ji, you can go wherever you want to without delay.” Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “those places are really far from us. It will take us many years to get there.” (They were are in Asaam) Bhai Mardana ji folded his hands and said: “oh Giver of Mukti, you say it would take us many years to get there, but you can reach there at the blink of an eye. Prabhoo ji, please don’t make excuses. I really wish to go there. Please do whatever it takes and show me those places. Please complete my wish.” In this way, Guru ji heard those words and became happy. He said: “Mardana, I can’t refuse your request. Let’s go where you want to go.” After saying this, we all headed towards Mecca. Doing the Darshan of Guru ji, the doubts run away.
Where Bhukher and Sukher was located, we reached there in the blink of an eye. Guru ji wore blue clothes on his body. The Gunni Gaheer took a book under his arm. He wore a high hat, like Fakir’s wore, on his head. The Jagdeesh held a staff in his hand. He wore a Janyow around his neck and had a Tilak on his forehead. Listen Guru Angad Dev ji, Guru ji gave me a pot and a Musalla. I put a Saili around my neck (a black thread worn by Fakirs). Guru ji dressed like a Hajji. He made such a form to show his drama. Nobody could tell if he was a Hindu or a Muslim. Multan and other cities, many Hajjis got together to go to Mecca together. They had a Dhera set up there and spent the night. Where all the Hajjis were sitting, Guru ji went right in the middle and sat down. I laid out the Musalla and Guru ji sat on top of it. He was the fire that burnt the pain. When the Hajjis saw him, they got jealous. They said to Sri Guru ji: “from which Desh have you come from? What is your name and where are you going? Are you Muslim or Hindu? We won’t let you go if you don’t tell us. You are dressed as a Hajji but wear a Tilak on your forehead. We are asking you this for this reason.” Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji said: “I am from the Beghumpura (Sach Khand – place without sorrow) area. Hindus and Muslims, I give witness to both. I don’t take the sides of people who are weak towards the truth. They leave the truth and hold on to the false. They don’t know about the light within all. They don’t understand. They are in doubt. The person came for Bandagi. The person let that go and held on to ego and attachment. Humans are animals and ghosts now. I give wisdom to all.” The Hajjis heard this and were shocked. They thought to themselves: “he speaks great.” The Peer of Multan was there as well. His name was Bahaaval Deen. He doubted Guru ji and said: “this book that you have, do you know how to read it or not? Tell us what is written in it.” Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “to read books, there are 3 ways: Ustakhaan, Gosht and Maghzeh. I will tell you in detail. To read the book and fight with others (eating bones), that is called Ustakhaan. To read and just stay sitting, living in your own ego, making others serve you, not letting anyone else talk; that is Gosht – eating of meat. To read and doing the Simran of the Naam, to know Allah in everyone, the light in all, to destroy the duality, attachment and conflict, to let go of all your ego from your heart, to accept the will of Khuddah on your head; that is the Magaz – to eat the best part.” Bahaaval Deen heard this and said: “why do you wear a Kullay cap on your head? Tell me.” The Nishan of the Bedis spoke: “the Kullay cap I wear, listen to this: the Dastaar is big and uses a lot of cloth. I wear the Kullay which uses less cloth. This shows that I have let go of the ego. Let go of your jealousy and grab patience. Remember Khuddah all the time. The inside of the Kullay cap teaches us to keep the mind clean from the inside. The cap is made of 4 stiches which explains the 4 doubts. Let go of the joy of the world and heaven. These are 2 doubts. Do not get drenched in ego and attachment. These are the other 2.” The Hajji heard this and said: “why do you wear a Kaphni (robe without sleeves)?” Guru ji said: “Kaphni is like the shroud of a dead body. Only a dead body wears a Kaphan. The Guru is like the grave. One is to immerse into that, not moving any body part, staying in the Guru’s command. Don’t show your skills off. Keep it hidden in your heart. Do Bandagi and show your faults to all. Stay in the will of the Guru and be in joy. My name is Nanak. We are going to Mecca.” The Hajjis all heard this and thought in their hearts: “he speaks like a Hindu. He wants to go to the Kabbah with us. The path is long. He is looking for our company. We should refuse him. It is not good if he goes with us.” The Hajjis decided amongst themselves. The unwise people didn’t know Guru ji. They said to Guru ji: “there is a place on the way where we need to board a ship. To board the ship, the Kalma needs to be read. Whoever can recite it, they can go. The Hindus don’t know them. For this reason, go separately from us.” Sri Guru ji smiled and said to them: “when one is born, they are alone. There is nobody with them when they die either. One comes alone and goes alone. The wise people understand this. That person is successful.” Everyone spent the night there.
In the morning, the Hajjis got up and travelled on their way. They didn’t want Prabhoo ji to go with them. Guru ji said to Bhai Mardana ji: “Hindus can’t go. They don’t let Hindus go to Mecca. How can we go now? The Turks left.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “there is no one like you in the 3 Loks. Who can stop you? These Turks are nothing in front of you. They showed their anger in front of you. Please bless me and show me Mecca. Please don’t make excuses.” Guru ji laughed and said: “if you really want to go, sing the Shabads of the Prabhoo. The Prabhoo will fulfill your wishes. Take your Rabab and sing the glories.” Bhai Mardana ji heard this and was really happy. He played his Rabab and sung. He made the Raag live in his pitch. He sang with love and sang loudly, with happiness. After the whole Shabad was sung, we all lowered our necks to bow with our hands folded. When we raised our necks and opened our eyes, we saw the minarets of Mecca. We were in front of Mecca. Bhai Mardana ji said: “where are we? I can see beautiful minarets.” Kamal Badan laughed and said: “we are in Mecca! Your place of pilgrimage. This is where you wanted to come. Get up and look around.” Bhai Mardana ji was really happy. He wanted to see the city. Guru ji knew what he wanted. Guru ji got up, as well as Bhai Mardana ji. Guru ji walked slowly and beautifully. Guru ji sat near the Kabba of Mecca. He was dressed as a Haji. Guru ji did a beautiful Asana and sat down, looking very radiant. He uttered a Shabad in Raag Basant, singing in high Suras:
Basant Hindol Mahala 1 Ghar 2
Ik Oankaar Satgur Prasaad..
The nine Khands, the seven Deeps (continents), the fourteen Loks, the three Guns and the four Yugas – You established them all through the four sources of creation, and You seated them in Your mansions.
You placed the four Vedas, one by one, into the hands of the four Yugas. ||1||
O Merciful Lord, Destroyer of demons, Lord of Lakshmi, such is Your Power – Your Shakti. ||1||Rahao||
Your army is the fire in the home of each and every heart. Dharma is the ruling chieftain.
The earth is Your great cooking pot; Your beings receive their portions only once. Destiny is Your treasurer. ||2||
But the mortal becomes unsatisfied, and begs for more; Naarad (his fickle mind) brings him disgrace.
Greed is the dark dungeon, and demerits are the shackles on his feet. ||3||
His wealth constantly batters him, and sin acts as the police officer.
Whether the mortal is good or bad, he is as You look upon him, O Lord. ||4||
The Aad Purakh is called Allah now. The Shaykh’s turn has now come.
The temples of the Devatas are subject to taxes; this is what it has come to. ||5||
The Kooja – Muslim devotional pots, Bhaang- calls to prayer, Nimaaz – prayers and Musalla – prayer mats are everywhere; the Lord appears in blue robes.
In each and every home, everyone uses Muslim greetings, Meeya; your speech has changed in the world. ||6||
You, O my Lord and Master, if you wish to make the Meers the King of the earth; what power do I have to challenge You?
In the four directions, people do their Salaam to You; Your Praises are sung in each and every heart. ||7||
Making pilgrimages to sacred shrines, reading the Simritees and giving donations in charity – these should bring profit to all.
O Nanak, glorious greatness is obtained in an instant, remembering the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Every minute should be regarded||8||1||8|
(SGGS 1190)
The 9 Khands, 7 continents and 14 Puris; 3 Guns and 4 Vedas; this is what you have made. The 4 Vedas are assigned to the 4 Yugas, which illuminate them. To protect Brahma, you killed Madh Kaitubh. The fire in every body is your army. Dharmraj is the police. The earth is established as the Langar/kitchen. It gives food to all. The Karma is the treasurer, giving the food to all. As one’s Karma is, that is how they are rewarded. The minds that are engaged in desires, day and night; they are always wandering with confusion. Without contentment, they are stuck in darkness, doing sins all the time. They are shackled in chains by the Jumms; they are punished and are in pain. The time has changed. It is the time of the Shiekhs. The Aad Purakh is referred to as “Allah.” The Mandirs of the Devatas are taxed for the pilgrims. Kooja, Bhaang and Nimaaz are the new traditions. People address each other as “Meeya.” This is the language used everywhere. Nirankaar Kartaar sits on their side now. Such a power, who has the power to stop your ways. I wish to earn an income so I have come to you. Reward should be given to the Hind-dwellers for going to Teeraths, reading the Simritees, giving donations and doing good deeds. Give them peace. Give me the greatness of the Naam, oh Sri Kartaar. May the Dharma of the Hinds remain stable. This is my work.” This Shabad was heard by all the people of Mecca. People said: “this Haaji is wise. We should do his Darshan.” Many people came and brought Guru ji gifts. Some did Salaam to him. They praised Guru ji: “you are the home of virtues.”
1-58 Mecca/ Jeevan
Whoever has earned the Shabads of Sri Guru ji, they have won their 5 vices. I bow to such Saints, I place my head on to their feet.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Listen Guru Angad Dev ji to the Katha ahead. The Jagdeesh (Master of the Universe) sat near the wall of the Kabbah for a few minutes. The Provider to the Poor then said: “the Kabbah you wished to see, Mardana, see it now.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, there are walls all around it. How can I see it? How can I have faith? The Turks seem to be ignorant about this. What tradition is this? They do its Pooja with love. It looks unorthodox to me. It seems to be a farce. What do they revere?” Guru ji said: “go inside first and see how it’s made.” Bhai Mardana ji heard this and went inside with joy. As he came to the doors, the Majours who sat there said: “do here what you want to do, what you wish to do ahead and go (tie a blindfold).” Bhai Mardana ji said: “I am a Turk! Why do you not let me go forward (why must I tie a blindfold)? I wish to go inside to do the Darshan. I will be in joy then.” The Majours said: “you don’t have permission to do that. Tie a blindfold. Fold your hands and bow your head.” Bhai Mardana ji heard this and became depressed. He came back to Guru ji.
Guru ji laughed and said: “did you see the place?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “they didn’t let me go in. How can I see inside? If I want to go in, they want me to tie a blindfold. I came with you but will leave without seeing anything. I will suffer because I will never know what is it they worship inside. When will I come again if I don’t see it with you? Please show me what is inside. Then let’s leave.” Guru ji said: “you really want to see inside, eh? Go again, Mardana. You will be able to see but the Majours won’t be able to see you. You can go inside without fear.” Bhai Mardana ji got permission and had faith. He was really happy. Bhai Mardana ji walked inside the Kabbah Mandir. Everyone else went blind at that time. Nobody could see Bhai Mardana ji going inside.
Bhai Mardana ji went inside and saw a stone idol. He looked around and came out quietly. He came back to where Hari ji was. Guru ji said: “what you wished for, was it fulfilled? What did you see inside?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “there was nothing inside. There was a big stone inside. Please tell me the Katha of the stone. How did this stone come here? Why is it revered and worshiped? Why don’t they let anyone else see it? They blindfold everyone. Turks say that you shouldn’t worship idols but they all bow to a stone idol. You know everything, oh Compassionate One. You give Ridhis and Siddhis. Erase my doubt.” Sri Guru ji said: “they are hypocrites and keep it hidden. I will tell you the story from the beginning. Ooma’s husband, Shiv ji, his Ling has been kept here. This is the Pinaaki Ling. There was no Mandir here, it was just a jungle. How it was made, I will tell you. There was a tyrant king here named Khunak. He was a very strict Turk. He only favoured the Turks. The Ling of Mahadev, the Jyotirlinga, Khunak saw it here and got angry. He said to his servants: “pick up this Ling and throw it somewhere else.” When his servants came towards the Ling, they saw a big illumination. Many lands caught on fire. Cities, villages, homes and markets; all burnt. Khunak’s capital was burnt. Seeing such a radiance, Khunak folded his hands and stood up. He destroyed his ego and bowed to the Ling many times. He made many requests. He then became a servant of the Ling. At night, he had a dream of Shivji. He was told: “make my Mandir here. Whoever comes inside with a blindfold, their wishes will be fulfilled. If you don’t follow what I say, you will be in pain.” In the morning, the king had the Mandir made. The place gave joy. Without a blindfold, they think a person would go blind if they go in. Since then, this Mandir has been made. Mahesh, Shiv ji, the powerful, had this place made, which was huge. The Devatas would bathe the Ling. The water would come outside. The Hajjis would come and take the water and treat it as Amrit. This place washed their sins.” Bhai Mardana ji heard this and said: “I didn’t go blind though. Please relieve another doubt of mine: they call the Hindus as Kafirs and see them as lower than them.” Sri Guru ji said: “they are Kafirs (infidels) themselves but call others infidels. Sri Kartaar ji was compassionate towards you. He didn’t let you go blind. You were able to see inside.” Bhai Mardana ji was happy to hear this. He sat down with Guru ji, outside, near the Kabbah. In this way, the whole day passed. The Master spent the whole day talking to Bhai Mardana ji.
When night fell, Guru ji set up his Dhera, sleeping place. Guru ji was to destroy the hypocrisy. Guru ji slept with his feet facing towards the Kabbah Mandir. When it was 3 am, a Mullah named Jeevan came and saw Guru ji sleeping. He saw Guru ji’s feet facing the Kabbah. Jeevan used to broom the area at this time. He saw Guru ji and kicked Guru ji’s legs. Jeevan was a fool. He was unwise. He spoke harshly like one would speak to normal people: “where did you come from? You are unwise. Your feet are facing the Mandir of the Rasool (Prophet). What is your religion, Hindu or Turk? Get up and leave. Your painful days are ahead of you. You are shameless. Why did you come here? You don’t know the glory of Mohammed, which is spread throughout.” Guru ji heard this and spoke to give Mukti: “I walked and I walked. My feet were tired. As I walked, I got really tired. I was anxious and didn’t realize in which direction my feet were in. I made this mistake being unaware, so don’t get so angry. Move me feet around because I don’t have strength to get up now. Take my feet and push them to a different direction. We are from a foreign land. We don’t know the traditions of this place. Do what you like. Don’t get angry. In the direction where the Home of Khuddah is not, according to your mind, oh Maulana, push my feet to that direction. I won’t stop you.” The Mullah was angry. He took Guru ji’s feet and dragged them with all his might. He pulled Guru ji’s leg towards the opposite direction. As he did this, the Kabbah moved like a canoe moves in the water. The Kabbah moved to the direction where Guru ji’s feet was pointing to. When Jeevan put Guru ji’s feet down, he looked up and saw that the Kabbah and moved. Guru ji’s feet were still pointing to the Kabbah. The fool was shocked. He didn’t know what was happening. He dragged Guru ji’s legs again. As he moved the legs, the Kabbah, along with its white minarets and domes, moved as well. Jeevan was embarrassed. The fool did not understand the power of Guru ji, that it is Khuddah himself. When he dropped Guru ji’s feet, the Kabbah stopped moving. The fool Jeevan was really angry. There was nothing he could do. He spoke harsh words: “hurry up and get out from here! Don’t waste any time here! Tell me the truth, who are you? Your traditions are like Hindus. A Mussalman would never do such an orthodox thing. You are sleeping during the morning. You don’t know that it was the time for the Nimaaz. You didn’t do that. You are uncivilized. Where are you from? You don’t have the shame for the Imaan.” Guru ji got up and was going to give Jeevan wisdom. He was going to tell him about the true Nimaaz. He uttered a Salok.
Sri Mukhvaak.. M:1..
There are five prayers and five times of day for prayer; the five have five names (Fazr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha).
Let the first be truthfulness, honest living the second, and the third asking for the good will of all/charity donations in the Name of Khuddah.
Let the fourth be good intentions, and the fifth be the praises of the Lord.
Repeating the Kalima (of good deeds), and then, you may call yourself a Mussalman.
O Nanak, the false obtain falsehood, and only falsehood. ||3||
(SGGS 141)
Jeevan heard Guru ji’s words. He couldn’t respond. He said: “you Kafir! Why do you speak blasphemy? You do not know Allah nor his Rasool. The stubborn person will come and kill you. Listen to me, if a strict Mussalman comes here, he will beat you. I speak the truth. Leave from here. You wear the garb of a Hajji but you don’t know the traditions of the Hajji. I figured you out. You are born a Hindu. Why are you here if you don’t have faith or want to earn it?” The sun came up. Other Maulanas had come. They saw the Kabbah in a different place. They were shocked in their hearts to see this. They all got together. Jeevan said to them: “a Kafir had spent the night hear. He placed his feet towards the Kabbah. I tried to stop him. When he didn’t listen, I grabbed his legs and dragged them with all my strength. I pointed his feet in the opposite direction. When I looked up, the Kabbah came in front of his feet. He seems to be wise in Mantras and Jantras. He seems to be very powerful but I don’t know him. You should come and see him. See if he is a Hindu or a Turk. I couldn’t figure it out.”
The Mussalmans all heard this and were shocked. They came to the Karuna Nidhaan. The Peers and Mullahs had high statuses. They kept looking at the Kabbah, at the direction of Guru ji’s feet and were shocked. The elders surrounded Guru ji and said: “are you a Hindu or a Turk? Where are you from? Your ways are not of Muslims. Your feet face the Kabbah.” Guru ji said a Salok:
Salok M:1..
Let mercy be your Maseed (mosque), faith your Musalla (prayer-mat), and honest living your Koran.
Make modesty your Sunnat (circumcision), and good conduct your Roja (fasting). In this way, you shall be a true Mussalman.
Let good conduct be your Kabbah, Truth your Peer (spiritual guide), and the karma of good deeds your Nivaaz (prayers).
Let your Tasbih (rosary) be that which is pleasing to His Will. O Nanak, God shall preserve your honor. ||1||
(SGGS 140)
There was a Qazi there named Rukandeen. He heard this and said: “do you believe in Khuddah and his Paikambers (Prophets) or not?” Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji spoke: “there are many in front of Khuddah’s court. Many Paikambers stand with their hands folded. Many Peers, Sheikhs and Angels are there. Many Sardaars are there. Who would be able to count them? There are many. The ones that are in the presence of Khuddah, nobody can stop them. The ones who have forgotten the Khuddah, the Prophets come for them. They show them the righteous path of Bandagi. They then return to their home after. The way of your Paikamber, you unwise people have forgotten it. You are busy debating and arguing. You will go to Hell by the noose of the Jumms. I have come to give you wisdom. I will show you the righteous path. If you don’t listen to it, you will go to Hell.” The people heard Guru ji’s great words. They asked about Guru ji’s Dharma: “is the Hindu bigger or the Turk? Tell us. You showed us your great power. Nobody has ever been able to do this before. You moved the Kabbah with your feet. We see your greatness. It is great.” Guru ji then spoke to the people: “the five prime elements were made in one way. The eyes, ears, nose, skin (and tongue) were made in one way. Everyone has the same. The way of the hands and feet are the same as well. The clothes are different of various lands. People use this and fight. They argue, being fools. They divide themselves and fight. The ones who connect to the name of Khuddah, they are praised here and in the court of Khuddah. They see their real form of the Aatma and cross this world with success. Without good deeds, both would go to Hell. The body stays here but your account of deeds will be discussed there. Wealth, family and your Karma; these are your 3 friends. Till there are Pranas in your body, the love of money lasts only till then. When you are cremated or buried in a grave, that’s how long your family lasts. Nobody will be with you then. Understand this properly in your hearts. The third friend is your Karma. That will always be with you. It will give you fruits and results, wherever you are. They will never be destroyed. For this reason, the one that will stay with you all the time, do the good Karma with love. Let go of taking sides and conflicts. Only see the One Hari as your friend. The one who doesn’t have the doubt about their body, their mind becomes pure. They don’t tie their claims to sides in this world. Who is a Hindu or a Muslim? They see everyone as the same. They destroy their doubts and see everything as One. Ram, Raheem, Allah is sees as the Akaal from. They know that Khuddah is the Ikankaar. The fools don’t understand this and keep arguing. They keep the conflict going. They don’t know the result. They will go to Hell and be punished.” They all heard Guru Nanak Dev ji and bowed to him. It was like the bow bending, once the string is pulled. They became humble and knew that it was Khuddah in a human body. They saw Guru ji’s power and bowed to his feet. Their minds were happy to see Guru ji. They bloomed like the Lotus. They saw Guru ji’s face, which was now like the morning sun, awakening the sleeping lotus form the night of attachment. They served Guru ji with joy, like a bee is ecstatic around a lotus. His feet were like the lotus for them. A lot of time passed. Guru ji stayed there. The Adhyaaya is now complete. The Katha is great which gives joy.
1-59 Medina/ Going to Sultanpur
The Amrit Gyaan resides along with the gems of Bhagti and Vairagya; Guru Granth Sahib ji is the ocean. I bow to them with love.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Listen Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, we spent many days there. Sri Guru ji said to Bhai Mardana ji: “where you wish to go, let’s go there.” Bhai Mardana ji heard this and said: “where the grave of Mohammed is, please show me that place. I have seen the façade of the Kabbah. I wish to see the Medina next. We are here so let’s go there. You complete the wishes oh Gun Khana.” Guru ji said: “Medina is 12 days from here. The place where Mohammed’s grave is, it’s 12 days away.” Bhai Mardana ji was happy to hear that. He said to Guru ji: “we will get there quick. It’s close by. It’s not far.” Guru ji heard this and laughed. Guru ji said: “12 days is quite far. You are saying it’s close by.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “Prabhoo ji, we came many miles in the blink of an eye. It didn’t take long. I don’t think it’s far. Travelling with you, we will get there quick. You are the Avatar of Kartaar. You came to save the humans of Kaliyuga.” Guru ji said: “Mardana, I cannot refuse your words. What is called Medina, let’s go. I will show it to you.”
We travelled slowly and reached Medina in 12 days. The Giver of Joy sat down in a nice place, near the Medina. Guru ji said: “we are here. Go inside and see for yourself. You wanted to see the grave of Mohammed Sahib ji.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “they will surely stop me here too. How will I go and see it?” Guru ji said: “they won’t blindfold you here. You are a Turk. They won’t stop you here. Go without a doubt.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “such Turks should burn in an oven. I am not one of them. I am in the sanctuary of your feet.” Guru ji said: “if you are determined with this and you don’t see yourself as one of them, them why did you want to see the Mecca Kabbah?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “I didn’t come to worship it. I just wanted to see what was there. The Turks praised it a lot and I wanted to see for myself what was there. I’ve noticed that the Turks are not wise.” After saying this, Bhai Mardana ji went to see the grave. He wasn’t happy to see it. He had already thought that this place was also praised falsely. He then came back to Guru ji. Guru ji got up and wore his shoes. We went to the room where the grave was. There were many Maulanas there who did the Seva of the grave. They were bowing to the grave. They saw Guru Nanak Dev ji coming and spoke to him, not knowing his greatness: “who are you, coming here with your shoes on? You are unwise and don’t know the tradition of this pilgrimage. You didn’t respect Mohammed Sahib. This is the place of the Rasool. Go back!” Guru ji, the Home of Virtues, heard this and said:
Siri Raag Mahalla 1 Ghar 2..
They have made this their resting place and they sit at home, but the urge to depart is always there.
This would be known as a lasting place of rest, only if they were to remain stable and unchanging. ||1||
What sort of a resting place is this world? Doing Bandagi, deeds of faith, pack up the supplies for your journey, and remain committed to the Name. ||1||Rahao||
The Yogis sit in their Yogic postures, and the Mullahs sit at their Mukaams – the resting places.
The Pandits recite from their books, and the Siddhas sit in the temples of the Devatas. ||2||
The Devatas, Siddhas, worshippers of Shiva, heavenly musicians, Munnis, Saints, sheiks, Peers, preachers, spiritual teachers and commanders.
each and every one has left, and all others shall depart as well. ||3||
The sultans, Khans, Malooks and kings, the rich and the mighty, have marched away in succession.
In a moment or two, we shall also depart. O heart, understand that you must go as well! ||4||
This is described in the Shabads but only a few understand this.
Nanak offers this prayer to the One who pervades the water, the land and the air. ||5||
Allah is the Infinite, Unknowable, the Inaccessible, All-powerful and Merciful Creator.
The whole world comes and goes-only the Raheem – the Merciful Lord, is permanent. ||6||
Call permanent only the One, who does not have destiny inscribed upon His Forehead.
The sky and the earth shall pass away; He alone is permanent. ||7||
The day and the sun shall pass; the night and the moon shall pass; the hundreds of thousands of stars shall disappear.
He alone is permanent; Nanak speaks the Truth. ||8||17||
(SGGS 64)
When Guru ji recited this Shabad, the grave bent towards Guru ji’s feet. The grave bowed and went back to its place. Everyone was shocked to see this. The Mullahs were shocked in their hearts. They understood that it was Khuddah standing in front of them. They all wanted to bow to Guru ji’s feet. They thought to themselves: “Hazarat Mohammed ji is beloved to us. We follow his Path. His grave has bowed to this person. Why should we not bow as well?” They respected Guru ji and had him sit on a high seat. They folded their hands and said: “give us wisdom.” Sri Guru ji spoke: “remember your own death. Don’t forget it. The vices and self-identification with sides, let it all go. See the Khuddah in the whole world. Do the Simran of the Naam in your heart, all the time. The Jumms and Hell, you will not see then. To show off to others, let it go. Earn the truth and you will be in peace.” Everyone was happy to hear this. They wished to have one of the sandals of Guru ji. They took Guru ji’s sandal and wanted to worship it. They kept the sandal where the grave was. We spent some days at Medina.
Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji came back to the Kabbah in Mecca. He sat where he sat before. He then met the same Hajjis we met in Bhukher. They had finally arrived after a year. They were amazed to see Guru ji. They said to others: “since when did this Hajji arrive? We left him back. How did he come here before us? He is born a Hindu.” The people that were sitting there, they said to the Hajjis: “they have been here for a year now. He is the powerful Jaganath. The Kabbah moved by his feet. The Turks all saw this and bowed to him. He is the body of Khuddah. He came to save the world.” The Hajjis heard Guru ji’s praises and wanted to see Guru ji’s power. They said: “if this is Khuddah’s body, he should call water here, right now.” Guru ji was holding a staff. He took the staff and stabbed it into the wall of the Kabbah with force. A stream of water came pouring out. The Hajjis did there Oujoo with the water. They bowed to Guru ji’s feet then. They understood Guru ji’s power. They asked Guru ji: “how did you take out so much water from this place? Tell us everything. You are the Mine of Virtues.” Sri Guru ji spoke, who was the Ocean of Power: “this is the place of the Shivling. There is a lot of glory in this place. Whatever you wish for, this place fulfills your wishes. The Angels come themselves to bathe the Ling with water. That is the water that came out. You did Oujoo with that water. Your Paikamber, who is named Mohammed, whom you all follow; he did his Tapp here. Seeing this place as the place of your Elder, he ate food here and did the Bandagi of Allah for a long time. The Farishtas of Khuddah came to him. He then became powerful. He become a complete Paikamber in the world.” Everyone heard this and said: “Dhan Dhan!” They had other conversations with Guru ji. They had love in their hearts. The Katha is quite long. I don’t wish to make the Granth long. I have summarized the Katha here. These discussions were recorded by many people in Mecca and can be found today.
The Turks did Guru ji’s Simran and worshiped his feet. The Turks became his servants. The Qazis became humble. They spoke with their heads bowed: “please give us one of your sandals. We will worship it with our heart.” The second sandal was placed inside the Kabbah. All of the Turks worshipped it. They said: “Khuddah came himself to save humanity in a human body.” This was their faith. Guru ji was praised everywhere. His glory was bright like the full moon. One day, Guru ji was sitting alone when he spoke to Bhai Mardana ji, sitting close to him: “today, my sister, Bebe Nanaki ji is remembering me. We should go quick. I need to see how she is, in Sultanpur.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “it’s evening now. How can you go now? We should stay the night. We can leave in the morning.” He did not know the greatness of the Ocean of Compassion. Guru ji said: “we should go now to Sultanpur. I promised my sister. I can’t go back on my word.” Guru ji quickly left in the evening. When it was about 9 pm, Guru ji arrived in Sultanpur.
Tulsa Dasi was really happy to see Guru ji. She said: “Bahoo ji, congratulations! Your brother has come back.” Bebe Nanaki ji heard this and was really happy. It was as though she gained the mani of Shaishnaag. She was overjoyed. She saw her brother and grabbed his feet. Guru ji raised her and respected her. The Destroyer of Pain said: “you remembered me. I came right away. Understand this.” Bebe ji laid out a bed. Guru ji sat down and said: “tell me sister, what is your task? I will complete it right away.” Bebe Nanaki ji said: “I only wished to do your Darshan. I thought of you as it had been many years since I saw you. I thought you had forgotten me.” She then shed tears from her eyes. She wiped her eyes and asked how Guru ji was. She said: “you must have been close by as you came pretty quick.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “listen to me, for you, he came thousands of miles in the blink of an eye. It would take years to travel that much.” Guru ji signaled Bhai Mardana ji with his eyes to not say too much. Guru ji said: “if your wish is fulfilled, please give me permission to go. I need to go. Please send my regards to Jijaji. We are in travel; we need to go on ahead.” Bebe Nanaki ji became anxious when she heard this. She began to cry. Baba Sri Chand ji came and stood in front of Guru ji. I folded my hands and said: “your sister is crying. She is in my pain. Your Jijaji is not home yet. You should stay the night.” Guru ji then stayed the night, accepting my request. Kaval Badan, the Home of Gyaan, who cuts the attachment of his servants and destroys the pain, decided to stay.
Bhaiya Jai Ram ji came home as well. He bowed to Guru ji’s feet. Guru ji picked him up and bowed to his Jija’s feet. They both asked how each other were with respect. They all sat down. Good food was made. The food was eaten and the pain was destroyed. Guru ji ate the food and laid down on the nice bed. He hadn’t slept on a bed for many years. His Darshan would destroy the bonds of the world.
At 1:30 am, Guru ji woke up and bathed. He wished to save the world. In the morning, Guru ji got ready to leave. He said to Bhai Mardana ji: “take your Rabab on your shoulder.” Bebe Nanaki ji came to meet her brother. She said: “please accept my request: stay for a month. I am always longing to see you. Give me joy and stay here.” Bhaiya Jai Ram ji said: “what task do you have that you can’t rest? You came after a long time. Stay here and rest for a month.” Kamal Badan said: “the hearts that are connected, are always connected. There is never a separation between them. My sister, destroy your attachment. Think about the Gyaan. Meeting and separation are the Dharma of the body. I am standing on the way. I want to leave now. Give me leave. Don’t delay. I will come back and stay with you forever. Make your sorrow go away. Listen to me.” Bebe Nanaki ji said: “when will you come back?” Guru ji said: “when you think of me, I will come.” Bhai Mardana ji and I left with Guru ji. His words were like a ship, sailing one across the ocean. We left at around 4:30am.
We travelled 5,000 kos. When we stood at a place, Guru ji said: “Mardana, where are we? Look around and recognize the place.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “you are the Avatar of Kartaar. You are unlimited. Even Shaishnaag hasn’t found your greatness. We are unwise. What would we know where we are? The Vedas call you “Nayt Nayt,” they have not found your greatness. This seems like the same place of Bhukher, though.” Guru ji laughed and said: “you recognized the place.” Guru ji looked at me and said: “where do you want to go now? Tell me.” I said to Guru ji with my hands folded: “listen Prabhoo ji, Giver of Mukti: wherever you wish to go, you should go. We will follow you, oh Giver of Joy.” Sri Guru ji said: “on top of the Sumer Mountain, the Sidh Mandali lives there. They are egotistical. Let’s go there.” Bhai Mardana ji got up and folded his hands. He said: “please destroy my hunger and thirst first. Then I can go with you.” Guru ji heard this and laughed a little. Compassion was in his eyes. He took on a human body to save the people of the world. He came to destroy hypocrisy. He is the King of the World. He said: “you will get what you wish for. You won’t feel the pain of hunger again.” As soon as Guru ji said that, we walked a little and the ground became gold. Bhai Mardana ji was happy to see the ground. He folded his hands and said: “I am surprised to see this. The ground is made of gold. The river is beautiful. The water is pure. There are no humans here. The Gold and water are useless.” Guru ji heard this and said: “the beloved servants of Preetam get to come to this land. Humans can’t come here. They are not deserving of drinking this water. They are egotistical. The ones who don’t wish for their own praise, only they can drink this water. They will be satiated forever. They will never be hungry or thirsty again. Their focus will stay in the Naam of Parmeshwar.” Bhai Mardana ji heard this and was really happy. He said to Guru ji: “if I have your permission, I will drink this and destroy my hunger, thirsty and ego.” Guru ji smiled a little and said: “if you can tolerate the intolerable then you can drink this.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “give us a boon to digest this.” After taking the permission, Bhai Mardana ji was going to drink the water. As soon as he drank the water, he received Mukti. His focus came to the Dasam Duaar. He lost sense of his body. He opened his eyes after 3 hours. His attachment was all gone. He did not see “your or mine.” He had Gyaan. His Agyaan was destroyed from his heart. He was humble. He folded his hands and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. He praised Guru ji: “you are the Master of the universe, the Giver of Mukti, destroyer of Attachment, destroyer of hypocrisy. Forgive my mistakes. Saying your name, the Jumms can’t take one. I was unwise when I spoke in front of you. You are the sustainer of the world. You destroy and create.” Guru ji heard this and was happy. He said: “whatever you ask me, this Katha will be spoken of. Whoever reads and listens to this Katha, they will know the righteous path of Prema Bhagti. When you ask me anything, I am happy with you. Don’t think of anything else. Those Sikhs are wise and good who state their doubts to their Guru. It is always good to have your doubts relieved. Those people request their Guru and lose their doubt. That is the one deserving of Mukti. The Guru that can relieve the doubts can give Mukti. The Sikh becomes peaceful. If the Guru doesn’t say anything, and the Sikh doesn’t ask, they are both greedy and hypocrites. This is the best relationship of the Sikh and Guru which talk about the doubts. Whatever is in the heart, the Guru answers and destroys the doubt. If the servant asks and the Guru’s doesn’t answer, you should leave that Guru without delay. Such a Guru cannot give Mukti. The Guru does not get Mukti; how can he give Mukti to the Sikh?” Hearing this, Bhai Mardana ji’s hunger and thirst went away. I have been with them since that day. Bhai Mardana ji was never hungry nor thirsty after that again. He folded his hands and bowed to Guru ji. His mind was without doubts. His doubts were all gone. He travelled with Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. He saw his body as successful. Bhai Mardana ji said: “why are you never hunger nor thirsty? You go a year or two without food or water. What food do you live by? Please tell me. This is a doubt in my mind. Destroy it please before we go.” Guru ji said: “the good Sikhs who have love in their mind, they have Bhagti of Parmeshwar in their minds. The ones who don’t leave their faith upon their Guru, when they eat, the Sikhs that feeds another Sikh, I get that food. My hunger is satiated then. That’s how I eat. This is the truth, Mardana.” After saying this, we headed towards the Sumer Mountain to destroy the ego of the Sidhs.
1-60 Sumer – Conversation with Gorakh, Machinder and Lohareepa
See the love of the feet of Sri Guru ji as the Amrit. Whoever drinks it will become immortal and tolerant.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
The flag of the Bedis was heading towards the great victory, taking his holy army with him. He was going to destroy the hypocrisy. The Bhagti was the Nishan; the cloth of the Nishan was of love, the praise of the Prabhoo was the Nagara, which sounded loud like thunder; the sword was Brahmgyaan; the technique was the bow; the examples and metaphors were the arrows. The strong forts were taken down with the canons of miracles, grinding them to dust. The enemies all lost. The chest plate armor was the Bhajan of the Naam which was not harmed by many strikes of criticism and doubts. Humility was the shield which was not harmed by the arrows of anger. Patience, contentment, truth, generosity, cleanliness/purity, wisdom, compassion and faith were steadily residing in the mind. Many other warriors of Dharma were ready to win the armies of attachment, yelling “kill!” In this way, Guru ji headed towards the Sumer Mountain. The Sidhs were living with ego of their powers. It was required to win them. This was Guru ji’s preparation. Listen to Gorakh’s, what he had in his heart.
Bharthri first met Guru ji and heard the great words of Gyaan. He then went to his Guru, Gorakh Nath and bowed his head. He said to his Guru: “listen to my words, the Parmeshwar has come as Guru Nanak Dev ji Avatar. The Rishi of the Devatas (Naarad) told me about him. I was sitting in one place. Guru Nanak Dev ji came there to meet me. I asked him my questions of Gyaan. He answered them in a great way. This made me very happy. You should go and meet him. You should praise Jog to him and bring him into our fold. You should give him the wisdom of Jog. The whole world will praise you as a great Guru then. You will be praised for bringing Guru Nanak Dev ji into our Panth. Don’t think how and why the Prabhoo will come into our fold, because Ram and Krishan ji were Avatars as well; they came into the world and followed a Guru. You should meet Guru Nanak Dev ji and give him the wisdom. When he accepts the way of Jog, you will be praised in the world.” Gorakh Nath heard this and thought to himself: “he is really powerful. Why would Sri Vishnu’s Avatar come in Kaliyuga? Even if he has powers, I will bring him into our Jog Panth.” Thinking about this, Gorakh Nath went to the Sumer Mountain. This is what Gorakh Nath did.
Now listen to Guru ji’s Katha. After Bhai Mardana ji’s hunger, thirst and ego were destroyed, we all travelled forward. We headed towards the Sumer Mountain. When we were near the Himalaya, Bhai Mardana ji said: “it’s white everywhere. Bhagwant’s creation cannot be understood. Why is this mountain so white? What’s it called?” Guru ji, the Guru of the world, said: “the name of this mountain is Himalaya. The reason why it’s white is because snow is frozen on it. It makes the mountain really cold. The Pandavas came here and froze. The birds freeze too. Only Yudhister, the son of Dharmaraja survived. He went to Heaven. Sri Kartaar ji is compassionate with you, you won’t feel any pain here.” As we went on, the Sirdhaar Mountain was seen. Guru ji saw the mountain and said: “there is no way up this mountain. The head is below and the feet are above. It’s hard to go up this mountain. Whoever can fly and knows Jog, can only go up this mountain. It’s very hard for everyone to go up this mountain.” The Giver of Joy spoke and we listened.
Gorakh Nath came to Guru ji to meet him. He said to us: “who are you and from which land are you from? What is your work here? What is your caste and where are you headed? The sun does not shine here like it does on land. It is scary to see the demons that live here. How will you go on ahead. Go back! If you listen to me, you won’t be in pain. You will need a complete Guru if you wish to go further. Don’t die an untimely death.” Guru ji said: “my form is surprising. I have no caste. I am headed where there is no sun nor moon. I won’t stop. I will go where I please. Whatever fear that existed in my heart, that has been destroyed. I see joy and sorrow as the same. My Guru is Ikankaar, which no one compares to. Gorakh, you have forgotten your form. You made your age bigger and have crossed the line of ego.” Gorakh said: “your body is filled with feces and urine. Listen to me. As a coward speaks in his home, being shameless and fearless, that is how you are speaking. Go on ahead and see what pain you will feel. Only I know how much fear you will know. What is your dress and order? I have never seen such clothes before? Let go of your stubbornness. It is good if you return. Ram and Krishan ji all came and took on a Guru. Why do you not follow a Guru? You will be radiant and will be called “of the Guru.” Guru ji said: “the radiance of the Naam has made our bodies pure. Cowards are like you who try to scare others. I wish to see what’s on ahead. I will go far. You can’t scare me with your words. I won’t back down. My dress is given to me by the Ikankaar. It is forever. You can’t reach there so how can I tell you? You are falling behind. How can I let go of stubbornness? That’s what a warrior does. You don’t have a complete Guru, that’s why you say this.” Gorakh said: “by Jog, the age increases. 9 Niddhis and 18 Siddhis are achieved. The Jogi becomes worshipped in the word. Everyone follows him then. Whatever he wishes to achieve, they can achieve it with their power. Everything is in their hands. They are complete with all the powers. You should quickly become my student and learn this from me.” Guru ji said: “I’ve let go of the ego of my body. I don’t wish to keep it. What do I need to make if immortal? The Niddhis and Siddhis you speak about, they are my maids. The Kalapbrish is achieved by the name of Sri Hari. The wish to be worshiped, I have destroyed that desire, seeing it as a great illness. I have no wish for any item or power. I am in bliss by the Naam. I am always satiated.”
Gorakh heard these words and thought to himself: “he is not accepting our way. I will use my powers and test him. He talks but I want to see if can do it too.” On the rock, where Guru ji was sitting, Gorakh used his powers to move the rock. The rock did not move, even a little bit. Just as Angad’s (son of Bali) foot did not move in Ravan’s court, that is how the rock was steady. He figured out that Guru ji was really powerful. He got embarrassed and disappeared. As he travelled while being invisible, he thought to himself: “if he becomes our servant, we will become radiant. He will make our Panth grow in the world. It will illuminate. Nobody else is stronger than him. The big countries will come and bow to us. If he comes to our Panth, everyone will become our servants.”
Just as a small king of one village wishes to win every direction, that’s how Gorakh’s wish was. He wanted to do the impossible. Gorakh came to the gathering of the Sidhs, the Sidh Mandali. He was really worried. He thought of many ways.
Bhai Mardana ji said to Guru ji: “Guru ji, I can’t see the sun. If we look up, there is no sun.” Guru ji said: “look downwards. The sun is in the south.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “how far are the sun and moon from the earth? Tell me about the stars, oh Muktidata.” Guru ji said: “the sun is many hundreds of thousands of Jozens away from the earth. The 7-faced chariot of the sun rides really far away. The moon is thousands of Jozens away from the earth. The stars are too far away to quantify. They have no set distance. They are really far. Their dimensions are above and below. The Dhruv dimension is still. Dhruv was 5 years old. He was determined and did a great penance.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “Prabhoo ji, the summit of the Sumer, we should go see Dhruv who did this strict Tapp in such a young age and received the still status of bliss.” Guru ji smiled and said: “Bala, what is Mardana saying? He wants to see Dhruv’s dimension. Tell me what is in your heart.” Listen Sri Guru Angad Dev ji with love. I said to Guru Nanak Dev ji: “what Mardana says is good. The high places where the Rishis and Munnis live, I wish to see them all.” The Destroyer of Pain travelled on to destroy the ego of the Sidhs. He sat on a mountain. We asked the name of the mountain. Guru ji said: “it is called Una.”
Gorakh sat in the Sidh Mandali and did many Asanas. Some Sidhs wore deer hides and some wore lion hides. Some sat on them. Some wore Godhris. Some wore crystal earrings. Some held Bairaagans in their hands. Their bodies were white because of all the ash they rubbed on their bodies. Some held and played the deer horns. Some held bowls and sticks to gather ash. Some held flags. Some had a Saili, black thread around their necks. Some tied a loin cloth. Some had beards but shaved heads. Some held a bag to beg for food. All of them were very powerful and egotistical. They could fly to wherever they wanted to. They could make themselves smaller than an atom or bigger than a mountain. If they wanted to, they could make the mountains move; fly at will; become lions and scare the humans; become snakes and many other things. The Sidhs sat around Gorakh Nath. Gorakh Nath thought hard and spoke to the Sidhs: “there is a Tappa named Nanak ji. His body is of feces and urine who has not cleansed himself by the Yogic practices. Be alert. He is coming to see your place. Whoever is powerful out of all of you, they need to win him and make him return. If he doesn’t agree, make him your student and bring him here. He can become a Sidh and become immortal.” The Sidhs that were sitting were happy to hear this. Machinder got angry and said: “I will win him right now. I won’t let him come here. He can come if he becomes my follower. I will ask him about his body first. I’ll ask him how it’s made. I will ask him about Jog. I’ll see his answers and stop him. I will ask him where he’s from and where he’s going. I will destroy his wishes like hail destroys the field. Let me go and win him. I need the boon of the Sidh Mandali.” Gorakh Nath was happy to hear this. He gave his Guru, Machinder Nath, permission to go. Machinder Nath was known to change bodies. He was quite angry.
Just as an elephant wishes to win the lion and sends the deer to fight, that’s how Machinder Nath was sent by Gorakh Nath. Guru ji was the lion, whom they wanted to win. Machinder Nath came quickly to where Guru Nanak Dev ji was sitting. He said: “oh child, why did you come here? Do you have powers or not? Tell me! Tell me the truth. Don’t lie. If you wish to go on ahead then take my wisdom. If you want Jog, take Jog. Otherwise you can receive kingdoms. If you don’t listen to me, you won’t be safe. I speak loud and clear, if you want your life, then leave from here.” Guru ji smiled and said: “whatever is your wish, Machinder, ask it from me. I will have you forgiven from Kartaar. He will give you what you want. Don’t make me angry by speaking harsh words. I will go wherever I wish to go. I won’t go back by your commands. Understand this. I don’t wish for any kingdom. I will give you wisdom. Understand this. Do what you think is good.” Machinder Nath heard this and got angry. He became anxious. His eyes were red. He said: “tell me how many breaths one takes in the day night? How many nerves does the body have? How man Kotris are there? How big can the mouth open? How many joints are in the body? How many tillies are there? How big is the liver? If you tell me about the body, you can go on ahead. If you forget, I will give you pain.”
Guru ji said: “24,000 breaths are taken in a day and night. There are 900 main nerves and 72 big Kotris. The mouth can open as much as 4 fingers. There are many hairs, I Kot Neel (1 Kot = 10,000,000; 1 Neel = 10,000,000,000,000). 1,600 joints, 12 fingers are the tillies. The liver is 8 fingers big. This is how the body is made. If you wish to ask me something else, you can ask. The lion is not afraid seeing the elephant’s tusks or the horns of a deer. He cannot be scared.” Machinder Nath tried using his powers but they didn’t work. It is like the ant trying to pick up a mountain. He saw Guru ji more powerful than him. He became embarrassed and came back to Gorakh. He said to Gorakh: “he is more powerful than us. He won’t listen to us. His words are really high. We won’t waiver. His powers are deeper than the ocean.”
Lohareepa was sitting and listening to the conversation. He said: “give me permission to go and see him. With your blessings, Gorakh ji, I will defeat him.” The Sidhs said: “go and may you be victorious.”
Lohareepa came to where Guru ji was sitting, on the Una Mountain. Guru ji’s words would clear all doubts. Lohareepa said: “oh Child, Adais!” Guru ji smiled and said: “Adais to the Ikankaar! Come and sit Jogi ji.” Lohareepa said: “what is your name and where are you from? Where are you going? What Panth do you belong to? Where are you from?” Guru ji said: “my name is Nanak. My home is where the Anhad sound can be heard, all the time. I will go to the sanctuary of Kartaar, which gives bliss. My land is Beghumpura, the land of no sorrow. My Path is Ikankaari. If you wish to ask me more questions, go ahead. All of you keep coming to me, running. You all have the disease of ego inside you. You should treat it first and not shame the Jog Panth.” Lohareepa got angry and collected his powers. He said: “how many chakars are in the body. How many petals do they have? How many Pranas are in the body? What makes you satiated? Tell me about the 5 primal elements and the 5 Indriyas. Tell me the characteristics of the elements and their behaviors. Tell me their virtues and how many Prakritis there are. Tell me about the body and you can go ahead. Otherwise take our wisdom and come into our Panth.”
Guru ji said: “the first Lotus Chakra is the Mooldhara (Root Chakra), placed close to the anus. It has 4 petals and is a red lotus. Ganesh is associated with it. Under the bellybutton is the Swadishthana Chakra (Sacral). It is orange and with 6 petals. Parvati lives there. In the bellow button is the Manipura (Solar Plexus) Chakara with 10 petals. It is yellow, with Laxmi residing there. In the heart, is the Anahata (Heart) Chakra which has Hanuman living there with 12 petals and is green. In the throat, it is the Vishudda (Throat) Chakra which has 16 petals. That’s where the Jeev (Sadashiv) lives. It is blue. Between the eyebrows, the Trikuti, is the Agya Chakra with 2 petals. It is Indigo. The Guru (Krishna) lives here, which gives bliss. Who can pierce these 6 Chakras, they can keep their focus in the Dasam Duaar. The Pranas can stay there. There are 10 Pranas: Pranas, Upayan, Samaan, Udyana, Vyaan, Naag, Kooram, Krikal, Devdutta and Dhananjay. The Puran stays in the heart. Apaan stays in the bowels. In the navel is the Samaan. In the throat is Udyana. Vyaan is in the whole body. Naag makes you burp. Kooram opens your eyelids. Krikal makes you sneeze. Devdutta makes you yawn. Dhananjay stays after you die. These are the 10 Pranas. The Pranas are supported by the Nijjar Dhaar, the sweet Amrit taste that drips. This satiates the Jogi. The 5 tatts: space, wind, fire, water and earth. Sound, touch, taste, sight, and smell these are their properties. The ear is made of the space; wind is skin; fire is eyes; water is tongue; earth is nose. These are the Gyaan Indrees from Satogun. Each Tatt has 5 Prakritis: greed, attachment, ego, pain and love are of space. Strength, the use; running, to spread, to cuddle up, to expand, this is of wind. Sleep, yawning, hunger, laziness and thirst, this is of fire. Blood, perspiration, heat, mucous, semen, these are of water. Skin, bones, flesh, nerves and hair, these are of earth. There are 25 combinations in the body of the Prakritis. The Jeev is made up of this castle, Lohareepa. Listen my friend.” When Lohareepa heard this, he became calm and recognized the Wise Avatar of Kartaar. He thought to himself: “he is Kartaar. There is no one greater than him.” He became humble and bowed his head. He folded his hands and respected him. Guru ji respected the Sidh and said: “you are a great Sidh. You are the treasure of Jog.”
Bala ji’s face is like a lotus. He said the Katha of Guru ji which was fragrant. Guru Angad Dev ji’s mind was like a bee, in great joy. He illuminated Love and focused on the form of Guru Nanak Dev ji. His body was still. Guru ji’s breath was still in the Dasam Duaar. The listeners got up and went to their homes. The night and next day was spent in Samadhi. The next night passed and the day came up. His Samadhi did not break. He did not eat, drink or bathe. The people met each other and said: “Sri Guru Angad Dev ji has left his body and gone to Kartaar, it seems. He lives inside the Kartaar now.” Everybody was afraid to shake Guru ji. Nobody called out to him. They all sat there, quietly, with Guru Angad Dev ji. 7 nights and 7 days passed like this. He did not wake. His eyes were closed. He sat in the same Asana, still and radiant. I bow to his feet.
