1-51 Salas Rai the Jeweler
I bow to the form of Sharda, the dispeller of pain; the giver of joy and wisdom. She destroys the fear of her servants and completes their wishes. You are illuminating in the 14 dimensions.
Guru Angad Dev ji was filled with love after hearing the Katha of Bharthri and Koda. Guru Angad Dev ji went into (Nirvakalap) Samadhi as he heard the Katha. His eyes were closed. His body was still. He did not say a word. Bhai Bala ji and the other Sikhs (Bhai Paira Mokha ji, Baba Budda ji etc.) went to their homes. Guru Angad Dev ji sat for 81 hours in the Samadhi. He did not gain consciousness for about 4 days. He did not eat, drink or bathe for that time. He sat in the same place, in the same Asan the whole time. Nobody disturbed him out of fear. The senior Sikhs sat near Guru ji during the day. They wanted his eyes to open. After 81 hours Guru Angad Dev ji came out of the Nirvakalap Samadhi. He got up and bathed. He ate and did his personal activities. Guru ji sent for all the people to come and hear the Katha of Guru Nanak Dev ji. The speaker, the writer and the listeners all came. They all sat in their places and got ready to listen to the Amar (immortal) Katha of Guru Nanak Dev ji. Bhai Bala ji began to say the Katha again. Sri Guru Angad Dev ji listened with focus.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
The Rakshish was saved. Guru ji, the Giver of Mukti, travelled on. The jungle was thick. There was no city nearby. Guru ji travelled from there, very slowly. At that time, Bhai Mardana ji said: “Prabhoo ji, I am hungry. It’s been many days since we ate. I can’t go forward. I can’t go another step. There is no village in sight.” The Light of the Bedis said: “be patient. There is a village close by.” Guru ji kept him busy and travelled. We passed the jungle. After about 9 km, there was a village. Prabhoo ji showed it to Bhai Mardana ji: “look at the beautiful village, high on that place. Let’s go quickly. You can eat there.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “listen oh Mine of Virtues, Prabhoo ji, I don’t have any strength to walk. I will die here somewhere. I’ve figured this out. Look where Khuddah decided to kill me. I can see that I will die. What will happen if we go to the village? I have no money. Without money, nobody will give us anything. How will I eat?” Sri Guru ji heard this and sifted the sand with his foot. From the ground came a very precious and expensive ruby. Its beauty could not be described. Guru ji said: “keep this ruby with you. Pick it up and tie it to your shirt. Be patient and walk on ahead. We are almost there now.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “what good is this rock? Nobody will pay anything for it. If we had money, we could have bought what we wanted to. Keeping the rock with me won’t satisfy my hunger. I need food.” Sri Guru ji said: “the village is close by. You will see the rock’s value in the city. Let’s travel the 9 km quickly.” Guru ji gave him hope and travelled on. Bhai Mardana ji was embarrassed. He was upset.
The Light of the Bedis travelled to the city. There was a beautiful tree with a nice shade. Guru ji sat under the tree, outside of the city. Bhai Mardana ji said: “I will do as you say. The “Laal” that you gave me, what shall I do with it?” The Lotus-faced One said: “do you know the name of this city or not?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “Prabhoo ji, what’s in a name? Will you let me eat or not? What I don’t care about, you speak of that. You wasted the whole day.” The Giver of Joy laughed and said: “the name of this place is called Bishamberpur (a town in Patna).” Bhai Mardana ji said: “so it is. I am hungry and weak. I don’t know how I came here.” Guru ji became compassionate and laughed. He said: “go to the city and find the home of a jeweler. Sell this laal (ruby).” Bhai Mardana ji heard this and went to the city, quickly.
(According to Giani Gian Singh ji, Guru Nanak Dev ji said: “don’t sell the ruby. Have it valued.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “life is precious too. It too is not valued correctly.” Guru ji said: “have it valued.” Bhai Mardana ji went to the city and went to a grocer. The grocer valued the ruby and 2 Radishes. Bhai Mardana ji then went to a Halwai. The Halwai valued it at a pound of burfi or Pakoras. As Bhai Mardana ji travelled, the value kept doubling. He then found Salas Rai)
Bhai Mardana ji went to a jeweler and had the laal valued. The jeweler was not wise. He valued it at 3 copper coins. Bhai Mardana ji thought to himself: “a laal is supposed to be expensive. That’s what wise people say.” Bhai Mardana ji said to the jeweler: “my 2 companions are outside of the city. I need to ask them first.” Bhai Mardana ji came back and said to Guru ji: “I had the laal valued at 3 copper coins.” Guru ji said: “find Salas Rai Jauhari. Mardana, go to his home. Give him the ruby. Whatever he gives you, bring it back.”
Bhai Mardana ji went to the city to find the home of Salas Rai Jauhari. When someone showed him the home of Salas Rai, Bhai Mardana ji went to the home and yelled out to him. Salas Rai heard the yelling and sent a servant: “who is this that is yelling out to me?” The servant came to Bhai Mardana ji and said: “who are you and why are you here?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “I wish to sell something.” The servant called him in. Bhai Mardana ji went into the home and showed Salas Rai the ruby. As soon as Salas Rai saw the ruby, he was extremely happy and amazed. There was something written on the ruby. The jeweler was wise and followed the Dharma. He thought about everything and said: “the ruby says that whosoever sees the ruby showed pay 100 Rajitpuns. I will value it later. First take 100 Rajitpuns for having me see the ruby.” Bhai Mardana ji was happy and came to Guru ji. Guru ji said: “Mardana, how much was the ruby valued at?” Bhai Mardana ji told Guru ji: “there was a Shahukaar who gave me 100 Rajitpuns for just seeing the ruby. I came back to ask you how much should the ruby be sold for? The jeweler wants to know. Whatever you say, I will bring back.” Guru ji said: “go to the Shahukaar and ask him why he gave 100 Rajitpuns.”
Bhai Mardana ji went back and asked: “why did you give me money?” The Shahukaar said: “this is for the respect of the ruby. It says it on top of the ruby: “give 100 Rajitpuns on seeing this.” The value is what you ask for it. I will give you what you ask for it.” Bhai Mardana ji came back and told Guru ji what the Shahukaar said: “the money was for the respect of the ruby. He will pay whatever the ruby is worth.” Guru ji said: “should it be sold or not? The ruby cannot be valued.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “I don’t know these things. You can do what you think is right.” Sri Guru ji said: “Mardana, this in fact is not a ruby. It is the Name of Kartaar. You can either keep it with you or sell it.” Bhai Mardana ji knew the value of the Name. He spoke with humility and clarity: “Sri Prabhoo ji, I won’t sell it. It gives peace in every dimension.” Guru ji said: “alright. If you won’t sell it, then give the money back to the Shahukaar.” Bhai Mardana ji went back and returned the 100 Rajitpuns to the Shahukaar. He said: “take the money. Give me the ruby back. The Master does not wish to sell it.” Salas Rai said: “take the money and the ruby. Do as you wish with them.” Bhai Mardana ji was happy to get both things. He came back to Guru ji and said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, I got the money and the ruby. He gave it to me and said sweet words. Whatever you command me, I will do. I am tired and can’t travel anymore though.” Sri Guru ji said: “take the ruby and give the money back. Take the money if we are to sell the ruby. If you’re not going to sell it, then why take the money?” Bhai Mardana ji went back with the money. The Shahukaar didn’t take the money back and said: “it says that on the ruby. That’s why I gave you the money. This is my Dharma. If you take the money back, my Dharma is violated. I would never do that. The money is yours. Do what you want with it.”
Bhai Mardana ji came back to Guru ji. He thought to himself: “Sri Guru ji doesn’t keep it. The Jauhari doesn’t take the money back.” He went back and forth 7 times. He was tired of going back and forth. He was hungry. He got angry and threw the money in front of the jeweler’s home. The jeweler thought to himself: “this ruby is rare. Whoever had this, he didn’t take the money. He is content. I wish to do his Darshan. He discarded his greed. He must be great.” He collected sweet foods as his Karma came to fruition. He sent a servant and said: “don’t let them leave. Keep them there.” Salas Rai took the food and gifts and went to see Guru ji. He saw Sri Guru ji’s radiant form from afar. Bhai Mardana ji was embarrassed. He kept his head low and didn’t say anything. He was upset from being hungry. He was tolerating everything. He was thinking many bitter things but didn’t say anything out of fear of Guru ji.
Salas Rai came at that time. He placed sweet foods in front of Guru ji. He folded his hands and bowed to Guru ji. He said to us all: “please take your money. Please let me follow my Dharma.” Sri Guru ji said: “if I wished to sell the ruby, we could have taken the gift money of respect. If we are not selling it, how can we take the money? You keep the money.” Salas Rai’s doubts were gone, seeing Guru ji and hearing his words. His mind was pure now. He knew that this was a complete saint: “it is great to see him and hear him.” He said: “I was amazed to see the ruby. By your grace, I got to see the ruby. Is the ruby valuable or yourself? Seeing you, I am blessed. Who is the real ruby? Please help me understand this. Oh Compassionate One, you are the Mine of Virtues.” Guru ji spoke a Shabad:
Bilaval Mahala 1..
The red ruby created by the Beloved. He is seen within his Beloveds..
The ones who have the red love in their eyes for the Parmeshwar, they don’t regard anyone else as valuable..1..
Listen Salas, you are a jeweler, recognize the ruby within you..
Don’t gather these garbage rubies, recognize the real form..1..Rahao..
From the joining of rocks and stones, you call yourself a Shaho..
Without the complete Satguru, one is blind; one cannot value the way (of Bhagti)..2..
You gather as “Mine, Mine!” Day and night..
No field grows crop that has the Kullar (scum) after rain..3..
Listen Salas to this request, if you get the (selfless) Karma..
Nanak says, only meditate on the One, pain will never come then..4..
(Sri Nanak Prakash Granth)
These false rubies, you gather. Nothing is solved by this. You can’t even eat them. It doesn’t protect you from cold, like clothes do. People keep them for prestige and ego. They call themselves as “Shahoos.” Sri Kartar’s name is the ruby. Whover gets it, they are blessed. The Aatma ruby is priceless. You didn’t value it. You forgot about the bliss of your Aatma which is infinite. You fell into the troubles of the world.” Salas Rai heard this and said: “who are you? Where is your country? Where are you going, Sant ji? What is your form? I have seen the followers of the 6 Darshans (Sankhya, Yoga, Nyaya, Vaisesika, Mimamsa, and Vedanta). You don’t dress like any of them.” Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “my name is Nanak Nirankari. I am from the land of Ikankaar. That is the way they dress there.” Salas Rai heard this and wanted to grab Guru ji’s feet. He said: “if you have seen Ikankaar, then show me as well. Make me free from sorrow. I come to the sanctuary of your feet.” Sri Guru ji said a Shabad:
Maaroo Mahala 1.
In the pure, pure waters, both the lotus and the slimy scum are found.
The lotus flower is with the scum and the water, but it remains untouched by any pollution. ||1||
You frog, you will never understand.
You eat the dirt, while you live in the pure waters. You know nothing of the Amrit there. ||1||Rahao||
You live continually in the water; the bumble bee does not dwell there, but it is intoxicated with its fragrance from afar.
Sensing the moon in the distance, the kumunadi bows its head. ||2||
By adding Amrit-like; sugar, milk and honey into the Toomba is not sweet; the cleverness does not go away.
You don’t let go of your ego, your sense of self; just as the mosquitos loves blood. ||3||
The fool may live with the Pandit, the religious scholar, and listen to the Vedas and the Shastras.
You don’t let go of your “self” (ego), like the crookedness does not leave the tail of the dog. ||4||
The hypocrites; they do not merge with the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Some are absorbed in the Feet of the Lord, Har, Har.
The mortals obtain what they are predestined to receive; O Nanak, with your tongue, chant the Naam. ||5||4||
(SGGS 990)
Salas Rai heard the Shabad and its translations from Guru ji. He became humble from his mind. He said: “please give me the wisdom by which I can receive the greatest status of Mukti. Take the Rajitpuns and bless me. You are the complete and compassionate saint.” Sri Guru ji said: “the money is of no use to me. This money looks good in your home.” Salas Rai said: “if you don’t take the money then please eat the food I brought.” Bhai Mardana ji heard this but remained quiet. He thought about the food: “Sri Guru ji should take the food and give it to me. I am hungry and tired. I will be satiated if I get the food.” Sri Guru ji was benevolent. He said a Shabad after seeing the food:
Maaroo Mahala 1..
The Love of food and Pakvaans is to love the Parmeshwar
It fulfills the wishes, this is the Pooris
The sweet is To say Har Har from your mouth. The mind stays in his presence..1..
Listen Salas, you are my brother,
If you understand yourself, you will be complete..1..Rahao..
The Meva is to meet the Parmeshwar. To know the Sat is the clothes..
Eat food that satiates you, that is the name of the Hari, what turns you away from the poisons of the vices..2..
(Sri Nanak Parkash Granth)
The servant that was with Salas Rai, Adhraka Das, he quickly became pure. He bowed in the Astanga way to Guru Nanak Dev ji. He said: “I am in your sanctuary. I am fortunate. I know that you are the Parmeshwar. Your name is “Deen Dyaal,” the Compassionate One towards the weak. You save everyone from the fires of the world. Keep the promise of your Name.” Guru ji was happy with Adhraka. He broke his bonds of rebirth. He said a Pauri by which Salas Rai wanted Mukti
Pauri..
To be born in a high caste, who doesn’t think of the Lord, they are Saakat..
If a low caste attains to the Narayan, They are free from the waves of greed who sing the praises in the Sadh Sang..3..
Listen Salas, this servant of yours, he understood that he is the Narayan.
Nanak has (counted him among) met him with Bhagats. He has received the highest status..4..
(Sri Nanak Parkash Granth)
Salas heard this and thought: “he is the Avatar of Sri Parmeshwar. His words have freed your servant’s pain. He is in bliss now.” He became humble and let go of his ego. He bowed to Guru ji’s feet. He said: “free me as well. You are the Giver of Mukti. Break my bonds of attachment. You purify the sinners. Keep my honour. I am in your sanctuary. I don’t see anyone else like you.” Sri Guru ji said: “then do this: bow to your servant’s feet. If you bow, you will be free. You won’t be born again.” Salas Rai heard this and folded his hands. He bowed to his servant’s feet quickly. He said to Guru ji with humility: “this servant of mine is very wise. He had the characteristics of saints. He is great in his Karma and Dharma. You blessed him. He is deserving of being bowed to. He is a human. I would bow to a dog if you tell me to. I will obey you.” Guru ji heard his words and laughed. He said: your bonds are broken. Bow to Nirankaar now. Your doubts will be destroyed from your heart.” Salas Rai bowed in the Ashtanga way towards Guru ji. He praised Guru ji with love: “you are the compassionate Master. You are omniscient of the 3 Loks. You give joy and kill the enemies. You kill the attachment with your Darshan. You are the Master of Inder. You are undefeatable. You are under the spell of your servants.” Guru ji had a 1.5 yard Dastaar tied to his head. Guru ji gave that Dastaar to Salas Rai. Salas Rai tied the Dastaar to his head. His Dasam Duaar opened right away. He was in Gyaan Anand. His radiance grew. He was blessed right away. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji blessed him. He was in deep love in his heart. He praised Guru ji in a Shabad:
Salas Rai Vaach..
The complete Satguru, he gave me the Naam and opened my Kapaat..
The transaction I did, it is never in loss..1..
Satguru Nanak is complete, he is the warrior of his word..1..Rahao..
He showed me the Gyaan of the Shaasters and Vedas; he opened my eyes of Gyaan, forever..
The world is a Merchant, the Shah is the One Bhagwant..2..
The Satguru is the business, Naam is the profit..
The Naam is always sounding, that is my work..3..
Salas makes a big request, listen Kartar.
You took off the fragile colour of Maya and gave me the deep colour of the Name..4..
Sri Guru ji was really happy to hear this. He was given a Manjhi of a Masand. the whole city worshiped him then. He was deserving of Pooja. Guru ji then said: “till you are alive, don’t give this seat to your children. Your servant will sit on your seat after you. Don’t give it to anyone else. I was going to give the Manjhi to your servant first. He came to my shelter first. He is the servant so he will get it second according to the worldly ways. I kept your respect. Your age is less. You have 2 years and 7 months left. Your servant is a saint. He is without jealousy.” Listen Guru Angad Dev ji, the Giver of Mukti, Guru ji said to me: “Mardana is hungry. Give him food to eat.” I obeyed and gave him food. There was sweet food. He ate as much as he wanted to. His belly was full. Salas Rai went home. We all stayed there for many days. (3 months according to Giani Gian Singh ji)
1-52 Mach, Kal, Naarad
The feet of Sri Guru ji are the canopy over the head. The give the never-ending shade. The sun of the Jumms does not come close.
Sri Bala Sandur Vaach..
Guru ji stayed in Bishamberpur for a long time and destroyed the bad wisdom of the people. He spread Sikhi, the way of Mukti, there. Everyone did the Simran of Satnam, the giver of peace. One day as Guru ji was sitting, Bhai Mardana ji spoke: “have you come to stay here? The city is beautiful. You seem to have fallen in love with it. When you left Talwandi, you were detached from everything. It seems as though you are happy here. We should travel to other lands now. Wherever you wish, you should go.” I heard this and thought to myself: “he is a Doom Marashi after all, so he keeps talking. He hasn’t let go of his ways. He has seen Guru ji’s glory so many times but still doesn’t live by his will.” Guru ji said: “let’s go Mardana! Let’s go and see other lands of different areas.” Guru ji took leave from the city. He established Bhagti in the world.
The Giver of Mukti travelled on ahead. After a few miles, we saw the shores of the ocean. A Mach, a big fish, was on the shore. The fish was spread over 100 km. Guru ji got on top of its back and spoke: “listen Mardana and Bala, we are traveling on top of this, do you know who this is?” I said: “what do we know? Only you know your ways. We are unwise. What would we know. You are the Parmeshwar, the great being. We know what you make us know. We see what you show us.” Guru ji said: “this is a big Mach. We have been travelling on it for a while. It is really big. Let’s go and see how big it is.” We all travelled and sat at the head of the Mach. Bhai Mardana ji looked around and saw the really big face of the fish. Its eyes were really big. He got scared and was surprised. He then spoke: “Sri Guru ji, your power and nature are only known by you.” The night passed and the morning came. The Mach’s body changed into a Devata. He was touched by Guru ji’s feet. He bowed to Guru ji’s feet and praised him: “you are the Chetna and Anand form. You destroy the pains. You are the Sri Parmatma, the Dev of Devatas. Only you know your ways.” The Light of the Bedis said: “who are you? Tell us. How did you become such a big fish? You let that go and came into the form of a Devata. You look wise now with nice clothes and jewellery.” The Mach spoke: “you know everything about me. I will tell you the story because you want others to hear it. Oh Master, you are asking me so I will tell you. From the time of Raja Janak in Tretayuga. I was his servant. He was Mukat. One day, he told me to do something. I did the work in anger. Raja Janak was omniscient. He knew what I was thinking and said: “you did the work but you suffered like a fish.” By his words, I became a fish. I was a fish for a long time. I touched your feet today and so I became a Devata.” The Mach then went to the dimension of Devatas as his curse from Raja Janak broke.
Guru ji traveled on ahead. As we walked, Bhai Mardana ji said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, forgive my mistake. I didn’t know your glory. I’m always speaking in front of you. I don’t keep respect in front of you.” Guru ji laughed and said: “I had forgiven your past sins first, then I took you with me. Why did you doubt this? Don’t worry about thinking about that. I have a deep love for you. I have a lot of work with you.” Bhai Mardana ji was happy to hear that.
We travelled on the ocean as we had done before. Bhai Mardana ji said: “there is no difference between you and Khuddah.” He spoke with devotion. Guru ji said: “don’t say anything. Just walk behind me quietly.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “Prabhoo ji, whom do I fear? I am with you.” Guru ji said: “there will be a big problem ahead. The form is scary and it is big. You will be scared seeing it.” Bhai Mardana ji got scared and said: “why are we going that way then? We should go back, quickly. Protect us from it.” Guru ji saw Bhai Mardana ji scared and laughed. He said: “if we run back, it won’t let us go. It will run and catch you. It’s better to go on ahead. Kartaar will do good.” Kal (the wife of Naarad) was coming ahead. Her form was scary. Her eyes were red like blood. She was black. Her teeth were scary and big. She had human intestines around her neck. She held skull pots of blood in her hands. Her hair was brown and metallic. It was open. The Devatas and Daynts were scared to see her. She opened her mouth and walked towards Guru ji. When Guru ji saw her, he saw a staff in the ocean. He picked up the staff and hit Kal in the face with it. Kal tried to hold the staff but there was nothing she could do. The staff got stuck in her throat. She was in pain. She yelled in great pain. She shed tears. Bhagat Naarad Muni ji came with the Veena in his hands. He was drenched in Prema Bhagti. He came, singing the praises of Kartaar. He did the Darshan of Guru ji. Both bowed to each other. Both folded their hands and bowed to each other with respect. Naarad ji had Guru ji release his wife. He then looked at Guru ji’s form, which was the beautiful Amrit. Naarad ji could not get enough of looking at Guru ji. He praised Guru ji: “you are the beginning who said the 12 Vaaks of the Vedas; so Brahma would recognize himself. Brahma then spoke the 4 Vedas. In Satyuga, you sustained the Dharam. You gave the wisdom of the Name and Yoga. The people who did Simran, you cut their pains. You then saw the low wisdom of the people and then lowered their age. By Manu Raja, you gave him the Manu Simriti and said: “do Simran and Yagna.” In Treta, you sustained Dharma in this way. Many received Mukti in this way. The tradition of the Dharma was spread. In Dwapur, you saw the wisdom of the people go bad. You lowered the age and gave them the Puranas in the form of Vyaas. You gave him the 18 Puranas. You told them to do Simran of the Name and to do the Pooja of 16 types. In this way, you saved many in Dwapur. Dharma was spread in this way. Now it’s the time of Kaliyuga. People are not wise. They are dirty, stuck in desires and vices. You came and gave the beautiful Baani. You gave the wisdom of the Name of Parmeshwar. They are to do Simran and come to the Satsang. You destroyed the doubts of many humans. You saved them from the world ocean. The people who obey you, they will be saved. When you see the Dharma being slandered and in trouble, you come as a great Avatar. You save the people yourself. You keep the Maryada and give joy to all.” Guru ji was happy with Naarad ji and spoke sweetly: “oh Dev Rishi, you are the Ishwar of the Munnis. You are the greatest. You know yourself. You live in every heart. The Viraat form of Kartaar, you are the Munn of the Viraat form. (This is to clarify that Naarad is the power of the mind and makes the efforts) You are the supreme Bhagat, of Prema Bhagti. There is no one like you. The praise of Sri Kartaar is like the water. You, oh patient one, your mind is like a fish in that water.” They met each other with joy. There was a lot of love from both sides.
Naarad Munni ji brought his wife, Kal, and made her bow to Guru ji’s feet. He said: “please forgive her mistake. Be compassionate with her. She has been hungry for a long time. She didn’t know of your greatness.” When Guru ji heard these humble words, Guru ji became compassionate and said: “this is my first form. When I will be in the 6th form, I will satiate her hunger. Then in my 10th Avatar, I will establish a strong Panth. There will be many wars. Her desires will be fulfilled then. She will be fully satiated then (Kal is only satiated by the blood and flesh of true warriors).” Guru ji blessed both and gave them leave. They went to where they pleased. This history is beautiful. Listen Guru Angad Dev ji, oh Compassionate One.”
The other Sikhs that were listening, they asked Bhai Bala ji some questions: “Naarad Munni ji praised Guru ji. He said that Guru ji kept the glory of the Naam in all the Yugas. We can conclude that without the Name, Mukti cannot be achieved. There is nothing bigger than the Name. Why was Yoga, Yagna and Pooja talked about? The 3 Yugas had the Naam. Why were the other practices mentioned? In Kaliyuga, it’s only the Naam. Doing Simran will give you Mukti.” The listeners asked Bhai Bala ji these questions. Bhai Bala ji said: “listen oh Sikhs, the lovers of the Satguru, I will tell you what I have heard and learnt. Listen to the example: there were 2 men who had stomach aches. One was poor and the other was rich. The pain in their stomachs were unbearable. They yelled out in pain. They lost their patience. The rich man went to a Vaid (doctor). He told him of his pain. The Vaid was wise. He understood his pain. He thought to himself: “he can be cured easily. If I give him Ajwain, he will be cured. If I tell him this, he won’t know the greatness of Ajwain. He is rich, he won’t think he can be cured that easily.” The wise Vaid made a placebo and gave it to the rich man. He said to him: “take this medicine with ajwain. Mix them together and eat it. Your stomach illness will be cured.” The rich man came home with the placebo. He mixed it with the ajwain and ate it. He was cured. He understood the Vaid as quite wise. He told everyone: “the Vaid give me a medicine which cured my stomach illness.”
The poor man also went to the Vaid. He didn’t have even one coin in his home. He told the Vaid of his illness: “cure my pain. Do something.” The Vaid diagnosed the poor man with the same illness as the rich man’s. He said: “just take some ajwain. Eat it and you will be cured.” The poor man folded his hands and said: “I don’t have money to buy ajwain. Please be compassionate and give me something to cure me.” The Vaid heard this and became compassionate. He gave him money to buy ajwain. The poor man took the money and bought ajwain. He ate the ajwain and cured himself. In the same way, the complete Guru saw this. He gave wisdom as per the strength and ability of the people. In Satyuga, the wisdom was pure. They lived for 100,000 years. They won’t be able to pass their time doing only Simran. With the Naam, they were given the wisdom of Yoga. Prana Yam along with Simran, many crossed this world ocean. When Treta Yuga came, their age was reduced to 10,000 years. People became rich. Guru ji gave them wisdom according to their situation. Along with the Simran of the Naam, they were told to do Yagnas. By doing this, this Dharma broke the bonds of the world. Many did Yagnas and Simran to be saved in that Yuga. Dwapur then came. People live till 1,000 years. They had to do Pooja with the Simran of the Naam. The Giver of joy gave this wisdom. Many wise people were saved like this. In the 3 Yugas, the people were stronger and lived longer. Strength, wealth and age was a lot. Guru ji saw Kaliyuga without these 3 things. The pain had grabbed the humans. The poor were given the wisdom of the Naam of the Parmeshwar. The Guru, the Master of the Universe, was the Vaid. People didn’t have the wisdom. They couldn’t learn Sanskrit. The Satguru gave the wisdom in the language of the people. He gave us the money needed to buy the ajwain. It was hard to learn and understand Sanskrit. They wouldn’t have been able to understand the glory of the Naam that was engrained in the Vedas. For this reason, Satguru ji uttered the Bani from his mouth. He wrote it for the people. Just as the cloud drinks water from the ocean, to become generous to the people, the ocean water is salty, the clouds make the water sweet and rain over the different lands; Jeevs and animals are in joy then, the pain runs away; the Vedas and Puranas are great like the ocean; they are difficult to consume like salty water; the people don’t know what is more important and what is not so important in the Vedas and Puranas. The cream of the Vedas and Puranas; Guru ji is the cloud that has picked up only the water from the ocean and not the salt. He made the language easy for all the lands to understand. The language that is easy for all men and women; king and pauper; high class and low class; they can read it and earn it in the world.” Bhai Bala ji said: “listen oh listeners, the one Naam is the Giver of Mukti. Let go of your ego and do the Simran with focus. You will break the bonds of the world. Where there is ego, Naam won’t be able to stay there. Where there is Naam, ego runs away. These are not my words. This is what Sri Satguru ji, the Giver of Mukti, said.”
1-53 Sudhar Sain
The feet of Sri Guru ji are my support as they are strong like the mountain. I would never let them go, not even by mistake. The obstacles are like the wind, which the mountain does not fear.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Listen Sri Guru Angad Dev ji to the history of the Guru. It is filled with many virtues. The Compassionate One travelled on after meeting Naarad ji. We soon reached an island in the ocean. The name of the island was Bisihar. There was a beautiful city within the island. It was filled with many gardens. There was a great fort built around the city. It was as though the fort wanted to stop the clouds. Sudhar Sain was the king of that nation. He ruled the big city. The Tika of the Bedi clan saw a beautiful spot and sat down. We spent the night there. In the morning, Bhai Mardana ji said: “please give me permission to go into the city. I will ask for food and eat.” Guru ji laughed and said to me: “what is Mardana saying?” I said: “this is his personality from birth. It cannot change after many tries.” Sri Guru ji said: “listen Mardana, who will you ask for food and eat from?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “I will go whom you give permission for. I will go there. I don’t know anyone here.” Guru ji said: “there is a Tarkhan here, named Pakhar. His son is named Jhanda. He is a good worker. Go to his home and get food.” Bhai Mardana ji heard this and set off.
Bhai Mardana ji went into the city. He looked around for about 1 Ko. He met a person who asked him: “who are you and why are you here? What is your Varna and where are you going?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “tell me where Jhanda lives. He will ask me everything.” The person who met Bhai Mardana ji was named Inder Sain. He took him to Bhai Jhanda ji. Bhai Jhanda ji was making a Manji (bed). He saw Bhai Mardana ji and got up with respect. He laid out a bed for him to sit on. He showed a lot of love. Inder Sain said: “this person was looking for you. I was asking him about him but he didn’t tell me anything. I brought him here. He has some work with you. He came to your home for this.” Bhai Jhanda ji said: “where did you come from? What is your name and caste?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “my name is Mardana and I am a Doom Marashi. I was sent to you by Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, the mine of virtues.” Bhai Jhanda ji said: “I have never heard that name before. I have never heard “Nanak.” I have never heard his name nor have I ever seen him before. I just heard his name now.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “you don’t know him but he knows you. Come with me. You will see him. He will recognize you. You will recognize him. You must know him. Without knowing him, why would he send me to you? Who has done this before?” Bhai Jhanda ji was wise. He said: “how does he dress? What tradition does he follow? I will go to him with a loving gift.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “he is called “Nanak Tappa,” in this world. He is great. He dresses as an Udaasi. His Darshan destroys the gravest of sins.” Bhai Jhanda ji thought about this. He thought to himself: “he must be a great saint.” He told his wife to make food. Inder Sain went to his home. Bhai Jhanda ji came to the garden. He collected flowers and fruits from the garden. Bhai Mardana ji saw this and said: “who was that who brought me to your home? He was handsome and nice. He brought me to your home. His personality was nice. He spoke sweetly. He made me happy with his welcoming nature.” Bhai Jhanda ji said: “he is the nephew of the king of our city. He is a good friend of mine. We do Bhagti together. We sing the praises of Prabhoo together. This is our daily task. We do it alone with love. We have discussions about the Aatma together. We then practice together. This makes love grow for Sri Prabhoo ji in our hearts. This gives us joy.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “you are great! You are the saints who are beloved to the Sri Prabhoo. You are wise and have coloured your minds with the love of Bhagti. You get together and do the Satsang. If the food is ready, we should quickly take it.” Bhai Jhanda ji got ready and took the food with him.
Bhai Jhanda ji put a plate on top of his head with the food in it. He walked behind Bhai Mardana ji. He asked about Guru Nanak Dev ji: “which language does he love?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “when you meet him, say the name of Kartaar.” Where Guru Nanak Dev ji was sitting, the two had arrived. Bhai Jhanda ji said: “Sri Kartaar, Kartaar ji.” He placed the food in front of Guru ji and sat down with joy. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji said: “Jhanda, listen with your ears: why did you bring this food? What is your task?” Bhai Jhanda ji said: “Parmeshwar has sent you. I brought the food from home. Sant ji, please have the food. Complete my wish.” Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “can you recognize the Parmeshwar? Whom the great Munnis search for and say “Nayt, Nayt,” (not this, not this) do you know him?” Bhai Jhanda ji said: “listen Sant ji, we meet and sing his praises. We wish to find him. When we meet the complete Guru, he will show us our Aatma.” Sri Guru ji said: “who do you meet for Sangat?” Bhai Jhanda ji said: “he is the son of the king’s sister. We get together and do Bhagti of Parmeshwar everyday.” Sri Guru ji said: “this food you brought, divide it into 5 parts. One part will be given to Mardana. Call Inder Sain. Then I will eat your food.” Bhai Jhanda ji obeyed and divided the food into 5. One part was given to Bhai Mardana ji. Bhai Mardana ji said: “no, no; you eat first.” Guru ji said: “eat. You are hungry. Don’t refuse it.” Bhai Mardana ji ate the food. The other 4 parts were placed there.
Bhai Jhanda ji went to call Inder Sain. Sudhar Sain was his Mamma (maternal uncle). Inder Sain was sitting in the garden. Bhai Jhanda ji said: “the Dhyana you do for the Gyaan, I have met the complete saint, the giver of Mukti. Come quick. He is calling for you. He won’t eat food without you.” Inder Sain was surprised and happy. It was as though a thirsty person got Amrit. He got up and quickly went with him. They both had love in their hearts.
Where Guru Nanak Dev ji, the Tika of the Bedis, the two men came. Inder Sain did his Darshan. They both bowed to Guru ji’s feet and sat down with love in their hearts. They both made requests, who had no vices in their hearts: “if you have the complete Gyaan, give is your wisdom, quickly. We had desired it for a long time. Kill our doubts. Give us the Gyaan Anand. Bless us, oh saint. We have forgotten our real form for millions of births. We have forgotten our real form. Show us the real form so we don’t come back here; so we see joy and sorrow as the same; which is without conflict; without attachment and hatred.” Guru ji heard this and spoke to break the doubts of the Bhagats: “if you wish for Gyaan Anand and be focused into your real self; then first give the Guru Dakshina. You can then get the Gyaan. You can listen to it. See the whole world as Asatya (false). Give me all that. The true Vichaar (the knowledge of Jeev, Ishwar, Sat and Asat) and the Vairagya (to not wish for any material thing), if you have this and generosity, you will get Gyaan by yourself. The great Anand comes to them. The ones who don’t have these virtues but wish for Gyaan, it is useless to give them wisdom. They are always clinging onto the worldly things. For this reason, you will be tested first and then given wisdom. In benevolence, you will get everything. Only then will you get the Gyaan.” Bhai Jhanda ji and Bhai Inder Sain ji both said: “our money, wealth, home and everything else, we place it all at your feet. We won’t touch anything. Whatever is ours, is now yours.” Sri Guru ji spoke: “what is left with you now?” They thought hard and then gave an answer with patience: “we have our bodies. We have nothing left with us.” The light of the Bedis then spoke: “think about this hard. These bodies of yours will not last forever. For this reason, give me the bodies as well and then listen to the Gyaan.” Both obeyed and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. They gave their bodies. Guru ji then said: “what do you have left now? Think about it and then tell me.” They both heard this and said: “we only have our Antiskaran (Chit, Munn, Bhuddi, Ahankaar) left now. We have nothing else left. We have stated everything we thought we had.” Guru ji then said: “the Antiskaran is also made of the 5 Primal elements. Whatever is made of the Asatya (not infinite/ not true) how can it make anything that is infinite? The Antiskaran you speak of, give me that as well. Forget about that too. You will then immerse with Gyaan Anand. If you have any doubts then tell me.” When Guru Nanak Dev ji said this, the two gave their minds and wisdoms to the feet of the Guru. They had now given their wealth, body and mind. Guru ji then said: “the doubt you may have, say it now.” Both of them thought about what to say. They were about to ask but Guru ji interrupted: “the thought they you had, came from your Munn (mind). You had already given me your Munn. Why are you using the mind for your own use now? What you gave to the Guru, you have no reason to use that anymore. Don’t think of anything now as that is the Dharma of the Munn.” The two thought and made a decision that they couldn’t think of anything. They made a decision: “we gave Guru ji our Munns, we can’t use it now.” Guru ji knew what they were thinking. Guru ji said: “how are you making a decision? This is done by the Bhuddi. You gave me the Bhuddi as well. How can you do that?” When the two heard this, they remembered what they did. They were fortunate. Guru ji said: “you are trying to remember. That is done by the Chit. That is its Dharma. You gave me that as well. How can you use your Chit now?” The both thought with their egos, their sense of existence: “WE gave our Munn, Bhuddi and Chit-“ Guru ji interrupted their thought: “you’ve given me your egos, Ahankaar. You gave that already. This is part of the 4 divisions of the Antiskaran. You gave them to me. Think about it. If there is something above this, then ask. I will tell you.” When they heard this, Inder Sain thought about this: “what else am I made of? I am not my wealth, body, Munn, Bhuddi, Chit or Ahankaar. Who am I?” As soon as he realized this, he went into Samadhi. He saw his Aatma. It was the unlimited and blissful form. In this way Guru ji gave the Aatam Gyaan to both. Guru ji then said: “now we can eat!” I got permission and gave the food to everyone.
Sri Guru ji took the food in his hands and ate the food, seeing the Bhagti of his servants. Where a great saint was met, that is where Sri Prabhoo ji ate. Otherwise Guru ji just ate the wind. The one who destroyed the sins, he ate half his food. He gave half his food to Bhai Jhanda Baadi ji. Bhai Jhanda Baadi ji ate the food of Guru ji. As soon as he put the food in his mouth, his deepest Kapaats opened up and he saw the full form of his Aatma. His doubts and attachments were destroyed. The effect of Maya was destroyed. The sense of duality was broken. We went into Samadhi. His sense of his body’s existence was gone. Both Sikhs sat in Samadhi. They were still. They experienced the bliss of the Aatma which was priceless. They sat like this for 9 hours.
When it was around 2 am, Guru ji got up to bathe. Sri Suriya then came up. Guru ji spoke up and took the two out of their Samadhis. Their desires were all gone. The Master of the Universe spoke in a sweet voice: “Inder Sain, I will give you the Manjhi of this land. You are the Guru of this land now.” Bhai Inder Sain ji folded his hands and said: “oh form of Kartaar, Mine of Virtues; I have no more desires. I will do as you say. I do not see the existence in past, present or future. Just as the colour black exists in the Kaajal, I see the Parmatma as the only One. I received this wisdom from you.” When Guru ji saw Bhai Inder Sain ji’s state, he determined that he was over the world now. Guru ji gave the Manjhi to Bhai Jhanda ji then. He was the Satguru of the land. Guru ji sent him to his land.
This news spread in Bisihar. People talked and the news reached Raja Sudhar Sain: “a Tappa Sadhoo has come and is sitting outside of the city. He has made Jhanda Baadi the Satguru.” The Raja heard this and sent a person where Bhai Jhanda ji and Bhai Inder Sain ji were. The person came and saw everyone. He did Guru ji’s Darshan. He said to the people sitting: “who is the Tappa out of you the one named “Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji?” The king is calling him.” Bhai Inder Sain ji spoke: “I will go with you to the Raja. I will tell him everything.” He said to Guru ji: “I will come back to you.” Guru ji said: “why are you going? Don’t worry and stay here.” Bhai Inder Sain ji said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, listen oh Giver of Mukti: the Raja is my Mamma, my maternal uncle. He does not know of your greatness. Please give me permission so I can tell him. I can tell him the good tradition by which it will be good for him too.” Bhai Inder Sain ji went.
Bhai Inder Sain ji met the Raja and said: “go to his shelter. The saint is the form of Kartaar. He can complete the empty and empty the complete. He can establish the unestablished and ruin the established. He can make the small, big and make the big, small. He is omnipotent. Understand him oh Raja.” The Raja said: “I will do as you say. How do I go to his shelter? I have heard of his greatness. I wish to see him.” Bhai Inder Sain ji said: “take some gifts for him. Leave your ego here. Take fruits for him. Bow to his feet.” The Raja listened to his nephew. He knew that it was for his good.
The Raja took fruit and went to see Guru ji. He walked barefoot along with his servants and ministers. He came with love and devotion. He folded his hands and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. He laid down in the Ashtanga way. He didn’t get up. Guru ji patted the Raja on the back and said: “get up Raja. You will be radiant. The 17 kings around you, you will be the biggest one. They will come and bow to your feet. If they don’t, they won’t be able to fight you.” When Guru ji saw the Raja’s love, he blessed him with a bigger kingdom. The Raja was happy with the boons. He saw Guru ji as the Parmeshwar. He folded his hands and said: “come to my city and home.” Guru ji stayed there for 1 month. He completed the tasks of his servants. He did Keertan and Katha for that time. Guru ji said: “listen Raja, don’t compare yourself to Jhanda. If you want what is good for you, always bow to him and be humble in front of him. He will spread Sikhi in the whole land.” The whole country bowed to Bhai Jhanda ji. Naam, donations and bathing; this wisdom was given to all. People did this, seeing how this was good for them. They worked honestly and donated their earnings.
Guru ji then wished to go forward. The Raja got news of this and spoke with sadness: “the elephants, horses, kingdom and wealth that I have; please give this to Jhanda and take me with you. I won’t be able to live without you, oh Master of the Universe. Just as a fish cannot survive without water, I won’t survive without you.” His eyes began to shed tears and his throat swelled up with emotion. His body trembled. Guru ji noticed the Raja’s state. He saw his true love. Guru ji said: “focus your attention on me. I will always be by your side. Prepare Panchamrit with purity and cleanliness; do an Ardaas by placing a Takka. I will come to you and complete your wishes.” Guru ji gave him hope. The people of the land along with Bhai Jhanda ji were given hope. Guru ji then continued with his travels from there.
1-54 Madhurbain/ Devloot Rakshish
Guru ji’s feet are like the lion. I have run to them and seek their protection. The Jumm is like the vulture, completely powerless in front of the lion.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Listen to the Kath Sri Guru Angad Dev ji. This Katha fulfills all of the wishes. After giving hope to Raja Sudhar Sain, the Deep and Wise Satguru set forth on his travels. He travelled on the ocean like he travelled on land. The water didn’t touch his feet. He spoke as he walked. He loved to joke around with us. He made us laugh. We soon reached an island in the sea. Guru ji entered the island. About 6 km in, there was a beautiful city with strong walls. The Giver of Mukti sat just outside the city. He didn’t go into the city. We spent 3 days in the jungle. Bhai Mardana ji then said: “please give me permission to go into the city. I will see the city and come back, quickly.” Guru ji laughed and said: “Mardana is hungry.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “well, you don’t get hungry nor do you get thirsty. I get hungry. How can we be together? I stay with you, being stubborn. Let me go and find food.” Sri Guru ji said: “be content. Sri Kartar will satiate your hunger. Don’t make an effort and disturb your mind. Whatever is in your destiny, you will get it here.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “what is the name of this city?” Sri Guru ji said: “this city is called “Brahmpura.” The Raja of the city is a Brahmin. He rules the whole island.” Guru ji and Bhai Mardana ji were speaking. As they spoke, many fawns passed by. The fawns saw Guru ji and lifted their ears. They got scared and ran off. There were boars behind them. It was like Raho chasing the moon. The boars were black. Behind the boars were hunting dogs, running fast. Behind the dogs were hunters, holding nets. They had different types of hawks and other hunting birds. They had hunted many smaller birds. There were men on horses and behind them was the Raja. The Raja was radiant. Where the Light of the Bedis was sitting, the Raja came there and stood there. The Raja said to Bhai Mardana ji: “who are you, sitting in the jungle all alone?” Bhai Mardana ji was upset. He was hungry. He got angry when the Raja asked him. He said: “do you not have eyes? We are humans!” The name of the Raja was Madhurbain. He said: “are you Sadhoos?” Bhai Mardana ji spoke out of anger: “what do you see with your eyes? Of course we are Sadhoos.” Bhai Mardana ji looked with sharp eyes as he turned his head. He didn’t say anything again. Bhai Mardana ji was not happy. He sat with his head lowered. Listen Guru Angad Dev ji, Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji wasn’t saying anything. Bhai Mardana ji was angry out of hunger. I thought and then spoke: “we are from a land far away. We don’t know anybody here. We dress like saints and are looking around. We look for good and bad places.” Madhurbain thought to himself: “I have heard news from the other island about a Tappa named Guru Nanak Dev ji had come. He made Jhanda the Satguru. Sudhar Sain was given a boon for a bigger kingdom.” Madhurbain asked to confirm: “what is your name and where are you from? Where are you going? Whose dress do you wear?” I said: “my name is Bala. This is Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, the Benevolent. This is Mardana. We are from Madhur Desh. We serve the Lotus feet of Sri Guru ji. We wish to be Mukat.” Madhurbain got happy to hear Guru ji’s name. He was sure that it was him. He got off his horse and folded his hands. He became humble and bowed to the Master of the Universe. He made a request full of love: “oh Mine of Virtues, come to my city. There are many beautiful houses there. Please set foot there and make the city pure. I will make food for you. Many fruits will be brought. Take the colourful clothes from me. Wear them and bless me. It is your wish what you want to do. I can bring everything here for you. Whatever you command, I will do.” Guru ji heard the king and then spoke:
Bilawal Mahala 1..
The Naam is the biggest treasure which gives everything..
Hunger and nakedness have been destroyed, the Naam made us its own..1..
Never leave the Naam. It is always with us..
Nobody is asked for the accounting, my beloved friend..1..Rahao..
the great food I have eaten by the grace of saints..
I drank the cold water of truth, it made my heart calm..2..
My clothes; that is to recognize the Brahm, with my body..
84 Lakh species, there is only One which is without end..3..
Nanak says, listen King, this whole universe is false..
Whatever you see will cease to exist; only the Ekankaara will remain..4..
(Sri Nanak Parkash Granth)
The Raja heard this with humility. He folded his hands and said: “please give me wisdom. See me as deserving of Mukti.” The Raja bowed over and over again. He made many requests with his heart. The Lotus-faced saw the Raja as deserving of Mukti. He wanted to give him wisdom: “see the world as an illusion. It is a myth. Do the Simran of Satnam, all the time. Karmas, Dharma, Tapp and many types of Nems; these are all fruitless without the One Naam. Listen to the example: just as everything is fruitless without Naam, similarly it is like not writing the 1 on a piece of paper. You may love to write zeros. Nothing will be achieved with writing zeros. Everything is useless, getting the paper and getting the ink. The wise person came and wrote 1. After that, writing zeros are not fruitless. Once you write 1, each zero makes it grow by 10. The Naam is like the 1. The Tapps, Poojas, fasts, Japps, and other Karmas, these are like the zeros. The person will get rewards, ten times as much. That person will receive Mukti and not go to the Jumms. For this reason, the Naam is the supreme. Let go of everything and do the Simran. Listen Madhurbain, the Munn is like an animal which wanders for green grass. It lets go of its own place to find green grass. The Munn does the same thing. The fields of pleasures and vices, that is where the Munn runs to. The Guru’s Shabad is like the chain for the animal. Whoever used this chain, their Munn did not run away. They followed the Guru’s way. They went to Hari’s court, easily.” When the Raja heard this, he went into Samadhi. Prema Bhagti sprouted in his heart. His mind became attracted to the Sadhsangat. He said to Sri Guru ji: “please come to my city where there are many beautiful homes.”
Guru ji came into the city. A beautiful bed was laid out for Guru ji. Many beautiful sheets were laid out. Guru ji sat on the bed. The Raja had Guru ji stay there. He knew Guru ji was omnipotent. Guru ji started the tradition of Satsangat and destroyed the bad wisdom of his people. Prema Bhagti was spread in all of the hearts of the people. The whole Island did Simran of the Naam. Madhurbain let his ego go. He did the Seva of Satguru ji’s feet with love. He broke his bonds of attachment towards the world. Aatam Gyaan illuminated in his heart. He was blessed. He had a Dharmsala made. Langar was started there. Everyone came and ate Langer without fear.
After a few days, Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji said to the Raja: “stay under the command of Sudhar Sain. Go and give him some gifts and follow his rule.” Madhurbain said: “I will do as you say. I will obey your command. Who would disobey you? We will all go.” Guru ji said: “I need to go now. I wish to see other lands as well.” The Raja wanted to keep Guru ji and said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, see me as your servant. Recognize your Dharma, as you are the lover of your servants. Give us your Darshan for more days. Bless us and stay here.” Guru ji agreed and stayed for a few more days. He then set forth and continued his travels.
Guru ji travelled on the ocean. Bhai Mardana ji and I travelled behind him. Satguru ji laughed and joked with us. We walked for 3 days and then reached a new place. It was a big island. It had many mountains. The place was called Devgandhaar where big Rakshishes lived. Guru ji saw a nice place near a mountain and sat down there. After about an hour and a half, Bhai Mardana ji spoke: “there are a lot of mountains on this island. Is there a village here or not? It seems scary everywhere I look. It just seems like a bunch of ruins and jungles.” Guru ji laughed and said: “your wish to always see cities. Wherever we go, you always ask about the city’s name. You never stay quiet.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, I am hungry. I haven’t eaten anything. It’s making me anxious. I haven’t eaten for 3 days. I asked you today. Please be afraid of the Lord. If I ask, you say that I always ask about the cities. I only get food in limited places. I am still travelling with you, being stubborn. You are making fun of me and taunting me now. How will I get along with you? I am anxious because of hunger. You keep laughing at me.” Sri Guru Angad Dev ji, listen oh Compassionate One; I laughed and said: “Guru ji, Mardana is speaking the truth. It’s his birth right to keep speaking. Hunger makes him anxious. Why wouldn’t he ask about cities. How can he be patient?” Guru ji said: “listen Mardana, this city has people like Koda living here. The one that threw you in a hot cauldron, like that. Sri Kartaar saved you there. If you want to go, then go ahead. Sri Prabhoo ji will protect you.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “this city can burn. I will never go to see this city. My pranas were saved before. These people will catch me and eat me.” The complete Guru laughed and said: “you should go to this city. Without going, my task won’t be complete here. Go today.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “Prabhoo, listen to me. Looks like you are angry at me and that’s why you want me to go to the Rakshishes. They will eat me. I won’t survive then. You want me to go to the city. I don’t want to go. If you want me to die, then just kill me.” In this way, they all laughed and joked around. The Giver of Peace to saints, he spoke to us.
The king of the Rakshishes came out with his hunting party. He came out with the intention to hunt. He had his whole army of Rakshishes with him. He had 1.7 million Rakshishes with him. They were all very tall and wide. They were ugly and dark. It was like a black storm coming. Their teeth looked like white birds flying. Their nostrils and ear holes were deep like wells. Their eyes were red like blood. Their hairs were like metal wires. They wore malas of bones around their necks. The mountain near Sri Guru ji, a little away from there was a hill. Bhai Mardana ji got on top of the hill and saw the Rakshishes. He was afraid to death. He went pale and began to tremble. He couldn’t say anything. He thought to himself: “we are dead. We can’t be saved now. He signaled to Guru ji with his hands: “do something! The Rakshishes will eat us. I am going to die. I’m sure of that.” As the Rakshishes came closer, Bhai Mardana ji got even more scared. He couldn’t run anywhere. He couldn’t get up. We weren’t looking. Bhai Mardana ji wanted to see where to run. Guru ji saw that Bhai Mardana ji wanted to run. The Destroyer of Fear spoke: “Mardana, be patient and say the Name of Sri Prabhoo ji. Be fearless and watch the drama.” Guru ji went quiet after. The Raja of the Rakshishes saw us and was happy. He said to his army, who wished to be violent: “it has been a long time since we saw a good hunt. We haven’t had human in a long time. There are 3 humans near the mountain. Go and catch them. Make sure they don’t run away.” The Rakshishes heard this. 3 of them came to where the Light of the Bedis was sitting. When they came close to Guru ji, the foolish unwise Rakshishes became blind. They couldn’t find their way. They tripped around. Prabhoo ji saw them and laughed. When they went back, they were able to see a little.
The 3 Rakshishes went back and told their king: “when we came close to the humans, we couldn’t see anymore. We were shock to notice this.” The King of the Rakshishes got angry and said: “what happened to your eyes?” 3 others were sent in their place. They quickly ran towards us and also went blind. When they backed off, they could see again. They said to the king: “listen, we couldn’t see when we went close to them. We could see when we backed off. This is surprising. We don’t know what happened.” The Raja was surprised. In anger, he sent 3 others. The next 3 had the same experience. He did this 7 times in total. The Raja was surprised. He said to his minister: “what is this surprising thing? I don’t understand this. I sent them 7 times but they all had the same experience.” The minister said: “listen to me: one of them is powerful. If it be your command, I can go and test them.” The minister got permission and came. He made his mind pure. He didn’t have deception in his mind. He said in his mind: “Sant ji, I will do your Seva. I wish to see you. I have faith in my heart.” He folded his hands and came. He came to the Master of the Universe. The minister had love in his heart and saw that it was Parmeshwar himself. He bowed and sat down. He spoke with respect: “what is your name and where are you from? It seems as though Sri Kartaar has come as a human. Where are you going?” The Master of the World said: “my name is Nanak Nirankari. I travel with my own wish. I am a Tyagi.” The minister bowed and went back to his king with love.
The minister said to the Raja: “the Kartaar has come to your land. Go to his sanctuary. You will be saved. Destroy the doubts of your mind. Don’t see yourself as the king. Go and meet him with love. Raja Devloot heard this and said: “humans are my food. I won’t go to his sanctuary. I can’t listen to you. I will see how he looks.” Devloot walked ahead. The other Rakshishes came ahead. It looked like a black mountain walking. When the Raja and the others came close, they all went blind. Only the minister could see. The others were tripping around. They bumped into things. The minister then said: “Raja, how are you? You aren’t walking straight. Listen to what I said.” The Raja got scared. He was embarrassed and said: “oh minister, I will do as you say. He is a complete saint. If he gives me his Darshan, I will go to his feet and seek his sanctuary. I will do his Seva with devotion. I will do Simran of his name.” the Raja became humble. The minister saw the Raja’s pure soul. The minister folded his hands and said to Guru ji: “you are the complete being. You are indestructible. You cut the bonds of Jumms and give Mukti. You are the saint that gives peace. The Raja has faith now. Bless the Raja now and give him your Darshan.” Guru ji heard the pure-hearted minister and spoke: “oh Bhoopat, open your eyes. Look at me. I am sitting next to you.” When Devloot heard Guru ji’s voice, he could see again. When he saw the Lotus-body of Guru ji, he bowed to Guru ji’s feet with love. He saw Guru ji as omnipotent. He sat down and said: “I made a mistake. I disrespected you. Please forgive me. Come to my city and stay there. The Rakshishes are all your servants.” They became humble and brought Guru ji to the city. There was a beautiful home in the middle. Guru ji stayed there. The Rakshishes served Guru ji and bowed to him over and over again.
1-55 Devloot/ Banmaanas/ Rakshish
Sri Guru ji’s feet are like the Garud. They cut the snake-like bonds of the world. The ones who go to their shelter, they are freed from the bonds of the world and receive Mukti.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
Listen Guru Angad Dev ji, oh Giver of Mukti, listen to the beautiful katha of Guru ji. Raja Devloot called his servants and had 7 Rakshishes sent to the jungle. He had them fetch sweet fruits from the gardens. Other foods like flour and lentils were called for. Everything was placed in front of Guru ji. The Raja folded his hands and said: “please cook your food and eat, Sant ji. Make what you wish and eat it. Fulfill our wish to eat the food.” Sri Guru ji said: “if you follow my wisdom, then I will accept your offerings and eat the food. I won’t eat your food if you don’t accept this. You kill other life forms.” Devloot said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, I will obey your command. I will live by your guidelines. What wisdom you give, I will do as you say.” Guru ji saw the Raja as humble. Guru ji spoke to destroy the bad wisdom: “first let go of eating flesh. You kill other life forms for your life. Do the Simran and be in joy forever. The Naam will assist you in both worlds. A long time ago, among your kind, was a Bhagat named Prahlad ji. He did the Simran of the Naam. He was protected in both worlds. His Katha continues to be said today. His father was Haranakash, who gave him pain. Prahlad ji still did not give up the Name of the Prabhoo. He did the Bhagti of Prabhoo with determination and focus. You should do the same. Look at another one of your kind; Bibheekhan ji’s Katha is said till today as well. His brother was Raavan. Ram Chandar ji killed Raavan and Bibheekhan was praised. Bibheekhan was Ram Chander ji’s Bhagat. He was given the kingdom of Lanka and made immortal. Look at those great beings. You should do the same and become faithful. For some sins, you became Rakshishes. If you continue to sin, now, you will go to Hell and be in extreme pain. Nobody will be able to help you then. Let go of your Tamsik ways and do the Bhagti of Kartaar, which gives peace.” Devloot discarded his ego and said: “I am in your command. I won’t waiver. Doing your Darshan, my wish to do sins was destroyed. Hearing your wisdom, I wish to do Simran. Your feet are where my love resides now. I am fortunate today.”
Listen Guru Angad Dev ji, Guru ji said to me: “get the food ready.” I prepared the food. The form of Kartaar ate the food. The Raja of the Rakshishes sat down with his minister. He was drenched in love. Guru ji ate half of his food and gave the rest to Devloot and the minister. They both obeyed and ate the food of Guru ji. As soon as they ate the food, the doors of their 5 Koshes opened. The door of doubt, that was closed for a long time, burst open. They became deserving of Mukti. The minister and the Raja stayed with Guru ji for a few days. The tradition of Sikhi was started there. The Rakshishes were all made to do Simran of the Naam. They stopped eating flesh and the killing of other life forms. They started to sit in Satsangat, the garden of joy. When Guru ji got ready to leave, the Flag of the Bedis said: “Sudhar Sain, the great king, Devloot, go to his shelter and follow his rule. Don’t be violent. Do the Simran of the Guru. The pain will be destroyed.” Devloot said: “the soil on your feet is greater than me. I do not have power to eat a piece of grass anymore. Listen to me Sri Guru ji, I will obey your command with my head. Sudhar Sain is now my master.”
The Rakshishes all got together when Guru ji was leaving. They all bowed to Guru ji’s feet. They all said: “Dhan Sri Guru Nanak Dev Sahib ji.” They did Guru ji’s Simran. Guru ji, the Mine of Virtues, left that place.
Sometimes we travelled on water and sometimes on land. Guru ji walked in the same way on water as he did on land. We soon reached a thick jungle. The jungle was filled with flowers and fruits. It was a really big jungle. Guru ji arrived there and saw groups of Banmaanas (ape-like humans). They had long hairs and stayed naked. They were black and scary looking. Their mentality was like animals. When Bhai Mardana ji saw them he got scared and said: “what problems are these walking around in the jungle? I am scared seeing them.” Guru ji, the moon-faced One, spoke: “they are Banmaanases. Why are you scared?” When the Banmaanases saw us, they got scared and ran away. Only one stayed. I spoke to that one: “who are you and what is your story?” The Banmaanas yelled out like an animal. I didn’t understand anything. I then asked Guru ji: “why does he not speak in words? They look like us. They look like humans but ran away, seeing us.” Sri Guru ji said: “that is how they speak. They don’t speak like humans. They are unwise like animals. Some are aware of themselves but most are not.” The one that stood, he went away to get sweet fruits for us. He was afraid of us. He left the fruits for us at a distance. He gave us a signal, indicating to us that the fruits he brought are for us and then ran away as well. He went to his people. Prabhoo ji picked up the fruits and said: “Mardana, eat this.” Bhai Mardana ji obeyed and ate the sweet fruit. When he was satiated, Guru ji blessed them and went on ahead.
We continued our travels. Sometimes walking on the ocean and sometimes walking through islands. After a few days of walking, Bhai Mardana ji got hungry and became anxious. We came across a dense jungle with many fruit trees. The leaves and fruits were beautiful. Guru ji went inside the dense tree lines. The trees were big. There was not a single bird though. There were no vultures, lions, panthers, deer, boar, rabbits or elephants. There was no other life form there. There was nothing all around. The Head of the Bedis found a nice shade and sat down. After an hour, Bhai Mardana ji said: “I am hungry and anxious. Please give me permission to eat these fruits. It’s been many days since I ate anything. I didn’t get food anywhere. This jungle has many fruits. The fruits look sweet and filled with juice.” Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji heard this and said: “stay here. This jungle is not good. Look how there’s nothing around. It’s empty. There is no animal nor bird. There is no human found here. Stay patient and sit near me.” Guru ji went quiet after. Bhai Mardana ji became angry and spoke harshly: “where food comes to my hand, you stop me from going near it. It seems like you hate me and want to kill me. How can I live in this world without eating? Oh Khuddah, where are you going to kill me? I will die without a shroud. I won’t get a grave either. I will stay laying here, dead on the ground. I was a Doom and I made a good living. I used to ask from my masters. I used to sit in my home in peace. I would meet my family and was happy. He (Guru ji) himself is ruined from his home and now has ruined me too. There are fruits on the trees near me. I can be satiated eating them. He doesn’t let me eat them. He thinks my hunger is like his. I can’t tolerate this deep hunger. He is always laughing at me. He doesn’t know how hungry I am. He doesn’t let me eat fruits.” In this way, he spoke harsh words in anger. Bhai Mardana ji went to the jungle and began to eat the sweet fruits without permission. He got angry and went far into the deep jungle.
As Bhai Mardana ji went into the jungle, there was a scary Daynt there. The Daynt had eaten many elephants and deer. The Daynt ate every animal within the 200 Kos. Its body was like a huge mountain. Its arms were many Kos long. It had horns in its head like khajoors (dates). Its nostrils were like deep caves. He was licking his lips as he was hungry. He saw Bhai Mardana ji and grabbed him like an insect. He threw him in his mouth. Bhai Mardana ji got scared and couldn’t speak. He thought of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji in his mind: “oh Complete Satguru, protect me! Just like you saved the elephant, save me too! I am a fool, oh Prabhoo. I spoke harshly because of attachment. Remember your promise and save me from this Daynt. Don’t keep my harsh words in your heart. Forgive me and save me, oh Deenabandoo (friend of the weak). Protect my honour; you brought me with you. You are the master of the 3 Loks.” Guru ji was omniscient. He knew what had happened. Guru ji protected him from the Daynts teeth. Bhai Mardana ji was swallowed as a whole. He landed in the Daynt’s belly. He was saved from the teeth, like swallowing a grain in whole. He passed through the mouth.
Guru ji spoke to me: “Bala, stay here. The Daynt grabbed Mardana and swallowed him. I need to save him. Come there in a half an hour.” Guru ji spoke to me and left. He went to the Rakshish to save his servant. He was the complete Guru. Guru ji stood in front of the Daynt. The Daynt thought: “I see another.” He put Guru ji in his mouth as well. Guru ji came to the Daynt’s belly and met Bhai Mardana ji. It was like a cave. Guru ji gave hope to Bhai Mardana ji: “be patient.” Guru ji made his body big. The Daynt’s body was about 2 kos. Guru ji made himself the same size. When the Daynt’s body was about to burst, he made his body 1 Jozen big (4 kos). Guru ji made himself bigger as well. When the Rakshish felt pain, he grew to 2 Jozen. Guru ji kept growing to match him. The Daynt felt pain again and went to 9 Jozen. Prabhoo ji grew to the same size. Guru ji became as heavy and big as the Sumer Mountain. The Daynt became helpless and powerless. The Devatas stood in the sky to watch. They were yelling in disbelief. The Devatas thought that Guru ji was eaten. They did not know Prabhoo ji’s greatness either. The Daynt became anxious and lost the hope for his life. His eyes became red and burst. He fell backwards. It was like the Bindhyachal Parvat falling. He fell to the ground. The trees were squished. They became dust. His breath stopped. His Pranas left his body. The Devatas shouted Jaikaras and showered flowers onto Guru ji.
Guru ji took Bhai Mardana ji and came out of the body like Krishan came out of Panag along with the cow herders. The Daynt’s soul became a Devata. He had 4 arms and golden earrings. He wore yellow clothes. He was dark and beautiful. He bowed to Guru Nanak Dev ji and praised him: “oh Avatar of Kartaar, you came to Kaliyuga to make everyone do Simran of the Naam. You came to bless the sinners like me. You came to this world. You came to destroy the hypocrisy and show the righteous path. You will come in 10 Avatars. You will destroy the sinners and save the Hindu Dharma. You came as a Human to live in the world. The one who has faith in you, you will give them Mukti.”
We were shocked to see what had happened. Guru ji knew what we were thinking. Guru ji said to the Daynt: “who are you? Tell us everything.” The soul spoke: “my saviour Guru ji, when Raja Janak ji, the Mukat, was here, I was his cook and student. One day, Janak ji called saints to his home for food. I was commanded to make the food. I got hungry while cooking. I ate some food, without telling anyone. Raja ji found out that I ate before feeding the saints. He said: “you polluted the food by eating it first.” The food was thrown into the river. I was considered a sinner. I made a big mistake. He cursed me: “you will be a huge Rakshish.” I became humble and scared. I asked: “when will I be saved?” The raja said: “in Kaliyuga, Hari will come in the form of Guru Nanak Dev ji. He will make people do Simran of the Naam and save them. When you meet him, the curse will break.” Now that I met you, the curse is broken. The Rakshish body is gone.” He said this and bowed. He went to Vaikunth then. Bhai Mardana ji heard this and bowed. He said: “you are the master of the universe. I did not know your greatness. You saved me from the big Rakshish. He was so big. He crushed many trees to dust. He was 9 Jozen. He was saved. Tell me how? He was a sinner. He killed many. Now he is saved.” Guru ji spoke: “in his last birth, he served many saints. He did it for a long time. He now got the highest status. He is Mukat. His pain is gone. Doing the Seva of saints is never without fruit. Meeting saints and spending time with them, they are in peace in both worlds. The ones who do Simran, day and night, they kill their minds and receive Mukti. The glory of the Naam in Kaliyuga is as such. It is to sing the glory of Sri Prabhoo. The bonds of the world that give pain, there is no other solution for them other than serving the saints.” Giving wisdom to us both, Guru ji set forth. Santokh Singh thinks of the Guru’s feet and does their Simran.
