1-36 Mardana’s Hunger/ Taking Leave from Bebe ji
Sri Satguru ji’s feet are like the philosopher’s stone. My mind is like a rusty piece of iron. Touching Guru ji’s feet, one becomes gold and is not hurt from the pain by the Jumms. Guru ji sat in Samadhi for 2 days. His eyes did not bloom like a lotus. Mardana was hungry. He hadn’t eaten for 2 days. He thought he was going to die. Sitting in the jungle, there was no one around to give him food. There was cold water nearby. Mardana ji would go and drink the water when he would get thirsty. He was hungry but couldn’t leave. He thought to himself: “how will I stay with him? I am in pain with hunger. This will be a common thing. When he comes to his awareness, I will ask for leave. I will go back to my home. It’s hard to live with him. I am really hungry, which is making me anxious. I haven’t eaten anything. I can’t leave the Compassionate One though. This is a difficult situation I am in. I am stuck. I can’t stay and I can’t go.” He thought like this all night.
In the morning, the sun came up. Guru ji’s lotus-like eyes opened. He became aware of his body. He knew Mardana ji’s thoughts and spoke with concern: “tell me your concern. Your face looks sad.” Hearing Guru ji, Mardana ji said: “hunger and thirst is far from you. You are not affected by them because you are Parmeshwar. They both bother me though. You made these characteristics so you are not affected. I am human, I can’t tolerate hunger. I need food and clothes. I am really hungry. Prabhoo ji, how can I eat? You want to keep me with you, so make my hunger and thirst go away. 3 days have passed without food. My body is weak. How can I be satiated and how can I survive with you? I need food all the time. My body is weak and I have to walk with you. The path, we will always have to walk on foot.” Sir Guru Nanak Dev ji said: “listen Mardana with your ear, staying with me, it will always be like this. If you are good with this, then stay.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “make my hunger go away or give me food to eat. I can stay with you then. Otherwise I won’t be able to stay with you.” Guru ji said: “that’s up to the Kartaar. Kartaar is the one that does everything. With me, it will be like this. We will have to do with what we have. If it is your joy, then stay with me; otherwise, you can go home.” Bhai Mardana ji was in doubt. He remembered his wife and children. He said: “Prabhoo ji, give me permission to go home. I will give news of you to your parents.” Bhai Mardana ji got ready to go home. Guru ji said: “give this Rabab to my sister. Then you can go home.” Bhai Mardana ji heard the words and then left his presence.
Mardana ji went to the home of Bebe Nanaki ji. When Bebe Nanaki ji saw Bhai Mardana ji come, she was concerned. She laid out a bed and had Bhai Mardana ji seated with respect. She said: “you came after many days. Where were you? How much was this Rabab you are holding? It is beautiful. Where is my brother? The Lotus-bodied one, Giver of Mukti, where is he?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “I took leave from him and am going home to Talwandi. I can’t stay with him. He is the Avatar with powers. I can’t stay with him. Only an equal can stay with him. He never eats or drinks. I came to give you the Rabab. Do you have a message for your parents? I am going to Talwandi now.” When he said this, Bebe Nanaki ji heard this and began to shed tears from her eyes. The tears dropped on the ground. She lost her patience and was in pain. Her joy was gone. Her brother’s love was an ocean, in which she was immersed in. She couldn’t find the shore of Gyaan. The ship, Guru ji, was not close by which she would be saved. Dasi Tulsa was like the waves in the ocean. Tulsa gave her hope as Bebe ji cried. She wiped her tears and gave her hope with great effort: “don’t cry.” Bebe Nanaki ji was full of Gyaan. The glory of Guru ji’s love, Bebe ji was upset being away from her brother. Bhaiya Jai Ram ji was not home. As this was going on, Bhaiya ji came home and saw his wife crying. He asked Tulsa: “what’s wrong? Why is she crying, the daughter of Kalu?” Tulsa said: “Mardana is going back home and Bebe ji is upset. She is sad that her brother will be alone and will go away to far off lands. She is upset about separating form him. He has come to keep the Rabab here. This made her sad.” Bhaiya Jai Ram ji said: “let’s try to keep Mardana here. He can stay here so he doesn’t go home. He is upset as well.” Bebe ji said: “listen son of Aryan, if Mardana stays with my brother, he will keep him busy. He won’t go far away then. If he is alone, he will be upset and go to far away lands. He’s still here so we can see him. If he goes to another land, I won’t be able to see him again. This is why I am upset.” Bhaiya ji said: “you have faith in Guru ji. Your heart was still; like the Sumer Mountain. Today, doubt, the Vajjar, has moved the mountain. Your patience is gone today. You used to give me hope. Why are you in doubt today? Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is the support of all. His devotees know this. He doesn’t need any support. Mardana should stay in Sultanpur. We can try something. He seems upset as well. Why does he want to go to Talwandi.” Bebe ji said: “ask him why he is upset?” Bhaiya ji said: “listen Mardana, why do you want to go home? You have love for him. Why did you want to leave? Stay here. Don’t leave. Take what you need without delay.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “listen Jai Ram ji, I can’t stay with him. He is the powerful Avatar. He was in Samadhi for 3 days. I didn’t get any food to eat. He is never hungry or thirsty. I need food though. If I get food, I have no problems then. What will I get in the jungle?” Bhaiya ji said: “listen Mardana, try to make it work in any way you can. We will make the effort. Stay here. You can eat whenever you need to. Come here, day and night to eat. If you need to go somewhere with Guru ji, take money from us. You can buy food and eat it. Don’t go home. Stay here. Stay with Guru Nanak ji and be happy.” Bhai Mardana ji heard this and was happy. He decided to stay with Guru ji. He said: “I will do as you say. I won’t go home.” It was night and so Bhai Mardana ji stayed the night. Bebe Nanaki ji was really happy. It was like someone effected by the planets, was now cured. That’s how Bebe ji was. The pain was gone.
In the morning, Bhai Mardana ji said: “I am going to Guru Nanak Dev ji now.” Bebe ji said: “I am preparing food. Eat and satisfy your hunger.” Bhai Mardana ji obeyed and ate the food. He got ready to go to Guru ji. As he was leaving, Bhaiya ji gave the chola he was wearing to Bhai Mardana ji. Bhai Mardana ji was happy and wore the Chola. Bhaiya ji gave Bhai Mardana ji 20 Rajitpuns. Bebe Nanaki ji said: “I would like my brother to give me his Darshan. He is the house of virtues. I have no other wish in my heart. I wish to see him. May he come here with compassion. You can go to him now. Make sure he doesn’t leave.” Bhai Mardana ji put the Rabab on his shoulder and went to Guru Nanak Dev ji.
Bhai Mardana ji bowed to Guru ji and sat down. Guru ji said: “why did you bring the Rabab back?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “when I went to give the Rabab, your sister became sad. I told her I was going home. This made her upset. She began to cry. Jai Ram ji came and said: “stay in Sultanpur and eat food from our home.” He gave me his chola and 20 Rajitpuns. They gave me love and sent me to you. Your sister asker for your Darshan.” Guru ji said: “what nonsense did you do? You were after all acting like a Doom. My sister is raising my son, Sri Chand ji. You went to her and asked for money. This was not a good thing you did. Greed came into your heart. Obey me and give the money back to my sister. Don’t keep this money with you.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “I am not lying! I didn’t ask for the money. They gave it to me out of love. I brought it here. I will do what you say though. I will obey you. I will stay with you. Think about my food though.” Guru ji said: “don’t keep any hopes in life. This is a vice. Desires and hungers are never satiated. They make you go in doubt and wander from door to door. When desires arise, they make one ask from one and then go to a second. He then goes to a third with humility. From the fourth he becomes anxious. Desires make the person dependent. Only wish for the indestructible Parmeshwar. Destroy your other desires for begging. The Parmeshwar gives wherever a person is. He gives to insects within the rocks. He nurtures one in the womb. When one is born, he gives them food. The breast only gets milk when the baby is born. Understand this and be still. Be content with what you have. In water, land, rock, sky, the snakes in the copper earth; food is sent everywhere by the Parmeshwar. The life that walks and doesn’t walk (plants), he nurtures them all. Nobody is without food. Understand the Parmeshwar and let go of your doubt. The pain of desires, you are stuck in this.” When Bhai Mardana ji heard this, contentment came into his heart. The desires of many lives were gone with the Brahm Gyaan. Bhai Mardana ji said: “let’s go. Your sister called for you. I will go with you and give them back the money. I have decided all this right now.” Guru ji said: “I won’t return your words Mardana. I have a lot of work with you. Let’s go.”
Guru ji and Bhai Mardana went to his sister’s home. Tulsa Dasi saw them coming. She said: “my lady, your brother his here!” Bebe Nanaki ji was really happy to hear this. She was like the peacocks hearing the rumbling clouds. Bebe ji ran to Guru ji and bowed to his feet. She threw here Dharam away and didn’t care. She bowed to her younger brother. Guru ji grabbed her and lifted her up. He said: “the Param Purakh is the greatest. This is why I don’t come to your home. You always bow to my feet. I won’t come to your home from now on. This is a bad thing for me. It’s sinful for me for you to bow.” Bebe Nanaki ji said: “listen brother, I will obey what you say. Give me your Darshan all the time. Don’t forget me, ever. I do your Simran all the time. I think of when the Prabhoo will come. Be compassionate towards me.” The Lotus face one said: “when you wish to see me, I will come as soon as I can. If I am close or far, I won’t delay. Mardana, give the money to Bebe ji.” Bebe Nanaki ji said: “he didn’t ask for it. I gave him the money out of love.” Guru ji said: “you are the beloved Bhagat of Parmeshwar. He listens to you. Prabhoo listens to the elders. Give me to Kartar now. All will be well.” Bebe Nanaki ji said: “you must think I see you as my brother. I see you as the Supreme Parmeshwar. You are the complete and ancient Purakh. Don’t make me say this over and over again.” Guru ji said: “sister, take the money from me. Mardana is a Marashi of the Bedis. When he comes some other time, you can give him money. Take the money now. Don’t let him go empty-handed, any other time. You are the daughter of the Bedis. You are raising Sri Chand ji. I should be giving you. Give me permission with joy. I need to go to far off lands. Don’t worry about anything. Don’t think of anything. Have patience like the Earth. When you do my Simran, I will come to you. Don’t think I am lying.” The sister heard this and said: “you were living here and still didn’t come to my home. I had hope though. If you go to far away lands, I will lose my patience. I won’t know where you are. I won’t be able to see you. You are leaving our love. How can you like this? You know of every heart. Why don’t you stay with me?” Guru ji said: “this attachment is bad. You should let it go sister. The ones who are tied to attachment, they can never leave their homes. They are stuck in work 24 hours. Have patience and figure out the difference between Truth and false. I will come when you remember me. I wish to see the other lands but I want your permission.” Guru ji gave his sister hope. He said many other things. The money was returned to Bebe ji. Guru Nanak Dev ji took leave from his sister and set out to destroy the pain of others.
Guru ji and Bhai Mardana ji left. Bebe Nanaki ji cried. She couldn’t keep him. Kavi Santokh Singh ji says: “the Adhyaaya is complete. Remembering Guru ji, the pain is gone.”
1-37 The Compiling References of the Sri Guru Nanak Parkash Granth
Sri Guru Dev ji’s Katha is like the ocean and Bhai Bala ji is like the Mandrachal Mountain. My love is like Shaishnaag churning the block, churning the beauty of the Ocean. His glory is pure, joyful and Amrit. The Amrit has been taken out for the Devata Sikhs. The Daynts, the greedy worshipers of wealth Maya, they cause a lot of problems. Guru Angad Dev ji was like the Mohani Avatar, who gave the Amrit. The Daynts always cause problems. The Sikhs were given the Amrit. One receives Mukti by drinking this Amrit. It takes them to Sach Khand. The son of Hindhaal (a Brahmgyaani Sikh of Guru Amar Das ji) was like Rahu. His son wrote a Granth in opposition. The Katha was changed. He was like the Rahu who eclipsed the full moon-like glory of the Guru. Hindhaal ji’s son was a fool by his sins who changed the Katha of the Guru. The Guru’s glory cannot be made dirty. The Kavi, I (Kavi Santokh Singh ji), was saying the Katha to the Sikhs, that fulfilled the wishes. The listeners were in doubt listening to the Katha. They were filled with love and wanted to hear the Katha. They said to me: “the great Katha of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is in many Pothis. We have read something else but what you say is different. We are in doubt. Why do you say it different from how it is written in other Pothis? Tell us, so our doubt is gone. Tell us so that we may have a deep faith in the feet of the Guru.” I heard this and said: “your wisdom is great! Your doubt is valid, oh wise ones. Listen to the answer with focus: I will destroy your doubts first. I will then continue the Katha of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji later, the Sri Nanak Parkash Granth. The ones who have love for the feet of the Guru, they listen to and speak this Katha. Their doubt goes away. They don’t wander to other self-proclaimed Gurus then. They have faith on the lotus feet of the Guru. They don’t have faith on other Devatas or Devis. The one who serves the King only asks from the King. Why would they go to the servants? Only the sun can make the lotus bloom. Why would someone be happy with the firefly? The Chakor receives joy seeing the moon. Why would they be happy seeing the stars? The Pothi that was written before about Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, Guru Angad Dev ji had that written. It was spoken by Bhai Bala ji. When Guru Angad Dev ji went to Vaikunt, Guru Amardas ji became the Guru. He gave Mukti to many Sikhs. He destroyed hypocrisy and sinful paths. After Guru Amardas ji, Guru Ramdas ji was illuminated. In his presence, a Sikh named Bhai Hindhaal ji did his Seva. Guru ji was happy with his Seva. He did Seva of the Langar with faith. His mind was always in his control. He didn’t let his mind wander. He was in joy doing Seva. He was a great Sikh. He always obeyed Guru ji. Where he used to do Seva, Guru ji came there, one day. The Prabhoo, Guru Ramdas ji, was the sun of the Sodhis. Bhai Hindhaal ji saw Guru Ramdas ji and stood up, quickly. He was drenched with love. He was kneading dough at that time. He had dough on his hands. He had stopped and got up. He put both his hands behind his back and bowed his head to Guru ji. He didn’t put his hands on the floor to avoid dirt getting on his hands. He wanted to keep the purity of the Langar. He did the Darshan of Guru ji with devotion. Guru Ramdas ji blessed him. He kept his dirty hands behind. Guru ji blessed him. Bhai Hindhaal ji’s children began to bow with their hands behind their backs, paying tribute to their father. I have seen their descendants. They still bow in this way. Guru ji was happy with their Seva. Among the children of Bhai Hindhaal ji was born a Saakat sinner (some historians name him Bhuddi Chand). The history written of Guru Nanak Dev ji, he changed it. The history that Guru Angad Dev ji had commissioned, there weren’t many copies of it. There was only one copy. Bhai Hindhaal ji’s son met a follower of Bhagat Kabir ji and read the Janamsakhi. They got together and did a very bad thing. They changed the Pothi by praising their own ancestors. They wrote a lot of nonsense. Hearing those words were sinful. They made Bhai Hindhaal ji look bigger and praised him. They praised him more than Guru Nanak Dev ji. They wrote his praises. They wrote many examples and made efforts to corrupt the Janamsakhi. Many were deceived by hearing their literature. The ones that didn’t know the history of Guru Nanak Dev ji, they were deceived. The slanderer wrote praises of his ancestor. They thought to themselves: “the Sikhs will grow and spread in the future. When they read this, they will do our Seva. They will follow us. Many will follow us.” They thought of this and wrote the praises of Bhagat Kabir ji and Bhai Hindhaal ji. The original Pothi of Guru Nanak Dev ji’s history was thrown into the Beas. The pages were ripped and scattered into the Beas River. What Guru Angad Dev ji had commissioned, these two took the words and mixed them with their own. They wrote an unorthodox version.
Listen oh listeners, the Pothi that was altered, that was copied. The complete Sikhs of the Satguru, who do not have bad wisdom, they knew the true glory of Satguru Nanak Dev ji. They knew that Guru ji was the Parmeshwar. They didn’t believe the altered Janamsakhi. The ones who wished for the Darshan of Guru Nanak Dev ji, they knew the truth. The ones that followed the altered Janamsakhi, they were far from the path of Sikhi. The ones that had faith in the Guru’s feet, they said the true Saakhis of Guru Nanak Dev ji. They drank the Saakhis like milk. They received bliss in this world and in the next world. They were not satiated hearing it. The glory of Guru Nanak Dev ji is like Kheer, milk. It gives bliss to the Gursikhs. The Chands, Chaupais and divisions; they are like sugar in the milk. It made the Katha delicious. The altered Saakhis were like flies in the milk. The wise ones can take the flies out and put sugar in the milk to drink it. The ones who see the flies and still consumes it, their bodies will be tired and won’t be able to digest the milk. The altered Saakhis will not let faith come into their hearts. The ones who consume the pure Saakhis, they take the altered Saakhis out. The Gurmukh Sikhs are like the lotus. The glories of the Guru are like the sun. I spoke to such Sikhs. The ones that knew the true Saakhis, I consulted with them. The ones who fell off the path are like owls. They are Saakats who are greedy. I do not sit with them, nor do I speak with them. The followers of Maya, the Saakat, will never understand. They do not listen nor follow you. If Brahma would speak to them himself, their corruption would not leave their minds. If the bitter Tumbi is mixed with the juice of the sugarcane, made into sugar crystals, hung on the walls of sugar, the tumbi will still never be sweet. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is great in every way. He is the highest. How can I praise him? His one piece of hair has many universes in it. The Parmeshwar came in human form as Guru Nanak Dev ji. The Sidhs, Naths and Jattis; became immortals and no longer feared the death. Other Acharyas of other religions, people with other ideologies, Peers of Peers, Auliyas and others; how many can one count? Their prides were thick like the evening darkness. Hypocrisy was spread out like the stars. The powerful and strong, they twinkled like the stars in the night. The Kaliyuga started a bad way. The night was dark. The hypocrites and thieves roamed freely. The ideologies were like Chakors. The people met them with joy. The sinners were praised. They ruled in the pond of Kaliyuga. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji was the sun that came out. The others that were mentioned before, were all destroyed. The saints blossomed like the lotus flowers. They were relieved. The Sikhs, like Chakvas, their pains were gone. The Bhagti spread everywhere like sunshine. The Gyaan was the sunlight. The slanderers of such a great Guru, were in pain like the owls. For 1,000 years of the Devatas (around 3.1 Trillion years), these slanderers will spend in Hell and experience pain. They will then be born as insects and fungi for many lives. They will be in pain.
The glory of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is great. I cannot fully say it. Just as an ant that wishes to pick up a mountain with many efforts, fails, that is how I am. I don’t see anyone equal to Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. I can’t even give you an example. If someone does make that mistake of comparing him, they will be laughed at. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, who is our Master, only he is such an omniscient being who knows everything. If someone praises him or slanders him, it does not affect him. He was the Guru from birth. He was the Parmeshwar. Just as the Vedas were written in Shruti Richa (lines), Guru ji wrote Shabads for the good of the weak-knowledged people of Kaliyuga. He made the knowledge easier for them to understand. The slanderers who slander Guru ji, Guru ji’s glory is unaffected. It’s like someone trying to cover the moon with leaves. It cannot be hidden. Many owls slander the sun and close their eyes when it comes up. The sun makes them blind. The Martand (sun) does not lessen in any way. Its light gives bliss to all. Guru Nanak Dev ji’s glory illuminates like the sun. The slanderers are destroyed by his glory. The 4 castes and 4 Ashrams sing the glories of Sri Guru ji. The Turks call him their Peer. They see Guru ji full of virtues. He is known by the greatest of Peers. The miraculous Sidh Naths, wherever they are, they understand the infinite power of Guru ji. The Sidhs take power from Guru ji. Wherever the land spreads to, in every place, Guru ji’s glory has spread. The opposers, Guru ji destroyed their egos. His glory was victorious over all.
Guru ji’s glory is like the Kevada flowers of Khurasan and Kabul; like the Maalti of Multan; like the Kalapbrish of Mecca; like the Mayank of Medina; like the sounds of the conches of Kashmir; like the mercury of Baghdad; white like Narad; like the moonlight reflecting from the shores of the pure Ganga; like the Chaur is above the heads; like the swans spread in the 7 Deeps; like the Lotus in Kanshi; like the Amrit in Amritsar; like the milk in Delhi; like the Chandi of Jodhpur; like Shaishnaag on the Sumer Mountain; like the sandalwood seen in China; like the diamonds in Nepal; like the Kapah in Kamroop; like the snow in Hisar; like the tusks of the elephants of the 8 Dijpals; like Sarasvati in Lucknow; like clouds in Lahore, like the she-elephants of Hajipur; like the silver of Rome; like the hail of Iraq; like the stars of Iran; like the crystals of Farookabad; like the waves of the Kheer Saagar; like martbhaans on the shores of the Jumana; like the Koka of Kalinjer; like the white teeth of all; the glory is spread everywhere. Kavi Santokh Singh ji sings it.
In all ten directions; Hindus and Muslims; in every house of every land; the garden of flowers; the glory spreads like the Maalti and Juhi flowers.
The ones who say that Guru Nanak Dev ji was born like other people, they speak rubbish. That is false. They do not know Guru Nanak Dev ji. The slanderers slander him. They are in pain in their life and go to Hell when they die. They do not know of his greatness but when they hear this Katha, they will understand. The listeners heard this but fell in doubt again. The ones who wished to hear the Katha of Guru ji, they doubted and said: “listen Kavi ji, Guru Granth Sahib ji says that Guru ji is the Avatar of Raja Janak. These words that give peace are written. People give this example when saying Guru ji’s Saakhi. Please erase our doubt. Guru Granth Sahib ji’s words are priceless and indestructible. They give joy and are prosperous.” I was happy to hear this and said: “you are great. Your wisdom and words are great. What you have thought of is valid. You understand this. The great beings only talk about great beings. The small and unwise people can’t say these things. They can’t give proper arguments or examples. The history of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is pure. I have stated it according to Guru Granth Sahib ji’s traditions. What Bhai Gurdas ji has written; he has praised Guru ji as well. He stayed in the presence of Guru Arjan Dev ji. He had Sikhi, Love and Nem in his heart. Hearing his Bani, Guru Arjan Dev ji blessed it by saying: “the Sikh that reads this with love, will receive Sikhi.” I have said this Katha according to Bhai Gurdas ji. Listen to this Saakhi. Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji, in his presence was Bhai Mani Singh ji. He was determined in his life towards Sikhi. He was determined to the end. I have stated the Katha according to his Janamsakhi of Guru ji. Listen to the Saakhi of Guru Nanak Dev ji as according to Guru Granth Sahib ji. Keep faith in your heart and listen:

In this way, Sri Guru Granth Sahib ji has stated this about Guru Nanak Dev ji. Many Svaiyas have been written about him. The Nirankaar was Guru ji, the giver of bliss and Mukti. Over and over again this is written about Guru Nanak Dev ji. Do you see this as true or false? The ones who believe Guru Granth Sahib ji as true, they recognized Guru Nanak Dev ji as the Avatar of Hari. The writer that stayed with Guru Arjan Dev ji, I will state his writings of Guru Nanak Dev ji. His name was Bhai Gurdas ji.
Bhai Gurdas Vaach..
The Nirankaar Nanak Dev ji came into the form..

(Vaar 24 Ank 25)
There are many other lines in many writings about Guru Nanak Dev ji. Oh wise ones, read them and think about it. Now, about the Avatar of Raja Janak, it is written in Guru Granth Sahib ji as this: it is the praise of Raja Janak as he was connected to the Parmeshwar and also experienced the fortunes of a king. He was a Ghristi but detached from the world. Guru Nanak Dev ji did the same thing. He was detached from the world. The translations are unlocked in other Shabads, in a great way. One should stay in the world, as a lotus lives in the water but remains un-drenched. Think about this. This is what that Shabad is referring to. Raja Janak was a benevolent king. He is referred to as the Avatar of Inder. In this same way, understand the praise of Janak, as he was detached from his riches just as Guru Nanak Dev ji was.” The listeners were happy hearing this. Their doubts were gone. This Adhyaya is complete. The one who reads it or listens to it, they will get peace and joy.
1-38 Meeting Bhai Laalo
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach
One should meditate on Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji all the time. One does not become bound to the attachments of the world then. The form of joy, the ocean, Guru ji defeated the hypocrites. He was the supreme. He destroyed the poverty and laziness. I bow to his radiant feet. He is the giver of Mukti and the cloud of Gyaan. Whoever comes to his shelter, their sins are washed away. The reason why he came into the world as an Avatar, he now wished to carry out his mission. He wanted to save the unwise who were going to go to Hell. Many had gone to Hell. He didn’t want the others to go to Hell. Guru ji created the great bridge of greatness for them to cross. Whoever crossed the bridge were saved. The Sikhs that worship Guru ji’s feet; meditate on his beautiful form; their doubts were all gone and they were no longer afraid of the Jumms.
Guru ji left Sultanpur with Baba Mardana ji. As he was leaving, the Lotus bodied, Supreme wisdom, spoke: “in which way do you wish to travel, Mardana? Tell me and we will head in that direction.” He was going to save his servants. He had relieved the pains of his servants. Bhai Mardana ji said: “wherever you wish, we can go there, oh Pure One. You lead and I will follow you, oh Sri Prabhoo; Ocean of virtues.” Guru ji said: “Ahmnabad is a place where a Tarkhan named Laalo lives. Let’s go meet him first.” In this way, the Kamal-badan spoke and slowly walked towards Ahmnabad. His lotus feet walked on the path. The servants who ingrained his feet in their hearts, their pain was all gone.
After 17 days, they reached Ahmnabad. The Destroyer of Pain went to the home of Laalo. He went to give him bliss. Bhai Laalo ji saw Guru ji and stood up with his hands folded. He bowed to Guru ji seeing him as a Sadhoo. As soon as he saw Guru ji, his heart was filled with peace and bliss. Guru ji said: “may the Kartar come into your heart. Continue doing your work.” Bhai Laalo ji said: “oh saint, where did you come from? Tell me. Your form is beautiful and unique. Your words are sweet that give Mukti. To hear you and see you, my heart is filled with love. I am in peace looking at you.” Guru ji said: “I am a traveler from a foreign land. My home is far away. This form is of a Dervish. I am from a foreign place.” Bhai Laalo ji said: “your Darshan and touching your feet washes the sins. You are radiant. The birth and death cycle are destroyed seeing you. Sinners like us, you are the deliverer. The peace I feel in my heart is from your sweet words. You give peace and Mukti. You are a complete Sadhoo. Please tell me your name. My mind is smitten by your feet. Oh Compassionate One, please have mercy on me.” Sri Guru ji spoke form his mouth: “you will know who I am. Sit down now and do your work. Do the Simran of Hari Hari.” Bhai Laalo ji said: “I have heard of a Tappa named Sri Nanak ji from Talwandi. I think that is you. I don’t think there is no one equal to you. I’ve searched in all 10 directions. I feel you are him. I wish to hear it from your mouth. I won’t believe it otherwise.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “you are right! That is him. Keep faith in your heart.” Bhai Laalo ji heard this and said to Bhai Mardana ji: “what is your caste and name? Tell me about you, who told me about Guru Nanak ji. From where are you from?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “my name is Mardana. I travel with Guru Nanak Dev ji. I am the Miraashi of the Bedi clan. Nanak ji is my master.” Bhai Laalo ji bowed his head to Guru ji. He put his head onto Guru ji’s lotus feet. He had faith now. He knew he was the Parmeshwar. He respected Guru ji and laid out a bed. Guru ji sat down. The Master of the world, the ocean of joy, blessed his servant. Bhai Laalo ji obeyed and went off to prepare food. He went to his home. Bhai Mardana ji said to Guru ji: “speak to me. Who is he oh Master? You blessed him. I see him as fortunate. His Bhuddi is engrossed in Bhagti.” Guru ji spoke: “he is a saint. He has done Bhagti from many births. It is complete now. There are 9 types of Bhagti. If one is to do any one of them, they can be crossed from the world and get the highest status. There is no doubt in this.” Bhai Mardana ji asked: “tell me all of the types of Bhagti. By which one achieves the highest status and crosses the world ocean filled with the water of fear.” Sri Guru ji said: “Listen to the different types of Bhagti. I will tell you all of them. I will tell you their characteristics and goal. The first is to do Seva in the Satsangat. Meet the Sangat and do Seva with devotion. The second type is to listen to the history of the Guru and Parmeshwar. Keep your mind focused on the Katha. 3- Make your mind the bee for the Guru’s feet. Think of the Guru’s form in your heart. 4- Sing the glories from your mouth of Parmeshwar. Singing the glories, you should get goosebumps. 5- Dam- control your Indriyas; Sam – control your mind; do selfless acts and remain detached. Don’t expect anything from your Seva. Don’t look for rewards. 6- Don’t find faults in others. See gain and loss as the same. 7- Remain without fraud and deceit. Don’t be clever. Don’t let sorrow or joy come into your heart when someone says something. 8- Have faith in Kartaar. Don’t waiver. 9- See everyone as Hari Parmeshwar. Everything is the Hari. These are the 9 Bhagtis I told you quickly. If you do even 1 type, you and your whole family will be blessed from this world. Your friends will also be saved. Maya cannot attract you if you do Bhagti. Such people are drenched in the colour of Hari.” Bhai Mardana ji heard this and bowed his head to Guru ji’s feet. He said: “Sat Bachan! You speak the truth. Your words destroy the pain of the world.”
Bhai Laalo ji had returned soon. He said: “Sri Guru ji, come to my home and eat food. You are the lion that kills the painful elephants. I am stuck in the snake-like bounds of the world. Your words are like the Garud, killing the snakes. Bless me by coming to my home and eating the food.” Guru ji heard this and said: “bring the food here.” Bhai Laalo ji said: “you are wearing a Janyow. How can you eat outside? You can come to my home and eat in the Chownka (the kitchen boundary specially prepared). You are born in a high caste. If you wish, I can bring the food here. Please destroy my doubts.” Sri Guru ji said: “all of this earth, it is a one big Chownka. Whoever is true, that is pure. These are all doubts of the mind. Saints have relieved these doubts.” Bhai Laalo ji laughed and ran home.
Bhai Laalo ji made Rotis of millet and oats (kodra) and Saag of mustard. When Bhai Mardana ji saw the food, he thought to himself: “these rotis are thick. How will I eat these?” Guru ji knew what Bhai Mardana ji was thinking. He said: “Mardana, why are you thinking so hard? When you eat this food, you will know how it tastes.” Guru ji took the roti and poured Saag on it. He gave it to Bhai Mardana ji. Bhai Mardana ji ate the food. It tasted like Amrit. The Highest being spoke: “how was it? Tell me.” Bhai Mardana ji smiled and said: “what shall I say? I have heard of Amrit but never experienced it. I have heard that it tastes great. That is how this food tastes. You are omniscient. You know everything. Whatever I think of, you already know.” Bhai Laalo ji spoke a request: “the greatness of great beings is that they only see love in a person. They don’t think of anything else. They don’t care of the food. The food of Vidhur, Sri Krishan ji ate that, leaving the delicious food of Duryodhana. He took the raw rice of the Brahmin, Sudhama and blessed him with prosperity. This was the greatness of the deliverer of the poor. He took the half-eaten Bers of the low caste Bheelani. He only saw the love and didn’t think of her faults or virtues.” Guru ji was happy and said: “I tasted Amrit in this food. That’s what I tasted. You made this food with your honest earnings.” Bhai Laalo ji bowed his head to the Giver of Mukti. When he touched the Parmeshwar’s feet, his sins were all washed away. His attachments were all broken. He said: “you blessed me today. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji, I was drowning in the well of pain. You saved me with your compassion. You are the complete and ancient form of Parmatma. You save your servants. You support them.” He then grabbed Guru ji’s feet. He bowed with the utmost humility. He didn’t lift his head. Sri Guru ji put his hand on Bhai Laalo ji’s head. As soon as he touched him, his Dasam Duaar opened and he could see the 3 Loks. Guru ji’s hand blessed him and gave him bliss. His bliss couldn’t be described. Bhai Laalo ji was One with Guru ji. He saw his Aatma. He could only see himself everywhere in the world.
Guru ji stayed for 3 days there. He stayed in his home and destroyed his pains. Bhai Laalo ji knew the greatness of Guru ji. He served his feet, day and night. His attention was focused in the Anaahad sound, continuously. The sounds of the Raags gave him bliss. His bounds were broken and the fear of the Jumms were gone. Guru ji wished to go somewhere else. Guru ji asked Bhai Mardana ji: “where do you wish to go now? I wish to spread the Bhagti of Parmeshwar. I have no other task.” Bhai Mardana ji said: “Prabhoo ji, you know what’s in every heart. You know my state and know my wish. You can go where you wish. I will follow. People slander you without knowing you here. These people are unwise and forget about Mukti. What is in every heart, you already know. These people slander you. I hate that.” Guru ji heard this and said: “we will take leave and go ahead. That place is good where the Satsangat is. These people are corrupt and in pain. I came to the home of the wise and honest person. We have to go to far off lands.” Guru ji said this in the form of the Dervish. Bhai Mardana ji said: “wherever I go in this city, people say: “he is the Doom of the Kurahia.” I get angry when I hear this. Let’s leave now.” Guru ji laughed and said: “we will leave in the morning, Mardana.”
In the morning, Guru ji said: “Laalo, may you remember the Kartaar. I am going to another land now. I wish to go see other lands.” When Bhai Laalo ji heard this, he said: “what did I do that was wrong? You are leaving quickly. Why don’t you stay? See me as your servant, oh Giver of Joy. Why are you upset?” Guru ji said: “you are without any faults. The people of your city are foolish. They see me and are in pain. I wish to go where the Satsangat is. There is bliss there, day and night.” Bhai Laalo ji said: “you are the saint. Parmeshwar is on your side. How are you in pain by the words of the foolish? You have no work with them. These people are caught in the worldly ways. Seeing and speaking to the saints makes one happy. You give joy. Stay here for some more days. You can do as you wish.” Guru ji heard this and said: “I speak the truth. There is no lie in this. The world is anxious. Many are in pain. They don’t know what lies ahead for them. If I sit and stand; speak or not; walk or not; they are not complete in any way; they always criticize. They don’t get along with the Bhagats. They never get along with them.
Sri Mukhvaak..
In this Kaliyuga, how can I save my honour from the 5 types? If I speak to them, they say I speak too much..
If I stay quiet, they say that I have no wisdom.. If I sit in one place, they say he sits and does Bhagti..
If I travel, they say look how he puts ash in our heads, does he not get food in his own place? If I stay humble, they say I am afraid..
They are not happy in any way. Where I can go and spend my time, they always say something. Here and there, says Nanak, only the Karta keeps the honour..8..
(Bhai Banno Saroop/ Bhai Bala Janamsakhi)
Laalo, as the Kartaar keeps you, that’s how you should stay. Only the Kartaar can keep your honour. The world is a deep hole. Whoever falls into it, can’t do anything.” Bhai Mardana ji became upset seeing the unwise people of Ahmnabad. Bhai Laalo ji bowed many times with humility. He said: “stay another month with me. Oh Master, see my state. You can go where you want to then.” Sir Guru ji, the Omniscient One, saw his servant’s humility and decided to stay. He said: “I can’t refuse your wish. I will stay a month. Mardana, stay a month and then we will go as you say. How can I refuse this Bhagat? How can we leave now?” The Compassionate One stay in Ahmnabad.
After 2 days, by whose blessings one is taken out of the birth and death cycle; by doing the Simran of his name, the fear of Jumms goes away; sat on his seat. Bhai Laalo ji massaged his feet. The Munis meditate on this form. The ones who have his form in their heart, they do not fear death. Bhai Mardana ji sat down and said: “I can see that you are going to stay here for many days. Give me permission to go to Talwandi. I will give them your message. I will come back. I won’t delay. I will get news of my family. I will tell them: “I am going with Guru Nanak Dev ji. Don’t worry about me.” Guru ji said: “your heart is still with your home. Go home quickly and come back soon. Whatever you see about me, you can give my news to my family. Don’t say anything else.” Bhai Mardana ji took leave and went to Talwandi.
What happened after that, how he stayed in Ahmnabad, I will tell you. Guru ji would go to the jungle (where Rori Sahib is now) and do Tapasya. His form was of the Lotus. He destroyed the pain. He would come to Bhai Laalo ji’s home in the evening. Bhai Laalo ji would make food with love. He would request Guru ji to eat the food. The lover of the Bhagats would see the Bhagti and eat the food from Bhai Laalo ji’s home. He was always under the spell of his servants. He didn’t see high or low castes; virtues or cleverness; he only saw the love and Bhagti. He left the Brahmins and Kshatriyas to sit with the Shudra Tarkhaan. He ate his food with delight. He saw his love. Bhai Laalo ji served his feet. He fanned him in the heat. His heart had bliss. He worked during the day. His night was spent in Guru ji’s Seva with love. Guru ji would give the practice of Aatam Abhyaas to Bhai Laalo ji. He gave him the wisdom: “you are the Sat, Chetna and Anand form; which is away from attachment and hatred. It is away from birth and death. It is without creation. It is the One form of creation. Maya is nothing without this form.” Bhai Laalo ji heard this and his Agyaan was gone. His desires were gone. He became the knower of the Brahm, the Tat Veta. In this way, Guru ji spent some days. The Flag of the Bedis spent time.
Listen oh listeners, whoever listens to this Katha, they will get Sikhi. The status of Sikhi is great. Only few know of its greatness. The Jumms do not take the Sikhs of the Satguru. Just as the moon does not shine in the day, the Jumms do not take them. The love of the feet of Guru ji is radiant like the sun. there is no darkness there, nor the moon. The ones who keep devotion, their doubts do not remain. The cardinal sins don’t illuminate where the Guru’s feet are. The night of Bemukhta is destroyed. The Kavi says: “I fold my hands and bow to the feet of the Guru. The Sikhi that gives bliss, I ask for that. I have no other hopes. Give me your Darshan.”
1-39 Malik Bhaago/ The Khan
The lotus feet of Sri Guru ji, its dust is like a chain around the elephant-like mind, which is controlled. I make my mind still and begin the Katha which gives Mukti.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
In Ahmnabad, Guru ji stayed with Bhai Laalo ji. He stayed with him because of love. For 15 days, Bhai Laalo ji served Guru ji’s feet. The king was a Pathaan of Ahmnabad. The people of his court were all corrupt. His Minister was a Kshatriya named Malik Bhaago. He was not wise at all. He was really rich who had collected money by committing many sins. To have himself praised among the people, he held a Brahm Bhoj (a Langar for all 4 castes). Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras, all were invited. The many places of Fakirs and saints, he sent his men to invite them as well. He had a servant Brahmin go around giving invitations. He reached where the flag of the Bedis was. He saw Guru ji and said: “oh Nanak Tappa, where are you going? You have been invited for a Brahm Bhoj.” Guru ji responded: “oh Brahmin, what invitation? Think about it and tell me.” The Brahmin said: “The Kshatriya Malik Bhaago has invited all 4 castes. He has called for a Brahm Bhoj. Many will go to his home.” Guru ji said: “whom do I belong to? I am a Dervish who does not belong to any caste.” The Brahmin heard this and laughed. He said: “this is why you are called the Kurahia. The words you say, you always say the opposite. You left the traditions of the world. That’s why you are called Kurahia. Whoever doesn’t come to the Brahm Bhoj, Malik Bhaago will get angry. He will kick you out of the city. I have told you. Now it’s up to you on what you wish to do.” The Brahmin left after giving the invitation.
The Home of Forgiveness remained quiet. Malik Bhaago had a lot of food made. High and low castes were all called. Many people came to eat the food. A lot of foods were made. They were all satiated and praised Malik Bhaago. They saw him as a gracious person. The corrupt people didn’t know how big of a sinner Malik Bhaago was. He collected money by sin. He had a great Bhoj.
Guru Nanak Dev ji didn’t go to Malik Bhaago’s. He spent his whole day in the jungle. In the evening, Guru ji came to Bhai Laalo ji’s home. The Brahmin noticed that the “Tappa” had not come to the Bhoj. He told Malik Bhaago about this. He tattletaled on Guru ji to Malik Bhaago. He was already jealous so he didn’t waste any time telling Malik Bhaago: “look Malik ji, the Kshatriya Nanak Tappa did not come. He thinks he is greater than you. He didn’t come to your home to eat your food for this reason. He doesn’t come under anyone’s eye. He has left the traditions and follows the wrong path. He walks the wrong path and eats food at a Shudra’s home. He is not afraid of you and didn’t come here.” Malik Bhaago asked: “did you invite him this morning or not?” The Brahim said: “I did invite him. I told him many times.” Malik Bhaago heard this and got angry. It was like an insect getting angry on top of a lion. He said: “go Brahmin and call him. I will see his manliness. I want to see his strength. It’s amazing that he is not afraid.” The Brahmin got happy and went to Guru ji.
Where Bhai Laalo ji’s home was, the Brahmin came to the door and shouted out loud: “Laalo, is Nanak Tappa here?” Bhai Laalo ji said: “yes! He is sitting inside. What task do you have with him? Tell me.” The Brahmin said: “send him outside.” Sri Guru ji got up and came outside. Guru ji said: “what are you saying? Tell me your reason for coming.” The Brahmin said: “Come! Malik Bhaago is calling you. If you don’t come, he will send his men to get you.” The home of joy said: “what work does Malik Bhaago have with me? I don’t know any Malki Bhaago nor do I know where he lives. I have never heard of him. I have nothing to give or take with him. Why did he send you? Why is he commanding me?” The Brahmin came back, who didn’t know the greatness of Guru ji. He said to Malik Bhaago: “listen Malik ji, he didn’t obey your command. He doesn’t see you as anything. He disobeyed you. He says: “I don’t know Malik Bhaago or where he lives.” He is stubborn. He spoke harsh words about you. He didn’t come after you called him. You can do as you wish. He slanders your Bhoj. He eats at the bad Shudra’s home. He is a Kshatriya and has no shame in breaking the traditions.” Malik Bhaago got angry. The Brahmin’s words were like Ahooti in the fire. He became red with anger. He said: “if he doesn’t come this time, I will send many men to get him.” He said to his men: “get ready and go with the Brahmin.” The Brahmin took 5 men with anger.
The Brahmin came to Guru ji and shouted: “oh Nanak Tappa! Malik ji is very angry with you. Come with me. Make up your mind to go. Otherwise the men with me will take you by force. They won’t waste time.” Sri Prabhoo ji heard the harsh words and laughed. He then went to where Malik Bhaago was sitting. To defeat the foolish Malik and destroy his ego, to make him embarrassed, Sri Guru ji went to Malki Bhaago’s home. Bhai Laalo ji followed with fear and doubt. The men went behind. They were really happy. They didn’t know it was Parmeshwar coming with them.
In the city it was now known that Sri Guru ji had been called to Malik Bhaago. People came running to walk with Guru ji. They all reached Malik Bhaago’s home. The Brahmin said: “Nanak has come to you.” Malik Bhaago said: “good he has come. Bring him here.” Sri Guru ji said: “why did you call me here? You sent your men, over and over again. What work do you have with me? You commanded me without fear.” Malik Bhaago said: “why didn’t you come to the Brahm Bhoj? The Brahmin invited you. You didn’t come to eat the food. What fault did you see in my Brahm Bhoj that you didn’t want to come?” Guru ji said: “I am a Fakir. I have no claim on anything. I spend where I can. I don’t promise anything. Wherever I get food, I eat. I have no wish to eat anything great. Whatever I get, I eat what is made with faith. I eat with joy.” Malik heard this and got angry. He said: “you go against tradition. You are not afraid. I heard that you are a Kshatriya. You ate at the home of a Shudra. You call yourself a Tappa. I am angry looking at you. I called this a Brahm Bhoj and you find faults in it. You ate at the home of a low caste person. I invited you but you didn’t come. You didn’t consider my invitation. The Brahmins and Kshatriyas and other castes ate at my home. Look everyone, he didn’t like my food.” Sri Guru ji said: “bring your food now from the Brahm Bhoj. Bring what you prepared. I don’t want any desire to remain in your heart.” Guru ji said to Bhai Laalo ji: “go to your home and bring any food that remains.” Bhai Laalo ji went to his home and saw a piece of a Kodra (millet) Oat Roti.
Malik Bhaago brought his ghee drenched food. Whatever was prepared, it was brought out. Mal Pooras, Pooris, Karah and other foods were brought out, quickly. The food was placed in front of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. Malik Bhaago spoke with pride: “eat with joy!” Guru ji looked towards Bhai Laalo ji who was arriving with a piece of his Kodra Roti. Guru ji took the Kodra Roti from Bhai Laalo ji’s home in his hand. Guru ji held the Pooras of Malik Bhaago’s Brahm Bhoj in his left hand and the Kodra Roti of Bhai Laalo ji in his right hand. Guru ji then squeezed both of his hands. A lot of people were watching. A liquid trail came out of the two hands. The place was filled with many people. From one hand came a trail of milk and from the other hand, there was blood leaking. It was like Ganga and Sarasvati flowing. The Ganga is known to be white and the Sarasvati is known to be red. On one side, the milk fell to the ground and on the other side, blood fell to the ground. As Guru ji squeezed his hands more, more milk and blood flowed from his hands. Everyone was amazed and surprised to see this. They said: “we have never seen anything like this. He took out blood and milk from the food.” The crowd gathered. The people were surprised to see what was happening. They couldn’t understand what was happening. They just watched.
Sri Guru ji was the root of Dharma. He spoke great words, which were blissful: “Malik, you have taken the blood of many. You did the Brahm Bhoj from the blood of the poor. You made the poor work hard for your profits. Eating your sinful food, the virtues and good deeds run away. You earned money by sinful ways. Listen to my words. These unwise people don’t know this. These people ate your food who don’t understand this. Eating this food, the Tapasya of Tapasvis is destroyed. The focus of the meditator will not stay eating this food. This food makes the mind dirty. The new colour of the praises of Hari will not be absorbed. Prema Bhagti will not be felt by eating this food. The pure-minded ones who know this, why would they drink this blood? Why would they want to lose their good deeds? You should understand this. Look at the food from the Shudra’s home. Pure milk comes out of his food. There is a Brahm Bhoj at his home every day. I eat at his food every day. He works honestly all day. He doesn’t think of making money with sins. He works hard with his hands and earns the money. He eats from those earnings. He gives to the poor first and then he eats. Eating his food makes the mind pure and washes away the filth from many lives. You, Malik Bhaago, collect the earnings by committing sins and then want people to praise you so you give them rich food. You hide your sins in your mind. You don’t show or tell anyone how you earned the food. You planted a Kikar seed (Gum Arabic) which grows thorns and pricks the travelers. This so-called “good deed” that you are doing by feeding everyone is for the purpose of feeding your ego by their praises. The seed that is not planted does not grow fruit. Only the one that is hidden in the earth grows to give fruit. This tradition is known by all. You are opposite to both these things. You will know this when the Jumms scare you. You earned money with sins and then fed your ego.” Seeing the great fire-like radiance of Satguru ji, Malik Bhaago’s mind was like firewood. He got burnt by Guru ji’s word. The fool didn’t understand anything. Guru ji’s words were like ghee, touching the fire and making the fire fiercer. Malik Bhaago got angrier. He couldn’t do anything though. He was embarrassed. He lowered his head. He didn’t know what to say. He got anxious like a cheap person losing his money. It was like a person losing money in gambling; like a thief going into a home and getting caught; like a cheater getting caught. The people of all castes, high and low, stood there and listened. They were amazed. Sri Guru ji got up and came outside. He was like the sun of Gyaan. Bhai Laalo ji was with him. He was really happy. His body showed his joy. Guru ji’s teeth were like white crystal flowers. The Home of Compassion, Guru ji, his face was like the moon.
Guru ji came back to Bhai Laalo ji’s home after exposing Malik Bhaago. His compassion makes the pain of the Jumms go away. In the city of Ahmnabad, the news spread. People talked about the miracle of leaking milk and blood from the food: “Malik Bhaago is embarrassed. He couldn’t say anything to Guru ji as he spoke.” The wise people understood the glory of Guru ji in their hearts. They started to bow to Guru ji wherever they saw him from that day onwards. His Darshan destroyed all the 3 illnesses. The people saw him as a powerful person. They said: “don’t slander him. That will give you pain. He is a saint. His ways are different. His power is undefeatable. No one can defeat him.” The foolish unwise people didn’t see his greatness after seeing the miracle. It was like a monkey holding the Chintamani and not knowing its value; biting it and throwing it away. They said: “he blocked our vision. We couldn’t understand what he did.”
Malik, the foolish unwise one, he was filthy with sins. He couldn’t know the greatness of Guru ji after seeing the miracle. He was jealous. The unwise one thought to himself: “I will take revenge. Then I will be in peace. Look how he embarrassed me. I will go to the Khan and have him arrested.” The fool didn’t know that doing such a thing would make his pain grow even more. He was going to go to Hell for this. He went to the Khan king’s home in the morning. He went to the Khan’s court. The Khan’s son was sick, on his deathbed. Everyone tried their best to save the prince but the illness would not go away. Malik was asked by the Khan: “my son is still sick. No effort or medicine worked. What should I do? I tried many medicines. I went to the Gauns and Fakirs with powers. Nothing worked. I tried everything that everyone told me to do. I did it all.” Malik Bhaago thought to himself: “what I wanted, that is what has happened.” The sinner spoke words which would give him Hell: “go to a big Fakir. That person can cure your son. Only that complete Fakir can cure your son. It’s like weak arms can’t catch an enemy. Find a complete Fakir.” The Khan heard this and said: “I can’t see anyone who is complete. I haven’t seen such a Fakir.” Malik Bhaago said: “there is one named “Nanak.” He is a complete Fakir.” Many hear things but don’t see advantage or disadvantage. People don’t know good from bad. They don’t know if a Fakir should be arrested or respected. They don’t know if one should do their Seva or capture them? How would a saint be happy being arrested? The Khan heard the words and sent his guards.
The guards of the Khan came to Bhai Laalo ji’s home. Guru Nanak Dev ji was in the jungle, where Rori Sahib is. The lotus-eyed one met the guards in the jungle. The guards said: “come with us. The king has called for you. If you don’t come with us, we will take you by force.” The Lotus-bodied One went with the guards to the home of the Khan.
The Master of the Universe sat beside the Khan. The Khan did Guru ji’s Darshan and said: “oh Fakir, my son is sick. Make his pain go away. Cure him. Make us happy. Otherwise, I will arrest you. I won’t let you go nor will I feed you in jail.” Guru Nanak Dev ji heard this and said: “you are caught in the bonds of attachment and are deteriorating. The son you wish to cure, has already gone to the realm of Jumms. If you don’t believe me, go and send your men for his news. Don’t show your pride off to me, sitting her with your inflated ego.” The Khan was surprised. He sent someone to his home. He was in pain, hearing Guru ji’s words. As this was happening, a person came from the Khan’s home with news of his son’s death. The king heard this and was upset. The Master of the Universe got up and came outside of the court. He went back to the jungle. The egotistical Khan, his ego was destroyed. Guru ji spent time in this way. He destroyed the jungle of pain of his servants with his fire-like arrow. Guru ji stayed with Bhai Laalo ji in the night. During the day, he would go to the jungle to do Tapasya.
1-40 Guru ji goes to Talwandi
The dust from the feet of Guru ji is like the pollen from the Lotus. It is the supreme. My mind is like a bee on top of this pollen. I say the Katha with love now.
Bhai Bala ji speaks:
Listen Guru Angad Dev ji, listen to the Katha which give the divine virtues. The ears are not satiated listening to this Amrit Katha. You are on the Ghaddi of Guru Nanak Dev ji and are the same as him. You are Guru Nanak Dev ji. You have all of the powers but keep them hidden. You are listening like you don’t know anything but in fact you are omniscient and know the past, present and future. You know what is hidden and evident. You are like an actor putting on a show. You are one light going through 10 roles. You never showed off that you are the Parmeshwar. You show yourself as a Bhagat doing the Bhagti of Parmeshwar. The actor never shows his previous roles, or talks about them. The role he plays, he acts the part. That is what you do. You know all your roles like the actor.
Sri Bala Sandhur Vaach..
In Ahmnabad, the news spread. The Katha has been stated of what happened there. Now, I will tell you what happened in Talwandi. Listen to the Katha oh Compassionate One. I meditate on Guru Nanak Dev ji and tell you. I first came to Talwandi. Somebody told Pitha Kalu ji about my arrival. Pitha ji ran to my home and asked how I was. I told him how Bebe Nanaki ji was and then told him Guru Nanak Dev ji’s state: “he stayed in the Vein River for 3 days. He then came out and quit his work as the Modi. He gave all his stock away along with the money. He had people loot his shop. The Navaab balanced the books in fear. When the accounting was done, Guru ji was in a profit of 760 Rajitpuns. Half of it, Baba Moola ji took by going to the Navaab. Sri Chand ji stayed in Sultanpur. Baba Mool Chand ji took Mata Sulakhani ji and Baba Lakhmi Das to his home.”
I then told him the Katha of the Maseed. I told Pitha Kalu ji: “Sri Nanak ji is the Avatar of Hari, born in your family. Your family is blessed and illuminated. Sri Nanak ji stays in the jungles of Sultanpur. He sometimes comes to his sister’s home.” Pitha Kalu ji heard this and got angry. He fought with me. He said: “Nanak earned a lot of money. Bala, you didn’t say anything to him. He lost all is wealth. His work as the Modi was good. He made a lot of money when he balanced the books. Bala, you had him lose the money. You joined him and gave the money to Fakirs. You left him with the Fakirs. You tell me my family is blessed? You came to your home in joy but left him there with Fakirs. You both lost all of the money. I told you to gather the money. You didn’t save anything. Everything was given away. You were both the same. You ate and spend openly. You had no shortage of money. You didn’t want to save it.” I then said to Pitha Kalu ji: “you can ask your daughter and son-in-law. You are fighting with me without knowing anything. Ask your daughter what the whole story is. Then you can accuse me. For many years I lost my own earnings of my fields by staying with Guru Nanak Dev ji. Everyone knows this. I left my own work. I stayed with your son for many years. I have no greed for money. I wish to have my life blessed. I want to stay with him. Why do you fight with me? Ask your daughter everything.” Baba Kalu ji then left my home.
After some time, Bhai Mardana ji came to Talwandi. He met his family with joy. Baba Kalu ji called Bhai Mardana ji to him. He asked him: “tell me where Nanak ji is. Tell me how he is. Has he gone crazy or is he well?” Bhai Mardana ji said: “listen Sire, I will tell you about him. You should not think about anything. He has blessed the whole family. He is the supreme form of the Parmeshwar, unreachable by anyone. He took on a body and came to your home. The people of Kaliyuga are unwise. He will save them from the Jumms. Nobody knows his greatness. His ways are amazing. There is no Peer or king like him. He has kept his unlimited powers hidden. He is in Ahmnabad now. I was with him. He is staying with a servant. I took leave and came home. I will meet my family and go back to him.” Bhai Kalu ji heard this and got angry. He didn’t know the truth of his son. He said to Bhai Mardana ji: “what are you saying? You say foolish things you foolish Doom. You are telling me that my son is the Avatar who has ruined my home! I have figured out that he is of no use to me anymore! He has now become a Fakir.” Baba Kalyaan ji shed tears from his eyes as he said this. He was without hope, thinking about his son.
Pitha Kalu ji went to Rai Bhullaar ji and said: “Mardana brought the news of Nanak ji.” Rai Bhullaar was happy. He called Bhai Mardana ji to ask about Guru Nanak Dev ji. He asked him: “tell me about Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. What tasks did he do? What form has he taken on? Why did you leave him?” Baba Mardana ji said: “listen Rai ji, Guru Nanak Dev ji is the form of Khuddah. What praise can I do of him? There is no one equal to him. He is not like other people. The way people work, he doesn’t. He is the Peer of Peers. He is the Meer of Meers. He is unaffected by hunger, thirst or pain. He is all-powerful and can do what he wishes.” Rai Bhullaar ji said: “you are great! You said his glory, as it is. I am old now, Mardana. Listen to me: how can I meet Guru Nanak ji? His face is the mine of compassion. I am like the Chakor who wishes to see the moon. His Darshan is like the full moon. I am like the Chatrik looking for the Swanti Drop. I am the bee; he is the lotus. I am looking for the smell. Mardana, do my task and I will be indebted to you forever. I won’t forget your favour. I wish to have his Darshan. Do this favour for me. I wish to see him once. It is like a pauper getting the paras; like a sick person cured.” Baba Mardana ji said: “Rai ji, your task, why wouldn’t I help you? I received many joys from your grace. Guru Nanak Dev ji wish is not in my hand though. It’s up to him if he comes or not. If you wish to see him, call Bala form his home. Have him go with me. The two of us will go with joy and request Guru Nanak Dev ji on your behalf. We will tell him your request. When he hears your message, he will come for sure. He is in Ahmnabad right now. We will go quickly.” Rai Bhullaar ji got happy and accepted his request: “you speak the truth Mardana.” Listen Guru Angad Dev ji, oh Giver of Mukti: a person was sent to me. I was called to Rai Bhullar ji.
When I came to Rai Bhullar ji’s home, I was told: “do my task as Guru Nanak Dev ji loves you: go with Mardana and request Guru Nanak ji to come here. Bless me. If he doesn’t come, request him by holding his feet. Tell him: “come one time to see Rai Bhullaar.” I said to Rai Bhullaar ji: “I will go a hundred times by your command. I know that you love Guru Nanak ji a lot. He will surely come when we ask him. He is the lover of his Bhagats. This is his way. Thinking of him, the curtains of doubt are lifted. You think of him a lot. The friend of the weak, he is the Master of the universe.” Rai Bhullaar ji was happy. He said: “bring him here quickly. The Khuddah will bless you. This will be a favour for me.”
Both of us got ready to go to Ahmnabad. We didn’t delay. We came to Ahmnabad soon. Where the Destroyer of Sins was sitting, we bowed to his feet. He said to us: “may Kartar remain in your mind.” He respected us and said: “is the Rai well?” I heard this and said with patience: “you have made everyone well. The Rai has requested you to come. He bows with his both hands folded. He wishes to see you with humility. He is like the lotus without the sun. He is wilting without you. Complete his wish please. He has love for your lotus feet. Just as the seashell floats on the ocean; once it gets the Swanti drop, a pearl develops in the seashell and it goes to the bottom of the ocean; in this way you should fulfill your promise towards your Bhagats. Come and give him your Darshan once.” Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji said: “Pitha ji will fight with me if I go but it is important to meet the Rai.” The one who knows all thoughts, was thinking himself. He said: “what should I do? I need to see Rai Bhullaar ji.” I said to him: “Rai Bhullar ji has said: “if I had strength, I would have come with my head to the ground. I am old and weak now. I can’t see well anymore. He is not in front of my eyes. I wish for him to gift me with his Darshan. I want him to make my life a success. Just as a river is useless without water; as the dark night is useless without the moonlight; just as a wife is without support, without her husband; in the same way, my body is useless without you.” Guru ji said: “what Rai Bhullaar ji said, I have a burden on my head. Let’s go and remove this burden of love.” Guru ji said to Bhai Laalo ji: “there is another one like you in Talwandi. He loves me. He wishes to see me from his heart. He wants to see me. He sent these two as messengers with his message. He spoke with deep love. I need to go. It’s important. Give me leave so I may go to him quickly.” Bhai Laalo ji said: “it has not been a month yet. Why are you leaving the poor me? Did I make a mistake in your Seva? Why are you sad towards me? Maybe I didn’t do your Seva well. I am poor. I don’t have money, Gurudev ji. That’s why you are leaving early. I always wish for your Seva.” Guru Nanak Dev ji said: “I stayed in your home for 25 days. The 5 days more I need to stay; I will come back when the Kartar commands it.” After saying this, the Home of Virtues left from Bhai Laalo ji’s home. Bhai Laalo ji bowed to Guru ji’s feet.
The Cloud of Bliss slowly walked towards Talwandi. He was the Giver of Mukti to his servants. He spent 7 nights on the way. We soon came close to Talwandi. Guru ji sat outside the city, near the well of Chander Bhaan ji. (Baba Chander Bhaan ji was Bhai Bala ji’s father.) The Home of Joy sat near the well. Baba Mardana ji sat in front of Guru ji. I sat behind the home of Compassion. Satguru ji sat in the middle.
