Part 96 Sakhi of Shaheed Singhs – Testing Sikhi, Asking for 5 Heads

If someone asks: “how were the Shaheeds given the title while they were alive?  Was this title given by the Master himself (Guru Gobind Singh ji) or was it done after him?”  The answer, I will tell you how I heard it from my elders (Jathedaar Baba Shyam Singh ji Narla).  I will tell you with my wisdom.  One day, Satguru ji sat in the Damdama of Keshgarh on his bed.  One Sikh came to Guru ji, reciting a Shabad: the sons of the Sikhs have become atheists.  Because of Kaliyuga, the Sikhs have become Asikhs.”  Guru ji heard this and said: “the raw have gone.  The real ones have become immortal for eternity.  There are such Sikhs in my Sangat.  They don’t know about Satyuga.  It is Satyuga for them now.”  The Sikh said: “show me such Sikhs.  My sins will be washed away.  I wish to bathe in this Amrit.”  Satguru ji tested the Sikhs.  He showed the raw from the real.  He said: “I will test them.”  Sri Satguru ji called for a Khanda.  He called the Marwaris and had the Khanda sharpened.  He picked up the Khanda.  He gathered the Sangat and said to them: “is there a Sikh who will cut his head for me?”  The people heard this and got scared.  Many left the Satguru.  Some said: “Guru ji has gone too strict.”  They wanted to leave Sikhi.  Some went home after hearing this.  Some turned back when they heard this.  Some turned back on the way.  Some met and some didn’t meet.  Some ran away without looking back.  Some said: “he killed the Masands.  He has no compassion.”  Some Sangat of Majha remained.  Many from Amritsar were still there.  Some thought of Bhai Gurdas ji’s words: “Gur saang brataavay, Sikh Sidhak na haaray.” If the Sikh does a drama, the Sikh should not lose faith.  The ones that had faith in the Guru, they stayed.  They obeyed the command of the Guru.  Since the Sarovar was made in Majha, the Sikhs that would sin, they would bathe in the Sarovar and saw themselves as pure again.

The glory of this place is in the hearts of the Sikhs.  Their cowardness was gone because of the glory of the Amritsar Sarovar in their hearts.  They bathe and the filth of their minds is washed away.  Their minds are pure and their wisdom is good when they bathe.  When the Majhails heard of giving their heads, they came with eagerness.  They came to give their heads.  They had their heads cut.  Many other came to give their heads.  They wanted to die for the Guru.  The 5 Payaaray became Shaheeds as they had died, in context.  Many who gave their heads were Shaheeds as they were alive.

Satguru ji set up a huge tent and had it covered.  Five goats were kept hidden in the tent.  Nobody knew about this.  Satguru ji asked for heads.  The Majhail Sikhs passed this test.  They gave their heads, bathed, had their body parts cleansed with dhoop and stood with joy.  The Satguru called for 5 Sikhs.  The effort was made to test them.  Their eyes were covered and made to stand separately.  The goats were killed instead of the Sikhs.  The blood of the goats flowed out of the tent.  Seeing the blood, many ran away.  Satguru ji protected the Sikhs and save them.  Guru ji gave them the title of Shaheeds.

Part 97 The Sakhi of Mehar Singh Bhujhangi, Ghanghu Shahia and Kharak Singh

There was a Ghumyaar (potter) Singh from Delhi named Mehar Singh.  He was a good Singh.  He had 10 Singhs with him all the time.  He stayed in Sirhind during the campaigns of the Banda.  Bhai Mehar Singh ji and the Singhs were Bhujhangis.  They fought with Ghanghu Shahias and Ram Rai followers.  They played the Jori with the Rabab to do Keertan in many villages.  They sang Gurbani, 4 times a day, going from village to village.  They would do Ardaas and say the Fateh of the Guru.  They made the Sangat chant Vahiguru.  They kept a staff in their hands and wore Tulwars around their necks.  They would set up their Dheras in the homes of Sikhs.  They wore blue clothes and Kacheras of 1.25 yards.  They bathed with their hair at around 3 am everyday.  They recited Bani and did Ardaas everyday.  They were always alert and feared no one.  They stayed with the Singhs who followed the Dasam Guru.  They would set up their Dhera there.  Ram Rai followers, Ghanghu Shahis, killers of young girls, Minas and Masands; they did not go to their villages.  They fought with them.

One day such an event happened; where they came, the Ghanghu Shahias were in the same village.  The Ghanghu Shahia’s leader was Kharak Singh, who called himself the Guru.  He would show the Sangat his powers.  He was of the Bussi caste.  An ancestor of his received a Manjhi from Guru Amardas ji.  The ancestor had done Seva at the Baoli in Goindwal.  For this reason, they were blessed.  There were no Sodhis who could sit on Manjhis anymore.  The people said: “Sikhs are like widows.  Trap them.”  Without the Guru, they were like widows.  The others would convince them and attach them to their group.  They said: “we will give you Ridhis, Siddhis, milk and sons.”  They broke them off from the Khalsa and made them join their cults.  When the Khalsa found out about this, they got angry.  The Singhs would fight these cult leaders.  People didn’t trust anyone till they saw miracles or had their wishes fulfilled.  The Ghanghu Shahis and the Khalsa were in conflict with each other.  The Khalsa said: “the Khalsa had won.”  The Ghanghu Shahis would say: “we won.”  Their conflict grew for a while.  I have heard of a conflict that I will tell you.  I have heard this from people who saw it with their own eyes.  I will tell you what they say.  There was a true Sikh of the Tenth Guru.  He got married into the Ghanghu Shahis.  The Singh had no shortage of food or wealth.  He only had the wish of a son.  He always gave his Dasvand from his profit.  The Sikh and his Sikhni had a discussion: “let’s call the Sikhs to our home and give them the Dasvand.  We will give them food and have them do the Ardaas.  We will ask them for a son in the Ardaas.  Guru Gobind Singh ji had said that we can have 5 Sikhs do Ardaas for whatever we need.  Let’s ask for a good day and call them.  The Sikhs will come into our home in this way.  We will call our families and relatives as well.”

The time came and the in-laws were called as well.  On the way, the Ghanghu Shahi Guru, Kharak Singh met the in-laws.  The in-laws brought the Guru along with them as he was actually going somewhere else.  They wanted to convince their son-in-law to join them and leave the Khalsa.  Bhai Mehar Singh ji had arrived before them.  He had 10 other Singhs who had their weapons fastened.  When the food was ready, Kharak Singh came and started a fight.  Kharak Singh said: “take my Charan Pahul and then I will eat your food.  You must become my Sikh first.”  The in-laws tried to convince the Sikh.  The woman spoke in agreement with her parents.  The Sikh said: “I have already taken the Pahul of the Khanda.  How can I turn away from the Satguru?  I am trained by the Guru.”  The woman said: “my parents are here with their Guru.  We should bow to them.  Otherwise I will die here and haunt you as a ghost, living here.  Whatever has been prepared, this will remain.”  The woman was stubborn.  It became hard for the Sikh.  He was stuck like a snake holding a lizard.  If the snake leaves it, it will become blind; if it eats it, it dies with leprosy.  The father-in-law insisted: “take Charan Pahul and only then will we stay here.”  The Sikh was stuck.  Bhai Mehar Singh ji and the Singhs were reciting Bani.  The Sikh was worried.  The Khalsa got angry then, as the Sikh tried to do good but it turned against him.  They tied their kumerkassas and got ready to fight.  He said: “whoever survives, he can make the person his Sikh.  The one who dies, how will he give his Pahul?  This is our announcement.  We are coming.  Get ready to fight.”  The in-laws heard this and ran away.  Kharak Singh was going to leave.  Bhai Mehar Singh ji said: “don’t leave without fighting.”  The Singhs took out their swords and stood.  Kharak Singh had to come back.  The Singhs wanted to end the fight.  The in-laws got scared.  The people tried to stop the fight.  The Singhs said: “we won’t leave now.  We will see how he will sit on a Manjhi now.”  Other men came to calm the fight down.  They said: “you came to the Sikh’s home.  Don’t fight.  You can fight somewhere else.  Don’t fight here.”  The Sikh was called to resolve the conflict.  The men said to all: “whoever can give the couple a son, they will become their Sikhs.”  The Ghanghu Shahis accepted this.  They wanted to save their lives and stalled the time.  They said: “within the year, they will have a son by our Ardaas.  On this day we will give him our Charan Pahul then.”  The Singhs accepted this.  They wrote this down.  The Singhs then said: “listen to our words, oh beloved Sikh of the Guru: if you get a son within the year, we were going to kill the son by our words.  But because you are our Sikh and your wife is not; like gold and sand mixed together, we will do an Ardaas for you.”  Five Singhs got together and did the Ardaas, thinking of the feet of the Guru: “oh omniscient Satguru, give them a son within 7 months.”  The Singhs wrote this down as well.  The Singhs said: “we will come on this day and take the Dasvand.  Leave it here for now.  Whoever is alive still, they will come a year from now.”  The two written statements were kept by the Panchayat.  Everyone ate the prepared food.

When 7 months passed, the woman gave birth to a son.  The Sikh was really happy.  The Tamaks were played in celebration.  The Sikh was happy because of the birth of his son plus the Ardaas of the Khalsa won.  The Tenth Guru made the Khalsa win.  The Ardaas of the 5 Singhs was fulfilled.  The Ghanghu Shahis words were light.  This news spread.  The Khalsa was happy.  Bhai Mehar Singh ji Ghumyaar had a celebration the next year.

Part 98 The Origin of the Ghanghu Shahias

In the mountains of the Doaba area are two small mountains.  There was a village there named Ghago.  Ghanghu Shah was a Khatri that lived there.  He was poor and didn’t have enough to eat.  He would tie some salt or gurrh into a sack and circle the village.  He saw the Sangat of the Guru travelling by his village, going to see Guru ji.  He met the Sangat and asked them: “where are you going?”  They said: “we are going to the Sri Satguru ji.”  Ghanghu Shah asked: “how is the Satguru?  Does he give Mukti and Bhugti?  I don’t need Mukti.  If he can give me Bhugti, then I will go with you.”  The Sikhs said: “he gives both in abundance.  When you do his Darshan, you get both.  His Sikh becomes capable of giving to others, once the Sikh has faith on Guru Amardas ji’s feet.”  Ghanghu said: “I have no gift to give him.  How will I touch his feet with my head?  I don’t have any money to eat either.”  The Sikhs said: “don’t worry about food.  You will have enough to eat.”  Ghanghu Shah ji left with the Sangat and arrived in Goindwal.  The Sangat did the Darshan of the Guru and did his Parkarma.  They bowed and gave gifts.  They said their Ardaas and received the fulfillment of their wishes.  As the Sangat brought money, Ghanghu Shah ji was embarrassed.  He had gurrh with him which was loose.  He couldn’t give that.  His face went pale.  The Satguru was omniscient.  He looked at the Sikh who was in doubt.  Satguru ji said: “oh Sikh, come forth.  Bring your gift.  Don’t be in doubt.  I need the rice of Sudhama.  This is worth Lakhs of Krores to me.”  Ghanghu ji came to Satguru ji and presented his loose lump of gurrh.  He realised that the Guru was omniscient.  He said to Guru Amardas ji: “give me work so I may eat.”  Sri Satguru ji said: “work at the Baoli.  There is a rock at the bottom.  It hasn’t broken yet.  The Sikh Sangat is working.  You should work too.”

The time of the breaking of the rock came and Guru ji.  Akbar wanted to win over the Chittorgarh Fort.  Sri Guru ji had the rock broken and at the same time, Akbar won Chittorgarh.  This was Guru ji’s boon, that both were to happen at the same time.  Ghanghu ji was one of the ones that contributed in breaking the rock.  Guru ji had told him to do it.  Satguru ji said: “ask for a boon.”  Ghanghu ji said: “make me a Hundidhaar, a Shahukaar (banker).”  Satguru ji sent him to Delhi to start his business.  Ghanghu became a big banker, doing Hundis (cheque transfers).  He had big profits.  His wealth grew and so he became egotistical.

Sri Guru ji sent a Hundi for a poor Sikh’s daughter’s wedding but Ghanghu Shah did not accept it.  Right away, Ghanghu Shah began facing losses.  He became poor in a few days.  He then returned to Guru ji and began to do Seva again.  Satguru ji became compassionate and accepted him in the Seva.  Bibi Bhani ji’s wedding preparations began.  Guru ji sent Ghanghu to get ghee from the Pahari areas.  Ghanghu folded his hands and said to Satguru ji: “you are sending me to get ghee.  There are Devi Devatas with powers there.  There are magicians there.  How can I collect ghee there?  There are bad things in the Pahari areas.  The Paharis don’t trust anyone.  I am not related to them.  Give me some powers so I may get ghee from there.”  Satguru ji said to Ghanghu: “I will live on your tongue.  Your words will become true.  Whatever you say will become true.  You can keep or destroy anyone.”  Ghanghu was happy hearing this.  He went to the Pahari areas and won all of the people there.  He sat there on a bed, becoming the Guru.  He sent a lot of ghee towards Guru ji.  He didn’t attend the wedding of Bibi Bhani ji.  He was afraid of losing his powers if he met Guru ji again.

Satguru ji heard of this and got angry.  He said: “Ghanghu’s face will become black.”  Some Sikh told Ghanghu.  He looked in the mirror and saw his black face.  The Satguru’s words cannot be reversed.  Ghanghu regretted this and was upset.  I won’t speak ahead of his Katha.  The Granth will become huge.  I spoke in summary.  Ghanghu kept both words of the Guru.  His face remained black and he also had the power of bringing his words to reality.

Part 99 The Origin of Handaal

Listen to the Sakhi of the most corrupt of the corrupt.  They hid the greatness of the Guru by taking from the Guru and not showing it.  They slandered the Sikhs of the Guru.  The Guru gave them greatness for free.  They couldn’t digest it.  From the water they were created from, they wanted to burn it.  I will tell you how the Niranjanis were created and then I will tell you of their doings.  They were the Jatts of the Ghanag clan that lived in Jandiala.  They followed the Sultani Peer.  They had no clothes or food.  His name was Handaal (or Hindaal).  He heard of the Langar of Guru Ramdas ji.  He heard that people went there and ate as much as they wanted to.  He also heard that you didn’t have to work for food.  There were no shortages there.  He heard of this and went to Amritsar.

Handaal spoke to the Langris and became their friend.  He ate to satiation.  He kneaded dough and lit the ovens.  He still held on to the ways of the Sultani Peer traditions.  He didn’t like the tradition of Sikhi.  It would have came into his heart if he liked it.  Till the steel wool is not scrubbed on the sword, it does not shine.  He came at a good time though.  Sri Satguru ji put his glance on him once.  That was enough to bless him.  It was free.  The Handaal Jaat couldn’t tolerate it.

One day Sri Satguru ji came to the Langar.  The Sikhs got up and bowed to Guru Ramdas ji.  Handaal came as well.  The other Sikhs touched Guru ji’s feet but Handaal’s hands were full of kneaded dough.  He thought about not putting dough on Guru ji’s feet.  He folded his hands behind his back and bowed to Guru ji.  He bowed his head to Guru ji’s feet.  Satguru ji saw this intention and blessed him.  With this thought, the poor Hindaal was blessed.  With this small intention, he was given a lot of joy.  He got free blessings.  A good dish can only contain it.  In raw pots, the water can’t stay.

Part 100 Hindaalias and Niranjanis are Bemukh/ Spoiling the Janamsakhi

Only some can keep the free blessings of the Guru.  The milk of the lioness can only be contained in the golden pot.  Satguru ji told Hindaal to gather Sangat and connect them to the Guru.  Near Jandiala, there were 20 to 30 villages which began to follow Hindaal.  They were known as Niranjanis as they recited the Naam of Akaal Purakh as “Niranjan.”  They all bowed to Hindaal.  Hindaal wanted the Sangat to only come to him and not Guru Ramdas ji.  He thought he had become the Guru.  Guru ji had warned him of not becoming the Guru.  Guru ji said: “if you become the Guru, you will lose Sikhi.  Make the Sangat recite Vahiguru, Dhan Guru.”  The Satguru had instructed him in this way.  Hindaal had received the leadership for free and so he did not value it.  He couldn’t digest the greatness he received.  It was like a donkey wearing the skin of a lion and walking through the fields, eating the grains while scaring everyone.  There have been only a few in this world who received immense wealth and were not egotistical.  That fool became egotistical.  The Guru, who gave him such greatness and wealth, he forgot the Guru.  He said: “I gave him greatness in a previous life and so he gave it back to me.  Who made the Guru so capable?”

Hindaal made a Sarovar in his own village, hearing of the Amritsar Sarovar.  Jandiala Guru was known by his name.  He declared the canal of his home as the Ganga.  He made people bathe in that canal who had killed a cow; as they would usually go to the Ganga.  He tried to be equal to Guru ji.  He tried to hide the Guru’s greatness.  He called his people Niranjanis.  He hid Sikhi.  He called Guru Nanak Dev ji the Avatar of Janak.  He rewrote the Janamsakhi and wrote that Guru Nanak Dev ji was the servant of Raja Janak.  He declared himself as the son-in-law of Raja Janak; and the brother-in-law of Sri Ram Chander ji.  Sometimes he would say: “a person did the Seva of a Sadhoo.  When it was time to receive the boon, I had come and took the boon.”  Sometimes he would say: “I am everything!  I made the Guru capable of giving greatness.  I know his secret.  The ones who worship him are fools.”  Writing such lies, he added them to the Janamsakhis.  The Sikhs then edited them.  The Sikhs caught it right away.  Hindaal declared: “where Prahlaad and Dhroo could not reach, I can reach there.”  He had this written as well.  He hid the greatness of the Guru.  He called his Peer the Jinda Peer.  He committed grave sins and called Guru Nanak Dev ji as the Jinda Peer.  The Jinda Peer was a slave of Sikander (Alexander).  He showed Guru Nanak Dev ji at such a lower lever in his rewritten form of the Janamsakhi.  He called himself the third brother of Sri Kabeer ji and Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji.  He made them all brothers.  He wrote all this in the Janamsakhi.  It was like 4 mounted people set off from Delhi and then saw a person on a donkey.  That person joined the mounted people.  If someone asked about them, the person on the donkey would speak and say; “all 5 of us mounted people are from Delhi.”  He cheated the others and showed himself the leader.  Such was the way of Hindaal.

Listen Gurmukhs, my brothers, I will tell you what Hindaal’s children did.  They caused more damage.  I will tell you their names.  As they died, I will tell you.  They couldn’t digest the free power.  I will tell you.  The sons of Hindaal kept some Sikhi ways.  The grandsons left Sikhi totally.  They changed everything.  The grandsons called themselves Niranjanis.  They did not have faith in the Guru’s home.  They looted the Sangat and ate.  The canopy from the Darbar of Sri Amritsar, they would call for it and place it over their own heads.  They greeted themselves as Kartaar.  They didn’t say the name of Vahiguru.  They said: “our Panth is of Guru Nanak Dev ji.”  Sometimes they called their peer, Jinda.  They kept friendships with Mussalmans and ate with the Sultanis.  There was a corrupt person named Harbhagat among them, who had many Singhs killed.  He told the authorities of the whereabouts of the Singhs.  He was friends with the Turks.  When the Khalsa Panth rose by the power of Sri Satguru ji, Harbhagat had many Singhs killed.  Some heads he sent to Lahore to receive rewards.  He kept the reward money and ate.  He had many Singhs arrested from the villages.  He kept Turk soldiers with him.  He had my villages (Meera Kot) looted twice.  He had my father and grandfather kicked out of our village (Bhai Mehtab Singh ji).  Harbhagat’s great grandchildren: Kirpal and Dyaal, were Ahmed Shah’s friends.  They had many Singhs killed.  The Vadda Ghullughara, where 20 to 30 thousand Sikhs were killed by Abdali, the Singhs knew that the area was full of enemies.  The Singhs had a guard set up there.  They had Sikhs saved from Ahmed Shah.  The Khalsa kicked out Ahmed Shah from the area.  The Niranjanis then called a truce with the Khalsa when the Khalsa became powerful.

There was a time that the Khalsa had some infighting.  Kirpal came to resolve the issue but got killed himself.  The Singhs killed him on purpose.  After he died, his brother sat on the seat, Dyaal Das.  His son, Sharan Das then became the leader.  He drank alcohol, heavily.  He was really tall and strong.  He ate a goat in one day.  He was corrupt and a slave to his carnal pleasures.  He would make passes at the girls from his Sangat.  His Sangat doubted him and didn’t take their women.  No woman came to the Sangat.  He made a story: “to keep Sikhi is difficult.  It is finer than a hair and sharper than an edge of swords.  It is written in the Vedas and the Shasters.  I was testing you.  You failed.  What about the girls and daughters-in-law?  If you would have given them to me, you would have earned Sikhi.  This has been the way since the beginning.  Don’t doubt me.”  He made his own Janamsakhi.  He said: “look at my Janamsakhi.”  They had received greatness for free.  Sharan Das was killed by his own follower.  He was corrupt and a slanderer.  He had no children.

Part 101 Sakhi Shaheed Tara Singh Nihang Danghai

The Sakhi of Tara Singh ji, listen to it oh holders of great wisdom.  He was from the village Bae Dull (Dull-Vaan, near Amritsar).  He was from the Buttar clan.  He was a leader of the Buttars.  He was a strict Tappi, Jatti and kept his Rehit in a good way.  He wore blue clothes and fastened weapons to his body (living the life of a Nihang Singh).  He loved Gurbani and accepted the will of Akaal Purakh within his heart.  Whatever he said, he would give his life for it like a chaste woman Satti.  He was eager to fight and was known as a prominent warrior among warriors.  He had taken Amrit from Guru Gobind Singh ji.  He was such a fighter that would call conflict to his own home, if it was going to another’s.  He kept his head on his palm and did not fear death.  He was always ready to die.  When the Banda was alive, Baba Tara Singh ji fought in his army.  The Mughals began to keep the Singhs happy by giving them Jagirs.  They wanted them to be calm and not start any wars.  When they killed the Banda, many Singhs were killed.  Baba Tara Singh ji was given a Jagir at that time by the authorities to keep him away from the conflicts.  Baba Tara Singh ji constructed a Burj tower in his village to keep watch.  He was wise and thought he was wasting his time by not fighting any battles.  He kept his pride against the authorities.  He didn’t leave his wish of fighting.  He was always in conflicts.  He would enter other’s battles.  He kept 10 Singh fighters with him.  If a complaint came from somewhere, he would love it; seeing it as a sign of battle.  If a Singh was in conflict and came to him, he gave them shelter with joy.  He was not afraid of death.  He was a warrior and joked with death.  If conflict was going to someone else’s home, he would tell it to come to his home at noon.  Such was Tara Singh ji’s way.  He did not accept the authority of the Turks.  He said: “how can I stay away from Dunga (battle)?  That is my last name.  For, the Danga is why Satguru ji created us.  By the Dunga is how we will take the kingdom.  We will be Shaheeds by Danga.  Nobody speaks to us without Dunga.  We will create Dunga.  This is our way.”

In Naushera, there was a Pannu Jatt that lived there.  Sahib Rai Pannu lived there who had two good mares.  He was the Chaudhary.  He would send his horses to graze into the fields of Sikhs.  There were two Singhs who had fields there.  They were poor.  The Chaudhary would send his horses towards the poor Singhs’ fields.  The Singhs went to Sahib Rai and said: “tie your horses because they ruin our fields.”  The Chaudhary said to the Singhs: “you want me to keep my horses but I want to cut your hair and make ropes out of them.  I will tie my horses with your hair.”  The Singhs heard this and their minds and bodies burnt in anger.  They said: “there is nothing we can do about this Chaudhary.  He has hatred for Sikhs.  We have a lot of family in the village.  We would have killed him otherwise.”  They went to the Village Bhussa.  Bhai Baghel Singh ji and Bhai Amar Singh ji Dhillon lived there.  They were good at snatching horses.  They were called to steal the horses at night.  They took the horses and sent them to Ghayalay.  Bhai Lakhmeer Singh ji Sandhu took the horses and sold them to Raja Ala Singh ji in Jungle Desh.  The money that Baba Ala Singh paid, Bhai Lakhmeer Singh ji took the money and gave it to Baba Tara Singh ji for the Langar.

Sahib Rai Pannu sent trackers to find out where the horses went.  The trackers eventually came to Baba Tara Singh ji.  They declared Bhai Baghel Singh ji, Bhai Amar Singh ji and Bhai Lakhmeer Singh ji as the culprits who stole the horses.  They were all with Baba Tara Singh ji at that time, in his protection.  The Singhs knew that Baba Tara Singh ji was always ready to fight and die.  Sahib Rai came to Baba Tara Singh ji and said: “give me the guilty people.  They are thieves.  If you don’t, I will call the army from Lahore.  You can keep them now.  You have kept them, they will go and you will die.”  Baba Tara Singh ji said: “they are not thieves.  You are the thief who ruined the fields of poor Singhs!  These Singhs fulfilled justice.  You can bring the Navaab or his father.  We are ready to die.  I am ready to die fighting the Turks.  We are not made to hide.  We are made to fight!”  The conflict grew as the argument carried on.  A bad time came upon the Singhs.

The Pannu Jatt went to the Navaab of Patti.  He said to him: “you are sitting here in peace.  The Singhs are looting us.  We pay you taxes.  We will give taxes to only one side.”  The Hakim got angry.  It was like a sleeping lion being awake.  He said: “where are the Singhs that stole your horses?”  Pannu said: “they are in the village Bae of the Buttars.  They are in Tara Singh’s Bunga.  They have a watch upon the whole area and rules it.”  The Hakim said: “how many people does he have?”  Sahib Rai said: “he has no people and no fort.  He has about 20 Singhs with him.  5 or 10 come and go to his place.  Some have spears and some have swords.  Some live without weapons.”  The Hakim set off from Patti with Sahib Rai at the front.  He took 80 foot-soldiers and 25 mounted soldiers from Patti.  He came fighting and killing along the way.  He came quickly and didn’t want the Singhs to escape.  He left at night.  He wanted to attack by morning to arrest them.

Baba Baghel Singh ji finished his recitation of Gurbani during Amritvela.  He did Ardaas and was going to the fields to relieve his bodily waste in the morning.  He saw the army of Turks coming.  The Singhs knew the Turks were coming.  He had a spear in one hand and a Tulwar with him in his Gatra.  He had a pot of water in his other hand.  He saw the army and came to a decision: “if I go back to inform the Singhs of the Turks coming, the Singhs would say that I got scared and came back.  They will say: “he started the fight but didn’t fight himself.”  They will eventually find out.  I should start fighting here so it makes noise.  The Singhs will find out this way.”  Bhai Baghel Singh ji shouted and challenged the Turks: “you are going ahead, listen to my words first!”  Sahib Rai recognized Bhai Baghel Singh ji as the one who took his horses.  He said to the Hakim: “this is the one!  Don’t let him go!  He is the big problem among the Singhs.  If he is killed, consider that half of them are killed.  He is the thief who took the horses.  He is a big warrior among the Singhs.”  The Hakim attacked and said: “make sure he doesn’t get away!”  The Singh attacked as well.  A battle started.  Arrows and bullets flew.  Bhai Baghel Singh ji jumped into their lines.  The Turks hit each other with their own weapons.  It was dark still and they couldn’t figure out where to strike.  The Singh struck his spear and tulwar to kill the Turks.  He took some off of their horses.  Zaffar Beg (the Navab of Patti), had a nephew who was killed in the chaos.  Who knows who killed him but Bhai Baghel Singh ji won.  The foot soldiers surrounded the Singh and fired their guns.  They broke his thighs.  As the rifles fired, the Singhs heard.  They came out and attacked the Turks.  The Singhs pushed the Turks back.  Zaffar Beg and his army ran away.  His two brothers and two nephews died when the Singhs attacked.  Zaffar Beg ran away with half his army and came to Kambo ki Maari.  He took the dead bodies of his brothers and nephews and headed to Lahore.  He went to the Khan Bahadhur of Lahore to complain.  When Bhai Baghel Singh ji attained Shaheedi, the Singhs thought about this and spoke to Baba Tara Singh ji.

Part 102 Tara Singh ji Gets Ready to Fight

“You have received victory now.  You should go somewhere else now.  We hope the Turks don’t come and kill us.  Why should we die for no reason?”  Baba Tara Singh ji heard this and said: “I am not in love with my life.  I love the words of the Satguru.  What Sri Guru ji has said: “a Singh is so, who fights the battle, everyday; a Singh is so, who is not shy or scared of death.”  I will stay in the Bunga and fight to death.  I will not run to save my life.”  The Bhujhangis with Baba Tara Singh ji, they were told: “whoever wishes to attain Shaheedi here, stay here.  The others can leave.  There is time to go still.  You won’t be able to run away tomorrow.”  Some heard this and ran away.  Some Singhs wished for Shaheedi and stayed.  The raw ran away.  The solid stayed.  The complete warriors, beloveds of the Guru; they stayed.  Baba Tara Singh ji thought to himself: “the ones that ran away, they lost Shaheedi.  The ones who are beloved to me, I will write to them.  They wanted to attain Shaheedi with me.  We had all taken Amrit from the same Sunehra.  They wanted me to tell them when it was time.  It’s on them if they still wish to come.  I promised them that I would call them if the time for Shaheedi ever came.  We ate together in one Sunehra.”  Baba Tara Singh had two other Buttar cousins with him.  They were great warriors of the Guru.  They had patience and were great warriors.  They earned the words of the Guru.  Two others named Bhai Vasava Singh ji and Bhai Koer Singh ji.  They were Brahmins from Jhallaeeyay.  Bhai Samundh Singh ji and Bhai Jhaab Singh ji were from Multan.  Bhai Soora Singh ji was a Tarkhaan from Khalra.  He came when he got the letter from Baba Tara Singh ji.  Bhai Lakhmeer Singh ji from Gharial came.  Two Sandho Singhs from Bharaneeya came: Bhai Aali Singh ji and Bhai Gurbaksh Singh ji.  Bhai Bheem Singh ji and Bhai Badal Singh ji came from Ratto.  They came hearing Baba Tara Singh ji’s letter.  Bhai Megh Singh ji Gill from Madra came.  Bhai Hata Singh ji Jill came from Choonga.  Bhai Bulaka Singh ji Sekhon came from Saangan.  Bhai Jodh Singh ji Bajwa came from Narowal.  From Peshawar came Bhai Bhogar Singh ji and Bhai Rasaal Singh ji.  They had all promised each other to die together, fighting battles.  From Karbaath, two Singhs came as well.  They prepared their weapons and came.  Bhai Amar Singh ji from Bhusyo, the brother of Bhai Baghel Singh ji, he came to attain Shaheedi.  He came to live with Baba Tara Singh ji.  22 Singhs gathered.  Some were already there.  Some came after.  They had no fort to fight from.  They wanted to give their heads.  The Singhs planted a huge trunk, known as the Ranthunba, to mark their post.  They planted it into the field.  They did the Jhatka of a Chatanga and prepared a Nagara.  They struck the Chobs to play it.  This was the sign of rebellion.  The Khalsa had declared war on the authorities.  The Turks were not to leave now.  They wanted to be attacked.

Part 103 Tara Singh ji Attacked by Moman Khan

The Singhs had a discussion and did the Ardaas to the Satguru.  They recited Banis of the Guru all the time.  Now, listen to what the Turks were doing.  Listen Gurmukh saint brothers to what happened.  When Jaffar Beg of Patti went to the Lahore, he told the bigger Navaab who became angry.  It was like a sleeping lion, waking up.  As Jaffar Beg said the names of the Singhs, it was like gunpowder on fire.  It was Zakarya Khan.  He said: “I didn’t leave any Singhs.  Where did these problematic Singhs come from?  I got tired killing them but they kept growing.”  The Qazi nearby said: “you don’t know about them.  As the blood drops from the Singhs to the ground, that’s how many more are born.  Let’s arrest them and bring them here.  We kill squish their heads in the Mungrans.  Make sure their blood does not fall out.  No more Singhs will be born them.”  One soldier then said: “the Qazi is correct.  Give him to us so he can arrest the Singhs and bring them here.  He hasn’t seen the hands of the Singhs.  Qazi, go and sit with your woman.”  The Qazi was embarrassed.  It was like water on his head.  He couldn’t speak again.  Zakarya Khan said: “go and kill the Singhs.  Is there a brave solider here who can do this?  Surround them and kill them.  We will take revenge for the Deen Mazhab.  Don’t let them run away or hide.  You can take a thousand false oaths to kill the Hindus.  The Rasool has written this.”  Moman Khan was sent along with 2200 soldiers mounted on horses.  40 swivel guns, 5 elephants and 4 canons were sent.  The Naqeeb came and set off from Lahore.  The Sikhs of Lahore heard this: “they will attack Baba Tara Singh ji.”  They spent the day in worry.  At night, then sent a mounted messenger.

The messenger from Lahore came to Baba Tara Singh ji.  He said the Fateh and said: “the army of the Turks is coming this way.  I am going back to Lahore.  I don’t have time to say anything else.  I can’t help you anymore.  I came 15 Kos on my horse at night.  If I am safe, I’ll reach in the morning.  You won’t survive this battle.  You should hide to save your lives.  You only have the night.  The Turks will be here during the day.”  Baba Tara Singh ji’s face was radiant.  He said to the messenger: “I wanted to give my head in battle to the Turks.  I will fight and die here.  I won’t run away to go anywhere else.  I won’t hide in the jungle.  I will give my head to death.  Where would I run to where death is not present?  Wherever I go, death is there.  The Satguru has given me a Hukamnama from the Das Granthi:

If one wishes to run away from death, to which direction would he run towards?

Death will be there, standing, waiting, with its sword in hand, roaring.  How can you be saved?

There has never been a clever person speaking of a special skill; by which effort you may be saved from the strike of death.

Oh fool, from whom you can’t be saved from; why should you not laugh and go to the shelter of the Great Death?  –  Bachittar Natak

Part 104 Tara Singh ji Attains Shaheedi by fighting the Turks

Moman Khan mobilized his army to attack the Singhs.  He took many generals with him.  He wanted to attack at night to surprise the Singhs.  An Uppal Jatt named Ghamanda met the Turks and said to them: “I know where Baba Tara Singh Nihang is.”  Moman Khan told him to lead the way.  Ghamanda took the Turks away from Baba Tara Singh ji’s place and towards the village Dull.  He may have had some conflict with the Dull village that he took them their first.  Maybe he had some compassion towards the Singhs so they could escape or prepare for battle.  Ghamanda sent a messenger to Baba Tara Singh ji: “go and run away quickly.  The Turk army will go back to Lahore of you’re not at your Dhera.  You can come back after a few days.  If you are saved for a half hour, you can be saved for a year.  Why do you want to lose your life for no reason?”  Baba Tara Singh ji said to the messenger: “you are good!  I am thankful for your message.  It’s good you came and told us.  I am grateful for you.  You thought of the brotherhood and gave us the message.  What you said is good.  This is the truth but I am determined to achieve Shaheedi.  I won’t run away to anywhere else.  If we run to save our lives and then come back to live here again, my people will make fun of us.  They will taunt us as being scared.  For this reason, we don’t care for our lives.”  The people of Dull found out about the army coming.  The people came to see the army and said: “we are the subjects of the Badshah.  We pay taxes and obey you.  We don’t have thieves, warriors or Singhs among us.”

As this was happening, the Turks heard the Nagara of the Singhs playing.  The Turks heard this and figured out where the Singhs were.  Their homes were ahead.  They made their horses run.  One of them was a good Pathaan who came to Baba Tara Singh ji ahead of time.  He yelled: “why are you sitting here still?  You will lose your life.  Go to the jungles to hide.  I came ahead to tell you of our army coming.”  Baba Tara Singh ji said to the Pathaan: “great work, my brother!  Where can I run to and hide?  We wish to become Shaheeds right here.”  Baba Tara Singh ji was doing Seva of the other Singhs.  He was getting water for the Dhera from the well.  He brought water for the Singhs baths.  The Singhs said to Baba Tara Singh ji: “you have done a lot of Seva.  Let us do Seva for you today.  We want to make our bodies pure by doing your Seva.”  Baba Tara Singh ji said to them: “the body will be pure if the weapon cuts it; just as Dwarka’s stamp touches the body and makes it pure.  When the Shaster touches our bodies, the sins of the body are washed away.”  Baba Tara Singh ji went to get water from the well.  He saw the Turks coming in the distance.  He came back and said to the Singhs: “whoever wants to run, can go now.  Otherwise pick up your weapons and come outside.  Let go of the covers and fight on the field now.”  The Singhs heard this and came to the battlefield.  The 22 Singhs took their swords, shouting jaikaras.  They came to the field.  The Turks came.  The Nagaras from both sides sounded.  The warriors charged each other like playing Saunchi.  Bhai Balaka Singh ji ran fast and killed about 5 Turks with his sword.  He was hit with an arrow.  He was the first to become Shaheed.  The Singhs held their post as they were playing Saunchi.  The Turks charged.  The Singhs pushed them back.  The dust flew.  The night was blinding.  The Turks charged on their horses.  They wanted to kill the Singhs by the horses.  The Singhs cut the horses instead.  Many Turks fell and died.  Some Turks killed each other in the dark and trampled each other.  Their path was blocked.  Horses fell as both sides fought.  They charged each other.  The Singhs took the Turks off their horses to kill them.  Some were killed by their own weapons.  They shot each other.  Some were killed by the Singhs.  The battle was fierce.  Both sides got tired.  The battle calmed down for a while.  They moved back and didn’t want to fight hand to hand.  The Turks fired arrows and bullets from afar.  They killed the Singhs like this.  The Singhs didn’t have rifles or pistols but the bullets only hit the Turks.  Moman Khan came ahead and ordered a charged.  The Mughal, Takki Beg, rode ahead with force.  He said: “where is Tara Singh?”  Baba Tara Singh ji said: “come!  I’m here!  Go and strike first!”  The Beg ran his horse and fired an arrow.  The arrow passed Baba ji’s Farla.  Baba ji held the Beg’s horse’s reins.  He noticed that Takki Beg was covered in chainmail.  He was covered with metal.  He had metal gloves as well.  Baba ji thought to himself: “I can’t see his body.  His mouth is open.”  Baba ji stabbed the tip of his sword through the Beg’s mouth, breaking his teeth.  Moman Khan saw Takki Beg’s blood-filled mouth and said: “Takki Beg, are you eating Paan?”  Takki Beg said: “yes, Tara Singh is giving out paans.  You can take one too if you are brave.  What are you saying standing so far away?”  Another junior general became brave and wanted to fight.  He told his Mohavat: “take my elephant ahead.”  He fired two arrows at once.  He was a skilled archer.  The elephant went ahead.  The Singhs were tired.  The general wanted to trample the Singhs.  He thought he was safe being high up.  He saw the few Singhs and became happy.  He turned his elephant and fired two arrows at once.  He thought he was a great warrior.  Bhai Bheem Singh ji got happy seeing the elephant.  He struck the elephant like a lion.  He held the elephant’s ear and made it sit down.  The elephant came down and Bhai Bheem Singh ji struck the Mohavat.  The Mohavat blocked himself with his Ankush.  Bhai Bheem Singh ji’s sword broke.  Bhai Bheem Singh ji swung his broken sword again and killed the Mohavat.  Baba Tara Singh ji came to help.  He said to Bhai Lakhmeer Singh ji: “when we were young and tended cows, you used to jump over two cows.  This elephant of a calf is nothing.  Go and kill the Turk.”  Bhai Lakhmeer Singh ji said: “I was thinking the same thing.  Command me!  I will show you, killing the Turk.”  The Singh attacked like a hawk on sparrows.  He took his spear and attacked.  The Turk yelled: “kill him!”  He blocked the first strike.  Bhai Lakhmeer Singh ji stabbed his spear into the Turks shoulder.  The Turk couldn’t fire arrows nor use his sword.  More Singhs came and killed the Turks around the elephant.  Bhai Lakhmeer Singh ji got his chance to finish the task.  He climbed the elephant with a rope.  He chopped the head of the Turk off.  He said: “Baba Tara Singh ji, we have an elephant now.  We won’t let it go.  We will ride this from now on.”  Baba Tara Singh ji said: “we will give Lakhs of elephants to our servants.”  The Singhs sent the empty elephant back to the Turks.  The Turks lost their confidence.

Moman Khan called his Purbi generals.  They had Hazari titles, the two from Bihar.  They were named Mansa Ram and Daya Ram.  They had their own regiments.  They were from Kundalpur.  They attacked the Singhs.  The Singhs faced them.  The Singhs killed Mansa Ram and Daya Ram on the spot.  The Turks ran away, seeing this.  The Singhs had the field now.  The sun came up and there was light.  The Turks saw that there were only a few Singhs.  They attacked the Singhs.  The few Singhs were standing in their areas.  The Turks thought there were more.  They saw some dead Singhs.  They fired all their guns from afar.  They were afraid to come close.  They killed all of the Singhs.  They all became Shaheed.  The Turks cut their heads off their dead bodies.  In this way, Baba Tara Singh ji and the other Singhs were Shaheed.  The Turks only took the heads.  Many Turks were killed.  The 22 Singhs followed their determination through.

Their battle became famous.  Everyone knew of the bravery of the Singhs as they earned the words of the Satguru: “gave their head but not the honour!”  Dhan were those Singhs who died in that battle.  They left their Pranas but not their honour.  This world is for coming and going.  Only the actions remain.

Part 105 Sakhi of Chamunday, Kairon, Nangli, Randhawa

Listen to the Sakhis of other Singhs, who gave their heads, fighting the Turks.  The Singhs kept their faith upon the words of the Guru.  They fulfilled their Sikhi with their hair and breaths.  I will tell you their names, villages and castes; the ones who kept their faith.  I will speak of their Seva by doing this Seva.  I have heard of their histories from my elders.  I am the servant of the Panth and will write it as I heard it from my elders.  The Randhawas lived near Chamunday.  Kairon Nangal was close by.  Some people from that area entered the Panth of the Guru.  They took the Pahul of the Khalsa and began carrying weapons as Sri Satguru ji commanded.  They wanted to do as the Singhs before them did; practicing Shaster Vidya.  They joined the Panth and fought many battles.  They looted along the route between Lahore and Delhi.  Nobody would help them, fearing the authorities so they had to loot to eat.  They would loot the royal treasuries on route from Lahore to Delhi.  This was the way of the Khalsa.  The young men, newly joining the Khalsa, did the same.  The Turks knew about the Singhs.  They told the authorities about the Singhs from Kairon and Chamunday: “we should have them killed.”  The Singhs had no fort to fight from.  They stayed in wells, jungles and any shelter they could find.  When the Singhs heard of the Turks coming, they left their homes.  They went to stay in the jungles.  Their families went to their relatives’ homes and mixed in.  They stayed in the jungles all day and came home at night.  The folk songs of Punjab highlighted this difficult time.  The Singhs stayed away from danger in this way.  The Turks couldn’t catch them.  The Turks would be upset at not finding the Singhs.  They were depressed that they couldn’t find the Singhs.  They wanted to kill the Singhs.  The Singhs wanted to pass the time.  They would say: “will our time ever come?  We hide to save our lives.  One day the Turks will hide.  The Khalsa will rule in every place.  We will take our land and rule.  The Guru’s words cannot be false.  The pain we face now, these are the taxes we are receiving.”  The Singhs would spend time amongst their families, relatives, clansmen and friends.  That’s how they lived on a day-to-day basis, hiding, wearing the Guru’s Bana.

Now, listen to those Singhs’ history.  The sinners made them Shaheed.  The people of Shazada village were followers of the Sultani, Sakhi Sarvar.  They were Hindus but behaved like Turks.  The Turk Kalaals joined them.  The Kalaals were the employees of the Turks.  They all gathered and decided: “let’s have the Randhawa Singhs killed.  They are in our area now.  Let’s have the authorities write the deeds of their lands to us.  Let’s have their children and women killed as well.  Make sure the pregnant girls are killed with the unborn children as well.  The Turks will be happy with us.  They will reward us with Siropas and statuses.”  They discussed their sinful intentions in secret.  They went to the Turks and told them their plan.  This is what the Turks wanted.  They agreed to their plan.  They were promised villages for killing the families of the Singhs.  They had the permission to kill unborn children.  The deeds were written on their names.  They wanted the Hindus to kill the Sikhs.  They wanted the Singhs dead.  As they saw Singhs, they had their heads priced by the Turks.  The Singhs didn’t know about this plan, that their own neighbours had turned against them.  Most of the Hindu Sakhi Sarvar followers were Randhawas as well.  The Singhs hid during the day and came home at night.  When the Singhs gathered at night, they would make their plans.  Where they gathered, the Turks found out about where they were.  The Sultanis lived in the same village.  There was one solid spy they had who kept an eye on the Singhs.  He informed the Turks of their every movement.  The spy told the Jatts who told the Turks.  Death faced the Singhs in this way.

They were Hindu by name but worked for the Turks.  The Hindus had their own brothers attacked and had their heads cut.  Death came close to the Singhs.  One night, the Singhs came to their own homes.  The spy told on them.  The Turks came and surrounded the Singhs.  The army surrounded the whole village.  The corrupt Jatts came as well, right away.  They held a strict perimeter.  They made sure that not even a dog left the village.  As the corrupt Sultani Jatts said, the Turks did.  They got together and killed the Singhs.  They killed everyone they found.  They found about 14 Singhs.  They cut their heads.  They killed the Singhs and the neighbours who were their relatives.  Children and women were killed.  Whoever they saw in the village, they killed.  They killed them with swords.  They killed all of them, seeing them as friends of the Singhs.  They said: “they are their own.”  The Majail Singhs endured this pain.  They had no idea if they were ever going to rule.  So understand this, who was going to give the kingdom to the Singhs?  These Singhs gave their heads for the kingdom.  They wanted the kingdom.  They had to fight for it.  The Turks wanted to see if any relative remained.  As the Singhs received kingdom and land, I will tell you.

One Singh survived named Sahib Singh.  He was a child.  He was with his relatives in another village or he was hidden.  He became the Ardaasia of the True Darbar in Amritsar.  He was the guard in Amritsar.  The Darbar is the place where the kings of kings bow to.  The Guru blessed that Randhawa child.  He received the great status.  His children and grandchildren grew.  They took the lands of their elders from the Turks by fighting for it.  The Randhawas came back to their lands after a while.  They took revenge by the might of the Khalsa.

Part 106 Sakhi of Sri Kapoor Singh ji Navaab Bhujhangi

This is the Sakhi of the beginning of Navaab Kapoor Singh ji.  He received the Navaabi from the Turks.  He was a brave and complete warrior.  I will now write the Sakhi of Kapoor Singh ji.  I will write it as the elders told me.  They saw him with their own eyes.  When the Banda won the Turks, the Turks won him after.  The Banda went against the Khalsa.  His end came near.  He wanted the Singhs dead.  The Khalsa figured out his plan and distanced themselves from him.  They came to Guru Chak, Amritsar.  The Mughals heard of this.  They were happy hearing this.  They congratulated each other.  They wanted the Singhs to divide.  They sent messengers with money for the Singhs.  They fell to Baba Binod Singh Ji’s feet (the 9th generation of Guru Angad Dev ji).  They said: “whatever the Singhs want, we will give them.”  They swore upon the Quran, many times.  They said: “we will never step foot in Guru Chak.  You can have Melas here without any doubt.  Go to Nankana or Rori Sahib.  Dehra and Khadoor; Taran Taaran and Guru ka Mahal; have melas there without doubt.  Do what you wish at the places of the Gurus.  Guru Nanak Dev ji is our Peer.  We are his Sikhs.  We won’t ask you for taxes.”  The Turks said this to the Singhs and convinced them.  They gave them hope in this way: “if you wish to have the Singhs employed in the royal army, we will hire them and keep them with us.”  They wanted the Singhs to be sent away.  Baba Binod Singh ji and Baba Kahn Singh ji, the Trehan Bawas, the Turks bowed to them and tried to convince them.  They gave them money.  The Bawas had 500 Singhs each in their regiments.  More Singhs came to them to join the Khalsa.  The Turks used other methods to convince the Singhs.  The Turks paid for the Singhs.  They wanted the Singhs to be at peace and stop practicing Shaster Vidya.  The Turks were afraid of the Banda as a sparrows fear the hawk.  They didn’t want the Singhs to join the Banda.  This was their strategy.  The Turks wanted to pass time.  The Panth wanted to pass time as well.  The Singhs wanted the kingdom still.  The Turks wanted to maintain their kingdom.  A fake truce was called between the Singhs and Turks but they all wanted to fight.  The Turks gave a lot of money to the Singhs to renovate the Guru’s places.  The Singhs sat at Guru Chak and received money.  Baba Darbara Singh ji was the Divaan of the Panth.  Baba Darbara Singh ji was a Baaniya and took Amrit from Guru Gobind Singh ji along with his 3 brothers.  They were Guru ji’s Divaans.  They were well educated.  Baba Darbara Singh ji was the next Jathedaar of the Panth.  He still kept the treasury.  The Panth Khalsa revered him for his qualities of being a good person and that he was with Guru Gobind Singh ji.  Baba Darbara Singh ji took care of the whole Panth.  Nobody was jealous of him or saw themselves equal to him.  Everyone respected him.  Bhai Mani Singh ji was the Granthi.  They were all wise.  They all ate Langar at one place.  They gave all of the Singhs clothes as well.  They gave 2 Cholas, 2 Dumaalaas and 2 Kacheras to every Singh, every year.  The Panth grew by the day at this time.  The Singhs didn’t stop from fighting though.  They continued looting the authorities.
