Part 86 The Death of Farrukhsiyar
Now, about the Shah, what the Banda had said: Farrukhsiyar was also blinded by two Syed brothers. They were Hassan Khan and Abdhulla Khan. They arrested Farrukhsiyar and took the throne by the help of the Mahrattas. They kept the Shah in the jail for many days. When he was about to die, the Banda’s words came true. The Shah remembered the Banda’s words. The Shah bought a horse for himself a few days ago. He wasn’t able to ride her. He thought to himself: “I couldn’t ride her. My wish remained unfulfilled.” His loyal people talked to the Syeds. They said to the Shah: “you can ride your horse. We will hold the reins. You can ride her.” Farrukhsiyar liked this. The horse was saddled. The blind Shah mounted the horse by the help of his people. The horse walked slowly. As he came out, the curse of the Banda was about to be completed. The horse ran, escaping the other men. A hawk had come close which scared the horse. The Shah fell off the horse but his foot was caught into the stirrup. The Shah was dragged by the horse. Many tried to surround the horse by running after her. The horse thought she was chased by a ghost. She was scared and ran fast. The Banda’s words became true. The Shah died by being dragged by the horse. Both died in the same way. I, Rattan Singh, wrote it as I heard it. I wrote everything I heard. In 1781 Vikram, Farrukhsiyar died in this way. He got what he deserved. When Murray heard the history of the Banda, he wanted to hear further. In Hijri 1133, Farrukhsiyar died. You can calculate Vikram.
Part 87 The State of the Khalsa after the Banda
Murray asked me: “tell me further. After the Banda died, what happened to the Khalsa?” I said to Murray: “the Khalsa stayed in this land, just like birds stay in the land of hawks. The deer stay among the lions. Some worked. Some had Jageers. Some stayed in the Dharamsalas and Boongas. Some ploughed their fields and had their taxes waived. The Turks had them fit back in. The Tatt Khalsa weren’t cheated by anyone. They tolerated nakedness, hunger, and pain. They weren’t afraid to die. The Bhujhangi Lions weren’t caught by the Turks. They lived in the jungles and caves. They looted Turks and ate. They didn’t give way to Turks to travel. The Singhs lived across rivers and anywhere where passage was narrow. They didn’t let the Turks cross the river. They were called the Tatt Khalsa. They weren’t afraid to die or kill. The Bandai Khalsa that survived, they hid from the Turks. The ones that came to the Tatt Khalsa, they were readmitted and kept by the Khalsa. The Bandai still had deceit in their minds. They stayed detached from the Tatt Khalsa. They wore red, didn’t consume garlic, meat and other items the Khalsa consumed. They wanted the Bandai Panth to grow. They had hatred towards the Khalsa.
Part 88 The Battle between the Bhujhangis and the Bandai
The Bhujhangis and the Bandais had a battle. Many were beaten and looted. I will tell you what happened. Bhai Kaan Singh ji Trehan, the son of Bhai Binod Singh ji, had separated from the Bandais. He spoke to the Turks and came to an agreement. He had them allot a daily allowance of 500 Rupees. He kept 500 mounted Singhs with him. They wore blue and had Chakras on their Dumaalaas. They followed the Rehit of the Bhujhangis and recited Bani and Ardaas. They never shied away from a fight. No reciter of the Bhaang or butcher was allowed to come close to their Dhera. The Turk Dheras were to be far from them. They stayed in Amritsar. They did their Melas in Amritsar during Vaisakhi and Diwali. They had it written from the Lahore Darbar. The money that came from the Jor Melas, was given as taxes.
Diwali came and Bhai Kaan Singh ji wrote to the Sangat: “we have spoken to the Turks. Come to Amritsar without fear.” From Lahore, Peshawar and Delhi, the Sangat had all come. The Turks’ mouths were tied. Everyone knew these. The Turks swore upon the Quran to stay away from the Sikhs. When the Sikhs and Turks agreed, the Turks said: “we will protect the Sangat.” The Thanaydaars were told to keep the peace. They were sent to Amritsar to protect the people. 10,000 Rupees was the tax agreed upon. It was a Mela for 10 days. The Turks were to protect the peace. The Sangat came without fear. They still said: “if we die at the door of the Satguru, it is better to die there than to live.” Many Sikhs came to Amritsar. They brought a lot of money. A lot of money gathered there. 10,000 was given to the Turks. The rest was kept. The Bandais saw this and were burning with jealousy. They came to the Tatt Khalsa to claim the money. The Khalsa said: “what claim do you have? How are we together? You say the Darshani Fathe and we say the Guru’s Fateh. You are Vaishnavas and we have all 4 castes. You wear red and we don’t touch it. We wear blue but you shy away from it. You don’t have any place in Amritsar. You’ve never taken claim from here before.” The Bandais had ego. They said: “we will make the Sangat follow the Banda as the Satguru gave all his powers to the Banda. No Sodhi can speak to us.” The Khalsa said: “you fools don’t understand that Satguru ji gave the Gurta Ghaddi and all his powers to the Khalsa.” They argued as they didn’t agree. The Bandais left without the money.
Next year, the Bandais came back and decided to take all of the money. The Bandais set up their Dhera near Akaal Boonga. They hosted their Nishans and set up a small fort. They took charge of the Darshani Deodi. They set up huts and tents. The Bandais came there and set up their claim. They came before the Tatt Khalsa. They would have other people join them. The Bandai Sangat grew. Many of the Bandais had powers they learnt from the Banda. The people go where their needs are met. They made anyone their Guru who can fulfill their wishes. Many people joined the Sangat of the Banda. The Bandais got happy seeing this. They said: “we will have our Pooja done separately. Our money will be separate.” The Khalsa saw this and got ready to fight. They said: “we can either fight and kill them or stay quiet and sit.” The wise ones advised against a fight. The Bhujhangis said: “we won’t be afraid of them. We won’t shy away from the Bandais. We are ready to fight the Shah. If we give them the money now, there will be a line drawn from now on. They will start their own Maryada. We won’t let a new tradition start here. We won’t shy from fighting and dying.” Bhai Mani Singh ji said: “be patient. The Sangat that has come for the Mela, they will have damages.”
The Khalsa said to the Bandais: “it is not right to argue right now. If we fight each other, we will go astray. The Turks will kill the Sangat, as they would get their excuse. It would be like a cat coming in between two fighting sparrows. If we fight, the Turks will intervene.” When the Bandais heard this, they became prouder. They said: “the Singhs are under us now. We can have them killed by the Turks. We will give the Turks double the tax. We will make the Turks and break their backs. They are greedy. We will tempt them so they kill the Khalsa.” The Bandais wrote to the Turks: “we will give you double the money. Help us.” The Turks liked this. They got more money and they saw the Sikhs fighting among themselves: “they will fight, die and go astray.” The Thanaydaar was greedy. He said: “the Bandais will die, who are always fighting.” The Singhs understood that the Bandais were going to cause a conflict. “It is better to fight one on one. They won’t let it go.” The Bhujhangis thought: “whatever will be, will be. The Bandais and Turks will be sacrificed to the Chandi (sword).” Bhai Kaan Singh ji spoke: “we won’t be trusted by the Sangat if we fight. We called the Sangat from far away. In the fight, they will lose their lives. Tolerate the more or less they say. Don’t fight in the mela. When the people leave, you can do as you please.”
Part 89 The Letters
The people went home. The Bandais asked for half of the money offerings. They had the support of the Turks. The Thanaydaar of the Turks, he was greedy. He began to instigate a fight. He thought to himself: “if they fight and die, we will be the crows.” The Bandais were to face their destiny. Listen Gurkmukhs, the Khalsa avoided the time but the Bandais got anxious. They spoke taunting words towards the Khalsa, saying: “the Khalsa will lose now. The Turks are on our side and we will defeat the Khalsa. We will take half our claims from all of the Gurduaras.” They became egotistical. They said: “half of the money is ours. We want half.” The Singhs said: “this is our Guru’s Darbar. You are owed nothing. Leave the Fateh Darshan. Join us and take the Pahul. Let go of the casteism and call yourself the Panth Bhujhangi.” The Bandais did not agree. They wanted to stay Vaishnavas. They didn’t hunt or use garlic. They said: “our Guru had a lot of powers. Our Guru can make mustard on his hands. He has a lot of powers. He can fly for 100 Kos. The 6 Darshans call him the Guru.” The Singhs said: “we don’t follow the Banda as the Guru. His Mantras and Jantras don’t work in front of our Tegh. Let’s fight then! We will test your Mantras and Jantras.” The argument grew. The fight happened. Some of the descendants of Baba Bhudda ji and Bhai Salo ji were there. The grandsons of Bhai Bhagtoo ji and Bhai Behlo ji along with Masands and Mevras called for peace. Bhai Mani Singh ji said: “the Turks want the Hindus to fight and die.” The wise ones from both sides spoke. Some of the descendants of Sikhs were on the Bandais side. They said: “let’s come to an agreement without fighting. If you listen to us, let’s have peace. We will trust the Karta Purakh. The Karta will do something. Both sides should agree.” Bhai Mani Singh ji said: “everything is in the hands of the Karta Purakh. Why fight and die? We will write two letters and put them in the Darbar. We will do Ardaas and put them in the Sarovar. We will write the Fathe Darshan on one and the Guru’s Fateh on the other. The one that floats will be accepted by all. The one that drowns, they will have to leave their traditions. Nobody will follow that Panth.” The Turk said: “if both drown then we get everything.” Both sides agreed to this. They trusted the Kartar. The Khalsa was to be the Paatshaah. How would the Khalsa lose? The Khalsa had faith that they would win. They said: “we have the faith upon the Satguru. The Khalsa’s powers are to grow by the day.” The Khalsa saw all of the good omens. The wise ones wrote the letters. The letters were placed inside the Harmandhir Sahib. Everyone stood and did the Ardaas: “oh omniscient Satguru, you know everything. You know past, present and future. The Panth you wish to grow, the one that will stay till the earth’s end, may their letter float across. The Panth that is not to survive, their letter should drown. Nothing is hidden from you. You are the Karta and the Vidhata.” A young girl was made to spin some string. The string was tied to both letters. A young child was called to take the two letters and placed into the Sarovars near the Har Ki Pauri area. As the letters were placed into the Sarovar, both letters sunk into the Sarovar. Both sides got worried. They said: “we hope both don’t drown. Both won’t survive then. The Hindus will not be found.” Many wise ones stood and said: “if they both survive, both Panths will survive.” They all stood and did the Ardaas: “please bring out the letter whom you wish to illuminate.” As they did the Ardaas, one of the letters came back up to the surface. The life returned to the Sikhs, saying: “the Guru listened to our Ardaas.” Both sides ran to take the letter out of the Sarovar. They took out their weapons as they ran to catch the letter. The Turk Thanaydaar said: “I will check!” He read the letter and gave it to the Khalsa. Bhai Mani Singh ji opened the letter up and read it. With a loud and strong voice, he yelled out: “Vahiguru ji ka Khalsa, Vahiguru ji ki Fateh! The Guru’s Fateh has come to the surface!” He said this to both sides. The Khalsa was really happy to hear this but the Bandais were like their parents had died. They got scared. It was like their kingdom was gone; like the snake losing its Mani; like a fish suffering out of the water. They thought hard and had regret. They took deep breaths. They couldn’t find a way out of this, not through the ground nor the sky. They rubbed their hands and scratched their heads. They couldn’t find a place to hide. The Khalsa yelled out Jaikaras. They yelled out the Fatehs to each other. They held their Khandas and celebrated. Some did Ardaas and some recited Gurbani. The Khalsa was happy. The Khalsa was victorious in the Court of the Supreme, the Harmandhir Sahib. The Panth was happy as though the Devatas had killed the Daynts. The Sikhs that were Khalsa before and had become Bandais, they came back to the Dhera of the Khalsa. Some of the Bandais ran away and some just went numb. They stayed quiet. Some were egotistical and ready to die. Their death was upon them. Listen to what happened to them.
Part 90 Miri Singh and Sangat Singh Wrestle
The Bandais had a representative named Bhai Lahora Singh Kalaal. He used to be part of the Tatt Khalsa but was now with the Bandais. He was sent by the Bandais to speak to the Tatt Khalsa Singhs. His son was with him as well, named Sangat Singh. Baba Kaan Singh Trehan ji said to him: “the Tatt Khalsa wishes to open their hand upon the Bandais. Don’t say after that you weren’t warned. I am warning you now since you are a wise person. The Guru has spoken. Why is there any doubt now? For this reason, the Singhs are upset.” Bhai Miri Singh Trehan ji was called and told to wrestle Sangat Singh. This was to be the deciding factor, since the Bandais still did not accept the decision of Guru Ram Das ji. Miri Singh and Sangat Singh began to wrestle. They had decided that whoever wins would bring the other into their Panth. It was settled. Miri Singh was Bhai Kaan Singh ji’s son and Sangat Singh was Lahora Singh’s son. They wrestled at Akal Takhat. The whole Panth watched. Miri Singh locked hands with Sangat Singh. Sangat Singh was thrown down with a quick jerk. The Tatt Khalsa won again. They were told to bring a bore to Jhatka. The bore was slaughtered. A piece of the cooked bore was placed in Sangat Singh’s mouth and another was placed in Miri Singh’s mouth. In this way, Bhai Lahora Singh’s son was made into a Bhujhangi. It was now Lahora Singh’s turn. He stood with his hands folded. He was ready to come back into the Panth but convinced them not to give him the bore meat.
Listen to what happened with the Mahant who was the Jathedaar of the Bandais. He died. The Khalsa told him: “leave your Dhera from here now!” The Mahant did not agree and the conflict grew. Both sides got upset and got into a fight. When the Khalsa picked up their hands, nobody could stop them. They yelled: “Akaal Akaal,” and ran towards the Bandais. They picked up the boundaries of the Dhera. Both sides struck weapons but the Bandais couldn’t face them. The Mahant that sat on the throne, the Khalsa killed him. The seat was on a cart. The Singhs ran and sat on his seat, claiming their right. The Mahant was from Khemkaran. He was from the Kamboj caste and his name was Mahant Singh. The Singhs did not hurt the ones that dropped their weapons. The Khalsa killed the Bandais that fought back. Their bodies piled up. The ones that surrendered came back into the Panth. The radiance of the Panth spread. Only the ones that said the Fateh of the Guru survived. The name of Akaal spread. No Bandai survived. Some hid and survived. They eventually came into the Panth as well.
Where the Bandais had their seat set up, the Singhs made Bhai Mani Singh ji sit there. Whoever came to his shelter, Bhai Mani Singh ji gave them the Tankhaa and entered them back into the Panth. Bhai Nanoo Singh Dhesi, Bhai Lahora Singh and Bhai Syam Singh Kalaal were brought back into the Panth. Bhai Baksheesh Singh ji from Chamiara along with the grandsons of Bhai Bhagtoo ji who were Navaabs were also brought back into the Panth. Everyone was given blue clothes to wear. The descendants of Bhai Bhagtoo ji and Bhai Behlo ji said: “we won’t refuse what you give us. We are your servants. We will wear what you give us.” In this way, peace was restored and the conflict of the Bandais and the Bhujhangis was solved. As I, Rattan Singh, heard it, I have written it here.
Part 91 Baba Binod Singh and Kaan Singh Tehan
Guru Angad Dev ji was from the Trehan clan and Guru Amar Das ji was from the Bhalla clan. Their descendants had taken the Pahul of the Khanda and became Bhujhangis. Bhai Binod Singh ji and Bhai Kaan Singh ji were Trehan Sahibzadas. Baba Binod Singh ji was the Jathedaar sent with Baba Banda Singh ji Bahadhur from Hazoor Sahib by Guru Gobind Singh ji. Bhai Kaan Singh ji was his son. Bhai Kaan Singh ji’s son was Bhai Miri Singh Bhujhangi. Bhai Miri Singh ji and Bhai Kaan Singh ji met with the Turks. They had peace restored. They had called a truce.
Part 92 Gulab Rai calling himself the Guru
Listen to the Sakhi who called themselves the Guru after Guru Gobind Singh ji. They were in conflict with the Tatt Khalsa. They lost and died with regret. I will tell you about a woman who cheated him. She did not have sons in her destiny. She used her cleverness to get two sons. I will tell you the names of the two sons: Bhavanio and Gurio. She was from the clan of Mehras. She had no sons. She found out that Baba Gulab Rai ji gave boons to others for sons. She went to Sodhi Gulab Rai ji. The Mehri woman came after hearing that the Sodhi Baba gave boons of sons and milk. She came to the Damdama Sahib where Guru Gobind Singh ji once sat. Baba Gulab Rai ji sat there on a throne. The Mehri came there and stood there. She requested with her hands folded: “I wish to have a relation with the world. Give me sons and join me to the world. Only with sons can one be joined with the world. Without sons, the life is useless. This is my wish. Please complete it. I wish for sons. I wish for two sons with long lives. I wish to be related to the world.” Bhai Sulakhano Masand of Sirhind along with some other Mevras were standing there. They pleaded for the Mehri woman. When the Sangat also pleaded, Baba Gulab Rai ji closed his eyes and checked her destiny. He soon opened his eyes and spoke out loud: “she does not have sons in her destiny.” When the Mehri heard this, standing up, she ran and brought back a paper and quill. She folded her hands and made a request: “if it hasn’t been written then write it now! You are the writer, there and here. You didn’t write it before so write it now. If one is to live out their life by the predestined Karma, then how and why would we do the Guru’s Seva? If the Guru can’t give, why be his Sikh?” Seeing the stubbornness of the woman, the Sangat laughed. Baba Gulab Rai ji looked at the Sangat’s wish and picked up the quill. He laughed and wrote down: “Gurio, the name of your son.” The Mehri bowed to the paper and put in on her head.
The woman put the paper in her personal Mandir in her home. She had a son within one year. She named him Bhavanio and not Gurio as Baba Gulab Rai ji wrote. She told everyone his name. The Mehri then remembered: “I need to ask the Baba about Gurio.” She came to Baba Gulab Rai ji and said: “where is my son Gurio?” Baba Gulab Rai ji asked: “who is in your lap?” The Mehri said: “this is Bhavanio. You should see what you wrote. Did you write Bhavanio or Gurio?” Baba Gulab Rai ji laughed and said: “this Mehri is clever! Here, I will give you Gurio this second time.” Gurio was then born to the Mehri woman. Both sons were born with cleverness. The woman did cleverness in front of the Guru.
Part 93 How Baba Gulab Rai called himself the Guru/ His wealth/ Meeting Bahadhur Shah
If someone asks: “since when did Baba Gulab Rai become the Guru?” I would tell them how. When Bahadhur Shah came to Sirhind, he called for Sulakhana Masand and asked: “tell me if there is anyone from the family of the Satguru. I wish to meet him.” Sulakhana Masand brought Baba Gulab Rai ji to meet Bahadhur Shah. Whoever was on the throne of Guru Nanak Dev ji, the Shahs would call them “Ramdas.” Bahadhur Shah called Baba Gulab Rai ji the Satguru. Bahadhur Shah knew that he was given the kingdom by the Satguru. He was respectable towards Sulakhana. Sulakhana made them meet. The Shah would get up when the Guru would come and both would walk towards each other. The Shah would fold his hands. Sulakhana trained Baba Gulab Rai ji on this tradition. The Guru would grab the hands of the Shah. Satguru ji would ask how the Shah was. Baba Gulab Rai ji did the same thing. When Bahadhur Shah met Baba Gulab Rai ji, he said: “by your Darshan, I am well.” This tradition was kept by Baba Gulab Rai ji. The Shah was Guru Gobind Singh ji’s Sikh. He did what he was told. He set up a throne for Baba Gulab Rai ji. From that day on, Baba Gulab Rai ji sat in Anandpur, calling himself the Guru. He sat on a throne. He did this for about 2 years. The grandson of Sulakhana told me this. His name was Bhai Hazoori. I have written what he told me. Bhai Hazoori’s follower is now Sukhan Das. We meet quite often.
Listen to the other history about Baba Gulab Rai ji of how he met with the other descendants of the Gurus. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji had 5 sons who were radiant and respectable: Baba Gurditta ji, Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji, Baba Ani Rai ji, Baba Atal Rai ji and Baba Sooraj Mal ji. These were the five Sahibzadas of Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. I won’t write about the 4, I will only mention Baba Sooraj Mal ji. Baba Sooraj Mal ji had two sons (grandsons): Baba Gulab Rai ji and Baba Syam Chand ji. This is the history of Baba Gulab Rai ji. I will tell you what happened to him. Whatever happened to Syam Chand ji, I won’t write it all. If I need to, I may write it ahead. I will write as I need. Listen to Gulab Rai’s history, to what happened to him. Gulab Rai Sodhi’s wealth and family grew. He had a lot of sons and grandsons. There was no end to his wealth. Dalel Singh ji and Jodh Singh ji were his sons. He had others. I can’t write all of their names here. The Granth would get really big. He had 18 sons and grandsons. Some were married and some were unmarried. They all died. Baba Gulab Rai ji became egotistical. A lot of wealth came to his home. He would sit on a throne and hold Jormelas. Money from every direction came to him. The money made is wisdom illusioned. His bad time came upon him. He died in a year or two. His family died as well. They suffered the doing of Gulab Rai ji. This is what happened to Baba Gulab Rai ji.
Part 94 Gulab Rai’s Children Dying/ Conflict with Sant Gurbaksh
If someone asks: “when Gulab Rai was calling himself the Guru, he gave the gifts of sons to the Mehri. What sin did he do?” I will tell you his bad action. He had a lot of money. He sat in Anandpur as the Guru on the place where Guru Gobind Singh ji used to sit. Baba Gulab Rai ji should have respected that place. Instead, he sat on Guru ji’s throne. He sat on the Guru Ghaddi with his feet up. He gave 60,000 Takkas to the Pahari Raja that took over Anandpur again. He bought 60 villages around the area. He bought the land and became egotistical. He fought with the Khalsa. Wherever the places of Satguru ji were, Gulab Rai ji set up his thrones there. He did not take the Pahul of the Khanda. He would give Charan Pahul to his followers. He did other wrong things which I will tell you. When Satguru ji left this land, nobody wanted to stay there. Sant Gurbaksh ji Udaasi stayed at the place of Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji. He claimed the place as his but Baba Gulab Rai ji wanted to claim it for himself because he bought the land from the Raja. He wanted the Sadhoo to leave the place of Guru ji. Their conflict grew. He claimed the place of Guru ji. He said: “I have bought this place.” The Sant said: “Sikhs, sons are all brothers. They love each other. I make the claim of this place.” Both fought over the place everyday.
One day, Gulab Rai ji called his sons and had Baba Gurbaksh ji beaten. The sons disrespected Baba Gurbaksh ji’s hair. They pulled his dreadlocks. The Sant cursed them: “your descendants will not remain and nor will their father.” Baba Gulab Rai ji spoke: “your sons will not remain either.” The Sant said: “I may still have some blind or handicap follower survive who will light the Dhoona; but your roots will not remain.” He cursed him with anger. In this way, the sons and grandsons of Baba Gulab ji did not survive. Sant Gurbaksh ji had no one left either. Their words were like swords that swung from both sides. It is like a diamond cutting a diamond; like iron cutting iron. They were all gone. Sant Gurbaksh ji moved to Raipur. Baba Gulab Rai ji went to Pataalpuri. As Rattan Singh heard it, I have written it.
Part 95 A Sikhs raw home becomes permanent
There was a time when the Satguru gave blessings of bliss. When Satguru ji was in Damdama, it was like the sun and moon in the sky. A Sikh stood and folded his hands. He said: “my home is raw. It is made of grass and mud. My daughter-in-law came from a solid home. She wishes for a solid home.” Guru ji laughed and said: “if you wish for a permanent home then burn the home made of grass and mud.” The Sikh heard this and came home. He said to his neighbours: “I am going to burn my home.” The neighbours said: “you cursed person! Why are you burning your home?” The Sikh told them what Guru ji said: “my Guru has told me that in order for my home to be permanent, I have to burn my home of grass and mud. I will burn it right now.” The neighbours and the Sikh got into a fight. The Sikh took a torch and burnt his home. The people ran to their homes to protect their homes and the Sikh’s. The Sikh’s home burnt and then he came to Guru ji. On the way, he saw piles of money. He looked around and realised nobody owned them. The Sikh picked up the money and went to Satguru ji. He placed the bags of money in front of Guru ji and stood there. Satguru ji said to him: “take the money and make your home like Sudhama did.” The Sikh then went to the kiln to get bricks. When the bricks were baked, he had masons brick his home. The other homes that burnt in the fire, he built those homes as well. They all got new homes. Whichever home was touched by the fire, the Sikh made their homes permanent. Some neighbours regretted: “why didn’t our homes burn in the fire?”
