Panth Parkash II Part 1 – 10

Part 1 The Banda Captured

When the Banda was arrested, the Turks began to bother the Singhs.  They wanted to kill the Singhs by gathering them in one place.  The Singhs knew about the Turks’ cheating nature.  The Singhs took their Dhera ahead from Amritsar.  Such was the way of the Singhs.  The Turks wouldn’t leave them.  The Singhs had no fort to fight from or be protected in.  The Singhs went to the mountains for protection.  They stayed there as rebels.  Many times, the Singhs stood and fought.  They received Shaheedi in this way.  This was their bad time.  The Singhs stayed in jungles and wells.  Baba Banda Singh ji tried to curse the Panth.  When the Panth did not come to the Banda’s aid in Gurdas Nangal, the Banda became more jealous.  This is what people said without knowing the truth.  The Singhs separated, some more and some less in places.  They spent their day in this way in hiding.  I will say another Sakhi and then I will tell you how Kapoor Singh ji received the Navaabi

Part 2 Mulkheyeeas Fight the Singhs

The Turks that wanted to make their Deen grow in numbers, the Bivaastas (the volunteer army for Jihaad), let me tell you of their Sakhi.  They were gathered to make them fight the Singhs.  Listen to their story, as they fought in the name of Khuddah.  Aslam Khan got tired fighting the Singhs and came to Lahore.  His kingdom broke down.  He couldn’t collect the taxes.  The Khalsa looted the people for taxes.  Without money, Aslam Khan’s army left him.  Without an army, how would he collect taxes?  Without money, the Shah is not anyone’s friend.  He had to collect money from the people who were looted by the Banda.  The Khalsa looted the leftover.  The Delhi Badshah had no tax either.  The Shah sent an army to collect taxes.  1,000 special soldiers came.  Among them were 2 Pathaans: Attaullah Khan and Mohabbat Khan.  They were big generals who lived in Faridabad.  They came to Lahore.  Listen to what happened.  The people came to complain in Lahore.  The Mussalmaans were believed.  The Mullahs, Qazis and Malangs got together to bother the Navaab.  They needed money from Aslam Khan.  The whole court was full of Mussalmaans.  Aslam Khan said: “the Singhs have taken all of the money.  Let’s make an effort to save the Deen.  Let’s make a guerilla force to save the Deen.”  The Mussalmans took this side.  The ones who were going to die, Karma brought them there.  They corrupted Aslam Khan.  Aslam Khan said: “let’s go to Lahore.  Don’t ask for food.  Don’t ask to come with me.  Take your own responsibilities.”  In Eedga, they hoisted the Haidari flag and said: “come who follows the Deen.”  The ones that wanted to die for the name of Khuddah, they all came, tying their waists.  They thought they were going for glory.  They didn’t know that they were going to be eaten by the Jumms.  They made noise in the name of Jihaad.  They set up Dheras in Lahore.  Mohammed Takki and Anayat Khan hoisted more flags.  They said: “the ones who volunteered for no pay, come here.”  Murtaza Khan Saudagar joined them to kill the Singhs.  Hazi Beg Mughal joined them.  Peer Mohammed and other slanderers came.  Inayat Ulla from Travari came, who was a Rajput Muslim.  He got stuck too.  Raja Todar Mal was one of Akbars Divaan.  His son was Pahaar Mal.  Pahaar Mal’s son came.  His death was near too.  He joined them.  He set up his Dhera with the Turks.  He announced: “whoever runs out of money, I will support them.”  The 1,000 mounted force that came from Delhi also joined them, as they were convinced by Aslam Khan.  They gave their canons and swivel guns to Aslam Khan.  Whoever could go, they went.  They came to fight the war for the Deen.  Many gathered under the flag.  They yelled: “Ali, Ali,” as they joined.  Many flags and Nishans were hoisted.  Half of the population gathered.  The Singhs were like salt in the flour.  The Singhs had no where to hid.  The Turks were like a cyclone and the Singhs were like small twisters.  The Singhs didn’t fight.  They couldn’t fight so many.  They tried to avoid the fight.  It was a hard time for the Singhs.  They wanted to go to a dense jungle.  The Singhs quickly went to Gurdaspur and hid in the jungles to pass the time.  They came to Kanoovaal di Chamb and ate meat and fish to survive.

Where the Khuddah people went, they attacked the Hindus as well.  They slaughtered the cows and the Brahmins.  They committed crimes upon the daughters of the Hindus.  They raped them and didn’t stop.  They bothered the people of Majha.  The Jihandist said: “they sent their sons to the Singhs.  Those Singhs looted us and they ate, sitting in their homes.”  They terrorized the Hindus in this way.

The Singhs heard of the terrorizing of the people of Majha.  They said: “our life is damned if our parents are in pain.”  The Singhs took their arrows out and fought the Turks nearby.  The Singhs attacked the Turks at night.  They didn’t let the Turks travel anywhere.  The Singhs attacked in guerilla warfare.  As the Turks killed the Singhs, the Singhs killed them.  The Turks thought about their plan.  They couldn’t enter Lahore.  The Singhs didn’t let anyone go back.  The Singhs blocked their way back.  The Singhs attacked in and around Lahore.  The Turks were killed by the Singhs.  The Turks would attack but the Singhs would hide in the jungles.  The Singhs would go.  If the Turks followed, the Singhs killed them as they knew the jungles.  The Singhs never got tired.  They ate and slept on their horses.  They were ready to fight any time.  The Turks were lazy.  They wanted to sleep at night and take naps during the day.  The Singhs made the Turks tired, day and night.  The Turks died every day.  The Singhs killed them everyday.  The Singhs would go into the jungles as the Turks attacked.  The thorns would pierce the feet of the Turks or cut their bodies.  They would be in pain and come out of the jungle, thinking of their mothers.

Part 3 Bhagwanta Khatri Attacks the Singhs in the Haveli

The Singhs divided themselves into 4 groups.  One group stayed in Majha and one was in the Pahari area.  The third was sent to Lahore.  The Fourth was to always follow the Jihadis.  Each group had 200 Singhs.  One or two Singhs would join the groups along the way.  If one group was stuck, the others would come to help them.  They knew where the other groups were.  Such was their condition.

One time, one group was surrounded by the Jihadis.  Bhagwant Khatri was a person who lived in the Bharat village near the Ravi.  He had a Haveli there.  One group of Singhs came to the Khatri’s Haveli.  It was raining and the Haveli was empty at that time.  The Singhs spent the night there.  I don’t know why they went there but they were there.  The 1,000 soldiers from Delhi found out about the Singhs in the Haveli.  The mounted soldiers from Delhi quickly came and surrounded the Singhs.  Another 1,000 came to help the Turks.  The Singhs were surrounded.  The Singhs that were outside of the Haveli, they were killed.  The Haveli was surrounded.  The walls were fragile.  The Turks set their canons upon the fragile walls of the Haveli.  The Singhs were upset.  The Singhs had nothing with them as they were only going to spend the night.  The food was finished.  The Singhs were helpless.  Without food and money, they were as good as dead.  They couldn’t inform their brothers either.  The Panth couldn’t come to help.  They were low in numbers and they needed to save themselves.  The Singhs were tired.  The Turks saw this.  They surrounded the walls and were going to climb them with ladders.  There was no moat around the Haveli.  The walls were lower.  This was bad for the Singhs.  The Turks came up the walls but the Singhs would cut their arms and kill them.  Many other Turks came.  As they came, they fought.  They set up their canons from the outside.  They killed and yelled: “hai, hai!”  The Turks yelled: “now we have you!  We won’t let you go now!”  The Singhs said: “we won’t die alone.  We will kill you along with us.”  The Satguru blessed them in this way: a great rain storm came, all of a sudden.  The canons and rifles could not fire as they got wet.  The Singhs grabbed their swords, shields and arrows.  The Singhs attacked.  They were ready to die anyways.  They weren’t afraid.  They struck their swords and cut the Turks.  The Turks showed their backs and ran away to their own Dheras.  The Singhs got time.  They left the Haveli and went to the Jungles.  They were masters of the Jungles.  The Turks said: “we won!”  The Singhs said: “we saved ourselves.”  The Turks came back to Lahore.  They thought they won but weren’t able to kill the Singhs.  The Singhs said: “let’s go and pass our time.  The Turks are proud of their win.”  The Turks said: “we made the Khalsa Panth run away.  The Khalsa that killed our Turks, we have killed many of their warriors.”  The came to Bheeloval (a village near Lahore) and set up their Dhera.  They saw a nice place and set up their Dhera.  There was an empty Qila there.  The 1,000 Pathaans from Delhi set up their Dhera in the Qila.  The Bivaastas (Jihadis) set their Dhera on one side.  They saw a nice place and said: “we will find an auspicious time to go to Lahore.”  The called a Maulana to tell them when to go into Lahore and show off their victory.

Part 4 The Singhs Attack

The Turks didn’t go to Lahore and waited for a good day.  How would they go?  This was to be the site of their graves.  Their Karma brought them there.  Look where their destiny took them.  The destiny does what it wishes to do.  What the destiny wishes, is what happens.  The Khalsa was to receive the victory.  The Singhs came out of the jungle and were upset.  They didn’t like that the Turks left without being killed.  It was like a cheetah not getting its prey.  Listen to how the Singhs fought bravely.  The Singhs regretted the time.  It rained.  They said: “it rained then and we were to kill them.  Satguru ji gave us the perfect opportunity, signalling our victory.  We could have killed them as nature showed us the victory.  The canons couldn’t fire.  We could have killed them.  We are Singh warriors.  It was upon our heads.  We don’t back down.”  They thought about the missed opportunity.  More Singhs joined them.  The Khalsa’s play was as such: if 10 died, 20 more joined them.  The Satguru blessed them.  The other Singhs heard the guns firing and came to the group in the jungle.  1,000 Singhs gathered in the jungle.  The Singhs were given initiative.  One Singh came and said: “the Turks haven’t gone to Lahore yet.  They are saying that the Singhs lost from us.  They want to attack us again.”  The Khalsa got angry at this.  It was like the momentum on the rifle to fire.  The Singhs said: “get ready!  Kill or be killed!”  The Singhs got ready.  They didn’t have any horses nor did they have luggage.  They thought of Guru Gobind Singh ji and got ready to leave.  The Singhs ran like horses.  They ran like the wind.  They didn’t need horses.  They ran over high and low elevations, where horses couldn’t travel, via narrow passages in the jungle.  They travelled through the jungles and came to Bheelowal.  They saw the Turks.

Listen to the Turks.  They wanted to go to Lahore.  They played Dhols and Nagaras.  They fired their rifles and canons.  They stayed in Bheelowal and calculated a good day within 2 days, checking astrology.  The soldiers loved the place near the Ravi.  Death brought them there.  They couldn’t go to Lahore.  The Singhs attacked like a hawk from the sky, all of a sudden.  The Singhs ran inside the Dhera.  The Turks couldn’t run away.  Some were gone hunting and some went to the village.  Some were taking a bath.  Some were reading the Nivaaj, bending and rising.  The canons were empty.  The camels and bulls were grazing.  There were a few horses tied up and saddled.  The Singhs took the horses and mounted them saying: “Guru ji sent us horses!”  The Singhs took the Turks’ rifles and horses.  They fought them in this way.  They began killing the Turks.  They killed the Turks.  The Jihadis wanted to fight for the Deen.  They got caught.  The Singhs fought in this way.  The Pathaans that came from Delhi came to help the Jihadis.  The Khalsa cut them, whoever came into the field.  The Rajput from Travari saw this and noticed he was in trouble.  He came to a high place and said: “go to the villages.”  Some Turks were saved.  The ones that stayed outside they died.  The Singhs killed and looted the Turks from Delhi.  Only the ones who went to the village were saved.  Murtaza Khan Saudagar was killed.  The grandson of Raja Todar Mal was killed.  Hazi Babar Mal was killed.  The Peers were killed.  Peer Mohammed Inayat Khan was killed.  Mirza Naki was saved though.  They were all Bivaastas.  They came to kill the Singhs but got killed themselves.  The Singhs killed the Turks and yelled: “Akaal Akaal!”  They beat and looted the Dhera of the Turks.  They took everything.  The Singhs roamed the middle of Punjab like a fearless lion.  In this way, the Singhs killed the army.  One Singh looked like a thousand.  As many Singhs were killed the night before, the Singhs grew 4 times more the next day.  When the Turks would die, they would decrease in numbers, running away.  It was like illness among the cows.  The Turks set up more armies but the Singhs already did what they wanted to do.

Part 5 Kapoor Singh Receives the Navaabi

When the Bivaastas were killed, the Khalsa was really happy.  The Turks were scared as they got killed and lost.  The Bivaastas that came to fight, they ran away to save themselves.  The ones that fought, died.  The Turks ran away but couldn’t face the Singhs.  The Turks’ homes were filled with cries.  The Singhs’ homes shouted Jaikaras.  Such was the blessing of the Satguru.  A few Khalsa killed a huge army.

Aslam Khan thought of two things: “I am happy that the ones who asked for pay all died, but I regret that they were from my Deen.”  Aslam Khan was very political.  He saw his benefit as he wasn’t able to pay the tax to Delhi.  He thought to himself: “I was going to be arrested and taken to Delhi if this battle didn’t happen.  It’s good that they were all killed.  It’s good that the Singhs came at the right time.  The Delhi army was going to take the tax back from me.  I have an excuse now not to pay tax.  I will tell Delhi that the enemy is strong who loots me.  The Banda died but the enemy is still here.  The enemy is now 4 times bigger than the Banda.”  He wrote this and sent it to Delhi.  He wrote: “the royal army has been killed.”  He didn’t say anything about the Bivaastas though.  He fudged the facts and wrote to Delhi.  He used politics for his advantage.  He began meeting with the Singhs.  Aslam Khan and Zakriya Khan wrote confusing letters to Delhi: “this enemy is really bad.  We need to find a solution for this.  We should please them and keep them calm.  If the enemy dies with gurrh, why bother with poison?  The wise people say: giving a piece of food to dogs, it doesn’t bite you then.  If you command us, we can cheat them.  We can kill them if they begin to trust us.  We can give them a Siropa if you command us.  I can butter them up and convince them.”  He wrote this to Delhi to avoid paying his taxes.  He called Bhai Subegh Singh ji to him.  Bhai Subegh Singh ji Jambher was very well educated.  He was a noble of the city.  The Suba said to him: “go to the Khalsa and have them call a truce with me.  It is good that they killed the army from Delhi.  You took the lice out of my hair.  Go and tell the Singhs this.  They are my brothers and I am their brother.  We all believe in Guru Nanak Dev ji.  Give me joy and I will give you joy.  We will run the country together.  Let’s make it progress.  I will write a Jageer for Guru Chak (Amritsar).  Don’t ruin the country now.  This is your land and we are your younger brothers.  Who gives brothers pain?  You should live with joy.”  Bhai Subegh Singh ji said to him: “I will go to the Khalsa but I can’t go empty-handed.  You need to send gifts to the Panth.  Only then will the love grow.”  The Navaab agreed to this.  He saw his benefit and sent Siropas to the Panth.  It was a very expensive Chola which represented the Subedari.  The Navaab said and wrote: “this is not just a Chola.  It is the Navaabi of Punjab.  We will be equals in Punjab.”  He wrote a Jageer for 125,000 a year.  They were to get a share of the taxes.  He said: “this is half of the Subedari.  You will be the master of the public.  Royal Parwanas will come from Delhi to discuss royal decisions.  The Navaab will distribute the money.  Among you, who is a warrior, chaste, generous, Tappi, and Jappi; give him the Navaabi who is deserving.”  Money was sent as well.

Bhai Subegh Singh ji left with strategy from Lahore.  He came to Amritsar where the Panth’s Dhera was.  The Khalsa was there, playing Nagaras and Nishans flying.  The wise Singh came there.  The Khalsa Divaan was in session at Sri Akaal Takhat Sahib.  The Shabads were being sung with Rababs.  The Sukha was grinded and Maha Prashaad (meat) was being grilled.  Some were massaging the horses.  Some were cleaning their weapons, making it white.  Some were firing arrows and some were firing their rifles.  Some were spinning the Chakkars on their fingers.  Some were massaging other Singhs.  Some were waving the Chaur.  Some were bringing water from afar for the bathing of the Singhs.  Some Singhs were standing and doing the Daattan (meshwak).  Some Singhs were ringing their Kacheras after washing them.  Nobody was jealous of each other.  The Singhs ran and did Seva.  Bhai Subegh Singh ji saw this and got off his horse out of respect.  Singhs would get off their horse once they would see the Nishaan.  Bhai Subegh Singh ji bowed to the Nishaan.  He said the Fateh of Vahiguru and yelled Akaal.  The Khalsa heard this and put their hands upon their heads.  The Tatt Khalsa followed the tradition.  They first did the Ardaas of Bhai Subegh Singh ji for coming back to the Panth.  As he bowed, the Khalsa saw him and was happy.  The Khalsa said: “you are great.  Welcome.”  Bhai Subegh Singh ji stood near the shoes and said: “give me Tankhaa and forgive me.  Do the Ardaas.  The Khalsa is forgiving.  I am a householder who takes pay from the Turk Sarkar.  Please forgive me.”  The Khalsa was impressed and forgave him, giving him his Tankhaa.  The 5 Bhujhangis did the Ardaas for forgiveness.  Bhai Subegh Singh ji was then allowed to sit with the Panth.  They respected him.  Bhai Subegh Singh ji placed the money and gifts.  Some said: “let’s loot this!”  Some said: “we won’t take this.  Take it away.”  Bhai Subegh Singh ji said: “what are you all saying?  Think about it first.”  He folded his hands and said: “protect the poor by taking from the Turks.  Don’t stop the money from coming.  We have half of the rule of Punjab.  The poor will support us.”  The Khalsa accepted the offer.  They wanted the Empire but Bhai Subegh Singh ji said: “the Turks sent this rule.  Don’t reject it.  Eat it and use it.  We will take the full kingdom.”  The money was distributed among the Khalsa.  They said: “Bhai Darbara Singh ji, take the Navaabi as you are the Jathedaar.”  Baba Darbara Singh ji said: “why should I take the Navaabi?  Satguru ji gave us the empire.  I think it is near.  We are deserving of empires.  We will get it here or in the next world.  The Guru said to the Sikhs that we will be emperors.  Dhroo may move or the bull holding the earth may move but the Satguru’s words are never empty.  How can we leave the Empire and take the Navaabi?  We will depend upon the Turks.  The Satguru gave us the Empire.  We will rule the whole world.  We will have Takhats everywhere.”  The other Sikhs said the same thing.  They said: “we don’t want the Navaabi.  We will take the empire.  If we leave the wish for the empire, then we won’t get it.  The Panth and the Turks are like fire and gunpowder.  Give it to another Singh.  Find somebody who is doing Seva.”  Bhai Kapoor Singh ji was doing Seva.  He had a fresh wound on his face from a battle.  He was from Faisalabad of the Virk clan.  At the age of 6, Guru Gobind Singh ji held him in his lap and said: “he is my Navaab.”  That boon came to fulfillment.  Bhai Kapoor Singh ji was around 25 years old then.  It was really hot and he was running and fanning the Sangat with a fan.  He had recently fought a few Turks on his own.  He took a few scars from a sword on his face and body.  The scars were still bleeding slightly.  The wounds illuminated on his face like the sign of the Mrigshala on the moon.  It was a symbol of great valour.  The wounds were only a day or two old.  The Singhs saw his wounds and said: “he is blessed!”  He was tall and wide, doing Seva.  The Khalsa remembered the words of Guru ji, giving the young man the boon of Navaabi.  The whole Panth saw him.  There was a Singh reciting Gurbani, sitting at Akaal Takhat Sahib: “taihal maihal ta ko milay ja ko saadh kripaal – Seva and mansions are given to those, upon whom the sadhoos are compassionate with. – Bhavan Akhri.”  Bhai Kapoor Singh ji was fanning the Sangat.  The Panth’s blessed sight fell upon Bhai Kapoor Singh ji.  They heard the Gurbani recited at Akaal Takhat and understood Guru ji’s wish.  They said: “these are the words of Guru Granth Sahib ji.  Obey it.  He is doing Seva.  Take him to the mansions.  Give Kapoor Singh the Siropa of Navaabi.”  The Panth said to Bhai Kapoor Singh ji: “take it oh Singh Bhujhangi!”  Bhai Kapoor Singh ji folded his hands and said: “touch this by the feet of 5 Bhujhangis.  Put it on my head after it is made pure.  By the power of 5 Singhs, rabbits turn to lions; a rye can become a mountain; the sparrow can break the hawk.  Whom the Khalsa empowers, they become strong.”  The Khalsa was happy with this.  They did as Bhai Kapoor Singh ji asked and gave him the Navaabi.

Part 6 Navaab Kapoor Singh Makes 5 Jathas of the Khalsa

Bhai Kapoor Singh ji became the Navaab.  The radiance of the Singhs grew a lot.  People found out that the Khalsa gained half of the rule of Punjab.  The Turks served them as well, sending taxes to them.  Aslam Khan got his work done by the excuse of the Panth.  He saved money and kept most of the taxes.  He used the excuse of the Panth for not sending money to Delhi.  He threatened Delhi that the Singhs may rebel again.  He said: “the Panth is like a bad ghost.”  The Jageer of 12 villages was allotted to Sri Guru Chak Amritsar.  The taxes were used for Langar.  Aslam Khan would say to Delhi: “I have kept the Singhs busy, otherwise they were difficult to deal with.  They ask for taxes a month ahead.  If I pay them, then they won’t bother me.  Otherwise they will rebel and not pay taxes.  Give me some exceptions.  Our love is like fire and gunpowder.  If I get a chance, I will kill them too, just like I destroyed the Banda’s campaign.  I gave them the Navaabi to deceive them.  I will arrest the new Navaab and bring him to Delhi in a few years.”  The Shah said: “do what is good for you.  I gave you the charge of Punjab.  Who is wiser than you?”

Listen to about the Singhs, listen oh saints and Gurmukhs, my brothers.  The Dhera of the Panth was at Guru Chak Amritsar.  The Khalsa grew by the day.  Money from Lahore came everyday.  The point of Aslam Khan was to make the Singhs lazy and enjoy life at home.  He wanted the Singhs to stop practicing their marital ways but this backfired.  The Singhs increased their practices.  Navaab Kapoor Singh ji gave pay to all of the Singhs.  The Divaans were held at Sri Akaal Bunga Sahib.  They bathed at Amritsar in the morning.  The Panth blessed Bhai Kapoor Singh ji.  He became wiser when the whole Panth set its blessed vision upon him.  He had already been blessed by Guru Gobind Singh ji as a baby.  Bhai Kapoor Singh ji respected the Khalsa a lot.  He didn’t do anything without consulting the Panth.  He did double the Seva as before, picking up the dung of the horses; fanning the Sangat.  He became humbler.  As he did more Seva of the Panth, he received more Gurmat.  As the money came from the royal treasury, it was kept with Jathedaar Darbara Singh ji, the Divaan.  Divaan Darbara Singh ji would do the Ardaas and distribute it among the Khalsa.  This was done everyday.  There was a Langri named Bhai Hari Singh ji (Bhangi).  He had the sign of a Padam in his hand.  The Langar he made, never finished.  Bhai Jassa Singh ji (Ahluwalia) would distribute the grains to the horses.  He was a child then.  His father died at a young age and so Baba Jassa Singh ji stayed with Mata Sundri ji in Delhi.  He was given the Gurj of Guru Hargobind Sahib ji.  He was educated in the Madrassas of Delhi under Mata Sundri ji’s care.  Mata ji gave the Santhya of Aad, Dasam and Sarblo Guru Granth Sahib ji to Bhai Jassa Singh ji.  She taught him Sangeet Vidya, the traditional reets sung by Guru Arjan Dev ji.  Bhai Jassa Singh ji was from the Kalaal (distillers) caste from Ahloovaal.  His father died in battle when Bhai Jassa Singh ji was very young.  Bhai Jassa Singh ji spoke more Hindi as he stayed in Delhi for his education.  The Majha Singhs teased him by calling him “Hamki Tumki,” the Hindi words.  Tired of the teasing, he complained to Navaab Kapoor Singh ji: “hamko dana baantay nahi – I can’t distribute the grains.  They call me: hamki tumki.”  Navaab Kapoor Singh ji responded: “I picked up the dung of the horses and was given the Navaabi.  You give them food and therefore you shall by the Sultan of the Kaum.”

Everyone got clothes from one place.  Only one person gave all of the money and the food.  All of the money was kept in one place.  The income was together.  Nobody kept personal money hidden.  Whatever they earned, they gave to Baba Darbara Singh ji and took what they needed when they needed it.  The canons that the Panth acquired, along with the swivel guns, they were really heavy.  The Singhs would pick them upon their shoulders.  The gunners that took care of the canons, Navaab Kapoor Singh ji allotted them 1 Ser of ghee each, per day.  From Jheeta Village, Bhai Gurbaksh Singh ji Hundal, he was given the command of all the gunners and the arsenal.  He was the high command that watched the gunroom.

If a Singh stayed outside of the Panth for a night, or went home without taking permission; he would have to come to the Panth and have an Ardaas done.  He would receive a Tankhaa and then be allowed to sit with the Panth again.  If someone went home on holidays, he would come and stand in front of the Panth himself.  If a Singh earned or looted money from outside, they would put it in the treasury in one place.  For some time, the Singhs enjoyed a time of peace.  Some Singhs went home to meet their families.  Some Singhs made Bungas in their villages.  Some made Dharamsalas in their villages.  Some helped their villages farm.  Some were kept by their families.  Some mothers didn’t let the Singhs come back.  Some Singhs brought more people to become Singhs.  The Panth grew in this way.  It was too much to handle in one place.  Navaab Kapoor Singh ji thought to himself: “we need a way to take care of everyone.”  That same day, the Khalsa was called at Sri Akaal Bunga.  Navaab Kapoor Singh ji consulted with Bhai Mani Singh ji, the Pujari of the Darbar.  Bhai Mani Singh ji sat in the middle of the Panth.  The Trehan (Baba Binod Singh ji) and Bhalla (Baba Kaan Singh ji) Bawas were called.  Baba Binod Singh ji and Baba Kaan Singh ji were called.  If I write all of the names (Baba Deep Singh ji, Bhai Mani Singh ji, Baba Darbara Singh ji, Bhai Hari Singh ji Bhangi etc.) the Granth will get too big and would never finish.  Navaab Kapoor Singh ji said to all: “this thought came to my mind: the Khalsa used to travel from village to village before.  They used to earn for their own living then.  Now, the Langar is too much for making in one place.  There are about 70,000 of us now.  We need to come up with a plan.  We need to make Jathas within the Panth.  Everyone will get their allowances from the treasury.”  The Khalsa accepted this.  Everyone liked this idea.  Five Dheras were established and five Nishans were made for each Jatha.  They were brought to the Akaal Bhoonga.  The first Nishan was given to the Shaheeda Misl, Nihangs.  Baba Deep Singh ji and Baba Karam Singh ji were the leaders of the Shaheeda Mils who were ready to give their heads at any time.  The second Nishan was given to Baba Karam Singh ji and Bhai Dharam Singh ji Amritsariyay.  They were both Khatris.  The third Nishan was given to Baba Binod Singh ji and Baba Kaan Singh ji, the great descendants of the Satgurus.  They were the Trehan and Bhalla Bawas.  Baba Dasaunda Singh ji was given the fourth Nishan.  He was a Gill Jatt from Bhudda Kot (later Nishana Vali Misl who ruled Ambala).  The fifth Nishan was given to Baba Bir Singh ji Rangreta (the one who offered his head for Guru Gobind Singh ji to fire the rifle upon while being in the company of Bhai Dalla Singh ji).  They had 1300 horses at that time, despite being from lower castes.  Such was the division done of the Jathas.  How I, Rattan Singh, heard it, I have written it.  If someone asks about Navaab Kapoor Singh ji’s caste, village and surname: listen now.  There was a Mughal named Farzula Khan who established a village named Farzulay.  The younger sister of the Soobadaar of Lahore, whose name was Khano, she was married to Farzula Khan.  She hated the Singhs.  She was corrupt.  She had many Singhs killed.  1500 Singhs that worked for the Sarkaar, she had them killed by reposting them in dangerous areas.  Bhai Kapoor Singh ji lived in Farzula Village.  He was a Virk Jatt.  His father was Baba Daleep Singh ji.  Baba Kapoor Singh ji left his home on a good day.  Baba Kapoor Singh ji and his father did a lot of Seva of the Singhs.  By this Seva, he received his status of Navaab.  He was the Navaab of the whole Panth.  He did the Seva which did not go unrecognized.  The Khalsa is Khuddah itself.

One day, when he was a young adult, Navaab Kapoor Singh ji thought in joy.  He was young and was inspired by the great victories of the other Singhs.  He took about 20 Singhs and went hunting.  They were mounted on horses.  They came to Lahore as they hunted.  They saw a Kotvaal Chabutra (police station) and sat there.  He commanded the whole city from there for about 6 hours.  Nobody knew that they were in fact, rebels.  They were all loaded with weapons.  Someone reported and complained about them.  Khijjar Khan was then sent with soldiers to see who had taken over the Kotvaal.  The Navaab said: “go and see who it is.”  When Bhai Kapoor Singh ji found out, he and his friends jumped on their horses and left, playing the Nagaras.  The Turks couldn’t catch them.  He was about 20 years old at that time.  The Singhs hid in the jungle.  It was an embarrassing act for the whole city that the Singhs took over the Kotvaal for some hours.

Some days passed.  There were battles going on all the time.  They lived on their horses.  If Aslam Khan would delay the income, the Singhs would go to loot the royal treasury.

Part 7 Sakhi of Jassa Singh

I will now tell you about the Sakhi of Bhai Jassa Singh.  He was from a very poor family, who would beg for food.  When Baba Jassa Singh ji joined the Khalsa, he became the Panth Paatshaah, the king of the Panth.  He was known as Ahluwalia and was from the Kalaal (distillers) caste.  Their village was between Lahore and Kasur.  There was a poor Kalaal there who was a Singh of the Guru.  He was a beloved of Guru Gobind Singh ji.  His name was Baba Dyaal Singh ji and did work as per his caste.  He died, leaving his wife and son behind.  He loved his wife a lot who was also a daughter of a Sikh.  She recited a lot of Bani and had a lot of Bani memorized.  She was a Sikhni from her parents and her in-laws.  She kept a Pothi in her Gatra, all the time.  She came to the Sikh Sangat at Amritvela.  She sang Keertan.  In the evening, she did So Dar and Aarti.  She did Keertan with a Dutaara and kept her son along.  She did Keertan twice a day.  Where the Sangat gathered, she was invited to do Keertan there.  Day and night she travelled to Satsang.  She did Shabad Chownkis.  She went to every Sikh Mela.  She did not turn her back from the Guru’s tasks, ever.  Where the Khalsa held Divaan, she went and sang Shabad Chownkis there.

She heard that the Khalsa came to Amritsar.  She wanted to do the Darshan of the Khalsa.  She did the Shabad Chownki with love.  The Panth was happy to hear her Keertan.  The Panth was calm, hearing her Keertan.  She was blessed by the Panth as she came at a good time.  Bhai Kapoor Singh ji called her son.  He gave him Amrit and made him into a Singh.  His mother was overjoyed and gave him to Navaab Kapoor Singh ji for training and Seva.  Bhai Kapoor Singh ji held his arm and took him in under his wing.  He was fortunate to be taken in under the training of Bhai Kapoor Singh ji.  He was sent to Mata Sundri ji for higher education in Delhi.  He then came back to Amritsar.  Bhai Kapoor Singh ji was compassionate upon him.  He gave Bhai Jassa Singh ji the duty to feed the horses.  He did this Seva for many days.  The people would make the boy cry, quite often.  The Singhs made fun of his language as he spoke more Hindi.  He cried and came to Navaab Kapoor Singh ji and said: “I can’t give the grains.  The Singhs argue with me.  The Singhs ask me to give more.”  Navaab ji was happy and called Bhai Jassa Singh ji.  He put his hand on the boy’s head and spoke to him with love: “you will feed thousands of horses of the Khalsa.  I was given the Navaabi for cleaning the dung of the horses.  You will be the Paatshaah.”  The boy was blessed and that sudden time.  He was called the Shah, Jassa Singh Kalaal.  He sat on the Delhi Takhat and ruled for some time in his life.  I, Rattan Singh, have written this Sakhi while sitting with the wise ones.  Forgive my mistakes and see the intention of my Seva.

Part 8 Samundh Khan seated upon Aslam Khan’s seat

After giving the Navaabi to the Sikhs, Sooba Aslam Khan died after a few months.  Samundh Khan was the next Sooba.  Samundh Khan’s Rabab (his rule) sounded everywhere.  He was a corrupt person.  He was a bad person.  He was egotistical.  He stopped the income of the Sikhs from the treasury.  He wrote to Navaab Kapoor Singh ji and offered him to join the royal army on pay.  He wanted to send the Singhs to war to their death.  When the Khalsa found out that the income was stopped, they said: “this land is ours.  The Khalsa gave you some time to rule.  We are the owners.  You will be our servants, not us.”  The Tarna Dal was given the command to loot the royal treasuries.  The Panth began to loot as they did before.  The army of the Turks came to fight the Khalsa.  The Singhs hid in the jungles and fought.

Part 9 Raja Ala Singh Phool Vanshi takes Amrit

When the Panth was in constant battle, Nadir Shah came.  Nadir Shah was a shepherd’s son in Iran.  A Fakir saw him and said: “he will be a great Shah one day.”  When Nadir was 15, he and his friends began to loot the royal treasuries.  He gathered 20,000 people and took over Iran and then Afghanistan.  He then attacked Hindustan.  This was who Guru Gobind Singh ji referred to as the “Dog from Kabul,” who would kill the Mughals.  The Singhs let Nadir Shah do what he wanted to.  Nadir looted Delhi and took all of the women of the Mughal Royal house and married them into his own family.  He took the diamonds and riches.  Nadir killed 70,000 people in Delhi in one day.  He then left Delhi.  The Khalsa was in the jungles at that time.  The Singhs would rescue the women Nadir was taking back using guerilla war tactics.  The Singhs rescued 22,000 women and girls along with a lot of treasures.

The Singhs were in different places.  Navaab Kapoor Singh ji Bhujhangi came to Malva to the Brars.  They spent some time there.  The Brars wanted the Navaab to leave later.  They made him leave.  From Theekri, there was a Singh living there who was a good person.  He took the Navaab and the Khalsa to his village.  The Navaab stayed there for some day.  There were about 2,000 Singhs with him.  Some Singhs went back to Majha.  They looted the royal treasuries on the way.  If someone had more money, they shared and ate with other Singhs.  The Khalsa went through hard times.  Sometimes they were hungry for days.  Without looting and eating, they couldn’t get by.  Bhai Gauhar Singh ji heard of the Singhs being in Malva.  He was from the family of Buddha Singh ji.  He made a lot of Langar and satiated the Singhs.  He was a rich Chaudhary.  He gave the Singhs a lot of grains.  When he served the Panth, the Panth destroyed his enemies.  The Panth scolded the Maler Kotla and the Rai Kot Pathaans.  Bhai Gurbaksh Singh ji (from the family of Mai Bhikha, Bhai Bhagtoo ji) came and gave a lot of food to the Panth.  The Panth helped him become the king of Kaithal.  He joined the Khalsa to take over Bangar and the neighbouring areas.  Baba Ala Singh ji Brar then came and brought a lot of Langar.  Baba Kala, the Chacha of Phool and Sandhli, brought Phool and Sandhli to Guru Har Rai Sahib ji.  Guru ji blessed the children with kingdoms.  Baba Phool’s sons, Ram Singh and Trilok Singh took Amrit.  Bhai Ram Singh ji’s son was Baba Ala Singh.  He brought a lot of food for the Khalsa.  He brought his whole family, Sukhchain Singh, Gurdit Singh, the other Rajas of Jind and other areas.  They all took the Khanda Pahul Amrit from Baba Kapoor Singh ji Navaab.  Baba Ala Singh ji joined the Panth.  They had the 12th Misl of the Khalsa.  Baba Ala Singh ji got the free help of the Khalsa to win the area.  He had all of his problems solved by the Khalsa and took over Barnala and Patiala.  The Bhai ke (Bhagtoo ji’s descendants) took over Rohi and named it Gaurjiana.  Bhai Gurbaksh Singh ji took over Kaithal and Jind.  Baba Ala Singh ji took over a lot of land.  His cousins were given land to rule by the help of the Khalsa.  His kingdom was really big.  He took over Sunaam and Sangrur.

Part 10 The Khalsa Loots Sirhind

Listen to how the Khalsa looted Sirhind for the first time.  Baba Banda Singh ji did not ruin Sirhind as Guru ji commanded him to.  The Singhs were to complete Guru ji’s command.  The Singhs had no money.  They saw Sirhind and headed that way.  They wanted to loot Sirhind and then go to Amritsar.  Navaab Kapoor Singh ji decided to go.  The whole Khalsa wanted to go to Amritsar to bathe in the Sarovar.  The Navaab said: “let’s loot a city along the way.  We will need money.”  Bhai Laabh Singh ji said: “let’s loot and destroy the bloody city where the Sahibzadas were killed.  Guru ji said that the ploughs are to run in that city.”  Some said: “let’s go right now!  We have a chance now.”  Some said: “our army is less, compared to the Sooba of Sirhind.”  The Navaab, Kapoor Singh ji said: “don’t look at anything.  We will kill or be killed.  If we die, we will be Shaheeds.  Whoever puts their heads to the Sahibzada’s feet, they will have all of their wishes fulfilled.  We will win both worlds there.  If we die, we will be Mukat.  If we win, we will get kingdoms.  By the Satguru’s command, we will win with a few Singhs.  The donkeys will plough the fields of Sirhind.”  When the Singhs heard the Navaab, they got open permissions to loot.  They attacked in the morning and looted the whole city of Sirhind.  5,000 Singhs came to Sirhind.  They attacked all 5 gates of the city.  They killed the Turks they found.  They looted the gold and jewellery of the Hindus but didn’t kill them.  They took gold and silver.  They took everything.  They looted till noon.  It was like a hungry person eating sweets.  They looted what they could take.  They took the horses.  The Singhs then left before someone else could be notified.  They picked up money.  The Singhs came back to Theekri in Malva.  They gathered more horses.  Some people of Malva gave more money.  The Khalsa had money.  They were good to go to Amritsar now.

The Panth was ready for the Mela in Amritsar.  They weren’t afraid to die.  They didn’t care of win or loss.  When the Malva Singhs found out, they congratulated the Singhs and gave them horses.  Baba Ala Singh ji gave many horses.  He folded his hands to the Panth.  The Panth was on good terms with Ala Singh ji.  He said: “please come back here after Diwali.  If the Turks bother us, please help us.  Keep an eye on us.  The Sirhind Sooba may attack us.  Please come if they attack.”  Baba Kapoor Singh ji said: “don’t worry.  We will come to help you.  Send us a messenger and the Khalsa will come.”  The Khalsa headed to Amritsar.  Guru ji completed the tasks of the Panth.

The Panth crossed 2 rivers and came to Sri Amritsar.  When the Singhs came to Amritsar, they saw the bad state of Amritsar.  The Turks killed cows and threw them into the Sarovar.  The Boongas were destroyed.  Bones, dung and soil were put into the Sarovar.  They prepared fields to plough.  The Khalsa came back and cleaned the Sarovar before the Mela.  They cleaned the Sarovar.  They came to host the Mela.  Everyone came and set up their tents.  They sat at Akaal Boonga and had a discussion.  We will stay here and loot the Turks.”  The Turks were looted and the Singhs grew in numbers.  The water was filled and the Mela was celebrated.  The army of the Turks came to attack the Singhs.  The Singhs left Amritsar and went to the jungles again.
