1-46 Khan Khana in Peace/ Meeting the Shah
Satguru ji was in a beautiful garden, where he had the camp set up. After spending the night there, he got ready in the morning to leave. He mounted his horse and departed for Agra. There were big gardens in Agra, where Guru ji stopped and got off his horse. The horse was tied up there. The other horses were tied up there. Guru ji rested there on his bed. There was a Pathan named Khan Khana. This was not the Khan Khana who was Akbar’s brother. This one lived in Agra and knew of the greatness of the Guru. He heard of Guru ji’s arrival in Agra and sent some of his people to welcome Guru ji. The people came to Satguru ji and said: “Khan Khana folds his hands and wishes for you to give him your Darshan. Come with your whole Dhera. Let’s go Prabhoo! His place is very peaceful. Come there and rest. He sends his request in this way.” Sri Guru ji heard this and mounted his horse. His Singhs that carried weapons all came with Guru ji. The Badshah’s army was also in Agra. Guru ji saw a huge garden in the city. Guru ji entered the garden of Khan Khana. When Khan Khana heard of Guru ji’s arrival, he quickly came to greet Guru ji. He bowed to Guru ji’s feet with respect. He bowed and said: “you saw me as one of your own and gave me your Darshan. You were compassionate and blessed me.” Guru ji patted him on the back with his own hand. Guru ji gave him a lot of joy. Khan Khana folded his hands and said: “my body remains in pain. I have faith that the pain will go away by your blessing. I have been waiting for you for a long time with great focus.” Guru ji said: “the pains won’t stay now. After meeting me, the pain is to come to an end. Give food to the hungry everyday. Put 1 Dinar hidden in the food. You will be well-known in the world if you do this. Your great story will be known. Everyone will praise your name: Saadh Saadh Saadhoo Khan Khana, tere khany bikhay Bhutana – Your place will be filled with gold coins.” The words of the Guru are still known in Agra about Khan Khana. The good people are praised till the world remains. Khan Khana’s pain was gone. He was blessed. He respected Prabhoo ji a lot. He had Guru ji stay in his home. He did a lot of Seva of Guru ji by which Guru ji was really happy. Guru ji left him and then went to another place to set up a Dhera. Food was brought. The Singhs and Guru ji ate and rested the night.
The clouds came and it rained a lot at night. The wind blew hard. Inder sent the rain, marking the arrival of Satguru ji. He washed the city of Agra with rain to welcome the Guru. The sun came out in the morning. The beautiful trees were green. There were nice homes in the garden. Guru ji set up the Dhera there and came there with the Singhs. Many Singhs were with him. Guru ji commanded everyone where to set up camp. Everyone was set up there. The places were divided for everyone. The Khalsa set up camp in joy. For one or two days they all rested. Many Sikhs in Agra came to do Guru ji’s Darshan. Bahadhur Shah was notified of Guru ji’s arrival: “Guru ji has come to us.” As soon as he heard this, he was very happy. He sent his Umraav. The Umraav came to Guru ji and bowed to his feet after placing some gifts. He said: “the Shah has sent me as soon as he heard you have arrived. He wishes for your Darshan. He wishes to meet you. That is his repeated request.” The Singhs were commanded: “saddle your horses and get ready.” The Singhs wielded their weapons and rode their horse to Guru ji. Guru ji wore an expensive Jamma with beautiful jewellery. His Kalgi worth Lakhs was radiant on his Dumaalaa along with the Jigha. He had a sword in his Gatra with a golden hilt and jewels embedded into it. He tied a quiver full of arrows around his back. He tied a nice Kamarkassa. He held his bow in his hand. It was radiant. He mounted his horse and set off to see the Shah. The radiant Khalsa rode with him.
Where the palace of the Shah was, the Shah was sitting inside. When Guru ji came close, he commanded the Singhs: “stay here on your horses.” Guru ji took Bhai Sahib Singh ji with him along with a few others and went inside to the Shah’s palace. Some Umraavs were sitting with the Shah. Bahadhur Shah saw Guru ji, looking like the sun. Bahadhur Shah felt the presence of Guru ji as thought the sun was shining in his palace. He blossomed like the lotus seeing Guru ji. He got up and quickly came to Guru ji. He touched Guru ji’s feet with his two hands. He placed his head upon Guru ji’s feet. Sri Prabhoo ji looked at him with blessings. He patted the Shah’s back and said: “enjoy the kingdom with joy till you are alive. I had pulled the roots of the kingdom but I have given it back to you at your request. As long as the age of your body remains, the wishes of your mind will be fulfilled.” A sandalwood stool was laid out for Guru ji to sit on. Beautiful sheets were laid on top. Guru ji was seated there. The Shah folded his hands and said: “you helped me on the battlefield. I know this. I did your Darshan on the battlefield. You killed my enemy and gave me the Sultanate. The kingdom of the home, all of the archers came to me. They all said: “I killed Tara Azam.” I didn’t believe them though. I looked at the arrows in their quivers but none of them matched. The liars backed off then. I have kept the two arrows. I want to match them with the arrows in your quiver.” The Shah called for the two arrows that killed his brother. Guru ji took out the arrows from his quiver. They all had the gold pieces as did the two arrows that killed Tara Azam. They were of the same make. The Shah saw this and was overjoyed. He said: “you are the Omnipotent One, the Treasure of Virtues. There is no one like you in the world. None are equal to you. My mind knows your greatness. You gave me the kingdom and its wealth.” Sri Prabhoo ji said: “your wishes have been fulfilled. Remain on good terms with the Guru’s home. Your kingdom will remain stable till you are alive. Nobody will have what you have.” The Shah saw Guru ji’s expensive Kalgi and said: “your Kalgi has gems worth Lakhs. They shine brightly. I have such a Kalgi as well.” He said to his treasurer: “bring it along with expensive cloths as well as a Dhukdhuki (necklace). Bring it now. Don’t delay.” The treasure brought the gifts right away. The gifts were placed in front of Guru ji. The Shah said: “it is now the month of Harr (June/July) and it is raining a lot. It is not good to travel now. Everyone stays in one place. For this reason, accept my request: stay here so I can have your Darshan everyday. Please be compassionate and stay here during the Chumaasa. When you wish, you can leave then. Accept these gifts and take care of me, seeing me as your own.” Bhai Sahib Singh ji was called by Guru ji. He signalled Bhai Sahib Singh ji with his eyes to take the gifts. The trunk and the Kalgi that was shinning, they were all picked up by Bhai Sahib Singh ji along with the Dhukdhuki. Guru ji blessed the Shah and came outside. Bhai Sahib Singh ji followed. Everyone mounted their horses and came back to the Singhs. They all came back to the beautiful garden with nice trees. Guru ji wandered the garden that was kept nicely by the gardeners. The garden had peaches, mangoes, pomegranates, bananas, kathal, toot, bidhana, anjeer, jasmine, naalkel, Raibel, mogra, and other plants. They were nicely drenched with water. The Yamuna was close by. Many types of flowers were blooming. The shade was great. It was cool and peaceful. It made everyone happy. Sri Prabhoo ji went into a home and sat there. The Sangat of Agra came to do his Darshan. They brought many gifts.
A Jariya Suniyara Sikh lived there who was an expert goldsmith and really rich. He came to do Guru ji’s Darshan with his family. He bowed his head to Guru ji. The gifts piled up. Many met Guru ji and became blessed. Guru ji casted his blessings with his sight. The Sangat was in joy as they went to their homes.
1-47 Naunidh Khatri/ Kesh
A person named Naunidh Khatri came to see Guru ji with many Sikhs. His Gotra was Bhandari. He was quite wise and pondered on many Shastras. He came to meet Guru ji. He brought many gifts and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. He sat in front of Guru ji in bliss. He folded his hands and said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, you started a Panth that keeps their hair as part of their uniform. Guru Gareeb Nivaaj, the blesser of the poor, tell me; why did you make them keep their hair unshorn?” Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “you have read and pondered on many Shastras. In reading and listening to them, you have spent your whole life; did you understand why or not? To keep the hair is good in order to protect your Dharma. This has been the tradition from the time of Sanak, Sanandan, Sanatan and Sanad Kumar. Bharat Khand is a great Desh. To keep the hair is important for the Dharma.” Naunidh heard this and said: “you are speaking the truth. You are citing the great examples. Before, everyone kept their hair, but now it is not the same time.” Sri Guru ji said: “what does the time speak of? It is the same sun, the same moon, the same water, the same wind, fire, and earth. How can someone blame the time? The guilt should be seen in the self. You can’t keep it; speak the truth. To keep the hair, one is not capable of it but you are blaming “the time” in your own perception. Naunidh, listen to the Parsang: when I did the Battle of Mukatsar, I went to where the river flowed. When I was close to Kasur, there was an owner named Hussain Khan who heard of my arrival. Yaar Mohammed was sent as his ambassador to me. He was quite calm. He brought a letter that was for the purpose of deceit. He came to spy on us. To get news, he came to me. I figured out his façade and said to him: “what is the point for the ambassador? It is useless to stay with me. What do you want to achieve with me? The truth is, you can stay with me but it is of no use.” Hearing my words, Yaar Mohammed stayed with me. One day, he was sitting with me in my court. He spoke to make a decision: “tell me Gareeb Nivaaj, the Sikhs you had before, did they have hair as well or did you just make them do this now?” I heard this and said to him: “I will tell you everything: the Hindus and Turks of the past all kept their hair on their heads. This just stopped only a little while ago. It seems as though both have lost their Dharma.” Yaar Mohammed then said: “I have heard that it is important to keep hair in our religion as well. When did this stop in Islam? Tell me everything.” I then said to him: “your Paikamber, Ibrahim Khaleel, he saw a woman and got filled with desire. He couldn’t stop himself and said to her: “marry me and live in my home with joy.” The woman didn’t accept his proposal. She said to the Paikamber: “you already have a wife in your home. It will be a problem to live with her in the home.” Some days passed in this way but the Paikamber still had the memory of the woman in his mind. He became humble and came to the woman again and said: “do the Nikah with me. I think of you day and night. I wish to meet you all the time. Oh beloved, I will live by your will. I will do as you say.” The woman saw that Ibrahim had taken an attraction to her. She spoke to him: “give your wife a Talaaq (divorce), then I will marry you.” The Paikamber was burning in lust and did as she said. He divorced his wife from before. He married the other woman and mated with her in many ways. Many years passed as he enjoyed his time with her. After some time, his previous wife, he made love to her as well. When his second wife found out, she became very angry and saw her promise as broken. She came to Ibrahim and asked: “if one has broken the Shariya, tell me Paikamber: what should be done to them?” Ibrahim then said: “the rule is: one should be punished who breaks the Shariya. Without being punished, one his impure.” She saw the opportunity and said: “you have broken the Shariya! You gave your previous wife a divorce and made love to her. You are deserving of punishment!” Ibrahim heard his current wife’s words and accepted his guilt. He said: “oh beloved, you can do as you wish. I will always follow your wish.” His wife said: “whatever body part of yours touched her, that should be cut. This is a good punishment. You divorced your first wife and made love to her again. You are deserving of pain.” The Paikamber heard this and accepted the rule of Shariya. He became humble and folded his hands. He said: “oh beloved, you speak the truth. Save my life if you have love for me in your heart. I should be rightly punished but I want to be alive and live with you in peace and joy.” The woman saw him as humble and became compassionate. She said of his punishment: you touched her with your hands but they won’t be cut. The sleeves on your shirt should be cut instead.” Instead of his whole penis being cut, only the foreskin was cut which became the Sunnat. The lips that touched the woman, only the moustache was cut off. The hair of the chest was cut as well as the bun of hair on his head. When his followers saw this, they started to do as he did. In this way, all the Turks cut their hair and erased their previous traditions. Now listen to the history of the Hindus. The great and powerful Brahmin, Parshuram ji, fought and killed the Kshatriyas 21 times. He cut the hairs of their heads. He cut the hairs of their children. This became the tradition then. In Kaliyuga, the Rajas that took on the Nand name, they said: “these Brahmins recite Mantras in secrecy to gain power. They wish to destroy our kingdom.” This was their fear. They decided: “cut the hairs on the heads of all the Brahmins. The Devatas are not happy without hair. For this reason, cut all their hairs.” Hindus and Turks both began to cut their hairs in this way. They cut their hair and lost their Dharma. Naunidh, listen to about cutting hair: to keep the hair is the best thing. The Devatas are not happy without the hair. Don’t cut the good hair. People don’t think of what they are doing. They follow each other, as they see it. They follow the way of the world and become ugly. The Ishwar has made the human body in this way. He made the human body beautiful. He kept the hair on top of the head, which is the highest and most respected place. The hair made the human beautiful. People don’t think and cut their hair. They destroy the beauty of the Dharma. This bad wisdom has spread throughout the whole world. Who can stop now after seeing this tradition? The Brahmins composed Saloks, justifying the cutting of hair and planted them into the Puranas. They didn’t think of the old traditions. All Brahmins and non-Brahmins used to keep their hair.” Sri Guru ji spoke to Naunidh Khatri. He agreed with Guru ji. He said: “Dhan Dhan Guru.” He bowed to Guru ji and went to his home.
Prabhoo ji stayed in Agra in this way. People came and went for his Darshan. There was a beautiful home in the garden where he stayed. The trees were all filled with green leaves. There were many types of birds with many colours. There were many flowers and fruit trees in the garden, looking radiant. It was the time of the rains, the Paavas Ritu. The clouds came and rained. The peacocks sang and danced. The earth was drenched with water and blossoming. The ponds overflowed. The Jamuna flowed with a force. The heat was over. The pleasant and cool wind blew. Guru ji spent the Chaumasa in the garden. He completed the wishes of all the Sikhs. He would sometimes go to see the Shah. Kavi Santokh Singh will continue with the Katha.
1-48 Khan Khana/ Given a Response to the Syed for a Miracle
One day, Khan Khana came with great faith and devotion, understanding what was good for him. He humbly bowed to Guru ji’s lotus feet. Where the court of Khan Khana was, Guru ji was taken there. Khan Khana wanted Guru ji to come and make his court pure. He wanted to make his home pure. He had beautiful sheets laid out for Guru ji to sit on. Guru ji was seated with great respect. Many types of gifts were placed with folded hands. He became humble and made requests to Guru ji. Sri Prabhoo ji was impressed and blessed him with all the joys. Guru ji said: “there was a Khan Khana who was Akbar’s Mamma. He did a lot of good things in the world. You are like him.” Khan Khana was happy to hear this. He kept staring at Guru ji’s handsome face. Many wise Turks were sitting in the court of Khan Khana. Qazis and Mullahs sat there. Guru ji was wearing a Shamshir in his Gatra. Guru ji was sitting, looking like a lion, the most radiant and highest. Many people came to do his Darshan and bowed their heads. Whatever questions were asked, Guru ji responded to them. Satguru ji was being praised greatly. The sinners could not tolerate this. There was a Syed from Sirhind sitting there in the court. He saw Prabhoo ji’s radiance and became jealous. He said: “you are the Peer of Hindus. Everyone sees you as great and deep. Do you have some ability of holding any powers or not? Tell us. I want to make a decision about you. Your praise has spread everywhere.” Guru ji saw the doubt that the Syed raised. He spoke: “in the words of Bahadhur Shah, there are many powers there. He can make paupers into Panj Hazaaris (5,000 general). He can make high people into his obedient employees. He can make the Panj Hazaari into a pauper in a second. He can have anyone killed and any guilty person released. This is power in his words from his mouth.” The Syed raised his doubts again in front of everyone: “do you have this power or not? He is becoming the Badshah and will be able to say commands. It will be obeyed. I am asking if you have powers or not. If you do then show it.” The Master heard the doubt in front of all. Guru ji reached into his pocket and took out some gold coins. Sri Prabhoo ji spoke in front of all: “look at the Dinars in my hand. These are powerful as well. This is the second power. Whoever has it can do anything with it. Thousands have fought and died for it.” The Syed spoke: “what power do you have? There are many types of wealth. Thousands have it and follow it.” Satguru ji heard this and took out his Shamshir. It shined like lightening in front of all. The Syed’s and the other’s faces went pale all of a sudden, seeing the sword. They couldn’t raise their eyes anymore. With a radiant face, flashing his radiant sword, Guru ji said: “this is a power too! It can take off your head in a second. It will fall like a fruit falling from a branch. You won’t have any questions or answers then. You will lose your life for your doubts.” Seeing Guru ji’s amazing radiance, the Syed became embarrassed. He couldn’t say anything anymore. He lowered his head in shame. Guru ji sat there for some time and then went back to his Dhera. Guru ji rode his horse slowly back to his Dhera. Sri Guru ji came to his Dhera and got off his horse. He sat on his beautiful bed.
One day, Guru ji was casually sitting in his court. Some Pathaans claimed that the Pathaans that worked for Guru ji before, owed them some money. They went to the Qazi and said: “the Guru has forcefully kept our money. He has some amount owing to us. For faults we are unaware of, we are not able to get the money.” The Qazi wrote a Parwana towards Guru ji. The Pathaans brought the command to Guru ji. When Sri Guru ji read the command in his court, he spoke: “listen Pathaans, go now and tell the Qazi that within my army, there are many flies that are making the food impure. Tell him to first write a Parwana for the flies not to sit on the food.” Guru ji said this and then ripped the Parwana written by the Qazi and threw it onto the ground. The Pathaans saw this and were surprised. To disobey the Parwana of a Qazi was a great crime. The Pathaans came back to the Qazi and said: “the Guru didn’t obey your Parwana. He ripped it and told you to command the flies in his army first.” The Qazi heard this and burned in anger. The fool’s heart burned. He didn’t know Guru ji’s greatness. There was nothing he could do so he went to the Badshah right away. He said to him: “the Guru ripped up the Ilhaam. He has violated the Shariya. He ripped it up and thew it on the ground. He did not have any fear in his heart. The Badshah got angry when he heard this and began to interrogate the Qazi and scolded him: “what did you do, you fool? He is of the caste of Allah! He is a great Fakir. How did you send him a Parwana? You did a very bad thing. You should have folded your hands in front of him. Instead, you sent him a command.” He dismissed the Qazi of his status, seeing Guru ji as the Peer of Peers. He said: “he gave me the Sultanate.” The Shah could not accept this.
Raja Jai Singh Svaee and another, Raja Ajeet Singh; they came with their armies. They heard of Guru ji’s praises and came to meet him. They came to Agra to meet him. They brought two horses and a lot of money as gifts. Many soldiers came with them. They came to Guru ji and bowed to his feet. They received Guru ji’s command. They were happy to meet Guru ji. Guru ji said: “tell me about yourself. How much army do you have? How big is your kingdom?” The Rajas folded their hands and said: “if we gather our army then we have 125,000 horses. We spend money on them. The Rajputs are well-skilled in wielding the sword. We can cause chaos for the enemy in a matter of seconds. We have 250,000 soldiers between the two of us. We always move together.” Guru ji said: “you have a lot of army and kingdom. You are radiant, carrying many weapons. There is one thing bad about you: you gave the cow to the butchers and destroyed your Dharma.” The kings heard this and were surprised. They thought hard but couldn’t figure out what Guru ji said. They said: “in our whole kingdom, we don’t let any cow butchers live there. Nobody can kill cows in our kingdom. If we see such a butcher, we kill them and save the cow. Who told you this? Tell us. Make them stop saying this.” Guru ji spoke of the riddle he said: “you gave your daughters to the Turks. There is nothing worse than this. Kachvaha, Handa and Rathore; this is what you call yourself and have your honours praised. After all this, you still have a bad tradition. Nobody stopped you from this before. I am stopping you now. From now on, don’t give your daughters to the Turks.” The Rajas heard this and thought to themselves: “Guru ji is saying this for our own honour. The slander of the Rajputs spread to all the lands. The Rajputs have been stained.” Both Rajas thought and said to Guru ji: “the good seed of the Rajputs shall not give their daughters to the Turks from now on! Sri Guru ji, your Pitamah, he is praised till today among the Rajputs. He saved 52 Rajas from the Gwalior Qila. He had them freed, who were our ancestors. You are his grandson and just like him. You fight on the battlefield as a great warrior. You are always filled with Bir Rass. We have heard of your battles. You made all of the Turks mourn.” Sri Guru ji blessed them. He called for a sword and a shield. He gave them to Raja Jai Singh. He took the weapons and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. Guru ji gave Raja Ajeet Singh a quiver full of arrows and a fierce bow. Receiving the gifts from Guru ji, the Rajas were happy. They bowed and took leave. They praised Guru ji as they went to their Dheras: “he rightfully sits on the throne of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji.” Sri Prabhoo ji spent many days there. The Sangat came to do his Darshan. They brought money and many types of gifts. Their wishes were all fulfilled as they praised Guru ji.
1-49 Giving Wisdom to Bahadhur Shah/ Keeping the Dharma of the Sikh Daughter
There was a Suniyara (goldsmith) Sikh named Jawahar Singh of the Jareeya Gotra. He had a very beautiful daughter who was like a princess. The young girl came to do Guru ji’s Darshan one day. She brought very fine clothes and gifts. She bowed to Guru ji’s lotus feet and sat down in the court. Many Singhs were sitting close to Guru ji. Everyone sat under a beautiful tree in the garden. Bahadhur Shah casually came to the court of Guru ji that day. He was walking around on a walk as he had come. As he came close to Guru ji, he found out that Guru ji was there. He wished to do Guru ji’s Darshan. He got off his horse and came into the garden. Guru ji had rugs laid out for the Shah and his men. Many Singhs gathered and came to Guru ji’s court. The Shah came and bowed to Guru ji. Guru ji had the Shah sit near him with respect. Many other people were standing around. Guru ji looked towards the Shah. The Shah looked towards Guru ji. The Sikh’s daughter remained sitting in the court. When Bahadhur Shah saw the young Sikh girl, he became attracted to her beauty. He became lustful for her. He kept looking at her like a Chakor looking at the moon. The Shah was afraid of Guru ji but he couldn’t control his mind. He was greedy for her sight. He made many types of conversations with Guru ji as an excuse to staying there and looking at the young girl. He said: “in our religion, there is great reward to read the Qalima with love. That person will not go to the fires of the Dojak. Such a person goes straight to Heaven and enjoys many pleasures.” Guru ji heard this and said: “it is not necessarily truly. You are rewarded by your Karma. If you ready the Qalima and do bad deeds, they can’t be protected from Hell. They have to suffer many types of pains. The Qalima cannot save them.” Bahadhur Shah said: “saying the Qaima saves us. Is this a lie or is it the truth? How can we find out? Without knowing the truth, I can’t have faith. What is written, I believe it is the truth.” Guru ji called the treasurer close to him. As he came close, Guru ji said: “there is a Rajitpun in the treasury that has the Qalima and year of mint written on it. Bring it in your hand and go to the market. Buy many Takkas with it. Bahadhur Shah is sitting here so go quick. Bring it here right now.”
The treasurer obeyed and took the Rajitpun to the market. He said: “give me as many Takkas as this Rajitpun is worth.” When the merchant saw this, he threw it and said: “this is a bad Rajitpun.” The treasurer when to 4 or 5 other places. Nobody gave him the change. He came back to Satguru ji and said: “nobody took this Rajitpun. It is not good. They get angry and throw it back at me. They didn’t give me the Takkas. They scolded me and threw me out of their shops.” Guru ji heard this and took the Rajitpun. Guru ji said: “listen oh Master of Delhi: the ones who say that one can read the Qalima and go to the Bahist, it is still their kingdom. They haven’t lost. Go and decide for yourself. Your Bazaar is nearby. The silver coin is not worth anything. It only has the Qalima written on it. Nobody cared about the Qalima written on it. They just knew that it wasn’t worth anything. Nobody accepted it. They saw it as worthless and threw it. To where the kingdom of the Turks is, your own Qalima did not protect your coins. If we send this to another country, where one decides good or bad; how can the Qalima protect you? It will take the corrupt to hell. Where the court of Parmeshwar is, everyone is thoroughly tested there. Taking on a body, whatever deeds humans do, good and bad is all decided there. The person experiences pain and pleasure according to their Karma. The ones who wear false disguises, these are superficial. They don’t protect you in any way. Only the deeds are decided and give you your life. What you have seen here, right in front of your eyes, this is what happens in the Prabhoo’s court. It is the true justice. The clean hearts are released. The corrupt suffer pain. Nobody accepts the disguises. The good and bad deeds are never erased.” Bahadhur Shah heard this and went quiet. His eyes were glued to the pretty girl. He made another conversation or two. Guru ji answered his questions. Bahadhur Shah tried to make more talk to sit for a longer time so he can look at the girl. Satguru ji knew what Bahadhur Shah was thinking. He said to the Shah: “your mind is smitten with the young girl. Tell me the truth. Do you wish to be with her? Don’t lie in front of me. Tell me what is in your heart.” The Shah got scared. He folded his hands and said: “Sri Guru ji, nothing is hidden from you. You know every heart. Whover keeps secrets from you, he is a fool. My mind has been attracted to her. My sight is stuck on her.” Guru ji heard the truth and said: “if your mind desires her, I will send her to you in the evening. Satisfy your desires then.” The Shah was happy. He bowed, got up and went home. He waited for her in the evening.
The Sikh’s daughter folded her hands and said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, what did you do to me? We do your Simran to save our Dharma. You save us from many problems. Why are you destroying my Dharma? This will be evident that I will be with the Turk. I am really worried about this. If I don’t go, this is your command; I will be sinned upon my head. If I go, my Dharma will be destroyed.” Sri Guru ji smiled and said: “Shaabaash! Shaabaash! You valued your Dharma over the riches of the Emperor. Go there by my command. I will protect your Dharma.” The Shah had left one of his men with Guru ji. He went with the girl. Guru ji sent a Sikh with the girl. The girl walked in between the two. She had faith on Guru ji. She did not waiver.
The Badshah was waiting for the girl like an injured person. He saw the girl walking from a distance but saw that she was between two lions. What he saw was that the girl was holding two lions from their ears. The Shah was really scared, seeing the lions. He thought to himself: “this girl is very fierce! If she comes close to me, she will kill me.” As she came closer, Bahadhur Shah got even more scared. He signaled his men with his hands and said: “go quickly and tell her to go back. I see her as too fierce.” Nobody else could see the lions. The Shah’s man and the Sikh understood the Shah’s signal and turned back right away. They took the girl away. The girl quickly came back to Guru ji and said: “you are Dhan!” She grabbed Guru ji’s feet and said: “you protected me from a big sin!” She got Guru ji’s permission and went back to her home. She praised Guru ji wherever she went. Guru ji stayed in the beautiful garden and did many activities with bliss.
1-50 Firing the Arrows/ Hunting with Bahadhur Shah
The Day to bathe at Pushkar had come and many had gathered to go there. Khan Khana went to Bahadhur Shah, to where he was sitting. Khan Khana saluted the Shah. The Shah said to him: “many people took permission and went to bathe at the Teerath. Has Satguru ji gone as well or not? If he wishes to go, then he can go.” Khan Khana said: “I have seen that Guru ji is still in his Dhera. I can go on your behalf and ask him. I will tell you if he wants to go or not.” Khan Khana came to the Prabhoo and said what Bahadhur Shah had said. Sri Guru ji spoke to him: “that Teerath is for the Hindus. What am I going to do there?” Khan Khana told Bahadhur Shah of what Guru ji said. The Shah was confused.
The next day, Guru ji was invited to the court of Bahadhur Shah. A sandalwood stool was set on a high place. The Shah bowed and asked Guru ji: “the two paths; which one do you like better? Which Panth do you keep your faith upon? Are you Hindu or Turk?” Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “the path that the Hindus and Turks walk on, I think well for both. I see the person’s love and give them wisdom.” Bahadhur Shah then said: “there is One Khuddah and One Imaan (religion). Which way does your heart go? Tell me.” Guru ji smiled and said: “there are 3 Khuddahs.” The Shah said: “what is this you say? The wise people don’t say this. There is only One Khuddah that I’ve heard of from all. The Vedas and Quraan say this.” Prabhoo ji heard this and explained: “there is One Khuddah and there is one Imaan. Being a Turk, if that person comes in front of you and says “Ram Narayan,” you stop them and consider it as bad. You tell them to say “Maula Paak.” You gather and say to each other: “the joys of Bahist are only for us. The Dojak has been made for the Hindus.” You don’t like their ideology. The names of Khuddah such as Maula and others; if a Hindu does Simran of these names, then the Hindus say: “he has spoiled.” They get angry at him. Their whole caste and clan throw him out. Whoever sees the One in all, they have destroyed taking sides. The two sides were made and they fight. The ones who see one, they don’t fight with either. There is only One, there is no fight. Consider that as our Panth.” The Shah heard this and went quiet. He didn’t have an answer for Guru ji. For some time, the Treasure of Virtues sat. After leaving the court, Guru ji came back to his Dhera.
Unique and expensive gifts came to Guru ji on a daily basis. Many types of clothes and jewellery came. Fruits and nuts from far away lands came. They were delicious. Bahadhur Shah also sent the best fruits and nuts for Guru ji. He would send beautiful jewellery for Guru ji. Many times he would come and sometimes he would call Guru ji to his court. He solidified his love to Guru ji. He sent a lot of money for the expense of Guru ji’s Dhera.
One Umraav came to Guru ji’s Dhera once. He bowed and said: “I have heard they you are a great archer. Many skilled people come to you. The ones that fought by your side, they have seen your archery. The ones that fought you, saw your arrows and praised you: “there is no archer like you right now. Nobody can fire arrows like you.” The ones that fought you in Anandpur and Chamkaur, they all say this. They all swear upon your archery. I wish to see your skill. Please be gracious and show me your skills. See my wish and fulfill it.” Prabhoo ji heard the request and grabbed his fierce bow. He mounted an arrow and pulled it. He said: “tell me which target to hit. Even if it is far, it won’t survive.” The Umraav saw a tree, far away. He pointed to the tree and said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, aim for that.” Guru ji released the arrow which flew really fast. After hitting the tree, Guru ji released another right behind the first; and then a third. The 3 arrows hit the same target. In total, he hit 5 arrows in the same place. The Umraav saw this and was shocked in amazement. He said: “your skill is great! It is Dhan! Which enemy can survive this? I have heard of your skill but now I’ve seen it as such. Thousands of enemies praise you.” The Umraav sat for about an hour and a half and went back. That Umraav praised Guru ji: “he has all of the virtues of a warrior.” The Umraav went to Bahadhur Shah and told him everything: “I have never seen such an archer before. Man, elephant or horse cannot survive in front of him.” The Shah said: “I wish to see this too. I want to see how he fires arrows.”
A servant was sent to Guru ji with a message: “let’s go hunting. Bless me and hunt with me. This is my wish.” Satguru ji accepted the request. He slept the night and got ready in the morning. The Shah got ready to hunt. He took cheetahs, dogs and many hawks. He brought many species of hunting animals and birds towards Guru ji. Many species of hawks were brought. Guru ji called for his horse. Guru ji wore his sword and quiver. He wore beautiful jewellery. Who wouldn’t be attracted to his beauty? Guru ji mounted his horse. The Shah came and bowed to Guru ji.
Where the jungle was, Guru ji and the Shah went there. They saw many big deer. Bahadhur Shah with Guru ji; killed many boars. Guru ji killed the animals with his arrows. Bahadhur Shah was amazed at how fast Guru ji released arrows. Whichever animal was hit, died right away. Both hunted for a while. They saw the cheetahs hunt. The hawks and dogs killed many animals. As they went towards the deeper jungle, they saw a huge lion. Somebody saw the lion and told Bahadhur Shah. The Shah took his army and Guru ji. The Shah commanded his men: “kill the lion with a sword and shield. No arrow or bullet is to be fired. I will reward such a person.” The lion roared. A Pathaan named Billund Khan was standing nearby. He took his sword and shield. He went to kill the lion. He came in front of the lion with stubbornness. The lion saw the Pathaan and pounced on him quickly. The lion killed the Pathaan. Everyone saw this and got scared. Bahadhur Shah then said: “whoever kills the lion, they will be rewarded.” Another Pathaan, Wazeed Khan, got angry and came forward. He was the Sardar of many. He challenged the lion. The lion pounced on him and pressed him down. The lion ripped him apart. No other soldier went forward with courage. Two Umraavs were killed. Everyone got scared. Guru ji then looked towards his men and called upon Bhai Roshan Singh ji. He had a Kataar, a sword and a shield with him. The Singh wanted to destroy the other Singh (lion). He saw an opportunity and put his shield forwards. As the lion came forward and jumped above Bhai Roshan Singh ji, the Singh sliced the lion’s belly with his Kataar. He stabbed the belly of the lion. The front of the lion rested on the shield. Bhai Roshan Singh ji flipped the lion over and threw him to the ground. Guru ji, the Shah and the whole army saw this spectacle. The lion was killed in front of everyone. The Shah was about to give many rewards to Bhai Roshan Singh ji. He was going to give him a bag full of gold coins. Bhai Roshan Singh ji refused and said: “I can’t take this. The Guru, whose power killed the lion, gave me all of the Ridhis and Siddhis; I have no wish to receive anything from anyone else; I have his support in this Lok and in the Parlok. I only have faith in him.” The Shah and the Umraavs heard this and praised Bhai Roshan Singh ji. They all went back to their own Dheras. Bhai Roshan Singh ji was praised by all. The whole army praised him: “he killed the lion without any fear.”
1-51 Bahadhur Shah Backs Down from his Promise
Sri Satguru ji thought of the task he asked Bahadhur Shah to do in his heart. He spoke to Bhai Nand Lal ji and others: “the Mamma of the Shah as well as Hakam Rai; speak to them about the written promise they had brought. It is time for Bahadhur Shah to complete my task now by which he received the Sultanate. The word he gave me; he must fulfill it now. Think about what I am saying. They didn’t think of it.” The three of them heard this and said: “we believe in your words.” They came to meet the Shah and saluted him. They told him of his previous promise. They said it in front of him: “you had given your word and then you had written it for Prabhoo ji. You haven’t mentioned it till now. You didn’t even remember it. The Guru called us to remind us. He wants you to complete his one task. You should do what it takes to keep Guru ji happy. You should complete your word. You will be in joy in both Lok and Parlok.” Bahadhur Shah heard this and said: “I will fulfill his wish but it should be easy to do. I will think of the task. Please ask him to come here tomorrow. I will listen to what his task is. I will think about it afterwards. I will make him happy then.” After saying this, he spent the rest of the day in contemplation.
The next day, Bahadhur Shah held court. One Umraav came to Guru ji and said: “Sri Guru ji, come to the Shah to meet him.” The Master rode his horse to Bahadhur Shah. He came to where all of the Umraavs were sitting with the Shah. They all bowed to Guru ji after seeing him. Bahadhur Shah got up and bowed. Guru ji entered the court. The Shah bowed and had Guru ji sit close to him on a beautiful sandalwood stool. The Shah spoke of some of the battles; Anandpur, Chamkaur and other battles he spoke of with Guru ji. Hearing the bravery and skill of Guru ji, everyone in the court praised him. Bahadhur Shah then said: “please tell me what your great task is.” As the Umraavs sat, Guru ji spoke: “the Umraavs and other officers have oppressed the Hindus. They would instigate your father into doing bad things to them. They were tyrants and guilty of crimes. They were disrespectful towards my father and called for his arrest. They did bad with the Brahmins and others. They used the Shariya and misused it by their bad wisdom. They committed a lot of crimes. The ones that fought me, the big Sooba of Sirhind; my child Sahibzadas were killed without guilt. Other guilty Umraavs and Maulanas who are guilty of crimes; send your men right now and arrest them all. Tie them up and give them to me. I will hang them or decapitate them. I will kill them to take revenge. As they gathered their crimes, they will suffer pain in the same way. They didn’t think of their Parlok or their Dharma. They killed Turks, Hindus and saints. I will take revenge. I will destroy all of the sinners.” When Bahadhur Shah heard this, he got really scared. He became worried and didn’t speak anything. He thought for a long time. He then spoke to Satguru ji after a while: “I will give you the answer after a while. I need to speak to my ministers and analyse this.” He gave leave to Guru ji.
Guru ji got up and came back to the Garden. Bahadhur Shah gathered all his advisors. He was worried about what Guru ji said. He spoke to all his men: “how can I complete this task? I don’t even have full control or radiance yet in the whole land. If I arrest one Sooba, there will be revolt in the Sultanate. The armies will revolt in thousands. I will be distrusted by all. If the Soobas revolt and fight me, the whole country will be in chaos. What should I say to Guru ji by which he doesn’t get angry at me? I want to be on good terms with him.” When he spoke with worry, the ministers all thought and spoke to Bahadhur Shah: “the best thing to say to Guru ji is don’t say anything for one year. Tell him: “my command is not fully established yet. When I become radiant in the land in a good way, I will complete your task.” The ministers gave advice to the Shah in this way. They spent about two days thinking about this.
The Shah then called Guru ji. Guru ji came on his horse. The Shah bowed and had Guru ji sit with respect. He folded his hands and spoke of his state: “I received the Sultanate by your radiance. I hope for my kingdom to not being ruined. Fearing this, I wish for you to wait one year. Don’t have the Qazis and Mullahs arrested yet. The Soobas will all revolt. They will not trust me. After a year, I will complete your task in any way I can. I don’t want to be a Bemukh from you. I know all of the favours you have done for me.” Sri Guru ji heard this and said: “now, lying seems to be favourable to your mind. This was the reason I had your oath written out by you. I knew you would have backed down from your words after you received the Sultanate. You are backing down from your written promise now. You didn’t complete my one task. I had already destroyed the Sultanate of the Turks. You became humble in front of me so I gave it to you. You still didn’t fulfill your end of the promise. You backed down. I wanted to give you the greatness and have you fulfill the tasks. You didn’t have the good Karma for the greatness. Understand this now in your heart: I will create one Sikh and send him with great radiance. Wherever the criminals and guilty liars will be, he will go to them and punish them. He will be really powerful. The Soobas and Mullahs you have, he will kill them all at once! He will mix your sultanate into the dust. Your armies won’t be able to face him. Whoever was guilty towards me and the Hindus; the villages and lands, everything will be destroyed when he wages his battles. Sirhind and other cities where people live; they will all be ruined and looted. They will be destroyed. Lakhs will face pain and problems. Nobody will be capable of avoiding these problems and pains. Your country will be ruined. There will be no one to protect it. This will happen now for sure. The ones who killed the Sahibzadas, my Sikh will capture him and kill him. In this way I will take my revenge. You will see all this with your own eyes. You won’t be able to win.” Satguru ji spoke with a little anger. He got up and mounted his horse. He came back to his Dhera. He spent some more days there. The Shah’s worry grew by the day. He didn’t say anything to Guru ji: “I wonder what will happen now.” He remained quiet. He spoke to all of his advisors.
Thus ends the Dakhanain, the First Ain.
