1-31 Bhai Daya Singh ji meets with Aurangzeb with the Zafarnama
Satguru ji was thinking of Bhai Daya Singh ji and said: “it’s been a long time since he left. Did he meet the Turk Badshah, or not? It has taken a long time. I want to hear the whole news before I head out to the south. I wonder what happened there.” Sri Bhagwan ji was waiting.
Listen to what happened in the south. To give the Hukamnama of Guru ji, Bhai Daya Singh ji was making a great effort. There were many officers, rich, viziers and Mullahs. Bhai Daya Singh ji met them all but they didn’t give Aurangzeb news of his arrival. Some were Manmukhs who were against Guru ji. They were without faith and huge Bemukhs. If one would get ready to take Bhai Daya Singh ji for a meeting, another fool would stop them. Bhai Daya Singh ji used a lot of efforts and strategies but nothing worked. He became helpless and wrote an Ardaas which was received by Sri Satguru ji.
A couple of messengers came to Damdama. They bowed to Guru ji’s feet and gave him the letter. Guru ji opened the letter and read it. Bhai Daya Singh ji wrote a request: “this is your work. Please make it a success. As you sent me, please make the Shah meet me. The people here are fools and sinners. They don’t let me meet the Shah Chaugata. I have tried many things but I still haven’t been able to meet him yet. Daya Singh writes this request to you. I wrote to you the truth after all my efforts. I bow to your lotus feet. I fold my hands, over and over again. Bless me and be by my side. Only you can make this a success.” Satguru ji read the letter and understood everything. Guru ji wrote a response: “get ready in every way. The Shah will read your letter. You will meet him. He will call you by himself. He will listen to you and speak to you.” Guru ji had this letter sent back to Bhai Daya Singh ji.
Bhai Daya Singh ji received Guru ji’s letter. When he read Guru ji’s letter, he understood Guru ji’s work: “when you go to the Badshah, he has one of my Shasters. Bring it back from him.” Bhai Daya Singh ji was really happy to read this. It was as though the task was already done. That day passed. It was night. Nauranga used to do Pranayama (which he learned from Baba Ram Rai ji). He was able to leave his body by this Yog. He was able to do this everyday to go to the Kabba in Mecca and offer his Fazzar Namaz. When Aurangzeb saw the time, he used his practice to leave his body. He arrived in Mecca to do the Namaz. Guru ji was watching him. Guru ji knew that Aurangzeb was filled with pride about his form. Prabhoo ji wanted to destroy his pride. Guru ji tied his Kumerkassa and fastened his weapons. He mounted his horse and transported to Mecca. Satguru ji roamed around the Mandir. When Aurangzeb came out after doing his Nimaaz, he saw the form of Prabhoo ji, standing right in front of him. Guru ji looked at Nauranga with fierceness and anger. Nauranga’s Pranas were about to end. He was scared to death. Guru ji spoke fierce words: “who are you, you fool?! You are filled with Pride! Walk ahead of me if you want what is go for you!” Guru ji signalled with his arrow to walk ahead. Aurangzeb trembled with fear and walked ahead. He had never seen Guru Gobind Singh ji before. Guru ji made Nauranga walk ahead and took him to the mountain, far away, where Hazrat Mohammed was revealed the Quran. The court of the Purshotam was in session there. Nauranga was made to stand in the middle. Nauranga stood still in fear. He was surprised to see the interesting place. The Akaash Vaani happened that could only be heard and not seen: “oh man, you egotistical fool! You are unaware. Don’t be proud of your form! The Guru you are looking for, he stands before you. I am the Guru and the Guru is me. You are a human. How can you be equal to him? Don’t try to be equal to him, you proud fool. He is the Sumer Mountain and you are a speck of dust, you human. Don’t be proud of your kingdom. Today or tomorrow, it will be destroyed. Satguru ji, leave him now.” Guru ji came back. He stood in front of the Shah and said: “take this Kapeera Kataar of mine. My Singhs have been sitting near you for many days. They wanted to see you. I sent them. They will ask you for this Kataar. Give it to them. Take care of it till then. Go back now. I didn’t punish you yet, otherwise I would have finished you now.” Naurang was released. He trembled in fear. He regretted his mistakes.
Satguru ji came back to Damdama Sahib. Auranga came back to his camp in Ahmednagar. He couldn’t sleep the night. His fear kept him up. It was too much. During the Fazzar, he bathed and did his Namaz. He dressed his body pure and came to sit in his court. He called everyone to his court. The Umraavs and Maulanas came. The viziers and advisors all came. Many Qazis and scholars came. They all saluted him and sat in their own places. Aurangzeb said to the whole court: “have the Singhs of the Guru come here?” Many heard this and folded their hands, saying: “Sire, they have been here for many days, but nobody brought them to you. They have been trying to meet you and tried many efforts but they weren’t able to come here.” Aurangzeb heard this and commanded his men to call for the Singhs.
Bhai Daya Singh ji came inside with some other men. Bhai Dharam Singh ji came as well. They didn’t bow their heads to the Turk. They presented the Hukamnama in front of the Shah and said: “Vahiguru Gur ji ki Fateh!” They said the Fateh as they looked towards the Hukamnama. The letter was presented. The Singhs maintained their Sikhi rules. Auranga Chaugata saw this and the fool didn’t say anything, intoxicated in his ego. He read some of the letter and had some of it read. He understood some of it and had some of it explained to him [He read the 12 Hakayats but did not say the Fateh each time]. After reading the Zafarnama, Bhai Daya Singh ji said: “give us back what is ours.” The Kataar was given in secrecy. Aurangzeb heard this and said: “who are you and where are you from? What work do you have and who sent you?” Bhai Daya Singh ji said: “we are the Sikhs of the Guru. He has sent us. We came from Madhur Desh. Satguru ji told us to meet you.” Nauranga heard this and said: “where is your Guru now? Where is he sitting, where he sent you from? Is he still there or did he go somewhere else?” Bhai Daya Singh ji heard this and said: “we see our Guru in every place. Wherever you think of him, he is present. Guru ji is in front of you right now.” Nauranga asked the Singhs: “you are the Sikhs of the Guru. You and your Guru have powers to show miracles.” Bhai Daya Singh ji responded: “the dogs of the Guru can do miracles as well. The Guru and the Guru’s Sikhs are obviously powerful. This is not surprising.” Aurangzeb heard this and his chest got filled with anger. He spoke with skepticism: “if you speak like this without doubt then call a dog here, right now! I want to see its powers. I want to see how a dog can be powerful. I want to see it now.” Bhai Daya Singh ji heard this and said: “Bhai Dharam Singh ji, go to our camp and bring the dog that came with us.” The hunter had taken the dog. The dog had a skinny face. Its tail was long. It was tall with long teeth. The dog had eaten Guru ji’s Seet Prashaad. The dog was brought to the court. Aurangzeb looked at the dog. Bhai Daya Singh ji said to the dog: “say something to the Shah. He wants to hear something from you. Say something so his mind becomes humble.” The dog spoke to the Shah: “you came from our kind before! You separated from us and have been in pain! Come back among us! You low life! You have been separated from us for a long time. You don’t know how to be a human. What do you need to be among the humans here?” The Shah heard this and became embarrassed. He couldn’t say anything. The advisors and Umraavs were sent off. Only the two Singhs remained in the court. The Chavgatha said to them: “the Khalsa has illuminated in the world but my kingdom still remains. The Guru was too haste to create it. I am not done yet. When my reign was to end, then the Khalsa should have been created. They would have been in joy.” Bhai Daya Singh ji said: “you were haste too. You wanted to make everyone follow the same religion. You wanted to destroy the Hindu Dharam. The Satguru made three religions. The greatest, the Khalsa is now born!” Nauranga then said: “what does your Guru do?” Bhai Daya Singh ji said: “he collects weapons. He has sent one weapon to you. We want that now.” Nauranga said: “I was gone far where the Satguru gave me the Kapeera. He told me to take care of it. So I have it with care.” After saying that, he gave the Kataar to Bhai Daya Singh ji. Bhai Daya Singh ji took the Kataar with great respect. Nauranga then said: “I am of the same political level as the Guru. Daya Singh, I have seen him with my eyes. Where can I meet him?” Bhai Daya Singh ji spoke with Bir Rass: “he will have a sword to his waist, bow in his hand; the Satguru can be met on the battlefield! He is a brave warrior! He wears weapons. He rides with many warriors!” The Shah said: “the whole world calls me the Emperor. I keep a big army. The whole public is mine. If I stop them from coming, then who will fight from your side? Tell him to understand this and come meet me, oh wise one. Your strength won’t work on me.” The Singhs said: “his army is invisible! They are in the millions and billions. They stay with the True Paatshaah, standing in front of him with their hands folded. They stay with him, day and night. The Khalsa is revealed. Its praises will grow. By the day, their powers grow. They will cause chaos in the world. Nobody will be able to face the Khalsa.” When Aurangzeb heard this, he became humble. He understood that his power and radiance was deteriorating fast. He gave the Kapeera to Bhai Daya Singh ji. He wrote a Parwana and gave leave to the Singhs with great worry in his heart. The seed of illness began to grow right away, that was planted by the Zafarnama. Nauranga figured out that his death was coming close. That was the reason for his death. He sent two of his guards and told them about Guru ji. He wrote Parwanas to all: “nobody is to fight with the Guru, no matter where he goes.” Bhai Daya Singh ji and Bhai Dharam Singh ji understood that their task was now a success: “it is now good to leave. Let’s go and do the Darshan of the Ocean of Compassion.”
1-32 Deciding to go to the Dakhan (Deccan)/ Abhai Ram/ Dewanas Run Away
Bhai Daya Singh ji and Bhai Dharam Singh ji left Aurangzeb and started their way back to Satguru ji. They travelled and did the Simran of Sri Guru ji on the way. The power they received from Prabhoo ji in their words, that was proved in front of the Shah. Bhai Daya Singh ji gave Aurangzeb all his answers right away. Bhai Daya Singh ji made the dog speak the language of humans. Whose Prabhoo is without limits and is the wisest; that person becomes greater than great. They have no equals. The two Singhs sang the praises of Satguru ji as they came. They did his Simran. They set up camps at night along the way.
Listen to the Katha of Satguru ji. Listen oh listeners, listen to the beautiful Katha as it happened. [Guru ji wanted to bring the Kartarpur Saroop of Guru Granth Sahib ji from Dheermal. Dheermal’s family refused. Guru ji then began to re-write the Guru Granth Sahib ji (from memory), including the Bani of Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji. Shaheed Bhai Mani Singh ji was the scribe and Shaheed Baba Deep Singh ji prepared the quills and the ink. Guru Gobind Singh ji uttered the Bani everyday and did the Katha of the Bani. 48 Singhs listened to the Katha. In 9 months and 9 days, he uttered the Bani of Guru Granth Sahib ji, while also doing its Katha. The 48 Singhs received Bedahi Mukti. Bhai Mani Singh ji and Baba Deep Singh ji then became the original Principals of the Gyaaniyan Di Taksaal. Guru ji taught Sangeet and composed many musical compositions. He prepared and taught many Pakhavaj and Jori compositions].
One day, Guru ji spoke in the Divaan: “come with me to the Dakhan. I have many types of tasks to do there. Those tasks are necessary. They can’t be avoided or stopped. Dal Singh, take the kingdom of Delhi! I will place the Crown of Delhi on your head. I will destroy the Turks in their homes. I will make you sit on the Throne and establish your great kingdom.” Everyone heard this and lost their patience. They said: “Prabhoo ji, Dakhan Desh is too far! This place of yours, Damdama, we see it as the same as Delhi. This kingdom is enough for us. There is enough lentils and millet here for us to eat. With your blessings, we have no shortage. We want you to stay here forever. Whatever you wish for, it comes here. The Sangat from all 4 directions come here and brings you many types of gifts. Clothes, weapons which are priceless, come here. Many of your Sikhs come here to you with gifts. No task of yours is stuck here. What will happen by going to the Dakhan?” Bhai Ram Singh ji was blessed by Guru ji. He heard Guru ji’s words and got worried as well. His brother Bhai Fateh Singh ji, he wanted to leave him home. Both didn’t want to go to the Dakhan. Bhai Dal Singh and all of the Brars were afraid to go far. Guru ji had two Divaans: Bhai Divaan Singh ji Darbari and Bhai Gharbari Singh ji. They felt worried as well. It was like the wind blowing the leaves of the Pippal tree; that’s how their hearts trembled. Many other Singhs sitting there didn’t want to go far from there. They lost their patience to go with Guru ji. They all made many types of excuses. They spoke of the pains of the Dakhan area: “Aurangzeb, the enemy, lives in the Dakhan now. His army has been fighting wars, where his army is being destroyed. He is really corrupt who is our big enemy. He always has hatred in his heart towards us. The fool became the enemy of the 9th Guru. The sinner was jealous of him. He killed his own father and had no attachment towards his brothers while killing them. He had no respect for saints or sadhoos. He punished and killed them. You caused him a lot of damage. You destroyed Lakhs of his armies. He spent Lakhs of money on the battles. He destroyed his honour by taking false oaths. He always wished to capture you. You know all of this. Why do you want to go close to him? The great fool will disrespect you again. He has Lakhs of armies that can attack. We won’t have any forts to fight from. We have no place to stay. The fool is a big enemy. He is the enemy of the saints. The Turk has a mind of his own. It is better to stay here, Prabhoo ji. Why do you wish to go to the Dakhan?” Guru ji spoke for all to hear: “Akaal Purakh is always by my side. Why would I leave my courage for any reason? We will travel to the different lands and see them. You should see the new lands. You have never left this area. I am not afraid of Aurangzeb. Let’s go to the Dakhan and complete the tasks. I need to fix a lot of things. The kingdom and wealth of that area, I will give it all to you. I will give you what you ask for. Why are you only attached to your one Desh and your one home? Why do you only like this area? With me, wherever we will live, you will be really happy and peaceful. We will take the rule from the Turks. I will make you rule the kingdom of Delhi. Don’t be in doubt. Have faith. Attach yourself to the True Prabhoo. The Khalsa will grow by the day. The Khalsa will be deserving of ruling the whole world. Where will the Nauranga keep his stability? He can’t use his power on me. His ancestors, where are they? Shah Jahan and Jahangir did not last. Akbar died and so did Hamayun. Babar and his elders died. Believe my words, Aurangzeb will not remain! Come with me to the Dakhan. If you go with me and be in my company, it will be good for you. Whatever wish you have in your mind, they will all be fulfilled from the Guru’s home. If your wisdom is weak and you don’t go, it won’t be in your best interests. I have told you the way. Gain or loss is there in front of you. You can get everything from the Guru. You can live there or live here after.” Guru ji said this to all. Some of them had some patience but didn’t say anything in front of Guru ji. They were attached to their families. The love of the family is a rope that this mind is sewn to. The knot is strong. How can it be separated? They said: “alright we will go,” but their faces were depressed. The Brar employees backed down, saying: “we won’t be able to go over there.” Many others went to their own homes. Nobody wanted to go with Guru ji. They said: “Dakhan is too far. Will we die or live? We don’t know what will happen. We will be separated from our families. We won’t know of their well being or pains. We won’t be able to see them again, we don’t know. Going with the Guru is hard for us.” They thought of many things in their minds. They didn’t say anything to Guru ji. They showed fake love to Guru ji. How would this love last? Bhai Ram Singh ji folded his hands and said: “my brother, Fateh Singh, I will send him home. I will go with you. Wherever you go, I will go with you.” Bhai Dal Singh ji said the same thing. They were afraid of Guru ji and pretended to obey him. He said: “we can’t refuse the Master but nobody wants to go with Guru ji either.” They thought of many things in their minds. They really didn’t want to go with Guru ji. They couldn’t leave Guru ji and they couldn’t be separated from their families. They were in a deep dilemma.
The wife of Aurangzeb died (a long time ago). She was the daughter of the Raja of Chamba in her last life. When Guru ji went to Rewalsar, she had come to meet Guru ji there. She was really wise. Prabhoo ji blessed her again: “you have been impure up till now. You will leave this body and be settled in Sikh Dalla’s home. You will earn Satsangat and Seva there. You will be pure then. I will save you then by blessing you. I will come to your home.” That girl was doing Seva since then. She ate the Seet Prashaad of Guru ji everyday. Her heart was really pure. She bowed to Guru ji’s feet and said: “I remember my previous birth. I have been serving the Satsangat. I don’t want to be born again. Prabhoo ji, Master of the world, please say this.” Guru ji said: “you are young. You still have a long life to live. You will be happy with Dal Singh. You will get what you want.” She heard this and had a deep love for Guru ji’s feet in her heart. She folded her hands and bowed. Her wishes were all fulfilled.
In this way, Satguru ji made preparations to leave. He wanted to go to the Dakhan. I (Bhai Ram Koer ji) was with Guru ji. I wanted to go with him. I wanted to do his Darshan all the time. Some people went back to their own homes. Some made some lies and went back home. Some stayed with Guru ji who were pure. They took Guru ji’s love of the feet. There were three types of Sikhs then. Some took advantages and some lost everything. Some left the attachments of their homes and went with Guru ji. They were complete and passed.
Since Sodhi Abhai Ram ji’s sons were killed in the Mela, he was in deep sorrow. He didn’t stay home. He came to stay with Prabhoo ji. He brought many Dewanas with him. Guru ji kept them all with respect: “come Abhai Singh, oh wise one.” Guru Har Rai ji had once said: “Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji’s ship has broke.” He thought of the future and said: “the 10th Guru will have a lot of Sikhs. He will collect the broken ship again. They will all meet with faith and be saved. They will then be really strong and great. If anyone comes to meet him, he will include them in his Panth. The kingdom, radiance and wealth will grow. Everyone will obey the Panth. The ship will be one again.” Satguru ji spent a lot of money for Abhai Singh. He gave him a huge salary. Many other Dewanas that came with him, they had a lot of Langar to eat. When he heard about going to the Dakhan, he met with the Dewanas to discuss this. They said: “it is not right for you to go. It’s good to eat less and stay in the home. What will we get by going to the Dakhan? It is really far from here. We won’t get any news of you from there.”
One day Satguru ji spoke to convince Abhai Singh ji a lot: “come with me and you will get everything you wish for. Many will worship your feet. We will travel to many other lands. The praise will grow by the day. Your Sikh Sangat will grow a lot.” Sodhi Abhai Singh ji said: “that is good. I will go with you.” He decided to go after saying that. When he came back to his Dhera, the Dewanas all manipulated him and said to him: “if you stay, it will be joy. If you go, it will be pain. Why do you want to go so far away?” The Dewanas convinced Sodhi Abhai Singh to run away that night. They took some of the Brars with them. All of the Dewanas ran away. They ran away at night. Nobody stayed. Somebody came to Guru ji and said: “the unwise Dewanas have all ran away, taking many with them.”
1-33 Dalla Runs Away/ The Jyotishi of Nauhar
When Bhai Dal Singh ji came and sat near Guru ji, Guru ji said to him: “get ready! Let’s go to the Dakhan.” Bhai Dal Singh folded his hands and said: “my home and my area, my jungle, there will be nobody to protect it. When I leave my home, who will establish my village?” Guru ji said: “your village, your jungle and your body; they will all cease to exist one day. Don’t look for their stability. They are like quick-ending bubbles during the rains. Just as the river flows, the lake stills filled, even though the water keeps moving; that is how the world is. The jungles and village will continue to be protected and established. Lakhs of people will be born to take care of it. Why are you getting caught into the noose of attachments? You are seeing your relatives and family members. You are attached to them. I will give you the kingdom of the whole Desh. Many cities and cultures will be under your command. The wealth of the country will be yours. You wanted a place in my realm. You kept asking me for it. Why are you in doubt because of attachment? You want to leave me here. How will you stay with me there? Get ready and come to the Dakhan with me.” Bhai Dal Singh spoke with fear: “sat bachan – as you say. It is good.” In his heart, he wanted to cheat the Guru.
Bhai Ram Singh ji’s story was the same. He got ready with fear. Guru ji told everyone of his travels to the Dakhan. Everyone slept the night. Guru ji woke up at Amritvela and bathed. He wore his clothes and weapons. He commanded his horse to be saddle. He commanded everyone to saddle up and prepare to leave. The servants quickly saddled the horse. The food and items of need were packed. The Khalsa all got ready as well. About 2,200 mounted Singhs were ready to go. There were foot soldiers and mounted Singhs. They all tied their kumerkassas and prepared their bows and rifles. Bhai Dal Singh and Bhai Ram Singh got ready. The Prabhoo’s blessings were over them. Guru ji mounted his horse. The kumerkassas were all tied by everyone. They were ready to leave with the Prabhoo [It was Kathak Suddhi 5th when Guru ji did the Ardaas to leave. Guru ji stayed in Damdama Sahib for about 2 years]. Sri Prabhoo ji left Damdama Sahib. The dust flew to the skies as the army left. The Nagaras, Dhonsas and Ransinghas sounded. The Rajas trembled in fear, saying: “we hope the Prabhoo doesn’t come to us to loot us.” Guru ji was radiant on his horse with his army, looking like Ram Chander ji going to the Dakhan. Guru ji travelled 7 Kos and came to a village named Keval. That was the first camp. Guru ji came with peace. Wood and grass were collected. Everyone rested and ate food. The saddles were taken off. Everyone slept the night.
In the morning, everyone got ready to leave. The Master mounted his horse and left. They then went to the Marwar Desh. Guru ji wanted to go through that area. They came to Jhorri Village. They all rested the afternoon there and set off again. They travelled 18 Kos to Jhanda Village. Everyone got tired and rested the night. In the morning, the Aruna (the redness before sunrise) time came. The horses were saddled and the reins were tied up. Satguru ji got ready and mounted his horse. The Nagaras and conches sounded. They all travelled 12 Kos and came to Sarsa Village. Prabhoo ji and the whole Dal set up camp. The whole Vaheer met here. Bhai Param Singh ji and Bhai Dharam Singh ji, the two brothers, came from the village Roopa. They would prepare a new bed for Guru ji. They would tie up the new bed and bring it. They would prepare for Guru ji to sleep on it at night. Satguru ji stayed in Sarsa for some time. Guru ji saw a huge kiln of bricks. Guru ji climbed the kiln and said to Dal Singh: “let me show you the Desh which I want to give to you. This will be your kingdom. Come up and see your Desh. Make your rule and wealth grow.” Bhai Dal Singh spoke with a drooped and depressed face: “when we leave, we will see it.” His patience was gone. He was attached to his home and village. Prabhoo ji came down from the kiln and sat on his bed. Everyone else sat close to Guru ji. Bhai Ram Singh folded his hands and spoke about his brother, Fateh Singh: “give him blessings so he can go home. He will do all the work of the home.” Guru ji said: “I know everything. You spoke words of deceit. I won’t let Fateh Singh go nor will I let you go home. What shall I say? Send him off then, if you wish. It is not good for you to lie.” Bhai Ram Singh said: “Prabhoo ji, please don’t have anger in your heart. Without the men, the house cannot run.” After saying this, he sent his brother, Bhai Fateh Singh, off back to their home. The weak people lost their patience. The day was spent eating food. In the evening, it got dark.
Bhai Dal Singh took off his two bracelets and left them in Guru ji’s place. He placed the beautiful Khanda he was given as well. He placed it close his bed. When it was really dark, Bhai Dal Singh got ready to run away. He did the Parkarma of Guru ji’s tent. He did it twice and lost his patience to do more. He folded his hands and bowed form the outside. The Divaans, Bhai Darbari Singh ji and Bhai Gharbari Singh ji also got ready to leave. They all left together. Many Brars came with them. They brought a Sodhi with them.
At Amritvela, Guru ji woke up and did his daily cleansing routines, followed by bathing. After about two and a half hours, he wore all his clothes and weapons. Guru ji then said to his Servant Singh: “bring Dal Singh here. Tell him to come here and sit with me.” There was a Benawa Fakir that lived in the Dal. He wanted Guru ji’s Darshan. He wanted Bibek. While Dal Singh was doing the Parkarma of Guru ji’s tent and getting ready to run away, the Fakir was watching him carefully. He came to Guru ji and said: “where is the Darbari? Where is the Gharbari? Where is the Dalla? The one who was “Nirmalla”- pure, has became “malla” – dirty. With you, there is only Allah hi Allah. They called themselves Sikhs but they were only corrupt people in disguise. They did not give you company to the end. In the same way, Dalla was a liar and did an act of deception. With you, there is only Allah hi Allah. The false cannot stay in front of the truth. They were tied in the attachment of their sons, relatives and women. Dalla ran away and couldn’t tolerate your scale. With you, there is only Allah hi Allah.” Guru ji heard this and said: “go, oh Dalla! He ran away with a trembling heart. You begged me for a place near me. What problem were you faced with?” Prabhoo ji looked into one direction and said: “who is getting ready in this direction?” There was a Singh from Majha who took Afeem there. He heard this and said: “all of the Malvais have run away. The weak Majhails have stayed.” Guru ji said: “the Majhails are not weak. The people of Desh Malva will be the grooms.” Guru ji then got ready to leave. The horses were saddled. Guru ji’s horse came and everyone travelled on. They travelled for 12 Kos and came to a huge city named Nauhar. The army and the Vaheer set up camp.
Satguru ji sat down casually. One Singh was sent into the city with instructions: “there is a Brahmin here named Kishan Lal. Go and call him. I have some work with him. He is an expert in Jyotish Vidhya. Go to the east side of the city and find his home.” The Sikh went right away. He found the Jyotishi and brought him to Guru ji. The Jyotishi gave his blessings and sat down. He met Guru ji as he had met him before. Satguru ji said: “understand what is my question. Why I called you, tell me?” The Brahmin looked at the Lagan and analysed it. He calculated which was the strong planet and which was the weak planet. He understood the question without being told. He said to Satguru ji: “the wish that you have: is to meet the Turk Emperor.” Guru ji said: “good! Will I meet him or not, with peace?” The Brahmin looked at his calculation. He looked at the Lagans and the planets. He said: “Sri Guru ji, you won’t meet him. You won’t reach his home. He will die before you get there. His son will be humble though. He will meet with you. This is what I see.” Satguru ji heard the true words of the Brahmin. Guru ji was happy and blessed the Brahmin. Guru ji was testing the Brahmin’s Vidya and then blessed him with bliss. The Brahmin understood Guru ji’s glory and wanted to grab Guru ji’s feet. Sri Prabhoo ji stopped him from bowing. The Brahmin said with his hands folded: “you gave me your Darshan for an hour and blessed me with bliss and Mukti. Where you stayed for years and months; thousands of wise people must be blessed there.” Guru ji heard this and said: “there was no faith there, that’s why only a few were blessed. From this conversation, listen to a story: a merchant had a ship filled with a lot of merchandise. He travelled to an island that had no cows or buffaloes. The merchant had one cow with him on the ship to drink milk from. He started his business on the island. There, he became friends with another merchant. The merchant made food in his home. He invited him with respect and gave him food. On another day, the travelling merchant invited his friend to his ship and gave him kheer to eat. He had never eaten kheer before and was surprised. He said: “what is this? Give me this so I can eat it everyday. Eating this, it made my heart happy.” The merchant gave him the cow and said: “it gives milk.” After giving the cow, the merchant left on his ship. He came back to his Desh.
The other merchant took the cow to his home. Making the cow stand, he left a calf with it. When the calf suckled on the nipple of the cow, the cow urinated. The merchant took the urine and put it in a pot. The merchant boiled the urine in rice. When he ate it, it was very bitter. He said: “I’ve been cheated by the merchant!” That’s how the people lived with me. They didn’t understand the technique that would have made their wisdom illuminate. They didn’t take the milk. They took the urine. They blamed me for their faults. When the merchant met a wise person, he then understood how to milk the cow. Only a few take on the good wisdom. The rest are deserving of only urine.” The Brahmin heard this and was in bliss. He said: “Dhan Dhan Satguru.” He received the Gyaan in a little time of the Aatam Gyaan. He went home and praised the glory of the Guru.
1-34 Making Dead Pigeons Alive Again/ Param Singh and Dharam Singh Blessed
Sri Satguru ji, the complete and omnipotent Purakh, gave the Brahmin Dinars. He gave him Gurmat. The Brahmin took leave and went back to the city. When it was 3 pm, it was the time for Shaheedi Degh. Sukha and Afeem were taken. Guru ji bathed and did his Kanga in his Kesh. He tied his Joora and ran his beautiful Kanga through his beard. Guru ji tied his Dumaalaa, one pech at a time. The gold and jewels on his Dastaar Kalgi Jigha shined brightly. He wore a Jama made of fine silk. The shape of his body could be seen through the Chola. He wore a big Kharag around his shoulder. The sword was very sharp and had a hilt made of gold. His quiver was filled with arrows. He tied it around his waist. He picked up a fierce bow in his hand. His horse was ready.
To see the city of Nauhar, Satguru ji got ready. Many Singhs went with Guru ji on foot. The Master entered the city. Inside the city was a big square. The Supreme Sodhi came there. There were steps around the square. Guru ji went up the steps with his horse. He came on top of the high place and started to look far into the distance. One servant holding the Surahi of Guru ji ran up the steps as well. He wanted to reach Guru ji quickly but stepped on a pigeon and killed it by accident. Some men were sitting there and got angry at this event: “what did you do? Many pigeons live in the square. You didn’t look where you were stepping and killed the pigeon.” Satguru ji saw this and spoke up: “what happened? Every body will die one day. So what if one died? Why are you getting angry at what was supposed to happen?” The men spoke in anger: “it’s nice you came! Then kill all of them!” Satguru ji heard this and said: “if this is in your minds, then all of the pigeons will die.” As soon as Guru ji said this, all of the pigeons fell and died. Thousands of pigeons were there. They all died. The men were amazed to see this. They said: “this is a very powerful person. He killed all of the pigeons with one word.” They all got up and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. They said: “forgive our mistake. We spoke harsh words. We didn’t know of your greatness. We now know after you said what you said. Please make the dead pigeons alive again. We won’t make the same mistake again. We won’t disrespect you again.” Guru ji became compassionate and said: “put seeds in front of them. They will wake up.” Seeds were put out. The pigeons woke up and began to eat the seeds. They all pecked at the seeds and ate them. The people were amazed to see this. The pigeon that died by the Sikh’s foot, that one didn’t wake up. It was still dead. Everyone said: “why did you not bless this one?” The Singhs also said: “make this one alive too.” Prabhoo ji said: “put seeds in front of it.” The Sikhs put seeds of lentils and millet in front of the dead one as well. The dead pigeon woke up and ate the seeds. The people brought gifts and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. They said: “as we heard the praises of Guru ji, we are now doing your Darshan in the same way.” Guru ji stayed there for about an hour and then went to the Bazaar. He went to the biggest Bazaar. There were many rich merchants sitting there. Their shops had piles of golden Dinars. The Rajitpuns could not be counted, how many there were. There were many pearls and other gems. Everyone was happy to see the gold. Guru ji said to the Singhs: “Nauhar Guru ki Mauhar – Nauhar has the coins of the Guru; Singh Aavange jab lootengay – when the Singhs come, they will loot them all.” After saying this, Guru ji wandered the whole city. He then came back to his Dhera. That place is now known as Cheentalai. Guru ji and the army ate and slept the night.
The words that Guru ji said about looting Nauhar, they became true. I have heard about it from my elders. When it was 1811 (Vikram), the Khalsa casually came that way. They heard of the riches in Churoopur. Many Dals of the Khalsa came there to loot it. When they came close, they all heard that the water was salty and not drinkable. If you drank it, you would get diarrhea. A healthy human would become sick. The water around the city was bad. The Khalsa did not loot Churoopur and went back. They thought again and realised they were leaving empty-ended. They then went towards Nauhar. They waged battles with their rifles. They attacked the big market and looted it. They took all of the golden coins. They were satiated and then left. They bought many horses and rode them. Many Singhs became Sardaars at that time. They looted the villages and killed the (corrupt) Turks. The words of the Guru became true. I heard about all this from the elder Singhs.
Guru ji set up the Dhera at Cheentalai. Sri Prabhoo ji spent the night there. At Amritvela, Guru ji bathed and got ready. He mounted his horses and departed. The Khalsa Dal was with him. After travelling 18 Kos, they came to the village Bhaadra. The tired Vaheer arrived there. They collected grass and grains and fed the animals. The horses rested and were massaged. The people of the area brought sweets, ghee and milk. Satguru ji noticed everyone was tired. He opened up the treasury as well. Langar was made and everyone ate till satiation. Everyone rested the night. In the morning, preparations to leave were made.
Bhai Param Singh ji and Bhai Dharam Singh ji did a lot of Seva. Guru ji was really happy with them. They would arrive before Satguru ji, wherever he went. They walked wherever they went. They would make a new bed for Guru ji every day. Guru ji gave the brothers two horses and weapons. They Singhs took the gifts. Guru ji travelled ahead. The people were tired so they travelled less. They went 7 Kos to a village called Saheva. The Dhera was set up there. Bhai Param Singh ji took his weapons and picked them on his head. The brothers held the reins of the horses and walked with them. They didn’t want to ride the horses. They saw the gifts of the Guru as too sacred. They wanted to respect them. The Sikhs told Prabhoo ji: “they don’t ride their horses. They walk along with them. They have tied all the weapons and picked them up on their heads. They are doing the things backwards. They are now more in pain than before.” Satguru ji called the brothers to him and asked: “what is this that you are doing? You don’t ride the horses nor do you fasten the weapons to your body. You pick up the weapons on your heads and walk with your horses. I gave you horses so you don’t have to walk. You didn’t make your life easier. What is the reason for this?” The brothers folded their hands and said: “your gifts are too sacred. If we don’t respect them then it will be bad. We see them as worship-worthy. We bow to them and see them as you.” Guru ji was really happy. He said: “your tongue will be your sword. Wherever your word comes out, it will cut faster than a sword.” Guru ji gave them boons and respected the two brothers. He had them sit close to him.
There was a Jandh tree in front. There was a Pippal coming out of the Jandh. Prabhoo ji saw this and said: “when this Pippal grows and fully takes over the Jandh; covering everything; then my Khalsa will grow. My Khalsa is just crawling right now. When it grows, it will kill the Turks.” The Khalsa heard this and bowed their heads, saying: “oh Sri Guru Master, you are Dhan!”
1-35 Bhai Ram Singh Runs Away
After eating, Guru ji went to sleep in peace. In the morning, everyone got ready. Satguru ji mounted his horse and led the way forward. As Guru ji travelled a little, the Singhs followed. Bhai Ram Singh ji Bhagtoo was moving around to avoid everyone’s glance. He was planning on not going along. When Guru ji went a little far, Bhai Ram Singh mounted his horse and turned back towards his home. One Singh saw him leaving and came to Prabhoo ji to tell him: “Ram Singh Bhai ran away. He didn’t come to meet you.” Prabhoo ji heard this and stopped his horse. He sent a Sikh, saying: “go and give him my sake.” The Singh ran after Bhai Ram Singh. He caught up to him and said: “Ram Singh, stop! Prabhoo ji sent me and told me to tell you not to cross these three lines I made in front of you. This is his honour with mind, word and action. Come with Guru ji and enjoy all of the joys. If you were going to leave, why did you not take his leave with permission? It is not good to run away like this. When Guru ji heard of this, he didn’t move forward. He stopped his horse.” Bhai Ram Singh said: “it does not work for me to go to the Dakhan. I have many tasks in my home. Who will do all my things? I am not going nor am I going to meet Guru ji. I will bow from here and leave.” Bhai Ram Singh crossed the three lines made by the Singh. The Singh was surprised to see this. He came back and told Prabhoo ji: “he crossed the lines and left. He wanted to go home. He lost the patience of his heart. He was not going to stop. He’s not coming back.” Satguru ji gave the Singh a handkerchief and said: “put this in front of his horse and say this is the Guru’s Pugri. Don’t cross this. It is not good for you.” The Singh took the handkerchief and rode back to Bhai Ram Singh. He met Bhai Ram Singh and put the handkerchief in front of Ram Singh’s horse and said: “this is the Guru’s Pugh. Don’t cross it to leave. Go back and meet him. There is good for you in this.” Bhai Ram Singh spoke: “I am going back. I can’t go to Guru ji now. I am determined to leave. Dakhan Desh is too far from my home. Nobody will know about the good and bad of my home if I go to the Dakhan. I can’t leave home. I can’t come in front of Guru ji.” Ram Singh crossed the handkerchief. Ram Singh destroyed his roots and branches all at once. The Singh came back to Guru ji and said: “he said he can’t leave his home. He’s not coming.” Prabhoo ji heard this and spoke in anger: “the home this unwise person can’t leave; for one month he will bang his head against the walls of his home. He will then leave his home along with his body. Dalla and the others that ran away; they will all be captured by the Jumms. Whoever has left me, the Jumms will quickly grab them.” Guru ji cursed them all and travelled on. [What seemed as a curse, was in fact their own Karma. Guru ji would have washed their Karma if they had obeyed. Many did obey. Their Karma was cleared, being in the presence of the Master, the Hazoor] The ones that turned back, all faced problems.
When Ram Singh came back, he became crazy when he came close to his home. His brother, Fateh Singh, had to take him off of his horse. He took him inside the home. Ram Singh began to beat his head against the walls. The rest of the family tried to stop him. Bhai Dalla also faced problems. He became ill and weak. The others that came with him, leaving Guru ji; they were all pressed under some other problem. After one month, Ram Singh suffered and died. Bhai Dalla also suffered pain and died in regret. When Bhai Dalla died, bandits and dacoits heard of his death and came to loot his land. He had two grandsons who were busy playing. One was running with a spinning wheel pin. The other ran after to catch him. The first one fell and stabbed himself by accident in the heart with the pin. He died right away. The other grandson died from Seetala. His whole family was destroyed. Bhai Dalla had no surviving generation. Whoever ran away without obeying Guru ji, all faced problems that were in their Karma, right away. Guru ji said the curse and continued on his travels.
Guru ji arrived in Madhu Singhanay. He set up a Dhera after travelling 18 Kos. He came there in the evening. Guru ji thought to himself: “Param Singh and Dharam Singh, how will they come and make a new bed tonight? I want to see how they earn their determination. The day is almost done. There’s no way they will be able to make it today.” The two brothers applied their effort to the best of their abilities. They cut two trumps quickly. They planted them where Guru ji was going to sleep. They took a thick rope and tied the trumps. They created a bed in this way. They covered the top with a sheet. They covered the intricate rope arrangement with thick pillows and sheets. They went to Guru ji and said: “your bed is ready, Prabhoo ji. Please rest there.” Guru ji was surprised to hear this. Guru ji sat on his bed and looked at it. He put his hand on the bottom, while saying: “how did you tie this new one?” He touched the bottom and noticed that it was tied with thick rope instead of the binding. The legs were trunks. Prabhoo ji was really happy. He called the brothers and gave them many blessings. He said: “you earned complete Sikhi. Go back now to your homes. Live there with joy. You will defeat your enemies without weapons. You will never need to worry nor be afraid of anyone.” Guru ji ate and slept the night.
Guru ji woke at Amritvela, cleansed and bathed. Guru ji dressed with his clothes and weapons. Guru ji sent Bhai Param Singh ji and Bhai Dharam Singh ji back to their homes. His command could not be disobeyed. They folded their hands and said: “please be our protector in this world and in the next. May our heart be connected to your feet forever. See us as yours and never forget us. See us as the servant of your servants.” They bowed and went back to their homes. Guru ji was in Madhu Singhanay. Prabhoo ji left the place and travelled on. The Singhs and the Vaheer followed. After travelling 18 Kos, Pushkar Teerath was where Prabhoo ji arrived. Guru ji got off his horse and set up the Dhera. The Vaheer was tired as they came. Prabhoo ji said: “set up camp here and rest. You are tired so rest.” At night they all ate and slept.
In the morning, Guru ji bathed and got ready. A Brahmin named Chetan came to meet Guru ji. He gave the Ashirwad and sat down. Guru ji gave him a lot of donations. He gave him fine clothes, Dinars and a horse. Where Sri Baba Guru Nanak Dev ji stayed, Guru Gobind Singh ji bathed at the same Ghatt. He sat there with the Singhs and told everyone of the Parsang of the area: “Sri Baba ji sat here while travelling here, casually. Gorakh came here with his Sidhs. They came and said: “Adesh, Adesh.” They discussed Yog. Guru ji answered their questions, as required. The Sidhs heard the responses and bowed with their hands folded. Gorakh, Bharthri and Gopi Chand bowed. Mangal and the others praised Guru ji: “Sri Baba, you are the greatest for saving us.”
As Guru ji was speaking, many people came to meet him. Brahmins, Baaniyas and others came. They all came with Chetan Brahmin. They all bowed as they came with their families. They asked: “what is your caste? These people who are with you, they keep their hair. What is their caste? Their form is new to us. That’s why we are asking. They don’t look like Hindus or Turks. Hindus and Turks don’t follow this form.” Guru ji heard this and said: “the Khalsa has come to the world as the third. It is separate and independent from the Hindu and the Turk. It is the servant of Sri Akaal ji. This is only the seed I have shown you. They will kill the Turks and take the whole kingdom. It will be the strongest and overpower all. It is the most beautiful form. It will carry weapons and destroy the terrorizing enemies.” Everyone heard this and were amazed. They said: “the omnipotent Guru has made this new path.”
Prabhoo ji got up and took Chetan with him. He began to tour the Teerath. Chetan explained the place to Guru ji. He showed Guru ji the other side of the Teerath, where there was a cave. A Naag lived in that cave. Guru ji saw the whole place and Chetan spoke the history of the area: “Brahma did a Yagna here. Rudra came here in a very fierce form. He brought his Khappar bowl to beg here. Brahma ji didn’t know who it was and he scolded Shiva. He told him to go away: “you have a scary form and have caused a bad omen. Such forms aren’t good for Yagnas.” Shiva took his skull bowl and broke it. There were many skulls around the Yagna area then. Brahma saw his radiance and realised who it was. He praised Shiva in a good tradition.”
I have stated the Prasang in short. The history is very long and I am afraid that the Granth will become very big. I won’t say it here. The listeners already know of the history of Pushkar. Listen oh wise ones, to the Katha of the Guru. Whatever is left to write, I will tell you. Your wishes will be fulfilled. The love of Kavi Santokh Singh’s heart is the Katha of the Guru. I will state the Katha in a beautiful tradition. The Guru has fulfilled my wish. The Guru has been generous and graceful with me. I bow to his feet.
