1-26 Making it Rain/ Removing the Fever
The rains stopped. It didn’t rain for many days. The fields began to dry out. The crops dried up. Not one field survived. The people were in pain and anxious. There was a drought. They said: “what will happen to us? How will we live without food?” The farmers were in pain. They gathered and sat in regret. Many sat in the villages in groups, worrying. They discussed: “Satguru ji is with us. He can fulfill our wishes. He fulfills everyone’s wishes. The whole Desh should go to him. Let’s ask him to make it rain. He can give us life again.” The Sangat got together and decided to go to Guru ji. The wise Sikhs led them.
The different Sangats came and set up Dheras in Damdama Sahib. People from all around the land gathered. They were afraid of the drought. They came and did Guru ji’s Parkarma. They bowed. Some sat and some stood. The Mevra did the Ardaas of all: “Prabhoo ji, save the world. There is not one cloud in the sky. The fields of the whole Desh are drying up. If the crops all die, there is no hope for these people to survive. See them as your own Sangat and save them. Say the words and make it rain.” Satguru ji heard this and got angry. He looked towards Bhai Dalla ji and said: “get up and hit Inder with your shoes! He will make it rain right away.” Bhai Dalla ji had faith on Guru ji’s words. He got up and looked towards the sky. He took his shoe and threw it to the sky 7 times. He swore many times: “obey the command and make it rain! We obey the complete Guru! In the Trilok, who is it that is not afraid of the Satguru? Krishan himself fought on the battlefield and was victorious. Guru ji made his servants fight and win. Don’t delay. Make it rain right away.” Inder got scared seeing the radiance of the Prabhoo. As Bhai Dalla ji spoke, the clouds came and began to drop the rains. Sri Guru ji saw this and laughed out loud, a lot. He said a Salok regarding this at that time. Thousands saw this drama and heard the radiance of the Shabad (of Guru Nanak Dev ji):
Salok M:1..
In the Fear (of Prabhoo), the wind always blow. In the Fear (of Prabhoo), thousands of rivers flow.
In the Fear (of Prabhoo), fire is forced to labor. In the Fear (of Prabhoo), the earth is crushed under its burden.
In the Fear (of Prabhoo), Inder moves with a weight on his head. In the Fear (of Prabhoo), the Dharmaraj stands at His Door.
In the Fear (of Prabhoo), is the sun, and in the Fear (of Prabhoo), is the moon. They travel millions of miles, endlessly.
In the Fear (of Prabhoo), are the Sidhs, Buddhas (wise ones), Devatas and the Naths. In the Fear (of Prabhoo), the Akaashic ethers are stretched across the sky.
In the Fear (of Prabhoo), the fighters and the most powerful warriors exist. In the Fear (of Prabhoo), many come and go.
Upon all, the inscription of fear is inscribed upon their heads. O Nanak, the Fearless Lord, the Formless Lord, the True Lord, is One. ||1||
(SGGS 464)
Guru ji made everyone hear this Salok. Everyone saw this Salok as good. A lot of rain came. Everyone went to their homes. They praised Guru ji’s glories: “foolish are those who do not follow him and believe him.” The whole land flourished. The fields were green again. They were flourishing. Everyone was happy to see this. Many types of crops grew. Guru ji’s praises grew.
Guru ji went hunting for many excuses (to save many life forms). He would go far to see the land. Guru ji travelled all over the Malva area. He looked at all the people of the area and analyzed them. One day Guru ji was seated and spoke: “the people of this Desh are compassionate but the essence of Sikhi is greater than great. The only fault the people of this area have is that they speak lies a lot. They sell their daughter. There will be a lot of food here in the future. There will be no shortage but these people still won’t be satiated. Their minds are fragile. The desire of money, drenches their minds. They don’t obey and their wisdom is always dead. The fools don’t know what is good for them. Khaan ko Bhes – they dress to eat, Sikhi ko pardesh – Sikhi is away from them, matlab paatshahi – their aim is to rule, Raaj bin pahi – they are without kingdoms.”
There was a time when an illness spread throughout the land. Fever hit everyone. Everyone was in pain. Their bodies shivered with fever. Their faces went pale. They were in pain, day and night. They couldn’t eat or drink water. They laid down, weak. Bhai Dalla ji came to Guru ji and told him of the fever that spread: “Maharaj, tell us of a solution. See us as your own and destroy the fevers. We have no other saviour other than you. We seek your support.” Guru ji heard his request and became compassionate. He said: “do this right away: everyone keep your hair and recite Gurbani everyday. The fever will leave the land when you follow the Gurmat way.” Bhai Dalla ji heard this and told everyone. Everyone began to keep their hair and recite Gurbani. They left their villages and began to study at Damdama Sahib. Guru ji said: “you will be in joy. Construct a Dharmsala in your villages. Have the Sikh Sangat sit there. Have love in your hearts and do Seva. Meet with the Satsangat. Love the Gurbani and recite it. You will be in joy. You won’t have the fever then. Your sorrows and pains will be destroyed.” Everyone was afraid and obeyed. They did what Guru ji said. They had compassion and Dharma. They recited Bani. Sikhi spread in the land at a grand level.
The Sooba of Sirhind understood that Guru ji was in Sabo ki Talwandi. He was upset and wrote a letter to show off his power. The letter was sent to Bhai Dalla ji. The messenger came to Bhai Dalla ji’s fort. Satguru ji sensed the whole situation. A Sikh was sent by Guru ji with instructions: “secretly go to the fort and listen to what the letter says. Tell me what Dalla says after reading the letter. Is he fearless or is he scared with the letter?” The Sikh went to the fort and roamed around. Bhai Dalla ji listened to the letter: “why do you want what is bad for you? You are keeping the enemy of the Emperor in your home. You still have time to do good. Capture the Guru and surrender him to us. We will send a huge army. You can meet them and have the Guru captured. Otherwise, you will be punished. We won’t let you live there anymore with joy. We will loot your village and ruin it. We will come all of a sudden and catch you all.” Bhai Dalla ji heard this and had a response written: “I am not afraid. You want to scare me. The army that you send, we will fight it. We will kill them and loot them. We will go on ahead. We will go further into the jungle where there is no water. You can’t do anything there. My head is with the Guru. I will not give you the Guru in any way. I will keep him with my Pranas.” Bhai Dala ji had the response written. It was sent to Wajeeda quickly. The whole discussion of the two lands, the Sikh heard it all. He came back to Satguru ji and told him everything. Guru ji was happy to hear this.
Some more days passed. Satguru ji lived there. The Sangat from far away came. They bowed their heads to Prabhoo ji’s feet, bringing many types of gifts. Their wishes were fulfilled. At night, 10 Singhs stood guard. They stood near Guru ji’s bed, awake. One day, performers came and set up their drama. They sang and danced, the men and women. The Sikhs who kept guard said to each other: “Guru ji is under the spell of sleep. Let’s quickly go and see the drama. What’s the worst that could happen till then? We will come back before Satguru ji wakes up and stand here as we did before.” Five Sikhs went but the other five stayed out of fear. The five Sikhs went to see the drama. When they saw the drama, they got scared and said to each other: “what did we get coming here? Sri Prabhoo ji will be very mad. Why should we be guilty for no reason? Let’s quickly go back.” They quickly all came back. They were scared and stood guard again. Guru ji was sleeping but he is always awake. Nothing is hidden from him. The Sikhs came back with fear. The ones that didn’t go, they regretted and said: “look, they went and came back with joy. We should have gone to see the drama too. What did we get by standing here? We should have seen the drama. We wasted our time here. Guru ji is still sleeping.” The five that stayed were in regret.
In the morning, the guard Sikhs went to their places. Guru ji got up and bathed. He did his morning routine. When the Divaan was in session, everyone was called by Guru ji and asked: “where did you go at night? What did you say to each other? Tell me the truth. I am the witness of all.” Both parties spoke the truth. Whatever happened and whatever they said; they said it all. Sri Guru ji heard everything and said to all: “the ones who were close to me were far away. The ones who were far, were close to me. The ones who went away, their minds were with me, because of fear. They ones who were scared and stayed, their minds were in the drama.” Everyone heard this and understood the truth, saying: “Dhan Dhan Satguru, the mine of virtues.”
1-27 Making it Rain and Making it Stop/ Bhai Jhoolan Singh
It rained and then the clouds went. The fields became ripe. Many months passed and not a drop of rain fell. The ponds near the villages all dried up, where humans and animals drank from. Sri Guru ji heard about Bhai Dalla ji’s letter, what he wrote back to the Turks: “my life and death is with the Guru. If you send an army, we will fight a battle.” When the Singh told Guru ji this, the Master was really happy. When Bhai Dalla ji came to Guru ji, he bowed his head to Guru ji’s feet and sat down. Guru ji was happy and said: “you have many relatives with you in your army. The money I pay to my employees, they take it everyday. Just as you have your soldiers, do the math and list them on to the Guru’s salary. You can be paid everyday as well. Give your Brar relatives as well. Make everyone happy. If you have any other wish, I will grant it. Tell me what you need. Listen Dalla Brar ji, I am really happy with you. Whatever is in your heart, tell me. Ask for whatever you want.” Bhai Dalla ji folded his hands and said: “Paatshaah, we need water. Birds, animals and humans; without water, they are all anxious. If you are happy, make it rain now. Fill all of the ponds and lakes so everyone can be at peace.” Prabhoo ji heard this and said: “rain is not in my arm pit, that I can take it out and give to you. Ask for something else.” After this, everyone went quiet. After some time, Bhai Dalla ji went home.
The next day, Guru ji was paying all of his employees. The employees were taking their pays and counting it. Bhai Dalla ji came to Guru ji and bowed. He bowed his head and sat down. Everyone’s pay was calculated. One by one, everyone was paid. One came and one left. Prabhoo ji looked at Bhai Dalla ji and said: “take your pay, Dalla. Take whatever else you want for yourself as well.” Bhai Dalla ji folded his hands and said: “Paatshaah, make it rain. This is my wish. Everyone will be happy with this. I have no other wish than this. Your happiness will be over all. Make it rain on the earth.” Guru ji went quiet hearing this. Everyone wanted water as there was no water in the ponds. Bhai Dalla ji got up and went home. He was happy to do Guru ji’s Seva. The third day, Bhai Dalla ji came again. He bowed and sat near Guru ji. Guru ji was happy again because of what Bhai Dalla ji wrote back to the Turks. He was happy and wanted to give Bhai Dalla ji something. He really wanted to give him something. He said: “Dalla Brar, ask for what you want. Whatever you say, I will do.” Bhai Dalla ji said: “Sri Guru Prabhoo Paatshaa, the true King; make it rain. This is what everyone wants.” Sri Guru ji was happy. He smiled and said:
“Jatt da bol, Baaniyay da chup, Guru ka vaak, Brahman da saak – the saying of the Jatt, the quiet of the merchant, the word of the Guru, the relation of the Brahman.
These never go empty. What is in their mind, they will take. If the Jatt asks, the wall will have to give. Anyone else will obviously give. Go Dalla, don’t delay. Have all of the ponds and lakes cleaned. You will get a lot of rain because you asked over and over again.” Bhai Dalla ji got up in joy. He thought to himself: “Guru ji is happy with me.” The men and women were surprised, saying: “the clouds will come now! We don’t see any clouds right now though. There is a drought. No rain is falling. It will rain though.” They were all looking towards the sky. Many Dhols were gathered. They were played near the shores of the ponds. Men and women ran to the lakes and ponds. They gathered and cleaned the ponds. They gathered because of the playing of the dhols. As they finished cleaning, the wind blew from the east. The clouds came all of a sudden, like a parade of elephants. Within a half hour, the clouds came, making it dark. Lightening flashed. Big huge drops of rain fell. It started to rain a lot. Rivers of water flowed. The water came from high places to low places. The people ran home to protect themselves from the rain. They saw the rain fall and said: “Dhan is the Guru! They are fools who don’t believe in him.”
For three days and three nights it rained. The lightening flashed. It rained heavy for three days. Men and women got scared and worried. They forgot to eat or drink. The houses began to fall. The people kept repairing their homes. They came to Bhai Dalla ji and said: “please ask Guru ji that he made it rain for our joy. We are satiated now.” Bhai Dalla ji went to Guru ji. He folded his hands and bowed. He said: “that’s enough rain now. Please came it stop. There is only water everywhere. We don’t see the earth. We see more clouds. One cloud comes to rain and another one comes right behind it. This is all your blessing. People will remember this Katha of you for years to come. Please fulfill everyone’s wishes. There is nothing you can’t do. Brahma and others are under your command. Who has the power to reverse your command?” Prabhoo ji heard this and said: “throw your shoe 7 times towards the clouds by counting. It will stop raining right away. You along with others will be at ease.” Bhai Dalla ji got up and did what he was told. The clouds ripped and the sun came out. He saw the power of Guru ji’s words. everyone had faith. The faithful were happy. The praise of Guru ji was done in every home. It was like Raibel and jasmine blooming in every home.
There was a Singh named Bhai Jhoolan Singh ji. He held a Dutaara and wandered around. He played the Dutaara well. Mata Sundri ji’s maid heard him. She said to him: “why are you playing this over there? If you want to play it, come over here and play it.” Bhai Jhoolan Singh ji heard this and said: “is Mata ji saying this or are you saying this?” The maid said: “Mata ji isn’t saying this. I am. I won’t let her become angry though. I want this.” Bhai Jhoolan Singh ji came there. He tuned his Dutaara and played it. The maid told Mata Sundri ji: “there is a Singh playing the Dutaara.” Mata ji asked: “will he play a Shabad?” The maid said: “he doesn’t sing. He only plays the instrument.” The Singh played for a while and then got up to leave.
Guru ji was gone hunting during that time. He came back in the evening. Bhai Jhoolan Singh ji thought to himself as his honour awoke: “Manmukhs are better than me. If my sister or mother was here, would I have played the instrument there?” He felt ashamed and let his instrument go. He was upset and regretted: “why did I play this near the Guru’s home?” He took a sharp Kard and cut his Ling off and threw it. He took an oath to not speak again. He was quiet for the rest of his life. The Singhs saw his state and spoke to Guru ji: “Prabhoo ji, he has taken an oath to not speak. He is sitting down there. He is bleeding as he has cut his Indri off.” Guru ji said: “what did he achieve by doing this? The desire of the mind does not go away like this.” After a while, the wound of Bhai Jhoolan Singh ji was cured. He began to live in another place. He sat in a circular area, all alone. His mind was still. The people from the nearby villages came to serve him. They brought food for him. One day, the cows and buffaloes of the village were going to graze the fields. Jhoolan Singh signaled them not to go. He would hit them with his stick to push the cows back. People thought to themselves: “what is he doing? We don’t understand what he is saying.” The people took their cows anyways. As they went, an army came and looted the cows away. The farmers then understand what Akooaa (a person who doesn’t speak) was saying. They called him Akooaa. The people gathered and came to Jhoolan Singh ji. They bowed to his feet. Bhai Jhoolan Singh slapped his stomach like playing a Nagara. He signaled: “go and attack. You will win.” The people understood. They attacked the army and brought their cows back. Everyone called him Akooaa. They served him with devotion. Any new daughter-in-law that was married and brought to this village, Akooaa would go to see them. By the words of Guru ji, his desires did not extinguish. His desires stayed. How would they stop? He was complete in Sikhi though. Till today, his place is worshiped. People’s wishes are fulfilled there. In this way, I heard the Saakhi of Bhai Jhoolan Singh ji.
1-28 Teaching the Sangat how to Fight Battles/ Dalla Given Amrit
The Singhs heard some news and gave it to Guru ji: “Sooba Zerdast Khan of Lahore is bothering the Sangats passing through Lahore. He is giving them pain. The Sangat that was crossing Lahore, the Sooba’s soldiers looted them. When he hears your name, he loots the Sangat.” On a later day, the Singhs heard news of a repeated looting: “the Sooba of Lahore looted the Sangat again that was coming here. The fool did a bad thing.” Guru ji heard this and spoke with anger: “the Sooba looted the Sangat? Why don’t you tell me that the Sangat looted the Sooba? Nobody gives me this news. You keep saying that the Sangat gets looted.” Guru ji then spoke to all: “I speak the truth to the whole Sangat. The past 9 Satguru Paatshaahs did not give instructions to the Sangat to fight battles. Their message was to do Seva with love and devotion; chant the Name by holding the Mala. Now, I will make everyone do the Paath of Chandi. I will make everyone take on the “Singh” name and give them weapons. I will make the sparrows break the hawks. These big Men, the Turks, I will make them mix into the dust. The one who takes the Khanda Pahul, they will take on the Singh name. They should never be empty from weapons. I will make them practice Shaster Vidya everyday. Keep your hair with respect. This is my stamp and symbol on their heads.” Guru ji said to Bhai Dalla ji: “make all your men hold laathees in their hands. Go and loot the Sangat that is coming here. Bring everything they have over here. Don’t loose anything. I will teach them how to fight battles. I will have them kill the Turks.” After saying this, Guru ji had the men set off towards the Sangat that was coming. Guru ji sent a message to the Sangat: “these Brars are not under my command. I am not being served here. Come with caution and make sure you don’t get looted. Make an effort to protect yourselves from the Brars.” Bhai Dalla ji took his men. On the other side, the Sikhs tied their Kumerkassas and got ready. A fight broke out with both sides. Chaos erupted at one time. Guru ji stood on a hill and watched the fight. He was happy to see the Sangat defend themselves: “they are trying to loot them and the others are defending themselves.” The Brars charged and the Sangat protected themselves. The weapons struck from both sides. They fought using their strength. Guru ji said to the ones standing by him: “this is how they will fight the Turks. Thousands will kill and die. They will become Singhs and take the kingdom.” The Sangat came after fighting. They came and bowed their heads to Guru ji’s lotus feet. Guru ji gave them courage and said: “I want you to be alert against the enemy. Fight them like this. Fight with weapons. Save yourselves.” Satguru ji had Karah Prashaad made and put in a huge bowl. He commanded: “everyone, loot the Karah Prashaad!” The Khalsa heard this and ran to loot the Prashaad. They used their strength to push the other back. They took huge amounts of Karah. Guru ji had more made and had it looted again. He did this a few times. Some still didn’t get any because they remained standing. They didn’t loot the Degh. Sri Guru ji said: “why didn’t you go to loot the Degh? You remained seated next to me.” The people folded their hands and said: “when it is distributed, whatever comes in our hand, we will eat that. We do not have greed in our minds.” Guru ji heard this and said: “the Khalsa is great! There will be two types: the content ones and the ones that loot a lot. There will be many looters in the Khalsa. Both will have Sikhi in their hearts.” Guru ji had bowls of Amrit prepared and put into the Sarovars. The Singhs folded their hands and said: “Prabhoo ji, what is the reason for this? You make Amrit and put it into the Sarovar. What is the use of this?” Satguru ji said to all: “the Khalsa of Sumanvaani (the unending fountain) will appear here. Many Singhs will be born here.” Satguru ji prepared many quills and kept them. The Singhs asked: “why are you making pens?” Sri Prabhoo ji responded: “Damdama will be the Kanshi of the Guru. They will become writers. They will be educated here. The Sikhs will learn knowledge here.”
One day, Guru ji went hunting. He travelled 8 Kos. There was a huge Tahli there. It was 15 hands wide. The farmers of Mohr Village came. They brought pots full of milk for everyone. Guru ji and the Singhs were happy to drink the milk. Guru ji said: “your families will grow and many will become Singhs.” Prabhoo ji then came back to his Dhera. He sat in his place. Sometimes he would go to the Gurusar and have the Sarovar dug. In the evening, he would go to Jhandianay (Jhandsar). He would sit and call everyone there. He would keep many Rajitpuns under his seat. He would take out Dinars and pay all his employees. They would all come and take their salaries. Everyone got paid. Guru ji would give them fistfulls without counting. When the employees would count them, they would be exactly how much they were owed. Many times, Guru ji sat there and gave the salaries at Jhandsar. The Brars were filled with doubt seeing the place: “Guru ji has kept a huge amount of money here. He sits here and takes the money out. He pays everyone and the money doesn’t finish.” At night, when it was really dark, the Brars went to the place where Guru ji sat and gave the payments. They brought shovels and dug the ground. They kept digging but not one Kodi came to their hands. The fools were embarrassed. They regretted their shameful action.
One day, Bhai Dalla ji stood guard of Guru ji’s tent. He held a sword and shield while standing at the door. He stood guard, with a strict eye, all night long. Satguru ji saw him standing and said: “go and sleep in your bed.” Bhai Dalla ji said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, I will serve you tonight. I won’t sleep. I will keep an eye over everything.” After saying this, he stood there, staying awake all night. He chanted “Guru, Guru,” coloured in love. Guru ji got up in the morning and saw Bhai Dalla ji still standing guard. Guru ji was happy and said: “ask me for something. Tell me what is your wish. I will fulfill what you ask for.” Bhai Dalla ji said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, where you live, please give me a little space, enough for a seat there. Keep me close to you. I don’t have any other wish in my heart.” Guru ji heard this and said: “take the Amrit of the Khanda then. From Dalla, be known as Dall Singh. After that, earn the contentment of the Guru’s home.” Bhai Dalla ji folded his hands and spoke with love: “I have consumed a lot of Amrit.” Guru ji said: “when? From whom did you take it? I’ve never seen you. Why are you lying?” Bhai Dalla ji said: “Sri Guru ji, I have been eating your “Seet Prashaad,” your leftover food. Bless me with that. You are the master of every heart oh Jagan Nath.” Prabhoo ji said: “don’t make excuses to avoid it. Consume the Amrit of the Khanda.” Bhai Dalla ji said: “Sri Guru ji, your food is by the Khanda as well. Many times, the Kard is touched to your food.” Sri Guru ji laughed and said: “listen Dal Singh, I am really happy with you. Whoever takes the Amrit of the Khanda, they board the ship of the Guru.” Bhai Dalla ji bowed his head onto Guru ji’s feet and said: “sat bachan ji, sat bachan hai – your words are true.”
The next day, Karah Prashaad was made and brought to Guru ji. Bhai Dalla ji folded his hands and stood there. The Amrit of the Khanda was prepared. 100 others took Amrit along with Bhai Dalla ji. They all took Amrit from the same Sunehra. Satguru ji was very happy. He gave Bhai Dal Singh ji a Kharag and a shield. He also gave him two golden bracelets worth 2,000 Rajitpuns. They were embedded with many rubies, emeralds, and other precious gems. The clothes of Guru ji were given to Bhai Dal Singh ji for Pooja. Guru ji was very compassionate.
One day, news came: “the army of the Turks have mobilized. They are coming here to fight.” Bhai Dal Singh ji heard this and got ready to fight. He took a regiment and camped near a tree. They sat there and waited. After about two days, nobody came. He came to Guru ji and said: “Paatshaah ji, if the Turks come once, we will fight and destroy them! My army will swing their swords and slice the heads off of the Turks and lay their bodies on the earth. The Brars love to fight. They will rip the Turks apart.” Guru ji, the ocean of compassion, said: “Shaabaash Dal Singh, Shaabaash! This is how you should be with the Turks. You should have eagerness to fight battles.”
1-29 The Elders of Patiala, Nabha and Jindh
One day, Bhai Rama ji and Bhai Tiloka ji (descendants of Baba Phool ji) came. They brought carts full of flour and lentils while coming to the Satguru. They were both very faithful Sikhs. They came to do the Darshan of Guru ji. They bowed their heads to Guru ji’s lotus feet. They stood up and folded their hands. The Ocean of Compassion asked: “Rama Singh and Tilok Singh, listen, you brought many carts full of food. Where did you buy them from? Or did you bring them from your home?” The Sikhs responded: “Paatshaah, we brought them from our home. Our relatives gathered for to the carts as well. We collected it from everyone and brought it. We had a deep wish for your Darshan.” One Sikh standing close to Guru ji said: “they did the cremation of the elder Sahibzadas (Baba Ajit Singh ji and Baba Jujhar Singh ji). There were many Turks there but they still did the cremation. Ask them how they did it.” Another Brar that was standing there, said: “after the battle, many soldiers died. Prabhoo ji, fearing the Turks, they disguised themselves as crazy people and went bare-headed. They put dust on their heads and on their bodies. They wandered around the dead bodies like crazy people. While the Sahibzadas fought and killed many Turks, when they were fatally wounded, they made their bodies disappear. Nobody could see the bodies of the two Sahibzadas. The Turks would have chopped their heads and taken them otherwise. When these two brothers went there, the Sahibzadas saw them as their own and showed their bodies to them. They had a lot of wounds on them. There were hundreds of deep wounds on their bodies. They were drenched in blood. The great warriors were on the ground. Their eyebrows were still arched from anger, even after they attained Shaheedi. They laid on the bed of warriors (the battleground). The two Sikhs collected firewood and made pyres. They placed the bodies on top and did their Sanskaar. That is what your servants did.” Guru ji was really happy with the brother Sikhs. He said: “Rama Singh, Tilok Singh, listen: ask for what is in your mind.” Guru ji saw the two Sikhs as his obedient Sikhs. The brothers saw Guru ji happy and asked for what was in their hearts: “Prabhoo ji, since we came here in this area, our feet haven’t been planted well. We don’t have any permanent land here. Just as farmers have their land, we don’t have anything.” The Ocean of Compassion gave them hope: “you will take the whole Desh. Your feet will be planted deep into this land. You will be the kings of kings and big kings will bow to you. You will grow between the areas of Delhi and Lahore. You will have thousands of villages under you. You generations will rule. Your subjects will be a lot. Your wealth will grow. Your assets will grow. You did such a great task for me. That’s why you will get a lot.” After saying this, the others that came with the Sikhs, the Master was happy with them too. Their wishes were all fulfilled. The two brothers were given Dastaars. Two Dastaars were given out. They stayed with Guru ji for 7 days. They took boons and did his Darshan. They then took leave and went to their homes. Since then, their kingdoms grew. Nabha and Patiala were their kingdoms by Guru ji’s words.
When the Sikhs went to get a bull from the Bangayhar village, the people tried to joke with the Singhs. The Singhs were told to catch the human-killing bull. They pointed to the bull under the Beri tree. The bull heard Guru ji’s name and went with the Sikhs with ease. The villagers felt that they had disrespected the Guru. They came to Guru ji for forgiveness. They brought two rifles as gifts. They brought a lot of food as well. They also brought salt with them for Guru ji. They presented the gifts and bowed their heads to Guru ji. They folded their hands and said: “Prabhoo ji, please forgive our mistake. When you sent the Sikhs to get the bull from our village, we set up a prank on them. You covered our faults and made the bull go to the Bathinda Fort.” They presented the 2 rifles to Guru ji. Guru ji saw the rifles and was happy. He said: “what do you wish for? Tell me. I forgive you. You are pure now.” They folded their hands and said: “you gave Bhai Rama and Bhai Tiloka the kingdom of this area. Give it to us too. Be compassionate. We come to your shelter.” Sri Guru ji said: “you came and met me. Your mistake is forgiven. The kingdom that you have, it will stay with you for a long time. Nobody will take it from you. You will live in your homes with peace. Go and do the Seva of the Sikh Sangat.” They were forgiven and they stayed for a few days. They then took leave and went to their homes.
One day, Guru ji was sitting on a hill and the Divaan was in session. Bhai Dal Singh and the Brars were all seated. Guru ji spoke out loud for all to hear: “I see big fields of Kanak (wheat) swaying. They will make delicious foods.” Bhai Dal Singh ji and the Brars folded their hands and said: “Prabhoo ji, there is only khohi/kahi (coarse grass/reed) standing. Don’t say Kanak. Say millet and lentils will grow here. If wheat grows here, the Turks will attack and give us pain.” Guru ji heard this and smiled. Guru ji noticed that these people were unwise. They didn’t understand that the Turks were done for. The Turks had been hollowed out, suffering the blows from the Guru. The Guru’s words were permanent.
After a few days, Satguru ji sat on the hill again. Guru ji had consumed the Sukha and was in great joy. He was sitting with Bhai Dal Singh ji and the Brars. He looked far away and said: “look! There is Kamaad (sugar cane) standing which will make many types of sweets. The whole world will taste its deliciousness.” The Brars folded their hands and said: “Prabhoo ji, there is no Kamaad over there. Those are just high grasses what you are seeing. Nobody wants that stuff. They want millet and lentils to grow there. That is good for this Desh, otherwise the Turks will come here specially to loot us. They will give us pain in many ways. They will show us their strength and take taxes from us.” Guru ji smiled and said: “why don’t you like what is good for you? The earth of Sirhind, I wanted to put it all here. That’s why I said that. The good things that grow there, will grow here now. The delicious things would all grow here. In a few days, the Turks will be destroyed. The Khalsa will rule everywhere. You only want lentils and millet. You don’t want me to talk about anything else growing in this land. Your wisdom doesn’t stabilize till the day is at least 4 hours old. You keep stopping me from saying blessing words but listen, this land will still slowly prosper. Kanak and Kamaad will grow here. By the day, the population will grow. This place will establish nicely. You have ruined a lot of things by not accepting the words I was saying. If you would have accepted my words, all of the things would have grown in this Desh. They would have grown by the day.” Bhai Dal Singh and the Brars became quiet and remained standing. They couldn’t understand the wish of the Satguru. They didn’t have faith on the words of Guru ji.
1-30 Kapoora Dies/ Dharti Stands on Truth
One day Satguru ji was sitting when about 10 Singhs came to him. They bowed and sat down. They said to Guru ji: “Kot Kapoora has been killed. What you said Prabhoo ji, has become true.” Bhai Dal Singh ji was sitting close by. He asked of what happened: “who killed him? Tell me the whole story. Who was he fighting with?” The Singhs said: “at the Mela of Dhillvi, many came. Sodhi Kaul ji had a Manjhi set up there. He sat and many people offered him gifts and money. Kapoora came there as well. He had many soldiers with him. The people of Barghaari were his enemies as they were his nephews and cousins. They already had some family members of theirs (Kapoora’s nephew) killed. Those people came to the Mela. Their meetings were chaotic. Both sides were drunk with alcohol. They started fighting each other, thinking about their old feud. They first shouted at each other. They swore at each other. Their jealousy grew and weapons were used. The rifles fired. Many died as the battle broke out. Sahib Kaul ji found out about their fight. The Sodhi’s Mela was spoiled and people were scared. Sodhi Abhai Ram’s son Sodhi Sri Ram was sent by Sodhi Kaul to stop the fight. He tried to stop the fight: “you are fighting in the Guru’s home. Go home and fight. Don’t fight here.” They tried to stop the fight by yelling at them. The fighters were drunk and angry. They pointed their rifle at Sri Ram and shot him to death. People heard this and ran away. The Sodhis picked up Sri Ram’s body. The Sodhis got angry. They went to Kapoora and his people and scolded them. As they prepared to cremate Sri Ram ji, Sodhi Kaul ji stood there and was upset at the death of his grandson. He said: “don’t burn him. I sense another problem. Hot air is touching my body. The Damned of the Guru are still fighting. My family went to go stop them. The fight may get worse.” During this time a person came running to him and said to Sodhi Kaul ji: “Sri Ram’s younger brother, Prajapati, he was shot and killed as well.” They picked up Prajapati’s body and brought it to where Sodhi Kaul ji was standing. The Sodhis were upset. Both brothers were cremated together. Abhai Ram ji said a curse to Kapoora: “you killed my two sons, Kapoora. You shall suffer this sin: Dasam Paatshaah ji already gave you a curse that the Turks will hang you. Before you die, they will put a horse bit, filled with soil, into your mouth. You will feel pain when you die. With my curse, your roots will be pulled all at once. Nobody will be left to give you water. You will be in such a hard time.” Kapoora heard this and was upset.
Kapoora spent some time in his home. Eesa Khan Manjh, the Haakam of Doaba, attacked. He hated Sikhs. He surrounded Kapoora’s fort and started a fight. He attacked and killed all the soldiers. Kapoora’s whole family was killed. His sons, nephews and other relatives were all killed. Kapoora ran and hid in the high grass. Eesa Khan said to his men: “find him in the grass. Make sure he doesn’t run away.” The men found him. Kapoora was brought to Eesa Khan. The Pathaan said to him: “you are a warrior? You are like eagles and roosters, hiding like a coward. You used to keep hawks. Aren’t you ashamed?” He was arrested by being tied up. Eesa Khan left and thought to himself: “what did we get by capturing him?” He saw a pond in the jungle and stood there. He said: “we are taking this Jatt along for no reason. What will we gain with him? We can’t let him go either. For this reason, this tree that stands here, hang him from the tree with a noose.” The Pathaans command was heard. The men brought Kapoora to hang him. Kapoora saw the tree and was upset. He said: “let me bathe here first. You can put the bit in my mouth and hang me here.” One person said: “why are you saying this? It’s understandable to take a bath but what about the horse bit in your mouth?” Kapoora said: “my Guru has cursed me like this. A dirty bit will be put in my mouth and the Turks will hang me. Everything came true but you didn’t bring the horse bit. Bring that and hang me. The indestructible Guru’s words should be complete. If you don’t put the horse bit in my mouth, then I will have to take another birth. I will have to suffer the curse again.” The Pathaans accepted his request. They put a dirty bit in his mouth. They hung a chain around his neck to hang him. He left his body. He didn’t obey your command so the fool faced a lot of pain.” Satguru ji heard this and went quiet. His words were irreversible. They couldn’t be stopped. His words were like the Brahmastar of Ram Chander ji. it was never a miss to kill the enemy. Nobody was capable enough to stop them. Taking the shelter of the Sumer, one still could not be saved.” The Brars got scared. They bowed with devotion.
Some more days passed. The Supreme Sodhi lived in Damdama. Abhai Ram was in mourning. His two sons were killed at once. One day he was eating and the clouds thundered. He couldn’t tolerate his pain and said: “I am in mourning for my sons. Oh clouds, your home is happy. You are thundering and telling me. You don’t feel my pain? I am in pain from mourning. Stop now. I don’t want to see you.” When Abhai Ram said this, the rains stopped. A drought happened in that area. For a long time, clouds did not come. The sun shined. People were anxious. In this way, the story of the area happened. I am telling everyone how it happened.
Guru ji lived in Damdama Sahib. Some were cursed and some got boons. One day, Guru ji sat in his court and said to all: “tell me who has picked up the earth? What does everything rest on?” some said: “a white bull carries it.” Some said: “Shaishnaag has it picked up.” Some said: “a turtle picks it up on its back.” Some said: “a bore picks it up on its tusk.” Guru ji heard this and said: “whoever carries the earth, where are they standing? You can’t pick it up without any support. Whoever is supporting them, tell me who or what it is.” Everyone folded their hands and said: “please bless us and tell us.” Sri Guru ji said to all: “this whole universe that you see, it stands on the support of the “Sach,” the Truth (the only Sach/Truth is Parmatma, the Aatam Satta). There is no other support than the Truth. The sun burns by the support of the Truth. The King of the Night, the moon, stands on the support of the Truth. The ocean is deep by the support of the Truth. The patient earth stands on the Truth. The wind blows by the support of the Truth. The fire burns on the support of the Truth. By the Truth’s support, the false is seen. Without the Truth, the false cannot exist. It is like the rope that looks true. The snake seen in it is the false. If the rope wasn’t truly there, the false snake wouldn’t be imagined. For this reason, understand that everyone relies on the Truth.” Everyone heard this and bowed their heads. They said: “you have told us the facts. You blessed us by telling us the truth. Whoever you bless, they recognize the Truth, the Hari’s form. Your Satsang is Dhan Dhan. It takes us across us the world ocean. We don’t have to take another birth and die again. You make them your servant whom you make as your own.
