1-21 The Woman of Chabba is Blessed a Son/ Bhai Bhagtoo’s Descendants

In this way, Prabhoo ji had left the battle’s behind and started to live in Sabo Ki Talwandi.  Guru ji opened up is Kamarkassa and rested peacefully.  He lived there in peace.  There were no more battles to fight.  The enemy had suffered great losses.  They did not dare to strike again.  The place where Guru ji stayed was hence known as “Damdama,” the resting place.  He was worry-free, as the strength of the enemy was destroyed.  Their roots were uprooted and the process of their kingdoms drying up had started.  The news spread to far away lands.  The Sangat began to come there.  They came everyday.  They brought many gifts as they came to do the Darshan of Satguru ji.  Their wishes were fulfilled as they came.  The Divaans took place everyday with Shabads being sung.  The Singhs with love came in the thousands.

Sri Prabhoo ji got ready to go hunting one day.  The Singhs were going along with him.  As he was leaving the Dhera, one woman came and sang a Sadh: “Binay karaindee vo Satgur Gobind Singh agay- I make my request in front of Satguru Gobind Singh.  Sohni Dahri bibi paghay – he has a beautiful beard and Pugri.  Gote Varaich pind hai Chabbay –  I am from the Varaich clan from the village Chabba.  Pachain khaali chali jay ik phall lagay – I am leaving empty.  I wish for a fruit.”  Guru ji heard her and looked towards her.  He smiled and said: “sing it again!”  The woman heard this and sang the Sadh again, the same as she did before.  The Prabhoo asked: “where are you from?  Which land and village do you live in?”  She said: “listen Guru Gareeb Nivaaj, I am from Chabba in Majha.  It is south of Sri Amritsar.  3 Kos away (from Amritsar) is my home.  I came from there with a wish in my heart.  I came to ask you for a son.  When I sat in your court, I couldn’t ask you then.  I said what I wanted to by singing this Sadh.  I came from far away.  I came to your shelter with my wish.”  Prabhoo ji heard this and said to his servant: “get me a quill and ink.  The servant brought a paper, quill and ink.  Guru ji wrote on the paper.  The Sikh took the paper to give it to the woman.  Guru ji said: “I give you one son.”  The Sikh looked at the paper and said: “Maharaj, this says 7 but you are saying 1.”  Prabhoo ji said: “alright, it’s 7 then.  She came from far away to ask me.”  The woman took the paper and was really happy.  She bowed and went back home.  In time, the woman had 7 sons.  She spread the praises of Guru ji.

Guru ji then went hunting in the jungle.  He looked around for deer to hunt but couldn’t find any.  Prabhoo ji said to the Singhs: “one of you Singhs did not do their Kanga today.  For this reason, we can’t find a hunt.”  One of the Singhs spoke: “I did not do my Kanga today.”  Guru ji commanded him: “you can do it right now.  Do it quickly and get ready.”  The Singh quickly combed his hair and tied his Dumaalaa again.  He met with Guru ji’s group and set off again.  As they began to look in the jungle, they found many animals to hunt.  Guru ji then stopped everyone and explained to them: “a Singh should always do this: be ready before everything you do (ie. Bathe, comb your hair, tie your Dumaalaa).  When you are about to leave, do the Ardaas.  Your task will be a success then.  Don’t go without being ready (without the Kanga done) and without doing Ardaas.”  Everyone obeyed.  They did as Sri Guru ji commanded.  Satguru ji then came back to the Dhera.  He slept the night and woke up at Amritvela.

Guru ji sat and the Singhs came to him.  The Sangat came and were rewarded by doing the Darshan.  A Sikh brought a huge pot of yoghurt.  He presented it to Guru ji.  Guru ji asked: “where are you from?  From which village are you from?  What is your father’s name?  What is your name?”  The Sikh said: “I am from Mor Village, oh Master.  My father’s name is Bheem.  My name is Dalpat.”  Guru ji was happy to see the Sikh’s big and strong body.  He was tall with thick arms.  Guru ji blessed him and said: “if you are born of Bheem, then you certainly have earned to be the Patti (master) of the Dals (armies).”  Guru ji was happy with the Sikh and tied a Pagri on his head.  Guru ji said: “if you would keep the greatness of Sikhi then your wealth would grow as well.  Keep the honour of the Guru’s home.”  The Sikh sat for some time and then bowed before going home.  He tied the Pagri for about 4 days.  He then heard some Dooms singing and gave them his Pagri, impressed by their singing.  The fool did not think of the greatness of the Guru.  He remained empty from the joys that were given to him.

Bhai Bhagtoo ji had a grandson named Bhai Dyaal Das ji.  He lived in the village Bhucho.  He came to do Guru ji’s Darshan with humility.  He brought some Rajitpuns to give to Guru ji.  He sat near Sri Prabhoo ji.  Guru ji looked towards him and said: “Dyaal Singh!  Accept this name now!  Take the Pahul of the Khanda now.  Become the Khalsa and destroy your doubt.  Keep the Rehit of the Kesh and Kachera.  Do not meet with the Minas and Masands.  Keep Shasters with you, day and night.  Say the Fathe of the Guru.”  Bhai Dyaal Das ji got scared and said: “we have been Sikhs for many generations.  My father and grandfather were Sikhs of the Guru.  They are great and known in the world.  How can I start this new tradition?  I can follow the path of my ancestors.  All of the Gurus blessed them.  They saw them as their own servants.  I am old now.  It is not good for me to take the Pahul now.”  Sri Guru ji explained to him: “I have started a great and supreme Panth.  It will give joys in both Loks.  It will rule kingdoms and destroy the sinners.  Whoever boards this ship, they will become elephants from ants.  The ones who are scared like cowards, they will become lions and take the name Singh.  For this reason, you should take this on.  Stop the traditions of the Masands.”  Bhai Dyaal Das ji returned Guru ji’s words again.  He didn’t trust the Guru’s words and said: “please bless me now just as you did my father and grandfather.”  Guru ji heard this and said a curse: “you returned my words over and over again.  You didn’t take the Pahul that I was going to give.  You are taking on another wisdom with stubbornness.  When my Choohray (low caste) Sikhs make the Amrit, you will then take it.”  Bhai Dyaal Das ji heard this and went quiet.  He went home after a while.  He regretted the events, thinking: “I spoiled it with the Guru.”  Guru ji did not look towards them again, nor keep them close to him with respect.  Guru ji said: “he is the Masand of Bhagtoo.  I won’t go to his home.”

Bhai Bhagtoo ji had a son named Bhai Gora ji.  He was the father of Dyaal Das.  [Bhai Dyaal Das ji had a son who took Amrit and was named Bhai Gurbaksh Singh ji.  Gurbaksh Singh had a son named Bhai Desoo Singh ji who established the kingdom of Kaithal.  His son was Raja Lal Singh ji, who was the father of Raja Uday Singh ji Kaithal Patti] Bhai Bhagtoo ji had another son named Bhai Jeevan ji.  He gave his life to Guru Har Rai Sahib ji for the life of a son of a Brahmin.  Guru ji blessed his family to be great and many.  They lived in Bhai ke Chak.  They came to Guru ji and took the Pahul of the Khanda.  They took the joys of Guru ji.  One was Bhai Ram Singh ji and the other was Bhai Fateh Singh ji.  They were born of the same mothers.  They also had two half brothers from another mother.  They were Bhai Bakhtoo Singh ji and Bhai Takhtoo Singh ji.  The 4 sons of the son of Bhai Jeevan ji (named Bhai Sant Das ji) were all Singhs.  They lived close to where Guru ji lived.  They kept coming and going to see Guru ji.  Satguru ji spent many months there.  The Sikhs came to do his Darshan from every direction.  There was always a crowd of people at Damdama Sahib.  They came to do Guru ji’s Darshan.  They brought many types of gifts.  They gave the gifts by folding their hands.

1-22 Godharia Singh/ Bhaago/ Dalla Receives Wazeer Khan’s Parwana

One day, Sri Guru ji spoke: “Ram Singh (Bhagtoo), we will camp at your village for a night or two.  I want to see how your village is.”  Bhai Ram Singh ji spoke with his hands folded: “our land is only sand.  It gets hotter with the sun.  There is a lot of heat in our area.  The wind then blows which is very hot.  It makes one anxious.  The sand flies because of that, blinding people and making our homes dirty.  When the wind blows, it is painful.  Such is our village in such a Desh.”  Sri Prabhoo ji said: “let’s get ready to go.  We will go and have a look once.”  Bhai Ram Singh ji obeyed and left to make preparations in his home.  He told the rest of the villagers of Guru ji’s wish to come.  It was summer but he made a cool place for Guru ji to sit.  He made it by the greatness of Guru ji.  He set up branches all around that were drenched in water.  He made the area small to sit in.  He brought thick sand for the ground.  He kept wetting it with water.  He filled pots with water and buried them in the thick sand to make them cold.  He made preparations for Satguru ji to come.

A Sikh named Bhai Godharia ji, whose ways were beautiful, he was very young when he came to the sons of Bhai Bhagtoo ji.  He served them and stayed there.  Bhai Gora ji had Bhai Godharia ji work in his home.  He was given the task of pulling the rope on the well.  He did other Sevas as well.  Whatever task he was given, he would continue doing the Seva till evening.  One day he was instructed to cut the grass.  They gave him 10 Sers of millet.  He would eat 1 Ser of millet in a day.  He would cut the grass continuously everyday, from morning to night.  He cut and piled up a huge amount of grass.  He would only come back when told.  Nobody called him back for 10 days.  He drank water from the nearby pond.  He did the Simran of Hari in his heart all the time.  When Bhai Gora ji came, they were happy to see the tied-up grass.  Many carts were loaded and taken home.  Bhai Godharia ji was instructed to grind all of the grains.  He did so by not making his mind waiver.  He did 21 Paaths of Japji Sahib everyday.  He did work with his hands and feet.

One day a maid was assigned to help him but Bhai Godharia ji stopped her and did the work alone.  Bhai Bhagtoo ji’s son Bhai Jeevan ji was scolding a farmer one day.  He slapped him.  Bhai Godharia ji stopped him and said: “why are you hitting him for no reason?”  Bhai Jeevan ji spoke with anger: “what do you know about ruling and keeping wealth?”  Bhai Jeevan ji got up and kicked Bhai Godhria ji, while saying: “why aren’t you grinding?”  Bhai Godharia ji said: “you don’t have compassion.  You are bloated with the ego of ruling.”  He continued grinding but Bhai Jeevan ji’s stomach became bloated.  He was in pain.  When he came to the doctors to get his illness cured, he told them of the servant’s curse: “our servant is greater than us.  My peace is gone because of this.”  Bhai Gora ji brought Bhai Godharia ji with respect and had his hands touch Bhai Jeevan ji.  The bloating was gone and he was peaceful again.  They all got together and praised him: “you served us and became greater than us.  You are painful for us now.  You can go where you wish to now.  We don’t have the strength to keep you.  You can curse us at any time.”  Bhai Godharia ji then went where he wanted to.  He did any Seva he was asked to.  He ate and continued his work while doing the Simran of Satnam, day and night.  Whatever he said from his mouth became true right away.

Bhai Godharia ji then went home.  His family got him married.  He had 3 sons.  He went to another village one day.  A farmer who owned land was harvesting his crops.  He hired Bhai Godharia ji to cut the crops.  He worked all day.  The farmer didn’t care to give him food or water.  When it was evening, the Jaat remembered and said to Bhai Godharia ji: “let’s go and have some Khichdee.  I will make sure you are full.”  Bhai Godharia ji spoke in anger: “let me cut these roots properly.”  Since then, the Jaat has been in pain.  He shouted out in pain: “hai, hai!”  The people said: “he is really powerful.  You made him do a lot of work.  You didn’t give him anything to eat.  You still have time.  Give him yoghurt to eat and ask for forgiveness with your hands folded.  The mother of the Jaat put too much chilli in the yoghurt.  She place the yoghurt in front of Bhai Godharia ji.  He ate it, which was quite spicy, and said: “oh mother, may a snake eat you.”  That night, both son and mother died.  In the morning, Bhai Godharia ji got up and went somewhere else.  After wandering for many days, he came back home.  Whatever he said, became reality.  He recited Japji and did the Simran of Guru.

One day, he came to the fields and was told to pull the mustard.  A Sadhoo came and asked him: “what are you doing?  In what task are you keeping your mind busy?”  He said: “I am pulling my roots.  I do not want them to be planted again.”  When he responded to the Sadhoo, the Sadhoo left; but when he came home, his three sons died.  It was his words that became true.  He had no joy or sorrow in his heart.  Gold and dirt were the same for him.  His home was like the jungle for him.

Bhai Godharia ji heard of Guru ji’s arrival in his village.  He was happy and came to see Guru ji.  He did Darshan and was really happy.  He bowed to Guru ji’s feet, over and over again.  Satguru ji asked others about him.  The people said: “he is a great saint.”  They told Prabhoo ji his stories.  They told him of how he does as he pleases.  Bhai Godharia ji lived among the Singhs and ate Langar.  He did the Simran of Satnam and did Guru ji’s Darshan.  By his Darshan, faults are washed away.  One day, Guru ji said: “I have seen this land.  Nobody is a bigger renouncer than Godharia.  His focus is connected deeply with Parmeshwar.  He can make the whole land pure.  He can do as he wishes.  Everything is in his hands.”  Sri Guru ji praised him.  Everyone knew Bhai Godharia ji as a great saint.

The woman, Mai Bhaago ji, who met Guru ji in Mukatsar, her devotion for Guru ji became deeper.  She began to live in a Dighamber state (not wearing any clothes) as she had destroyed her ego along with shame and honour.  Her state rose so high that she lost the awareness of her body.  She was unaware of the world and became a Param Hans.  She was like the woman Gaargi, who is mentioned in the Katha of the Vedas.  She did not wear clothes either.  She was a Paramhansani and a great Avdhoot.  Mai Bhaago ji was in the same state, the highest level of Brahmgyaan.  She stayed like this in the Vaheer of Guru ji, as an Avdhoot in the Guru’s home.  She kept a huge spear and a pot in her hands.  She was always in bliss and in the single state.  As she stayed without clothes for many months, one day, Guru ji saw her and said: “listen Mai Bhaago, the chaste and truthful one, you have blessed both your parent’s family and your in-law’s family.  You have achieved the Param Hans status.  You will never be at fault.  It is alright for you to stay Dighamber because your focus is in the single state.  You have destroyed the ego of your body.  You are one with the Parm Avinashi, the indestructible one.  If you wish to stay with me (in my army), wear a Kachera and tie a Dastaar to your head.  Wear a Chadra on your body.  Live your days by keeping your body covered.”  Mai Bhaago ji heard the command and obeyed.  She covered her body with a Chadra.  She kept a spear in her hand, all the time.  She stayed near Guru ji all the time.

One day the Divaan was in session.  Bhai Dalla ji came and sat near Guru ji.  The Sooba of Sirhind, Wajeed Khan, heard that Guru ji was in Talwandi.  He was shocked to hear this.  He scratched his head and said: “we waged big wars but he is still alive!  Nobody killed him!  He killed Lakhs of Turks.  He caused sorrow and mourning in every village.”  He wrote a Parwana to Bhai Dalla ji: “capture the Guru and surrender him to me.  The Emperor will give you greatness.  Do this quickly or else I will send my huge army to you.  They will kill you and the Guru.”  The Parwana was read.  Bhai Dalla ji wrote a response: “my Pranas are with the Guru.  How can I give them to you without killing or be killed?  If your huge army comes to attack, we will kill them or leave this place.  We will go deep into the jungle where there is no water.  We will stay with the Guru forever.  We won’t obey your command.”  He wrote this back to Wazeer Khan.  Wazeed Khan read this and was upset.  There was nothing the fool could do.

1-23 Ram Singh’s Home Bhai Ke Chak/ Dyaal Das

One day, Satguru ji said to Bhai Dalla ji: “I have a desire to see the fort of Bathinda.  I have heard it is huge and great to fight a battle in.  I will travel around the area as well for a few days.  We will casually roam the area.”  Bhai Dalla ji said: “Prabhoo ji, the Turks are not there.  Our lands our rebellious towards the crown.  The land is without water though.  The Turks don’t come here.  The Fort of Bathinda is in ruins for this reason.  It has been a long time since someone used to live there.  Raje Binaypaal made that fort.  You can roam there as you please.  The Turks won’t dare come there.  They can’t come there.  Please come back here though, after you see the area.  Don’t wish to live anywhere else.”  The master gave him hope and mobilized his army.

The army of the Singhs were with Guru ji.  They left Damdama Sahib.  They hunted on the way.  Sri Bhagwant ji roamed the area as he wished.  He first went to Chak Bhai Ka where Bhai Ram Singh ji had made preparations.  Satguru ji arrived there and blessed his servants.  Bhai Ram Singh ji and the family came ahead to welcome Guru ji.  The people of the village all came to bow to Guru ji’s feet.  They all walked into the village, leading the way.  A great love and devotion was in Bhai Ram Singh ji’s heart.  Under a Pippal tree, was Guru ji’s seat set.  He had made a small hut that was cool for Guru ji.  Guru ji was seated there, leaving his horse.  The sand was thick with water sprinkled on it.  Cold water pots were filled there.  A nice bed was laid out for Guru ji to sit on.  A white sheet was laid out.  Guru ji sat on the bed and said: “listen Ram Singh, you said your village was really hot but you made such a nice place.  I feel like I am sitting near the shores of the Jamuna.  I feel the wind of Paonta flowing here.  It’s killing the heat wave.”  The wet branches were cooling the wind as it came through the hut.  Guru Bhagwan ji praised the place.  Guru ji sat down.  Degh was made.  Langar was made.  A plate was brought for Guru ji with food.  Sri Prabhoo ji ate as much as he wished to.  The other Singhs were given Langar as well.  Mata Sundri ji and Mata Sahib Devi ji stayed in the home with respect.  Bhai Ram Singh ji took Guru ji’s leftover food.  He ate the leftover food.  The plates of the Matas were finished by the women of the house.  The women ate the leftovers of Mata Sundri ji’s place.  Mata Sahib Devi ji’s leftover food was not eaten by anyone.  It was given to the dogs.  Mata ji was angry to hear this.  She said to Satguru ji: “I never asked them to take my leftovers.  They took it from me and gave it to the dogs.”  Prabhoo ji said to Bhai Ram Singh ji: “what did your wife do?”  Bhai Ram Singh ji folded his hands and said: “Mata ji’s Gote Kunala did not happen with you.  Your marriage was not consummated physically.  Her body has not touched the body of the Guru.  For this reason, they thought about this and discarded her leftovers.”  Guru ji said: “she is the mother of the Khalsa.  Don’t think in this way.”

Bhai Dyaal Das ji heard of Guru ji’s arrival.  He hadn’t obeyed Guru ji’s command of taking the Khanda Pahul.  He came from Bhucho.  He bowed to Guru ji’s feet.  Guru ji saw him but didn’t say anything to him nor did he ask him how he was.  Bhai Ram Singh ji folded his hands and said: “he is a flower of the same garden, Prabhoo ji.  See him as your own and bless him.”  Guru ji didn’t pay any attention to Bhai Dyaal Das ji.  Both cousins understood Guru ji’s wish.  Bhai Dyaal Das ji was taken to the side by Bhai Ram Singh ji.  He said: “Prabhoo ji is going to the Fort of Bathinda.  Bhucho Village is near there.  Go and make preparations.  Make a lot of Langar and Degh.  Then make a request to make Guru ji happy.”  Bhai Dyaal Das ji heard this and went home.  He had a lot of food prepared.

In the evening, Bhai Ram Singh ji said: “let’s go home Prabhoo ji.”  Satguru ji said: “I like it here.  I will stay here.  This is a nice place that I like.”  Bhai Ram Singh ji said: “please set foot in my home and make it pure.”  Guru ji heard his request and went to Bhai Ram Singh ji’s home.  Bhai Ram Singh ji had 2 mothers.  He did not speak to his stepmother or stepbrothers.  His stepmother found out that Guru ji was coming.  She made a blanket with fine thread.  She hid it and stood in the way of where Guru ji was going.  She didn’t go to Bhai Ram Singh ji’s home.  She put the blanket on her arm and thought: “I won’t go to Ram Singh’s home.  When Guru ji comes this way, I will give this to him.”  She had this wish in her heart and stood.  Satguru ji was omniscient.  He knew her wish.  Satguru ji changed directions and turned toward the mother’s home.  Bhai Ram Singh ji saw this and said: “come here, come her master!”  Guru ji said: “you head along.  I am coming.  I have some work to do.”  Guru ji went to the woman’s home, where the woman was standing in her doorway.  The woman saw that the Satguru knew her love.  She grabbed Guru ji’s feet.  She gave Guru ji the blanket and was really happy.  She said: “Dhan Dhan Guru.”  She had love in her heart.

Guru ji then turned towards Bhai Ram Singh ji’s home.  He came into his home.  He had a raw Chabarra.  Guru ji wanted to stay there.  To go there, there was a wooden ladder set up.  Bhai Bhakhtoo ji had a stairwell.  Bhai Ram Singh ji thought: “I hope Guru ji doesn’t go to my stepbrother’s home to go up.”  He had a wooden ladder set up.  When Guru ji climbed the chabarra, he said: “Ram Singh, what did you do?  You made me go up the hard way.  You played family politics and made me climb the wooden ladder.  This is not good what you did.”  Guru ji spent the night in the Chabarra.

In the morning, Guru ji bathed and did his cleansing routines.  When Guru ji came down, he used the stairway.  When Bhai Bhakhtoo Singh ji and Bhai Takhtoo Singh ji saw Guru ji come down their way, they quickly laid out a bed and had Guru ji sit on it.  They bowed and presented gifts.  A child came to Guru ji.  Sri Prabhoo ji picked up the child and placed him in his lap.  Bhai Ram Singh ji scolded the child: “you didn’t keep the respect of Guru ji!  You shouldn’t touch his clothes but you made your dirty child sit in the Guru’s lap.”  Prabhoo ji said: “don’t scold him, he will be a great person.”

One horse was decorated and brought for Guru ji with 100 Rajitpuns.  Bhai Ram Singh ji gave this to Guru ji and bowed.  Guru ji was happy and fulfilled their wishes.  Guru ji called for his horse.  When his horse came, he mounted it and travelled many Kos.  Guru ji headed towards Bhucho Village.  There was a huge pond there that had a little dirty water in it.  Guru ji’s horse was thirsty.  He entered the pond to make the horse drink it.  Guru ji lowered the reins so the horse would lower its neck to drink but it didn’t drink the water.  The horse lifted its head.  Guru ji understood why he didn’t drink it.  Guru ji said: “the smell of the Masand is in here.  That’s why my horse didn’t drink the water.”

A Sikh was sent to the village.  The Sikh saw the home of Bhai Dyaal Das.  He saw Dyaal Das sitting down.  He told him of Guru ji’s arrival.  He heard of Guru ji’s arrival and quickly left his home.  He bowed to Guru ji’s feet, folded his hands and said: “Sri Satguru ji, come set up your Dhera here.  I am your servant for many generations.”  Sri Guru ji said: “I will stay in Bhagoo Village.”  The elderly Dyaal Das ji understood and said: “I have prepared a lot of Langar.  Please eat and have it distributed.  Set your pure feet in my home and bless it.” Guru ji said: “I won’t stay there.  It is hot.  I need to go on ahead.  We need to be on our way otherwise the sun will get hotter.”  Guru ji travelled on.  He didn’t give or take anything with Dyaal Das.  Bhai Ram Singh ji said: “Chacha ji, make this effort: pack the Karah Prashaad and board it on a cart.  Travel with us with joy.  Where Guru ji stops, distribute the Prashaad.  Guru ji is upset with you.  If you came after him, he will forgive you.”  Bhai Dyaal Das ji heard this and packed the Langar on carts.  He got ready and set off with Guru ji’s Vaheer.  Guru ji travelled and set up the Dhera in Bhagoo Village.

1-24 Kicking out the Kana Daynt from Bathinda

After spending the night, Sri Satguru ji awoke at Amritvela and bathed after doing his mourning cleansing routines.  Guru ji headed towards the Fort of Bathinda, which was huge.  Bhai Godharia ji also came with Guru ji’s Vaheer.  Bhai Dyaal Das ji brought his cart full of Langar.  Satguru ji did not accept his offering.  The Guru Bhagwan set up the Dhera.  Everyone camped all around Guru ji’s tent, near the Qila of Bathinda.  They all ate at night.  They slept the night in peace.  Guru ji slept, the Giver of Peace.  The Singhs guarded while making rounds around Guru ji’s tent.  They all took shifts and stayed awake.  At midnight, a young lady came.  She did 3 Parkarmas of Guru ji’s bed and bowed.  She folded her hands and said: “you know my pain.  The Jungle Desh, the land; I am the land.  I have taken on a human form.  It is very auspicious that you came here.  Make the whole Desh beautiful now.  Make it prosperous from the jungles and the ruins by years of drought.  There is a Kana (one-eyed) Daynt that lives in the Qila.  He is a big sinner.  He doesn’t let the crops grow.  His shadow pulls the energy from all the crops.  He takes the food from the people and eats it.  When you kick him out, the Desh can be inhabitable.  It will grow by the day.  Many crops can grow then.  The radiance of your coming here will be known by the whole Jungle Desh (Malva).”  Guru ji heard the young lady who was the Jungle Desh in human form.  He gave her hope with his sweet swords.  As she disappeared, Guru ji slept the night in peace.

In the morning, Guru ji bathed and performed his daily cleansing routines.  Guru ji sat in the Divaan.  There was a great Pandit that stayed with Guru ji.  He sat near Guru ji.  Sri Prabhoo ji started a conversation with him about what the young lady said: “this Qila is really big but a huge Daynt lives inside it.  He wishes to ruin the Desh all the time.  Tell me, Pandit ji, how can we kick him out?”  The Pandit heard this and said: “you are the greatest being.  You know everything!  Since you have commanded me to speak, I will speak then: this Qila was made for rebels.  Binaypaal Raja was a big king.  He made this fort with a lot of money.  When Raja Goriya ruled this area, he lived in it and destroyed most of it.  He destroyed the outer parts, making it smaller.  If we sacrifice an elephant here, then we can go inside.  The ghosts and other Prayts will leave then.  They won’t stay.  Without giving the sacrifice, you can still go inside.  You are omnipotent and can throw the Daynt out without the sacrifice.  You can do as you wish.  The ghosts and Daynts will leave with joy if you give them the sacrifice.  They will be happy with that.”  Sri Guru ji said: “where can we get an elephant from?  We can’t find one.  If we find one, how can we bring it here by which the Daynt would be happy?”  The Pandit said: “if you can’t find an elephant, we can call for a bull of the same colour of an elephant.”  The Sikhs were told by Guru ji: “there is a village called Bangayhar near here.  Go there and get a jhota (bull).  Tell the owners of the village of why I need it.”

Five Singhs went to the village.  When they went there, a few farmers were standing in the square of the village.  The Singhs said to them: “Sri Guru ji has asked for a bull to give a sacrifice.  We need to kick out the Daynt from the fort.  This will be good for all.”  There was a huge bull in the village that killed humans.  It gave the farmers pain.  It was scratching its body near a Beri Tree.  It was a very scary bull.  The farmers pointed towards the bull as they wanted to make fun.  They wanted to prank the Singhs.  They thought: “when they touch the bull, it will hit them.  They will run around and go away from here.  We will stand and watch the drama.”  They said to the Singhs: “go over there where there is a Beri tree.  The bull is standing there.  Take it.  We won’t hide it from Sri Guru ji.”  They laughed as they said this.  The five Singhs heard this and went to the bull.  The strong bull stood there.  They came to the bull and said: “the Guru has called for you.  Come and give your sacrifice with joy.”  The bull heard Guru ji’s name and went with the Singhs.  It walked in front of the Singhs like it was powerless.  The Singhs and the bull walked slowly.  The Singhs were behind the bull.  The farmers saw this and were shocked.  They understood that Satguru ji was very powerful.  They regretted what they did.  They regretted that they played a prank for laughs.  The bull lifted its head and came in front of Guru ji.

Sri Prabhoo ji got up and went to the Qila.  The Qila was strong and high.  Guru ji went up the pathway slowly.  Everyone else followed.  The bull went up the Qila as well.  Everyone was patient.  The bull stood with patience.  Guru ji looked towards Bhai Mailaghar Singh ji and said: “do the Jhatka of the bull and give its sacrifice to kick out the strong Daynt.”  Bhai Mailaghar Singh ji heard this and pulled out his Kharag.  He swung his sword hard with all his strength and chopped the head off of the bull.  It was a clean strike.  The jhota fell.  He gave his life in front of Satguru ji.  He made his death a success.  Satguru ji spoke out loud: “the bull that has been killed, I want only one strong person to pick its body up and throw it on the land.”  Everyone heard this and went quiet.  The Sadhoo Bhai Godharia ji heard this and said: “if it be your command, may I pick it up alone and show my strength?”  After receiving the signal from Guru ji, Bhai Godharia ji lifted up the body of the heavy bull.  He brought it to the high wall and threw it far away.  Everyone was shocked to see this.

In this time, the Daynt came out.  He showed himself to Sri Prabhoo ji.  He folded his hands and said: “I used to live in Goindwal before.  Thousands of us used to live there and ruin the people.  Sri Guru Angad Dev ji command Guru Amar Das ji to come there.  He used his cane to burn us.  The Prayts all ran away.  My mother was pregnant then.  She was in labor while running through the fields.  I was born there.  A Jawahar piece hit me in the eye and damaged it.  I was a Kana then.  My other brother was born too.  He broke his arm and is known as Toonda Daynt.  Since then, we have been living here.  It’s been 100 years.  You are not letting us live here now.  Which Desh should we go to now?’  Sri Prabhoo ji commanded: “I will send you to a place where you can live forever.  I have cursed Sirhind.  Destroy the city to ruins.  Pull its roots and throw them into the Sutlej.  Nobody will stop you from living there now.  You will live there forever.  Go from here now.  Don’t delay.  Know this as my Desh.  It is called the Jungle Desh but it will be with Anand and be known as the Malva.”  The Daynt heard this and said: “I am really hungry.  I won’t be able to go there.  Command me to eat as much as I can.  You can kick me out then.”  Sri Guru ji said: “what do you usually eat?  Why didn’t you eat today?”  The Daynt said to Guru ji: “Maharaj, I wander this Desh.  I eat wherever I can.  I eat 1,000 Maunds of food from impure people.  The ones who don’t chant the name of Hari or the Satguru, I take their food and eat it.  You are kicking me out early in the morning.  I haven’t taken any food to eat yet.”  Sri Guru ji said: “leave now.  On your way, there will be a village called Masoorpur.  Rest there in the afternoon.  Eat there and reach Sirhind by evening.”  The Daynt heard the command and left after bowing.  He knew what was better for him.  Sri Prabhoo ji did the Dhera in the Qila.  Whoever heard about this, they were shocked.  They praised Guru ji: “only he can do what he did.”

1-25 The Song of Sassi/ The Katha of Bathinda/ Dyaal Das Forgiven

After eating at night, Guru ji laid down on his bed and went to sleep.  Below the fort, two merchants came and camped out.  They sang the Song of Sassi and Punoo.  They sang in Raag, over and over again.  They enjoyed themselves at night.  They were alone and the night was calm.  Guru ji was listening as he was laying on his bed.  He could hear them from inside the Qila.  The merchants sang for a long time.  Everyone heard it and enjoyed it.  They appreciated the skill of the singers.  Guru ji went to slept and woke up at Amritvela.  Guru ji bathed and got ready.  The Divaan was in session.  Guru ji asked: “who was singing during the night?”  The Singhs said: “some merchants had come with their commodities.  They had camels with them with packages.  They were singing.”  Guru ji said: “go and call them.”  Guru ji’s servant went to get the merchants.

The servant said: “Guru ji is calling you.”  The merchants came and bowed their heads to Guru ji.  Sri Prabhoo ji said: “as you sang last night, the song of Sassi and Punoo in Raag; sit here and sing it again.  Sing it with enjoyment in the same way.”  The merchants folded their hands and said: “we won’t be able to sing it now.  We are shy in front of you.  We are shy to speak in front of you.”  Guru ji put up a curtain separator and had the merchants sit hidden from all.  The merchants obeyed and then sang the song but it wasn’t the same enjoyment as the night before.  At night time, they were alone and only sang for themselves.  Guru ji gave them a lot of money and blessed them.  Prabhoo ji was happy with them.

Somebody raised a question about singing the song of Sassi and Punoo.  Guru ji responded: “it’s hard to plant your finger into the ground.  Sassi was buried into the ground for love.  The greatness of love is greater than great.  She carried the love till her Pranas left, till death.  Such lovers, their names become immortal.  Lovers have been sung about for Lakhs of years.  The ones who love the Guru Parmeshwar, they receive Mukti right away.  Without love, all efforts are empty.  Of all the great Karmas, love is the most precious jewel.  The lover achieves the highest status without Japp, Tapp and Yog.”  Guru ji said the praise of Love.  The Master stayed for a while.

The Brars told Guru ji the story of the area: “Raja Binaypaal went hunting and came to this area which was a jungle.  He saw an interesting thing here: a pregnant goat was fighting a Bhagyaar (wolf, leopard or panther) to save her kids.  The goat pushed the Bhagyaar away.  The Raja declared this place as undefeatable.  He said to his Vizier: “have a fort made here, quickly.  Call many workers to build it from everywhere.”  The vizier looked for people but didn’t find many.  The Raja realised that the fort was not going to be built soon.  The tax crops he had, he waived it.  He wanted the people to bring soil instead.  Many people came and brought soil.  In this way, the fort was built high and fast.  He had a deep tunnel made which goes to Bhatner Fort (Hanumangarh).”  They spoke other things about the fort to Satguru ji.

The next morning, everyone got ready to leave.  The horses were saddled and mounted.  As they travelled for a bit, a Dhera was set at Sammi Village.  The people of the village came to bow to Guru ji.  They brought gifts with their hands folded.  They did the Darshan and bowed to Guru ji’s feet.  They brought milk, yoghurt and ghee.  They also brought grain for the horses along with food for the Langar.  Guru ji slept the night in joy.  In the morning, everyone bathed and set off.  They all came to Damdama Sahib and set up the Dhera.  Bhai Dalla ji came out to receive Guru ji.  He bowed to Guru ji’s lotus feet.  Many people came to sit with Guru ji.  Bhai Dyaal Das ji, who had his cart full of Langar with him, brought everything back.  Bhai Ram Singh ji made a request: “forgive him, Prabhoo ji.  See him as your own.  He came with us to Bathinda with Karah Prashaad and Langar.”  Bhai Dyaal Das ji grabbed Guru ji’s feet.  He folded his hands and stood up.  Satguru ji saw him and said: “sit down.  He is a Masand of the house of Bhagtoo.  I forgive him.  Distribute the Langar.”  Ardaas was done in front of Guru ji.  When they saw the Langar, there were many insects in the food.  The food was spoiled.  Guru ji was told this: “oh Master, the Langar can’t be eaten.  It’s been many days and so it has insects in them.  They were loaded on the carts for many days as we travelled.”  Prabhoo ji said: “show it to me.  You can distribute it after.”  Some food was brought to Guru ji.  Guru ji made a ball out of the Karah Prashaad.  He made a bullet out of the Degh.  The Langar of the Bhagat was complete.  Guru ji ate the Prashaad.  The ones who were going to distribute the Langar, they noticed that the food was fresh again with no insects.  It was pure again.  The Singhs distributed the Langar.  Everyone was satiated with the Karah.  Chaos erupted.  The Khalsa looted the Karah Prashaad, taking all the food.  Everyone took their own share.  Satguru ji saw this and laughed.  Guru ji wanted the Khalsa to know how to loot, as Nadir and Abdali needed to be looted in the future.

After a while, more Sikhs came.  Five or ten did not get any food.  Guru ji saw them and said: “go to Dyaal Das and grab his shirt.”  The Singhs went to Bhai Dyaal Das ji and said: “give us our Degh!”  The son of Gora took off his ring and said: “sell it and eat it.  I don’t want the Langar to be disrupted.”  One horse and one expensive shawl, Bhai Dyaal Das ji presented these to Guru ji.  He was forgiven and added to the Sangat.  He stayed with Guru ji and did his Seva.  The people did Darshan of Guru ji and went home.  The army ate the food.  They stayed there for many days in Damdama Sahib.  Many Sikhs came to have their wishes fulfilled.

One day, Guru ji took Bhai Dalla ji with him for hunting on their horses.  Quite far away, Guru ji saw a deer.  He mounted a Khapra arrow on his bow and killed the deer.  He laughed out loud afterwards.  His teeth shined through his lips.  Bhai Dalla said: “why did you laugh after killing the deer?”  Guru ji said: “he was a Sikh who was the treasurer.  He stole a lot of money.  He ruined a lot and took a lot of the money.  From that sin, he became a deer.  Listen Dala Brar, think about this, if someone takes even a little from others, in any way, their meat will be cut.  It will be made Kuttha, cooked and eaten.  Whoever steals money of others, or takes it with force and laughs in enjoyment; they become deer and goats.  The ones they owe, they eat their meat.  The one who steals from his master, they are in pain like this.  I tried to stop him but he didn’t.  That’s why I laughed, thinking about this.”

Guru ji was far from Damdama Sahib.  He realised it would take time to go back.  He saw Kikkar trees nearby and set up camp.  The Sikhs folded their hands and said: “Prabhoo ji we haven’t eaten anything.  We didn’t eat both times.  We are all very hungry.  How will we spend the night?  We need to go back in the morning.”  Satguru ji heard this and commanded: “climb the Kikkars that you see.  Shake them with your strength.  Eat as much as you want.  Satiate your hunger.”  The Singhs obeyed and went to the Kikkar trees.  They shook the trees with force.  Many types of foods fell from the trees.  Khurmay, Jaleebis, Ladoos and other foods fell.  Food fell like rain.  The Sikhs ate and satiated their hunger.  Some Singhs did not eat.  Prabhoo ji asked: “why are you not eating?  You had nothing to eat all day long.”  The wise Sikhs folded their hands and said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, you haven’t eaten anything.  How can we eat without you?”  Sri Guru ji was happy and said: “these Sikhs are Gurmukhs.  The ones that eat only take care of their stomachs.  The Manmukhs call themselves Sikhs but Sikhi is far from them.”  Everyone mounted their horses and came to the Dhera.

Satguru ji spent some days in Damdama like this.  Guru ji ate and slept one night.  The night was long.  The sun did not come up.  The people and animals were in pain.  They waited for morning.  Men and women sat.  Everyone was confused as to why it was not morning yet: “what is the reason for this?  Martand (the sun) has not come out in the sky.”  People were anxious.  They said the name of Sri Parmeshwar.  After the night was quite long, everyone was worried.  They all met Bhai Dalla ji and said: “the night is really long.  We don’t understand this.  Let’s go to Prabhoo ji and ask him.  He is omnipotent and will tell us.”  Bhai Dalla ji and others went to Guru ji.  They bowed to his lotus feet.  They sat down, worried.  They said: “we don’t understand what has happened to the night.”  Guru ji said: “this is the will of the Prabhoo.  The Devatas are jealous.  Sooraj and Inder are sitting in their places.  The other Devatas are sitting in their places.  Nobody is doing the work they are supposed to be doing.  Inder has refused to make it rain in the world.  Soorya is sitting in Svarga and refused to illuminate.  This is the reason why the night is so long.”  Bhai Dalla ji heard this and said: “Prabhoo ji, how can we live without rain?”  Satguru ji remained quiet.
