1-11 Mai Bhaago/ The Turks Go Back
Among the 40 Singhs was a lady named Mai Bhaago ji. She fought and killed many Turks with her spear. She was hit in the chest with a spear herself and fell. Guru ji was about 3 km away. He stood on the hill. The sign is still there today where he stood. He released a sharp arrow that was like a snake. He pulled it with his strength, making a really scary noise as it flew. It flew towards the Turks. The earth trembled. The Turks heard this noise, the sonic boom. They said: “what is this noise? We don’t understand. There aren’t any Singhs to fight or to lead them. What is this noise in the sky? We have killed the Guru and the Singhs. They are on the floor with their legs spread out. We should look for the Guru’s body. We will take it to the Emperor. He will be really happy with me. He has wanted to catch him from a long time. He wanted to kill him.” Wajeeda said this to his generals: “I did think the Guru was fighting. Go and find his body for the joy of the Emperor.” He said to Kapoora: “our men need water. Find water. They haven’t had water since they came. They haven’t had water all day.” Kapoora folded his hands and said: “Khan ji, there is no water here. If we walk ahead, there is water 30 Kos from here. If we go back, Navaab ji, there is water 10 Kos from here.” Wajeed Khan heard this and was surprised. He got worried and said: “Chaudhary, what’s the solution to this? Without water, nothing can be done. We are thirsty. The men will die from thirst. If we go back, the water is still far. Going ahead, it’s too far. Left and right, there is nothing.” Kapoora said: “there is no other solution. We need to ride fast with our horses. We should go to the water and save our lives. After a while, the men and horses will leave their Pranas from thirst. Their lips are dry and their faces are wilting. We can see this.” Wajeeda said: “listen Kapoora, I have 2 tasks to do after the battle: the dead Jathedaars, we need to find their dead bodies. We need to dig and bury their bodies. We can’t pick up the others. We can’t bury them. It will take one or 2 days to do this. Secondly, find the body of the Guru. This is a big effort. This was my mission. I need to do these 2 things. Without water, how can we do this?” Kapoora said: “what are you thinking about? The ones you want to bury in graves, what are we going to do with the live ones? If we ride fast, it will still take 3 hours to get to water. We can’t bury the dead in one day. There are dead bodies for miles from here. We can’t gather them in one place. We can’t do this. Sri Guru Gobind Singh ji is stubborn. He loves war and the battlefield. It has not been determined if he was killed or if he got away. His body hasn’t been found. We checked far from here. We should save our own lives. Let’s turn back and go on our way. As many Shasters we can collect of the dead, give the army the command to take them. We can’t bury the dead. There are many on the earth. We have taken the praise-worthy victory. It is good to go back. The ones who are dead, they are dead. They have gone to the Bahist (Heaven). The ones who were loyal, they lost their lives. Navaab ji, if you don’t do what I say, the men will die without being killed.” Wajeed Khan heard Kapoora and thought to himself: “he is right.” He said to his men: “Kapoora is wise. He speaks what is good for me.” The men turned their reins and went back. They all told everyone to go back.
The dead bodies were left. The injured were also left. They suffered to death without water. Without strength, they laid on the ground and died. Wajeed Khan was happy and said: “I killed the Guru now. The one who killed Lakhs of men; the one who gave sorrow to many; he is dead. He fought for a long time. He did a lot of killing. He first fought in the hills (of Bhangaani), he was saved with a little injury. He was stubborn and killed many. He showed his power and left. Listen Kapoora, in Anandpur he fought another war there, with joy. The 22 Pahari Rajas couldn’t do anything. They were defeated by the Guru. Kesri Chand and others died. He was killed on the field. That Guru has now been killed. The Khuddah gave me the victory. Bheem Chand and the other Pahari Rajas, who were angry with the Guru, they went to the Shah to complain. They took 3 Lakhs of armies to go. They ran away. The Emperor was angry that the Rajas ran away. Another army was collected. Zabardast came with me with Lakhs of men. We surrounded Anandpur, all around. The Guru left Anandpur and fought a fierce battle. He didn’t lose from anyone. We were 2.5 Kos away and he fired arrows from there. The Guru is really brave and strong. I have killed him now and taken the victory. When he left Anandpur, he came towards the Jungle Desh. The Turk Army chased him. He killed many of the Turk Army. He saved himself to Ropar. He passed Ropar. He then saw a million men. He stopped and didn’t go ahead or back. He went to Chamkaur and held is revolt in a fort. I killed that Guru now. Khuddah gave me the victory. There was a fierce battle fought in Chamkaur. He shot sharp arrows. Listen Chaudhary, the bodies piled up. He killed many men in every direction with his arrows. He had 40 hungry men with him. They fought with a million men. They killed Lakhs. The Turk army could have taken a fistful of sand and buried the fort. That’s how many men were there. Who has that much power to be so stubborn? He didn’t let anyone come close to fort. Everyone was really scared. Khwaja Mehmood got scared and hid. They all stayed far away, out of fear. They surrounded the fort hard but the Guru still left the fort. Nobody could see him. He then became the Peer of Uch, disguising himself. He walked slowly away from it all, making everyone bow to him with joy. The one that was hard to find, we killed him in battle today. The Emperor has been wanting to capture him, day and night. He wanted us to catch him or kill him. He was worried and wrote us many letters. The Khuddah gave us victory and so we have killed him.” The Khan was happy and speaking. He spoke to Kapoora on the way. They saw the place of water and set up camp. The fool did not know the truth and was happy over a false notion.
1-12 The Blessings of Guru ji/ Maha Singh Given the Boon
The Turks had quickly turned back, facing east. Satguru ji quickly came down from the Tibbi, the hill, he was on. He went towards the battlefield. He quickly came to the place of the pond. He got off his horse quickly. He looked at the dead Singhs’ faces and blessed them all with the joy and kingdoms of both worlds. He ran up to each of his Singhs and pointed to each while giving them boons: “20,000, 30,000, he will be a Sardar over Lakhs; the number of steps he took to go towards the enemy to fight, that’s how many times joy he will have! He will be the king on earth. He will rule with joy! He will be rich with a lot of wealth. Whatever desire he died with, he will get that plus he will be radiant many times over! He will be in joy in the Parlok. He gave his Pranas for me!” He sat beside his Singhs with love. He sat beside each Singh, cleaned their faces and praised them: “he is my warrior!” He cleaned their faces with his own Jamma. He wiped their faces with deep love, like a father touches a son’s face. He wiped their arms and hands with his shawl. Guru ji shed tears, seeing his Shaheed Singhs’ bodies. He would go to another Singh’s body and do the same. He gave them boons and wiped their bodies of dust. He would get up and then walk around to look at all of his Singhs. Among the 40 Shaheeds, there was one that was still alive. He was suffering from the many wounds on his body. He was waiting for death. The Master came close to the Singh. The Omniscient One sat down close to him. The Singh was taking deep and slow breaths. He had fought a lot and killed many enemies. He had a lot of wounds on his body. He was drenched in his blood. He was wishing for Guru ji’s Darshan before he died. Guru ji put the Singh’s head on his knee and wiped his face with his lotus hands. Guru ji was really happy with him. He wanted to give him countless boons and joy. He said to the Singh: “Maha Singh! Open your eyes now! You had the wish for my Darshan. Look at me! I am here! I am really happy with you! I will give you what you wish for!” Hearing Guru ji’s deep voice, Bhai Maha Singh ji opened his eyes and did Guru ji’s Darshan. He quickly opened his eyes and saw his beloved Guru sitting in front of him, during his final moments. His heart was filled with immense joy. His joy had no boundaries. It was not quantifiable, what he felt in his heart. It was like a really ill person receiving Amrit. Guru ji spoke again: “ask for something, my Singh! Tell me what is your wish. There is nothing I can’t give you. I won’t refuse anything. The kingdoms of the world with all its pleasures; if you ask for that, I will give you. If you want the 4 types of Muktis, I will give you. Ask, without delay, fear and sorrow. There is nothing more that exists from these that I can’t give you.” Bhai Maha Singh ji heard this and said: “Prabhoo ji, I have no more desires left now. I had your Darshan during my final moments. My heart is filled with great bliss. My desires have all died. My wishes are all fulfilled. Your form now resides in my heart.” Sri Guru ji was compassionate and said: “your Karma was the highest! You did the most supreme thing. I want you to ask for something. You must have some wish. I wish to give you! If you wish for life, I can protect your Pranas and give you life. Understand this, I am really happy with you. I have a wish in my heart to give you something. Don’t return my words; obey me and ask for something. Ask for what is in your heart. I will be in bliss after fulfilling your wish. This is why I keep asking you. Until I don’t give you something, I will not be at peace and joy.” Bhai Maha Singh ji heard this and thought to himself: “Prabhoo ji is really happy with me. The Bidhava that my people wrote, I will ask about that now since he is not angry. My whole Desh has committed a sin. They left the Satguru by fearing the Turks. By Guru ji’s small words, one can go to Hell or Heaven. His words can fill the empty and empty the filled. His words are never fruitless. My people left such an Omnipotent and all-powerful Lord. They were afraid of fighting on the battlefield. In the future, my people will be in pain because of these ill-fitted actions. The whole Majha Desh has become bad. Our foolish leaders wrote this Bidhava. To do good unto others is a great thing. I have heard this from many saints. To do good for one person carries a lot of blessings. To do good for a whole Desh, the rewards will be the greatest. There will be Lakhs of Sikhs of Guru ji. They will experience the kingdoms of earth. This boon I ask for will be good for all. There is nothing greater than this. The paper Bidhava that he has in his pocket, if he rips it then he will protect all of his Sikhs.” Bhai Maha Singh ji thought that this was the best thing to ask for. He said to Guru ji: “the Sangat of Madhur Desh did a terrible thing. Prabhoo ji, they broke their tie with you. If you want to grant my wish, then grant me this: have forgiveness and be compassionate. Connect them all with you again. May they be your Sikhs again and you remain their Guru. Sri Guru ji, give me this boon from your mouth.” Guru ji said: “the Sikhi that was broken has become spoiled. Why do you want to reconnect the ones that backed away due to fear? For yourself, ask for something else. I will give you what you want right away. I will give you with my own joy.” Bhai Maha Singh ji folded his hands and said: “Paatshaah, these servants are all your children. The children forget and earn sins. The father does not get angry with them. He sees them as his own and forgives them. He gives them wisdom and makes them aware. If you really want to give me a boon then reconnect the broken relationship. Say the words! I have no other wish than this. Give me this, oh Sodhi Supreme!” The Master heard the interesting words and was filled with bliss. His lotus eyes gleamed brightly. His eyes widened with joy. He said: “wow Khalsa! My Sikhs are great! My Khalsa is great! My Khalsa thinks of others first. My Khalsa is really generous! By your wish, I am reconnecting the broken tie! I will give that land kingdom and wealth!” Bhai Maha Singh ji said: “Prabhoo ji, take out that paper; the one we wrote. Take it out of your pocket. Show me and rip it up! I want to see my actions as a success.” Satguru ji heard this and quickly took out the Bidhava from his pocket. He spoke the illuminating and radiant words to Bhai Maha Singh ji: “here! Look! I am ripping the Bidhava!” After saying that, Guru ji ripped the Bidhava from the middle. Bhai Maha Singh ji saw this and was overjoyed. As the Bidhava ripped in the middle, Bhai Maha Singh ji saw Guru ji’s face, revealing through (like the sun shining through the parting of two clouds). Bhai Maha Singh ji said: “please give me permission to go to Parlok now, Prabhoo ji. Your Darshan has given me many rewards, which I will receive now.” Guru ji said: “Go Maha Singh! Go where my Lok is! You will live there forever without any pain or sorrow. You gave your Pranas and did an amazing thing for many. You will be rewarded heavily for this.” As soon as Satguru ji said this, Bhai Maha Singh ji left his body.
Prabhoo ji looked around the jungle. He said: “listen Brars: pick up the bodies of the 40 Singhs. Collect firewood and make one big pyre. Cremate the Shaheed Singhs’ bodies in one place. Don’t delay.” The Singhs with Guru ji heard this and quickly collected dry wood. They found all of the Singhs’ bodies and brought them to one place. The bodies of the Shaheeds were among many of the dead Turks. They had all fought and died among the Turks, where the great battle had taken place on the field. Many Singhs picked the bodies and put them in one big pyre. They placed a lot of firewood on top and lit the pyre on fire. Satguru ji stood by as all of the Singhs’ bodies burned.
Guru ji then praised the glory of the pond of Khidrana. Sri Guru ji praised it: “where one Rishi Sadhoo does a tapp and then dies, that place is know, to be holy by the world. In this spot, many Singhs with immense bravery fought the Turks by leaving their minds and bodies. On the Makkar Sankranti, when the sun is in Makkar Rashi, on the Shangrand of Maghi; whoever bathes in this Sarovar of Khidrana, their wishes will be fulfilled. The filth of their sins will be washed away. Whoever bows to this Shaheed Ganj and gives money, their prosperity will grow by the day. This place will hence be known as “Mukatsar.” Nobody will call it Khidrana anymore. In this place, 40 Sikhs received Mukti, who were without sins and did a great effort! For this reason, this place I call Mukatsar. Whoever bathes here, their sins will be washed away.” Sri Guru ji praised the glory of the place. It is still illuminating in the world today.
The names of the 40 Muktas are listed as follows: (1). Bhai Bhag Singh (2). Bhai Dilbag Singh (3). Bhai Mann Singh (4). Bhai Nidhan Singh (5). Bhai Kharbara Singh (6). Bhai Darbara Singh (7). 1-13 Mai Bhaago/ Blessing the Chirjivi
As Guru ji stood and watched the cremation of the Singhs, one Singh came to Guru ji. He folded his hands and said: “there is a woman in the field. It seems as though she fought against the Turks. She has many wounds on her body. She is alive. She is not fatally wounded. Sri Prabhoo ji, come see who she is.” Guru ji heard this and smiled. He walked slowly to where the woman was. She had fallen into the bushes after being wounded. Her clothes were ripped. She had a lot of wounds and cuts on her body. Satguru ji stood in front of her. He smiled and said: “Bhaago, you came to the Peer for the wish of sons. You took off your soothan (womanly attire) and put on the clothes of men. You fought bravely.” Guru ji looked at her with blessings and compassion. He casted his vision on Mai Bhaago ji and made the pain of the wounds go away. Guru ji said: “get up and come with me. All of your wishes will be fulfilled.” Mai Bhaago ji was painless. She got up and bowed to Guru ji. She was in bless. She said: “when the Sikhs left from Majha, coming for your Darshan, I left from Chabal. At that time, I had a wish for a son. I came to you for that wish. When I saw the opportunity to fight, I decided to come and fight for you. My heart had eagerness to fight for the Guru. I came here with the Singhs and fought against the Turks. I had a heavy spear with me. When the enemy came close to me, I used all my strength and pierced his chests. One Turk was rung on to my spear and so I threw him off his horse. Other Turks came to me with their swords. They swung their swords at me but you saved me by extending your hand forward. Now I have no more wishes. I wish to stay in the Satguru’s Sangat. I have no care for the world’s opinion. I don’t care for my honour (I will stay in the clothes of men and serve as a warrior). Guru ji was really happy and said: “you have a good wish in your heart. You will be free from birth and death. You denounced the honour (ego) and care of what the world says.”
Guru ji completed all the tasks and thought about Bhai Maha Singh ji’s words: “Maha Singh did a great thing. He didn’t ask for anything for himself. He reconnected the separated Sangat. They have all joined the Guru’s Pangat.” Guru ji said to the others with him: “he did a great thing! The foundations of Gursikhi are deep and strong. It was spoiled and damaged. There was not going to be a chance to meet them again. They gave their lives to keep the foundations. To be so generous, he didn’t care for himself and he asked to keep the Gursikhi of his Desh; such are my oldest Sikhs. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji and other Gurus lived there. The Sikhs of that area did not pass the tests. They had renounced Sikhi and I broke them off. Maha Singh became a true and powerful Singh and took a boon for his Desh. He saved the people of his Desh.” Sri Prabhoo ji said this many times. He thought of the reconnecting of the broken ones, many times in his heart. He thought of the past and future. He thought of what happened and was really happy.
Khana returned to Kapoora. He didn’t speak of Guru ji’s greatness. He stayed quiet and joined the army. When Guru ji would come, everything would be known. Satguru ji saw the place as without water and travelled on. The Brar servants he had, he said to them: “let’s go on ahead. There is only jungle here. Let’s go where there is clean water. Let’s go quickly and set up camp.” After saying this, Guru ji made his horse run. As they travelled, Guru ji saw an inn. There was a nice Sarovar there. Guru ji set up the camp near the pond. Everyone tied their horses and collected grass. The Singhs walked around. There was an Ashram of a Sadhoo there. The Sadhoo asked his servants: “across the pond, I can hear some people. Who are they and where are they from? Where are they going?” One of his servants said: “the Marela (killer) Guru has come. He battled fierce wars with the Turks. He killed thousands of them, many times.” The Sadhoo heard this and asked: “how old is the Guru? How many Sikh servants does he have? He has just finished a battle.”
One Singh came to the Sadhoo and answered the Sadhoo’s questions: “he is more than 30 but less than 40.” The Sadhoo heard this and spoke of his doubt: “what do I need from such a Guru? He hasn’t done any Sadhana. His mind is probably not calm yet.” The Singh heard this and didn’t like the Sadhoo’s objection. When he came to Satguru ji, he told him what the Sadhoo said. Guru ji said: “the Sadhoo is really old and he is proud of his great age.” The Sadhoo’s students came to Guru ji and did his Darshan. They then sat down. The Sikhs asked Satguru ji: “how old is the Sadhoo that he is so proud of his age? He spoke words of doubt on your age.” Guru ji said: “he is 5,026 (or 5,120) years old. He holds his breath and goes into Samadhi for many years at a time. He only sometimes comes out of his Samadhi. He speaks and walks around.” The students were amazed to hear this. They came back to their Guru Sadhoo. They said to him: “oh Mahant ji, the Sikhs told their Guru what you said about him. Their Guru laughed and said: “the Sadhoo is proud of his age.” The Singhs asked about your age and then the Guru spoke of your age: “he is 5,026 (or 5,120) years old.” We heard this when we went there.” The Sadhoo heard this and was amazed: “he is so young but so wise! The Guru is omnipotent and filled with all the powers. I should certainly do his Darshan.” The Sadhoo got up right away. He took his cane and walked slowly towards Guru ji.
Guru ji had the Divaan in session. The Singhs were doing the Rehraas. The Sadhoo stood by till then. Guru ji looked towards the Sadhoo and said: “Sadho, sit down! Why are you standing?” The Sadhoo heard this and bowed to Guru ji. He sat among the Singhs. He listened to the Paath of Rehraas with love. When the Ardaas was completed, the Sadhoo folded his hands and said: “connect me to your lotus feet. Make me your Sikh and show me my real form. I am a sacrifice unto your Darshan. You are omnipotent and filled with unlimited powers.” Sri Prabhoo ji smiled and said: “you are already a Sikh. You have done the Sadhanas of Kaival Mukti. You have done deep Sadhanas. Bow to the Akaal Purakh. As you bow, your bonds will be broken.” Prabhoo ji casted a sight of blessings onto the Sadhoo. The Sadhoo’s heart was filled with the light. It was like millions of suns came up in his heart. The Sadhoo saw his Aatma and then bowed to Guru ji’s feet, over and over again. He knew the Guru’s greatness and was filled with bliss. He spoke with deep faith: “you have such a deep Gyaan at such a young age.” Sri Satguru ji heard this and said: “you just kept an old pair of clothes. I have put on a new set of clothes. (Guru ji pointed towards his 72 Chownkris of Tapp) When somebody wears new clothes, it makes the body look beautiful.” The Sadhoo bowed and sat down, understanding that Guru ji had done many Yugas of Tapp. He was the Avatar of Parmeshwar. The Singhs then asked the Sadhoo: “you have lived a long time. Tell us something.” The Sadhoo said: “let me tell you of a time when I spent many years in Samadhi. When I opened my eyes, I couldn’t see any man or woman. I travelled a little bit and saw a person. I asked him: “what happened? I don’t see anyone.” The person said: “there was a drought that killed everyone. Only a few survived. The drought was for 12 years. Now it rained, which ended the drought. People are slowly increasing now.” I spent a lot of time like this. Many times, people fought and died. Many times, they were ruined and re-established. Many states I saw. I saw a lot of times on earth.” Guru ji was happy with him. Guru ji destroyed his ego and doubts. The Sadhoo bowed his head and went back to his Ashram. Satguru ji ate and slept the night. At Amritvela, he awoke and did his daily cleansing routines.
1-14 The Attire of the Blanket/ Blessing the Dogras/ Bazeedpur
Satguru ji got ready as his horse was saddled. The Brar Singhs got ready as well. They all travelled through the jungle. When Sri Prabhoo ji crossed Nauthehay Village, the people of the village came to see Guru ji. They folded their hands and said: “you killed the armies of the Badshah. Please don’t set up camp here. Go and set up your camp in the next village. We are making a request to you. We fear the Emperor everyday.” Guru ji blessed the people and went on ahead. Guru ji set up camp ahead where Fateh Samoo Villages were. Guru ji got off his horse and had it rest. Guru ji casually walked around the area. He looked around to see where was a good place to set up camp. At that time, the people of Punj Hari Ke came and brought a Loongi and a thick blanket as gifts. They showed the items and bowed their necks. They placed the gifts in front of Guru ji and bowed their hands. They said: “Prabhoo ji, these villages are ours. We are blessed to have had your Darshan.” Guru ji saw the Loongi and picked it up. He tied the Loongi around his waist. He opened up the thick blanket and put it on his shoulders, tying it by the ends. He dressed like the people of the area. Guru ji looked great standing there. Bhai Maan Singh ji said to Sri Prabhoo ji: “you did a task worthy of Tankhaa (penalty- as the Khalsa is not permitted to wear Loongis or Chadras).” Sri Prabhoo ji smiled and said: “the Khalsa is becoming aware by the day.” Guru ji then said: “the dress is according to the Desh. I am wearing the Loongi and the blanket.” Guru ji then looked towards the farmers of Hari Ke and commanded: “at night, stay all around the camp with alertness. Stay awake all night and keep guard. Be in attention and fasten your weapons. Keep guard all night long.” The proud and egotistical people of Hari Ke heard this and said: “we are not afraid of anyone here. Don’t be afraid or in doubt about anything. Sleep the night without fear.” Guru ji then said: “do what I say for sure. It’s important. It is important to guard the area tonight.” The fools did not obey Guru ji’s words. They said: “there is no fear in our villages. Sleep the night with peace. Don’t have any doubts in your mind.” Satguru ji heard this and explained: “there are many Singhs with me. When they have the Sukha, they become carefree Mastanas. They don’t stay awake at night. The many Brar servants that are with me, they are like Rath Dhaarvis. They have no love in their minds to keep guard. They are fearless though. They do work as they please.” The people of Hari Ke heard Guru ji’s words and obeyed: “we will keep guard at night.” They bowed and went to their homes. The people of Hari Ke had servants who were Dogras. The people said to the Dogras: “go to Guru ji’s camp, taking shifts. Keep guard while staying awake. Don’t sleep all night.”
Satguru ji ate at night and slept. The Singhs all went to sleep in peace. The Dogras came and stayed at the camp. They stood all around Guru ji’s tent. After about 3 hours, Guru ji spoke out loud: “is there someone from Har Ki standing guard? Is there someone awake and standing there?” The people spoke: “we Dogras are here. We were sent to guard your tent. We are all alert and awake. Guru Bhagvan ji you can sleep.” Guru ji wanted to give them some blessings. The blessings could not be received without good Karma. When it was midnight, Prabhoo ji spoke out loud: “did someone from Hari Ke come or not? Did someone come to get news?” The Dogras said: “their servants, the Dogras are here and standing guard. We are awake and alert. The people from Hari Ke drink alcohol at night. They are sleeping in their homes in joy. Just as we are their servants, we are also your servants. We are standing guard in attention.” They all went quiet and spent the night.
When it was Amritvela, Guru ji spoke: “did someone from Hari Ke come or not? Did they come to take news of the guards or not?” The Dogras said: “we are here and standing guard with attention. Who from Hari Ke would come at this time? They are drunk with alcohol and sleeping in their homes at this time. We are standing guard in your presence. Command us and we will do as you say. We will do your Seva in every way. We Dogras are obedient to you.” Guru ji heard the humble words and gave them a boon: “stay settled near the river. I give you the new leadership. The land near the shores of the river, they will be your Desh under your command.” The Dogras heard the blessing words. They came close to Guru ji and bowed to his feet. They said: “your words are always permanent. You bless whoever comes to you with humility.” Since then, the lands came under the Dogras. The villages grew. The foolish people of Hari Ke could not take Guru ji’s boons. Guru ji wanted to bless them. Guru ji bathed at that time and got ready. Everyone got ready and set off.
After passing many Kos, they came to a thick jungle. There was a huge Beri tree there. Guru ji had the camp set up near the tree. They all stayed one night there. Prabhoo ji set off the next morning. They travelled for many more Kos. They came to a place called Wajeedpura (Bazeedpur). The whole army set up camp there. The Singhs tied their horses and came to Guru ji and said: “Paatshaah, we are here. This is the Kasoor area. 22 Naubats sound here of Kasoor. Many Pathaans live here with their armies.” Sri Guru ji said: “in the future, the radiance of the Turks will be destroyed. These areas of Multan, Kanay and Kach; many Singhs will live here. Many Naubats of mine will sound there. It will just be a few days when this happens.” As Guru ji was standing and saying this, a Teetar bird made a noise. Guru ji heard this and said: “if you have spoken then I have found you.” Guru ji got on his horse and set off quickly to find the Teetar. Guru ji sent his hawk after the Teetar but the hawk didn’t attack it. Guru ji then sent his dogs after it. The dogs saw the Teetar and ran after it. The Teetar hid in the bushes. The dogs barked and made the Teetar come out. As it came out, it flew upwards. Guru then had the Singhs chase the Teetar. The Master went himself as well. The Teetar flew fast and hard. When it got tired, it hid in the bushes. Many tried to look for it. It would fly away when found. It would hide and the Singhs would scold it and take it out of the bushes, while smacking their sticks. They had all travelled many Kos like this. The horses got tired. The Teetar got caught with a lot of effort. Guru ji had the bird’s feathers cut off and had the hawk released on it. The hawk was going to eat the Teetar alive. The hawk bit off the flesh and ate the Teetar. It gave the Teetar a lot of pain. Guru ji stood by and watched. The hawk ate the Teetar piece by piece. Bhai Dhaan Singh ji saw this and said: “Prabhoo ji you are quite fierce and harsh. Nobody can say anything in front of you. You did a very harsh thing. We ran a long way. This wasn’t a lion that we were to hunt. We ran after one Teetar. You made all these horses tired, running after it. If you wanted to hunt, we could have killed many Teetars and rabbits.” Sri Guru ji said: “Dhaan Singh, listen why I had it killed: I had no wish to hunt it. I had a task with him.” Bhai Dhaan Singh ji heard Guru ji’s big task. He said: “Paatshaah, tell us the whole story. Why did you make everyone run after him for so long?” Sri Guru ji said: “listen to the task: this Teetar was a Jaat and this hawk was a Baaniya. They were humans in their last life. The Jaat took a loan from the Baaniya. He took the loan and moved to another village. One day the Baaniya caught the Jaat and said: “I won’t let you go till you pay my loan back. You cheated me.” The Jaat said: “let me go right now. I will return your money to you.” The Baaniya said: “give me a reference. You can leave then.” The Jaat said: “who is my reference? Only the Guru is my reference. There is nobody else here.” The Baaniya heard this and said: “keep your Dharma. The Guru can be your reference.” He used me as a reference and he was released. He didn’t give the money back and died. This hawk knew everything because he touched my hand. He knew everything but he didn’t kill the Teetar for this reason. I was the reference so I had to catch the Teetar. I fulfilled my reference. The hawk ate him alive, piece by piece.” Bhai Dhaan Singh ji heard this and grabbed Prabhoo ji’s feet. He said: “I spoke in front of you. I had forgotten, Guru ji. Forgive me. I am your obedient servant.” Guru ji said: “Dhaan Singh, why are you worrying? You only asked me a question and I answered it.” Bhai Dhaan Singh ji bowed his head and said: “I only want your happiness.” Guru ji came back to the Dhera and ate. He then slept the night.
1-15 Blessing Ghogar/ Hukam Nath
Satguru ji slept the night and bathed in the morning after waking up. He had his horse saddled and set off for the travels. The 3 spikes that Guru ji had tied his horse to, they weren’t pulled out by the Sikhs. The 3 spikes later became green and grew to become Jandh trees. They are still standing tall and proud in the modern day. It is known as Gurusar today. The Sikh Sangat comes to bow there. Their sins are washed away when they come to do the Darshan of the place.
Sri Prabhoo ji travelled and came back to Mukatsar. He set up a Dhera there again. He had spoken of the future: “the Sikhs will come to bathe here. They will be rewarded.” Guru ji ate and spent the night. He woke up in the morning and bathed. They then all set off again. They soon came to the village Rupaanay. He got off his horse and had his Sukha and Afeem Degh. He walked around with his bow and arrow in hand. There was a high place there. There was a Ghogar bird on top of a hill. Guru ji shot the bird with his arrow. Bhai Jora Singh ji was standing by. He said: “Prabhoo ji, you killed the Ghogar. Why did you kill it? It is of no use. Nobody eats its flesh. It will remain there. Who will eat it? What was the reason you killed it? Paatshaah Prabhoo ji, please tell me.” Sri Guru ji said to him: “this person got the body of a Ghogar. He used to be a human king. Among his subjects was a poor Sikh. He lived there for a long time. One day, the Sikh thought to himself: “I wish to prepare food for the Guru.” He prepared many types of foods for Sikhs. He invited the other Sikhs in his city. The king was a Sikh as well. He accepted the invitation as well. Everyone gathered and came to the poor Sikh’s home. They all did Ardaas and began to eat the food. The Sikh had a young daughter. The king saw the young girl and wanted to take her.
The Raja went home at night and sent his men to call the poor Sikh’s daughter. When the Raja’s men came to call upon the young girl, the poor Sikh had figured out the corruption of the Raja’s wisdom. He was upset. There was nothing he could do. The daughter saw her father’s upset face and said: “why are you so upset? Come with me and we will go to the Raja. The Guru will do well. Don’t worry.” The young girl took her father and went to the Raja’s home. She said: “today is not a good time to come. I will come tomorrow. You won’t need to call for me. I will come myself. Don’t send your men to my home. If I don’t do this, it will be an act of Adharma and I will be in pain.” The Raja head this and said: “don’t deceive me. Don’t play one of your Triya Chariters (womanly tricks). If you lie than you will be punished by my command.” The girl said: “I won’t stay at home tomorrow so how would you punish me?” The girl came back home with her father. At night, she ate poison. As she was dying, she cursed the Raja: “this Raja is a big sinner and is not deserving of ruling his kingdom. He will be a Ghogar and eat feces and dirt. He will be alone. Nobody will be close to him. The sin that you wished to do, this is your punishment.” The girl left her body. After a few days, the Raja died. He took 100 births as Ghogars. He was my Sikh though so I had to save him.” When Prabhoo ji said the whole story of the Ghogar, Bhai Jora Singh ji and others were amazed and said: “Dhan, Dhan!” Everyone ate at night and went to sleep.
In the morning, everyone headed out by saddling their horses. Prabhoo ji travelled on his horse. The army of Brars followed behind. Guru ji kept many Brars as employees. Many warrior Singhs came to enlist in Guru ji’s army. They came to do his Darshan and stayed to join the army. Guru ji’s personal and paid army grew by the day. The Master travelled to new villages everyday. Guru ji passed many Kos. Guru ji reached the village Thaheri and set up camp. The horses were all tied and grass was collected. Firewood was collected. There was a powerful Nath that lived in Thaheri. His name was Hukam Nath. He had built his Ashram there. He had met Guru ji before once. He had ego in his mind and said: “you call yourself a Guru in the world and must have some powers. If you have some powers then show me. Without seeing the powers, I can’t have faith in you.” Guru ji heard this and said to him: “when I come to your place and set up a Dhera, then I will show you. You should be ready then. Don’t ask me to show you anything right now.” Guru ji came to Thaheri and remembered what he had said to him: “this person wants to see miracles.” The Nath was sitting in his place when Guru ji travelled by with his army. Guru ji took out an arrow from his quiver. He made the arrow touch the ground and touched the Nath’s forehead with it. He then said: “Hukam Nath, tell me your story. Are you well with bliss?” The Nath heard this and said: “Guru Gobind Singh ji, I bow to you. I was well before but now you pulled all my powers away by touching my head with your arrow.” Guru ji said: “let’s go see a new place. Let’s go to Delhi or Lahore. We will go and come back in some time. If you like this, we can go.” The Nath said: “this wish is fruitless now. You didn’t leave me with any powers. I can’t do anything now. You took out everything. You made me empty and useless.” Satguru ji said: “I fulfilled your wish of seeing my powers. I showed you. This is your own fault. Stay here now. You can receive what you wish for.” The Nath remained quiet, knowing Guru ji’s words as the truth. He was filled with ego and couldn’t ask for his powers back. He had a beautiful Math nearby. The Math had the grave of Kassab Bhatti in it. Guru ji saw that and praised it. He said: “this is a nice place.” Bhai Maan Singh ji and others heard this. They were Vivekis by doing Prabhoo ji’s Sangat. They said: “you praised the place of a Turk so you are deserving of Tankhaa. You said in the Rehit: “Ghor Mani Math bhool na maanay – don’t follow the graves, crypts and Maths even by mistake.” Guru ji heard the Vivek of the Khalsa and accepted his fault (which was his way of testing the Khalsa). He presented 25 silver coins as a Tankhaa (penalty), which was set by the Khalsa. Bhai Dhaan Singh ji folded his hands and said: “what type of tradition was this? You showed us an unorthodox thing.” Sri Prabhoo ji said: “I wanted to teach the Khalsa, so the giving and receiving of Tankhaa can take place. This tradition will happen in the Khalsa now.” Satguru ji then took his quiver off his shoulder. He gave his quiver and bow to a servant. There were 3 Jandh trees coming out of one root there. Guru ji had the Dhera set near there. Guru ji hung his weapons on the Jandh at a high place. Many Sikhs come there today to see the Jandh trees. When they come and bow with wishes in their heart, they are all fulfilled.
Hukam Nath had many cows which he milked on time everyday. The calves were among the cows. By the Nath’s powers, he possessed the calves so they wouldn’t drink the milk of the cows. He would take a huge clay pot and cook a lot of Khichdee in it. He would bust the pot to as many pieces as people there would be with the Nath. He lost all his powers. That day, the calves all drank the milk of the cows. His pot of Khichdee did not divide into pieces like it used to. Guru ji stayed there for one day. The Nath left the village the next day. He took his cows and calves. He left all of his other possessions. He left his pots, clothes and horses. He left his drinking pots. He went and settled in a village named Ratiya. He didn’t ask for forgiveness from Prabhoo ji. Guru Bhagavan ji stayed in the same place. There was a Rora Baniya that lived there. He brought food for Guru ji and Guru ji was happy with him. He asked about the Nath: “what did he do to you? He left this place and went somewhere else. He left all of his belongings.” Sri Prabhoo ji told the Baniya everything: “he was too proud of his powers. I took his powers out with an arrow. He was really embarrassed so he left from here. He didn’t come back to meet me nor did he ask for forgiveness. Because of ego, he lost his powers.”
