9-36 The Decision to go to Delhi

After having discussions in the whole court, the senior Sikhs; the Bedi, Trehan, Bhalla and Sodhi Bawas said: “it is hard to go to Aurangzeb.  There are many cons in going.  It is possible to lose life, as he is an enemy of the Hindu Dharma.  There is no one to help in his court.  Everyone in Delhi is our enemy.  No one can save us there.  No one will listen to our point of view.  One needs a lot of enthusiasm to go there.  We don’t have that kind of power or will to go.  It is best if you go, Satguru ji.  You are the all-powerful, Omnipotent one.  Your radiance is great.  There is no one in comparison to you.  No one is as powerful as you.  Doing your Simran gives blessings.  Your name destroys many obstacles and problems.  Wherever you go, you will be victorious.  No one can tolerate your radiance.  It is best that you go for these reasons.  Wherever you go, you can complete all the tasks.  You should go and break the sinner’s ego.  Your words are never fruitless.  The Turk king is corrupt and egotistical.  The Chaugata is filled with ego.  We can go anywhere else.  We can’t go there.  Wherever you would send us, we would go.  Just not there.  We could win with our wisdom, strength and power.  We would succeed in any other task.  You are omnipotent and able.  Whosever head you place your hand on, you can make them powerful. You can do anything you wish for.  Nobody can face you.  Your blessed Sikh can scare Inder.  Aurangzeb is nothing.  Devatas and Devis would be afraid of the Sikh whom you bless.  Only you are able to go.  Anyone else would get scared.  Nobody has the courage to go.”

Guru Har Rai Sahib ji heard these words.  He was without fear.  He spoke with patience: “I have taken on a determination that I will not give my Darshan to this Malaich.  I don’t want to see him.  For this reason, I can’t go to Delhi.  I don’t want to meet him nor speak to him.  Understand this.  This is my determination.  I will fulfill this Dharma.  I am not under his influence.  First of all, he is born in the home of Turks who do not speak of the Adhyatam Gyaan.  Secondly, he doesn’t even follow his own religion.  He is the enemy of the world because he is the enemy of saints.  He killed people for their religion.  Thirdly, he killed his own father and brothers.  Fourthly, he gives pain to the saints.  He has killed many saints.  Fifthly, he killed the Brahmgyaani saint and slept in peace in his home, like nothing happened.  The saint named Sarmad, he was a Brahmgyaani.  He was the form of the all-powerful Prabhoo who could do what he wanted to.  He has sinned gravely.  His hands are red with the blood of saints and Teeraths.  Which saint would want to meet this sinner?  He won’t be forgiven.  He is cursed by saints.  He is corrupt-minded.  He is a foolish sinner.  He is stubborn who thinks that only his religion is the best.  He will destroy his own family and pull the roots of the Mughals in the land.  Nobody from our side has gone there.  What will he do if we don’t go?  The fool will get angry and send an army to fight.  He will show his strength and his ego.  We will fight him without any fear.  We will use rifles, arrows, spears, cannons and swords to destroy his army.  They will remember our slaps.  We will go to the Jungle Desh to set up a Dhera.  We will live there in peace.  They won’t be able to overpower us there.  The Sikhs from that area will come to fight.”

The whole court heard this.  They folded their hands and said: “whatever you do will be good.  You can make a good thing out of a bad one.  We still think in our minds that you should avoid conflict.  We should keep the peace with the Emperor.  Your Dhera is radiant in Kiratpur.  It should stay here.  Your father and grandfather lived here.  Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji left his body from here.  Sri Baba Gurditta ji, the patient one, his cremation was done here as well.  You should live here with peace.  The Sutlej shore is here.  This place is beautiful.  There are beautiful mountains here with valleys and meadows.  The grass is great for horses here.  Fruits, water and flowers are in abundance here.  Why do you wish to leave this place?  If there is a battle, there will be a lot of damages.  The fight will get worse.  This is our opinion.  All of the Sikhs, servants and warriors feel this way and have this plea for you: let’s keep peace and not leave this area.  Everything is in your house.  You can keep the peace.  You can do as you wish.  You are the supreme.”  In this way, the discussions happened.

As the discussions were happening, the eldest son of Guru Har Rai ji, Baba Ram Rai ji, walked into the court.  He casually bowed to his father and sat near Guru ji’s feet.  He looked around and saw the court of saints and elders.  He said: “what’s this joyous occasion today?  All of the Sahibzadas are here today!  The Bedis, Trehans, and Bhallas are here.  The Sodhis are here, looking like swans.  What task needs to be done?  Everyone has come and gathered in one place today.”  The court heard this.  One of the Bedis said: “Nauranga the sinner, his Tapp has spread everywhere.  He wishes to see miracles.  He has called Guru ji to Delhi.  He wants to see his powers.  The enemies of the Hindus have gathered in Delhi and want to make their Deen spread.  They debate and place many doubts in everyone.  They make fun of other religions.  The Mullahs and Qazis are with Aurangzeb.  They make many arguments from their books.  The court of the sinners is united.  Someone needs to go and show them miracles.  That person needs to overpower them his own power.  He needs to win the court and make them quiet.  This is what we were all discussing.  Who should we send?”  Sri Ram Rai ji said: “why shouldn’t we go?  We should surely go.  Without going it won’t work.  Think about this and decide to go.  Guru Nanak Dev ji’s powers should be shown.  It won’t be wise not to go.  People will think we are scared or don’t have powers.  This story won’t finish.  The Badshah will keep insisting.  He is stubborn.”  He spoke with wisdom.  His words were true.  Everyone was surprised to hear Baba Ram Rai ji’s wise words.  He was around 12 years old then.  He was very handsome.

The people in the court spoke with sharp eyes: “if you have the patience and confidence, why don’t you go to Aurangzeb?  Go and supress the egos of the sinners.  Be the support of everyone.  Keep our honour.  Keep the honour of the Guru’s home.  There is nothing else to think about.  If you can complete this task, nobody else needs to go.  You are the eldest son of Satguru ji.  You are eligible in every way.  This is not a new thing to see.  The dogs of the Guru have powers.  You are his son.  Baba Atal Rai ji was powerful like you.  It is not hidden that the sons of the Gurus are powerful.  The whole Sangat and Guru ji look towards you.  Everyone wishes for you to go.”  Baba Ram Rai ji thought to himself: “they all want to send me to destroy the ego and radiance of the Turk Emperor.”  Baba Ram Rai ji understood this and spoke with his hands folded: “if this is what all of you want, I will go and show the Turks the miracles.  I will show him what he wishes to see.  Satguru Pitha ji can bless me and I will go.  If Pitha ji thinks I am eligible to go, I will go with joy.  I need all of your blessings.  I will do the tasks that Aurangzeb wants to see.  I need Satguru ji’s blessings to win this task.  You are the elders.  Think about this and tell me if I should go.  If I go, nobody will listen to my words or arguments.  I will need powers for miracles there.  Without these powers, it won’t work.  Aurangzeb is the enemy of the Dharma.  They think our Dharma is bad.  It will be difficult to live there.  If I have the powers, then I can do what I want.  If the Turk emperor asks me to do something, I will have to show him miracles.  If I can’t show him miracles, they will think we are nothing.  I will have to fulfill his wishes.  Otherwise, it will be bad.”  What Baba Ram Rai ji said, everyone heard this and praised him, seeing him as a wise person.  They said: “Sri Ram Rai ji has spoken wise words.  Without powers, it is impossible to go there.  How will he go without powers?”

9-37 Sri Ram Rai arrives in Delhi

Pitha Guru Har Rai ji heard his son’s words and was happy.  This task was important.  Seeing the task at hand, Guru Har Rai ji said to Baba Ram Rai ji: “take all of the powers of Guru Nanak Dev ji.  Nobody will be able to block them.  I will live on your tongue.  Whatever comes from your mouth will become reality right away.  It will never be a miss.  Nobody will be able to block it.  Whatever can never stop, you will be able to stop it.  Whatever doesn’t move, you will me able to move it.  Whatever stays filled, you will be able to empty it.  Whatever is empty, you will be able to fill it.  Wherever there are mirages, no water only sand; your words will make it into a vast ocean.  Sri Satguru Nanak Dev ji is omnipotent.  He is infinite.  He is all-powerful.  All the powers are in his hands.  He is the form of Shakti.  He is infinite, indescribable and amazing.  The whole universe is in his command.  His command is obeyed everywhere.  It cannot be disobeyed.  I give you these powers in your words.  What you say will be reality.  You can do whatever you want to without any doubt or fear.  Whatever word comes from your mouth, whether good or bad, it won’t be blocked.  Whenever and whatever you say; will become true.”  In this way, Guru ji praised the powers of Guru Nanak Dev ji.  He gave him confidence.  He told him to have faith in Guru Nanak Dev ji.  He spoke again to make him determined: “Nauranga is very troublesome.  The whole world knows this.  He has jealousy towards the Guru’s home.  In any conversation within his court, if someone with a corrupt mind raises a doubt, portrays ego and pride towards their own religion and doubts Guru Nanak Dev ji; hearing this, don’t give in to their level to make them happy.  Don’t agree with them where the Guru’s home is shown lower.  Keep patience, if they speak against the Guru.  Speak up without fear.  Your words will become true.  Nobody will be able to reverse your words.  Think of Guru ji and speak without fear.  You will be praised in many ways.  Whoever doesn’t trust their own ability, they are always fawning to everyone.  Have faith on the power of the Satguru.  Speak without fear.  Only the weak are full of doubt.  The complete one never wobbles.  I have given you the unlimited treasures of the Guru.  Spend it as much as you wish to.  Your command will be followed in the 3 Loks.  Devatas, humans, Nagas, and others will hear your words and love them.  They will fulfill your words right away.  Nobody will reverse your words.”  Sri Ram Rai ji heard this and was really happy.  He said: “Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is Dhan.  His radiance is the greatest in all 3 Loks.  He can do what he wishes to.  He can stabilize or make anything unstable.”  He bowed to his father and got ready to go to Delhi.

Palanquins and chariots were prepared.  The horses were massaged and readied.  The horses were attached to the chariots.  The preparations were done at night as Baba Ram Rai ji was going to leave in the morning.  Bhai Behlo ji’s great grandsons, Bhai Gurdas ji and Bhai Tara Chand ji (the great archer) got ready to go with Baba Ram Rai ji.  Guru Har Rai ji spoke to these two Masands and prepared them.  Other servants were sent with his son.  Soldiers were sent.  Satguru ji gave them wisdom.  Many chariots were prepared.  Baba ji’s chariot was decked in zarri.  It shined.  The horses were not attached at night.  The chariot was on its own.  The horses were to be saddled in the morning.

In the morning, Baba Ram Rai ji got on top of his beautiful chariot.  Guru Har Rai ji came as well.  Thousands were there.  Baba Ram Rai ji was going to Delhi on that chariot.  Everyone wanted to see it.  Baba Ram Rai ji spoke from his mouth: “go ahead!”  The chariot began to move right away.  It started slowly and then picked up speed.  It travelled through the streets of Kiratpur without any horses.  Baba Ram Rai ji came back to his spot after some time.  Everyone was amazed to see this and happy too.  The people saw the chariot move without horses.  They said: “Dhan Dhan Satguru.”  Where Guru Har Rai ji was, many Sikhs were there.  Baba Ram Rai ji showed his powers and made everyone surprised.  Satguru Har Rai ji said: “you will have opportunities to show your power.  You should spend the powers when needed.  You haven’t even left the city yet.  Be patient.  Show the powers where needed.  There was no need to show your power now.  You made the chariot move without horses.  It was not needed.”  Baba Ram Rai ji said: “I just wanted to test my powers.  I believe now.  I won’t be afraid wherever I go.  I trust myself now.  Whatever I say will become true.  May my words never go empty.”

The horses came and were attached to Baba Ram Rai ji’s chariot.  The empty horses were prepared as substitutes.  Palanquins and carts were prepared.  Over 100 other Sikhs and servants went with him.  Some Sangat went too.  Chaur servants went too.  The Chaurs looked like swans.  Baba Ram Rai ji bowed to his mothers.  They all bid him farewell.  Baba Ram Rai ji bowed to his father.  He bowed to other elders as well.  He bowed to all of the places in Kiratpur of his grandfather and great grandfather.  He got everyone’s blessings and started off to Delhi.  Everyone began to shed tears as Baba Ram Rai ji was leaving.  They wondered when he was going to return.  They all became emotional.  Baba Ram Rai ji set off from Kiratpur.

Baba Ram Rai ji faced Delhi.  His whole body was handsome.  He first camped at Ropar.  The whole travelling party ate and slept the night where Gurduara Sadavart (Sadabarat) is.  In the morning, they started off again with the horses and servants.  They rested the night.  They travelled slowly during the day.  They crossed many villages and regions.  They preached Sikhi on the way.  There was laughter and enjoyment on the way.  Hunting and games happened.  Keertan and Katha were regular.  They travelled during the day.  The Sikhs came to do his Darshan on the way.  The ambassador of Aurangzeb was with Baba Ram Rai ji.  They all entered Delhi.  The ambassador left Baba Ram Rai ji to inform the Badshah of Baba ji’s arrival.  He said to Aurangzeb: “the Satguru that sits on the throne, he did not agree to come to Delhi.  He sent his son.  He told me: “whatever powers the Shah wishes to see, the Shah can ask my son.  I sent my powers with my son.  Whatever the Shah wants to see, my son will show him.  It won’t go fruitless.  There is nothing else with the Shah for me.  If meeting me was important, I would have come.  Whatever the Badshah needs, ask my son.”  The son has come with me, Sire.  Many people have come with him.”  Nauranga heard this and thought to himself: “what I wanted to see, that has been fulfilled.  The Guru’s son will show me his miracles.  The son is the same as the father.  If the son can’t complete my wish, I will call his father.  Nobody can disobey me.  He sent his son with his powers.  I will call him if needed.”  He sent his men and had Baba Ram Rai ji stay at Majnu da Tilla.  Aurangzeb said to his men: “give him what he asks for.”

9-38 Sri Ram Rai Resurrects a Dead Goat

The son of Sri Guru Har Rai ji entered Delhi.  He pleasantly set up camp at the place of Majnu Da Tilla.  Majnu Da Tilla was a place where Guru Nanak Dev ji and Guru Hargobind Sahib ji had stayed.  It was on the shore of the Yamuna.  The Turk Emperor found out and called his advisors.  He said to them: “he is here to show his miracles.  The Guru didn’t come himself.  He sent his son.  Let’s test his power before meeting him.  It should be an impossible task.  Give me some ideas so we can prove him false.  What should we say and do?  It should be an impossible task.  I will meet him after.  If it is worth it, then I will call him here.”  The Qazis and Mullahs heard this and were happy.  They praised the Badshah for an amazing idea and said: “you are the wisest of all, Sire.  You can do as you wish.  The ones that have the 8 Siddhis, they can make themselves really small or really big.  There are other Siddhis as well.  They can do the impossible.  These people can do anything.  They can show many miracles in various ways.  They can do which can’t be thought of.  They are beyond thought and strength.  The most difficult thing to do is to resurrect the dead.  Let’s do a scheme.  Do what we say.  A dead body should be resurrected.  The Sidhs can do this.  If a body is buried, it can’t be resurrected.  If it has been eaten or burnt, that is impossible to make alive again.  This should be done.  He should be cheated.  Give him a goat for food.  Send other things to eat as well.  Make him happy with respect.  They will eat the goat for dinner.  The body of the goat will be gone.  In the morning, we will ask for the goat, saying it belonged to the prince and he wants it back.  We will fool him in this way.  If he can’t resurrect the goat, we will tell him to come into the Shariya.  If he has powers, he will be saved.  Otherwise, he will be stuck.”  They all advised Aurangzeb in this way.  The Shah accepted the idea.  He liked the plan.  He thought to himself: “the eaten goat can’t be raised again.  He will come into our religion then.”

The food was sent for Baba Ram Rai ji and his camp.  The best food was sent.  The Shah sent his best goat for Baba ji.  It was the best lean goat that had a lot of meat on it.  It was sent for the Langars.  Everything else to cook the food was sent as well where Majnu Da Tilla was.  The food was sent with the servants.  They all bowed to Baba ji and said: “these are sent from the Shah’s kitchen.  We are here to honour you.  Accept this goat and food.”  The servants left afterwards.

Baba Ram Rai ji used his powers to see what was going on.  He knew what the scheme was.  He said to his Sikhs: “this goat is for food.  Do its jhatka and cook it.  Don’t throw the skin and bones away.  When you jhatka it, take one leg and send it the home of the most senior Qazi from the Shah’s court.”  The servants did what Baba ji said.  The goat was slaughtered and cleaned.  A few Sikhs took one of the legs and went to the senior Qazi’s home.

The Sikhs knocked at the door and said: “we are from Baba Ram Rai ji’s camp.  This is a gift for you.  It is yours anyways.  We wanted you to have it.  Baba ji wants to make sure you are well.”  Baba Ram Rai ji knew that this was the Qazi that came up with the scheme.  The Sikhs left and said: “we will meet you in the morning.”  The Qazi was egotistical and couldn’t see what was going on.  He was happy to receive the goat.  He thought to himself: “he is afraid of him.  He is trying to make us happy.  He sent a goat’s leg for me.  He wants me to help him in the Shah’s court.  He knows the Shah listens to me.  That’s why he sent me this gift.”  The Qazi had the goat cooked and ate it.

Baba Ram Rai ji told the Sikhs to gather the bones after eating the meat.  The Sikhs ate the meat and kept the bones.  After eating, everyone slept on their beds.  Everyone woke up in the morning.  They all bathed and recited Gurbani.  Baba Ram Rai ji woke up at Amritvela and bathed.  Asa Vaar was sung.  Karah Prashaad was distributed.

Nauranga’s court was in session as the sun came up.  The Qazis and Mullahs all arrived.  They all said: “is the goat alive or did they eat it?  Send someone to find out what happened.  Get the real story.”  The messenger went and got news.  He said: “they ate the goat.”  The Shah said: “awesome!  Go and tell them we want the goat back.  We will send another goat.  This was the prince’s goat.  It was a mistake that it was sent.  We need it back.  It was sent by mistake.  The child is crying for his goat.  He wants to play with it.  He is crying and pouting.”  He said this to the servants and sent them off.  The same people went that took the goat.  The Shah said: “scare them if they don’t give the goat back.”

The servants came to Baba Ram Rai ji.  They said to Baba ji what the Shah had told them to say: “that goat is the Shahzada’s.  We will give you other goats in its place.  We sent you the wrong one at night.  We didn’t know it was going to cause problems.  The prince knows the goat is gone.  The Shahzada has caused chaos in the home.  The Shah is upset as well.  We tried to convince the Prince but he isn’t listening.  The Shah got angry at us.  He will fire us.  We need the goat.  We are afraid of the Shah.  It will be a little trouble for you but we will lose our jobs.  If you give the goat back, everything will be well.”  Baba Ram Rai ji said: “the goat has been killed and eaten.  I can give you another goat.  Where will we bring it from?  Tell the Shahzada to play with another toy.  Divert his attention.  I will give you a better goat.  He will be alright with it.  How can a dead goat come back?”

The servants went back to the Shah and said: “the goat has been eaten.  How can we send it back?  There’s no solution to this.”  The Shah sent more men and said: “tell him to give it back, now!  The Shahzada only wants that goat.  He doesn’t understand.”  The servants went back to Baba Ram Rai ji’s camp and said: “we need the goat back.  We need the same one.  The Badshah wants the same one, in any way.”  Baba Ram Rai ji understood what was going on.  He thought to himself: “the reason why I am here, I need to do that.  He wants to see my powers before meeting me.”  Baba Ram Rai ji signaled the cooks to bring the bones and skin of the goat.  The bones and skin were brought.  Baba Ram Rai ji took water and splashed the goat with it.  He said: “Vahiguru!”  The goat got up right away.  It was good as new.  It was making “Bah” noises and walking around as it was before.  It was alive but it only had 3 legs.  The fourth leg was missing.  Everyone was amazed to see the goat resurrected.  Baba Ram Rai ji said: “we gave one leg to the Qazi.  He ate the leg.  Tell him to attach the leg with his powers.  Take the goat to the Shah.  Tell the Shah about the fourth leg.  We are sending the goat.  If you want to join the fourth leg, he will need to join it.  Whatever we ate, we are sending back.  This was our responsibility.  The Qazi is responsible for one leg.”  The servants were amazed and brought the 3-legged goat back.

The Emperor and the people of the court saw the goat.  They were amazed.  Aurangzeb said: “where’s the fourth leg?”  The servants said: “the fourth leg was eaten by the Qazi.  Sri Ram Rai ji said: “ask the Qazi to join the fourth leg with his powers.”  Aurangzeb looked towards the Qazi.  He smiled and said: “look, the Guru of the Hindus is true.  You tried to cheat him but he cheated you.  He suppressed you.  You got caught.  Now, join the fourth leg.  The whole court is watching you.  If you can’t do this, this will be bad for your reputation.  This news will spread that you tried to cheat him.  We have been made fools of.  You cheated him and then you took one leg from.  Why did you take the leg?  The Guru’s son resurrected the goat.  People will say: “the Turks couldn’t join the leg.”  In this way, the Emperor spoke to the court.  The foolish Qazi looked bad.  The Qazi lowered his head in shame and didn’t say anything.  The whole court was amazed.  They all saw the great powers of the Guru.  Who can doubt the powers of the Satguru?

9-39 The Poisonous Chola/ Flowers out of Food

The Qazi was embarrassed in the court.  He lowered his neck and eyes.  Nauranga was impressed with the miracle.  He was happy.  He wanted to meet Baba Ram Rai ji.  In a surprised way, Aurangzeb said: “he has a lot of powers!  Do another effort to test him.  If he shows the miracle, he lives.  Otherwise, he dies.”  A chola was made of fine fabrics.  Poison was laced on the inside of it that was fatal by the touch of skin.  It would kill a person if someone would touch it.  It was like being bit by a venomous snake.  The poison was applied to all the clothes.  One person took it and went to Baba Ram Rai ji.  He was given the instruction to see Baba ji wear the Chola: “till he doesn’t put on the chola, stay there.”

The servant took the poisonous Chola to Baba Ram Rai ji’s Dhera.  He presented the chola to Baba ji and said: “the Badshah is really happy.  He has sent this gift with devotion.  This is a chola for you to wear.  This is his faith.  He has requested for you to wear it with great love.  He wanted me to see you wear it.”  The son of the Satguru sensed deceit.  He wanted to show his power.  Baba Ram Rai ji put the poisonous chola on.  He sat down with patience as he was sitting before.  What was the poison going to do to him?  His sight would be able to neutralize the most poisonous venom.  A normal person would have died.  He sat for a long time with the chola on.  The servant was amazed to see this.  He didn’t say anything though.  After about 3 hours, the servant got up and left.  He had faith now.

The servant came back to Alamgir (Aurangzeb) and said: “I made him wear the chola.  I saw it with my own eyes.  He was happy and wore it.  He was in the same state.  He was unaffected by the poison.  I spent 3 hours with him.  He interacted in the same personality as he has.  He was enjoying himself.  The chola was so poisonous that it would have killed someone in about an hour.”  Aurangzeb heard this and was shocked.  He then called the wise Turks.  He called the best Ulamas.  They were scholars.  They were strict on the Shariya.  He said to them: “the Guru of the Hindus has magical powers.  What can I say to him now?  He is above everything.  Say something if there isn’t such a magic.”  The scholars said: “Badshah, we will tell you.  Their Guru was Guru Nanak Chand ji.  He was the first.  He travelled to many lands.  He did some magic in Mecca.  He surprised all of the Mujaavars.  Sire, if you wish to make the Deen grow, if you wish to bring the Hindus into the Shariya; then listen to us: bring Baba Ram Rai into the Shariya.  Their Sikhs are the Hindus.  They will all follow him if he converts.  In the home of Guru Nanak Dev ji, these miracles are quite common.  He shows his powers everywhere he goes.  Many Hindus are fooled by them.  They used their powers to attract many people’s minds.  They are praised in many lands.  Their Sikhs are Hindus who are weak.  They see the magic and follow them.  They can’t save themselves from them.  If you want to bring Baba Ram Rai into the Deen, give him our food, made in our way.  Send the food to him.  Make him eat it in any way possible.  Bring him into our Deen.  His magic and powers will be gone as soon as he eats our food.”  The Shah heard this and did as they said.

Food was prepared in the Islamic tradition.  A Daroga was called to take the food.  The Shah said to him: “praise him and give him this food.  This is known in the house of Guru Nanak Dev ji: Hindu and Turk are One to them; they see the world of the One Khuddah.  Tell him that I sent this food for him as I am devoted to him.  Tell him I praised him and that he is the pure Fakir of Khuddah.”  He said many things to the Daroga.  The Daroga made a deceitful plan and took the food with Halal meat.

The Daroga came to Baba Ram Rai ji and said to him the words that the Shah said to him: “the Badshah bows to your feet and sends this food with faith.  You see Hindu and the Turk as the same.  You see the One pure Allah.  You see the One Khuddah in all.  You don’t see any difference.  The Badshah had this food made for you specially.  He wanted to respect you, seeing you as great.  Please accept this food.”  The son of the Guru sensed deceit again.  He saw the stubbornness of the fools.  Baba Ram Rai ji said: “bring the plate close to me.  Let me see what faith he has for me and what he sent.”   The plate was placed in front of Baba ji.  He said: “remove the cloth.”  The Daroga obeyed and removed the cloth with his hands.  In the plate was rai bhel and jasmine flowers.  They smelled great.  They were white in colour.  They were very pretty flowers.  The Daroga was amazed to see the flowers.  He was amazed and didn’t say anything.  He saw the beautiful white flowers that were fresh and blooming.  Baba Ram Rai ji said: “the Badshah sent flowers for me?  They are fragrant.  They are blooming.  Take these back to the Badshah from me.  Present these flowers to him.”  The Daroga was amazed and went back.  He covered the plate and came back.

The Daroga came back to the Shah and the scholars.  The Umraavs were sitting there.  Where Aurnagzeb was sitting, the plate was placed and the cover was removed.  The Shah said: “what did you bring?  Did he eat the food.”  The Daroga said: “I can’t understand his power.  I said to him what you told me to say.  I placed the plate in front of him.  He told me to uncover the plate.  He didn’t even touch the plate.  When I took the cloth off, there were only flowers there.  They were pretty white flowers.  He told me to take these flowers back to you.  He said they’re from him.  He showed this miracle.  I couldn’t understand how did this happen.  The meat turned into flowers.  It happened in front of my eyes.  His magic or powers are strong.”  Aurangzeb and the court heard this.  They were all amazed.  They couldn’t understand what was going on.  The corrupt Umraavs said: “this is a strong magic.  Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji has these powers.  He has showed his powers.  If he would eat our food, his powers would have been gone.  He didn’t eat.  Look how he cheated us and kept his Dharma.”  Nauranga said: “what should we do now?  We can’t trick him.  He is amazing with his magic or powers.  He can do what he wants to.  What should we do now.  He can’t be stopped.  What should we do?”  The fools were stubborn in their Shariya.  They weren’t becoming humble in front of Baba Ram Rai ji.  They spoke nonsense.

9-40 Sitting on the Well/ The Flowers of Mecca

Nauranga, sitting in his court, spoke in a surprised way: “amazing!  He does amazing things which can’t be understood.  As we try to trick him, he already knows, with his powers.  He shows his powers with ease.  We should call him here now.  Let’s have him seated in the court with respect.  Let’s speak to him with love and listen to him.  Let’s call him and test him more.  Let’s see how powerful he is.  We will test him further when we meet him.  I want to be amazed when I see him.  What should we do now so that we can see more miracles?  I want to see the most impossible and anxiety-causing task.”  One of the Mullahs heard this and said: “there is one easy task in which we can either see his power or he will fall to his death.  Let’s go to an aesthetically pretty well in the palace and set up court there.  Everyone can sit around the well.  Rugs should be laid out in the same way.  One sheet or rug should be placed over the well so it can’t be known if it’s a well or the ground.  A beautiful sheet should be over the well.  The well should be covered from all sides.  When Baba Ram Rai ji comes, we will have him sit on top of the well.  If he doesn’t show his power, he will fall into the well and die.  If he has powers, he will remain sitting.  This shouldn’t be such a difficult or shocking thing for him.”  The foolish, void of Dharam, Maulanas gave this advice to Aurangzeb.  This was another way to cheat Baba Ram Rai ji.  The Shah heard this and said: “this is a good idea.  Both tasks will be fulfilled.”  The foolish Nauranga was corrupt.  He was a tyrant.  To test the powers of Baba Ram Rai ji, a court was set near a well inside the palace.

Rugs were laid out around the well.  The well was covered with the same style of rugs.  It was covered in a deceitful way.  A stool was set on top of the well.  It was difficult to set the stool there.  As soon as one would set foot on the stool, one would fall into the well.  The Sheiks and Maulanas, along with the Qazis and advisors; they would give schemes to Aurangzeb and make him happy.  They would laugh with the Shah and praise him.  They would dress-up and sit in the court.  They all wanted to see the prank.  The Soobas and Umraavs stood in the court.  The Ulamas, who were strict in the Shariya, came to the court.  A messenger was sent to call Baba Ram Rai ji.

The messenger came to Majnu Da Tilla and met Baba Ram Rai ji.  He folded his hands and said: “the Shah is thinking of you.  Come and give him your Darshan.  Go and see him along with the court.”  When Baba Ram Rai ji heard this, he got ready, right away.  He went with his unlimited powers.  The Sikhs, Bhai Gurdas ji, Bhai Tara ji and others, they all went with Baba Ram Rai ji to see the Master of Delhi.  They were all respected as they all entered the court of Aurangzeb.  Men and women came to see Baba Ram Rai ji.  The glory of Baba Ram Rai ji spread in Delhi.  They all saw him and bowed their heads.  They all praised him.  In this way, Baba Ram Rai ji came to the court.  His body was handsome.  His face was handsome.  A person came forward to meet Baba Ram Rai ji.  He guided Baba Ram Rai ji towards the stool on top of the well.  The ones who were soft-hearted, they were scared for Baba Ram Rai ji.  They were afraid of Baba ji falling into the well.

Sri Baba Ram Rai ji sensed the deceit.  In the midst of the court of the Turks, the Hindus were in pain.  Baba Ram Rai ji could hear their minds.  He thought to himself: “this court of the Turks is painful for the Hindus.  They still wish to test my powers.  They don’t know what happens in the afterlife.”  Baba Ram Rai ji said: “Vahiguru,” and picked up his foot to put on top of the stool.  He put both his feet on the stool.  Both his feet were still.  He sat on top of the stool as if it was on solid ground.  Nauranga saw this and was amazed.  Some bit their fingers in shock.  This was the Siddhi “Laghima” (to be light as a feather).  Without any support under the stool, many bowed their heard.  Aurangzeb bowed his head as well.  He said: “welcome, of Ramdas!  It is great that you came and met me.”  They both asked how each other was.  Seeing the Guru’s son’s new love, Nauranga was really happy.  He had seen the miracle with his own eyes.  He wanted to keep Baba Ram Rai ji close to him.  He saw him as really powerful.  He didn’t know anyone as powerful as he was.  He thought to himself: “he will be useful to me.  He can do my impossible tasks.  I will get him to do what I want.  I will keep him happy.  There is no man so powerful as him in the world.  He is so powerful that he can make anything he wants to.  He killed a goat and raised it the next day.  Now, he is sitting on top of the well, without any support.  He’s sitting like he is sitting on the ground.”  Baba Ram Rai ji sat there for about 2 hours.  Baba ji answered all the questions.  The jealous were burning with hatred.  The unwise fools were not happy.  They were uncivilized.  Baba Ram Rai ji won the court with his powers.  He amazed the Emperor of Delhi.  He then casually got up from the court and came back to his Dhera at Majnu Da Tilla.

From that day on, Baba Ram Rai ji’s glory grew.  He came to Aurangzeb everyday.  Aurangzeb sent money to Baba Ram Rai ji’s Dhera everyday.  The glory of Baba ji spread in the city.  Wherever people met, they spoke of Baba ji: “the Guru’s son came at the invitation of the Shah.  He resurrected to the goat and then to test him, he was seated on a sheet on top of a well with ease.  Nothing happened to him.”  Many came to do the Darshan of Baba Ram Rai ji with gifts.  They would bow and present many gifts.  The glory spread in the city.  Many heard of his arrival and came to see him.  They got the Darshan of the Satguru’s son.  They brought clothes, money, jewellery and other gifts.  They did Ardaas and asked him to be their support.  High and low, they all came to see Baba Ram Rai ji.  A great crowd would gather.  People would bow and see Baba ji.  He was close to the city, so many would come.

Whenever Nauranga would call Baba ji, he would come to the palace, sitting on a palanquin.  His palanquin would come into the court.  He would speak to Aurangzeb with joy.  He would leave after sitting for a long time.

One day, Baba ji went to the court of Aurangzeb.  Many discussions happened.  At that point, a Haazi came into the city who had done the pilgrimage to Mecca.  This news was given to the Qazi in the court.  The Haazi was called to Aurangzeb.  The Haazi had brought fruits from Mecca.  He gave Aurangzeb the fruits.  Aurangzeb asked about Mecca and praised the fruits from Mecca.  He then said to Baba Ram Rai ji: “there are no fruits like this.  Can you reach Mecca or not?  Can you eat such fruit without going?  The miracles of the Prophet are there.  The Hindus can’t go there.  These fruits are sweet and tasty.  I can’t find these fruits anywhere else in the world.  I have looked.  If you have reach, you won’t be stopped because you have powers.  Get me these fruits from Mecca.  Do it now.  I will trust you.  I want to see if the Prophet will let you do this.  If he allows you, then you will be able to get these fruits.”  Baba Ram Rai ji, the son of the Satguru, heard this and said: “Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji illuminated in this world.  He had two servants.  He took them to Mecca along with him.  The miracle he showed in Mecca, that is known in the whole world.  There are more difficult places where Guru Nanak Dev ji went to.  Guru ji went there with his strength.  I am his servant.  I can get you the fruits without delay if you wish me to.”  After saying this to Aurangzeb, Baba Ram Rai ji took his hand out from under his shawl.  The fruits of Mecca were in Baba Ram Rai ji’s hand.  He said: “here!  Take these delicious fruits and eat them!”  The Badshah was amazed.  He took the fruits and was shocked.  He compared those fruits with the ones that the Haazi brought.  They were the same but the ones that Baba Ram Rai ji brought were fresher.  The ones that the Haazi brought were cut from the vines many days ago and travelled a long distance.  They were wilting and dried up.  The fruits were the same though.  The size, shape and taste were the same.  Baba ji’s fruit were riper.  Aurangzeb was amazed.  He thought to himself: “he didn’t take any time.  He showed me the fruits in a second.”  Everyone was shocked to see this.  They had faith seeing the amazing miracle.  The haters were embarrassed.  They were upset.  In this way, the miracles were seen.  Baba Ram Rai ji came back to his Dhera.  Everyone was amazed at the miracles.  They had faith on Baba Ram Rai ji, seeing his virtues.
