9-31 The Destruction of the Kanshi Mandirs
The fools that were strict in Shariya, they were egotistical and ignorant. They would influence Nauranga with the Pride of their Deen. They would say: “look how no one exposed them before. They looted everyone. Khuddah gave you wisdom. Nothing can be hidden from you. You have made idol worshipping illegal. Wherever your orders go, the Hindus will be scared. They will come into the Shariya and become happy. They will go to heaven. Your praise has increased. Your radiance is growing. The ones who convert to Islam, they will be happy. Without converting, they would have wasted their lives. The Hindus have another major place called Kanshi. There are hundreds of Thakur Duaras there. This is where they teach their Dharma. They worship many idols there. You should go there and see their fraud. Destroy it and punish the people. Destroy the Dharma of Hindus. Radiate the Shariya there. Let’s demolish their training centres. They have their scholars there. If they convert, then Hindus everywhere will convert.” The Badshah heard this and was impressed. He made an effort to go. He mobilized the elephants, horses and foot soldiers. The army set off towards Kanshi Banaras.
The army travelled slowly. There were many in the army. They eventually reached Kanshi and set up camp. The Hindus got news of Aurangzeb’s arrival and became frightened. They became anxious. They all hid in their homes. They prayed: “Prabhoo, we don’t wish to see him, even in our dreams.” The Turks were happy to see their religion grow. They got together and figured that their Deen will grow now. Nauranga was strict in the Shariya. The Turks were happy with Aurangzeb and thought he was a good Badshah for their religion. Aurangzeb rested for one night. He entered the city with his army the next day, on top of his elephant. He saw Shivalas all over the place. There were conches and bells being played. Aarti was being done. Flowers were offered and Pooja was being done. Bishanpadhs were sung with Ransinghas. There were celebrations in all of the Mandirs. The 9 types of Bhagti were happening, including Keertan. The Katha of Puranas were happening in various places. People listened with faith and devotion. The Vedas were being studied and the translations were being pondered. They would use their hands to gesture the while discussing the Vedas. Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras did their specific tasks and followed the Dharma.
Where Vishvanaath was, it was the Shiromani Mandir. The most Pooja happened there. Thousands of people came in the morning and bowed. They did Pooja with Bail Patras, Akk leaves, Dhatoora leaves, flowers and fruits. Cannabis was used as an offering. The waters of the Ganga were brought in pots to bathes the Shivling. The people would offer incense and do the Shivlang’s Parkarma. They would put their hands on their mouths and make “goat calls” as a form of worship. This Mandir was the holiest in Kanshi. The Jyotirlinga is there. Aurangzeb went there first. He saw thousands of Hindus with faith there. The Shivling at that point jumped and went into the well. Because Aurangzeb’s sinful feet came there, the Shivling didn’t tolerate his radiance. Because of his Tapasya’s radiance, the Devatas left. Just as Brahma, Vishnu and the others avoided Raavan, they all avoided Aurangzeb. When Raavan’s end time came, Ram Chander ji came to destroy him. When Aurangzeb, the Malaich, came to Vishwanath, the Teerath left to avoid his impure hands. The Turks came inside with their shoes. The other Moorthis were broken. The limbs were broken and scattered onto the streets.
Where the place of Bhairav was, it was thousands of years old, there was as pillar of Bhairav there; the sinners said to Aurangzeb: “look at this big tall stone. It is called the Lath of Bhairav. The Hindus worship it and offer it a lot of money. You should go and see the fraud. You should break this. There is too much blind faith here. It is only a stone.” Aurangzeb heard this and went there. It was deep into the ground and high in the sky. It was glorious. Aurangzeb got angry seeing it. He commanded to destroy it: “break it to pieces and throw it. Pull it from the ground. Make sure that no one can rebuild it.” Nauranga then thought: “it will have to be blown with canons. When it breaks, the bottom part will stay.” He ordered the canons. The canons came. Aurangzeb climbed to a high place to watch.
Gunpowder was added and the cannonballs were loaded. A really heavy cannonball was loaded. The canon was aimed at the Lath of Bhairav. The canon was lit with a torch. When the canon fired, it was like lightening. The earth trembled. The houses shook. The streets were already very narrow. After one cannonball hit the Lath, another was loaded. There was a great crowd there. A huge black hornet came out of the Lath to where Aurangzeb was standing with his army. The hornet came towards Aurangzeb, buzzing as it flew. It flew like a bullet; like an arrow from a bow. It came in front of Aurangzeb’s face and stung him in his forehead. A piece of flesh was bitten which hurt Aurangzeb a lot. He tried to hit it with his hand but he couldn’t. The hornet was venomous. Aurangzeb’s forehead swelled up. He was in pain.
The second cannonball was fired towards the Lath and made a loud noise. The Badshah of Delhi got scared from the noise. Many other hornets came out of the Lath. They flew around to many places. They bit many people. The faces of the soldiers swelled. Nobody could do anything. Nobody could runaway. They ran around with fear. The hornets and other insects bit the soldiers. They flew and stung the Turks on the face and other skin. The skin would swell up right away. The bodyguards of Aurangzeb were trying to keep the hornets away, waiving cloths at them. Hundreds would try to waive them away. They ran and yelled. Many of the soldier’s Pugris fell off. Some ripped their clothes off. They didn’t know where their weapons were. There was a loud noise. A whole swarm of hornets came. They all saw the radiance of the Lath. The Badshah got a little scared. He and his officers were shocked. He wondered where this fear came from all of a sudden. He said: “accept a great gift from me. I have seen the miracle. I won’t do this sin again. I will distribute the Sheerni. Forgive me.” He folded his hands and said: “I won’t show my force again.” Everyone bowed their heads when they saw that Aurangzeb was humbled.
9-32 The Decline of the Hindus
The whole army folded their hands and bowed their heads. The hornets and bees flew to the sky then. The Turks distributed Sheernis. They saw the glory and began to praise the Teerath. Hornets and bees stung the army. The army was shouting in pain. The insects kept flying around where the army was. When the Turk distributed the Sheernis, they got better. The hornets flew away. It was not known where the hornets went to. Where they came from? No one knew. The Lath was solid. It was like some one released the hornets from a bag. They attacked the Turks all at once, like arrows shooting at them. Many discussed the situation as they saw the power of the Lath.
Aurangzeb left Banaras and went to Delhi, his capital. Two cannonballs hit the Lath. The marks of the cannonballs can be seen today. There are two big pot holes in the ground, where they fell. In 1860 (Vikram), some problem arose near the Lath. Hindus and Turks had an increased conflict. In Kanshi, the two groups fought. The problem escalated (known as the Lath Bairon riots of 1809 CE). The Hindus gathered in large numbers and burned the Imam Baara (the home of the Imam). There was fire all around it. Many Turks were killed by the Hindus that came to stop them. The Turks then gathered and picked up their weapons. The Imam’s house was burnt. Many thousands of Turks came to fight. They killed and got killed with anger. A lot of blood spilled. They surrounded the Lath of Bhairav and gathered firewood. They burned the Lath with a lot of firewood. The Lath was burnt to ashes. After the fire, the rock became ashes. I was quite young then.
Aurangzeb then came to Delhi. He was a hater of the Hindu religion. He thought about how he could finish the religion. He wanted the whole world to convert to Islam. He did many efforts towards this. He sent many commands to all the lands under him. He implemented Pro-Turk strategies. The Hindu prostitutes were arrested. The brothels were stopped and ordered to close down. The Turk Pathani prostitutes were to take over the brothels. This foolish idea was given to Aurangzeb by one of his advisors. He wanted the Turk prostitutes to convince the Hindus to convert to Islam. The Hindus went the Muslim prostitutes and impurified their religion. (There are 6 unique properties of a religion: Asha- Goal, Isht- Lord, Upasana- Devotion, Khaan- food, Paan- drink and Pehraan- clothes. These were slowly changing for the Hindus) When there weren’t any Hindu prostitutes, the Hindus went to the Muslim prostitutes. Aurangzeb planned this out to make Islam grow in this foul way. After indulging in these lustful acts, how would the Dharam remain? The Dhobis (Launderers), merchants and other trades were all replaced by Muslims. The Hindus were heavily taxed in doing any trades. The grocers were replaced with Muslims; along with tailors, merchants and tradesmen. There were many Turks everywhere. Slowly, the Hindus had to deal with them. The tradesmen would constantly convince the Hindus to convert. Aurangzeb sent orders to implement this strategy of replacing all of the trades with Muslim merchants and tradesmen. Even the language and clothes were implemented. The law was set for all the Soobas. Sirhind and Lahore was ordered to do this. Kashmir and Multan were next. The Jhatka shops were closed and only Halal meat was to be sold. The tailors, launderers and construction workers were all Turks. The Hindus saw this strict law and got scared. The command then went to the West. The 22 Soobas received this command. However far the Turk kingdom was, the new law was implemented.
The Hindu prostitutes were stopped. The Shah gave the Turk prostitutes the ownership of the brothels. The skilled trades: leather, cobblers, launderers and fishers; they were taken over by the Shah. The Hindus were taxed. The Turks forced the Hindus to fight with each other. The youngest brother of a Hindu family would fight and if he didn’t get his way, he would convert to Islam by reading the Kalima in the presence of the Qazi. That person would be helped by the government once he followed the Shariya. He would win all his cases. The Hindus lost their cases. For the greed of money, many converted to Islam. Some would become Muslims for marriage purposes. The whole land was following this tradition. If one stayed a Hindu, they were looked down upon. The lower castes of the Hindus converted to Islam as they were mistreated by the higher castes. They read the Kalima. The Brahmins could not read the Shaasters for money. They couldn’t make a living anymore. Nobody read or listened to the Vedas or the Shaasters. The Hindus began to read and write in Farsi. They would receive more money for this. Many rich Hindus began to study Farsi. They would speak Farsi and greet “As-salamu alaikum,” with others. They sat in the Mosques to study education. They read the Quran. They didn’t say Ram Ram or bow to their elders anymore. Everyone changed all of their traditions. The Hindus said Slam to each other. They slandered the education of the Shaasters. They said: “oh son, to read the Shaasters is the lower thing to do. What will you get from that?” The Hindus would take their kids to Turks to study. They would say: “study this. You will make more money like this.” The Hindus said As-salamu alaikum to the Maulvi teachers. The older traditions were all broken. They ate the Halal meat instead of jhatka. They earned more money, dealing with Turks. The Brahmins didn’t like their Dharma anymore. The Kshatriyas studied Farsi and thought of it as good. They didn’t think twice in converting to Islam. They earned money and became proud. The ones that didn’t study Farsi were made fun of. They saw the Brahmin scholars as uneducated. One studied Farsi and the others followed. The Turks were praised. This would be rewarded. Dharama and Adharma were not considered. People became greedy for money. The Dharma was spoiled. There was doubt everywhere. The Turks were shameless for this treatment and strategy of spoiling another’s Dharma. What was to say about the Vaishyas and the Shudras? They would go to the Turks for their requests. The Brahmins, Kshatriyas and Vaishyas dressed like the Turks. They wore the Tumba (paints) of the Turks, instead of the Dhoti. They wore caps like the Turks. The tradition was changed. They met and sat in the company of the Turks. The Turks smoked tobacco. The Brahmins would speak to the Turks, sniffing their tobacco. The Turks would smoke tobacco in their presence on purpose. The smoke would go into the eyes and ears of the Hindus. They would remain seated, without shame, near the tobacco smoke. They were in joy near them. They didn’t think twice about avoiding Tobacco smoke (the Skanda Purana prohibits the use of Tobacco in the Vedic tradition). The Hindus wore the used clothing of the Turks. They were happy with them. They would call them “Meeya ji” and praise them. They were proud of this. They didn’t think about their own Dharma. They were greedy for money and would look forward to meeting the Turks.
Just as Raavan stopped the other Dharmas by terrorizing the Tapasvis and gave them pain; that’s how Nauranga Chavghutta ruined the Hindu Dharam. He did many other strategies to finish the religion. The Hindu Dharma was spoiled in the world. The Shariya of the Turks was grown in this way. The kingdom of many lands was under the Turks. Nauranga was determined to convert the other lands. He had Tapasya from his previous births. He gave pain to many in the world. Kavi Santokh Singh ji writes about the terrible strategies of Aurangzeb. Many Hindus lost their Dharma in this way.
9-33 The Mullahs and Qazis influence Nauranga
The conflict grew with the Hindus. Nauranga treated them very badly. The Turks united to make Hindustan into Islam. The domestic disputes of land and property within families; if one party became Muslim, they would win the case. They would automatically win. If a Hindu was hungry and desperate; poor or with other problems; they were tempted to become Muslim. The Turks would spoil the person’s Dharma. They would bring him into the Deen. They would then help him with a shop, land or money. The whole land was stuck in this type of strategy. There was no other protector seen. Wherever Hindu ideology was strong, where Katha and Veda/ Shastra philosophy was strong, Aurangzeb tried harder to convert them. If someone showed some powers or miracles, they would leave them and regret it. If someone was stubborn and didn’t show their powers or convert, they were killed. This was common. If someone spoke up about this, that person was killed or punished as well. The foolish Emperor was a terrible tyrant.
The Qazis and Mullahs were fools as well. As the Hindus were terrorized, Nauranga was influenced by them. They were already against the Guru’s home. Shiekh Ahmed Sirhindi pushed for the execution of Guru Arjan Dev ji. The same time of people were with Aurangzeb. They would influence Nauranga. When Shah Jahan was in conflict with Guru Hargobind Sahib ji, these Qazi Mullahs had been jealous of Guru ji. The Qazis kept filling Nauranga’s ears. They made Nauranga hate the Guru’s home. They said: “the Hindus have a Guru whom the whole land follows. It is said that he has powers. Whatever one wants, he shows it to them. Jahangir, your grandfather, he called the Guru to him and kept him in the Gwalior fort. He sat there for many days. He did a Chalisa there and did what the Badshah said to do. He stayed with him after that. They became friends and spent time together till Jahangir was alive. Shah Jahan, your father was after him. For some time, it was good but he got into a conflict with the Guru. Your father got angry. He sent an army to attack the Guru when the Guru kept an army and became a king. The Guru made his own Takhat. He was in Amritsar. Your father sent an army there. Mughlas Khan went with an army of 7,000. The battle was fierce. The Guru killed the whole army. He killed the men and horses. He destroyed our canons. The Guru remained alive. Shah Jahan was angry. When the Shah was going to send another army, the Guru left Amritsar and made another city. He went to Jungle Desh afterwards. He then took the Shah’s horses. The Dariya horses were taken by the Guru’s Sikh, Bidhi Chand. Lulla and Kumber Beg, the Soobas went to catch the Guru. They attacked and fought the Guru in Jungle Desh. It was a fierce battle as well. More than 30,000 men were sent. The Guru killed the Begs and the whole army. He then fought in Kartarpur with us. 80,000 men were sent there. He killed the whole army again. Now, his grandson is on his Ghaddi. The grandson has a lot of powers. Dara Shikoh met him and told him his story. The Guru gave him advice. He motivated him to fight you. He said that he would help him: “we will be with you if you fight him. My Sikhs and my army will be with you. We will gather a great army. We will call the other Rajas to join. We will make you the Emperor. You will be the supreme king. We will be with you.” He said all these things to him. The Guru wanted to fight you. He made Dara Shikoh his beloved companion. He hated you and wanted to spoil it with you but Khuddah is on your side. You became the Emperor of the world. The Guru lives in your land. He does not wish well for you. He is said to be wealthy with powers. The Hindus bring him many gifts. The Guru gives them all wisdom. He has made the whole land into his servants. Summon him to your court. Tell him to show you, his powers. He will surely show you. See the surprising powers and enjoy them. Otherwise, tell him to come into the Shariya. Offer him what he wishes to have. He is the big support of the Hindus. Without the Guru, the Hindus will convert easily. Lakhs follow him. They will do what the Guru says. If the Guru tells the people about the Deen, they will surely convert. He calls himself the Guru and makes the people do Pooja of his feet. When he follows the Shariya, many will become Turks by themselves. It’s a wining situation both ways. He will show you his powers. He will do what is impossible. See the surprising powers and enjoy it. Otherwise, with little effort, he will convert. Everyone will convert. There is nothing better than this. Call the Guru. What can’t come in our hands, we will tell the Guru to give it to us with his powers. When we need some news, the Guru will show it to us.” In this way the Qazis, scholars, Ulamas and Mullahs influenced Aurangzeb. They gave him many lectures to convince him. They showed him the benefits of this task. They said: “this will be to your advantage. The Guru has powers. You will have them then. We will see if he does have powers or not. We will see if he knows the path to Khuddah or not. You are very wise. You understand everyone easily. You are a great king. We keep telling you about the Deen by which the Deen will grow better. First of all, you will resolve the previous conflict. Test his powers in many ways. If he doesn’t have powers, then bother him. Take his Dharma from him with force.”
The Shah heard this. He liked hearing this. What the fools told him, he accepted. He thought to himself: “my kingdom will be destroyed if I don’t do this.” The fool didn’t know that what he was going to do will surely destroy his kingdom. The saints who have powers can do as they wish. If one requests them, they can make one happy in this world and in the next. Aurangzeb was proud of his kingdom. He saw himself as the greatest and everyone else as lower than him. He didn’t think there was anyone else in the world like him. He thought he was the wisest and the most powerful. He saw his father and grandfather as unwise. What was there to say about others? He thought: “nobody is as wise as I am. What I am doing, they could never have done that.” The egotistical fool swelled up with self-pride. His wisdom was covered. He had spoiled it with many saints. The one whose one word could do anything; Aurangzeb was about to ruin in with him. His kingdom was going to slip from his hands. He had the few things of the world but wanted to cause a conflict with the Parmeshwar. What he was going to receive, he had no idea. Everything was going to be ruined for him. He couldn’t see the obvious.
9-34 Aurangzeb’s Letter to the Satguru
Many Soobas and Umraavs along with Maulanas got together to speak to Aurangzeb. They were influencing him to hate the Guru. They said: “he helped Dara Shikoh. They became good friends. Just as your brother was our enemy, Guru Har Rai ji is our enemy as well.” When Nauranga heard this, he became angry towards Guru ji. He wrote a letter with deceit and corruption for Guru ji. He wrote many indirect accusations. He wrote: “this is the home of Guru Nanak Dev ji which is a home of Fakirs. He saw everyone as the same. Friend and foe are the same for this home. You helped Dara. You gave him the Sultanat of a foreign land. I caught him before you could send him to the other land. I had him killed. Your assistance was useless. Anyways, that was in the past. Let’s let it go. Keep your mind clean towards me now. Come and meet me yourself. I am the Badshah of the Takhat. I am with the radiance. I wish to meet you. Please don’t by lazy and come quickly.” He wrote a Shoknama in this way. He was a fool with deceit in his heart. A messenger was given the letter to go to Kiratpur.
The messenger reached Kiratpur and went to Satguru ji’s home. He read the letter. Sri Satguru ji was omniscient. He knew what the reason was for Aurangzeb’s calling. He knew that he was corrupt and full of deceit. Guru ji saw Aurangzeb’s foolishness and smiled. He thought to himself: “he wants to be an enemy of the saints.” Guru Har Rai ji had a response written: “the invitation you have sent to meet you, I have nothing to do with you. I don’t have a kingdom. I have no payment that I need to give you. I don’t wish to take anything from you. You are not my student. I am not your Peer. For what reason do you what to meet with me? What you wrote about Dara Shikoh, I gave him the kingdom of the Deen. It is the infinite kingdom. I gave him the kingdom without pain. He has the Deen. I wanted to give him the kingdom of the world but he saw the world as temporary and didn’t want it. He let it go. He didn’t ask for the kingdom of the world. He wanted the kingdom of the Deen. He has it. It is forever. It does not move. Whoever the Lord is compassionate towards, that is who gets this type of kingdom. He didn’t want the kingdom of the world. He is the Lord of the Deen. If you doubt that he has this kingdom or not, I will show you his kingdom in your dream. You will be convinced. When you go to sleep, think of Dara Shikoh. When you sleep, you will see him in your dream. You will see the good and bad kingdom. You should let go of your deceit. Understand that the Khuddah is the same for all.” In this way Guru ji wrote this letter. The messenger took the letter back to Nauranga.
The messenger brought the letter to Aurangzeb. The letter had the praises of Dara Shikoh in it. Aurangzeb’s chest burned when he read the letter. He couldn’t tolerate it. He thought to himself: “he doesn’t see my greatness. I am the Sultan of the world. He wrote my brother’s praises. I killed him under the Shariya.” He thought to himself in many ways.
At night, when Aurangzeb was going to sleep. In anger, he remembered Dara Shikoh. He laid down on his bed. When he fell asleep, he dreamt of Dara Shikoh. He saw that he was radiant. Dara Shikoh was sitting on a great throne. There was a huge canopy over his head. There was a big illumination around him. There were many fairies dancing in his court. They danced with emotions in Taans. Chaurs were waived all around him. It was a bright place. Many servants stood there with their hands folded. Dara Shikoh commanded them. The servants listened to him. Dara Shikoh wore a unique flower garland around his neck. It was radiant. There were attars and fragrances sprayed there. There were great smells all around. The palace was made of gold with beautiful deer and birds as work on the walls. The Naubats played, which gave joy. Veenas were played. The Gandarvs were praising Dara. Dara was commanding all. There were many soldiers with weapons in his court. There were horses and chariots there. It was a very attractive scene. There were golden pillars. When Aurangzeb looked towards himself, he was surprised. He was a Chandaal with dirty clothes. It was scary. He had a basket of feces on his head. He lifted it on his head and walked towards the court. It began to rain and so the feces dripped to his face with the rain water. It got into his eyes and forehead. Two people came running and hit Aurangzeb. They made him run away. Aurangzeb ran back. He slipped as he ran. The two soldiers would hit him again. He would run and keep falling. He couldn’t run properly. His appearance was scary. He kept falling as he ran. He fell hard and his eyes opened with fear. He then remembered the words of Guru Har Rai ji. He thought to himself: “what he wrote, that’s what happened.” He was upset and in pain. He saw Dara Shikoh’s radiance. He was angry to see his state in the dream. He said to himself: “what was this? I don’t understand this. Looks like the Guru of the Hindus did a magic trick on me. He was confused. He couldn’t sleep. He couldn’t tell anyone about his dream. He thought about it and got angry. The fool didn’t understand what he had seen. He had hatred towards Guru ji and said: “he did a magic trick on me. He showed me as a chandaal and showed my enemy as a king. I will send an army to arrest him. I will show him my power.” The fool was determined.
Aurangzeb called an Umraav and said to him: “get the Guru, any way you can. Take a regiment with you. If he fights, fight a battle with metal. Write to me. I will send a big army towards you. Arrest him or kill him. Don’t waste time on the way.” The Umraav took bullets, weapons, canons and swivel guns. He left Delhi and headed towards Kiratpur. On the first night, the Umraav set up camp. He ate and slept the night. The meat he ate, some of it was raw. He ate raw meat which couldn’t be digested. The Umraav died in his sleep due to a stomach problem. In the morning, the Umraav was buried. A letter was written to Aurangzeb. The army went back to Delhi. There was a great sorrow among the army.
After some days, Aurangzeb’s wish wasn’t fulfilled. He sent another Umraav with a big army. The second Umraav travelled from Delhi. He travelled a few days. He had canons and swivel guns. This Umraav’s chest began to burn and he became ill. He couldn’t mount his horse. His body was in pain. He couldn’t move. He stayed in the camp for a few days. He headed back to Delhi as he was sick. When Aurangzeb heard this, he got angry. He couldn’t send anyone. After a few days, he thought of Guru Har Rai ji. He sent a third Umraav. He left from Delhi. He also died due to some illness. He sent many others like this. Nobody reached half way. There was always some problem. They would go back home.
Sangat from Delhi came to see Guru Har Rai ji. They bowed and presented their gifts. They folded their hands and said: “you destroy obstacles. The Shah sent an army many times but they couldn’t get to you.” Guru Har Rai ji heard this and said: “this is my Pitamah Guru’s radiance. He was great. It is his words. He said that if an army would come to give me pain, they would be in pain on the way. Just as hail stones melt near fire, nobody would be able to come here. Whatever effort they make, it would be destroyed. His words are helping me. The Satguru destroys the enemy.” Guru Har Rai ji said this in the Sangat. The Sangat said: “we like your peace and joy. We wish for your enemies to be destroyed. Who is strong enough to look towards you?”
In Delhi, the Maulanas said to the Shah: “write with love. Bring him here so he thinks you have love for him. Once he comes here, do what you what with him. Don’t write harsh words. Respect him and call him here. Once he is here, do as you wish.”
9-35 Aurangzeb’s Ambassador comes to Satguru ji
When Aurangzeb heard the Maulanas’ words, he got happy and praised them. He felt a deep joy with their ideas. He quickly had a letter written: “you are on the Throne of Guru Ramdas ji. The whole world calls you the Guru. I have heard that you have many powers. Everyone says this. I know that your elders have met with my elders, many times. They have met on pleasant terms. Please come and give us your Darshan and remove our doubts. Show me your powers. Speak about the Path of Khuddah.” He wrote this letter and had it sent. He tried to show his strength as well, with cleverness. He sent it with an ambassador. He said: “go with wisdom and bring the Guru to Delhi.”
The ambassador set off for Kiratpur. He had travelled about 300 km. He crossed Ropar and reached Sri Keertanpur Sahib (the older name, named after Guru Nanak Dev ji doing Keertan in this area). He set up camp, where Guru Har Rai ji’s home was. Guru ji had 2,200 horses and soldiers. The soldiers always stayed with Guru ji. The horses were expensive and strong. When the horses neighed, the place looked beautiful. The ambassador saw the different-coloured horses. They jumped with agility. They went hunting everyday. Chabacha Sahib is the Gurduara where the feed of the horses was prepared. The warriors were strong and well-dressed. Their clothes were of fine cloths. They had good weapons. They wore jewellery. The ambassador noticed that the Guru was a good master who trained his men well. He estimated that the soldiers would fight hard. He knew that they wouldn’t ever show their backs. He saw such an army of the Guru. Many Sikh servants were always with Guru ji. People did the Darshan of the Guru ji and asked him for jobs. They were well-paid. The soldiers were ready for war and wished for it. Some Sikhs left their homes to live with the Guru. The ambassador was surprised to see how devoted the Sikhs were to the Guru. They were ready to die for the Guru. He saw the beautiful city. The army was great and well-disciplined. Sri Guru Har Rai ji implemented a peaceful state. Guru ji was omniscient and sensed the ambassador.
Guru Har Rai ji ordered for a court for the next day. Beautiful rugs were laid out. The guards stood with spears and shields. The Chobdhaars held golden maces. A beautiful canopy which had zarri pictures and work done, hung above. The tassels were silk and zarri. It was tied with silk ropes. Guru ji slowly walked into the court and sat on his throne after bowing to it. He was the peaceful form of Akaal Purakh. He had Gyaan and Vairagya in his heart. The servants waived Chaurs and fans over his head. The fans had pearls and diamonds in them. Many Masands and Mevras sat in the court. They were rich and wore expensive silk cholas and Dastaars. The soldiers were in attention and standing in the court. It was a court of kings. Guru ji wore his Shasters. Everyone sat down. The Sangat from many lands came and sat in the court. They came for Guru ji’s Darshan. They all brought their offerings. The Sangat came with horses and weapons for Guru ji. Some brought money and food. They did his Darshan. The Mevra did the Ardaas. People bowed from every direction to Guru ji. After some time, Guru ji sent for the ambassador.
The ambassador came into the court and was really impressed. Guru ji’s handsome form was worshiped. Many bowed and folded their hands. The ambassador bowed and sat in the court. He placed the letter of Aurangzeb at the feet of Guru ji. He said: “the Badshah wishes to see you. He sent me to you. Please come with me to Delhi, quickly. Give him your Darshan. You are the treasure of virtues. Show him your great powers. He is happy to see powers. Make him bow to you. He will become your disciple. He wishes to see miracles of saints. This is a great wish of his. He wishes to see this. Without seeing this, he will not stop asking. He is stubborn. He has seen your glory.” The ambassador couldn’t show his strength. He was humbled by Guru Har Rai ji’s radiance. Satguru ji heard this and had rooms prepared for the ambassador and his servants.
Food and respect were given to the ambassador and his men. For some time, Guru ji sat in the court and fulfilled the wishes of the Sikhs. He then went to his home. He slept the night. The next day, Guru ji called for a court with only his closest and senior Sikhs. The Bedis were called. The Trehans and Bhallas were called. The Sodhis and senior warriors were called. Guru ji’s jot was like the sun. He looked radiant in the Sangat, like the sun with the stars. He destroyed the attachment. He had the complete Gyaan. His glory was spread in everyone home. He was radiant like the moon. The court was in session. Brahmgyaanis like Bhai Bhagtoo ji, Bhai Pheroo ji, Baba Bhaanu ji, Baba Lal Chand ji, Pandit Daya Ram ji and other Sikhs sat there. Guru ji gave Gyaan to kill the Agyaan. He would save the Sikhs from the death. He looked like the King of the Devatas. Guru ji said to all: “you are all worship-worthy. Some of you are the descendants of the elder Gurus. Some are the great Sikhs of the elder Gurus. You are the lotus flowers of the Sarovar of the Guru’s family. You are fragrant and full of powers. You can destroy problems like the sun destroys the darkness. I wish to tell you that I have been called by the Badshah, Aurangzeb. He is stubborn in his Deen. He heard of the glory of the Guru’s home. It is spread in the whole world. The Delhi Badshah wishes to see the power. He sent an ambassador. Somebody should stand up that will keep the honour of the Guru’s home. This is a great task. It is of the honour. The person should have powers and patience as well. That person should go to the Turk Badshah. That person should go with enthusiasm and without fear. If I go, it is against the tradition of the Guru’s Throne. I can’t show miracles for such reasons. Someone needs to show the powers and destroy the Badshah’s pride. Someone needs to get ready and go.” Guru ji said this to the whole court. Everyone heard this and thought about this. They thought to themselves: “Aurangzeb is stubborn and is corrupt. He has killed many saints because of miracles. He has Tapasya from his previous births; that’s why the saints didn’t curse him. They became martyrs. He has no remorse. He destroyed Kanshi, Mathura and other places. He destroyed many Hindu Teeraths. He wants to convert the whole world to Islam. He is the death of Dharma. In the court of Turks, many scholars are there who are smarter than the next. They are excellent and wise debaters. One must be able to debate. Many Peers with powers live under Aurangzeb’s influence. His Tapasya makes them helpless. Many problems will arise in Delhi. Many discussions happen there day and night.” After thinking about all this, everyone stayed quiet. They lowered their necks and remained quiet for a long time. They looked at each other but didn’t speak.
