8-6 Wedding of Sri Tegh Bahadhur ji

At about 8 pm, the Bharaat was called for dinner.  Guru Hargobind Sahib ji and the Bharaat went to eat dinner.  Sri Tegh Bahadhur ji was handsome.  He took permission from his father and led the Bharaat with many musical instruments playing.  There were fireworks and torches.  The Bharaat headed to Baba Lal Chand ji’s home.  The fireworks were blown towards the sky.  It was like a garden of fire at night.  There was a lot of noise.  Some firecrackers spun round and some made pictures in the sky.  It was quite the scene to see.  The people were happy to see the fire show.  There were crowds everywhere.  The Bharaat walked slowly.  People were eager to see the warriors with Guru ji.  The Bharaat reached Baba Lal Chand ji’s home.  They sat in lines.  A sandalwood stool was laid out for Guru ji.  It had an expensive cloth laid out on it.  Guru ji was seated with great respect.  His hands were washed and a plate full of Pakvaans was placed in front of him.  Many types of foods were brought for Guru ji.  Everyone else was served as well.  The food was delicious.

Everyone was soon satiated with the great food.  The servers washed everyone’s hands.  Guru ji put money into the plates for the dishwashers.  They all came back to the Dhera.  At about 10 pm, it was time for the Laavan.  A person was sent to inform Guru ji of the marriage time.  Guru ji and the Bharaat came for the wedding.  Sri Tegh Bahadhur ji was sat near the Bedi.  The Pooja of Ganpati was done.  Money was given to the Brahmins.  Sri Mata Gujri ji was brought out and seated beside Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji on his left.  The pooja was done and the fire was lit.  Ghee was poured on top, which made the fire bigger.  The Brahmin then directed the Pheray.  The Laags were given at that time.  The traditions of the marriage were done.  The Bharaat came back to their Dhera.  It was 1689 (Vikram), when the wedding occurred.  Guru ji and everyone else went to sleep after.

Everyone woke up in the morning and bathed.  The recitation of Gurbani happened everywhere by the Sikhs.  Many Raags were sung as the sun illuminated during the day.  The wise Rababis sung Shabads.  The Gurbani brought joy to the hearts of the Sikhs.  Guru ji held a Divaan in which many came with bliss.  Many beggars came.  They received money and were happy.  They sang the praises of Guru ji.  Sri Satguru Hargobind Sahib ji was very radiant.  His big and wide body was impressive.  His 4 sons sat with him, looking like the 4 Vedas.  Guru ji was like Brahma, the supreme Gyan.  Guru ji was like Inder, sitting amongst the Devatas.  There were huge Chaurs waived over Guru ji’s head.  The praises of Guru ji could not be fully said.  He was a great king, radiant in his court.

Everyone was called for food.  There were tarps laid out along the way, on which the Bharaat walked on.  Everyone was seated in lines.  A special stool was set for Guru ji.  Jalebis, Ladoos and Nugdas were placed in front of Guru ji.  In this way, the food was brought out.  It was a great celebration.  The women of the village came to do the Sithineeya.  They respectfully but jokingly said Guru ji’s name and said jokes.  Everyone was happy, seeing the traditions and celebrating.  Everyone ate as much as they wished.  They put money into the plates and came back to the Dhera.  Three nights were spent in this way.

Baba Lal Chand ji brought out the dowry gifts.  He gave many clothes and other gifts.  He then folded his hands and said: “I couldn’t give anything big.  I couldn’t do much Seva.  I am giving my daughter to you for Seva.  She will do the Seva in the home of the Guru.  Please accept her, Guru ji.”  Mata Bishan Kaur ji folded her hands and spoke with humility as well.  Satguru ji heard their request and became compassionate.  He said: “you have given us everything by giving your daughter.  What else is their left, after giving your daughter?”  Baba Lal Chand ji bowed to Guru ji’s feet.  He then called for a big palanquin.  Mata Gujri ji was seated in the Dholi and given the wisdom to serve her husband.  The Bharaat was given leave.  Money was showered over the Dholi.

The Dholi and the Bharaat came back home.  The people of the village showered money over the Dholi as they walked through the markets.  Many instruments played.  Guru ji came inside his home.  The women of Kartarpur received them and sang songs of joy.  Mata Nanaki ji was between the women and eagerly came to the front to see her son and new daughter-in-law.  When the couple came to the door, Mata Nanaki ji took a pot of water and circumvented it around the couple’s head.  She then drank the water.  She was very happy with her son.  The family traditions were completed and the couple was brought inside the home.

Money was placed into the lap of Mata Gujri ji when her face was seen for the first time by the whole family.  The couple was sitting in a nice place as the other women all came to see the new bride, one by one.  They gave money to the bride and praised her beauty.  They said: “Sri Tegh Bahadhur ji and his wife are drenched in beauty.  Vidhata has taken so much beauty to make this couple.”  The bracelet that tied the bride and groom together was opened.  I, Kavi Santokh Singh, have stated the Katha of Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji’s wedding.  It was not stated in too much detail.  Reading this Katha will give joyful rewards.

The whole family was happy.  They stayed for a few more days.  They didn’t want to leave.  Many relatives had come from all around.  The family was filled with love.  They had met after a long time.  The wedding was a very joyful atmosphere.  It was so much fun that people forgot about their homes.  After many days, people thought to themselves: “it is right to leave now.”  The family was given clothes and jewellery as they left.  The Trehans and the Bhallas went back.  They spoke words of love.  Baba Hari Chand ji (the father of Mata Nanaki ji) and Bhai Rama ji got on their carts and went back to home.  They praised Guru Hargobind Sahib ji as they travelled home.  Baba Duara ji and his wife went home.  Baba Sadhoo ji and Baba Dharma ji left, after bowing to Satguru ji.  Bibi Veero ji met her father and both her mothers as she left with her husband.  She was given money and clothes along with jewellery.  She met her brothers with love as well.  She was happy seeing her whole family.  Bhai Jodh Rai ji came to Guru ji and folded his hands.  He put his son at Guru ji’s feet, who was named Bhai Fatha ji.  His brother Bhai Salaim Shai ji bowed to Guru ji.  Bhai Jodh Rai ji’s wife, the daughter of a Sikh, the queen of Kangar, came to bow to Guru ji’s feet.  Guru ji blessed everyone and gave them leave.  They all went back home, singing the praises of Guru ji.  Bhai Sadhoo ji and Bhai Roop Chand ji came and bowed their heads to Guru ji.  They all took leave as well.  Guru ji blessed them.  In this way, the family met Guru ji and went back to their homes.  They sang Guru ji’s praises and did Simran of Satnam.  They were all given joy.

Satguru ji spent time like this in Kartarpur with joy.  On special days, the Sikh Sangat would come to see Guru ji.  Sangat came on Diwali and Vaisakhi to do Darshan of Guru ji.  They brought money and gifts for Guru ji as they bowed to his feet.  Money, jewellery, and unique silk clothes came.  Various weapons and expensive horses were brought by the Sikhs.  Whatever wish the Sikhs came with, was fulfilled by Guru ji.  Sikhs from far away lands came to see Guru ji.  Whoever was regarded as a Sikh by Satguru ji, they were assisted by Guru ji in every way.  Many Sikhs came with their Dasvands.  Many brought promised gifts for their tasks being fulfilled.  Many people came to Guru ji for the first time.  They did Darshan of Guru ji and were in bliss.  Some asked for sons and some asked for Bhagti and Gyan.  They wanted to be focussed on their Aatma.  They wanted joy in this world and the highest status in the afterlife.

8-7 The Gifts from the Sikhs

Six months passed, living in Kartarpur.  Diwali came.  Countless people came to the Mela.  Sikhs came from afar to have their wishes fulfilled.  They did Darshan of Guru ji with love and devotion.  In this way Guru ji spent his time.  He had killed the sinners and helped the Saints.  Many people came to Kartarpur.  People were coming and going.  From the East, many Sikhs came, bringing gifts and money.  Sangat from the Islands from the Bay of Bengal and lower also came.  They made a great effort to travel such a far distance.  In the same way, people from the south came, as far as Sri Lanka.  They did Guru ji’s Darshan and bowed their heads.  People from Odissa and Bengal came.  People from Angra came.  Their wishes were fulfilled.  They were happy.  People from the west also came.  Muslims and Hindus came with love.  They brought weapons and horses.  They did Darshan and had their wishes fulfilled.  The Sikhs of the north came.  They brought gifts and money.  Guru Nanak Dev ji had travelled the world and spread Sikhi everywhere.  From wherever people could come, they made the effort and came to see the Guru.  From where people couldn’t come from, they would make Karah Prashaad and remember the Guru.  They got together and did Simran of Guru ji.  They would do Ardaas for their wishes to be fulfilled.  Guru ji’s radiance was everywhere.  Everyone praised Guru ji.

It was soon Vaisakhi.  The Mela was big.  It was a greater reward to do Darshan of Guru ji on that day.  Sikhs from every direction came to Kartarpur.  Many gifts and unique items were brought for Guru ji.  They presented the gifts with love and enthusiasm.  Some wanted to receive Mukti.  Some wanted happiness.  The day of Vaisakhi had thousands of Sikhs coming.  There were tents everywhere, for miles.  There were artists everywhere.  There was Keertan and Katha everywhere.  Wherever there was water, that is where people would set up their tents.  When Guru Arjan Dev ji had come here, he had many wells built.  There was a crowd everywhere.  Gurbani was sounding everywhere.  Jaikaras of Guru ji were said.  The complete Guru gave his Darshan to all.  Rugs and tarps were laid out for the Sangat to sit on.  The Divaan was to be in session.  The Sevadaars made preparations to set up the Darbaar.  Colourful rugs were laid out.  Guru ji’s throne was set up high.  The canopy had a Zarri border.  It had diamonds and pearls in it.  The throne had Zarri borders as well.  Craftsmen set up the court well.  The throne had round pillows on it with expensive cloth.  Silk ropes tied it together with pearls hanging from it.

Guru ji woke up at Amritvela and bathed.  He wore a white chola made of a fine fabric.  He fastened his swords and a shield on his back.  He tied his Kumerkassa and was ready to go to his court.  He walked slowly.  His feet were beautiful, like the lotus.  He walked and blessed everyone he saw.  The warriors walked behind Guru ji.  Guru Hargobind Sahib ji came to the Throne of Guru Nanak Dev ji and bowed to it.  Guru ji, the destroyer of sins, then sat on the Throne.  The Sevadaars waived Chaurs, like swans, over Guru ji’s head.  The court was full with many people.  This court embarrassed Inder’s court.  The Mevra stood and did the Ardaas of the Sikhs.  The four sons of Guru ji: Baba Gurditta ji, Baba Sooraj Mal ji, Baba Ani Rai ji, and Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji, sat by Guru ji.  The 2 grandsons: Baba Dheermal ji and Guru Har Rai ji, were also looking radiant in the court.  The Bhatts and Naqeebs stood up and sang the praises of Guru ji.  Golden maces were held by the Chobdhaars.  Guru ji commanded everyone to come and see him.  Many came to have their wishes fulfilled.  The Rababis sang Shabads of Gurbani.  The Sangat listened with love.  Keertan gave them joy and peace.  The Sikhs got ready and came to see Guru ji.  They brought their gifts and placed them in front of Guru ji.  They did Guru ji’s Darshan.  The leader Sikhs sat at the front.  Thousands of Sikhs came.  They were not satiated seeing Guru ji.  They wanted to stay with him.  It was like many bees around a lotus.  Many Ardaas were done.  Some came to thank Guru ji.  The gifts piled up.  Money, clothes, jewellery, weapons and horses were brought.  Guru ji gave joy to all.

There was one Sikh who was a great Saudagar from Badaksha Nagar.  He traded in many countries.  He earned thousands a day.  He brought his Dasvand for Guru ji.  He had prayed for his tasks to be fulfilled.  He had money gathered for that too.  He brought money and expensive gifts for Guru ji.  He had bought the best items for Guru ji.  He paid 100,000 Rajitpuns for a horse for Guru ji.  The horse was very clever and strong.  He had a chola made for Guru ji.  It was a very expensive cloth which had real gold wire embroidered on it.  The material was very fine and expensive.  He had more work done on the chola and paid a lot of money for it.  He had a Cheera Dastaar made for Guru ji.  The ends of the Cheera had many jewels embedded into it.  He bought a white hawk for Guru ji.  It looked like a swan; it was so white.  It was bought from a foreign land.  He paid whatever was asked for it.  He wanted to make Guru ji happy.  He had a two-edged Khanda made of faulaad.  He had a Kalgi made with precious stones embedded into it.  He bought a beautiful shield, made of a mixed alloy for Guru ji.  He brought all these things to Kartarpur.  He bowed to Guru ji’s feet and presented these items.  He couldn’t blink when he saw Guru ji.  He stared at Guru ji with amazement.  He stood there with a deep love.  He had his hands folded.  Guru ji looked at him with joy.  He asked him: “where are you from?  What wish of yours was fulfilled?”  The Saudagar spoke: “you already know everything.  Nothing is hidden from you, but I will say it because you commanded me to.  I am from Badaksha.  I trade in many countries.  I trade in the thousands.  I made a lot of profit.  I took out my Dasvand from that profit.  I collected for a very long time.  When I faced obstacles, I prayed and promised to bring money for you.  When my tasks went through successfully, I took money out for that too.  You helped me all the time.  I combined the Dasvand and the promised money.  I wanted to give you all this money when I would come to see you.  I wanted to give you all these gifts.  A long time passed.  There was a Fakir that lived with you and met me in my land.  I asked him about your nature.  The Fakir told me that you like weapons.  He told me that you like to ride nice horses and fight battles; you like to hunt and keep hawks; you keep a royal grandeur; you love getting weapons and horses; you are happy with such a person who brings you all these things.  You touch those weapons and bless the Sikhs with many joys.  I learned this from the Fakir and started to collect the best things I can find.  I paid a lot of money for the horse.  It is beautiful and clever.  The shield and Khanda I brought are very expensive along with the Kalgi.  I then found this rare white hawk for you.  I had an expensive chola made for you.  Much of my money was spent on these things.  The rest of the money, I place in front of you.  I got golden Dinars, so they would be easier to carry instead of Rajitpuns.  I present them for the Guru’s Darbar.  Please accept these gifts.  I brought them with great effort.  You keep the honour of your servants.  This is the promise to your Sikhs, oh Gareeb Nivaaj.”

8-8 Gifts to Painday Khan

Satguru ji heard the Saudagar’s words and saw his deep devotion.  Guru ji was impressed and said: “your life has been blessed.  The troubles of your family will all be gone.  You came from such a far distance and spent so much money because of love.  You took out Dasvand for the Guru and wanted the Darshan of the Guru with faith and devotion.  I am very happy with you.  Ask for a boon.  Your wish will be fulfilled.”  The Saudagar folded his hands and said: “you are the best at seeing loving.  You are the greatest.  I am blessed and satiated with your Darshan.  You looked at me with your holy vision.  This was a great blessing.  You have given me the joy in every way.  Give me the boon of love.  I want the love for your feet to grow.  The way you sit before me now, with your shield, sword, Kumerkassa tied to your waste, Kalgi sitting on your Dastaar, the quiver hanging from your shoulder, the bow held in your hand; I want this form to be engrained in mind forever.  I want to be able to see this form of yours in mind forever.  Just as the Sumer Mountain has been standing forever, unmoving, may my devotion never move.  I wish to do Simran of your name, all day and night.  I want to have the Simran of “Sri Har Govind,” repeated in my mind continuously.  Please give me this boon, oh Master.  Bless me, oh omniscient one.  Tell I hadn’t met you, I was under the control of my Karma.  Wherever I take a birth, I wish to be your Sikh and sing your praises.”  Guru ji was very impressed and said: “you won’t be born again!  You asked for my form to be instilled into your heart.  The heart in which I live in, does not take another birth.  You’re not bound to Karma anymore.  You wish has been granted.  You won’t be in the cycle of birth and death again.”  The Sikh sat with Guru ji for a while and then went back to his camp by Guru ji’s permission.

The gifts that the Saudagar brought, they were very expensive.  Guru ji looked at the gifts.  Guru ji checked the horse.  It was strong and clever.  Guru ji then picked up the white hawk.  It was very skilled.  It was from a cold land.  Baba Gurditta ji said: “this is from a foreign land.  This is rare.  It is big and white.  It looks trained.”  Guru ji understood his son’s wishes from his words.  Baba Gurditta ji wanted the hawk.  Guru ji said: “yes, this hawk is rare.  You can have it and go hunting with it.  Go and test it on other birds.  Take it hunting tomorrow morning and see how it hunts.”  Guru ji then looked towards Painday Khan and gave him the expensive horse the Sikh brought.  He also gave him the silk Chola and Cheera.  Guru ji said: “wear this chola and tie the Cheera.”  Guru ji then tested the Khanda and noticed it was made of a superior Faulaad iron.  Bhai Painday Khan ji obeyed and wore the Chola and tied the Cheera on his head.  He smiled and did a Salaam to Guru ji in gratitude.  Guru ji smiled and said: “take this Khanda and wear it as well.”  When Painday Khan ji wore the Khanda, he became more radiant.  The Chola was expensive.  Guru ji was happy and said: “when you come to see me, wear this Chola, Khanda and shield on your body.  Get on top of this horse and take it for a round.  See how clever and skilled it is.  You’ll have to test it.”  Bhai Painday Khan ji was really happy.  He wore the shield and Khanda.  He thought to himself with pride: “he sees me as a strong warrior.  I fight with skill on the battlefield.  He needs me in battle.  This is the reason why Satguru ji is giving me all these gifts.  He didn’t think anyone is equal to me.”  In this way, Painday Khan thought this way.  He took the gifts and became egotistical.  He got on top of the horse that was bought with 100,000 Rajitpuns.

Painday Khan rode his new horse slowly first.  He then moved the horse into a fast trot.  Next, he made the horse ran fast.  The horse ran really fast.  It left the wind behind, it ran so fast.  Deer were nothing in front of this horse’s speed.  It travelled a great distance in a small time period.  It was as though it wanted to teach the mind how to move fast.  Its eyes were sharp, like a young beautiful woman’s eyes.  It was as though this horse taught the woman’s eyes how to be sharp.  Painday Khan was riding the horse.  The dirt flew as the horse’s shoes ran on the ground.  The horse was hard to spot.  Everyone was amazed to see the horse run.  They all said: “it’s so expensive.”  Satguru ji saw this and said: “it runs like a tornado.”  Everyone heard Guru ji.  Guru ji named the horse “Vao Varola (Tornado).”  Painday Khan made the horse run faster.  The horse’s legs touched its body as it ran.  The legs were circular in its run.  The hind legs were bent as they ran.  Its strides were long.  Painday Khan tested the horse’s jump as well.  The horse picked up all 4 legs while jumping.  The horse was strong and well-skilled.  Painday Khan brought the horse back to Guru ji and stood there.  Everyone was happy to see the horse.  Guru ji was happy and said: “Sri Gurditta ji will go hunting in the morning.  Painday Khan, go with him.  He will test the hawk on the birds.  Go home and rest now.  Come back in the morning and ride with the Sikhs.”  Painday Khan ji bowed to Guru ji and went home happy.  His ego was inflated.  He thought to himself: “there is no one else like me in the world.  The most expensive things come for Guru ji.  He doesn’t keep them, and gives them to me.  He doesn’t give things to others.  He gives them to me.  He loves me more than his own sons.  He loves me a lot.  I am a strong and big warrior.  He knows this and loves me.  The Sikhs brings the best things, he gives them to me, without me asking for them.  Guru ji thinks I am the best.  He trusts me in war.  He knows I am the best.  He knows that I can make him win the wars.  That’s why he gives me the best things.”  In this way, Painday Khan was filled with pride.  The Khan went home with ego.  This ego had Raavan, the king of Lanka, killed.  This ego destroyed the Kaurav’s family.  Haranakash and Harinakashyup did not remain.  Svaasbeerj, Rakatbheej, Sunbh and Nishumb were destroyed because of their ego.  Kumbkaran, Kumbh and Nikunbh were destroyed.  How many proud warriors do I talk about?  Many great warriors were killed because of their egos.  Painday Khan was nothing.  He will give his life now.  Destiny has done this to him.  It was controlling his mind now.  Taking the gifts, his ego has gotten bigger.  He kept on thinking of his greatness.  He came home with a big ego.

As Painday Khan rode home, he met his son-in-law on the way.  Usmaan Khan saw his father-in-law’s radiance and was happy.  He asked him: “where did you get this horse from?  Your Chola is very nice.  Where are you coming from?”  Painday Khan said to Usmaan Khan: “I received all these things from Guru ji.  They were brought by a Sikh from a far away land.  He spent Lakhs on these things.  The Cheera has gems and gold on both ends.  Guru ji made me wear this in his court.  He told me to wear these things when I come to his court.”  Usmaan Khan heard this and said: “these things are not for you.  You are old.  I am young.  Give me the horse.  I will take it for a round.  Give me the Chola in the morning.  I will wear it.  This is the best thing.  They only look good on young people.”  Painday Khan said: “I can’t do that.  If Guru ji would find out, he would be angry with me.  Don’t speak like a child.  There are many things in our house.  You can take anything.  These will remain with me that I just received.”  In this way, Painday Khan spoke with a little anger.  He took his horse on ahead and showed his neighbours his new horse.  He made his horse jump around and showed off his greatness to everyone.  He wanted everyone to see how close he was to Guru ji and how well he was looked after by him.  All of the Khans saw this.  Whoever he met, he said to them: “I get gifts like these because of my strength and skills.”

8-9 Painday Khan’s Son-in-law Grabs the Baaz

Usmaan Khan was upset.  He wanted his father-in-law’s gifts.  He decided to go to his mother-in-law: “I will go to her.  If I still don’t get the gifts, I will leave home.  I will become a Fakir and leave their daughter.  The beautiful Chola and Cheera is good for me.  I want them.  My father-in-law is old (Painday Khan was around 35 and Usmaan Khan was about 18) but he still wants to be a young person.  He doesn’t give a great son like me, the gifts.  I can’t take this.”  Usmaan Khan came home and sat beside his mother-in-law.  He began to cry like a child.  The mother-in-law saw this and said: “why are you upset?”  Usmaan Khan said: “Abha Jaan insulted me.  When I asked him for the new clothes he got from the Guru, he refused.  He didn’t let me ride his new horse.  If you can get me those things, then it’s good.  Otherwise, I will kill myself.  I am the son of a Pathaan.  I can’t tolerate insults.  I have never been refused in my life before.  You love me like a son, but it’s fake.  You don’t see me as your son.  Get me the clothes, horse and weapons and I will live.  This is my decision.”  The mother-in-law heard this and gave him hope.  She said: “don’t cry.  I will get you your things.  You will be the master of this home.  This is all for you.  We collected all these things for you.  Let Khan Sahib ji come home.  I will speak to him.  The whole house is yours.  The horse and weapons are all yours.”  Painday Khan’s wife wiped the boy’s eyes and touched his head with love.

Painday Khan came home soon.  He was really happy with his new gifts.  He sat on his bed and checked his new Khanda.  He placed it on his pillow.  It was hot so he took off the shield from his back and hung it.  He took his clothes off and hung them as well.  He was always humble in front of his wife.  The smart wife came to him.  Painday Khan was happy to see his clothes.  His wife came smiling and said: “give me the gifts the Guru gave you.  Usmaan Khan is asking for them.  He is angry and keeps crying.  He is a child.  What are we going to do with them?  He cried a lot.  He said you insulted him.  This was not good what you did.  If you say “no” to the son-in-law, that’s a bad thing.  You can still say “no” to your own son.  Usmaan Khan is the proud son of a Pathaan.  If he runs away, our daughter will be ruined.  It will be trouble for the both of us.  Give me the gifts that Guru ji gave you.”  Painday Khan said: “Guru ji gave me these things and said to me: “wear these things when you come to me.  Ride this horse when you go hunting.”  I just got these things today.  I can’t give them today.  In a few days I will make Guru ji happy and then I will ask him if I can give these things to Usmaan Khan.  I will need permission.  The child is foolish.  He doesn’t know how to be with kings and Gurus.  I am his servant.  I have to obey him.  He is being stubborn like a child.  The Guru that gives us such expensive things, how can I disobey him?”  His wife said: “what are you saying Khan Sahib?  Don’t you know how to keep a son-in-law?  He said he will become a Fakir or kill himself.  Will your honour be great then?  Our daughter is young.  We will see her single.  It will be like death to us.  What will your honour be then?  You need to be smart about this.”  She spoke with anger and picked up the gifts from Guru Sahib from the pillow.  She said: “you get expensive things from the Guru everyday.  Can’t you live without these things?”  Painday Khan said: “what are you doing?!  Why are you ruining my job?”  Painday Khan grabbed the Chola but his wife smiled and took the Chola be pulling it harder.  Painday Khan couldn’t say anything after that.  The warriors that can’t be killed on the battlefield; they can take bullets and swords but won’t leave the battle; a beautiful woman can defeat those warriors in a second.  A woman can manipulate such warriors.  Painday Khan lowered his head and sat down.  He was upset and thought to himself: “what will Guru ji say when I see him again?”  The fool kept sitting down, worried an upset.

Usmaan Khan took the Chola and Cheera.  He put them on.  The mother-in-law was happy.  Usmaan Khan was happy.  He had never seen such beautiful clothes before.  They were royal.  He tied the Cheera and put the Chola on his body.  He fastened the Khanda and shield to his body.  He then started walking around the village to show off to others.  Painday Khan was upset.  He didn’t drink water nor did he eat.  He was worried.  He couldn’t sleep all night.

It was morning but Painday Khan didn’t get up.  He laid in his bed like a sick person.  Usmaan Khan bathed and wore his new chola.  He tied the Cheera on his head which had the Zarri part hanging from the back.  He fastened the Khanda and shield.  They looked great.  He saddled the horse without asking Painday Khan.  He eagerly mounted the horse and went hunting.  He was happy.  He made the horse run.  The horse was skilled and strong.  Usmaan Khan looked for deer to hunt.  He then got tired and came to a garden.  He rested in the garden.

Sri Gurditta ji got ready the same morning.  He obeyed his father and went hunting.  He saddled his beautiful horse.  The Mir Shikaris were called along with the warriors.  Baba ji noticed that Painday Khan did not come.  He waited for a while and then set off with the warriors.  He took the new white Baaz with him.  He entered the thick jungle and let the Baaz go.  The Baaz killed a few birds.  It was fed the meat.  The Sikhs and the Baaz hunted.  Everyone praised the Baaz: “there is no other Baaz like this one.  He kills the birds with one strike.”  The Baaz was full after hunting many birds.  The Baaz came back to Baba Gurditta ji.  It was then afternoon and the day got hot.  They all headed back to Kartarpur.  Where Painday Khan’s village of Chhotay Mir was, there was a small lake beside it.  Baba Gurditta ji and the warriors travelled along the lake on their horses.  As they rode, a Surkhab bird (golden pheasant) flew up from the lake.  Everyone saw the bird fly up.  Sri Baba Gurditta ji commanded: “let the Baaz go.  Let it hunt the Surkhab.”  The Mir Shikari said: “Baba ji, the Baaz is full.  It won’t hunt it.”  Baba ji insisted that the Baaz be let go.  The Baaz flew up but didn’t chase the Surkhab.  The Baaz went to the same garden where Usmaan Khan was resting.  The other birds in the garden all flew away, fearing the Baaz.  Usmaan Khan looked around to see why the birds all flew away.  He looked and noticed that a white hawk had came into the garden.  He made an effort to capture the Baaz.  It was a beautiful hawk.  He caught the Baaz and said to himself: “Khuddah sent me a gift!”  He looked around and saw no one.  He quickly mounted his horse and ran away.  He didn’t want anyone else to take it form him.  He hid the hawk and came to his home.

Usmaan Khan came home and said to his mother-in-law: “Khuddah gave me a new Baaz.  I got it without any effort.  It is really expensive.”  The mother-in-law said: “son, hide it!  Make sure nobody finds out about it.  Make sure its owners don’t come and fight over it.”  Painday Khan heard the conversation.  He got up and came into the room.  He recognized the Baaz and said: “this is the Guru’s Baaz.  I will take it back to Guru ji and ask him for forgiveness for everything.  He wanted me to wear the clothes and ride this horse.  He told me to come today but I didn’t go.  It was my mistake.  When he sees this hawk, he will be happy with me.  He will see me as his own with love.  My job will remain with joy.  We receive all this wealth from him.”  Usmaan Khan said in anger: “Khan ji, why are you rejecting your religion?  By becoming the servant of a Hindu Guru and eating his morsels, you are without honour.  Can you not get work from other places?  Other Khans work.  Do they all work for the Guru?  Who feeds them?  You are afraid of the Guru and want to give him the Baaz back and ask for forgiveness.  If the Guru finds out about the Baaz, he can send his army.  I will fight them.  If he overpowers me, I will go to the Badshah.  I will tell him, because the Guru took the Badshah’s Baaz.  I will give the Shah this Baaz and tell him that I took his revenge for him.  The Badshah will be happy with me.  I am not weak like you.  I have self-respect and honour.  I am the son of a Pathaan.  I will die on the battlefield but I won’t give the Baaz.  Khuddah gave me this rare Baaz.  Which man will be such a coward to give the Baaz back?”  Painday Khan was upset and worried.  He didn’t say anything.  He couldn’t do anything.  He regretted this.  He saw a big fight coming.

The Mir Shikaris looked for the Baaz and came to the garden.  They were surprised to not find the Baaz there.  They looked around in every direction.  They were surprised that the Baaz wasn’t anywhere.  They then came to Painday Khan’s door and called for him.  Painday Khan was about to go out but his wife said to him: “look, don’t tell them about the Baaz.  If you want to see your son-in-law alive, deny everything.  Tell them the Baaz never came here.  Your son-in-law will kill himself otherwise.  You’ve already heard what he said.”  Painday Khan came out of his home and met the Mir Shikari.  He said to him: “I haven’t seen the Baaz.”  Painday Khan made an announcement in the village: “if anyone has seen the Guru’s Baaz, tell Painday Khan.  Don’t hide it.”  The Mir Shikaris went to the other homes.  Nobody checked Painday Khan’s home.  They looked for an hour.  Usmaan Khan came and said: “we looked everywhere but couldn’t find the Baaz.”  Painday Khan lied, inspired by death calling for him.  He deceived the Guru’s salt that he had been eating all his life.  The Mir Shikari heard this and was shocked.  He thought to himself: “there is a big deception going on here.”  The Mir Shikari said: “we have checked thoroughly.  We saw the Baaz come in this direction.  Please check carefully.  If you find the Baaz, bring it to Guru ji.”  The Mir Shikaris rode off in amazement.  They met with Baba Gurditta ji and said: “the Baaz is definitely with the Khans.”

8-10 Painday Khan in Guru ji’s Presence

The Mir Shikaris came to Baba Gurditta ji.  They told him that the Khans have hid the Baaz: “they have the white Baaz.  They aren’t afraid.  They made an announcement right away in the village.  They saw the nice Baaz and got greedy.  We know for sure that the Baaz didn’t go anywhere else.  We kept an eye on it when it flew.  They are trying to deceive us.  They are lying.  We figured them out.”  Baba Gurditta ji heard this and thought about it.  He was omniscient.  He went back to his father.  He was a little worried.  He came back to Guru ji, quickly.

Baba Gurditta ji came to his father and bowed to him.  He sat down.  Guru ji saw the look of worry on his son’s face and said: “you went hunting today with the new Baaz.  How was the Baaz?  How did it bite the birds?  Did it go far to hunt?”  The Guru’s son told Guru ji the whole story: “Guru ji, Pitha ji, we went into the jungle.  The Mir Shikaris released the hawk.  It killed many birds.  None got away.  The bird that it would grab, it could not move any of its limbs.  The Baaz ate as much as it wanted to.  When it was full, we headed back.  As we travelled by Chhotay Mir, a Surkhab bird flew upwards.  We released the Baaz onto it but it didn’t hunt it down because it was full.  It flew into the village.  The Mir Shikaris ran after it.  One of the Pathaans saw it and hid it in their home.  We searched the area but couldn’t find it.  Prabhoo ji, you can do as you please.  It can’t be anywhere else besides Painday Khan’s home.”  The omniscient Guru, that knows every heart, who knows who has deceived who, knew what had happened.  He looked into the future with his divine sight and smiled.  He said: “the Turks have lost their honour.”  Guru ji didn’t say anything after that.  He already forgave Painday Khan in his heart.  He was extremely patient.

There was a great Mela in Kartarpur.  Many Sikhs came to do Darshan of Guru ji.  They bowed to Guru ji and had their wishes fulfilled.  They couldn’t get enough of looking at Guru ji and being in his presence.  They were really happy sitting by Guru ji, in the court.  Some came to the front to listen to Guru ji.  Some stood and tried to capture the Guru’s form in their minds.  They accepted Sikhi with faith and devotion.  They did Simran of Satnam and wished for support in the afterlife.  The Mela went on for 5 days.  Everyone was in bliss.  The Sangat came with their Masands.  Everyone was given a Siropa.  Slowly, everyone went back to their homes.  They praised the Guru as they travelled back: “he is so big and strong but very compassionate.  The benevolent Satguru is a great warrior.  He gives great gifts and makes everyone happy.  He is patient and destroys the sinner Turks.  He protects his servants, everywhere.  The ones who remember him in trouble, he assists them.  He carries the bow and arrow to kill the sinners.  He takes the enemy’s arrows.  He is the Peer or Peers and the Meer of Meers.”  They would go back home and praise Guru ji to others.  Guru ji’s amazing ways were seen by all.  It was quite known that he had killed many in the battles.  Badshah Shah Jahan, the master of many lands, he can’t measure up to Guru Sahib, so who else would?  Even Inder bowed to Guru Hargobind Sahib ji’s feet.

After 5 days, Satguru ji was sitting in his court and thought of Painday Khan.  He said: “for what reason has he not come?  He took the beautiful chola and horse but didn’t show his face again.  He is a proud person.  Did he fall of the horse and get hurt?  Is he too embarrassed to come back?”  Guru ji talked about many reasons why he may have not come.  Guru ji called a servant and said: “go and see what the news is.  See how Painday Khan is.  Go to him and call him to me.  Bring him with you.  Find out why he hasn’t come back here.”  The servant left to go get Painday Khan.

The servant went to Painday Khan’s home and met him.  He noticed that Painday Khan was wearing dirty clothes and looked depressed.  He said to him: “listen Khan ji, Guru ji has sent me to take you to him.”  The unfortunate fool was inspired by death.  He got up and left with the servant.  He didn’t change his clothes nor did he wear his weapons.  Destiny made him leave in this way.  He didn’t mount his horse.  He walked on foot with a depressed face.

Painday Khan came to Satguru ji and bowed to his feet.  He sat down in front of Guru ji with a deceptive and upset mind.  He couldn’t look Guru ji in the face, as he was embarrassed.  The omniscient Guru knew everything.  Guru ji asked: “why didn’t you wear the Chola and Cheera I gave you?  You didn’t wear the shield and Khanda either, nor did you come on your new horse.  Why did you come, not obeying my command?  Your clothes are dirty.  Your face is dirty.  You aren’t happy.  You look depressed.  It’s been five days since you received the gifts.  Why aren’t you showing your joy?  What task of yours has spoiled, my dear one?  Tell me the truth.  Lying won’t fix anything.  Speaking the truth will make you breath easy.”  Painday Khan was being led by his fate.  He lied, even in the great radiance of the Guru: “the servant came to call me.  I got up and came as I was.  I didn’t change or anything.  I was sitting down and got up and came.  I didn’t wear the Chola and came to do your Darshan.  No harm has been done in this.  I didn’t wash my hands or face.  That’s why I look lazy.  I remembered you and casually got up to come here.”  Satguru ji said: “the Baaz flew to your village.  It has been hidden.  The Mir Shikaris said the Baaz didn’t go past the village.”  Painday Khan said: “I met the Mir Shikari and tried to locate the Baaz with him.  I had an announcement made in the village.  I had even the women who live in the Pardhaa searched.  Baaz, dogs and Nayees (barbers/hygienists) are of no use when they are full.  This is a known thing.  The Baaz flew far away.  We asked many people but couldn’t find it.  Nobody has hidden the Baaz.  They have lied to you.  Your home is there.  Who is there that would dare lie to you?  The Baaz has gone into some jungle.  The Baaz is white and fast.  It is hard to find.”  Satguru ji then spoke a little sternly to talk some sense into him: “think about it and speak the truth.  Mistakes can be forgiven.  Go home and figure it out.  Find out the truth.  Use your wisdom.  Let go of deception.  If you know the truth in your heart, say it.  You won’t be very guilty then.”  The fool spoke in a deceiving and clever way: “I haven’t seen the Baaz with my eyes.  You are accusing me by listening to someone else.  They didn’t get their way with me.  I have no control over what they say.  Hiding something that belongs to you wouldn’t be a good thing for us.  This is a bad thing.  The bird flew away somewhere else.  The Mir Shikari got scared and isn’t telling you the truth.”  Guru ji wanted to make sure he was lying and so he asked Painday Khan a third time: “try to understand this by using your wisdom: let go of deception.  Speak the truth that you know in your heart.  If you have seen the Baaz, then say it.  You made announcements in the village.  You are a good servant of the Guru’s home.  Think of what is good and don’t become a liar.”  The deceiver, who was ungrateful for eating the Guru’s salt, heard this and got angry.  His face and eyes became red in anger.  He said: “you are accusing me of stealing after listening to the lies of the Mir Shikari.  Why aren’t you thinking about this properly?  You are staining the honour of good people.  You aren’t protecting them.  I am tolerating this because I work for you.  Otherwise, who would be able to speak to me in this way?”  The fool became stubborn.  Death had taken his wisdom from him.  He was filled with sin.  He didn’t think about what he was doing.  He sat there in anger.  Guru ji called Baba Bidhi Chand ji and said to him in his ear: “go to his home.  It’s late afternoon.  Quickly get the Baaz.”

The warrior Baba Bidhi Chand ji bowed to Guru ji’s feet and left quickly, like an arrow.  He reached Chhotay Mir.  He had his face covered with a piece of cloth.  Everyone was in their homes.  Some were sleeping and some were sitting.  He came into Painday Khan’s home without being noticed and began to look around.  There was nobody there.  He then went to the Chabarra, on the top floor, and saw Usmaan Khan sleeping there.  The gifts of Guru ji, along with the Baaz, were all there.  Usmaan Khan had tied up the Baaz.  He was worry-free and sleeping.  He was breathing deeply and didn’t know where he was.  Baba Bidhi Chand ji came into the Chabarra and was happy to see all of the gifts.  He took the Chola off the peg on the wall.  He picked up the Cheera along with the Khanda and shield, that were close to the pillow.  Baba Bidhi Chand ji decided to take everything back along with the Baaz.  He quickly gathered everything and grabbed the Baaz.  He left quickly from the home, without anyone seeing him.  It was the late afternoon.  Baba ji did an amazing task.  Baba ji came back to Kartarpur.

Baba Bidhi Chand ji placed everything somewhere else.  He headed towards Guru ji’s court, empty-handed.  He met Guru ji and spoke in his ear: “with your radiance, I have brought everything back.  The Chola, Cheera, Shield, Khanda and the Baaz, I brought it back and hid it somewhere else.”  He whispered this into Guru ji’s ear.  Nobody else heard this.  Painday Khan was still sitting there.  Guru ji spent the time in some other conversation in the meantime.  He then looked towards Painday Khan and said: “nothing has spoiled yet.  Reconsider giving the Baaz back if you’ve taken it.  If you are greedy for the Baaz, I will give it to you.  Just tell me the truth.  Just once, show me the Baaz.  You can take it after.  I won’t lie, you know this.  Why are you ruining your life?  Speak the truth and enjoy life.”  Painday Khan was unknowing to Guru ji’s greatness.  He was inspirited by his fate.  He said: “Sri Satguru ji, you are lying!  You are accusing me for no reason.  Prabhoo, if you don’t believe me, I swear upon your feet.”  He pointed to Guru ji’s feet and said it 3 times.  He swore upon Guru ji’s feet, falsely.  He was under the influence of his fate.  He forgot Guru ji’s radiance and swore a false oath.  Sri Prabhoo ji was omniscient.  He was omnipotent.  Painday Khan saw Guru ji as a normal human being and swore upon his feet.  He wanted to prove himself right and said: “I haven’t even seen the shadow of your Baaz!”  The Turk was not afraid of Guru ji.  He spoke a false oath.  Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji got really angry.
