8-11 Painday Khan Becomes a Bemukh

Guru ji, knowing that Painday Khan was lying and swearing a false oath, said: “Bidhi Chand!  Bring everything and show him, so he agrees.”  Baba Bidhi Chand ji obeyed and got up right away.  He brought the Baaz, Chola and weapons.  He put everything in the middle of the court.  Everyone saw it all.  Satguru ji got angry and said: “you sinner!  Where did this all come from?  I told you many times not to lie, you fool!  I told you to say the truth.  You didn’t listen to me, you fool!  You kept lying.  You were stubborn and continued lying.”  Painday Khan was embarrassed and didn’t speak.  He lowered his head.  He was worried.  Guru ji said: “why aren’t you speaking?  You are damned for lying in this court.  I treated you like my own son.  You deceived my salt.  What did you do, you fool?”  When Guru ji said this, Painday Khan’s heart was pierced.  He was proved a liar.  He couldn’t tolerate the insult.  He spoke in anger: “you are accusing me falsely.  You must have kept the Baaz in your own home.  You said in the court that someone hid it.  You wanted to accuse me.  You hid it and brought it to the court.  Bidhi Chand orchestrated this whole deception.”  The fool was proven a liar but he did not stop lying.  Seeing his bad wisdom, Guru ji’s eyes went red in anger.  Guru ji still wanted to forgive him and said: “he is foolish.  He is not trying to understand this.  He is trying to prove himself as true.  His bad deeds have come to fruition.  Looks like he won’t live long.  He swore a false oath to the Ghaddi of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji.  You are not deserving to be with me.  You are still lying.  Beat him up with the hilts of your swords and feet.  Kick him out of the court.  Get up warriors!  Grab this coward Turk and kick him out.”  The warriors heard Guru ji’s command and got up.  They swore and started to beat up Painday Khan.  They said: “get out of the Guru’s court.”  Some slapped him and some punched him.  Some hit him with the hilt of the sword.  Someone took his Pugri off.  Everyone pushed him out of the court.  Painday Khan fell down.  He got up and was pushed again.  He was beaten as he was kicked out for swearing a false oath.  Painday Khan was getting beaten but he yelled in ego: “Sri Guru ji!  Whatever you did to me, you will get what you deserved.  I will tell Shah Jahan and get him to send an army here.  When he sends an army, I will grab you with my strength.  I will have you arrested and I will take my revenge.”  Sri Guru ji said: “you can do as you please.  You can use your wisdom and strength.  I am not afraid of your words.  You got what you deserved.  You were unfaithful.  You deceived my salt.  You hid the Baaz and swore a false oath.  I should have arrested you but you are being let go.  Do as you please.”  The warriors got even angrier and grabbed Painday Khan’s throat.  They punched and kick him.  They pushed him out and said: “you fool, you are still talking to Guru ji?  Save your life and go to your home.”  They kicked him out of the boundary of Sri Kartarpur.  The Sikhs came back to the court then.  Painday Khan was beaten up.  He was in pain.  The warriors of Guru ji beat up Painday Khan and came back.

Painday Khan went back to his village.  He cried on the way back.  He was taking deep breaths.  His lips were dry.  His face was depressed.  His hair was messy.  His clothes got ripped.  He thought to himself on the way: “I will take my revenge by fighting the Guru.  I will catch him.  I will pull him by putting a cloth in his neck.  I will make him humble and take my revenge.  Then my life will be a success and I will call myself “Painday Khan.”  I will be worthy of sitting with the Khans then.”  The two that loved each other so much, destiny caused this enmity.  The ones who were each others breaths, now became the enemy of each others breath.  Painday Khan came home, quietly.  Usmaan Khan was panicking and in pain.  He met Painday Khan and said: “who stole the Baaz?!  They took the Chola and the Khanda as well!  Somebody came into the house and stole them!”  Painday Khan heard this and was more upset.  He angrily said: “you ruined my honour.  I was insulted because of you.  I lost my job.  You still couldn’t keep the Baaz?  The Baaz was stolen during the day.  You were sleeping and couldn’t do anything.  The Guru found out and had me beaten.  This is because of you.  I was kicked out by the Sikhs.”  Usmaan Khan said: “don’t worry.  Everyone knows of your strength.  I will have you meet with Shah Jahan.  You will get double from the Badshah, seeing your strength.  We will come with thousands of soldiers to fight the Guru.  We will take revenge.  We will arrest the Guru.  The Badshah will be happy.  They stole the Baaz from me.  I was sleeping, that’s why they took it.  If I would have been awake, I would have killed them all, if others would have come.  I would have cut them with my sword.  A sleeping person is as good as dead.  I can’t do anything about that.  Let’s take revenge.  We will do this in a few days.  Have patience, Khan ji.  Let go of your worry.  Don’t be depressed.  You are so strong.  Who can fight you?  Don’t forget your strength.  Make an effort and kill your enemy.  Take a bath and wear good clothes.  Don’t keep talking about this.  Don’t tell anyone you got beaten up.”  Painday Khan said: “I am not calm.  I felt the punches on my heart.  I was insulted badly.  I didn’t die.  I tolerated the insult on my body.  Till I don’t get my revenge, my life is damned in this world.  I won’t forget today.  I will remember it till I die.”  He spoke and then bathed.  Painday Khan got dressed and came out.  He slowly ate food.  Usmaan Khan sat with him and talked.  Painday Khan was worried.

Painday Khan spent a few days in worry.  The Khans all found out that he was a “Nimak Harami” (ungrateful person who deceived his master’s salt).  The Khans did not like that.  The Pathaans had many villages in the area.  Painday Khan visited them all and said: “the Hindu Guru bothers everyone.  He will slowly take all of your homes from you.  You won’t even know when he does it.  We need to do something about this big enemy.  Let’s gather our power and get together so we can kill the Guru in battle.  If we kill him, the Badshah will be very happy.   He will give us rewards.  When we attack, I will take you to his treasury.  I know where it is.  You will get Lakhs and live with joy.  Why should a Hindu have so much money?  We will fight with an army.  I will kill the Guru.  With a little effort you will get a lot of wealth.  The Badshah will reward you as well.  Understand this well.  Take the effort and praise.”  He said this to all of the people in the villages of the Pathaans.  He won them all over to his side.  They were all greedy for money.  They agreed and said: “make the effort.  We will help you.”  The leader Pathaans were about 500.  The wise ones said: “he is a Nimak Harami.  The one who raised him, he wants to face him.”  He was inflated with ego and thought he could catch the Guru.  He said to Usmaan Khan: “listen son, don’t waste time.  Kutabh Khan is my Chacha’s son.  He is the Sooba of Jalandhar.  He is in the place of Abdul Khan now.  He just got the Sooba.  He lives there now.  Let’s go to my cousin and speak to him.  We will figure out the battle after.  These Pathaans are with me.  Our task will be successful.”  He said this and went to Jalandhar with the 500 Pathaans.

They all came to Jalandhar and camped in a garden.  They met Kutabh Khan with joy.  They sat down and spoke pleasantries.  Painday Khan smiled and said: “listen brother, all of us came to you to take you with us.  You are the highest status among us.  We came to you.”  Kutabh Khan said: “where are you heading?  Where do you want to take me?  What task of yours was spoiled?  You used to stay with the Guru and were happy.  Want happened now?”  Painday Khan responded: “my relation with the Guru has spoiled.  He insulted me in his court.  I can’t tell you how bad I was treated.  He is my enemy now.  I am angry with him.  Listen brother, I wish to meet Shah Jahan.  I know the secrets of Guru Hargobind ji.  I will tell the Badshah.  The Shah has lost 3 times.  I will tell him why he lost.  We will take revenge for the Shah.  I will capture the Guru and bring him to the Shah.  I will do what it takes to get a big army and fight the Guru.  I will kill him or capture him with my strength.  I will be calm then.  Come help me.  I see you as a good brother.  I need this favour from you.  This opportunity won’t come often.  When a person is in trouble, only friends and brothers help.  They are praised for helping.  Helping brothers is like collecting wealth.  When troubles come, the brothers that you have helped will only help you.  You understand politics and warfare.  You know how to speak to the Badshah.  You are wise.  Give us good advice.”  Kutabh Khan heard this and was quiet for a while.  He was a little shocked.  He saw Painday Khan as ungrateful and disloyal, as he was going against the one who raised him.

8-12 Speaking with Kutabh Khan

Painday Khan’s Chacha’s son was Kutabh Khan.  He was wise.  He was a little skeptical and spoke to Painday Khan: “the horse, close and Baaz that you speak about, the Guru gave you those things.  He took them back.  Great beings have natures like this.  They give and sometimes they take back.  Why did he get mad at you?  He was happy with you and gave you expensive things.  He raised you with love.  You were no longer poor because of that.  He took back what he gave you.  Why are you angry?  Why do you want to fight him?  What is the reason to fight?  Your body grew in his hands.  He gave you many joys and pleasures of life.  You want to go against him now.  You are slandering him.  You will be a “Nimak Harami” among the people.  You will go to Hell for this.  When you sit with the Umraavs, you will be talked bad about.  You ate the Guru’s salt.  You are being ungrateful.  This is not good for you.  I think your bad days are before you.  You will see the home of Jumms soon.  What fault did you see in the Guru that you want to kill him on the battlefield?  He is a brave warrior.  He has killed hundreds like you.  You know all this but are being foolish.  I think your destiny is making you do this.  If you wish to live, go to the Guru’s shelter.  Listen to me.  This is the best thing for you.”  Painday Khan was upset hearing this.  Kutabh Khan said the right thing but Painday Khan didn’t like what he heard.  He said to him: “I think the Karah in your stomach is speaking.  You must have gone to see him a few times.  You seem to be going against your religion.  I am determined to kill the Guru or capture him.  I won’t be humble in front of him, nor bow my head to him.  This is your advice?  You are praising the Guru.  I don’t accept your words.  I won’t accept his greatness.  It’s about the honour of my family now.”  Kutabh Khan heard this and smiled.  He said: “this is good what you said.  The whole world knows who has more Karah in their stomach.  The Guru fed you himself.  He gave you Lakhs of money and made you worthy of the world.  Listening to his praises feels like sharp knives in your heart.  Do I have Karah in my stomach or do you?  Hindus and Muslims know that you have been raised in the Guru’s presence.  You are not listening to what is good for you.  You doubt it.  The Guru destroyed the Badshah’s army 3 times.  You want to kill that Guru now?  Keeping this type of thinking, you are ruining your tasks.  You’re not seeing high and low.  You have become egotistical.  Look how low you have become.  You have come to me, begging for help.  You will have to beg in front of the Badshah as well.  You will ask for help that you wish to kill your master.”  Painday Khan heard this and was upset.  It was not what he wanted to hear.  He was ashamed and went quiet.  Kutabh Khan thought to himself: “he came with all of the Pathaans to go to the Badshah.  They all want to go to him.  They didn’t think of good or bad.  They came to my home for help.  I think it is time for their destruction.  How can I go with them?  They don’t know what is good for them.  Why should I say the truth?  I will tell them what they want to hear.”  Painday Khan said: “I thought you were my brother.  I thought you were good.  I came to you with respect but you insulted us.  You let go of your brother’s honour and praised the Guru.”  Kutabh Khan said: “you are right.  Still think about it.  I said this after thinking about honour and religion.  It’s not good to kill the one who fed you.  Where would your honour go?  Where is the religion?”  Painday Khan said: “brother, I won’t leave my honour and religion.  I stayed with the Guru but I followed the religion.  The Guru took the gifts back from me and insulted me.  The Hindus swore at me and kicked me out of the court.  I am the brother of Lakhs.  How can I tolerate this?  My brothers are the rulers.  Till I don’t kill the Guru in battle, my honour will not be restored.  The Badshah is the Guru’s enemy.  He will listen to me.  These 500 Pathaans came with me to you.  Give us support so we can meet the Badshah and get his army.  We will wage war.”  Painday Khan became humble.  Kutabh Khan said: “don’t worry.  Your task will be a success.  I will help you as much as I can.  I will have you meet the Badshah and praise you to him.  All of you should go to Lahore now.  I will come after.  The Badshah will listen to you and give you his army.  Guru ji has caused a lot of damage by killing many Umraavs.  He kept the Badshah’s Baaz and horses.  The Badshah is upset with the Guru.  He will send an army with you.  You will be given the greatness because you will be at the front to fight.”  Painday Khan was happy to hear this.  He praised him: “Kutabh Khan, you are great!  This is what will happen.  You are the highest among us.  You think of your brothers’ honour.  You are the best in every way!  You can do this!”  Painday Khan had Kutabh Khan swear upon the Quran that he will come: “this won’t happen without you.”  Painday Khan made preparations to go to the Badshah.

The 500 Pathaans went with Painday Khan.  Painday Khan spoke to his son-in-law: “it was difficult convincing Kutabh Khan.  We will be successful.”  They all headed to Lahore.  They rested the nights and travelled the days.  They soon reached Lahore.  They saw the big city.  They saw a nice area and set up camp.  They tried to meet the Badshah: “how can we go to the home of the Shah.” They were worried.  They spoke to many officers but the Shah did not get the message.

Bhai Wazir Khan ji found out: “Painday has come to speak to the Badshah about Guru ji.  He has become a Nimak Harami.  He has deceived Guru ji.”  He told the other Umraavs: “don’t take his request to the Badshah.”  Everyone was afraid of Bhai Wazir Khan ji.  Nobody took the request to the Shah.  Painday Khan bribed many officers.  Usmaan Khan made a lot of effort as well.  They tried for a whole month but they failed to meet the Emperor.  They failed.  Painday Khan was upset, along with his son-in-law.  Nothing was going through for them.  Painday Khan was upset and felt like sharp arrows were in his heart.  Everything he did went to waste.  He thought to himself: “how do I go home?  I lost my sustenance.  What will I say to everyone when they come to see me?  It’s better to die.  My eating food is damned now.  People will say that Painday Khan is useless.”  Everyone said: “we should leave now.”  They didn’t eat in peace.  They didn’t sleep in peace.  They tried to speak to the guards but also failed.  They spent all their money on bribes.  They couldn’t buy food anymore.  They were tired after a month.

Kutabh Khan came to Lahore after the month.  Someone told Painday Khan of Kutabh Khan’s arrival: “he has come with his army.  What do you wish to do?”  Painday Khan was happy to hear this.  It was like a dry tree got water.  He was bright like a tree now.  In the evening, they all came to Kutabh Khan’s camp.  They did their Salaam and sat with him with respect.  They told him their problems: “we failed.  We tried many things but we couldn’t meet the Badshah.  Nobody took our request to him.  Nobody respected us or met us.  We met many officers and bribed them.  We went to the Umraavs everyday.  We pleaded but nobody took us to the Shah.  They are all afraid of Wazir Khan.  We were waiting for you.  Otherwise, we would have gone home.  We spent all our money.  It is hard to feed 500 people.  You have to be my ship in this task.  Be my support.  Protect the honour of your brothers.  What will we say?”  Kutabh Khan said: “I know that everyone is afraid of Wazir Khan.  I am afraid of him too.  I can’t say anything.  This is a difficult task.  It was of no use for me to come here either.”  Painday Khan’s hopes and dreams were all shattered.  He was like the canoe, stuck in the middle of the lake.  He said: “you are generous.  Tell us a plan that can work.  I will do what you say.  You know the Badshah.  There must be something you can do.  We will meet him some how.  There is no one else on our side here.  We came here seeing your support.”  Kutabh Khan said: “get a big bamboo and tie a live chicken at the end.  Go near the Badshah’s home.  The chicken will scream and the Shah will hear this.  Do this at night.  The Shah will then call you to him.  Tell him everything.  I will support you.  There is no other way than this.”  Painday Khan was happy to hear this.  He didn’t see this as a degrading thing for him.  He went to his camp and told his supporters.  They were all happy to hear this.

8-13 Sending the Request

When the Pathaans all came back to their camp, they all made an effort and bought a chicken.  It was tied on top of a really long bamboo stick.  They tied a torch to the bottom of the bamboo.  The torch was drenched in oil and lit on fire.  When it was midnight, the 500 Pathaans along with Painday Khan went to the home of the Badshah.  They stood in the market, in front of the palace, and yelled out: “Firyaad!”  They had a request for the Badshah.  They made a lot of noise and passed through the market.  The Shah’s palace was near the shore of the Ravi.  The Badshah was sleeping at that time.  The Pathaans had made their plan during the day and found out where the Badshah was sleeping.  They had arrived near the shore of the Ravi.  The torch was put near the chicken.  The chicken got scared and yelled out loud.  They continuously put the fire near the chicken.  The noise reached the Badshah’s ears.  The chicken got louder.  Everyone kept yelling out “Firyaad!”  They made a lot of noise to wake up the Emperor.  They had other torches lit to make light.  The Begum first woke up and got scared.  She was sleeping next to the Badshah.  The Badshah also woke up.  The Begum said: “who is here at this time in the night?  Who is in pain at this time?  You don’t listen to them during the day, that’s why they are here at night.”  The Badshah said: “I will listen to them in the morning.”  He called the guard and told him: “who are these fools at this time?  Tell them to come in the morning.”

The guard went to the Pathaans and said: “you fools!  You woke up the Emperor.  He will listen to your request in the morning.  Don’t make any noise now.  The Badshah will get angry and send his soldiers to beat you up.”  Painday Khan heard this and was happy that the Badshah heard their request: “the Badshah finally heard us.  We will get justice in the morning.”  They spoke and then went to their camp.

In the morning, Painday Khan went to Kutabh Khan and told him what happened: “your idea worked.  The Emperor will call us.  We need you to give our reference.”  Kutabh Khan said: “I am with you.  Be patient.  I will go to the Badshah and say what I can.  I will help you in your task.”  They all went to the court after their discussion.  Kutabh Khan was the Sooba of Jalandhar and so nobody stopped him.  He had a place in the court.

The court was beautiful.  There was gold on the walls with gold work.  Many types of trees were drawn on the walls with gold.  There were birds painted in the trees.  The whole court was smelling of expensive fragrances.  The smells were calling out to the people and attracting them.  The Badshah sat on his throne.  There were grass pieces on the walls that were wet with water.  This made the room cooler.  There were bouquets of flowers everywhere.  There were garlands of roses, marigolds, jasmines and other flowers hanging on the walls.  The officers came, one by one, to give their Salaam to the Badshah.  The Shehnais played in the background.  The Umraavs all came.  Bhai Wazir Khan ji came as well as Kutabh Khan, who joyfully gave his Salaam.  The Shah spoke after a while: “who was it that came at night?  They lit torches and yelled out their request.  Who deceived them?  Who beat them up?  They woke me up at night.  I couldn’t go back to sleep.  I am still sleepy because of that.  They seem to be in a lot of pain.  They were in the hundreds.  The guard had to tell them to go.”  Kutabh Khan saw his chance.  He folded his hands and said: “it was Painday Khan, the strong one.  He was the servant of Sri Guru Hargobind ji.  Guru ji used some force on him and kicked him out.  He took all his stuff from him.  He has been wandering here for many days to speak to you.  He wasn’t able to get to you.”  When the Badshah heard Guru ji’s name, he looked towards Bhai Wazir Khan ji. Bhai Wazir Khan ji folded his hands and said: “Sire, look at how bad, times are.  I have heard that the in the 13th century of the Hijri calendar, ungrateful sinners will be born.  It is not the 13th century yet.  Those people are already born.  Listen to this Pathaan’s story, I know it well, as I have heard it.  You can decide for yourself.  Painday Khan is an orphan from childhood.  He was wandering around with his uncles.  Nobody was taking care of him.  The compassionate Guru saw him and kept him with him.  He saw the protentional of his wide body and raised him like a son.  He fed him himself.  He loved him a lot.  He stayed close to him.  When he has matured, he is coming to you for a complaint.  He ate the Guru’s salt and got bigger.  He is now a Nimak Harami and coming to do a Firyaad.  These are bad times.  There is no respect for the elders by the young ones.  Sons strike against their fathers; wives want to kill their husbands.  The one who does good for you, they want to harm them.  It is hard to hear and see these kinds of things.”  The Badshah went quiet after this.  The topic changed.  After a while, a task came and Bhai Wazir Khan ji had to go.  The Shah said: “only you can do this.  This is for you.  Nobody else can handle this, but you.”  Bhai Wazir Khan ji had to leave the court after the Shah’s command.

When Bhai Wazir Khan ji left, the haters of Guru ji got happy.  Painday Khan and Usmaan Khan were standing at the door of the court.  The 500 Pathaans sat down in one place.  The guard that met them at night time, saw them.  He said to them: “it was all of you that were making all that noise at night, right?”  Painday Khan got up quickly.  He folded his hands and said: “what did the Badshah say to you at night?  Will he give us justice?  If you remind the Badshah of us, we will give you 500 Rajitpuns as a reward.”  The guard said: “you will get justice.  The Badshah said he will listen to you.  If the Badshah remembers today, he will call you.”  The guard was greedy and went inside the court.  He met Salaabat Khan and said: “the Shah met these people at night.  They have come to make a request.  The Shah told me he would listen to them in the morning.  They are all here, at the door.  Please send my request to the Badshah.”  Salaabat Khan went to Shah Jahan and said with his hands folded: “the people from last night are here.  What is your command?”  The Badshah heard this and thought to himself: “I fought the Guru 3 times.  I will ask this person; how did the few Sikhs of the Guru kill my thousands of soldiers?  This was unbelievable.  I don’t understand this.  I want to understand this.  I will hear everything.  I want to know the secret.”  He gave the command: “call them in.”  The guard was happy to hear this.  He went to Painday Khan and called him in: “come in.  You will get justice.”  Painday Khan was really happy.  He held Usmaan Khan’s hand and walked forward.  He took one or two other Pathaans with him as well.  They went inside the court and stood in front of Salaabat Khan.  Salaabat Khan said: “where is my cut?  Give me money if you want to go ahead, otherwise, your request will be squashed.”  He was given 500 Rajitpuns.  He took Painday Khan to the court of the Badshah.

8-14 Kaalay Khan takes on the Mission

He saw the Shah from a distance and paid his Salaam by leaning forward, humbly.  He went and stood in front of the Badshah, where the court was in session.  The Badshah saw the amazingly huge body of Painday Khan.  His arms were huge.  The Badshah said: “why are you asking for justice?  Who robbed you?  You beat you?  Who can give you so much pain?”  Painday Khan folded his hands and said: “Guru Hargobind ji is my big enemy.  I worked for him.  I killed many in the battle with my strength.  The Guru won battles by my arms.  My arms destroyed your army.  I went through many troubles to fight these battles.  I gave him victory.  He was praised for those victories.  He rewarded me with weapons and clothes.  He now took them away from me.  He had me beaten up by uncivilized Jaats.  He is not afraid of you.  When I said your name to him, he had me beaten up even more.  The soldiers that stay with the Guru, none are as strong as me.”  Kutabh Khan spoke: “this person is famous.  He has done amazing things on the battlefield.  He is skilled in using his sword.  Look at him.  Look how big and strong he is.  There is no one stronger than him.  He knows Shastervidya.  He is the best.  He can save himself if he gets surrounded.  He has killed many.  He his thrown away the strongest of men, with his bare hands.  Nobody can face his arms.”  The Badshah was intrigued.  He laughed and said: “which battles did you fight in?  How did you fight on the side of the Guru?”  Painday Khan told the Badshah that he fought in all 3 battles when the truth was that he had only fought in the first battle: “the army of Mughlas Khan, I destroyed them all.  The battle happened in Amritsar.  I achieved victory there.  I killed them all.  The battle of Rohaila was where Abdul Khan brought his army.  There was a fierce battle there.  No one survived from Abdul Khan’s army.  No one went home alive.  I fought fiercely there.  I gained victory there and was praised.  When your horses were stolen, Lalla Beg and Kumber Beg attacked.  I ripped the whole army apart.  I cut your army down.  I was victorious in 3 battles.  Guru Hargobind ji is not worried anymore.  He insulted me and kicked me out, as he doesn’t need me anymore.  When I worked for him, he gave me a lot of money.  I was under his command.  I was faithful.  I respected him and didn’t say anything if he scolded me.  The Guru is nothing in front of me.  I can break his neck like a cucumber.  I would have made him run away without delay.  I can take his head off like a fruit coming off of a tree.  His strength is nothing in front of me.  People think he is strong and praise his arms for nothing.  Let me tell you the reason why I am here: I need your help to take revenge.  I will take the revenge for you too.  One of your horses died.  The other one is with the Guru.  I will bring the Guru and the horse to you.  I would work for you after, staying with you.  Please give me an army to fight.  I will make a great battle.  I will put a cloth around the Guru’s neck and pull him towards you.  Then I will call myself “Painday Khan.”  Otherwise, I will never show my face again.”  The Badshah heard the false feats of bravery and was happy.  Painday Khan was praising himself falsely.  The Badshah said: “the praise that you did of yourself, I will believe you if you show it to me.  You look very strong.  Your arms are huge.  I see the motivation of battle inside of you.  The army that you wish for, I will give it to you to fight.  Meet with the army and fight.  Go where the Guru is and fight.  You will fight with the Guru.  The Guru’s soldiers won’t be able to come close to you.  My army will stop them.  You will have a duel with the Guru.  Use the full strength of your arm.  If you bring the Guru, you will achieve the status you wish for.  Bring Dilbagh to me.  Do this without delay.  You will get a Siropa.”  Painday Khan said: “I am not egotistical.  I did not lie.  I was with the Guru since I was a child.  I know how strong the Guru is.  I praised the Guru because of my work.  When he wrestled me down, I pretended to fall to make him happy.  I want you to put your hand on my head now.  I will bring the Guru to you now.”  The Shah heard this and gave Painday Khan praise: “I understood what you wanted to say.”  The Shah said to his court: “bring an unsheathed sword and betelnut.  Place it in the middle of the court.  I want a warrior, that has the wish to fight, to get up and attack the Guru alongside Painday Khan.  Kill the Sikhs with bravery.  We fought the Guru 3 times, the Umraavs were all killed by this Pathaan’s strength.  This is the reason why he won all 3 times.  There is nothing to fear now.”  The Shah said this in the court, 3 times.

Mughlas Khan had a brother named Kaalay Khan.  He was the Sooba of Peshawar.  He was strong.  He had an army of 50,000.  He heard this and thought to himself: “my brother was killed in battle.  I can take his revenge now.  I wasn’t able to do it before.  The Khans have slandered me for this.  They look down upon me.  This is my opportunity now.  I will fight the Guru and bring him to the Shah.  The Badshah’s task will be completed and I will be praised for this.  I will avenge my brother’s death.  This will be my task.”  He got up and spoke with his hands folded: “Sire, if it be your command, I will go and fight the Guru’s army.  I will kill them all.  I will bring Guru Hargobind ji alive.  I will bring him to you.  When I do this, the pain of my brother’s death will be gone.  My heart is filled with anger.  I am like a volcano, waiting to erupt on to the Guru.  I will sleep in peace then.  I will kill him or arrest him.”  The Badshah was happy to hear this.  He said: “Kaalay Khan!  This is the best thing for you!  Go with Painday Khan.  Mobilize your army and sound the Nagaras.”  Kaalay Khan was happy to hear this.  He did his Salaam and picked up the unsheathed sword.  He ate the betelnut and said: “I will get the Guru.”  The Badshah called for an expensive Siropa along with expensive clothes.  He called for a Kalgi and Jigha with diamonds and pearls.  He called for golden bracelets with diamonds in them.  He gave all these things to Kaalay Khan.  He also gave him a necklace with pearls.  The gifts were worth 125,000 Rajitpuns.  Kaalay Khan was happy.  The Umraavs saw this.  There was of friend of Abdul Khan sitting in the court named, Khoja Anwar.  He was happy and wished to attack Guru ji.  He owned an army of 2,000.  He got up with hatred in his heart.  He was the head ambassador for the Shah.  He said: “Sire, if it be your command, I wish to go with Painday Khan and fight too.  Abdul Khan was a dear friend of mine.  I wish to avenge his death.  I am indebted with this.  I wish to kill the Guru.  I will support the skilled Kaalay Khan.  I will advise him well.”  He was given a Siropa of 5,000 Rajitpuns.  The Badshah said: “do what it takes to defeat the Guru.  Bring me the Guru.  Destroy his army.”  Painday Khan and his son-in-law were given Siropas and respect.  They were all given leave.  They left with joy and hatred.  When they came back to their camps, they commanded: “play the Dhundhabs!”

8-15 The Army Departs

When the Badshah saw Kutabh Khan sitting with him, he said: “you should go too.  You are wise and a great warrior.  Jalandhar is under you.  Take your army and support Kaalay Khan and Painday Khan.  Take their news and advise them.  Support Painday Khan.  Stay close to them.  You are smart.  Think about how you can bring the Guru.  Take your army and join the forces.  Get together and complete this task.”  Kutabh Khan folded his hands and said: “I am determined that Guru Hargobind ji will be caught.  Since Painday Khan has come here, I have faith now.  The army is huge.  The Guru won’t survive this battle.  I will go and arrest him.  I will join the army.  I will take my regiment as well.”  Shah Jahan was happy to hear this.  He gave him an expensive Siropa.  Kutabh Khan was given leave as well.  He left happily.

Kutabh Khan met Kaalay Khan and got the army ready.  They all got together with Painday Khan.  Painday Khan said: “we will loot the Guru’s treasury.  I know where all the wealth is.  I will show you where everything is kept.  We will arrest the Guru and bring him here.”  The Nagaras all sounded.  The preparations were made in every way.  The soldiers were given weapons, bullets and gunpowder in huge quantities.  Horses were given.  They were also given money to make their morale grow.  The leaders took note of every soldier.  The 5 generals: Kalay Khan, Kutabh Khan, Khoja Anwar, Painday Khan and Usmaan Khan, rode off with the big army.  They all drank alcohol and got drunk.  They began speaking nonsense: “the Guru is nothing in front of us.  If we attack, Iran and other lands will run away from us.  It’s only a matter of time.  We will attack and kill the army.”  Sooba Kaalay Khan, Kutabh Khan, Khoja Anwar; they were motivated by their own deaths.  Painday Khan and Usmaan Khan, including the others, were all egotistical.  The were enjoying the sin.  They were drunk.  Many instruments were played as the army set off.  It was like a swarm of insects going towards the Himalayas to freeze to death.  It was like ants who got wings and were flying towards the birds, to challenge them and to be eaten.  It was like the ocean causing a tsunami and going towards the land.  There was a lot of noise.  A lot of dust flew towards the sky.  The ground was shaking.  It was like the army was going to the land of the Jumms.  Elephants and horses set off.  The soldiers made their horses dance.  Some had Gajgahs tied.  Some had quivers and bows tied to their bodies.  Some held their rifles.  They made their horses run and dance.  They had big spears in their hands.  The spears were sharp.  They shined.  The Khandas, Teghas, Saifs and Sirohis shined.  They all set off from Lahore.

About 80,000 soldiers were headed to Kartarpur to fight.  They set up camp at 45 km from Lahore.  They slept the night.  The attendance was taken as they arrived.  The regiments were divided into smaller companies and recorded.  Everyone was told to be on guard.  They were given whatever they needed.  They were given food and drink at night.  The army went to sleep.

In the morning, the Nagaras sounded.  The warriors got up and got ready.  They saddled their horses and set off.  The elephants were prepared with Zarri tassels.  Kaalay Khan sat on the elephant, as he had the highest rank.  His army was big.  Hundreds of Nagaras sounded.  They yelled as they set off: “we will kill the Guru!”  Kaalay Khan was happy to see the motivation in his army.  They all reached the Beas and called for ferries to cross the river.  The whole army was gathered and crossed over on ferries.  They crossed the river without delay.  The 5 generals were there.  They crossed the Beas.  Kutabh Khan was in the front.  They were headed towards Jalandhar.  They camped in Jalandhar in an open space with trees.  The camps were set up around the city.  It was like the ocean surrounded the city.  The city was like an island in the middle of an ocean.  The soldiers and the horses were all around.  Kaalay Khan took care of the army.  He brought food, drink and gifts.  Everyone ate and slept in Jalandhar.  They spent the night with their regiments and talked.  The Umraavs made strategies.  They got together.  The cowards had fear in their heart, as the Guru had killed the army 3 times.  Kaalay Khan said: “listen Kutabh Khan, you are wise.  The Guru has fought battles before and killed all of the Umraavs with the armies.  We want to make sure that we don’t lose.  You stay close by, so you know the Guru’s secrets.”  Kutabh Khan said: “the Guru is a very strong warrior.  He does not fear anything.  He fights with a solid strategy.  We should attack with the whole army.  We should attack fiercely.  I don’t know any other secret.  I have never met the Guru.  If he has some powers, then there is nothing we can do.”  Painday Khan said: “why are you being superstitious?  I will capture the Guru.  Watch me!  The powers you speak about, you are the real masters of the land.”  Kaalay Khan said: “still, we need to make a strategy.  Don’t underestimate the enemy.  If you understand the Guru’s way, we can defeat him easier.  If you go without any knowledge, you will lose.  We need a strategy.  Otherwise, we will lose.  We need to know how many soldiers, forts, money, friends and supports the Guru has.  We need to know all of this.  We will then compare everything and then attack.  The strongest enemy should be dealt with first.  This is the wisest thing.  Let go of your ego.  Think about this and fight properly.  Send Anwar Khan Khoja to speak to the Guru.  He shouldn’t tell the Guru that he is here to fight.  He should test the Guru’s words and notice the Guru’s army.  When he comes back, we will fight.  The Khandas and swords will be cut.”  Khoja Anwar heard this and praised the senior’s words.  He said: “this is a great idea!  We will know everything, once I speak to the Guru.”  They planned in this way.  Kaalay Khan and the others inspired Khoja Anwar to go to Kartarpur.
