7-56 Kalu Nath of Nathana
Shah Jahan listened to Bhai Wazir Khan ji and was at peace. He let go of his enmity. Peace came into his heart. He never had a conflict with Guru ji again. He thought to himself: “what I sent my army for, Gulbagh was killed along with the whole army. The body is just filled with air. The horse would have died if it was with me as well. This battle cost me a lot. Nothing was gained. Wise people don’t do things like this. What was the point of losing a whole army over a hawk?” The Badshah thought about this and other things. He let go of his enmity with Sri Guru ji.
In Gurusar, (Maraaj was established later on), Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji had his Dhera for 8 more days there. There was a beautiful Damdama made there, where Divaan would happen. The Sangat of Jungle would come to do his Darshan. They were in bliss to do his Darshan. They brought many gifts for him. They came and brought milk and other foods. They heard about many people dying and wanted to see the place. They were amazed at the number of people dying. They heard of the over 30,000 people dying and did Simran of Guru ji. They praised the Guru. They said to each other: “there is no other warrior like Guru ji. Nobody else could have fought the Badshah. Guru ji defeated him. He fought without a fort or a mountain. The master of the land had Lakhs of soldiers. Who else could have done this other than Guru ji? He killed many Turks on the battlefield. The Turkanis are screaming and yelling for their family members. They are crying and mourning for their men, sons and brothers. They are pulling their hair and beating their heads. Their tears are not stopping. The praise of the Guru is spreading to many lands like the moonlight of the full moon. If the Badshah keeps fighting the Guru, the Turks will all die. Their rule will end. Guru Hargobind ji is the Karta Purakh, the Parmeshwar. He is omnipotent, all-powerful and omniscient. He gives wealth to his servants. He will give the kingdom to his Sikhs. The ones that will be his enemies, will die.”
Guru ji still had Dilbagh, who was renamed as Jaan Bhai. Guru ji had renamed Gulbagh as Suhaila, who died on the battlefield. Jaan Bhai was upset at the passing of Suhaila. The omniscient Guru sensed this. Guru ji came to Jaan Bhai and communicated wisdom to him: “this body is meant to be destroyed. Why are you attached to it? We are all destined to separate from each other one day. It is certain. Understand this without a doubt. The one that is without form, colour; the “Chetan Satta” consciousness existence is in all. That is forever. It is without beginning and end. That is the “Aatma.” That is the real “You.” Human, animal, bird or snake; they will not last forever. Nothing with form will last. Understand your “Real Self.” That will never die. This pain from the separation will go if you understand your “Real Self.” Guru ji rubbed his hand on Jaan Bhai’s back, face and his body with love. As soon as Guru ji touched Jaan Bhai, he became an Aatam Gyani. He received Brahmgyaan. The doubt was all gone. He realised who he really was. Jaan Bhai began to eat and drink again. His mourning was gone. He was attached to the Simran of the Brahm. He served Guru ji from that day onwards. Guru ji rode him for leisure. He could read Guru ji’s mind and knew where Guru ji wanted to go.
While in his court, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji said: “this place is my “Ranthunba,” the place where my warriors fought. It will be named Gurusar. Many Sikhs will come to bathe here. Whoever bathes here, there sins will be washed away. Whoever comes with faith, their wishes will be fulfilled. They will receive Gursikhi.” Guru ji said the praise of the place. Bhai Jodh Rai ji and Bhai Salaim Shah ji said: “Maharaj, let’s go to Kangar. Please come to our place now. Let’s not delay. We came here to fight a battle. That is done now. You have been victorious. It has been 8 days since the battle. The enemy was dealt with. They are not coming now. Shah Jahan has understood your praise. He knows not to be in conflict with you. His mind is at peace now. He no longer holds enmity. That’s why he didn’t send another army. He would have sent many thousands by now. We would have been fighting right now. He would have lost more men. He made the right decision to not send more men. We would have killed them with your power and compassion.” Both bothers were filled with faith. Guru ji was happy with them. He said: “I will go to your village. I will stay there for a few days and then go forward.” Guru ji and the army got ready. They headed towards Kangar in the morning.
In the morning, the Nagaras sounded the beat for departure. The soldiers saddled their horses and got ready. Jaan Bhai was saddled. Guru ji got on top of him. The saddle was made of gold with gems. Other jewellery was put on Jaan Bhai. He was decorated nicely. Sri Guru ji wore his clothes and weapons. He put his jewellery on. He went to the horse and mounted him. He headed towards Kangar. The Nishans were unfurled. The Nagaras sounded.
There was a village near Kangar named Nithana; where a person named Kalu Nath lived. Guru ji sent a Sikh to him to inform him of Guru ji’s arrival. Kalu Nath ji wished to see Guru ji. Guru ji said: “test him and tell him I am coming. Tell him I will see him from my Dhera. It will be close to his village.” The Sikh went ahead to meet Kalu Nath ji. The Sikh thought to himself: “how should I test him? I want him to give me milk from a white cow. I want to get warm milk. It’s cold right now. Then I will believe that he has powers.” The Sikh came close to Nithana. He came to Kalu Nath’s Dhera and bowed to Kalu Nath ji. He sat down. Baba Kalu Nath ji knew what the Sikh wanted. He said: “welcome. How is the Guru? I heard that the Turks came and Guru ji killed them.” While he spoke, he milked his white cow. He did it in front of the Sikh. He warmed up the milk, as the Sikh wanted. He gave the milk to the Sikh. The Sikh was satisfied that the Nath was real. He felt good drinking the warm milk. He thought to himself: “Kalu Nath is a Bhagat.” The Sikh told Baba Kalu Nath ji that Guru ji will arrive there soon. When Kalu Nath found this out, he went outside his village and bowed.
Guru ji reached the village. There were 3,000 men with him. The Nagaras were sounding. The horses were riding. Bhai Jodh Rai ji and his men were there. The soldiers were happy from the victory. The men shouted Jaikaras as they came. The dust flew towards the sky as everyone rode. The sunlight was blocked by the dust. Guru ji saw a nice place with a nice pond and ordered to camp there. There were a lot of men. They were all divided within their regiments. They took the saddles off the horses and made the horses walk around to dry the perspiration. The horses were neighing. The people came to see Guru ji. The army made food and ate. The warriors rested near Nithana. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji ate food and rested during the afternoon. He woke up at around 4 pm and got ready. Beautiful rugs were laid out. Muslin tarps were laid out for the Divaan. The canopies had zarri with pearls. A nice throne was laid. A round pillow was placed on the throne. Strands of pearls were hanging from both sides. A canopy was set. Guru ji sat on his throne. The Sikhs waived Chaurs over his head. The Rababis sang Raag Keertan. They sang Shabads of peacefulness. The Gurbani gave peace to all. Bhai Jodh Shah ji, Baba Bidhi Chand ji and the warriors were all sitting in the Divaan. They all bowed to Guru ji and sat in the court. Guru ji was in the middle. He was like Inder between the Devatas; like Shiva between the Devatas. The Sangat came and brought many gifts. The people talked: “our Satguru ji came after winning a war.” The people had faith. They came to Guru ji with eagerness. They said: “Guru ji you are Dhan!”
Baba Kalu Nath ji heard of the Divaan and came to see Guru ji. He brought two pots of milk. He had a young student pick up one pot on his head. Baba Kalu Nath ji picked the other pot up. He came and bowed to Guru ji. He sat down with his hands folded. Guru ji blessed him with his sight and spoke with love: “you have applied a lot of effort. That’s why people follow you in this area. They call you “Kalu Nath,” for this reason. (Nath means master).” Baba Kalu Nath ji said: “please don’t consider me a Nath. I bow to the dogs of your home. You are the Nath.” Guru ji was happy and said: “you will be known in the world. Everyone will call you the Nath. The Guru is happy with you. Your Guru is happy with you.” Baba Kalu Nath ji said: “it is by your compassion that everything happens. I am not deserving of this glory. I am a dog of your home.” Guru ji saw his humility and blessed him more. He gave him many boons: “you are the Nath of Naths. My Sangat will praise you too. Your effort has been recognized.” As he became humbler, Guru ji blessed him even more. This is the way of great beings. As Guru ji said all this, he gave him more blessings. Baba Kalu Nath ji bowed his head. His student brought the pot of milk. Guru ji saw the young boy and blessed him. He took a fistful of milk from the pot and said to the young boy: “drink this quickly!” The boy drank the milk. As soon as he drank the milk, all of the powers came to him. He received the gift of sights and could see what was happening in every country. He could see the universe. He bowed to Guru ji and said: “Dhan Guru Hargobind Sahib ji! You give powers to all. In an instant, you gave me so much power. No one is equal to you.” Baba Kalu Nath ji knew what happened. He said to his student: “what can you see? You can see everything? You see the Guru in front of you. Where is his other form? Is he sitting, standing or moving?” The student said: “listen Nath ji: his second form is in Arab. A Muslim Fakir is doing his Bhagti. He was remembering him with love. He is in Mecca and wanted to see the one who is on the throne of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. He had love in his heart and wanted Guru ji to come to him. He wanted to be blessed by the Guru. He has faith that the Guru is omnipotent. Guru ji is standing under a tree right now, holding on to a branch. The Muslim Fakir has faith. Guru ji came to him without delay.” Baba Kalu Nath ji heard this and was amazed of how much power his student had received without doing any effort. The student was stronger than him now. He thought to himself: “he was too young still. He got this power too soon. He knows what is happening in the whole world. Guru ji blessed him.” Baba Kalu Nath ji put his hand on his student’s head and pulled his power out. It was like sucking water with a straw. He then asked him again: “what do you see now?” The student said: “I can’t see anything now.” Guru ji was watching this and thought to himself: “I gave the child this power but his Guru didn’t leave it with him. He hadn’t done any effort. He didn’t do Sangat. Let’s test them.” Baba Kalu Nath ji had a pot from a foreign land. It was beautiful. Satguru ji tested him and said: “Nath ji, give me this pot. It is beautiful.” The Nath said: “I like this pot. I keep it close. I can’t give this to you. I can’t leave it while I am alive. I am yours and so is the pot. What’s the difference if it stays with me? Please leave this with me.” Guru ji saw his attachment and thought: “I wanted to make him the Nath of Naths but he his still attached to his pot. I will pull the power from the Nath.” Guru ji said: “I gave the power to the child but you took it away from him. I was going to make you the Nath of Naths but that will be no more. You will be as you were before. You saw your disciple become stronger than you and took his power. This will not stay with you either.” As soon as Guru ji said this, the power was drained from the Nath. Kalu Nath was the same as before. He regrated this. He bowed and went back to his Dhera.
While Kalu Nath had humility, he received many powers. The Guru’s Maya was too strong for him. He was put in doubt and didn’t understand it. This is how the Katha was. His place is still there. There was another Kalu named Dheevar Kalu. This is not his Katha. This is the one from Nithana village. The Guru’s Katha carries on. Listen on ahead with attention oh listeners.
7-57 Entering Kangar
Sri Satguru ji got up from the Divaan in the evening and came to his tent. He sat on his bed with bliss. He ate food and then went to sleep. At Amritvela, he got up and bathed. He did his daily cleansing routine and got ready. He mounted his horse and rode off. Bhai Jodh Shah ji and other Sikhs had their horses saddled. They all rode off behind Guru ji as the Nagaras sounded. The Nishans were unfurled. They all headed to Kangar. They hunted on the way. Guru ji conversed with Bhai Jodh Shah ji and enjoyed himself.
Guru ji and the Sikhs camped outside of Kangar Village. Guru ji’s bed was laid out as soon as he got off his horse. Guru ji sat on his bed and said: “Jodh Shah, go to your home and meet your family. Rest and come the next day to the Divaan. You have been away from your family for a while. Go and see them.” Bhai Jodh Shah ji obeyed and went to his home. He met his wife. She saw the wounds on her warrior husband’s body. She noticed that her husband fought in the fierce battle and the Guru protected him. Seeing her husband alive she was really happy and thanked the Guru. She said to her husband: “how was it being with Guru ji?” Bhai Jodh Shah ji said: “there is no other like the Guru. He is omnipotent. The whole world worships him. He can do whatever he wants. The Devatas and Daynts bow to him. He is the most powerful. I was fortunate to have met him. He fought a battle and was victorious. He killed many Turks. He killed them all. Who else would have fought such a big army? The Turks were too many. We were only a handful. They were in the tens of thousands. The Sikhs killed all of the Turks. Guru ji did things that cannot be described.” The wife of Bhai Jodh Shah ji heard this and was really happy. She wanted to see Guru ji. She took gifts and went to see Guru ji.
The wife of Bhai Jodh Shahi ji went to see Guru ji. She bowed with faith and devotion. She was the daughter of a great Sikh. Guru ji blessed her: “may you remain a married woman forever. May you receive joy in every dimension. May your Sikhi remain deep and may you remain in the company of Gursikhs. Guru Nanak Dev ji will fulfill your wishes. You will never face troubles or pain.” She saw that Guru ji was happy with her husband. She was really happy to see Guru ji. She said: “Prabhoo ji, we are your servants. You are our master and protector. You give greatness to your servants. This is your nature. You are omnipotent. You are the cause and the effect. You can do whatever you wish. May we always think of your feet. May we never forget you.” She bowed and then came back home on her palanquin. She was the queen of Kangar. She had many servants. She had sent food for the Sikhs and feed for the horses. Many types of food were made in the Langar. The horses received green grass and other grains. Satguru ji praised the food that was sent by the queen. Guru ji drank water and washed his hands. He then went to sleep.
Guru ji woke up at Amritvela and did his morning cleansing routines. He then sat in Samadhi and connected to the Parmatma inside of him. When the sun came out, he opened his eyes and got ready. He wore his clothes, swords, shield and Kalgi Jigha. He came to the Divaan area and sat on the throne. The people of Deena Kangar found out about Guru ji’s arrival and came to meet Guru ji. Some brought food and some brought gifts. Milk and yoghurt were brought. Chaurs were being waived over Guru ji’s head, like flying swans. Thousands of people came to do Darshan of Guru ji. Guru ji was like the moon of Kathak within the stars. Who would be so rock-hearted that would not melt seeing Guru ji’s awesome form? Thousands stood with their hands folded.
Bhai Sadhoo ji and Bhai Roopa ji came to the Divaan. They placed their gifts and grabbed Guru ji’s feet. They all asked how each other was doing. They spoke with love. Seeing the Sikhs as his beloved, Guru ji had them sit with respect. Bhai Sadhoo ji said: “Prabhoo ji, people are foolish. They think you are human. You are the Dev of Devatas. You are Parmeshwar. The Badshah is a false king. They want to compare themselves to you. When you pick of the sword, the Devatas and Daynts run away. The Mughals are nothing in front of you. You can blow the earth away with your breath.” Guru Hargobind Sahib ji said: “the horse Suhaila that Bhai Bidhi Chand brought; he got injured while fighting Lalla Beg. He died.” Bhai Jodh Shah ji was seated near by. He folded his hands and said: “he was with you on the battlefield. Your feet touched him as he died. He has gone to Sach Khand and received the highest status. He was blessed to be serving you when he died. He was so blessed. There is no one more blessed than he.” Baba Bidhi Chand ji said: “he died in battle but the other horse was depressed. When you touched him, he was in peace. I know the horses well. They have been together since birth. If someone else had these horses, the other would have died too. They were really close.” Bhai Jatti Malik ji said: “these horses were amazing. They were meant for you. You gave one of them Mukti. You are great.” There were discussions of the battle amongst the Sikhs. They talked how the Turks fought. They all talked about the war and were amazed how the battle happened. 4,000 Sikhs faced 35,000 Turks. Guru ji stayed in Kangar for 3 days and 3 nights.
On the fourth day, the Nagara sounded. Guru ji said: “let’s go hunting.” The Sikhs all went hunting with Guru ji. Bhai Jodh Shah ji and the other warriors went. The hunting dogs and hawks were taken. Guru ji went many miles and then camped at a nice place. He got off his horse and stood on the ground of the jungle. Some Sikhs came and stood near Guru ji. Bhai Jodh Rai ji conversed with Guru ji. As they stood, a huge python came out. It was really big. It opened its huge mouth and came out of the jungle. It seemed like it was in pain. It was moving in pain. It came to Guru ji, slowly, moving from side to side. It wanted to die. The warrior Sikhs ran to attack the python but Guru ji yelled out: “don’t stop it! Don’t kill it! It wants to come to me! Let it come! Watch from afar. Move back! Don’t hit it!” The warriors all stood to watch this amazing event. Guru ji stood as his horse was held by a servant. Everyone watched as the python came close to Guru ji’s feet. The python placed its head near Guru ji’s feet. Guru ji took his right foot out of his shoe and touched the python’s head with his toe. As soon as Guru ji’s toe touched the python’s head, all of the sins of the python were washed away. Its head split all the way down his body. The python died. Thousands of insects and worms came out of its body. The insects were eating the python from the inside, that’s why he was in pain. He couldn’t do anything about it. Everyone was watching and were amazed. Baba Bidhi Chand ji, Bhai Jodh Rai ji and other Sikhs were amazed to see this. They folded their hands and asked about the python: “he died as soon as your foot touched him. This was surprising that he came straight to you. He knew you. So many insects came out of him. Who was he? Why was he in pain?” Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji told everyone the python’s history: “he was a great Mahant in his last birth. He had become a Guru. People from every direction came to bow to him. Everyone followed him. Many gifts came to him. All of the insects that came out of his body were his disciples. He wanted to have many disciples for his personal glorification. He had become very egotistical and said: “there is no one else like me.” The whole country worshiped him. They all came to bow to him and worship his feet. He did not do the Simran of the Karta Purakh nor did you do any good deeds. He never gave his disciples wisdom or make them do Simran of Akaal Purakh. He died a proud man and then came into this life form. His disciples became insects and ate him from the inside. They had given him many gifts and food and did not receive Mukti. They were taking their revenge now. He was a weak Guru. He did not get Mukti nor could he give it to his followers. He did not do any good deeds either. He was concerned with his own praise. He didn’t do anything good. The ones who see such a person and still don’t do Simran, Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji has uttered a Shabad for them:
Salok M:1..
They, who give their disciples glorifying hats are fools; they who receive them are shameless..
The fat mouse cannot enter its hole with a basket tied around its waist..
Those who give blessings shall die one day; those that receive the blessings shall also die one day..
Nanak, no one knows the command; no one knows where they go or immerge into..
(SGGS 1286)
They can’t do good for themselves nor do they meet the Guru for Gyan. They have ego in their hearts that makes them blind towards the Simran of the Prabhoo. He made many followers in greed of having his Pooja done. This is what happens to such people. They take births in these kind of life forms. This python was fortunate that he came to the shelter of the Guru. He has received the good status and freed from the life of a python.”
7-58 Dhera in Kangar Village
The Dhera was set up in Kangar. About 3,000 Sikhs were there. The camps were set up over a distance. Many horses were tied up with ropes. Guru ji was sitting on a bed. The Divaan was in session. There were rugs laid out for people to sit on. Guru ji was discussing Dharma, politics and Gyaan. He was enjoying himself speaking to the Sikhs. The Langris prepared the area to cook Langar. They cleaned the area by digging the soil. As they dug, they found many bones. They were human remains. The Langri came to tell Guru ji about the bones: “the jungle is dense. We are finding human remains in the ground. We don’t know why and how there are so many bones here. There are a lot of bones buried together.” Satguru ji got up to see. Baba Bidhi Chand ji and other Sikhs went with Guru ji to see the bones.
Bhai Jodh Rai ji and the other Sikhs were amazed at the number of bones. Guru ji stood there and looked over them. Guru ji had them dig further. There were more bones that came out. Among the bones, there was one skeleton that was fully intact. The others were just bones. The fully intact skeleton had no bone separated. Everyone asked: “Guru ji, you know everything. What is the reason all these bones are here? One of them is a full skeleton.” Guru ji said: “a long time ago, there was a great drought here. It hadn’t rained for many years. The earth went dry. No crops or plants grew as a result. There was a great famine for miles from here. Animals and humans were in pain from the hunger. People began to wander for food. They left their homes, looking for food. They tried to find food but failed. The skeleton you see that was intact, he was a great being. He was a Bhagat and had powers. He could do as he wished. If he wanted, he could have produced kitchens for the 6 types of tastes. He could have prepared rotis and rice with his powers along with many delicacies. He could have fed the whole world. He could do as he wish but instead, he accepted the will of Prabhoo. He didn’t show his powers. He was in pain from hunger as well, like others. He had to leave his home as well, looking for food. He had his belongings in a basket. He lifted the basket on his head and wandered for food like the others from his village. There were many in his group. They were anxious from hunger. Their bodies became weak. They began to shrivel up. They lost their energy. They finally got tired and fell here. Their lips were dry and couldn’t speak anymore. They laid down here for many days and nights. One night, many of them died. The ones that survived dug this mass grave and buried the dead. They couldn’t cremate them and so they just buried them. Theses bones have been here since then. The skeleton belongs to the saint who accepted the will of Akaal Purakh. He died but didn’t show his powers. He was a great being. He tolerated the power he had. He let his body go and didn’t use his power. He found peace in Akaal Purakh’s will. Such people are deserving of worship. The whole world worships such people. They are with great patience.” Guru ji then went back to the Divaan and sat down.
Everyone was amazed to hear the ancient Katha of the famine. The Langri prepared Langar. They dug in another place to make their stoves. They brought food for Guru ji. The whole Sangat ate. Guru ji stayed one night there. Guru ji mounted his horse the next day and came inside Kangar. Bhai Jodh Rai ji served Guru ji with devotion. He was in bliss serving him. He had many conversations about life with Guru ji.
Bhai Jodh Rai ji folded his hands and said: “oh compassionate one, please bless my home by setting foot in it. Make my house pure. I am your servant. Stay there and eat food. Then you can go where you wish, after. This is my wish. Please fulfill it. You are omnipotent. You have all the powers.” Guru ji accepted the plea.
The Gareeb Nivaaj went to Bhai Jodh Rai ji’s home. A beautiful bed was placed inside the home. Both husband and wife served Guru ji. They had him sit on the seat. They washed Guru ji’s feet and hands. The woman washed Guru ji’s feet. They drank the water from Guru ji’s feet. The Queen of Kangar was very happy. They couple put the Amrit on their head and sprinkled it in their house. Their faith grew deeper. Many delicacies were made for Guru ji. The couple brought the food for Guru ji. They didn’t make the servants do it. They placed the plate in front of Guru ji. They held a handkerchief as Guru ji ate. They said: “Guru ji, eat this! This is delicious!” They gave Guru ji the food. Many types of food were brought for Guru ji. They said: “this is salty. This is sweet. Please have this.” They poured the food with devotion. They slowly poured more food and said: “please have more of this. This is a delicacy from our area. This is delicious.” They brought new dishes for Guru ji. They were trying to make Guru ji happy. Guru ji was satiated and then drank water. The woman brought water for Guru ji. The master drank the water and gargled. He was happy seeing the love and devotion of the couple. He was going to give them a boon. The couple placed their heads on Guru ji’s feet. They didn’t lift their heads. Guru ji said: “you will receive Gurmat. You are devout Sikhs. Your heart will be filled with the Guru’s wisdom. I will be with you in Sach Khand. I will help you in your afterlife. Practice Bhagti and Gyaan. Do the Simran of Satnam with your heart. Live in the will of the Prabhoo with joy. Let go of your pride and ego in regards to the attachment of your body. See this world as a myth; an illusion. You see your body as yours; this is the doubt. Ego is stuck in the heart for no reason. When your ego is gone, you will see your true self; which is the Aatma. It will come shining through. It is self-pervading. Nothing illuminates it. It is self-illuminating. It has no beginning and will be forever. It is the Sat (infinite), Chetan (conscious) and Anand (bliss) form. This is your real self! It is the same as Akaal Purakh. It is never born, nor does it ever die. Only the body takes birth and dies. It is not old nor young. It does not decrease. It is the finest thing. It is forever in one state. It is greater than great. It meets with the vehicle of the Antiskaran (Chit, Bhuddi, Man, Ahankaar) and begins to do tasks. It joins with the Indriyas (senses) and becomes the Jeev. The mind, powered by the Aatma, covers the Aatma, like darkness covering a room, where one cannot see the Aatma then, because of pride in the mind. It then becomes a part of joy and sorrow; thereby going through births and deaths, over and over again. It has taken on countless bodies. It has gone through the 8,400,000 plus life forms and wandered. There are thousands of Yugas ahead for it. It will take on more bodies and go through pleasure and pain. This is the story of the Jeev. It will face the Jumms, over and over again. It’s like a water wheel that keeps filling with water and then emptying it. The bodies did not last forever. The body did not stay in one place. It never lasted forever. For this reason, this is a big problem. Let go of this! One should make a great effort in getting out of this. The great beings make the great effort. Only the Simran of Satnam should be done. Otherwise, one will remain stuck in the net of Jumms. Without the Satguru, the Naam is not received. Serving the Guru makes one blessed and joyful.” Bhai Jodh Rai ji heard Guru ji and folded his hands. He said: “see me us as your servant. For the sake of your name, please illuminate the wisdom inside of us. I will make preparations in the morning to go with you. Your Darshan gives me bliss. Take me with you.” Guru ji was happy. He looked at him with loving eyes. He looked at the couple and said: “live in Kangar. Do the Simran of the Guru in your heart. Do the Simran of Satnam. You will be blessed in both worlds. When I call for you after a few days, come meet me with joy. Where my Dhera will be, you will be called.” The wife of Bhai Jodh Shah ji said with her hands folded: “you should come back to our area as well. Come back to us.” Guru Hargobind Sahib ji then said: “I won’t come back in this form. I will come in a different incarnation. I will come see your descendants and stay at their home. They will serve me. I will stay there with them. As your family grows, you will be in joy. You did a lot of work for me. I will take care of you in this world and in the next. Enjoy your kingdom and rule in peace and joy.” Guru ji blessed them with the joy of both worlds. The couple was happy and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. Guru ji blessed them and got up.
Guru ji came to his tent and slept. He got up at Amritvela. He did his daily cleansing routines and got ready. He wore his clothes and weapons. The giver of joy mounted his horse.
7-59 Fotuhi Kisaan
As Satguru ji got ready to leave, Bhai Sadhoo ji and Bhai Roopa ji, both came and bowed to Guru ji’s feet with love. They said to Guru ji: “what command is there for us? Please tell us. We desire your Darshan, like the lotus wishes to see the sun. You blessed us by giving us greatness. You are our protector in every dimension. There is no one more compassionate than you. You can make a grain of sand into the Sumer Mountain.” Guru ji said: “continue with preparing and distributing Langar. Give Langar to everyone. Your boons and curses will come true as soon as you say them. Your words will be like a sharp sword. Hold Divaans of Satsangat. Do the Simran of Satnam. I will come back to you in another form. (Guru Gobind Singh ji will come here) Your children and grandchildren will serve me. The Guru will be by your side.” Bhai Jodh Shah and the whole village went to see Guru ji off. They all bowed to Guru ji’s lotus feet. Guru ji rode off at the sound of the Nagara. Bhai Jodh Shah ji, Bhai Sadhoo ji and Bhai Roopa ji went to the village limits. The Naqeebs announced Guru ji as the Nagaras sounded. They all walked 3 km. Guru ji then stopped and said: “you should go back now. I respect your love.” Bhai Jodh Rai ji got off his horse and grabbed Guru ji’s feet. He put his head on his feet and began to shed tears. He said: “please remember me. I am yours. Call me to your service quickly. I don’t wish to separate from you. It is your command, so I am not going with you. Your company is the highest. Your feet hold bliss.” Satguru ji said: “you are connected to me. Your heart is connected to mine. The Guru will be with you in this life and in the afterlife. My descendent will be served by your descendants. He will bless them as well. You will be with the Guru’s home forever. You will be in peace all the time. The troubles and obstacles will be destroyed. There will be no pain in your life.” Guru ji sent everyone back but Bhai Jodh Rai ji held Guru ji’s feet. Guru ji pulled away and left. Bhai Jodh Rai ji kept staring into the direction that Guru ji travelled for a very long time. His heart had the love for the Guru. He did the Simran of Guru ji’s form in his heart. He praised Guru ji to his villagers and friends: “there is no other Gareeb Nivaaj like Satguru ji. He gives peace to his Sikhs and kills the sinners.” Bhai Sadhoo ji and Bhai Roop Chand ji bowed to Guru ji. They left after Guru ji commanded them to. They both did Simran of Guru ji. They never forgot Guru ji even for a second. These Gursikhs could not be fully praised. The Sikhs were all shedding tears. They slowly went back. Many other Sikhs were given hope. Guru ji told everyone to love the Guru Shabad. The Nagaras sounded. Dust flew as the horses rode off. Everyone bowed as the army left. There were 3,000 soldiers.
After a few kilometres, Guru ji set up camp. He hunted the area to make it pure. Slowly, Guru ji went through many villages. Many came to see Sri Bhagwant ji. They brought food and gifts for Guru ji. They bowed to Guru ji’s feet. Guru ji continued to travel through the area and reached Gujjarwal. A nice place was seen and camp was set. The soldiers tied their horses. Rugs were laid out for a Divaan. Guru ji sat on a bed and the Sangat began to come. The villagers found out and brought food and gifts. People would say: “Ganga has come to our home!” They came with joy to see Guru ji. Many people became new Sikhs when they met Guru ji. Other Sikhs came as well. There was always a crowd. People came to do Ardaas as they brought food, yoghurt, milk and money. Clothes, horses and weapons were brought as well.
There was a Chaudhary Kisaan that lived in Gujjarwal. He found out that Guru Bhagwan ji had come with his soldiers. He was happy to hear this. He came to see Guru ji at around 4pm. Many other people came with him. He brought many gifts for Guru ji from his home. He came with joy. He wore a sword and shield as well. He liked to hunt. He kept a hawk Baaz with him. He brought some hunting dogs with him. He wanted to see Guru ji before going hunting. Then he was going to eat at night. His name was Fotuhi. He mounted his horse and came to see Guru ji. He had a few mounted men with him. As he came close to Guru ji’s camp, he got off his horse. He took the gifts and brought them to Guru ji. He bowed to Guru ji’s feet and placed the gifts there. He then sat down near Guru ji. Many other soldiers were with him that sat down. When he saw Guru ji, he was surprised to see Guru ji’s lion-like body. He had never seen such a big and wide person before. He started to talk about the battles that Guru ji had fought. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji spoke more about the battles. Guru Hargobind Sahib ji asked how the Chaudhary was doing. Guru ji saw the Baaz on his hand and said: “tell me about this Baaz. Have you trained it? How does it hunt? Did you buy it? Where did it come from? How long have you had it? You like to hunt. Tell him how you hunt? What is your strategy?” The Kisaan said: “listen Maharaj, this Baaz is from a foreign land. It is well-trained. It is beautiful. It can kill other big birds. I have kept him for hunting. I raised it with joy. I take care of it well. I feed it meat myself. I keep it with me all the time. It hunts with strategy. As soon as I let it go, it hunts many birds. It has all of the skills a hawk does. I can’t praise it enough. I keep it close. I love this Baaz.” Guru ji heard this and decided to test the Kisaan. Guru ji said: “the favourite things should be given to the Guru. When you give your favourite things to the Guru, you get rewarded very well. For this reason, give this Baaz to me. I will hunt with this hawk. I will see his skill, how it kills other birds. I want to see it fly.” When Fotuhi heard this, he said: “Sri Prabhoo ji, I won’t be able to give you this Baaz. I love it too much. It is unique. I can’t part with it. There is no other Baaz like this. You have no shortage of anything. I only have this one Baaz. I love this and have kept it.” Guru ji noticed that the person didn’t have such a big heart. Guru ji laughed and said: “what is made for the Guru, comes to the Guru by itself. You didn’t give it so you have earned the opposite of praise. By giving it, you would have been praised. It will come to me anyway.” The fool Fotuhi didn’t understand anything. He bowed and got up. He left Guru ji’s Divaan. He was upset that the meeting didn’t go well. He didn’t go hunting and went straight home.
When Fotuhi came home, he put his Baaz on its stand. He sat on his bed and thought to himself: “should I have given the Baaz? I couldn’t have given it. It’s too good of a Baaz. It was my mistake to take the Baaz with me when I went to see the Guru. I won’t make that mistake again. I won’t show this Baaz to anyone again.” He kept staring at the Baaz and thinking. There was a small silk rope near the Baaz. The Baaz ate the rope. Fotuhi ran and tried to take the small rope out of its mouth but he was too late. The rope was swallowed by the Baaz. The Baaz began to suffer. It began to roll around. Fotuhi tried to take the rope out but couldn’t. He thought the Baaz was going to die. He thought of Guru ji’s words and said to himself: “if I would have given the Baaz to the Guru, I would have earned praises. My Baaz is about to die now. I will go to him and give him the Baaz. I will earn the fruit of obeying now. It’s going to die now anyways. Let me fix my wrong as I didn’t obey the Guru. I sinned. I should have given the Baaz to him. One should not disobey Gurus. This is the reason why the Baaz is dying.” He got on top of his horse and took the Baaz to Guru ji. He went alone.
Fotuhi came to Guru ji, running. He was ashamed and depressed. He bowed and placed the Baaz in front of Guru ji. He said: “Maharaj, this is yours now. Please take him and save him. I disobeyed you and so I am being punished. Please forgive me, oh compassionate one. I am a small human, full of mistakes. You are great and forgiving.” Satguru ji smiled and said: “what happened?” Fotuhi said: “I went home and the Baaz ate a silk rope. It is going to die. I understood my mistake. I brought it for you, Prabhoo. If you can save it, please save it. It’s going to die.” Guru ji picked the Baaz on his hand and said to the Baaz: “why did you eat the rope? Throw it out now! Just as you took it in, throw it out. Use force to take it out.” As soon as Guru ji said that, the Baaz threw up the rope. The rope was in front of Guru ji. Guru ji, Fotuhi and the Sikhs saw this. Fotuhi was amazed. He folded his hands and said: “Sri Satguru ji, you are omnipotent. You have all of the powers. You are the master. You can kill or give life. You can do anything with your words. I made a big mistake. Please forgive me. This is your Baaz now.” The Chaudhary bowed and went back to his home.
7-60 Arriving in Sri Kartarpur
Sri Satguru ji gave the Baaz to the Mir Shikari. Guru ji ate and resting the night with peace. Satguru ji woke at Amritvela and did his morning cleansing routines. As the darkness went away, Guru ji got ready. He wore his clothes and weapons. He called for his horse. It was Jaan Bhai that came. Guru ji loved this horse. It was the one that was known as Dilbagh at one time. Guru ji mounted the horse and the Nagaras sounded. The whole army came into attention. The soldiers mounted their horses and set off.
Guru ji hunted along the way. Guru ji let the Baaz go, to hunt. It hunted the other birds. The new Baaz was really good, it killed many birds. Guru ji travelled slowly. He hunted and saw the drama of the world. He reached the shores of Sutlej. The ferrymen were called to bring their canoes. Many canoes and ferries came to take the whole army across. The ferries made many rounds. The horses and the luggage were all taken across. Guru ji entered the Doaba area from Malva. When the army went across the river, there was a lot of noise. The ferrymen took the horses across along with the soldiers. It took some while to go across the river. Sri Guru ji was taken in a special ferry. It was new and colourful. It was clean. It was kept for the Badshah. To make Guru ji happy, the ferryman brought this ferry for Guru ji. He brought the ferry and folded his hands. He said to Guru ji: “Maharaj, all of the army has crossed. I have brought this special ferry for you. The whole day, the army had been crossing. It’s your time to go now. The big Sutlej should be crossed in this ferry.” Guru ji heard the request and got up. He sat in the ferry and sailed across the river. The ferryman made Guru ji happy. Guru ji gave the ferrymen a lot of money. He gave them 500 Rajitpuns. The ferrymen were really happy with this. Everyone came across to the Doaba side. The whole army was camped there. Guru ji ate and rested the night.
At Amritvela Guru ji bathed and got ready. He wore his clothes and weapons. He mounted his horse. Guru ji’s praises was pure, like the Ganga. He travelled the whole way and arrived in Kartarpur. This was where Gangsar was. Guru Arjan Dev ji had come here at one time. Guru Hargobind Sahib ji’s whole family was already there. They had been waiting for Guru ji for a long time. Mata Nanaki ji, Mata Mahadevi ji, Baba Gurditta ji and others were all there. Everyone was happy. The Nagaras was heard from afar. The people of the village heard the Nagaras and knew that Guru ji was coming. They were very happy to hear this. It was as though the peacocks heard the clouds and began to dance. People started to run around to advise others of Guru ji’s arrival. They said: “Satguru ji has arrived!” They began to celebrate. The whole village found out. They all left their work and went to receive Guru ji. They wanted to see Guru ji. The people went like the subjects going to see their king. Sri Baba Gurditta ji and Baba Sooraj Mal ji mounted their horses to receive Guru ji. Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji called for his horse and mounted it as well. Others came along with them. The soldiers in Kartarpur came. People took sweets and food for Guru ji. Some took Prashaad. They came about a mile ahead to meet Guru ji. They all bowed to Guru Hargobind Sahib ji’s feet. Everyone was happy to see Guru ji. Guru ji asked Baba Gurditta ji how he was and continued to move towards the village. Many standing in the streets showered Guru ji with flowers. They bowed and presented gifts with joy. Guru ji spoke to everyone with love. He moved with great grandeur. The army was behind him. Guru ji met with the Sangat, going on ahead on his horse. He entered the streets of Kartarpur. The Sikhs brought gifts with love. It was as though the moon had risen in the village. Women and men stood on their balconies to shower flowers. They all bowed. They put flower garlands around his neck. They all did his Aarti, over and over again. They were in awe towards him. They heard about the battles with the Turks. Guru ji spoke to everyone with respect. The master moved slowly with joy. He gave joy to the people of Kartarpur.
Guru ji, the destroyer of sinners, then reached his home. He first went to the room where Guru Granth Sahib ji was. He presented Prashaad and bowed his head to Guru Granth Sahib ji. He listened to 5 Shabads while sitting there. The people of Kartarpur sat with Guru ji. They were all very happy. They folded their hands and asked about the battles: “we are glad you are well, Prabhoo ji.” Baba Bidhi Chand ji said: “Guru ji killed the whole army of the Turks. They came like insects but Guru Nanak Dev ji blessed us all. We didn’t see them as anything big. We killed them all. Guru ji was victorious. The whole world found out. They now know not to fight Guru ji. Nobody could stay in front of Guru ji. Everyone was amazed how he killed the whole army. The Badshah got scared as well. He’s afraid of losing his throne now. Guru ji’s tremors went to Kabul and Balak Bukhara. Guru ji created chaos for the Badshah. He lost against Guru ji. The 22 Soobas are afraid of Guru ji now. Nobody wants to fight Guru ji anymore. In every direction, they are all afraid of Guru ji. The tyrants are scared now. Their pride has crumbled. They are all watching themselves carefully. They want to save themselves from Guru ji. Some want to run.” The people heard this and were happy. The people heard this and said: “there is no other like Guru ji in this world. Devatas and Daynts worship his feet. He sits on Guru Nanak Dev ji’s throne. He is worshiped. Everyone bows to him. They all lost to him.” It was then evening and Guru ji got up. The people went back to their homes as Guru ji gave them leave.
Guru ji went to his family in the home. Mata Mahadevi Marwahi ji and Mata Nanaki ji were really happy. They bowed to Guru ji’s feet and saw Guru ji’s radiant form. The servants brought Sri Guru Har Rai ji to meet Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. Baba Dheermal ji was walking. Both grandsons touched Guru Hargobind Sahib ji’s feet. Both daughters-in-law, Mata Natti ji and Mata Khem Kaur ji, came and bowed to Guru ji. Guru ji went to his room and sat on his bed. He took Guru Har Rai ji in his lap and played with him. Baba Dheermal ji sat on the bed and watched. Baba Gurditta ji sat on the floor with his eyes turned towards Guru ji’s feet. Baba Sooraj Mal ji was sitting along with Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji. Guru ji gave his sons his blessings. He touched their heads with his hands. Guru ji loved Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji a lot. Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib ji was always in the single state, connected to his Aatma. Baba Ani Rai ji sat in front of Guru ji with his hands folded. Guru ji casted his divine vision on all. He was happy to be with them all. The servants and maids stood with their hands folded. Guru ji looked towards them with love as well. They were his family as well. The Sikhs were his children. Guru ji sat for about an hour with his family.
Guru ji looked towards Sri Baba Gurditta ji and spoke to him with sweet words: “call the Masands inside. Prepare food and camp for the army. The horses need to be fed. They all need to rest. Give them what they need with patience. Give them good food.” Baba Sooraj Mal ji and Baba Ani Rai ji came outside. Baba Dheermal ji and Guru Har Rai ji came out as well. Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji bowed and went to the stables. He went to where Jaan Bhai was tied. Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji was happy to see the horse. He noticed how nice the horse was. Guru Tegh Bahadhur ji was really tall. He put his hand on the back of the horse. The horse was like it was made by an artist. The rest of the family came to see the horse as well.
There was a celebration in Kartarpur. Everyone was happy. Deep Malas were done. Lamps were lit. Every house lit Ghee Divas. Everyone was happy, like the people of Ayodhya were happy after Raavan was killed. They were happy as though Ram Chander ji came back home.
7-61 Kartarpur Darbar
When Painday Khan ji heard of Guru ji’s arrival, he got ready and went to see Guru ji. He met Baba Bidhi Chand ji and gave him his Salaam. He asked Baba Bidhi Chand ji of where Guru Sahib was. Baba Bidhi Chand ji responded: “he is in his home right now.” Painday Khan ji said: “how was the battle?” Baba Bidhi Chand ji said: “it was a fierce battle. They were 34,000 in numbers. They were mounted and came to attack at midnight. They started firing their guns. The Satguru’s army faced them ahead. The Turks began to fight amongst themselves as it was really dark. The Turks couldn’t do anything to the Sikhs. The Turks were tired and hungry. About 25,000 died at night, killing each other, unknowingly. In the morning Guru ji came to battle on his horse. He fought Kabil Beg, who was really strong. He hurt Guru ji on the knee. It was not deep. He tried killing Guru ji but Guru ji cut him with one strike. Lalla Beg came with his regiment. Bhai Jetha ji killed many Turks. He was surrounded by thousands of Turks and attained martyrdom. Guru ji fought Lalla Beg and killed him. Guru ji’s and Lalla Beg’s horses both died. Guru ji killed Lalla Beg’s army. Guru ji won in this way. Bhai Jatti Malik ji and other Sikhs fought a great war.” Painday Khan was upset hearing this. He said: “well, what can I say? If I would have gone, he could have seen what I would have done. I wouldn’t have let Guru ji go to war. I would have made him rest and killed Lalla Beg. I wouldn’t have let the horse or Bhai Jetha ji die. I didn’t get called to war. The whole world knows of my strength. Lahore and Delhi are scared of my name. The enemy doesn’t stay in front of me. I would have shot arrows and killed the Turks. I would have cut them to pieces. I would have destroyed them in front of Guru ji. I wouldn’t have let them come close. Bhai Jetha ji wouldn’t have died if I was there.” Baba Bidhi Chand ji heard this and said: “what you say is true but Guru ji’s wishes are not known by many. Only he knows why you weren’t called.” Painday Khan ji met the other Sikhs. He met Bhai Jatti Malik ji and asked how they were. He sat with all of them and then ate. Everyone went to sleep at night. Everyone did Simran and went to sleep.
Guru ji woke up at Amritvela and did his daily cleansing routines. He then sat in Samadhi. Asa Vaar was sung in Raags. Sikhs did their Nitnem. The Nagaras and Dhundhabs were played with the Napheeryas. The Shabads were being sung. Gurbani was Amrit, being showered on top of the Sikhs. Everyone was in bliss. Everyone did Simran of Satnam. It was soon morning and the sun lit up the day. The Naqeebs sang the praises of Guru ji: “the Sacha Paatshaah assists all on earth and in the afterlife. The Guru is like the moon in the ocean of the Sodhis. He is the complete host of the Degh and Tegh. He is the strongest and widest. He kills enemies on the battlefield and becomes victorious. He wears the Peeree and the Meeree swords. His arms are thick and heavy. He is the protector in both worlds. He gives joy to his servants. He killed Mugalas Khan on the battlefield. He killed his father’s enemy, Chandoo. He killed Abdul Khan along with his sons and brothers. He killed the powerful Kabil Beg. He destroyed Lalla Beg and his whole army. His praises have spread in the four directions and brought fear into the hearts of the Rajas. The kings hear about his radiance and want to run away, leaving their stuff behind. Lahore and Delhi have lost their honor and hid in fear. Only on some days do their doors open. Shah Jahan has backed down from fighting out of fear. Nobody can face the Guru. His radiance is too great for them. He is omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent. The Devatas and the Daynts bow their heads onto the Guru’s feet.” The Naqeebs sang the praises of Guru Hargobind Sahib ji in this way. This would happen in the morning as Guru ji would make his way to the Divaan. The conches would be blown all around the city during this time. Guru ji dressed in his clothes and wore his weapons. He came out of his home. Colourful rugs were laid out for the Sangat to sit. Guru ji came and first bowed to the Throne of Guru Nanak Dev ji. He then sat on the beautiful throne. Chaurs were waived over his head like two swans flying. The soldiers and the Masands came into the court. The people of the city came to see Guru ji. The Sikhs did the Darshan of Guru ji; like the lotus seeing the sun. They were all eager to see him.
Painday Khan ji came into the court, wearing a shield and sword. He bowed to Guru ji. Guru ji asked how he was. Painday Khan ji said: “Maharaj. You have blessed me with joy. Everyone is well in my home. I heard about the battle of Gurusar. Why did you not call me? I feel that I am useless. I was of no use to you.” Satguru ji heard him and gave him hope: “there will be another battle. You will be of use there. Blood will mix into the dust.” Painday Khan ji did not speak after that. Guru ji was like the moon amongst the stars in the Sangat. The Sikhs heard about Guru ji’s arrival and began to come from nearby villages. They came, bringing many gifts. They bowed and did his Darshan. Their wishes were being fulfilled. Guru ji casted his divine blessing vision on all. Just as the winter moon gives joy to the Chakors, that is how Guru ji was.
The story of Baba Bidhi Chand ji bringing the horses was said in the Sangat. The Sangat was amazed to hear this. They went to see the horse, Jaan Bhai. They were amazed to see the strong horse. They said: “Bhai Bidhi Chand ji did an amazing task of bringing the horse. It was certainly meant to be with Guru ji.”
The four sons of Guru ji were all being praised. They were all in Kartarpur. It was like the 4 Vedas were sitting with Brahma. The Divaan went till 10 am. The wishes of the Sangat were fulfilled. Everyone was in bliss. The Karah Prashaad came. Ardaas happened and the Prashaad was distributed. Guru ji got up with his 4 sons. He went to his home and sat on his bed. Mata Nanaki ji and Mata Marwahi ji came to serve Guru ji food. The maids were sent away. Delicious food was made by the mothers and brought for Guru ji. The plate was placed on a Sandalwood stool. The plate and cups were made of gold. Six types of tastes were present in the food. Guru ji was satiated. He drank water and washed his hands. The 4 sons then ate after Guru ji. The mothers took Guru ji’s plate and ate Guru ji’s leftover food known as “Seet Prashaad.” Guru ji then laid on his bed to take a nap.
The 7th Raas has been completed now. The 8th Raas will begin. I, Kavi Santokh Singh, bow to the Guru and think of him in my heart to write this Katha. Kartarpur is near the Beas. The Sodhi Avatar Satguru was sitting there. Guru ji carried on the day and then slept that night.
Everyday at Amritvela, he awoke and bathed. Satguru ji went into Samadhi within his blissful form. He would connect to his real self.
Whoever listens to this Katha with full attention, they will receive the gift of Gursikhi and Naam. The one who recites Bani with love and focus, Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji will be by their side. The Raas is now complete, of this portion of the Katha. The praise of the Satguru has illuminated. Kavi Santokh Singh has stated this and is a sacrifice unto the Guru, over and over again.
Thus ends the 7th Raas.
