7-51 Kasam Beg Dies
Lalla Beg was very upset, as his dear brother, Kumber Beg, was killed. He began to shed tears, thinking of his beloved brother. He thought of his brother’s virtues and said: “this was a shocking thing. Who would have thought that this would have happened to us? It was next to impossible to defeat my army. It was like picking up a mounting on the hand. The Guru destroyed the whole army. Many great warriors came with me from Lahore, the ones that were the gems of the Badshah’s court. They had won many battles in the past and were paid by the Shah. They knew a lot of battle strategies. They came and gave their lives. How did they all die? The Guru had few men to fight with. I don’t understand what fate this was. How did all those warriors die with wounds? How will I fight now? I don’t know what to do. My younger brother, Kumber Beg, was very wise. He would advise me of all the fighting strategies. My brother! Where did you go? I don’t remember how to fight anymore.” Kasam Beg and Shamash Beg heard their father and said to him with swords in their hands: “this does not suit you. You should not lose courage like this. The morale of the army will be gone. When we left the Badshah’s court, we picked up the sword and the stack betelnut. We swore that we would kill the Guru or arrest him. Many Umraavs and generals saw us do this. We were given a Siropa and a lot of respect. The Badshah praised you himself. The Badshah had made us Soobas; he has a lot of wealth; he gave us soldiers, elephants and horses; he gave us money for the expenses; we came to get that Badshah’s horses. We should die for him. He sent you with a lot of soldiers. We should not betray him, after eating his salt. We should fight and die for him. Let’s go and attack Sri Guru Hargobind ji. We shouldn’t lose hope that our men have died. We should fight with our weapons. We will either kill the Guru or get killed. We will take back the Shah’s horses. When we take the horses back, the Badshah will reward us well. Our pain will be gone. Don’t be depressed. Our honor is only sustained if we fight, die or kill.” Lalla Beg heard this and thought to himself: “they are right. My sons speak the truth. There is nothing else for us to do. We can either die or kill the Guru. There is no better task than this.” Lalla Beg wiped his eyes with his sleeve. He was ready to fight the Guru’s army. He took off his bow from his shoulder. Kasam Beg, the elder son, saw this and said: “stay at the back and apply force. We will go on ahead and fight. Pat our backs and give us your blessing.” Lalla Beg stayed at the back. The two sons charged ahead.
The Nagaras sounded to raise morale. The Begs made their horses dance. They were drenched with Bir Ras. They didn’t care that they had less men. Real warriors don’t care about quantity. They charged ahead. They released sharp arrows. They aimed for the chests and shot their arrows. They went where the Sikhs were in great numbers. Bullets were fired, arrows were released. Kasam Beg and Shamash Beg attacked. Shamash Beg yelled and charged. The Sikhs held them up. It was a fierce battle. Both sides pushed hard. They all had anger in their hearts. The Turks had 500 men and wanted to avenge their uncle and cousin being killed. They wanted to avenge their loss. They caused chaos. Both sides fought hard. They fired their rifles with force. They fired again and again. They shot 2 bullets at a time. They filled gunpowder, aimed and fired. They fired many times. The fire spewed from the barrels. The small flames could be seen in great numbers. Popping noises were heard. The bullets showered and hit the warriors. They swayed and fell to the ground. The horses fell, making the earth shake. The warriors fought for their masters. Jaikaras were yelled. The warriors were going to heaven. The fairies came from heaven to watch the battle with joy. They rubbed saffron and oil into their hair. They would marry the soldiers who would die. They boarded them into their beautiful vessels. They married them and danced in joy. They would meet the warriors with joy.
The battle was fierce. The men pushed their foreheads forward. The swords shined. The shields were moving up and down. The limbs were being cut and thrown around. The warriors jumped as they fought. The bowstrings were pulled. The arrows flew. The arrows passed through the chests. There were yells of pain. The blood flowed from the bodies. The Begs caused chaos. Baba Bidhi Chand ji saw this and came into Bir Ras. He said to Guru ji: “Prabhoo ji! Command me to go and fight. I want to use my weapons and kill them!” Guru ji said: “take Bhai Jatti Malik ji, the great Brahmin, with you. Kill them all. There are only a few left now. Save yourselves and killed them.” Baba Bidhi Chand Cheena ji heard the Guru’s words and took the Pandit Brahmin of the Sodhis with him. He saw his as Dronacharya. They both attacked like hungry hawks. Guru ji had kept them back before but now they got permission to fight. They were drenched with Bir Ras. They attacked like lions coming out of their caves. They fought the enemy and released many arrows. They ripped the enemy apart. Bhai Jetha ji joined them and attacked. The 3 warriors went with Guru ji’s permission. They caused chaos on the field. They all killed many men. The Turks couldn’t take this charge. They showed their backs and ran away. They couldn’t take this charge. Kassam Beg came close to Baba Bidhi Chand ji. His bow was fierce. He had sharp arrows. A strong Sikh named Bhai Lakhoo ji was fighting. He had an iron Saang. When Guru ji would fight, he would stand with Guru ji and hold a Saang. Guru ji would use his Saang when needed. Bhai Lakhoo ji got angry and rode his horse fast. He had a heavy Saang in his head. When Kasam Beg saw Bhai Lakhoo ji come, he swung his sword at him. Bhai Lakhoo ji took the strike on his Khanda. His Khanda broke in two. This made Bhai Lakhoo ji very angry. He came into Bir Ras. He took his Saang and struck it hard. The Saang went right through Kasam Beg’s chest. Bhai Lakhoo ji spun his Saang around, pulling Kassam Beg’s organs out. He threw Kassam Beg to the ground. Guru ji saw this and yelled out a Jaikara. He said: “Lakhoo, of Hayhra, killed the enemy!” Guru ji yelled out in joy: “it is the Judgment Day for the Turks now!” Bhai Nand Sanghera ji was fighting on the battlefield. Bhai Muhroo Randhawa ji killed many warriors. Bhai Kripal Jalloo ji was a great warrior. They all killed many Turks and made them run away, far. They caused chaos on the battlefield. It was a fierce battle. The Turks ran away. They won the field.
7-52 Bhai Jetha and Shamash Beg Die
Bhai Jodh Rai ji was a great battle strategist. He was a wise warrior. He caused chaos within the enemy ranks. His younger brother Bhai Salaim Shah ji was a great warrior as well. He destroyed the enemy formations as well. He killed many Turks. Lalla Beg saw his eldest son die and understood that his army was in grave danger. Lalla Beg got really angry but he knew he couldn’t win. He only had 100 men left. They were great warriors. This was his best regiment that he would sit and drink with. These were his closest men who would laugh and joke with them. They were the strongest warriors and experts and Shastervidya. He drank alcohol with these men and gave them a lot of jewellery. They were Mughals and Pathaans. They were fair with red cheeks. They ate a goat each, everyday. They ate a lot of meat. They were wide and tall. Their heads were huge. They wore expensive clothes. Lalla Beg kept these 100 men close to him. They charged to avenge Kasam Beg’s death. They took their bows and charged hard. Their horses were strong. They had raised their horses themselves. They were brave and strong. They made their horses run fast. Lalla Beg led the charge and came into the centre of the field, where the body of his son was. He had a sharp sword in his hand. They all released arrows and fired bullets. They were angry for losing. The Guru’s warriors were pushed back. The bullets fired and the arrows were flying. The swords clashed. The battle was fierce. The warriors fell. Lalla Beg saw his dead son and began to cry. He stood there for a while. His heart was in pain.
Bhai Jetha ji came. He had strong arms. He rode his horse fast and released arrows. He stood where Lalla Beg was. He roared amongst the Turks and killed many. He wanted to kill Lalla Beg. He pulled his sword out and rode his horse. He came near Lalla Beg and swung his sword on to his head. The strike hit the chainmail. Lalla Beg got angry and swung his sword. The sword hit Bhai Jetha ji’s horse. The horse got wounded and began to bleed. He fought with bravery. The Turks surrounded Bhai Jetha ji and struck him with their swords and bullets. His beard was white. He was more the 65 years old. The Turks struck their swords with anger. The brave Sikh kept fighting. He struck a Mughal on the shoulder and chopped it off. The Mughal fell off his horse. Bhai Jetha ji was going to swing a second time. The Mughal Pathaans surrounded him again, like stars surrounding the moon. Bhai Jetha ji was roaring and blocking the strikes. He moved around and kept killing the enemy. A Mughal named Ali Beg struck his spear and hit Bhai Jetha ji on his left. It went through the other end like a snake coming out of its burrows. Bhai Jetha ji ignored it and killed Ali Beg with his sword. Bhai Jetha ji killed his killer before dying. The Mughals struck more. Bhai Jetha ji killed some more and then fell to the ground saying “Vahiguru.” He went to Guru Nanak Dev ji in Sach Khand. Lalla Beg was amazed to see the senior Sikh fight with such strength. Bhai Jetha Ji became a Shaheed. The Sikhs killed many to pieces. Bhai Jetha ji was cut to pieces. The Mughals were surprised to see how fearless the Sikhs were. Many Turks were killed. Lalla Beg thought to himself: “if only we could surround the Guru, that would be great. We would arrest him. If he would fight, we will kill him.” Bhai Jetha ji went to Sach Khand.
Bhai Jatti Malik ji was in Bir Ras. He went to fight Shamash Beg. He released arrows at the Turks. He killed many. His bowstring resonated as he released the arrows. He emptied many quivers. The shields made noises. Rivers of blood flowed. Many died under the horses. Many fought, many ran away. The swords were drenched in blood. The battle was fierce. Bhai Jatti Malik ji swung his sword at Shamash Beg. Shamash Beg blocked the strike with his shield. Shamash Beg rode backwards. He ran towards Bhai Jatti Malik ji and swung his sword. Bhai Jatti Malik ji was a great warrior. He put his shield ahead and blocked it. He saved his body. Bhai Jatti Malik ji got angry. He fearlessly made his horse fight with his opponents. The horse hit his head and shocked Shamash Beg’s horse. His head-butt hit Shamash Beg ji the thigh. He tried blocking it but failed. Bhai Jatti Malik ji swung his sword and cut Shamash Beg’s head off like a ripe fruit from a branch. His head rolled onto the ground. The body was still on the horse. It eventually fell but the feet were stuck in the stirrups. His dead body was dragged on the ground. His horse got scared and ran faster. The body was being dragged. The on-lookers got scared. The body was scaring the Turks. Where Lalla Beg was, that’s where the horse came. Lalla Beg recognized the horse and noticed that it was his son’s body on the horse. It was like Lalla Beg died while standing. He had no will to fight anymore. The Mughal recognized the horse. They wondered where the head was. They said: “the body remains. Where is the head? This is what happens to warriors in the end. Their limbs get cut.” Lalla Beg heard this and said: “my family is gone. I didn’t think this would have happened to me. It looks like angels are fighting with me. They are not humans. These are the angels that bring Judgement Day do earth. I was proud of my great army. I thought the Guru had few men and my army would kill them quick.” He began to regret his action and cried. He knew his death was near. He was no longer happy.
7-53 Lalla Beg Dies
When Lala Beg was crying, Gul Khan, a Pathaan saw him crying and came to him. He spoke to him with wisdom: “Lalla Beg! Don’t be upset. You are wise. This is the great time of the battle. Victory or loss, only one can win. Warriors should only fight. That’s the best thing. If a warrior leaves the battle, that’s a bad thing. He loses glory and honor in both worlds. You are very wise. Who can lecture you? Understand the situation and do the right thing. The way that the creator has created the world, whatever he wishes, that is what happens. Everyone has to take it on their heads. Nobody can return it. Crying will solve nothing. Nothing can be changed. Go ahead and fight! This battle was started by you. Everyone will praise you instead of slandering you. Honor your glory. Don’t destroy it.” Lalla Beg heard Gul Khan and let go of his depression. He made his mind patient and became eager to fight. He wanted to fight Guru ji now. Faiz Khan was close to him. He said to Lalla Beg: “listen to me. Till you are alive, we will either arrest the Guru or kill him with our weapons. We will show the Badshah our victorious selves. Otherwise, we will die on the battlefield.” Lalla Beg agreed. He was ready to charge. The Nagaras were sounded. He had charged twice before and was ready for another.
Lalla Beg charged. There was a lot of noise. He knew this was the end. He didn’t know if anyone was going to survive from his army. His men made the horses charge hard. The men had sharp weapons and fired their guns. Some had bows and released arrows. Some had spears and some had Saangs. They met the enemy and caused chaos. “Don’t let the enemy go! Catch them or kill them!” The Sikhs were waiting for the charge. The enemy didn’t run away. The Sikhs wanted to kill them. They all clashed against each other. The bullets were fired. Both sides fought hard. They hit each other with spears. The arrows were sharp and pierced the bodies. The blood flowed. The emotions were high. The enemy came to fight. The Sikhs fought hard as well. The noise could be heard from afar. Bullets and arrows flew. Many died. Guru ji was in the battlefield. He was in joy. He had his strong bow and released many arrows. He said to Bhai Jodh Rai ji: “you have fought a lot. Stay here and watch the men fight. You fought all night long. You fought the enemy. You killed many. The bullets are flying. Fight in defence. We have won.” Bhai Jodh Rai ji obeyed and stayed there. He had been fighting for 9 hours. He had a few wounds on his body. He made his horse run a lot.
Baba Bidhi Chand ji wanted to fight. He wanted to kill the enemy. He thought to himself: “I want to go into the centre and kill them all. I want to finish this battle.” Guru ji told him not to go: “you are tried. You have wounds. I will fight now with Lalla Beg. Watch this fight. We will fight with a sword and a shield. He is the greatest warrior. I won’t leave anyone behind.” Both Sikhs folded their hands and said with humility: “who can face you? There is no Devata or Daint that can defeat you. Humans are nothing. You are the master of the Trilok. You can destroy the Trilok. You can create everything again. Only fools doubt this.” The Sikhs said this to Guru ji.
The enemy charged ahead. The spears, Saangs, arrows and rifles were used. They wounded each other. Many warriors fell. It was a fierce charge. No one ran back. Guru ji knew Lalla Beg’s end was near. He released many arrows and killed 5 at a time. It when through them. Lalla Beg saw Guru ji and got what he wished for. He wanted to fight with Guru Hargobind Sahib ji: “now I will fight the Guru.” He took his men and came to Guru ji. Guru ji released many arrows. Whoever was hit, died. Rivers of blood flowed. Suhaila was injured, under Guru ji. It was hit with an arrow. Guru ji saw this and got angry. He released the Khapra arrows. He pulled them to his ears before releasing them. Guru ji’s arrow flew towards Lalla Beg. It flew like a flying cobra. It hit Lalla Beg’s horse in the forehead. The horse was strong but died. It was expensive and clever. The arrow came out of its back. The arrow was drenched in blood. It landed into the ground. The saddle was golden. Lalla Beg jumped off his horse as it fell to the ground. Lalla Beg released arrows towards Suhaila. He released many arrows to kill Suhaila. It was hit in the chest and the forehead. Suhaila died and fell to the ground. This horse was really fortunate to have become a martyr, while having Guru Hargobind Sahib ji as its rider. He died in the service of Guru ji. He went to Sach Khand. He was taken out of the cycle of birth and death.
Baba Bidhi Chand ji quickly said to Guru ji: “Prabhoo ji, take my horse or another one.” Guru ji thought of the fight of Dharma and said: “no! My opponent has no horse.” He fought on foot. Lalla Beg advanced. Guru ji said: “I will fight on foot. I will fight with a sword and shield.” Guru ji came towards Lalla Beg. His eyes were red. His eyebrows were arched. Another Pathaan came with anger. Lalla Beg said: “nobody will come between me and the Guru. Go and fight somewhere else! I will kill the Guru to avenge my family. I will die or kill him. Nothing else. I will take the horses or give my life. Watch the fight. Go fight someone else.” Guru ji told the Sikhs to move back as well. The two had a fight. They came close and moved back sometimes. Both were great warriors. They were the generals of their armies. They were both being praised. They both wanted to win. They were the masters of their own armies. They were drenched in Bir Ras. They were well-skilled in Shastervidya. They were both undefeated. They both lost their horses. Both were ready to fight like two lions. Both were like two elephants with big tusks. They both had shields. They both had swords. They were both angry. Lalla Beg jumped and swung his sword. Guru ji blocked the strike with his shield and said: “strike again! I don’t want you to miss your chance.” Lalla Beg saw Guru ji’s bravery. He came close and jumped. He swung his sword high. Guru ji fearlessly put his shield forward. Guru ji swung his own sword. Lalla Beg moved back. Guru ji said: “stand their you coward. It’s my turn now!” Lalla Beg heard this and stood there with patience. He stood like a cobra standing straight up. He struck many times. Guru ji blocked them all. Guru ji’s shield was very heavy in his left hand. He had a Faulaad sword in his right hand. Guru ji faked a strike towards the knee. Lalla Beg took his shield downwards. Guru ji quickly took his sword towards the ear. The sharp sword went through Lalla Beg’s neck, like a wire passing through soap. The warrior of Kabul lost his head. It was like a coconut falling off its branch. His body fell to the ground. The tree was pulled from its roots. He thought the strike was coming for his legs but Guru ji chopped his head off. He died and went to heaven as he died from the hands of Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. He died in front of Guru ji.
7-54 Satguru ji’s Victory
Killing Lalla Beg, Satguru ji was happy. He had won the battle. Guru ji came back and said to the army: “charge the Turks. Kill the ones that attack. Arrest the ones that surrender. Lalla Beg is dead. They can’t fight without a leader. Win the battle. Guru Nanak Dev ji has been by your side.” Everyone heard this and pulled out their swords. They attacked like hawks on sparrow; like lions on deer. The warriors fought the enemy. They killed the ones that attacked. The charge was fierce. The Pathaans were killed. Some lost their heads; some lost their limbs. They fought a little and then some ran away. They left their weapons and surrendered. They gave Guru ji’s sake to live. They put grass in their mouths and became humble. They lived. Guru ji was victorious. The Turks surrendered. Guru ji didn’t kill them. Guru ji said Bhai Bidhi Chand ji: “don’t kill the captives.” Baba Bidhi Chand ji stopped the Sikhs from killing the captives. The army shouted jaikaras. The men were brought back. The injured were picked up. The Nagaras of victory were sounded. The warriors were happy. Bhai Jodh Rai ji and Guru ji were happy. They came back to their camps. The men all bowed to Guru ji and praised him. Guru ji looked after the injured. He asked how Bhai Jodh Rai ji and the other Sikhs were. He said to Bhai Jodh Rai ji: “go to your camp and rest.” Bhai Jodh Rai ji was happy and went to his tent to rest. Guru ji had the army counted, both dead and alive. The generals were all told: “find out how many men in your regiments are Shaheeds.” They all counted their men and gave Guru ji the results. They said: “Maharaj, the Sikhs along with Bhai Jodh Rai ji’s men, there were 4,000 in total; we have counted everyone. 1,200 have died in battle. They fought with the Turks serving you. The others are in their tents, resting.” Fires were lit as it was cold. The injured were being taken care of. Many servants were assigned to serve them. The doctors were called to serve them.
Guru ji called Bhai Jodh Rai ji to him. Bhai Jodh Rai ji had many wounds. They were getting stiff with the cold. Guru ji casted his divine sight onto him. He put his hand on Bhai Jodh Rai ji’s wound. Wherever there were deep cuts, the pain was all gone. Guru ji took away the pain. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji and Bhai Jaati Malik ji, Guru ji blessed them with his vision as well. Their pain was all gone. No Sikh was in pain anymore. They were fully recovered in a few days, afterwards. The soldiers all ate and rested. They gave their horses hay and feed. They tended their wounds as well. The prisoners of war were allowed to drink water at the pond. Hassan Khan, the spy, was with the Sikhs though. He ate with the Sikhs.
Guru Hargobind Sahib ji sent many Sikhs to where Bhai Jetha ji’s body was. He said: “go and get his body along with the other Sikhs. They fought with bravery. Collect them all and cremate them by the Maryada. Go and collect firewood from the jungle. A big pyre should be prepared. The Turks need to be buried. Dig a really big mass grave. Place all of their bodies in the grave. Collect the bodies first. Don’t take their weapons off. Bury them too. Don’t take anything from them, not even their clothes. The 5 Umraavs that died, place them at the top. Put a lot of soil on top. Make a big platform on top. Make it leveled so it can be used for sitting on top of. Do this quickly. If the bodies are left out, diseases will spread.” The Sikhs obeyed and collected all of the Sikhs. They collected all the bodies including Bhai Jetha ji’s and performed the cremation. Many people were called from the nearby areas to dig a big grave. The prisoners of war were made to dig as well. Guru ji said to everyone: “don’t take any of the weapons from the dead warriors. Bury them with the weapons and clothes.” Everyone gathered the bodies of the Turks as well. The Turks that died in battle, they were all placed in the big grave. Many people from around the area also helped. There were other spectators that came but Guru ji told them to work as well. They all brought the bodies as well. Some picked the bodies, some dragged them. They threw them into the grave with their weapons and clothes. They worked quickly to complete the task. The grave was full. Some were bringing the bodies; some were running to get another. There were Jaikaras everywhere. Many Turks were killed. They were amazed at how a few number of Sikhs killed 35,000 Turks. The news spread. Some came from 20 miles away to see this. The Turks were placed in the grave. The bodies of the 5 generals were brought too. They were placed on top.
A Sikh from Maraaj saw the body of Kumber Beg. Kumber Beg still had his sword in his hand. The hilt was very expensive. It had diamonds and gems in it. It was made of gold. It was made in another country. It was made of Faulaad. It was very beautiful. The Sikh got greedy and took the sword. He hid it. He made sure nobody found it. He wanted to take it home. He was afraid of Guru ji’s command. He got really greedy and was no longer afraid of Guru ji. No other Sikh took any weapon. Many thousands of men were placed in the grave. Soil was put on top. They were all buried. A big platform was made on top. They went to Guru ji and said: “the grave is ready. The platform is made.”
Guru ji bathed and changed his clothes. He wore his royal Chola. He wore his Shasters. It was around 5pm. Guru ji took Bhai Jodh Rai ji and went to go see the grave. The Nagaras, conches and Ransinghas were played as Guru ji came. The Sikhs shouted out Jaikaras. Guru ji got on top of the platform. The brave warrior Guru sat on top of a throne. He had a Divaan on top. He was going to bless the dead Turks by doing Keertan. The Rababis came to do Keertan. The Sikhs were happy. They said: “Dhan Guru Hargobind Sahib ji.” Guru ji spoke to the senior Sikhs about the battle. They were all happy.
Guru ji called the Sikh from Maraaj and said to him: “the sword that you hid, bring it. We are going to bury it. It is not good to keep it. Bury it with the enemy.” The Sikh was amazed. He wondered who told Guru ji. He did not have faith in Guru ji. He thought someone told on him. He thought someone was jealous. He was greedy. He denied it. He said: “I didn’t take anything.” Guru ji was omniscient. He figured he was greedy. He cursed the Sikh: “you didn’t listen to me. You are greedy. This sword will stay in your family and keep moving. Your family will use it on each other. They will kill each other. Uncles and nephews will kill each other.” Kavi Santokh Singh ji has met this family. They were always fighting with one other.
It was evening. Guru ji sat there. Thousands came to see him. People saw the battlefield and were amazed. Many were killed. They all bowed to Guru ji and brought many gifts. They were all happy and surprised at how the battle happened. Guru ji got up at dark. He came to his big tent. There was a beautiful big bed laid out that took in his big body. The other Sikhs went to their own tents. They ate and went to sleep without worries. The victory was of Vahiguru ji. This news spread to many lands. Guru ji went to sleep.
Guru ji woke up at Amritvela and performed his morning cleansing routines. He bathed and sat in Samadhi. The Rababis sang Asa Vaar. The army was doing Simran and reciting Bani. The Sikhs recited and listened to Gurbani. Amrit was being showered on all. As everyone was doing Darshan of Guru Hargobind Sahib ji, the hearts were becoming pure. They were drenched in the love of Parmeshwar. When the sun came up, Guru ji held court. Bhai Jodh Rai ji and Bhai Salaim Shah ji came to the court. Baba Bidhi Chand ji and Pandit Jatti Malik ji came. All of the warriors sat in the court. They all bowed to Satguru ji. They were all wearing their weapons. They were all happy to see Guru ji. Chaurs were waived over his head. Hassan Khan came to the court as well. He folded his hands and bowed his head. He said: “you are omnipotent. You are omniscient. There is no one equal to you in this world. You are the provider of all life forms. Whatever you think of, becomes true. What command is there for me? Please bless me so that I am content. The Turks have all died. You are victorious. Your praise has spread in the world.” Guru ji smiled and said: “you will be the Sooba of Kabul. You will receive the status that Lalla Beg had. You came to the shelter of the Guru so you will be rewarded. The Turks that have survived, take them with you and go to Shah Jahan. Tell him what happened here. You will be given the horses that were theirs. Tell the Badshah that Lalla Beg and his officers have been killed with the whole army. Inform the relatives of the dead Turks of how the Badshah had their relatives killed. Here are their horses.” Hassan Khan had faith in Guru ji. He obeyed and got ready. He took the 100 surviving men along with their horses and came to bow to Guru ji. They all thanked Guru ji for sparing their lives. Guru ji blessed them as they had all bowed their heads. Guru ji saw no enemies. Guru ji gave them all expensive Siropas. He gave them leave.
The journey was a long one. Hassan Khan left to inform the Badshah. He went quickly and did the Simran of Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. He arrived in Lahore. He was quite tired. Some of the men were really tired as they were injured. They had lost a battle. They did not look forward to meeting the Emperor. Their clothes were ripped. They had no weapons.
7-55 Hassan Khan becomes the Sooba of Kabul
The ones that came to the Shah, they showed themselves to the officers of the Royal Court. They told the officers that they are the remaining soldiers of Lalla Beg’s army. Shah Jahan was waiting for his horses, Dilbagh and Gulbagh. He said: “Lalla Beg must have gotten my horses. He must have gone to the Guru and fought him. He must have killed him or arrested him. I sent a lot of soldiers with him. Which warrior can face my army? Dilbagh and Gulbagh will come back to me soon. Lalla Beg will bring them back. It’s been a few days now. Was there a battle or not? Our army went quick without resting. There was one message about reaching; but I didn’t get news if they met the Guru or not. Did the Guru surrender? Maybe he got scared and gave the horses back.” The Emperor spoke to his court like this everyday. He said this the day Kassam Beg arrived as well. Salaabat Khan was an officer in the court who spoke: “I just got news that an Afghani has arrived and wishes to see you. I asked him where he came from. He said: “I came from the Jungle Desh. I am a companion of Lalla Beg.” That’s all the conversation I had with him. He didn’t say anything else.” The Badshah was excited when he heard this. He said: “bring him to me quick! Don’t stop him. Let him come inside. I want to hear what happened.” An Arzbeghi (messenger) was sent to get Hassan Beg. He said to his juniors: “go to Lalla Beg’s camp. Call his soldiers. Call the leader. The Emperor wishes to see them right now.”
The messenger went to the camp. Hassan Beg came off his horse when the messenger arrived. He said: “the Badshah wishes to see you, right now. Come quick.” Hassan Khan changed his clothes and went to the court.
Hassan Khan was received by Salaabat Khan. They both saluted the Emperor 7 times. Hassan Khan stood there. Bhai Wazir Khan ji was seated in the court. He figured out something interesting had happened. He was wise. He had faith in the Guru’s feet. He was patient and a great Gursikh. The other Umraavs listened to him. He gave good advice to the Shah that was good in both worlds. Everyone listened to him. Hassan Khan looked at Bhai Wazir Khan. The Badshah said: “how did the meeting with the Guru go? Did you get the two horses or not? Did the Guru call a truce or did he fight? Where did you meet the Guru? Did you meet him? Tell me everything, what Lalla Beg had done.” Hassan Khan heard this. He folded his hands and said: “Sire, you gave us an army and sent Lalla Beg. You told us to go quick and get the horses. Listening to you, the forces went. They did not rest on the way by your command. Lalla Beg did not let anyone stop and rest along the way. They moved for 40 hours. The men and horses got tired. They kept running. The tired soldiers kept saying: “we still have to fight ahead. We are tired and hungry. We won’t be able to fight.” I said the same thing to Lalla Beg and the others. They did not listen. They said: “it is the command of the Badshah to go quickly and catch the Guru. We need to get the horses, quick. You can rest after that.” We arrived to where the Guru was at around midnight. We had found out where the Guru is and we attacked. Lalla Beg had the Nagaras sounded. The Guru’s army fought as well. He only had about 4,000 men. We had 35,000. The Sikhs fired at us with their rifles and arrows. They killed our men. They came yelling. As we fought, it got really cold. Our bodies went numb from the cold. We couldn’t see anything in the dark. The dust flew as well. We couldn’t open our hands. The weapons fell from our hands. We couldn’t fight the Guru’s army. We couldn’t use our weapons. Our people were cold. It was like they were tied up. The cold and hunger made us like rock. The Guru’s men were warm as they had fires lit in their camp. They came and charged all at once. They killed our men and finished the army. Many men and horses were killed. Another interesting thing happened: they attacked us first and killed hundreds. They then quickly left without us knowing. We didn’t know they were gone and so we started to kill our own men. They went to the other side and fired their rifles on us. We cut our own men down. We didn’t know how to save ourselves. By morning, 3 fourths of our army was gone. We killed our own men. 25,000 men were dead. We then attacked in the morning with 10,000 men. The Umraavs attacked. They were shocked to see all their dead men. They took the whole army and fought the Guru’s army. Lalla Beg sounded the Nagara and wanted to fight the Guru. He charged but Guru Hargobind Sahib ji came himself. There was a fierce battle after that. There were bodies everywhere with blood. The Guru killed Kabil Beg with one strike of his sword. He gave the Guru a wound before he died. The Guru ignored the wound and kept fighting. He then fought Lalla Beg. Gulbagh was killed in the battle as the Guru was riding it. It was hit with many weapons. The Guru got angry and killed Lalla Beg with his sword. The Guru had 4,000 men that killed our 35,000 men. Only 1,200 Sikhs died. I am the unfortunate one to give you this news. The general lost the battle because he did not use his wisdom. The whole army died. We lost. Our dead men looked like they were sleeping. It was like a ladder to heaven. 100 men survived, whom I have brought back with me.” The Badshah heard this and was shocked. He was really upset. He said: “what misfortune they dealt with. The generals were good politicians and warriors. They were undefeated. They didn’t accomplish anything. Their power was useless. The Guru is still alive.” Hassan Khan said: “in this war, Lalla Beg died because he was stubborn. He did not fight like a smart responsible warrior. He was too proud of himself and thought the Guru was weak. He did not think of strategy nor did he strive to save his own men. He lost his wisdom. I tried to talk sense into him but he didn’t listen. He destroyed his army by his foolishness. I told him not to do this and he insulted me. He threw me out and so the others went quiet too. I watched his whole army die. It was like they were tied up and being chopped by someone. It was a cold night. Our men were like handicaps. During the day, they fought but the Guru won the battle. We lost.”
Bhai Wazir Khan ji heard this and said: “I have seen this many times. I have told you about the power of the Guru. The Guru’s house is filled with miracles and powers. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is the supreme. He is the Peer of Peers. There is no one else like him. The whole world knows this. The ones that had conflict with him, they were killed. You should think about this. I don’t know what to do at this point. Lalla Beg didn’t think. Your elder, Babar, he was given the boon of 7 generations of rule. The Guru gave him the rule of Delhi. He took it away from the Khans and gave it to the Mughals. Babar got the Takhat by the Guru’s word. The whole world knows that. He met Guru ji in Ahmnabad. He bowed to the Guru and made him happy. When the rule came to Humayun, he got a boon from Guru Angad Dev ji and got the rule of Delhi and Agra. Sulaym Shah (Sher Shah Suri) took the rule from Humayun but he got it back. Akbar was very wise. Sri Guru Amardas ji gave him a boon and so he won the fort of Chittorgarh. He gave many villages to the Guru. Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji and Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji were friends with Jahangir. He used to respect them with his hands folded. He figured out that they were the supreme. The Guru protected the Emperor when the lions scared him. The Emperor bowed to the Guru and released many kings from Gwalior. You have taken a conflict with the Guru. You took the Guru’s horses first. You didn’t get to ride that horse as it got sick. You gave it to Qazi Rustum Khan. The Guru bought the horse from him and got it again. The horse was well again. The Guru rode him. You fought a battle because of a Baaz. Mughlas Khan was killed. Then, the Sooba of Jalandhar, Abdul Khan fought a battle with the Guru and died. Now, what was the big deal about losing your horses that you had such a big army destroyed? They got killed in the cold. Nobody survived. The Guru only had 4,000 that killed your army. He is the Guru. He can destroy the world with one word. He can do as he pleases. How can you compare to him? Why don’t you think about this? Keep the same tradition as your elders of bowing your head to the Guru. Sire, you should bow too if you don’t want to ruin your rule. This is the reason why I stopped you from going to battle. Your elders received boons from the Guru. They ruled many lands because of that. You fought the same Guru. This is not good. You made a big deal of hawks and horses. You can always get what you want. You shouldn’t go against the Guru. The Guru is a great power. Listen to me Sire. You are wise. You should think before doing anything.” Shah Jahan heard this and went quiet. He started thinking and cooled his anger down. He thought to himself: “I have not won the Guru yet. I lost 3 times against him.” He made his heart clean towards the Guru. He was tired of fighting. He decided not to fight the Guru anymore. After a long time, he raised his head and looked at Hassan Khan.
Salaabat Khan said: “Lalla Beg, his brother, his nephew and his sons were all killed. There is no Sooba for Kabul. You need to make a Soobadaar and send him to Kabul. Someone needs to take care of the rule of Kabul. Find a wise person and give him a Siropa. Make sure that person is wise and that keeps the peace. That person needs to know right from wrong.” Satguru ji manipulated the mind of the Emperor in an instance. The Badshah looked at Hassan Khan and said: “this person has spoken well. His advice was sound. He proved to be wise. Give him the status along with the Siropa. Send him to Kabul. This is what I think.” Bhai Wazir Khan ji said: “I agree with you. He should be the Sooba and sent.” Salaabat Khan heard this and said: “this is the best decision.” Everyone agreed. Hassan Khan became the Sooba of Kabul. He was a poor person but now he was a ruler. He took an army and went to Kabul. He did Simran of the Guru along the way. It was by the blessing of Sri Satguru ji that he became a great Sooba. Whoever comes to Guru ji’s shelter, they are blessed.
