7-31 Dilbagh, the First Horse

Baba Bidhi Chand ji tied a Kumerkassa.  He tied his Dastaar.  He took the keys from the Kaleedhan and went to the storage room.  By the Guru’s blessing, the first key he tried was the right one.  He opened the locks and took out the expensive saddle, quickly.  He went to Dilbagh and saddled him up.  He was tied with silk ropes, which Baba Bidhi Chand ji opened.  He patted Dilbagh on the back and the neck.  He put the reins on Dilbagh.  He put the bit in the horse’s mouth and rested the reins on its neck.  He placed a cloth on the back and tied the girth and billet straps of the saddle.  The straps were made from silk.  Baba ji pulled the straps to tighten them.  The stirrups were made of silver with diamonds embedded into them.  He hung both of them on either side.  He adjusted the “dumchi” into its tail.  He then opened the ropes tied to the horse’s hindlegs.  He thought of the Guru and said: “Satnam!  This is your task.  Please complete it with success.  I will be committing the sin of riding this horse before you, Guru ji.  I ask for forgiveness (with my hands folded).  I will pay a fine for it.  I will give 5 Rajitpuns of Karah Prashaad to the Sangat for this and ask for forgiveness.  If I don’t ride this horse now, this mission won’t be completed.”  Baba ji did Parkarma of the horse and bowed to its legs.  He said: “Satnam,” and jumped to mount the horse.  He took out the whip, made of gold and gems, and walked the horse around to warm it up for the task ahead.  The horse was strong.  It was warmed up in a few minutes.  Baba ji wanted to jump the wall and land into the river.  He had planned all of this in his mind.  He turned the horse and slapped the whip on Dilbagh’s right side.  Dilbagh got angry and came into attention.  Baba ji signaled the horse to ride with the reins.  The horse ran and jumped twice before reaching the wall.  He was angry, so he didn’t see the wall as a big deal.  Dilbagh jumped with all its legs and went over the wall.  It waived its tail and nodded its head as it flew over the wall.  Baba ji and Dilbagh were both airborne and going towards the Ravi.  They landed into the river where the water was deep.  Both of them went deep into the water and then came back up to the surface.  Baba ji was an excellent rider.  He pulled the reins and stabilized the horse.  The horse swam across the river.  He caused a really big splash while landing into the water.  It sounded like some minaret of a building had fallen into the river.  The sound woke up a lot of people but they ignored it, thinking it was the same noise they heard everyday during that time.  They all remained quiet.  Nobody checked or talked.  Baba Bidhi Chand ji was really wise.  He and the horse reached the shore.  Baba ji patted the horse to give it encouragement.  He calmed the horse down by patting it on its neck.  He thought about this jump everyday before this time.  He was now figuring out a path to leave.  He faced Guru ji and rode the horse that way.  He was riding with bliss.  The horse rode like the wind.  Baba Bidhi Chand ji was reciting Gurbani:

Sri Mukhvaak..

The Guru is always by my side..

I have understood that the Guru is inside of me..1..

(SGGS 394)

He sung other Shabads as he rode.  Riding the horse was pleasant for Baba ji.  The horse rode with strength.  Baba Bidhi Chand ji was not moving as the ride was smooth.  In about 45 mins, the moon came to its highest place.  There was now light as Baba ji came out of Lahore.  He patted the horse and rode fast.  He kept looking up at the stars so he wouldn’t go off his path.  If a village came on the way, he would not go in.  He travelled on the outskirts.  He soon reached the junction of the Sutlej and the Beas.  He saw the rivers and made the horse swim across.  The wide chest of the horse was under the water.  They crossed the rivers.  Baba ji got off the horse and tied it to a tree.  They had entered Malva.  Baba ji took a bath and tied his Dastaar.  He thought of Guru ji and mounted the horse again.  The horse was great at riding and swimming.  It was a pleasant ride for Baba Bidhi Chand ji.  It rode fast, like a vessel of the Devatas, flying through the sky.  Baba ji thought of Guru Hargobind Sahib ji: “you are compassionate.  You made this task successful.”  Baba ji enjoyed the ride.  He didn’t ride him too fast.  On the first day, they travelled far.  The horse hadn’t travelled so long before.  He made the horse rest often along the way.  He didn’t want Dilbagh getting too tired.  He wanted the horse to reach to Guru ji.  He was going to massage it when they would reach.  Baba ji would change the horse’s trot and run as they rode.  The horse wanted to run fast but Baba ji slowed it down.  He still felt he was going slow but they would cover a great distance.

The next day, they continued riding till evening.  During the late evening, the familiar places of Roopa Village could be seen.  Baba Bidhi Chand ji was happy to see this.  He prayed: “Guru Hargobind Sahib ji, I have arrived.”  Baba Bidhi Chand ji got off his horse a mile before reaching.  He then walked the horse slowly.  He took his shoes off in respect.

Guru ji’s Divaan was in session.  The Rababis were singing Keertan in Raags.  Guru Hargobind Sahib ji looked into the distance and saw Baba Bidhi Chand ji walking alongside Dilbagh.  Guru ji’s lotus eyes bloomed and his face turned into a radiant smile as he saw Baba Bidhi Chand ji with the horse.  Guru ji got off from his Takhat to meet Baba Bidhi Chand ji, like Ram Chander ji getting up to meet Hanuman ji on his return from locating Mata Seeta ji from Lanka.  Baba Bidhi Chand ji saw Guru ji and ran towards him.  He jumped to Guru ji’s feet and placed his head onto them.  Guru ji raised him by the shoulders, like Ram Chander ji raising Hanuman, and embraced him in a tight hug.  Guru ji blessed Baba Bidhi Chand ji with his sight.  Both did the impossible tasks.  Hanuman jumped the ocean to go to Lanka.  Both were fortunate beings.  Baba Bidhi Chand ji did the most impossible task.  It was the task for the Guru’s love.  Neither thought of their own lives.  They were focused on the success of their master’s task.  Guru ji asked how he was; just like Ram Chander ji asked Hanuman.  Guru ji was the form of Akaal Purakh.  Jogis meditated on this form with great effort.  That form was standing in front of Baba Bidhi Chand ji.  Guru ji had Baba Bidhi Chand ji in a loving embrace.  Who can compare to this?  Baba Bidhi Chand ji said: “you are always by your servants’ sides.  By your blessing, no danger came close to me.  You made this task possible.  You took me out of the difficult fort of the Badshah, who is the master of the land and has hundreds of thousands of soldiers.  He has thousands of guards who protect him and stay awake all night.  I have brought you the most beloved horse of Shah Jahan.  Who else besides you can make this possible?”

The Sikhs with Satguru ji; Bhai Jodh Rai ji and others, quickly got up to see the amazing horse.  They were happy and amazed to see the horse.  The horse was like it was chiselled by an artist.  It was a work of art from nose to tail.  The saddle and reins were full of precious metals and gems.  It was like a painting on a canvas.  It was like the beauty of the world was gathered by Brahma and molded into this appearance.  It looked like the beauty was churned from the ocean (of beauty) with great strength by Kamadeva with the Mandrachal mountain (Bir Rass) and radiance being the rope.  The result being this horse.  The seven-faced horse of the Sun could not compare to Dilbagh.  That horse was for the Sun but this horse was for the Sun of Suns.  What else can it be compared to?  Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji patted the horse on the back.  He checked its body.  Just as people described it, Baba Bidhi Chand ji had shown Guru ji that horse.  Guru ji said: “we have taken revenge on the Badshah.  He took my horse first.  Bidhi Chand, you took his horse with greater strength.  You took that revenge.”  Bhai Roop Chand ji, Bhai Sadhoo ji and Bhai Jodh Rai ji along with the other warriors were standing by.  They were happy with Baba Bidhi Chand ji.  They were all amazed at the horse.  They all understood the radiance of Guru Hargobind Sahib ji.  He was the one that did everything.  The person can’t do anything on his own.  The person is only an excuse.

Guru ji saw Bhai Jetha ji standing by and gave him the horse to care of it.  Guru ji said: “take care of this horse as Bidhi Chand ji says.  Massage him.  He has come a long way.”  Two servants started massaging the horse right away.  They brushed it and massaged it.  The horse had been still for many days and had to ride a long distance, all of a sudden.  It was tired.  The horse’s face and nostrils were cleaned.  The horse was cleaned and massaged.  The saddle was taken off after 3 hours.  (The saddle should never be taken off right away as the perspiration under the saddle would get cold, thereby making the horse sick) The saddle was studded with diamonds and other precious gems.  The horse was given green baby grass to eat.  The stables were cleaned for it.  Karah Prashaad was given to Dilbagh.  A big sheet was placed on top of the horse so it wouldn’t get cold.

7-32 Dilbagh the Horse

Dilbagh came to Guru ji in this way.  Oh saints, as it happened; what happened in Lahore, listen to the Katha as Kavi Santokh Singh narrates.

Saundha Khan ate food and went to sleep at night in his own home.  He didn’t sleep in the fort as he was a senior officer.  He woke up in the morning and came to the fort.  He looked to the stables and only saw one horse.  One was missing.  He was shocked to see this.  He yelled out loud to the workers: “where are you fools sleeping?”  He pointed and yelled: “where is the other horse?”  The other workers were sleeping.  They had drunk so much the night before that they hadn’t woken up yet.  They heard the Daroga call out and jumped up, shouting: “the Daroga is here from his home.”  They ran and looked towards the stables.  They all looked around and couldn’t find the horse.  They wondered where the horse went.  They felt a deep fear in their hearts.  There was no sign of break-ins.  The gates were all locked.  There was a small window open but nothing else.

The news reached the Badshah.  The Badshah yelled: “where did the horse go?”  The Shah got upset and came down to the stables.  He saw only one horse.  The guards and workers all got together to look for the horse.  They saw the tracks of the horse and noticed that it walked around the courtyard in the centre.  They couldn’t understand how it left though.  They said: “where did it go?”  They were confused.  The Badshah called the workers and said: “the horse was stolen.  Why didn’t you keep watch?”  The workers folded their hands and said: “we were on guard at the doors.  Nothing happened.  It seems he just disappeared.  Nobody came from outside.  It seems he went into the ground.  Nobody knows where it went.  It’s either that, or it had to have gone up towards the sky.  No human can come here.  No thief came.”  Many wise officers came to figure this out.  They called Jyotishis and trackers.  They all analysed the situation and couldn’t figure out how the horse left.  They hypothesized but weren’t sure.  The Badshah heard them and was upset.  He said: “who took my favourite horse?  Who has called for their destruction?  Who on this earth is not afraid of me?  Foreign kings can not keep any of my things with them.  They wouldn’t dare try to steal from me.  Who has developed a second head and wishes to die?  Who is so fearless that has taken my horse?  If someone hides in the mountains, my army can find them.  If someone is in the jungles or the dessert, I can have them found from there.  My army is huge.  I won’t let anyone go.  This person has become my greatest enemy.  If I find the person, I will have them killed.”  The Badshah was angry, thinking of his horse.  He said to all his workers: “there aren’t such Dariya horses anywhere in the lands.  They are rare, even if someone has the money.”  The Badshah looked at the Daroga and said to him in anger: “gather the trackers and astrologers.  Bring them to me.  Tell them to find the horse in any way they can.  Send an army with them once they find the tracks.  Follow the tracks and find the horse.  Whoever gives me news, I will send a big army with them.  They will get the horse and the thief.  They will be killed on the spot.  No other punishment will be given other than death.”  The Badshah went back to the Saman Burj.  He was really angry.

The trackers all gathered.  They used their skills and knowledge to find the tracks.  Where the horse spun around, they looked.  They saw the horse go back and forth.  They couldn’t figure out how the horse left the fort.  The tracks didn’t lead up to any gate or door.  The Maya of the Guru made all of their wisdoms fail.  They couldn’t figure out if it went into the ground or into the sky.  They couldn’t figure it out.  They all came out of the fort and looked near the walls.  They looked all around for miles around.  They knew it must have left at night but they couldn’t find the tracks.  They got together and thought.  They couldn’t find anything.  They were all shocked.  They said: “did a big bird take the horse?  Did it fly away with the horse?”  They all got tired and went to the Badshah.  The Badshah said: “what did you find?  In which direction did it go?  This is shocking.”  The trackers folded their hands and said: “Sire, we can’t figure this out.  It seems as though “Farishtas,” angels from the sky took it.  It either fly up or it went into the ground with some magic.  There is another problem; the gates and doors of the fort were closed.  We have checked the logs.  The doors did not open for anyone.  The horse didn’t leave from the doors.  If someone made the horse jump the wall, they would have landed into the river.  They could have taken it that way.  That’s all we can think of.”  They all said this and went quiet.  Everyone heard this and said: “this can’t happen.  The wall of the fort is 60 feet high on the other side.  You can’t make the horse jump from the inside and into the water.  The wall on the inside is high as well.  A thief can’t be that brave.  It’s like playing with death.  This is impossible.  We can’t believe this.  The horse doesn’t have wings.”  What else can be said?  The wise people thought hard.  The Badshah said to the trackers: “find the horse in any way you can.  You are paid to do this work.  Call the astrologers and magicians.  Whoever know these skills, call them all.  Call them from other lands.  Ask them where the horse is now.  We will do as they say.  Find out where the horse is.  You will all be rewarded.  Send the message to all of the Soobas.”  The Badshah commanded to collect all the skilled people.  The messages were sent to all the lands.  They were to find the horse.

The Daroga looked around and said: “where is Kasera?  He always stayed close to the horses.”  The workers all looked around but couldn’t find Kasera.  They all said: “it looks like Kasera got scared when he found out that the horse was missing.  He must of ran away, thinking that he was going to get in trouble.  He must have thought the Daroga was going to beat him that he couldn’t protect the horse.”  The Satguru spoiled everyone’s wisdom.  The workers couldn’t figure out the truth.

Guru Hargobind Sahib ji was really happy to see the strong and beautiful horse.  He listened to Baba Bidhi Chand ji say the whole story.  Guru ji laughed and listened with joy.  Guru ji said: “great work!  You are wise and clever.”  Baba Bidhi Chand ji said: “with your blessing, I fooled them all.  They lost their senses.  They didn’t know who I was.  This was your thing to begin with.  You brought your horse back to you.  You wanted to give me praises, seeing me as your servant.”  Everyone ate and went to sleep.  Everyone was happy.

At Amritvela everyone got up and bathed.  They recited Gurbani from memory.  They recited Japji, Sukhmani and other Banis.  The Rababis sang Asa Vaar.  They sang various Raags.  There was Simran of Satnam everywhere.  The Jaikaras of Kartar was happening.  There was peace at Amritvela.  It was Sach Khand.  The readers and listeners were calm, listening to Bani.  Guru ji’s Darbar was Vaikunth, where lust, anger and other vices are washed away.  The sun soon came up.  The stars disappeared.  The Asa Vaar was complete.  Bhai Jetha ji came to Guru ji and folded his hands.  He said: “Maharaj, the horse is really strong.  He is not eating with joy.  He is crying.  He seems depressed.  We can’t figure out what is wrong with him.  I served him all night with a lit Diva.  He didn’t eat anything.  He is tired so we massaged him a lot.  We gave him hope by patting him down but he is not happy.  I ask you to go and pat him.  Please bless him.”  Bhai Jodh Shah ji spoke: “he was standing in one place.  He did a long journey after many years.  He may be tired.”  Guru ji heard Bhai Jodh Shah ji and said: “I think that because he is crying, he may be in pain.  He is feeling the pain of the separation from his friend.  The horse he used to live with, he is missing him.  Bidhi Chand ji told me that he had a friend just like him.  They were both Dariya Horses.  This is Dilbagh.  The other is Gulbagh.  They were together and were friends.  They ate together.  They stayed together.  They stayed tied up together all the time.  They have never been apart from each other.  The only came out on Eid and other special days.  Otherwise, they stayed standing.  He is missing his friend.  The tears prove this.”  Everyone understood that the horse missed his friend.

7-33 Gulbagh, the Second Horse

Guru ji got up, knowing that Dilbagh was depressed.  Guru ji was the great “Gareeb Nivaaj,” who did many tasks for his servants.  He went to the horse and saw it.  He noticed tears in the eyes of the horse.  The horse was depressed.  It didn’t look up.  He didn’t eat much.  Guru Hargobind Sahib ji said to Bhai Rai Jodh ji: “he is definitely depressed.  He is separated from his friend.  There are no signs of illnesses or other pain.  Both him and his friend were tied up together.”  Bhai Jodh Rai ji respected Guru ji’s words and said: “you knew this.  You are the master of all the powers.  Whoever doubts you is a fool.  Please pat the horse and make his mind calm.”  Satguru ji took his lotus hand and patted Dilbagh on his back and neck.  He touched his face and eyes.  He patted him for a long time.  Guru ji re-named him “Jaan Bhai.”  He said to him: “Jaan Bhai, eat the grass and seeds with joy.  You came to the home of the Guru.  Don’t be sad.  The pain of the body and mind is cut here.  The one you want to be with, he will come here too.  The Prabhoo makes the beloveds meet each other.”  Dilbagh heard Satguru ji’s words and snorted in joy.  He was happy and started to eat right away.  The true Guru was able to communicate with birds and animals.  Jaan Bhai ate the grass.  Bhai Jodh ji and the other Sikhs saw this miracle.  They saw the horse eat food and drink water with joy.  They were happy.  They all said: “Dhan Guru Hargobind Sahib ji!”

Guru ji then went into solitude and called Bhai Jodh Rai ji.  Bhai Bidhi Chand ji was called as well.  They both were seated with respect.  Guru ji said: “you did an amazing task to bring the horse, Bidhi Chand.  You are very wise.  You showed everyone the most impossible thing.  Only you could have done this.  No one else.  Nobody else has this type of wisdom and strength.  Without the second horse, this task would remain fruitless, though.  The first horse misses his friend.  He is depressed.  The other horse must be depressed as well.  They are both in pain.  They are both depressed.  They will both lose their health if they don’t meet each other.  You will have to make the effort to bring the second horse.  Otherwise, take this horse back.  They both need to be together.  This is what I want.  I want the horses to be together, no matter where they are.”  Bhai Jodh Rai ji heard this and said: “Guru ji, let’s talk about bringing the horse here.  Let’s not return this horse.  It is a very hard task and will get even harder.  It is literally impossible now but with your compassion and blessing, Bidhi Chand ji will use his intellect to get the second horse.  I have seen that he is a very smart and clever man.  I haven’t seen such a person like him in the world.  To bring the second horse will be difficult but I am sure that if you help Bidhi Chand ji, the second horse will come.”  Baba Bidhi Chand ji folded his hands and said: “this task is difficult for others.  The horses are under a strict surveillance.  Thousands of soldiers guard the fort.  The horse is inside the fort.  It is difficult to go in but because of your radiance, I don’t see it as anything big.  I can take it out of an iron cage with your blessing.  The Guru made the wisdom of the guards fail.  Nobody figured out my plan.  Listen Prabhoo ji, why should we take this horse back?  I will bring the second horse here.  I will bring his friend to him.  Bless me this time too.  The armed guards that are guarding the fort, I will deceive them again.  I will bring this horse in front of their eyes.  I just need your compassion and blessing.  Please give me permission to do this.  I will bring the horse and do your Darshan soon.”  Guru ji smiled and said: “go Bidhi Chand.  The Guru will be by your side.  Do this task quick.  The battle will start right away after this.  We will kill the Turks.”  Baba Bidhi Chand ji heard this and bowed to Guru ji’s feet.  He grabbed his feet and placed his forehead onto Guru ji’s feet.  He kissed his feet.  Baba Bidhi Chand ji was given permission to go to Lahore.  The first mission was like Hanuman ji’s mission to bring news of Mata Seeta ji.  The second mission is more difficult.  As Baba ji was bowing, Guru ji patted Baba Bidhi Chand ji on the back and said: “whatever you want to happen, will happen.  You will not face any obstacle or difficulty.  Your wisdom will over-power everyone.  Humans are nothing, the Devatas will not be able to stop you.”

Baba Bidhi Chand ji left for Lahore.  He had no fear or doubt in his mind.  Satguru ji remained in Roopa Village.  Bhai Jodh Rai ji said to Guru ji: “we have set up a Dhera here for a long time.  I will tell you what wish I have in my mind: about 8 km from here, is where my village is.  Your servant’s home is there.  Please come there.  Make my home and village pure.  Give your servant greatness.  Spend some time there.”  Bhai Jodh Rai ji had requested this before.  Seeing Bhai Jodh Rai ji’s love, Guru ji made preparations to go.  Bhai Sadhoo ji and Bhai Roop Chand ji found out.  They said to Guru ji: “we wish to come with you as well.  We will serve you as your servants.  We will be in bliss seeing you.  We want to make our life a success.  We can’t separate from you.  Your feet have bliss.”  Satguru ji said: “you are always with me.  Listen to me and stay here.  You are to run the Langar here.  Whatever you say will become true.  If you bless someone, it will become true.  Keep your words in your control.  Be careful with what you say.  Your words will become true.  Don’t make blessings or curses without thinking.  Be determined.  Live in your new village.  Your family will grow and will be praised in the word.  You will be happy in this world and in the next.  I have many tasks to do.  I have to fight battles now.  I need to be away from householders so that they are not bothered by war.  I will fight Turks now.  Metal will clash on metal.  You are saints.  Your traditions are like Sadhoos.  Give Langar to all.  I have warriors with me.”  Bhai Sadhoo ji and Bhai Roop Chand ji were happy to hear this.  They obeyed Guru ji and bowed their heads to Guru ji’s feet.  Bhai Roop Chand ji’s mother came to bow to Guru ji.  She grabbed Guru ji’s feet.  Prabhoo ji gave her hope.

Jaan Bhai was saddled with the golden saddle.  It had many diamonds and precious gems in it.  They were different coloured gems.  They shined in the sun.  A Jigha was tied with a Kalgi on the horse’s head.  A nice cloth was placed on the horse.  The tassels were made of Zarri.  The cleverness of the world was in this horse.  The ropes were made of silk.  The Sevadaars brought the horse to Guru ji.  Guru ji thought to himself: “when the other horse comes, I will ride him then.  He is still depressed.”  Jaan Bhai was taken without a rider in the front.  Guru ji got on top of his previous horse.  The Nagaras sounded and the army moved out behind Guru ji.  Bhai Jodh Rai ji was with Guru ji.  Guru ji smiled and spoke with Bhai Jodh Rai ji.  It was like the Raghuvir Master, Ram Chander ji, mobilizing his army to attack Lanka.  It was like he was speaking to Raja Sugreev, the king of the Vaanars; as he spoke to Bhai Jodh Rai ji.

Guru ji reached Kangar quickly as it was only about 8 km away.  Bhai Jodh Rai ji’s home was huge.  Satguru ji saw it up close.  He noticed the highest elevation in the village and set up the Dhera there.  Bhai Jodh Rai ji’s wife got news of Guru ji’s arrival.  She was a fortunate and pious Sikh daughter of a great Sikh.  She came with faith and devotion.  She brought gifts and bowed to Guru ji’s feet, which relieved the bonds of birth and death.  Bhai Jodh Rai ji had the Dhera set up and made sure everything was taken care of by his servants.  His love and devotion for Guru ji grew by the day.  The love grew in his heart by itself.  He became a great Sikh in a few days of being with Guru ji.  Many new people became Sikhs in Kangar.  Guru ji interacted with Bhai Jodh Rai ji all day.  They stayed together and had many discussions.  They were all waiting for Baba Bidhi Chand ji to bring the second horse.  They were all waiting.  Guru ji said: “when Bidhi Chand ji brings the horse, the army of the Turks will come right after him.  A great battle will happen in which I will kill the enemy.”

7-34 Bhai Bidhi Chand ji as Ramli

Listen all the Katha of Baba Bidhi Chand ji as he went to get the second horse.  Listen with faith and devotion of how Guru ji made Baba ji do the impossible task.  Baba Bidhi Chand ji went towards Lahore.  He thought of many strategies on the way.  He reached Lahore in 3 days.  As he came close to the city gates, he said all of the names of the Gurus.  He did an Ardaas and bowed: “please stay by my side, Prabhoo.  Complete this task for me, quickly.”  Baba ji went inside the city.  He went to the Dharmsala there.  He met all the Sikhs and said: “Pairi Paina.”  He sat down and did Simran of the Satguru.  The Sikhs all came to bow to Baba Bidhi Chand ji and gave him a lot of respect.  The wise Baba Bidhi Chand ji had reached in the evening.  It soon became dark.  He asked how all the Sikhs were.  They all ate and then went to sleep.

As people had just gone to sleep, the royal announcers walked by, beating their drums.  Everyone woke up.  The announcer said out loud: “the horse of the Badshah is missing.  Whoever provides information, will be rewarded for whatever they ask for.  Whoever wants any tasks done, that will be completed.”  Baba Bidhi Chand ji asked the Sikhs in Lahore: “what is this announcer saying out loud?”  The Sikhs told Baba ji the whole story: “someone stole the horse of the Shah.  It has been 7 days since the horse has been missing.  They’ve been announcing this for about 4 days.  Everyone has looked but failed.  They keep saying: “a desireful reward will be given to whoever finds the horse.”  Baba Bidhi Chand ji heard this and thought to himself: “how should I plan for the second horse?  I can’t go as Kasera.  How can I be successful?  If I go at night, that can’t happen.  If I do get into the fort, I won’t come out alive.  There are thousands of soldiers on guard.  If I fight them, how many can I kill?  I will surely die.  The task won’t be a success this way.  If I get caught, that will be bad.  I will have to plan this well so the mission is a success.  Guru ji will bless me.  If the mission fails, I will die.  The task won’t be complete.  Guru ji will be blamed for this some how.  I need to think hard about this mission.  I need to take the horse easily.  I need to find a new disguise so that nobody recognizes me.  I will need to use my wisdom and go to the Turks.  The Badshah needs a detective.  He needs an astrologer or investigator.  They are announcing this everyday.  I will go as a Ramli astrologer from the East.  I will take the horse this way.”  Baba Bidhi Chand ji decided his plan and went to sleep.

Baba Bidhi Chand woke at Amritvela and did Simran of Guru.  He went to the Ravi and bathed.  He came back to the city by afternoon.  He sat a few hours at the Ravi before that and thought about his plan.  There was a Khatri Sikh named Bhai Bahora ji who was a “Bajaj,” a clothing merchant.  Baba Bidhi Chand ji went to Bhai Bahora ji’s home.  Bhai Bahora ji recognized Baba ji and was happy.  He got happy and bowed to him.  Baba ji bowed to Bhai Bahora ji as well.  The Khatri said with joy: “you are a great Sikh of the Guru.  You have blessed my home by coming here.”  He laid out a bed for him and had him sit with respect.  Bhai Bahora ji’s wife came and bowed.  The couple washed Baba ji’s feet with warm water.  They took the water and put it on their heads.  They sprinkled the water from Baba ji’s feet around their home.  They saw themselves as fortunate.  They served Baba ji by making food with 6 types of tastes.  They respected Baba ji and fed food to him.  Baba ji washed his hands after he was full.  Bhai Bahora ji said to Baba ji: “please let me know what I can do for you.  I will do what you need.  I see your Seva as the same as Guru ji’s Seva.  I will be blessed to serve you.  Don’t hold back.  You are a great beloved Sikh of the Guru.”  Baba Bidhi Chand ji saw the Sikh’s love and said: “I need clothes that Ramli astrologers wear in Hindustan.  Please have that made for me.  This is a good Seva for you.”  Bhai Bahora ji folded his hands and said: “I will have that made for you tomorrow.  You will get the Hindustani clothes.”  Everyone slept the night.

In the morning everyone woke up.  Bhai Bidhi Chand ji said: “I will tell you the type of clothes I need: it should be an expensive fine material.  It should be made of a soft cotton.  I need 3 kurtas made.  One should be long like the Irani style.  It should be close to the ground, past my knees.  The second should be above the knees.  The third should be the shortest, up to my waist.  The pajama should be wide-legged with Zarri borders.  It should be wide.  The lace to tie the pajama around the waist should be made of Zarri with golden tassels.  Have these prepared by evening.  I need a 12-yard Pugri.  It should be expensive with Zarri work on either end.  I need shoes with Zarri work.  The point of the shoe should be curled.  I am going to bathe now.  I’ll be back by the evening.  Please have this done by then.  Keep this a secret.”  Bhai Bahora ji said: “very well.  It will be done by evening.”  Baba Bidhi Chand ji took a big blanket to cover himself.  He went to the Ravi to bathe.

Baba Bidhi Chand ji went far along the Ravi to bathe.  He did Simran of Guru ji and read Gurbani by memory.  He stayed there for 9 hours.  He came back at 4 pm to Bhai Bahora ji’s home.  Bhai Bahora ji had Baba ji sit on a bed.  Bhai Bahora ji’s wife made food.  She had a lot of faith and love.  She brought out the food and Baba ji ate it.  By evening, the 3 Kurtas were made along with the Pajama.  The shoes and Pugri was made too.  Bhai Bahora ji gave the clothes to Baba ji.  Baba ji was happy and said: “a Sikh can only serve Sikhs.  Guru ji considers this received by him if a Sikh is served.  Guru ji sees the service for a Sikh as his own.  Guru ji is happy to see the love of the Sikh.  I need a metal chain pouch made.  Have this made by a blacksmith.  I need it by morning.  Don’t tell anyone else about this.”  Baba Bidhi Chand ji took the clothes and went to the Dharamsala.  He slept the night there.

At Amritvela he woke up and wore the new clothes.  He put oil in his hair and beard.  He combed his beard into two parts by splitting it in the middle.  He took one side of the beard and put it in his head.  He did the same for the other side.  His chin could be seen.  He curled his moustaches upwards.  He put the longest Kurta on first.  He then put the medium length one on top.  The shortest, waistcoat, was worn over that.  All 3 were worn.  He tied a high Pugri.  It was shaped like a shield.  He wore the wide pajama and tied the lace around the pajama, made of Zarri.  The shoes had a curl at the end.  He wore that.  He looked like an Eastern Hindustani.  As he sat, Bhai Bahora ji brought the metal chain pouch.  He hung it on to his front side.  He walked outside into the market.  He walked slowly so to get everyone’s attention.  He looked straight with confidence.  His back was straight and his nose was up.  He had a small cane in his hand.  People saw the unique person walking as they had never seen such an outfit before.  This outfit was worn by Ramlis in the east.  They all lined to see the person.  They said: “who is this person?  We have never seen him in our city before?”  One intrigued person came up to Baba ji and asked: “who are you and where are you from?”  Baba ji said: “we are Sahib-folk.  We are from a far away land.  We are very skilled.”  He spoke with confidence.  He was very convincing.  Baba ji walked towards the fort.  To see the new Sahib, many followed him.  Baba ji was tall.  He walked in a confident and straight way.  His neck was straight and he walked like a very proud person.

7-35 Bhai Bidhi Chand ji Arrives in the Darbar

In front of the door to the fort, there was a high wall.  The wise Baba Bidhi Chand ji sat on top of the wall with his new strategy.  Many wise people came to ask him questions.  Baba Bidhi Chandi ji said: “I am a great investigator, astrologer and skilled person.  If anyone has lost something, I can use Jyotish to find it.”  Some people asked about their lost things.  They wanted to know when and how they would find it.  Baba Bidhi Chand ji held his metal pouch and smelled it.  He said: “you received that item with a lot of effort and paid a lot of money for it.  Someone has taken that thing to a very difficult place.”  He was saying different things to different people.  People heard him and were amazed.  Baba Bidhi Chand ji spoke with confidence so people believed him.  His clothes were unique.  Some stood by for entertainment.  Some asked questions and some liked to see his clothes.  He was sitting on the wall and wanted to be known.  He caught everyone’s attention.  He put a small mirror in front of him.  He kept looking at his handsome face.  He kept checking his beard.  His beard was split in two like Rajasthani people.  He held his metal pouch and told people answers.

Saundha Khan’s employee came out and saw the crowd gathered around an interesting fellow sitting on top of a wall.  He came close and asked who the new person was.  He said: “who is this person with this new interesting type of clothes.”  Baba Bidhi Chand ji heard him and spoke for himself: “come here and I will tell you who I am.  My name is “Khoji Ganak.”  I live far away in Jungle Desh (Malva).  I wish to show my skills.”  The employee was amazed to hear this.  He noticed the person’s different talk and clothes and was impressed.  He said to Baba ji: “there was a horse of the Shah that has been stolen.  Some thief took it.  We have called many types of wise people but we couldn’t find the horse yet.  If someone tells us about our horse, the Badshah will reward them well.  If you have that skill, tell us where the horse is.  We will tell the Shah about you.”  Baba Bidhi Chand ji said: “I’m not like the average investigator who lies and guesses.  I will go where the horse was and smell the area.  I can give news of sky and the Patala.  I can find anything on the earth.  I can tell you where the thief came from and where it went.  Where the Emperor’s horse went, I can tell you everything.  I can tell you where the horse is.  Tell me where it was stolen from.  I will tell you everything.  Don’t trust me by my words.  See my skills for yourselves.  Don’t doubt me either.  There are many wise and great people in this world.  The world has all types of precious gems.  The wise people can find them.  The fools can’t.  Not everyone can find diamonds in mines.  Only the wise can.  I can tell you where the horse is but can’t bring the horse back to you.  I can tell you where the horse is.  The Emperor can use his strength to try and get it back.  Don’t blame me for anything.  I don’t take responsibility to bring it back.”  The employee believed him.

The employee told the Daroga: “listen Khan ji, a great investigator has come.  You were looking for such a person.  Khuddah sent him for us.  He is from a far away land.  He speaks and dresses differently.  He says “he finds things.”  He smells the area and can tell where the lost item is.  He wants to see where the other horse is standing.”  The Daroga heard this and became happy.  He got up and told the Badshah in the court.  He said: “you were looking for an investigator.  One has come all of a sudden.  He says he can see the area where the horse is standing and can tell where the other horse is.  He will smell the area and tell us.”  Shah Jahan got happy and said: “good!  Go and get him yourself.”

The Daroga took his employee and went to get the investigator.  They both went to the crowd.  Baba ji was sitting on the wall.  People listened to him.  Saundha Khan came close to the Hindustani and said: “oh Khoji, the Emperor wishes to see you.  Find his horse.”  Baba Bidhi Chand ji thought of Guru Hargobind Sahib ji and got happy.  He got up right away.  He went with the Daroga inside the fort.  He entered the court and stood in front of the Badshah.  Saundha Khan saluted the emperor.  Baba Bidhi Chand ji saluted the Emperor as well.  Guru ji’s Maya fooled everyone’s wisdom.  Nobody could recognize Baba Bidhi Chand ji as Kasera.  Kasera was the one who stayed there for many days.  He met and spoke with everyone during his time and took the horse.  No one could figure out that it was Kasera.  They were fools.  Baba Bidhi Chand ji stood with confidence.  The Shah said: “where do you live?  Where are you from?  What skill do you have?  What is your name?”  Baba ji spoke with patience and confidence: “I am from the Jungle Desh.  People call me “Khoji Ganak.”  I am famous because of my skill.  I look at the place, stars and astrology to see where the lost item is.  I know Jyotish as well.  I can smell the land and tell you where the lost item is and who has it.  I have learnt this skill.  I came to Lahore for the first time.  My relatives are jealous of me.  They took my land and assets.  I have many cousins.  I am an only child.  I am stressed by my cousins and uncles.  I am here to ask you for help.  I figured that you are good at delivering justice.  I will give you news of your lost horse.”  The Emperor thought the Ramli was skilled and true.  He was sure that this person would be able to find the horse.  He called for an expensive chola from the treasury and gave it to the Ramli as a token gift.  He said: “I will give you a lot of money if you tell me where the horse is.  When you tell me, I will give you Lakhs of Rajitpuns.”  Baba Bidhi Chand ji heard this and threw his metal pouch.  He put his ear to the ground.  It looked like he was bowing.  He was bowing toward the Guru and doing an Ardaas.  He asked for success.  Baba ji got up and used his thumb and fingers to count.  He counted on his right hand and then shook his head.  He then continued on the left hand.  He looked up and looked down.  He looked left and then right.  People thought that the investigator was trying to figure out where the horse was.  Baba ji put this drama on for a while.  The Badshah and his officers watched as Baba ji did his calculations.  Baba ji then said: “I have figured out where your horse is.  I just need to see the place where the horse was stolen from.  I want to see where the thief came from and took the horse.  I will tell you everything accurately then.  I will tell you the name of the thief and how he took it.  I have this much power.  I can’t bring the horse back, though.  You will have to do that.  You can fight with might to get it back or take it with ease.”  The Badshah was amazed.  He thought it was a miracle.  The Maya of the Guru was casted on the Emperor.  He couldn’t see the truth.  He said: “if you tell me about the horse, I will make you one of my officers.  I will give you 400,000 Rajitpuns for your skill.  Your relatives won’t be able to bother you anymore.  Tell me where the horse is.  I will get the horse back easily with my force.”  Baba Bidhi Chand ji said: “you are strong.  That I know.  But I want you to write this on a paper.  Write on a not that you really will give me all that.”  Baba ji folded his hands and said a prayer: “may the separated unite.”  He opened his eyes and told everyone in the court: “all of you should pray with me: that the two horses should meet again.  If you all pray, Khuddah will listen.  Khuddah lives within all of us.  All of the Qazis should pray that the two horses should meet again.  The more that pray, the better.  Khuddah will listen to you all.  May my wish be completed.  Pray to Khuddah.  Badshah!  Pray with me!”  All of the officers picked up their hands and prayed to Khuddah.  The Badshah wrote a promissory note to Baba Bidhi Chand ji: “if the horse is found, you will get the 400,000 Rajitpuns.  Tell me where the horse is.  I will make you an officer in my court.”  Baba Bidhi Chand ji said: “let’s go to the place where the horse was.  This metal pouch will tell you.  I will use my skills and calculations to tell you.  I will tell you where the horse is.  I will name the thief as well.  We are the Sikhs of the great Guru.  We don’t lie.  I am in front of the whole court of the Emperor.  I can’t lie.”  The Emperor was impressed.  He went with Baba ji to where the strong Gulbagh was tied.  The Daroga went as well.  Baba ji told the Badshah not to bring many people with them as the vibration will change for him to see.  Only 2 or 4 guards went with the Badshah.  They all entered the stable.
