6-6 The Battle at Logarh

Guru ji stayed in his place for some time and then had food.  He laid down to rest in the afternoon.  After getting up, Guru ji had consumed the Shaheedi Degh with joy and came into attention.  He washed up and got ready again.  He sat at Akaal Takhat as the celebration of the wedding was going on.  The stuff for the wedding was prepared by Mata Damodri ji and kept in the store room.  Mata ji was expecting the Bharaat in the morning but only the Guru truly knows the future.  Nobody else knew that the Turks were going to come and take the sweets.  Only Guru ji knew.

A Divaan was in session at Akaal Takhat.  The warriors were standing around.  The Raagis sang Shabads in various Raags.  The strong warriors came and sat down.  They had their weapons all fastened.  The So Dar Paath happened along with Keertan and Vaars.  When the recitation of Rehraas was complete, everyone bowed their heads and did Ardaas.  Guru ji went back to the home, where Gurduara Guru Ka Mahal is today.  The warriors went to their homes as well.  Everyone ate and went to sleep.

At around 10 pm, the Sikh from Lahore arrived.  He came to Guru ji’s home and told the guard: “I need to see Guru ji right away!  I have news for him.  Please call Guru ji quickly.  Consider the fact that the enemy will be here after me.”  The guard went inside the home and told Guru ji: “a letter has come from Lahore.  The Sikhs are telling us that a great army is coming.  I apologize that I had to wake you up, but the army is coming, killing people on the way.  The Sikh wants to meet you.”  Guru ji had the Sikh come in right away.  The Sikh from Lahore came and bowed to Guru ji.  The letter was read out to Guru ji.  Guru ji understood what was happening and told everyone to mobilize and get ready for battle.  Guru ji said: “send a message to the warriors at Logarh and tell them to stop the army.  Take a regiment there.”  Guru ji asked the Sikh from Lahore: “how far is the army?”  The Sikh folded his hands and said: “I set off as soon as the army started off.  I left at around 3 pm.  There are many thousands in the army.  They are many so they are coming slowly.  I came fast.  The royal army is coming soon.  They will be here before morning.  We shouldn’t waste any time.”  Guru ji was compassionate with the Sikh and blessed him for thinking what was best for the Guru’s home.

A Sikh from Logarh came to Guru ji and said: “a big army is headed this way.  We heard their noise from a distance.  We need to send bullets and gunpowder.  We should fight the first battle there.  If we would have had a canon, that would have been great.  We would have fired at them.  We would have stopped them.”  Guru ji heard this and said a command: “there is a tamarind tree which is old near the fort.  It is hollow from the inside.  Go and use it as a canon.  It will be a wooden canon.  Fire cannonballs at the army.”  The Sikh folded his hands and said: “where will be get the cannonballs and gunpowder for the canon?  How will we fire the wooden canon?  The Mughals aren’t deer that will fear our wooden canon, just making noise.”  Guru ji heard this and said: “fill the tree trunk with dirt, rocks and stones.  Say the name of Guru Nanak Dev ji and fire it.  Blow the army that’s coming.  I will be with you.  Listen to what I am saying with faith.  Fight with patience.”  The Sikh was happy.

The Sikh went to Logarh and took other Sikhs to find the old tamarind tree trunk.  They took it and set it up on the Logarh fort.  They put dirt and stones in the trunk.  They put some other substances and lit the canon after saying the name of the 6 Gurus.  The canon fired at midnight.  Dozens of horses and soldiers blew up.  The canon fired like a lightening bolt.  The Guru’s power was clearly seen.  The Sikhs in Logarh were amazed at the miracle.  They all praised the Guru’s impossible tasks, turning into reality.  Their faith in the Guru increased.  The stones clumped up into boulders when they were fired.  The Army of Mughlas Khan was surprised.  They didn’t expect such a big blow as they came with a treacherous plan.  They were surprised at how the Sikhs found out of their attack: “if these Sikhs didn’t fire a canon, we would have arrested them while they were asleep.  We wanted to arrest the Guru and take the Baaz by morning.  We wanted minimal damage and that’s why we came at night.  Our surprise attack didn’t work.  It seems that the Guru knew of our coming and that’s why the canon was fired.  We need to sound the Nagaras now as it is no use to come without noise.  We will now fight the Guru by announcing ourselves.”  The soldiers changed their plan of treachery and came into Bir Ras to fight head-on.

The Nagaras were sounded.  The warriors got ready and fought their way.  They fired their guns.  It was midnight and bullets were firing in Amritsar.  The dust flew by the steps of the horses.  Nothing could be seen, not even their own hand.  The canons fired and so did the rifles.  The only light that was seen was from the firing of the rifles.  Both sides aimed at the lighting of the rifles.  Both sides fired bullets.  They would fill their rifles and fire right after.  Loud noises came at once.  The Sikhs in Logarh shouted jaikaras.  They kept firing the wooden canons at the Mughal army.  They blew many of the soldiers by the boulders of stones and rocks.  Many Turks lost their lives.  They thought Guru Hargobind Sahib ji was fighting himself.  The officers said: “go and attack!  The Guru has a small army.  We can take the fort and arrest the Guru.”  The soldiers heard the orders and attacked Logarh.  A lot of bullets and arrows were fired.  A big army came to surround Logarh.  They ran around the fort but they couldn’t see anything due to the dust flying.  A battle started at Logarh with the sounds of the bullets firing.  The bullets fired like popcorn popping.

Guru ji heard the sounds of the battle in his home.  Guru ji knew that the army of the Mughals was big.  Guru ji came out of his home and fastened his weapons.  The warriors came in front of Guru ji and bowed to him.  They all spoke with pride: “what’s the wait?  Command us!  We will kill the Mughals by your blessing.”  Guru ji called the generals inside the house to speak to them alone.  Painday Khan was the strongest.  There was no other, stronger than him.  Bhai Bidhi Chand ji, the warrior saint, was called inside as well.  Baba Bidhi Chand ji was a clever and strategic warrior.  He knew how to use different strategies and cheat the enemy into defeating them.  Bhai Mohan ji, Bhai Gopal ji, Bhai Navlu ji, Bhai Nihaal ji; these were clever and wise warriors.  They were expert marksmen.  They wouldn’t let an enemy go alive.  Bhai Pirana ji, with a long beard, was expert at using the spear.  He was amazing at using his sword as well.  These warriors were ready ever since they heard about the battle.  They were eagerly waiting for war.  Bhai Jait ji and Bhai Jaati Malik ji (son of Bhai Sangho Purohit ji) could collect many bodies like a garland, with their arrows.  Many other warriors came to fight.  They were all with Guru ji.

Guru ji met with them all to discuss the battle strategy.  The other soldiers waited outside on their horses.  Their rifles were loaded and ready to fire.  Gunpowder packages were ready.  Some had double barrels and some had singe barrels.  They were all carrying their guns.  Guru ji looked towards his generals and had them sit with respect.  To respect the generals before a battle was an old tradition of Kings.  Guru ji said to them: “warriors, the time has come for war.  What is your strategy?  We shouldn’t fight close to home where Harmandhir Sahib ji is.  Let’s go outside of the city.  Let’s stand in the middle of the field near Logarh.  We will stop the enemy there.  It is really dark.  Nothing can be seen.  The enemy came all of a sudden.  We don’t want the enemy to come to our homes.  In the dark, one does not know the difference between friend or foe.  We don’t want to kill our own.  We don’t want our people to be surrounded.  We won’t be able to win if we separate.  It is a sin to fight in the city.  I think we should fight outside of the city.  We should fight them on our horses.  We should not get caught in their traps.”  Painday Khan heard this and said: “this is good.  Pitha ji, what you are saying is what everyone wants.  Let’s think about the family first.  It is important to protect them first.  Let’s take them out first.  The Mata jis and Bibi Veero should be taken first.  The other women of the city should join them.  The warriors will stay back and fight.  Let’s not think about our household items.  Let’s collect them and get them out.  The other women should go with them along with 100 warriors.  The rest should stay and fight with the enemy.  We will fire our guns.  If we get lost while fighting, we can go to where the families are.  Bhai Navla ji should be the commander, sent with the family.”  Guru ji liked this idea.  He made Bhai Navla ji the commander and gave him a regiment to go along with the families.  The families were all collected and taken out of Amritsar headed to Chabaal.  Everyone was given hope as they left.

6-7 The Battle at Logarh – Bibi Veero gets left behind

Guru ji sent Bhai Navla ji with a message for all of the Sikh families: “there should be about 25 fearless warriors at the Logarh Qila.  They are fighting fiercely there, stopping the enemy in its tracks.  Their guns and canons are making really loud noises.  They are not letting the enemy advance; everyone can hear the noises.  How long can they hold them off though?  The Badshah’s army is really big.  They will eventually reach the city.  We should be ready for them.  It is the dark phase of the moon.  It is a very dark night.  There is a lot of dust from the horses’ feet.  Everyone should stay in groups and gather in one place.  Don’t separate from each other.  When the sun comes up, we will kill the enemy Turks.”  The warriors heard Guru ji’s word and roared: “Paatshaah ji, we have received strength from your power.  This army is nothing in front of us.  With your blessing, we can kill them and go to Lahore.  If Shah Jahan goes into the fort, we will arrest him too.  When our magnificent swords shine, then you will see the great battle done by your Sikhs.”  Satguru ji sent another Sikh to go to his home.  He said to him: “tell the women to not think about the wealth or items of the home.  Leave all the items where they are and leave the home.  Take the family and leave this area.  Go towards Ramsar.  The warriors will stay with them.  All of the families should be there.  Don’t be the first to fire any bullet.  Go quietly so the enemy doesn’t know where you are.”

The Sikh quickly went to the Guru’s home.  He made preparations to leave with Mata Damodri ji.  Everyone had already figured out what was going, hearing the loud noises of the battle.  They had already started to leave.  One Sikh went to Mata Kaulan ji’s home.  A message was sent to Mata Kaulan ji to leave the home.  The Sikh went to her and said: “don’t pick up any household items and leave quickly.  The enemy has attacked.”  In the Guru’s home, the chariots and palanquins were ready.  Everyone mounted them and left.  Mata Damodri ji was really upset.  A big obstacle came before the daughter’s wedding.  She was thinking: “what should I pick up and what should I leave behind?”  She was afraid of Guru ji’s command and so, she left everything.  The warriors took all of the older Sahibzadas (the Guru’s son) and carried them on their horses.  The house was filled with things.  It was a huge house.  They all had to leave everything.  Mata Damodri ji got on her chariot.  Mata Marwahi ji (Mata Mahadevi ji was her real name; Marwaha was her paternal clan’s name) got on another chariot.  Mata Nanaki ji took Guru Tegh Bahadhur Sahib ji and got into a palanquin.  The servants and maids all left with them, quickly.  Everyone was in danger.  It was a dark night.  The roads could not be seen.  They all travelled towards Ramsar.  They all travelled by holding each other.  The trees were very dense in that area.  There were many bushes along the way.  The road was narrow.  It was a dirt road.  The families reached Ramsar.  The Sikhs were with them.  Bhai Navla ji was the commander.  Mata Kaulan ji also arrived and met the other mothers.  The Guru’s family was together.

Guru Hargobind Sahib ji got news that the families had all reached Ramsar.  Guru ji got ready and went to Akaal Takhat.  He bowed at the Darshani Deodi and mounted his horse.  He did the Parkarma of the Sarovar on his horse and came to the Dukhbhanjani Beri.  It was around 2:30 am.  The battle had been on for about 3 hours.  Guru ji stood at the Beri and said: “half of you should stay on your horses.  The other half should bathe.  Once they’re done, the others should bathe.”  Guru ji bathed himself and wore his clothes.  He came to the Darshani Deodi and bowed there.  He went inside the Harmandhir Sahib and bowed by folding his hands.  He got up in front of the army and did an Ardaas by saying the names of the Gurus: “Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is the Jot who is always with his Sikhs.  The Sikhs who remember Guru Nanak Dev ji with devotion and focus, their problems are destroyed.  He makes the enemy go away and saves his servants.  Oh master of the universe, Prabhoo ji, you are omnipotent.  Give your Sikhs victory.  Your words are like the arrows of Ram Chander ji.  They never miss.  Guru Angad Dev ji, you are the moon of your family.  I bow to you with my hands folded.  You are the destroyer of the greatest obstacles.  We seek your protection.  You are the friend of the poor.  You are the treasure of virtue and the giver of Mukti.  You show everyone the path to Mukti.  You are praised greatly and you love the hard work of your servants.  Your powers are unlimited.  You can tolerate your own powers and keep them hidden.  This is how you are.  Oh house of joy, bless your Sikh with victory.  May we destroy the enemy on the battlefield.  The leader of the Bhallas, Guru Amardas ji, there is no other donor like you.  Everyone asks from you.  You made 22 Manjhis and blessed many of your servants.  Many bow towards you with desires of wishes in their hearts.  You fulfill their wishes.  You only see love and give your Sikhs Mukti.  Give us the gift of victory.  We want to defeat the enemy.  The fourth Guru, Guru Ramdas ji is praised in the world.  You are under the spell of love.  You are generous.  You are benevolent.  You are detached from Maya.  You are victorious against your desires.  You are the Sat, Chit and Anand form.  Whoever bows to your feet, they are blessed.  I bow to your feet everyday.  Everyday I bow to your feet.  Your glory is spread throughout the world.  There is none other like you.  Your servants bow to you.  I fold my hands.  Your grandson asks you for victory.  Give me victory.  Guru Arjan Dev ji fulfills the wishes of his servants and destroys fear.  You are the form of Sri Bhagwant.  You protect the ones who come to your shelter.  You give them Mukti.  You protect the saints.  You are benevolent and patient.  You give hope to all.  You are the protector in every dimension.  You save your servants.  We have seen your glory.  Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji, you give Mukti to your Sikhs.  Your son bows to your feet.  I ask for the boon of victory.  The enemy that has come to Amritsar, may I defeat them all.”

When this Ardaas was done by Guru Hargobind Sahib ji inside Harmandhir Sahib, a voice was heard: “kill all of the Turks!  You are starting the first battle.  This the first of many battles to come for the Khalsa.  These battles will last for a long time.  Slowly, the roots of the Turks will be pulled.  You will be victorious and the enemy will run.  Be fearless and strike your weapons.  Kill the impure army.  Take your victory.”  Guru Hargobind ji heard this voice and bowed his head with his hands folded.  It was the voice of Akaal Purakh, it was the Akaash Vaani.  Guru ji was in joy.  He came outside and came to the Parkarma.  He did 4 Parkarmas and bowed his head.  He came to the Darshani Deodi and bowed again.

Guru ji called for his strong steed.  A Sikh came with the horse and Guru ji mounted it.  He took his fierce bow and put it on his shoulder.  The horse was worth more than 100,000 Rajitpuns.  It was a smart horse.  He could feel the wish of Guru ji.  He moved by Guru ji’s wishes.  Guru ji took a regiment and got ready for battle.  He was ready for war.  The family had left for Ramsar.  Guru ji went to Ramsar first.  He counted everyone.  Everyone was there, except for one person.  Bibi Veero was not there!  She was missing.  Everyone else was there.

Bibi Veero ji was busy collecting her dolls.  She got left behind.  The daughter that was kept with great care, she got left behind.  Everyone quickly made plans to rescue her.  Mata Damodri ji had thought that Bibi Veero ji was with one of the other mothers.  In this confusion, she got left behind.  Mata Damodri ji said: “who will bring her back, putting their own life in danger?”  Bhai Babak ji and Bhai Singha Purohit ji had the skill of firing arrows without looking, the skill that Ram Chander ji had.  Guru ji said to Bhai Singha Purohit ji: “take Bhai Babak ji and bring Bibi Veero here.  Your life will be a success by doing this.”  The Sikhs obeyed Guru ji’s command and picked up their rifles.  They thought of Guru Nanak Dev ji and rode off towards the home.  They wanted her to be safe.  Guru ji gave his own Simrani mala (small mala) to Bhai Singha Purohit ji and said: “Bibi Veero ji will know that you were sent by me if you show her this.  She is trained to not go with strangers.  If you are faced with a fight, fire your bullets and I will send some of the warriors to you, without delay.  Don’t get caught.  Be alert.  Use tactics to come back.  The soldiers are ready.  They will come quickly.”  The two Sikhs headed towards Guru ji’s home.  Guru Hargobind Sahib ji was waiting at Ramsar with the whole family.

6-8 Bringing Bibi Veero ji

Satguru ji and the family had left their home.  A fierce battle was taking place at Logarh.  The Turk army had attacked.  Many rifles were being fired at once.  There was a lot of killing at Logarh.  Canons were fired.  The Sikhs were surrounded by the Turk army.  The wall of the fort was small and there was no other cover.  The Sikhs fought for about 5 hours.  The enemy came close.  The 25 Sikhs achieved martyrdom in front of the 7,000 army.  They had to do hand-to-hand combat when their bullets finished.  They killed many of the enemy before falling themselves.  They did not back down.  The Logarh Qila was taken by the Mughals.  It was a dark night.  The Turks realized that there was no one left at the Qila.

The Mughal Army headed towards Guru ji’s home.  Some soldiers headed towards Amritsar.  Guru ji’s home was empty.  The soldiers noticed it was empty.  They looted the store rooms, where the sweets and pakvaans were stored for the wedding.  The soldiers ate all of the food as they were hungry.  Guru ji’s curse came to reality.  The soldiers hadn’t eaten since leaving Lahore.  They ate the food and were happy.  They said to each other: “eat this and give it to the others.”  The soldiers looked around and said: “the Guru is not here.  He has left the home along with his family.  Loot all of his belongings in the home.”  The soldiers went through the whole city but they couldn’t find Guru ji.  They looted all of the homes.  They were happy that they didn’t have to fight.  They thought they won without fighting.  The fools did not know that their death was coming in the morning.  They were only alive till morning.  The army spread out throughout Amritsar.  In the dark, nothing could be seen.  They shouted out loud to talk to each other.  Many soldiers walked around the city.  The two warriors of the Guru: Bhai Babak ji (the Keertani and Marksman) and Bhai Singha Purohit ji (the Purohit of the Sodhis), who had the skill of shooting arrows without looking (known as Shabad-bhedi vaan), had come into the area of the Guru’s home.  They were in Bir Ras.  They went to the home of Guru ji.

Bibi Veero ji was wondering what would happen to her.  She was hiding and thinking about what she should do.  In that time, Bhai Singha ji came into the home and called out to her: “Bibi Veero ji, come quick!  Guru ji is calling you.  Why are you sitting inside?”  Bibi Veero ji heard the voice but she did not trust it.  She was afraid that it may have been the enemy.  She responded to the voice: “who are you?  I won’t come out till you tell me who you are.  I won’t open the door.  I will stay here and give me life.  I will never go to the enemy.”  Bhai Singha Purohit ji flashed Guru ji’s mala to her.  Bibi Veero ji saw the Simrani and got happy.  She saw her father’s mala and came out of the room.  The two warriors took her on their horses and rode off to Ramsar.  They rode slowly, as to avoid suspicions.  The Turks were all around.  They were running around like fools.  They walked till the edge of the Sarovar.

One of the Mughals tied his horse near the Darshani Deodi.  He walked around the edge of the Sarovar.  Bhai Babak ji and Bhai Singha ji rode their horses slowly.  The Mughal saw them and shouted: “who are you?”  Bhai Babak ji responded: “I am your brother, don’t worry.  Guard the place well.  We are trying find the Guru just like you.  Have you seen him yet?”  They spoke like this and passed Akaal Takhat.  When they passed the Mughal, who was standing with a spear in his hand, Bhai Singha Purohit ji thought to himself: “the army has reached Harmandir Sahib.  We shouldn’t fight here.”  Bhai Singha ji rode faster.  When the horse ran with some speed, Bibi Veero ji’s anklets clanked.  The Turks suspected a woman going by when they heard this.  The Turk yelled out: “come quickly!  The Guru’s family is here.  The enemy is deceiving us and getting away.  The Guru is taking his family.  If we want to get the Baaz, find the Guru first, otherwise they will run away and meet their people.”  When the foolish Turk yelled out like this, he began to chase Bhai Singha ji.  He yelled out: “I won’t let you go!  I can see the two of you on the horse.  I won’t let you go.”  The Mughal readied his spear to throw at Bhai Singha ji.  He rode his horse faster.  Bhai Singha ji said: “Bhai Babak ji, hurry up!  What are you waiting for?  What are you looking it?  The enemy is coming towards me.  I have another person on my horse.  You should take your gun and shoot the one chasing me.  Kill him now!  Don’t worry about anyone else.”  Bhai Babak ji’s gun was ready.  He heard the Turk’s horse riding and aimed.  It was dark.  He aimed towards the noise and said: “hold on there.  You won’t survive now!”  The Turk brought his spear close and wanted to strike.  Bhai Babak ji fired his riffle and shot the Turk in the chest.  The Turk screamed in pain and fell off his horse.  It was like a lion killing an elephant; like lightening destroying a minaret.  It was like a tree being pulled from the roots.  Blood flowed from the Turk’s chest as he fell near the Sarovar.  His horse ran away.  He yelled in pain as he died.

Bhai Babak ji and Bhai Singha ji rode fearlessly towards Ramsar.  The enemy was too far.  They had escaped.  Guru ji was focused on this mission.  He heard the sound of a rifle being fired.  He said to the warriors: “go and find out what happened.  Make sure the 2 warriors don’t get caught.  The Turks are everywhere now.”  Bhai Painday Khan ji heard this and rode off.  He met Bhai Babak ji and Bhai Singha ji.  They had their guns ready.  Bhai Painday Khan ji had his regiment.  They said to each other: “we were successful.”  They came to Guru ji and Guru ji said to them: “good work!  You will be blessed.  Guru Nanak Dev ji will be with you all the time.”  There was only 3 hours till sun up.  Guru ji knew that a fight was going to happen now.  He decided to send the families away from Amritsar: “go from here now and head towards Goindwal.  Reach Chabaal by morning.  It is 21 km from here.  Only the warriors should stay.  Today is the day of Veero’s wedding.  Go to Chabaal and do the wedding.  Take the Masands and buy ghee, sugar and other foods.  Buy it all and make preparations for the wedding.  Don’t worry about anything else.  This is they way it was supposed to be.  Parmeshwar wanted it this way.  I will reach by the time of the wedding.  The Pheray will happen in Chabaal.  The whole family and Bharaatis will eat there.  We will have to do everything from the beginning there.  Go and eat there.”  Guru ji then said to Mata Kaulan ji: “go to Kartarpur and live there.  I will come and see you there, you won’t be able to stay here now.  There will be a big battle here.  Many will die.  I will come quick.”  Bibi Kaulan ji bowed to Guru ji.  She had some people with her and headed towards Kartarpur.  She was worried about Guru ji as she travelled.  She waited for him in Kartarpur.

Mata Damodri ji and the family headed towards Chabaal.  They were all upset and worried.  Mata Damodri ji was worried that Guru ji was going to war.  She was taking deep breaths.  They reached Chabaal by morning on their chariots and carts.  The sun came up.

When the family had left, Guru ji spoke to the warriors: “some of you should go and guide the Bharaatis and tell them not to go to Amritsar.  Take them to Chabaal instead.”  The Sikhs heard this and found the Bharaatis on the way to Amritsar.  In this way, Guru ji was now worry-free.  He was ready to fight.  The warriors were ready to fight.  They wanted to destroy the Turks.

6-9 Battle of Logarh

The Family had been sent to Chabaal.  Guru ji got ready for war.  The warriors were without any doubts.  They were filled with Bir Ras and anger.  The warriors were ready to clash with each other.  There was little light now as the night was breaking into the day.  The visibility got better.  Guru ji motivated the undefeated warriors: “go and fight!  Fight with Bir Ras and anger!”  The warriors heard Guru ji and went forward.  Bhai Bhanu ji was the commander.  He took a regiment and headed towards the army.  They had their rifles.  The Nagaras rang.  It could be heard for miles.  The enemy heard it and it made their hearts tremble.  The two sides saw each other, face-to-face.  The warriors’ eyes were red and their moustaches were up.  They fired their rifles at the enemy.  Loud noises could be heard with shouting of “kill them!”   It was a fierce attack.  The army was surprised.  They thought the Guru had run away.  They didn’t expect this attack.  The enemy that was looting the homes and eating the food, were sitting and laying on the beds.  They were relaxed.  Some went to sleep.  When Bhai Bhanu ji’s regiment attacked, the Nagara rang, the enemy got up and came to war.  They said: “the Guru did not leave!  We are being attacked.  He came with his men.  Get ready and attack.”

The warriors mounted their horses.  They left the city and came to the battlefield.  They grabbed their swords and spears.  They came to where the Nagara was playing.  There was enough light to fight.  They could see far into the distance.  The Khans and the Sikhs were in front of each other.  The bullets were flying.  Many of the enemy fell to the ground.  They loaded their rifles again and fired.  The lava had sprouted from the volcano.  The riffles made noise.  The metal clashed.  The limbs began to fall.  The warriors fell to the ground.  They would spin around before falling.  Many fell to the ground.  There was blood everywhere.  Horses died.  They ran to the field to kill each other.  The Mughals were stopped in their tracks.  They saw the awesome force of the Guru’s army.  Guru ji did not let the enemy step forward.  They couldn’t come ahead.  The enemy felt a strong blow to their faces.  It was a fierce battle.  The field was where Pipli Sahib near Khalsa College Amritsar is today till pass the point of Gurduara Shaheeda Sahib (in the present).  The battlefield was wide.

Bhai Bhanu ji caused a great charge.  It was an intense fight.  The Turks couldn’t move forward.  They charged on their horses.  The warriors defended their bodies and fired at each other.  They moved around.  The Guru’s warriors came into Bir Ras and charged ahead.  They fired their rifles.  Many men fell to the ground.  They were injured.  The warriors came into close contact and sliced each other.  When the battle got intense, Mughlas Khan knew he had to attack harder.  He had heard of the Guru’s strength but now he saw it.  He thought to himself: “him and his people are fighting hard.  They’re not backing down.”  He called his generals and spoke to them with respect: “attention Khans!   Don’t back down.  Fight hard.  The Guru doesn’t have a big army.”  He sent his generals to attack.  They came with their rifles and attacked where Bhai Bhanu ji was fighting.  Shamas Khan fired his rifle.  Many Khans were with him.  The warriors shot bullets and broke each other’s limbs.  Shamas Khan faced Bhai Bhanu ji.  They challenged each other and shot bullets at each other.  Many were injured.  There were loud noises.  The warriors shouted.  The warriors fell like minarets breaking after being hit by lightening.  The injured fell to the ground and looked like they were intoxicated with cannabis.  The Turks attacked hard with their bullets.  Some struck with their spears.  Some released arrows.  The swords were unsheathed.  They struck each other and sliced through the chainmail.  The warriors were drenched in their red blood.  It looked like they wore red clothes.  The blood mixed into the ground, making red mud.  The bodies piled up on the ground.  The warriors and horses died of the bullets.  Many duels happened.  Many charges happened.  Bhai Bhanu ji said to his men: “The Guru is with you.  Don’t be scared.  Attack with all your might.  Kill them.  The enemy won’t survive.  The Guru is with us.  Attack hard.  They will run away.  Play the Nagaras.  Go ahead and fight.”  Bhai Bhanu ji attacked hard with his men.  Where Shamas Khan was, Bhai Bhanu ji attacked there.  Many limbs were being cut.  The Khans were being killed.  Many of their men ran back, seeing the fierce attack.  The Sikhs chased the ones running away.  They released many arrows.

Mughlas Khans saw his men running back.  He then sent Anwar Khan, saying to him: “what happened to Shamas Khan?  He was ready to attack and now he’s coming back.”  Anwar Khan got ready and yelled to Shamas Khan: “why aren’t you attacking?  The Sikhs are coming.  Think about your honor.  We don’t back down.  People will make fun of us for losing to a Sadhoo Fakir.”  Shamas Khan stopped.  Mughlas Khan continued: “you are a great warrior.  Why are you coming back?”  Shamas Khan pulled his sword and turned around.  He attacked the Sikhs like a lion.  He cut many men.  He was great at the skill of Patta.  He cut the people without fear.  His sword was fast.  Many warriors fell.  Bhai Bhanu ji saw Shamas Khan attacking hard.  Bhai Bhanu ji loaded his rifle.  He aimed at Shamas Khan.  He rode his horse and shot his riffle.  The rifle fired like a lightening bolt.  The bullet hit the horse’s forehead.  The horse fell ahead.  Shamas Khan jumped off his horse before it fell.  He continued fighting on foot.  He swung his sword like lightening.  Bhai Bhanu ji tried to kill him but did not succeed.  Shamas Khan was a skilled warrior.  Everyone watched their battle.  They struck each other while defending each other’s strikes.  They were like Bazighars, acting out a play.  Whoever came near them, was struck down.  Bhai Bhanu ji got angry.  He missed every strike.  He got off his horse and stood in front of Shamas Khan with great courage.  He took his sword and shield.  He yelled out: “I won’t let you leave now.  You killed many of my men.  I am here to take their revenge.  I will kill you.”  Shamas Khan heard this and got angry.  He said: “you are an uncivilized, unskilled vulture.  You are a coward.  I will take revenge for my horse.  I am a Pathaan.”  They both came closer.  Shamas Khan swung his sharp sword with all his might.  It was blocked by Bhai Bhanu ji’s shield.  The sword hit the shield’s “phull” (boss).  As the Faulaad sword hit straight on, it broke.  Bhai Bhanu ji got his chance and pounced with his sword like a lion.  It was like a cheetah pouncing.  He did the “Janyow Vaar” (striking diagonally on the shoulder) with his sword.  The sword came out from the right side of the waste.  He sliced Shamas Khan into two pieces, killing him with one strike.

The enemy saw their general fall and got angry.  They all attacked all of a sudden onto Bhai Bhanu ji with arrows and spears.  Anwar Khan took his men and attacked.  Bhai Bhanu ji did not back down.  He faced them all and stopped the strikes.  Anwar Khan stabbed his spear but Bhai Bhanu ji cut the spear with his sword.  Many Turks were killed by Bhai Bhanu ji.  The enemy got scared and backed down.  Bhai Bhanu ji was filled with Bir Ras.  He stayed and fought.  The Turks shot two bullets and struck Bhai Bhanu ji in the forehead.  He attained martyrdom while standing.

Shamas Khan had died along with many of his men.  Bhai Bhanu ji died as well.  They all went to the dimension of the Devatas.  The Devatas showered flowers on them.  Bhai Bhanu ji went to Sach Khand.

6-10 Ali Mohammed/ Singha Purohit Dies

The commanders of both sides had died.  The enemy attacked harder.  Both sides were fighting with all their strength.  Warriors from both sides came, striking weapons, nobody backed down.  Heads rolled; bodies piled up; many died; limbs were cut; legs were cut; nobody backed down.  They fought without limbs.  They were in Bir Ras.  They fought till their last breath.  They fell on the ground after many wounds.  They said to each other: “where are you going?  Come fight!”  Their arms were cut but they fought with one arm.  Some fought with one leg.  Shoulders were cut.  They challenged each other.  Stomachs were cut.  The intestines came out.  They fell to the ground.  They fought bravely.  Both sides lost brave warriors.  They didn’t let their anger calm down.

The generals found out that Shamas Khan was killed.  Mughlas Khan was told of this.  Mughlas Khan sent the Syed regiment.  There was a warrior named Ali Mohammed there.  He took 1,000 soldiers and reached where the corpse of Shamas Khan was.  He saw his body split in two.  Many Nagaras were played loud.  Rifles were fired.  Horses ran.  The Sikhs counter-attacked, seeing the enemy come.  They came like a tsunami.  The Mughals yelled: “kill them!”  Many bullets were fired.  Rifles were fired.  Many Sikhs died.  They began to move back.  They couldn’t stay standing.  They moved back, facing the 1,000 soldiers.  Only a few survived.  Many died.  They fought with anger.  Nobody left the field.  They fought bravely.  One warrior came with a horse.  He came to Guru ji and said: “it’s a fierce battle.  Many have died.  Only a few have survived.  The enemy is in great numbers, that have come.  We can’t hold the enemy there.  I come with this report.”  Guru Hargobind ji heard this and said: “take more warriors and win the sinners.  Fight with courage.  The Guru is with you.”

Bhai Singha Purohit ji was sent with 500 Sikhs.  The north part of Amritsar, which was at a higher elevation, many Sikhs were dying there.  Bhai Singha Purohit ji went to see the situation there.  He showered a rain of bullets there.  The two forces faced each other like two rivers coming to meet each other.  The sun was fully up by this time.  The rifles were fired loud.  Many crows and vultures shrieked in the sky.  They came to eat the flesh.  The Kaljognis came to eat the flesh and drink the blood.  They burped after eating.  Mohammed Ali brought his soldiers and fought.  Many died from both sides.  They all shouted their Jaikaras: “Ya Ali!  Sat Sri Akaal!”  The warriors got hit with bullets and fell to the ground.  The Pathaans attacked hard.  The Mughals ran with Bir Ras.  Mohammed Ali spoke with pride: “these Sikhs are nothing.  Kill them.  You are Pathaans.  Make them run from the filed.  The sun is up.  You can see them now.”  The Pathaans charged hard in great anger.  They attacked the Sikhs with their swords and shields.  The swords flashed; the riffles spat out fire.  The warriors advanced and the fairies of heaven were impressed.  The Apsaras took the dead warriors to marry them in heaven.  The horses stepped on the warriors’ bodies.  They fell over each other.  The weapons clashed and broke.  The Guru’s army attacked hard.  They said: “don’t let them get away!”  A great battle was happening.  Many died.  Bhai Singha Purohit ji called to his warriors in a loud voice: “look at these impure Mughals.  Kill them all at once.  Fire your rifles together.”  They all charged hard.  The Nagaras sounded with the conches and other horns.  Raag Maaroo was heard from the horns.  They all yelled: “kill them!”  The warriors fought and did not back down.  The Sikhs fired their riffles at once and then attacked with their swords.  They cut the enemy.  Many fell to the ground.  Both sides lost many men.  The Sikhs fought with anger.  Bhai Singha ji saw all this.  He challenged many to fight.  Bhai Singha ji was the Brahmin warrior of the Guru.  He was skilled in many types of educations.  He knew the Vedas, Shastras and Shastervidya.  He released many arrows.  The Guru’s radiance made sure the arrows hit the enemy.  His arrows went through people.  They flew like a cobra.  He was the form of Bir Ras.  He killed many.  Both sides had many killed.  The dead looked like tired people sleeping.  The Turks were killed.  Mohammed Ali got angry seeing his people die.  He said: “I am still standing.  Why are you running away?  What will people say?”  He rode his horse and stopped his people from running.  Bhai Singha ji was releasing many arrows.  Mohammed Ali saw him and wanted to kill him.  He came in front of Bhai Singha ji.  When Bhai Singha ji saw him and noticed he was going to fire his rifle at him.  Bhai Singha ji made his horse run to where Ali Mohammed was.  He released arrows from his horse as he rode.  Mohammed Ali aimed at Bhai Singha ji and fired.  The bullet hit Bhai Singha ji’s horse.  Bhai Singha ji fell from his horse as it tumbled.  The Turks were happy to see the commander of the Sikhs fall.  Bhai Singha ji jumped up and steadied his bow.  He released many arrows.  The Turks surrounded Bhai Singha ji.  Bhai Singha ji did not stop firing.  He killed anyone that came close.  His arrows would go right through the enemy’s bodies.  He fired quickly.  He was not a coward.  Mohammed Ali came and challenged him.  He said: “I will kill him.  I won’t let him go.”  He aimed at Bhai Singha ji.  Pandit ji let an arrow go towards Mohammed Ali.  As Mohammed Ali was about to fire, the arrow came and hit him in the forehead.  His skull exploded like a big watermelon.  The rifle was left unfired in his hands.  Mohammed Ali fell to the ground.  His horse left him.  He was the second Mughal commander to be killed.  Bhai Singha ji did not back down.  The Turks all charged at him and fired their bullets and arrows, all at once.  They charged at him yelling: “kill him!”  Bhai Singha ji was on the ground but did not go back.  Many Turks struck Bhai Singha ji.  His body was being cut but he did not back down.  His limbs were cut and he was being mixed into the field.  He did not stop fighting till his breath was still running.  He achieved martyrdom along with other Sikhs.  The enemy fought hard.  The Sikhs were being pushed back.  The battle was fierce.  Guru ji found out of what happened.  When Guru ji heard about Bhai Singha ji, he came into the Bir Ras and got ready to go to the battlefield himself.  In this way, the fierce battle continued.  Thousands of warriors died.  Guru Hargobind Sahib ji was getting ready to go to war.
