6-36 Karam Chand Captured and Released
Many Nagaras sounded. 10,000 men were coming to attack now, with the combined regiments. They all charged at once. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji saw the army coming. Bhai Piraga ji was with Bhai Bidhi Chand ji. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji said to him: “go to Guru ji, quickly. Tell him that the whole army is coming now. They are going to use their full strength. Abdul Khan is coming himself at the back. Their Nishan Farlas are unfurled. They want to finish the battle. The Turks are coming to their death. The dust has covered the sky like black clouds. Go and tell Satguru ji all this. A fierce battle will happen now. Ask him what is his wish. We will kill the Turks in that way.” Bhai Piraga ji went to Guru ji with the news. He took 10 men with him.
Where Sri Guru Hargobind ji, the warrior, was standing, Bhai Piraga ji came and bowed to him with his hands folded. He told him the news: “Abdul Khan is coming himself now. He is bringing his whole army. The army is like black clouds coming. Please shower your arrows now so they can be like wind, destroying these clouds.” Guru ji heard this and called for water. He washed his hands and feet. He got ready. He pulled his moustache up and fixed his beard. He wore new clothes. He had a beautiful Kalgi on top of the Jigha with diamonds. His radiance was great. He had a Chanderhans with him and put it in his Gatra. His quiver was made of ivory along with precious gems. He put sharp arrows in it. He inspected the Khapra arrows which were 4 fingers thick. They were like cobras. He hung the quiver on his shoulder. He hung a big shield on his other shoulder. He tied it on the back. His bow was really thick. There was gold on the bow. When the sun shined on it, it looked really bright. The string was wound around the thick top limb of the bow. The craftsmen were instructed by Guru ji while this bow was made. The bow was fierce. Nobody else could pull the string on it. The Tonkas of the bow could not be measured. There was no other person in the world who could pull this string. This was the strong bow of the Guru. He took this bow in his hand. The arrow tips were really thick and sharp. They were adorned with the Kankh bird feathers on the back. They would fly like the wind. They flew like snakes. It would kill many along its path. Guru ji got ready to fight. He had his Khanjar and Jamdad in his Kumerkassa. A loaded pistol was with him. He commanded: “bring me my horse.” The Sevadaar brought Guru ji’s decorated horse. The saddle had diamonds with precious gems in it. It was a beautiful saddle. The horse came, moving its tail. Its neck was high. The steps of the horse would make potholes. The horse was black and had golden jewellery on it. The horse was like a proud elephant. The horse would chew the reins in its mouth. The horse looked like an elephant calf. It was really strong. It was able to trample over many on the field. Its chest was wide. It was agile. It ran with Guru ji’s mind’s instructions. The horse was a tapasvi from its past lives that wanted to be a horse for Parmeshwar. He came as a horse to be Guru ji’s mount. Guru ji said: “Vahiguru,” when he saw the horse come. Guru ji put his foot in the stirrup and grabbed its hair to get on top of the horse. Guru ji held the reins of the strong steed. Guru ji was the strongest warrior ever to ride a horse. The Nagarchi sounded the Nagara to signal that Guru ji had mounted his horse. Conches were blown along with Ransinghas. His regiment got ready with their weapons and mounted their horses. They stood in front of the enemy. Guru ji wanted to destroy the enemy.
Guru ji moved forward and stopped to see the battle. The riffles all fired at once. A lot of noise was made, that sounded like many Mridangs playing at once. The warriors were eager. They yelled: “kill them!” It sounded like they were singing. The bullets sounded like music. This was the beat. The colours of the battle came to fruition. Guru ji saw the battle and decided to go into the field. Bhai Parsram ji and Bhai Shaktoo ji came in front of Guru ji and said while their hands were folded: “Maharaj ji, please watch from here. Stay here and command us to go and kill the Turks. With your radiance, we can use your power to kill the Turks. They won’t stand in front of us. They are very less in numbers. Command us, and we will take over Lahore, Delhi and Agra. We will destroy them.” Guru ji saw their enthusiasm and said: “go and fight at the front. I will come behind you slowly to where Abdul Khan is. I will finish the battle today.” The Sikhs were happy to hear Guru ji. They moved their horses and pulled their weapons. The Nagaras sounded. They took their regiments and attacked the Turks. It was like lions attacking deer herds. Many riffles were fired at once.
Nabhi Baksh brought his sinners. The both sides clashed on the field. It was like hawks fighting over flesh for food. The riffles first fired and then the arrows. The swords were next. The weapons were all used. When the swords broke, the Kataars came out. They swung and took injuries. Some started to throw punches. They were in the heat of the battle. Nobody backed down. They all fought and died like warriors. They cut each other. The metal of the Turks turned on them. The battle was fierce. Many of them died at once. Bubbles are destroyed with wind, that’s how the Turks died. Many ran away like cowards. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji got angry and pulled his arrows hard. He pierced many Turks. He released 2 arrows at a time. He would pierce 2 chests at a time. He killed countless Turks. The ones that were hit did not survive. His horse was smart. It did not stay in one place. He went to where the battle was strong and released arrows there. He caused chaos there. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji was in the centre. He killed many Pathaans and Mughals. He was really strong. Where he went, he won that post. The enemy wanted to kill Bhai Bidhi Chand ji but they failed. Nobody could catch him. Nobody could touch him. He fought with agility. The ones that came to kill him, got killed themselves. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji would roar to challenge the Turks like a lion, before attacking. He released many arrows. He pulled them up to his ear. The arrows would go right through the Turks. They enemy fell to the ground.
Chandoo’s son, Karam Chand came in front of Bhai Bidhi Chand ji. He came to where bodies were piled up. There was a lot of blood there. Karam Chand, the fool, came in front of Bhai Bidhi Chand ji. He recognized Bhai Bidhi Chand ji and got happy. He said: “I remember you! You killed my father. You would walk with the Guru. I have been waiting for you to come in front of me. I will take revenge on you. What I wanted to happen, happened. I wanted to see you on the battlefield. Parmeshwar helped me. You are in front of me. I was indebted with the murder of my father. I will take my revenge. I will kill you first on this field. Then I will capture Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. You call yourself a great warrior. Watch how I kill you.” Bhai Bidhi Chand ji started to laugh out loud. He said: “you are very wise that you want to avenge your father’s death. I will kill you right now. Who will avenge your death? Everyone will think about this when you die.” Karam Chand heard this and released an arrow. It hit Bhai Bidhi Chand ji but it just pinched him. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji pulled the arrow out and threw it away. Karam Chand shot another arrow but Baba ji moved his horse and dodged it. Baba Bidhi Chand ji took an arrow out and released it towards Karam Chand. The arrow hit the forehead of the horse of Karam Chand. Karam Chand’s horse fell down. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji came close to Karam Chand. Karam Chand was trapped under his dead horse. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji got off his horse and pulled Karam Chand out. Baba ji took Karam Chand under his left arm. He arrested him. The battle was fierce. Many of Karam Chand’s regiment tried to attack Bhai Bidhi Chand ji but the Sikhs shot back. Karam Chand was dragged, while being squeezed in the chest. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji threw Karam Chand to Guru ji’s feet. Karam Chand got up but didn’t look at Guru ji. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji said to Guru ji, sarcastically: “Maharaj ji, this poor fellow has a debt on his head. He wanted to pay it off. He wanted to avenge his father’s death but he failed. We can tie his hands and feet; and do to him what we did to his father.” Guru ji laughed and said: “what do we want from him? Let this fool go and tell him not to do this again. He is just as corrupt as his father was. They are the servants of the Turks. Slap his head with shoes 5 times so he remembers what happened to his father.” Bhai Bidhi Chand ji let him go but slapped his head with his shoes, 5 times. Karam Chand was embarrassed and ran away. He didn’t say anything to Guru ji.
Karam Chand went back to the Turks and came to where Abdul Khan was. His heart was beating fast and was taking deep breaths. He said: “they captured me and had taken me to the Guru. I used my strength and wit to escape from them. I have come back, killing many of the Sikhs on the way. I have seen their secrets. The Guru has only a few Sikhs now. You should go ahead and charge hard. The Guru can be caught in a little while now.” After speaking to Abdul Khan, he made Abdul Khan go to the front. Karam Chand asked for another horse and mounted it. He was afraid but moved with Abdul Khan.
Bhai Bidhi Chand ji was fighting a fierce battle on the other side. Bhai Parsram ji and Bhai Shaktoo ji were on the battlefield as well.
6-37 Nabhi Baksh, Parsram and Shaktoo Die
Nabhi Baksh came with a really big force. His force had riffles, swords, spears and bows. They prepared their riffles with gunpowder and bullets. They used the ramrods which made swishing noises. The horses ran and they fired, many times. The sound was loud. The riffles spewed fire. The warriors were hit in the forehead or chest. Some died and some got injured. The horses ran bareback. Whoever came in front, fell down. Many were trampled by the horses. The two sides met each other and hit each other with spears. They yelled: “kill them!” The swords cut the limbs. Bhai Parsram ji and Bhai Shaktoo ji prepared their bows. They rode their horses to battle. The bows were ready. They came to where Nabhi Baksh was. The 2 Sikhs rode their horses and fired bullets, close to the enemies. The Nagaras and conches sounded. The Dhols were playing. The Pattas played. The Nishans had the Farlas unfurled. The Sikhs stood in front of the enemy and fired their riffles. Their regiment fired at once. Some were hit in the mouth. Their heads exploded like a clay pot. Their insides splashed outwards. Their hair was red from the blood. Their teeth and eyes were smashed. The warriors fought each other in close combat. Many bodies were smashed. The warriors encouraged each other. Some got tired of swinging their swords. Some were scared and some died. Horses were dead. Some horses were just injured, waiting for death. Many strong warriors were decapitated. The battle was fierce. The intestines were being eaten by vultures and dogs. 64 Kaljognis and 52 Birs were present to eat the flesh. The bhoots and prayts came. They were happy to be fed. They filled their bowls and drank the blood. Their black hair was opened and filled with blood and guts. They danced and sang songs. Many bhoots and prayts yelled in joy. They burped after eating the flesh. The vultures came to eat. The crows cawed. The warriors got trampled under the horses. They yelled to their comrades to be saved. They were killed trying to save others. There was chaos everywhere.
Nabhi Baksh fought with the Sikhs. The warriors fought each other. Bhai Parsram ji and Bhai Shaktoo ji released many arrows. They were deadly like the cobra. These 2 Sikhs fought with bravery. Metal clashed. Rivers of blood flowed. Bodies piled up. The Turks ran away with fear. They charged hard but failed. Each Sikh of the Guru, fought 10 each. They fought and died. Nabhi Baksh was surprised: “Ya Khuddah! What is happening? A few Sikhs killed many of my men. My army is not able to face the Sikhs. It looks like our metal is deceiving us. Men and horses are dead.” Nabhi Baksh looked around and felt upset. He said to his men: “don’t go back. Face the enemy. You were proud of your skills. You said you will win the field. You are being pushed by a few Sikhs, who do not have any skills to fight. They don’t even know how to fasten weapons. You are afraid of these people. You are running away from uncivilized people. What will you say to the Badshah? You will tell him that you ran away and saved your life?” He said this to make his people angry. He went to the front to fight. Bhai Parsram ji figured out who Nabhi Baksh was. Bhai Parsram ji rode his horse and went to him. Nabhi Baksh was decked with diamonds and rubies. His helmet was golden. He tied a Cheera on top of his helmet which was expensive. He was shining in the light because of all the gems. His clothes were expensive. He had a sword in his Gatra. He was fighting fearlessly with his bow. His horse was wise and agile. It was a strong and expensive steed. The saddle was golden with gems. Nabhi Baksh came in to the field with eagerness. Bhai Parsram ji took out his sharp arrows and shot them. Bhai Shaktoo ji was called and told: “we need to kill this general. He is our aim.” Both Sikhs got happy to have a good hunt. They shot many arrows. They called the Sikhs and charged hard. They fired many bullets. It showered bullets from both sides. Nabhi Baksh was a good warrior. He wore perfume on his clothes. He released many arrows and killed the enemy. He called his men to fight. Spears and swords were used from both sides. Khandas came out. The shields clashed with the swords. The bow strings made noise. The Sailas swung and pulled the guts out. The arrows showered. The cowards ran away. The warriors yelled in pain. The cowards got tired and stayed back. The jackals and vultures shrieked. The horses neighed. Heads rolled. Nabhi Baksh killed many Sikhs. He caused chaos.
Bhai Parsram ji came into Bir Ras and released an arrow. The arrow hit the saddle of Nabhi Baksh. The saddle broke and the arrow went through the horse. The horse died and fell. Nabhi Baksh jumped off his falling horse. He was quick. He aimed at Bhai Parsram ji and released an arrow. Bhai Parsram ji got hit and went unconscious. The Sikhs surrounded Bhai Parsram ji to save him. Bhai Shaktoo ji took his sword out with his shield. He faced the enemy and stood like a mountain. The Pathaans charged hard. The Sikhs did not move back. It was like stopping a river. The mountain would stop it. The Sikhs protected Bhai Parsram ji. The swords clashed. The Turks pushed hard and tried to get the unconscious Bhai Parsram ji. Bhai Shaktoo ji was killing many. He blocked the strikes and swung his sword. He was like a strong flag in the field. Warriors were fighting with him and killing many Turks; like moths falling on to a lamp.
Bhai Parsram ji woke up after a few minutes. He took his weapon and looked at Nabhi Baksh. His eyes were red and charged. Many Khandas clashed. Spears and arrows swung. Bhai Parsram ji swung his sword and took Nabhi Baksh’s head off. Some warriors died but had the swords in their hands still. Some bodies still had their eyes open. Their clothes were drenched in blood. The Turks saw the dead body of the son of Abdul Khan. Bhai Parsram ji and Bhai Shaktoo ji were both killed in the charge, attaining martyrdom. They fought to contentment before they died. The ones that were alive, moved back from fatigue. Warriors on both sides got tired. They stopped fighting. The bodies were piled up on each other. The blood made the ground into mud.
6-38 Kareem Baksh gets ready for the Charge
Two servants went to where Abdul Khan was and said to him: “where are you looking Navaab ji? Something really bad has happened. We have very bad news. Your moon-like handsome son has been killed by the Sikhs. He fought a fierce battle. He didn’t back down at all. He killed many with his arrows. He didn’t let anyone come foreword. He was cut on the field. Many other soldiers died with him. There are rivers of blood where his body fell.” The Navaab heard this and felt like an arrow had hit him in the heart. He began to cry out loud on top of horse. He said: “I didn’t get enough of seeing you. You pierced my heart. Where did you go my son? You left me. You were brave. You should have come back. You died a brave death. Why did you go ahead? I told you to be safe.” As he was crying and yelling, his younger son came and consoled him: “father, this is not good for you to do. Your son died a warrior’s death. The morale of the army will go down. You are the leader of the army. Everyone looks to you for guidance and support. Keep calm. Don’t cry right now. I will avenge my brother’s death. I will go and arrest or kill the Guru. I won’t back down till I succeed. Give me permission to go. If I arrest the Guru, we will have honor. Otherwise, Shah Jahan will curse us.” Hearing his younger son’s words, Abdul Khan put himself together. The younger son took his army and went on ahead. He took his weapons and got ready to fight. The Nagaras sounded as he advanced. Many instruments sounded. The battle was getting heated. The Turks saw that it was the end now. Abdul Khan saw the piles of bodies on the ground.
Abdul Khan’s younger son, whose brother died, he was really angry. He was upset seeing his father crying. His moustache was still coming in. He was tall and strong. He knew Shastervidya. He thought we was skilled in warfare. He had golden jewellery with many gems. He had a golden helmet with golden weapons. His name was Kareem Baksh, the strong. He was proud. He didn’t see anyone better than him. He had an expensive horse that was clever. He wore a Shamla Cheera with a plume coming out of it. He had a sharp spear in his hand. He asked his companions: “where is my brother’s body? Where did the uncivilized Sikhs kill my brother? Show me my brother’s body. I will send the Guru Hargobind ji to my brother.” The companions said to Kareem Baksh: “over there, where many Sikhs are standing with riffles and bows, behind them is another regiment, on the right is the Guru on the beautiful horse. When Nabhi Baksh was killed, our army got anxious and went back. The Sikhs took that post. The Sikhs are standing there.” Kareem Baksh heard this and got angry. His eyes went red and he grinded his teeth. He took many brave warriors and headed to the place. He said to his men: “oh, ones who eat and drink together; my friends, you eat and drink with me; only those should come with me that will go all the way to the Guru. Only the ones who don’t love their life should come with me. Only the ones who don’t think of their kids or wives should go with me. Come with me. The ones who are scared or think of their families, go back. If you love your family, go back and don’t come with me. Go and stand with my father if you are scared.” The cowards heard him and slowly moved back. They all knew that death was in front of them. Guru ji was going to kill them all. They knew that Guru ji was a great warrior. The cowards talked: “we came with pride. Kareem Baksh wants to capture the Guru, the one that killed 7,000 men. The ones that survived are the ones that ran away. The one that killed so many, is a great warrior. He won’t be caught. He has powers as well. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is the Peer of Peers. This Guru is on his throne. Kareem Baksh is being childish. The Guru will kill everyone.” These people went back. They cleverly moved back. The ones that were influenced by Kareem Baksh, they went ahead. They didn’t think of their families. They made groups and advanced.
Abdul Khan saw his younger son going. He asked his officers with pain in his heart: “who is that going?” The officer said: “your son is going to capture the Guru. He has taken the best soldiers.” Abdul Khan remembered his elder son and said: “why is he asking for his death now? Go and stop him quickly. Tell him that I don’t want him to go.” One servant went to Kareem Baksh and said: “stay here and fight. Your father doesn’t want you to charge. You will get caught and die. The enemy want to kill you.” Kareem Baksh did not obey his father and said: “I will avenge my brother’s death.”
Guru ji, the omniscient, knew that Kareem Baksh was coming. Guru ji said to Bhai Bidhi Chand ji: “this big regiment that is coming, is commanded by the Sooba Jalandhar Abdul Khan’s younger son. He is proud and angry at his brother’s death. He wants to charge at us and kill everyone. He brought the best warriors. You take a regiment and face him. Release arrows and kill them. Save yourself and attack.” Baba Bidhi Chand ji was happy to hear this and roared: “Maharaj, these coward vultures are nothing. Let them come, we will kill these cowards for what they are.” Baba Bidhi Chand ji had the Nagaras sounded. They sounded like clouds thundering. He got Guru ji’s permission to go.
Baba Bidhi Chand ji took many men and attacked the Turks. Where Abdul Khan was, his servants said to him: “your son did not listen to your command. He says we wants to go to where the Guru is.” Abdul Khan was upset and held his head. He regretted his decision to come and thought to himself: “my family is not going to live on. My name will not live on. These Kshatriyas came all of a sudden and made me attack without thinking. They were already dead; they will get all of us killed too now.” Abdul Khan looked towards Rattan Chand and Karam Chand with great anger. He said to them with great irritation: “why are you standing here, you shameless ones? Where Nabhi Baksh’s body is, Kareem Baksh is gone there. Go and help my son. Protect my son. He shouldn’t die. Where Kareem Baksh goes, go with him. Don’t leave him. I will put pressure from this side. This is the last charge. Go and capture the Guru. Kill him if you can’t arrest him. Take Nabhi Baksh’s revenge.” When Rattan Chand and Karam Chand heard Abdul Khan’s scolding, they thought to themselves: “he is upset that his son died.” Both Kshatriyas stayed quiet and advanced. They took some men and met Kareem Baksh. The two rode on either side of Kareem Baksh.
The Nagaras sounded from both sides. Jaikaras were yelled. The Turks sounded the Nagaras and their horses rode ahead. Baba Bidhi Chand ji fastened his weapons and advanced. Bullets were fired and made loud noises. It sounded like popcorn popping. The battle was fierce. Both sides had brave warriors. They charged each other.
6-39 Kareem Baksh Dies
The younger son of the Navaab attacked with a great army. As he advanced, the battle got fiercer. He was like lightening. Baba Bidhi Chand ji fought hard. The charge was fierce. There was a lot of noise. The vultures and crows ate flesh. The crows cawed. The Kaljognis ate flesh and drank blood. The Kaljognis danced with their hair open. They laughed out loud and put the blood on their hair. They carried the skulls. The chewed the bones. They tied the horse tails to their hair. Shivji made his skull garland longer. There were cut limbs on the floor. The Kaljognis picked up the bones and put them on their shoulders. They took the horse shoes. They danced on the land of Sri Hargovindpur. The Bhoots and Prayts danced. They ate the flesh and drank the blood. The ground was red with blood. The scene was scary. The cowards got scared.
The Turks began to lose their power. Bullets flew from both sides. The warriors fought hard. The horses were running fast and looked like they were flying. The ramrods were ramming the bullets into the riffles. The riffles were fired. The warriors aimed and fired. This was done quickly. Many bullets were fired. The warriors fought, killed and died. They fired bullets and arrows. The bowstrings made noise everywhere, as many were being shot. The arrows flew through the air with great force. The battle was fierce. The two sides met and fought with spears. The spears pierced the chests. The ones that got hit did not get up again. The warriors stabbed the spears and took them out to kill another. The tulwars cut the limbs. The spears were stabbed through the chests. Sailays and shield clashed. The strong warriors fell to the ground. They were injured and swayed as they fell. Shields were used to block. Some stabbed the bellies with the kataars. Swords were swinging and bathing in the blood. Many swords broke by hitting the shields. The hilts stayed in the hands as the warriors continued to fight. The cowards ran away. The ones that fought, they did not care to live.
Kareem Baksh came with strong warriors. He came close to the Sikh regiments. He said to his people: “charge and arrest Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. These Sikhs are less. Kill them and arrest their Guru. Surround the Guru. Don’t let anyone leave alive. We want to catch him or kill him. Don’t let him run away. You will be victorious by Allah’s will. I will get you many Jageers and rewards form the Badshah. We will drink liquor tonight after the win. The Kebabs will be ready for you when you get back. You will be praised in the world for arresting the Guru. You will be respected everywhere.” He motivated his men in this way. He charged into battle. When he made his horse jump, Baba Bidhi Chand ji thought of Guru ji and mounted an arrow on his bow. He showered many arrows on to the Turks. He killed many. He made his horse run fast. He killed many Turks with one arrow. Kareem Baksh came with a spear in his hand. He made his horse run fast, dancing. Karam Chand and Rattan Chand were with Kareem Chand. They had a lot of warriors and killed many as they charged. They laid many down after killing them.
The Sikhs charged like hungry hawks attacking their prey. The both sides pushed each other. Shields and swords were used. The shields were ripped apart. The swords broke. The limbs were cut. Bodies piled upon each other. The shores of the Beas were red. The Khans did a fierce charge. The Sikhs began to move back. They had lost their post to the Turks. Where Nabhi Baksh’s body was, Kareem Baksh reached. He saw his dead brother’s body. His limbs were cut. His head was in the dust. Kareem Baksh cried when seeing him. He stopped crying and started to fight again. He charged hard and pushed the Sikhs back. The army was too big. Many warriors died. The Navaab’s young son caused chaos as he was angry over his brother dying. Baba Bidhi Chand ji noticed that the Sikhs were losing. He showered many sharp arrows. He pierced many limbs. He stopped the charge alone, like a big gate. Many Sikhs that were moving back had hope. They pushed hard again. Baba ji killed many. He caused chaos. Many yelled for help. Baba Bidhi Chand ji stopped the charge like a mountain stopping a tsunami. He was the pillar of the battle. Kareem Baksh was stopped.
Baba ji yelled: “you vulture! Where are you going? Fight me first! I won’t let you get to Guru ji! Your death brought you to me.” Kareem Baksh heard this and got angry. He took his spear and attacked Baba Bidhi Chand ji. He stabbed the spear and broke Baba ji’s horse’s saddle. Guru ji saved Baba ji. The stab was a hard one. Baba Ji took out his Khanda and cut the spear. He said: “don’t run away now. I want a turn too. I won’t let you go now. The Ghana you tied (auspicious string tied on the groom), I will make sure you get married today (to death). If you run away now, you will be ridiculed.” Kareem Baksh turned his horse again. He was really angry hearing Baba Bidhi Chand ji. He swung his sword, but Baba ji swung first. Kareem Baksh blocked the strike with his shield. Kareem Baksh swung his sword but Baba ji blocked it. Baba ji got angry and grinded his teeth. His eyes were red. He filled his biceps and triceps with power and moved his Khanda back for a strike. He swung his sword with all his might. The Khanda went through Kareem Baksh’s neck, like a goat being slaughtered. He took off Kareem Baksh’s head like a pumpkin sliced by a sword. Kareem Baksh’s body fell to the ground. Baba Bidhi Chand ji roared like a lion. The Khans saw Kareem Baksh’s headless body and lost their morale. They got scared and moved back.
Karam Chand and Rattan Chand moved back as well. They thought to themselves: “the Sikhs killed both of the Navaab’s sons. Who will fight now? Who will lead the charge now?” They were scared and didn’t go forward. They didn’t go back to the Navaab, as they were afraid what he would do, knowing his younger son died too. They thought to themselves: “this is bad.” They disappeared into the army. They hid their heads. Their regiment ran back. Kareem Baksh died. Nabhi Baksh was killed too. The Turks began to run. Baba Bidhi Chand ji ran after the enemy. He cut the enemy with his sword. Many fell while running. The swords shined with blood on them. The Sikhs and Baba ji; Bhai Jagna ji, Bhai Molak ji and other Sikhs fought hard. Their hands swelled and got stuck in to the hilts of their swords. Their clothes were drenched with blood. Their bodies were hot. The Turks ran away.
Abdul Khan saw the army running back. The soldiers said: “Khan Sahib, why are you watching the drama from back here? Your second son died too. He charged on ahead, alone. The Sikhs made everyone run away. One Sikh of the Guru fought Kareem Baksh. He took his head off. Our army saw this and ran back. Abdul Khan broke down after hearing this. He shed tears and mourned.
6-40 Abdul Khan Charges
Navaab Abdul Khan cried over the death of his sons. He regretted his decision to attack. He was too quick in deciding. As he saw this, the army came back. They stopped fighting. The soldiers came back. Only a few riffles were firing. The Sikhs stood on their side. The battle was calm. Abdul Khan was seen crying by his officers. The officers mourned as well. The Kshatriyas came with their heads down. They were the instigators. They were scared and stood far away. Many men died. Abdul Khan cried for a while. He thought to himself: “everyone is looking at me, crying. I have to get a hold of myself. People will know that I cried after losing. The Badshah will know of this and take my rule away. If I lose my rule, where will I go? How will I survive? I will lose my honor. My sons died deaths of warriors. I will be dishonored if I stay alive. I will be in pain. I will have to go and arrest the Guru or kill him. Then my life will be worth living. Otherwise, I will go where my sons have gone. I will die as well. I can’t back down from war now. The Badshah will not like that. I will be slandered in the world if I run away. It is better to die, rather to live like a coward.” He wiped his tears and saw his dead men. He saw the destruction of his army. It was evening now. The dusk was upon them. Abdul Khan continued thinking: “we won’t be able to fight at night. I may not be able to take revenge tomorrow. Who knows what will happen in life now. I may not get another chance to fight the Guru again. My generals and my sons have died. I’m the only one left. My sons died before me. There is no other way to fight now. The morale is down. The men want to move back. I have to either kill or be killed. There is no other way now.” When Abdul Khan saw Rattan Chand and Karam Chand, he saw them alive and got angry. He called them to him angrily: “you are both damned. You started this fight and didn’t fight yourself. My 5 generals are dead. My 2 sons are dead. You two are still alive. This was your fight. You cowards kept moving around, avoiding death. Why didn’t you fight? You didn’t use your weapons. You came to my court and spoke highly of yourselves. You started the conflict and had many warriors killed. That is all you can do. You two will now come with me and charge. Just as you boasted about, take your weapons and show me that you are warriors.” The Kshatriyas did not speak. They didn’t look up towards the Navaab. Abdul Khan commanded and had the Nagaras sounded. The Ransinghas and conches sounded as the head general was heading to war. The mounted warriors with spear lead the charge. The flags were out. The Navaab was going to lead the charge with great anger. He took his best to the front. They headed towards where the Sikhs were holding the post. Abdul Khan saw his men dead on the field. Horses were dead. Some were under the horses. The dogs and jackals were eating the flesh along with bhoots and Prayts. Rudra was on the field with the Ganns. They were looking at the battlefield. The vultures, Pisaach, crows and other beings ate the flesh and drank the blood. There were piles and piles of bodies.
Baba Bidhi Chand ji saw the army and went to Guru ji. He said to him: “Maharaj! The remaining army is coming to attack. The others have all died. This will be a fierce charge. This will be the most difficult one. The whole army is coming now. They are coming for their end. Ending them will end the battle. Guru ji, please end this now.” Guru ji heard this and said: “his 5 generals and 2 sons have been killed. He doesn’t have any generals now. Abdul Khan has come himself. He wants to win. The other Turks were killed by the Sikhs. The remaining are coming together. I will fight Abdul Khan. I will finish this war. I will see what their strength is. He will be tested. I will kill them all. They don’t know the radiance of the Guru Ghaddi. They don’t know its greatness. They wish to give their lives now. They will all be killed slowly. My Sikh servants will rule one day. The ones who die with desires now, they will come back. The ones without desires will receive Mukti. The ones with desire will be the kings and save the Dharma of Hind. They will follow the path of Sikhi and make others follow it too. When those Sikh kings die, they will come to me and become Mukat.” After saying this, Guru ji had the Nagaras played. The warrior Sikhs got ready to fight. The battle had been going on for 6 hours. After fighting for so long, the Sikhs were tired.
Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji went to the front. He wanted to fight himself. He wanted to kill Abdul Khan. The Nishans of both armies were open. It was a signal for the final victory. The instruments played: the conches and ransinghas. The warriors roared. The bullets fired. The horses ran. The bullets were fired from the riffles. The warriors challenged each other. The Sikhs went to the front lines and so did the Turks. Guru ji had his bow. He spun his arrow in his hand. He made his strong steed run fast. He saw the enemy army. He scoped where Navaab Abdul Khan was. He was advancing with the motivation of Kaal. Satguru ji released many arrows. He took the sharpest ones and released them. They were snakes for the enemy. They went through the bodies like snakes going into its burrow. The arrows went through many. Horses and men, all were pierced. There was no stopping the arrows. The Turks fell. They got angry as many of their men died. Guru ji killed many from afar. Abdul Khan said: “kill the Guru!” The Turks advanced. They fired their riffles all at once. The popping noise was heard. They showered the bullets on the Sikhs. The Sikhs got angry and charged hard. They fired their bullets and loaded more gunpowder. They loaded 2 bullets at a time and rammed it with the ramrod. They quickly loaded their riffles after firing for the next shot. Many Turks fell. A lot of noise was heard. The arrows flew and pierced the warriors. The horses were jumping, the spears were being stabbed. Many chests were stabbed and torn apart. The warriors were cut. It was like cooks loading dumplings on a sheesh rod. The swords were out. The warriors fought like lions. They cut each other’s limbs. The ground was red. The Kataars were being stabbed. The horses neighed. The warriors fell from their saddles. The two sides fought hard. It was chaos. The ground was muddy from the blood. Thousands of bodies were on the ground. Many weapons were used.
