6-31 Getting Ready for the Battle
When Abdul Khan was about 3 km away from Rohaila, he stopped his horse. He transferred the command of his great army to the strong generals. He spoke the generals about the battle strategy. He divided the army up into different regiments. There was a general named Bairam Khan, who was an expert in weaponry. He was a skilled swordsman and Pattaybaaz (sword and shield fighter). He was given 1,000 men to command. Those 1,000 men were the best of the best. The second general was Mohammed Khan, the wise. He was a great archer. He would release strong arrows. Many great enemies were defeated by him. He had won many battles in the past. He was big and strong. 1,000 men were given to him as well. Mohammed Khan was to fight with great attention. The third general was Balwand Khan. He was a proud warrior who only went to battle when it would become chaotic. He used a spear to fight and carried a Bambliali (a type of spear). He was given 1,000 men too. The fourth general was Ali Baksh, a great warrior who was a great marksman. He was patient and fired his riffle well. His servants would prepare the riffles for him to fire. He would aim and fire at the enemy. Many were killed by his riffles. He never missed. Many good warriors were with him. The fifth general was Imam Baksh who was great at Shastervidya. He was a good horse rider. He would move around well on the battlefield to dodge arrows and bullets. He got 1,000 men. A total of 5,000 were allotted with 5 generals. Abdul Khan had two sons who were great fighters. The elder was Nabi Baksh and the younger was Karim Baksh. They were both wearing golden jewellery with expensive gems, that shined in the light. Their horses were expensive that danced like dancers. 2,000 men were given to each son. He said to them: “use your strength to fight. Fight with care.” 4,000 men were allotted to them. The remaining 6,000 men, Abdul Khan kept with himself. 8 regiments were made in total. They all loved to fight.
Satguru ji got news of the approaching army of 15,000 men from Jalandhar. A guard came and said: “Guru ji you are sitting carefree. 15,000 men are coming. Abdul Khan is attacking with anger. He is manipulated by Rattan Chand and Karam Chand. He has 8 regiments. A battle is upon us. Please get ready to fight with your weapons. Saddle up your horse.” Satguru Hargobind Sahib ji heard this and said: “sound the Nagaras! The warriors should get ready. Bring your weapons and come to me quick.” Everyone heard Guru ji’s command. They knew it was time for war. They fastened their weapons and came into attention. Bhai Jattu ji grabbed his riffle and came to Guru ji. Guru ji said to him: “take 200 men with you. Go ahead and fight the enemy face on. Keep your riffles ready. When the enemy comes, shoot all your riffles at once.” Guru ji looked towards Bhai Kalyana ji and gave him 100 mounted warriors. Guru ji said: “prepare your riffles and fire from the other side. Defend yourself first.” Bhai Nano ji was a great warrior. He was an expert practitioner of Shastervidya. He was given 300 men and told: “kill the Malesh with your strength.” Bhai Piraga ji came. Guru ji gave him 500 men and said: “go ahead and fight.” Bhai Mathura ji (the Bhatt whose Bani is in Guru Granth Sahib ji) was a great warrior. Guru ji gave him 400 mounted soldiers and said: “don’t let the Turks come ahead.” Bhai Jagna ji was standing close to Guru ji. Guru ji blessed him with his sight and gave him 100 men by saying: “fire your riffles on the enemy.” Bhai Parsram ji and Bhai Shaktoo ji came. They had bows hanging on their shoulders. Their arrows were always a talk of the battle. They never missed their targets. They killed many. Bhai Parsram ji was given 200 soldiers and Bhai Shaktoo ji, Guru ji kept him with him. Bhai Molak ji, Bhai Jaati Malik ji, Bhai Ananda ji and Bhai Bidhi Chand ji were with Guru ji. They all set off to fight the enemy. 8 regiments were made by Guru ji in this way. Guru ji made preparations and got ready. They were going to receive the Turks like visitors. Just as dishes are prepared for visitors, the warriors prepared shields. The Khappra Arrows were Jaleebis. The Tulwars were Pakvaans. The spears were Barfis for the Turks. The many bullets were shakarparras. The warriors were the servers of this Langar for the Turks.
Abdul Khan sent a messenger to Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. The messenger was told by Abdul Khan to say: “Guru ji, leave this place. You will be forgiven if you go. It is not good to cause problems everyday.” The messenger came and noticed that Guru ji was ready to fight. The messenger bowed to Guru ji and said: “Abdul Khan has sent a message for you: you killed Gherard for no reason and took over his land. You are making a fort now. Who did you ask to do this? You already took the Badshah’s Baaz. You are supposed to be a Fakir, why are you taking on the traditions of kings? You don’t fear anyone. You fought the Emperor. You can be forgiven, though, if you leave this place. Otherwise, the army is here to fight you. The whole army is ready to fight. If you don’t agree, all of the revenges will be taken. We will take the Baaz and give it back to the Emperor. We will arrest you alive. What delusion of greatness are you sitting with? 15,000 soldiers have come with anger. You will be killed or arrested. You won’t be released if you are arrested.” Guru Hargobind Sahib ji heard this and got angry. Guru ji said to the messenger: “cowards run away like vultures and jackals. We will win this battle. Shah Jahan is your Shah. My Shah is Karta Purakh Allah. Who will be caught or killed, you will only find out after the battle. Meeree and Peeree are both in this world. I have the Ghaddi and the Takhat. To fight battles is my task. This Akhara of sinners that has grown, I will destroy it. The path that I sent Mughlas Khan on, you will be sent to the same place. It is not a sin to kill an enemy. It is a sin to give pain to a Sadhoo. I started this conflict in order to destroy you all. The circumstances are happening by themselves. I tried to make Gherard understand but he was manipulated by his own death and did not use his logic. What fort did I make? I just made a place to rest here for 4 days. It was not wise to attack in this way. I will still forgive Abdul Khan if he goes back. If you want to keep your greatness then go back, otherwise your death is near. Tell Abdul Khan all this. Tell him to come if he wants to meet Mughlas Khan. He can come then. Nobody will stop him. If he goes back, he will remain alive. Do one of these two things. If he fights, he will die.” The messenger herd this and scratched his head. He saw that Guru ji was ready to fight.
The messenger came back to Abdul Khan and told him Guru ji’s fearless words: “he is like a lion who is never afraid, even in his dreams. The Guru is brave and fearless. The Badshah, Soobas and Umraavs, he does not fear any of them. He is ready to fight on the battlefield. He is not scared nor is a making excuses. He is ready to fight.” Abdul Khan got angry and knew that he had to fight. He had the Nagaras played along with the Ransinghas and Napheeryas. They warriors fired their riffles. A lot of smoke flew up, along with the dust from the horses’ feet. It was like black clouds that came. The riffles firing looked like lightening. The bullets were like hail. The cowards were scared like snakes hearing the thunder. The peacocks are happy to hear the thunder; the warriors were happy to hear the Nagaras. They were ready to fight. The bullets were showering. Guru Hargobind Sahib ji’s arrows were going to stop these clouds like a fierce wind. This can be seen.
6-32 Bhai Jattu and Mohammed Khan die
Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji was a very patient and powerful warrior. He mounted his horse and looked at his army after doing Ardaas. His 8 regiments were ready. They were grouped strategically on the left, right, front and back. Guru ji was in the centre. The regiments were divided further into groups. Satguru ji said: “leave the Dhera now. Let’s go and shoot bullets. Stay within your groups. Don’t get caught in the middle of the enemy lines. Don’t go ahead and try to fight alone. Be aware of your own safety first.” The warriors moved forward. Guru ji was in the middle on his horse. It looked like Inder within the Devatas; Krishan ji within the Yadavs; that’s how Guru Hargobind Sahib ji was within the Sikhs. He had his 9 Tonka bow. Nobody else could string that bow. He had sharp arrows in his quiver. He had Khappra arrows. His other quivers were loaded onto mules and carts. He wanted the quivers within him, that were made in Kartarpur. He instructed the blacksmiths and had the arrows made. He had a heavy shield on his left waste. The bosses were 5.25 Sers heavy. He had a sword with him. He fastened the support guards to fight in the battlefield. He had his big Tegh in his Gatra (currently placed in Sursingh now). With one hand he pulled the reins and looked at the enemy.
Bhai Jattu attacked first and showered bullets with his regiment onto the enemy. The riffles fired all at once. Many warriors faced each other. They came out to the front. They fired onto the enemy, coming out on their horses. Bhai Jattu ji came near to the enemy and pierced many in the chest with his bullets. Bhai Jattu ji got ahead. Mahammed Khan saw him and came to fight him. He took his 1,000 men and shot back. Many warriors fell to the ground. They all said: “kill them!” It was afternoon and everyone fought. The riffles fired with fire spouting out of the barrel. The bullets were rammed with the ramrod, making swishing noises. They all aimed at the enemy and fired. Many bullets fired. It sounded like popcorn popping. The bullets came and fire could be seen. A lot of dust flew up and the sun could not be seen. The warriors fought shouting at each other. They made their horses bump into each other. The warriors engaged in hand-to-hand combat and punched each other. The battle was on the shore of the Beas. The Turks came in big numbers but the Sikhs shot them down. Bhai Jattu ji was surrounded by the enemy, as many came on their horses. They yelled and came close to them. They fired at him. Mohammed Khan said: “separate them and kill them. Be alert and kill this Sikh. Everyone attack at once.” The Turks heard Mohammed Khan and attacked. Bhai Jattu ji was surrounded but was not scared. He challenged the Turks and fought them. He shot many bullets and killed many. The Turks took his bullets and fell to the ground. Some had their heads smashed and some were shot in the chest, stomach or arm. Whoever came to the front was shot. They were shot in the chest or stomach. They swayed and fell to the ground. Some had their arms and legs broken. Many had fallen. Many horses died. Some horses ran around without warriors. Many were trampling the dead on the ground. Bhai Jattu ji killed many. He fought with anger.
Bhai Kalyana ji came into the field firing many bullets. He killed many Turks. Whoever came close to him, died. Some got scared and ran back. The Turks were pushed back with the charge. They were pushed with the bullets. Both regiments pushed the Turks. Bairam Khan got angry seeing this. He said: “let’s go ahead and fight the Sikhs. Everyone attack at once. Lay on the ground and shoot. Then run and attack the Sikhs.” The foot soldiers attacked like clouds in the month of Chet, hailing onto the ripe crops. Bairam Khan attacked. The Sikhs got angry. They were waiting for them. They shot bullets and fought them with spears. They did Jaikaras and attacked. The heads of the Turks rolled. In this way many died. It was like lightening destroying minarets. Many got tramped with the horses. The swords were out. They shined like lightening. They were red from the blood. It was like they wore red clothes. The arms were cut from the shoulders. The soldiers fell from their horses. Some were cut from the head and some had their legs cut. Some were stabbed in the chest with a spear. The bodies piled upon each other. Fountains of blood sprouted from their bodies like springs from a mountain. The injured called out for help. Nobody came to give them water. Many died with swords in their hands. The vultures, dogs, and crows came to eat the flesh of the dead.
Bhai Jattu ji fought with pride. He did not let anyone go ahead. Mohammed Khan fought with Bhai Jattu ji. The Sikhs took out their swords and attacked many times. The swords were drenched in beautiful colours. The swords hit the shields. The swords were the tongues of death. The warriors fought with patience. They fought bravely. They were fearless and did not feel pain. It was a fight of pride. Limbs were cut but no one left. Mohammed Khan came to Bhai Jattu ji, the brave. Many bullets showered. The warriors’ clothes were red with blood. Mohammed Khan said: “don’t run away! Stay there! You killed many of my men. Take my arrow now. I won’t let you go alive.” Bhai Jattu ji could not tolerate his words. He said: “you stay there too!” He prepared his bullets and fired it. He hit the horse of Mohammed Khan. Mohammed Khan could not release his arrow in time and his horse fell down. Mohammed Khan jumped off his horse. He pulled his bow and released his arrow. It flew like a snake and hit Bhai Jattu ji in the arm. It just nicked him. Guru ji protected him this time. Mohammed Khan released another arrow and killed Bhai Jattu ji’s horse. He jumped off his horse and prepared his riffle. Mohammed Khan released a third arrow and Bhai Jattu ji fired his riffle. Both of them were hit at the same time. They were both hit in the heart. Bhai Jattu ji was hit with an arrow that went through his heart. He fell to the ground. Mohammed Khan was hit with the bullet and fell. The army watched as the two warriors fell. Abdul Khan saw the Turks running away with fear. The sinner Abdul Khan got angry and spoke to Bairam Khan: “why don’t you stand your ground? Where will you run to from here? Has your honor been burnt by the lightening? You used to speak highly of your strength and courage. You got scared by a few Sikhs today. They made you run away. Go quickly and stop our army from running away.” Bairam Khan heard this and felt angry. He felt embarrassed and took his regiment forward. He grinded his teeth and charged towards the Sikhs. The Sikhs charged as well. The bullets fired. Bairam Khan pushed the Sikhs back with arrows and bullets. The horses ran forward. Many bullets showered on to the Sikhs. The Sikhs were pushed back. He calls himself a big warrior. He has killed many warriors of ours. Nobody could face him. He is cutting through our army holding a sword.” Bhai Mathura ji was happy to hear Guru ji’s blissful words. He said: “if you will be by my side, this task will be successful. I will kill him right now with your blessing. He is nothing. He is a coward in front of your blessing. Death has inspired him to come here. Your glory is great. These people are ants in front of you. We can go capture Shah Jahan in his home by your power.” He bowed to Guru ji and got his permission. He took 400 men and charged forward. The warriors yelled: “kill them!” They attacked by the sounds of the Nagaras. The warriors got pumped hearing the Nagaras. They all took their riffles and rode their horses with enthusiasm. He thought to himself: “many of my men are dead. What are my people doing? The morale is down in my army. They aren’t fighting with force.” He got angry and yelled at his people while calling Balwand Khan: “you are a great warrior of the spear. Why aren’t you giving your body for the fight? The Sikhs aren’t letting our lines go forward. They have stopped us. If you don’t arrest or kill Guru Hargobind Sahib ji, then we will lose. We will lose our honor. Are you here to sit or fight? The other Khans won’t let us sit or speak with them if we lose today. The Sikhs are less in numbers but are holding us off. If you can’t win this war, what other battle can we face then? Look over there! That is one of their generals coming forward (pointing to Bhai Kalyana ji). He is brave. He has a red horse. Look how it’s dancing. Kill him with anger. He should not leave alive. 6-35 Ali Baksh, Nano and Imam Baksh die
Few Sikhs remained at the front line. They were surrounded by the Pathaans. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji saw this and got angry. Ali Baksh was at the front and fighting. He was firing many bullets with pride. He was confident because he killed a big general of the Sikhs. The Turks all charged with him. They came sounding their Nagaras, loud. The Turks had their Nishans in their hands. The Sikhs had their Nishans as well. The Farlas were all unfurled and waiving in the wind. The foolish Turks thought they had won, which was why they unfurled their Nishans. They advanced with their horses hard.
Guru Hargobind Sahib ji took his fierce bow and was going to stop the Turks. The 9 Tonka bow was loaded with a Khapra arrow. Guru ji pulled it to his ear and let it go. The ones that came to the front, celebrating their so-called victory, were pierced in the chest with the arrow of the Guru. It went through 1, 2, 3, not 4, but 5 people. The arrow was going with tremendous force. It went through 10 more Pathaans. The arrow came to where Abdul Khan was standing at the back. It killed many men and horses by the time it got to the back. Guru ji released more arrows in this way. He quickly took the charge down, killing many Pathaans. Hundreds died in a few seconds. The Turks couldn’t see where these arrows were coming from. They said: “who is shooting these arrows? It is piercing 7 at a time. He has killed many of our men in a few seconds.” The Turks got scared and stopped advancing. They turned backwards. Bhai Nano ji was standing close to Guru ji. Guru ji looked at him and gave him a command: “Ali Baksh is charging hard. He will be killed by your hands. He is a great marksman. Save yourself from his bullet and kill him.” Bhai Nano ji heard the command and took his bow. He was a great archer.
Bhai Nano ji rode his horse and looked at Ali Baksh. There were a lot of Turks in the way. He pierced through all of them. He released many arrows and killed the Turks. He made it shower arrows. 300 Sikhs were with Bhai Nano ji. They were fighting with great courage. They fired their riffles, all at once. They charged hard and caused a great chaos. There was a lot of noise on the battlefield, echoing in the sky. The Pathaans that came forward were laid on the ground by the Sikh. Many warriors died. Bhai Nano ji came in front of Ali Baksh. He aimed at Ali Baksh with a very sharp arrow. It was a very sharp and lethal arrow. He rode his horse and stood on the stirrups of his horse. He aimed at Ali Baksh and released an arrow. Ali Baksh saw the arrow coming and prepared his riffle. He wasted too much time preparing the riffle. Bhai Nano ji, the mighty, aimed for Ali Baksh’s face, as Ali Baksh’s body and head was filled with chainmail. Ali Baksh’s riffle remained in his hands as the arrow came and went through his mouth, and out the other side of his head, like a snake going into its burrow. Ali Baksh swayed and fell onto the ground, head first. Ali Baksh was killed. The Pathaans saw this and were impressed. Many were scared and moved back. They said: “the Sikhs are really strong. We thought they were just a bunch of low-caste people.” The Sikhs attacked with their swords. They killed many Turks in a few seconds. The enemy was shaken up. Abdul Khan saw this. He spoke to Imam Baksh in anger: “what are you looking at from back here? Our men are scared and coming back. Take your regiment and go to the field. Kill the strong Sikhs now. Stop our foolish men from running and ask them where will they go. Go and give them courage.”
Imam Baksh got angry and took his regiment of 1,000 men. Where Bhai Nano ji was fighting, Imam Baksh went there. Arrows and other weapons were being used. Imam Baksh fired bullets. Their swords were left in their hands. Many heads rolled. Many bodies fell on to the earth, suffering. Many were cut from the waist. The warriors swung their swords. Rivers of blood flowed from the bodies. The blood made popping sounds as the wounds bled.
Imam Baksh was a great horse rider. He used his skill to go through the battlefield. He would come close to his target to shoot his rifle. He would strike his spear and sword. He came close to Bhai Nano ji and had a duel. They were both holding swords. They moved their horses to find a chance to strike. Both had shining swords in their hands. Both were skilled in riding their horses. They came close to each other. When Bhai Nano ji swung his sword, Imam Baksh blocked it. Bhai Nano ji swung again and cut Imam Baksh’s left hand off. Imam Baksh kept fighting though. He got angry and swung his sword with all his might. His sword sliced Bhai Nano ji through the shoulder and into the chest. Bhai Nano ji died and fell to the ground. He died a warrior’s death and so the Devatas and fairies from heaven came to get him. Many Sikhs were seen by Imam Baksh. They were fighting with arrows and riffles. Imam Baksh kept fighting with one hand. Whoever came close to him, got killed. Thousands of Turks charged with him. They attacked the Sikhs. A lot of noise arose. The double-beat played on the Nagaras. The bullets and pistols were used. Arrows and swords were used. Axes were used. The Sikhs had to move back as the charge was too fierce.
The Sikhs went to Guru ji and said: “Maharaj, Bhai Nano ji has attained Shaheedi. There is no general on the field right now. The Turks are charging hard. Please send another general. Look how they are advancing with a lot of noise.” Guru ji looked at the field and said to Bhai Piraga ji: “go quickly where Bhai Nano ji died. The fight is fierce there.” Bhai Jagna ji and Bhai Kishan ji were great warriors. They were sent along by Guru ji with Bhai Piraga ji. Many other warriors came and fought hard. The rifles were fired with the pistols. The arrows and spears flew. The Turks did not back down. They charged ahead. Many warriors died on the field. It was a fierce battle. The swords were shining everywhere. Imam Baksh was fighting with bravery. Bhai Jagna ji challenged Imam Baksh. Bhai Jagna ji swung his sword and sliced Imam Baksh’s head like a watermelon. Imam Baksh had set up a post there but Bhai Jagna ji took over that place. They planted the Nishan there. They held that post then. The Sikhs stayed there and did not move back. The Turks wanted to take that post. They took many warriors with them and advanced but Bhai Piraga ji killed them. He caused chaos like a lion attacking a deer herd. Many Pathaans and Mughals were cut to pieces. The Turks kept fighting and didn’t want to lose that post. The Sikhs said: “we are going to push the Turks back.” The Turks wouldn’t move back. The battle was fierce.
Bhai Bidhi Chand ji said to Guru ji: “I wish to go and fight. Please give me permission. Look how strong the battle is. Please assist me and make me push the Turks back.” Guru ji heard this and give him permission: “go and help the Sikhs. Come back after. Don’t stay there too long. Win the post and come back.” Bhai Bidhi Chand ji bowed and went into battle, taking 100 men with him. He killed many as he attacked. Hundreds were killed. The swords were out. Both sides fought hard. There were bodies everywhere. Many had died. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji reached the post. He uprooted the Nishan of the Turks and killed many Turks. Many could not face his sword. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji planted the Nishan of the Guru there. The ones that ran away, did not look back. They ran all the way back to Abdul Khan. They said: “many Pathaans have died. Look how many are running back. The Sikhs have taken our Nishan from the post. There is a fierce battle there. Nobody could face the Sikhs. The battle was fierce. The ones that stayed, died. The Sikhs have taken the post with force. They are advancing now, killing everyone.” Abdul Khan heard this and was shocked. He regretted attacking the Guru now. He started this battle for no reason and had many of his men killed.
Abdul Khan was angry. He called Karam Chand and Rattan Chand forward. He said to them: “why are you standing at the back? By your manipulation, many of my men have died. Why aren’t you fighting at the front? You said to me that the Guru does not have many warriors. You said they were poor beggars. You said they were like “salt in the flour.” What happened now? Look how many of my men these salt grains have killed. 5,000 men along with their 5 generals have been killed. The remaining are running away. They came back and don’t want to fight. They are facing a strong blow at the front. My elder son, Nabhi Baksh, has 2,000 men. Go with my son and fight at the front. Take another 2,000 men that are with me. Do the last charge to win. I will come right behind you. Go to where the Guru is. Go quick. Arrest the Guru or kill him.” Rattan Chand spoke with shock: “there aren’t many Sikhs. You know that too. The Guru has few men. We are shocked at who is actually fighting. Watch us fight now. We will go to the front line. The Sikhs won’t be able to stand in front of us now with 4,000 soldiers.” Nabhi Baksh said to his father: “why are you worried? Don’t worry. They can only fight till I don’t get there. Watch how I kill all the Sikhs. These are low-caste beggars that are gathered into an army. I’ll see how they fight me. I will kill them now. I will capture them. I don’t back down. When the battle happens, nobody can face me. You can come behind me. Take your weapons. Nobody will be able to stand my charge. When they run, you should arrest them. You should go on ahead and stop them from running away. Shoot them to death. Let’s finish this battle and go home. We will eat at home today. Protect your honor and have your glory sung in the world.” Nabhi Baksh said this and advanced with anger. He had a Tulwar and shield in his hands. His spear was very sharp. His eyes were red. He inspired his horse to ride fast. He advanced like a dancer starting off. 4,000 men went with him. It was like a great flood moving. Rattan Chand Gherard was with him on one side. Karam Chand was on the other side. He was giving hope and motivating his men: “we will catch the Guru on the first charge. We will slice through the Sikh army.”
