6-21 Visiting the Goindwal Gurduaras
Guru Amardas ji’s nephew, Baba Saavan Mal ji, had a son named Baba Chand Mal ji. Baba Chand Mal ji came to see Guru ji. He brought Prashaad and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. Guru ji had him sit close to him and asked him how he was.
The Langri came to tell everyone of the Langar being ready: “Maharaj, the Langar is ready.” Guru ji said: “bring it here.” The Sikhs went and brought Guru ji a big plate with Langar. The plate came and was placed on a stool in front of Guru ji. Guru ji said: “have 2 more plates brought.” The 2 other plates of food were brought and placed in front of Baba Sunder ji and Baba Chand Mal ji. The food was great. Everyone else was also given Langar. Everyone ate till satiation. The Sevadaars brought water and washed Guru ji’s hands. They all sat together for a long time, discussing spirituality and history. Guru ji praised Baba Chand Mal ji. At around 10 pm, everyone went to their homes. Guru ji said: “rest now.” Baba Sundar ji and Baba Chand Mal ji folded their hands and said: “we wish to stay with you all night. We want to stay here with you. It is a very fortunate night to be spending with you. We have met after a very long time. We feel peace when we are with you. Your Seva is very hard to find. We want to do your Seva all night long. We will massage your feet.” Guru ji gave both of them a lot of respect. He called for 2 more beds. Baba Chand Mal ji and Baba Sundar ji laid down on their beds. Guru ji said to the rest of the Sangat: “you can all go to your homes now. Rest the night. Come back tomorrow morning. I will meet all of you then.” The Sangat obeyed and went to their homes, doing Simran of Guru ji. They all rested the night.
Guru ji’s bed was very big, to cover the 7 feet height of Guru ji. Baba Sundar ji and Baba Chand Mal ji slept. There were 2 other Sikhs on guard. One massaged Guru ji’s feet and the other waived a fan on Guru ji. Guru ji fell asleep as he hadn’t slept for 2 days. Baba Sundar ji and Baba Chand Mal ji said to each other: “Guru ji fought a big battle. He killed many Turks. There were 7 thousand soldiers the strong Guru killed in 9 hours. The other Gurus were very calm. He keeps weapons and has started a different tradition. He killed many Turks with the weapons. He is really strong and tall. He showed the enemy his strength. He was successful in showing his strength. The Sikhs are blessed who fought for him in the battle. They gave their lives for him. The Sikhs who do his Seva are blessed. Blessed are those who died in battle for him. They went to Sach Khand. They served him alive and in death. Look at these 2 Sikhs here. One his fanning him and the other is massaging his feet. They do his Seva out of love. Chand Mal ji, listen, there is nothing compared to Seva. Seva gives you the highest status of Brahmgyaan. Seva is the highest and gives you all of the gifts of life. All of the Gurus only looked at the Seva to give the Ghaddi. They only gave praise to the Sevadaars. Guru ji won’t let us do his Seva. By doing his Seva we could get everything. He didn’t let us massage his feet. He got us beds to sleep on.” They both spoke about Guru ji to each other. They were both uncle and nephew but close to each other’s age. They kept looking at Guru ji’s face all night long.
When if was around 2:30 am, Guru ji got up from his sleep. He did his biological cleansing routines and took a bath. He recited Gurbani from memory. The Rababis had arrived and started singing the Asa Vaar in Raags. The tarps were laid out and the Divaan was in session. The Shabads were sung in Raags. Amrit was showering from the Keertan. When the sun came out, the Asa Vaar ended. Guru ji and the Sangat bowed their heads. The darkness was gone. Guru ji gave a command: “play the Nagara to move out.” The Nagara was played and the warriors all got ready. Guru ji headed towards Baoli Sahib. The servants and the warriors brought Guru ji’s horse there. Guru ji did not mount his horse. He walked with Baba Sundar ji and Baba Chand Mal ji. He was holding both their hands and having discussions as they walked. The 5 Sahibzadas came and met their father.
The Sangat also came and bathed at the Baoli Sahib. Guru ji gave donations to the Brahmins there. Baba Gurditta ji said to his father: “I would like to hear about the glory of Baoli Sahib. Please tell us how it is.” Guru ji said to his son: “the third Guru had this made. He was our elder. My grandfather did Guru ji’s Seva as well as the Baoli’s Seva. Whoever bathes here on the Pooranmaashi, the sins of many births are washed away. Their wishes are fulfilled. Whoever does Simran of Guru Amardas ji here, their wishes are fulfilled. There are 84 steps here. If one recites Japji Sahib 84 times and bathes after each recitation, they will not go through the 84 Lakhs of lifetimes in different lifeforms. They will go to the dimension of the Guru after they die.” Guru ji said to Baba Sundar ji and Baba Chand Mal ji: “wherever you have seen the places of Guru Amardas ji, take me to all those places. Tell me the history of the places as well.” Guru ji’s chola was very big. He had 2 Teghas in his Gatras. He had golden bracelets and pearl necklaces on. He had a quiver full of sharp arrows hanging from one shoulder and a fierce bow hanging off the other shoulder. After bowing at Baoli Sahib, everyone moved through the narrow streets of Goindwal. These were the blessed streets of Goindwal, where Guru Angad Dev ji, Guru Amardas ji, Guru Ramdas ji and Guru Arjan Dev ji stepped foot.
The people of Goindwal all came to meet Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. Men and women all left their work to see Guru ji. They stood at their doors and showered Guru ji with flowers. They presented money and gifts to Guru ji. Guru ji’s massive body walked through the streets of Goindwal alongside Baba Sundar ji and Baba Chand Mal ji. They were drenched with the love of Guru ji. They walked with Guru ji. The people came out of their houses and bowed. The streets were narrow and so Guru ji’s chola touched both sides of the street. He was big and wide. His chola was big as well.
Baba Sundar ji pointed at a well and said: “this is the well of Guru Ramdas ji.” Everyone took a fistful of Amrit from the well and drank it. They all moved further. Everyone went to the Chabarra Sahib. They saw the peg on the wall where Guru Amardas ji used to stand to do Tapasya all day and night. He would hold the peg when he would get tired. He had it fixed in the wall for this purpose. Guru Amardas ji was six or seven years over a hundred. His body was old but his Tapasya was solid. He loved doing his Japp and Tapp. If he was happy with someone, that person would be blessed. Anyone who he was angry with, would be destroyed. Guru Hargobind Sahib ji saw and bowed at the peg in the wall. Baba Sundar ji and Baba Chand Mal ji then said: “Guru Ramdas ji received the Gurta Ghaddi here. Guru Amardas ji gave him the Tilak here and bowed to him.” Guru ji was happy to see that place. They all folded their hands. Baba Sundar ji said: “this is where your father was born. Do its Darshan. The room is next to the Chabarra. This place is your first home.” Guru ji told the gardener to bring flowers of Jasmine and Reibel. The gardener brought garlands of the flowers. Guru ji put those garlands at all the holy places. He saw his father’s birthplace and bowed to it with love. He threw fistfuls of flowers there. Baba Chand Mal ji put a garland around Guru Hargobind Sahib ji’s neck. Guru ji looked very radiant. The flowers were very white. Everyone was smitten by Guru ji’s radiance.
Everyone then went to Baba Mohan ji’s Chabarra. Baba Sundar ji bowed and said: “Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji came here and took the Gurbani Pothis. He recited the Shabad “Mohan Teray Uchay Mandir” here in chants of Raag Gauri.” Guru Hargobind Sahib ji smiled and listened to the Katha of the elders. Guru ji said: “you are great Baba Sundar ji. You know the whole Katha of Guru ji. Take me to the other holy places.” Baba Sundar ji folded his hands and said: “there are 3 other places to visit. They are near the Beas. Do the Yatra of your elder’s place.” Guru ji sat down and told the family to get ready. They all sat at Chabarra Sahib. Everyone couldn’t get enough of meeting Guru ji.
6-22 From Goindwal to Kartarpur
The mother of Baba Sundar ji took all of the women of the Bhalla family and went to Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. All of the women folded their hands and bowed. They sat down with Guru ji. Getting the permission of Baba Sundar ji and Baba Chand Mal ji, the women folded their hands and said: “please keep your Dhera in Goindwal now. Live here now. Your grandfather lived here for many years. When your father would come here with his family and the Sikhs, he would stay a month or two here. You should keep the same relations and set up your residence here with joy.” The gracious Guru heard this and spoke by giving everyone bliss: “my foundations are here. Guru Amardas ji was my ancestor. By his grace, we were given greatness. He made elephants out of ants. The ones who are fortunate with good karma, they live here and do the Seva of the descendants of Guru Amardas ji. Doing the Seva of the family of Guru Amardas ji, this is a wish of mine. The Gurus were peaceful forms who were amazing and beyond praise. I am in conflict with the Turks. For this reason, a great army is with me and so I can’t stay here. I wanted to. I have thought about this but I can’t. I have thousands of warriors and Sangat.” Hearing this, the elder women said: “what you say is true, but your family, they should live here. Be gracious and have your wives and children live here. When you set up your new home, you can call them then.” Guru ji saw the love in the elders’ hearts and agreed. The servants and maids were to stay as well. Guru ji said: “Chachi ji, the family will stay here along with the servants and maids.” Guru ji then decided to leave Goindwal with his army. Baba Sundar ji and Baba Chand Mal ji were happy to hear Guru ji’s decision. They went to see Guru ji off.
There were 3 places of remembrance near the shores of the Beas. The resting place of Guru Amardas ji, Guru Ramdas ji and Mata Bhaani ji’s were there. Baba Sundar ji took Guru ji there. They walked bare feet there. Guru ji went to his father’s mother’s place and bowed. He thought of his grandmother and then went to the place of Guru Amardas ji. He said his name and did an Ardaas. He asked for his blessings and then went to the resting place of Guru Ramdas ji. The giver of Muti stood there and looked around. There were leaves all over the place with bird droppings. Nobody cleaned up the place of Guru Ramdas ji or the other places. Guru ji said: “why isn’t there a Sikh Sadhoo here to take care of the place? There is no Seva here. For this reason, the Beas will engulf these resting places in time.” These places are not seen in the present. The Beas took them in its waters due to Guru ji’s words. Guru ji’s horse soon came, which he mounted. Baba Sundar ji and Baba Chand Mal ji were happy to see Guru ji’s muscular body. They both bowed their heads by folding their hands. Guru Hargobind Sahib ji bowed to the two Gursikhs as well. Nobody wanted to separate. Guru ji said: “Baba Sundar ji, please stay here and let me go. You should not come along.” The two did not want to leave and walked a distance with Guru ji. Guru ji then called for a ferry and got on top. Baba Sundar ji and Baba Chand Mal ji went as well. They said: “we will leave once you cross the river.” They all had tears in their eyes. Baba Gurditta ji was with them as well. He went along with Guru ji. The rest of the sons stayed in Goindwal. The other warriors boarded ferries and crossed the river. The Sikhs crossed as well on many ferries and canoes. The water was pure and blue. Guru ji praised the river as he crossed. There were many fish, turtles and other animals in the river. There were birds on the other shore, making it look great. Guru ji left Majha and entered Doaba, Kapurthala (in present). Guru ji got off the ferry and spoke with great love: “please let me leave now. Go back to your home.” Baba Sudar ji and Baba Chand Mal ji bowed and went back. Guru ji gave a lot of money to all of the ferrymen.
Guru ji headed towards Kartarpur (near Jallandhar). Mata Kaulan ji was already in Kartarpur. She had been sick ever since she came to Kartarpur. Her illness got worse by the day. The love for the Guru grew in heart as the days went by. She did Simran of the Guru and did not eat during the day. She did not sleep at night, due to the love for the Guru. She would just lay down all day with a cloth on her face. She was ill. She took deep breaths in pain. She wanted to see Guru ji. The Guru’s form was in her heart. Her focus was fully into the Guru. Mata Kaulan ji’s attention had become one with the Guru. Her identity did not exist. She was in pain without the Guru. She got news of the battle. She wondered what the result was. She was worried: “when will you bless me with your form? I don’t want to die waiting for you.” Mata Kaulan ji was getting ill by the day. She was also in pain to be separated from Guru ji. Her body was thin and soft. She would do Ardaas to Guru ji: “please visit me as I die. You are omniscient. You know what every heart is thinking. Listen to my Ardaas, oh Master. Why do you not come? My end time is near. Hundreds of thousands get what they want from you. They sing your praises with faith. I only have faith in you. Come to me at my end time. Visit me while I am still alive. I am thirsty to see you. Give me the Amrit of your sight. I heard you fought a great battle. I don’t know what happened there. I didn’t hear any news. You are the beloved of your servants. Come quickly and visit me.” She did this Simran all day and night. Her eyes were filled with tears all the time. Guru ji knew what Mata Kaulan ji was going through. He knew her end time was near. He wanted to see her while she was alive. He thought: “she is drenched in the love for me. She did Tapasya for 100 births to become my wife.” Guru ji rode his horse faster.
Bhai Painday Khan ji, Bhai Bidhi Chand ji, Bhai Jaati Malik ji were travelling with Guru ji. They had discussions of the battle with each other. They spoke to Guru ji about the battle of how the Turks were killed. The Sikhs that died, they remembered them as well. It was around 5 pm when they all reached Kartarpur. Guru ji entered the city. The people of the area all saw Guru ji and bowed as we came. They came to the place of Tham Sahib. The Guru Bhagwan bowed at Tham Sahib and sat down. The Sodhis of the area came and bowed to Guru ji. They all brought Prashaad. Guru ji spoke to everyone with respect. For an hour everyone came and Guru ji spoke to them.
Where Mata Kaulan ji was waiting for Guru ji, Guru ji went to go see her. Mata Kaulan ji saw Guru ji and her eyes gleamed. She wanted to get up but she couldn’t. She wanted to speak but she couldn’t. Her body was too weak by the illness. She had gone pale and here body was thin. Guru ji gave her support and told her not to get up. Guru ji sat by her bed. Mata Kaulan ji slowly took her hands out and touched Guru ji’s feet. As soon as she touched Guru ji’s feet, tears began to shed from her eyes. She said: “you already know what is in my heart. I don’t need to say anything. You blessed me by coming to me now. You came to see me, I thank you. I have no one besides you, oh Prabhoo. I only have your support in joy or sorrow. I live by the support of your name. I do your Simran day and night. The separation made me anxious. I want to die near you. You came to see me now. I will die without any worries now. You fulfilled all my wishes.” Guru Hargobind Sahib ji heard this and said: “your time is near now. You did a lot of Simran of me. I came to see you because of your love. Your love did not let me rest. I left everything and came to you. It is evening now. Tomorrow evening, you will leave your body. Your soul will go to Akaal Purakh. Do the Simran of Sri Kartaar now. Don’t think of anything else. You have achieved Mukti. You were fortunate from many births. You were in love with Parmeshwar. You have Mukti now. You won’t come back in this world again. You will never be in pain again. Don’t worry about anything now. Your birth is blessed. You have received the highest status.” Guru ji sat for about an hour and spoke to Mata Kaulan ji. Guru ji gave hope to Mata Kaulan ji. Guru ji made Mata Kaulan ji let go of his feet but she didn’t want to let go. She kept trying to touch them. She said: “Satguru, your feet are beloved. I don’t wish to let them go.” She kept looking at Guru ji’s face. She would touch his face and couldn’t get enough of it. Guru ji gave her hope. She said: “when my end time is close, please sit in front of me. I want to die while looking at your face. This is my request. Please fulfill it. You are compassionate and gracious.” Guru ji said: “I will be with you. Stay in bliss. Don’t worry.” Guru ji got up and went to where the other Sikhs were. He sat in the Divaan and gave everyone his Darshan. The benevolent warrior Guru blessed everyone.
6-23 Lion Hunt/ Speaking to Kaulan
Guru ji set up a Divaan in front of Tham Sahib. The Rababis came and sang Shabads. As the city found out of Guru ji’s arrival, the people came to see him. They presented many gifts and bowed their heads. They were very happy to see him. As Guru ji looked at everyone, their wishes were fulfilled. He blessed all. The So Dar started in the evening. After the So Dar was complete, everyone bowed their heads. Guru ji got up and came to his Dhera. He ate as much as he wanted to and laid down on his bed. He spent the night in peace.
Guru ji woke up at Amritvela and bathed. Guru Arjan Dev ji constructed Sri Gangsar Sahib where a well was dug. Bathing here was the same as bathing in the Ganga as per Guru Arjan Dev ji’s blessing. The place was also known as “Shakargang.” Guru Hargobind Sahib ji bathed at Shakargang. He had taken a few of his wise Sikhs with him. They all bowed at the well and bathed. Guru ji sat down in Samadhi there and connected with his real Aatma form. Guru ji then recited Sukhmani Sahib out loud. He recited it with deep love. He did this tradition so the Sikhs would follow him for their salvation. As he sat, the sun came up. There was light everywhere. The Rababis came and began the Chownki. They sang the Bilawal Raag. The Divaan went for some time. The Langris then came and announced the Langar: “Maharaj! The Langar is ready.” Guru ji called for the Langar: “bring it here.” Guru ji ate the Langar.
As Guru ji was eating, a Sikh came and said: “listen Guru Gareeb Nivaaj. To protect the saints the and cows is your duty. There is a lion nearby. It kills many cows and goats. It kills people too. I went this morning, taking my animals to graze the fields, and the lion came and attacked. It killed many of my cows. It is very dangerous. I come to your shelter. Please help us get rid of this fear. The animals don’t go out to eat the grass.” Guru ji gave the Sikh hope and said to his servants: “bring my horse right now.” The Sikh brought Guru ji’s horse right away. Bhai Painday Khan, Bhai Bidhi Chand ji and other warriors got ready. They went along with Guru ji on their horses. Guru ji set off quickly on his horse. 100 warriors followed Guru ji.
The Sikh came with Guru ji in the front. Guru ji said: “where was the lion?” Guru ji went into the jungle. The jungle was dense. It was hard for the horse to go ahead. The Sikh showed Guru ji where the lion was living. Guru ji looked around but the lion could not be seen. Guru ji started to hunt. Many rabbits and boars were killed. Guru ji said to everyone: “find the lion. Scope the area. He may have eaten flesh and fallen asleep. It couldn’t have gone anywhere else. It must be full. It must be sleeping in some bushes. Fire your bullets and wake it up.” The Sikhs fired their bullets. The lion woke up and stretched its body. The lion was really big. Its tail was long with a strong body. The lion yawned and roared out loud. It was sleeping in a thorny bush. The warriors saw the lion and told Guru ji. The strong Guru heard the Sikhs and went to the buses. Guru ji saw the lion. It was hard to get to the bushes. Guru thought about getting off his horse. He got off his horse. He didn’t want to fight on the horse. He took his sword and shield instead of his riffle. There was no place for the horse to move in the bushes. There were thorns everywhere. The lion had a big mouth with big teeth. His claws were huge and ferocious. He lifted his tail and moved it. His mane was long. He showed his mane. There were black streaks on its body, which looked like snakes on a mountain. Its eyes were red. Its chest was big and waist was small. Guru ji stood in front of the lion. Guru ji had a shield in his left hand whose bosses were 25 Sers in weight. Guru ji had a sword in his right hand. Guru ji yelled out: “you coward! Why are you hiding?” Guru ji stood in a stance. The lion roared. The horses of the warriors got scared and moved back. Some urinated and released feces due to fear. The lion pounced like lightening. He opened his mouth. The Sikhs watched on from a distance. The horses moved back. The lion used his strength and jumped with both of its paws. He wanted to press upon Guru ji. As its head came close, Guru ji held the lion’s paws with his shield. Guru ji held the lion with his shield. Guru ji pushed back and stood like a pillar where he was. The lion couldn’t move Guru ji back. Guru ji was in Bir Ras. His eyebrows were up, his lips quivered. Guru ji pushed the lion back and threw it backwards. As the lion tried to stand up, Guru ji swung his Faulaad Sirohi and cut the lion from the waist. The lion was cut into two pieces. The sword got stuck into the ground. The top half of the lion fell down. Guru ji took his sword out of the ground. The Sikhs were amazed to see Guru ji cut the lion like a banana. The lion went to heaven, dying by the hands of Guru ji. Guru ji mounted his horse and hunted other animals.
Guru ji sensed Mata Kaulan ji’s end time and thought of going back to her. He sensed Mata Kaulan ji doing his Simran. He returned from the hunt early for this reason. Mata Kaulan ji was doing the Simran of Guru ji. She was fortunate. She had great love for the Guru in her heart. Guru ji rode his horse fast and came back to the city quickly. He went to Mata Kaulan ji’s home. He got off his horse and went inside. It was around 4 pm when Guru ji gave Mata Kaulan ji his Darshan. Mata Kaulan ji had gone pale. Her eyes were closed. She was focused on the Guru. Her mind was one with the Guru. Guru ji came close to Mata Kaulan ji but she didn’t open her eyes. She could see Guru ji with her mind. Her maid called out to Mata Kaulan ji in a low voice. She shook her arm to break her Samadhi. The maid told her in her ear that Guru ji was here. Her beautiful eyes opened slowly, like the petals of a lotus flower opening up after seeing the sun. She saw the beloved Guru, standing in front of her. She was extremely happy to see Guru ji. She was a sacrifice unto him. She slowly tried to get up. She wanted to touch Guru ji’s feet. Guru ji stopped her but she got up and touched Guru ji’s feet. Guru ji sat close to her and gave her hope. His beloved Bhagat was drenched in love. He said: “I came to you to give you bliss. Get ready. I will make you one with “Anand” today. You only have an hour and a half left. Your Puranas will end. I will stay here till your breaths last. I won’t leave you now. Vidhata made attachments to the body. This does not last forever. The bodies depart. All relations end one day. Whatever we see, is destined to end. Consider yourself as the undying, indestructible Aatma. You are the Aatma, which never dies. It is not born nor does it ever die. It is new, everyday. It is the reason why the world is seen. You are the complete consciousness which is infinite and pure bliss. This world is a myth. The one who is attracted to it, will separate from it one day. That person regrets being attracted to it. The ones who are connected to the truth, they never separate from it. It never comes or goes. There is no woman, man or extra gender. The truth, the Aatma, is ever-existing (Sat), complete consciousness (Chetan), and bliss (Anand). Whoever forgets their real form and love the lifeless things of the world, they will always be in pain. They think they are the body. They will keep taking births and dying. They will be in pain and endure the wrath of the Jumms. For this reason, connect to your Aatma. Forget the existence of your body. Forget the pride of your body. The actions pertaining to the pride of the body result in love and hate. When this dies, when the attachment of the body dies, love and hatred will not exist. You will see yourself as the Brahm and become one with it. It is like pulling the roots. Pulling the roots of a tree causes the branches and the trunk to dry up. Killing the pride and attachment of the body is pulling its root. Everything will all die at once. Pride is the primary reason for the birth and death cycle.” Guru ji gave the Aatma Gyaan to Mata Kaulan ji. He casted a blessed sight on her and destroyed her body’s pride. All of her attachments were broken. She no longer saw herself as the body. She knew the Brahm. Her focus went inwards and the world no longer existed for her. She saw the Aatma form of the Satguru. She received this state by the blessing of the Satguru. She no longer had an ounce of attachment, hatred, ego or pride in her. She thought to herself: “this world was a myth.” Her consciousness entered the Brahm state. Just as the snake is seen in the rope (in the dark), one fears, trembles and runs away from it; that is how the world has put everyone in a state of doubt. Seeing the non-existence as existing, everyone is intrigued by this temporary world. This gives everyone pain. Mata Kaulan ji thought about all of this and was affixed into the Brahm. Her Samadhi was focused into the Gyaan. Her doubt (of being the body) was destroyed.
6-24 Mata Kaulan ji goes to Sach Khand
Just as the effect of intoxications wears off, that is how the concept of ego wore off from Mata Kaulan ji’s mind. She gained the Gyaan and knew her Aatman. She saw the amazing form that she was. Mata ji listened to Guru ji for a half hour. Guru ji gave Mata ji Brahmgyaan. Mata ji closed her eyes and saw her own form. She was in a state of ultimate, unbroken bliss. She stayed like this for an hour. She opened her eyes and saw the Parmeshwar Guru. She said: “you are great oh Guru ji. I am fortunate to have reached the status that Jattis and Brahamachaaris look for, enduring great pain. You showed me that form in a second. You destroyed my ego. I thought I was Kaulan. Today I found out that I am the Nirankar. You are great. Your play is great. I bow to your feet. You gave me the deepest knowledge and destroyed my pain from many births. I am free now.” She bowed her head to Guru ji’s feet. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji said: “Kaulan, your end time is here. Lay on a Kush Asan. Only think of your real form.” The maid laid down a Kush Asan and had Mata ji lay on it. Mata ji kept looking at Guru ji, who lived in her heart. She could no longer speak. She did not blink. Her sight immersed into Guru ji’s form. Her puranas left her body. She was great. She received the highest status. Guru ji saw that she had died and called for her servants. Guru ji said to Mata Kaulan ji’s maid: “prepare for her body’s bath. Take her to the garden. We must do her funeral.”
The maids brought water from Gangsar and bathed Mata Kaulan ji’s body in the garden. Expensive cloths were put over her body. The Rababis came and sang Shabads. Mata ji was buried in the garden there as she was born in the faith of Islam. Her burial ground can be seen in modern times. Satguru ji held a Divaan. Many people came to pay their condolences to Guru ji. Bhai Painday Khan ji came and yelled: “oh mother, you left me!” Guru ji gave him hope and said: “don’t cry over her body. She was a Brahmgyaani.” The other warrior Sikhs came and expressed their regrets. They all sat near Guru ji. Guru ji went to his home as the evening came. Everyone went to their homes.
Guru ji slept the night and woke up at Amritvela. Many days were spent like this in Kartarpur. As people found out about Guru ji coming to Doaba, they all came to Kartarpur. Many came to enlist in Guru ji’s army for work. Guru ji tested them and hired the eligible ones. Guru ji had a battle with the Badshah. Guru ji killed 7,000 soldiers of the Badshah. Guru ji’s praises spread throughout the land because of this. Everyone said: “who could fight the Badshah? The Paharis can’t face him. Who can fight without a fort? Nobody could survive the Badshah’s forces. Amritsar is near Lahore. Guru ji stayed there and made an army to fight the Badshah, living close to the Badshah. Guru ji killed the great Umraavs of the Badshah on the battlefield, one by one. Those Umraavs were strong. The Badshah is scared, seeing Guru ji’s radiance. He didn’t want to fight him again. Guru ji is the best warrior. There is no one like him. There is no one stronger than him. The Emperor is the master of Hindustan. Guru ji didn’t care about him and mixed his forces into the dust. The Fearless One has now come to Doaba.” Guru ji’s praises spread everywhere.
Warriors praised Guru ji. He was their role model. Young men who wanted to fight, came to Kartarpur. They enlisted in the army and lived with Guru ji. Some didn’t take pay. The others only wanted to work for Guru ji. Shaster Vidya was practised everyday. They would go hunting. The warriors tried to practice better than their friends. They would practice rifles, guns, arrows, and horseback riding. They would practice archery on their horses. Guru ji taught them all.
Near Kartarpur, there were many villages where Pathaans lived. They had many weapons with them as they were fighters from many generations. They would come to enlist in Guru ji’s army. They would come and meet Painday Khan and ask for a reference as he was a Pathaan as well. They would come and meet him. Many would come. They would sit and talk about the battle with him: “who fought from Guru ji’s side? Guru ji fought bravely.” Bhai Painday Khan would say: “Guru ji was on this side. He is a powerful warrior. Nobody is better than him. He is too powerful. I am his loyal servant. I fought the battle with all my strength. I cause chaos there. Nobody could fight me. I killed many in the enemy’s army. The battle could not have been won without me. Who else could kill such a big army like that? I would kill a person and the horse with one strike of my sword. I would kill people just be pushing them. I would pull the horses leg and killed them. I killed many with my arrows. I sliced many. The enemy ran away from me. If I wasn’t there, Guru could not have won the battle. He saw me as a strong warrior. He keeps me close and respects me. He knew that I can give victory. My biceps have victory in them. Who can face me?” Painday Khan would praise himself to his people. He became egotistical. Satguru ji knew about this. He knew that Painday Khan had become egotistical and that he couldn’t handle his greatness. Painday Khan was not humble or patient. Guru ji thought to himself: “this ego will be bad for him.”
There was a village named Chota Mir close to Kartarpur, where many Pathaans live. Painday Khan was from that village. One of the families sent a marriage proposal for Painday Khan. Guru ji accepted the proposal for Painday Khan and spent a lot of money for his “Nikah.” Painday Khan was happy to be married. He lived with his wife in Chota Mir at night. One day he said to Guru ji with his hands folded: “I still don’t have a home to live in with my wife. I am married now. I need a home. It is not nice to live in other’s homes.” Guru ji agreed with Painday Khan. Guru ji gave him a lot of money and had a house built for Painday Khan in Chota Mir. The house was beautiful. Guru ji got a lot jewellery made for Painday Khan’s wife and gave them a lot of money. Guru ji paid for all the pots and furniture. Painday Khan was very happy to receive all that. He lived there with his wife. He was living there in peace.
Guru ji knew that Painday Khan had become egotistical and didn’t want him close by him so much anymore. Guru ji said to Panday Khan: “stay in your home now. Came here sometimes. I will call you when I need you. Don’t worry about anything here. Live in your home with joy.” Painday Khan obeyed and stayed in his home for most of the time. He would come once a week. He got more egotistical after receiving so much money from Guru ji. Satguru ji kept track of Painday Khan’s needs. He didn’t let him have any type of shortage. The expensive gifts would go to Painday Khan.
The villages near Kartarpur, the people heard of Guru ji and came to see him. They would bring expensive gifts. The Sangat would come all day long. They bowed after presenting rare and valuable gifts. They bowed to Guru ji’s lotus feet. The Mevra would do the Ardaas for the Sikhs. The wishes of the Sikhs would be fulfilled. The Sikhs would stay there at night and then go back home after a few days. All day, there were crowds of Sikhs near Guru ji. Many warriors and servants would stay with Guru ji. The ones that wanted to learn Shastervidya, they would enlist. Guru ji would buy horses for the warriors. Many Sikhs would buy horses, weapons, rifles and bows for Guru ji. Guru ji would pay them for it. Guru ji would instruct the blacksmiths to make arrows out of good iron. There were many blacksmiths in Kartarpur that made Khappars, Sailays and other weapons. Bullets were made by the goldsmiths. They would prepare them and keep with in the armoury. A lot of gunpower was called for from other lands. Everything was kept with care, as gunpowder couldn’t get wet. The riffles, “Namaskarni,” were brought by merchants to Kartarpur. Guru ji would pay them a lot of money and buy the riffles. Guru ji would give the better warriors the better weapons. The Sikhs were excellent marksmen. Shastervidya was practiced everyday. Satguru ji was happy to see all this. The Sikhs shouted out Jaikaras: “we will kill the Turks and loot Lahore. We will take the kingdom from the Malaich. They are sinners and their kingdom has gotten big. Guru ji, command us to go now and fight the Turks. We will win them now.”
6-25 The Pathaan Hakam becomes a Sikh
Satguru ji went hunting everyday along with his warriors. The whole army went. They practiced Shastervidya. They killed many animals in the jungle. The wild animals of the jungle were killed like cheetahs, jaguars and bears. Those animals bothered the farmers. The farmers were relieved after Guru ji hunted the area of wild animals. There was peace everywhere. The farmers took their animals out, fearlessly. The thieves and dacoits were scared in the area of Guru ji. They left the area. The people of the area praised Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. It was like the kingdom of Satyuga. The bad people left. The Doaba area praised Guru ji. The villages all sang Guru ji’s praises. The young men stopped enlisting in the Badshah’s army and went to Guru ji instead. The ones who wanted to learn Shastervidya, they came to Guru ji.
One day, Sri Satguru Bhagvan ji took Painday Khan with him and went to the garden. There were beautiful plants and trees there. There was nice shade there. It looked like a mountain of sapphires. There were red fruits, yellow fruits and greenery everywhere. Many colours could be seen there. It was a beautiful mountain. Guru ji was like a lion going through a cave. The shade made it look like it was night. The flowers looked like stars. Guru ji was like the moon there. Guru ji roamed the area slowly. He reached the south side of the garden where there were many peacocks singing there. Many flowers bloomed there. There were lemons, Naarangs, Jamuns, and mangoes there. Apricots, guavas, peaches were pulling the branches down. Pomegranates and jasmine were there. Savuti flowers were blooming. The Sikhs laid down tarps for Guru ji. Guru ji sat down there in joy. The warriors came there and a Divaan was in session. Painday Khan was sitting next to Guru ji. Guru ji called for the Chauper game. Painday Khan was seated in front. Guru ji played and won many plays. He threw the dice and moved the pawns forward. Guru ji played for a while in the garden. Guru ji won every play.
An Umarov Pathaan came in that same time. He had been fired from the Badshah’s army and came to Guru ji. The Badshah had sent him on a mission with a big army to receive tax from the Paharis. He fought the Paharis with swords and bullets. The Turks lost the battle. The Pathaan ran away from the Paharis and went back to Shah Jahan. He cried to the Badshah about his failed mission. The Badshah was angry hearing the story and said to the Umarov: “you shameless coward! You should have died in battle. Get out of my sight! You are a coward. Get lost!” He was classified a coward and fired. The Badshah didn’t keep him with him. The Pathaan was upset and wanted to see Guru ji. He had his sword and shield with him. He still had his ego though. Guru ji knew of the Pathaan’s ego. Guru ji thought to himself: “he’s a coward with pride.” The Pathaan stood in front of Guru ji and did not bow. Guru ji did not look towards the Pathaan. He was purposely focused on the Chauper game. He kept throwing the dice and moving his pawns. The Pathaan was hoping to be acknowledged and respected. He thought to himself: “when Guru ji looks towards me, I will give him my Salaam and sit down.” The Pathaan stood there for a half hour. The Pathaan got angry and lost his patience. He thought to himself: “I have been disrespected. I will take his head off with one strike. He didn’t even look at me.” When he thought about using his sword, Guru ji looked at him and said: “you call yourself a warrior? You run away from battles. You should have taken your sword out in battle. You showed your back there. You were to kill the enemy there. You were scared and ran away. You should bow in front of Fakirs but you want to use your sword towards them. You should have been killed by the enemy. I would have praised you. If you would have died in battle, only you would have died. If you get cursed by a Fakir, your whole family dies. The joy in this world and the next all burn away. Fakirs can destroy all joys. Where you were supposed to show your pride, you became a coward. Where you were to bow, you wanted to take your sword out there. You show pride to the Fakirs. You are holding your sword to kill a Fakir. There is no place for pride in the Guru’s home. The Guru only likes humility.” The Khan heard this and was amazed. He thought to himself: “he knew what I was thinking. He knows my whole story.” He became humble and folded his hands. He fell to his knees and bowed to Guru ji. He said: “you are full of power. I didn’t know your greatness. Forgive me, Prabhoo. You are powerful and the master of the Meeree and Peeree. Forgive my mistake. Make me the servant of your feet. Let go of all my mistakes and see my plea. I beg for your mercy. I am full of mistakes. Peers have always forgiven the likes of me.” Guru ji saw the Pathaan’s humbleness and became compassionate. Guru ji had the Khan sit next to him and made him into a Sikh. Guru ji said: “stay humble in front of all Fakirs. Don’t go to a saint’s home with pride. Do their Seva and you will be happy. Do the Simran of Satguru and you won’t be born again.” The Khan became a Sikh.
Guru ji won the game and got up. He came to his Dhera and ate. Guru ji gave food to the Khan as well. The Khan stayed for 2 days. He was drenched in love, listening to Keertan and doing Simran. He praised Guru ji all the time. He thought of Guru ji’s virtues. One day, he sat near Guru ji. Guru ji looked at him and said: “go to your home now. You will get your old status again. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji has blessed you. You will get all your wealth and job back.” The Khan was happy to hear this and bowed to Guru ji over and over again. He obeyed and went home.
After 4 days at home, the Shah said in his court: “that Khan was an old Umarov. So what if he lost and ran away? He is an old soldier of mine. He has won many battles for me. He was a good soldier. Call him back.” A messenger was sent to call the Pathaan. He was received with greater respect than before. The Badshah understood that he was disrespected in his court the last time and so he gave his income and status back. He was promoted. By the Guru’s compassion, the vulture/jackal had become a lion. He did the Simran of Guru ji all the time.
Guru Hargobind Sahib ji lived in Kartarpur and did many tasks. He would roam the gardens and hunt in the jungles. It was Saavan and so the rains came. Many thundering clouds came and ran in the sky. The ground was green and full of joy. The “cheechvohatis” were passing through which looked like red dots on a blue blanket. The ground looked like it was wearing a green chunni. The water roared in the river current. Satguru ji was in Kartarpur. Doing his Simran washes all the sins away.
