6-11 Nanda Mirza Beg battle
Guru ji said to Painday Khan: “go and destroy the Turk army. They will all have to die. We need to strategize this. There are few Sikhs with me, the Turks are many. We need to kill the Turks now. Go to the south side and face them, Painday Khan. Prepare your rifles and fire at them. I will go to the battlefield as well. I will strike them hard. The Malesh have come to fight us. They are advancing. We need to kill them. Attack the enemy like a hawk attacking a pheasant. Cause chaos where you go.” Guru ji sent Painday Khan towards the southern flanks. Guru ji attacked head on. The Nagaras and conches sounded. Dhols and Ransinghas sounded. The rifles were ready to fire. They fired on to the enemy. They shot two bullets at once. Some held a spear and some released arrows. Some held Saangs. Guru ji rode his horse fast. The Sikhs were in Bir Ras. They were angry at the Turks. Guru ji held his ferocious bow and filled his quiver with sharp and scary arrows. The attack was hard. Many limbs and heads were on the ground. The bullets all fired at once. Painday Khan’s regiment showered bullets like lightening falling on the mountains. The bullets made the heads explode like clay pots breaking. The bullets exploded through the chests. Some broke their arms and their swords fell. Some pierced hearts; some broke legs. They limped their way back. It was the top of the summer. They asked for water but fell asleep forever. Thousands died. Many injured laid on the ground and wanted to go to shade. It was a loud noise. Both sides fought each other and did not want to back down.
Guru Hargobind Sahib ji, the great warrior, came to where the battle was fierce. He took his thick khappra arrows and released them. They went flying, looking like king cobras. It was like a snake hissing. They struck the Mughals in the body. They went right through them, killing many in their path. They would go through the bones as well. Gurdev ji showered his arrows, one after the other. Chaos erupted on the field. Warriors were falling and dying. Horses neighed and had no one their backs. The warriors were falling. They were hit with bullets. The injured yelled out in pain. Many died by weapons and many got trampled by the horses. The horses were of great breeds with beautiful saddles. They were running around without people. Some horses died.
Mughlas Khan heard that Guru ji had entered the battlefield: “he is releasing arrows himself. The whole army is attacking the Guru. Swords are being swung. The front side of our army is being blown away by the Guru. Some are moving back from his arrows. He will destroy the whole army in little time. He fights with skill and focus.” Mughlas Khan heard this and said to his 5,000 soldiers: “everyone, attack! Use deceit to arrest the Guru. Capture him! This will fulfill our mission. Surround him from all around. When he will be captured, the Sikhs will all die. We thought he ran away last night. He is here now. Khuddah has sent him to us. Let’s capture him and take him to the Badshah. He will be happy then.” The soldiers heard this and picked up their weapons. They rode their horses and attacked the Guru. They said: “get the Guru! Khuddah is with us! Arrest the Guru alive. We need the Baaz as well. The Shah will be happy and reward us. The Guru has only a few warriors. How long will they last? They are like salt in the flour. Let’s attack all at once.”
The Turks came to the battlefield and killed many. They fired their guns with gunpowder. They loaded 2 bullets into the double-barrels and rammed them with the ramrod. They fired the rifles which made popping noises. They exploded heads and chests. 5,000 soldiers attacked at once. Guru ji’s arrows caused chaos. Whoever got hit, died instantly. The horses ran, the bullets showered and hit everyone. Charges happened upon charges. The warriors fell to the ground like they were tired. Many died right away. Many regretted that they were hit. 5,000 soldiers attacked with their bullets. It was chaos. It was like clouds in the month of Chet, hailing on the ground (hail in Chet is bad for the crops). The soldiers were like the crops in Chet. They were killed by the bullets. Many died. Guru ji’s arrows were flying like the wind. The enemy began to fall. The army split into two and ran right and left. Guru ji had a clear path in the middle. His bow was fierce. He released the arrows pulling them to his ears. His horse rode like the lightening. He did not stay in one place, deflecting the bullets and arrows. He went where there were more of the enemy soldiers. Many died jumping off their horses. Only one arrow hitting them killed them. Horse and men, all died by Guru ji’s arrows. If someone was hit, they didn’t know where they were. Seeing Guru ji’s arrows flying like an oil drip, one after the other, Mughlas Khan saw hundreds of his soldiers dying at once. Nobody could face Guru ji. Many warriors died. They were losing their morale. The Syeds, Shiekhs, Khans, and Mughals got ready and said to each other: “look at that! There is no big army. Surround them now!” They grinded their teeth and attacked in anger. They charged at Guru ji but Guru ji was like a strong pillar. He did not move. He showered his arrows. Whoever came close, they died. Like lightening hitting and destroying minarets, that is how the Turks fell by Guru ji’s arrows. He pulled the arrows to his ears. His arms were very long. His arrows had a lot of momentum. He killed countless. He had already sent Painday Khan to the south.
Guru ji moved back as a strategy. The Turks thought they were successful in pushing Guru ji back. They attacked hard with their bullets and arrows. Many rifles fired at once. It sounded like lighting and thunder. They attacked with great motivation. It was their death bringing them to Guru ji. They would say: “the Guru is running away! Get him! Make sure he doesn’t get away! Surround him! Go and attack hard. He killed many of our men. Make sure he doesn’t leave now.” They yelled at each other and pulled their swords out. They flashed in the sun’s rays like lightening in the sky.
Seeing Guru ji’s state, Bhai Takhtoo ji and Bhai Jait ji said: “Guru ji, you came back. The morale of the Turks has gone up. They are attacking hard. They have pushed our people. They will push us out of the filed. Guru Gareeb Nivaaj, give us hope so we may kill them.” Sri Guru Hargobind ji was a brave and powerful warrior. He said to the Sikhs: “let them come. This is my strategy. I came back on purpose. I gave them a chance to come forward and increase their morale. We will kill them at once. Just like a pot is broken with a stick; we will fire our rifles and kill them. Just stay ready. The battle will change into our favour in a few moments. Watch the real battle now.” As Guru ji spoke, Bhai Painday Khan ji came with Bhai Bidhi Chand ji. They came and attacked the army as per the previously discussed strategy with Guru ji. It was a slap on the faces of the Turks. They were showered with bullets. It was like popcorn popping. The rifles fired by the fearless warriors. Two bullets fired at once. The enemy jumped as the died. Many noises were heard. Spears pierced chests. Spears were picked up, spun and thrown through the chests. The swords were out. They shined like lightening, limbs were cut. Nobody backed down. The strikes came without notice. The weapons were struck. The two armies charged and pushed each other. The ones that stood, they were hit and pushed to the ground. They went to heaven. They yelled, killed and were killed. Painday Khan attacked with his sword. He sliced the warrior and horse in one strike. Whoever came in front of him, was killed.
Bhai Jaati Malik Purohit ji (son of Bhai Singha Purohit ji) killed many. Bhai Nanda ji and Bhai Piraga ji unsheathed their swords. They attacked the enemy and cut them, flying on their horses. They killed whoever came in front of them. It was a fierce battle. The Kaljognis laughed out loud. They filled their pots with blood and drank it. They clapped and danced in joy. The ghosts and Prayts ate the flesh and drank the blood of the warriors. They said: “Guru ji has given us a lot of food today.” They wore the intestines in their necks like garlands and danced with joy. There was chaos with the battle. Kaali Mata (death) ate flesh and drank the blood. She danced the “Tandav” (dance of death) on the field. The vultures came and took the intestines. The crows shrieked.
Bhai Nanda ji took his sword and came in front of Guru ji. He attacked the Mughals in Bir Ras and wanted to impress Guru ji. He sliced the ones that stood in front of him. He sliced them in two. He cut many. The Turks eventually surrounded him and fired many bullets. Bhai Nanda ji’s horse died. Many tried to kill the lone Bhai Nanda ji. Bhai Nanda ji deflected all of the strikes. He kept cutting the Turks but his sword broke. Mirza Beg was on his horse. Bhai Nanda ji grabbed his leg and threw him off his horse. Mirza Beg was on the ground now. Bhai Nanda ji wanted Mirza Beg’s sword. Mirza Beg tried to defend himself. Bhai Nanda ji began to wrestle Mirza Beg. They wrestled with each other. They began to box with fists. The other soldiers stopped fighting and began to watch the duel between Mirza Beg and Bhai Nanda ji. Both Mughals and Sikhs watched the match. Sometimes they boxed and sometimes they slapped each other. They threw each other down and wrestled. They used their full strength. They both wanted to win. Their faces and eyes were red. Their arms and legs were wrapped around each other in a fight for life. The Turks sent more men and fired bullets. Many bullets hit Bhai Nanda ji and Mirza Beg. They both were killed with the bullets. Both of their bodies fell to the ground. They both boarded a vessel and went to heaven for being such brave warriors.
6-12 Tota, Tiloka, Ananta, Nihaloo Die
The battle raged on from both sides of the battlefield. The riffles fired all at once. Many warriors fell. Some ran away from the field. Guru Hargobind Sahib ji’s great warriors sliced and destroyed the other army. Two warriors: Bhai Uday ji and Bhai Daoo ji from Hari came. Bhai Ameeya Hayer ji, Bhai Randhawa Moroo ji, Bhai Mohan ji, Bhai Gopala ji, Bhai Jaita ji, Bhai Tota ji, Bhai Kishan ji, Bhai Nihaloo ji, Bhai Piraga ji, Bhai Takhtoo ji, Bhai Dyaal ji, Bhai Tiloka ji, Bhai Dheera ji, Bhai Devi Das ji, Bhai Ananta ji, Bhai Heera ji and Bhai Paira ji were all the officers of the Guru’s army. Bhai Jaati Malik ji was the Purohit of the Sodhis. Bhai Jetha ji and Bhai Bidhi Chand ji were great warriors. Bhai Painday Khan ji was the strongest of them all. Bhai Babak Rababi ji was a great marksman and excellent Shastervidya practitioner. They were all full of Bir Ras. They were motivated to see the battle. They were fearless warriors. The swords were swinging with full force.
Lutfullah Khan was a brave warrior who was respected by Shah Jahan. Ismail Khan was an excellent fighter. Pathaans: Dunday Khan, Bahadhur Khan; Syed: Didar Ali; Beghs: Bali Begh, Dal Begh; these were the officers of the Mughal army with the thousands of soldiers. When the fight started, they all charged with their chests out.
The two Sikhs of the Guru: Bhai Bidhi Chand ji and Bhai Painday Khan ji were full of anger. The Mughals came like a tsunami. The two Sikhs caused chaos within the Mughals like a crocodile within the ocean. They fired their guns and showered their bullets. When the enemy came close, they took out their spears. They attacked the enemy like a hawk attacks its prey, being hungry. They caused chaos. Bodies fell everywhere. The mounted soldiers were killed. They pierced the chests of the enemy with their long spears. The Sikhs had strong steeds as they charged. They were able to just punch some away. Bhai Painday Khan would just kick the enemy and throw them away. They would die as soon as they were hit.
Bhai Painday Khan ji was angry. He left his horse and held a sword and shield. His shield was 25 Sers heavy. He went into the army lines and caused chaos. He sliced many with his swords. He punched many with his shield. He would kick some in the chest. Nobody would survive his blow. Painday Khan killed hundreds. He put his sword back in its sheath. His right hand was empty. He only had a shield. He grabbed a horse by the leg and swung it around. He was killing people without weapons. People saw this and got scared. The Mughals backed down. They wanted to shoot at him from a distance. When the bullets came, Painday Khan jumped on top of a horse and got away. He was fearless. He took his rifle and began to fire it.
The Pathaans were angry and came back. The Pathaans fired their rifles. Guru ji was on his horse and advanced. The Sikhs were motivated seeing Guru ji. They all attacked the enemy. Many soldiers and horses died. The dead all went to heaven on vessels. The heads rolled. They yelled: “kill them!” They roared and shouted jaikaras. Their bodies were pierced in the shoulders, hands, and fingers. The heads rolled. Some had shattered thighs and knees. The Kaljognis, vultures and dogs came to eat the flesh. The carnivorous birds came to eat the flesh. There was flesh and blood everywhere. It was a scary scene. Intestines were everywhere with bloody vomits. Some soldiers were stuck between chariots and some were dying. The warriors fought with swords.
Guru Hargobind ji released many arrows to kill the enemy. His bow was 9 Tonkas (225 Kg pull strength) and could fire 7 miles away. The arrows had tips of faulaad. It would pass at least 10 people. It went through everyone. Whoever was struck by those arrows, they could not take a second birth. The field was full of bodies. The big and strong warriors clashed and died. They yelled, fought, killed and did not accept defeat. The Pathaans came with pride. They came towards the Guru’s army with force. Their leader said: “get the Guru! He only has a few Sikhs now.” The Pathaans charged at Guru ji.
Bhai Tota ji and Bhai Tiloka ji were filled with anger. Bhai Ananta ji and Bhai Nihaloo ji also came. The four came to where the thousands of Pathaans were coming. The 4 of them took their men and stopped the Pathaans. The fired their bullets with their regiment and killed many. The enemy fell from their horses like minarets destroyed by lightening. Their skulls exploded like a clay pot falling. The Sikhs loaded and fired their rifles again. The Pathaans, wearing their Shamla Pugris, came to fight. Their chests were pierced. Their swords were blunted. There were rifles firing from both sides. The warriors fell from the horses like ripe fruit falling from the tree. The Khans fought. Rohailas and Dowzhi all came to attack Guru ji. They wanted to get Guru ji. Bhai Nihaloo ji and Bhai Tiloka ji came in front. They fired at the Pathaans. They stopped them. Bhai Ananta ji and Bhai Tota ji took out their swords. The charges came. The swords were swung. They pushed each other. They were playing war. The spears broke chainmail and shields. Khandas, spears and swords cut the bodies. The Nagaras played the double-beat. The dhols were being played, which inspired the warriors. The swordsmanship was at its height. Bhai Tiloka ji ran fast and faced Bali Begh. He sliced him in two with his sword. Bali Begh was sliced from head to waist. His brother saw this and struck Bhai Tiloka ji with his spear. He was hit in the neck and fell to the ground. Bhai Tota ji came to Bali Begh’s brother and said: “wait there!” He fired his rifle and exploded his head. Bali Begh’s brother died as well.
Zain Khan saw two of his comrades die and came to avenge them. He said: “they killed two of our best officers.” He came to Bhai Tota ji and said: “where are you going?” Bhai Tota ji took his sword and struck Zain Khan’s neck. His head and body fell. When the Mughals saw that 3 of their officers died, they all fired at Bhai Tota ji. Bhai Tota ji finally fell. Bhai Ananta ji and Bhai Nihaloo ji roared like lions. They swung their swords and killed many enemy soldiers. They killed many Pathaans. It was chaos. Limbs were cut and fell to the ground. The Pathaans were dying. When the Mughals saw these two Sikhs, they came charging at them. Guru ji shouted out a Jaikara in joy, seeing the Sikhs fighting. He said: “great work! Shaabaash!” Bahadur Khan noticed the two Sikhs killing his people. He brought his regiment and showered many bullets. He killed many Sikhs like a magician. Guru ji was standing with courage. He called out to his Sikhs and said: “kill these Malesh!” The Sikhs came running at the Mughals. They pulled out their swords and caused chaos with anger. It was like the lightening in the black clouds of Bhadron. The Sikhs’ swords flashed. They had blood on them. It was like the tongue of death, which was chewing the Paan betelnut. Bahadhur Khan challenged the Sikhs. Bhai Nihaloo ji and Bhai Ananta ji got surrounded. Bhai Nihaloo ji attained martyrdom and fell. When Bhai Ananta ji saw this, he wanted to avenge his death. He struck Bahadhur Khan and took his arm off. Blood came from his cut limb. He fainted and fell to the ground. The Pathaans got together and killed Bhai Ananta ji. He attained martyrdom as well. The 4 warrior Sikhs were killed. The Mughals thought they could win after the 4 Sikhs fell.
6-13 The Battle of Logarh Continues
The fierce battle raged on. The swords were shining in the hands of the warriors. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji was filled with Bir Ras like a lion. He released many arrows. Many cowards ran away from Guru ji. They couldn’t face Guru ji. Guru ji’s sharp arrows had strong joints. They had the feathers of the Kankh bird. They had gold on them. They were released from the 9 Tonka bow. Whoever was hit, they died right away. They arrows went right through the bodies. Guru ji was very fast in mounting an arrow and releasing it. It was too fast to look it. The arrows flew making hissing noises like a king cobra. It was like a hooded cobra that would go through many at a time. He killed many. Guru ji was a brave warrior. He made it rain arrows. He would shout out at the enemy when firing. It was like Inder’s bow in Guru ji’s hands. The arrows flew with his anger. His horse danced like a peacock. Rivers of blood flowed. The Kaljognis, crows and vultures were given blood to drink.
Bhai Painday Khan ji, Bhai Bidhi Chand ji, Bhai Mohan ji and Bhai Gopala ji were brave warriors. Bhai Piraga ji, Bhai Paira ji, Bhai Takhtoo ji and Bhai Jaati Malik ji ripped the chests of the enemy. Bhai Devi Das ji and Bhai Kishna ji were the greatest warriors. Bhai Udhay ji, Bhai Daoo ji, Bhai Dyaal ji, Bhai Bhagoo ji, Bhai Bhatoo ji, Bhai Heera ji and Bhai Dheera ji were fighting on the field. Bhai Chajoo ji, Bhai Gajoo ji, Bhai Moroo Randhawa ji and Bhai Daya Chand ji attacked the enemy. There were many great warriors that couldn’t be mentioned. They all attacked with courage and strength. They were fearless lions roaming a herd of elephants. They fired many bullets and struck with their spears. They released many arrows, killing thousands of Turks. The Sikhs would challenge the Turks and kill them. They did not accept defeat.
Karim Beg came with a great regiment. Rahim Beg and Ali Beg along with Jung Beg came. Shamsher Beg also came to attack the Sikhs. Khwaja Beg, Mauj Beg, Hyaat Beg, Sultan Beg came with anger. Mughlas Khan sent these men to fight. He wanted to win the battle by evening: “charge hard and finish the battle!” Kayam Khan, Ismail Khan, Lutphulla Khan, Inayat Khan, Kalander Khan, Mohammed Khan and Salaabat Khan attacked. Ilmaasih Khan, Jahaan Khan, Daulat Khan, Mudhuarfa Khan, and Haider Khan came with pride. Syed Didar Ali came with many other warriors. They all came with anger. Mughlas Khan said to them: “you all have big ranks with big incomes; the Emperor respects all of you. You have Jageers and incomes for your pleasures. Your Emperor needs you. Go and attack the Guru. Why aren’t you fighting at the front? Go to the front. You are worried about your life. You are back-stabbing the Emperor. You are deceiving the salt given to you by the Emperor. The Sikhs are few. You are many. You are skilled in warfare. You have better horses than the Sikhs. Where will you run to if you back down? Think about your family’s honor. If you don’t return the Badshah’s favours, what else will he need you for? This is a small task for you. The Guru has a small army. We are 10 times bigger than the Guru’s army. The Guru is still standing. You couldn’t capture him. What honor will you have left? You won’t be feared if you fail now. Go and arrest the Guru. Kill him otherwise. If you can’t do either, then go and die. This is how we will be honored.” Didar Ali Syed heard this and said: “The Guru’s arrows are sharp and ferocious. They pierce many as they go through men. He doesn’t let anyone stand in front of him. He kills 3 or 4 with one arrow. The ones who are hit, they can’t even breathe another breath. Painday Khan is a brave warrior. He is causing chaos. He slaps a person and kills them. Nobody can take his blow. You say the Guru has a small army and we have a big army. That small army has killed half our army. Go to the front and see how many of our dead soldiers are piled up. Thousands of Pathans and Mughals have died. The Guru’s name is scary for us. His name destroys our morale.” Mughlas Khan heard this and got mad. He said: “I will go myself.”
When Mughlas Khan went, his left eye twitched and he felt unmotivated. He felt his death coming. The fool dragged himself to go to the front. Seeing the head general coming the front, the soldiers felt inspired and followed their leader. They all attacked at once. They fired their bullets. There was a lot of smoke. They were like black clouds. The bullets rained like hail. They pierced the bodies of the soldiers. The heads, arms and legs broke. Guru ji was standing with joy. He was full with Bir Ras. His eyes were red. Bhai Jaati Malik ji, Bhai Bidhi Chand ji and Bhai Painday Khan ji were told by Guru ji: “great work! The whole army of the Turks is here. Grab your rifles and shoot together. The rifle is deserving of the obeisance. It makes the enemy bow to it when they die. Release your arrows. Fight with rifles and arrows first. Afterwards, cut them with your swords. Scold them to death. Don’t separate from each other. Kill everyone. Don’t go back now. Their strength is done. Their strength has been taken by Guru Nanak Dev ji. We can kill them now. Guru Nanak Dev ji is with us. Victory is yours now.” Seeing the Turks, the Sikhs charged with Guru ji in their heart. They heard Guru ji’s command and attacked. Guru ji had already said the Turks will lose now. The Sikhs had faith and charged ahead. Their rifles fired. The Mughals and Pathaans came in front and fired back.
The warriors were filled with anger. The warriors fought against each other. The Sikhs were standing like strong pillars. The bullets rained and made the enemy tremble. A great battle raged on. The warriors fought with bravery. Nobody backed down. A lot of dust flew. Many died. The soldiers fought with Bir Ras. Their eyes were red and their eyebrows were high. Nobody backed down after being struck many times. When they fell, the fairies came to marry them. The faces of the fairies were radiant like the moon. Their eyes were beautiful. Their hearts were filled with love as they took the soul of the warriors. They were looking forward to marrying the soldiers.
The soldiers guided their horses on the field. They went to the enemy. They saw where the battle was fierce and went there. Guru ji would release his arrows and kill many where the battle was strong. His arrow had killed 25 people at once as the highest recorded. They would go right through the people like being bitten by a snake. The battle was scary. There was blood and guts everywhere. The scavengers came to eat. Both sides charged at each other. They cut each other and killed many. Sirohis and Halabhis swung. Janabhis of Faulaad; Khandas and Saifs were striking. The swords broke, the chainmail clanked while breaking. Spears were broken. The blood came out like they were playing Holi. Arms and shoulders were cut. Heads rolled. Fingers were cut along with feet. Nobody moved forward. The ones who were cut, did not get up again. The enemy had their chests pierced. The bodies piled on top of each other. The heads exploded. The soldiers entangled themselves with each other. The Saangs and Tulwars were sung. Many were killed. Chests were sliced like a carpenter sawing a piece of wood. Many bullets were fired. A lot of blood fell. The hilts of the swords were stuck in the hands. Just as one trims a bush, that’s how the arms were cut. The dead looked like they were sleeping. When the soldiers were hit with bullets, the blood flowed out. There were horses without soldiers. The soldiers were drenched in blood. It looked like a garden full of red flowers. It was like the red evening sky. The swords looked like lightening flashes. This battle is hard to describe. Many died. The battlefield was full of dead. It was hard to ride the horse through the bodies.
The battle was fought with swords. It was a great battle. The Turks were in trouble. They only had swords. Some had only the swords with golden hilts. Their swords broke. Their hands lost strength. They knew they weren’t going to live. Their minds had become numb. They lost their senses and couldn’t cut a hair. They only rode on their horses. They had their swords but didn’t know what to do with it. The Turks said to each other: “the metal has deceived us. We are missing all our strikes. The Sikhs have inexpensive swords but they are sharper than ours. They slice like a wire.” The Sikhs were happy to be winning. The Turks were tired. They had fought for 9 hours. They didn’t eat or sleep. When the battle was fought with swords, Guru ji’s Maya put attachment on the enemy.
The enemy were hungry, tired and Guru ji was angry with them. Their bodies had gone numb. They were powerless. The Sikhs had strength. The 7,000 soldiers were all killed. The ones that remained, they ran away with fear. When the battle went on for 2 more hours, the soldiers began to run away. They were satiated with war. The Sikhs were better rested. They had the blessings of Guru ji. The Sikhs fought with bravery and courage. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji and Bhai Painday Khan ji killed many with one strike.
6-14 The Messenger comes
When many of the Mughals and the Pathaans were killed, Guru ji gathered his army. He ordered the injured to be taken back. Mughlas Khan was standing in one place. He was extremely worried and upset. His remaining army had lost. They were tired and didn’t want to fight anymore. He gathered his soldiers and called one of his messengers. He gave him instructions to go to Guru ji. The messenger took off his weapons to perform parley with Guru Hargobind Sahib ji.
The messenger came to Guru ji and folded his hands. He bowed and said: “Guru Sahib, please listen to my message. I have been sent by Mughlas Khan. He has sent me with a message which will be good for you: we have fought enough. Please let go of the wish to fight any further. Give the Baaz of the Emperor back to him. You can’t hide from him in any place. You can’t run away. Why do you want to give your life for no reason? What will you gain from fighting and dying? The Badshah has hundreds of thousands of soldiers. How can you compare to him? Look how small this Baaz is. Why are you causing yourself so much damage for it? Just think that you made a mistake. Come meet Mughals Khan. He will have you forgiven. Mughlas Khan will take you to the Badshah and call a truce. The crime that you have committed, we will have you pardoned. The city and villages that you have as the Jageer, you can continue to enjoy the incomes. Everything can be fixed still. Think what is best. Only a few soldiers have died. Think about the well-being of your Sikhs. Think about all this. You may have to suffer the consequences otherwise. Shah Jahan Badshah is powerful and radiant. Nobody can face him. The kings of the world bow to him. The greatest kings and soldiers bow to him and accept his greatness. The Marwari Rathors and Handays, who have great forts, bow to him. The Mahrattas of the south offer their daughters to the Emperor with humility and meet him. From the East, Bengal and other states, they bow to him, seeing his radiance. The Rajas of the Pahari area, they bring expensive gifts to the Badshah. They bring their daughters to the Badshah as well. They complete their tasks in this way. Form the West: The Pathaans and Gilzaas from Balkh and Bukhara come and bow to Shah Jahan. His reference is considered the best everywhere. His radiance makes everyone fear him. There isn’t anyone else in the world that can compare to the Badshah. No one can fight him. The Badshah has hundreds of thousands of soldiers. The warriors obey him and sacrifice their lives for him. How will you fight the Badshah? It will be difficult for you. Where will you live? If you rebel, you will have to fight and die. You and your Sikhs will die. If you live, where will you live? Listen to my advice, give the Baaz back. Don’t be stubborn. Mughals Khan is still ready to fight on the field. He hasn’t lost yet. He can win you. You sit on the Ghaddi of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji. You should be calm like your predecessors. You have started a new tradition of warriorism. The Gurus before you did not fight. You are trying to be equal to the Badshah. You made a Takhat for yourself and kept an army. You call yourself the “Sacha Paatshaah.” Let all of this go. Let go of your weapons. Take the Baaz and come with me to the Badshah. I will make you and Shah Jahan, friends. If you wish to consult with your wise Sikhs, you can talk to them. They will agree with me. Whatever you think is good, send back the message with me.”
Guru ji heard the messenger and smiled. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji was radiant like the moon. Guru ji said: “listen messenger to my words. Tell Mughlas Khan, word for word. This war started from the horse that was worth 100,000 Rajitpuns. A beloved Sikh of mine brought such an expensive horse for me from Afghanistan. The Badshah heard of the horse and wanted it. He had the horse snatched from the Sikh from Kabul. The Sikh tried to stop them but the Badshah’s people were drunk on pride and took the horse. They did not fear the wrath of a Peer. He did what he wanted to do. He took the horse. The horse fell sick and went to the Qazi. I bought the horse from the Qazi. I wanted to let you know that this Baaz was my revenge. He took my horse. I didn’t take the Baaz. The Baaz came to me. That is the rule: whoever catches a flying Baaz, gets to keep it. I got it with fairness. I took the revenge. The Badshah started the conflict, not me. His father respected me a lot. He used to give me expensive gifts. He stayed humble in front of the Guru. He had the fear of Khuddah in his heart. We were friends for a long time. I stayed with him for a long time. It wasn’t a long time ago. I didn’t cause any conflict. His son does not fear Khuddah. He is drunk on the pride of his kingdom. I don’t meet such people. If I give back the Baaz, how will I take revenge? For this reason, we will fight a fierce battle to kill the pride of the Turks. Akaal Purakh is the master of the world, not Shah Jahan. I will live where Akaal Purakh wants me to. I will eat, wear and experience what I want to in the kingdom of Akaal Purakh. This Shah Jahan is nothing but an insect in front of Akaal Purakh. His pride is false. There have been millions of kings like him that have died. They all thought they were the kings. There were countless “Badshahs” and “Chakravarti Rajas” like him in the past. They all left this earth, bare feet and without clothes. Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji gave the Mughals this kingdom. That is why they have grown. If they disrespect the Guru’s home, I will slowly take everything back from them. I will take their kingdom and give it to my Sikhs. The Sikhs will be the kings. The lotus dies if the water dries up. The one that gives the kingdom can take it away too. The Mughals did the Seva of the Guru to get the kingdom. Their kingdom will not last. Their downfall has started. They will be proven guilty and their kingdom will be in the past. Forget the Baaz. Go and advise your Badshah. If not, understand that I can kill everyone on the battlefield. Just as your comrades have all died on the field, I will kill your other soldiers as well. I will kill your millions of soldiers. Only the cowards fear war. I look forward to war. I have been waiting to fight for a long time. The battle finally came to me. I got the chance to fight the battle. Don’t try to scare me with your great army. I am not afraid. There can be unlimited stacks of wood, a small spark of fire can finish them all. The fire does not fear wood, no matter the quantity. See me as fire. I will destroy the wood in a second. There is time to understand this. Run away or else you will be killed as well. If I start destroying, I will continue destroying till Lahore. Whoever comes in my way, will not survive. This is my promise! Doesn’t matter how strong of a warrior comes to the battlefield, I will destroy them. This is my determination. Understand this, I will never run away from war! Listen messenger, ask Mughlas Khan why is he his own enemy? Tell him that the Guru has taken his revenge. I will tell the Badshah off. Tell him to do what he can!” When the messenger heard this, he stayed quiet. He didn’t want to say anything. He understood that Guru ji was not going to go away. He thought to himself: “many have died but the Guru does not fear anything.”
The messenger went back to Mughlas Khan and gave him the message: “the Guru is not scared. He won’t give the Baaz back. He says: “bring your armies!” He is ready to fight. He is courageous. He is ready to kill and die. He is filled with Bir Ras.” The messenger gave Mughlas Khan the message. He told Mughlas Khan that: “Guru Nanak Dev ji gave the Badshah the kingdom. If the Badshah disrespects the Guru, they will take the kingdom back. He is fearless.” Mughals Khan heard this and felt fear in his heart. He thought to himself: “the Guru will kill me. All of my generals have died. Whoever came in front of the Guru, the Guru killed them. My soldiers praised the Guru’s arrows. They said that he killed many with one arrow. He won’t leave me alive. He will kill me seeing the lead general. If I don’t fight, what will I say to the Badshah? He will call me a coward and take my respect away. That will be death in a worse way. The army will see me as a coward. The warriors will insult me. I will face my destiny. I am going to fight now.” Mughlas Khan thought about this and said to his soldiers: “mount your horses. Sound the Nagaras. Don’t waste time. I am going to war. I will either arrest the Guru, or kill him. Then my life will be worth living. If the Guru survives, the Badshah will get him another way. Dying here will give the glory and praise in both worlds. We will receive glory on earth or the joy of heaven. Going back to Lahore and dying will be painful. We will be slandered and we will go to Hell.” In this way, he mobilized his army. Mughlas Khan fastened his weapons and mounted his horse. Mughlas Khan looked around and saw none of his senior officers to lead the charge. They had all died by the hands of Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. He thought: “I will have to lead the charge now and face the Guru.”
6-15 The Mukhlis (Mughlas) Khan Battle
Hearing the loud sounds of the Nagara, the Sikhs came running. The Sikhs said to Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji: “listen Guru ji, we were far in the front as the Turks had all been killed. A hundred of us were standing guard in case the enemy struck. Some Turks that ran away from the battle and some that were already with Mughlas Khan, Mughlas Khan gathered them. He inspired them and is now attacking us with great anger. All of his officers are dead. He is coming himself. His flags and Nagaras are coming. They are sounding all of the conches and Ransinghas. The battle standards can be seen coming this way. All of the flags are unfurled. The whole army is coming with pride. It is a big force. Oh great Guru ji, we need to be ready for the attack. We need to gather the whole army. This is the last battle. It is the last charge. We will play the Nagara of victory after this charge.” Bhai Lakha Nagarchi ji was with Guru ji. He only played the Nagara of Guru ji’s charge. The other commanders had their own Nagarchis. The other Misls (regiments) all had their own Nagaras and Nagara players. Guru Hargobind Sahib ji said to Bhai Lakhi ji: “play the double-beat (Dhori Chobe) on the Nagara. This is the last charge. It will determine victory or loss for both. Tell all of the warriors to be ready. Tell them to kill the enemy. They won’t run away now. Make sure that the attack his hard from our side. The Turks shouldn’t get time to run away.”
Bhai Bidhi Chand ji folded his hands and said to Guru ji: “whatever you say is what will happen. The greatest officers of the Turks have all died. Some of the cowards that ran away are coming back. How will they fight? Your radiance is too great for them. The Malesh have died without being killed. They saw your arrows and died of heart attacks. They fell from their horses and broke their necks. Some got trampled by their horses. Their weapons fell from their hands. They couldn’t pick them back up. When your soldier Panday Khan attacked, he killed countless generals by ripping them apart. He mixed them into the earth with his hands. Some he killed with his weapons. He killed many with his fists. Bullets were first fired. Many Turks were killed. The battle with the swords, the Turks couldn’t do anything. We will win this charge as well. Some will die and some will run away. Most of them will run away.” As Bhai Bidhi Chand ji was speaking, Mughlas Khan’s army attacked. The bullets fired all at once and killed many in the charge. The bullets went far and broke their bones. The warriors on both sides fought. The Nagaras from both sides sounded. The warriors clashed. The rifles were fired. There were loud noises from the rifles. The noises echoed in the sky. The smoke flew up. The horses ran fast. The warriors were radiant. They fought in Bir Ras. They attacked each other. Whoever came in the front, the Sikhs shot in the chest. The ones that were hit did not get up again. Death inspired all the Turks to come close to Guru ji. The 64 Kaljognis got happy and began to dance. They were excited and waiting for the flesh. They ate the flesh and drank the blood. Bhairon was eating flesh along with vultures and dogs. The crows flew up above. The carnivorous animals came to eat. The armies came in front of each other and shot their rifles. The heads exploded. The bodies exploded. When the warriors died, the horses ran around without riders. Bullets fired from both sides. It was like hail in Chet. The horses ran around, the weapons were swung. The soldiers aimed and fired.
Guru Hargobind Sahib ji came to the battle. He held his bow. He had already finished 10 quivers full of arrows. He called for 10 more. He released them one after the other. His arrows were 4 fingers thick. He fired Badamchas, Meenmukhay, Khappra teers, Sailas, Tukas, Bareechloader, Nooloo, Ardchandra Teer (half moon tip), Khar Kantak Teers. They flew like Cobras flying. When the arrows hit the enemy, they killed many soldiers. One arrow when through many. It killed human and horse. It went through all. Nobody survived his arrows. Many warriors fell. Guru ji’s arrows were death for the enemy. The enemy recognised Guru ji’s arrows: “these are Guru ji’s arrows. Look how thick they are. They are scary. Many have died by fear. Who else can fire such heavy arrows in Kaliyuga? Nobody can even use these arrows. Only Guru ji can do that. There is no other bow more solid than his. He releases his arrows with a lot of strength. Whoever get hit does not survive. Horses don’t even survive. Human are nothing.” The soldiers went to Mughlas Khan and said: “look how thick these arrows are. The Guru is releasing these. You are being stubborn and staying here. The Guru will kill everyone. The Guru is killing many with one arrow. Nobody wants to face the Guru out of fear. His arrows have caused chaos. Let’s see what happens. Let’s charge and attack hard. Let’s fight with swords. That’s the only way we can capture him. He is too strong. He won’t be arrested. We will have to kill him. The Guru gave the battle a scary form. We can’t take him alive.” Mughlas Khan heard this and got scared. He began to doubt his victory. He thought to himself: “we can’t run away now. Khuddah brought us to our death. We can’t do anything now. We will have to fight like our other comrades who have died. The officers who I trusted, all died. I don’t see them.” Mughlas Khan was depressed. His soldiers were depressed. He spoke to his soldiers and played the Nagaras.
The flags unfurled and Mughlas Khan called the charge. He inspired everyone in his army to attack. He said to them: “take all your best weapons and fight your best fight. Arrest the Guru. If you win today, we will go to Lahore and I will praise all of you. I will have your incomes and status promoted. You will get Jageers from the Badshah.” Didar Ali Syed and Sultan Beg were on his right and left side, respectfully. They were the only ones left. The rest were killed by Guru ji. They were going to do a final charge. The charge was ready. They were going to charge hard.
Guru ji prepared the Sikhs for the charge as well. Bhai Painday Khan ji was on Guru ji’s left. On his right was Bhai Bidhi Chand ji. The Brahmin Bhai Malik Jaati ji was a scary form for the enemy. He had his regiment. Both regiments attacked with anger. They killed many with spears and swords. They deflected the strikes and fired rifles. Many soldiers fell. Whoever got hit did not survive. Painday Khan was angry. He killed many soldiers with his arrows. Guru ji and Bhai Bidhi Chand ji showered arrows. Their arrows were released where the majority of the enemy was. The arrows had feathers of the Kankh bird. Guru ji’s arrows were never a miss. They hit the enemy. The arrows hit horses and humans. They would fall and die right away. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji killed many. He came close to Sultan Beg. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji released an arrow with all his strength. Sultan Beg was wearing chainmail and a metal helmet. Sultan Beg survived the arrow. He picked up his heavy spear and aimed at Bhai Bidhi Chand ji. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji maneuvered his horse but got hit in the arm, with a minor wound. Guru ji protected him. The Mughal was going to run away after striking and missing. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji yelled out: “you coward! Why are you running away. This is not the tradition of warriors on the battlefield.” He took out his sword and struck Sultan Beg. Sultan Beg blocked the strike with his shield. Bhai Bidhi Chand ji got angry for missing him a second time. He moved his horse back and mounted an arrow on his bow. He pulled the arrow and tried to look for an empty spot. Sultan Beg was filled with chain mail except for his neck. Bhai Bidhi Chand aimed at the neck and released his arrow. It was like a king cobra flying. The arrow flew like lightening and hit Sultan Beg in the neck. He fell off of his horse. The warriors of both sides were watching. Sultan Beg died and went to Bahist (heaven). The Turks mourned his dead and got scared. The Sikhs got happy seeing this. The Turks lost all hope of staying alive. The armies were fighting each other.
