5-51 Coming back/ Translations of Japji/ Talwandi
The news about Guru ji wanting to go home spread in Kashmir. The Sikh Sangat brought sweet fruits for Guru ji for the travels. He fulfilled everyone’s wishes and blessed the them with his holy vision. He gave Siropas to the senior leader Sikhs. Everyone then went home. Satguru ji mounted his horse and set off.
Where Bhaavan Avatar was born to Aditi and Kashyap, the name of that place was Baramulla. The great Rishi, Kashyap had lived there. Kashyap was the founder of Kashmir. The whole area was established by him as a centre for learning. Satguru ji came to Baramulla where there were mountains all around. The Sikhs in and around the area of Baramulla heard about Guru ji’s arrival and came to meet him. They did many types of Sevas for Satguru ji and had their wishes fulfilled. Guru ji gave them the wisdom of Gurmat to instil Sikhi into them. Guru ji rested the night and set off on his way the next morning. Guru ji travelled through the mountains where the Cheer trees were. Those trees were really high.
In Hafizabad, there was a Sikh who was thinking of Guru ji. He wanted to see Guru ji. The gem of the Sodhis came to his home to fulfill the Sikh’s wish. Guru ji set up his Dhera outside of the city. His horse was tied along with the other Sikhs’ horses. The trees provided good shade. The trees were green and densely leaved. The tarps and rugs were laid out. The people of Hafizabad found out about Guru ji’s arrival. The Sikh living there, who was thinking of Guru ji, was named Bhai Karam Chand ji. He would recite Gurbani and ponder on its meanings. He quickly came to see Guru ji at his camp. He bowed to Guru ji’s lotus feet. Guru Hargobind Sahib ji looked at the Sikh and said: “who are you? Where do you live? For what reason have you come today?” Bhai Karam Chand ji folded his hands and said: “I am a Sikh servant of your feet. I live in this place you see here known as Hafizabad. I would like to do your Seva. That’s why I have come to you. My good Karma has come forward.” After saying this, Bhai Karam Chand ji went home and got food for the Langar. He got feed for the horses; ghee, flour, rice and sugar for the Langar. He brought everything and placed it in front of Guru ji. The Langri took the stuff and began to prepare Langar. Guru ji ate the Langar and was satiated. He sat on his seat and was happy with the Sikh’s Seva.
Bhai Karam Chand ji folded his hands and said: “I have wanted to come to you for a long time. I wanted to know the translations of Japji Sahib. I wanted to hear it from you. Please say them to me. I don’t want to hear them from anyone else. Nobody else can understand Japji Sahib like you.” Guru ji heard this and said: “the translations of Japji Sahib are higher than high. The translations of Vedas show you how to know your real form. To know yourself. “Jap” also means to “know yourself.” Jap is the first Bani. The rest of the Granth is written beautifully. The meanings of Jap and the Vedas are the same. They are both to know yourself. Listen, the first 6 Pauris of Japji Sahib state the Manglacharan of Akaal Purakh. It describes the glory of Parmeshwar. The 7th Pauri speaks of Vairagya (to see all possessions and fame as pleasureless and desireless). Without Gyaan, everything is garbage and false. The next 4 Pauris speak about “Sharvan,” listening. The next 4 show you how to “Manan,” to accept. It is the path to Brahmgyaan. The Panch Parvaan Pauri is the Nidhyasan. Whoever does the practice of these 3 things, the person understands “too sada salamat Nirankaar,” (Tatvamasi), you yourself are the Brahm. There are 4 “Mahavaaks” in the Vedas: Prajnanam Brahma- consciousness is Brahm; Aham Brahmasmi- I am the Brahm; Tatvamasi- you are the Brahm; Ayam Aatma Brahm- This Self is Brahm. The line: “too sada salamat Nirankaar,” comes 4 times in Japji Sahib. These are the 4 Mahavaaks in Japji Sahib. The Satogun Shakti is mentioned in the first “Asankh” Pauri. The second mentions the Tamsi Shakti. It speaks of the Tamogun in the world. The third one is Satogun and Tamogun mixed together. It shows the oneness of the Jeev and the Ishwar. The pure Satogun is Ishwar, from which the Jeev comes from. The Sat, Chetan and Anand is in both. It is the same infinite and blissful consciousness in both.” Guru ji translated the Japji Sahib for Bhai Karam Chand ji and the Sikhs. They all listened and ingrained the words into their hearts. Guru ji said: “the meanings of Japji Sahib are very deep. Guru Nanak Dev ji’s Bani is beautiful. It is above everything. There is nothing that can be said above it. Whover calls it infinite, does not know anything above it either. Guru Nanak Dev ji has revealed all the Yogas to all and showed the true path to the Sikhs. Whoever accepts the words and achieves the Gyaan, their bonds from millions of births are broken. One should recite Japji Sahib after bathing in the morning. They should think of Guru Nanak Dev ji with love. They will never be visited by the Jumms. Guru Nanak Dev ji will come to save them at their end-time.” Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji travelled many lands and saved millions. Bhai Jetha ji and the other Sikhs were listening. They spoke their thoughts to Guru ji: “the master of the world, Guru Nanak Dev ji, was born in this holy land. Please be gracious and take us to the place where he was born.” Guru Hargobind Sahib ji said: “this is my wish as well. Let’s go to Nankana Sahib. The fasting day of “Nimaani Ekadashi” is upon us. Many people will be there. We will reach that day.” The next day, Guru ji and the army got ready to leave. Bhai Karma Chand ji approached Guru ji and said: “I wish to go as well.” Guru ji said: “you should stay here and make a nice place for Sikhs to stay. Do their Seva. Just as you received rewards in doing my Seva, you will be rewarded in the same way by doing the Seva of the Sikhs.” Guru ji gave Bhai Karam Chand ji hope and headed towards the Bahr Desh.
Guru ji arrived in Talwandi. Guru ji went to the Dhera of Guru Nanak Dev ji. He bathed in the pure waters of the Sarovar and wore a new and expensive Chola. He tied a beautiful Dastaar with a Kalgi and Jigha. Guru ji’s beard was black. There was a pearl necklace in his neck and earrings hung from his ears. He had a sword and shield around his waist. He tied a Kumerkassa and looked like a lion. Guru ji placed the fruits from Kashmir at the Sarovar and then went to the birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev ji. Guru ji placed many gifts and Karah Prashaad there. He thought of Guru Nanak Dev ji and bowed there. He presented many foods and fruits. Guru Hargobind Sahib ji visited the other places in Talwandi and told the Sikhs of the history. Where Shaishnaag provided shade to Guru Nanak Dev ji, Guru Hargobind Sahib ji took the Sikhs to the tree where Guru Nanak Dev ji laid down. Guru ji told the Sikhs the history. Everyone bowed their heads there. They then went to the tree where the shadow was static to give Guru ji shade. They next visited the fields which were grazed by Guru ji’s buffalos and were good as new when revisited. They visited other places and set up camp. When Guru ji came back, the people of the area find out of his arrival. Nimaani Ekadashi came. The great grandson of Chacha Bedi Lalu ji came with great joy. The descendants of Rai Bhullar also heard of Guru Hargobind Sahbi ji’s arrival and came to see him. They all came with other Sikhs. They all brought great gifts for Guru ji. They had love in their hearts and met Guru ji. Tarps were laid and Divaan was in session like a king’s court. Guru ji respected all the Sikhs and asked how they were. The family of Rai Bhullar was asked of their ancestors’ history. They spoke about their elders as everyone listened on. They were all given Siropas all along with the Bedis. It was a joyful and blissful meeting. Everyone saw Guru ji as omnipotent and benevolent. Everyone went to the birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev ji to attend the Jor Mela. Other Sikhs came to See Guru ji. They brought gifts and had their wishes fulfilled. They folded their hands and saw the handsome Guru. They all praised Guru ji as they went home. Many Sikhs from other villages came to see Guru ji. They were all amazed to see Guru ji. Guru ji stayed for a while and then travelled on. Guru ji then went to the Mudhri village and camped.
5-52 The Third Engagement
Guru ji came to Mudhri village in the Sheikhupura district. The servants tied up Guru ji’s horses and did their Seva. The tarps and rugs were laid out. The Sikh warriors sat down with Guru ji. The people of the village heard of Guru ji’s arrival and came to see him. They brought many gifts as they bowed to his feet. They served Guru ji in many ways. One Sikh spoke: “Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji’s stick is here. His holy shoes are here too.” Guru ji heard this and called for them. Everyone saw the items of Guru Arjan Dev ji and bowed their heads. Bhai Jetha ji asked: “for what reason did Guru ji give you these items?” The Sikh, named Bhai Manak ji, spoke of the beautiful history behind it: “Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji came to this place and met a Sikh named Bhai Kidara ji. The Dhera was set up for Guru ji in the Dharamsala. He served Guru ji well with great devotion. Bhai Kidara ji had a disease that affected his throat. The disease was known as “Hajeera.” He was in great pain because of the disease. He tried to take many types of medications but he was not cured. He stopped trying and trusted Guru ji. He became a devout Sikh and did many types of great Sevas with a deep love. He wanted to see Guru ji at Amritvela. Guru ji was laying on his bed when Bhai Kidara ji came and sat on the floor next to Guru ji’s bed. He recited Gurbani as other Sikhs were sitting as well. Bhai Gurdas ji saw Bhai Kidara ji’s swollen throat and asked: “how did you get this painful illness?” Bhai Kidara ji spoke: “this is the Hajeera sickness, which is quite painful. I tried to cure it but it seems like my bad karma didn’t let it cure. I figured out that I have to live with it so I stopped searching for a cure. Many people asked about it but I’ve stopped looking for a cure.” A Sikh named Bhai Kalyana ji spoke: “you have understood this disease as uncurable. During the day, request Guru ji to cure you. He will surely cure you. There is nothing in this world that Guru ji cannot cure or fix.” Bhai Kidara ji heard this and said: “Satguru ji’s glory is beyond this world. What you say is true but listen to my wish: I want the ultimate bliss from Satguru ji by which my mind remains attached to the Satnam Simran. The body is temporary and so are its pleasures. It is going to be destroyed. The pleasures have not gone with anyone. If I ask Guru ji to cure me, I don’t think this is right. To kill an insect, why call a lion that can rip an elephant’s head apart? The ones that can kill their attachment are the ones who Guru ji loves and looks upon them with love.” The Sikhs were pleased to hear Bhai Kidara ji’s decision. Bhai Gurdas ji said: “what you have said is true. The blessed ones only speak like this. You have faith and devotion in your heart. These shoes that you see in front of you, they belong to Satguru ji. Take them around your house in every direction. Your disease and pains will be all gone.” Bhai Kidara ji obeyed and picked up the shoes. He touched his throat with the shoes and his illness went away immediately. It was like he never had the illness. Everyone else wanted to touch the shoes as well. They did and their pain was all gone. After a while, Guru ji opened his eyes and saw Bhai Kidara ji sitting in front of him. Bhai Kidara ji got up and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. Guru ji said: “how is your disease?” The Sikh said to Guru ji: “I touched my throat with your shoes and the disease went away. It was not curing and as soon as your shoes touched it, it went away.” Satguru ji took his stick and picked up his shoes. He said: “just as your disease went away, others who have the Hajeera disease will be cured if they touch these. Take these shoes and this stick. Take it to your home. They will stay in your home for a long time.” Bhai Kidara ji took the items and went home. He did Pooja of the items everyday and attended to anyone who was sick. He would take the shoes and stick of Guru ji and cure the sick persons.” Hearing this, the Sikhs were happy. Guru Hargobind Sahib ji stayed one night there. He ate and slept the night.
The next day, Guru ji bathed and got ready. Guru ji and the Sikhs got ready and left the village. On the way, many Sikhs would come and meet Guru ji. They would bow and present food as they bowed. Guru ji came upon a village called Mutvi. The Sikhs set up camp as the gracious Guru got off his horse. This was in the area of Gujranwala. The katha of this area, oh listeners, listen carefully. There was a village named Mandyali. The Airavati River (Ravi) runs about 9 km away from this place. There was a Marwaha Khatri who lived there. His name was Baba Duara ji and his wife was Mata Bhaagan ji. They did many good deeds in their previous births. They had lived in this village for a long time and did the Simran of Sri Parmeshwar. They had a daughter who had a blessed destiny. She grew up to be very beautiful. Baba Duara ji and his wife began searching for a suitable match for their daughter. They did not find anyone they liked. They had a friend who was a Sikh.
One day, the Sikh came to meet the couple. The couple told the Sikh about finding a husband for their daughter: “we can’t find a good family for our daughter. Tell us if you know of a good match. Tell us the place and home.” The Sikh thought about it in his heart. He was thinking about the Satguru: “if the daughter marries the Guru, there can’t be anyone better than him. If the daughter is fortunate, it will happen.” The Sikh spoke: “listen friend, the Satguru is the best match. If this relationship happens, you would be fortunate. You would be blessed. There is no other like him. The son of Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji is a strong warrior. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji is very handsome. He has two wives, whom the world bows to. If we have faith and devotion in our hearts to do this match, there is no one better than him.” Baba Duara ji heard this and asked: “where does he live now? We should send Laagis (Brahmins who take marriage proposals) there. Whatever you proposed, I love it.” The Sikh said: “the Guru is returning from Kashmir right now. I have heard that he was in Talwandi. A traveller told me this. He is going to pass this way to go home. We will keep track of where he sets up camp. When he camps close by, lets take our proposal immediately.” Listening to this, Baba Duara ji began to wait.
When Guru ji came to Mutvi, Baba Duara ji sent Laagis, right away. Where Guru ji was sitting, the Laagis came to him. The Brahmin Laagis gave their blessings. Bhai Jetha ji was away in the distance when they came and was called close. The Brahmins said: “we have brought a marriage proposal for Guru ji. There is a Marwaha Khatri in the village of Mandyali. They have a beautiful daughter who is of age to be married. She has been received as a blessing to her parents. The wedding can happen along with the engagement. We have come for this reason.” Bhai Jetha ji said to Satguru ji: “please fulfill their wish. Whoever comes to your sanctuary, you do not let them go. That is your promise to your servants. That is your “Birdh.” Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji accepted the Sikh’s request and called the Brahmin. They all asked the Brahmin: “tell us about Baba Duara ji. He has sent the proposal with a deep devotion.” Another Pandha/Pandit was called from the village. The Pandit of the village came and bowed. He calculated an auspicious date and time for the wedding and said: “the day after tomorrow is a good day. Do as you please.” Guru ji stayed there and his engagement was done. The preparations for the wedding started. Sikhs were sent to Lahore to collect all the items of need for the wedding. Whatever was required, the Brahmin had instructed them.
5-53 The Third Wedding
The engagement was completed as directed by the Brahmins. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji was a radiant groom. The Sikhs got ready and were part of the Bharaat. The horses were saddled and readied. They galloped and danced as they rode. The Bharaat reached Mandyali in no time. Baba Duara ji and others came ahead to receive the Bharaat. Bhai Jetha ji made all the preparations. He was in charge of the expenses. He gave donations to the beggars and made them happy. He was showering money on all. The Shehnais, Daphs and other instruments sounded. Conches, Dhols and Napheeryas sounded like the thunder. Baba Duara ji came and circumvented money on top of Guru ji’s head and performed the family traditions. Guru ji and the Bharaat was taken to the place of stay. Whatever they needed, they were provided. The Bharaat had come 2 days before the marriage day. Whoever saw Guru ji, they would praise his handsome form. The beggars came to beg. Guru ji made sure that they were given a lot of money. The news spread amongst them that Guru ji was giving a lot of donations. The poor all came and praised Guru ji after receiving money. They praised Guru ji to their family and friends.
The day of the wedding came. It was evening. Guru ji mounted his horse. The Shehnais and Dhundhabs sounded. Everyone was happy. Bhai Jetha ji did the Milni with Baba Duara ji. The Bharaat was met with the bride’s family. Mata Bhaagan ji saw her son-in-law to-be and was filled with extreme joy. She couldn’t contain her happiness. All the women praised Guru ji’s form. Most people saw Guru ji for the first time. The time of the “Gao Dhoor” arrived and all the Brahmins sat around the bedi fire. Satguru ji was called to the bedi for the marriage. Bhai Jetha ji, Bhai Bidhi Chand ji and the others, all came with Guru ji. Guru ji was seated near the bedi fire. The pooja of the Navgrehs was done and the fire was lit. Ghee and Homa was added to the fire. The bride, Mata Mahadevi ji (Mata Marwahi ji) came to the bedi as well. The circumventing of the fire was done with the bride, by Guru ji and the wedding ceremony was completed. Bhai Jetha ji gave money where required with his own hands. Satguru ji went back to his Dhera at the playing of many musical instruments.
The call to Langar was sent to everyone. Guru ji was seated on a higher seat. 7 types of Pakvaans were made and plated. As everyone ate, the women sang songs and made jokes with the Bharaat. Everyone was happy and praised Guru ji. After eating, everyone came back to the Dhera and slept the night.
In the morning, everyone got up and bathed. Satguru ji held a Divaan. The people of the nearby villages all came to see Guru ji. Rich and poor, they all came. They brought gifts for Guru ji and placed them in front of Guru ji as they bowed. Their wishes were all fulfilled. Guru ji stayed there for 3 more days. Baba Duara ji then organized the Dholi departure. He gathered many gifts as part of the dowry, as much as he could. Along with Mata Bhaagan ji, Baba Duara ji met Mata Mahadevi ji and gave her away to the Guru Master. Mata Mahadevi ji was seated in the Dholi. Guru ji mounted his horse. The other Sikhs all mounted their horses. The instruments sounded, the conches blew, the Bharaat started its journey home. The Sikhs showered money everywhere.
The Bharaat travelled some distance. Baba Duara ji and the other villagers came to say their goodbyes. Guru ji gave them leave. As the bride’s family and relatives were about to leave, Guru ji said: “hold on. A very beloved Sikh of mine is coming to see me. He has a deep desire to see me.” In this time, Bhai Langah ji had arrived. He came and grabbed Guru ji’s feet. Satguru ji asked him: “are you well?” Bhai Langah ji said: “some of your Sikhs went to Lahore a few days ago to grab some items for the wedding. I got the news of your wedding from them. I then wanted to come and see you. There is something else that is of greater concern. The Qazi Rustam Khan, the father of Mata Kaulan ji, is causing problems. He slanders you to Badshah, Shah Jahan. He speaks lies about you and says that you are faulty. He wants to destroy the Dharamsala in Lahore. He is fighting to prove that the land belongs to the Mosque. He wants to make a Mosque there. Bhai Vizier Khan ji reverses the Qazi’s words every time and proves him wrong. The Sikh is a good person. The Qazi has hatred in his heart. I wanted to tell you this in person. I am blessed to see you.” Sri Satguru ji heard this and said: “the Dharamsala is the place of Parmeshwar. Whichever fool thinks ill of that place, their roots will quickly be pulled. The Satguru’s Dharamsala will remain. Its foundations were placed by Parmeshwar. It is permanent.” Bhai Langah ji heard this and had discussions. Guru ji said: “go back now and do the Seva of the Dharamsala from the inside and outside. Whatever income and expenses are of that place, you are now in charge of that. You are to direct the Langar and the traditions. You are in charge now. The Sangat that comes, give them Langar in the Pangat. Keep the Degh going everyday and do the Seva with love and devotion.” Bhai Langah ji bowed to Guru ji’s feet and received his blessings. He was happy to see Guru ji and went back to Lahore.
Before Baba Duara ji had left, he gave love to his daughter and asked Guru ji with his hands folded: “when will I get your Darshan again? You are benevolent. You have saved a sinner like me.” The omniscient Guru saw the wish inside of Baba Duara ji’s heart of longing to see the Guru again and said: “this Taali tree that is standing here, you can get my Darshan from it. You will be able to see me in the tree. Whoever comes here with faith and devotion, they will receive many rewards. This place will be called “Chutala Sahib.” The tree will grow and will last for a long time.” Seeing Baba Duara ji as his father-in-law, Guru ji have him a lot of respect. Mata Bhaagan ji was standing with her hands folded. Guru ji bowed to her as well, observing her as his mother-in-law. Guru ji and the Bharaat met the relatives and left.
Guru ji reached the Ravi River and saw its flow. The Bharaat boarded ferries and crossed the river. The Treasure of Virtue set up the Dhera on the other side. There was a canoe there that was once used by Guru Nanak Dev ji. Guru Hargobind Sahib ji visited the canoe, thinking of Guru Nanak Dev ji. The Bharaat continued towards Amritsar after. They sent a messenger of Guru ji’s arrival. Mata Ganga ji heard about Guru ji’s marriage and was extremely happy. The women of the city came and gave Mata ji their congratulations. The Naubats and Shehnais sounded and could be heard from afar. The women, whose voices were sweet like the cuckoo birds, sang songs of joy. Beggars came and asked for money. They were given many donations.
The people of the city came ahead to receive the Bharaat as they found out of its arrival. Guru ji spent another night on the way. The next day, Guru ji mounted his horse and started off with the Dholi with the sounds of the instruments. The warrior Sikhs all followed Guru ji. They all arrived close by to Amritsar. Many Sikhs came to receive them. Fragrances were sprinkled in the markets. People looked on from their balconies to see Guru ji. When Guru ji came, the women and men came to place garlands of flowers in Guru ji’s neck. They had prepared the garlands themselves with the most fragrant flowers. The Bhatts and the Naqeebs all announced the arrival of Satguru ji and sang his praises. Money was showered over the Dholi of Mata Mahadevi ji. There was happiness everywhere. Guru ji came to his home. Mata Ganga ji performed the traditions of the family. Mata ji did the Aarti of Guru ji and circumvented water over the heads of the couple. She drank the water after. The newlyweds were brought into the home and seated. Mata Ganga ji looked at the new couple and felt a great joy.
Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji then got up and went to the Amritsar Sarovar to bathe. He took Prashaad and went to the Harmandhir Sahib Darbar. He folded his hands and bowed his head. Baba Bhudda ji and Bhai Gurdas ji met Guru ji and bowed to his feet. They all did the Parkarma, three times, of Harmandhir Sahib and came to the Akaal Takhat. Tarps were laid out there and a Divaan was held. Everyone came to meet Guru ji. They all bowed and sat down near Guru ji. Guru ji spoke with everyone. Painday Khan and other soldiers came to see Guru ji. They all bowed to Guru ji. Their eyes gleamed as they saw Guru ji. Guru ji respected Painday Khan a lot. Guru ji spoke to all the warriors to see how they were.
5-54 The Birth of Bibi Veero, Baba Sooraj Mal and Baba Anirai
Baba Gurditta ji was brought to Guru Hargobind Sahib ji. Baba ji bowed to Guru ji’s feet. Guru ji picked up his son and placed him in his lap. He gave him love and spoke to him softly. Guru ji gave respect to everyone who came. The Sikhs, Masands and warriors all came. Guru ji then went to his home and ate.
In the evening, a Deepmala was done throughout the city. There were Divas everywhere. There was light everywhere. At Harimandhir Sahib, there were Ghee Divas lit everywhere. There were lamps lit on the road. Everyone slept the night. Guru ji woke up at Amritvela and got ready. The Rababis sang the Asa Vaar. The Sikhs did Simran of Satnam and did Jaikaras. Satguru ji came into the Divaan. The Sikhs came to get Gyaan from Guru ji. Many months passed like this. Satguru ji did many miracles and gave Gyaan to many. Mata Damodri ji was pregnant a second time. Many months passed and the time of the child’s birth came. A daughter was born! This daughter was the most blessed daughter. Mata Ganga ji saw her granddaughter and was filled with love. She called her “Veero.” Mata Ganga ji loved her very much. She would take her in her lap and take care of her. She would say: “she is born in the Guru’s house. She is very fortunate.”
Diwali soon came. The Sangat came to bathe in the Sarovar. They came to Sri Harmandhir Sahib and listened to the Shabads with bliss. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji would sit at Akaal Takhat and hold Divaans. Sikhs would come with many gifts and have their wishes fulfilled. Guru ji fulfilled everyone’s wishes and blessed them with many virtues. Many would do Bhagti and many would do Simran of Satnam to achieve the highest status. Some would be given peace and stability of the mind. They would be able to see their Aatma. They would kill the ego of their body and no longer be affected by the karma. Many Sikhs would come and do Seva and break their bonds with the world. They were fortunate. They were concentrated on receiving Mukti. They were hoping for Mukti with bliss.
Guru ji would go to the jungles to hunt. He loved practicing Shastervidya. Painday Khan was very strong. Guru ji loved him very much as a son. Guru ji would pay attention to Painday Khan’s training. Guru ji would call for two strong bulls and make them fight. The bulls would lock their horns and fight. They would charge once. Before their second charge, Guru ji would say: “Painday Khan, grab both of them.” Painday Khan would obey and stop the bulls from going forward by holding their horns. He would not let them move. He would be able to push the bulls back. They couldn’t move forward. Thousands would watch this show of strength. They would be amazed at his strength and say: “there is no one stronger than him in the world. We haven’t seen anyone stronger.” His stories spread to other lands. They would be amazed to hear his stories of great strength. Some would come, just to see Painday Khan. They would see his big and strong body, and leave. Painday Khan would swing a 9 Maund club and plant it into the ground. Satguru ji would take care of him and test his strength. The Sangat would bring the rarest items for Guru ji. They would be blessed by Guru ji. Guru ji would give those rare items to Painday Khan. Painday Khan would show his strength to make Guru ji happy. Guru ji gave him money, clothes and weapons. Guru ji would give him food that would make him stronger. Guru ji would make him sit close to him and give him food. He was given curds, paneer, almonds and other dry fruits. Guru ji would weigh him to see how strong he would be. Painday Khan would exercise in many ways to get stronger and faster. Wherever Painday Khan would plant his feet, potholes would form. His body had become like iron. He would be able to hold the strong horses and not let them go forward. Guru ji would give him silver coins. Painday Khand would squish the minted coin and erase its face. Painday Khan would compete in Shaster Vidya matches and win. Nobody could defeat him but when Guru ji would wrestle him, Painday Khan would lose. Guru ji would take him down and destroy his pride. In embarrassment, Painday Khan would say: “there is no one stronger than me in the world. I don’t let anyone walk two steps. No one is stronger than me. Who can fight me and tolerate my strength? You use your strength to take me down. You take my power away using your holy powers. That’s why you can take me down and make me powerless.” He had become egotistical of his strength. He would see himself as the strongest. Sangat from many lands would come and be amazed, seeing Painday Khan. Guru ji spent many days like this and did many tasks.
Mata Marwahi ji soon became pregnant. She gave birth to a handsome son. He was radiant like the sun. Mata Ganga ji was happy to hear this. She did many celebrations by having Dhundhabs and Shehnais played. The poor were given donations. Flowers were hung on the doors. Mango tree leaves were hung. Mata Ganga ji said to her son: “prepare for celebrations.” Guru ji obeyed his mother. Guru ji said: “from this child, the family will grow. His Lagan has a great presence of the Sun, the “Sooraj Bali.” His name will be “Sooraj Mal.” The traditions of the family were preformed. The celebrations brought a lot of joy everywhere.
After this, Mata Nanaki ji wanted to have a son. One day when Guru ji was sitting alone, Mata Nanaki ji came to Guru ji. With great shyness, she folded her hands and bowed to Guru ji. As she stood up, Guru ji asked her: “what wish is in your heart? Tell me what is your wish.” Mata Nanaki ji said: “you are omniscient. You know what I want, already. If you must ask, oh master, my other sisters have sons. I wish to have the same.” Guru ji was happy and said: “I have seen that you are more fortunate than the others. You will have more sons than the other two. Your glory will be more than them.” Mata Nanaki ji was happy to hear this. She folded her hands and bowed her head.
After a few days, Mata Nanaki ji was pregnant. After 9 months, the nurses served her and overlooked the birth of her son. She gave birth to a baby boy that took all of the worries away. Mata Ganga ji came and saw her grandson. She was filled with great joy. Mata Ganga ji remembered the words of her husband, Guru Arjan Dev ji, and watched them come to life: “the vine of the lineage will grow. Prabhoo ji has written the Dharma into this and made it grow.” The beggars were given many donations. The instruments were played at the door. There was celebration after celebration in the Guru’s home. There was happiness everywhere. Everyone gave their blessings and spoke with joy: “may the Guru’s family grow a hundred times bigger.” The celebrations appropriate of the time were done. Karah Prashaad was made and distributed everywhere. Mata Ganga ji asked Guru ji: “oh son, tell me the name of this son? Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji has blessed us and made our family big.” Guru ji thought about it and said: “his name will be Anirai.” Everyone was happy to hear this. The Sangat was in bliss to hear this.
5-55 The Engagement of Baba Gurditta ji
Some time had passed while Guru Hargobind Sahib ji was in Amritsar. Many people were blessed by Guru ji. They would hear of Guru ji’s glory and come to see him. The rainy season ended and the cold season began, Diwali came. Many Sikhs left their homes and came to Amritsar to celebrate. They all collected their Dasvands and brought it to Amritsar. They brought rare and expensive gifts for Guru ji. People from the 4 castes and 4 Ashrams all came to visit Guru ji with devotion. They had a deep faith and devotion towards Guru ji. They knew of his glory. Sikhs came in groups from every direction. Kings, poor, beggars, people without desires, people with desires; all came. Bhagats with love and faith, Brahmgyaanis and others came to see Guru ji. They all came to the glory of the Guru. The Sikhs said: “Guru ji lives in this world ocean but his Chola is never wet from the ways of the world. This world is a dark place in which Guru ji lives, but the darkness can not touch him. His mind is illuminating white. The most powerful beings with powers are amazed to see Guru ji. They are amazed to see him as a great saint while living a married life. He is in the middle of the ways of the word but happiness and sorrow cannot touch him.” Many people gathered in Amritsar who wanted to see Guru ji. They bathed at the Amritsar Sarovar and bowed their heads inside Harmandhir Sahib. They presented money there while they bowed. Their sins were washed away as they bowed. A few days before Diwali, Guru ji blessed the Sikhs. At Akaal Takhat, the Divaan was in session. Tarps and rugs were laid out for the Sangat to sit on. Guru ji’s seat was set with a beautiful canopy and a golden Chattar. Two Chaurs were being waived over his head. Golden maces were held by two Chobdhaars on either side of Guru ji. The beloved Sikhs were sitting with Guru ji. The warriors came and bowed to Guru ji’s feet. Guru ji was wearing expensive clothes and weapons. His weapons had goldwork on them. Many Masands from around the world came with rich people. They all came to bow.
Baba Gurditta ji came to the Divaan of Guru ji. He was wearing golden jewellery. The jewellery had emeralds, diamonds and pearls in them. They shined brightly. He bowed to Guru ji. “Guru ji grabbed him and put him in his lap like Bhud keeps Chander in his lap; like Krishan keeps Pardhuman in his lap”; is what the Sikhs would say. The son of the Guru was radiant in the Divaan and extremely handsome like his father. His eyes were like the petals of a lotus flower. They were wide like a deer’s fawn.
A Sikh named Baba Rama Khatri ji was standing and stared at Baba Gurditta ji. He wanted to have his daughter married to the Guru’s son but he couldn’t say it. He thought to himself: “the difference is like the difference between an elephant and an ant.” He was shy to speak. He remained quiet. He thought about Guru ji: “Guru ji does not care for rich people though. He blesses the ones with love. He respects the poor as well. Chandoo was a big Divaan but his daughter’s proposal was rejected. The daughters of poor Sikhs were married to the Guru. They were given great respect. Everything comes from Guru ji. He is the one that makes the rich, rich.” He thought about this and folded his hands. He gathered his courage to speak. He stood up. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib ji saw the Sikh and noticed that he had something to say. Guru ji said: “why are you standing? What is your desire? Tell me your wish now.” Baba Rama ji then spoke: “I wish to present the marriage proposal of my 6-year-old daughter for your son. I want her to be his servant. You empower the poor. You are compassionate towards the poor. This is your way; you empower the poor. I was afraid to say this to you.” Satguru ji said to Bhai Jetha ji: “have him seated in a nice place. Go and send news to my mother. She will do what she thinks is right. Tell her of this Sikh’s village and family name. She can see what is good and bad.”
Bhai Jetha ji went to Mata Ganga ji’s home right away. He met Mata ji and told her everything: “whatever is your decision, please tell us. We will do as you say.” Mata Ganga ji was happy to hear this. She said: “this is a very joyous news. Laxmi has come to our home. Why would we close our doors? Don’t doubt this. Take the Shagan and carry out the traditions. They should be wise and from a good family. Money comes and goes. They are from Vatala. The Khatris from there are well-known.” Bhai Jetha ji understood Mata ji’s wishes and went to Guru ji.
Bhai Jetha ji said to Guru ji: “Mata ji has said to accept the proposal.” The Brahmins were consulted for an auspicious day. The items needed for the engagement was gathered. When the day came for the engagement, the celebrations started with joy. A Sandalwood stool was laid and Baba Gurditta ji was seated on it. The Pooja of the Navgrehs was done. Many people gathered. The Naubats, Shehnais and Napheeryas played. Satguru ji was sitting near Baba Gurditta ji. Baba Rama ji was called. He came and saw the gathering. This brought great joy to his heart. He put the engagement Tikka onto Baba Gurditta ji’s forehead. He carried out the other traditions. Almonds, coconuts and other dry fruits were placed in Baba Gurditta ji’s lap. Ladoos and sweets were brought and distributed to the Sangat. The women of the city sang songs of joy. Their voices sounded like cuckoos and nightingales. They sang happily as they celebrated. Everyone joined in the celebration.
Guru ji took Baba Gurditta ji to Harmandhir Sahib after the engagement. They took a lot of Prashaad with them and bowed inside. They stood up and did the Ardaas. They did 3 Parkarmas and had the Prashaad distributed to the Sangat. They then went to the Akaal Takhat and visited the Sikhs there. It was evening and then they did their Nitnem. They then went home and continued the celebrations. Satguru ji sat in his seat. Mata Ganga ji prepared for all the celebrations. She gave donations and gifts to all. Guru ji’s praises spread everywhere. Diwali then came and the Sikhs celebrated. Sikhs from every direction came. It was difficult to count the number of people coming. The Sikhs were given Siropas and their wishes were fulfilled. The senior Masands were given respect and gifts. They were given leave as they went back to their homes. The Masands would bring the collected Dasvands from their areas. It was difficult to name all the lands they were from. The Sangat from the islands in the ocean came and brought money. Sikhs from countless villages came. Wherever the Sikhs would be in trouble, Guru ji would protect them, there. He would cast his divine vision and bless millions. They could not be counted. Wherever someone would do Ardaas to Guru ji, Guru ji would fulfill their Ardaas. Guru ji was all-pervading and close to his beloved Sikhs.
