5-21 Kaulan is Upset and comes to Guru ji’s Sanctuary
Bibi Kaulan ji was upset and longing to see Guru ji. She really wanted to see Guru ji but couldn’t find a solution. The Qazi and his wife thought in their mind: that Bibi Kaulan was upset due to the physical pain she endured and wasn’t feeling hungry. Kaulan wouldn’t eat or drink with joy and remain laying down with a sheet on her face. In the evening, the maid-friend of Kaulan was called by Kaulan. She said to her: “go to the Peer’s Dhera and tell him that I am not coming out of his fear. Tell him I am not in my senses and only want to see him. Ask him to give me his Darshan. I am dying without him. I can only live if I see him. Oh maid, look at my state and tell him how I am.” The maid heard the sincerity and pain in her voice. Kaulan had become weak in 2 days. She had stopped eating properly. She was connected to Guru ji’s love. The maid gave her hope: “why are you suffering like a fish without water? Don’t be so hasty. Your separation will be gone soon.” The maid went to Guru ji in the dark of the evening.
The maid met Guru ji and bowed to him with her hands folded. She stood up and said: “listen Peer ji, you are omniscient. You know why I am here. Kaulan is longing to see you. She has lost her patience. What can I say? She is suffering to see you, day and night. She humbly asked me to make a request to you. She said: “go to Guru ji’s Dhera and tell him: “my days feel like years.” She lays on her bed and moans in pain. She keeps saying: “hai!” Everyone thinks she is in pain due to her beating. In fact, it is her separation from you that is putting her in pain. I have told you how she is. I await your command. Kaulan awaits your command.” Guru Hargobind Sahib ji understood Bibi Kaulan’s love. It was a devotional love. It was deep. It was between souls. He said blessing words: “tell her to wait a little longer. The Dhera will be leaving tomorrow morning from Lahore. I will take her with me the next morning after the Dhera leaves. Tell her not to sleep tomorrow night. When she hears my horse, she will know when I arrive. She should quickly come out and come to me. Tell her not to fear anyone. The Guru will protect her. I will take her and join the army on ahead. Nobody will know what happened.” The maid was happy to hear this. She came back with joy in her mind.
The maid came back and told Kaulan. Bibi Kaulan was in bliss, like a beggar receiving the 9 Niddhis. She gave the maid all her jewellery and said: “listen my friend, you did a great favor for me. You gave me life. I am in gratitude to you till I have life. I won’t forget this. I will give you money for the rest of my life. Help me plan leaving tomorrow night. He said not to fear. I need to get down from the window. Guru ji will take me then.” They made preparations for Bibi Kaulan to leave. She slept during the day to show that she was in pain. She showed her mother that she was in pain. Everyone came to speak words of hope to her and asked her to eat. The whole family didn’t know why she really was in pain.
Guru Hargobind Sahib ji slept the night and woke up in the morning. Guru ji got ready and said to Baba Bhudda ji: “listen Baba ji, there is nothing left in Lahore. Jahangir has died. Shah Jahan is not faithful to the Guru’s home. It is not right to stay here anymore. We should leave for Amritsar. Baba ji, mobilize the army and head for Amritsar. Set up camp 15 km near Amritsar. I will leave the next night and meet with you. I will meet you and go to Amritsar with you. I need to complete your words as well regarding becoming the Qazi’s son-in-law.” The preparations were made. Baba Bhudda ji obeyed and started off with the army. Everyone headed to Amritsar. The servants met Guru ji and headed to Amritsar. Guru ji’s tent remained alone. The people of Lahore knew that Guru ji was still there.
The Taadis of the Badshah came near Guru ji’s Dhera. They knew that Guru ji loved to listen to Vaars. They decided to visit Guru ji and sing for him to receive money. Guru ji met the Taadis and had them sit near him. Guru ji said to him: “sing all night long. Sing the Vaars of brave warriors.” The Taadis were happy to hear this. They were happy to get money. They started singing Vaars of warriors. They sang of wars between kings. Guru ji sat behind a Purdah and told everyone not to light any Divas or torches. The Taadis sang outside the tent. Guru ji would shout words of encouragement as the Taadis sang. They sang their Raags with the Rabab out loud.
It was night time. The Qazi was running around to get money from Guru ji. He went to Shah Jahan and said to him: “Guru ji is not paying me the money for the horse. His Sikh said bad words to me. They are making excuses. I need you to send someone with me to receive the money. Otherwise they’ll keep making excuses.” Shah Jahan said: “don’t worry, I’ll send someone with you tomorrow morning. He will help you get your money. I think they will pay you.” The Qazi came back home. On his way, he saw the empty Dhera with only one tent. He got worried that Guru ji had left. He came close to the Dhera to see. He noticed the Taadis singing and that Guru ji was listening to them and expressing words of joy and encouragement. He was sure that Guru ji was still there. He thought to himself: “I will get my money and show them the strength of the Badshah in the morning.” He was worry-free and came to his home. He was greedy for money. He rested the night.
Guru ji continued listening to the Taadis. When the Taadis gave the ending Taans (high-pitched endings of the chapters), Guru ji would shout words of encouragement. Guru ji’s horse was saddled and ready to go. Guru ji was ready to leave at any time. Guru ji would send money from behind the Purdah to the Taadis. When it was close to midnight, Guru ji got ready to leave. Guru ji came out of his tent. The Taadis didn’t know if Guru ji had left. Guru ji wore expensive clothes and weapons. The Taadis could still hear Guru ji’s voice from the tent but Guru ji wasn’t there. They didn’t know what happened. They kept singing as they did before. They sang till morning. They got a lot of money to sing. They were happy. They kept singing. Guru ji did not light any Divas or torches that night. Guru ji had told the Taadis to keep singing. Guru ji had mounted his horse and headed to the Qazi’s home. Guru ji stopped his horse and wanted to call Bibi Kaulan.
5-22 Coming to Sri Amritsar
Bibi Kaulan ji was waiting for Guru ji. She stared out the window continuously. She had planned to leave that night. The maid helped her plan for this. It was Amritvela. Guru ji reached the Qazi’s home and stopped under the big window. Kaulan ji saw Guru ji arrive. She got ready to leave right away. She knew that Satguru ji was omnipotent and all-powerful. She became fearless. The Guru was the destroyer of demons. She climbed down the window with a rope. The maid held the rope from the top. Bibi Kaulan ji bowed to Guru ji’s feet. When she bowed, her wishes were all fulfilled. She was in bliss. Her heart blossomed. Her throat swelled with emotion. She couldn’t speak. Guru ji saw her love and devotion. He grabbed her by the arm and seated her on the horse. Guru ji rode his horse fast and left Lahore.
As Guru ji came out of Lahore. There were 5 Sikhs waiting for Guru ji. Bhai Jetha ji, Bhai Paira ji, Bhai Pirana ji, Bhai Langaah ji and Bhai Bidhi Chand ji met Guru ji. They rode their horses along with Guru ji and headed towards Amritsar. Six horses were riding to Amritsar. The horses were riding a very pleasant run. They were very fast. The rider couldn’t tell how fast they were going. They looked up and noticed they had travelled far in little time. The sun was about to rise. Guru ji got off his horse. He said to one of the Sikhs: “Jetha ji, how far is Amritsar from here?” Bhai Jetha ji said: “Guru Gareeb Nivaaj, I recognize this place. Guru ji, we are 21 km away from Amritsar. Please rest now.” Guru ji asked further: “what is this place? There is only jungle here. I don’t see any villages here. There are small trees here. It seems to be the thick of the jungle.” The Sikhs went to see the area. They said to Guru ji: “Madho Brar village is nearby. We have come this way many times. We recognize the land.” There was a square where they were with a small pond near it. Guru ji’s seat was set in the square. Guru ji sat down there. Bhai Pirana ji held Guru ji’s horse and tied it to a tree. Right next to Guru ji’s seat was a Pipal tree. Bibi Kaulan ji sat under that tree. As the sun came up, Guru Hargobind Sahib ji’s face could be seen. Bibi Kaulan ji saw his face and said to herself: “I am fortunate to see the Peer of Peers.” Guru ji said to Bhai Jetha ji: “look to see if there is water nearby.” Bhai Jetha ji went to look around. He couldn’t find any water source. He came back and said to Guru ji: “Guru ji, there is no other source of water anywhere. The pond near you is the only source of water. This water isn’t clean. There is mud there.” Guru ji said: “this will have to do. The water that touches the ground is pure. I will bathe here. When I bathe, the water will become pure. This place will be known as “Gurusar.” The Sikhs that bathe here, their problems will go away.” Guru ji then bathed in the pond and sat down in Samadhi. He connected with his real form. The 5 Sikhs also bathed and wore their clothes and weapons. The Sikhs were on guard like lions, fearless and fierce. Bibi Kaulan ji then bathed and stayed at a distance from Guru ji. She bowed to him while doing his Darshan. He was like the sun. Bibi Kaulan ji’s eyes bloomed like the lotus. Her heart was full of bliss. As the sun was fully up, Guru ji opened his eyes. He wanted to go to Amritsar and so he prepared to leave. He said to two of the Sikhs: “go to the village and get a palanquin along with two people to carry it. Have Bibi Kaulan ji seated in their and take her to Amritsar.”
The two Sikhs went to the village and got a palanquin. They brought back a palanquin with two people to carry it. Guru ji got ready. His horse was saddled. Guru ji rode his horse and travelled slowly. Guru ji soon met the Sikh army with Baba Bhudda ji. Everyone met Guru ji and bowed to him with devotion. They soon all reached Amritsar. The people of Amritsar found out that Guru ji was coming back. The Sikhs celebrated and sang Gurbani Shabads that mention the Guru coming. They got together and came to meet Guru ji. They bowed to his lotus feet.
Guru ji came to Akaal Takhat and dismounted his horse. He placed Karah Prashaad at Akaal Takhat and did an Ardaas. Bhai Gurdas ji did the Ardaas and distributed the Prashaad to everyone. The great Sodhi then bowed from the Darshani Deodi. He crossed the bridge and came inside Harmandhir Sahib. He bowed in the Darbar of Guru Ramdas ji. He did 4 Parkarmas of Sri Harmandhir Sahib. He was happy to be there. Mata Ganga ji’s servants came to meet Guru ji. They were happy to see Guru ji and bowed to him. They then noticed a palanquin coming with a woman inside. They asked: “who’s in the Dhola?” The Sikhs that knew said: “Sri Satguru ji has brought this Dhola. A fortunate daughter of the Qazi is in this Dhola. She has become devoted to the feet of Satguru ji.” When the servants heard this, they ran to Mata Ganga ji to tell her. They told her what they heard. Mata ji heard this and got really angry. She said: “what deed has my son done?”
Guru Hargobind Sahib ji had arrived in that time to Mata Ganga ji’s home. He bowed to Mata ji’s feet. Mata ji gave him love by kissing his head. She had him sit next to her and said: “listen son, what did you do? This will lower your praise in the world. You are of a very high family. No one has done such a bad thing as this. The throne of Sri Guru Nanak Dev ji is the highest. You sit on that throne. Why didn’t you see your glory? What will the Sangat and Sikhs say? The Bedis, Trehans, and Bhallas; what will they all say? What will the other Sodhis say? Won’t they talk bad about you? You did an unorthodox thing. Your father was calm. Peers and Meers respected him. You are the greatest in the world. There is no one equal to you right now. You did a bad thing. How could you do this? You didn’t think of anyone else’s glory.” Guru Hargobind Sahib ji heard his mother while lowering his eyes. He said: “it was out of my control. If it was in my control, why would I do this? The Bali Purakh (all-powerful Akaal Purakh) made me do this. I thought long and hard but I couldn’t control it. I was helpless and had to do this. I was in a great dilemma. I had to keep Baba Bhudda ji’s word and it was the reward of Kaulan’s Bhagti.” Guru ji went quiet and came outside the home. The palanquin was taken to Mata ji’s home. Mata ji saw the palanquin and said in anger: “she is not to stay here. It will be insulting to keep her in the home. She may go where she pleases.” Mata Ganga ji refused to let Bibi Kaulan ji in the house.
Guru ji found out about Mata ji’s refusal. Bhai Paira ji was standing close to Guru ji. Guru ji called him over and said: “the south side of the Amritsar Sarovar, find a nice place there and set up a tent. Have the Dhola set up camp there. Prepare for everything there. Call laborers tomorrow morning and have a beautiful house made for her. It should be constructed quickly. Get them everything they need. Send some maids to serve Kaulan ji and to do what she says.” Guru ji then went to his own home and rested. Bhai Paira ji arranged for a house to be built for Mata Kaulan ji.
5-23 The Qazi comes to Amritsar to get his money
Guru ji was inside his home at ate his meal as there were celebrations in Amritsar. There were Deepmalas and fireworks in Amritsar. Everyone was happy that Guru ji had returned. They praised his physical appearance: “he is big and strong. His arms are like elephant trunks. His face is like the moon without the blemishes. He is a strong and powerful warrior.” Some said: “he smiled at me and talked to me!” Some said: “he asked me how I was and blessed me with his divine vision.” Some said: “he has a jubilant personality and smiles all the time.” Some commented on his physical strength. There were Divas on top of the balconies. Every door in the city was shining. The people said: “Jahangir had taken Guru ji with him. Guru ji has returned home after a long time.” The people of the city praised Guru ji in this way with love in their hearts. There were Divas lit in the market. It was a festive place. Everyone slept the night and woke up the next morning.
Everyone bathed and got ready in the morning. They all came to visit Guru Hargobind Sahib ji after getting ready. Guru ji gave his Darshan to everyone and fulfilled their wishes. The Rababs and Mridangs sounded. The Rababis sang Shabads in various Raags along with the Sangat. A lot of Panchamrit came. Ardaas was done while standing up and the Prashaad was distributed. When the sun came up, everyone ate. They rested in the afternoon on their beds. Satguru ji got up from his afternoon nap and called for his horse. He took his soldiers and rode along with them. He took his hawk and went hunting, looking for animals amongst the trees.
Back in Lahore, listen to what happened to the Qazi, the next morning after Guru ji had taken Bibi Kaulan ji. The Qazi got up in the morning, clueless to what had happened over night. The fool got ready and went to do his work. He had to visit an Umarov and so he headed that way. As he passed Guru ji’s Dhera, he noticed there was nothing going on. We wondered if everyone was still asleep. He wanted to see for himself. As he checked around, he came to understand that Guru ji had left. He saw one tent set up and ran inside. There was no one there. He got worried and thought to himself: “Guru ji took all the money and left. He must have found out that the Badshah was going to send someone to receive the money today. He ran away to avoid the payment. The Badshah will use force to get the money. He must have gone home to Amritsar. I should go there. I hope my travel is not fruitless. That area is full of jungles, void of drinking water. He will probably get into a fight with me if I go. The Badshah’s command is not obeyed there. The Badshah’s soldiers won’t go there either, due to the lack of water. I should go regardless. That’s the only way I’ll get my money. If they use force and not pay me, I will complain to the Badshah. He will bring his army then. I will get my money after that for sure.”
The Qazi went to his stables and saddled his horse. He took a servant along with him. As he rode, he asked a passerby: “is Guru ji in this city?” The traveller responded: “Guru ji has gone to his city. There is a Deepmala with celebrations there. Many rifles and guns were fired at once. Sangat has been coming from every direction. The wise ones are praising him.” The Qazi was now convinced that Guru ji went back to his home. He thought to himself: “there’s no use staying here. I’ll have to go there to get my money. His Divaan, Baba Bhudda ji, got into an argument with me. I hope he doesn’t get into a fight with me there. It is good if they pay me the easy way. The relation will be pleasant then. Otherwise there will be a fight.” The Qazi thought in worry. The fool did not know what was going to happen.
The Qazi arrived in Amritsar. He saw the houses. They were very beautiful, he noticed. Guru ji had gone hunting. The Qazi saw the hunting party and noticed a very strong and heavy person on one of the horses. He recognized Guru ji from a distance and got happy. He thought to himself: “Khuddah is helping him. If Guru ji was in his home, it would have been hard to find him. I will ask him right now if he will pay me the money or not.” The Qazi approached Guru ji and gave him a Salaam while bowing. Guru ji stopped and so did the other warriors with him. Guru ji said: “welcome Qazi ji! You showed haste in coming here. You have come for your money. It’s good you came now.” The Qazi was happy to hear this and said: “you left all of a sudden. Your Divaan got into a fight with me and on top of that, you left very quickly without informing me. I couldn’t wait and so I came to see you here. Many days have passed and I didn’t get my money. How can I trust anyone?” Guru ji figured out that the Qazi had no idea about his daughter leaving his home. The warriors figured this out too. The Qazi knew nothing about his daughter. Guru ji spoke to him with respect: “take your money, whatever you think is right. Stay the night and leave in the morning. Take a written Hundi.” Guru ji took the Qazi and came into the city. Guru ji called a servant and spoke quietly in his hear: “go on ahead and give Kaulan the news that her father is here from Lahore and that she should prepare good food for him. Tell her that I am bringing him to her. She should plate the food for him, herself and fan him while he eats.” The servant quickly went on ahead and went to Bibi Kaulan’s home.
The servant came to Bibi Kaulan’s home and told one of the maids: “tell Mata Kaulan ji that: Guru ji wants her to know that: her father is here from Lahore and that she should prepare food for him to eat.” The message was given to Mata Kaulan ji. She prepared the food with great joy. Sweet and salty foods were made. A tasty feast was prepared. She obeyed Guru ji’s command and the fact that her father had come; she prepared everything with joy.
Satguru ji came and started the Divaan. Guru ji sat in the middle with all the warriors. The Qazi was seated close to Guru ji. Guru ji called for the money to be given to the Qazi with respect. Guru ji said to the Qazi: “did you eat anything on the way or not? Did you rest along the way?” The Qazi said: “food was prepared yesterday but I was focused on getting here quickly. I will eat food now. I will stay here for one night.” Sri Guru Hargobind ji spoke: “I had food prepared for you already. The food must be ready by now. You must be hungry. Go and eat first. You will be able to eat amongst your fellow Turks.” Guru ji whispered to a servant: “take the Qazi with you to Kaulan’s home. Have him eat the food.”
The servant took the Qazi and headed to Mata Kaulan ji’s place. The Qazi and his servant both followed the Sikh. The Qazi went inside his daughter’s home and saw a beautiful bed laid out. A maid came and had the Qazi seated on the bed. The Qazi was happy to see that place. He noticed that it was the house of a Turk. He was happy that Guru ji had his food prepared by Turks in their home.
5-24 The Qazi gets angry and goes back to Lahore
The Qazi sat on the bed and his servant sat on the floor. The maid went inside to Bibi Kaulan ji to tell her that her father had arrived. She had prepared many types of foods and plated them on a big plate. The plate was given to a maid to give to her father. The Qazi saw the food and got really happy. The plate was placed in front of the Qazi. The Qazi was really hungry so he started to eat right away. He had eaten a lot of food but wasn’t full when Bibi Kaulan ji wanted to come see him. She grabbed some more food and came outside to see her father. Her jewellery clanked as she walked. The Qazi saw the beautiful clothes and thought to himself: “some woman is coming towards me.” She was wearing expensive clothes and jewellery. The jewellery seemed as though they were singing a song as they clanked. Bibi Kaulan ji had her eyes lowered as she walked. The Qazi looked up. Mata Kaulan ji said: “Bava ji, please accept my Salaam.” When the Qazi looked up, the fool was like he drowned without water. He wondered when she had arrived here. He wanted to find a hole and jump into it. He was still. He didn’t touch his food further. He stopped chewing. He couldn’t eat no more. His eyes began to shed tears. He wiped his eyes with his hands. He forgot about where he was. He forgot about the money he came to receive. He was shocked. He thought to himself: “what should I do now?” He was about to get up when Mata ji said: “Bava ji, why are you upset? Eat the food, take your money and go back home in the morning.” Her words felt like salt on an open wound. He spoke harsh words to her: “damned by Khuddah! What did you do? Why didn’t you die when you were born? You speak without fear and shame now. My honor has been destroyed today.” Mata Kaulan ji said: “listen Pithaji, I am not damned by Khuddah. He is the saviour of all. Your honor is blessed. Fold your hands and bow to Parvadhagar. Khuddah has made this bond. The Peer of Peers has given me his sanctuary. His presence and radiance are known in the world. He is the Guru of both Hindu and Turk. They both call him the True and complete Guru. I have been saved and blessed in his sanctuary. I have been taken out of Hell and put into Heaven. You can do as you wish now. You will receive the result as you do.” The Qazi heard this and burned with anger. He was about to storm out of the house. He said: “I regret having you 100 times. You destroyed the family honor. I would have killed you if I knew you were going to do this. I would still hang you if I could.” He swore at her as he left the house.
Where Guru Hargobind Sahib ji was sitting; where a big Divaan was in progress; near where the Qazi had tied his horse, the Qazi went to get his horse. He was in shame. He didn’t say a word. Guru ji saw the Qazi coming from a distance and began to smile, slightly, from his handsome face. The other Sikhs that knew the whole story, they started to smirk as well, while locking eyes with Guru ji. They said: “looks like the Qazi met his daughter. We wonder if he’s happy or upset. He looks like he’s mad and embarrassed. His dirty face is lowered.” Satguru ji spoke out: “tell me, how did your meeting with your daughter go?” The Qazi stopped and sent his servant to get his horse. At the same time, Guru ji sent a Sikh to call the Qazi over. When the Sikh came over to the Qazi to take him to Guru ji, the Qazi spoke in anger: “I won’t come to see such a person who gives so much pain. What Guru? What is he saying? When a great army comes to capture him, then I’ll come to see him.” The Sikh came back to Guru ji and said: “he’s not coming. Instead, he’s speaking nonsense. He is saying that he will bring a big army to capture you to take his revenge. He is angry. He’s being a fool and not calming down.” Guru ji called Bhai Jetha ji and Bhai Bidhi Chand ji. He said to them: “go and bring the Qazi here. Speak to him politely first. Then grab his arms and bring him here.” The 2 Sikhs went to the Qazi and said: “why are you upset? Go and get your money from him.” The Qazi said: “I won’t meet him or take the money. I have never seen such a corrupt-minded person before.” The Sikhs grabbed the Qazi by the arms. The Qazi squirmed to get free from them but the Sikhs took him forcefully. They spoke to him nicely but took him to Guru Sahib with force. As they came close to Guru ji, Guru ji said: “take your 10,000 Rajitpuns. There is no wait now. It will be counted and given to you. You got into a fight with Baba Bhudda ji. This is the result of that fight.” The Qazi heard this and said: “I won’t take the money. I will complain to the Badshah and have you captured. I will then take my money. Otherwise I will leave it. You have hurt my honor. The people of the Badshah’s court listen to me and respect me. You manipulated my daughter and bribed her to come to you. You will see the result very soon.” Guru ji said: “that is another conflict. You can do as you please. You can take the money now or leave it. If you don’t want it, then say that you took it. I don’t want a debt on my head. Say it three times that you’ve received the money. I am indebted to you, if you say it three times, I will no longer be indebted to you. I am the receiver so say it three times.” The Qazi said: “I will take the money when I have you arrested. Otherwise I will say it that I leave everything. I can’t face you after that.” Guru ji made him say that three times. Guru ji said: “spend the night here. You are tired. You can use your strength tomorrow. Spend the night in peace.” The Qazi said: “let me go! I won’t stay here. I will go to Lahore right now. I’m not tired. I want to go now. I can’t take this. I regret coming here.” Guru ji had him released. The Qazi mounted his horse and rode off like an arrow from a bow. He took his servant along with him. He was in great anger. He rode till nightfall. He didn’t care for fatigue.
The Qazi saw a village and stopped there to rest. He was really worried. He laid down to rest but couldn’t sleep. In the morning, he mounted his horse and set off again. The next day, he reached Lahore. The news of Mata Kaulan ji had spread around Lahore: “the Qazi beat his daughter and she ran away.” Hearing his own news, he covered his face due to embarrassment as travelled. When he came home, he saw his wife crying. He didn’t say anything. He sat down, upset. He regretted what he did. He started to blame himself: “if I didn’t beat my daughter, maybe she wouldn’t have left. She was of age to be married. I should have married her off.” In this way the Qazi thought of things and regretted his actions. He didn’t go to the Badshah that day and just stayed home. His wife got mad at him and scolded him continuously, putting all the blame on him. The Qazi said to his wife: “she went with the Guru,” and went quiet. He spent the night in his home.
5-25 The Qazi complains to the Emperor
The next day, Qazi Rustom Khan woke up and washed his hands and face. He thought about going to the Emperor to complain. He got dressed and went to the Emperor’s court. He did his Salaam to the Emperor 7 times. He said to him: “Guru Hargobind ji, the Peer of the Hindus, what he did to me, I can’t even say it. When you gave me the ill horse, the Guru bought it from me for 10,000 Rajitpuns. He took the horse and told me he will pay me after. He made excuses and didn’t pay me. He took the horse and took my daughter by manipulating her. He left Lahore after that.” The Emperor was already upset and so, he didn’t understand or care about what the Qazi was saying. The Qazi had arrived when the Emperor had just finished scolding someone. The Qazi took his Pugri off and threw it on the ground and said: “I am in trouble.” The Shah said: “why are you yelling? I can’t understand you. You are speaking like an idiot. Don’t stand here with your head uncovered. You are wise. Don’t act like a fool.” The Qazi noticed the Badshah in anger and went quiet. Vizier Khan said to the Emperor: “Sire, listen, what can we say about Kaliyuga? These are bad times. His daughter was in pain. The Qazi would not marry her off. Instead, he would beat her. She was upset and tired of the beatings so she ran away to Amritsar. She settled there because she was afraid of getting beaten by the Qazi. The Guru is gracious. His home is open to all. Many go to live in Amritsar. Anyone who needs food or clothes get what they need from the Guru’s home. This Qazi comes to complain against the one who saved your father. Mian Mir ji and other Peers respect the Guru. You shouldn’t spoil it with Guru ji by listening to the Qazi. If you listen to the Qazi, everyone will protest.” Shah Jahan heard this and said: “Qazi ji, don’t speak. It is your fault. Don’t you feel shame? You kept an unmarried girl in your home and didn’t make an effort to marry her off. You shouldn’t fight with Peers or Fakirs. You should always respect them. If they say a curse from their mouths, great mountains can be reduced to dust in no time. You came into the court and showed your dishonor to all. Your daughter left your home, you lost your honor. What will people say if you bring her back now? Stay quiet and don’t talk about this.” The Qazi lowered his face after listening to the Emperor. He was embarrassed. He thought to himself: “the Emperor won’t let me speak.” He took his Pugh and put in on his head again. He continued thinking: “I am getting pain from every direction. The Guru kept my 10,000, who is proud of himself. I didn’t get anything. People see me as a poor person. What will people think of me now? The Guru didn’t give me the money and on top of that, he took my daughter. I am like a walking dead person. There’s nothing I can do. I can’t even take revenge. I thought I had the support of Shah Jahan but that is gone too. What did Khuddah do to me? I am in pain. The whole family is crying out of love. I won’t be able to see my daughter now. Everyone is depressed. I have become the Guru’s enemy.” He didn’t mention this again to anyone.
Shah Jahan said to Vizier Khan: “you gave me the right advice. I wasn’t thinking right but you gave me the right suggestion. If I listened to the Qazi, there may have been a big conflict with the Guru. We would have become enemies. This could have been dangerous to my body. You saved me. The Qazi did bad things and wanted me to become the Guru’s enemy. It would have been a useless conflict. I am afraid of his words. He can curse anything and destroy it.” Bhai Vizier Khan ji heard this and said: “your safety is what everyone likes. Sire, your father was manipulated by Chandoo to do the wrong things. He made your father send the Guru to the Gwalior fort. After 40 days, the Badshah would see lions. He would be scared all night long. When he would remember Guru Hargobind ji, the Guru would come right away to save him. When he wanted to call him back, there were other Rajas in the jail. The Guru wanted to release the Rajas as well. That was the demand of the Guru. The Emperor listened to the Guru and released the 52 Rajas. He respected Guru ji and did what he said. If you were to become the benevolent Guru’s enemy, that would have been bad. Do what is good for you. That is good for the country. When a foolish person does something bad, their honor is disgraced. The Qazi got what he deserved. You should remain calm and don’t do anything.” After the discussion Bhai Vizier Khan sent a letter to Guru ji about the whole event.
Bhai Vizier Khan ji’s messenger came to Lahore. The Sikhs were waiting for some conflict as the Qazi left in anger: “looks like the Emperor will fight us. There will be damages. People will die if war happens. Guru ji won’t back down from a fight because he is a brave warrior.” The Masands, void of faith, got worried. They went to Mata Ganga ji and said: “nobody likes what is going on. The Guru ji didn’t pay the Qazi and instead made fun of him. He has gone to the Emperor to complain now. He is going to come back with an army. When the army comes, Guru ji will fight them. He has an army ready. We don’t have a country or a big army. How can we compare to the Emperor? We will have to run away from this place. This is the place of our fathers and grandfathers. We won’t be able to live here anymore.” Mata Ganga ji heard this and said: “I am already regretting this. I can’t do anything. The first five Gurus were calm and made Sikhi appear. My son made a Takhat and wore weapons. He practises weaponry. I tell him to consider everything. I said: “this is not suitable for you.” He says to me: “this is not in my control.” He is the wisest of all but war can ruin things. He can only solve this. Neither you nor me can do anything about this. If you can convince him, go and speak to him so the battle can be avoided. Tell him that he shouldn’t fight. This is what I want too.”
The Masands went to Guru ji. They folded their hands and bowed to him. As they were about to say something, the messenger of Bhai Vizier Khan ji came. Guru ji turned to the messenger and didn’t listen to the Masands. Guru ji had the letter read out. The whole story was revealed which made everyone happy. Mata Ganga ji heard the news and thanked Guru Nanak Dev ji for this. Everyone was worry-free again. They realised that nothing was in their hands and that they were saved by the Avinashi. There was happiness everywhere. An Ardaas was done at Harmandhir Sahib. Panchamrit was distributed as the conflict was over. Everyone bowed to Satguru ji and said: “you are omnipotent. Everything is in your hands.”
